Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Felicity Foy: Far North District Councillor on changes to insulation standards
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: I thought that changes to insulation rules announced yesterday could
- 0:03Speaker 1: save up to fifteen thousand dollars per new build. Minister
- 0:07Speaker 1: for Building Chris Pinks scrapping the one size fits all
- 0:10Speaker 1: approach to homebuilding to give developers and homeowners more flexibility,
- 0:13Speaker 1: and looking at making the Far North a separate climate zone.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Felicity Fox is final district councilor with me this morning.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Hey Felicity, Oh hi, Felicity foroy here, oh.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Fory forgive me. Nice to have you on the program. Felicity,
- 0:27Speaker 1: tell me tell me what you guys are wanting this
- 0:30Speaker 1: climate zone for. What would that mean?
- 0:34Speaker 2: Okay, yes, we're in the finals here, so we're very subtropical.
- 0:38Speaker 2: I don't think we've be to the final for Ryan,
- 0:41Speaker 2: but we're twenty beaches in twenty minutes and that will
- 0:44Speaker 2: mean for us that we can bring down the very
- 0:47Speaker 2: extensive cost to build.
- 0:48Speaker 1: What's in the final What is the cost in the
- 0:51Speaker 1: Far North because nationally, you know, they sort of say
- 0:53Speaker 1: anywhere between three and a half four thousand.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Green meeting one thousand dollars per square meter. For us,
- 1:01Speaker 2: it's the transport. So we're four and a half hours
- 1:07Speaker 2: north of Auckland and you might also have realized that
- 1:11Speaker 2: we've had our State highway as well among a mocker
- 1:14Speaker 2: clothes for a number of years. So we've had a
- 1:16Speaker 2: lot of barriers that we've faced with our distance from
- 1:20Speaker 2: metropolitan centers, but also the huge cost to get it here,
- 1:24Speaker 2: and that just means we have to pick up that
- 1:26Speaker 2: cost when we're building as well.
- 1:28Speaker 1: How much. I mean, is there a problem right now
- 1:30Speaker 1: where people are shoving insulation and the homes that just
- 1:32Speaker 1: don't need it.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Oh? Yes, definitely. The current existing standard that has been
- 1:39Speaker 2: bored in and the Minister has announced that he's changing
- 1:42Speaker 2: to be more sensible and reasonable is totally over the top.
- 1:47Speaker 2: When you look particularly at the glazing cost. The difference
- 1:51Speaker 2: between double glazing and low eglass is significant. As the
- 1:57Speaker 2: Minister has announced, fifteen thousand dollars is not uncommon.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Just for the glazing.
- 2:04Speaker 2: So you think and that's the glazing alone, and I
- 2:06Speaker 2: know firsthand examples of that also from yesterday speaking to
- 2:13Speaker 2: home loan advisors finance advisors. The number of people that
- 2:18Speaker 2: are actually building has dropped significantly and we've seen that
- 2:22Speaker 2: in our council with our building consents.
- 2:25Speaker 1: And no doubt that's partly because the cost, presumably, So
- 2:28Speaker 1: did you.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Believe significantly because of the cost. Definitely.
- 2:32Speaker 1: And so when they made the change initially the previous
- 2:34Speaker 1: government to the insulation rules, did you guys say, hey,
- 2:37Speaker 1: we don't need this because it's warmer up here.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Definitely? Yes, Oh yeah, Well you might have seen in
- 2:49Speaker 2: immediate the time there were significant advocates for that, and
- 2:53Speaker 2: that was the insulation industry and the glazing industry because
- 2:57Speaker 2: obviously it impacts them in a positive way. But for
- 3:01Speaker 2: the every day mum and dad just trying to get
- 3:03Speaker 2: into her house, that's a significant barrier. Particularly up here
- 3:07Speaker 2: where we're subtropical. We're much warmer. We call it the
- 3:11Speaker 2: tropics of Moody Fenowa and north here of Mangamoca. I
- 3:15Speaker 2: live here at nine a mile beach. We are so
- 3:17Speaker 2: warm and the cost of the lowy glass is not needed.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Well listenally appreciate your time this morning for Licity Foy,
- 3:25Speaker 1: who is the final district councilor for more from early
- 3:29Speaker 1: edition with Ryan Bridge. Listen live to news Talks it'd
