- 1:01Speaker 3: on a wire.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Well, that's what I was just looking at too. And
- 1:04Speaker 2: this is we've We've We've got a new setup in
- 1:08Speaker 2: the the studio. I say with air quotes that I
- 1:11Speaker 2: think we've all for all parties involved, have have realized
- 1:16Speaker 2: it's a pretty easy It's a much easier set up
- 1:18Speaker 2: than I like it, but like it. Part of it
- 1:21Speaker 2: does include free roaming cats.
- 1:24Speaker 3: That well, and that's part of the joy.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Yeah. So anyway, how are you doing today, Brandon good Man?
- 1:30Speaker 2: I don't know what month it is, June. It is
- 1:33Speaker 2: June of twenty six.
- 1:35Speaker 3: We're in the we're in the yucky part of the summer.
- 1:38Speaker 2: Summer blockbuster season though.
- 1:39Speaker 3: Yeah. No, yeah, we're in the thick of it. The
- 1:44Speaker 3: Passion of the Christ too is out. It's been a
- 1:47Speaker 3: big deal.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Okay, it is real.
- 1:50Speaker 3: It's called the Resurrection of Christ. Whether it's out right
- 1:53Speaker 3: now as people hear this, I'm not sure.
- 1:55Speaker 2: I can't remember.
- 1:56Speaker 3: It is real. It is a real thing.
- 1:58Speaker 2: I can't remember if this episode is the first or
- 2:00Speaker 2: second episode.
- 2:01Speaker 3: Oh god, now we're really screwed.
- 2:03Speaker 2: It's either you've either heard the Virgin suicides already or
- 2:07Speaker 2: that's coming up next.
- 2:12Speaker 3: Yeah, tighten up, whatever whatever the case may be.
- 2:15Speaker 2: At the stage, and as we're off to do on
- 2:18Speaker 2: movie review, rewind we have brought in the big guns.
- 2:22Speaker 2: He is our buddy, Brett. Brett, how are you doing today?
- 2:24Speaker 4: Hey, I'm I'm good. I'm glad to be back you.
- 2:27Speaker 4: I don't know if you guys remember I was on
- 2:29Speaker 4: that cruise for a while that it was on the
- 2:32Speaker 4: news like it disappeared.
- 2:33Speaker 2: Yeah, what happened with that?
- 2:36Speaker 4: You know, we I'm not really at liberty to say
- 2:40Speaker 4: right now, but I am glad to be.
- 2:42Speaker 3: Bad dolphins blink twice if it was dolphins.
- 2:46Speaker 4: Well there were dolphins there, yes, on the cruise. Yeah,
- 2:52Speaker 4: well we were. We were headed for Thailand and next
- 2:55Speaker 4: thing I knew we.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Were in the Ukraine.
- 2:57Speaker 3: Whoa yeah, yeah, uh things. I got Google Cruises to
- 3:03Speaker 3: Thailand because I think that's that sounds it sounds.
- 3:06Speaker 2: I realized it was.
- 3:07Speaker 3: You could sign up for a three month cruise, three promotion.
- 3:11Speaker 4: It was unexpected. But I'm glad to be back, is
- 3:14Speaker 4: my point.
- 3:15Speaker 3: Yeah, no, I would be too.
- 3:16Speaker 2: Yeah, and uh, you know, I can't think of a
- 3:21Speaker 2: better way to bring him at home. No, I can't.
- 3:25Speaker 3: I was imagine, thank god, you know.
- 3:28Speaker 4: Nothing was going to keep me from this.
- 3:29Speaker 3: Yeah, we said, hey, I don't know if you can
- 3:32Speaker 3: make it, but we got a pretty important movie to
- 3:35Speaker 3: come home to. So for those that don't swim, he
- 3:39Speaker 3: swam here.
- 3:41Speaker 2: For those of that don't beach, you can hear the
- 3:46Speaker 2: waves crashing, crashing against the beach as we record. The
- 3:51Speaker 2: mask is obviously referring to the Jim Carrey nineties classic
- 3:56Speaker 2: If you Will, based on a comic book, which I
- 4:00Speaker 2: did not even realize until I started putting my notes
- 4:03Speaker 2: together for the show.
- 4:04Speaker 3: I knew about it was after I'd already seen it
- 4:06Speaker 3: as a kid, and I realized, oh, this is actually
- 4:09Speaker 3: like based on something.
- 4:11Speaker 2: And apparently the comic book was not a slapstick comedy.
- 4:17Speaker 2: It was very dark, very graphic, very I don't well,
- 4:23Speaker 2: I don't know. I didn't read it, but apparently they
- 4:27Speaker 2: were trying to get this project off of the ground,
- 4:29Speaker 2: but studios kept saying, no, it's too violent, it's too dark.
- 4:34Speaker 3: Was originally a dog.
- 4:36Speaker 2: I don't know. There are a few. There are a
- 4:39Speaker 2: few like what ifs, like Jim Carrey. I don't think
- 4:43Speaker 2: this was all right taken a page out of mccash's playbook.
- 4:49Speaker 2: I don't think this was written with Jim Carrey in mind.
- 4:55Speaker 2: It was more about, like, we've got the comic book property,
- 4:58Speaker 2: let's make a movie out of this, and Jim Carrey
- 5:01Speaker 2: ends up being sort of I don't want to say,
- 5:04Speaker 2: a blessing in disguise, but this is kind of an
- 5:06Speaker 2: instance where everything just kind of falls.
- 5:09Speaker 3: Into I'm a little surprised to hear that, because the
- 5:13Speaker 3: one thing I thought of all these years later rewatching
- 5:16Speaker 3: it for this is that this is the perfect vehicle
- 5:20Speaker 3: for the physicality that Jim Carrey brings, especially in the
- 5:25Speaker 3: early nineties, where there's no other man that can have
- 5:28Speaker 3: those facial expressions. I mean, there's just they don't exist.
- 5:32Speaker 3: It's it's his, it's it's I can't imagine anything different.
- 5:37Speaker 2: You brought up the physicality of Jim Carrey because there
- 5:40Speaker 2: is a tidbit researching this film I found where he
- 5:43Speaker 2: actually saved them money on CGI because he could actually
- 5:48Speaker 2: could he could actually move I believe it.
- 5:53Speaker 3: Where the mask itself is on there, but it it
- 5:57Speaker 3: goes to his fantastic, outlandish facial expressions where yeah, how
- 6:05Speaker 3: many times can you think of like he fits the
- 6:09Speaker 3: cartoonish version of this movie, where I mean, forget the nineties,
- 6:17Speaker 3: I just don't think anybody could do it like him.
- 6:19Speaker 3: I tried, by the way, with Son of Masks work out.
- 6:24Speaker 2: So another component of the Jim Carrey factor here. The
- 6:29Speaker 2: teeth were prosthetics that they had designed for shots where
- 6:34Speaker 2: he did not have to talk because they were so bulky.
- 6:41Speaker 2: But Jim Carrey learned how to talk with them in
- 6:44Speaker 2: his mouth, so they ran with it, and it's like,
- 6:47Speaker 2: it's so funny to read they had they had considered
- 6:52Speaker 2: Rick Moranis for the role. Yes, Rick Mah, Robin Williams.
- 6:59Speaker 3: I could see Martin and Robin Williams. I really could.
- 7:03Speaker 2: Yeah, Nicholas Cage was considered for this role. Maybe the
- 7:08Speaker 2: Matthew Broderick, which is a that feels like a very
- 7:11Speaker 2: different movie, but it all place.
- 7:16Speaker 3: Feels like the most like you'll get the most bang
- 7:20Speaker 3: out of your butt.
- 7:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm really but he did.
- 7:24Speaker 3: Flubber, so it's fine, that's true, But.
- 7:28Speaker 2: This does kind of feel like, in hindsight, everything worked
- 7:32Speaker 2: out pretty perfectly because this is for for I don't
- 7:38Speaker 2: know how you guys would frame this. I don't want
- 7:40Speaker 2: to speak for either of you, but I don't feel
- 7:42Speaker 2: like this movie ages particularly well. But it does still
- 7:47Speaker 2: register something in me as that quintessential Jim Carrey run,
- 7:53Speaker 2: his whole Camania run. Yeah, and it's it's hard for
- 7:57Speaker 2: me to imagine anybody else playing the mask, and once
- 8:02Speaker 2: you see him on screen, for me, it's hard to
- 8:05Speaker 2: imagine anybody else playing this character.
- 8:07Speaker 3: Absolutely absolutely, And I remember when we were first talking
- 8:11Speaker 3: about doing this, and Brett said, besides the Godfather, this
- 8:16Speaker 3: is the quintessential cinematic event. Yeah, and he loves it.
- 8:21Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah, that's why I came back from my crew Beach.
- 8:26Speaker 3: It's why you swam to Myrtle Beach. Yeah. No, it
- 8:30Speaker 3: really and honestly and everything it worked out. Jim Carrey,
- 8:33Speaker 3: it really is the savior of it because I I
- 8:36Speaker 3: just don't know a person that can bend and shape
- 8:40Speaker 3: the way that he does. But it's so cartoonish, outlandish,
- 8:45Speaker 3: and I have no idea about the comics. I've never
- 8:47Speaker 3: read it. I didn't even know about it when I
- 8:49Speaker 3: first saw it as a kid. But that's the highlight.
- 8:55Speaker 3: Like the story itself, I think is a mess. I
- 8:58Speaker 3: think anytime the mask is all anybody else, it's I do.
- 9:03Speaker 3: It does not work. I do remember the villain one because.
- 9:05Speaker 2: I remember terrified as a child.
- 9:08Speaker 3: Yes, and you know he recently and I don't know
- 9:10Speaker 3: the actor's name, but he recently passed away. And that
- 9:12Speaker 3: was one of the things because he was he was
- 9:14Speaker 3: I felt like it was a villain in the eighties
- 9:16Speaker 3: and nineties, very recognizable, and he had he had passed away, And.
- 9:23Speaker 4: Isn't he one of the guys with the gimp in
- 9:25Speaker 4: pulp fiction.
- 9:26Speaker 3: He is, he is.
- 9:29Speaker 2: It's a good.
- 9:32Speaker 4: I think about the Jim.
- 9:33Speaker 3: Carrie does it, and let me tell you, I think
- 9:35Speaker 3: of like the thing is to me I and when
- 9:40Speaker 3: especially rewatching it, only because I have seen this other
- 9:43Speaker 3: movie more than a few times. I feel like with
- 9:47Speaker 3: Jim Carrey and just his gift to be able to
- 9:51Speaker 3: shape with his face and stuff reminded me of how
- 9:56Speaker 3: why it worked so well when he did the gripch
- 9:58Speaker 3: in two thousand oh there, and he talks about the
- 10:01Speaker 3: smile and other interviews when he's done, when he's been
- 10:03Speaker 3: in the Sonic movies. But there is something about it
- 10:06Speaker 3: where the fact you don't need effects because this guy
- 10:12Speaker 3: put it on him and then he can roll with it.
- 10:15Speaker 3: It means so much. But I really wish the movie
- 10:19Speaker 3: was better. And you know, the mask is considered. I mean,
- 10:21Speaker 3: I've seen a lot of people say that this is
- 10:23Speaker 3: one of their favorite Jim Carrey movies. It is not mine.
- 10:27Speaker 3: Rewatching it, I'm like, yeah, it's just I'm an ace
- 10:30Speaker 3: ventura liar, liar kind of guy. But I think what
- 10:37Speaker 3: what most people may not realize is in what's kind
- 10:39Speaker 3: of surprising is like this is Cameron d has his
- 10:43Speaker 3: first feature film.
- 10:45Speaker 2: One of my notes he welcome to our dream.
- 10:48Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, and she's very much played up in that way.
- 10:54Speaker 2: I want to ask you guys about this real quick.
- 10:56Speaker 2: The critic consensus on Rotten Tomatoes. Which would you be
- 11:00Speaker 2: surprised to hear that critics are higher on this film
- 11:02Speaker 2: than the audience.
- 11:04Speaker 3: I am a little surprised.
- 11:06Speaker 2: On the Tomato meter, sixty eight on the popcorn.
- 11:09Speaker 3: Meter, eighty one for the mask on Yeah and it's
- 11:13Speaker 3: I think it would be the opposite.
- 11:15Speaker 2: On Rotten Tomatoes list of the best movies of nineteen
- 11:18Speaker 2: ninety four, it comes in at twenty nine based on
- 11:21Speaker 2: the Tomato Meter.
- 11:22Speaker 3: Well, depending on what the other twenty eight are, that
- 11:24Speaker 3: might be.
- 11:24Speaker 2: I just close out at the tab. I could have told.
- 11:26Speaker 3: You, but I are you professional or what? But uh,
- 11:30Speaker 3: I've been doing this for seventeen years. But yeah, I
- 11:34Speaker 3: I'm I'm I actually thought it would be the it
- 11:35Speaker 3: would be the opposite. I would not if you said, hey,
- 11:39Speaker 3: let's just pretend you're mcash. If you can, you do
- 11:41Speaker 3: your impression of m cash.
- 11:43Speaker 2: Let's pretend drinking with that. You know, you hear feelings
- 11:49Speaker 2: the critics was eighty one and the audience is six.
- 11:54Speaker 3: That that's that'd be hard to digest, to be honest,
- 11:57Speaker 3: because a lot of people I thought on this movie,
- 12:01Speaker 3: I think a lot of it is doing a childhood
- 12:04Speaker 3: It is introduction to Jim Care, I'm I'm not sure.
- 12:08Speaker 2: Well, I mean, you think about nineties kids, which we're
- 12:10Speaker 2: all nineties kids at this table comic book, the movie.
- 12:15Speaker 2: There was an animated series that came out, Yeah, figures
- 12:19Speaker 2: that came out. It was kind of a cultural phenomenon
- 12:24Speaker 2: for kids of a certain age.
- 12:26Speaker 3: Yeah, And I think and I remember, and the thing is,
- 12:29Speaker 3: and this is sort of strange, but it recently, like
- 12:33Speaker 3: within the last year or so, got a four K
- 12:36Speaker 3: release and people are like, oh, finally and stuff, and I'm.
- 12:40Speaker 2: Like, well, that's when like the reboot starts. Yeah, but
- 12:42Speaker 2: I'm like that starts up.
- 12:45Speaker 3: Yeah, it is a bit strange to me. And now
- 12:48Speaker 3: just so happens where we were doing this episode.
- 12:53Speaker 2: I think it's I'm curious to your thoughts on this, Brett,
- 12:55Speaker 2: because I know you're particularly nostalgic about this too. But
- 12:59Speaker 2: it was such a piece of cultural zeitgeist in the nineties.
- 13:03Speaker 2: It was the character but I think it was it
- 13:06Speaker 2: was Jim Carrey and that I jokingly called it his
- 13:09Speaker 2: whole co Mania run. But like the nineties were, and
- 13:14Speaker 2: I remember like us being kids and just this being
- 13:18Speaker 2: the funniest thing on the planet, Like, is that what
- 13:24Speaker 2: has people still talking about it all these years later?
- 13:27Speaker 2: Is that just what it caught? I don't I don't
- 13:31Speaker 2: want to say lightning in a bottle, But it was
- 13:33Speaker 2: sort of the right ingredients the right time to create
- 13:38Speaker 2: something that was going to have a lasting impression on
- 13:41Speaker 2: younger people at that time.
- 13:43Speaker 4: You know, there's a meme about before memes, dudes just
- 13:49Speaker 4: used to sit around and say line from The Chappelle
- 13:51Speaker 4: Show to one another. Yeah, yeah, And this was one
- 13:53Speaker 4: of those things. I think in elementary school, like it
- 13:56Speaker 4: was somebody stopped me smoking.
- 13:59Speaker 2: Like I can't tell you how many times I heard
- 14:02Speaker 2: a ten year old Brandon Vick say, look, my I'm roadkill.
- 14:07Speaker 3: Really yeah, I do not remember saying that as all.
- 14:09Speaker 2: When I heard that, I was like, oh, that's where
- 14:13Speaker 2: Brandon got that from. When we were kids used to
- 14:16Speaker 2: say it all the time, running around in it. Yeah,
- 14:19Speaker 2: let me tell you, let me you know, there were
- 14:20Speaker 2: a lot of there were a lot of mass quotes
- 14:22Speaker 2: from this movie. I was like, oh, I remember being a.
- 14:26Speaker 3: Child, I quoted ace Ventura like crazy. Yeah, So to
- 14:32Speaker 3: me when someone says, oh, nineties and Jim Carrey, I
- 14:35Speaker 3: think of like both ace Ventura movies.
- 14:38Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:38Speaker 3: Like I would literally like be in character like a
- 14:42Speaker 3: wrestler and my parents had asked me what's for dinner?
- 14:45Speaker 3: And I would quote something from a Sventura too, yeah,
- 14:48Speaker 3: which I know wasn't as popular, but like, I'll be honest,
- 14:51Speaker 3: I like there's a lot of scenes where like he
- 14:54Speaker 3: kind of takes over and the uh, what is it
- 14:59Speaker 3: like with the what what's the shakes him, the moroccas,
- 15:04Speaker 3: the Morocca's like that. Like there's so many scenes I
- 15:06Speaker 3: remember of it, but I don't. I remember smoking stuff,
- 15:09Speaker 3: but I don't ever remember actually quoting any of it.
- 15:12Speaker 3: But I think it was like a Halloween thing, like it.
- 15:14Speaker 2: Was a big deals were the mask I remember that, Yeah.
- 15:18Speaker 3: But I but if someone said, hey, which one would
- 15:21Speaker 3: you quote more? I would say, oh, I mean Aventura
- 15:23Speaker 3: for sure.
- 15:24Speaker 2: By the way, this is like the drama where I
- 15:27Speaker 2: am in this in this memory of mine, I am
- 15:30Speaker 2: forty years old and Brandon is ten years old saying
- 15:34Speaker 2: look my road.
- 15:35Speaker 3: Look, And then I think, why would I I don't
- 15:38Speaker 3: even know how I would say it.
- 15:40Speaker 2: It was it was during backyard wrestling matches. Oh okay, yeah,
- 15:44Speaker 2: I'm pretty sure, which makes total sense.
- 15:46Speaker 3: Yeah, it was pretty clever.
- 15:48Speaker 4: I mean, I have a ten year old and I
- 15:49Speaker 4: can imagine him saying it right now.
- 15:51Speaker 3: I mean honestly, I mean, I guess, and the smoking
- 15:55Speaker 3: and you know, I mean it makes sense. It's just
- 15:58Speaker 3: kind of funny when you watch it now, because like
- 16:02Speaker 3: I could quote stuff from between ace Ventur and Batman
- 16:05Speaker 3: forever before I would go to the mask at this
- 16:07Speaker 3: at this stage. So yeah, it is funny kind of
- 16:10Speaker 3: seeing it and being like, oh yeah, that like it
- 16:12Speaker 3: was a thing. People definitely were drawn to it and
- 16:16Speaker 3: thought it was funny or fun or whatever.
- 16:20Speaker 2: Watching this again at thirty nine years old, I've got
- 16:24Speaker 2: a few more weeks before I'm forty. Yeah, watching this
- 16:27Speaker 2: again at thirty nine, it did feel there was an
- 16:31Speaker 2: element of it that felt dark, And the only way
- 16:33Speaker 2: I know how to describe it is like if you
- 16:36Speaker 2: guys heard of the Uncanny Valley phenomenon, where it's like
- 16:39Speaker 2: something that appears to be human but it's not actually human,
- 16:42Speaker 2: so it kind of gives you the creeps, like your
- 16:45Speaker 2: senses tingle a little bit. That's kind of what this
- 16:49Speaker 2: movie felt like to me, where this is all slapstick stuff,
- 16:53Speaker 2: but I'm also watching it like this is kind of dark.
- 16:58Speaker 2: This is kind of serious situations that he's just facing
- 17:03Speaker 2: it like spongebomb. Yeah. So when you say that, you
- 17:08Speaker 2: watch this and you see how we get to the
- 17:11Speaker 2: Grinch later on in Carrie's career, I'm watching it like
- 17:16Speaker 2: I see a little bit of the cable guy in this. Yeah,
- 17:20Speaker 2: well when he becomes the Master.
- 17:22Speaker 3: Yeah, there's a little darkness in there.
- 17:24Speaker 2: To me, it kind of comes back to Jim Carrey
- 17:27Speaker 2: just being the heart of this thing, which you know,
- 17:31Speaker 2: we can talk about Cameron Diaz. I found the quote.
- 17:33Speaker 2: I wanted to read about that, But I mean, is
- 17:37Speaker 2: this the thing the critics talk about it and they say,
- 17:41Speaker 2: like the exact quote is it misses perhaps as often
- 17:45Speaker 2: as it hits. But Jim Carrey's manic bomb bast, the
- 17:49Speaker 2: film's overall cartoony bomb bast, keep the mask afloat. It's
- 17:55Speaker 2: interesting to me that we can take different things out
- 17:58Speaker 2: of Carrie's performance here, but the heart and soul of
- 18:01Speaker 2: this film still kind of comes back to Carrie's performance.
- 18:04Speaker 3: Yeah, well, I mean in so many ways he he
- 18:10Speaker 3: I mean, he is the movie.
- 18:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:12Speaker 3: You can't get that kind of thing from many people.
- 18:15Speaker 3: And even if let's just say Robin Williams was in
- 18:19Speaker 3: this role, it would be still be a different movie. Yeah,
- 18:21Speaker 3: but he is an up and comer and Jim Carrey
- 18:24Speaker 3: is very much in his prime of how he could
- 18:29Speaker 3: tort himself and making, you know, and making all these things.
- 18:33Speaker 3: And that's where the grants really pops up into my mind,
- 18:36Speaker 3: is that you can put something on him of it,
- 18:38Speaker 3: you can let him run, and he'll run with it.
- 18:40Speaker 3: And that's that's who he is. He's he does that
- 18:43Speaker 3: in the Sonic movies. Now like you can't. That's just
- 18:46Speaker 3: you can't take that away from him. That's just who
- 18:48Speaker 3: he is. But I think I think it works better
- 18:54Speaker 3: because it's the nineties and we're willing to let it
- 19:00Speaker 3: is insane as it is. But imagine someone else or
- 19:04Speaker 3: anything that is not Jim Carrey, and I don't think
- 19:08Speaker 3: you leave with that same memorable experience. And no matter
- 19:12Speaker 3: who it is, including Cameron Diaz, I don't think you're there,
- 19:16Speaker 3: like you have to have someone that is that kind
- 19:19Speaker 3: of performer who literally is physically changing what this character
- 19:25Speaker 3: is supposed to be, even from the comic books, and
- 19:30Speaker 3: be able to deliver a performance like that. To me,
- 19:34Speaker 3: this is exactly the like it. It showcases the strength
- 19:40Speaker 3: of what of what Jim Carrey can truly do, for
- 19:44Speaker 3: better or for worse. Sometimes it's so indulgent that it's like, okay,
- 19:48Speaker 3: but without it, I really don't know what this movie is,
- 19:53Speaker 3: and I don't think it would. I don't think it'd
- 19:56Speaker 3: be nearly as memorable if it wasn't Jim Carrey saying it.
- 20:00Speaker 4: I'm really surprised with that tomato meter reading the more
- 20:05Speaker 4: that I think about it, because it's what you said,
- 20:08Speaker 4: Like for a ten year old kid, You've got all
- 20:12Speaker 4: these one liners that I can say on the playground
- 20:15Speaker 4: to kids, You've got this like dream scenario, like you
- 20:19Speaker 4: turn into this superhero kind of figure and do whatever
- 20:23Speaker 4: you want, and so like, of course kids love it.
- 20:25Speaker 4: It's the same reason my kids love the new Super
- 20:29Speaker 4: Mario Galaxy movie. That's not a movie, it's just a
- 20:32Speaker 4: bunch of cutscenes of that.
- 20:34Speaker 3: Yeah, and so so it's very Yes, yeah, yeah, and
- 20:39Speaker 3: it's so it's it's surprising that adults.
- 20:42Speaker 4: I mean, I do wonder if some of it is
- 20:44Speaker 4: like you said, because it was the nineties, like just
- 20:47Speaker 4: the view of those kind of things were different, whereas
- 20:50Speaker 4: now everyone's going to say, like in a landscape of
- 20:54Speaker 4: like prestige TV and the way movies are now, Like
- 20:58Speaker 4: where were the layers in this and like what was
- 21:00Speaker 4: the source of Sure you're not.
- 21:02Speaker 3: Getting Yeah, you're not getting the same shit you did
- 21:05Speaker 3: back then now, Like yeah, that it wouldn't fly even
- 21:07Speaker 3: if Jim Carrey was an quote unquote newcomer. It came
- 21:12Speaker 3: out at the right time, and I think that's why
- 21:14Speaker 3: people are. I kind of have this fondness about it.
- 21:18Speaker 3: But it's not that like it's not that great of
- 21:21Speaker 3: a movie to me. But if people loved it for
- 21:24Speaker 3: certain reasons, and Carrie probably is most of it, I
- 21:28Speaker 3: under I understand it.
- 21:30Speaker 2: Yep. It reminds me a lot of Dick Tracy.
- 21:35Speaker 3: No, I haven't seen that kind of time. But it's
- 21:37Speaker 3: very cartoonish. Cartoonish it very much is, and it's got
- 21:41Speaker 3: a lot of great people in it. Hoffman Pacino, Baby Madonna.
- 21:46Speaker 2: A cartoonish take on something that is not very cartoonish.
- 21:51Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, And I.
- 21:53Speaker 2: Think this is going to sound crazy, but like I
- 21:56Speaker 2: think you could probably put Sin City in this bucket
- 21:58Speaker 2: of movies as well, where it's like.
- 22:01Speaker 4: It's kind of got that vibe.
- 22:02Speaker 3: But yeah, it's crazy.
- 22:04Speaker 2: I know, since City obviously violent, not a lot of funny,
- 22:09Speaker 2: comedic moments, but there's something about it that.
- 22:14Speaker 3: I don't know, Like Aaron Taylor Johnson would be the
- 22:17Speaker 3: Mask now, Oh, that's how we would do it.
- 22:20Speaker 2: Hold on, let's that's how we would do it. Let's
- 22:22Speaker 2: let's work this reboot real quick.
- 22:25Speaker 3: It would be and it would be first of all,
- 22:26Speaker 3: it would take itself way too seriously, which the Mask
- 22:29Speaker 3: in nineties does not, which as it shouldn't. Yes, and
- 22:33Speaker 3: I think it makes it more digestible. But yeah, in
- 22:37Speaker 3: this day and age, it would be someone like that
- 22:40Speaker 3: or you know.
- 22:41Speaker 2: I could I could vibe with that though.
- 22:44Speaker 3: Well yeah, I mean, you know, he was pretty goofy
- 22:47Speaker 3: and craven.
- 22:48Speaker 4: So it feels like the Mask now would be more
- 22:50Speaker 4: like the Joker. Yeah, like that's what the final outcome
- 22:55Speaker 4: would be, something like the Mask I did not, thankfully.
- 22:59Speaker 3: I haven't either, but Jamie Kennedy did it.
- 23:01Speaker 2: I feel like we did go see that. I didn't
- 23:03Speaker 2: see it really, Yeah, So.
- 23:06Speaker 3: I don't know if that was like a pitiful date
- 23:09Speaker 3: you went on and you just thought you would it
- 23:10Speaker 3: be fun to see it.
- 23:11Speaker 2: Yeah, but I.
- 23:12Speaker 3: Actually have never sat and watched all the way through. Yeah,
- 23:16Speaker 3: And that says something because we would pretty much see
- 23:18Speaker 3: anything on opening weekend next summer.
- 23:21Speaker 4: Son of the Mask on I'm tracking with your vibe
- 23:24Speaker 4: about Since City because it feels like, yeah, there's the
- 23:28Speaker 4: city environments themselves, like it could almost be the same universe. Yeah,
- 23:33Speaker 4: they take place in.
- 23:34Speaker 3: Yeah, and I would love to see Marvin the Mask.
- 23:38Speaker 3: Marv kind of has the.
- 23:39Speaker 2: Mask one to be honest, but I think it's it's
- 23:44Speaker 2: part performance, but it's also the setting of these movies
- 23:49Speaker 2: kind of add to it, and I think it's something
- 23:52Speaker 2: that can I just say.
- 23:54Speaker 3: To your point, the way that it's done is almost
- 23:58Speaker 3: like this, like like especially when you get to Batman Forever,
- 24:02Speaker 3: like the city they're in, Yeah, it's not it doesn't
- 24:07Speaker 3: it's really not that real. And so then when it
- 24:10Speaker 3: says hey it's based on a comment, but you're like, oh, yeah, okay,
- 24:15Speaker 3: Like I see it now, I'm not sure if it
- 24:19Speaker 3: does it any favors or not, but it makes sense.
- 24:22Speaker 3: It's logical to that.
- 24:24Speaker 4: What is the name of the city, do you remember
- 24:26Speaker 4: it says it at the very beginning of the movie.
- 24:27Speaker 4: It's like Edge City Edge.
- 24:30Speaker 3: I think it's Pittsburgh.
- 24:32Speaker 4: But it makes a lot more sense now knowing that it's.
- 24:35Speaker 3: And that kind of yeah, that kind of atmosphere, that's true. Yeah.
- 24:39Speaker 2: So my point in bringing this up is that we
- 24:42Speaker 2: we've kind of hammered home this idea of nostalgia for
- 24:45Speaker 2: this film, and I think there is a part of
- 24:47Speaker 2: it that's like for us that were kids at the time,
- 24:50Speaker 2: it's Jim Carrey, it's physical comedy, it's silliness, the quote ability,
- 24:56Speaker 2: the one liners, all that stuff. But then I think
- 24:59Speaker 2: there's this common thread through movies like this where I
- 25:03Speaker 2: don't want to say it's like noir, but like there
- 25:07Speaker 2: there is some like old Hollywood, and then you.
- 25:11Speaker 3: You there's definitely inspirations of that.
- 25:14Speaker 2: You put like Cameron Diaz out there with bulging out
- 25:18Speaker 2: of her dress and all that, and I'm just I'm
- 25:20Speaker 2: picturing I'm picturing a line through generations where like the
- 25:25Speaker 2: dads are kind of in on this and.
- 25:27Speaker 3: They wish that actres would come in her hair. That's
- 25:32Speaker 3: what I wish.
- 25:33Speaker 2: Yes, well, they'd only have to wait a couple of years.
- 25:35Speaker 2: That's right. There's something about Mary. Yeah, if you didn't know,
- 25:39Speaker 2: that problem.
- 25:39Speaker 3: Is part of the scene. But isn't she famous for
- 25:44Speaker 3: I mean, come on, that's one of the most famous Cameron. Yeah.
- 25:47Speaker 2: Yeah, well we're also all like forty forty ish.
- 25:51Speaker 3: Yeah, no, I realized it's creepy.
- 25:53Speaker 2: I don't know, like we do numbers on YouTube, and
- 25:55Speaker 2: I just wonder, like, how many of those people are
- 25:58Speaker 2: are age with it?
- 25:59Speaker 3: That's right?
- 26:00Speaker 2: Yeah, are with it? That's right. So you know, I
- 26:03Speaker 2: kind of think going back to the nosalgia thing, like
- 26:07Speaker 2: I feel like this is gonna sound so weird to say,
- 26:10Speaker 2: but there is something in this movie for everyone in
- 26:15Speaker 2: a way because of you have the iconic performance from
- 26:20Speaker 2: Jim Carrey, but there is this sort of genre of
- 26:24Speaker 2: film that it feels like classic Hollywood. As stupid as
- 26:28Speaker 2: that feels to say out loud, well it is.
- 26:30Speaker 3: It is a time when things like that were being
- 26:35Speaker 3: made and it made money. I mean, don't oh, it
- 26:39Speaker 3: was a huge I was gonna say, let's not act
- 26:41Speaker 3: like the Mask didn't make money.
- 26:43Speaker 2: I got those figures, Candy.
- 26:45Speaker 3: I really think it is a how into Jim Carrey,
- 26:51Speaker 3: are you yea? And what he's able to do because
- 26:55Speaker 3: at this point with the Mask, it's new m you
- 26:59Speaker 3: haven't seen maybe besides the at you haven't seen that,
- 27:03Speaker 3: and be able to do something like that that is
- 27:06Speaker 3: cartoonish but also from a comic book, and also be
- 27:09Speaker 3: able to kind of really, you know, blow up on
- 27:16Speaker 3: some of these stories. And because when you're like, you know,
- 27:18Speaker 3: I mean honestly, you watch the movie and you're really
- 27:21Speaker 3: just waiting for him to put the mask on. I
- 27:22Speaker 3: mean that's really what it is. You know, Okay, I
- 27:26Speaker 3: broke my wrist, It's fine, and like, that's what it is.
- 27:31Speaker 3: And I appreciate that, But the excitement about the movie
- 27:37Speaker 3: overall it's like an hour forty minutes and it feels
- 27:41Speaker 3: longer than an hour forty minutes. Yeah, it's definitely Jim
- 27:45Speaker 3: Carrey being what we would consider the ultimate like Jim
- 27:49Speaker 3: Care experience. But that's really all they got. And in
- 27:55Speaker 3: this day and age, I think some could argue that
- 27:59Speaker 3: it's not enough. It's not quite enough.
- 28:01Speaker 4: Where does it fall in that list of ace Ventura
- 28:04Speaker 4: and like the timeline. Wise, yes, I was just about
- 28:07Speaker 4: to say, do you guys realize the Mask, Ace Ventura
- 28:12Speaker 4: and Dumb and Dumber were all nineteen ninety four. It
- 28:15Speaker 4: was all the same year in retrospect, I have heard
- 28:18Speaker 4: that before.
- 28:19Speaker 3: To me, the Mask is that is the third of
- 28:21Speaker 3: the of the three numbers should be.
- 28:24Speaker 2: The ninety five is Batman Forever where he plays the
- 28:27Speaker 2: Red Lars, so he's Ace Venturer when nature calls. So
- 28:30Speaker 2: the sequel ninety six is the Cable Guy, then Liar
- 28:34Speaker 2: Liar in ninety seven, and then we go to The
- 28:37Speaker 2: Truman Show and Simon Birch in nineteen ninety eight.
- 28:40Speaker 4: Was was the Mask first in ninety four?
- 28:44Speaker 2: That's a good question.
- 28:46Speaker 3: The reason I'm asking you, but I think I thought
- 28:48Speaker 3: it was.
- 28:49Speaker 2: The Mask was released July twenty ninth, nineteen ninety four.
- 28:56Speaker 2: Ace Ventura was February of that year. So the reason there.
- 29:00Speaker 4: Is I'm asking and this makes sense is I call
- 29:02Speaker 4: it a little bit of a spenture on TV recently,
- 29:05Speaker 4: and he does a lot of that, you know, the
- 29:08Speaker 4: those noises he's making and like the one like it's
- 29:12Speaker 4: a lot. So it feels like the success of the
- 29:15Speaker 4: Mask was set up, you're gonna love.
- 29:19Speaker 3: This too, and and honestly even on down the line, like.
- 29:24Speaker 4: Just broke your wrist, I'm the only risks.
- 29:28Speaker 3: I was gonna say no his earn just feel and
- 29:31Speaker 3: it was spilled my all over the book and it
- 29:36Speaker 3: was I love to me like he uses this like
- 29:42Speaker 3: you can. You can apply ace Ventury to the mask.
- 29:44Speaker 3: You can play the mask to liar liar, you can
- 29:46Speaker 3: apply liar liar to the rich. For me, I'm I'm
- 29:51Speaker 3: an a Sventur liar liar. And then the mask is
- 29:53Speaker 3: on down and I don't really know if it's I mean,
- 29:56Speaker 3: I feel like the story, its effects the overall thing,
- 30:02Speaker 3: because like liar liar is silly, but you know, a
- 30:04Speaker 3: father trying to get his son you don't want to lose,
- 30:07Speaker 3: you know, And there's different experiences you can apply it to.
- 30:10Speaker 3: The mask is very unique and distinct on exactly what
- 30:16Speaker 3: we're doing, and it's more of just like how crazy
- 30:22Speaker 3: can you get? But still try to line it with
- 30:25Speaker 3: like I have to get rid of it. And I
- 30:28Speaker 3: like this girl because I mean, Cameron Diaz isn't gonna
- 30:31Speaker 3: fuck Jim Carrey.
- 30:32Speaker 4: I mean that's not really we really went a place
- 30:35Speaker 4: with this.
- 30:36Speaker 3: But I will tell you the guy jumping in to
- 30:39Speaker 3: get the mask, I get it. He seems like the type.
- 30:41Speaker 2: Speaking of Cameron Diaz, I wanted.
- 30:45Speaker 3: To price well she had come in her hair.
- 30:47Speaker 2: I wanted to pull this quote from the critics consensus
- 30:50Speaker 2: on Rotten Tomatoes. Uh, says Cameron credits Cameron Diaz is
- 30:57Speaker 2: blousey appeal. Blousey? What is blouse me, gentlemen.
- 31:02Speaker 4: I I'll paraphrase. But on Rotten Tomatoes someone said that
- 31:07Speaker 4: her blousey appeal was its own character in the movie.
- 31:10Speaker 3: And is that like she shows too much?
- 31:15Speaker 4: It's just they put so much emphasis on that one.
- 31:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 31:20Speaker 3: Oh, she's eye candy. She's eye candy for sure, There's
- 31:23Speaker 3: no question about that. And thank god her career got better.
- 31:28Speaker 2: I was about to say, like, well, hold on.
- 31:32Speaker 3: Being John Malcovich and games in New York.
- 31:34Speaker 2: I'll give her that the Gangs of New York. This
- 31:37Speaker 2: is a rabbit hole. Quick aside. Here the most miscast
- 31:41Speaker 2: role in movie history of New York.
- 31:45Speaker 3: I don't really really, I'm not saying someone could have
- 31:49Speaker 3: done better. I don't mind it.
- 31:51Speaker 2: What did she go on to do?
- 31:53Speaker 3: I will tell you. Being John Malcovich and also a
- 31:56Speaker 3: movie that I think she she deserves more credit for
- 31:59Speaker 3: in her.
- 31:59Speaker 4: Shoe Charlie's Angels.
- 32:02Speaker 2: Okay, Charlie's Angels.
- 32:05Speaker 4: She's the single worst part of the holiday to me.
- 32:09Speaker 2: Oh, that might be a.
- 32:10Speaker 3: Take that I don't know if it's a hot I.
- 32:14Speaker 2: Love the holiday. That's one of my love of my favorites.
- 32:17Speaker 3: Well, now that I think about it, maybe I don't
- 32:19Speaker 3: like Cameron Diaz as much as the other three.
- 32:23Speaker 2: Yeah. I don't remember a lot of her other Oh
- 32:26Speaker 2: I forgot she had a cameo in Fear and Loathing.
- 32:28Speaker 3: Well that doesn't count.
- 32:29Speaker 2: There's something about Mary as nine that's.
- 32:31Speaker 3: One of her best That's that is one of her
- 32:33Speaker 3: best ones.
- 32:34Speaker 2: Any given Sunday I loved her. Just talked about that. Wait,
- 32:40Speaker 2: I'm getting no, we're gonna talk about that. Yeah, three months,
- 32:43Speaker 2: we're going to talk about any given Sunday. Shrek. I
- 32:47Speaker 2: never saw Vanilla Sky.
- 32:49Speaker 3: She's fine in it. I remember thinking Tommy Cruise and
- 32:52Speaker 3: Penelope Cruise.
- 32:53Speaker 4: Shrek is probably one. I mean, not that she makes Shrek,
- 32:57Speaker 4: but her consistent presence al Shrek is probably to get
- 33:01Speaker 4: enough credit for.
- 33:03Speaker 3: I think we remember Mike Myers and Nadie Murphy.
- 33:05Speaker 2: That's right. I swear I thought I saw her in
- 33:08Speaker 2: something recently that I was like, oh, wow, this is
- 33:10Speaker 2: really good.
- 33:11Speaker 3: I really but she's great and being John Malkovich. I
- 33:14Speaker 3: don't want anybody to think, and I actually don't. She's
- 33:16Speaker 3: badden any given Sunday and Gangs of New York. But
- 33:20Speaker 3: there's a lot that she's in that is very much
- 33:23Speaker 3: of like, what's the one someone liked with her? And
- 33:26Speaker 3: Leslie Mann and someone else it was like they all
- 33:30Speaker 3: dated the same man or something the other woman maybe yes, right,
- 33:35Speaker 3: And then now she's made a comeback and they're like, oh,
- 33:37Speaker 3: she's out a retirement. You know what she did? She
- 33:38Speaker 3: did an action Netflix movie Jamie Foxx. I was about
- 33:41Speaker 3: to say, is that no one remembers. And she did
- 33:44Speaker 3: an Apple TV movie that Jonah Hill directed that has
- 33:46Speaker 3: kind of reeves in it, and I don't think anybody's
- 33:50Speaker 3: gonna remember that either.
- 33:51Speaker 2: It's a bummer for Jim Carrey didn't do.
- 33:55Speaker 3: But I understand people still love Night and Day, So
- 33:58Speaker 3: take that for what it's worth.
- 33:59Speaker 2: Is that right?
- 34:00Speaker 3: That's what people say.
- 34:01Speaker 4: I never saw a Night and Day, me neither, but
- 34:03Speaker 4: I have I have heard people say it's good.
- 34:05Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean it's not bad at all. Tom Cruising
- 34:09Speaker 3: starts his scientology.
- 34:10Speaker 4: In it, and Tom Cruise is in it.
- 34:11Speaker 3: That's why it's exactly exactly enough said.
- 34:15Speaker 2: All right, So where were we on the Mask?
- 34:19Speaker 3: Thank God for Jim Carrey's where we're at on the Mask?
- 34:22Speaker 2: I jotted down not to get too not to get
- 34:26Speaker 2: too deep about this movie, but I do think there
- 34:28Speaker 2: is a theme about the masks that we wear throughout society,
- 34:35Speaker 2: and how if we were to release our inhibitions a
- 34:39Speaker 2: little bit, we would kind of become something different from
- 34:42Speaker 2: what we present to society.
- 34:44Speaker 3: Yes, and I think that's more apparent during the first
- 34:48Speaker 3: part of The Mask. But him and is whatever that
- 34:51Speaker 3: guy whoever's buddy guy is, you know, like the ones
- 34:54Speaker 3: that horn dog and the chance of it. And I
- 34:56Speaker 3: think a lot of people can relate to that, And
- 35:00Speaker 3: so what persona do you take on to be that
- 35:06Speaker 3: kind of guy? But also and I even like like
- 35:08Speaker 3: when the villain takes it on, it's different, It's it
- 35:12Speaker 3: doesn't work the same way. It still relies on the
- 35:14Speaker 3: person you are inside, Like I mean, there is some
- 35:18Speaker 3: there is some rather like okay, you can recognize what
- 35:24Speaker 3: what that means and the person that you are, the
- 35:27Speaker 3: person you can be, and and if you use it
- 35:30Speaker 3: for good or bad or whatever.
- 35:31Speaker 4: But they you know, and they infuse some of that
- 35:34Speaker 4: with the Ben Sein character too.
- 35:36Speaker 3: Yes, yeah, when he goes to yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 35:38Speaker 4: While you're talking about the mask changing depending on who
- 35:41Speaker 4: puts it on. Going back to ten year old boys,
- 35:44Speaker 4: the dog putting on the mask is like Jordan dunking
- 35:48Speaker 4: from the freeze, Like, yeah, it doesn't get better than that.
- 35:52Speaker 2: You're like, it's good, he's going to do it. He's good.
- 35:55Speaker 3: Yeah, it doesn't. Like but you know what the thing is,
- 35:57Speaker 3: it doesn't last as long as I remember. Yeah, yeah,
- 36:00Speaker 3: it's a lot quicker than I thought it was. And
- 36:02Speaker 3: the villain taking on I'm just like, okay, that's a
- 36:06Speaker 3: like I didn't know it at the time, but like
- 36:08Speaker 3: that's Elum Musk. I guess I didn't know him at
- 36:12Speaker 3: the time, But that's that seems.
- 36:13Speaker 4: Like it was actually commentary.
- 36:15Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, yeah, so, but I think in the end
- 36:20Speaker 3: it's very much a showcase for the Jim Carrey that
- 36:24Speaker 3: people fell in love with. I think that's really what
- 36:26Speaker 3: it what it comes down to.
- 36:27Speaker 2: It is interesting to look at this film as a
- 36:29Speaker 2: sort of moment in time, and you look at that
- 36:32Speaker 2: year where it was ace Ventura in February, the Mask
- 36:37Speaker 2: that summer, and then Dumb and Dumber on December sixteenth,
- 36:41Speaker 2: which imagine taking taking your family to see Dumb Dummer
- 36:45Speaker 2: on Christmas for the first.
- 36:46Speaker 4: Time may be too light a sentiment for.
- 36:49Speaker 3: That, Yeah, saw, Yeah, I think so. I think this
- 36:52Speaker 3: is the whole damn Stone Cold run.
- 36:54Speaker 4: Yeah, that's insane.
- 36:55Speaker 2: This is the Attitude area. Yeah, this is the Attitude era. Yeah.
- 37:00Speaker 2: But it is really interesting to look back at this
- 37:02Speaker 2: as a sort of moment in time where we I mean,
- 37:07Speaker 2: obviously we were too young to understand like, oh, career
- 37:11Speaker 2: trajectory and like what this is doing for Jim Carey.
- 37:14Speaker 2: But it really was one of those films that and
- 37:18Speaker 2: I'm with you, Brandon. Like the story I don't think
- 37:22Speaker 2: is very very diverse. I feel like it's very cookie cutter,
- 37:27Speaker 2: comic book movie. I do like the opening scene where
- 37:29Speaker 2: they show you it's almost like this mythical where they
- 37:33Speaker 2: discover the mask and it comes loose and all that.
- 37:36Speaker 2: But for the most part, I do feel like the
- 37:38Speaker 2: story is very by the book and this movie excels
- 37:42Speaker 2: in how Jim Carey accentuates the character. But it is
- 37:46Speaker 2: kind of interesting to look back, and I use the
- 37:49Speaker 2: term cultural zeitgeist earlier. It's like this for a certain generation,
- 37:54Speaker 2: this movie was so big that it set the foundation
- 37:59Speaker 2: for or Carrie's career and what he would do throughout
- 38:03Speaker 2: the rest of the nineties. Not this film in particular.
- 38:05Speaker 2: I just mean that ninety four season if you will,
- 38:09Speaker 2: I mean you talk about like the Brady fifty touchdown season,
- 38:14Speaker 2: stuff like that is like Jim Carrey's ninety four where
- 38:18Speaker 2: he became a star. Yeah.
- 38:19Speaker 3: Well, the thing is, you ask anybody today, Dumb and
- 38:24Speaker 3: Dumber is the one they remember. It is for me,
- 38:27Speaker 3: is like what even if you were like of a
- 38:29Speaker 3: certain age or like, what's your favorite in Dumb and Dumbers? There?
- 38:33Speaker 3: So it just goes to show you that none of
- 38:35Speaker 3: these were misfires per se. But Yeah, and some of
- 38:39Speaker 3: his best work is actually to Come and Dumb and Dumber,
- 38:44Speaker 3: I think is a very very iconic classic comedy that
- 38:49Speaker 3: you can't him and Jeff It just doesn't get any better. Yeah,
- 38:52Speaker 3: the Mask actually did all three of those. That's a
- 38:55Speaker 3: good that's a good little run.
- 38:56Speaker 2: Yeah, the Mask had an estimated budget of somewhere between
- 38:59Speaker 2: a team to twenty three million.
- 39:01Speaker 3: It's pretty good.
- 39:02Speaker 2: It's box office run worldwide. Everything included three hundred and
- 39:07Speaker 2: fifty one point eight million in the nineties. In the nineties,
- 39:10Speaker 2: Insane Star and we talked a little bit earlier like
- 39:14Speaker 2: this was kind of a critical hit, Like critics did not.
- 39:16Speaker 3: Hate this movie. Yeah. I think that's it too, is
- 39:19Speaker 3: that it was not like, you know, a thirty percent
- 39:23Speaker 3: rotten and then people, you know, I mean it.
- 39:25Speaker 2: Was I was reading through some of my notes on
- 39:29Speaker 2: this film and like researching what I wanted to put
- 39:32Speaker 2: in the show. Like there were a couple of critics,
- 39:36Speaker 2: one being from the Knoxville New Sentinel, by the way,
- 39:39Speaker 2: that had The Mask in their honorable mentions for the
- 39:43Speaker 2: best Pictures of the year in ninety four.
- 39:45Speaker 3: Wow, and I just told you guys, is a bit crazy.
- 39:48Speaker 2: Based on the Tomato Meter, the twenty ninth highest ranked
- 39:51Speaker 2: film of nineteen ninety Yeah, can.
- 39:52Speaker 3: Sider how many movies came out that's that's pretty good.
- 39:55Speaker 3: And considering the kind of movie it is, I don't
- 39:58Speaker 3: think a lot of people would expect fat So what.
- 40:01Speaker 2: Did I eighty one percent on you.
- 40:04Speaker 3: Said sixty something for the peasants, I mean audience.
- 40:08Speaker 2: For the audience. Yeah, the mask had eighty one percent.
- 40:12Speaker 2: The Shawshank redemption has eighty nine percent. Well, that's that's
- 40:17Speaker 2: so surprising to me. Is so surprising to me.
- 40:21Speaker 3: Yeah, that skill is that's a little different.
- 40:26Speaker 2: Do Do you guys have a favorite quote from this movie?
- 40:30Speaker 2: There were a couple for me that came to mind
- 40:32Speaker 2: right away because I remembered Brandon saying them when we
- 40:36Speaker 2: were look ma on roadkill and that's a spicy meat
- 40:41Speaker 2: the ball. I remember that one.
- 40:43Speaker 3: And the smoke and I remember those. It's not a
- 40:47Speaker 3: bunch of quote, but I I always remember the Chaka
- 40:53Speaker 3: the Morocco. I remember that whole sequence, and when I
- 40:57Speaker 3: saw it, it was as clear as day to me.
- 41:00Speaker 3: And it's something that in that time and that kind
- 41:04Speaker 3: of comedic performance that honestly, Jim Carrey can get away
- 41:09Speaker 3: with anything. It really didn't matter. Man.
- 41:12Speaker 2: Yeah, it did feel and.
- 41:14Speaker 3: I definitely feel like that movie let him yeah and
- 41:18Speaker 3: we knew.
- 41:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 41:19Speaker 4: I think my favorite one is P A R. T
- 41:22Speaker 4: Y because I gotta as a ten year old, that's
- 41:26Speaker 4: like legit, that's like, that's right, poetic, like come up
- 41:33Speaker 4: with that.
- 41:35Speaker 2: Yeah, who let the dogs out?
- 41:37Speaker 3: Kind of ship?
- 41:37Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 41:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I feel like every once in a while this
- 41:43Speaker 2: podcast calls for an impression. We've We've done it for
- 41:49Speaker 2: the female orgasm, yes, and horror when Harry met Sally.
- 41:54Speaker 2: We've done impressions of Black Philip from the Witches. Does
- 42:00Speaker 2: anybody want to take a stab at the mask?
- 42:05Speaker 3: Oh? I don't you go on kids smoking?
- 42:11Speaker 2: No, that was too I've had too much to drink.
- 42:13Speaker 2: I can't pull it all.
- 42:14Speaker 3: I actually started looking sh.
- 42:17Speaker 2: Sh all right, we're not going to do that.
- 42:22Speaker 3: Then let's end on that.
- 42:25Speaker 2: You don't want to try and recreate ten year old Brandon.
- 42:29Speaker 3: I don't remember ship that I should.
- 42:31Speaker 2: Look my roadkill.
- 42:32Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't.
- 42:33Speaker 2: That was not my mask impression. That was my impression.
- 42:36Speaker 3: That was me me doing it.
- 42:39Speaker 2: All right, we'll try again for twelve angry men.
- 42:42Speaker 3: Yeah, I got a good one for that one.
- 42:44Speaker 2: Do impressions that? Uh, that's all the notes that I
- 42:47Speaker 2: have on nineteen ninety four.
- 42:51Speaker 3: Before you wrap it up, were you surprised how easy
- 42:53Speaker 3: it was when Cameron Diaz went to the bank to
- 42:56Speaker 3: ask for some money.
- 42:57Speaker 2: Well, and did you see.
- 43:01Speaker 3: Well the blowsiness was was popping, and I thought maybe
- 43:05Speaker 3: I should, like, maybe.
- 43:07Speaker 2: I should try that.
- 43:09Speaker 3: Yeah, go to regions with my balls hanging out.
- 43:13Speaker 2: I was about to say, say, hey, hey, hey, hey,
- 43:16Speaker 2: make sure that them things think, hey.
- 43:18Speaker 3: Hey hey, look look what's happening.
- 43:21Speaker 2: Just braced. I don't know, do you have honest with you?
- 43:27Speaker 3: I just imagine wearing like a Rick Flair shirt and
- 43:30Speaker 3: a black thumb and my balls hanging out and thinking
- 43:32Speaker 3: some man is gonna give me a little bit.
- 43:35Speaker 2: It's not that impression of that. On. Hold on, we've
- 43:37Speaker 2: got to we've got to hash this out. Your balls
- 43:39Speaker 2: can't just be hanging out. They can They got.
- 43:45Speaker 3: Things like no not to school, what no stop in
- 43:48Speaker 3: Gladeville that I think it could.
- 43:51Speaker 2: They've got to be supported like they're wearing like they're
- 43:54Speaker 2: in a brawl. Yeah, okay, you've got to make them.
- 43:56Speaker 3: You've got to push them up, because I thought.
- 43:59Speaker 2: So maybe we just uh tuck them in your waistband
- 44:04Speaker 2: and they're just they're pushed up a little.
- 44:05Speaker 3: Bit and like my dinosaur overalls.
- 44:10Speaker 4: Well would you also be filming the bank with your
- 44:13Speaker 4: purse so that you could come back and rob it?
- 44:16Speaker 3: Yeah? Okay, absolutely, all right, Well I get that I
- 44:20Speaker 3: would get that guy who told me no, and I
- 44:23Speaker 3: would show back up like an Aaron BROCKOVICI character. Okay,
- 44:27Speaker 3: I say, oh guess what, Dale, I.
- 44:30Speaker 2: Feel like we've checked all the boxes on this episode. Brett.
- 44:35Speaker 2: Any putting thoughts on the mass, I'm okay, there you

- 44:50Speaker 4: came from I scroed him. Don't you dare take credit
- 44:52Speaker 4: for it? Actually scared me?
- 44:54Speaker 3: That was Would you like to do like any gym
- 44:56Speaker 3: carry impression?
- 44:57Speaker 4: Yeah? Sure, somebody stopped me.
- 45:00Speaker 2: Oh oh nice?
- 45:02Speaker 3: It was from NPR. Think it fantastic?
- 45:06Speaker 2: All right, Brett, you didn't get your final thoughts out
- 45:10Speaker 2: because Brandon, you.
- 45:11Speaker 4: Know, I'm gonna be honest. My adrenaline is going after
- 45:14Speaker 4: I got scared by that, so I don't have anything.
- 45:16Speaker 2: Else, Brandon, Are you okay? Any parting thoughts on the mask?
- 45:25Speaker 1: No?
- 45:25Speaker 3: I I understand people's love for it that it is
- 45:30Speaker 3: still back then it wasn't and it's still not one
- 45:33Speaker 3: of my favorite Jim Carrey movies. But if someone said, hey,
- 45:40Speaker 3: name a movie that utilized what Jim Carrey could do
- 45:42Speaker 3: back then. I think they got every penny's worth.
