- 0:51Speaker 2: On today's show, we're talking to Ben Batton.
- 0:54Speaker 1: I don't think you sent me the script for this week,
- 0:56Speaker 1: so I don't know what I'm supposed to say. Am
- 0:59Speaker 1: I genuinely supposed to say?
- 1:00Speaker 3: Hello?
- 1:01Speaker 2: No? No, that's that's in a minute here. I will
- 1:04Speaker 2: send you the script right now in do you know
- 1:07Speaker 2: how to check slack?
- 1:08Speaker 3: Oh?
- 1:10Speaker 2: Her email is better.
- 1:11Speaker 3: We should have we should have went over this a
- 1:13Speaker 3: little bit ago. But I'm Dickie here, we are. You're
- 1:18Speaker 3: all right.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Never can tell around here. On today's show, we're talking
- 1:23Speaker 2: to Ben Batton.
- 1:25Speaker 3: We've got a.
- 1:25Speaker 2: Hot, hot, hot tip off. We're gonna do a little
- 1:28Speaker 2: show and tell. We're gonna talk to Mark Kenyon about
- 1:32Speaker 2: the latest public land controversy, and finally you are faithful,
- 1:36Speaker 2: audience will choose the winner of the trailcam photo contest
- 1:40Speaker 2: brought to you by Moultrie. Sounds like another fantastic episode,
- 1:46Speaker 2: Ryan Seth, how are you guys doing today?
- 1:49Speaker 1: Fantastic, real good, real good, high anxiety likes started. Yeah,
- 1:57Speaker 1: and I have lots to do before or I can
- 2:00Speaker 1: like really get serious about hunting season.
- 2:03Speaker 2: That's your first big trip.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Brown bear in Alaska, which is a big, big trip
- 2:10Speaker 1: for anybody. Yeah, yeah, and truly a trip I never
- 2:13Speaker 1: thought I would go on, So, I mean it's it's huge,
- 2:18Speaker 1: and I'm just trying to get any mental place with
- 2:20Speaker 1: all the adult responsibilities where I can just focus on
- 2:24Speaker 1: nothing but that.
- 2:25Speaker 3: Sure, it's hard.
- 2:27Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, so you did you.
- 2:29Speaker 3: Ever guide a brown bear hunt before?
- 2:31Speaker 1: I worked as a packer for one season up on
- 2:35Speaker 1: the peninsula, So it'll be super cool to come back.
- 2:37Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, cool, it'll be awesome.
- 2:40Speaker 1: You know, like any ultra low paid position in the
- 2:42Speaker 1: outdoor world, you just do everything when you're up.
- 2:47Speaker 2: There, and you never dream about being the guy sitting
- 2:50Speaker 2: on the other side of the boat.
- 2:51Speaker 1: Oh yeah, never, never, And just like at that point
- 2:55Speaker 1: in my life too, I was like, how much did
- 2:57Speaker 1: the tag car?
- 3:02Speaker 2: Who would ever do this?
- 3:03Speaker 3: Jeez?
- 3:04Speaker 2: Incredibly indulgent, Seth, how are you?
- 3:08Speaker 3: I'm great? I'm uh. I gotta say I'm more excited
- 3:11Speaker 3: for fall fishing than picking up the boat at this
- 3:13Speaker 3: point in my life.
- 3:14Speaker 2: M hm. Got out this weekend for a little bit.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Yep, but I Jason, just big brown trout running after streamers,
- 3:21Speaker 1: that's what you're thinking about. No, just drown.
- 3:27Speaker 3: Big wall eyes and small mouth putting on the feedbag
- 3:31Speaker 3: for winter, That's what That's what gets me excited. That
- 3:35Speaker 3: and then just the thought of rifle season coming. I
- 3:38Speaker 3: like shooting things at further distances with center fire cartridges.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Your trip out to the Pecker, Uh.
- 3:47Speaker 3: It was a lot of ship happened that that. It's
- 3:51Speaker 3: a long story. It's a long story. We got one
- 3:55Speaker 3: solid day in, but the weekend ended, uh sooner than
- 3:59Speaker 3: ike s back, So we'll just end it there. I
- 4:03Speaker 3: got back.
- 4:05Speaker 2: I got back to my old stomping grounds and the
- 4:07Speaker 2: Little Miami River, and I drowned four night crawlers, caught
- 4:10Speaker 2: one fish.
- 4:11Speaker 3: That probably puts you back in a certain place and time.
- 4:14Speaker 2: My god, just the the bugs landing on me just
- 4:18Speaker 2: listening to the water.
- 4:19Speaker 3: Was it after dark?
- 4:21Speaker 2: No, because much of my disappointment, all of my childhood
- 4:24Speaker 2: fishing areas now are extremely well signed with this area
- 4:28Speaker 2: closes at sundown or dusk. Yeah, like it used to
- 4:33Speaker 2: be the case that this is before Onyx, We're just like,
- 4:36Speaker 2: do you think anybody owns this? Can we fish here?
- 4:38Speaker 2: And then we sort of verified that yes, it was
- 4:40Speaker 2: owned by the county or whatever, owned by the town,
- 4:43Speaker 2: but there was no actual like signage, and so everywhere
- 4:49Speaker 2: I pulled up, I was like, like, I came back
- 4:52Speaker 2: from the tailgate tour literally on my way home from Columbus,
- 4:56Speaker 2: bought a big old cann of cors Light and twelve
- 4:59Speaker 2: night brawlers ripped down with like ten minutes before sunset
- 5:04Speaker 2: got to the spot I wanted the first thing I
- 5:06Speaker 2: see when I get out of my car is a
- 5:08Speaker 2: big sign that says closed at dusk, which I'm just like,
- 5:12Speaker 2: we used to have fight club down there, you know,
- 5:15Speaker 2: it used to be the wild West.
- 5:17Speaker 3: I am.
- 5:18Speaker 1: I'm advocating heavily with my buddy and his wife who's
- 5:22Speaker 1: also my buddy, to allow their oldest boy who's nine,
- 5:29Speaker 1: this is a real like western Montana family float fish
- 5:33Speaker 1: fly fishing for trout all the time. But I'm trying
- 5:38Speaker 1: to get them to allow the nine year old out
- 5:41Speaker 1: for antelope camp this year, with the intention of getting
- 5:47Speaker 1: that kid on some catfish too. So much introducing the
- 5:51Speaker 1: joy of sitting next to a rod that's just stuck
- 5:54Speaker 1: in a mud bank.
- 5:55Speaker 2: I did bring I did bring a bell. I got
- 5:58Speaker 2: to listen to the bell jingle. Excellent stuck stuck my
- 6:02Speaker 2: rod butt in a tangled root, Paul, and just oh,
- 6:05Speaker 2: it's like old times. But I didn't get a catfish.
- 6:07Speaker 2: I just caught a cut a little striper. Oh, and
- 6:10Speaker 2: then I broke my rod. I set the hook in
- 6:14Speaker 2: that striper, and I heard this little tick, and I
- 6:16Speaker 2: kind of like pushed all the sections back together, thinking
- 6:20Speaker 2: that maybe the jiggled loose. And then I got the
- 6:23Speaker 2: fish in cast out again, went to set the hook
- 6:27Speaker 2: on another fish, and the thing just snapped off like
- 6:30Speaker 2: five inches above the cork. So that's why I only
- 6:33Speaker 2: drowned four of the twelve worms. Eight of them are
- 6:36Speaker 2: probably still living rich lives alongside the beautiful banks of
- 6:41Speaker 2: the Little Miami.
- 6:42Speaker 3: Well, at least you got out there and got a couple.
- 6:44Speaker 2: All maybe you want to do is go back immediately, Yeah,
- 6:47Speaker 2: and just float that thing again and again and again.
- 6:50Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean that's the.
- 6:53Speaker 1: Thing that nobody can properly celebrate, right is Failure just
- 7:00Speaker 1: really makes you be like, like your weekend, right, I'm
- 7:03Speaker 1: sure you're like, I.
- 7:03Speaker 3: Need to go back. Oh God, I just put a
- 7:06Speaker 3: big W on the board. All I think about every
- 7:09Speaker 3: day since then is I just gotta get back.
- 7:12Speaker 1: Yeah, I wasted my weekend failed, Yeah, exactly, got to
- 7:17Speaker 1: do it right.
- 7:18Speaker 2: Well, speaking of doing things right, Joining us on the
- 7:22Speaker 2: line next is Mark Kenyan, Oh yeah, post of the
- 7:25Speaker 2: Wired to Hunt podcast and author of That Wild Country
- 7:29Speaker 2: and epic journey through the past, present, and future of
- 7:32Speaker 2: America's public lands.
- 7:34Speaker 1: Meet Eats, Most Beautiful cast member, Mark, Welcome to the show, sir,
- 7:38Speaker 1: there he is.
- 7:39Speaker 5: Look at that Oh stunning, cal You're you're too kind.
- 7:44Speaker 4: You're too kind. It's good to be here though, guess
- 7:45Speaker 4: thanks for having me Mark.
- 7:47Speaker 2: There's been a lot of news recently about something called
- 7:50Speaker 2: the roadless Rule, and uh for those listening to this,
- 7:54Speaker 2: uh this podcast or watching us on YouTube here if
- 7:57Speaker 2: they're not familiar with the road risk, the roadless rule.
- 8:02Speaker 2: Can you explain what the roadless rule is?
- 8:06Speaker 5: Yeah, So the two thousand and one Roadless Rule was
- 8:10Speaker 5: enacted by the National Forest Service and the US Department
- 8:13Speaker 5: of Agriculture back in two thousand and one, as the
- 8:15Speaker 5: title would tell you, in response to a couple different
- 8:19Speaker 5: things going on at that time. You had one which
- 8:22Speaker 5: was a serious backlog in maintenance of the Forest Service
- 8:28Speaker 5: road system. So the US Forest Service has nearly four
- 8:32Speaker 5: hundred thousand miles of roads running across their public lands.
- 8:37Speaker 5: That's a lot of work to try to keep that,
- 8:39Speaker 5: you know, in good working conditions that people can access
- 8:42Speaker 5: their public lands, so that folks can access these different
- 8:45Speaker 5: places to do whatever kind of use they might be undertaking.
- 8:49Speaker 5: So at this time in the late nineties, they realized, wow,
- 8:52Speaker 5: we have a massive maintenance backlog. These roads that have
- 8:55Speaker 5: been subsidized by taxpayers are now not providing the return.
- 9:00Speaker 4: Having serious budget issues.
- 9:01Speaker 5: At the same time, we have also, as one person
- 9:04Speaker 5: put it, cut the face off our forests in many places,
- 9:08Speaker 5: and now we are left with just you know, fragments
- 9:11Speaker 5: of habitat that has not been roaded, that has not
- 9:14Speaker 5: been developed. And so maybe we should think about what
- 9:17Speaker 5: the long term future of these last places should be
- 9:20Speaker 5: you know, long story short.
- 9:21Speaker 4: What that led to was the Roadless Rule.
- 9:23Speaker 5: It was a very long process, you know, almost two years,
- 9:27Speaker 5: hundreds of public meetings, one point six million public comments
- 9:33Speaker 5: put in from the public in regards to whether or
- 9:36Speaker 5: not this is a good idea and how we.
- 9:37Speaker 4: Should go about it.
- 9:38Speaker 5: All that led to this rule being created enacted, and
- 9:42Speaker 5: it protected about fifty eight point five million acres of
- 9:45Speaker 5: our national forest system in a relatively unroaded way. So
- 9:51Speaker 5: there were exceptions baked into this rule that allowed for
- 9:55Speaker 5: some roads to be built in these places if there
- 9:57Speaker 5: was you know, need for wildfire mitigation and management. There
- 10:02Speaker 5: were exceptions put into this rule that would allow some
- 10:04Speaker 5: new road building in the case of wildlife habitat improvement
- 10:08Speaker 5: projects being needed. But in general, this fifty eight point
- 10:13Speaker 5: five million acres of national forests would not be the
- 10:17Speaker 5: home for new roads, so it would leave this area
- 10:20Speaker 5: and they relatively undeveloped, relatively intact, relatively unfragmented state. And
- 10:27Speaker 5: it has been in that state for you know, twenty
- 10:30Speaker 5: four years now. And these places are some of our
- 10:33Speaker 5: you know, our best, our last best backcountry elk hunting spots,
- 10:36Speaker 5: mule deer hunting spots, you know, high country trout spots.
- 10:41Speaker 5: I went on my two kids at the time, they
- 10:44Speaker 5: were four and six. I think it was their first
- 10:47Speaker 5: backpacking trip with both of them, or maybe the three
- 10:49Speaker 5: and five that was in one of our inventory roadless areas.
- 10:52Speaker 5: I killed my first elk on an inventoried roadless area.
- 10:56Speaker 5: So long story short, these are really really special places,
- 10:59Speaker 5: and they're in the news right now because the administration
- 11:02Speaker 5: has proposed removing that rule entirely, rolling back all of
- 11:06Speaker 5: those protections. So that's the high level scoop. That's what
- 11:09Speaker 5: the roadless rule is. That's why it's in the news
- 11:12Speaker 5: right now.
- 11:12Speaker 2: Gotcha. And so what are the I guess what are
- 11:16Speaker 2: the main arguments on both sides of the issue. What's
- 11:18Speaker 2: the rationale for You've laid out a bit of about
- 11:21Speaker 2: the benefits of these roadless areas for hunters and anglers,
- 11:24Speaker 2: but what's the rationale for rolling it back.
- 11:27Speaker 5: Yeah, so in the proposal in the you know, in
- 11:30Speaker 5: all of the press releases and comments from the administration,
- 11:34Speaker 5: from the Secretary of Agriculture, the reason for rolling back
- 11:38Speaker 5: the roadless rule has supposedly been to to help you know,
- 11:43Speaker 5: move forward with President Trump's executive order to expand timber
- 11:49Speaker 5: production and then also to better manage our forests. There's
- 11:53Speaker 5: been a lot of talk about the fact that, you know,
- 11:55Speaker 5: our forests have been undermanaged.
- 11:56Speaker 4: They have you know, too much.
- 12:00Speaker 5: Fuel for wildfire, so wildfire risk is high, the habitat
- 12:05Speaker 5: isn't as good for wildlife, We're not producing as much
- 12:08Speaker 5: timber as maybe we have in the past, and so
- 12:10Speaker 5: the argument is that if we roll back the roadless rule,
- 12:13Speaker 5: that will fix all of that.
- 12:14Speaker 4: That's why they say they should roll this rule back.
- 12:17Speaker 5: On the flip side, advocates for the rule, which include
- 12:21Speaker 5: most all environmental and conservation groups, most hunting and fishing
- 12:25Speaker 5: groups that I've seen, have all been coming out very
- 12:27Speaker 5: strongly in support of the rule. The reason why we
- 12:32Speaker 5: think the rollless rule should stick around is because, as
- 12:34Speaker 5: I mentioned, this is protecting some of our last best
- 12:38Speaker 5: hunting and fishing places. This is protecting, you know, some
- 12:41Speaker 5: of our last unfragmented wildlife habitat for so many species,
- 12:44Speaker 5: whether it be species we hunt fish or endangered and
- 12:47Speaker 5: threatened species. We do not have very many of these
- 12:51Speaker 5: places that are not already broken up and separated and
- 12:55Speaker 5: bifurcated by roads and open to develop. So this is
- 12:58Speaker 5: something that is pretty rarely days. As I mentioned, there
- 13:02Speaker 5: are exceptions already for wildfire management and for habitat management.
- 13:07Speaker 5: Trout Unlimited has done a great job of starting to
- 13:10Speaker 5: quantify this. If you go to their website, they've got
- 13:13Speaker 5: an interactive map that showcases where these inventory roadless areas
- 13:17Speaker 5: are and what kinds of management management efforts have been
- 13:20Speaker 5: happening there. So significant wildfire mitigation efforts have been underway
- 13:25Speaker 5: in these places. So it's it's false to say that
- 13:28Speaker 5: these places have not had any management or any work
- 13:30Speaker 5: done on them. But certainly, you know, there's an argument
- 13:34Speaker 5: to be made that our national forces absolutely can and
- 13:38Speaker 5: should be managed better. We do need to manage for
- 13:41Speaker 5: fire risk, we do need to manage for wildlife habitat.
- 13:44Speaker 4: And I think there's you know, two things to consider.
- 13:47Speaker 5: One, a lot of that should be happening not in
- 13:49Speaker 5: our back country roadless areas, but up in the wildland
- 13:53Speaker 5: urban interface where there already are roads. Something like eighty
- 13:56Speaker 5: or eighty five percent of all of our wildfires are
- 13:59Speaker 5: started by us, first off, and I think it's ninety
- 14:02Speaker 5: percent of the fires on our National Forest start within
- 14:05Speaker 5: a half mile of a road.
- 14:07Speaker 4: So roads typically are what leads.
- 14:08Speaker 5: To wildfires igniting and started. That's where the stuff's happening
- 14:12Speaker 5: a lot of the time, and the places that we
- 14:14Speaker 5: want to protect from fire, homes, human development. You know,
- 14:18Speaker 5: that stuff's not in these roadless areas is up on
- 14:21Speaker 5: that what they call it the the wildline urban interface.
- 14:25Speaker 4: So the wouie, I think is what people refer to
- 14:27Speaker 4: that as.
- 14:28Speaker 2: Who could forget?
- 14:30Speaker 4: What's that?
- 14:30Speaker 2: Who could forget that?
- 14:31Speaker 4: The WOOI yeah, the wooie.
- 14:34Speaker 5: So, yeah, we need to have management that can be
- 14:36Speaker 5: done in these places that are not in our inventory
- 14:38Speaker 5: roldless areas it should be. There's plenty of challenges to
- 14:41Speaker 5: that that can be addressed, and maybe there are ways
- 14:44Speaker 5: we can improve the roadless rule. I think there's room
- 14:46Speaker 5: for enhancing it, fixing it, finding more ways for more
- 14:50Speaker 5: of these exceptions to be created for temporary roads, to
- 14:53Speaker 5: do more of this careful management in the right ways.
- 14:56Speaker 5: I think there's a conversation to be had there and
- 14:58Speaker 5: a lot of conservation and hunting and fish organizations I
- 15:01Speaker 5: think would be happy to engage in that. But this
- 15:04Speaker 5: wholesale rollback of all of it that would eliminate all
- 15:08Speaker 5: of these you know, carefully managed and protected places that
- 15:13Speaker 5: benefit a lot of folks and a lot of wildlife
- 15:15Speaker 5: and a lot of user bases. That seems the wrong
- 15:18Speaker 5: way to go about this, at least my two cents
- 15:21Speaker 5: on the matter.
- 15:22Speaker 2: Sure, are there specific regions or forests where this debate
- 15:27Speaker 2: is particularly heated, like areas of the country that are
- 15:30Speaker 2: going to be affected more than others.
- 15:33Speaker 5: Yeah, So there are inventoried roadless areas, which are what
- 15:36Speaker 5: we call these places that the roadless road applies to.
- 15:39Speaker 5: There are iras inventory roadless areas and thirty nine different
- 15:42Speaker 5: states from west coast to east, but the vast majority
- 15:46Speaker 5: of these spots are in the ten Western states, and
- 15:50Speaker 5: Alaska in particular, with the Tongus National Forest has probably
- 15:53Speaker 5: the largest impacted zone. The Tongas has about just over
- 15:58Speaker 5: nine million acres of roadless area there. So that would
- 16:01Speaker 5: make a huge uh, This would be a really big
- 16:04Speaker 5: deal if the roadless role was rescinded, especially up there
- 16:07Speaker 5: in the Tongas where you have you know, there were
- 16:11Speaker 5: a lot of roads built back in the day to
- 16:13Speaker 5: start developing the Tongas, and that has you know, for example,
- 16:17Speaker 5: really really impacted salmon and steelhead runs up there because
- 16:21Speaker 5: every one of these roads has culverts crossing hundreds and
- 16:25Speaker 5: hundreds of different streams, and that's a major issue now
- 16:28Speaker 5: that I know that Trod and Limited has been working
- 16:30Speaker 5: on for years trying to you know, fix culverts and
- 16:33Speaker 5: open up passageway for fish through these many, many different roadways.
- 16:39Speaker 4: So there's a lot to be discussed there in Alaska.
- 16:41Speaker 5: I know, for example, you know, in Wyoming and Montana,
- 16:46Speaker 5: some of my favorite places that I've spent time in,
- 16:48Speaker 5: those could possibly be impacted. So if you live in
- 16:50Speaker 5: the West especially, this is something you should be paying
- 16:53Speaker 5: attention to. But I know in New Hampshire, in North Carolina,
- 16:57Speaker 5: in Michigan, all those states have less areas that could
- 17:00Speaker 5: be impacted as well.
- 17:02Speaker 2: Gotcha? And what should people who care about public lands
- 17:06Speaker 2: access and conservation be watching for as this issue develops?
- 17:10Speaker 2: Where do things stand right now? And if they want
- 17:13Speaker 2: to weigh in, how can hunters and anglers make a
- 17:15Speaker 2: difference on this?
- 17:17Speaker 5: Yeah, So this past Friday, so five six days ago,
- 17:22Speaker 5: the administration officially proposed this rollback and opened up a
- 17:26Speaker 5: comment period. The comment period is a twenty one day
- 17:30Speaker 5: window that we the public have to submit to the
- 17:35Speaker 5: administration our thoughts on this proposal. And so I you know,
- 17:40Speaker 5: any hunter and angler who cares about these last roadless
- 17:42Speaker 5: places and who would like to see them, you know,
- 17:45Speaker 5: protect them this way, should absolutely go and submit a
- 17:48Speaker 5: comment explaining, you know, why these wild places, why these
- 17:52Speaker 5: roadless areas are important, why the careful management of them
- 17:55Speaker 5: in such a way is important for hunting and fishing
- 17:58Speaker 5: and wildlife and whatever else it is that you love
- 18:00Speaker 5: to do. If you go to backcountry hunters dot org,
- 18:04Speaker 5: there's an action center there that has an opportunity for
- 18:08Speaker 5: you to send a letter to your elected officials, and
- 18:10Speaker 5: then also instructions for how to access the Federal Register,
- 18:15Speaker 5: which is where you submit your official comments. So what
- 18:18Speaker 5: I'd ask everyone to do is to go there, follow
- 18:21Speaker 5: the action items there on that document, which would be
- 18:24Speaker 5: sending the note, and then submitting an actual comment to
- 18:27Speaker 5: the Federal Register. We have until September nineteenth to do so.
- 18:32Speaker 5: And so you know, this is this is the democratic process.
- 18:36Speaker 5: This is our opportunity to get in there and submit
- 18:38Speaker 5: our thoughts, to share our perspectives, and to ask our
- 18:41Speaker 5: elected officials and those who are appointed by them to
- 18:45Speaker 5: do what's best for the public and the long term
- 18:48Speaker 5: future of these places and the wildlife that live on them,
- 18:50Speaker 5: and we got to speak up.
- 18:52Speaker 2: Appreciate it. Mark, thanks for thanks for helping us better
- 18:56Speaker 2: understand this issue and for everything you're doing for public lands.
- 19:00Speaker 2: I know you got some groceries to unload and you've
- 19:03Speaker 2: got some deer to hunt this afternoon, So with that
- 19:08Speaker 2: we'll let you go.
- 19:09Speaker 3: Thanks guys, Thanks Mark. Good Night's Mark.
- 19:14Speaker 2: Boy, he's got a he's got a good delivery there.
- 19:17Speaker 3: Oh, great delivery. Great.
- 19:19Speaker 2: Good to have advocates like that on our side.
- 19:21Speaker 3: Yeah. On that note too.
- 19:23Speaker 6: Rashad comment and said Mark just got out of the
- 19:25Speaker 6: grocery store and remembered he was supposed to go live today.
- 19:27Speaker 6: I will say, Mark, the reason for that is that
- 19:29Speaker 6: Mark is that technically off the clock today. Yeah, he's
- 19:31Speaker 6: out of the office. So he did us a big
- 19:33Speaker 6: favor jumping in.
- 19:33Speaker 2: So's he's on a little family hunting and fishing trip
- 19:37Speaker 2: and he took time out of his busy time off.
- 19:40Speaker 1: Can I can I throw in a little color on roadless?
- 19:43Speaker 3: Sure, because so we call it.
- 19:46Speaker 1: Roadless, but there's about twenty million acres out there that
- 19:50Speaker 1: have pre existing road networks mark cover that at the
- 19:54Speaker 1: very beginning. Then at the end he kind of went
- 19:56Speaker 1: back to roadless, which it is roadless designated, but there
- 20:00Speaker 1: are pre existing roads out there that people walk and
- 20:03Speaker 1: hike and used to access deeper into these areas. But
- 20:09Speaker 1: sometimes that gets thrown around as like.
- 20:11Speaker 2: The oh yeah we're locked out.
- 20:13Speaker 1: Well yeah, there's that too, but they're like, oh, yeah,
- 20:16Speaker 1: your roadless has roads on it.
- 20:17Speaker 3: How is it roadless? Right?
- 20:21Speaker 1: And the you know, the big thing here is that
- 20:26Speaker 1: there is a history of litigation by certain groups when
- 20:35Speaker 1: the roadless rule is used as it should be to
- 20:39Speaker 1: try to build roads for the purposes of habitat.
- 20:44Speaker 3: And things like that.
- 20:45Speaker 1: Like there's a lot of sewing that goes on to
- 20:47Speaker 1: stop all road and building even though it's written into
- 20:50Speaker 1: the roadless rule, and some of those feelings have very
- 20:55Speaker 1: much come to the surface to say get rid of
- 20:58Speaker 1: the roadless rule.
- 20:59Speaker 3: But the flip side of this is.
- 21:01Speaker 2: That you see the same thing with the Endangered Species Act.
- 21:03Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly exactly is the roadless rule is really working
- 21:10Speaker 1: for a lot of people in a lot of areas.
- 21:13Speaker 1: And so obviously there's middle ground here for roadless rule
- 21:18Speaker 1: reform where it's needed, and this idea of it's got
- 21:23Speaker 1: to be all one way or all the other way
- 21:25Speaker 1: is just not accurate. And so this is just really
- 21:29Speaker 1: lazy management to say, okay, get rid of the whole thing,
- 21:32Speaker 1: and also to classify this as only a timber play
- 21:38Speaker 1: is completely wrong. Timbers the thing that gets absolutely talked
- 21:42Speaker 1: about the most, both in fire fuel reduction, which nobody's
- 21:46Speaker 1: come out to say how we're going to pay for
- 21:49Speaker 1: reducing you know, low growth that is not marketable by
- 21:56Speaker 1: and large unless it's extremely close to like a pellet
- 22:01Speaker 1: facility or you know, a pull situation that makes it
- 22:08Speaker 1: something you would get paid to do versus something you
- 22:11Speaker 1: pay for obviously right now, like we're not talking about
- 22:15Speaker 1: paying for a lot of things, right right. That's why
- 22:18Speaker 1: I bring that up. So the other thing that's not
- 22:21Speaker 1: getting talked a lot about here is this would provide
- 22:25Speaker 1: the ability to build roads to areas for mineral withdrawal.
- 22:29Speaker 1: And when we talk about mineral withdrawal, we're talking about
- 22:34Speaker 1: something with large footprints and long term impacts that instead
- 22:41Speaker 1: of our friends seth here having to wait for a
- 22:45Speaker 1: logging operation to get done over the course of a
- 22:48Speaker 1: couple of seasons, and then going in and hunting that
- 22:51Speaker 1: stuff that now provides early successional growth that animals love
- 22:54Speaker 1: to come in and eat and can be really good
- 22:59Speaker 1: hunting if if that cut is done in the correct way.
- 23:04Speaker 1: We're talking about an area that Seth does not go
- 23:08Speaker 1: back into for his entire lifetime because it takes a
- 23:12Speaker 1: long time to run these mineral extraction operations, and obviously
- 23:17Speaker 1: we need stuff that comes out of the ground too.
- 23:20Speaker 1: But is that a situation where we have to roll
- 23:24Speaker 1: back this entire thing, or can we identify these areas
- 23:28Speaker 1: right and say, hey, this is really important right now,
- 23:30Speaker 1: we need to reform the roadless rule.
- 23:33Speaker 2: To accommodate these yes, specific things.
- 23:35Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 23:35Speaker 1: So, like, I, for one, very sick and tired of
- 23:40Speaker 1: a Democrat administration coming in swinging the pendulum extremely one
- 23:45Speaker 1: way and then a conservative administration coming in swinging it
- 23:48Speaker 1: completely the opposite way, when I feel like most Americans
- 23:53Speaker 1: are like, oh, this thing in the middle makes sense.
- 23:56Speaker 2: Yeah, yep, well, agreed, keep pounting the drum our. Next
- 24:03Speaker 2: segment is show would tell shot down.
- 24:11Speaker 3: Man?
- 24:12Speaker 2: Shot down? The sweet tones?
- 24:17Speaker 1: Shot is the song It's better? Or Philip dancing to
- 24:22Speaker 1: his own song better? Probably this is like his morning showers.
- 24:27Speaker 2: Stink face is good. Stink face is good.
- 24:30Speaker 1: Can you see I'm putting gel in his hair to
- 24:31Speaker 1: that song?
- 24:32Speaker 2: Oh yeah, that cut seth. Let's start with you did
- 24:36Speaker 2: you bring to share with the class today?
- 24:37Speaker 3: I brought a thing that I found out on the
- 24:40Speaker 3: prairie one time when I was hunting deer.
- 24:46Speaker 2: Boy, that's neat.
- 24:47Speaker 3: This is a bison skull that I found sticking out
- 24:51Speaker 3: of a bank. Wow in Montana. It's an eater size bison. Yeah,
- 24:57Speaker 3: not a big one.
- 24:58Speaker 2: Where are you hunting deer in Montana? And uh, like county?
- 25:04Speaker 2: Just joking.
- 25:06Speaker 3: So, my wife had just killed a pretty cool cactus buck,
- 25:10Speaker 3: and we were several miles from our vehicle at this
- 25:16Speaker 3: point in time, and it was starting to get dark,
- 25:18Speaker 3: and uh, I just pulled up the old ONEX and
- 25:21Speaker 3: noticed that there was a two track that got us
- 25:23Speaker 3: a little closer. So I kept her there to work
- 25:27Speaker 3: on the deer. She needed some experience in breaking critters
- 25:30Speaker 3: down by herself anyway, opportunity.
- 25:32Speaker 2: Yeah, so plus then you don't have to be there
- 25:35Speaker 2: during that process. Yep.
- 25:37Speaker 3: And I was like, I'm gonna go back and get
- 25:39Speaker 3: the get the truck and make a loop and we'll
- 25:41Speaker 3: get a little closer for the pack out. So I
- 25:45Speaker 3: did that, and all my way there, I just happened
- 25:47Speaker 3: to catch out of the corner of my eye a
- 25:49Speaker 3: little bit of white sticking out of a bank that
- 25:52Speaker 3: was wasn't even like a exposed type bank that has like,
- 25:56Speaker 3: you know, a bunch of soil and stuff. It was
- 25:58Speaker 3: just like completely over and grass and little woody shrubs
- 26:02Speaker 3: and set. Yeah, and uh yeah, I just saw a
- 26:06Speaker 3: little piece of white and I kind of got the
- 26:08Speaker 3: digging around and it just kept getting bigger and bigger
- 26:11Speaker 3: and ended up digging that thing out, which was cool. Yeah,
- 26:16Speaker 3: I should I was in a hurry, so I kind
- 26:18Speaker 3: of there was a lot more to it than this. Yeah,
- 26:22Speaker 3: I should have taken my time and got the whole thing.
- 26:26Speaker 1: Yeah, but then you got got the misses back there
- 26:29Speaker 1: being like, yeah, just abandoned go.
- 26:35Speaker 2: The butchering went all right.
- 26:37Speaker 3: Well I got back and uh she had just stopped
- 26:41Speaker 3: and was like I got to a point where I
- 26:43Speaker 3: just didn't know what I was doing, so I figured
- 26:45Speaker 3: I'd wait for you, gotcha? But uh yeah, very cool.
- 26:49Speaker 2: So I never found one.
- 26:51Speaker 3: I'd love to, you know, there's a lot of them
- 26:54Speaker 3: out there. You just got to find them. A lot
- 26:55Speaker 3: of them are buried. But a cool story about the
- 26:59Speaker 3: the buck she killed. I found that deer like twelve
- 27:02Speaker 3: miles away the day before. Oh cool. Yeah, And we
- 27:06Speaker 3: woke up that morning and we're like, we're just gonna
- 27:09Speaker 3: go hunt a different area, and for whatever reason, it
- 27:12Speaker 3: to be that deer overnight.
- 27:13Speaker 2: To get killed.
- 27:14Speaker 3: Moved a lot. So yeah, that's cool, that's really cool.
- 27:19Speaker 2: Cal, What did you bring the class here?
- 27:21Speaker 1: So I actually thought about this m first time here?
- 27:26Speaker 1: Or meteor radio life, Nate says, who wants to place
- 27:28Speaker 1: odds on what Cal takes off the wall for his show?
- 27:30Speaker 3: And yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, so.
- 27:34Speaker 2: Take off the nightstand, I think.
- 27:36Speaker 1: So this is the first real good book I've read
- 27:39Speaker 1: in a while here, and it's by this dude, Nate Schweber,
- 27:43Speaker 1: who was actually I think we were actually classmates, or
- 27:46Speaker 1: maybe we didn't overlap, but he's a Hellgate knight a
- 27:50Speaker 1: little Montana just like I am. This America of ours
- 27:53Speaker 1: Bernard Navis Devoto, and it is a great conservation history book.
- 27:59Speaker 1: It's got a lot of relevance for this time in
- 28:04Speaker 1: space right now. There's a healthy help on of super
- 28:09Speaker 1: cute love story. There's all sorts of I would call
- 28:13Speaker 1: him like celebrity cameos in here that are are really
- 28:18Speaker 1: interesting as well.
- 28:21Speaker 3: But really.
- 28:25Speaker 1: It tackles a lot of like land theft, public land theft,
- 28:29Speaker 1: and it's like.
- 28:30Speaker 2: He's really engaged in like the late forties and fifties
- 28:33Speaker 2: right to photo, Yeah.
- 28:35Speaker 1: I mean earlier earlier in that too, taken before his time. Yeah,
- 28:40Speaker 1: big old heart attack. Yeah, cut him down.
- 28:44Speaker 2: But so when you're looking to forget about your day
- 28:47Speaker 2: to day stresses, pick up a book about public land
- 28:51Speaker 2: theft and pillaging of our shared resources.
- 28:55Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 28:55Speaker 1: And the reality is is just like today, the reason
- 28:59Speaker 1: that folks trying to take all this awesome stuff away
- 29:02Speaker 1: from us is because folks were paying attention.
- 29:05Speaker 3: Yeah, and it took.
- 29:06Speaker 1: Gold Bernard and nave us here to shine a little
- 29:08Speaker 1: light on the situation. So great book, highly recommend.
- 29:14Speaker 2: Very cool. Yeah, appreciate it well. I brought. I brought
- 29:17Speaker 2: two things. One I was the first idea, and I
- 29:22Speaker 2: thought it was a good psa. So I was looking
- 29:24Speaker 2: at the gear shelf and oh, bless your heart, this
- 29:29Speaker 2: is the deuce number three. It's a trial for burying
- 29:33Speaker 2: your waist when you need to defecate in the woods,
- 29:36Speaker 2: which I hope to be doing plenty of this fall
- 29:39Speaker 2: if my work commitments allow. This probably weighs like like
- 29:45Speaker 2: weighs like a couple credit cards. I mean, it's nothing.
- 29:48Speaker 2: Slide it right there next to your water bottle. Well
- 29:50Speaker 2: maybe not next to your water bottle, but it fits
- 29:52Speaker 2: almost anywhere. It's flat and burier. Duke folks cal had
- 29:57Speaker 2: an unfortunate incitant recently.
- 29:59Speaker 1: The whole weekend the was just marked by human feces
- 30:03Speaker 1: on dogs in dogs surface pooping. Ye, human surface pooping.
- 30:08Speaker 1: The woods around Bosangelus are heavily loved by humans and
- 30:15Speaker 1: they're not burying their waist.
- 30:16Speaker 2: So if you, if you're going out into the woods
- 30:19Speaker 2: this fall, and I hope you.
- 30:20Speaker 1: Are, imagine a long haired border collie, be prepared rolling
- 30:25Speaker 1: in your feces, yeah, and then running back and wanting
- 30:28Speaker 1: to jump in the vehicle.
- 30:30Speaker 2: So this is this actually says on here.
- 30:31Speaker 3: It's bad.
- 30:32Speaker 2: It's zero point ninety seven ounces.
- 30:35Speaker 1: Snort eight for human poop and we make out think
- 30:39Speaker 1: of that. Yeah, it's horrifying. It is horrifying, Randall, Why
- 30:43Speaker 1: is that deduced number three?
- 30:44Speaker 2: They have different sizes, gotcha?
- 30:46Speaker 3: I think that's adults.
- 30:48Speaker 2: That's great question. Yeah, there's different sizes.
- 30:53Speaker 3: I mean, mama bear, baby bear.
- 30:55Speaker 2: I used to knock a bear trowel.
- 30:57Speaker 7: Guy.
- 30:57Speaker 2: I used to be like, oh, there's plenty of sticks
- 30:59Speaker 2: in the woods, but you know, when you got to go,
- 31:00Speaker 2: you don't want to have to dig around for something
- 31:02Speaker 2: to dig around with.
- 31:04Speaker 3: Yeah, or just grabbing that rock to flip over.
- 31:06Speaker 2: Just grab the deuce and release the deuce, as I
- 31:09Speaker 2: like to say, there you go. And then I also, uh,
- 31:12Speaker 2: I lost my bipod hunting last fall, and uh, it
- 31:15Speaker 2: fell off my rifle. It's got a like a little
- 31:18Speaker 2: arc of clamp and I was in a I was
- 31:20Speaker 2: in an unfortunate situation of trying to get a shot
- 31:22Speaker 2: off at an animal and lost my bipod. Didn't realize
- 31:25Speaker 2: until I got back home. Followed my Onyx track and
- 31:28Speaker 2: grabbed it last week. So a little once over with
- 31:31Speaker 2: the wire wheel on the dremal and she's good to go.
- 31:33Speaker 2: So nice, ready for ready to getting ready for the fall.
- 31:36Speaker 2: I couldn't make up my mind when I visited the
- 31:38Speaker 2: gear bench.
- 31:39Speaker 3: I like it.
- 31:40Speaker 1: So you just just casually strolled in, just grabbed.
- 31:42Speaker 3: Something, didn't even think about it.
- 31:44Speaker 2: Yeah, there you go, audience, phil Uh, what's chat saying?
- 31:48Speaker 6: Hey, listen your feedback. We got some good questions this week.
- 31:52Speaker 6: This might be a good one for cal. I don't know,
- 31:54Speaker 6: but Leland asks, what are everyone's favorite dove recipes?
- 31:59Speaker 3: Mm hmm, Yeah, don't cook them too long?
- 32:04Speaker 1: Yeah, kind of medium, raresh and and just gnawm them
- 32:08Speaker 1: off the bone. I've also ground him into sausage. My
- 32:13Speaker 1: favorite thing that I've ever done, probably is you take
- 32:17Speaker 1: your dove breasts and throw some kotia cheese and cilantro
- 32:24Speaker 1: and salt and a little cumin, and run that stuff
- 32:27Speaker 1: through the grinder and use the soft sausage stuff and
- 32:31Speaker 1: attachment and just shoot it right into halapinos. Oh, and
- 32:34Speaker 1: then just roast the jlipinos while on the top deck
- 32:38Speaker 1: of the Pellet Girl.
- 32:40Speaker 2: It's kind of like a twist on the classic popper.
- 32:43Speaker 3: Oh people, Yeah, it's a killer. That's real good.
- 32:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I've classier than the I've always done, like a
- 32:48Speaker 2: classic popper. Or just throw them on the grill real
- 32:51Speaker 2: quick and yeah them rare.
- 32:53Speaker 3: Yeah. We used to fill at the meat off the
- 32:56Speaker 3: breast and throw it in spaghetti sauce. It was like
- 33:01Speaker 3: instead of me like spaghetti and me balls. There was
- 33:03Speaker 3: like spaghetti and duve breasts. Good.
- 33:09Speaker 6: Ramble Ethan says, did you pick up some skyline while
- 33:12Speaker 6: you were home? And follow up for me, how was
- 33:15Speaker 6: the tailgate tour your stop?
- 33:17Speaker 2: Well, I can answer the first question pretty quickly.
- 33:20Speaker 3: Yes.
- 33:21Speaker 2: Immediately after the Ohio State Buckeyes vanquished the uh deplorable
- 33:28Speaker 2: Texas Longhorns, I celebrated with four cheese conies onion mustard
- 33:32Speaker 2: in a small freeway. And then when the guy came
- 33:35Speaker 2: back and he said with the check, and he said,
- 33:38Speaker 2: you guys good, I said, no, bring me another cheese
- 33:40Speaker 2: cony please, just one onion and mustard. So I had
- 33:43Speaker 2: five plus three way And the next day I went
- 33:47Speaker 2: to the Reds game. And on the way to the
- 33:49Speaker 2: Reds game, I had four cheese conies, onion and mustard,
- 33:53Speaker 2: and I wanted to get more, but time didn't allow it.
- 33:57Speaker 2: I was on sort of a you know, I had
- 34:00Speaker 2: to crammele lot in I think, going to the zoo,
- 34:02Speaker 2: going to the baseball game, catching a fish.
- 34:04Speaker 3: I did it all.
- 34:05Speaker 2: But the tailgate tour was good. I met some delightful folks.
- 34:09Speaker 2: I saw there was a question there about ehd in Ohio,
- 34:13Speaker 2: and I heard a lot about EHD in Ohio. Sounds
- 34:16Speaker 2: like it's pretty bad at the moment. And actually, when
- 34:18Speaker 2: I was driving back from the airport to my folks house,
- 34:21Speaker 2: there's a guy that you know, like the houses that
- 34:25Speaker 2: like we'll write something on plywood and stick it out
- 34:27Speaker 2: by the road with their thoughts on the world. And
- 34:30Speaker 2: this guy had written postponed deer Hunting twenty twenty five,
- 34:33Speaker 2: let the herd recover.
- 34:34Speaker 3: WHOA wow.
- 34:35Speaker 2: And that was like a half an hour off. After
- 34:37Speaker 2: I got off the plane, I was like, whoa, this
- 34:39Speaker 2: is pretty serious. And then sure enough that sort of
- 34:43Speaker 2: peaked my curiosity. And the next day I heard a
- 34:45Speaker 2: lot about EHD. So but all in all, fabulous to
- 34:49Speaker 2: be in the Buckeye State and got to see Ohio
- 34:52Speaker 2: State win, got to see the Reds win, and got
- 34:55Speaker 2: to see some gorillas.
- 34:56Speaker 6: So, and that was Mason asking about EHD in Ohio.
- 35:01Speaker 6: This is from Stephen question for Seth. I'm trying to
- 35:03Speaker 6: beat twelve pounds four ounces Walleyes. Is four pack a
- 35:06Speaker 6: consideration or should I just be considering eerie?
- 35:12Speaker 3: I think you're narrowing it. You're narrowing in too much.
- 35:14Speaker 3: There's lots of places where you can beat twelve pounds
- 35:18Speaker 3: four ounces. The whole Missouri River system as as a
- 35:23Speaker 3: whole is pretty fantastic. A lot of places in the Midwest.
- 35:31Speaker 3: I'd recommend looking at survey data from local or from
- 35:38Speaker 3: state fish and game agencies. You can a lot of
- 35:41Speaker 3: times you can go on there and see when they
- 35:43Speaker 3: survey different lakes. They'll do something that fish app with
- 35:48Speaker 3: that has all the survey data in it, the.
- 35:52Speaker 2: I fish what what is the the onyx.
- 35:56Speaker 3: On ex fish fish app has. I think they have
- 36:00Speaker 3: Wisconsin and Minnesota and I think they just dropped Ohio recently.
- 36:05Speaker 3: But yeah, you can go on there and look at
- 36:07Speaker 3: different lakes and see trophy potential. But I mean Fort
- 36:13Speaker 3: Peck and Eerie are both great fisheries. But I'm not
- 36:18Speaker 3: sure where you live, but there might be places a
- 36:22Speaker 3: lot closer to home. Great good luck, I hope you
- 36:27Speaker 3: beat it. Hey, Jamie, your Amber would your Amber your
- 36:32Speaker 3: wife Amber would like us to say hi to you. Hi,
- 36:34Speaker 3: thanks for being a watcher and a listener.
- 36:36Speaker 2: Shout out, shout out, Jamie Thibodeaux.
- 36:39Speaker 3: There you go.
- 36:39Speaker 2: Assuming you have the same last name as your wife.
- 36:41Speaker 6: Ralph asks cal A couple of months ago you were
- 36:44Speaker 6: on and talking about boots. You said, always get a
- 36:46Speaker 6: good pair of insuls. I am in the market for
- 36:48Speaker 6: some insuls and would love a recommendation if you have any. Thanks, boy, Yeah.
- 36:54Speaker 1: Go some place where you can kind of get an
- 36:58Speaker 1: idea of what you're in s dep is and then
- 37:03Speaker 1: you like, you know, the I don't know what they
- 37:05Speaker 1: call a little footboard things any like kind of nice
- 37:11Speaker 1: boot shop has something like this, and they oftentimes have
- 37:16Speaker 1: an assortment of all the insoles out there too, and
- 37:21Speaker 1: and the difference between the insuls is like cushion, but
- 37:25Speaker 1: also how it fits the arch of your foot. And
- 37:30Speaker 1: you know, like all good things in life, it takes
- 37:32Speaker 1: a little little do one, little little time invested on
- 37:35Speaker 1: your part. But uh yeah, fine, final one that that
- 37:39Speaker 1: feels comfy and and eliminates that foot slide and you'll
- 37:44Speaker 1: be in good shape if.
- 37:46Speaker 3: If for alf lives in central Pennsylvania. Little shameless plug
- 37:49Speaker 3: for the family, but definitely Center Boot Company, they'll get you,
- 37:52Speaker 3: They'll get your squared away. Cool.
- 37:55Speaker 6: Let's do one more yeah before the next segment. Here
- 37:58Speaker 6: is from mad Sean a question for the crew for
- 38:01Speaker 6: mid October Hunts. How do you adjust calling an approach
- 38:03Speaker 6: when hunting elk? He specifically says, Roosevelt elk but in
- 38:07Speaker 6: dense coastal forest compared to rocky Mountain environs.
- 38:11Speaker 2: Sounds like a question for old Ryan Callahan.
- 38:14Speaker 3: Boy, let's call Jason Phelps.
- 38:19Speaker 1: Boy.
- 38:20Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't.
- 38:21Speaker 1: I don't know much about Roosevelt elk. I would love
- 38:24Speaker 1: to go over there and hunt those things. They're super cool.
- 38:28Speaker 3: I do know that calling.
- 38:30Speaker 1: Calling works, is just hard to hear them because the
- 38:34Speaker 1: foliage is so dense. Late or sorry, early to mid
- 38:40Speaker 1: October around here is typically when the herds are are
- 38:44Speaker 1: built up and they're bigger, and that means they are
- 38:47Speaker 1: more vocal, so you have a good chance of locating
- 38:54Speaker 1: elk because they're more talkative. And then cow calls, calcaf
- 38:59Speaker 1: calls and combo can bring in satellite and raghorn bowls
- 39:03Speaker 1: on the fringe, which most of the time when I'm
- 39:06Speaker 1: hunting elk, I'm hunting broadside elk. I don't need to
- 39:10Speaker 1: go find the big herd bull because I want to
- 39:12Speaker 1: put that sucker in my freezer and then worry about
- 39:15Speaker 1: mule deer.
- 39:16Speaker 3: I agree, can agree more.
- 39:20Speaker 2: Thank you, Phil, and for those of you in the chat.
- 39:24Speaker 2: Keep them coming, Please keep them coming. We'll hit it again.
- 39:28Speaker 2: Our next segment is Hot tip Off.
- 39:33Speaker 3: Yeah that's salty, Yeah that's salty.
- 39:47Speaker 2: Hot tip Off is where two listeners go head to
- 39:49Speaker 2: head with competing pieces of advice and after we hear
- 39:53Speaker 2: each tip, will declare which one is hotter. I think
- 39:56Speaker 2: we should change that to read and after we hear
- 39:59Speaker 2: both tips. If you have a hot tip, take a
- 40:04Speaker 2: one minute video on your phone and email it to
- 40:06Speaker 2: radio at the meeteater dot com with the subject line
- 40:09Speaker 2: hot Tipoff. This week, Hot tip Off is brought to
- 40:13Speaker 2: you by Mountain Oopsnops. Mountain Oops supports your daily journey
- 40:17Speaker 2: from mountain training to overall well being, optimizing performance, enhancing recovery,
- 40:22Speaker 2: and bolstering health, preparing you for any challenge. Today's competitors
- 40:26Speaker 2: are Chad in Coorvia from Eagle, Idaho and Nick Moroldy
- 40:31Speaker 2: from Cragsmore, New York, and they're competing for the Meat
- 40:34Speaker 2: Eater Classic Bison Hoodie. Folks in the chat, please chime
- 40:38Speaker 2: in let's see those hot tips.
- 40:40Speaker 3: Phil Nick Maroldy.
- 40:47Speaker 7: Hey guys, it is Nick coming with a hot tip,
- 40:51Speaker 7: so good way to start training for your season and
- 40:55Speaker 7: get your kids outdoors at the same time. See here,
- 40:58Speaker 7: I got my little guy in the chest carrier. I
- 41:02Speaker 7: got my little girl in the osprey backpack. This is
- 41:05Speaker 7: a great workout that's self progressing. So I started with
- 41:09Speaker 7: just the one progress to two. It's gonna have to
- 41:13Speaker 7: get a little creative if we have three or as
- 41:16Speaker 7: this one gets too big for the chess carrier. But again,
- 41:20Speaker 7: self progressing workout gets your kids excited to be outside,
- 41:24Speaker 7: and it gets you some points with the wife because
- 41:26Speaker 7: she's got a couple hours to not.
- 41:29Speaker 8: Have anybody hanging off of her. All right, I hope
- 41:31Speaker 8: you enjoyed. Take care, Chad in corfy up, hi.
- 41:40Speaker 9: Me eater wanted to spit a hot tip. I'm preparing
- 41:42Speaker 9: to head down to Utah for an elk hunt, and
- 41:44Speaker 9: in putting my kill kit together, I got my.
- 41:47Speaker 4: Meat hanging string.
- 41:48Speaker 9: This is waxed nine strand string used for a lot
- 41:52Speaker 9: of commercial purposes. Has a weight rating of about one
- 41:55Speaker 9: hundred and forty pounds. I'll hang an elk quarter off
- 41:58Speaker 9: one strand of that. See it's waxed, so it holds
- 42:01Speaker 9: its shape pretty good. Makes it easy to tie knots.
- 42:04Speaker 9: This twelve foot piece I just weighed is about four
- 42:06Speaker 9: and a half grams or point one six ounces. To
- 42:09Speaker 9: show you how strong it is, I have a piece
- 42:11Speaker 9: hanging up here and a makeshift pull apart. I weigh
- 42:15Speaker 9: about two hundred and thirty pounds and you can see
- 42:17Speaker 9: just a couple strands.
- 42:18Speaker 2: It carries it well, no problem.
- 42:23Speaker 9: So instead of pair of cord or other heavy ropes,
- 42:26Speaker 9: grab yourself some waxed nine strand.
- 42:29Speaker 3: Col h fine based off his garage there he has
- 42:33Speaker 3: some experience. Yeah that guy killed. Smell guy looks like
- 42:36Speaker 3: a killer. Yeah, he borrowed a lot of hell.
- 42:41Speaker 6: The poll is live in the chat. You guys are
- 42:44Speaker 6: picking the winners of two different contests today. I feel
- 42:47Speaker 6: like we're giving you too much power.
- 42:49Speaker 2: But yeah, I want to strip some of power from
- 42:52Speaker 2: them and appropriate it to ourselves. But yeah, get get
- 42:57Speaker 2: in there and vote. I you know, beyond honest. I
- 43:01Speaker 2: liked the joke about this being a self What did
- 43:05Speaker 2: he call? How did he describe his workout?
- 43:07Speaker 3: Self progressing?
- 43:08Speaker 2: Self progressing workout? It's very clever. Yeah, Plus he probably
- 43:11Speaker 2: gets to eat a lot of like cheerios and stuff
- 43:13Speaker 2: that they drop on the ground. The one worry I have, though,
- 43:18Speaker 2: is that. Whenever I see someone with baby on their
- 43:21Speaker 2: back or on their chest, I'm like, Okay, that's good.
- 43:23Speaker 2: They know if they fall they can go that way
- 43:26Speaker 2: or that way opposite the baby. Right when you got
- 43:29Speaker 2: babies on all sides, he can either go left or right. Yeah,
- 43:32Speaker 2: you gotta go left or right. And that's not good
- 43:34Speaker 2: for the old rotator cuff.
- 43:36Speaker 1: Nope, you guys doing anything too dangerous? Too dangerous, why
- 43:39Speaker 1: you won't be doing that particular training actors.
- 43:42Speaker 2: Precisely precisely, it seems like. And also I'm far behind
- 43:47Speaker 2: this man in uh in his development of his equipment.
- 43:52Speaker 2: So you guys doing any uh, doing any hiking, doing
- 43:56Speaker 2: any getting prepped for the old season.
- 44:00Speaker 1: I've been so short on time. I have been just
- 44:05Speaker 1: trying to like bust out on trail runs. I mean,
- 44:08Speaker 1: as much as possible daily, if possible. But I put
- 44:13Speaker 1: the shortened time there because I'm trying to make myself
- 44:16Speaker 1: feel as poorly as possible with the least amount of time.
- 44:20Speaker 1: Otherwise hiking would be good. I do some running a
- 44:25Speaker 1: couple times a week and then hit the weights a
- 44:26Speaker 1: couple times a week.
- 44:28Speaker 4: See you in here.
- 44:29Speaker 3: It's really it's not like a season prep. It's just
- 44:31Speaker 3: like general maintenance for my entire life. So this poll
- 44:37Speaker 3: is could not be closer. So you have not voted,
- 44:41Speaker 3: you can tip the scales, so you get in there.
- 44:43Speaker 3: They're gonna end in about thirty seconds here.
- 44:45Speaker 2: If there are fewer than three hundred votes out of
- 44:49Speaker 2: our audience of three hundred and fifty three, I'll be
- 44:51Speaker 2: sorely disappointed voting as you're right as an American, and
- 44:55Speaker 2: it's unconscionable that people don't participate when given the option.
- 45:00Speaker 3: Yeah, what are the voting statistics the opportunity?
- 45:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know. I mean, I just think it's embarrassing,
- 45:07Speaker 2: like people, you know, vote three hundred and sixty one.
- 45:10Speaker 2: Come on, get in there. I'd like to see three
- 45:12Speaker 2: hundred and twenty votes. Uh yeah, I like the guy
- 45:18Speaker 2: mentions he carries it. Well, that was one of my
- 45:20Speaker 2: I thought that guy two hundred and thirty pounds I
- 45:22Speaker 2: got stacked.
- 45:23Speaker 3: Looks great, I got stacked.
- 45:24Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, we'll give this ten more seconds. I
- 45:28Speaker 2: have not been doing much preparation or training. I've been
- 45:32Speaker 2: on a real downhill slide since visiting Germany two months ago.
- 45:36Speaker 2: Just gotten a lot of bad habits in terms of
- 45:38Speaker 2: what I'm putting in my body, and I feel it
- 45:40Speaker 2: every day when I wake up.
- 45:43Speaker 1: I mean the Ohio trip. I didn't want to say
- 45:46Speaker 1: anything on that note.
- 45:47Speaker 6: I was going to ask if you wanted to go
- 45:48Speaker 6: a Guta lounda trip after the recording.
- 45:50Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I could be talked into that. I could
- 45:52Speaker 2: be talking. Yeah, yeah, I actually didn't. I mean, thankfully,
- 45:56Speaker 2: I didn't drink that much Ohio. I just ate a
- 45:58Speaker 2: lot of cheese.
- 45:58Speaker 3: I feel like I can't end there pole It's so close. Oh,
- 46:03Speaker 3: oh my god. Amount of cheese.
- 46:07Speaker 2: Is just a lot. You haven't even seen the VIDs yet.
- 46:10Speaker 1: And then the saltiness of the oh I feel like
- 46:14Speaker 1: it's so good. You're just entering one into your heart.
- 46:17Speaker 2: It's so good.
- 46:17Speaker 1: I don't pride myself on like overly healthful eating.
- 46:21Speaker 2: Yeah, but that that's tough. And Seth is the spouse
- 46:24Speaker 2: of an artist. You'll appreciate this. I found a painting
- 46:27Speaker 2: that I'd like to buy a print of, and it's
- 46:29Speaker 2: a Skyline chili parlor with a man dishing out Skyline
- 46:33Speaker 2: chili and Pete Rose is sitting there eating with him.
- 46:36Speaker 2: Joe Burrow, oh Mary Larkin Ken griffyr all the all
- 46:40Speaker 2: the Cincinnati like classic athletes, and they're just all enjoying
- 46:45Speaker 2: join a nice three way, Phil, How are we doing
- 46:47Speaker 2: on this pole?
- 46:47Speaker 3: I got it? Okay.
- 46:48Speaker 2: Oh, I'm describing artwork that I saw in a fast
- 46:50Speaker 2: food restaurant, so we should probably wrap it up.
- 46:52Speaker 3: I'm hoping you'll have another Instagram reel about your time
- 46:55Speaker 3: in Ohio eating these.
- 46:56Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 46:57Speaker 2: Yeah, I got to figure out. I forgot how to
- 46:58Speaker 2: do voiceovers, how to do the voice change on on voiceovers?
- 47:02Speaker 3: So oh, just YouTube, I got.
- 47:04Speaker 2: I got a I got a real coming of our
- 47:06Speaker 2: Costco hot dog run. I got a real comedy of
- 47:08Speaker 2: my Cincinnati trip with some hot stuff.
- 47:11Speaker 6: With just over fifty percent of the vote, like fifty
- 47:15Speaker 6: and a decimal points, the winner is Chad the wax
- 47:19Speaker 6: string for hanging whoa.
- 47:23Speaker 3: I wasn't expecting it. In Corvi, it was back and
- 47:26Speaker 3: forth for a while. I am interested in that doesn't
- 47:30Speaker 3: always win, That's what That's why I.
- 47:32Speaker 2: End up carrying so much paracord. I've got like my
- 47:35Speaker 2: para cord to hang my food. I got my pair
- 47:37Speaker 2: cord to hang some meat. I got the paar coord
- 47:39Speaker 2: for just having paracord. You can just cut a little
- 47:42Speaker 2: bit of that out.
- 47:43Speaker 3: Parachord for hanging your para cord.
- 47:44Speaker 2: Yeah, just cut a little bit of that out with
- 47:46Speaker 2: this wax nine strand we'll be running.
- 47:49Speaker 6: And Chad for winning the hot tip Off, you will
- 47:52Speaker 6: be receiving this wonderful Meat Eater hoodie, bice and hoodie. Look,
- 47:57Speaker 6: I'm pretty sure we'll be getting a hold of you
- 47:59Speaker 6: to get your size and address information.
- 48:02Speaker 3: So yeah, I thank Yeah. If you would like to
- 48:05Speaker 3: submit a tip and win something like this wonderful Bison hoodie,
- 48:10Speaker 3: please submit your hot tips.
- 48:12Speaker 2: Radio at the meat Eater dot com with the subject
- 48:15Speaker 2: line hot tip off.
- 48:17Speaker 1: I thought you were actually asking me, Phil because I
- 48:20Speaker 1: don't own that sweater, and I was.
- 48:21Speaker 3: Like, well, I get I could, but I actually do
- 48:25Speaker 3: own that one. It's one of my favorites. It's thick.
- 48:30Speaker 2: Joining us on the line next is Ben Batton, Deputy
- 48:34Speaker 2: director of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, who is
- 48:37Speaker 2: coming to us live from Bozeman, Montana, at a meeting
- 48:41Speaker 2: of the Mississippi Interstate Cooperative Resource Association. Ben, Welcome to
- 48:45Speaker 2: the show.
- 48:46Speaker 6: So, so Ben was in the waiting room as you
- 48:49Speaker 6: said his name. I think he might have picked up
- 48:51Speaker 6: his phone to get ready and then accidentally left. So
- 48:54Speaker 6: we're gonna wait here for Ben to rejoin. Oh no,
- 48:57Speaker 6: I'm sure he's fine. I don't think it was anything
- 49:00Speaker 6: like a kidnapping.
- 49:01Speaker 2: He was very excited for this. He was he was
- 49:04Speaker 2: surprising if he'd abandoned us.
- 49:06Speaker 3: No, he was. I think he just accidentally left the room.
- 49:09Speaker 2: This, this is unexpected.
- 49:14Speaker 3: I was gonna say, we just saw Yeah, I just
- 49:16Speaker 3: saw him. He was right there. Well, we couldn't do
- 49:20Speaker 3: the trail cam contest while we.
- 49:21Speaker 2: Yeah, why don't we give something? Oh hey, Ben, how
- 49:29Speaker 2: are you sir?
- 49:31Speaker 10: All right, guys, you're not gonna believe this. I got
- 49:33Speaker 10: one for you. Here is the ultimate hot tip. I
- 49:37Speaker 10: was sitting out for you all and two seconds before
- 49:40Speaker 10: I go on, I get your phone's too hot?
- 49:44Speaker 2: Oh yeah, that that always seems to hit it the
- 49:47Speaker 2: wrong time.
- 49:49Speaker 10: I'm gonna hatty, you're in Boeman and I went and
- 49:53Speaker 10: dumped my phone.
- 49:59Speaker 2: That's commitment, that commitment to the show. We appreciate that, Ben.
- 50:03Speaker 3: Ben.
- 50:03Speaker 2: Can you tell our listeners who might not be familiar
- 50:06Speaker 2: with the Mississippi Interstate Cooperative Resource Association and I can
- 50:10Speaker 2: guarantee that it's most of them. Can you explain what
- 50:13Speaker 2: the organization is and who participates.
- 50:17Speaker 10: Yeah, absolutely, thanks again, guys around me on, I really
- 50:19Speaker 10: appreciate it. So MICRA is the leadership for fishery manager
- 50:24Speaker 10: throughout the Mississippi River basin. And so there's thirty one
- 50:28Speaker 10: states in the basin. We currently have twenty eight folks
- 50:31Speaker 10: and this is going to be what's called the Chief
- 50:33Speaker 10: of Fisheries. Every state fish and Game agency has you know,
- 50:37Speaker 10: some number of employees, but the head is usually called
- 50:40Speaker 10: the chief.
- 50:41Speaker 3: So it's those folks.
- 50:42Speaker 10: We also have federal agencies like US Fish and Wildlife Service,
- 50:46Speaker 10: US Geological Survey on for Tennessee Valley Authority, folks like that.
- 50:50Speaker 10: And then of course all the tribes within the basin
- 50:52Speaker 10: are welcome. And basically, in short, the purpose of MICRA
- 50:57Speaker 10: is to do it we can coordinating inner jurisdictional fish species.
- 51:03Speaker 2: Gotcha, What are some of the challenges or projects that
- 51:07Speaker 2: you're currently working on as an organization?
- 51:11Speaker 10: All right, Well, I think what makes the Missing River
- 51:14Speaker 10: basin awesome is also some of the biggest challenges. I
- 51:17Speaker 10: mean one point two million square miles three hundred and
- 51:21Speaker 10: twenty million acres, you know, the Missippi River basin. Every
- 51:24Speaker 10: drop of water that goes from the east side of
- 51:26Speaker 10: the Rockies to the west side of the Appalachians ends
- 51:29Speaker 10: up in the Gulf. So it's just gigantic. It's the
- 51:33Speaker 10: fourth largest basin in the planet after the Amazon, Congo
- 51:37Speaker 10: and the Nile. So scale here is a challenge. Also
- 51:41Speaker 10: neat is that you know, a fish can swim from
- 51:43Speaker 10: the Gulf twelve hundred miles without ever running into anything.
- 51:46Speaker 10: Take a left and head up the Missouri all the
- 51:48Speaker 10: way to Gavin's Points South Dakota another eight hundred miles,
- 51:51Speaker 10: so two thousand miles a fish can swim before ever
- 51:54Speaker 10: hitting a dam. But that's the best case in the
- 51:57Speaker 10: in the in the area, I mean, there's dams and
- 52:00Speaker 10: things like that that you know, mess with fish passage
- 52:04Speaker 10: and fish being able to move. We love working on
- 52:07Speaker 10: on a positive native fish species, you know, big cool
- 52:11Speaker 10: things like cattlefish and sturgeon and things like that, catfish,
- 52:15Speaker 10: et cetera. But probably our biggest drain on our energy
- 52:19Speaker 10: is the invasive part issue that is most of the basin.
- 52:24Speaker 2: Gotcha, Now, I understand that the micro's currently working towards
- 52:30Speaker 2: being recognized by Congress. What does that recognition mean and
- 52:34Speaker 2: what does that process involve.
- 52:37Speaker 10: Yeah, that's great. I appreciate you guys checking on. So
- 52:40Speaker 10: the goal of this, it's an association, so we just
- 52:42Speaker 10: all exist by a bunch of signatures of you know,
- 52:46Speaker 10: fisheries group leadership. But our goal since nineteen ninety one
- 52:50Speaker 10: and establishment was to become a commission and basically that
- 52:54Speaker 10: recognition would give us one just more stature and influence.
- 52:57Speaker 10: So you know, a letter to Congress or some from
- 53:01Speaker 10: this association doesn't carry near as much weight as it
- 53:03Speaker 10: does from the Mississippi River Basin Fishery Commission. And then
- 53:08Speaker 10: the biggest probably is funding and resource. I think you know,
- 53:11Speaker 10: you guys talk all the time. I don't think you
- 53:13Speaker 10: find anybody that's a manager across the country that would
- 53:16Speaker 10: say they have enough resource to you know, for the challenges.
- 53:20Speaker 10: And so this draft legislation that we have right now
- 53:23Speaker 10: asks for in years two through five of existing thirty
- 53:27Speaker 10: million dollars a year for the basin and then fifty
- 53:30Speaker 10: million on after that. So a significant amount of resource
- 53:33Speaker 10: that would help us out. Kind of you ask where,
- 53:36Speaker 10: you know, what does it take? So we currently have
- 53:38Speaker 10: draft bills both the House and the Senate on the
- 53:41Speaker 10: Senate side, it's Bill ten seventy eight with sponsors from
- 53:45Speaker 10: Senator Wicker and Mississippi, Boseman in Arkansas, and Baldwin and Wisconsin.
- 53:50Speaker 10: And then on the House side fifteen fourteen the companion
- 53:52Speaker 10: bill with Congressman ezelf and Mississippi and Carter of Louisiana.
- 53:57Speaker 10: And we're currently looking for more sponsors. So if you
- 54:00Speaker 10: are somebody out there that has connections there and we
- 54:03Speaker 10: work with coalitions, it's just something you do on these bills,
- 54:06Speaker 10: and so there will be groups you all are very
- 54:08Speaker 10: familiar with, like BHA, Teddy Roosevelt Conservation Partnership, National Wildlife Federation,
- 54:14Speaker 10: and American Sport Fish Association are all working with us
- 54:17Speaker 10: to get this stick going good deal.
- 54:19Speaker 2: And are there other interstate conservation partnerships that serve as
- 54:24Speaker 2: a model for this approach and what have you learned
- 54:26Speaker 2: from them?
- 54:28Speaker 10: Yeah? Great question. So there's four existing fishery commissions. There's
- 54:32Speaker 10: Gulf States, Pacific States, Atlantic States, and then the Great
- 54:35Speaker 10: Lakes and those have all been around since somewhere between
- 54:38Speaker 10: the late forties and the late fifties, and we visited
- 54:41Speaker 10: with each of their leadership as we were doing this
- 54:44Speaker 10: for kind of some Hey, what would you do differently?
- 54:46Speaker 10: What worked great? That kind of thing, and so that
- 54:48Speaker 10: was super helpful and we mostly patterned ours off the
- 54:52Speaker 10: Great Lakes Commission and then probably the best known ination
- 54:56Speaker 10: with is the Flyway Council system that manages water sure
- 55:00Speaker 10: here in North America.
- 55:05Speaker 2: Looking forward, what's what's on the horizon? Obviously you're working
- 55:10Speaker 2: towards recognition, but but sort of what is the what's
- 55:13Speaker 2: the discussion there about what's what's in the future for
- 55:16Speaker 2: the for micro Yeah, we'll continue.
- 55:19Speaker 10: To operate as we have for thirty four years, again
- 55:22Speaker 10: coordinating and doing our best to manage you know, inner
- 55:25Speaker 10: jurisdictional fisheries. Uh, but we're going to continue to go
- 55:29Speaker 10: to the hill a couple of times a year DC
- 55:31Speaker 10: and you know, beat the offices and try to get
- 55:34Speaker 10: in there and get this bill across the lines.
- 55:37Speaker 2: Great. Well been On a final note here, Arkansas was
- 55:41Speaker 2: just in the news for its first bear attack in
- 55:44Speaker 2: uh what I understand to be some twenty five years.
- 55:46Speaker 2: Can you tell us a little bit about the facts
- 55:48Speaker 2: of the incident and how if in any way Arkansas
- 55:52Speaker 2: Game and Fish is responding.
- 55:55Speaker 10: Yeah, sure, so, Uh, yesterday in West central Arkansas, there
- 56:01Speaker 10: was an older gentleman working on a gravel road on
- 56:04Speaker 10: a tracker doing some work, and he was working with
- 56:07Speaker 10: his son who was a little bit out of out
- 56:10Speaker 10: of eyesight. Son comes back, finds the dad on the
- 56:13Speaker 10: ground and there's a bear attacking. Able to stop that,
- 56:18Speaker 10: and game fish was obviously immediately called. They're heading up
- 56:22Speaker 10: and about twenty minutes later they get there and they
- 56:24Speaker 10: end up dispatching the bear. You know, it was a
- 56:27Speaker 10: young bear, which is really rare that it was a yearling.
- 56:30Speaker 10: They did eighty to one hundred pounds, and you know,
- 56:34Speaker 10: just want to emphasize it's really a rare deal and
- 56:36Speaker 10: especially for to be a young bear. And of course,
- 56:40Speaker 10: you know, all of our thoughts are with the family
- 56:42Speaker 10: of victim and everything else, and hope that he makes
- 56:45Speaker 10: a successful recovery.
- 56:47Speaker 2: Yeah, same same here. Ben, Thanks so much for taking
- 56:51Speaker 2: the time to speak with us today and best of
- 56:54Speaker 2: luck to you in the work of micro here.
- 56:57Speaker 10: Appreciate the time. Thanks guys.
- 56:59Speaker 3: Yep, we'll see.
- 57:03Speaker 1: I heard that stuff happens all the time in Arkansas
- 57:06Speaker 1: from Clay. Yeah, cougars, bear attacks, bigfoots, panthers.
- 57:12Speaker 2: Yeah, I get the impression from Clay that Arkansas is
- 57:15Speaker 2: like the wild West.
- 57:16Speaker 3: Yeah, well, sorry, Randall, did me to cut you off?
- 57:19Speaker 4: Ye?
- 57:19Speaker 3: Please?
- 57:20Speaker 6: Feeling to appreciate before Just we have an update from
- 57:22Speaker 6: our winner, Chad Uh. He referenced to Hunt that he
- 57:26Speaker 6: was about to go on and this was the outcome. Nope,
- 57:30Speaker 6: not that clever? Is it not working?
- 57:34Speaker 3: To nice? Chad? You're even wearing the right stuff. Good
- 57:40Speaker 3: for you, buddy man, that's probably why you know.
- 57:44Speaker 2: That's exciting.
- 57:45Speaker 3: Just why are we sitting here?
- 57:46Speaker 2: I know, why are four?
- 57:48Speaker 3: It's September beautiful.
- 57:50Speaker 2: And I bet that I bet that wax nine strand
- 57:52Speaker 2: uh handle those quarters nicely.
- 57:55Speaker 1: Yeah, Chad, if I were you, I'd just roll around
- 57:58Speaker 1: on that underside of that bowl so you can take
- 58:00Speaker 1: that smell home with you for months.
- 58:03Speaker 3: Oh I love it. I love it.
- 58:05Speaker 2: Thanks for sharing, Phil. That really added to the depth
- 58:07Speaker 2: and richness of this program.
- 58:09Speaker 3: Yeah, Jake, Yeah, my producer reminded me about that. Thanks.
- 58:12Speaker 3: Oh good job teamwork behind the bench there.
- 58:14Speaker 2: Oh yeah, it's now time for our trailcam photo contest,
- 58:18Speaker 2: presented by our friends at Moultrie. Speaking of Moultrie, you
- 58:22Speaker 2: really should check out their new Edge three. We recently
- 58:25Speaker 2: got to learn about this latest and greatest Moultrie camera
- 58:27Speaker 2: and it is super impressive. Plus they've got even more
- 58:30Speaker 2: exciting cameras coming soon. For this second round, we asked
- 58:35Speaker 2: you folks to send us your big bull elk photos
- 58:38Speaker 2: captured from your trail cameras. We got loads of submissions
- 58:42Speaker 2: on the met Eater website, so choosing these top four
- 58:45Speaker 2: contenders was difficult, to say the least. There are a
- 58:48Speaker 2: lot of fighting balls, impressive racks, and bachelor herds to
- 58:51Speaker 2: wet your appetite for fall hunting. The winner will receive
- 58:56Speaker 2: two Edge two First Light Spector Camo addition multi street
- 59:00Speaker 2: cameras with ten watts what ten watt solar power pack
- 59:05Speaker 2: bundles and a two hundred and fifty dollars gift card
- 59:07Speaker 2: to the meat Eater store and a two hundred and
- 59:09Speaker 2: fifty dollars gift card to First Light and a case
- 59:12Speaker 2: Knive's Brent Reeves signature mini trapper knife.
- 59:17Speaker 3: You got Brent Reeves in the chat today?
- 59:19Speaker 2: My goodness, how many watts watts? Ten?
- 59:23Speaker 3: Ten?
- 59:24Speaker 1: Great Scott, Yeah, Phil was sleeping on that.
- 59:31Speaker 3: I mean, that's a gimme.
- 59:33Speaker 2: I I just saw ten w and I second guessed
- 59:36Speaker 2: myself in the moment, you know electricity. I'm like a
- 59:39Speaker 2: medieval peasant when it comes to talking about watts and amps.
- 59:41Speaker 3: And I.
- 59:43Speaker 1: Do not enjoy the use of trail cameras other than
- 59:47Speaker 1: the fun stuff like the you know, it's like it
- 59:53Speaker 1: takes some of the mystery out of the woods. But
- 59:55Speaker 1: at the same time, I also am jealous of not
- 59:58Speaker 1: getting constant email update. It's of cool stuff walking around
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: the woods. Yeah, it's a real conundrum.
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: Oh yeah, Phil, would you show us our top contenders please?
- 1:00:08Speaker 3: I'd love to. This is number one. Gosh, this is
- 1:00:15Speaker 3: from at seven sixteen three oh seven? What would you
- 1:00:18Speaker 3: title that? Phil? Well, luckily we've got a title. It's
- 1:00:21Speaker 3: called Brothers. Oh, it's beautiful.
- 1:00:24Speaker 6: I don't know if Jake, if Jake titled these ones
- 1:00:27Speaker 6: or the people who sent them in, I would guess
- 1:00:29Speaker 6: just Jake. I don't know if everyone has settled it.
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: But it's cousin how we should have had a guest
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: spot with well Kelsey Morris in here?
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: Yeah this actually?
- 1:00:37Speaker 3: Would you title this beautifully? She's good at that stuff.
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: What do we got? What do we got?
- 1:00:41Speaker 3: Number two? That's number one here? I will start a
- 1:00:44Speaker 3: pull after we view all of the.
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: Yeah, remember, folks, you are choosing the winner that hefty,
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: hefty prize.
- 1:00:50Speaker 3: Package, insane price package. Okay. Number two is this from
- 1:00:53Speaker 3: brockwe wad Box's great.
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: Wow, that's yeah, crowny out. Yeah yeah, he's not gonna
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: be like that for long better sticking fast, too many points.
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: The surface of the water is really beautiful. You can
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: see the reflection of some of the trees.
- 1:01:13Speaker 3: There's water in that photo, all right. Number three this
- 1:01:19Speaker 3: is from Heath Myers. Got butting heads actions. There's stuff
- 1:01:23Speaker 3: going on in the background too. Yeah. Yeah, another Raghorn
- 1:01:26Speaker 3: back there to the left.
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: But these guys are putting on a real show.
- 1:01:31Speaker 3: Yeah, butting heads is kind of lazy.
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: We can do better than that.
- 1:01:34Speaker 3: What else we have?
- 1:01:35Speaker 6: Well, our producer Jake said that he titled all these
- 1:01:37Speaker 6: so good. Good job Jake, Jake, you yeah, do better.
- 1:01:42Speaker 6: Let's see all right, So that's the old tangled up
- 1:01:46Speaker 6: Number four, Winter Wonder I cut off to the borders,
- 1:01:50Speaker 6: cutting these titles off.
- 1:01:51Speaker 3: That's that's on me. Winter. This is from Cage Rosen.
- 1:01:55Speaker 3: That's a that's a or KD. Rosen. I don't know.
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: A stark image.
- 1:01:59Speaker 3: That's a good looking bull silhouetted nicely.
- 1:02:03Speaker 6: Okay, I'm going to start this poll and then I
- 1:02:06Speaker 6: will go through all of the photos again. You guys
- 1:02:08Speaker 6: talk about them while I type up this pole here.
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: Oh to me, there's a clear winner. Yes, yeah, same really, yeah,
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: for sure.
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: Say it at the same time two the brothers. There's disagreement. Yeah,
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: I'd call it before the Rain my title Before the Rain.
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: Waiting out there in that pond late Bogs Brothers is
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: really I mean, if I took that photo with a
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: handheld camera, I'd show everybody it's beautiful.
- 1:02:42Speaker 3: Plus yeah, the back it is beautiful. Yeah. All right,
- 1:02:46Speaker 3: I'm starting the poll and we'll go through the pictures again.
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: But there's something haunting about that last image.
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: I do like the last one, Like look at the backdrop. Yeah,
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: the fact that you're not staring at a big muddy
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: water hole.
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: You can see this nice because you can.
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: Get wild animals like looking wild on this.
- 1:03:06Speaker 2: I really appreciate that. The gate of these bulls too.
- 1:03:10Speaker 3: Yeah, can't get wild animals looking wild in a pond. No,
- 1:03:14Speaker 3: they're just you know, it's like.
- 1:03:17Speaker 6: Looks like there should be some Sam comments that he
- 1:03:19Speaker 6: votes for in korvia The Big The Big in Korva,
- 1:03:23Speaker 6: the big one.
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: Yeah, Chad, we kind of we kind of popped this
- 1:03:26Speaker 2: balloon already with a big dead bull.
- 1:03:28Speaker 3: Yeah, Phil, let me get through.
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: Let me get number two again, right, So.
- 1:03:32Speaker 3: That's number one, so I can wade bogs. Number two.
- 1:03:35Speaker 3: That's the one in the water here.
- 1:03:36Speaker 2: Oh oh yeah.
- 1:03:39Speaker 3: And then we've got number three butting heads. And that's
- 1:03:42Speaker 3: a pretty picture.
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: That's just fun. That's just darn fun. October twentieth.
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: It's where the kids hang out right there.
- 1:03:49Speaker 3: Yeah. And then Winter Wonder number four. It's good looking.
- 1:03:54Speaker 3: I mean, it's it's an amazing al It is nine degrees.
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: Twenty nine oh yeah, yeah, twenty nine fahrenheit. I was
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: like you, Celsius.
- 1:04:02Speaker 3: The only thing that I just noticed about number two
- 1:04:04Speaker 3: the one that I voted for, and is uh is
- 1:04:08Speaker 3: it a trail camp photo. We've got the quality photo. Yeah,
- 1:04:14Speaker 3: I can't see the bottom out the border. I don't
- 1:04:16Speaker 3: think the original photo had any timestamps.
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: Seth, you can't accuse one of our contestants of.
- 1:04:21Speaker 3: Sure you can't. I like number one, Okay, Cow's vote
- 1:04:27Speaker 3: is for Brothers. Number one. That says adventure.
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: But what's really important is what the audience thinks is
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: number is the winner.
- 1:04:34Speaker 3: It doesn't matter what us.
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: Remember, you guys need to get in that in that poll.
- 1:04:38Speaker 6: Only I can see the results right now we've got
- 1:04:40Speaker 6: I don't I don't think this is going to swing.
- 1:04:42Speaker 6: We've got a pretty clear winner. But I'll let this
- 1:04:44Speaker 6: run for another minute. If you guys want to get
- 1:04:46Speaker 6: some last minute votes in.
- 1:04:47Speaker 3: Here, yeah, yeah, no, I feel like Randal, do you
- 1:04:50Speaker 3: have a preference?
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: Well, I just think number one is very tough to
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: If those bulls were a little more impressive, it would
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: just do it for me.
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: Well, this is the last thing I'm gonna say. None
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: of these animals are guaranteed to be there when you
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: show up, right, So number one is like, man, could
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: be anywhere, look at this country, but I know they're
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: here somewhere. And then if we go to number two,
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: like I'm gonna be stuck staring at this mud hole
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: all day.
- 1:05:23Speaker 3: Yeah, you can just go there and get them, Yeah,
- 1:05:26Speaker 3: there and get them. I like getting them.
- 1:05:28Speaker 2: Yeah, this just uh speaks to my heart, I think.
- 1:05:32Speaker 6: But got several people in the chat saying that number
- 1:05:35Speaker 6: one looks fake, and I don't know if it's just
- 1:05:39Speaker 6: the stream you guys are seeing, but this looks like
- 1:05:41Speaker 6: a pretty legitimate trail camp picture.
- 1:05:43Speaker 4: To me.
- 1:05:43Speaker 3: It does look legit.
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: That's just what Montana looks like everywhere or wherever.
- 1:05:48Speaker 6: This is all right, I'm putting an end of the
- 1:05:49Speaker 6: poll because one like one of these photos ran away
- 1:05:52Speaker 6: with it.
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: Oh, let's do the CNN is now calling.
- 1:05:56Speaker 6: Yeah, that's right, we're prepared to call Markopa County. The
- 1:06:00Speaker 6: results are in the voting and the winner with forty
- 1:06:04Speaker 6: percent of.
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: The almost half of the vote.
- 1:06:06Speaker 3: Yeah, clear winner number one. Brother.
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: I hope we didn't taint. I hope we didn't taint
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: the vote.
- 1:06:15Speaker 3: Sold it was to take Yeah, I think is encouraged.
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: Right, Well, congratulations to at seven one six underscore three
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: oh seven. So it probably is a while.
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: And just so everybody else, anything discussed on this podcast
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: is our right to make it a T shirt, So
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: tainting is encouraged as Yeah, that's ours be encouraged.
- 1:06:36Speaker 3: Taint is on a T shirt is encouraged.
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: Oh man, well, well gang, uh you know, congratulations to
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: seven one six, three oh seven. You've got a heck
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: of a prize package coming your way. Please say thanks
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: to the audience if you if you find yourself in
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: the chat in the future, because well, you're you've got
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: some trail cams, you've got some gift cards, you've got
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: a Brent Reeves signature knife headed your way, and I
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: just closed out my script accidents.
- 1:07:03Speaker 3: We got listener feedback, I got left.
- 1:07:07Speaker 6: Yeah, I've been missing some of the some of the
- 1:07:09Speaker 6: chat for the last few minutes that I've been running
- 1:07:10Speaker 6: other stuff.
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: You've been busy today, Phil, I hope you're doing all right.
- 1:07:13Speaker 6: Let's start with just a fun recreational one may ask
- 1:07:16Speaker 6: what's the crew's favorite non game or non target animal
- 1:07:19Speaker 6: to just watch observe while hunting.
- 1:07:23Speaker 3: Gray squirrels. Oh, they do weird stuff. Sometimes it's kind
- 1:07:28Speaker 3: of fun to watch easily.
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: Distracted and happily distracted bugs, horn toads, birds, doesn't matter.
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: I'm gonna we're gonna call this a non target animal
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: rather than non game animal. I'm gonna say a bear
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: watching bears do stuff. Yeah, it's have The fun of
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: bear hunting is just watching little bears fall off things,
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: tip things, over do things for no reason at all.
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: We had a crew of Swainson's hawks migrating through and
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: for whatever reason, they're very social, so kind of curious
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: I think they took note of the fact that I
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: was aggressively observing their behavior. Sure, this is very urban,
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: you know, greater fringe bos Angelus region here. And they
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: came down a ripped part of squirrel on top of
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: the fence. Oh yeah, I mean like twenty yard viewing.
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: It was fantastic. Wow, got the stabilized binos out and
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: it was great. It was eating right there with them,
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: three of them, really really really awesome. Merlin app had
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: was great, super fun.
- 1:08:39Speaker 6: Isaac is stoked about bo seasons starting in Missouri in
- 1:08:41Speaker 6: eleven days. Any sort of last minute rituals or things
- 1:08:45Speaker 6: you guys do in the last days before going into season.
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: Get all of the stuff done at home that is
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: expected of you to get.
- 1:08:52Speaker 3: Done eleven days before. Usually start shooting my bow about
- 1:08:57Speaker 3: that time. Now I'm kidding, Hope you're shooting for a
- 1:09:01Speaker 3: long time.
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: You've got You've got a good week and a half
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: to get your affairs in order so that you don't
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: get a phone call saying that you know you need
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: to come home to do this. Do that, you know,
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: get you to find yourself in the good graces of
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: your family unit and look forward to the season.
- 1:09:17Speaker 3: Yeah, in Missouri.
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: You're probably starting your permethrone treatment right now, which I
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: think would be a crucial step to your game.
- 1:09:29Speaker 6: This is from j He says, as we are closing
- 1:09:31Speaker 6: in on many hunting seasons. If one makes a bad
- 1:09:33Speaker 6: shot on large game and it takes longer than ideal
- 1:09:36Speaker 6: to find said game, how do you determine what meat
- 1:09:39Speaker 6: needs to be cut out or lost when you finally harvest?
- 1:09:42Speaker 3: Smell stank, smell test it.
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: Yeah, and there's portions that can smell, and if those
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: portions smell strong enough, remove them from the rest of
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: the of the situation so the smell of that stuff
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: doesn't contaminate you're you're sniffer because there there's typically is
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: not all bad, and you need to salvage every edible
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: thing that you can.
- 1:10:11Speaker 6: This is one that I don't think we've gotten before.
- 1:10:12Speaker 6: But favorite wild game meet pizza topic. Russell says. His
- 1:10:16Speaker 6: is duck bacon and goossolami. Wow, he guys put a
- 1:10:19Speaker 6: game on pizza. Yeah, just sa sausage.
- 1:10:23Speaker 2: Yeah, we don't do a whole lot of homemade pizzas,
- 1:10:26Speaker 2: but yeah, I don't know elk nachos. It's almost pizza.
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: Joe asked cal scent cover yay or nay. Walk into
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: the wind. If you're stuck in a tree, like my
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: friend Mark Kenyon, just face into the wind.
- 1:10:46Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: We used to mess around with all that stuff and
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: it just is just more complicates life.
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: We should we should make a T shirt of Mark
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: in a tree and just his help. I'm stuck in
- 1:10:58Speaker 2: a tree. I'm Markon the host.
- 1:11:00Speaker 3: Of David asked Randall Pete rose Gay your name.
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean he's a slime ball, but he's our
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: slime ball.
- 1:11:12Speaker 6: Yeah, Clifford, how does the crew store their food in
- 1:11:17Speaker 6: Black Bear Mountain? Lyon Country lives in Arizona, so Brown
- 1:11:19Speaker 6: Bear isn't an issue? Do you suggest putting food in
- 1:11:21Speaker 6: the bag away from camp? I think the the general
- 1:11:25Speaker 6: thing to do is to hang it, right.
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: Yeah, hanging will just it's just going to solve issues.
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: Because if you leave, let's say you have a like
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: a dry bag or a stuff sack that you put
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: all your all your food in once you get to camp,
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: so you're organized and you're not packing around all your
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: food and you're in your hunting bag every day. A
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: squirrel is going to chew through that thing on the ground,
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: and then you got a mess to clean up, and
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: you lose stuff, and then you're in that situation of like, well,
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: now I got to eat something that it's world half
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: chewed on and hana virus and all that fun stuff.
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: So you hang your food, even if you're not worried.
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: It's just going to prevent other things from happening. And
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: as I like to say, I'm totally fine if a
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: bear kills me. That's but I don't I'm not fine
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: if in the article it says.
- 1:12:22Speaker 3: Didn't hang his food. Yep, and then I get lumped
- 1:12:24Speaker 3: in like somebody who didn't know what was going on
- 1:12:27Speaker 3: in the woods.
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: Yep. It's just a wherever you can prevent a headache,
- 1:12:33Speaker 2: like having something chewed through your backpack or whatever else,
- 1:12:36Speaker 2: like prevent those headaches because something else is going to
- 1:12:38Speaker 2: go wrong inevitably.
- 1:12:39Speaker 3: Yeah, self, I wouldn't worry about mountain lions. What do
- 1:12:46Speaker 3: you got, Phil? What do you got?
- 1:12:47Speaker 2: Phil?
- 1:12:47Speaker 3: Here we go?
- 1:12:48Speaker 6: I feel a roll now, Yeah, real quick one for me.
- 1:12:51Speaker 6: We get this question a lot videos on Spotify. We
- 1:12:54Speaker 6: have no plans is not going to happen anytime soon,
- 1:12:56Speaker 6: specifically just because of other agreements we've made for getting
- 1:13:00Speaker 6: on Spotify.
- 1:13:01Speaker 3: You can't.
- 1:13:02Speaker 6: It's very It's it's a pretty slick interface, cutting edge.
- 1:13:07Speaker 6: So when you just start, the audio of the video
- 1:13:08Speaker 6: just plays automatically and you can choose to turn that
- 1:13:11Speaker 6: on or off. Uh, Christopher catw what do you carry
- 1:13:15Speaker 6: in the field for your doggy first aid kit? And
- 1:13:18Speaker 6: where do you find any non typical items that you
- 1:13:20Speaker 6: pack up?
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: But you know, feed stores or your Murdochs or what
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: are they like the firm?
- 1:13:28Speaker 3: What is a.
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: Mountain supply Rocky mountain supply. Feed stores always have a
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: really awesome what is the tractor want.
- 1:13:37Speaker 3: Tractor supply supply?
- 1:13:39Speaker 2: Uh, that's hard place the tractor supplies.
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, anyway, they always have a good vet section.
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: It's typically around like livestock, but.
- 1:13:53Speaker 3: Hot tip for you.
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: Uh, you can go get doggy supplies there for uh boy,
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: like a fifth of what they're going to charge you
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: at the vet.
- 1:14:03Speaker 3: Uh.
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: So that's where I go. And I always have emt gel,
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: which is like a liquid suture that can get you
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: through some tough time.
- 1:14:15Speaker 3: Gauze.
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: I find a good tape that will stick to fur
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: for holding gauze in place, or you know like.
- 1:14:27Speaker 2: Get these big coband stuff.
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: Yeah, you get this like zipper, like ninety degree tears
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: in in dog hide from running into fence or corrugated
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: metal when they're going nuts after roosters and stuff in
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: that in that thick cover, and so you need something
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: that's gonna hold that flap down. And then I use
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: just good old fashioned iodine. Beta dye works well too,
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: and I just carry you like a small container that
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: this sounds like a lot of stuff, but it's really not.
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: You can pack it down nice and tight, and then
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: pseudo fat, pseudo fed is good. Not it's an anti histamine,
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: but it is something just like it makes us drowsy.
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: It can put a little chill into the dog when
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: you need it to get relaxed, like if you are
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: in a rattlesnake bite scenario, because you're not gonna suck
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: the venomount like in an old John Ford film. Eye wash,
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: a little bit of eye wash, just you know, you're
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: over the counter stuff that folks with the bad eyesight
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: used to flush their eyeballs out. That's like part of
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: our routine to keep dog's eyes looking good because they
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: pack a lot of seeds in there during hunting season,
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: especially when it's hot and dry, which unfortunately it often
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: is during bird season these days. So that little kit
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: right there will definitely get you through the hard times,
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: and you'll be able to package up your best buddy
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: and get them someplace pro or get them into a
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: good enough situation where they can keep hunting or walk
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: themselves out.
- 1:16:14Speaker 3: That's about really what you need. Hm. Great.
- 1:16:19Speaker 6: I've got a couple questions about the new Wisconsin Meat
- 1:16:23Speaker 6: Eater store. I don't think there's a specific opening date yet,
- 1:16:25Speaker 6: but I think one update is that I think we're
- 1:16:27Speaker 6: still hiring.
- 1:16:29Speaker 3: So yeah, if you're in the area, I.
- 1:16:31Speaker 2: Believe we're still hiring.
- 1:16:32Speaker 3: Check out and isn't There's gonna be.
- 1:16:35Speaker 2: A little opening celebration coordinating with our Tailgate tour stop
- 1:16:41Speaker 2: in Madison, well Chester, Floyd and Spencer Newharth nice. So
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: take a look at the Tailgate Tour schedule and I
- 1:16:50Speaker 2: think the event page for that we'll have some mention
- 1:16:54Speaker 2: of the event in Brookfield.
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: I would I'd love to make it over there myself.
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: He is a younger fella. I used to area. I
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: had several good times in Milwaukee. Nice people, good food,
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: lots of good the best.
- 1:17:06Speaker 3: Yeah, let's do one more. You guys have had some
- 1:17:10Speaker 3: great questions this week. Thanks.
- 1:17:11Speaker 6: I really appreciate it makes my job easier. But the
- 1:17:13Speaker 6: most important one for last Randall Top three zoos. This
- 1:17:17Speaker 6: is from Jackson.
- 1:17:19Speaker 2: Oh, I feel like this episode got way to Randall centric.
- 1:17:22Speaker 3: You are the host. Yeah, yeah, live it up, drink
- 1:17:25Speaker 3: it in. Well, let's see you were just that one.
- 1:17:29Speaker 2: Yeah. I was just at the Cincinnati Zoo. It's a
- 1:17:32Speaker 2: world class, phenomenal institution. The gorilla world is above and
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: beyond what I want when I go to look at primates,
- 1:17:41Speaker 2: specifically great apes. Probably my most favorite zoo visit in
- 1:17:46Speaker 2: recent memory was the shoon Gotten Zoo in Vienna, Austria.
- 1:17:51Speaker 2: If you've never been to a zoo in a foreign country,
- 1:17:54Speaker 2: I highly recommend it because you'll read things in a
- 1:17:57Speaker 2: foreign language, and all of a sudden, it feels a
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: lot more sophisticated than when you're just in you know,
- 1:18:03Speaker 2: some suburban neighborhood, drink a beer and looking at a tiger. Finally,
- 1:18:08Speaker 2: Gosh had some good visits to the San Francisco Zoo.
- 1:18:12Speaker 2: I don't know if it's if it's like strongly in
- 1:18:14Speaker 2: my top three, but I've had some great visits there. Again,
- 1:18:17Speaker 2: some really world class ape encounters, and it's just been
- 1:18:22Speaker 2: there for me when I needed it at a few
- 1:18:24Speaker 2: key points in my life. So I leave it at that.
- 1:18:27Speaker 2: Fantastic Thanks Jackson, your interest in zoological gardens is much appreciated.
- 1:18:35Speaker 3: Well gang.
- 1:18:35Speaker 2: That brings us to the end of today's show. It
- 1:18:38Speaker 2: was another fun one. Thanks to Mark and Ben for
- 1:18:41Speaker 2: joining us. And with that, we'll see you here next week.
- 1:18:45Speaker 3: Oh hey, I got one more thing for the audience.
- 1:18:47Speaker 3: If you're gonna be in the Manhattan area or.
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: Ideally if you live there Montana.
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: Oh not Montana, the New York City, Manhattan, I am
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: participating in a conservation event at the end of the
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: month at the Patagonia Store with Conservation Lands Foundation. And
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: my god, I just got to looking at the prices
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: of hotel rooms. If you need somebody to crash on
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: your couch, hou'll sit.
- 1:19:18Speaker 2: He'll tell you some stories. Yeah, and he actually does
- 1:19:21Speaker 2: a great job cleaning up after himself. My barn has
- 1:19:23Speaker 2: never looked better since Cal's been on a little trailer
- 1:19:26Speaker 2: working tear. So yeah, there you go, delightful guest. All right, folks,
- 1:19:32Speaker 2: we'll see you next week. Thanks for tuning in.
