- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. For those of you that are
- 0:18watching the video version of this podcast, you might say,
- 0:22Brian, you are not in your office.
- 0:23Where in the world are you? Well, today was a particularly
- 0:26cold day, and so I actually needed to move over to a
- 0:31different room at the church because my office was a little
- 0:34too cold. And so I'm excited to be
- 0:37studying Psalm 1/19 with you today.
- 0:39We are in Psalm 119 versus 81 through 8881 through 88, and we
- 0:46are in the section that all of the verses start with the Hebrew
- 0:50letter cough, cough or calf. The kaftarim is one of the
- 0:56people in one of the people groups in the Bible.
- 1:00And so the calf letter is what this section starts with Psalm
- 1:05119. It's God's Word A-Z, if you
- 1:08will, and through the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet.
- 1:12And so today we're going to be looking at these verses that
- 1:16specifically highlight the fact that God's Word requires
- 1:20patience. God's Word requires patience.
- 1:24Let's read through, and I think you'll see this pretty instantly
- 1:27as we get into the passage. Today I long for your salvation.
- 1:32I put my hope in your word. My eyes grow weary, looking for
- 1:37what you have promised. I ask, when will you comfort me?
- 1:41Though I've become like a wineskin dried by smoke, I do
- 1:45not forget your statutes. How many days must your servant
- 1:50wait? When will you execute judgement
- 1:53on my persecutors? The arrogant have dug pits for
- 1:56me. They violate your instruction.
- 1:59All your commands are true. People persecute me with lies.
- 2:04Help me. They almost ended my life on
- 2:08earth. But I did not abandon your
- 2:11precepts. Give me life in accordance with
- 2:14Your faithful love, and I will obey the decree you have spoken.
- 2:21So here, as the psalmist is writing in this portion of Psalm
- 2:25119, you can hear the desperate need that they have for God to
- 2:31act because He's not currently acting.
- 2:35Man, I think about my life. How many times have I prayed for
- 2:39something and not seen it come to pass for day after day, week
- 2:45after week, sometimes even month after month or year over year?
- 2:50In those times of waiting when patience is needed, is God
- 2:54absent? Has He forgotten, as Psalm 73
- 2:58told us? Has He forgotten to be good?
- 3:00And the simple answer is no. The truth is we want things
- 3:04instantaneously. We want microwave prayers, we
- 3:08want Burger King. Have it your way Christianity,
- 3:11in which our every need gets met instantaneously, where every
- 3:16prayer request is fits perfectly within the will of God.
- 3:21And so we get everything that we want.
- 3:24But the truth is, the word of God is something that requires
- 3:29our patience. Even the illustrations that we
- 3:32hear of God's word in scripture would show us this.
- 3:36I think I mentioned last episode or a couple episodes ago James
- 3:40chapter 1 where James tells the believers scattered all across
- 3:44the Roman Empire that the word of God is like a seed that is
- 3:49planted and it grows and it brings spiritual life and it
- 3:54eventually results in fruit coming out of our life.
- 3:59Sometimes fruit is talked about like new people that we bring to
- 4:03faith in the Lord. More often, fruit is talked
- 4:06about as the way that we live our life as a result of being
- 4:12indwelt and controlled by the Holy Spirit, that the Holy
- 4:16Spirit makes us be loving, the Holy Spirit brings us peace, the
- 4:20Holy Spirit leads us to self-control and so we
- 4:23experience fruit. But I don't know how much
- 4:27gardening I've really done in my life, but I've seen some gardens
- 4:31and I've seen some a big trees coming from Colorado, there's
- 4:36tons of beautiful Evergreen trees, especially during this,
- 4:41you know, December season. But the thing about trees, the
- 4:45thing about fruit and and plant planting is that it does not
- 4:51happen instantaneously. Instead, you plant one day and
- 4:56you water and you water and you wait and you weed.
- 5:02And then hopefully eventually you begin to see a small sprout
- 5:07that comes up and you keep on watering and you keep on giving
- 5:13it the nutrients and soil and sunlight that it needs.
- 5:17And one day that little seed that you planted becomes
- 5:21something great. The same is true for the Word of
- 5:24God. In my life, I grew up learning
- 5:29the Word of God, memorizing it from the time I was probably 5
- 5:34or 6 years old. And as I memorized the word of
- 5:37God, there were things that I learned at 5 or at 10 or 15 that
- 5:43frankly just now at 28, I'm starting to get a handle on.
- 5:48There's things I'm just starting to see, oh, this is how I adopt
- 5:53this into my life or I am just now understanding this truly for
- 5:58the first time. And you might ask, all right, I
- 6:03get it. I got to wait for God's Word.
- 6:05It's going to take a while to to, you know, bring about some
- 6:09results. What am I supposed to think
- 6:11about this? Like, what do I do?
- 6:12Well, let's look at these verses and see what did this look like
- 6:17in the life of the psalmist. He had God's word.
- 6:21He talks a lot about it. Every verse here deals with it.
- 6:24And So what did that look like in his life?
- 6:27Why did he need to be patient? What was he patient for?
- 6:31And then what should it tell us to give it time to allow the
- 6:35Word of God to do what it needs to do?
- 6:38Let's begin in verse #81 says I long for your salvation.
- 6:42I put my hope in your Word. When we think about the ultimate
- 6:46salvation of our souls, it is not instantaneous.
- 6:49The the moment that I accepted Christ as my Savior was not the
- 6:53moment when I became fully like Jesus in my words and thoughts
- 6:57and actions. I did not receive a glorified
- 7:00body. I was not instantly taken up
- 7:03into the the physical presence of Jesus when I accepted the
- 7:08Lord. Even my eternal salvation is
- 7:11something that I have to wait for so you can think about that
- 7:16within your life that in the times when Satan wants you to
- 7:19abandon ship when he wants you to walk away from a lifelong
- 7:25commitment to follow and obey Jesus and and he'll often
- 7:29baptize it as. Listen, you don't have to become
- 7:32an atheist. You just don't really have to
- 7:34care about the word of God. You don't have to care about
- 7:37your church family. You don't have to care about
- 7:41evangelism. You can just live your life,
- 7:44make your money, have fun, participate in your hobbies,
- 7:48spend time with people you want to spend time with.
- 7:51But don't love what God loves. Don't pursue Jesus and obeying
- 7:57Him above everything. The times when Satan wants to
- 8:01trick you and tell you that that's a better way to live your
- 8:04life, know that he is wrong and that though you go through
- 8:08hardship, God's salvation is there for you in a real and a
- 8:12full way. Wait for it.
- 8:14Wait for that day when you receive your new heavenly body
- 8:22like that. That Jesus has verse #82 He
- 8:25says, My eyes grow weary looking for what you have promised.
- 8:29I ask, when will you comfort me? We have to wait in life often
- 8:35for God to comfort us. Man, I, I think, let me see how
- 8:40many minutes I'm, I'm 8 1/2 minutes into this podcast today.
- 8:44I'll be, I'll be a little vulnerable with you guys there.
- 8:48There was a situation at my church last year that just
- 8:51absolutely broke my heart. I, I spent time, tons of time
- 8:57praying to the Lord crying out to him.
- 9:01I lost hours of sleep over it and it was a really, really hard
- 9:06time. And frankly, it wasn't till this
- 9:09past Saturday that I actually heard some news that totally
- 9:14affirmed, hey, all of this like heartache and hurt that you have
- 9:20had over the course of, of over a year.
- 9:24Realize that you were pursuing Jesus, that it was seen that it
- 9:30was recognized and that God loves you and he cares about you
- 9:34and you are within his will, even when it hurts.
- 9:39I if it was my decision, I would say, OK, Brian is going to make
- 9:44this decision on a Tuesday and he's going to get comfort on a
- 9:47Wednesday. But that's not how God works.
- 9:51And I'm so thankful that God's timeline isn't my timeline
- 9:55because it actually it means more now.
- 9:57I feel the the comfort and the joy now in a much bigger way
- 10:02than I would have. I was able to like glorify the
- 10:06Lord and go, yeah, God, that had to have been you because I
- 10:09couldn't have foreseen everything that would take
- 10:12place. You were the one that saw and so
- 10:16God brings comfort, but he brings it in his time.
- 10:19For many of you, you might have lost a loved 1.
- 10:22You may have had a really difficult family situation like
- 10:26a divorce, like a sibling or a kid or grandkid that's kind of
- 10:33cut you out of their life and and they don't want you around
- 10:37and you might be looking for comfort from the Lord.
- 10:40Can I tell you, wait for that comfort?
- 10:42It doesn't mean that he's not good.
- 10:43He just might be waiting for the perfect time to bring you
- 10:48comfort. And if you don't receive comfort
- 10:50in the here and now on this earth, I promise you, you will
- 10:54receive eternal comfort from our heavenly Father when you are
- 10:58reunited with Jesus. The comfort is promised and so
- 11:01you can trust it here. The psalmist says my eyes grow
- 11:06weary. I encourage you when your eyes
- 11:09grow weary, take some sleep, find rest in what Jesus has done
- 11:15here. These weary eyes, this this
- 11:17would even include being teary that someone goes, I, I have no
- 11:22tears left to cry. Can I encourage you re I'm I'm
- 11:29going to mix a little bit of the, the, the physical remedy
- 11:32and the spiritual remedy here. Get rehydrated so you can cry
- 11:36some more. Take some rest so that you are
- 11:40able to open your eyes with fresh vision.
- 11:42Well, what is the rest that we find?
- 11:45It's in knowing that our God is good, that He's trustworthy,
- 11:49that He's faithful, that He sees and He knows and He cares.
- 11:53And He will not leave you forever uncomforted.
- 11:57You need to refresh yourself through the water of life,
- 12:00through the word of God, through recognizing who Jesus is and
- 12:03what he accomplished in reconciliation and in making US1
- 12:09with himself and now one with God.
- 12:12And so we can draw strength from that relationship and we can
- 12:15find comfort in those times. Verse 83 says, though I've
- 12:19become like a wine wineskin dried by smoke, I do not forget
- 12:24your statutes. He says when you are so tired
- 12:28and worn out and you're just at the end of yourself here, like a
- 12:34wineskin dried by smoke, this would be very brittle and easy
- 12:39to break when you're on your last leg.
- 12:42I want you to know that God still cares about you and I want
- 12:45you to know that you can rely on the word.
- 12:48Do not forget the Word of God and his instruction and his love
- 12:52and the stories of His victory when you have reached the
- 12:55absolute end of yourself. As a as a pastor, I say this.
- 13:02I say this with some trepidation because I know that everyone
- 13:05goes through trials and hardships in life.
- 13:09Frankly, this year I've, I've felt spiritual battling from
- 13:15Satan and, and his demons and work in a way that I've never
- 13:21felt before in my life, or at least that I've not recognized
- 13:24before in my life. And there have been several
- 13:27times when I've gone K God, am I supposed to be here?
- 13:31Am I supposed to do this? Do you want me to just like go
- 13:34and be out of church, be an encouragement to someone else,
- 13:37you know, work a secular job, be able to, you know, provide for
- 13:41my family in that way, like God, Is that what you want me to do?
- 13:45And I'm thankful that as I've continued to just try to rely on
- 13:49the Lord, it, it's not that I have some great strength to like
- 13:52buck up and be like, no, I, I'm, I'm strong enough and I can go
- 13:56through all sorts of hardships. Frankly, I'm I'm just not that
- 14:00I'm I'm deeply a people person. My, you know, go to is is
- 14:06happiness and enjoy. And so when I encounter hard
- 14:10times, I feel like that wineskin dried by smoke that it's like,
- 14:14OK, one more thing goes wrong and I'm I'm just toast.
- 14:16You know how long I got to hang up my skates at that point, but
- 14:20I'm thankful that through not anything I've done, just trying
- 14:25to still rely on the Lord that I found his strength again and
- 14:28again. Verse 84, he says how many days
- 14:30must your servant wait? When will you execute judgment
- 14:33on my persecutors? We wait on the Word of God
- 14:36because we know that a day of justice is coming.
- 14:39And I was just listening through 2nd Thessalonians 1 again, where
- 14:45the apostle Paul writing to the church at Thessalonica, they had
- 14:48undergone tons of persecution from people.
- 14:50And Paul reminds them that the hardships that they were going
- 14:54through and the people that were harming them, that God would
- 14:57bring justice on those individuals.
- 14:59And so Paul encourages the Thessalonicans, keep going
- 15:02because God is glorified in you, because God wants to glorify you
- 15:07and you will be ultimately vindicated for all eternity.
- 15:12And so we are going through hardships with other people and
- 15:15all of us have times where we fail and we sin.
- 15:18We are selfish. We said things that we shouldn't
- 15:21have said. We did things that we shouldn't
- 15:23have done. And so we ought to apologize to
- 15:25others. But there are genuinely times
- 15:27when people are just operating in in the same way that Satan
- 15:32would want them to in unforgiveness and and cruelty.
- 15:36I can think of some of my friends at a church in downtown
- 15:39Baltimore that there's an incredibly political
- 15:46representative of the city in there that has lobbied many
- 15:52verbal attacks against that church.
- 15:56And that church has done incredible things for the city
- 16:00of Baltimore. And it's just wholly undo that
- 16:06they would be persecuted by this elected representative.
- 16:10And I know that that person, unless they turn to Christ in
- 16:14faith, they are going to experience judgment.
- 16:18And on that day where Jesus returns, there will be
- 16:22vindication for that church. And so I'm thankful that that's
- 16:26promised. As I've mentioned before, our
- 16:29goal though is not as as humans in the here and now, as
- 16:33Christians, believers in Jesus, forgiven and redeemed.
- 16:36We should want our enemies to be turned into friends through
- 16:41accepting the gospel. But if they don't do that, then
- 16:44know that justice will be poured out on them for their
- 16:48wickedness. And if they become our friends,
- 16:52it's not that their sins were unpunished.
- 16:55Jesus was punished for those sins.
- 16:58Continuing now in verse 85, the arrogant have dug pits for me
- 17:01like they're they're trying to trap the psalmist.
- 17:04He says they violate your instruction.
- 17:06Sometimes you can see things going bad for you and you can
- 17:09see the traps that people are laying out for you.
- 17:11Can I encourage you rely on the word of God to say it doesn't
- 17:15matter what people plan against me.
- 17:16I know what my God's plans for me are and so I can rest in
- 17:21them. I can, if you will, I can even
- 17:23walk through the valley of the shadow of death and not fear any
- 17:28evil because God is with me. So rely on the word of God.
- 17:33Even when you see hardships happening, when you see people
- 17:36that do not love you and do not appreciate you and maybe don't
- 17:39even want you around. You can rely on God's word and
- 17:43you can wait on him. Verse 86, All your commands are
- 17:46true. People persecute me with lies.
- 17:49Help me. You can rely on God's word.
- 17:51You can wait on God's word because you believe that the
- 17:55truth will eventually come out. And I love there's a verse in I
- 18:00believe it's Deuteronomy. It could be Numbers that says be
- 18:04sure your sin will find you out. Be sure your sin will find you
- 18:09out. And that can be scary if you are
- 18:13living your life in sin. It can be such a comfort when
- 18:17you are walking with the Lord and you go, I know what the
- 18:20truth is. And it doesn't really matter
- 18:22what people think about lies when I know what reality is,
- 18:27when I know the truth. And so you can believe that
- 18:30God's Word will bring the truth to light and you will have
- 18:34vindication as you walk in the truth.
- 18:38Verse 87 They almost ended my life on earth, but I did not
- 18:41abandon your precepts. You can rely on the Word of God
- 18:44and wait on the Word of God to bring results even when you go
- 18:49through the hardest times of life.
- 18:52Hopefully most of you will never be be sought to be killed by
- 18:56another human being, but many less go through sicknesses or
- 19:01kind of near death experiences. And I love that God is the one
- 19:07that he says when our time on earth is up and until then we
- 19:11are immortal. And so you can rely and you can
- 19:14wait on God's word to say God, I know I'm going to encounter, you
- 19:18know, even some health scares. We've got many people at our
- 19:21church even that battle cancer and and friends of people in our
- 19:24church that are battling cancer. And in those moments when it can
- 19:28be so easy to fully despair, can I encourage you to have a a
- 19:33patience, a reliance on the Lord that you're able to say, God, if
- 19:38this is my time, then thank you that I'm returning to you.
- 19:42Thank you that I get to see Jesus and all my loved ones that
- 19:45have gone before. But God, you are the one that
- 19:49even if the doctors don't think I have a great shot, unless you
- 19:54say it's time for me to go, I'm I'm still going to keep on
- 19:58kicking. I'm going to keep on living for
- 20:00you. And so rely on God and have
- 20:03faith that when it's your time to go, it's good you are
- 20:07returning to him. But until that time, he's still
- 20:10got work for you to do. And so you will do it.
- 20:12Then the the section ends. Give me life in accordance with
- 20:16your faithful love, and I will obey the decree you have spoken.
- 20:22You can wait on God to give you life.
- 20:25That fullness, that joy, that purpose, it is found in the
- 20:29Lord. And right now, if you feel
- 20:32purposeless, if you feel aimless, if you don't feel like
- 20:34you have that joy, pray. Ask God to give that to you.
- 20:39It may take some time. It may take days or weeks or
- 20:42months, sometimes even years. But I promise you that God's
- 20:47promise is that He gives life and that He gives it more
- 20:50abundantly. It may be that you need to talk
- 20:52with someone, whether that could be a counselor or a therapist,
- 20:56Maybe if there's some things in your mind that you're just not
- 20:59thinking through the process correctly.
- 21:01Certainly as a pastor, I'd love to talk to you and I would love
- 21:05to encourage you about what God has for your life, especially if
- 21:08you're someone that's here at Tabernacle.
- 21:11You might not necessarily think I don't know if Brian like knows
- 21:15knows me, but I I see you. I see the way that you live and
- 21:21and interact and serve and worship.
- 21:24I see the way that people love you and interact with you, maybe
- 21:29even sometimes more than you see it yourself.
- 21:32And so I want to be an encouragement and I hope to you,
- 21:36even as your pastor. Well, much, much more could be
- 21:40said about waiting on the Lord, waiting on His word, but I hope
- 21:44that all of these verses in the calf section have been an
- 21:50encouragement to you. Wait on the Lord.
- 21:53Isaiah 40, I think it's Isaiah 40, I think it's 40 and verse 31
- 22:00or thereabouts. They that weighed upon the Lord
- 22:02shall renew their strength. They shall mount up with wings
- 22:06like eagles. They will run and not be weary.
- 22:09They will walk and not faint. Wait on the Lord and find His
- 22:15strength for today. Thanks for tuning in.
- 22:18See you next episode.
