Latest / DEEP INSIGHT / Trump provokes price-hiking trade war with Canada amid an affordability election
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: OK, everyone, with just 70 days till the midterm elections,
- 0:04Speaker 1: Donald Trump's policy strategy to keep Republicans winning appears to
- 0:08Speaker 1: be to make life harder and more expensive for you
- 0:12Speaker 1: and them, make it harder for them, too. I mean, take,
- 0:15Speaker 1: for example, Trump's decision to restart his trade war with Canada.
- 0:18Speaker 1: We were just talking about this with Jim Messina and
- 0:21Speaker 1: Tim Miller, one of, again, our most important trading partners
- 0:24Speaker 1: and one of the most important trading partners to a
- 0:26Speaker 1: lot of states. Over the weekend, after walking away from
- 0:29Speaker 1: trade negotiations, the Trump administration announced a new 50 percent
- 0:33Speaker 1: tariff on Canadian goods. And today, a very pissed off
- 0:37Speaker 1: Canada responded by announcing retaliatory tariffs as high as 50
- 0:41Speaker 1: percent on hundreds of American products, a lot of which
- 0:45Speaker 1: come from states like Maine, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio and Wisconsin.
- 0:50Speaker 1: You know, the states where voters will go to the
- 0:52Speaker 1: polls in a matter of weeks. Excellent work, Mr. President.
- 0:56Speaker 1: You really, you got him this time. Or how about
- 0:59Speaker 1: Trump's plan to bring down the price of beef from
- 1:01Speaker 1: its near record high? Apparently, Trump's big strategy for that
- 1:05Speaker 1: is to encourage imports of ground beef, 300,000 metric tons
- 1:09Speaker 1: of it, by exempting it from his own tariffs for
- 1:12Speaker 1: 90 days, like some sort of an arsonist promising to
- 1:16Speaker 1: stop pouring gasoline on a fire, but only for a
- 1:18Speaker 1: limited time.
- 1:19Speaker 2: Limited time.
- 1:20Speaker 1: There's also the added fact, and this is very important,
- 1:22Speaker 1: that no one in his administration is willing to say
- 1:26Speaker 1: where this new mystery beef is coming from, just that
- 1:29Speaker 1: it will be cheaper. They promise. Just trust them, of course,
- 1:31Speaker 1: because they're to be trusted. Nor have they factored in
- 1:34Speaker 1: the medium and long term impact on farmers and ranchers
- 1:37Speaker 1: in states that include Iowa, Montana, Nebraska and Texas. And yes,
- 1:41Speaker 1: North Carolina, too. One angry farmer in North Carolina told
- 1:45Speaker 1: Queen City News that he thinks this beef exemption is
- 1:49Speaker 1: pure politics and that Trump is, quote, trying to buy
- 1:51Speaker 1: votes for the midterms. Doing this is not going to
- 1:54Speaker 1: help any rancher or cattle farmer at all. in this country.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Joining me now is the former governor of North Carolina,
- 1:59Speaker 1: Roy Cooper, who is now the Democratic nominee for U.S.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Senate in that state. It's great to see you, Governor.
- 2:06Speaker 1: I just want to start with this renewed trade war
- 2:09Speaker 1: with Canada and how it's going to impact North Carolina.
- 2:12Speaker 1: And I wanted to play for you something that Ontario
- 2:15Speaker 1: Premier Doug Ford said yesterday. You and he have very
- 2:19Speaker 1: different styles, I'm just going to say. But he makes
- 2:22Speaker 1: some interesting points in here. So we'll talk about it
- 2:25Speaker 1: on the other side.
- 2:28Speaker 3: When it comes to the midterms, I have a message
- 2:30Speaker 3: to the Americans. Don't vote in a person that's going
- 2:33Speaker 3: to kill your jobs. He ran on creating more jobs.
- 2:37Speaker 3: Last time I checked, jobs went down in the U.S.
- 2:40Speaker 3: and Ontario created more jobs. He ran on reducing the
- 2:44Speaker 3: cost of living. Last time I checked, Foods are more
- 2:47Speaker 3: expensive down there. Homes are more expensive. And the reason
- 2:50Speaker 3: homes are more expensive because he has a tariff on
- 2:53Speaker 3: our lumber, which 33 percent of all homes that are
- 2:57Speaker 3: built in the U.S. use Canadian lumber.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Again, maybe different styles here, but make some interesting points.
- 3:04Speaker 1: What's your the retaliatory tariffs were announced today. What's your
- 3:07Speaker 1: response to Trump restarting this tariff war with our neighbor
- 3:10Speaker 1: to the north and the and the impact it could
- 3:12Speaker 1: have in a state like North Carolina?
- 3:15Speaker 2: Why are we fighting with Canada? Canada is North Carolina's
- 3:21Speaker 2: number one foreign export country company. It's country. And what
- 3:26Speaker 2: we're seeing is small businesses and farmers getting killed. Pender
- 3:32Speaker 2: and Wilson County already hurt by the cost of fertilizer
- 3:37Speaker 2: and equipment and having a difficult time making a profit.
- 3:42Speaker 2: I was with Ann today, runs Scottish Gourmet USA. The
- 3:47Speaker 2: tariffs are cutting into her profits, which she has very
- 3:50Speaker 2: little now, and the rest of them are being passed
- 3:53Speaker 2: on to consumers. We're hearing it from people. Stuff just
- 3:57Speaker 2: costs too much. My opponent, though, Michael Watley, is going
- 4:03Speaker 2: to do and say whatever this president tells him to
- 4:06Speaker 2: do and say, regardless of whether it's good for the
- 4:09Speaker 2: people of North Carolina or the people of this country.
- 4:13Speaker 2: And he says that prices are going down. He says
- 4:18Speaker 2: that we've defeated inflation. He says that the tariffs are
- 4:23Speaker 2: an important economic tool. We know that that's not true,
- 4:28Speaker 2: and I think the people of North Carolina are going
- 4:30Speaker 2: to see that they're not benefiting from this and, in fact,
- 4:34Speaker 2: are hurting. But what he's going for here is the
- 4:38Speaker 2: money to fuel his campaign. He knows North Carolina is
- 4:43Speaker 2: close and can go either way. The Supreme Court, a
- 4:47Speaker 2: month or so ago, gave them a new tool that
- 4:51Speaker 2: is the worst decision since Citizens United that allows these
- 4:55Speaker 2: joint committees. They're going to funnel this money through and
- 4:59Speaker 2: have unlimited spending. And now they're scheming to get a
- 5:03Speaker 2: discount rate on television advertising for all of it. And so...
- 5:09Speaker 2: His plan is to just overwhelm us. That's why we
- 5:13Speaker 2: need grassroots donations, why we need help here in North
- 5:19Speaker 2: Carolina to make sure we win this race and take
- 5:22Speaker 2: back the Senate majority. People can go to RoyCooper.com, see
- 5:26Speaker 2: our plan to lower prices and to help us out.
- 5:32Speaker 1: I know that in North Carolina, early vote ballots go
- 5:35Speaker 1: out pretty soon in the next two weeks, I believe.
- 5:38Speaker 1: It's the earliest state in the country where those go out.
- 5:42Speaker 1: A lot of people saw this news about the Supreme
- 5:44Speaker 1: Court decision yesterday, and it made them really nervous about
- 5:48Speaker 1: their ability to participate in the process. What are you
- 5:50Speaker 1: telling people about that in North Carolina? What should people
- 5:53Speaker 1: out there understand about their ability to early vote?
- 5:57Speaker 2: People should know that elections are going to be safe
- 6:00Speaker 2: and secure, and they should be ready to vote. But
- 6:03Speaker 2: we know that this potential Supreme Court decision, if they
- 6:07Speaker 2: come back and decided on the merits to allow any
- 6:11Speaker 2: part of this executive order to go forward, it could
- 6:14Speaker 2: potentially throw the election into chaos, particularly when it comes
- 6:19Speaker 2: to absentee ballots in North Carolina. We're already seeing our
- 6:23Speaker 2: Republican-controlled board of elections take steps to make it harder
- 6:28Speaker 2: for people to vote. They have curbed Sunday voting. They
- 6:33Speaker 2: have taken ballot boxes from college campuses, and clearly they're
- 6:39Speaker 2: targeting people that they don't believe are going to vote
- 6:41Speaker 2: for them. So if they get any inkling that this
- 6:46Speaker 2: Supreme Court is going to allow any part of this
- 6:48Speaker 2: executive order on these absentee ballots, then we could potentially
- 6:53Speaker 2: have a problem. But we need people to come out
- 6:56Speaker 2: and vote, and we're going to fight them every step
- 6:59Speaker 2: of the way. And I think you're seeing a lot
- 7:01Speaker 2: of people in North Carolina, particularly on college campuses, are
- 7:06Speaker 2: having a I'll show you attitude. You're not going to
- 7:10Speaker 2: take our vote away. We'll show you. I went to
- 7:13Speaker 2: North Carolina A & T State University, the largest HBCU
- 7:18Speaker 2: in North Carolina. They removed that ballot box from their campus.
- 7:22Speaker 2: But the students are marching to the nearest polling place.
- 7:26Speaker 2: And they're spreading the word that it's really important for
- 7:29Speaker 2: them to get out and vote in this election because
- 7:33Speaker 2: our country needs a course correction. And that's what they
- 7:37Speaker 2: can do in these midterms by putting the checks and
- 7:40Speaker 2: balances back into the Constitution that the framers intended.
- 7:45Speaker 1: Former Governor Roy Cooper, thank you so much for joining me.
- 7:48Speaker 1: I appreciate it.
- 7:50Speaker 2: Thanks, Janet.
