- 0:00Vox Liturgica: The propers of the day according to the Roman Missal before 1955. The feast of Saint Hilarion of Gaza, October 21 in the year of our Lord 2026. Of today's saint Dom Gaspar Lefevre writes, after the era of martyrs to whom the church had exclusively reserved the honors of public worship she began to raise to the altars the servants of God who had distinguished themselves by their heroic virtues although they had not won the glory of shedding their blood for Jesus Christ. St. Hilarion in the East and Saint Martin in the West are at the head of the list of saints known as confessors.
- 1:01A native of Palestine, Saint Hilarion studied at Alexandria and desiring to embrace a more perfect life he left all to follow Jesus. He heard of St. Anthony's holiness and went to see him in Egypt. The Saint kept him for two months in order to train him to a life of penance and contemplation. He then delivered to this boy of 15 years of age a hair shirt and a garment made of skin saying persevere to the end my son and thy labor shall be rewarded by the delights of heaven.
- 1:50Hilarion returned to Palestine and founded monastic life there. After having built several monasteries for which he made laws as Moses had done of old for God's people. He retired to the island of Cyprus so as to escape the crowd of admirers attracted by his brilliant virtues. He died a holy death at the age of 80 about the year of our Lord 372. Saint Jerome wrote his life.
- 2:31Commemorated today are saints Ursula and her companions. At Cologne says the Roman martyrology, the birth in heaven of Saint Ursula and her holy companions who were massacred by the Huns out of hatred for the Christian religion and their virginal purity. Several are buried in this city. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.
- 3:11The introit. The mouth of the just shall meditate wisdom, and his tongue shall speak judgment. The law of God is in his heart. Be not immulus of evildoers nor envy them that work iniquity. Glory be to the father and to the son and to the holy ghost as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages.
- 3:47Amen. The mouth of the just shall meditate wisdom and his tongue shall speak judgment. The law of God is in his heart. The Collect, let us pray. May the intercession of blessed Hilarion the Abbot commend us unto thee, we beseech thee, O Lord, so that what we cannot acquire by any merits of our own we may obtain by his patronage through Christ our Lord.
- 4:27Amen. A commemoration of Saints Ursula and companions. Grant us, we beseech thee, O Lord, to reverence with unceasing devotion the victories of thy holy virgins and martyrs Ursula and her companions, that whom with worthy minds we cannot celebrate, we may at least approach with lowly homage through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. A lesson from the wisdom of Sirach.
- 5:17Well loved by God, well loved among men, a benediction rests upon his memory. The Lord gave him such honor as he gives to his holy ones, gave him renown by striking terror into his enemies, and then at his word abated the prodigies that had befallen them. He made him great in the eyes of kings, entrusted commandments to him in full view of the chosen people, made a revelation to him of the divine glory. The Lord set him apart, chosen out from the rest of mankind, so loyal he was and so gentle answered his prayer by taking him up in a cloud and there face to face imparting commandments to him. The law that gives life and wisdom.
- 6:23The gradual. Lord, with abundant blessings, thou hast met him on his way, hast set a jeweled crown upon his head. He prayed for life, and thou hast granted him life unfailing till the end of time. Alleluia. Alleluia.
- 6:46The just man shall flourish like the palm tree. He shall grow to greatness like the cedars of Lebanon. Alleluia. A continuation of the holy gospel according to Matthew. At that time, Peter said to Jesus, and what of us who have forsaken all and followed thee?
- 7:12What is left for us? Jesus said to them, I promise you, in the new birth, when the Son of Man sits on the throne of his glory, you also shall sit there on 12 thrones, You who have followed me and shall be judges over the 12 tribes of Israel. And every man that has forsaken home or brothers or sisters or father or mother, or wife, or children, or lands for my name's sake shall receive his reward a hundredfold and obtain everlasting life. The offertory. Never a wish in his heart, O Lord, hast thou disappointed.
- 8:08Never a prayer on his lips denied. Thou hast set a jeweled crown on his head. The secret. May the holy Abbot Hilarion, we beseech thee, O Lord, obtain by his prayers that the sacrifice laid on thy holy altar may profit us unto salvation through Christ our Lord. Amen.
- 8:39A commemoration of Saints Ursula and companions. Regard, we beseech thee, O Lord, the gifts offered upon thine altars on this festival of thy holy virgins and martyrs, Ursula and her companions, that as by these blessed mysteries thou hast conferred glory upon them, so thou wouldst vouchsafeth us thy pardon, through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. The common preface. Just it is indeed and fitting, right in for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, everlasting God, through whom the angels praise thy majesty, the dominions worship it, the power stand in awe, the heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify.
- 9:58We entreat thee that thou command it be permitted us to join with them in confessing thee while we say with lowly praise. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, the heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
- 10:34The communion. He was a faithful and wise servant whom the Lord setteth over his family to give them their measure of wheat in due season. The post communion. Let us pray. May the pleading of blessed Hilarion, the Abbot, for us, as well as the reception of thy sacrament, protect us, O Lord, that we may both share in the glory of his works, and receive the help of his intercession through Christ our Lord.
- 11:16Amen. A commemoration of Saints Ursula and companions. Grant us, we beseech thee, O Lord, by the intercession of thy holy virgins and martyrs, Ursula and her companions, that what we take with the mouth we may receive with pure minds through our Lord Jesus Christ thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. In the name of the father and of the son and of the holy ghost.
- 12:04Amen. Let us bless the Lord. Saint Hilarion, pray for us. Saints Ursula and companions, pray for us.
