- 1:11four from Hollywood. It's time now for Johnny Deller. I'll take that wise
- 1:18guy Frankie Scanlon, Yeah, yeah, yeah, I'll tell him. What
- 1:23was that you yelling the phone? You heard it? I had just said,
- 1:26Johnny Dollar, I told you a long time back. I wasn't Hillary
- 1:29Feuch. You told me a lot of things. If I'm gonna see constatant,
- 1:32try him out. Just open the door and walk right in. I'm
- 1:34not behind you, see hello, Sam, John Johnny, what's he doing
- 1:42it? Frankie? You mean decision fut out of here? You had the
- 1:48man, Frankie blow No, shut up, Johnny, I won't bother shaking
- 1:55hand. He would try to put me in jail the last time, Wen
- 2:05tonight and every weekday night Bob Bailey in the Transcribed Adventures of the Man with
- 2:08the Action Packed Expense Account, America's Fabulous Freelance Insurance Investigator as truly Johnny Dollar.
- 2:29Expense account submitted by Special Investigator Johnny Dollar. Location, Miami Beach two,
- 2:34the Universal Adjustment Bureau, five eighteen Spear Boulevard, Hertford, Connecticut.
- 2:38The following is an accounting of expenditures during my investigation of the Tears of Night
- 2:42Matter. I'm gonna sit down her behind my desk and have a drink.
- 2:50Johnny, Well, I'm having and I'm gonna ask you a question. Save
- 2:53your breath. I'll answer it anyhow, Sam, Sam Costigan said, it's
- 3:00behind the big mahogany desk, glaring at me with a pair of small pig
- 3:02eyes half hidden in a beefy red face. Both hands rested out in front
- 3:07of them flats. I told them how I'd come to Miami Beach to look
- 3:10into an insurance claim made by a last windover. How I'd been in the
- 3:14office of Hillary Fuchs, her business manager, when Frank Scanlon had walked in
- 3:17mistaken me for Fuchs waved a gun under my nose and insisted I come with
- 3:21him to see Costagan. So here I was, and so what about it?
- 3:24Eh? Help your show, Johnny. Wow, that's a pretty nice
- 3:29joint. Sam. How long have you been in business in Florida? Oh?
- 3:32About two years? How's the gross? It was as good as running
- 3:36bear in Chicago. But tim days are going forever. I make all right.
- 3:38Took crap tables to rule that tables, a couple of games, the
- 3:42bar and restaurant break it up even, and I got a big careful yeah
- 3:46cheer that is. You seem to have enough muscle outside and around to keep
- 3:53you comfy and cozy. Punks, all of them. Look at that Frankie
- 3:57Scanlon. I dragged you over here, crazy, But he's the best of
- 4:00the lot, best I can get Nowaday. He's not a good muscle living
- 4:03the business. You could retire, Yeah, I might do that one of
- 4:06these days. No, tell me about your hook up with this wind over
- 4:12there man, no hook up, Sam. She claimed benefits in her husband's
- 4:15life insurance. The claim should have been made two years ago. I investigated.
- 4:18It's okay, yeah, screwball in some ways. She's all right,
- 4:24Oh maybe it's good. Here. Here is this future guy. I wanted
- 4:27him to handle some business with hers, but maybe you can handle it.
- 4:32Yeah, here was his before. Oh it's a little bit of necklace,
- 4:36call her tears a night. It's with a big hunk of cash. He's
- 4:41fort diamonds are good stuff. Your friend, miss window Over left it here
- 4:44a week or so ago when she wanted her plunge at to rule that table.
- 4:47Anything the same. It's a very pretty necklace, Sam. Okay,
- 4:54we both know she's screwing a widow with a lot of dough and a boyfriend
- 4:57named Teddy Teddy Dave, he paints well. She sent me a check for
- 5:03the five gs she lost that night, and I wanted Fuchs to take his
- 5:05thing back to her. But now I got you on the stead, I
- 5:08want you to take it to her. How about it? Is that all?
- 5:12It's so? I got my dose? She gets her tis a night
- 5:15back. I couldn't trust any of my punks with him. I don't like
- 5:17to be seen in public. So you just take it back. It's very
- 5:20simple. Wow, they'll ever go in the States. Why not? You
- 5:27can act, but you can't lie. You just can't lie at all.
- 5:30And it takes a good lie to be a good acting. Now, as
- 5:32you've told me, how simple it is, Suppose you give me the unexpurgated
- 5:36sequel. All right, saw a check? Bun stop it, Sam.
- 5:40She can't issue a check without a counter signature by Hillary Fuchs. He has
- 5:44an issue one check on her accountants. He took it over ten days ago.
- 5:47So if this thing is hers, explain it all to me. Well,
- 5:49you the way it is. I want another drink. Yeah, you're
- 5:57right, Johnny, I went on a check. There's one to over call
- 5:59me a couple of hours ago and set up. I didn't have her sing
- 6:01back to her and I she'd call a lot of cops and come out and
- 6:03tears and join the punt. She sounded like she'd do it too. I
- 6:06mean, well, you mutter, you can't tell what she'll do. Well,
- 6:11I'm gone the next scroy you know, not so screwy. If she
- 6:14dropped five thousand and left that and now she gets it back for nothing.
- 6:16I just want to get it off my hands. She came out here with
- 6:20a cop I'd be closed for the season and I'm getting old. You know
- 6:25where she lives. I was there earlier tonight. Yeah, take the ice
- 6:28store and I'll chuck it out to experience. Uh, then you can grab
- 6:30a cab back and come on back out here, and I'll say you have
- 6:32a good time on the house, how about it. I'll take it to
- 6:35her, but I won't come back here. Sam, oh Skylon freey them
- 6:40guys, and they worry you do well. I don't believe your last stor
- 6:45either. The only thing I believe is that this is missus Windover's necklace.
- 6:49So I'll take it to her. Sam, Yeah, you better get someone
- 6:57beside feey at that table after this. You're tell him me, You tell
- 7:00him me. He was mopping his face when I closed the door and went
- 7:08downstairs. By that time, the customers had started to roll in, young
- 7:13fresh faced men with sallow eyes and quick movements, anxious to step up to
- 7:16the tables and lose money. Women in strapless dresses anxious to show off there
- 7:20and knewest suntans and help whatever man they were with lose money, old men,
- 7:25old women dressed to the teeth. It was a sickle scene from a
- 7:29sickle play expense account atum four six dollars cab fare from Sam Costigan's gambling club
- 7:34to at least went over his apartment. Oh, Teddy, I thought you'd
- 7:44never get here. The performance begins at ten o'clock, and you know how
- 7:46the traffic is, and if we're going to have a bite do eat.
- 7:50You aren't Teddy at all? Are you? I'm afraid not, missus winover?
- 7:55Where's Teddy? I don't know? Oh what are you looking at your
- 8:01throats? Really, mister Dollar, Johnny Dollar, I met you in Hillary
- 8:05Fuch's office. We talked here later on, remember, of course I remember.
- 8:11Well, really, mister Dollar, I'm only waiting for Teddy to come
- 8:15by so we can make the first show at the Plaza a better telephone,
- 8:18don't you think? Yes, you do that. Good night, mister die.
- 8:24The white erm in cape she was wearing, and the black strapless thing
- 8:28needed a final touch. She had it a diamond necklace. In fact,
- 8:33the Tears of Night, the one I had in my pocket was hanging around
- 8:37her lovely neck. Downstairs, in the good light of the lobby, I
- 8:41snapped open the necklace case. Martuus had read house of Jewelry, a gloomy
- 8:45word with a gloomy address. The sign on the window of the House of
- 8:48Mortuus gave a phone number in case of emergency. I had them six ten
- 8:52cents one phone call about my emergency. I made it vague to mister Mortus
- 8:56that thousands of people might die before six o'clock in the morning unless I could
- 9:00talk to someone about a piece of jewelry. It went over idam seven fifty
- 9:03cents Camfair to the Sandy Beach Hotel on the less expensive side of Miami Beach.
- 9:09You find me a bit indisposed, mister Dollar. But on the phone
- 9:11you said it was a matter of jewelry. Therefore, Hannibal Mortuus is at
- 9:15your service now, then, sir, what is so urgent? I came
- 9:16to ask you about a diamond necklace. I found your name stamped on the
- 9:20inside of the case. House of Mortuous, a most respected name in diamond
- 9:24as well as all the napidary arts, most respected find jewels, and the
- 9:26name mortuis are oh. I have to beg your pardon. Continue, mister
- 9:31Dollar. I want you to take a look at this, and how,
- 9:37sir, do you come in possession of the tears of night? A man
- 9:39named Sam Carstagan, who runs a gambling club. He asked me to deliver
- 9:43it to a lady named Alice Wendover, you know her, her lovely body
- 9:46propelled by a ridiculous mind. This matter you have just described bears me out
- 9:52for shame. Such conduct a gambling house. The tears of Night are pawn
- 9:56there and this is the real thing. It isn't funny, mister Dollar.
- 10:00I'm a gemologist the House of Mortius. Of course, it's real. Take
- 10:03a good look. When an artist creates a dazzling thing of beauty such as
- 10:07this, would he be so unlikely to forget the time, the patience,
- 10:11the agony of his creation? Eh see? Yeah, look here under the
- 10:15light. Four weeks, mister Dollar, four weeks working night and day just
- 10:18to drill that anchor for a simple molding. But ah see how each stone
- 10:22is careful and mounted to capture every single pinpoint of light. Beautiful, beautiful,
- 10:28an incomparable masterpiece for the money. Well, I'm just curious, mister
- 10:33watchfus how much money? About ten thousand dollars on the wholesale market wanted?
- 10:37Noah went over? Pay for it twenty five thousand. I saw another one
- 10:41just like it tonight. Ridiculous. The finest workman, at best would only
- 10:46create a crude resemblance. This kind of artistry demands an artist, mister Dollar,
- 10:52and I am that artist. But it could get by a copy of
- 10:56it to the unpracticed eye, to the layman, perhaps, yes, in
- 11:00anguish Erba Latin. Yeah, well, all I know is agricola a snake
- 11:05in the grass. Something wrong mildly puts something wrong? Yes, well,
- 11:11how much do I owe you for your time, mister montag Nothing? Nothing
- 11:15with my pleasure, you know. Glancing at that again reassures me of the
- 11:18value and dignity of my work anywhere It is magnificent. But I do a
- 11:24grow. You say something is wrong? What missus went over? You say
- 11:28you met her? You say veral times she haven't mentioned anything to you about
- 11:31a curse. No, I can't say that she did. May I ask
- 11:37you a question? Yes? Sure? Are you a friend of hers?
- 11:41In a way? Off and on? I know what you mean. One
- 11:46is never quite certain with missus wendover whether one will be recognized or not?
- 11:50Is one? It's late? Yeah, well I'm just leaving. No,
- 11:54No, you misread me, sir. I wasn't speaking of my own comfort.
- 11:56I noticed the fog is coming. Is wock outside? This is a
- 12:01lonely area. That is a valuable object. Are you armed? No?
- 12:05If you are the talk concern for the safety of that piece. I had
- 12:07a small safe in my rooms. You may have the key if you'd get
- 12:11to leave it overnight. I'll take it with me. Ye, just as
- 12:15well, probably suggestion only you will leave satisfied. I trust mister Dollar.
- 12:20Oh yes, thank you, mister Mortus, My pleasure, mister Dollar.
- 12:26Oh remember omnia, multuous, bonum vocalist, all speak well, immtuous.
- 12:33The puns had a pun good evening downstairs in the dismal lobby of the Sandy
- 12:41Beach Hotel. I looked out beyond the dirty glass windows to discover that the
- 12:45fog had indeed come in and surrounded the area with a choking darkness. The
- 12:48concern of mister Mortuus for his artistic creation told me to bang in the night
- 12:52bell and asked the night clerk for some wrapping paper and fifty cents worth of
- 12:54stamps expensive cant adam eate adam nine phone call for a care Just before it
- 13:01arrived, I dropped the Tears of Night addressed to myself at my hotel in
- 13:03the lobby mailbox. I don't think the two hoodlums waiting outside saw me do
- 13:07it. I didn't think they saw me at all, but they followed my
- 13:11cab when it took me back to my hotel. Johnny Dollar, your number
- 13:33is ringing, mister Dollar. Oh thanks, Oh, this is Johnny Dollar
- 13:39Dollar. I thought you went back to Hartford. I meant to, but
- 13:43I got tired of it. Missus Wendover's business affairs again. Can you come
- 13:46over to my hotel right away? It's in the morning, I know it.
- 13:50Well. Can't you grab a cab and come over here? Hardly?
- 13:54Why not? A couple of Sam Costigan's boys followed me here. I think
- 13:58they might like to do a little target practice on me. Oh. Expense
- 14:09accounts submitted by Special Investigator Johnny Dollar two the Universal Adjustment Bureau, five eighteen
- 14:15Spear Boulevard, Hartford, Connecticut. The following is an accounting of expenditures during
- 14:18my investigation of the Tears of night. Matter expenses continued itams ten and eleven
- 14:28ten dollars scotch and soda, plus a picture of icing glasses. I had
- 14:31them filled, chill and waiting. When Hilary Fuchs knocked on the door of
- 14:33my rope. His eyes were still puffy with sleep, and he had a
- 14:37trench coat thrown over his pajamas. What's this all about, Johnny, he
- 14:41said, Missus Wendover, somebody followed you. What I want you to tell
- 14:45me? What you can about the tears of night? The tears of what?
- 14:48Tiers of night? A piece of jewelry owned by Missus Wendover, a
- 14:50necklace four diamonds on black onyx silver chain. What the devil would I know
- 14:54about something like that in our accounts or bills or property. Your business manager,
- 15:00you must know something about it. I never heard of it. You
- 15:01better straighten me out. Try some of that. This is all too fast
- 15:11for me, Okay, I'll bring you up to date. I came here
- 15:13day before yesterday to investigate Missus Windover's claim as beneficiary of the death of her
- 15:18husband. She forgot to file it for two years. Are you explained why
- 15:22I bought that? It's a legitimate claim. But I didn't buy her story
- 15:26about being cursed, or I didn't buy your idea that she was on the
- 15:28verge of blowing a top. I'm not so sure. I'm just along for
- 15:31the ride. Well, you left me in your office last year. A
- 15:35little while after you left, a man named Frank Scanlon came in and stuck
- 15:37a gun at me and said, Sam Costigan wanted to see me. Costigan
- 15:41the gambler. Same Scanlon thought, I was you. He took me over
- 15:45to Costigan's place. What's this got to do with insurance? Nothing? But
- 15:48it has something to do with Missus Wendover. Costigan had a necklace the Tears
- 15:52of Night there, he said. Missus Wendover left it as a pawn a
- 15:56week or so ago. Oh, he told me, Missus Wendover called up
- 15:58a threatened to come out with policemen unless Costigan returned it. And as long
- 16:03as I was there, Costagan asked me to take it to her. I
- 16:06went over to her place, and what do you know, she was wearing
- 16:08the Tears a night. I don't get this. I don't have another drink
- 16:11me to do. I by the time I got there to her apartment,
- 16:15Missus Wendover hardly remembered my name or that we'd met in your office. She
- 16:18was waiting for her boyfriend to show up. Incidentally, his name's Teddy Davis.
- 16:22Is he after her money or what? Search me? I never met
- 16:26him? Well, I skipped out of there and looked up the jeweler who'd
- 16:29made the necklace, a man named Hannibal Mortuus. I heard him. He
- 16:32speaks Latin or something. That's the one he told me. The necklace I
- 16:34had was the real thing. Now, I want you to tell me who
- 16:38made up the one Missus Wendover was working. I don't know anything about it.
- 16:41Well, it had to be made up sometime within the last week,
- 16:45and you've been handling her business affairs. I don't know a thing about it,
- 16:48Johnny, all right, come here, take a look. Do you
- 16:52know anything about those two birds outside there. Well, one of them is
- 16:57a character named Pheeley. He works for Costant. The other one I saw
- 17:00at Constangance Club. They tail me from Mortuis's place. Probably been on me
- 17:04all night long since I picked up the necklace. Where is it now?
- 17:07I mailed it to myself from Mortuus's hotel. Who's two out there. You
- 17:12better call the police if you think they're after you. Oh. Nothing,
- 17:15I could tell the police. It would hold them up half a second.
- 17:18Mainly I wanted to ask you about all this before I went on with it.
- 17:21What do you mean go on with it? Go back to missus Wendover
- 17:23to Costigan, find out what's real and what isn't real. This isn't your
- 17:27line of duty. Why? Oh, I've been thinking about that. I
- 17:32don't know why. Maybe it's missus Wendover those eyes of hers and then talk
- 17:36about the curse. I got a feeling she needs help in this matter.
- 17:41Somehow she needs help. What can I do? Jenny, go to bed.
- 17:45I'll let you know what happens. Now, where's your car in the
- 17:48parking lot back of the hotel? Give me the keys, I'll use that.
- 17:51Hey, thank yourself at home, mister Fuchs go to bed here?
- 17:53Oh yeah, every now and then walk over and look out that window and
- 17:57have a drink. They'll think it's me, and that's a good thought for
- 18:00them they have. Okay, what else? Well if they start for the
- 18:03lobby called downstairs and have them sent up the house man and get the police.
- 18:07I don't think they will, but remember that, well, why would
- 18:08they still think I've got that piece of jewelry on me? We shook up
- 18:15another drink and I borrowed Fuchs's trench coat and left. I found his green
- 18:18Chevy without too much trouble, since I went too many cars out in the
- 18:21lot that time of morning. I looked at my watch and it set two
- 18:23thirty five. I drove around front, past the two hoodlums, still keeping
- 18:27up their silent vigilant, found a street that looked for Mida. Twenty minutes
- 18:30later, I was in the parking lot beside a Lad Windover's apartment building.
- 18:34It was still dark, still foggy, and too late, I found out
- 18:38too crowded somehow the pair of hoodlums were waiting for me after oil. Hey,
- 18:48this is him? Really got a match? Dollar? Toby? Esh,
- 18:52if you got a match? He's a dummy. Toby, don't answer,
- 18:57got a match dollar? What that dead yet? He's a dummy boy.
- 19:03You look like no dummy boy. You're near sighted? Take your hands
- 19:07off. He's a dummy, all right. Ain't your dollar? See Toby?
- 19:12I told him about you being near sighted, and he would answer it.
- 19:15He don't talk, don't want smart boy. Tell Toby how sorry you
- 19:18are about him being near sighted? Talk. I heard you talk before.
- 19:26I told you it was a dummy. Hey, tell me something, Dummy,
- 19:29all insurance guys like you, tell me? Ask you a question.
- 19:33He wants to know if all insurance guys are like you. I don't like
- 19:37him. He asked questions and he ain't told us nothing. Hey, maybe
- 19:41we find out something. We went to his pockets. Yeah, yeah,
- 19:45we're a dummy. He's got pockets, Ain't that right? Dummy? Hold
- 19:48him to me? All right, boys, you played the scene good,
- 19:52and I'll see what I can do for you. But I haven't got the
- 19:52necklace. Hey he talks, Yeah, yeah, you'll make him talk again,
- 20:00Kobe, don't make him talk too much. You know, if the
- 20:06stuff ain't on him, it's in his room. We can't pick it up
- 20:08anytime. That's it easy to be easy. Oh, he taught real nice,
- 20:18feely, but he don't say much. Hey, you think maybe he's
- 20:22tough? Could be? No, I wasn't, and I didn't feel like
- 20:27talking in that quiet little parking lot where the only noise was then pounding on
- 20:30me. I told him I didn't have the necklace anymore. But they didn't
- 20:33care about that. They wanted to find out the hard way, the hard
- 20:37way for me. I remember trying to wake up a couple of times.
- 20:47I dreamed I was driving along in a big Cadillac. Frank Scanlon was on
- 20:51one side, I mean Sam Costagan on the other. Animal Mortuus was in
- 20:53the front seat. He had his jeweler's glass out, looking at the tears
- 20:57of night. I tried to see who was behind the steering wheel, and
- 21:02I gave that up because the steering wheel was a Roulett wheel. Then we
- 21:04had a blowout and the whole car vanished, with everybody screaming, demortuous,
- 21:08demortuous. Somewhere around six in the morning, I began to get a feeling,
- 21:14several feelings, and all of them hurt. It just turned on and
- 21:18I rolled over on my side to watch a man who hadn't seen me step
- 21:19into his car with a fresh shave and a fishing pole, pulled out of
- 21:23the lot and disappear. Somewhere. Vaguely, I heard the sounds of early
- 21:27morning traffic, streetcar clang somewhere. Nothing much happened for a while. Been
- 21:34a key to me. It might be a good idea to get on my
- 21:36feet and find a telephone and get hold of a doctor, and see how
- 21:38long I had to live. Somehow I managed, by holding onto a fence
- 21:42and stumbling against cars to make the front entrance to at least went Over's house.
- 21:47I made the elevator self service my way up to the ninth floor,
- 21:48and staggered toward nine thirteen. I would have been better off in the parking
- 21:59lot. At Least went Over was there, sitting in a large chair over
- 22:03the window. She still wore the black strapless dress, an urbane peace she'd
- 22:06had on the night before. The grapes would drawn. The door was slightly
- 22:08opened. Lighte from the hall seeped in. She had a telephone on her
- 22:14lap. The receiver was off, held idly in one hand. She looked
- 22:18at me, but she was looking at nothing. Oh oh, oh,
- 22:26mister Dollar, it's you's been in an accident. You're hurt. I don't
- 22:32think you'll need this. Oh well then, mister Dollar, Well I suppose
- 22:40you've met some people to night who know a great deal about me. A
- 22:42gambler, a jeweler. Did I tell you about Teddy Davis? He's really
- 22:48a dear mister darr quite the nicest boy I've met since Noah died on the
- 22:52boat. No and I had so many things together, mister dr I do
- 22:56think he enjoyed being alive with me. I mean I cried when Noah died,
- 23:02I really did. I cried like a little baby. Of course,
- 23:07I cried when I heard my brother was killed in Korea, and when Daddy
- 23:11died in his office with a heart attack. I shouldn't really cry anymore.
- 23:17I mean, after all, I am cursed. I told you that.
- 23:21Yes, I told you. I didn't believe that there's no such thing,
