Transcript
- 0:00Jon: this week on Xenomania.
- 0:02Join us as we travel to Woodsboro, where we catch up with our old friend
- 0:07Ghost face and his newest round of victims, and find out how we feel about
- 0:13a satire becoming the thing that it satirizes and how much we enjoyed some
- 0:20of the performances in Scream five.
- 0:23This is Xenomania.
- 0:42There too.
- 0:42Ryan: Oh,
- 0:43Jon: that's the game in my top five are like almost two pages themselves.
- 0:49Ryan: that's,
- 0:50Kearns: are ridiculous.
- 0:51Ryan: that's acceptable.
- 0:52Kearns: Yeah, that's different.
- 0:53Ryan: That's acceptable.
- 0:54Jon: my, my notes are just like, stream of consciousness.
- 0:57Remind me of what happened.
- 1:00Blow by below.
- 1:01Ryan: but the, the thing is, is it's basically a rel right?
- 1:05It's a remake.
- 1:06Sequel.
- 1:06The combination of the legacy character, something that they've in
- 1:10Hollywood have been doing with horror films, Halloween, Texas Chainsaw.
- 1:14So you knew Scream was gonna jump on the bandwagon,
- 1:17especially after the fourth one.
- 1:19Jon: Yeah.
- 1:20Kearns: Just pulling in all that money.
- 1:22Ryan: Yeah,
- 1:22Kearns: Just wanna
- 1:23Ryan: absolutely.
- 1:23Kearns: that yummy scream money.
- 1:26Jon: yeah, I mean.
- 1:28To quote Nie g paraphrase him and his, you know, beware if you chase
- 1:33monsters of becoming the monster.
- 1:36beware when satirizing, slasher movies that you don't
- 1:39become what you're satirizing
- 1:42Ryan: Yeah,
- 1:43Jon: the Scream franchise became that really quick anyway.
- 1:48Ryan: I feel like it became like that for three because like
- 1:51it was a little more comedy.
- 1:53You have the Jay and Silent Bob Cameo, which was a favor from West Craven.
- 1:57So Kevin Smith, because I think Kevin Smith did something for West Craven.
- 2:01Um, I mean you got all that and then the fourth one tries
- 2:06to go serious, but it's, uh.
- 2:08Jon: if, if you're satirizing slashers, you've already become
- 2:13the satire when you go to part two.
- 2:18Kearns: Yeah.
- 2:19Jon: Because I mean that's part of the whole like slasher trope is that, oh,
- 2:24here's part one, now it's part two.
- 2:26And like they say with a higher body count, like so
- 2:31Ryan: Fair.
- 2:32Jon: safe.
- 2:32And so you, they very quickly becomes that.
- 2:37It doesn't diminish that scream.
- 2:38Two is a good slasher,
- 2:42Ryan: Thank you.
- 2:42Jon: but then three and four kind of, eh, I understand there's some
- 2:46Ryan: Yes.
- 2:47Jon: for four because of Wes Craven and whatever,
- 2:51Ryan: Yeah.
- 2:52Jon: it's
- 2:53Ryan: It's his last film.
- 2:54It was his last film, and they got Kevin Williams sent back.
- 2:58Kearns: What a stinker to go out on.
- 2:59Am I right
- 2:59Ryan: Well,
- 3:00Kearns: out there?
- 3:01Ryan: I
- 3:01Jon: mean it's,
- 3:02Ryan: 50 50.
- 3:03Jon: could have gone out on better.
- 3:06Kearns: Oh, greed.
- 3:08You got muted while you were trying to defend Screen four Descrip.
- 3:11The
- 3:11Ryan: Exactly
- 3:12Kearns: software muted you.
- 3:14Ryan: that was the universe saying,
- 3:15Kearns: our disco lights here.
- 3:17Ryan: it's the universe saying, do not.
- 3:19I don't think the fourth one is bad.
- 3:21I feel like over time it's gotten better, but the fifth one
- 3:24does blow it out of the water.
- 3:26Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 3:26Well, yeah.
- 3:28Ryan: like especially, sorry, with the beginning.
- 3:30I mean, the beginning is the same thing we've seen in every screen movie, but they
- 3:34flip it, not because Jenna Ortega's in it.
- 3:37It's more brutal and it's modern.
- 3:39You know, they're using texting, they're using cell phones, you know, I
- 3:43mean, in the opening she hangs up the phone, you're expecting her to answer,
- 3:47and she's like, Nope, not doing it.
- 3:49Unknown number.
- 3:50And it's like, all right, Tara, who, Jenna, or take
- 3:53place is making the right move.
- 3:54And then it goes orry quickly because she thinks that's her.
- 3:59Knew her mom's new boyfriend from some meeting, which she goes along
- 4:05with it knowing that it's all BS anyway, which was her first mistake.
- 4:10I would say that in that scene,
- 4:11Jon: yeah, I mean the first scene works like the Scream five.
- 4:15I'm just gonna give you a little spoiler of how I feel about it.
- 4:17Scream Five worked for me.
- 4:18Mostly.
- 4:19Mostly.
- 4:22There's
- 4:22Ryan: fist bump.
- 4:23Jon: one part I'm sure we're gonna get to.
- 4:25That pisses me off to no end because it, we, we have talked about movies deserving
- 4:33to do something like deserving to kill an animal, deserving to kill a child, like
- 4:38they earned that capital with an audience.
- 4:42Scream Five does not earn what it does.
- 4:44Ryan: Are you talking about Officer Goofy?
- 4:46Jon: I'm talking about Dewey
- 4:48Ryan: Oh.
- 4:49Jon: did not earn that death.
- 4:52Ryan: N
- 4:52Kearns: He's, he's, it's, it's sank a saint.
- 4:55Ryan: Would you,
- 4:56Kearns: most beloved characters of the franchise.
- 4:59Ryan: would you have taken Gail Weathers over that?
- 5:01Kearns: I would've taken anybody over that.
- 5:02I would've
- 5:03Ryan: Not Cindy.
- 5:03Kearns: Mother Teresa over that.
- 5:05Jon: if you are going to bring back Legacy cast members, you either
- 5:10cameo them or you can't kill 'em all.
- 5:12How can you, say you're honoring Craven and Williamson and Hill off of the most
- 5:19popular characters in the franchise
- 5:22Ryan: It's, it's a chance, right?
- 5:24It's a chance they took.
- 5:26Jon: really because he's being an idiot.
- 5:29Ryan: Yeah.
- 5:30Kearns: of his thing.
- 5:31Ryan: Uh,
- 5:31Jon: Like he,
- 5:32Ryan: yes.
- 5:33Jon: safely in the elevator.
- 5:36And it, while it doesn't come into play in that moment, he's been around enough
- 5:41to know that there are two Ghostface.
- 5:44'cause there's always two of them.
- 5:47So he doesn't even know that going back in, he's not running into the second one.
- 5:54Ryan: True.
- 5:55Jon: like, nah, he, he dies being stupid.
- 5:58And it's not a death that Scream five earned.
- 6:01Ryan: So you don't think he like kind of gave up on life at that point?
- 6:05'cause like you see him, when we first get, reintroduce it, Dewey, like, he's
- 6:09all like depressed and stuff and he's trying to keep that positivity up.
- 6:13But like, you know how I interpret it, you know.
- 6:18Jon: No, I, I think he's rejuvenated.
- 6:20Like he doesn't want to be, involved in another Ghostface situation, but like,
- 6:27he's rejuvenated by it almost immediately.
- 6:30He, like, he kicks, Sam outta the house and like, I, I'm not doing it.
- 6:35I'm not doing, I'm not gonna help.
- 6:37And he texts Sidney and he texts ga or he calls Sidney and he texts Gail.
- 6:43And, but you can see in those moments, it's like, oh, wait
- 6:48a minute, this is my purpose.
- 6:49Hunting Ghostface is my purpose.
- 6:53And
- 6:53Kearns: Hmm.
- 6:54Jon: back.
- 6:54Like, I think this rejuvenates him.
- 6:56I don't think he had to kill him.
- 7:00Ryan: I do agree.
- 7:00It's like killing Reggie in Phantasm.
- 7:02You just can't do it.
- 7:03Jon: Yeah.
- 7:05would ha,
- 7:05Kearns: I think what
- 7:06Jon: I
- 7:07Kearns: I think what,
- 7:07Jon: reaction.
- 7:09Kearns: well, that's a, that's a totally, I almost feel like a
- 7:11totally different conversation.
- 7:13But I think what the problem is with me with regard to the franchisees,
- 7:16what would kill Reggie and Phantasm, we know the tall man would kill Reggie and
- 7:23Ryan: Or women
- 7:24Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 7:24Kearns: women being cosplayed or tall man, cosplaying as women,
- 7:28Jon: Yeah.
- 7:29Kearns: but tall man would kill Reggie and scream Ghostface isn't the same person.
- 7:34So there's like, there's like varying levels of cred with regard to whoever
- 7:38is Ghostface in whichever movie addition we're seeing, like whichever number.
- 7:43So the two twits that are ghostface to get, to get the stupid stab, credibility
- 7:51up or whatever the heck the excuse was.
- 7:52I, I don't even remember it.
- 7:53So stupid.
- 7:54That's what kills Dewey.
- 7:57Jon: mm-hmm.
- 7:58Kearns: I dunno.
- 7:59It makes me mad.
- 7:59Jon: their motive is that the Stab franchise stopped being slashers and
- 8:04became elevated horror, and now they want to give it a story to bring
- 8:09it back to its true slasher roots,
- 8:12Kearns: Mm. And
- 8:14Ryan: And they,
- 8:15Kearns: shall
- 8:16Ryan: and they do,
- 8:16Jon: mean, look, I, I get the elevated horror stuff.
- 8:19I hate that phrase.
- 8:21Kearns: mm-hmm.
- 8:22Jon: It's not horror.
- 8:23It like, we added some thrilling moments and some character development to call it
- 8:29elevated horror, but it's a horror movie.
- 8:32The Witch is a horror movie, not elevated horror.
- 8:34It's just a horror movie.
- 8:35Ryan: I mean, they mentioned the Baba Duke, they mentioned hereditary films.
- 8:39So I feel like that have more of a high, like we're saying, high elevated thrill
- 8:44Kearns: they're
- 8:44Ryan: it.
- 8:45Kearns: on the type of horror movies I like.
- 8:48Ryan: Wow.
- 8:48Yeah.
- 8:49I don't agree with them.
- 8:50Kearns: ones.
- 8:51I like the um, I like, oh yeah, I know you don't, you like, you like, well,
- 8:55your net is way bigger than mine.
- 8:56You like a lot of different things.
- 8:58You're a huge fan of Slashers.
- 8:59Big fan of really bad body horror.
- 9:01Like bring her back.
- 9:02Um.
- 9:03Ryan: Necrophilia, whatever that movie is.
- 9:05Kearns: what you do on Saturday.
- 9:11Ryan: Gotta delete those files.
- 9:12Kearns: why I always defer to you guys.
- 9:14I, I mean, I will say, I, I defer to John usually first because you're
- 9:18like, you're like at the vault John and
- 9:21Ryan: Yes,
- 9:21Kearns: behind him.
- 9:22Like, you guys just know everything.
- 9:24But you, you really do enjoy such a wide swath.
- 9:27When I see movies like this, it's like fun time.
- 9:29It's the ball pit at Burger King.
- 9:31It's, not a lot to it.
- 9:33You roll around, you get germs.
- 9:34You're having a great time.
- 9:35this one was better than the other screen movies.
- 9:37'cause I remember the screen movies really starting to suck.
- 9:40I'm assuming four was the last one I saw before five, which was, but
- 9:45it was like a million years ago.
- 9:47Jon: Yeah,
- 9:48Ryan: 2000.
- 9:48Kearns: I, yeah, I mean that was like 12 crises national crises ago.
- 9:54Who knows when?
- 9:55I didn't even know how old I was.
- 9:56I could have been in preschool or I could have been 27.
- 9:58I don't even know anymore.
- 9:59Jon: I mean, listen, I, I feel
- 10:01Kearns: You don't have to do the math.
- 10:02I know how old that was, Ryan.
- 10:04Jon: it's been like 12 national crises since the last time
- 10:07we recorded an episode.
- 10:09Kearns: Yeah, fair
- 10:10Ryan: Yeah, true.
- 10:11Kearns: portfolio looking?
- 10:13Tax returns looking good.
- 10:14Mine's not
- 10:15Ryan: I didn't even,
- 10:16Kearns: There's
- 10:17Ryan: I haven't jumped,
- 10:18Kearns: Yeah,
- 10:18Ryan: oil went up.
- 10:20Kearns: Usually it's a four, four digit green number this year.
- 10:22It's a four digit gray number.
- 10:25Things are great.
- 10:26We're doing fine.
- 10:28Jon: Yeah,
- 10:28Kearns: fine.
- 10:29Ryan: oil bill.
- 10:30Jon: can write off my movie purchasing.
- 10:32Kearns: Um, probably not based on what I, shenanigans.
- 10:36I tried tonight trying to find deductions everywhere.
- 10:39New.
- 10:39Probably not 'cause we don't have a capital gain.
- 10:43Well, whatever.
- 10:44So back to the, less scary thing.
- 10:46Scream.
- 10:47Five.
- 10:48So what do you guys think about Jenna Ortega leading,
- 10:51the charge on this one though.
- 10:52Do you think she's part of what carries this movie to a
- 10:54higher level than scream four.
- 10:57Ryan: Yes.
- 10:59Jon: I like her.
- 11:01Ryan: Yeah, I, it's, it's,
- 11:02Kearns: too,
- 11:03Ryan: it's different because like, you see her, like if you're going back to screen
- 11:07four real quick, it shows that like whole universe, the stab movies have gained
- 11:14progress and there's so many of them.
- 11:16With this one, uh, the, sorry to rewind real quick with the Scream four, you know
- 11:21that they're gonna die with Scream five.
- 11:24You're in that like, is she gonna die, is she not?
- 11:27Because.
- 11:28The screen goes black after that final stab.
- 11:31And to quote John, if you don't see a death on screen, that
- 11:35doesn't mean they're dead or not.
- 11:38Jon: Yeah,
- 11:38Ryan: So when you see that, yeah, so you see that and you're like,
- 11:42okay, this is already changing.
- 11:44'cause you don't see the death in the beginning and then you're like, oh,
- 11:46she's in the hospital because we get introduced to Sam, her half sister, and
- 11:53she's living far off from her because of past occurrences in their family life.
- 11:58And she's kind of the badass I do like Sam, I think she was a great protagonist.
- 12:03Um, comparable to Sydney, but more with a badass edge instead of Sydney
- 12:08being like the Jamie Lee Curtis, like, you know, um, final Girl.
- 12:15And then building up Sam right there is already a best, which I liked.
- 12:19Jon: Yeah.
- 12:20I, Sydney, is like pure innocent and scream in the first one.
- 12:26And Sam at
- 12:27Ryan: Yeah.
- 12:27Jon: is, I don't even know if I'd go quite to badass so much as
- 12:32troubled and jaded and disturbed.
- 12:36Ryan: Okay.
- 12:37Jon: she, she knows truths about her past that troubling that you know
- 12:44that she is Billy Loomis's daughter.
- 12:47Ryan: I love that too.
- 12:48Jon: I think that's a nice touch.
- 12:50And I like, she has visions of her father talking to her and
- 12:55you know, of encouraging her towards not positive behavior.
- 13:01Ryan: Yep.
- 13:02Jon: And she's dating the son of Hollywood royalty in this movie.
- 13:08Ryan: Randy Quaid.
- 13:10Jon: Jack Quaid
- 13:11Ryan: Oh.
- 13:12Jon: Dennis
- 13:12Kearns: full
- 13:14Jon: uh, is Dennis' son
- 13:17Ryan: Dennis Qua.
- 13:18Sorry,
- 13:19Kearns: Dennis Quaid slowly morphed into Randy Quaid
- 13:22Jon: Yeah,
- 13:22Ryan: bit.
- 13:23Kearns: if you pay attention.
- 13:25Jon: which means that Jack probably will too.
- 13:27But for now, outside of this, where he is kind of like geeky, he's sort of
- 13:33blossomed into like, a fairly handsome leading man type in action stuff.
- 13:39Ryan: Yeah,
- 13:39Jon: they do a nice job casting this.
- 13:41We get another, Hollywood offspring.
- 13:45We, the Return of Mason Gooding, who's becoming a regular on this show?
- 13:51Ryan: I think this was like one of his.
- 13:52Kearns: Gooding been in for the, for the first time listeners?
- 13:57Jon: Uh, hard Eyes.
- 13:59Kearns: Yes.
- 14:00Which you should listen to next.
- 14:02Jon: a very similar character, I think, like, maybe not as
- 14:06like smarmy, like charming
- 14:09Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 14:11Jon: Scream Five, but it's a very similar character type and he, and,
- 14:18Mindy are, Randy Meek's niece and nephew.
- 14:24Ryan: which I love that tie in.
- 14:26Jon: They keep tying things together into, you get cameos, which you don't even know
- 14:33you're getting until you look at credits.
- 14:36Like there's a clip of stab five or stab eight rather with, um,
- 14:42Ghostface with a flame thrower.
- 14:44That's Matthew Lillard.
- 14:46Ryan: Oh, that's cool.
- 14:48Jon: You
- 14:48Kearns: that's cool.
- 14:49Jon: at, you have the scene at the party where they're toasting.
- 14:52Um, the character Wes who died, and all the voices are like, you get
- 14:58Matthew Lillard in there, you have Drew Barrymore's voice, Jamie Kennedy.
- 15:02It's all, all those voices are scream movie veterans.
- 15:07Ryan: That's awesome.
- 15:08Jon: and it's sort of designed to serve as a tribute to the character,
- 15:13they also named the character Wes.
- 15:17that scene is also a tribute to Wes Craven.
- 15:21Ryan: I like that.
- 15:22Jon: reuniting his people to one last time, I guess.
- 15:27Kearns: This is why John has 17 pages of notes right here.
- 15:30He just went through the line, the family trees and all that.
- 15:33That was cool.
- 15:35That was cool.
- 15:36Jon: I, I thought that was a nice touch that I wouldn't have known about if I
- 15:40hadn't, dug into this a little more.
- 15:42And if we weren't doing this, show, I wouldn't have bothered to look that up.
- 15:46Ryan: It's pretty cool 'cause it's a nice nod to a legend,
- 15:50a director, horror legend.
- 15:52And I like that.
- 15:53'cause when you, I watch and I'm just, you hear to Wes but now go into detail.
- 15:57I wanna watch that scene again to see if I can pick those, those voices out.
- 16:01I do wish they asked Johnny Depp.
- 16:02I know he is not a scream alumni, but Wes got his start and I know
- 16:06they had a good friendship, so that would've been pretty cool.
- 16:10Kearns: That would've been neat.
- 16:11This is like Cokehead days.
- 16:12Johnny Depp though we didn't, we were ca Captain Jack Sparrow.
- 16:17would've been kind of neat.
- 16:19Hey, we got a, we got a game this week.
- 16:22Jon: Of course we have a game this
- 16:24Kearns: It's time, gamey game
- 16:27Jon: that, it's dasher slash
- 16:30Ryan: Yes.
- 16:31Kearns: as it should be for a scream movie.
- 16:33Jon: and you know what, I'm gonna give you the topic because
- 16:36it's gonna go, it's, I don't
- 16:39Ryan: Okay.
- 16:39Jon: be as easy as you'd think it's gonna be.
- 16:41It's David Arquette movies.
- 16:43Kearns: Oh, sweet.
- 16:44All right.
- 16:44Eight legged freaks.
- 16:45Stash
- 16:45Ryan: Yeah, that's the first one.
- 16:48Oh,
- 16:49Kearns: What's the
- 16:49Ryan: a
- 16:49Kearns: the girl that's in that and sliders?
- 16:51Um, I'm stashing this, this is one of my favorite movies.
- 16:55Ryan: who, who was he in?
- 16:56The outsiders charm.
- 16:58Jon: I
- 16:59Kearns: ugly one.
- 17:01Jon: He's
- 17:01Ryan: He was?
- 17:02Jon: don't even, I don't believe he's even on the cover.
- 17:04He was like 12 or 13 when he was in this.
- 17:07Ryan: Yeah, because I don't,
- 17:08Kearns: their, is he a greaser or a, so it's what I wanna know.
- 17:12Damn.
- 17:13All right.
- 17:13Well I'm stashing.
- 17:14Jon: somewhere, but I can't find it.
- 17:16Kearns: Look at Matt Dillon.
- 17:17Ryan: I, I,
- 17:18Jon: slashing?
- 17:19Ryan: this is hard 'cause this is a good movie.
- 17:20I remember this from middle school.
- 17:22But
- 17:23Kearns: a
- 17:23Ryan: a legged freaks you might have ready to rumble on here.
- 17:25That was the movie, by the way.
- 17:26Ready to rumble.
- 17:27You might have that on there.
- 17:29Uh, there's so many good, David.
- 17:32Kearns: Eight.
- 17:33You picked Eight.
- 17:33Ryan: Hey.
- 17:34Yeah.
- 17:34You know what?
- 17:35Kearns: we have to do four and four.
- 17:36Jon: Hold on.
- 17:36No, I'm gonna make it three and five.
- 17:38Ryan: Oh, oh,
- 17:39Kearns: So we keep five.
- 17:40Okay, cool.
- 17:41Ryan: no, no.
- 17:42Keep three.
- 17:43Jon: Stash three slash five.
- 17:46Kearns: I, I damn it, I,
- 17:48Ryan: You know what I'm,
- 17:48Kearns: keeping the outsiders
- 17:50Ryan: I'm slashing it.
- 17:51I'll slash the outsiders.
- 17:52Kearns: might
- 17:53Ryan: You know what though?
- 17:53Kearns: it like a freak.
- 17:54Dude,
- 17:55Ryan: I, I'll recommend.
- 17:56Kearns: to save everybody in that fire and he, he died and
- 17:58you're gonna slash this film,
- 18:00Ryan: Yeah.
- 18:01Rumble fish.
- 18:02That's all I'm gonna say.
- 18:02Rumble fish.
- 18:03Kearns: be in this movie.
- 18:04It's, what is her name?
- 18:05Cherry Colas.
- 18:06The, the
- 18:06Ryan: Cherry Cola.
- 18:07Yep.
- 18:08Cherry Cola.
- 18:08And, um.
- 18:09Kearns: Every dude in the universe watched this movie and was like, man, I'd love to
- 18:12meet Cherry Cola by that chain link fence.
- 18:16Ryan: It's such, uh, very, it's, I'm thinking of the ending and stuff.
- 18:20And the book at the book is, read the book first before you watch the movie.
- 18:23Kearns: the one soc pulled out a knife during the brawl and they all, they all
- 18:27gang beat him 'cause he broke the rules.
- 18:28That was like my favorite part of the book.
- 18:31Honor Among Thieves kind of thing.
- 18:32Alright, anyway, enough, enough of the outsiders.
- 18:36Jon: All right, so you each have, has a
- 18:39Kearns: I.
- 18:40Jon: and Kerns has a stash
- 18:42Kearns: He slashed a friend his Ford Colo movie.
- 18:44What a Loser.
- 18:46Ryan: Oh.
- 18:46Oh.
- 18:46Hold on Graceland.
- 18:48Jon: 3000 miles to Graceland.
- 18:50Kearns: Speaking about Economic,
- 18:52Jon: legit love this movie.
- 18:54Kearns: it's a good movie.
- 18:56Jon: It's so dumb.
- 18:57It's so silly, but I love it.
- 19:01Ryan: It is.
- 19:02Kearns: Evan Costner,
- 19:04Ryan: I'm slashing this too though.
- 19:05Kearns: slash it.
- 19:06Yeah, we know it's
- 19:06Ryan: Yeah.
- 19:07Kearns: We know we got so many goodies coming up.
- 19:09This is a nice movie though.
- 19:11Ryan: This might be
- 19:11Kearns: this movie, like do a double feature.
- 19:13Do like two Wong Fu and 3000 Miles to Graceland in the
- 19:17same weekend or something.
- 19:19Ryan: it.
- 19:20That's actually a really good double feature, actually.
- 19:22Kearns: Yeah.
- 19:23Jon: That is a pretty good one.
- 19:24Yep.
- 19:25Ryan: Julie Numar.
- 19:28Jon: Next Ravenous.
- 19:32Kearns: Robert Carlisle plays such bad guy.
- 19:35Is he the bad guy in this?
- 19:36With his deep voice?
- 19:38With his evil?
- 19:39Jon: really good guys in this one.
- 19:41Kearns: That's a fair point.
- 19:43Ryan: What is this?
- 19:44Kearns: only option.
- 19:45Jon: You haven't seen ravenous?
- 19:46Ryan: This is like a frailty thing, I think.
- 19:48Yeah.
- 19:48No, I've never even heard of it.
- 19:50I never, well, like me.
- 19:53Kearns: re to,
- 19:57Ryan: I
- 19:58Kearns: you'd like
- 19:59Ryan: I'm relating it.
- 20:00Jon: You
- 20:00Ryan: I'm relating it for not seeing it.
- 20:02It looks cool.
- 20:03The cover looks cool.
- 20:04Uh, the, the poster.
- 20:06Kearns: I saw Brotherhood of the Wolf, and I always talk about that, like that's that
- 20:09era of movie making that I really like
- 20:12Ryan: All right, this is going on the list.
- 20:14Kearns: into these scripts and stuff.
- 20:15I'm gonna have to slash it, but I like this movie too.
- 20:19Ryan: How many slash
- 20:20Kearns: I'm, maybe I'll Stash one that has him on the cover for, for
- 20:25Arquette says, and David Arquette.
- 20:28The little.
- 20:28The little, and it feels like an insult.
- 20:31Jon: He's almost like comic relief in this.
- 20:34Kearns: Yep.
- 20:36Ryan: 1-800-COLLECT?
- 20:37I'm gonna slash it.
- 20:39I got to, I'm gonna be fair.
- 20:40I've never seen it.
- 20:41Jon: can you keep it?
- 20:43Ryan: I mean, I could be a rebel, but No, not this time.
- 20:46Jon: All right.
- 20:48Next,
- 20:51OG Buffy.
- 20:52Kearns: I love this movie,
- 20:54Ryan: I'm keeping it.
- 20:55Kearns: Peewee
- 20:55Ryan: first keep.
- 20:56Kearns: do we need the death scene
- 20:58Ryan: It's like the best part.
- 21:00Kearns: It's the best part of the movie by far.
- 21:02Uh, I'm slashing this one too,
- 21:06even though it's got that amazing David Arquette Vampire moment.
- 21:12Jon: So you, you both have two and two?
- 21:15Ryan: Wait, what?
- 21:16Kearns: another one.
- 21:16I don't think I stashed another one.
- 21:18Jon: No, you have two STEs left and two
- 21:20Kearns: Oh, got it.
- 21:21Ryan: okay.
- 21:22I was like, wait a minute.
- 21:23When did I, I was like,
- 21:24Kearns: crow.
- 21:26Ryan: I don't remember stashing anything else?
- 21:28Jon: next movie.
- 21:28There it is.
- 21:31Ryan: Keep stash.
- 21:32Yeah.
- 21:32Kearns: keeping it just for the, the, I had such a crush on the girl
- 21:35from Sliders, that's in this movie is the female lead, and it's just
- 21:40ludicrous how hot she is in this movie.
- 21:42I don't even care that I'm saying this on the podcast.
- 21:45Ryan: So for,
- 21:47Kearns: the spider?
- 21:47Actually,
- 21:48Jon: Yeah,
- 21:48Ryan: yes.
- 21:50Kearns: don't think you're gonna make it, darling.
- 21:52There's a lot behind you, but
- 21:55Ryan: Middle school.
- 21:56Kearns: out to sliders, by the way.
- 21:58Ryan: Gonna say Middle school me just was like fascinated with the
- 22:01huge spiders and thinking, man, I hope these people survive this.
- 22:04And being like, I hope someone like gets killed at the same time because it's
- 22:08like the spiders come outta nowhere.
- 22:10It's just they're ravenous and you're like, there's no hope, but no worry.
- 22:13Kearns: And it's
- 22:14Ryan: David Arquette.
- 22:15Kearns: Arquette in that leading male role too, he's gotta go through the motions.
- 22:19He's got a backstory and a conflict and all that fun stuff
- 22:23when he's usually the side guy.
- 22:25Ryan: Yeah.
- 22:27Kearns: Eight legged freaks.
- 22:28This was fun to watch.
- 22:30Jon: Yeah, this is a fun one.
- 22:32not arachnophobia and I think
- 22:34Kearns: No,
- 22:34Jon: some
- 22:35Ryan: No,
- 22:36Jon: but it's fun
- 22:38Ryan: you don't.
- 22:38Got John.
- 22:38Good man.
- 22:39Kearns: was going to be Arachnophobia is a movie that legitimately made
- 22:42it hard to shower for a while.
- 22:44This is
- 22:44Ryan: Yes.
- 22:44Kearns: spiders the size of like sedans.
- 22:48Jon: Yeah.
- 22:48Or this is more, more like similar to like the fifties giant insect movies.
- 22:56Ryan: Yep.
- 22:56And it works.
- 22:58Jon: Yeah.
- 22:58Kearns: Good
- 22:58Ryan: I can't wait for us to cover that.
- 23:01Kearns: It's a good hang.
- 23:03All right, so I only got one left now.
- 23:05Jon: You
- 23:05Ryan: Oh,
- 23:05Jon: have
- 23:06Ryan: yep.
- 23:06Jon: left and two slashes.
- 23:07So let's say where we go.
- 23:09Kearns: See where John's evil streak comes in here.
- 23:11There you go, Ryan.
- 23:14Ryan: I'm stashing it.
- 23:16I
- 23:16Kearns: gotta slash
- 23:17Ryan: will rule you, it's just, uh, I, Scott Kahn, David Arquette.
- 23:24Kearns: It's
- 23:24Ryan: made a mistake, but I'll accept it.
- 23:26Kearns: not as big into the, the wrestling stuff too.
- 23:28It's ready to rumble didn't resonate with me that much.
- 23:31It was one of those, uh, like I didn't pay attention while it was on kind of things.
- 23:35And that was back before cell phones.
- 23:38Jon: It also sort of like spawned the strangest David Arquette
- 23:42era where he's WCW Champion.
- 23:46Ryan: Yep.
- 23:48Uh,
- 23:49Jon: somehow, somehow a, a dying wrestling promotion decided the best way to save it
- 23:54was to make David Arquette your champion.
- 23:57Ryan: Oh, let, let's be real.
- 23:59WCW, I'm gonna say w CW was trying to revitalize itself because
- 24:03it was failing in the ratings.
- 24:04They hired a former writer from WWF Vince Russo, who Vince McMahon kind of directed
- 24:11him to, to like said yes to ideas.
- 24:13No to ideas.
- 24:14And that's why a lot of the ideas at that time, late nineties, early
- 24:18two thousands, worked in WCW.
- 24:20He was just doing anything and everything and there was no, no
- 24:23one saying, no one's to say no.
- 24:25And this is what we got, David, a kid as a world champion.
- 24:29Jon: It was throwing things at, at a wall and seeing what stuck.
- 24:32IWCW had about a three or four year period where they almost were able
- 24:40to pass WWE, you know, you had the NWO and people wanted that, and
- 24:46then it, they just couldn't sustain.
- 24:49Ryan: Real quick, they did, um, from 96 till, I think, late
- 24:5497, early 98, they beat him in the ratings because of the NWO.
- 24:58And then what changed was Austin, Austin and Tyson and Michaels at WrestleMania 14.
- 25:04Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 25:05Ryan: Mike Tyson walked through, everyone flipped and
- 25:09Jon: they, watered down the NWO when everybody in, in an, is in the
- 25:15NWO in some way, shape, or form.
- 25:17It's not fun anymore.
- 25:20Kearns: true, didn't they?
- 25:21That was all people they stole from the WWF too, like right.
- 25:25Sting
- 25:25Ryan: Mm-hmm.
- 25:26Jon: in, almost in no sting.
- 25:28Sting was not in WWE E until after.
- 25:31Kearns: Oh,
- 25:31Ryan: Yep.
- 25:32Jon: Um,
- 25:32Ryan: he was,
- 25:33Jon: almost everybody else was a WWE cast off.
- 25:38Ryan: yep.
- 25:39Hogan Nash Hall.
- 25:41Kearns: from Vince
- 25:43Ryan: Well,
- 25:43Kearns: and his empire.
- 25:45Ryan: real quick.
- 25:46Kearns: I don't think there's any real quick when it comes to you and wrestling,
- 25:49Ryan: No, no, no.
- 25:50This is real quick.
- 25:51You'll think this is cool.
- 25:51The gimmick was actually stolen from uh, Japan.
- 25:55It was done in Japan first, and then they saw it and took it to Houston America.
- 26:00So
- 26:01Kearns: makes sense.
- 26:02Ryan: see, it was quick.
- 26:03Kearns: That was quick.
- 26:04You're right.
- 26:04You are right.
- 26:06those Japanese Ludo, right?
- 26:08It's a Ja old Busto word.
- 26:10Ludo.
- 26:11Ryan: El Grande Americano.
- 26:13Kearns: Yeah.
- 26:13He speaks perfect Japanese, everybody.
- 26:16Ryan: He does, and Mexican.
- 26:19Kearns: And Mexican.
- 26:21Perfect.
- 26:21Mexican is the best part.
- 26:22Best way to end that a little bit.
- 26:25Jon: Yes.
- 26:25They, that, that's our segment of wrestling Talk for this week.
- 26:31Next movie,
- 26:33the og.
- 26:35Kearns: Flash.
- 26:36Ryan: I have to, I have to slash it.
- 26:38Kearns: you
- 26:38Ryan: have to.
- 26:39Jon: Yep.
- 26:39Kearns: Well what did he leave for last though?
- 26:41This is scary actually.
- 26:42'cause I could be safe and pick Screams.
- 26:44Screams of great movie.
- 26:46it would've been great if they ended the franchise with scream.
- 26:49Jon: don't, I don't think you'd be disappointed either way.
- 26:53Kearns: Hmm.
- 26:54I mean, I trust you enough to believe that.
- 26:56All right, I'm gonna, I'm gonna slash scream 'cause I'm
- 26:58not a slasher, a slasher guy.
- 27:00Through and through.
- 27:01I enjoy them to an extent, but they're not need nearly, they're not on the podium
- 27:05of my favorite type of horror movies,
- 27:07Ryan: I love scream.
- 27:09I would've stashed it, but Ready to rumble.
- 27:12Ready to rumble.
- 27:14Jon: I, I can't believe you have Buffy eight legged freaks and ready
- 27:19to rumble before you have scream.
- 27:21Kearns: so
- 27:22Ryan: I did.
- 27:22I did.
- 27:23Kearns: you use no regrets either.
- 27:24Ryan: No, I don't.
- 27:25I love, I love Buffy, I love eight Lady Freaks.
- 27:28Like this is like everything on Stars and TBS,
- 27:31Jon: I think I'm gonna give him another regret right now with,
- 27:37Kearns: Oh, I'm happy as hell right now.
- 27:39I am
- 27:39Ryan: I forgot he was in,
- 27:40Kearns: I forgot he was in this too.
- 27:42Ryan: he's in the, he's uh, he's one of the production assistants in the radio.
- 27:47Kearns: Sandler's probably most proud of this movie.
- 27:50I know it's not one of his, happy Madison Productions, but
- 27:52this is probably my favorite
- 27:54Jon: I
- 27:55Kearns: era.
- 27:55Jon: movie.
- 27:57Ryan: It's
- 27:58Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 28:00Even the, the soundtrack is cool, like, somehow you have a song from
- 28:05stuttering, John Melendez from the Howard Stern Show on this soundtrack.
- 28:09That works.
- 28:11Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 28:12Which is Wild Stuttering John Reference.
- 28:17Ryan: I just remember the question
- 28:18Jon: my way out of it.
- 28:20Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 28:21Ryan: John.
- 28:21Kearns: All right.
- 28:22That was Slasher Stash for the Scream five episode, everybody.
- 28:25Um, there's no winners or losers here, but
- 28:29Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 28:30I
- 28:30Kearns: Sam, I'm really happy with how mine turned out.
- 28:32Jon: I, I, I feel like you won this one because I got, I got Ryan to
- 28:36cut one of his favorite movies and
- 28:38Ryan: Yeah.
- 28:39Kearns: Yeah,
- 28:40Jon: happy
- 28:41Kearns: evil.
- 28:41Jon: of you guys to do that.
- 28:43Kearns: Yeah,
- 28:44Ryan: technically.
- 28:442, 2, 2, 2.
- 28:50Jon: it, also why I think we have to do 'em three and five, because four and four
- 28:56in this case wouldn't have been stressful.
- 29:00Ryan: No, no.
- 29:01I mean I'm already bold, so there it's it'ss happening.
- 29:07But there is a question I have to ask is, let me God, is that the question?
- 29:12Jon: let me, is
- 29:13Ryan: Alright, there we go.
- 29:14Jon: yes.
- 29:15Kearns: Comment below, viewers,
- 29:16Jon: The, the si the simplest answer.
- 29:19If you comment no, then I, I'm worried about you.
- 29:23Ryan: Okay.
- 29:23Just wanted to make sure.
- 29:25Kearns: if you can be in John's prayer circle for the night If you comment,
- 29:28no, he'll put you in his prayer circle.
- 29:31All right, everybody,
- 29:34Jon: My,
- 29:35Ryan: would be like
- 29:36Jon: prayers to Lemi will include you tonight.
- 29:40Kearns: Very well done.
- 29:41Well done.
- 29:42Ryan: little ace of spades chases.
- 29:44Kearns: A speeds.
- 29:46All right, so what else?
- 29:47What else about this movie do you think Bears highlighting?
- 29:50Scream five.
- 29:52Ryan: I feel,
- 29:53Jon: I think, go ahead, Ryan.
- 29:55Ryan: oh, I was gonna say, the relationship with Dewey and Gale,
- 29:59I mentioned this a couple episodes ago with great romances in horror,
- 30:03their evolution of the romance, their romanticism, as I would say, kinda.
- 30:10Concludes in this, but you see it begin in Scream 1 19 96.
- 30:15It, you know, furthers in 98 with Scream two, 2000 with Scream
- 30:20three, and then 2011 scream four.
- 30:23It's just, you see them grow, break up, get together, and it's mimicking
- 30:28real life, even up to this point where it's like they're divorced.
- 30:31And especially when they're talking, I feel like you see a lot of emotion,
- 30:35not only from them as characters, but from them as human, human beings, as
- 30:40people who loved each other and still love each other, but they agreed to go
- 30:44their separate ways but I mean, that was one of the biggest highlights I think.
- 30:48I I, and seeing Sydney come back and being like a passing of the
- 30:53torch, I did like that a lot.
- 30:55even though she's.
- 30:57Kearns: like of the bump of the movie needed
- 31:00Ryan: Yeah.
- 31:01Until you realize she, until you realize she's supposed to be in scream six, and
- 31:04there's a contract failure of negotiation, which screws that up, but we'll,
- 31:10we'll cover that in the next episode.
- 31:12Kearns: Yeah, I guess.
- 31:12Well, there's another reason why this franchise sucks.
- 31:17Ryan: Well, they allude to it.
- 31:20Jon: I was a fan of how they did a lot of the lead up to, some of the death scenes
- 31:26like Wes is in particular, they give you a whole bunch of like, oh, this is the
- 31:31moment he's gonna close the refrigerator and Ghostface is gonna be there.
- 31:34He's gonna close this door and goes like, they misdirect you and misdirect you.
- 31:38Almost to, to the point where you're like, oh, maybe Ghost face isn't gonna get Wes.
- 31:43Maybe Ghost Face was only gonna take out the Sheriff.
- 31:47Kearns: Yeah.
- 31:49Ryan: I love the unpredictability.
- 31:51Jon: they did that with a, a couple of scenes.
- 31:53They sort of, and I'd like the scene in the hospital up until they killed Dewey.
- 31:58Kearns: Yeah.
- 31:59Jon: I like how they handle, you know, Tara injured, trying to hide
- 32:03in a wheelchair, Sam getting there just in time with Dewey to save
- 32:09her and it and Ghost faces giving her like the real Sophie's choice.
- 32:15Like, I can, I can kill your boyfriend, or I can, I can kill your sister.
- 32:21You choose.
- 32:22And it's like, like I,
- 32:24Kearns: That Batman's choice, Rachel or Harvey?
- 32:27We
- 32:28Ryan: Rachel.
- 32:29Kearns: Sophie's choice Rachel
- 32:34anyway.
- 32:36Jon: that, you know, a few scenes like that that work.
- 32:39I like, I like some of the stuff at the party at the end.
- 32:43I think where they lose me a little bit aside from Dewey is the killers
- 32:49are kind of too dorky for me.
- 32:54Kearns: Hmm.
- 32:55Jon: Like we've already talked about Jack Quaid looking kind of geeky in this role,
- 33:01and Amber played by Academy Award winner.
- 33:04Mikey Madison is, you know, she's, she's fine.
- 33:09She's, her acting is fine, but the character is just
- 33:13like, uh, you're annoying.
- 33:14You're not, you don't come across as, Ghostface to me.
- 33:18You're just, you're just, I, you're just annoying.
- 33:24So that was my problem.
- 33:25Real problem with this is that the two characters that wind up being
- 33:29ghostface are not cruel enough to me.
- 33:36Ryan: I could,
- 33:37Kearns: enough.
- 33:37Jon: their motivations.
- 33:39Ryan: I mean, the motivations a repeat of the fourth film kind of,
- 33:43Jon: Yeah.
- 33:44Kearns: one?
- 33:44No, no, nevermind.
- 33:45Not the first one.
- 33:46Ryan: I'd say more the fourth one.
- 33:48'cause that's what, um, Sydney cousin is trying to do, is like, she spoiler alert
- 33:54and scream for, she's trying to kill Sydney so she can be the new survivor
- 33:58and kind of bring back the stab series, quote unquote, with a new version.
- 34:04And it's the same thing, but better.
- 34:06Kearns: franchise.
- 34:06All of the motives for them, except for the first one, which is satire.
- 34:11So it is inherently stupid too, but it's like, okay, the motives for this,
- 34:16the ghost face killers are stupid.
- 34:20They're so dumb.
- 34:22Ryan: Aunt Jackie.
- 34:22Kearns: of right out of it.
- 34:23I know that you're supposed to kind of have suspension of disbelief.
- 34:27Jackie.
- 34:27Yeah, she's trying to get back at Roseanne for her anti MAGA
- 34:31statements or her MAGA statements.
- 34:34Isn't that think?
- 34:35And Jackie's hyper liberal, if I'm not mistaken.
- 34:37So there, there's a bit of a conflict there.
- 34:40Jon: Yeah.
- 34:40I have a question for you guys.
- 34:42Based on.
- 34:44Through the whole movie, they referred to Billy Loomis as a serial killer.
- 34:49Was he really a serial killer or is he more of a spree killer?
- 34:53Kearns: Spree.
- 34:55Ryan: He's more spray.
- 34:56Kearns: is a pattern killer with breaks between slayings.
- 34:59It's ritualistic.
- 35:01This could be considered ritualistic.
- 35:02Ooh, let's mind hunters this bitch
- 35:05Ryan: Hey, it can be, but it was more revenge.
- 35:08It was more revenge.
- 35:09Kearns: mother or annoyed by her sufficiently to become a serial killer?
- 35:13That's the
- 35:14Ryan: Well.
- 35:15His father left the family because his father was hooking up with
- 35:18Sidney's mom, who was, excuse my, excuse my language, the town whore.
- 35:23Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 35:24Kearns: Yeah, his dad left and then he hated Sydney for it.
- 35:27'cause her mo his, yeah.
- 35:28Mom was the town bicycle.
- 35:29Ryan: Yeah,
- 35:30Kearns: hmm.
- 35:31Let's think here I, it's, I think it's clear cut that it has to be spray, but
- 35:35I'm sure, I'm sure there are people
- 35:37Ryan: yeah,
- 35:38Kearns: make an argument.
- 35:38Jon: don't think he's a true serial killer.
- 35:40I think he's a spree killer,
- 35:42Kearns: Do
- 35:43Ryan: yeah,
- 35:43Kearns: three or more?
- 35:44Right.
- 35:45Jon: diminishes my fav.
- 35:46One of my favorite lines is, you know, at the end when Sam some
- 35:52stabbing of her own and she never f with the daughter of a serial killer.
- 35:57Ryan: yeah.
- 35:58Jon: like that line.
- 35:58I like that line, but
- 36:00Kearns: That's a good one.
- 36:01Jon: killer.
- 36:02Ryan: But it doesn't roll off.
- 36:03Kearns: of those things, that's one of those things where you Yeah, exactly.
- 36:06Where you kind of have to give it to her.
- 36:09Ryan: This don't mess with a spree killer.
- 36:11What a shopping spree like.
- 36:13Kearns: we're gonna give the colloquialism, we're
- 36:15gonna use that on this one.
- 36:16Jon: Yeah.
- 36:17It's a, we're gonna use the phrase people are know about more and Yeah.
- 36:22Yeah.
- 36:22Kearns: Yeah, that's fine.
- 36:25Great question though.
- 36:26That
- 36:26Ryan: That's a good question.
- 36:30Jon: We can, I can sort of, and give you a little anecdote that came
- 36:34about at the end of watching this, and we can go into another topic
- 36:40briefly if you guys would like.
- 36:41Um, so Alison and I finished this, watching this Wednesday,
- 36:48like shortly after we had heard about James VanDerBeek passing.
- 36:52Ryan: Okay.
- 36:54Jon: And we, um, afterwards we're sitting there thinking, and I had, I,
- 36:59I had a memory of him in a Scream movie
- 37:03Ryan: Okay.
- 37:04Jon: and I was like, I, I said, I went looking for it
- 37:08and I'm like, I can't find it.
- 37:09Was it uncredited?
- 37:10So I asked Allison, Hey, do you remember him being in a Scream movie?
- 37:14She's like, thinks from a minute.
- 37:16She's like, yeah, he was definitely in a scream movie.
- 37:20He's not in a scream movie.
- 37:23He's
- 37:23Kearns: Not at all.
- 37:25Jon: And so I think, you know, working it around my head, I think I. Attached
- 37:30him to the scene in Jay, in Silent Bob,
- 37:34Kearns: That's what I'm thinking too.
- 37:36Jon: and then attached Jay in Silent Bob to a Scream movie and
- 37:41Kearns: That makes sense.
- 37:42Jon: them into the same movie.
- 37:45So Allison says, wow, we just, Mandela affected ourselves.
- 37:49Kearns: Yeah, you
- 37:50Ryan: Yeah.
- 37:51Kearns: didn't even need the help.
- 37:52This time I.
- 37:53Ryan: Bernstein Bears.
- 37:54Jon: isn't that the Mandela effect is, is a group delusion?
- 38:00Ryan: Mm-hmm.
- 38:01Kearns: it's true.
- 38:01And, well, my major issue with stuff is I'm, I've, uh, make
- 38:05connections very easily and when one of those is forged incorrectly,
- 38:10it is very hard for me to shake it.
- 38:12So I would believe that for like the rest of my life.
- 38:15There's like a Shazam one.
- 38:17I think I have.
- 38:19That's really bad.
- 38:20Yeah,
- 38:20Ryan: Sinbad.
- 38:21Kearns: bad.
- 38:21Yeah.
- 38:22Ryan: That that existed.
- 38:24That existed.
- 38:25Jon: not,
- 38:25Ryan: I watched, I watched it,
- 38:27Jon: You
- 38:28Ryan: that was n Shaquille O'Neal.
- 38:29Kearns: for TV movie and they.
- 38:30Jon: saw, you saw Shaq as a genie, and you saw sin bed and some other stuff.
- 38:36That's what you saw.
- 38:38Ryan: I.
- 38:38Jon: that's what the man, the Mandela, you get it mixed up in your brain and
- 38:43then you bring it up to somebody else who's going to, people will generally
- 38:48go along with your memories because they're your memories and then you impart
- 38:53your memory on somebody else, and now you've, you're creating Mandela Effects.
- 38:58Ryan: Bernstein Bears
- 39:01Jon: Stein, it was always, it was always
- 39:04Kearns: That one, I'm, I was like not a Berenstein bear or what was the other one?
- 39:09With the one that has marmalade.
- 39:11I wasn't a proper bear person.
- 39:13I, I slumped it.
- 39:14Ryan: Gold ux?
- 39:15Kearns: Bears.
- 39:16Ryan: No.
- 39:16Kearns: I didn't do Winnie the Pooh.
- 39:17None of the British written stuff.
- 39:20I never did
- 39:20Ryan: Oh po.
- 39:20Kearns: of those.
- 39:21Ryan: Who's good?
- 39:22Thomas is good too.
- 39:23Kearns: like the white trash bears.
- 39:24The, uh, what are the ones?
- 39:25The Briar brother, Brear Bear and those ones, they're like
- 39:29Ryan: Yes.
- 39:30Kearns: Virginia Bears out, the Outback, woods Bears.
- 39:34Those are the ones I had.
- 39:36Jon: So they were all cousins and siblings
- 39:38Kearns: Well, yes.
- 39:40Jon: spouses.
- 39:43Kearns: and all sorts of goodies.
- 39:44Ryan: Bob Billy,
- 39:45Kearns: listener base isn't from that area.
- 39:47If you're moth, man, people please don't get mad at us.
- 39:51Jon: We
- 39:51Ryan: don't
- 39:52Jon: Virginia.
- 39:52You're
- 39:53Kearns: I do
- 39:53Ryan: we do?
- 39:54Kearns: Virginia.
- 39:54I do love West Virginia.
- 39:55I've worked there many times and it is way less scary than some
- 39:58other places in this country.
- 40:00Mississippi is the.
- 40:03Ryan: What was that?
- 40:06Well, I got a question for you guys because they make a comment in this,
- 40:10in this film, and it got me thinking.
- 40:13Do you see a lot of similarities in the first film as well as with this
- 40:17one with the original Halloween from 78 as well as Halloween two from 1980?
- 40:27And I mean, like they mentioned Halloween, like with pacing the killer and I
- 40:31can see that, but with the, this one.
- 40:34As they mentioned Halloween, right?
- 40:36And West Cr Craven features Halloween in the first film.
- 40:39This one, they're using hospital scenes, right, which is very most
- 40:43apparent in the second Halloween.
- 40:45And by them mentioning that in this one and this kind of being not a
- 40:49direct sequel to the first one, but three films down, like I, I don't
- 40:56know if I'm the only one seeing it.
- 40:58I'm just curious if you guys saw it as well.
- 41:01Jon: I didn't, I understand when you bring it up.
- 41:04I had not thought of it.
- 41:07It's,
- 41:08Kearns: It.
- 41:08Yeah, I could see how you put those pieces together.
- 41:12Jon: yeah, there's
- 41:13Kearns: I didn't,
- 41:13Jon: I would, was nodding when you brought it up, 'cause I thought you were gonna
- 41:17go to the 2018 Halloween where it's, you know, revitalized with a younger
- 41:23generation of, recognizable actors and.
- 41:27Ryan: Fair.
- 41:27Kearns: and it's also quite bad.
- 41:30Ryan: 2018.
- 41:32Jon: No, I
- 41:32Ryan: Yes,
- 41:33Jon: I,
- 41:33Ryan: that was a good one.
- 41:34Jon: two third,
- 41:35Kearns: How do you stir the pot?
- 41:36Jon: of that, that Halloween trilogy.
- 41:39Two
- 41:39Ryan: Yes.
- 41:39Jon: uh, they didn't stick the landing.
- 41:41But
- 41:42Ryan: No.
- 41:42Jon: 2018 and Halloween kills I love and Halloween kills that hospital scene,
- 41:48especially with when it was released
- 41:51Kearns: an homage.
- 41:52Jon: works so well.
- 41:53Ryan: Yes.
- 41:55And I would recommend the director's cut because the ending is a little
- 41:59more, it's a little more, it's much better than the original ending where
- 42:03it just, I feel like in the theatrical, it just kind of like drops dead.
- 42:07But in that the director's cut, you get like that face off kind of from a
- 42:11distance between Michael and Jamie as she's doing her own voiceover after
- 42:16he kills basically the whole town.
- 42:19Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 42:21It's so easy.
- 42:22gonna keep doing stuff like that to you when I know it's gonna rile you up.
- 42:26Give us like eight minutes of content.
- 42:28I'm just gonna say stupid shit.
- 42:31Ryan: I bring her back.
- 42:32Kearns: those were a real breath of, now bring her back as a pile of garbage.
- 42:35And so are you.
- 42:36Ryan: Oh,
- 42:37Kearns: the
- 42:38Ryan: hey listen.
- 42:39I sent you a video of these beautiful VHS tapes.
- 42:43I don't know if you even went past the other 'cause.
- 42:45There was a beautiful weapon.
- 42:46There was a beautiful weapons one, but it started with bring her back, which
- 42:49I knew was gonna get him, but I was like, hopefully he'll go through it.
- 42:52No.
- 42:53Did you go through it?
- 42:54Because the weapons one was beautiful.
- 42:56Kearns: I did go through it.
- 42:57Ryan: Alright, thanks.
- 42:58Kearns: hate it.
- 42:58I still hate you.
- 42:59Uh, so, so I think the, uh, those Halloween movies, those re uh, we
- 43:05call it 2018 Halloween Kills and whatnot are, uh, better because of
- 43:10how bad the Rob Zombie ones were.
- 43:13Jon: Oh yeah, that
- 43:14Ryan: Yeah.
- 43:15Jon: That
- 43:15Ryan: Oh
- 43:16Kearns: That one didn't rile them up.
- 43:17See, I knew you'd agree with that.
- 43:18Yeah.
- 43:19Ryan: no.
- 43:20Kearns: You don't
- 43:20Ryan: Yes.
- 43:21Kearns: Myers.
- 43:22Ryan: Well, one, one I like two.
- 43:25Kearns: fridge.
- 43:26Jon: Okay.
- 43:27But I
- 43:27Ryan: the backstory.
- 43:28Jon: one has the ongoing Rob zombie weakness.
- 43:31He can't write women.
- 43:34Kearns: Yeah.
- 43:34We've talked about this
- 43:35Ryan: Yeah.
- 43:35Kearns: three consecutive episodes, by the way.
- 43:37Which is funny, but it's true.
- 43:39Jon: comes up, that's,
- 43:41Ryan: Didn't he, didn't he do a decent job with the, um,
- 43:44uh, I'm skipping on the title.
- 43:46Kearns: That's where it ends.
- 43:47Ryan: No.
- 43:47Um,
- 43:48Kearns: with Dula.
- 43:49House
- 43:49Ryan: the,
- 43:50Kearns: Corpses is garbage.
- 43:51The Halloween movies were garbage.
- 43:53Jon: going
- 43:53Ryan: radio one
- 43:55Jon: Lords of Salem?
- 43:56He, it's better, it's his, his writing of.
- 44:02female is better, I think it's only because he's writing it
- 44:07specifically for his wife.
- 44:10Kearns: Uh um,
- 44:10Ryan: fair.
- 44:11Kearns: power of Love
- 44:13Ryan: Which she outshined or tribe.
- 44:16Jon: I mean, she outshines as much as she can, outshine.
- 44:19I
- 44:19Ryan: Yeah.
- 44:19Kearns: Hmm.
- 44:20Jon: she's always, she's also, the other big weakness in his movies is he keeps
- 44:25casting her and she's not very good.
- 44:27Ryan: No, no.
- 44:30Like she was okay in Halloween, baby Firefly, she does a decent job, but
- 44:35I feel like that's including her own personality, minus the killing in that.
- 44:40And he kinda lets her, like those movies, I feel like he lets them let loose.
- 44:44Uh, of course you got Bill Moseley leading the pack, so like
- 44:47there's a little control there.
- 44:49But I think it got said hagg too.
- 44:53Kearns: Let's, let's do some reviews and flush this turd because
- 44:56we're, we're doing a, we're doing an episode on Halloween now.
- 44:59Ryan: This is not a turd.
- 45:00Jon: Be be we give you ours.
- 45:03Let's see what some other people thought.
- 45:05I, I actually have four this week 'cause uh, most of 'em are pretty
- 45:09short and there are a few, a few real winners such as this five star
- 45:15Kearns: Ooh.
- 45:17Jon: success in one hour and 54 minutes with 23 exclamation points.
- 45:23Kearns: Wow, you counted them
- 45:25Jon: them.
- 45:26Ryan: That.
- 45:26Jon: hard it, do you know how hard it is to count exclamation
- 45:30Ryan: How are your eyes?
- 45:31How are your eyes after this training?
- 45:33Jon: They're not good.
- 45:36r for some sexual references, languages, and strong bloody violence with a
- 45:43lot more than 23 exclamation points.
- 45:46And a one.
- 45:48Kearns: This guy loves strong bloody violence.
- 45:50Everybody.
- 45:51Jon: Yeah.
- 45:51Yeah,
- 45:52Kearns: He also needs to take his meds.
- 45:53Who's the next one?
- 45:56Jon: Five stars.
- 45:57Kearns: Damn.
- 45:58Jon: It was awesome.
- 46:01had some actors, kids actors in it, including Cuba,
- 46:05Gooding Jrs and Dennis Quad's.
- 46:07Soon in it love having Oscar winning actors.
- 46:12Mikey Madison as one of the main antagonist.
- 46:16It says soon.
- 46:18Ryan: Soon.
- 46:18Jon: mean,
- 46:19Kearns: Wouldn't it be cool if they merged those two sons together or the two kids?
- 46:22I mean together into like one being super being what?
- 46:25Kuba putting Equate.
- 46:28Jon: listen, that's kind of how that reads.
- 46:31Kearns: Yeah.
- 46:31Ryan: Yeah.
- 46:32Kearns: what I sort of
- 46:33Jon: that there soon is cast in this movie.
- 46:36Kearns: amalgamation of how can we combine their DNA.
- 46:43Jon: Okay, so now we're on to people who did not like this at all.
- 46:48Half
- 46:48Kearns: Hmm.
- 46:50Jon: With a weak plot and an untalented new cast.
- 46:54This has to be the worst in this series, sir. You did not see three
- 46:59Ryan: Yeah, we did not
- 47:01Jon: have just made it about the main cast instead of trying to hand the torch
- 47:06to a new final girl who can't act at all.
- 47:11I think that,
- 47:11Ryan: have,
- 47:12Jon: that's, I
- 47:13Kearns: that might work on Monday or Tuesday, but I'm
- 47:15not taking that on Wednesday.
- 47:18No, sir.
- 47:19Jon: in this is fine.
- 47:20I like, it's not
- 47:21Kearns: It's got an Oscar winner.
- 47:23I mean it bent.
- 47:26Ryan: yes, it did.
- 47:28Jon: nobody's like level performance in this, but
- 47:33Kearns: No,
- 47:33Jon: bad enough that
- 47:35Kearns: no,
- 47:35Jon: untalented
- 47:37Kearns: got crazy acting jobs, even just death of a unicorn.
- 47:40we got to see her flex a little bit and stuff, and she's, she's great.
- 47:44Ryan: It's a starting point for a lot of them in this or bigger.
- 47:48Kearns: ignoring David Arquette right now and things like that.
- 47:51But ob obviously all the old cast members, we know what they
- 47:53can do, so we're not gonna spend
- 47:55Ryan: Yeah.
- 47:56Jon: absolutely.
- 47:56And one last half star review.
- 48:01These newer screen movies are horrible.
- 48:04They have barely any essence of the original trilogy, which was
- 48:09actually a quadri trilogy and don't really do anything to shake up
- 48:13the repetitive and tired formula.
- 48:17There are good moments here and there, but the majority of it is just fluff.
- 48:23The story is beyond contrived and the characters are painfully uninteresting.
- 48:29is the highlight, obviously, but we really don't see much of him.
- 48:33Just feels like a lazy attempt to cash in on the scream name.
- 48:37Kearns: I wrote that review everybody, just so you know.
- 48:40Ryan: You.
- 48:40Kearns: I.
- 48:41Jon: Like they, there's
- 48:42Kearns: I agree with everything he said.
- 48:45Jon: some valid points in there, but like to end with like, you don't
- 48:48see enough of Ghostface in this
- 48:50Kearns: Now you see,
- 48:51Ryan: You see him
- 48:51Kearns: more in Ghostface.
- 48:52Jon: think you
- 48:52Ryan: or she?
- 48:53Jon: as,
- 48:54Ryan: He, she.
- 48:55Kearns: yeah,
- 48:55Jon: much ghostface as you ever saw.
- 48:58Ryan: Yeah.
- 48:59I think
- 48:59Kearns: you just like, like Godzilla's not on screen enough and things like that.
- 49:03I, I get that, that one I'll give you guys, but the rest
- 49:05of it I really vibed with
- 49:09Ryan: I just,
- 49:10Kearns: Hollow character, same old stuff.
- 49:12Rehashed plot
- 49:14Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 49:15Ryan: it's the comfortability,
- 49:17Jon: yeah.
- 49:18Kearns: money comfortability.
- 49:20Ryan: sadly.
- 49:21But it brings in the viewers and people want it more.
- 49:25Jon: there are, there are good moments in a movie.
- 49:27It can't be a half star, a half star movie has to have
- 49:31nothing about it that you like.
- 49:34Kearns: Yeah.
- 49:34I don't think I, I can't give it a half star, but, alright.
- 49:39What do you, or is it our turn?
- 49:41Ryan: It is our turn.
- 49:42Kearns: I usually like to go last, but I think I'm gonna be,
- 49:44I'm gonna be that guy to set
- 49:45Ryan: No go first.
- 49:47Jon: Okay.
- 49:47Ryan: I wanna hear your view.
- 49:48Okay.
- 49:49Kearns: it's two stars because it's just, I just find that it painfully unoriginal
- 49:53to continue making these movies.
- 49:55I'm sure black phone will end up in the same spot soon and things like that.
- 50:00I just can't with this, how do you make seven movies eight movies
- 50:04off the freaking screen franchise?
- 50:06How do you even do that?
- 50:08We're not talking Fantasm here.
- 50:11Jon: How do you make 10?
- 50:12Jason Voes movies.
- 50:14Kearns: Exactly, but
- 50:15Ryan: Oh, that's excellent.
- 50:16Kearns: I don't know why, but I feel like that's okay.
- 50:19Like Leprechaun having as many movies is also okay, but this
- 50:23isn't, and I don't know why.
- 50:24I feel like it's because the first movie was a work of art and they destroy
- 50:29it after doing too many iterations.
- 50:31Two is passed more than Passable.
- 50:33It's a good movie too.
- 50:34And we already talked about three and four.
- 50:36Five is good.
- 50:37Of all the ones we've discussed, other than one, five is the best.
- 50:41It does all these things.
- 50:42Well, it gives you that nostalgic feeling other than watching one over again.
- 50:46I think five was my favorite.
- 50:48Ryan: Okay.
- 50:49Kearns: it's just, I'm so tired of it.
- 50:50That's Maine.
- 50:51I'm gonna stop with my curmudgeons.
- 50:53So two stars.
- 50:54Ryan: No, you're fair.
- 50:56Jon: that's fair.
- 50:57Ryan: That's fair.
- 50:58Jon: Ryan?
- 51:01Ryan: Four.
- 51:02The reason why is be I'll.
- 51:04Let me explain.
- 51:05You watch, you know, I'm a big fan.
- 51:08Halloween, I'll wave a flag for and scream.
- 51:11I, I do like scream.
- 51:13It's a guilty pleasure for some, of course that I won't rehash like we discussed.
- 51:17But you see the first one, you love it and the best thing is the second one.
- 51:22'cause three and four, don't hold up.
- 51:25So walking into it, I was like, ah, am I gonna see this?
- 51:29Am I not?
- 51:30And I waited and I saw it for $5 at Walmart.
- 51:33It was a Blu-ray.
- 51:34I said, I'm gonna give it a shot.
- 51:36And it, it exceeded my expectations and I was expecting something crappy.
- 51:43I was like, oh, it's gonna be like for, and it was fresh.
- 51:47You had new characters.
- 51:48There was legacy.
- 51:50The writing.
- 51:50The writing could have been better.
- 51:52There could have been moments that could have been better and
- 51:54changed, but it brought it back.
- 51:56And it's what
- 51:57Kearns: feel
- 51:58Ryan: film,
- 51:58Kearns: something more going on here, Ryan, where like
- 52:00Ryan: like
- 52:01Kearns: just cooked perfectly while you're watching.
- 52:04'cause you get a little lucky.
- 52:04Maybe in the middle of the movie Netflix asked you if you were
- 52:07still watching kind of thing.
- 52:09Ryan: I,
- 52:09Kearns: Like
- 52:09Ryan: I really,
- 52:10Kearns: happened.
- 52:10I feel like
- 52:11Ryan: I,
- 52:11Kearns: really good day that day
- 52:12Ryan: I really enjoy,
- 52:13Kearns: star movie.
- 52:15Ryan: I really enjoyed it.
- 52:16Um, I, I did, I feel like.
- 52:19Kearns: All right, fair enough.
- 52:22Jon: Great.
- 52:22I'm usually the high man here.
- 52:26I'm
- 52:26Kearns: Yeah.
- 52:26You are usually the Hyman.
- 52:28Ryan: Wait, what?
- 52:29Kearns: You're not the highman.
- 52:30Jon: one.
- 52:31Kearns: a little faster.
- 52:31Double speed real quick.
- 52:32Ah,
- 52:33Ryan: What was your rating?
- 52:34Jon: not the high man.
- 52:35Kearns: it is.
- 52:37Jon: I'm not the high man.
- 52:38Um, I'm
- 52:40Kearns: Isn't that a trophy you get for being good at football?
- 52:44Jon: I, yeah.
- 52:45Considering I usually go, like, I go into a movie expecting a 2.5 to a
- 52:50three, and you know it, it's based on how it meets or exceeds expectations.
- 52:58go about a 3.5.
- 53:00Ryan: Okay,
- 53:01Jon: It's about a c
- 53:02Kearns: Well, your eyes got awfully when he said four.
- 53:05I'm surprised you hit 3.5.
- 53:06I feel like you dragged him up, Ryan.
- 53:08Jon: I was between 3, 2 5 and three five.
- 53:11I went, I ga I, I'll go 3
- 53:19Ryan: a movie.
- 53:21Python.
- 53:21Everyone.
- 53:22Python.
- 53:23Kearns: Oh boy.
- 53:25Ana Boa versus Mega
- 53:25Jon: 3 0.5.
- 53:32It,
- 53:33Kearns: Alright guys.
- 53:34Jon: slightly exceeded my expectations, which admitted we
- 53:37were admittedly were kind of low.
- 53:39Kearns: Yeah.
- 53:41Yeah.
- 53:42Agreed.
- 53:43Agreed.
- 53:44Well this is Scream five everybody.
- 53:45So I hope you had a good time
- 53:47Ryan: And now we're getting it.
- 53:48Kearns: us.
- 53:49Ryan: Yeah, but we're,
- 53:50Kearns: hit our top fives in a second, unless we have any juicy tidbits
- 53:53before we roll into our top fives.
- 53:56Ryan: no, not really.
- 53:57We're gonna cover scream six next week, ladies and gentlemen.
- 53:59And we're going to New York City for that one.
- 54:02Kearns: I
- 54:02Ryan: They're going outta California.
- 54:03Oh, this is this more Gore closeup shots, shotguns.
- 54:09He's got a shotgun in this one.
- 54:11Kearns: Yeah,
- 54:12Ryan: yeah.
- 54:13But.
- 54:13Kearns: Ghostface needs Amendment privileges.
- 54:18Watching him run and fall is half the fun of the movie.
- 54:23Anyway.
- 54:24Anyway, all right.
- 54:26Ryan: so
- 54:27Kearns: minutes, Ryan.
- 54:27Go
- 54:28Ryan: top fives are sequels.
- 54:31That exceeded my expectations.
- 54:33I went and I haven't, I haven't covered any of these.
- 54:37Maybe.
- 54:38Kearns: for this episode, but sick.
- 54:40Ryan: Well, yeah, I, yeah, but this one was hard 'cause I, I didn't want repeats.
- 54:45'cause I can mention Hell Racer two.
- 54:46I can mention
- 54:47Kearns: movies
- 54:48Ryan: two I No, but I wanna give it some fresh, there is one movie I, I
- 54:53am re quoting 'cause I do like it.
- 54:55But I'm gonna start off with Kern's favorite, uh, movie franchise.
- 55:02Kearns: Perfectly timed.
- 55:03It's almost like I did it.
- 55:06It's almost like I did it myself.
- 55:08Ryan: I wasn't gonna say bring her back.
- 55:10Thank you very much.
- 55:11I was gonna say child play too, because.
- 55:14it's a sequel that exceeded my expectation.
- 55:17'cause you see the first one, you go through the whole thing.
- 55:19He gets, you know, transfers his soul to a doll Chucky played by Brad Dur.
- 55:25And then you start off with the sequel, them creating a new doll
- 55:29with his blood and it's blood.
- 55:32And, you know, he gets reanimated and watching it as a kid, I
- 55:39was like, okay, this is cool.
- 55:41But like, I don't understand why this would make sense.
- 55:44Like I kinda get it, like you have to bring him back.
- 55:47But as I grew older, I have more of a respect for it and it exceeded 'cause it's
- 55:52like he's still doing what he's doing.
- 55:53It was,
- 55:54Kearns: seconds for your other four movies.
- 55:56Ryan: it was a great comeback and it's a great film.
- 55:59Plus Don Mancini wrote and directed again.
- 56:02Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 56:03Ryan: that leads to my number four.
- 56:05My next sequel to Exceed Expectations is final destination too.
- 56:10I. The first one, you see it.
- 56:13Death is everywhere.
- 56:14So how do you do the second one?
- 56:15How do you exceed the expectations?
- 56:17You have a frigging log scene that lives with you for the rest of your life.
- 56:21When you travel to Taconic 84, anywhere there's a highway, like
- 56:26Kearns: I
- 56:26Ryan: it's
- 56:26Kearns: He could live anywhere people, not just those two
- 56:29roadways where they intersect, but
- 56:30Ryan: Route 66,
- 56:32Kearns: Yeah, there it is.
- 56:33Ryan: you know, like
- 56:34Kearns: Docs,
- 56:35Ryan: you,
- 56:35Kearns: docs, Ryan.
- 56:38Ryan: I got a classic on that.
- 56:39But again, like death is following them and they change it up.
- 56:43There's different scenes that kind of, as a viewer you're like, oh
- 56:46crap, they're getting creative.
- 56:48But the lock scene in the beginning still sticks, which leads to my number three.
- 56:53How do you exceed a Dracula movie from 1934 with Bella Lago?
- 56:59You make a sequel in 1936 called Dracula's Daughter and.
- 57:03It exceeds my expectation.
- 57:05Again, I watch a lot of the universal horror films as a kid because you
- 57:08see Bella LA goes, you see Dracula like this is like the main villain.
- 57:12How can you surpass that?
- 57:13And they do that by creating a villain who doesn't wanna be a villain.
- 57:18She tries to burn her father's body after his death to cure her Vampirism.
- 57:23And that's the whole thing.
- 57:24Like she doesn't want to be a vampire and she's succumbing to the blood lust.
- 57:28And it's also big for that time because it's a first L-B-G-Q-T
- 57:35movie because she's a lesbian.
- 57:37And that wasn't very, that wasn't heard of, that wasn't shown on film.
- 57:41And Universal took the chance and made this film.
- 57:43And it's, it's an underrated classic that I recommend people to watch.
- 57:48Number two, I'll be quick.
- 57:50It's son of Frankenstein.
- 57:51It's the third film in the Frankenstein series.
- 57:54Came out in 1939 starring Basil Rathbone as the son of Frankenstein, bringing
- 58:00back the monster, played by Boris Karloff because of I Gore played by Bella Lago.
- 58:06exceeding expectations.
- 58:07'cause you see the first two, it's a great, two great.
- 58:11And then you see the third one, you're like, how are they gonna do this?
- 58:14And they bring the monster back.
- 58:16And the ending is very memorable, because of the castle falling
- 58:21that simple, universal.
- 58:23And then they do ghost, but it doesn't hit like sun.
- 58:28And that leads to number one, doctor sleep.
- 58:32Oh, come on.
- 58:32I'm not that bad.
- 58:34Kearns: These are, these are really cool.
- 58:35Actually.
- 58:35The last two are really cool.
- 58:37Ryan: Thank you,
- 58:37Kearns: is a cool one, man.
- 58:39Ryan: uh, exceed expectations.
- 58:41'cause uh, I know how the regular novel ends and how the new,
- 58:46the, the novel Dr. Sleep is.
- 58:48I was wondering how they were going to kind of tie the book in
- 58:51as well as with Kubrick's Fish, which Flanagan does amazingly.
- 58:55And it was, I wasn't expecting it to be good.
- 58:59And it was, it was.
- 59:01And I love the knots, the original, like Kubrick's vision and The Shining
- 59:05and what he Flanagan does with the, the, the book and including that.
- 59:10It was just a nice blend.
- 59:12But these are all the seagulls that exceeded.
- 59:14Sorry, you know me, I got a lot of passionate
- 59:16Jon: And, and Mike Flanagan has kind of become the official Stephen King adapter
- 59:22Ryan: Oh yeah.
- 59:23Dark tower, right?
- 59:24He's doing Dark Tower.
- 59:25Kearns: It
- 59:26Ryan: Carrie,
- 59:26Jon: for pointing that out.
- 59:28Ryan: Carrie.
- 59:30Jon: Um, he's doing the, he's got the mist.
- 59:32He's like, he's the official,
- 59:34Kearns: The mist was good.
- 59:37Jon: official Stephen King adapter at this point.
- 59:40Ryan: And that's because he just did one.
- 59:42Well, he's done a few miniseries, but him doing midnight mass, I feel sealed.
- 59:46His deal.
- 59:46'cause midnight mass is basically Salem's lot
- 59:49Kearns: It
- 59:49Ryan: in a nutshell.
- 59:50Kearns: It is
- 59:50Ryan: Yeah.
- 59:51Kearns: another imagining of Salem's lot.
- 59:53Yeah, it's great.
- 59:54It's
- 59:54Ryan: oh yeah.
- 59:55Kearns: its own though.
- 59:55It's not, yeah, I mean it's just enough si.
- 59:58The similarities are there and everything, and we love it.
- 1:00:00We love the fact that it is what it is and it is what it isn't and all that stuff.
- 1:00:03It's great.
- 1:00:05Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:00:05Kearns: Midnight mass is wonderful.
- 1:00:06Jon: go back to, uh, top five topic that I've done before, but
- 1:00:11with different movies because it's kind of an endless topic.
- 1:00:15and it's, five More Academy Award winners in horror.
- 1:00:19Kearns: Ooh, five more.
- 1:00:21Okay.
- 1:00:21Jon: Five more.
- 1:00:22So since we have Mikey Madison, who won best Actors for an Nora in
- 1:00:26Scream Five, I'm gonna go with this.
- 1:00:29Uh, so we're gonna start in 1994 with a movie that stars Jack
- 1:00:35Nicholson, who has won Academy Awards.
- 1:00:37For one flew over the Cuckoo's Nest terms of endearment and about
- 1:00:41Schmidt and Christopher Plummer who won for beginners and it's wolf.
- 1:00:47Ryan: Yep.
- 1:00:48Good.
- 1:00:49Jon: after accidentally hitting a wolf while driving Will Randall stops to check
- 1:00:53on the animal when it, it bites him, he gets some rabies shots, but definitely
- 1:00:58needed way more vaccinations as the true nature of the beast is revealed.
- 1:01:04Kearns: That movie's actually, holds up pretty well too.
- 1:01:07I watched Wolf again somewhat recently.
- 1:01:10Ryan: I gotta check it out.
- 1:01:11I haven't seen it since the nineties.
- 1:01:13Jon: Yeah,
- 1:01:14Ryan: I, oh no, I watched it.
- 1:01:16Jon: It
- 1:01:16Ryan: I watched it.
- 1:01:17Jon: I've seen it.
- 1:01:19Ryan: It's like, which is an eastwick?
- 1:01:21Jon: yep.
- 1:01:21So number four, we're going to just go back to 2019 for a movie that stars.
- 1:01:28I hope I get the name right.
- 1:01:29I've been practicing it and I still don't think I've nailed it.
- 1:01:32It stars Ngo,
- 1:01:35Ryan: No, that's good.
- 1:01:36Jon: who, who won for, um, 12 years a Slave and it's little monsters.
- 1:01:41a musician, a school teacher, and a TV personality must come together
- 1:01:45to protect a group of field tripping children from a zombie outbreak.
- 1:01:50Kearns: They were tripping.
- 1:01:51Jon: Yep.
- 1:01:52Field tripping.
- 1:01:53Like it's, it's, this is a fun one.
- 1:01:56It's like, it doesn't do anything significant, but it, it's a fun diversion.
- 1:02:02They do a nice job with it.
- 1:02:04It's funny.
- 1:02:05It's, it, it works.
- 1:02:08my number three, we're gonna go back to 1976 Betty Davis is in this one.
- 1:02:15She won Oscars for Jezebel and Dangerous, and it's burnt offerings.
- 1:02:21Ryan: Oh, okay.
- 1:02:23Jon: So, Betty Davis in her eyes starring this one.
- 1:02:26a family moves into an old countryside mansion only to find their new home.
- 1:02:31Contains an evil presence that may not let them leave.
- 1:02:37Ryan: Okay.
- 1:02:37Jon: a, there's a pretty cool cast in this.
- 1:02:40a lot of like horror luminaries and cool cult actors and stuff.
- 1:02:46Definitely a fun watch.
- 1:02:47Definitely worth it.
- 1:02:48number two is another twofer.
- 1:02:50We're gonna go to 1995 where we get Ben Kingsley, who won for Gandhi.
- 1:02:58Forrest Whitaker who won for the last King of Scotland, coincidentally
- 1:03:03two biopics, and it's species.
- 1:03:07Kearns: Great
- 1:03:07Ryan: Oh my God.
- 1:03:08I.
- 1:03:10Jon: Yep.
- 1:03:10Kearns: Uh, another one that like, don't let your 12-year-old watch
- 1:03:12that, or you're gonna have problems.
- 1:03:17Jon: more than nightmares.
- 1:03:18Kearns: Yep.
- 1:03:19Jon: scientists attempt to catch a, a female alien who is attempting to
- 1:03:22mate with a male human and breed more monstrous, seductive, sexy aliens.
- 1:03:28you also get Michelle Williams in this one who's was nominated for a bunch
- 1:03:33of, academy Awards, but has not won.
- 1:03:36Kearns: Hmm.
- 1:03:37Ryan: Uh,
- 1:03:39Jon: And my number one is an actress.
- 1:03:41I know we've all been sort of off the show raving about, and we go to
- 1:03:482009 this movie, it's Emma Stone.
- 1:03:52Ryan: okay.
- 1:03:52Jon: Who is one for poor things in la la land and it's zombie land.
- 1:03:57Kearns: Zombieland, she's like royalty at this point.
- 1:04:00When you're looking at her catalog and how it's growing, she's just crushing it.
- 1:04:04Jon: yep.
- 1:04:05Ryan: And it start?
- 1:04:05Jon: 15, 15 years or 16 years ago, she's making zombie land.
- 1:04:10Kearns: it's wild.
- 1:04:12Ryan: Then.
- 1:04:12Kearns: was 15 years ago.
- 1:04:13Jesus,
- 1:04:14Jon: I mean 17 2009 is
- 1:04:17Ryan: Ah.
- 1:04:18Jon: ago already.
- 1:04:18Yes.
- 1:04:19so four survivors of a zombie apocalypse traveled cross country
- 1:04:22to the promised safe haven of Pacific Palisades Amusement Park.
- 1:04:28the cast of zombie land is really I mean aside from zombies and like little bit
- 1:04:33rolls, it's really five actors and all five have Academy Award dominations.
- 1:04:39Ryan: Yeah, they did.
- 1:04:41Jon: Did you have Jesse Eisenberg?
- 1:04:43have Emma Stone, you have Woody Harrelson, uh, Abigail Breslin, and the big bm,
- 1:04:50Ryan: Mm-hmm.
- 1:04:50Bill Murray?
- 1:04:51Jon: Murray.
- 1:04:52Kearns: bill Murray, God rest his soul.
- 1:04:54Jon: all.
- 1:04:55Ryan: No, he's still alive.
- 1:04:56Kearns: Oh, all right.
- 1:04:57Not like Tim Curry.
- 1:04:58Got it.
- 1:04:59Ryan: Don't, he's still alive too.
- 1:05:00Kearns: Oh,
- 1:05:01Ryan: Oh.
- 1:05:01Kearns: Good, good, good, good, good.
- 1:05:02Actually, I'm not even gonna joke about Bill Murray 'cause like Tim Curry's
- 1:05:04Ill and whatnot, and it could happen and we'd be like, all right, well,
- 1:05:07you know, he was sick for a long time.
- 1:05:08Bill Murray goes, it's gonna be a national tragedy.
- 1:05:13Ryan: You see him on hot ones recently.
- 1:05:14Real quick.
- 1:05:15Kearns: It was funny as hell
- 1:05:17Ryan: They didn't train the gopher.
- 1:05:19It was just a wild animal.
- 1:05:21Kearns: dunk his teeth into my flesh through the, through the mesh
- 1:05:24on my, my steal links in my glove.
- 1:05:27Anyway.
- 1:05:28All right, Great.
- 1:05:31Top fives
- 1:05:32Ryan: That was great.
- 1:05:33Kearns: in a timely manner.
- 1:05:34Delivered in a timely manner.
- 1:05:36Might I add You're a gentleman, sir.
- 1:05:39Ryan: That's, I, I, I, you know, I try to get the crevices and stuff.
- 1:05:45I'm like putting cement down.
- 1:05:46Kearns: a good crevice.
- 1:05:47All right, everybody.
- 1:05:48That's gonna be zino mania for tonight.
- 1:05:51Ryan's like, God damnit.
- 1:05:53All right everybody, we'll catch you next time for Scream six.
- 1:05:57Ryan: Have a good one.
- 1:05:59Jon: Hey.
- 1:05:59Uh,
