Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to the news Hour. Today, the president's top military
- 0:03Speaker 1: advisors were.
- 0:04Speaker 2: On Capital Hill to make the case for the war
- 0:06Speaker 2: in Iran and additional money to fund the Pentagon.
- 0:09Speaker 3: Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and Joint Chiefs Chairman General
- 0:13Speaker 3: Dan Kain argued for an additional sixty seven billion dollars
- 0:17Speaker 3: what Hegseth called an urgent and necessary injection of Fundsnik
- 0:21Speaker 3: Shipfre's been tracking this all and he joins us now,
- 0:24Speaker 3: So Nick, what did Hegseth and Kain say about why
- 0:26Speaker 3: those funds are needed? And powded Centers respond.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Heg Seth and Kane requested the additional money to restock
- 0:32Speaker 1: weapons that have been used against Iran and to avoid
- 0:35Speaker 1: budget shortfalls, and there are apparently military shortfalls right now.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Subcommittee Chairwoman Susan Collins of Maine said that there were
- 0:43Speaker 1: quote near term solvency challenges in some of the military services.
- 0:48Speaker 1: So the Pentagon says this money is especially needed, especially
- 0:51Speaker 1: after the war Iran, which Hegseth said cost thirty seven
- 0:55Speaker 1: point five billion dollars up until today. That's up from
- 0:58Speaker 1: twenty nine billion last estimate, but frankly, thirty seven point
- 1:01Speaker 1: five is probably an under account itself. Democrats question their request.
- 1:06Speaker 1: They said that many of the weapons requested today had
- 1:09Speaker 1: already been requested by the Pentagon, and that the money
- 1:13Speaker 1: was earmarked frankly for administration priorities that had nothing to
- 1:16Speaker 1: do with Iran as Americans prices were rising. So take
- 1:20Speaker 1: a listen to New York Democrat Kristen Jilibrand.
- 1:24Speaker 4: You are asking for unlimited money for bombs when people
- 1:28Speaker 4: can't feed their families. And I don't know how this
- 1:31Speaker 4: administration intends to defend those decisions to the American people.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Not unlimited bombs, Senator, I'm asking for the right bombs
- 1:38Speaker 2: at the right time to ensure we can deter our
- 1:40Speaker 2: adversaries into the future. And that's why this is a
- 1:42Speaker 2: generational investment. And if the previous administration hid this department set.
- 1:48Speaker 4: Why they are so upset with you and this administration
- 1:52Speaker 4: is because the words you have used in the past
- 1:54Speaker 4: don't add up.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Republicans argued Amna that the war in Iran is necessary,
- 1:59Speaker 1: and that if the US were to pull back right now,
- 2:02Speaker 1: Iran would charge tolls in the straight upfore moves and
- 2:05Speaker 1: likely reconstitute its nuclear programs. So take a listen to
- 2:08Speaker 1: South Dakota Republican Microwns.
- 2:11Speaker 5: I think the decision to take out Iran's nuclear program
- 2:15Speaker 5: and their missile production capacity was the right one and
- 2:20Speaker 5: it should have been done a long time ago. But
- 2:24Speaker 5: when the President did that, we also assumed that there
- 2:29Speaker 5: would be risk involved.
- 2:31Speaker 1: And on that point, today the Pentagon identified that Sergeant
- 2:34Speaker 1: Michael Swinton, thirty years old from Fayetteville, North Carolina, was
- 2:38Speaker 1: killed over the weekend in Iraq, in addition to two
- 2:41Speaker 1: other Americans killed in Jordan, first Lieutenant twenty five year
- 2:45Speaker 1: old Tyler Fihan and Private nineteen year old Isabella Gondales Nick.
- 2:50Speaker 3: Because we've been reporting those service members were killed as
- 2:52Speaker 3: that war with the Run as essentially restarted. Now where
- 2:55Speaker 3: is it now? Is it just continuing to escalate?
- 2:57Speaker 1: It's definitely expanding the war. The UN has finished its
- 3:00Speaker 1: tenth straight night of strikes, not only on military targets
- 3:04Speaker 1: but also on infrastructure targets, including bridges across southwest Iran
- 3:09Speaker 1: and Iran intact. In the last twenty four hours, three
- 3:12Speaker 1: tankers transiting the Straight of Horror moves, but also civilian
- 3:15Speaker 1: targets inside of the Gulf. Allies along the Persian Gulf,
- 3:19Speaker 1: including Kuwait. A desalinization plant was struck. You see it
- 3:23Speaker 1: there multiple times in a row. Kuwait needs that plant
- 3:26Speaker 1: in order to have water for its population. Now that said,
- 3:30Speaker 1: both sides are saying diplomacy is still open. We saw
- 3:33Speaker 1: Iranian officials in Pakistan one of the mediators, of course,
- 3:36Speaker 1: but today President Trump took a dim view toward diplomacy.
- 3:42Speaker 6: I will tell you they want to desperately meet, and
- 3:46Speaker 6: until they're ready to meet in a meaningful way, we
- 3:49Speaker 6: have no interest in even.
- 3:51Speaker 1: No interest in stopping, no interest in diplomacy what he
- 3:55Speaker 1: finished there. Another threat is the Iranian Bak Huthis in Yemen,
- 3:59Speaker 1: and this is another example of the war expanding. They
- 4:01Speaker 1: are now threatening to close the Babel Mandeb. You see that,
- 4:05Speaker 1: twelve hundred miles to the southwest of the Strait of Hormuz.
- 4:08Speaker 1: The Baba Mondes is the gateway to the Red Sea. Today,
- 4:12Speaker 1: President Trump referenced a previous US military campaign against the
- 4:16Speaker 1: Huthis and said it could be repeated.
- 4:20Speaker 6: That was about forty five days of very powerful action
- 4:24Speaker 6: we took against the Utes. And we've had no problem
- 4:28Speaker 6: with the Jutes. They've had no problem with us. For
- 4:31Speaker 6: a long period of time, including during this conflict. I
- 4:35Speaker 6: think that if there is something like that, we'll just
- 4:37Speaker 6: have to take care of business now.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Today, the Huthis did claim that they warned six ships
- 4:43Speaker 1: heading toward the Babel Mandeb and that those ships rerouted themselves.
- 4:46Speaker 1: It's not clear that's true, but even the threat omna
- 4:49Speaker 1: of the Huthis closing the Babel Mandeb will force ships
- 4:53Speaker 1: not to try and go there. And if the Strait
- 4:56Speaker 1: of Horrmus and the Baba Mandeb are both closed, it
- 4:59Speaker 1: is clear that prices around the world will increase if
- 5:02Speaker 1: that happens, especially gas prices here.
- 5:04Speaker 3: All right, next sure from the beginning our coverage tonight, Nick,
- 5:07Speaker 3: thank you
