- 0:00Speaker 1: With Stu Gotts and Hawkman.
- 0:02Speaker 2: The last episode we did of Chuck Norris has received
- 0:06Speaker 2: some universal praise. I've heard from a lot of people
- 0:09Speaker 2: on Twitter and Instagram really enjoyed looking back. But I
- 0:15Speaker 2: did say in the last episode that Dan's question or
- 0:19Speaker 2: Dan's Chuck Norris fact, Chuck Norris reads Braille, Yes, as
- 0:26Speaker 2: bad as what you did with Chuck Morris and the
- 0:28Speaker 2: Jeep and the movie theater.
- 0:30Speaker 1: What. I don't know whatever you said.
- 0:32Speaker 3: All right, I don't know what I said, and it
- 0:33Speaker 3: wasn't my fault. It was Dan's for throwing it to me.
- 0:35Speaker 2: So there were plenty of people who took issue with
- 0:37Speaker 2: me saying that Dan's was just as bad as yours,
- 0:39Speaker 2: because they said yours was a thousand times worse.
- 0:44Speaker 3: Then Chuck Norris can rebrail. So well, thank you everyone.
- 0:47Speaker 3: I appreciate that. I agree with that. I do I
- 0:50Speaker 3: agree with.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Now, we do have an episode coming up about Steven Segaal.
- 0:55Speaker 2: I told you that we've got two badasses in a row,
- 0:58Speaker 2: but I'm going to keep him out of order a
- 1:00Speaker 2: little bit.
- 1:00Speaker 1: We'll do Segal next week because do.
- 1:03Speaker 2: You remember I was reading man some of the Instagram
- 1:07Speaker 2: messages that I've gotten and or was it just a
- 1:14Speaker 2: conversation we were having about Roberto Duran. I think I
- 1:17Speaker 2: may have been asking you if you remember that Roberto Duran.
- 1:20Speaker 2: I I think I may have read it too, But
- 1:22Speaker 2: I want to play that for everyone.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Do you recall it any.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Better than you did a couple episodes ago when I said,
- 1:29Speaker 2: do you remember the Roberto durand disaster?
- 1:32Speaker 1: H No, hands of Stone, by the way, hands of Stone,
- 1:35Speaker 1: miles a Piedra. Yes, I remember.
- 1:38Speaker 3: Listen, I remember someone not communicating to Dan that Roberto
- 1:43Speaker 3: Duran was going to do this in Spanish.
- 1:46Speaker 2: I don't think anyone did communicate with them. Then I
- 1:49Speaker 2: remember someone doesn't speak English.
- 1:51Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:51Speaker 1: No.
- 1:52Speaker 3: What I meant to say is I don't remember anyone
- 1:54Speaker 3: communicating that to us, and it made it very uncomfortable
- 1:57Speaker 3: for both of the right.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, I'll get to that in a second. So
- 2:00Speaker 2: I always tell you if you want to hear something
- 2:02Speaker 2: on with Stu Gotts and Hawkman, you can always DM
- 2:05Speaker 2: me on Instagram Radio Mark Hawkman on Instagram. I get
- 2:08Speaker 2: a ton of dms. Some people just want to say, hey,
- 2:11Speaker 2: I'm enjoying the podcast. Just wanted to tell you and
- 2:13Speaker 2: I'm not asking for anything, and I say, oh, that's
- 2:15Speaker 2: great love that. Here's an interesting DM I got Hak.
- 2:20Speaker 2: I've rightly complimented you plenty, but I want to add
- 2:23Speaker 2: how much I enjoyed the stuff about the logistics around
- 2:26Speaker 2: the show and Radio Wars. It's been an unexpected pleasure
- 2:30Speaker 2: hearing Stu Gotts reveal himself to be a smart, savvy
- 2:35Speaker 2: businessman in contrast to his later role on the show.
- 2:40Speaker 2: It also underscores that for someone often mocked for lack
- 2:45Speaker 2: of self awareness, he was incredibly self aware to realize
- 2:49Speaker 2: that the future of the show was best served with
- 2:52Speaker 2: him as a supporting actor with Dan as the lead.
- 2:55Speaker 2: Not many people, having set up the station and presumably
- 2:59Speaker 2: had thought of being the lead radio personality, would have
- 3:03Speaker 2: supplanted their ego in that way.
- 3:06Speaker 1: There's some truth to that that.
- 3:07Speaker 2: People don't know, because Stu Gotts obviously is very good
- 3:11Speaker 2: at being a radio host and gotten kind of got
- 3:14Speaker 2: thrust into a role. I mean, if you do know
- 3:17Speaker 2: the backstory, and we've talked about a lot on this podcast,
- 3:20Speaker 2: if you know the backstory of him creating seven ninety
- 3:23Speaker 2: the ticket, there's business savvy there.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Stu Gotts is not a walking Boob.
- 3:28Speaker 3: I appreciate that, huk I am now later in life
- 3:30Speaker 3: or just stopped caring VI.
- 3:32Speaker 1: But that's my job, right.
- 3:34Speaker 3: I don't think anyone gets into radio to be the
- 3:36Speaker 3: wacky sidekick.
- 3:37Speaker 4: Right.
- 3:38Speaker 1: I got into radio. I wanted to be a host.
- 3:40Speaker 1: I wanted to be a sports talk host.
- 3:43Speaker 3: And I remember setting up the station and Dan was
- 3:45Speaker 3: doing afternoons and I was doing middays.
- 3:47Speaker 1: And then Dan called me a.
- 3:48Speaker 3: Week before we launched the station and said I don't
- 3:50Speaker 3: want to do the show by myself. And I said, well, okay,
- 3:52Speaker 3: who you want to do it with? And he said,
- 3:53Speaker 3: I want to do it with you, because boob get
- 3:55Speaker 3: suggested that he do it with me. But I appreciate
- 3:58Speaker 3: them saying that because it took me all of about
- 4:00Speaker 3: six months to realize we were not doing this thing correctly.
- 4:03Speaker 3: Where if it's the Dan Levittard Show, it needs to
- 4:05Speaker 3: be Dan Lebttard and I need to spackle. And it
- 4:08Speaker 3: served me, well, It's the greatest decision professionally that I
- 4:11Speaker 3: ever made, even while I was hesitant in doing so.
- 4:14Speaker 2: And the guy finishes his direct message, he says, sidebar,
- 4:17Speaker 2: such a shame Dan couldn't do the same when it
- 4:19Speaker 2: was screamingly obvious the show was better for your increased
- 4:22Speaker 2: role talking about me, And then he says, anyway, the
- 4:26Speaker 2: podcast has given me increased respect for Stu Goatts.
- 4:29Speaker 1: I love it. Thank you Luke from New Zealand. Well,
- 4:33Speaker 1: thank you, Luke. I could use the respect I'm lacking
- 4:39Speaker 1: in that's apartment.
- 4:39Speaker 2: Yes, somebody DMS me and I did DM him back
- 4:43Speaker 2: with some with a link. Actually, he says, my request
- 4:46Speaker 2: for the podcast is Frank Caliendo. It's one of my
- 4:49Speaker 2: core memories of the show. I'd always drive with my
- 4:52Speaker 2: wife in the car listening to the show. She didn't
- 4:55Speaker 2: quite get the show, but his appearance changed all that.
- 4:59Speaker 2: I believe it was Caliendo's first appearance. He was doing
- 5:02Speaker 2: his al Pacino impression and calling Dan by his first name,
- 5:05Speaker 2: and the exchange literally had me laughing so hard I
- 5:09Speaker 2: was crying and my wife was in stitches. Later that year,
- 5:13Speaker 2: my wife surprised me with tickets to a front table
- 5:16Speaker 2: for a Frank Caliendo show at the Old Hard Rock
- 5:19Speaker 2: Comedy Store. Caliendo was interacting with the front row I
- 5:24Speaker 2: mentioned Dan. He proceeded to do five minutes of show
- 5:27Speaker 2: content live on stage. Frank is on my personal mount
- 5:32Speaker 2: rushmore of guests. On a side note to this day,
- 5:35Speaker 2: I use ed Cody as my alias when dealing with
- 5:38Speaker 2: telemarket A lot unpacked there. But what I dm this
- 5:43Speaker 2: guy back was when Stu Gotts and I started doing
- 5:46Speaker 2: this podcast before we actually launched it, as with stugottson Hawkman,
- 5:51Speaker 2: we did a couple episodes under the Stugotson Company banner
- 5:55Speaker 2: and we brought Frank Frank Calliendo on with us. So
- 5:58Speaker 2: we've done a retro effective with Frank himself and it's
- 6:03Speaker 2: on I believe the Stu.
- 6:05Speaker 1: Gottson company listing.
- 6:07Speaker 2: I don't think it's under with Stugotts and Hawkman wherever
- 6:11Speaker 2: you get your podcasts or on YouTube, but it's video
- 6:14Speaker 2: of me, Stugotts and Frank Calliendo, and we talk a
- 6:17Speaker 2: lot about the monkeys throwing barrels at you, Dan and
- 6:19Speaker 2: all that stuff. It's out there somewhere on one of
- 6:22Speaker 2: the Stugotts channels.
- 6:23Speaker 1: Yeah, and I'm pleased to say that.
- 6:25Speaker 3: I think for both of us, Frank has again become
- 6:28Speaker 3: part of your show. He's become a big part of
- 6:30Speaker 3: our show individually, both our shows.
- 6:33Speaker 1: He was just on this week and when the wee.
- 6:35Speaker 3: Ken observations in all his great voices. But Frank was
- 6:39Speaker 3: a massive part of our show at the very beginning,
- 6:42Speaker 3: and people fell in love with Frank Calliendo, and we
- 6:45Speaker 3: fell in love with Frank Calliendo, and dare I say
- 6:47Speaker 3: Frank Kellendo fell in love with us?
- 6:49Speaker 1: It was crazy?
- 6:50Speaker 5: Yes, Hawk for that listener, I'm looking at it right now.
- 6:53Speaker 5: It's on Stu gottson Company October twenty ninth two Thy
- 6:57Speaker 5: twenty five set one. The monkey are still throwing barrels
- 7:01Speaker 5: at you.
- 7:02Speaker 3: I maintain you can't have enough Caliendo. We should do
- 7:04Speaker 3: it right here on this show, though, Hawk. We should
- 7:06Speaker 3: bring Frank back. I know he wants to do it.
- 7:08Speaker 1: He loves both of us and we should just keep
- 7:10Speaker 1: going with him. We should have him on every week.
- 7:11Speaker 1: Let's do that.
- 7:12Speaker 2: Well, if you want to hear the original one that
- 7:14Speaker 2: we did, go look at the Stugotts and Company thread,
- 7:18Speaker 2: go back to.
- 7:20Speaker 1: October and you can see it there.
- 7:24Speaker 3: I'm expecting a ton of downloads for that October episode.
- 7:27Speaker 1: I mean, let's go.
- 7:28Speaker 2: Somebody says on DM High Hawk for with Stugotts and Hawkman,
- 7:33Speaker 2: can we reminisce about I Gotta tell You. My brother
- 7:37Speaker 2: and I listened to that four hour YouTube video compilation
- 7:40Speaker 2: of I Gotta tell You driving home from Winter Break
- 7:43Speaker 2: about ten years ago. I was about twelve years old
- 7:48Speaker 2: living in New England when the show started, so unfortunately
- 7:51Speaker 2: I missed a lot of the heyday. That's an amazing thing.
- 7:54Speaker 2: And I hear this all the time kids who listened
- 7:58Speaker 2: to the show on their way home from school with
- 8:01Speaker 2: their dad, and now they're adults.
- 8:03Speaker 1: I know, they're married and they're.
- 8:06Speaker 2: Living some of their childhood or they're being exposed to
- 8:10Speaker 2: stuff from the show that they just didn't get because
- 8:13Speaker 2: they were younger.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Yes, but Otheresn't that feel good to you?
- 8:16Speaker 4: Hawk? Yeah?
- 8:17Speaker 3: You set out to get into radio to have an impact,
- 8:20Speaker 3: not just get into radio, but to somehow have an
- 8:22Speaker 3: impact where very few people have impact in this business.
- 8:26Speaker 1: And we impacted people's lives.
- 8:28Speaker 3: And I think that's it gives what we do, this
- 8:31Speaker 3: ridiculous thing we do some meaning, you know, just hear
- 8:34Speaker 3: in some sort of communications like that.
- 8:36Speaker 2: I had a so yesterday on my radio show on WQAM,
- 8:42Speaker 2: was was the first day of my thirteenth year doing
- 8:47Speaker 2: afternoon drive radio.
- 8:49Speaker 1: Means a lot to me. It does to Stugot's as well.
- 8:52Speaker 2: It's not just my livelihoods, but I've been a fan
- 8:55Speaker 2: of the medium since I was a kid. I used
- 8:58Speaker 2: to listen to B ninety six in Chicago, and I
- 9:00Speaker 2: used to listen to the Loop in Chicago, and Steve
- 9:03Speaker 2: Dahl was a talk show host that I listened to.
- 9:05Speaker 2: In Kevin Matthews, Larry Lujack did mornings like I was
- 9:08Speaker 2: a radio guy. And it hit me yesterday, So I'm
- 9:11Speaker 2: doing the Uh, I'm doing the afternoon drive show with Crowder.
- 9:15Speaker 1: And Solana and Jimmy. And it's the start of my
- 9:19Speaker 1: thirteenth year.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Yes, I start on April Fool's Day, that is appropriate,
- 9:24Speaker 2: but it's the start of my thirteenth year. And I
- 9:27Speaker 2: was I had this moment where I was like, did
- 9:30Speaker 2: Hank do thirteen years in afternoon drive on QAM.
- 9:34Speaker 3: I'm not certain do thirteen consecutive years in afternoon drive.
- 9:39Speaker 3: If anyone did thirteen consecutive years other than you at
- 9:43Speaker 3: WQAM in afternoon Drive, it was Hank.
- 9:45Speaker 1: That's it.
- 9:46Speaker 3: I can't imagine someone else. Mandage was not doing that
- 9:49Speaker 3: for thirteen years. I think Hank was doing it. For
- 9:52Speaker 3: maybe sixteen seventeen years until we eventually.
- 9:56Speaker 2: But there were points where he got moved to mornings,
- 9:58Speaker 2: right that happened during our show.
- 10:00Speaker 3: Yes he did move to mornings. What a terrible spot
- 10:03Speaker 3: for Hank. Putting Hank on in the mornings. I mean
- 10:06Speaker 3: that is just not what you want to hear on
- 10:07Speaker 3: the winter work. And I say that respectfully for Hank.
- 10:09Speaker 3: The perfect spot for Hank in his heyday, in his
- 10:12Speaker 3: prime was afternoon drive. He was great, He was unbelievable.
- 10:16Speaker 3: But I haven't rolodex. I think you might.
- 10:19Speaker 1: His Rolodex was ridiculous.
- 10:20Speaker 3: I still I still call on some of those numbers today.
- 10:24Speaker 1: It's about to hear.
- 10:25Speaker 2: Rolodex was like, you know, before you had contact in
- 10:28Speaker 2: your phone, man, Hank Roldenberg's Rolodex was insane.
- 10:33Speaker 3: I mean, if you wanted Earnie a Corsi on, I mean,
- 10:36Speaker 3: Hank had the number for you.
- 10:38Speaker 2: If you needed beIN O cook at an instant notice, Yes,
- 10:41Speaker 2: there he was.
- 10:42Speaker 3: But Hack, doesn't that feel good because I used to
- 10:44Speaker 3: call I think Taylor is looking up how long Hank
- 10:46Speaker 3: was at wq AM doing afternoon drives.
- 10:48Speaker 1: But I used to tell Mike and Chris and it.
- 10:51Speaker 3: Made them feel so good, Mike Francessa and Christopher mad
- 10:55Speaker 3: Dog Russo that the reason I got into this industry
- 10:57Speaker 3: was because of them. I was listening to them on
- 11:00Speaker 3: car drives home with my father, whether he's picking me
- 11:02Speaker 3: up from school or just running around town, and that's
- 11:05Speaker 3: why they were the reasons I decided to get into
- 11:07Speaker 3: this industry, and it made them feel good. So I
- 11:11Speaker 3: have to think when you hear stories like that, you
- 11:13Speaker 3: feel great about it, right, Yeah.
- 11:14Speaker 2: It's wild, it's awesome when you think. I'm not only
- 11:17Speaker 2: am I on my thirteenth year now doing afternoon Drive
- 11:20Speaker 2: on QAM, but I had eight nine years with Dan
- 11:23Speaker 2: and you, and then I had a couple of years
- 11:26Speaker 2: doing mornings with Zaslow.
- 11:28Speaker 1: So you're talking about over twenty.
- 11:31Speaker 2: Years of being on the air in the Miami market
- 11:35Speaker 2: without a break. I had a three month break where
- 11:37Speaker 2: I had to sit out my note compete and my
- 11:40Speaker 2: contract at seven ninety the ticket when I was moving
- 11:43Speaker 2: to QAM. My contract at seven ninety the ticket expired
- 11:45Speaker 2: on December thirty first, so I had to sit out
- 11:48Speaker 2: the first three months of the year before I started
- 11:50Speaker 2: afternoon Drive at QAM, which meant I started April.
- 11:54Speaker 1: First, Yeah, which was wildly appropriate.
- 11:58Speaker 3: We are very fortunate that is not the norm in
- 12:01Speaker 3: this industry where guys like us get to do this
- 12:03Speaker 3: for as long as we've been doing it at the
- 12:05Speaker 3: levels we've been doing it at, and so I'm very
- 12:07Speaker 3: grateful for.
- 12:08Speaker 2: That, especially when some of the stuff we've done is this.
- 12:13Speaker 2: So Roberto Duran gets booked for the show, and I
- 12:18Speaker 2: believe it was a fight promoter who had called me.
- 12:23Speaker 2: He had done a bunch of stuff with Don King before.
- 12:25Speaker 2: Don King was a very good guest on the show.
- 12:27Speaker 2: He was always I mean, that guy delivered beyond what
- 12:32Speaker 2: you would need from any radio guest.
- 12:35Speaker 1: Don King always delivered. He gave you Max Don King,
- 12:39Speaker 1: Yes he did.
- 12:40Speaker 2: He was perfect. Sometimes he would come in studio. I
- 12:42Speaker 2: remember him coming in studio. Oh absolutely, Yeah.
- 12:45Speaker 1: So we book Roberto Duran.
- 12:47Speaker 2: He's coming for some event in Miami, and this is
- 12:50Speaker 2: a big name, and I know, I think we had
- 12:52Speaker 2: talked in one of the previous episodes, Taylor, you didn't
- 12:55Speaker 2: know who Roberto Duran was. But back in the eighties, Hagler, Duran, Chugar,
- 13:00Speaker 2: Ray Leonard, Tommy Hearns, it.
- 13:03Speaker 1: Was all about the middleweights.
- 13:05Speaker 2: Tommy Hearns's nickname hit Man, hit Man Man Hearns.
- 13:10Speaker 1: Ernie Shavers.
- 13:12Speaker 2: He really wasn't in that group, but I just wanted
- 13:14Speaker 2: to mention Ernie Shavers Savers.
- 13:17Speaker 3: By the way, Hank forty, it says somewhere between fourteen
- 13:20Speaker 3: and sixteen years as an afternoon drive host at w QA.
- 13:23Speaker 1: So I'm approaching that, which is a getting wild, man wild.
- 13:26Speaker 1: If I told you one day.
- 13:28Speaker 3: That you would host more consecutive years after new Drive
- 13:31Speaker 3: than the hammer you would out of the room.
- 13:34Speaker 1: Would not believe it. Literally would not believe it. I know.
- 13:38Speaker 2: Congratulations man, and much the way that people suggested BAM
- 13:44Speaker 2: should have come out of the game at eighty points.
- 13:47Speaker 2: In deference to Code eighty one, I'm going to hang
- 13:51Speaker 2: it up before I get to that sixteenth year.
- 13:54Speaker 1: In deference to Hank, are you really it's a lottery.
- 13:59Speaker 1: If you win the lottery, you're not going to do that.
- 14:01Speaker 2: I mean, by the way, for those who are big
- 14:04Speaker 2: you know radio fans from Miami from back in the day.
- 14:07Speaker 2: Joe Bell is the general manager at WQAM who hired
- 14:12Speaker 2: me away from seven ninety. The ticket Joe Bell had
- 14:15Speaker 2: tried to hire you and Dan and Joe Bell was
- 14:18Speaker 2: a market mainstay at QAM.
- 14:21Speaker 1: He left and he went.
- 14:23Speaker 2: To work in the Philadelphia market for a long time,
- 14:26Speaker 2: and so on and so forth. But I'm still friendly
- 14:28Speaker 2: with him. I talk with them every April First, because
- 14:32Speaker 2: we signed my contract. I couldn't even sign a contract
- 14:35Speaker 2: during my note compete, so we met at midnight at
- 14:38Speaker 2: a Denny's on April first. I went on the air
- 14:41Speaker 2: that day at two in the afternoon, but we met
- 14:44Speaker 2: at midnight at a Denny's to sign my contract.
- 14:47Speaker 1: So every April First I talked.
- 14:49Speaker 2: With Joe Bell and we reminisce about that day in
- 14:54Speaker 2: my career starting at QAM.
- 14:56Speaker 1: Joe Bell, just as.
- 14:57Speaker 2: An Aside, suffered a heart attack a couple of weeks ago,
- 15:00Speaker 2: has had a pacemaker installed, had some corrective surgery.
- 15:04Speaker 1: He is on the mend.
- 15:06Speaker 2: So those of you who used to listen to QAM,
- 15:08Speaker 2: Hank used to call him, or Neil Rodgers used to
- 15:10Speaker 2: call him Jolly Joe Bell. He used to make fun
- 15:13Speaker 2: of his weight all the time, and he ended up
- 15:15Speaker 2: losing a lot of weight. He's been skinny for many
- 15:18Speaker 2: many years now. But yeah, on the men from a
- 15:22Speaker 2: little heart.
- 15:23Speaker 3: Issue, they would make fun of him. That's what hosts do.
- 15:26Speaker 3: They make fun of management. But Joe Ball was excellent
- 15:28Speaker 3: at his job. He was very good, right, Yeah, he was.
- 15:31Speaker 3: So you've spoken to him thirteen times, is what you're saying.
- 15:35Speaker 1: Once a year. First, what you order at Denny's that night?
- 15:39Speaker 1: Do you remember?
- 15:40Speaker 2: So I remember what he ordered? I don't think I
- 15:46Speaker 2: was very hungry. It was midnight.
- 15:47Speaker 1: I knew I was gonna have to do my friend
- 15:48Speaker 1: show on QAM, like, but I couldn't wait till the
- 15:51Speaker 1: next morning.
- 15:52Speaker 2: I mean, he ordered a hangar steak right at Denny's
- 15:58Speaker 2: at midnike. But he was a hillbilly, like Joe Bell
- 16:02Speaker 2: was a hillbilly. Yes, And he ordered a hangar steak. So,
- 16:05Speaker 2: this real thin steak, and it looked exactly like you
- 16:09Speaker 2: would imagine it would look coming out of the kitchen
- 16:11Speaker 2: at Denny's at midnight, and like nothing you would ever eat.
- 16:16Speaker 2: And he took a few bites, and then he took
- 16:19Speaker 2: the salt shaker right and he poured.
- 16:22Speaker 1: Salt all over it.
- 16:24Speaker 2: And that's so he wouldn't eat anymore. That's how he
- 16:27Speaker 2: lost all that weight.
- 16:29Speaker 1: He so he would so much salt on it. We
- 16:32Speaker 1: get the enjoyment of eating some of his meal.
- 16:35Speaker 2: This is because I had several meals with him, and
- 16:37Speaker 2: then when he wanted to be done eating, he would
- 16:40Speaker 2: unscrew the top of the salt shaker and pour the
- 16:42Speaker 2: salt all over whatever he was eating, and then he
- 16:45Speaker 2: couldn't eat it any longer.
- 16:46Speaker 3: Well, he would salt it out. He would, he would
- 16:48Speaker 3: over salt it. That's I'm gonna try that. It's not
- 16:52Speaker 3: a bad methodology.
- 16:53Speaker 1: No, it's not.
- 16:55Speaker 3: I thought you were going to say he just dripped
- 16:56Speaker 3: it in salt. I was gonna say, hence the ticker issues.
- 16:58Speaker 1: I mean, but I'm glad away. Well, yes, here it is.
- 17:06Speaker 2: This is Roberto Durand so now you know, when we'd
- 17:09Speaker 2: have big guests coming up on the show, there'd be
- 17:12Speaker 2: a little buzz of activity and Dan would be looking
- 17:15Speaker 2: back towards the glass because we'd try to time it out. Obviously,
- 17:19Speaker 2: you come back from a break and then it's like, okay,
- 17:21Speaker 2: we're ready, do we have him on the phone, And
- 17:23Speaker 2: I'd be talking to him and I was probably my
- 17:26Speaker 2: guess is I just said, are you there, Roberto? Yes, okay,
- 17:32Speaker 2: you're gonna be on. Dan Lebtard is the name of
- 17:34Speaker 2: the host. His his co host is Stu Gotts. Okay,
- 17:39Speaker 2: put them on hold. I give you and Dan the
- 17:42Speaker 2: thumbs up, the yes and the okay.
- 17:44Speaker 3: He speaks English, you're thinking, I need to tell Dan
- 17:46Speaker 3: and Stu anything.
- 17:47Speaker 1: We're good at here.
- 17:48Speaker 2: So yeah, And because we're already back from commercial break,
- 17:51Speaker 2: it's not like I'm trying to get him to record
- 17:52Speaker 2: a drop, so this is quick. He's probably like, hey,
- 17:56Speaker 2: we got him, all right, let's go, let's go. We've
- 17:58Speaker 2: been waiting for him to call in and and here's
- 18:01Speaker 2: what transpires.
- 18:02Speaker 6: Roberto, how do you react when you're walking around and
- 18:05Speaker 6: you are a very famous fighter, you are a very
- 18:07Speaker 6: good fighter, Monos de Piedra hands of Stone. How do
- 18:11Speaker 6: you react when you're walking around and people shout at you.
- 18:17Speaker 4: An glaze much?
- 18:32Speaker 6: Okay, that would have been a good thing to know
- 18:34Speaker 6: before we started this. Let's play for him.
- 18:36Speaker 1: You're the way up. Evander Holyfield and l What I
- 18:42Speaker 1: asked is.
- 18:43Speaker 6: Evander Holyfield when he was on with us this is
- 18:45Speaker 6: a disaster. When he was on with us, Evander Holyfield,
- 18:49Speaker 6: I asked him about his workout regimen. I'm not now
- 18:51Speaker 6: going to get Roberto Duran to comment on it. Roberto
- 19:05Speaker 6: my my sentiments exactly. Roberto Durant joins us on seven
- 19:09Speaker 6: ninety the ticket. I've begun sweating profusely. I am sweating.
- 19:14Speaker 6: I am sweating through my shirt because nobody told me
- 19:18Speaker 6: that this was gonna happen.
- 19:20Speaker 1: Oh my god.
- 19:20Speaker 6: All right, Roberto, thank you so much for being on.
- 19:23Speaker 1: What's up? Okay? Thank you? Did you know how silent
- 19:33Speaker 1: I was? What were you gonna do? It was?
- 19:36Speaker 2: It was? It was, I mean talk about sweating. We're
- 19:39Speaker 2: all sweating. And here's the funny thing about Dan. You
- 19:45Speaker 2: know that Evander Holyfield sound that he played there, We
- 19:48Speaker 2: had played it a million times.
- 19:50Speaker 1: Remember we had a vander Vander Holyfield on. He couldn't
- 19:53Speaker 1: string two sentences together.
- 19:55Speaker 2: Yeah, he was so messed up, he couldn't string two
- 19:58Speaker 2: sentences together. And Dana asked him by his workout regimen
- 20:01Speaker 2: and he answered with this, I know. And we we
- 20:04Speaker 2: would play that for everyone, and we.
- 20:06Speaker 1: Would play it for any guest who came on.
- 20:09Speaker 2: We would say, hey, listen to what Evander Holyfield's exercise
- 20:13Speaker 2: regimen is and see how it compares to yours. And
- 20:15Speaker 2: we play that clip and everybody would be like, I
- 20:17Speaker 2: don't understand what he's saying, which was the joke. The
- 20:20Speaker 2: fact that Dan went through with it and still did
- 20:23Speaker 2: it while while the whole interview is up in flames,
- 20:28Speaker 2: is just a testament to how panicked he was.
- 20:32Speaker 1: Yes, because he couldn't understand Dan.
- 20:36Speaker 2: How the hell is he going to get the joke
- 20:37Speaker 2: of the Evander Holyfield clip.
- 20:41Speaker 1: But he was reeling. He was in a tough spot,
- 20:43Speaker 1: and then he went to reset.
- 20:44Speaker 3: He thought he was going to continue with Duran, and
- 20:47Speaker 3: then he ended up not doing it.
- 20:48Speaker 1: But not your listen. I hope it doesn't haunt you.
- 20:51Speaker 1: I hope it doesn't keep you up at night. He
- 20:53Speaker 1: did say yes, and okay, I mean and then and
- 20:55Speaker 1: then Roberto Duran.
- 20:56Speaker 2: At the end, he realizes this is terrible and he's like,
- 20:59Speaker 2: I try English, Nah, Jack, We're good.
- 21:07Speaker 4: Chance.
- 21:08Speaker 1: Should have played a game of yes or no with them.
- 21:10Speaker 1: I play it one more time.
- 21:12Speaker 2: Because the way that Dan just launches into the Evander
- 21:15Speaker 2: Holyfield sound without having the situational awareness, this is like
- 21:22Speaker 2: one of the Boozer twins at the end of that
- 21:24Speaker 2: Duke and Yukotton game the other night, where I feel
- 21:27Speaker 2: like the situational awareness may have been off a little
- 21:30Speaker 2: bit Dan's got to have a little more situational awareness.
- 21:34Speaker 1: Although now that I'm thinking it through, Dan's buying himself
- 21:37Speaker 1: some time. That's all he was doing. Dan's buyinglf some time.
- 21:40Speaker 2: I can fire off this sound and give me fifteen
- 21:43Speaker 2: seconds to recalibrate what I'm doing here, even though there's
- 21:47Speaker 2: no saving it. Fifteen seconds he learned to speak English,
- 21:53Speaker 2: or maybe the earth will have exploded and none of
- 21:57Speaker 2: this will matter one more time because there's so much
- 22:01Speaker 2: going on here. Dan comes out of the box. Yeah,
- 22:04Speaker 2: good boxing question, Good Roberto Duran question.
- 22:07Speaker 1: What's it like to be you? Yes?
- 22:10Speaker 3: And people need to realize hawk that Dan is a perfectionist,
- 22:14Speaker 3: which is one of the reasons the show.
- 22:15Speaker 1: Like he really.
- 22:16Speaker 3: Cares about this stuff, and he cares about boxing in
- 22:20Speaker 3: a weird way where he turns into like Larry Merchant
- 22:22Speaker 3: every time there's a big fight on. He really cares
- 22:25Speaker 3: about this sport and he's excited to have Roberto Duran on. Yeah,
- 22:29Speaker 3: at that time, as you pointed out, the middleweights were
- 22:32Speaker 3: the heavyweights.
- 22:33Speaker 1: They were the stars of the sport. Well, this one,
- 22:35Speaker 1: I mean, it wasn't that that.
- 22:36Speaker 2: I mean at that time, it wasn't because it was
- 22:38Speaker 2: in the eighties, but this, this is in the early
- 22:40Speaker 2: two thousands.
- 22:40Speaker 1: Bus Duran was growing up. Roberto Duran was a hero.
- 22:44Speaker 3: Yes, definitely, Thomas Hear and Sugar Ray Leonard that that
- 22:47Speaker 3: entire that entire class, that was the most exciting class.
- 22:51Speaker 2: But man, it goes south like from the first answer
- 22:55Speaker 2: he goes, yeah, I don't really speak English and Dan
- 23:01Speaker 2: as anyone would. By the way, Dan doesn't know. There's
- 23:05Speaker 2: the Luckily Dan speaks Spanish, right.
- 23:08Speaker 3: So when Dan says here and the audience is gonna
- 23:11Speaker 3: hear it would have been nice to know on the
- 23:12Speaker 3: front end. Did you look through him in the glass
- 23:15Speaker 3: and say, oh, you're talking English to me?
- 23:17Speaker 2: I mean one hundred percent that is a that is
- 23:19Speaker 2: a dart in my forehead. Would have been nice to
- 23:23Speaker 2: know this beforehand. That is that is an air dart
- 23:28Speaker 2: right into my forehead.
- 23:30Speaker 1: He's only speaking to one person. Yeah, play it again, Taylor.
- 23:36Speaker 6: Roberto, how do you react when you're walking around and
- 23:38Speaker 6: you are a very famous fighter, You are very good fighter.
- 23:42Speaker 6: Monos de Piedra Hands of Stone. How do you react
- 23:45Speaker 6: when you're walking around and people shout.
- 23:48Speaker 4: At you and no one slam and Glens is too much.
- 24:06Speaker 6: Okay, that would have been a good thing to know
- 24:07Speaker 6: before we started this. Let's play for him. You're the
- 24:09Speaker 6: way I way up. Vander Holyfield and La. What I
- 24:15Speaker 6: asked is Evander Holyfield when he was on with us,
- 24:18Speaker 6: this is a disaster. When he was on with US,
- 24:21Speaker 6: Evander Holyfield, I asked him about his workout regimen. I'm
- 24:24Speaker 6: not now going to get Roberto Durant to comment on it. Roberto,
- 24:38Speaker 6: my my sentiments exactly. Roberto Durant joins us on seven
- 24:43Speaker 6: ninety the ticket. I've begun sweating profusely. I am sweating.
- 24:48Speaker 6: I am sweating through my shirt because nobody told me
- 24:51Speaker 6: that this was gonna happen.
- 24:53Speaker 1: Oh my god.
- 24:54Speaker 6: All right, Roberto, thank you so much for being on.
- 24:56Speaker 4: What's okay? Thank you?
- 25:00Speaker 3: Okay, you are so right about the situational awareness.
- 25:08Speaker 1: Just hold on to the ball. Just get out a
- 25:18Speaker 1: couple other dms. You can't understand you, you think.
- 25:24Speaker 4: Nothing.
- 25:26Speaker 2: And then he said to him to EXTRACTO, like what
- 25:30Speaker 2: do you extract from that?
- 25:31Speaker 1: Sound like what? And he responds with hah, which we
- 25:36Speaker 1: played on the show.
- 25:38Speaker 2: A million times. That became part of the Suey montage.
- 25:41Speaker 2: Roberto Duran saying huh yeah, made it worth it. You
- 25:45Speaker 2: can DM me if there's something you want to hear
- 25:47Speaker 2: on this podcast Radio Mark Hackman on Instagram, or you
- 25:51Speaker 2: can just message me something like this, Mark Greetings. I
- 25:55Speaker 2: started listening to Levittard when they hit ESPN. I was
- 25:58Speaker 2: in the army, so I missed your time on the show.
- 26:01Speaker 2: I am also one of the many listeners missing Stu
- 26:03Speaker 2: Gotts on the show. I'm living it up in Bali
- 26:06Speaker 2: for the last Bali for the last ten years, and
- 26:09Speaker 2: my days driving two hours to different parts of the
- 26:12Speaker 2: island are made more exciting because you and Stu bring
- 26:17Speaker 2: back these past bits and they're fantastic. Hearing you talking
- 26:20Speaker 2: about poop shoes had me laughing so damn hard I
- 26:23Speaker 2: almost lost control driving my bike down a fucking volcano.
- 26:27Speaker 1: Thank you for what you do. You appreciate that. Yes,
- 26:31Speaker 1: we thank you for your service, of course. Yes.
- 26:34Speaker 2: Oh this is the email for Stu Gotts and Hawkman.
- 26:36Speaker 2: Is there any backstory worth telling about the Roberto Duran interview.
- 26:40Speaker 2: I just remember it being a very uncomfortable interview for Dan.
- 26:43Speaker 2: Those were always some of the funnier moments on the show.
- 26:45Speaker 2: Well you just got it.
- 26:48Speaker 1: Not what you asked for man somebody. Yeah, this was
- 26:54Speaker 1: interesting to me. Mark.
- 26:55Speaker 2: Been really enjoying the throwback stuff you've been doing with
- 26:57Speaker 2: Stu Gotts. It's what the Butard Show retrospective tried to be. Anyway,
- 27:03Speaker 2: when you guys recently did some of your hokey pokey songs,
- 27:06Speaker 2: you never got to my favorite one, which I think
- 27:08Speaker 2: is an underrated gem. It was the one about Nick
- 27:11Speaker 2: Saban not knowing how to throw the challenge flag when
- 27:14Speaker 2: he was with the Dolphins.
- 27:15Speaker 1: Can you find it and play it? I do have
- 27:17Speaker 1: that one.
- 27:18Speaker 2: I chose not to play it when we did the
- 27:19Speaker 2: Poke episode because I didn't think that one was very good.
- 27:22Speaker 1: But we will go back and.
- 27:23Speaker 2: Play that one because I'll do all the requests that
- 27:25Speaker 2: we that we do get.
- 27:27Speaker 3: Yes, your request turns into an episode, so we're good.
- 27:31Speaker 1: Yeah, roberta Duran thing is funny, all right.
- 27:34Speaker 2: So we'll get in to the Stephen Sagall at Stephen
- 27:38Speaker 2: Sagall episode in the next episode because I have some
- 27:42Speaker 2: great cuts from that.
- 27:45Speaker 3: But as we said, back to back badasses and you
- 27:48Speaker 3: were and you were, and you were apologizing for not
- 27:50Speaker 3: having a second badass on we just had Roberto Duran.
- 27:53Speaker 1: Yeah, you know.
- 27:54Speaker 2: To be quite honest, it does fall into the badass theme.
- 27:57Speaker 3: Yes, I mean Roberto duran Is pro would probably kick
- 28:01Speaker 3: Steven Segall's ass.
- 28:02Speaker 1: I don't know, just yeah, he was a real fighter.
- 28:04Speaker 2: Really well though, it's all I guess, would consider himself
- 28:09Speaker 2: a real fighter. All right, as we end every with
- 28:11Speaker 2: Steve gottson Hawkman, you have to name three nicknames from athletes.
- 28:16Speaker 1: Okay, I'm nervous, stand musual stand the man? Right? Oscar
- 28:24Speaker 1: de la Joya? Oh the kid? So no, this could
- 28:29Speaker 1: be a tough one for me. Resets to one. Oh
- 28:36Speaker 1: we go back. Yeah, you gotta get three in a row. Oscar,
- 28:43Speaker 1: I don't know it. Golden Boy, the Golden Boy? What
- 28:47Speaker 1: did I call him? The kid?
- 28:48Speaker 3: That was Ken Griffy Junior? Jesus, all right, go ahead,
- 28:51Speaker 3: rayfer Alston sweets something.
- 29:01Speaker 1: Skip to my lou. Did you know that Taylor too?
- 29:04Speaker 4: Damn it?
- 29:05Speaker 3: God, we spent a lot of time on Raypah Austin
- 29:07Speaker 3: skipped to my Lou. I haven't thought about rayper Austen
- 29:09Speaker 3: in a long time. Anyway, God, would you? I don't know,
- 29:12Speaker 3: I mean, Jesus, I'm very disappointed. I'm very disappointed with
- 29:16Speaker 3: Oscar de la Hoya. If I'm being honest, Pete Rose,
- 29:20Speaker 3: Charlie Hustle, all right, don't get disappointed.
- 29:23Speaker 1: You can't go man at myself.
- 29:24Speaker 3: I mean skip to my fucking loud Jesus Christ, Frank Thomas,
- 29:33Speaker 3: Big Hurt, and uh Joe Namath Broadway.
- 29:38Speaker 1: Joey's overrated. I cannot believe I got skipped to my
- 29:41Speaker 1: lou wrong. I mean rafer Alston Stories next show. We'll
- 29:46Speaker 1: see you on the next Pod with Stu Gotts and
- 29:51Speaker 1: Hawkman
