Transcript
- 0:03In this episode I'm talking about autism and literal
- 0:05thinking and some of the funny things that happen to me.
- 0:09I'm taking like literally or things that have been taken
- 0:12literally super interesting and if you enjoy this and want to
- 0:16see more like this, let me know on Twitter at the ask me world.
- 0:20Okay, guys, enjoy. Okay.
- 0:21So taking a little what am I talking about here?
- 0:24Okay. Basically it's like this
- 0:26autistic people have a neural developmental condition that
- 0:31allows the brain to work a little bit differently.
- 0:33Leave that from that of a neurotypical person and it comes
- 0:35with some perks like being awesome with a big up to the
- 0:37awesome Super Hero Squad. Oh, by the way, this merch link
- 0:40is in description below if you want to buy one of these bad
- 0:43boys. Also the link is underneath this
- 0:45video. You can just click on the link
- 0:46and get yourself an awesome autism t-shirt from the astral
- 0:50World merch stock. Not only being awesome.
- 0:52It also has some downfalls and something that's can sometimes
- 0:55be quite comical or fun and that is taking things literally for
- 0:59instance before in a video. I've spoken about how when I was
- 1:02in doing a A course that with somebody who I knew she said.
- 1:05Oh, can she put the shoes in banana on a cup of coffee?
- 1:07She put a banana peel in the mortgages or who put that in the
- 1:09kitchen and put it in the bin. So I just put the whole thing in
- 1:11the bin, you know cup and everything, but she was actually
- 1:14seeing you know, just the banana peel not the whole cup because
- 1:16you know, that's a stupid thing to do.
- 1:17You want to put a couple of pin down come on.
- 1:19So because of that I have a list of things here that I've gone
- 1:23through that I've taken quite literally literally over the
- 1:28over the past. And so what I'm going to do is
- 1:30I'm going to perform them for you.
- 1:31So you guys can see what Like somebody who is on the Spectrum
- 1:36and how they receive that type of information.
- 1:40Okay, so let's get on with it. So basically this how it's going
- 1:42to work. Hey, I'm just going to go and
- 1:44squeeze some orange juice. Alright juice get ready to be
- 1:46squeezed. Like it's raining cats and dogs
- 1:50outside actual cats and dogs falling from the sky.
- 1:54What? Oh, man.
- 1:56This is so good. You're gonna die when you taste
- 1:58this. Oh, man, I don't want to die.
- 2:00I don't want I don't want it. I don't want to die.
- 2:03All right. Well, I guess it's time to hit
- 2:04the road bad Road. Bad Road showed him why I got a
- 2:13chip on his shoulder slightly. So I do good luck out there
- 2:19break a leg legs broken. Wait, why would you want me to
- 2:23do that for you? Totally got the wrong end of the
- 2:26stick doesn't he Chopsticks? Right?
- 2:28Okay, which end this end of that end and all the way through its
- 2:32way out all this end. I hold it.
- 2:35Okay. I've always end the good end of
- 2:37the bad end of the rail. To the stick.
- 2:38Hey, so what can I pick your brain, please?
- 2:41No, you cannot I want my brain to be intact.
- 2:43I don't want you picking up my brain that's just weird and
- 2:46gross and also you don't have medical degree.
- 2:48Whoa, his eyes are bigger than his belly.
- 2:50Whoa, that guy's eyes must be like this big that's weird.
- 2:53Right big eyes and Tiny stomach weird.
- 2:56So guys taking things literally can't be humorous in some
- 2:59situations when I think about it on my own.
- 3:01Yeah, that's quite funny. But actually I've gotten trouble
- 3:03with this a few times, especially when you know, I'm
- 3:07out in public and I'm out. What kind of like doing shopping
- 3:09or things like that or around other people who are trying to
- 3:11be funny and maybe like a hostile situation then it became
- 3:14difficult. So I always have somebody with
- 3:16me when I go anywhere. Like if I'm visiting a different
- 3:18country, you aren't going anywhere that isn't like my
- 3:20hometown where I was privileged to know everybody so that I can
- 3:23have an interpreter with me to be the intermediate step between
- 3:27me and the real world are trying to communicate something that I
- 3:29don't understand. So a hot tip for anybody dealing
- 3:32with this kind of thing a little thinking is to have a like a
- 3:36travel buddy or a son. It goes out with you when you
- 3:39are going somewhere. It could be a mum your dad or
- 3:41your partner or your guardian anybody your best friend anyone
- 3:46as long as they understand you and they can communicate to the
- 3:48other people but you are potentially be taking something
- 3:51literally and that you're not trying to be like that.
- 3:53I feel like in all seriousness. Some people could take offense
- 3:57to little thinking type of commentary in the you know, if
- 4:00you're taking things literally some people may get super
- 4:03offended by it. They may think that you're being
- 4:05you know aggressive or your being, you know truck.
- 4:08Intimidating to them so you always want to just check that
- 4:10but let's all thinking is a real thing and I think it stems from
- 4:13the fact that you know, autistic people are trying to always see
- 4:17the truth in things. Like I find it difficult to
- 4:19understand sarcasm and jokes where somebody says something
- 4:22and I don't really always get the joke, you know, some jokes
- 4:25are super difficult and they're like taking things literally.
- 4:27So in terms of those things those were figures of speech and
- 4:31like a just how people say things now in terms of jokes
- 4:34people say jokes suck caustically and sarcasm is like
- 4:37acting That something is one way when it isn't over but trying to
- 4:40joke that it's the other way which is super confusing because
- 4:44when when you're trying to decipher the world and see
- 4:47through legitimate factual information and then just bogus
- 4:50kind of rhetoric then how do you judge your sarcasm is?
- 4:54So my friends. I just they just love it though.
- 4:56My friends joke of us have all the time and they tell me like
- 4:59that this one time we were recording recording studio and
- 5:01my band members told me that the Tom drum on a on a you know,
- 5:06sometimes I'm drunk it was called Tom you.
- 5:07Rules and Tom was shot for Tom you and I believe that the ages
- 5:10and that they're so like they were they were just so
- 5:12convincing. They just do all the time
- 5:14because I know that I'm going to take it quite literally and
- 5:17identity are quite a few times where I remember once we were
- 5:19driving to a festival to play a show and they said to me that
- 5:24the guy who the guy who we were going to see the promoter.
- 5:26His name was actually Fozzie and we knew a music from Earth from
- 5:29where we live called Rosie now Rosie from where we lived his
- 5:33wife is called an Herod. So when we were driving to the
- 5:36venue this Festival the guys in my band were like, hey Dom, you
- 5:40know, we're going to go see fall Z and I was again he goes his
- 5:43girlfriend is called a jang Herod and I was like, no way
- 5:46that's just crazy and like I was like Jang how do you even know
- 5:49this information and they spend me long for ages and was until
- 5:51like the drive back in the van that they like dude.
- 5:53We just stringing you along because we want to make it fun
- 5:56this kind of stuff like Some me all the time and my friends are
- 6:01just like, you know douchebags are doing the souls and they
- 6:03always play tricks on me, but they know how far to take it.
- 6:05They would never do anything to put my life in danger or you
- 6:08know, my profession in danger or anything like that.
- 6:10They only do it to just like have some fun really not doing
- 6:13it sinisterly. So yeah big shout out to my
- 6:16friends for being total d-bag, but guys like I was saying make
- 6:20sure you have someone who you can trust you can go out with
- 6:22you and make sure you can decipher your way through the
- 6:24world because it is a scary place and taking things
- 6:25literally is definitely one of The downfalls although comical
- 6:31it's also a downfall. You know, I'm I'm all of those
- 6:34things and something that happens is when people ask me
- 6:37questions, I answer directly the question that you've asked for
- 6:41instance, like people say to me like, oh Dan what's the date
- 6:44today? And I'm like today is the 4th of
- 6:46February 2019 and then they're like damn I didn't need the
- 6:50actual year of the month that you want to know the date as in
- 6:53like the number kit is not obvious.
- 6:54So those things really just like blow my mind.
- 6:57I'm like trying to to be as on it and as little as possible and
- 7:01being like, you know as honest and then ye people just don't
- 7:04want the full, you know, nine yards of the conversation which
- 7:07I find really really weird. Have you got any experiences
- 7:10with stuff like this? Have you experienced little
- 7:13thinking how do you cope with little thinking it's quite funny
- 7:17exposed brick can get into like sticky situations.
- 7:19If you are trying to overcome something and really understand
- 7:22that people are just joking or they're not being serious.
- 7:24So it can have a kind of adverse effect not being just like
- 7:27humorous out sometimes
