- 0:02Hey, welcome to the City Point Church podcast.
- 0:04Thanks for joining us. Every day is an opportunity to
- 0:07take hold of. So we hope this message inspires
- 0:10you and build your faith, but it helps you have more of a God
- 0:13perspective for your day. Enjoy.
- 0:17Let's open God's Word, shall we? Can read along on the screen to
- 0:21send us Mark 1615 and it reads. And then he told them going to
- 0:28all the world and preach the good news to everyone.
- 0:31Anyone who believes and is baptized will be saved, but
- 0:35anyone who refuses to believe will be condemned.
- 0:39These miraculous signs will accompany or follow those who
- 0:43believe. They will cast out demons in my
- 0:46name and they will speak in new languages.
- 0:49They will be able to handle snakes with safety, and if they
- 0:53drink anything poisonous, it's not going to hurt them.
- 0:56They will be able to place their hands on the sick and they will
- 1:00be healed. When the Lord Jesus had finished
- 1:03talking with them, he was taken up into heaven and sat down in
- 1:06the place of honor at God's right hand.
- 1:09And the disciples went everywhere and preached, and the
- 1:12Lord worked through them, confirming what they had said by
- 1:16many miraculous signs. As a church at the moment we are
- 1:21looking at the book of Acts. You might go, well, why are you
- 1:25in Mark? That was in Mark.
- 1:27It's a bit awkward. You didn't get the memo.
- 1:31Now we're in Acts and Mark 16 and Acts 1 is a bit of an
- 1:36overlap. It's talking about the same
- 1:38scenario. And so I want to overlap here
- 1:42and, and read now about what Jesus did in these last days
- 1:49just before he left the disciples and he gave the Great
- 1:52Commission. And so in Matthew 18, sorry,
- 1:56Matthew 2818, there was this version that said, therefore go
- 2:00and make disciples of all nations baptizing, just like
- 2:03Pastor TJ was announcing for next week, baptizing them in the
- 2:07name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
- 2:11And so let's bring up Acts, Acts 11, it says in my first book, I
- 2:18told you, let's just call him Theo because I'm Australian and
- 2:22big names get shortened. So Theo, about everything Jesus
- 2:28began to do and teach them until the day he was taken up to
- 2:31heaven after giving his chosen apostles further instructions
- 2:35through the Holy Spirit during the 40 days after he suffered
- 2:40and died, that was Jesus. Now I've lost my spot.
- 2:44He appeared to the apostles from time to time, and then he proved
- 2:47to them in many ways that he was alive.
- 2:49That was great news. He died and then he rose again.
- 2:52So he's walking around with them and talked to them about the
- 2:56Kingdom of God, his favorite subject.
- 2:59And once he was eating with them, he commanded them.
- 3:02So this is really important information, right?
- 3:05If you can imagine like someone is on their deathbed and and
- 3:08then they outcome with this really important they they, they
- 3:11talk about the really important stuff.
- 3:13I love you and I love the kids. I believe in you.
- 3:16Whatever comes out in those moments.
- 3:18This is Jesus last moments with his disciples.
- 3:20Very important information. So he comes out.
- 3:25So once he was eating with them, He commanded them, do not leave
- 3:27Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift he promised.
- 3:31As I told you before, John baptized with water.
- 3:34But just in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy
- 3:38Spirit. So Jesus is giving the disciples
- 3:41their next steps. We love next steps here.
- 3:44He's like, he's got the Commission.
- 3:46Go into all the world, preach the gospel, baptize people, wait
- 3:50for a few days. You're going to get this gift of
- 3:53Holy Spirit. It's going to be awesome.
- 3:56And so when the apostles, this is verse 6, when the apostles
- 4:02were with Jesus, they kept asking him, Lord, has the time
- 4:08come for you to free Israel and restore our Kingdom and you go.
- 4:15That's a little bit off topic. The name of Jesus actually means
- 4:20Yahweh, which is Jesus saves. But our beautiful disciples,
- 4:26they were a little bit distracted.
- 4:28They were actually a bit distracted by the name of his
- 4:31meaning because they were waiting for Jesus who saves to
- 4:38come and save them from Roman dictatorship.
- 4:43And, and we've kind of look back on, on the story of the gospel
- 4:47of Jesus and the fact that he died with hindsight and go, yes,
- 4:51he came to die to restore us back into relationship with God.
- 4:54He came to set us free from the bondage of sin and all of its
- 4:58oppression. And he set us free.
- 5:01He saved us. And we understand what that
- 5:03means. But the disciples at this moment
- 5:05were still a little bit confused.
- 5:07They're like, well, when's this big army coming?
- 5:09Like, when are you going to overthrow Israel?
- 5:12Like, when are you going to overthrow the Roman Empire so
- 5:15that Israel can thrive again? They were just a little bit off,
- 5:19off topic. Hang on.
- 5:23Has anyone ever, is anyone here a, a, a nautical navigator, like
- 5:28with boats or ships? Do you want to like, has anyone
- 5:30got a boat license? No, you do.
- 5:33OK, So correct me if I'm wrong. Oh, OK, we've got another one
- 5:37over here. If you've got a, a boat and your
- 5:42navigation is off by this much, what's the impact in the long
- 5:47run of your destination? I feel like it's, it's not this
- 5:51much, of course, like if you're this much off a navigation and
- 5:55you're, you're planning to land on the jetty in, in let's say
- 5:59Peru, it's not like you get this far off the jetty.
- 6:02I feel like you land in another country.
- 6:05Is that right? Yeah, what I like.
- 6:11Jesus loves his disciples. He loved these apostles poured
- 6:16in, but they were just a little bit off.
- 6:19And so Jesus has to come in and go, guys, grab their attention
- 6:23and bring it back to the really important directive.
- 6:27So Jesus replies, and he says the Father alone has the
- 6:31authority to set those dates. Chill out guys and times and
- 6:36they are not for you to know, OK?
- 6:39Then he comes back and brings them right back off their
- 6:41little, you know, tiny little off off point.
- 6:44And he says, but you will receive power when the Holy
- 6:48Spirit comes upon you and you will be my witnesses telling
- 6:51people about me everywhere in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in
- 6:55Samaria and to the ends of the earth.
- 6:58And so he grabs their attention and he and he redirects it and
- 7:02goes, here's the directive, here's the Commission, here's
- 7:06what you're supposed to do. This is the really important
- 7:08information. I know you want to talk about
- 7:10this and you feel like it's the relevant thing to be talking
- 7:14about. I know it's important to you,
- 7:15but can you just come back here? This is the focus.
- 7:19This is what's important. So let's see how they went.
- 7:23That was Acts 8. Let's go to the very next verse
- 7:26in Acts 19. After saying this, he was taken
- 7:29up into a cloud while they were watching, and they could no
- 7:33longer see him. As they strained to see him
- 7:36rising into heaven, 2 white robed men suddenly stood among
- 7:42them, men of Galilee. They said, why are you staring
- 7:47into heaven? Jesus has been taken from you
- 7:50into heaven. I can, I can kind of imagine the
- 7:53scenario here of all of the disciples gathered and looking
- 7:57up into heaven. And then these angels, they come
- 8:00around to the crowd and they're like, what?
- 8:10What are we looking at? Are we checking the rain?
- 8:16Like what? What are we trying to see, guys?
- 8:26He's gone. He's in heaven.
- 8:29What was the last thing he told you to do?
- 8:32What's the directive? Come on back.
- 8:35Come on back to directive. Come on back to mission.
- 8:42The title of the message this morning is on mission.
- 8:46Do we live on mission? So as we open up the book of
- 8:51Acts, which I do encourage everyone here to be reading this
- 8:54month, we see the early church spring into action.
- 9:00And so I thought it would be a good thing to do this morning to
- 9:04ask three questions of ourselves.
- 9:06Can we have a nice big, you know, self reflection?
- 9:09This morning we're going to ask three questions of ourselves
- 9:13about how we do mission, the purpose of our mission mission,
- 9:18our why. And so we're going to start with
- 9:20question number one. But you're going to have to wait
- 9:22for it because I need a drink. I can feel the anticipation.
- 9:31Question one, does your mission point to Jesus?
- 9:39In John 14/6, Jesus declares this about himself.
- 9:43I am the way, the truth, and the life.
- 9:46No one comes to the Father except through me.
- 9:50That's a big statement. Jesus came to earth on mission
- 9:55and his assignment was you and I.
- 9:58His assignment was humanity. God is obsessed with humanity
- 10:03and he loves us so much that he brought Jesus to come in and
- 10:07bridge that gap so that we can come back into relationship with
- 10:11Him. He came, He died, He rose again
- 10:16so that we may experience abundantly life here with Him
- 10:20and experience eternal life with Him in heaven.
- 10:25Jesus is the hero of every story, so does your mission
- 10:31point to Him? Paul says in 2nd Corinthians 11
- 10:38to Eve was fooled by the snake in the Garden of Eden.
- 10:44In the same way, I'm afraid that you will be fooled and LED away
- 10:50from your pure love for Christ. You see, Paul had a bit of a
- 10:55battle on his hands. False doctrine was starting to
- 11:00enter the church and it was leading people's hearts away
- 11:05from Jesus. Here's the problem with false
- 11:08doctrine. It looks Christian.
- 11:14It can sound Christian. It often has lots of good points
- 11:22and you can hear it and it will just be this far off.
- 11:29It can present as righteous in 2nd Corinthians 1113 to 14, Paul
- 11:37says, but they make themselves look like true missionaries of
- 11:41Christ. It is no surprise the devil
- 11:44makes himself look like an Angel of light.
- 11:49Jesus mission is Jesus focused. Jesus mission is Jesus focused,
- 12:00but we have to be careful to check what we're listening to
- 12:05because we can just be a little bit off.
- 12:11There's so much information out there.
- 12:14There's so much. So we've got to filter it
- 12:17through Jesus word, the Holy Bible and go, are we on mission?
- 12:23Is this purely about Jesus? Is this the gospel of Jesus
- 12:27Christ? Is this the good news?
- 12:29Or is it more focused on maybe empathy for others?
- 12:34Sounds good, sounds Christian. Sounds like a a great thing to
- 12:39to jump on. It often comes as a misguided
- 12:43form of empathy. Have you ever heard a God of
- 12:47love wouldn't allow that to happen?
- 12:51God's grace is so rich we don't even need to repent or confess
- 12:56any sin. There is no need for
- 12:59transformation or spiritual growth because God loves me the
- 13:03way I am. God is love, so I don't believe
- 13:09people will go to hell. These are half truths.
- 13:16The problem with a half truth is that you're missing the whole
- 13:19picture. It's still a lie. 1/2 truth is a
- 13:23lie. It's this much off, but it's
- 13:26going to land you in Pakistan instead of Peru.
- 13:33I love Pakistanian people, by the way.
- 13:35I love all people, all nations. That was not a reference.
- 13:38Thank you. We love Israel, we love
- 13:40Pakistan, I love God's people. The gospel is for every nation,
- 13:44every person under the sun, every colour, every diversity.
- 13:50The gospel of Jesus is for every person breathing.
- 13:55But that's why we got to have this gospel message, gospel like
- 14:00pointing to Jesus because God is love and he doesn't want to
- 14:05experience any nation, any person, any diversity group, any
- 14:10individual. He doesn't want to be separate
- 14:13from them. He doesn't want to be separate
- 14:15from you, He wants to be back in relationship with you.
- 14:20That's why God sent Jesus. It's why he, he brought him here
- 14:25to be the sin for us, so that when God looks at us, He sees
- 14:29the purity of that beautiful spiritual blood.
- 14:33He wants that for us, but we have to choose Him back.
- 14:38It's not enough that he just died.
- 14:40We we have to choose him back. We have to accept God's love.
- 14:45We have to accept his forgiveness.
- 14:48That's gospel, that's the Bible. This is true.
- 14:53That's the message of Jesus. He does love you the way that
- 14:57you are. Come, come as you are.
- 15:01He loves you so much that he removed every barrier so that
- 15:05you could have access to him, can be forgiven, set free,
- 15:10delivered whole, restored. And I'm going to throw this word
- 15:14out that I read in here and transformed and transformed.
- 15:22Repentance is actually a very normal part of Christian life.
- 15:27It doesn't mean you walk around feeling terrible about
- 15:29everything. No, there's so much good news in
- 15:32Jesus. Do you know what repentance
- 15:33looks like? If Jesus was standing here, I'm
- 15:36facing him. That's what repentance looks
- 15:39like. It's all about walking towards
- 15:43Jesus. But repentance is a normal part
- 15:48of a Christian life. It's focused on Jesus.
- 15:52We got to read this Bible. 2nd Corinthians 2 two says I made-up
- 15:57my mind that while I was with you I would speak nothing except
- 16:01Jesus Christ and his death on the cross.
- 16:05So in your mission, is it Jesus? It might sound passionate, it
- 16:12might sound good, you might empathize with it, but does it
- 16:17point to Jesus? Is it gospel?
- 16:22Is it found in His Word? Because this word, His word,
- 16:26meeting Jesus will bring about life to your soul.
- 16:29It brings about freedom, restoration, it will bring you
- 16:32into a place of hope in His beautiful name.
- 16:38Is your mission, your reason centred in Him?
- 16:41Question 2. Does your mission support or
- 16:48uphold God mission? What's God's mission in the
- 16:56establishment of the early church like we just read about
- 17:00in Mark 16 and in Acts 1, Jesus is is with his disciples, his
- 17:05chosen crew and and the mission for them was to go into the
- 17:10world and preach the gospel out of that was the establishment of
- 17:17Church of the early church. Church is God mission.
- 17:23The local church is God mission and he loves this place and he
- 17:28moves in and through it in Mark we read earlier that these
- 17:33miraculous signs will follow those who believe they will cast
- 17:36out demons in my name and they will speak in new languages.
- 17:40They will be able to handle snakes with safety and if they
- 17:43drink anything poisonous, it won't hurt them.
- 17:46They will be able to place their hands on the sick and they will
- 17:49be healed. I'm going to throw a scenario
- 17:51out to you. We just had our healing services
- 17:54a couple of months ago, and in that I believe someone was
- 17:59prayed for and they just left their crutches there because
- 18:01they didn't need them anymore because they got healed.
- 18:04Who was it that prayed for that person?
- 18:05Do we know? No, let's just imagine it was
- 18:08Pastor Graham for a moment. So in that moment, you've got a
- 18:11man who's receiving healing because Pastor Graham has just
- 18:15prayed for him. And so we just heard what
- 18:18accompanies or what follows those who live on mission.
- 18:23Let me ask you a question. Is it following Pastor Graham
- 18:28and the person who's giving up their crutches, or is it
- 18:32following all of us? Hands up if you think it's just
- 18:37Pastor Graham and the person who received healing.
- 18:40Show of hands. Oh, you're also scared.
- 18:44Show of hands if you think it's all of us.
- 18:53I would argue that it follows all of us.
- 18:57I would argue that we as a body and an entity and an Organism,
- 19:02Is that right? Did I say that right?
- 19:04Risky word. As a body of believers, it
- 19:13follows all of us. You know, the conversations that
- 19:17happen after a moment like that when someone throws away their
- 19:20crotches is we. It's guess what we experienced
- 19:25as a church this week. Guess what we saw?
- 19:29It's not guess what Pastor Graham did.
- 19:31It's we. And we as a body of believers
- 19:36are experiencing and walking in godly mission and we all have
- 19:42partnership with that. Josh Pennisi was here.
- 19:45He came to the one of the miracle services.
- 19:48The reason his family came who did not know Jesus was because
- 19:53someone put a pamphlet in his letterbox.
- 19:56The person who put a pamphlet in his letterbox was a girl from
- 20:00youth. If I've got the story right, she
- 20:08put one pamphlet. She delivered one pamphlet
- 20:11because she wanted to be involved in what we were doing
- 20:15as a body. The reason that she knew to put
- 20:18something in the letter box is because we have a youth program.
- 20:22She attends one service, one service a week.
- 20:25The only one she can get to is a youth service.
- 20:28We have a youth service because we have beautiful volunteers and
- 20:31leaders in this place who sacrificed their their time,
- 20:34their talent, their money. Teenagers are expensive men.
- 20:40They sacrificed it. The only reason we have an
- 20:43established youth group is because someone over here has
- 20:46done the legal leg work to make sure that we're allowed to.
- 20:50Someone's organized blue cards, someone's made phone calls,
- 20:53someone's organized training, someone has actually trained it.
- 20:57We are a body, we are many members, and we get to
- 21:02celebrate. When God is actively moving in
- 21:05our church, it follows us. It follows us, those who believe
- 21:14Holy Spirit moved upon us. We speak in other languages.
- 21:20Demons are cast out in Jesus name.
- 21:23They are. We lay hands on the sick and
- 21:26they do recover. And no matter what kind of
- 21:29poison is thrown at us, we remain.
- 21:32Give yourself the pat on the back and go.
- 21:33I'm nailing this mission thing. I'm totally supporting and
- 21:36upholding God's house. Well done you these things
- 21:42follow us. It says if one member if sorry,
- 21:47if one member of the body suffers, all of the other
- 21:50members suffer with it. And if one member is honoured,
- 21:54all the members rejoice in it with it.
- 21:58We are one body of believers partners.
- 22:03So here's a question for you. Are you partnered with God
- 22:08Mission? Do you uphold and support the
- 22:15local church? Jesus calls it his bride.
- 22:23He loves his place. And yes, it's flawed.
- 22:26It's run by humans. Of course there's going to be
- 22:29flawed. But God moves in and through his
- 22:32local church and he loves it. Are you a supporter?
- 22:37Are you partnered here? Do these signs and wonders?
- 22:42Do they follow you because you're partnered and are
- 22:45supporting this place? I often hear people leave church
- 22:58because they're offended and out will come out of their mouths.
- 23:02The church hurt me. There's a lot of things that
- 23:05people have to say about how the hurt church hurt them.
- 23:09You know what I don't hear very often is anyone in a repentant
- 23:16reflective moment going, wow, I hurt the church.
- 23:23Paul did normal part of his Christian life would often
- 23:31reflect and go wow, I really did some damage there murdering
- 23:36threats, actually murdering Christians and God had a moment
- 23:43and just put his hands on him and goes I love the passion, but
- 23:46you're off you're off. I just need to bring you into
- 23:51alignment. I need to bring you into truth
- 23:54because my heart's for this. I'm in this and if you are
- 23:59fighting in opposition. God's church, you're actually
- 24:06fighting in opposition with what God is trying to do.
- 24:11Take everything else off the table and just have you and God
- 24:14in here for a moment. What does he say?
- 24:22He loves this place. He's for it.
- 24:27The local church are you? Does your mission uphold and
- 24:32support the local church? Paul's statement actually in one
- 24:36Timothy 112 to 13. He says in my insolence I
- 24:40persecuted his people, but God had mercy on me because I did it
- 24:45in ignorance and unbelief. Question 3 And me as if you want
- 24:52to come join me, that'd be great.
- 24:56What follows you? What follows you in Matthew 716?
- 25:08It says you will know them by their fruit, what they produce.
- 25:16Time is a great revealer. It's a lousy healer, but it is a
- 25:22good revealer. What are you actually about?
- 25:29What follows you? Chaos, conflict, trauma, gossip,
- 25:42drama, rage or violence. The latest conspiracy theory.
- 25:51You know what I don't see in conspiracy theories?
- 25:59I don't see any faith. I don't see any faith.
- 26:05I see it fueled by fear, sowing seeds of distrust, but I don't
- 26:15see faith. Proverbs 31 says that she laughs
- 26:19for fear of her future. She's back on track, going to be
- 26:25over here, come and speak about the things that are important.
- 26:29I know you think that this matter is so important and
- 26:32everyone should know, is it going to be fruitful?
- 26:36Is it going to lead people to Jesus?
- 26:38Just come back. You might think it's so
- 26:42important. The disciples got this mixed up.
- 26:44They're like, this is so important.
- 26:46And Jesus goes, oh, just come back to what's important, to
- 26:52what's going to bring life to what's going to bring hope to
- 26:55what's going to restore to what's going to deliver, to
- 26:58what's going to pour out my love.
- 27:00You will find identity and confidence when you're centered
- 27:06in Jesus. What are you actually about?
- 27:12What do people read on you? What follows you is a testimony
- 27:21of the goodness of Jesus. Do disciples follow you?
- 27:25Are we discipling people? Does His love and grace follow
- 27:30you? I pray I walk in it.
- 27:34His favor. Provision, peace, sound mind,
- 27:43miracles, healing, deliverance, freedom, authority, it's all
- 27:57available to you and it's found in Jesus alone.
- 28:06It's found because of what He did.
- 28:10It's found because of His great love.
- 28:15Summing up, when I think of mission, there's a verse that I
- 28:21always come back to you that always encourages me.
- 28:23It always locates my why, and it's in one Corinthians 924 to
- 28:2926 and it says, don't you realize that in a race everyone
- 28:35runs, but only one person gets the prize?
- 28:38So run to win. All athletes are disciplined in
- 28:43their training. They do it to win a prize that's
- 28:47going to fade away, but we do it for an eternal price.
- 28:53So I've run with purpose in every step.
- 29:00Can we even begin to comprehend what lays before us?
- 29:06Are our minds set on the Kingdom of God?
- 29:10On eternity? Eternity does not start when you
- 29:16die. Eternity starts right now.
- 29:23If you've got a line, let's imagine that this is the line of
- 29:27your life, right? It starts here, continues to go
- 29:31there. Your death might be here.
- 29:35It doesn't stop when you die. You're not going to have a
- 29:38moment where you go to sleep and don't wake up.
- 29:41There is an eternity to look forward to with Jesus if you
- 29:46just want to choose Him back. Do you know how much He loves
- 29:50you? John 316 said He loved you so
- 29:54much. God loved you so much that He
- 29:57gave His only begotten Son that if He would just believe in Him,
- 30:05then you're not going to perish. You will experience that eternal
- 30:09hope. You will experience that eternal
- 30:12joy. You will experience purification
- 30:16where you feel clean, where you feel whole, where you are
- 30:20restored. Nothing will do it for you like
- 30:25Jesus.
