- 0:41And here I am in your ear, in your laptop, in your lounge
- 0:45room, in the car, and we get to read another chapter of the
- 0:49Bible together and continuing reading through Isaiah.
- 0:54God has been pretty cranky with Judah because he knows what they
- 1:00are doing and he knows what they are going to do.
- 1:04And today God shares his crankiness with other nations.
- 1:09Empire building was not a pretty process back then, which is why
- 1:13God kept on saying to his people, I want you to be
- 1:15different. And the Assyrians, oh, God's not
- 1:18happy with the Assyrians. So today we hear God speak
- 1:21against this enormous empire surging southward through Israel
- 1:28toward Judah. So let's hear what God has to
- 1:31say as we read together. Isaiah, chapter 10.
- 1:45What sorrow awaits the unjust judges and those who issue
- 1:49unfair laws? They deprive the poor of justice
- 1:53and deny the rights of needy among my people.
- 1:56They prey on widows and take advantage of orphans.
- 2:00What will you do when I punish you?
- 2:02When I send disaster upon you from a distant land?
- 2:06To whom will you turn for help? Where will your treasures be
- 2:09safe? You will stumble along as
- 2:12prisoners or lie among the dead. But even then the Lord's anger
- 2:17will not be satisfied. His fist is still poised to
- 2:21strike. What sorrow awaits Assyria?
- 2:27The rod of my anger? I use it as a club to express my
- 2:31anger. I am sending Assyria against the
- 2:35godless nation, against the people with whom I am angry.
- 2:39Assyria will plunder them, trampling them like dirt beneath
- 2:43its feet. But the king of Assyria will not
- 2:46understand that he is my tool. His mind does not work that way.
- 2:51His plan is simply to destroy, to cut down nation after nation,
- 2:56he will say. Each of my Princess will soon be
- 3:00a king. We destroyed Kalno just as we
- 3:03did Kachemish Hammeth fell before us as our pad did.
- 3:09And we destroyed Samaria just as we did Damascus.
- 3:13Yes, we have finished off many a Kingdom whose gods were greater
- 3:18than those in Jerusalem and Samaria.
- 3:21So we will defeat Jerusalem and her gods, just as we destroyed
- 3:25Samaria with hers. After the Lord has used the king
- 3:30of Assyria to accomplish his purpose on Mount Zion and in
- 3:33Jerusalem, he will turn against the king of Assyria and punish
- 3:37him, for he is proud and arrogant, he boasts by my own
- 3:43powerful arm. I have done this with my own
- 3:46shrewd wisdom. I planned it.
- 3:49I've broken down the defenses of nations and carried off their
- 3:52treasures. I have knocked down their kings
- 3:55like a bull. I have robbed their nests of
- 3:58riches and gathered up kingdoms as a farmer gathers eggs.
- 4:02No one can even flap a wing against me, or utter a peep of
- 4:06protest. But can the axe boast greater
- 4:11power than the person who uses it?
- 4:13Is the saw gracer than the person who soars?
- 4:16Can a rod strike unless a hand moves it?
- 4:19Can a wooden cane walk by itself?
- 4:22Therefore, the Lord, the Lord of Heaven's armies, will send a
- 4:26plague among Assyria's proud troops, and a flaming fire will
- 4:30consume its glory. The Lord, the light of Israel,
- 4:34will be a fire. The Holy One will be a flame.
- 4:38He will devour the thorns and briars with fire, burning up the
- 4:42enemy in a single night. The Lord will consume A Syria's
- 4:46glory like a fire consumes a forest in a fruitful land.
- 4:51It will waste away like sick people in a plague.
- 4:55Of all that glorious forest, only a few trees will survive,
- 5:00so few that a child could count them in that day.
- 5:05The remnant left in Israel. The survivors in the House of
- 5:09Jacob will no longer depend on allies who seek to destroy them,
- 5:14but they will faithfully trust the Lord, the Holy One of
- 5:18Israel. A remnant will return.
- 5:22Yes, the remnant of Jacob will return to the mighty God.
- 5:27But though the people of Israel are as numerous as the sand of
- 5:31the seashore, only a remnant of them will return.
- 5:35The Lord has rightly decided to destroy his people.
- 5:38Yes, the Lord, the Lord of Heaven's armies, has already
- 5:43decided to destroy the entire land.
- 5:46So this is what the Lord, the Lord of Heaven's army says.
- 5:51All my people in Zion. Do not be afraid of the
- 5:54Assyrians when they oppressed you with rod and club, as the
- 5:58Egyptians did long ago. In a little while my anger
- 6:02against you will end, and then my anger will rise up to destroy
- 6:06them. The Lord of Heaven's armies will
- 6:09lash them with his whip, as he did when Gideon triumphed over
- 6:13the Midianites at the Rock of Orab, or when the Lord's staff
- 6:18was raised to drown the Egyptian army in the sea.
- 6:22In that day the Lord will end the bondage of his people.
- 6:26He will break the yoke of slavery and lift it from their
- 6:28shoulders. Look, the Assyrians are now at
- 6:33Ayath. They are passing through Migron
- 6:36and are storing their equipment at Mikmash.
- 6:40They are crossing the pass and are camping at Gabba.
- 6:43Fear strikes the town of Rama. All the people of Gibya, the
- 6:48hometown of Seoul, are running for their lives.
- 6:51Scream in terror. You people of Gallum, shout out
- 6:55a warning. Talaysia all poor Anathov.
- 7:00There go the people of Madmina, all fleeing.
- 7:04The citizens of Gabin are trying to hide.
- 7:07The enemy stops at Nob for the rest of the day.
- 7:11He shakes his fist at beautiful Mount Zion, the mountain of
- 7:15Jerusalem. But look, the Lord, the Lord of
- 7:19Heaven's armies, will chop down the mighty tree of Assyria with
- 7:23great power. He will cut down the proud.
- 7:26That lofty tree will be brought down.
- 7:29He will cut down the forest trees with an axe.
- 7:32Lebanon will fall to the mighty. 10 God, you are not impressed by
- 7:48earthly power. You are not impressed by those
- 7:52who flex and strut, and feel more important than all the
- 7:59others. You have a heart for the
- 8:03downtrodden, for the oppressed, for those whose voice gets
- 8:07drowned out in the dim. Lord, shape our outlook.
- 8:12Give us your lens through which we too cannot be impressed by
- 8:18those who strut with giant egos, but that we can see past that to
- 8:23where the true need is, and that we can be attentive and kind and
- 8:27generous where we need to thank you that you are a God of
- 8:31justice and a God of hope and a God of redemption.
- 8:36Thank you that you redeem us even when we don't deserve it,
- 8:40and only do you redeem us. But you call us your children,
- 8:45and then you invite us to partner in your work of growing
- 8:48your Kingdom. We love you, and we're so
- 8:52grateful for all that you've done for us and all that you
- 8:56are. And we pray this in the name of
- 8:58Jesus. Amen.
