- 0:01Speaker 1: Local news now, a VOCM News Update.
- 0:05Speaker 2: I'm Sarah Strickland. The Parti Quebecois completed a dramatic political
- 0:09Speaker 2: comeback by winning the Quebec election. Karen Rebo has the details.
- 0:15Speaker 3: Four years after winning only three seats in the legislature,
- 0:18Speaker 3: the PQ last night won 59, enough to form a
- 0:22Speaker 3: minority government under leader Paul Saint-Pierre Plamondon. The separatist leader
- 0:27Speaker 3: told supporters during his victory speech in Montreal that that
- 0:30Speaker 3: he will work with Quebec's English speakers and Prime Minister
- 0:33Speaker 3: Mark Carney when it serves Quebecers. He's also pledged to
- 0:36Speaker 3: hold a third sovereignty referendum, but only after Donald Trump
- 0:39Speaker 3: leaves the White House in 2029. Charles Maillard's Liberals will
- 0:44Speaker 3: form the official opposition for the third straight election, while
- 0:47Speaker 3: the Quebec Conservatives, led by Éric Duhem, will make a
- 0:50Speaker 3: historic entry into the legislature and gain official party status
- 0:54Speaker 3: with its 19 seats. The CAQ, which has governed the
- 0:57Speaker 3: province for eight years and entered the campaign with 79 seats,
- 1:02Speaker 3: was wiped off the map and ended the night with none.
- 1:06Speaker 2: The province's fall flu and COVID vaccination program will be
- 1:09Speaker 2: rolled out in a couple of weeks. Chief Medical Officer
- 1:12Speaker 2: of Health Dr. Janice Fitzgerald says the program will be
- 1:16Speaker 2: rolled out later this month, noting that more information will
- 1:19Speaker 2: be released shortly.
- 1:21Speaker 4: As in other years, generally speaking, it starts like that
- 1:24Speaker 4: third week in October.
- 1:25Speaker 3: Yeah, so it'll be in the next couple of weeks
- 1:27Speaker 3: that we'll be coming out.
- 1:29Speaker 2: So stay tuned. A 49-year-old man from Gamboa is facing
- 1:33Speaker 2: several charges following a violent incident involving Glovertown RCMP. Lindsay
- 1:38Speaker 2: Lush was arrested Sunday after allegedly threatening someone with a
- 1:42Speaker 2: weapon and striking two police officers with a blunt object.
- 1:47Speaker 2: One officer, who suffered minor injuries, was treated at hospital.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Lush is charged with several offenses, including assaulting police with
- 1:55Speaker 2: a weapon and resisting arrest. Energy Minister Lloyd Parrott believes
- 2:01Speaker 2: the sale of Suncor's stake in the Terranova, White Rose
- 2:04Speaker 2: and West White Rose projects to UK-based Ithaca Energy is
- 2:08Speaker 2: a good thing for Newfoundland and Labrador. The sale has
- 2:11Speaker 2: a price tag of over $ 1 billion. Suncor's stake in
- 2:16Speaker 2: Hebron and Hibernia is unaffected. Parrott says he's extremely excited
- 2:21Speaker 2: and happy with the news, noting that Ithaca is a
- 2:24Speaker 2: major player in the North Sea and they are familiar
- 2:27Speaker 2: with operating in conditions similar to the province's offshore.
- 2:31Speaker 4: Suncor, obviously we've heard for years that they're looking for
- 2:34Speaker 4: an exit to get back out to west into the sand,
- 2:37Speaker 4: which is their wheelhouse. So this is good, this is good.
- 2:40Speaker 4: And Suncor still remains a player here through Hibernia and Hebron.
- 2:43Speaker 4: But this is the first new entrant we've had into
- 2:45Speaker 4: our oil and gas in a long time. And it's exciting.
- 2:50Speaker 4: It's very exciting to have someone new coming in. And
- 2:53Speaker 4: it shows that they not only believe in Newfoundland and Labrador,
- 2:56Speaker 4: but they believe in the basin and they believe in
- 2:58Speaker 4: the long-term viability of itself. I think it's great news
- 3:01Speaker 4: for Newfoundlanders and Labradoreans.
- 3:03Speaker 2: Prosecutors allege an Air Canada employee provided the doctored way
- 3:07Speaker 2: bill that enabled what investigators have called one of the
- 3:10Speaker 2: largest gold heists in Canadian history. Here's Jason White.
- 3:14Speaker 1: The Crown Attorney told court Parm Paul Sidhu was one
- 3:16Speaker 1: of the inside men with the knowledge and access to
- 3:19Speaker 1: help carry out the 2023 heist at Toronto Pearson Airport.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Another man picked up more than $ 22 million in gold
- 3:27Speaker 1: and currency from one of the airport's cargo bays. The
- 3:30Speaker 1: driver who picked up the gold had an airway bill
- 3:32Speaker 1: for a shipment of fish. But prosecutors say that document
- 3:36Speaker 1: was altered with a handwritten number for the gold shipment.
- 3:40Speaker 1: Sidhu has pleaded not guilty to theft and conspiracy charges.
- 3:44Speaker 1: Jason White, the Canadian Press.
- 3:47Speaker 2: Starbucks is facing a lawsuit over sugar and sugar-free protein drinks.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Here's Lisa Dwyer.
- 3:54Speaker 5: Starbucks is facing a consumer lawsuit over claims that the
- 3:57Speaker 5: protein drinks labeled as sugar-free on its cafe menus may
- 4:01Speaker 5: actually contain more sugar than a Reese's peanut butter cup.
- 4:04Speaker 5: The federal lawsuit alleges that Starbucks sells eight protein beverages
- 4:09Speaker 5: in the U.S. that are marketed as sugar-free. but contain
- 4:13Speaker 5: varying amounts of sugar, and says that Starbucks is violating
- 4:16Speaker 5: federal labeling regulations. Starbucks says that the sugar in the
- 4:20Speaker 5: drinks come from the protein-boosted milk it uses. The company
- 4:24Speaker 5: says it does not add sugar to the drinks, and
- 4:27Speaker 5: it uses sugar-free syrup for flavoring. I'm Lisa Dwyer.
- 4:31Speaker 2: The list of electronics you can recycle in Newfoundland and
- 4:34Speaker 2: Labrador has expanded. Officials announced that office equipment, e-scooters, handheld
- 4:39Speaker 2: power tools, and toys have been added to the provincial program.
- 4:44Speaker 2: They join a list that already includes several household appliances
- 4:47Speaker 2: such as vacuums and microwaves. Michelle Marley with Recycle My
- 4:52Speaker 2: Electronics says many of these items contain valuable metals and
- 4:55Speaker 2: plastic that can be extracted and reused in other devices.
- 5:00Speaker 6: There's actually a lot of really good things in those
- 5:04Speaker 6: electronics that can be recycled and used again. Again, you've
- 5:08Speaker 6: heard a lot today about the circular economy. So, you know,
- 5:11Speaker 6: things like glass, plastic, steel, some of the bits and pieces,
- 5:16Speaker 6: like there's a lot of silver, there's gold, there's so
- 5:19Speaker 6: many good things in there that can be extracted and
- 5:23Speaker 6: put back into the manufacturing supply chain. So that's really important.
- 5:27Speaker 2: That's your news. I'm Sarah Strickland.
