- 0:05Speaker 1: Welcome on edg Off Edge the Podcast with me your
- 0:08Speaker 1: host Cam Jordan. I'm sitting here with the man who
- 0:11Speaker 1: needs no introduction, somebody who's been a pro bowler and
- 0:14Speaker 1: all Pro somebody who spent their entire fourteen year career
- 0:16Speaker 1: with the Colts of the NFL's all time leader in
- 0:19Speaker 1: forest fumbles. I mean, he's a man who punches the ball, out,
- 0:22Speaker 1: who finds the ball. It's a knack sometimes. I'm telling you,
- 0:25Speaker 1: I still watch film like, how did he do this
- 0:28Speaker 1: for such a long time at such a high level.
- 0:30Speaker 2: We talked about a member of the Coach Ring of
- 0:32Speaker 2: Honor and.
- 0:32Speaker 1: A black college, Black College Football Hall of Fame representing Alabama,
- 0:37Speaker 1: A and M, which I thought he was more country
- 0:40Speaker 1: than he is because apparently he's from like, you know,
- 0:43Speaker 1: that Atlanta side, which I'm not gonna hold it against him,
- 0:46Speaker 1: But we talked about none other than Robert Mathis aka
- 0:49Speaker 1: the Misico getter one hundred and twenty three sacks. Oh man,
- 0:53Speaker 1: it's time for this week's Drive for Success conversation with
- 0:56Speaker 1: anybody Toyota. Let's go places. We talk about just formidable
- 1:02Speaker 1: defensive ends. Somebody who I used to watch film one
- 1:05Speaker 1: be like bro, you got a non stop motor.
- 1:06Speaker 2: It was you and Dwight Freedy.
- 1:08Speaker 1: But what they don't understand is how hard it is
- 1:10Speaker 1: to get that ball out. And you you are the
- 1:13Speaker 1: NFL all time like I said, fifty three or fifty
- 1:16Speaker 1: four over the punch us like sad, Yeah, I'm getting that.
- 1:20Speaker 3: Oh yeah it was tell me how first the first
- 1:22Speaker 3: off zone six east? That to be exact. Let's let's
- 1:26Speaker 3: let's get that correction. But no appreciate you having me, man,
- 1:30Speaker 3: And it's just a pleasure just to speak a sack
- 1:35Speaker 3: pass rushers, speaking of speaking amongst sack pass rushings. So uh,
- 1:40Speaker 3: just those are things that we practice every single day
- 1:44Speaker 3: because if you know, as a sack man, you you
- 1:47Speaker 3: have to sharpen your tools every day. If you don't
- 1:51Speaker 3: do it, the tools will get dull and uh and
- 1:54Speaker 3: you just have to do it every day. So these
- 1:56Speaker 3: are things that my past rush uh D line coach
- 1:59Speaker 3: uh John Cheer, he demanded that we do something past
- 2:03Speaker 3: rush related every single day and and it carried over.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Yeah, look, I how skills they we had.
- 2:12Speaker 1: We had a saying it as for minority line skills,
- 2:14Speaker 1: if you don't use them, you lose it. So you
- 2:16Speaker 1: gotta be able to work those skills every day. Hey,
- 2:18Speaker 1: and I bring my hands to work every day.
- 2:19Speaker 2: I'm trying to choke it, tight end out.
- 2:24Speaker 1: But you, I'll say you he was finding that for
- 2:26Speaker 1: that ball, man, that's different. I mean I feel like
- 2:29Speaker 1: I've I've had emphasis on like, oh, let's push the
- 2:32Speaker 1: ball out, let's get the handle the ball like you know,
- 2:35Speaker 1: whatever it is. I've had quarterback in hand hand on
- 2:38Speaker 1: the ball ripping out, and for some reason they want.
- 2:41Speaker 2: To double clutch with me.
- 2:42Speaker 1: I see guys like you, I see, I see you
- 2:44Speaker 1: know Vaughn hit them with like a little like three
- 2:46Speaker 1: figure tap and the ball be out.
- 2:47Speaker 2: Some guys just have a knack for finding the ball.
- 2:50Speaker 3: You know.
- 2:50Speaker 1: My team at Chris Rope had one like he He
- 2:53Speaker 1: slid underneath the tackle, popped up, slapped the ball and the.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Ball was out immediately.
- 2:57Speaker 1: I'm like, bro, I punched the ball and somehow it's
- 2:59Speaker 1: like hit a quarterbacks ripcage and he's double clutched it.
- 3:02Speaker 1: I'm like, godly, So for you, like, it's one thing
- 3:06Speaker 1: to have a vision and focus on it.
- 3:07Speaker 2: Man, for you to get a fit over fifty of
- 3:09Speaker 2: the things knocked out, that's that's legendary.
- 3:12Speaker 3: Well, the background background story, I grew up watching Derreck
- 3:16Speaker 3: Thomas and he actually did started a tomahawk chop. So
- 3:21Speaker 3: what I do whenever I'm able to get to the quarterback,
- 3:24Speaker 3: which is not easy, by the way, for the people
- 3:27Speaker 3: out there, you do the same thing. You secure the
- 3:29Speaker 3: tackle and you tomahawk with the opposite hand, and it
- 3:34Speaker 3: just so happened. The football will come out if you
- 3:37Speaker 3: if you're getting pushed put pushed past the quarterback, just
- 3:41Speaker 3: chicken wing it. Throw your hand out there, knock the
- 3:43Speaker 3: ball out. And as long as you work those things
- 3:46Speaker 3: every things, every day, it'll work out to your favor.
- 3:49Speaker 3: But you have to do it every single day. It
- 3:52Speaker 3: gets boring, but hey, you have to do it.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Hey, things don't get boring when you're obsessive about your craft.
- 4:01Speaker 1: There's nothing boring about repetitive motions. That means when you
- 4:04Speaker 1: get tired and it's fourth quarter and the games on
- 4:07Speaker 1: the line, and you've played sixty snaps, you play sixty
- 4:10Speaker 1: five snaps and you've been fighting double teams chips this
- 4:14Speaker 1: fat person called the office of Lineman.
- 4:16Speaker 2: You you know, like this is what you rely on.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Those those repetitive motions come skills, and that's a skill
- 4:22Speaker 1: set right there, so somebody we may never see again.
- 4:25Speaker 2: I mean fifty over fifty forced bubbles.
- 4:28Speaker 3: Well, well, I teach my guys to be a technician
- 4:32Speaker 3: about your technique, and that's doing a little things right
- 4:35Speaker 3: over and over and over. That's why you can say
- 4:39Speaker 3: it gets boring. But to us as rush guys, is
- 4:43Speaker 3: never boring because you get to the quarterback, get them down,
- 4:47Speaker 3: do your sack dance, and in this mandatory have a
- 4:50Speaker 3: sack dance mandatory man mandatory, you know, and and just
- 4:55Speaker 3: keep it going on to the next one.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Absolutely, And I mean the fact that I've got you here,
- 5:01Speaker 1: a man who's at over one hundred sacks, we say,
- 5:04Speaker 1: one hundred and twenty three. I now know what it
- 5:06Speaker 1: feels like. You know, I'm finally a match shoot. I
- 5:10Speaker 1: feel great about it. I'm like, man one hundred twenty
- 5:11Speaker 1: three sacks. I don't think I've ever had my water's dreamed,
- 5:14Speaker 1: not like be here. In my mind when I first
- 5:17Speaker 1: got to leak, I wanted like forty or fifty sacks.
- 5:19Speaker 1: We had the privilege to be in a couple Pro
- 5:20Speaker 1: bowls together, and I was like, I was watching you
- 5:22Speaker 1: and I was watching Robert Quinn, you know, going off
- 5:25Speaker 1: for the high teens in the sacks, and I was like, man,
- 5:28Speaker 1: I was like, I gotta get there. I got ten,
- 5:29Speaker 1: I got twelve, and then I finally got like that
- 5:31Speaker 1: the fifteen and a half. I was like, man, it's
- 5:32Speaker 1: a threshold up here. You know, what what does it
- 5:36Speaker 1: mean for you like to be on that one hundred
- 5:39Speaker 1: plus sack list.
- 5:43Speaker 3: You don't sneeze at it, man, because you because you
- 5:46Speaker 3: understand how tough it is to get to get they
- 5:48Speaker 3: get to the quarterback, they're gonna they're gonna scheme against you.
- 5:51Speaker 3: Once you become a guy that's on the radar, they're
- 5:54Speaker 3: gonna make sure you don't get to their their franchise.
- 5:58Speaker 3: Why because the past rusher, the franchise past rusher, is
- 6:02Speaker 3: the only guy that can neutralize three other franchise players
- 6:06Speaker 3: on one plate at any particular time. If you can
- 6:10Speaker 3: beat the offensive WindMan, sack the quarterback, and prevent the
- 6:16Speaker 3: quarterback and throwing it to his past catcher, you neutralize
- 6:19Speaker 3: three guys on one plate. And if you're a guy
- 6:22Speaker 3: that they respect enough to assign two or three guys
- 6:25Speaker 3: onto you, that's that lets you know how tough it
- 6:29Speaker 3: is to get to a quarterback. And we're not going
- 6:32Speaker 3: to speak about the the Michael straight hand Brett Favs
- 6:37Speaker 3: type of respect.
- 6:46Speaker 2: Respect no matter how they comes, as long as they
- 6:48Speaker 2: as they come through good way.
- 6:51Speaker 3: They say, a sack is a sack is a sack.
- 6:53Speaker 3: So hey, absolutely, man, absolutely, I hope I get a couple.
- 6:58Speaker 3: All he fell down. I take that, you know, touch
- 7:01Speaker 3: turn out of bounds. Hey, whatever the case and whatever,
- 7:04Speaker 3: no doubt whatever, Man, I take it.
- 7:06Speaker 2: But yeah, he at the end of the season, they
- 7:09Speaker 2: don't They don't ask how you got there. They said,
- 7:10Speaker 2: did you get there?
- 7:11Speaker 3: Did you get the answers? Yes, that's it, that's it,
- 7:13Speaker 3: my brother. Hey, hey, I pray you get fifteen to
- 7:16Speaker 3: twenty more of those.
- 7:17Speaker 1: Man, I appreciate, I say now that we're tired. Man,
- 7:21Speaker 1: look now, now I gotta start hutting your teammates and whatnot.
- 7:23Speaker 1: Go get like all right now, go hey, Like is
- 7:28Speaker 1: it crazy to think like as you were after you
- 7:30Speaker 1: hit that one hundred sack threshold and you started like
- 7:33Speaker 1: counting down the guys you're walking down with every sack
- 7:36Speaker 1: and you end up in the pandy of the twenty
- 7:38Speaker 1: five greatest pass rushers of all times on that list,
- 7:41Speaker 1: Like what is it? Were starting to look at those sacks,
- 7:44Speaker 1: would you start like, hey, I need three more to
- 7:45Speaker 1: pass this guy up, or hey another one.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Here is going to help me.
- 7:49Speaker 3: I didn't start.
- 7:50Speaker 2: Was what was your perspective on this?
- 7:51Speaker 3: I didn't really It wasn't really real until you got
- 7:57Speaker 3: past like the one hundred and tenth show, because I
- 8:01Speaker 3: just want to get I wanted to get to one hundred,
- 8:03Speaker 3: like you said you wanted to get to fifty. Once
- 8:05Speaker 3: you passed fifties, okay, I'm going to start tracking. I'm
- 8:08Speaker 3: going to start tracking walking boys down. And uh that
- 8:11Speaker 3: was the case. And especially with the Coats, it was
- 8:15Speaker 3: you know, Dwhite Freendie was He's the guy, you know,
- 8:18Speaker 3: he's the mount rushmore past rushes. So once I got
- 8:22Speaker 3: to striking range, all right, so well let's I can
- 8:29Speaker 3: absolutely okay, yeah yeah, So once I got to that
- 8:33Speaker 3: that first shoulder, oh man. So and this is a
- 8:36Speaker 3: guy that me and him were we came up in
- 8:38Speaker 3: this game together, so they lets you know, damn we
- 8:41Speaker 3: can we can really make some noise in this thing. Man.
- 8:44Speaker 3: So that's how it was. You got to the one hundred,
- 8:47Speaker 3: one hundred tens. So now you want to start. Yeah,
- 8:50Speaker 3: I'm looking at Derek Thomas, he had one twenty six.
- 8:53Speaker 3: I couldn't get there, but hey, you ever chance he
- 8:58Speaker 3: got a tence bro we got Hey, we got a chance.
- 9:01Speaker 1: Look we got we got fifteen games left in the
- 9:03Speaker 1: regular season. I'm like, man, I say, okay, we gotta
- 9:06Speaker 1: really start coming on year.
- 9:08Speaker 3: You got another year or two, don't do it.
- 9:11Speaker 1: I mean, look, I'm assumed saying what's in front of you?
- 9:14Speaker 1: You know, we have fifteen opportunities left in this season.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Who knows this this next offseason, I'm like, I got
- 9:19Speaker 1: three more in me and be like Klais Campbell heading
- 9:21Speaker 1: in the year eighteen. Or it could be like, hey,
- 9:24Speaker 1: my wife said, I gotta go. Here we go, we
- 9:27Speaker 1: go pack this up ahead on to the next inventure.
- 9:29Speaker 1: But that's just it with with every week it comes
- 9:32Speaker 1: that much more important, Like this this past week didn't
- 9:35Speaker 1: get one and somehow lost this game. You're like, man,
- 9:37Speaker 1: I was like, every one of these plays gets that
- 9:40Speaker 1: much more important.
- 9:40Speaker 2: Team, what it got? What it got towards the end?
- 9:43Speaker 2: What did what did you feel like? How did you
- 9:45Speaker 2: know after fourteen seasons seasons you you had had enough.
- 9:49Speaker 3: Well obviously your mind tells you you can. You can
- 9:52Speaker 3: play however loan you desire, which is twenty twenty five years.
- 9:57Speaker 3: But your body starts talking to you every every every week.
- 10:00Speaker 3: It was something going wrong in my body, so you're fourteen.
- 10:05Speaker 3: I mean it started out it was a toe, it
- 10:07Speaker 3: was my knee, then the other knee, then heilp a stinger,
- 10:13Speaker 3: three stingers in a row. So your body, my body
- 10:16Speaker 3: started talking to me. So I had to listen to it.
- 10:20Speaker 2: But your body will let you know.
- 10:21Speaker 3: It's gonna let you do.
- 10:23Speaker 2: There was like like right around like year seven, year eight.
- 10:25Speaker 1: I remember I used to like wake up like bro,
- 10:27Speaker 1: I am not kicking back, like used to be good
- 10:29Speaker 1: by Tuesday.
- 10:30Speaker 2: Now it's Thursday, it's Friday.
- 10:32Speaker 1: I said, I don't know if I can do this
- 10:35Speaker 1: forever now, but some of you know, you start taking
- 10:37Speaker 1: care of your body the way that we need to
- 10:39Speaker 1: go through acupuncture, cupping, dry needles, the electric stem the
- 10:43Speaker 1: like the body feels good like some some weeks, like
- 10:47Speaker 1: like this week it's Tuesday. Usually I feel like I'm
- 10:50Speaker 1: hit by a train by Tuesday that delayed on the lay,
- 10:53Speaker 1: I said, muscle sword.
- 10:54Speaker 3: This is real. Doms.
- 10:55Speaker 1: I feel like you've a bed in a whole fight
- 10:57Speaker 1: with Terrace Crawford out there like Canelo getting a body shots,
- 11:00Speaker 1: going to work, and here we are.
- 11:02Speaker 2: I'm like exactly, I'm like, I'm like this Tuesday, I'm like, hey,
- 11:07Speaker 2: we're gonna run a mile.
- 11:09Speaker 3: We go w some sprints.
- 11:10Speaker 1: I said, eight, we're back, eating right, getting your body,
- 11:14Speaker 1: body right, getting always prepared like that does a huge
- 11:18Speaker 1: thing for you. You a contrast, if you believe in it.
- 11:21Speaker 1: I believe in hot tub. I'm a big Are you
- 11:23Speaker 1: a cold guy?
- 11:25Speaker 3: I became a cold, tough guy, like midway midway through
- 11:28Speaker 3: my career.
- 11:30Speaker 2: Okay, these things that I don't do. I do not
- 11:32Speaker 2: partake in the cold. But she was out in Indianapolis
- 11:34Speaker 2: where it snow. I'm here for heat and the heat along.
- 11:37Speaker 3: The thing about that once you got to that threshold,
- 11:41Speaker 3: you know what your body needs. I watched I watched
- 11:45Speaker 3: Riggie Wayne. He kind of taught me how to take
- 11:48Speaker 3: care of my body. He was a cold tub guy,
- 11:52Speaker 3: and I was like, man, left that I'm not getting
- 11:55Speaker 3: in the cold tub. But I saw that it helped.
- 11:57Speaker 3: It sped up recovery and reduce inflammation. So you know
- 12:02Speaker 3: what you need. And at this point, like you said,
- 12:04Speaker 3: you what to see your fifteen for you sixteen Yeah yeah, man,
- 12:08Speaker 3: you know you know exactly what you need. So I'm
- 12:12Speaker 3: not gonna do I'm not gonna go out and play basketball,
- 12:15Speaker 3: pick up basketball, I'm not going to do none of
- 12:17Speaker 3: that stuff. Everything is football related and just just keep it,
- 12:22Speaker 3: keep it in focus. Man.
- 12:25Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:26Speaker 1: He reps is low, Like reps is low with the family.
- 12:29Speaker 1: So like I got four kids, they're like, Dad, come
- 12:31Speaker 1: play basketball.
- 12:32Speaker 2: Come this week one. Oh yeah, I'm in there.
- 12:35Speaker 3: We two.
- 12:35Speaker 2: Hey, we gotta tamp it down now. Week three, Hey, man,
- 12:38Speaker 2: I can, I can.
- 12:39Speaker 1: I I'm quarterback if you need if you want to
- 12:41Speaker 1: go run routes cool, Oh you need, you need an outlet,
- 12:43Speaker 1: I can pass to you. We're not We're not playing
- 12:46Speaker 1: for games now. Hey, we gotta we gotta tamper down.
- 12:48Speaker 1: I gotta save my best for this next fifteen weeks.
- 12:51Speaker 3: Look at him, listen, you go run, you go do
- 12:53Speaker 3: all that I got you.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Absolutely, I'm gonna be right there. Run me my slant son,
- 12:58Speaker 1: yeah yeah, run me that post go.
- 12:59Speaker 2: Yeah. No, I'm not covering you. No, I'm not. Nope, no,
- 13:03Speaker 2: that's over.
- 13:04Speaker 1: But when I think about, how are you able to
- 13:06Speaker 1: you know, become the strip sack king, you know, with
- 13:09Speaker 1: the all time NFL leader with forty seven.
- 13:11Speaker 2: Career strip sacks? Crazy, what's so another one like five
- 13:14Speaker 2: or six just forced punch out? It's crazy? You know?
- 13:19Speaker 1: How is it that you sort of go h underacknowledged
- 13:22Speaker 1: for this feet Like I feel like in terms of
- 13:25Speaker 1: first ballot Hall of Famers, once you hit that one
- 13:27Speaker 1: fifteen and above one twenty for sure, like i'd say
- 13:32Speaker 1: first ballot, and here we are saying like, hey, like
- 13:34Speaker 1: you're still waiting on your time. How is it that
- 13:36Speaker 1: you're sort of you know, not being talked about as
- 13:39Speaker 1: a dominant pass rusher and the pantheon that of pass rushers.
- 13:42Speaker 3: Well, I think the bulk of my career I was
- 13:46Speaker 3: playing with Dwight D. White is that he was that
- 13:49Speaker 3: guy for the Aapolis Colts. But hey, I earned my
- 13:53Speaker 3: seat at the table as well. But you know how
- 13:55Speaker 3: that goes. You have to you have to get the
- 13:57Speaker 3: votes that you're how the control of getting. So it
- 14:00Speaker 3: is what it is man right here.
- 14:03Speaker 2: So you say, like you know whatever that is, but
- 14:05Speaker 2: you were under undersize for sure.
- 14:07Speaker 1: Like I remember you know, like it was it was you.
- 14:09Speaker 1: But you're sitting there at what two you played at
- 14:11Speaker 1: two forty five?
- 14:16Speaker 2: Two thirty five? But what the what the frontier.
- 14:20Speaker 3: Five speak to thirty five? So we're going to put
- 14:23Speaker 3: in the media, uh the media book it was it
- 14:27Speaker 3: was six two two forty five nose air six feet
- 14:32Speaker 3: thirty five.
- 14:34Speaker 1: My gosh, Like, that's that's the astronomical like advantage that
- 14:38Speaker 1: you have just in terms of leverage.
- 14:40Speaker 2: Sure, but the fact that you were doing as a
- 14:42Speaker 2: two thirty.
- 14:42Speaker 1: Five sub two fifty, I don't know if like I've
- 14:47Speaker 1: dropped under two seventy once in my career.
- 14:49Speaker 2: At a preseason last year, I was like, oh, I'm
- 14:51Speaker 2: too light. I said, no, too light. I was like,
- 14:53Speaker 2: I don't like I don't like it. I don't like
- 14:54Speaker 2: how I'm black in power.
- 14:55Speaker 1: And I got back up to thirty five and I
- 14:57Speaker 1: was like, two thirty five is the lightest I've ever
- 14:59Speaker 1: played this last two years.
- 15:01Speaker 2: I'm getting to thirty five.
- 15:02Speaker 1: And I'm like, I'm quick, I'm fast, I'm had, y'all,
- 15:04Speaker 1: I'm mobile, I'm hostile.
- 15:06Speaker 2: Thirty five.
- 15:07Speaker 3: I saw I wouldn't have a year ago. I looked
- 15:10Speaker 3: down at the scale and I saw two sixty and
- 15:12Speaker 3: I was discussing at myself my belly. A hey, man,
- 15:18Speaker 3: I don't know what too, certainly I can't even fathom that.
- 15:21Speaker 3: But yeah, it's just body type. Man. You you your
- 15:24Speaker 3: power guy, So that's what you do, right.
- 15:28Speaker 2: You gotta know what you're good at it. I don't know, brother,
- 15:31Speaker 2: Like we've seen that long arm happen now it was.
- 15:34Speaker 2: It was a transition. We've seen a long arm. Take tar.
- 15:38Speaker 2: You fast guys talking about you know the power, that's
- 15:40Speaker 2: your lane. We got you Von Miller, your elite steps.
- 15:44Speaker 1: Equal equal shifted feet and shifted feet equals not not
- 15:47Speaker 1: set your gravity for an office a linement, and.
- 15:49Speaker 2: We know where that hand place we could go.
- 15:51Speaker 3: I promise you it was weight transition. We got three
- 15:54Speaker 3: hundred pounds going one way. You just keep it going
- 15:56Speaker 3: that weight. So I'm not gonna try to do a
- 15:59Speaker 3: chop swim slap that you do. Man, I'm not. That's
- 16:02Speaker 3: not me.
- 16:05Speaker 2: I'm I'm gonna chop to mars down because I really
- 16:07Speaker 2: want to get their feet moving too.
- 16:09Speaker 1: I feel like I'm missed it pushed by himself, Like
- 16:12Speaker 1: I get you the spot and I can push you
- 16:14Speaker 1: by I need that. I'm trying to race. I'm trying
- 16:17Speaker 1: to race to my spot. Sometimes I'm like, that's where
- 16:19Speaker 1: I want to go. We gotta push. Thank you, stupid,
- 16:23Speaker 1: you wonderful man, you for this beautiful pleasant But man,
- 16:26Speaker 1: what I would I have to think about what you
- 16:28Speaker 1: what you've been able to do. I mean in your era,
- 16:31Speaker 1: like low key undersized you, Elvis Duomerville. You know, we
- 16:36Speaker 1: look at the pantheon the guys like that. It made
- 16:39Speaker 1: you unique, especially you coming from an HBCU, Like how
- 16:43Speaker 1: how does how do young Robert get to Alabama?
- 16:48Speaker 3: Hey, the choice was very easy for me because I
- 16:51Speaker 3: only had one. They offered me a scholarship and it
- 16:55Speaker 3: just so happened to be the last scholarship of that
- 16:57Speaker 3: particular year because the guy that they actually it turned
- 17:01Speaker 3: them down on National Signing Day, and so they offered
- 17:04Speaker 3: me the opportunity and only had one, so I took it.
- 17:09Speaker 2: Stay less.
- 17:11Speaker 3: I got a shout out to the heel Alabama and
- 17:13Speaker 3: the Princeville. It's Vegas, Alabama.
- 17:19Speaker 1: Veaszy, no doubt, I mean, you know so then so
- 17:25Speaker 1: then you go ahead and we go to uh, you
- 17:27Speaker 1: go to Indiapolis Colts.
- 17:28Speaker 2: You know that first year. You know, did you have
- 17:31Speaker 2: like a welcome to NFL type moment?
- 17:33Speaker 3: Oh? Man, yes, yes, short answer, yes, a long answer.
- 17:38Speaker 2: So if you played the two thirty five, what did
- 17:40Speaker 2: you come into the league.
- 17:40Speaker 3: At two twenty? Hey, it was it was so funny
- 17:47Speaker 3: the story. Man, it's so funny because I come in
- 17:51Speaker 3: obviously I had to do the core for the special
- 17:54Speaker 3: teams kick off, kickoff return, punt return. And my first
- 18:00Speaker 3: in the game was a preseason I got handled, I
- 18:03Speaker 3: got ran over and the guy made a tackle. But
- 18:06Speaker 3: during the season it's so fun I think we were
- 18:09Speaker 3: playing a Jets and we was gonna kick off return,
- 18:14Speaker 3: so we got into a mix up skirmish or whatever,
- 18:16Speaker 3: and a cornerback came in and he was talking. He's like, man,
- 18:22Speaker 3: get your old two hundred and twenty five pounds defense
- 18:25Speaker 3: in face. Ass. Hey, this stopped me from whoever I
- 18:31Speaker 3: was engaged with, and I just started laughing. Man, it's like, bro,
- 18:35Speaker 3: so we're doing this in the middle of a rock hey. Facts.
- 18:41Speaker 1: Hey, you know when you're in the churches, boys, boys like,
- 18:44Speaker 1: may you feel a little light today?
- 18:47Speaker 3: Have you had?
- 18:47Speaker 2: Have you had some tacos?
- 18:48Speaker 1: Maybe you should gonna get another steak and you were here,
- 18:50Speaker 1: like man, out of everything I could, this is me.
- 18:53Speaker 3: I had plenty of light days in my career, Sir.
- 18:58Speaker 2: Man, I say, we got We got the defensive end
- 19:00Speaker 2: on the Saints.
- 19:01Speaker 1: Chris Ruff my dog weighed into like two thirty something
- 19:04Speaker 1: one day and I said two thirty eight. I said,
- 19:07Speaker 1: big fella, go play safety. Big fella, like you ain't
- 19:10Speaker 1: they You know he's liked bro.
- 19:12Speaker 2: He's like, what I eat all I can?
- 19:13Speaker 3: That's two for it. Tell him come see me. I
- 19:15Speaker 3: got it. No, no, he give us all nolt, slipper,
- 19:19Speaker 3: shameless plub. Let's go. I got it.
- 19:23Speaker 2: Hey, the fan facts.
- 19:24Speaker 1: I mean, but so you you were over there again,
- 19:26Speaker 1: over there a coat, You get your welcome moment.
- 19:29Speaker 2: You you boke up.
- 19:30Speaker 1: You say you played at two thirty five. So we
- 19:33Speaker 1: gave pails there two forty on a heavy year.
- 19:36Speaker 3: I actually got this. I got the fifty one in
- 19:39Speaker 3: the middle of the season and I was like, oh no,
- 19:41Speaker 3: I felt my stomach bouncing, So I can't do this.
- 19:44Speaker 3: I can't do this.
- 19:47Speaker 2: That's crazy. Hey, you gotta know who you are. You are,
- 19:49Speaker 2: you know you you solid? You shredded every every muscle,
- 19:53Speaker 2: muscle speak for themselves. You know you figure your way.
- 19:55Speaker 1: But you you say you entered you know any coats
- 19:58Speaker 1: you had, you had the O G with you. What
- 20:00Speaker 1: did you take from you know, Dwight Freeney, What did
- 20:02Speaker 1: you take from Rege?
- 20:03Speaker 3: What do you what like?
- 20:04Speaker 2: What? What did you take from Tony Dungee? It's outed
- 20:06Speaker 2: to my guy, Tony Dungee.
- 20:07Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying. From coach Dongee. I took
- 20:10Speaker 3: no excuses, no explanations from Peyton. I took how to
- 20:14Speaker 3: be a student of the game from Reggie Reggie Wayne.
- 20:18Speaker 3: I took how to uh just keep you know, prepare
- 20:23Speaker 3: my body and just how to preserve how to preserve
- 20:26Speaker 3: my body from Dwight. I took how to approach the game.
- 20:33Speaker 3: Uh he was he was a one year ahead of me.
- 20:35Speaker 3: But Dwight is his hot his football. I Q we
- 20:40Speaker 3: past rush i Q. I would say, nobody is ahead
- 20:44Speaker 3: of him. He knows how to dissect blocking schemes, uh
- 20:51Speaker 3: chip blocks. Uh the I you know, reading how the
- 20:55Speaker 3: quarterback is going to I mean, how to offensive linement
- 20:58Speaker 3: with their eyes, looking at their eyes, their knees, their
- 21:01Speaker 3: the amount of rhythms, things like that. Oh, Jeff Saturday
- 21:06Speaker 3: how to be a leader. Man. I came in the
- 21:09Speaker 3: era I man. I joined the team that was full
- 21:11Speaker 3: of guys. Bro uh this guys. So I try to
- 21:15Speaker 3: take a little bit from everybody that I see that's
- 21:19Speaker 3: successful in their particular department. And they were just somebody.
- 21:23Speaker 3: It was just a good run, man. Uh. I hate
- 21:27Speaker 3: that the Saints kind of derailed one one run, one
- 21:29Speaker 3: of those runs. But it's fine, it's fine. I'm over
- 21:32Speaker 3: it here.
- 21:34Speaker 2: You got you got one.
- 21:35Speaker 1: It's not like it's not like you're fifteen years in
- 21:37Speaker 1: and he ain't got a super Bowl, you know, fourteen
- 21:40Speaker 1: one early.
- 21:41Speaker 2: I'm still hunting, Like I'm like, are you in the quarterdecks? Yeah,
- 21:44Speaker 2: but also wins. What I didn't want to hunt a win,
- 21:46Speaker 2: and I would have.
- 21:47Speaker 1: I've been to an NC championship game and we felt
- 21:49Speaker 1: like got robbed, but you never and we never got back.
- 21:52Speaker 1: So I don't even I've been to the highest part
- 21:55Speaker 1: of mountain. I ain't been to the highest so you
- 21:56Speaker 1: got part of the mountain.
- 21:57Speaker 3: Indeed, you got robbed. But we're not gonna do that.
- 22:02Speaker 2: That's gonna bring that's gonna bring them them dark days
- 22:03Speaker 2: out of me.
- 22:04Speaker 1: Just like you know, we were talking about But what
- 22:07Speaker 1: so you know you said, Dwight's a year ahead of you.
- 22:09Speaker 2: I didn't realize. I thought it was about three years
- 22:11Speaker 2: ahead of Eyway.
- 22:12Speaker 1: You know, like when you guys play together, it was
- 22:14Speaker 1: it was poetry in motion. But when did y'all know
- 22:17Speaker 1: y'all could be a dominant duo? You know you're saying,
- 22:19Speaker 1: you say you started taking off of doubles Dwight Dwight,
- 22:22Speaker 1: of course double digits.
- 22:23Speaker 2: So y'all had.
- 22:24Speaker 3: Bookeets Hey, Dwight was rolling early. I walked in the door,
- 22:27Speaker 3: Dwight was already rolling. And so my rookie year, I
- 22:31Speaker 3: had three and a half sacks. But and that's because,
- 22:34Speaker 3: and this is what I tell my guys that I trained.
- 22:37Speaker 3: That's because I relied on what I did in college,
- 22:41Speaker 3: like the talent that I had. But this is the NFL.
- 22:44Speaker 3: They're going to adjust by the next series. So to
- 22:47Speaker 3: where year two I had ten and a half. And
- 22:50Speaker 3: that was because I trusted the process. If it works
- 22:55Speaker 3: in practice against a guy Ryan Dean, he was the
- 22:57Speaker 3: offensive tackle that I work me and win against each
- 23:00Speaker 3: other for almost two or ten years. If it works
- 23:03Speaker 3: against him in practice, it's going to work against a
- 23:05Speaker 3: guy that doesn't know you in a game. So I
- 23:07Speaker 3: had to trust the move, get a plan, work a plan,
- 23:11Speaker 3: perform a plan. So that was the thing. So now
- 23:14Speaker 3: by year three, I had eleven and a half and
- 23:16Speaker 3: Dwight was like sixteen, and we was like, it was up,
- 23:19Speaker 3: it was it was up, it was up. And so
- 23:22Speaker 3: we're like, hey man, but we had that. We we
- 23:25Speaker 3: stole sacks from each other. That was the that was
- 23:29Speaker 3: the unique part of our relationship that we was the
- 23:33Speaker 3: we was each other's best cheerleader. Like he get to
- 23:35Speaker 3: the quarterback, like, yes, sir, so now all the tension
- 23:39Speaker 3: goes over there. Yeah, I love it.
- 23:45Speaker 1: Like those years, Like those years you get like, oh,
- 23:48Speaker 1: oh snaps, he got a two piece game, he got
- 23:50Speaker 1: oh he was crazy, he had three piece.
- 23:52Speaker 2: Oh yeah, it's still third quarter.
- 23:53Speaker 1: Brobody taking this party.
- 23:58Speaker 2: And it takes a place.
- 23:59Speaker 3: It takes a pass rushing to understand a pass rushing.
- 24:02Speaker 3: So if and there was no jealousy, it's just like Dwight,
- 24:07Speaker 3: get going. You're an alpha gat please go, go, go go.
- 24:12Speaker 3: So now the sentler is gonna slide that way, the
- 24:15Speaker 3: running back is gonna be over there, So I gotta,
- 24:17Speaker 3: I gotta, I.
- 24:22Speaker 2: Mean, I dream of those one on ones and now
- 24:24Speaker 2: now because.
- 24:25Speaker 1: He going crazy, I'm about to go absolutely.
- 24:31Speaker 2: Love that.
- 24:32Speaker 1: Love that man I've had. I've had a couple of
- 24:34Speaker 1: pass rushers over the years. When they go double digits,
- 24:37Speaker 1: I'm not too far behind me or I'm just just
- 24:39Speaker 1: slightly ahead, because either way, I try to tell guys,
- 24:42Speaker 1: it goes full circle.
- 24:43Speaker 2: Those ones you missed you like, dang, that could have
- 24:45Speaker 2: been mine, but he got it.
- 24:46Speaker 1: Eventually he he's gonna fall off one and you will
- 24:48Speaker 1: be like, hey, brother.
- 24:50Speaker 3: Let me get that.
- 24:52Speaker 2: Yeah, way bad, thank you.
- 24:53Speaker 3: Man.
- 24:53Speaker 1: Hey, look that's what it's like. It's ours. It's gonna
- 24:56Speaker 1: stay at Bagarage.
- 24:57Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying. He's gonna stay right at
- 25:00Speaker 2: my crills.
- 25:01Speaker 1: But oh man, yeah, I mean you talk about you
- 25:04Speaker 1: at one twenty three, Dwight Freedi at one twenty five
- 25:06Speaker 1: and a half and.
- 25:08Speaker 2: The same era. That's just disgusting work. When you know
- 25:11Speaker 2: you got Hall of famers on the team. You look
- 25:14Speaker 2: over you, you like you like little Spider Man, me.
- 25:16Speaker 1: Like you're a Hallo faper y'all had, y'all had them guns.
- 25:20Speaker 1: Maybe let's just talk about the culture in general, Like
- 25:25Speaker 1: after a loss, What did that locker room feel like
- 25:27Speaker 1: versus after a win?
- 25:29Speaker 3: You know, man, it was devastating because a loss is
- 25:35Speaker 3: not expected. It was not expected, and you have coach
- 25:39Speaker 3: Dungee who doesn't yell, and that's worse than having somebody
- 25:43Speaker 3: that yells at you. It was like, we didn't get
- 25:44Speaker 3: it done. And at one time he said he said
- 25:49Speaker 3: the word, and it.
- 25:51Speaker 2: Was like, oh, oh he met that soft.
- 25:55Speaker 3: He's just like, oh, you're a man. So that really
- 25:58Speaker 3: ever really stung. Uh. Obviously, with wins, we expect it
- 26:03Speaker 3: because we put the work in and everybody's professional. But
- 26:06Speaker 3: with the losses, man, they really hit hard because you
- 26:10Speaker 3: just don't go into a game thinking we can lose it,
- 26:13Speaker 3: and so when you lose a game, you just have
- 26:16Speaker 3: to recover, bounce back and just you know, right the
- 26:19Speaker 3: wrongs and just move forward. But that was just the
- 26:24Speaker 3: locker room with those guys, man, the high caliber, elite,
- 26:28Speaker 3: just an elite team. Man. It was just it was
- 26:31Speaker 3: just great. Man. It's great for you for production, it's
- 26:36Speaker 3: great for the city of Indianapolis, and it was just
- 26:38Speaker 3: great for development as a pleasant young player.
- 26:42Speaker 1: Absolutely, man, I appreciate you. Man showed me the peak
- 26:47Speaker 1: I eventually I want to get there. But thank you
- 26:49Speaker 1: so much for tapping in everything that you are.
- 26:53Speaker 3: Bro.
- 26:53Speaker 1: You're a legend of the game. You should be a
- 26:55Speaker 1: first ballot. But it's fine, it's all right. You can
- 26:57Speaker 1: you get your time. You're definitely gonna get in there.
- 26:59Speaker 1: We appreciate you. You know what I'm saying.
- 27:01Speaker 2: Thank you for everything.
- 27:03Speaker 1: Uh, you know we're gonna we're gonna let you slide
- 27:04Speaker 1: out of here for everything. Man, Hey, Rob, you're an amazing person.
- 27:08Speaker 1: You know the Pro Bowls, the Accolades, the forest fumbles,
- 27:11Speaker 1: the Super Bowl, that you winner, that you champion, that
