- 0:08Speaker 1: Hump Day, Hump Day, Hump Day, Hump Day. Kind of
- 0:11Speaker 1: missed that commercial with the camel running around with a
- 0:14Speaker 1: Hump Day, Hump Day, Hump Day.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Hump Day?
- 0:17Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Hopefully we help you get over the hump here on
- 0:21Speaker 1: a Wednesday. Good afternoon. Welcome to Sports Radio AM 13
- 0:25Speaker 1: Under the Zone to The Craig Way Show. My name
- 0:27Speaker 1: is Craig Way. I do thank you very much. for
- 0:30Speaker 1: joining us. And I always say it on Wednesday, if
- 0:33Speaker 1: Wednesday is truly your hump day and you're trying to
- 0:35Speaker 1: get over that hump along with us, hey, you know,
- 0:39Speaker 1: hopefully we can get you there on that. For those
- 0:42Speaker 1: of you for whom Wednesday is just starting the work week,
- 0:46Speaker 1: and the producer, Jake Herman, says he knows a few
- 0:47Speaker 1: of those people, right? You know some people start the
- 0:50Speaker 1: work week on Fridays.
- 0:51Speaker 2: I know a couple people, a couple people that are
- 0:52Speaker 2: in the service industry or slash retail, and then a
- 0:56Speaker 2: couple in the news producer friend of mine.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Okay. All right. That start on Friday?
- 1:01Speaker 2: That start on Wednesday.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Start on Wednesday. Okay. Well, if it's the start of
- 1:04Speaker 1: your work week, hey, hopefully we can make it a
- 1:06Speaker 1: little easier for you. And for those of you who
- 1:08Speaker 1: are at the end of your work week, hey, good
- 1:10Speaker 1: on you. Good for you. Hopefully you're getting ready to
- 1:12Speaker 1: enjoy the next couple of days after that. We're with
- 1:14Speaker 1: you each and every weekday afternoon from 2 p.m. to
- 1:16Speaker 1: 5 p.m. And we have things up on the program.
- 1:21Speaker 1: A lot of college football obviously discussed with everything going
- 1:24Speaker 1: on with this SEC and Big Ten now versus anybody
- 1:30Speaker 1: wanting to return from the NFL. We'll have details on
- 1:34Speaker 1: that in a few moments. Also, we're going to hear
- 1:35Speaker 1: from Longhorn players. In specific, we're going to hear quite
- 1:39Speaker 1: a bit from Arch Manning. We're going to hear from
- 1:40Speaker 1: the Texas quarterback who met with the media yesterday and
- 1:43Speaker 1: he's pretty glib and pretty relaxed. And this is what
- 1:45Speaker 1: we've kind of said about Arch Manning. all along that
- 1:49Speaker 1: he's kind of been just, you know, laid back and,
- 1:53Speaker 1: and comfortable and, and, uh, seemingly what's the old word,
- 1:56Speaker 1: the old phrase about being comfortable in your own skin,
- 1:59Speaker 1: that kind of thing. Uh, so he has been feeling
- 2:02Speaker 1: better about things. So, um, and ready to go with
- 2:07Speaker 1: a brand new football season. So, uh, we'll hear from
- 2:10Speaker 1: March Manning. Uh, we do have inconceivable this hour. So that's,
- 2:14Speaker 1: that's coming up as well. And, uh, We do have
- 2:17Speaker 1: a fast food, junk food update in that. And we've
- 2:19Speaker 1: got some other bizarre things that happen that can only
- 2:22Speaker 1: be involved with Inconceivable. As I mentioned, the producer is
- 2:27Speaker 1: Jay Kerman. Where are you on your television watching? Have
- 2:31Speaker 1: you watched the latest episode of Ted Lasso, the one
- 2:34Speaker 1: that came out late last week?
- 2:35Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm caught up.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Okay.
- 2:37Speaker 2: I caught up over the back half of last week
- 2:40Speaker 2: to the new season. I'm going to give it a shot, Craig.
- 2:43Speaker 4: Okay.
- 2:43Speaker 5: The show.
- 2:45Speaker 2: I owe a shot to it. Has it found the spark,
- 2:49Speaker 2: the lightning in the bottle that was captured by the
- 2:51Speaker 2: first few seasons yet?
- 2:53Speaker 1: I'm not sure. No, I agree with you. I agree
- 2:57Speaker 1: with you. And I've kind of come to the conclusion
- 3:01Speaker 1: that the characterization to me kind of really is more
- 3:08Speaker 1: important than the storyline. Because the storyline... is a little
- 3:12Speaker 1: slow to get going. But if you think about it,
- 3:14Speaker 1: all the way back to season one, it was kind
- 3:16Speaker 1: of like that. It was a little slow, and then
- 3:19Speaker 1: everything accelerated after that. So maybe it will. We'll find
- 3:23Speaker 1: out as we go forward. But, you know, at least
- 3:27Speaker 1: it's out there. I think the next episode is either
- 3:29Speaker 1: tonight or tomorrow. Yeah, it should be tonight. Yeah, yeah.
- 3:33Speaker 1: So that'll be going on as well. Okay, I want
- 3:36Speaker 1: to jump right into this college football thing here. And
- 3:38Speaker 1: then after a break, then we'll hear From Arch Manning,
- 3:42Speaker 1: we'll also hear from D'Amico Ryans, the Houston Texans head coach.
- 3:46Speaker 1: We've been hearing both from Ryans and from Cowboys head coach,
- 3:52Speaker 1: Brian Schottenheimer. Tomorrow, by the way, on the program, Isaiah Stanback,
- 3:58Speaker 1: who works on the Cowboys preseason games, works for NFL Network,
- 4:01Speaker 1: and has worked with me on state high school football
- 4:04Speaker 1: championship games, will join us. He does a lot of
- 4:06Speaker 1: Cowboys studio-related content. and television shows. So Isaiah Stanback will
- 4:12Speaker 1: join us on the program tomorrow. But I want to
- 4:15Speaker 1: jump right to college football. And we were talking about
- 4:19Speaker 1: this yesterday. The Big Ten had their statement put out
- 4:24Speaker 1: yesterday where they were not in favor of allowing anyone
- 4:30Speaker 1: who had been on an NFL roster or had tried
- 4:34Speaker 1: out or had a contract with the NFL to return
- 4:38Speaker 1: with eligibility to the SEC. I mean, to the Big Ten.
- 4:41Speaker 1: The SEC, in a much more peculiar and maybe delicate predicament,
- 4:47Speaker 1: because the poster child, as he's being described, case for
- 4:52Speaker 1: this is Daquan Wright, who had been the tight end
- 4:56Speaker 1: at Ole Miss, tried to catch on with the Cleveland Browns,
- 5:00Speaker 1: was under contract, but never appeared in a game for Cleveland.
- 5:06Speaker 1: dressed out, was in uniform, and was under contract for that,
- 5:10Speaker 1: and did not make the team, released, and so trying
- 5:14Speaker 1: then to transfer to LSU. The SEC on Monday night
- 5:19Speaker 1: had a gathering of its school presidents, and they weren't
- 5:25Speaker 1: real happy with the idea. And then last night, they
- 5:28Speaker 1: went farther in their opposition to athletes leaving the NFL
- 5:33Speaker 1: and returning to college They swiftly, the SEC did, passed
- 5:39Speaker 1: a new rule that gives Commissioner Greg Sankey full authority
- 5:44Speaker 1: to be able to basically say, you're not eligible. You
- 5:48Speaker 1: can't do it. You're not eligible with what they did.
- 5:51Speaker 1: So they were very, very adamant about this and have said, really,
- 6:04Speaker 1: that there's nobody that should be eligible coming back from
- 6:10Speaker 1: an NFL camp. And it was, it was something, like
- 6:16Speaker 1: I said, it started off really as a conversation with
- 6:21Speaker 1: the university presidents and they had a video conference on that.
- 6:28Speaker 1: And then following that they went, they went further on
- 6:33Speaker 1: that with the ruling that they had yesterday to talk
- 6:37Speaker 1: about this. And as a result of it, they, they
- 6:41Speaker 1: made their statement very, very clear on, you know, what they,
- 6:48Speaker 1: what they will allow and what they will not allow. Now,
- 6:52Speaker 1: Lane Kiffin had talked about, he thought it was really, uh,
- 6:56Speaker 1: a double standard that was going on in college football.
- 7:01Speaker 1: But the SEC made no bones about it that they
- 7:04Speaker 1: were definitely not going to allow this. And I would imagine,
- 7:08Speaker 1: and we've talked about this, that this is going to
- 7:10Speaker 1: be something, Jake, that I think it's probably pretty safe
- 7:15Speaker 1: to say is probably going to wind up in the courtrooms.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what Pete Famel, who I was watching one
- 7:22Speaker 2: of his kind of SportsCenter hits about it. He says
- 7:27Speaker 2: that what's going on behind the scenes, it actually echoes
- 7:29Speaker 2: what Lane Kiffin said yesterday when he was visiting with
- 7:31Speaker 2: Pat McAfee. We heard the soundbite on the show. LSU
- 7:35Speaker 2: is just the one that had the first recruiting battle
- 7:38Speaker 2: won over these guys. It's like we saw in college basketball.
- 7:42Speaker 2: All of these coaches at the end of the day
- 7:44Speaker 2: work for their own schools. If there's an advantage, it's
- 7:47Speaker 2: their job to exploit it. Joey McGuire last night said
- 7:50Speaker 2: the same thing, that he would be pursuing those types
- 7:52Speaker 2: of players for Texas Tech. And why not? He sees
- 7:55Speaker 2: Cole Hudson rejoin the Longhorns. So it's going to be
- 7:58Speaker 2: one of those things that, much like we saw in
- 8:01Speaker 2: college basketball, teams will make the NCAA, or make the
- 8:05Speaker 2: courts in this case, call the foul, as Greg Tepper
- 8:08Speaker 2: described on the show here yesterday.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Yeah, now let me tell you, and I think you're
- 8:12Speaker 1: in agreement with this, there is a vast difference between
- 8:15Speaker 1: Daquan Wright's situation and Cole Hudson.
- 8:17Speaker 5: Yep.
- 8:18Speaker 1: Cole Hudson never signed a contract. He was never in
- 8:21Speaker 1: a training camp, like you said, went to the mini
- 8:22Speaker 1: camp in the spring, was released long before then. And
- 8:26Speaker 1: I think that's the key crux here is not being
- 8:30Speaker 1: under contract. I think that's one of the things that's
- 8:33Speaker 1: going to be the deal. So with a step-by-step explanation,
- 8:39Speaker 1: the SEC announced, Its institutions are, quote, not permitted to
- 8:44Speaker 1: have an athlete on its roster who has, one, previously
- 8:48Speaker 1: declared for the NFL, NBA, or WNBA draft and did
- 8:51Speaker 1: not appropriately withdraw. Two, signed a contract with an NFL
- 8:57Speaker 1: or other professional football league, NBA, G League, or WNBA team. Three,
- 9:02Speaker 1: been listed on an NFL or other professional football league, NBA,
- 9:07Speaker 1: G League, or WNBA, or affiliate roster. And the announcement
- 9:11Speaker 1: stated that Greg Sankey, quote, is authorized to enforce this
- 9:16Speaker 1: expectation with penalties against member institutions. An SEC spokesperson later
- 9:22Speaker 1: told ESPN, this coming from Heather Dinnage's piece, that the
- 9:25Speaker 1: penalties are, quote, to be announced as to what those
- 9:29Speaker 1: would be.
- 9:29Speaker 2: Did you read Seth Emerson's piece on this in The Athletic, Craig?
- 9:32Speaker 1: Not yet. I saw it, but I hadn't read it yet.
- 9:34Speaker 2: How's this? The plaintiffs in the Louisiana case comparing the
- 9:39Speaker 2: SEC's actions to cartel-like conduct.
- 9:42Speaker 1: I did see that quote.
- 9:44Speaker 2: When conferences attempt to create their own spur-of-the-moment rules and
- 9:47Speaker 2: responses to courts and joining those same rules at the
- 9:50Speaker 2: NCAA level so this is just beginning and it's not
- 9:54Speaker 2: going to be resolved before week one I don't think.
- 9:56Speaker 1: Yeah and clearly, both sides are dug in enough that
- 9:59Speaker 1: this is going to wind up in the courtroom. We
- 10:01Speaker 1: were talking about it with Greg Tepper yesterday from Dave
- 10:04Speaker 1: Campbell's Texas Football Magazine. This thing is going to climb
- 10:07Speaker 1: the legal mountain. I don't think there's any doubt about it.
- 10:09Speaker 1: I don't know how high up it'll go and how
- 10:12Speaker 1: it would affect going into this year. Like he said,
- 10:15Speaker 1: it's probably not going to be ready. After all, The
- 10:18Speaker 1: NFL starts in 10 days, or excuse me, the NCAA
- 10:21Speaker 1: college football starts in 10 days overall in a big way.
- 10:25Speaker 1: It actually starts in three days for a few schools,
- 10:27Speaker 1: including TCU's playing North Carolina over in Ireland. So we'll
- 10:32Speaker 1: dig a little more into that. But coming up. We'll
- 10:36Speaker 1: hear from Orange Manning, the Longhorns quarterback. We'll do that.
- 10:39Speaker 1: As always, we invite your input. If you'd like to
- 10:41Speaker 1: join in the conversation on our talkback line, all you
- 10:45Speaker 1: have to do is download the iHeartRadio app. Real easy
- 10:49Speaker 1: to do. Absolutely free. You search AM13 under the zone.
- 10:53Speaker 1: It'll pop right up. Then you'll see a little red
- 10:55Speaker 1: button with a microphone. You tap that, and you can
- 10:57Speaker 1: leave us a voice message. Up to 30 seconds. Keep
- 10:59Speaker 1: it clean. It is, after all, a family program. But
- 11:02Speaker 1: we'll air that. Or you can text us if you want.
- 11:07Speaker 1: You text the word Texas followed by your question or
- 11:11Speaker 1: comment to 81530. That's texting the word Texas to 81530.
- 11:17Speaker 1: Standard messaging and data rates may apply. We'll hear from
- 11:19Speaker 1: Orange Manning up next when we continue on 1300 The Zone.
- 11:22Speaker 3: These are the eyes that never knew.
- 11:26Speaker 6: How to smile until you came into my life. And
- 11:33Speaker 6: these are the arms that are going to lock you
- 11:38Speaker 6: inside Every day.
- 11:41Speaker 4: And every night.
- 11:44Speaker 3: Girl, and here is the soul of which you've taken
- 11:48Speaker 3: control Can't you see I'm trying to show love is
- 11:53Speaker 3: right Oh, show and tell, just a game I play.
- 12:00Speaker 7: What I want to say, I love you.
- 12:05Speaker 8: Yes, indeed.
- 12:06Speaker 1: It is a Yacht Rock Wednesday here on Sports Radio
- 12:10Speaker 1: AM 13 Under the Zone. with that great offering from
- 12:15Speaker 1: al wilson show and tell.
- 12:17Speaker 2: 1973 on this yeah so.
- 12:20Speaker 1: I mean this is another perfect example of a song
- 12:23Speaker 1: who's born on dating if you will kind of precedes
- 12:28Speaker 1: predates what is supposedly and generally viewed as being the
- 12:35Speaker 1: locked in period of yacht rock late 70s into kind
- 12:39Speaker 1: of early to mid 80s this predates it a little
- 12:42Speaker 1: bit but we've mentioned it on many occasions that yacht
- 12:46Speaker 1: rock is a sound it's a verve it's a thought
- 12:52Speaker 1: and a and a state of mind more than it
- 12:55Speaker 1: is an exact date.
- 12:57Speaker 2: How about this rocky road records in atlanta i hadn't
- 13:00Speaker 2: heard of that it turns out it was short-lived.
- 13:02Speaker 1: Yeah and so was al wilson's time as as being
- 13:05Speaker 1: a a chart topper but that song certainly was show
- 13:09Speaker 1: and tell. There's a lot of folks who are waiting
- 13:12Speaker 1: to see Arch Manning show an awful lot for them.
- 13:15Speaker 1: And yesterday, he met with the media, and one of
- 13:18Speaker 1: the popular conversations that they had to give and take
- 13:23Speaker 1: with Arch was about something that we've heard Longhorn's head coach,
- 13:28Speaker 1: Steve Sarkeesian, point out, and not just Sark, teammates as well,
- 13:32Speaker 1: saying that Arch, when he wants to, can... can get
- 13:37Speaker 1: down in the mosh pit with you a little bit
- 13:39Speaker 1: and trash talk, that he has no hesitation about it.
- 13:44Speaker 1: And so Arch was asked, are you a good trash talker?
- 13:49Speaker 1: And where does all this come from? I don't know.
- 13:51Speaker 5: Probably my dad and brother growing up playing basketball in
- 13:53Speaker 5: the front yard. That's where it started.
- 13:56Speaker 1: Okay. Meanwhile, Justin Cryer, the transfer linebacker in from Florida State,
- 14:02Speaker 1: said that he can, when he wants to be, Arch
- 14:06Speaker 1: can be a pretty annoying trash talker. That message was
- 14:10Speaker 1: delivered to Manning.
- 14:12Speaker 5: Yeah, that makes sense. He's always the one right in
- 14:14Speaker 5: front of me, so he's who I go after a lot.
- 14:17Speaker 1: Okay, all right. Is it easier for Arch to trash
- 14:24Speaker 1: talk like when he's got the black jersey on? And
- 14:27Speaker 1: you've seen it in practice, but quarterbacks have the black
- 14:31Speaker 1: jersey on. That is the no contact. He can't hit
- 14:34Speaker 1: the quarterback. There's also the green jerseys. That's the non-contact ones,
- 14:39Speaker 1: the non-tackling ones when they're coming off injury. But the
- 14:42Speaker 1: black one, hands off. You don't tackle or sack or
- 14:47Speaker 1: hit anybody in the black jersey, and Arch obviously wears one.
- 14:52Speaker 1: So is it a little bit easier to trash talk
- 14:54Speaker 1: when they can't hit you? Yeah, that also helps a lot.
- 14:59Speaker 1: They don't get to hit me during practice, so I
- 15:00Speaker 1: can kind of say whatever I want.
- 15:02Speaker 5: Okay.
- 15:02Speaker 1: All right, so then it went back to, some of
- 15:06Speaker 1: the issues from the scrimmage on Saturday. And you heard
- 15:09Speaker 1: Sark talk about it. There were some things he liked.
- 15:11Speaker 1: There were some players who stepped up and performed well.
- 15:14Speaker 1: And then by the same token, there were some who
- 15:17Speaker 1: did not do well. And parts of series with units,
- 15:21Speaker 1: both on the offensive side and the defensive side, that
- 15:26Speaker 1: did not perform well at all. So as a result
- 15:29Speaker 1: of this, And Arch was asked, the heat, was that
- 15:33Speaker 1: a factor? Did it get to him and the offense
- 15:35Speaker 1: on Saturday?
- 15:36Speaker 5: Yeah, it was hot on Saturday. I don't think the offense,
- 15:39Speaker 5: especially me, didn't have a great day. But I think
- 15:42Speaker 5: we responded well and had a good day today. So
- 15:44Speaker 5: it's part of that. Okay, all right.
- 15:45Speaker 1: So it's better there. Now, that conversation we've heard often
- 15:49Speaker 1: about teams being player-led. How player-led is this team?
- 15:52Speaker 5: Yeah, I think it's been good. The cool thing is
- 15:55Speaker 5: this year we have a lot of leaders. So just...
- 15:59Speaker 5: You don't have to just rely on yourself. We got Hollywood.
- 16:01Speaker 5: We got Conor Robertson, Goosby, Brandon Baker, a bunch of
- 16:04Speaker 5: guys who stepped up in leadership roles, and it's been fun.
- 16:07Speaker 5: All right.
- 16:08Speaker 1: If you go to the University of Texas athletic website, texaslonghorns.com,
- 16:15Speaker 1: and then they have that LHN page, remember, even though
- 16:19Speaker 1: the linear, linear, over-the-air television network, Longhorn Network, went away
- 16:25Speaker 1: once Texas went into the SEC, even though that went away,
- 16:28Speaker 1: the university and the athletic department held on to the
- 16:32Speaker 1: LHN labeling for a lot of their video content. And
- 16:36Speaker 1: on that page, on the content page there, there are
- 16:41Speaker 1: some things that you hear because they'll have certain players
- 16:44Speaker 1: mic'd up at certain times. One of those is hearing
- 16:47Speaker 1: Manning yell out, call out, butter, butter. So what does
- 16:51Speaker 1: butter mean?
- 16:51Speaker 5: Cole Lord, a quarterback, he played here a few years ago,
- 16:54Speaker 5: used to say that. And I kept saying it during
- 16:57Speaker 5: round center, kind of, got ahead of me I said
- 16:59Speaker 5: a lot more than I thought.
- 17:01Speaker 1: Yeah maybe it's an Arch version of Omaha Uncle Peyton
- 17:07Speaker 1: Omaha you know that yeah yeah maybe I don't know
- 17:11Speaker 1: I hadn't thought of that yeah maybe Cam Coleman of
- 17:14Speaker 1: course has produced some highlight plays since transferring him from
- 17:19Speaker 1: Auburn and Arch was asked what Coleman does to help
- 17:23Speaker 1: pick up the entire offense.
- 17:25Speaker 5: Cam just the way he works and him as a person,
- 17:28Speaker 5: has helped the other receiver, and they're all close. The
- 17:31Speaker 5: way he attacks every day has definitely motivated the rest
- 17:35Speaker 5: of the receivers, and it's been a fun time since
- 17:37Speaker 5: he's been here.
- 17:38Speaker 1: Okay, that's one receiver. Emmitt Mosley, and this is something
- 17:40Speaker 1: Sark talked about yesterday. He's very excited. He said two
- 17:45Speaker 1: of the hardest workers on the football team are Grayson
- 17:50Speaker 1: Littleton and Emmitt Mosley, and he talked about The fact
- 17:54Speaker 1: that Littleton coming off that outstanding freshman campaign, really anxious
- 17:58Speaker 1: and eager to see what he brings and what he
- 18:00Speaker 1: has shown so far. Mosley, he said, if you remember
- 18:03Speaker 1: at this time last year, he wasn't even practicing. He couldn't.
- 18:06Speaker 1: He was still coming off the injury and the surgery
- 18:08Speaker 1: and all that kind of stuff after transferring him from Stanford.
- 18:11Speaker 1: So he's been going great guns. And then the really
- 18:14Speaker 1: unique element about all this is that the two have
- 18:16Speaker 1: gone mano a mano. in practice with Littleton matching up
- 18:20Speaker 1: against him. So with Mosley now healthy and bringing that
- 18:25Speaker 1: extra dimension, Arch Manning was asked what it is about
- 18:29Speaker 1: Emmitt Mosley V that really is valuable.
- 18:32Speaker 5: Emmitt's had a really good fall camp. He practices his
- 18:34Speaker 5: ass off. Sorry. But he's a really good player, and
- 18:38Speaker 5: I think he's going to have a great year.
- 18:40Speaker 1: One thing that's said about Arch Manning is that the
- 18:42Speaker 1: guy loves to practice. We've heard Sark say it. We've
- 18:44Speaker 1: heard his teammates say it. So, Arch, why do you
- 18:46Speaker 1: love practice i think it's easier for quarterbacks say they
- 18:50Speaker 1: love practice because you don't have to get hit you
- 18:51Speaker 1: don't have to go through you're not really sore after
- 18:54Speaker 1: practice but it's fun and our practices are intense um
- 18:57Speaker 1: a lot of times you know you walk off the
- 18:59Speaker 1: practice field and you're mentally and physically drained so um
- 19:02Speaker 1: you got to bring it every day but it's uh
- 19:04Speaker 1: it's a lot of fun okay all right uh the
- 19:07Speaker 1: uh training camp the fall camp workouts for texas have
- 19:10Speaker 1: been described in glowing terms not only by the head
- 19:12Speaker 1: coach but by the players and the position coaches as well.
- 19:15Speaker 1: So what has made this a very good training camp?
- 19:19Speaker 1: I think just the team coming together. We're a really
- 19:21Speaker 1: close team.
- 19:22Speaker 5: Obviously, some days are better than others, but I feel
- 19:24Speaker 5: like we've responded and been up to the challenge every day.
- 19:28Speaker 1: Okay, all right, that's one thing. And then there's that
- 19:30Speaker 1: leadership element. We're hearing different guys being described in the
- 19:33Speaker 1: leadership thing. On the defensive side, there's no doubt that
- 19:38Speaker 1: one of those seniors or one of those leaders is
- 19:41Speaker 1: going to be Colin Simmons, the junior edge rusher. And
- 19:43Speaker 1: so Manning was asked how he and Simmons have taken
- 19:47Speaker 1: the team to another level. being leaders I guess now on.
- 19:52Speaker 5: The past what is it three weeks we've been playing
- 19:54Speaker 5: I've been having to go against Colin now we're on
- 19:56Speaker 5: the same team so it's a lot more fun tell
- 19:58Speaker 5: you that.
- 19:59Speaker 1: Yeah okay all right um also asked for his thoughts
- 20:03Speaker 1: Trevor Goosby bouncing back from the from the bone bruise
- 20:06Speaker 1: and then Andre Kojo stepping in along that offensive front
- 20:10Speaker 1: His impressions of both.
- 20:11Speaker 5: Good. Goosey's done a really good job still staying engaged.
- 20:14Speaker 5: He's going to be back, ready to go. And Kojo's
- 20:16Speaker 5: done a really good job filling in. Obviously, he had
- 20:19Speaker 5: an injury last year, and the way he's come back
- 20:20Speaker 5: from that and still not missing a beat has been
- 20:23Speaker 5: really encouraging.
- 20:25Speaker 1: So much has been said about the fact that, you know,
- 20:30Speaker 1: Arch has been in the system now as the starter.
- 20:34Speaker 1: for a full year he's got that full year under
- 20:37Speaker 1: his belt so is it a little bit easier for
- 20:39Speaker 1: arch to be more of himself personality wise and production
- 20:44Speaker 1: performance wise on the field now that he has had
- 20:49Speaker 1: that starting tag on him and the fact that he
- 20:52Speaker 1: has been the starting quarterback and has had it in
- 20:55Speaker 1: the system and has done.
- 20:56Speaker 5: It for a year yeah i think i got to
- 20:58Speaker 5: remind myself to just continue to be myself there's a
- 21:01Speaker 5: lot of noise and trying to be aware of everything
- 21:04Speaker 5: and not let stuff get to my head and just
- 21:06Speaker 5: continue to be me.
- 21:07Speaker 1: Okay, and then one more from Arch this hour. We're
- 21:09Speaker 1: going to hear from him throughout the course of the show,
- 21:11Speaker 1: but he was also asked, how does he remind himself?
- 21:14Speaker 1: You just heard him saying just being himself. And I
- 21:21Speaker 1: think it would be safe to say that there would
- 21:23Speaker 1: be those who would wonder how much he can be
- 21:28Speaker 1: himself given the spotlight that surrounds him seemingly every moment.
- 21:34Speaker 1: So the question for him then was, how does he
- 21:39Speaker 1: remind himself to, and I first heard this phrase uttered
- 21:44Speaker 1: by a major league baseball player decades ago, stay within myself,
- 21:49Speaker 1: that kind of thing. So how does he go about
- 21:51Speaker 1: reminding himself to stay within himself and to continue to
- 21:55Speaker 1: be true to himself, both on the field production-wise and
- 22:00Speaker 1: then personality-wise?
- 22:01Speaker 5: Yeah, I think leaning on my faith is the main thing.
- 22:06Speaker 5: And then having my brother here and having friends outside
- 22:09Speaker 5: of football just keep me to remind me to be
- 22:11Speaker 5: myself and not take everything too seriously.
- 22:14Speaker 1: Okay, we'll hear some more from Arch coming up in
- 22:19Speaker 1: the next couple hours, next hour and then the hour
- 22:24Speaker 1: after that. I did want to bring you a little
- 22:26Speaker 1: bit from D'Amico Ryan's, the Texan's, They get ready for
- 22:31Speaker 1: their final preseason game this week, taking on the Carolina Panthers,
- 22:34Speaker 1: and they had a joint practice with the Panthers. Now,
- 22:37Speaker 1: we all know that joint practices sometimes can, let's just say,
- 22:42Speaker 1: get a little spicy. They can get fisticuffs or things just,
- 22:46Speaker 1: tempers flare and all that. But Ryan's was pretty complimentary
- 22:52Speaker 1: on his thoughts overall on how that joint practice went
- 22:55Speaker 1: with Carolina.
- 22:56Speaker 9: Today was a really, really great day. I thought we
- 22:59Speaker 9: got great competitive work versus the Panthers. They showed up,
- 23:02Speaker 9: very gracious hosts. Thankful for them having us. I like
- 23:05Speaker 9: the way our guys showed up from start to finish today.
- 23:08Speaker 8: We executed really well.
- 23:10Speaker 9: Guys played physical, and it was a productive practice on
- 23:13Speaker 9: both sides. Both teams came in with the right mindset.
- 23:16Speaker 9: Appreciate Dave for how he handled it. Really great operation.
- 23:20Speaker 9: Practice was ran efficiently, and we got a lot of
- 23:22Speaker 9: productive work. So it was exactly what we wanted.
- 23:27Speaker 1: Coaches are always looking for playmakers, and he was asked
- 23:31Speaker 1: about Daniel Hunter and had no hesitation whatsoever talking about
- 23:36Speaker 1: Hunter making plays.
- 23:38Speaker 9: Daniel is a problem. He continues to be a problem.
- 23:41Speaker 9: That's why I love having him and Will. When you
- 23:43Speaker 9: have two guys off the edge, you can be as
- 23:46Speaker 9: disruptive as they are.
- 23:47Speaker 8: It makes it hard on offenses. It makes it hard for.
- 23:50Speaker 9: Them to operate on the timing that they want to
- 23:52Speaker 9: operate on. So, Daniil, I saw a few plays. He's
- 23:55Speaker 9: back there in the backfield a lot, so it was
- 23:57Speaker 9: great to see that.
- 23:57Speaker 1: And then one other guy, remember they traded for Keyshawn
- 24:01Speaker 1: Boutte and his thoughts on that deal and getting Boutte
- 24:06Speaker 1: involved in the system.
- 24:08Speaker 9: Adam Keyshawn was a It's a big get for us.
- 24:10Speaker 9: We know we lost a significant player for us in
- 24:13Speaker 9: Jaden Higgins, and it's hard to replace him. When you
- 24:16Speaker 9: try to go out and find a guy with the
- 24:18Speaker 9: caliber of Kayshaun, we've played against Kayshaun multiple times over
- 24:22Speaker 9: the past couple years. He's contained to make plays time
- 24:25Speaker 9: and time again.
- 24:26Speaker 8: He showed up.
- 24:27Speaker 9: He's a young player, still an ascending player with a
- 24:29Speaker 9: lot to improve upon, a lot to grow.
- 24:31Speaker 8: So I'm excited to work with.
- 24:33Speaker 9: A young player who still has a very bright and
- 24:35Speaker 9: promising future, but he has that big play-making ability already.
- 24:39Speaker 9: So it's been great to have him so far.
- 24:41Speaker 8: We'll get him up and rolling here as the week continues.
- 24:45Speaker 1: We'll hear some more coming up in the 3 o'clock
- 24:48Speaker 1: hour and also the 4 o'clock hour from D'Amico Ryan,
- 24:51Speaker 1: the Texans head coach. Like we said, we've been hearing
- 24:53Speaker 1: from Texans and Cowboys. Both head coaches throughout the course
- 24:57Speaker 1: of the week and will continue to do some of that.
- 24:59Speaker 1: All right. Up next, we shift to inconceivable here on
- 25:04Speaker 1: a Yacht Rock Wednesday afternoon. That will do. Coming up
- 25:06Speaker 1: right here on Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone
- 25:08Speaker 1: and the IR Radio app. Second hour of the program
- 25:16Speaker 1: here on Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone. Craig
- 25:18Speaker 1: Way with you alongside the producer, Jay Kerman. Glad to
- 25:22Speaker 1: have you with us. We'll be up until 5 o'clock
- 25:27Speaker 1: this afternoon. Now, in the first hour of the program,
- 25:32Speaker 1: we brought up the latest that had come down from
- 25:38Speaker 1: the SEC after initially the Big Ten had said that
- 25:44Speaker 1: it would not allow football players to return from the NFL. Now,
- 25:48Speaker 1: that came down yesterday, yesterday during the day. The Big
- 25:53Speaker 1: Ten passed a rule. that would stop players returning from
- 25:58Speaker 1: the NFL from playing for one of its schools. I
- 26:01Speaker 1: really like what one of our texters, and forgive me
- 26:06Speaker 1: who the texter was, might have been CPAL, I'm not sure,
- 26:10Speaker 1: but it was one of the texters who said it
- 26:13Speaker 1: really blurs the lines. Everything I've seen since then from
- 26:17Speaker 1: the Big Ten and the SEC is using that phraseology.
- 26:21Speaker 1: Whoever the texter was, you had it first. We got
- 26:25Speaker 1: it from multiple texters. Yeah, that it was blurring the
- 26:28Speaker 1: lines on this. So the way the Big Ten laid
- 26:33Speaker 1: it out yesterday was that any player who had declared
- 26:37Speaker 1: for the NFL draft and did not withdraw, appeared on
- 26:40Speaker 1: an NFL roster, or signed a contract with a pro league,
- 26:44Speaker 1: cannot be on a Big Ten roster. That was what
- 26:47Speaker 1: the league announced. in a statement yesterday. That came out
- 26:51Speaker 1: yesterday afternoon. There was some initial dismay, disillusionment, and disagreement
- 27:01Speaker 1: from the SEC on this on Monday. Not with the
- 27:04Speaker 1: Big Ten, but with the same thing that the Big
- 27:06Speaker 1: Ten had a problem with about players trying to return
- 27:08Speaker 1: from the NFL. The Big Ten's athletic directors unanimously approved
- 27:14Speaker 1: the rule. It then received unanimous approval later yesterday from
- 27:19Speaker 1: the conference's faculty athletic representatives. And it went further to
- 27:24Speaker 1: say that any teams, now they got a little more
- 27:28Speaker 1: specific than the SEC did about the punishment phase, but
- 27:32Speaker 1: what they said was that any teams in violation of
- 27:37Speaker 1: the rule would be subject to its head coach being
- 27:41Speaker 1: suspended for 50% of its remaining gains plus an undisclosed fine.
- 27:48Speaker 1: I mean, that's making Jim Harbaugh's punishment look mild by comparison.
- 27:55Speaker 1: Cheeseburger gate. The conference, here was the quote that they
- 28:03Speaker 1: came down with. The Big Ten conference announced Tuesday. The
- 28:07Speaker 1: unanimous adoption of a conference rule to prohibit football players
- 28:12Speaker 1: who have signed a professional contract or on a professional
- 28:15Speaker 1: roster at any point or declared for the NFL draft
- 28:18Speaker 1: as an underclassman without withdrawing from maintaining eligibility for athletic
- 28:23Speaker 1: competition at a conference institution. The conference continues to evaluate
- 28:29Speaker 1: potential rules restricting professional athletes in other sports from conference competition.
- 28:35Speaker 1: So this obviously comes in the wake of Daquan Wright.
- 28:39Speaker 1: And then also, by the way, Xavier and Harris, who
- 28:46Speaker 1: were leaving their teams to try to join Lane Kiffin's
- 28:49Speaker 1: roster at LSU. Ryan and Harris both played for Kiffin
- 28:53Speaker 1: at Ole Miss, planning to return to college, thanks to
- 28:57Speaker 1: that court order that seems to be creating some havoc
- 29:01Speaker 1: around college football by allowing athletes to an unexpected fifth
- 29:05Speaker 1: year of eligibility. The players can regain their college eligibility
- 29:09Speaker 1: if they terminate the pro contracts and repay any pro earnings. Now,
- 29:13Speaker 1: Wright cleared NFL waivers yesterday and was expected to sign
- 29:19Speaker 1: with LSU today. The SEC, however, came back. We're going
- 29:23Speaker 1: to get to their statement that came down last night.
- 29:26Speaker 1: The NCAA said in a statement that court rulings that
- 29:29Speaker 1: grant fifth-year eligibility are having a destabilizing effect on college sports. Now,
- 29:35Speaker 1: this is where things start getting very, very.
- 29:41Speaker 1: Rhetorical. There's a lot of rhetoric flying around in the
- 29:47Speaker 1: name of college football, both on the side of the
- 29:50Speaker 1: NCAA member institutions and on the side of those who
- 29:54Speaker 1: are trying to gain another year of eligibility. The quotes
- 29:59Speaker 1: went on to say, courts across the country granting relief
- 30:04Speaker 1: to ineligible athletes who already had every opportunity to compete
- 30:09Speaker 1: in college, sometimes without even having a hearing, are failing
- 30:12Speaker 1: to appreciate the destabilizing effect the rulings are having on
- 30:16Speaker 1: college sports. The lawyers... bringing these cases seemingly won't be
- 30:20Speaker 1: satisfied until every professional athlete can treat college sports as
- 30:24Speaker 1: a fallback option, regardless of the opportunities it strips from
- 30:28Speaker 1: both those who will never have a chance to begin
- 30:30Speaker 1: their collegiate sports experience and those who are currently on
- 30:33Speaker 1: campus working out with the team and attending classes. Thankfully,
- 30:37Speaker 1: Congress can right this wrong by passing the bipartisan Protect
- 30:41Speaker 1: College Sports Act and ensure student athletes can have a
- 30:45Speaker 1: level playing field with rules that apply fairly to everyone.
- 30:49Speaker 1: All right, so that was what they had to say yesterday.
- 30:54Speaker 1: Then last night, the SEC took it a step further.
- 30:59Speaker 1: They went beyond just football. And again, the rhetoric was
- 31:03Speaker 1: rocking and rolling because they started off by saying they
- 31:09Speaker 1: had unanimous opposition to athletes leaving the NFL and returning
- 31:13Speaker 1: to college teams. They really quickly passed this new conference
- 31:17Speaker 1: rule that gives the commissioner, Greg Sankey, full authority to
- 31:19Speaker 1: enforce it with penalties. So the SEC did go farther
- 31:24Speaker 1: than the Big Ten, prohibiting anyone who has previously declared
- 31:29Speaker 1: from professional basketball from rejoining college athletics without appropriately withdrawing.
- 31:35Speaker 1: So the vote was 16-0. Now, think about that. The
- 31:41Speaker 1: vote was 16-0. One of the 16 schools is LSU. Obviously,
- 31:47Speaker 1: we could have guessed that Ole Miss was going to
- 31:49Speaker 1: vote in favor of it.
- 31:50Speaker 2: Wait, we've got, sorry to interrupt, we've got another scoop
- 31:53Speaker 2: on this.
- 31:54Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 31:54Speaker 2: LSU actually abstained from the vote now. This is a
- 31:58Speaker 2: report that came out just a little while ago.
- 32:00Speaker 1: Okay, so it couldn't have been 16-0 as was reported
- 32:03Speaker 1: by ESPN. It had to be 15-0 with one abstention.
- 32:05Speaker 2: Yeah, it looks like the reporting now is that it
- 32:08Speaker 2: was 15-0.
- 32:10Speaker 1: Right, with one abstention. Yeah. Okay, all right. Still, nobody
- 32:16Speaker 1: voted against it. It's just an abstention there. So they
- 32:21Speaker 1: went step by step on this. The SEC announcing its
- 32:25Speaker 1: intentions are, quote, not permitted to have an athlete on
- 32:29Speaker 1: its roster who falls into one of the following categories. One,
- 32:33Speaker 1: previously declared for the NFL, NBA, or WNBA draft and
- 32:36Speaker 1: did not appropriately withdraw. I've had some people ask me,
- 32:39Speaker 1: what does that mean? Appropriately withdraw. You withdraw... from the university.
- 32:45Speaker 1: You withdraw, or excuse me, withdraw from your intent to
- 32:53Speaker 1: whether you were going to be involved with a professional team.
- 32:57Speaker 1: And that gets into the second part. Any athlete who
- 33:01Speaker 1: signed a contract with an NFL or other professional football league, NBA,
- 33:06Speaker 1: G League, or WNBA, or affiliate team. Or three, been
- 33:11Speaker 1: listed on an NFL or other professional football league roster,
- 33:15Speaker 1: or an NBA, G League, or WNBA roster. The announcement
- 33:18Speaker 1: stated Sankey, quote, is authorized to enforce this expectation with
- 33:24Speaker 1: penalties against member institutions, end quote. Now, an SEC spokesperson
- 33:29Speaker 1: later told ESPN the penalties are, quote, to be announced.
- 33:32Speaker 1: So it's a little bit different than what the Big
- 33:33Speaker 1: Ten said. Hey, you can lose up to half of
- 33:36Speaker 1: your remaining games, plus face it fine. The SEC is
- 33:40Speaker 1: saying we'll cross that bridge when we get to it,
- 33:43Speaker 1: is what they're saying. Now, as I mentioned, there's been
- 33:47Speaker 1: a lot of rhetoric around flying about all of this.
- 33:51Speaker 1: Lane Kiffin saying that these players are being deprived of
- 33:57Speaker 1: their opportunity. They would not have tried to make it
- 34:00Speaker 1: in the NFL had this option been available to them.
- 34:06Speaker 1: And again, at the crux of this is the five
- 34:11Speaker 1: for five rule. And you talk about unintended consequences. It
- 34:16Speaker 1: kind of reminds me when the NIL ruling first came down.
- 34:20Speaker 1: There's no doubt in my mind that college football programs,
- 34:26Speaker 1: head coaches, their general managers, the athletic directors, university presidents,
- 34:30Speaker 1: had no idea the Pandora's box that was going to
- 34:32Speaker 1: be open when NIL was introduced, the levels and extremes
- 34:39Speaker 1: that it would go to. And now we hear terms
- 34:40Speaker 1: like guardrails and prohibitions and things like that that have
- 34:44Speaker 1: to happen with regard to NIL. Well, so far that
- 34:46Speaker 1: hasn't happened. So it kind of reminds me of that
- 34:49Speaker 1: in terms of this being uncharted territory, a lot of
- 34:54Speaker 1: folks not having any idea the route that this was
- 34:57Speaker 1: going to take.
- 34:59Speaker 2: So you had to, you had to start the rule
- 35:02Speaker 2: at some point though.
- 35:04Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 35:04Speaker 2: Right. You had to, you had to pick a date and,
- 35:08Speaker 2: you know, I guess I don't understand why it couldn't
- 35:11Speaker 2: have been further out into the future, but you needed to,
- 35:15Speaker 2: to be able to, have a date to start to
- 35:19Speaker 2: where these red shirts were no longer a factor. You
- 35:21Speaker 2: needed to clear the backlog at some point.
- 35:23Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 35:23Speaker 1: And what complicated also was the super senior, the COVID
- 35:27Speaker 1: years that were being factored into it as well. I
- 35:30Speaker 1: think they could have grandfathered those in staying starting 2022-2023.
- 35:35Speaker 1: And anyone that entered from that point on, you can
- 35:39Speaker 1: be grandfathered in if you went four straight years like
- 35:41Speaker 1: Cole Hudson. And Hudson did not sign an NFL contract.
- 35:45Speaker 1: He wasn't trying to transfer to another school. He wanted
- 35:48Speaker 1: only to return to his school at Texas. That's another
- 35:52Speaker 1: marked difference between him and Daquan Wright. You know, because
- 35:55Speaker 1: I saw some action on social media. Well, the Texas
- 35:57Speaker 1: guy wanted to do the same thing. No, it's not
- 35:59Speaker 1: even remotely close. He didn't sign a contract. He wasn't
- 36:02Speaker 1: in a training camp. He certainly didn't dress. It was
- 36:05Speaker 1: on the sidelines, as Wright was, with Cleveland for their
- 36:08Speaker 1: preseason game against Buffalo. None of that. He got no money.
- 36:12Speaker 1: It was a rookie minicamp thing that he went through.
- 36:15Speaker 1: never was signed to a contract and was released and
- 36:20Speaker 1: all the while taking summer classes, by the way, at Texas. So,
- 36:26Speaker 1: you know, that's a major difference there. But this is
- 36:31Speaker 1: the thing and this is how it's going to continue
- 36:35Speaker 1: to be a major issue for a while. I mean,
- 36:40Speaker 1: they're going, you know, the lawyers are going to argue
- 36:44Speaker 1: that their student athletes, their clients, the student athletes, and
- 36:49Speaker 1: this is kind of what Lane Kiffin was saying, never
- 36:53Speaker 1: had a chance to follow through on a fifth year.
- 36:58Speaker 1: They never had a chance to do that. Their eligibility
- 37:02Speaker 1: supposedly was up. So, that's why they tried to make
- 37:07Speaker 1: it on an NFL roster. Then five for five happens. Oh, well,
- 37:11Speaker 1: if we'd known that, we never would have left in
- 37:12Speaker 1: the first place. I want my fifth year. So, That's
- 37:17Speaker 1: going to be their big contention on that. But I
- 37:21Speaker 1: do think that the real demarcation is going to come
- 37:30Speaker 1: in whether you signed a pro contract. Even if the
- 37:34Speaker 1: contract doesn't pay anything, it's contingent upon you making the club.
- 37:41Speaker 1: I think once you put your name on the dotted line,
- 37:43Speaker 1: you become a professional athlete. And I think that may
- 37:47Speaker 1: be where this falls on the line of that. I
- 37:49Speaker 1: don't know. A judge will have to decide it.
- 37:51Speaker 2: There's no G League equivalent to the NFL.
- 37:53Speaker 10: No.
- 37:54Speaker 1: And let me also say this, too. In basketball, players,
- 38:00Speaker 1: and Daylon Swain just went through this, went through the
- 38:03Speaker 1: evaluation process at the Portsmouth and Chicago pre-draft camps where
- 38:09Speaker 1: you get the feedback. Those are pre-draft camps. Now, that's pre-draft.
- 38:15Speaker 1: So you have the pre-draft camps, and then they tell you, yeah,
- 38:18Speaker 1: you might be second round. Yeah, you might be lottery.
- 38:23Speaker 1: You might be first. And Daylon Swain decided to go
- 38:25Speaker 1: pro because he was told he'd be a first-round pick,
- 38:27Speaker 1: and he was. So he had that option. He could
- 38:32Speaker 1: have come back to Texas based on the information that
- 38:36Speaker 1: he had with those people. The NFL doesn't really have that.
- 38:40Speaker 1: And that's where a lot of this is being put
- 38:41Speaker 1: to the test now.
- 38:42Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 38:43Speaker 2: And Texas Tech, we talked earlier about Joey McGuire and
- 38:46Speaker 2: his kind of, not threats, but foreshadowing that they were
- 38:50Speaker 2: looking to go this route just under a half an
- 38:55Speaker 2: hour ago. They signed Thomas Castellanos, who played quarterback, of course,
- 39:01Speaker 2: through Florida State, Castellanos. Yeah, that Castellanos.
- 39:05Speaker 10: And he.
- 39:07Speaker 2: Was at Dolphins minicamp, but was undrafted. So it's the
- 39:11Speaker 2: same deal as Cole Hudson.
- 39:12Speaker 1: Yeah, except.
- 39:14Speaker 2: Except he's not going back to his former school. That's
- 39:16Speaker 2: exactly right. That being Boston College.
- 39:18Speaker 1: That's right. That's right. So he could be... I said
- 39:21Speaker 1: Florida State, I meant Boston College.
- 39:22Speaker 2: Well, he was at Florida State. Then he went to UCF.
- 39:24Speaker 2: Then he went to Boston College.
- 39:25Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly. Well-traveled.
- 39:27Speaker 4: So....
- 39:30Speaker 1: We're going to see how this is going to go.
- 39:31Speaker 1: And by the way, here we are talking about Texas Tech.
- 39:35Speaker 1: The Big 12 is supposed to come out with a
- 39:36Speaker 1: statement today.
- 39:38Speaker 10: Mysteriously quiet. Where's our cricket sound effect? And the ACC
- 39:42Speaker 10: was supposed to come out with a statement today.
- 39:44Speaker 2: Notre Dame said they agreed.
- 39:45Speaker 1: Yes. Yeah, they didn't want any part of this.
- 39:47Speaker 2: Thank goodness. They sent us a memorandum of understanding. They understand.
- 39:52Speaker 1: Yeah, they understand the assignment. And Marcus Freeman, by the way,
- 39:56Speaker 1: it said, it would be too problematic, A, at this point,
- 40:00Speaker 1: to get somebody in the system, in our system. And
- 40:03Speaker 1: more importantly, he said, B, Someone who could make it
- 40:07Speaker 1: academically at Notre Dame.
- 40:08Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 40:09Speaker 1: That could fit in there into a grad program.
- 40:13Speaker 2: Yeah, but can't they just opt out if they don't
- 40:15Speaker 2: fit in academically?
- 40:17Speaker 1: I suppose so, right? All right. So anyway, that's going
- 40:20Speaker 1: to be something that's going to go into greater discussion.
- 40:24Speaker 1: We're going to find out more about this coming up.
- 40:27Speaker 1: All right. Coming up next, we'll go back to some
- 40:30Speaker 1: regular football talk. We're going to hear... from Arch Manning,
- 40:34Speaker 1: and we will also hear from D'Amico Ryan. So from
- 40:36Speaker 1: the college and the pro, where the lines are clearly distinct.
- 40:40Speaker 1: They are not blurred there. Those two gentlemen and those
- 40:46Speaker 1: two teams as well. By the way, when we come back,
- 40:50Speaker 1: I want you to play the Sean McVay response. Did
- 40:53Speaker 1: you hear his response to this? You're going to love it.
- 40:56Speaker 1: So we'll have that for you.
- 40:58Speaker 2: I actually did. It's great. You guys are going to
- 41:00Speaker 2: love this.
- 41:01Speaker 1: Yeah, we'll have that when we come back here on
- 41:02Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone and the IR
- 41:04Speaker 1: Radio app.
- 41:06Speaker 4: Yesterday on the program....
- 41:27Speaker 1: I think it was, maybe it was Monday. You bumped
- 41:29Speaker 1: back with, was it Baby Come Back?
- 41:33Speaker 2: Baby Come Back.
- 41:34Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 41:35Speaker 1: And I said, I think it was on Monday. I said,
- 41:36Speaker 1: you're getting an early jump on Yacht Rock Wednesday. So
- 41:39Speaker 1: we might as well do here, you know, might as
- 41:42Speaker 1: well have really, on Yacht Rock Wednesday, players, one of
- 41:48Speaker 1: those who fit right in. This is their refrain right here,
- 41:51Speaker 1: their song.
- 41:52Speaker 7: This time I'm in. It's crazy to do it again.
- 42:08Speaker 7: But how could I possibly lose?
- 42:10Speaker 1: How could I lose, right?
- 42:12Speaker 2: Craig, this is my first time seeing a player. Yeah.
- 42:16Speaker 2: That is some hair.
- 42:17Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, they had lots of hair. If you were
- 42:20Speaker 1: to look at, well, heck, it was at a big
- 42:23Speaker 1: hair era, the 70s and 80s there.
- 42:25Speaker 2: Did you ever have the big hair?
- 42:28Speaker 1: It was never real long hair. But I did have
- 42:31Speaker 1: the late 70s. I had the perm thing going for
- 42:34Speaker 1: a little bit. Part of it was because I was
- 42:36Speaker 1: in a play in college and needed that. And I
- 42:38Speaker 1: kept it for a while. But then I was like, yeah,
- 42:40Speaker 1: I don't like this anymore.
- 42:41Speaker 2: What play were you in?
- 42:42Speaker 1: Oh, I was in several. But the one specific one
- 42:45Speaker 1: was Camelot. Was it at the time?
- 42:48Speaker 2: You might have mentioned that once before, but is it
- 42:50Speaker 2: just theater or musical theater?
- 42:52Speaker 9: Both.
- 42:53Speaker 1: When I was 17, I was in the North Carolina
- 42:56Speaker 1: Shakespeare Festival. I was in three productions there, Much Ado
- 42:59Speaker 1: About Nothing and The Merchant of Venice. And then they
- 43:02Speaker 1: would do one non-Shakespearean production that was kind of a
- 43:05Speaker 1: period piece, Man for All Seasons. And then I was in...
- 43:11Speaker 1: theater productions, first couple of colleges I went to. And
- 43:14Speaker 1: then I was like, I got to get down to business.
- 43:16Speaker 2: Did you ever think you would explore that after college?
- 43:19Speaker 1: Maybe when I was, you know, 17, 18 going on.
- 43:22Speaker 1: I remember my dad saying to me, do you know
- 43:25Speaker 1: how many good actors he sent? And I mean good
- 43:27Speaker 1: ones who are in New York jerking sodas and waiting
- 43:31Speaker 1: tables because they can't get a break. And it did
- 43:34Speaker 1: kind of make sense. And it wasn't what, I enjoyed it,
- 43:37Speaker 1: but it wasn't, like a passion for me. I liked it,
- 43:41Speaker 1: but it wasn't like the passion that I had, obviously,
- 43:44Speaker 1: to be around sports and then ultimately to broadcast sports
- 43:48Speaker 1: as well. So, yeah, I moved on. I got off
- 43:51Speaker 1: the playground and got back into serious things. I did,
- 43:55Speaker 1: before we move into hearing from some things from Arch Manning,
- 44:01Speaker 1: we've been talking clearly a lot about this SEC and
- 44:05Speaker 1: Big Ten prohibition on players who Couldn't cut it in
- 44:10Speaker 1: the NFL and trying to make it back into college football.
- 44:14Speaker 1: Stuart Mandel, who's one of the respected college sports writers.
- 44:18Speaker 1: A lot of people don't like his work and disagree
- 44:21Speaker 1: with him and all that kind of stuff. Writes for
- 44:23Speaker 1: The Athletic. And he titled a piece today, penned a
- 44:31Speaker 1: piece entitled, Kudos... to the Big Ten and SEC for
- 44:35Speaker 1: taking a stand. Is conference-led enforcement next? And that's a
- 44:39Speaker 1: very valid question. And he goes on, you know, he
- 44:43Speaker 1: broke down the sternly worded statement saying that, you know,
- 44:49Speaker 1: individuals who choose to leave college athletics sign professional contracts, blah, blah, blah.
- 44:53Speaker 1: All of that begs the question, can't you guys not
- 44:56Speaker 1: permit them yourselves? Well, as it turns out, they did that.
- 45:00Speaker 1: The Big Ten did it. Then the SEC did it.
- 45:03Speaker 1: And he said, over the last two years, pretty much
- 45:06Speaker 1: every longstanding NCAA eligibility rule has been struck down by
- 45:12Speaker 1: a state or federal judge. Junior college years count towards
- 45:16Speaker 1: your NCAA eligibility? Not so, said the Diego Pavia judge.
- 45:21Speaker 1: A G League player can't come back to college three
- 45:23Speaker 1: years after turning pro? Sure he can if Alabama needs
- 45:26Speaker 1: a big man, Charles Bediaco, who played five games before
- 45:30Speaker 1: a different judge reversed that one. Heck, Not even betting
- 45:34Speaker 1: on your own team is a disqualifier anymore, said the
- 45:36Speaker 1: Brendan Sorsby judge in Texas. In that instance, though, the
- 45:41Speaker 1: Big 12 took matters into its own hands, suing Texas
- 45:44Speaker 1: Tech after Attorney General Ken Paxton threatened to sue them
- 45:48Speaker 1: if it punished Sorsby. The gambit worked. Tech and Sorsby
- 45:51Speaker 1: backed down amidst intense national backlash. Perhaps that move by
- 45:57Speaker 1: Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark emboldened Tony Petitti, the commissioner
- 46:02Speaker 1: of the big 10 and his presence in 80s to
- 46:04Speaker 1: take on the NFL back to college issue themselves. So,
- 46:09Speaker 1: and he makes a very valid point. This is something
- 46:11Speaker 1: we brought up earlier. The new five-year eligibility policy has
- 46:16Speaker 1: elicited a cascade of lawsuits from the class of athletes
- 46:20Speaker 1: who left school in the spring after completing their fourth season.
- 46:24Speaker 1: While it is impossible to keep track of them all,
- 46:29Speaker 1: one judge's ruling in Louisiana last week caught everyone's attention.
- 46:32Speaker 1: Among the 33 plaintiffs to whom he granted a fifth
- 46:35Speaker 1: year were several football players, including former Ole Miss starters
- 46:39Speaker 1: Daquan Wright, Zavian Harris, and Whitey Williams, and former LSU
- 46:43Speaker 1: player Jack Pyburn, who were on NFL rosters. Now, Pyburn
- 46:48Speaker 1: played for Tampa Bay. In fact, he sacked Cade Klubnick
- 46:52Speaker 1: in a preseason game when Tampa Bay was playing the Jets.
- 46:56Speaker 1: Piper was playing in the NFL. Mandel goes on to say,
- 47:02Speaker 1: a hard fireball has long prohibited any players, even declared
- 47:05Speaker 1: for the NFL draft, much less gone through preseason from
- 47:09Speaker 1: returning to school, in granting these players a fifth season
- 47:12Speaker 1: of eligibility. The judge unilaterally declared last Thursday that they
- 47:16Speaker 1: could return to college and enter the transfer portal so
- 47:19Speaker 1: long as they were released by their NFL teams and
- 47:21Speaker 1: paid back any money they received. So, and then he
- 47:26Speaker 1: goes on to say, Wright, for one, had not even
- 47:28Speaker 1: officially been cut before he entered the portal. and committed
- 47:32Speaker 1: to who else? His former Ole Miss coach, LSU's Lane Kiffin.
- 47:36Speaker 1: Harris reportedly headed there too. Folks across college football were peeved.
- 47:40Speaker 1: So anyway, that's part of the article that Mandel had
- 47:44Speaker 1: about this. And I have to say, I just feel
- 47:49Speaker 1: that what we're going to see out of this is
- 47:54Speaker 1: Judge is very busy. I mean, we just got through
- 47:58Speaker 1: watching Judge v. Judge involving the Little League World Series.
- 48:04Speaker 1: We just got through seeing that. Judges have already been
- 48:07Speaker 1: active on this measure as well. So this is where
- 48:13Speaker 1: the rubber is going to meet the road on this
- 48:14Speaker 1: thing because as Mandel points out and as others have
- 48:19Speaker 1: pointed out, you go get yourself a judge, you find
- 48:23Speaker 1: the right judge, you can strike down anything. Now, some
- 48:27Speaker 1: other judge in a higher court may say that that
- 48:30Speaker 1: judge is is full of baloney and throw it out.
- 48:34Speaker 1: But at the ground level, you can go out and
- 48:37Speaker 1: try to find your judge who will agree with you
- 48:39Speaker 1: and say, yeah, I wouldn't have gone to try out
- 48:41Speaker 1: for an NFL team had I known that the five
- 48:44Speaker 1: for five was going to pass and that I was
- 48:46Speaker 1: going to get a fifth year of eligibility. I never
- 48:49Speaker 1: would have gone to that. I never would have tried that.
- 48:51Speaker 1: I didn't have that opportunity and you need to grandfather
- 48:53Speaker 1: me in. That's going to be that side. And then
- 48:57Speaker 1: the other side is going to be, yeah, but you did,
- 48:59Speaker 1: you know, He kind of did. He kind of went
- 49:03Speaker 1: to an NFL camp and he signed a contract. In
- 49:07Speaker 1: the case of Jack Pyburn, you suited up and you
- 49:09Speaker 1: got a sack of Cade Klubnick in a preseason game.
- 49:14Speaker 1: So following this is going to be real interesting. See
- 49:17Speaker 1: where it goes. And you made a good point. Jacob,
- 49:20Speaker 1: saying there isn't really enough time to get this thing
- 49:23Speaker 1: resolved before season because this stuff did not start until
- 49:28Speaker 1: the back half of the month of August.
- 49:31Speaker 2: Is anyone going to get hit with these huge fines
- 49:34Speaker 2: that you talked about in the last segment?
- 49:36Speaker 1: You wonder.
- 49:36Speaker 2: Could they go back and you know, retroactively do that
- 49:40Speaker 2: to somebody who suits up one of these former pros
- 49:43Speaker 2: in week one or week two?
- 49:44Speaker 1: And they say.
- 49:45Speaker 2: What if it's not in a conference game?
- 49:47Speaker 3: Right.
- 49:47Speaker 1: Okay. So say somebody did it with Ohio State and
- 49:50Speaker 1: the kid plays against Ball State. And he did it
- 49:54Speaker 1: under a TRO. And again, I'm separating the situation, not
- 50:01Speaker 1: only from Cole Hudson, but from any other student athlete who,
- 50:06Speaker 1: who did what Cole did, and not sign a contract.
- 50:09Speaker 1: I think that's the demarcation, the line of demarcation. Did
- 50:12Speaker 1: you sign a contract? Were you getting money? Were you
- 50:17Speaker 1: in a camp? Now, this one judge last week said,
- 50:19Speaker 1: pay back the money and all's good. You're good. You're good.
- 50:22Speaker 1: What are you going to say to Jack Pyburn? Okay,
- 50:26Speaker 1: apologize to Kate Klubnick for sacking him. You're good. You
- 50:29Speaker 1: can go to LSU. That's what I think is going
- 50:33Speaker 1: to be real interesting to follow.
- 50:34Speaker 2: So what if they try and turn around and say, fine,
- 50:39Speaker 2: or penalize or suspend Ryan Day at Ohio State if
- 50:42Speaker 2: they were to play somebody? One of these guys comes in,
- 50:45Speaker 2: transfers there, such and such. And then Ohio State just says, no,
- 50:48Speaker 2: we're not paying that. Your ban's not legal.
- 50:51Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 50:52Speaker 1: So that's it. But this is the Big Ten saying it,
- 50:56Speaker 1: not the NCAA.
- 50:57Speaker 4: Okay.
- 50:58Speaker 5: Exactly.
- 50:58Speaker 1: I think it's a different thing in your own conference
- 51:00Speaker 1: if your conference is telling you. That's why LSU— But
- 51:02Speaker 1: what's the difference? Couldn't they sue the conference? Sure they could.
- 51:05Speaker 1: They could. They could also face, you know, harsher penalties.
- 51:10Speaker 1: Look at what happened to Michigan from the Big Ten
- 51:13Speaker 1: with what they did with Harbaugh. So, in other words,
- 51:17Speaker 1: you better play ball with your fellow conference members. You
- 51:21Speaker 1: can go after the NCAA and their ivory tower in
- 51:23Speaker 1: Indianapolis and all that kind of stuff. That's on you.
- 51:25Speaker 1: That's your idea.
- 51:26Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 51:27Speaker 1: But when you start messing with the boys in Chicago,
- 51:29Speaker 1: the Big Ten office, and trying to go rogue on them,
- 51:34Speaker 1: ask Texas Tech about that.
- 51:35Speaker 2: Yeah, some of the same questions that came up with
- 51:37Speaker 2: them in the early part of the summer are going
- 51:40Speaker 2: to come up maybe in the SEC this fall.
- 51:43Speaker 1: I think so.
- 51:44Speaker 2: With LSU.
- 51:46Speaker 1: Okay, back to talking about Arch Manning. And Arch was
- 51:53Speaker 1: asked about the— the whole thing when Sark mentioned that
- 52:00Speaker 1: at times the scrimmage got sloppy, messy, missed assignments, maybe
- 52:07Speaker 1: the heat had something to do with it, maybe some
- 52:09Speaker 1: of the other stuff, who knows, but Arch was asked
- 52:12Speaker 1: how motivating was it to hear Sark call the offense
- 52:15Speaker 1: sloppy and at times lethargic?
- 52:17Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, I think it was a little sloppy and lethargic,
- 52:20Speaker 5: but You know, we had a good day today, and
- 52:22Speaker 5: we're going to learn from it and get better.
- 52:24Speaker 1: Okay.
- 52:24Speaker 5: All right.
- 52:25Speaker 1: Facing the Will Muschamp defense, has it forced the offense
- 52:30Speaker 1: overall and Manning in specific to get better?
- 52:34Speaker 5: Yeah, 100%. They throw a lot of stuff at us,
- 52:37Speaker 5: real high intensity. The practices are fun, and it's been
- 52:42Speaker 5: fun getting to go against him, such a highly respected coach.
- 52:45Speaker 1: Okay. Arch has made reference to growing defensively. getting better.
- 52:53Speaker 1: What will that growth look like? How will we all
- 52:55Speaker 1: be able to see that he's growing as a quarterback?
- 52:57Speaker 1: I think just continue to be myself and make the
- 53:01Speaker 1: most out of it. You know, you can't really say too.
- 53:03Speaker 5: Often that you're the quarterback of the University of Texas,
- 53:05Speaker 5: so I'm going to make the most out of it
- 53:06Speaker 5: and enjoy it.
- 53:08Speaker 1: He was then asked, all starting quarterbacks are asked by
- 53:10Speaker 1: the backups. They're all asked about the backups. So you
- 53:14Speaker 1: have KJ Lacey and D'Abel. And he was asked for
- 53:19Speaker 1: his thoughts on their progress bell the incoming freshman lacy
- 53:25Speaker 1: the redshirt freshman.
- 53:26Speaker 5: Yeah they're really good players they can make every throw
- 53:28Speaker 5: they're getting smarter and smarter um acting like pros so
- 53:32Speaker 5: it's been fun being in the same.
- 53:33Speaker 1: Room as them okay um I got to ask you, Jake,
- 53:37Speaker 1: because you were editing this sound. This next question, was
- 53:39Speaker 1: this a Kirk Bowles question? Yes, sir. Had to be.
- 53:41Speaker 1: Had to be. The question was, would you consider coming
- 53:46Speaker 1: back next year? I don't know.
- 53:48Speaker 5: I'm just focused on today and getting better today. Yeah.
- 53:52Speaker 1: I got to answer that right now. It's August of your,
- 53:57Speaker 1: you know, junior year.
- 53:58Speaker 2: Did you need me to tell you what Archer was
- 54:00Speaker 2: going to say to that one either? I think you
- 54:01Speaker 2: could have predicted that.
- 54:02Speaker 1: Yeah, I think a lot of guys, you could say
- 54:04Speaker 1: the same thing. He was also asked about his relationship
- 54:06Speaker 1: with a center, with Connor Robertson.
- 54:08Speaker 5: Very important. Krav's my best friend.
- 54:11Speaker 1: What a guy.
- 54:12Speaker 5: What a guy. He's got great juice. Just, you know,
- 54:16Speaker 5: it's definitely a benefit having such a close friend of
- 54:20Speaker 5: yours as your center. I mean, my brother was my
- 54:22Speaker 5: center in high school. Now, basically, another brother of mine
- 54:24Speaker 5: is my center. So it's a blessing.
- 54:26Speaker 1: Okay. All right. That's good. And, um, is this football
- 54:31Speaker 1: team as a whole and Manning in specific better set
- 54:35Speaker 1: up for a fast start?
- 54:36Speaker 5: I sure hope so. We got to start fast. You're
- 54:39Speaker 5: ready to go. Just, we got a lot of good
- 54:43Speaker 5: guys around me and we're ready to go. Let's go
- 54:46Speaker 5: back to some guys catching the football. First of all,
- 54:48Speaker 5: Cam Coleman has been amazing with some of the stuff.
- 54:50Speaker 5: Has it surprised Arch?
- 54:52Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 54:52Speaker 5: I mean, he can surprise me every day. Um, All
- 54:55Speaker 5: of them are making really good catches. Emmitt, Ryan, Weese,
- 54:59Speaker 5: Jermaine Bishop, Chris Stewart, Cohen, all those guys. I'm excited
- 55:05Speaker 5: for the whole group.
- 55:05Speaker 1: All right, he brought up Jermaine Bishop. How about that
- 55:07Speaker 1: true freshman?
- 55:08Speaker 5: Yeah, Jermaine, if I had to characterize, it's like football
- 55:14Speaker 5: kind of comes easy to him. That's the biggest compliment
- 55:17Speaker 5: I have for him. He's a natural athlete, and everything
- 55:19Speaker 5: kind of comes easy to him. He works really hard, though.
- 55:21Speaker 1: All right, he was asked if he has talked to
- 55:24Speaker 1: the newcomers. about what it means to play at Texas.
- 55:27Speaker 5: No, not really, to be honest. It's just football at
- 55:30Speaker 5: the end of the day. I think they handled themselves well.
- 55:33Speaker 5: Making it bigger than it is isn't going to do anything.
- 55:36Speaker 1: One more from Arch here asked about the new running backs,
- 55:39Speaker 1: Hollywood Smothers, Relique Brown. What do you see from those guys? Yeah,
- 55:42Speaker 1: it's great.
- 55:43Speaker 5: They're dynamic players, can score from anywhere on the field,
- 55:45Speaker 5: and just good guys. So I'm glad they're on my team.
- 55:48Speaker 1: Okay.
- 55:49Speaker 5: All right.
- 55:49Speaker 1: We'll hear some more from Arch coming up next hour.
- 55:51Speaker 1: We're going to hear from Justin Cryer coming up, the
- 55:53Speaker 1: Longhorns transfer linebacker. And from D'Amico Rides, when we continue
- 55:57Speaker 1: on Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone and the
- 55:59Speaker 1: iHeartRadio app.
- 56:01Speaker 4: Here on.
- 56:15Speaker 1: The Yacht Rock Wednesday, I don't think, and correct me
- 56:20Speaker 1: maybe because you've been at it for about a year.
- 56:24Speaker 1: But I don't think we've had an Olivia Newton-John offering
- 56:29Speaker 1: on a Yacht Rock Wednesday. No. And there aren't many
- 56:32Speaker 1: to be, if we're being completely honest here. For example,
- 56:34Speaker 1: this song, Magic, is on an album where she does
- 56:42Speaker 1: that song that made a lot of rock and roll headlines.
- 56:46Speaker 1: Enthusiasts roll their eyes or maybe get queasy in the stomach.
- 56:49Speaker 1: And that was the song Physical. Let's get physical. You
- 56:53Speaker 1: know that one.
- 56:54Speaker 2: It's on the same album.
- 56:57Speaker 1: Can't say I'm a fan of that song.
- 57:01Speaker 5: Or Xanadu.
- 57:01Speaker 1: In fact, I like the late Olivia Newton-John's early offerings better.
- 57:06Speaker 1: The one that's a little more that fall into actually
- 57:09Speaker 1: the yacht genre. country category like let me be there
- 57:14Speaker 1: uh let me let me be there that's that's one
- 57:16Speaker 1: of them um there's a couple others like that as
- 57:19Speaker 1: well but this was definitely a yacht rock offering therefore
- 57:23Speaker 1: it falls into the category okay um somebody asked me
- 57:28Speaker 1: on the text line that said um regarding the sec
- 57:33Speaker 1: with the ruling with regards to teams uh taking nfl
- 57:37Speaker 1: athletes back can you explain what It means without withdrawing.
- 57:40Speaker 1: Not sure what constitutes. And he said, never mind. Just
- 57:43Speaker 1: heard your comment on this. Yeah, the properly withdrawing from
- 57:48Speaker 1: the NFL club without having signed a contract. And I
- 57:53Speaker 1: think that's how that thing came down and their ruling
- 57:59Speaker 1: on it. And again, we haven't heard the last on this. Good, bad, indifferent,
- 58:02Speaker 1: no matter what side of the fence you happen to
- 58:06Speaker 1: land on. No matter how you feel about it, we
- 58:11Speaker 1: haven't heard the end of it. There's going to be more,
- 58:13Speaker 1: and there's going to be legal. Just take my word
- 58:16Speaker 1: for it. That's going to happen. In the meantime, teams
- 58:20Speaker 1: are getting ready for the season, including the Longhorns, and
- 58:22Speaker 1: Justin Cryer, the Florida State transfer linebacker, was asked his
- 58:25Speaker 1: thoughts on adjusting to all things Texas. It's been pretty good.
- 58:30Speaker 11: I'll be honest, out of rough first couple weeks, just
- 58:35Speaker 11: coming back from a place that's pretty far, I'm from
- 58:37Speaker 11: the area, from the Houston area, so coming back home
- 58:40Speaker 11: definitely was something that was really important to me. But
- 58:43Speaker 11: I put my all into everything, so I kind of had,
- 58:46Speaker 11: with the way things went, just the adjustment and moving
- 58:49Speaker 11: on to a new place was obviously going to be
- 58:51Speaker 11: a little difficult. But I think we have some good
- 58:54Speaker 11: teammates who helped me just kind of get adjusted.
- 58:57Speaker 4: All right.
- 58:57Speaker 1: He was also asked, settling on Texas, being from the
- 59:02Speaker 1: Houston area, even though he'd been in Tallahassee, was it
- 59:06Speaker 1: then a pretty happy and easy decision for him? Yeah, absolutely.
- 59:11Speaker 11: I got that call from Coach Muschamp. I kind of
- 59:13Speaker 11: figured it's where I wanted to be at. Just kind
- 59:16Speaker 11: of figured out where I wanted to go. And in
- 59:18Speaker 11: that process, when he gave me that call, I was
- 59:21Speaker 11: pretty certain it's where I wanted to be.
- 59:22Speaker 9: All right.
- 59:22Speaker 1: Well, speaking of Will Muschamp, how about, you know, Coach
- 59:27Speaker 1: Muschamp or some of the players calling Coach Champ, his pedigree?
- 59:30Speaker 1: How much did that go in convincing him? That was
- 59:32Speaker 1: the biggest point.
- 59:32Speaker 11: I mean, everywhere he's been at, some of the best
- 59:35Speaker 11: defenses in the country. He's someone who's an old school
- 59:38Speaker 11: scout coach. I mean, y'all have heard him. He gets
- 59:41Speaker 11: after you a little bit, but he produces the best players.
- 59:43Speaker 11: So I know what I was signing up for when
- 59:47Speaker 11: he gave me that call and I came up here
- 59:48Speaker 11: to talk to him. But again, everywhere he's been at,
- 59:51Speaker 11: everyone he's coached the last couple of years, you can
- 59:54Speaker 11: see that he's produced some of the best players defensively.
- 59:57Speaker 1: This opportunity i couldn't pass up on all right that's
- 59:59Speaker 1: justin cryer we'll hear more from him coming up next
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: hour and we will be back to wrap up our
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: number two on 13 under the zone craig way third
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: and final hour of the program here on sports radio
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: am 13 under the zone craig way joined by the
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: producer jay kerman Glad to have you with us. We
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: begin this final hour with what I felt was the
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: soundbite of the day yesterday in the world of sports.
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: And let me start by saying those of you who.
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: Heard me say earlier in the program about we've got
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: to get that soundbite from Sean McVay, the Rams head coach,
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: about all of this craziness going on with the NFL
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: and college football. We're still looking for it. We found
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: one soundbite from it, but it appears from what Jake
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: was researching that on the website of the Los Angeles Rams, therams.com,
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: they excised him. that particular part of the soundbite when
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: Sean McVay was asked about it. Because what remains is
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: pretty general stuff about, I don't know enough about it, yada, yada.
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: But he had something in there, and I don't want
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: to give it away in case we do find it,
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: because we're still searching for it to let you hear
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: about it. And I don't want to oversell it either,
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: but it's a good little soundbite there if we want it.
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: And I would say that would be the soundbite of
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: the day, if not for this. You may not have
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: seen it.
- 1:01:40Speaker 5: The....
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: Brand new sporting director for Austin FC. That's Khaled Elamad.
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: Was introduced at a news conference yesterday. His actual title
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: is Chief Soccer Officer and Sporting Director Khaled Elamad. He's
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: taking the position. He comes highly decorated. a championship team
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: as well in Minnesota, and he's a veteran of all this.
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: So I think this is a good get for Austin FC.
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: If this soundbite is any indication, I think it's a
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: great hire because he was asked about, you know, you
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: work so hard and you've had so much success, you know,
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: how do you make time for your family? How do you,
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: you know, make it all work and be able to
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: perform well at your job when you've got all these
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: other things and perhaps distractions or pressure or that kind
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: of thing? And I thought he had a pretty good
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: response to it.
- 1:02:44Speaker 12: I think a lot of credit goes to my beautiful
- 1:02:48Speaker 12: family here.
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: They are just super supportive.
- 1:02:54Speaker 12: Part of my culture, I'm a war refugee, so things
- 1:02:58Speaker 12: I've seen and experienced in my life I ultimately don't
- 1:03:03Speaker 12: get fazed by a lot.
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: And I've also.
- 1:03:06Speaker 12: Learned that if you're surrounded with good people, just stay
- 1:03:08Speaker 12: calm and just take the right decision, the right decision.
- 1:03:11Speaker 12: And over time, that will come together. Other than that,
- 1:03:16Speaker 12: I work out and I eat donuts.
- 1:03:20Speaker 9: All right.
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: I'm applauding that. That's great. This is a guy, like
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: he said, he was a war refugee. He's from Lebanon. And, uh,
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: and instead I don't get too high or too low.
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: I don't let things really upset me that much. You
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: just go through and I just do my job. And
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: by the other night I work out and I eat donuts.
- 1:03:36Speaker 2: It's like a t-shirt you find at a cheesy beach store.
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: That's right.
- 1:03:40Speaker 2: I work out and I eat donuts.
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: You know what? There's a, there's a, there's a t-shirt
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: I wear. I sleep in it sometimes with, uh, I'll
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: sleep like in, uh, uh, workout shorts and a t-shirt
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: a lot of times. Um, and the t-shirt is from
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: a donut shop in Memphis, Tennessee called Gibson's Donuts. And
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: the story behind Gibson's Donuts is that the gentleman, and
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: I forgot his first name, but the last name is Gibson.
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: And he's like over 80 now, but he's been running
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: this donut shop for his fabulous donuts, by the way.
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: And it's just this little unassuming donut shop. And it's
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: there in Memphis and it has strong SEC ties to
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: be in Memphis, Tennessee. Um, I was introduced to the
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: donut shop through my good friend, Dave Woloshin, who was
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: the play-by-play voice of the Memphis Tigers. And Woloshin will
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: be down here with Memphis in December when they play
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: the Longwoods in basketball. And he took me to this
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: donut shop. He said, you got to meet this guy.
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: He's legendary. They have these great donuts and he knows
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: everything about the SEC and all this kind of stuff.
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: And so the first time I went in there was
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: literally one, maybe two days after the SEC after the
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: University of Texas and the University of Oklahoma announced they
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: were going to the SEC. This was five years ago
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: in 2021 when it was announced. So I was on
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: vacation and Linda and I were passing through Memphis and
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: we stopped to see Wolo and his wife Gail. We
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: stayed with them at their house. Dave and I were
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: friends going all the way back to both working at
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: KRLD in Dallas in the mid 80s. And Dave did
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: Texas A & M basketball for one year, but he
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: had come from Memphis and he went back to Memphis
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: and to assume the play-by-play duties for then Memphis State University,
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: now University of Memphis, the Memphis Tigers. And he's been
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: at it for over 40 years, their play-by-play voice. So
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: we go to meet this guy, older, kind of funny,
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: irascible kind of guy. And we're talking about different SEC
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: things and what I'm gonna see. And he came out
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: with a plate, a platter of donuts. And he said,
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: I want you to try a couple of these, just
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: have the bites and tell me what you think. And
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: he said, this first one, and it was like a
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: cream filled donut, which I really liked those. He said,
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: there's a bit of initiation that goes in with the
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: cream filled donut in the SEC. I said, really, what
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: is that? He said this, and he smashed it into
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: my face. And I just had Bavarian cream dripping off
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: my eyelashes and the whole place just erupted. Uh, in laughter.
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: Apparently this is a tradition. He does it with different
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: people that come in there. Rolo brings these guys in
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: there and Dave told me, he said, I knew he
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: was going to do that. I said, did you do
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: it on, bring me down there on purpose knowing he
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: was going to do that? He said, I wanted you
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: to meet him, but I had a feeling he was
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: going to do it. And he did. Great guy.
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: We've been back a couple of times. Good thing you
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: weren't going straight to a game.
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: No, it was very nice. And I haven't had to
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: pay for a donut in there. He's been really, really cool.
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: That's the tradeoff.
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. That was the tradeoff. But that's what I
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: think of on donuts. But here is, you know, the
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: brand new sporting director and chief soccer officer, Khaled El-Ahmad,
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: who said, I work out and I eat donuts. So
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: you knew a follow-up question about donuts was going to happen.
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: Knowing the new sporting director, chief soccer officer, is a
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: big fan of donuts, are we expecting a pending Round
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: Rock Donuts collaboration, partnership, something like that?
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: So wait, is Round Rock a good place to go
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: get donuts?
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: Round Rock Donuts is a legendary local institution.
- 1:07:14Speaker 5: They didn't pay me to say this.
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: They probably shouldn't. He didn't know about Round Rock Donuts,
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: and the reporter said it's legendary.
- 1:07:25Speaker 2: Is Round Rock a good place to eat donuts? I
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: guess it depends where you go.
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: Yeah, right, right, exactly. So anyway, that to me was
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: the sound bite of the day. Other than that, I
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: work out and I eat donuts.
- 1:07:37Speaker 2: It's like in Game of Thrones, Tyrion. I drink and
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: I know things.
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: Yeah, right, exactly. So that's how that case is. Okay,
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: I mentioned, and we're going to hear more From Arch Manning,
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: we're going to hear more from Justin Cryer, the Longhorns linebacker.
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: We're going to hear more from D'Amico Ryans this hour
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: as well. I wanted to get to some other college
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: football notes. First of all, Arian Carter, the Tennessee linebacker,
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: has had his suspension reduced from two games to one.
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: Danny White, the athletic director, said he doesn't deserve this
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: unnecessary distraction. He is everything that's right about college sports
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: a team leader has already earned his degree. He accepted
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: a flight from an agent. He elected to enter the
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: NFL draft in the offseason. He accepted a flight from
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: an agent valued at $ 427. 48. However, amid Carter's draft preparation,
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: his team discovered a toe injury that required surgery, which
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: would have prevented him from working out in front of
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: several NFL teams for several months. So Carter withdrew from
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: the draft before the deadline for underclassmen to decide, and
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: he repaid the money before disengaging from the agent, according
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: to Tennessee. Josh Heupel, the head coach, called it outdated
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: and BS. And then the athletic director said, while I
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: strongly agree with Josh Heupel's comment about how ridiculous this
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: is in our current environment, one game is better than two.
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: If players around the country are allowed to leave NFL
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: camps and play college football, the NCAA should do the
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: right thing and drop it altogether. If that were the case.
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: But what we've seen in the last 24 hours is
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: both the Big Ten and the SEC saying this is
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: not going to happen. Players are not going to be
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: allowed to leave NFL camps and play college football. It's
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: not going to happen. Of course, there's been all this
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: uproar around the sport. The court decisions in multiple states
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: introducing the possibility of players who spent the summer on
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: NFL rosters. That's also a bit hyperbolic. They didn't spend
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: the entire summer on NFL rosters. There were guys who
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: went and tried out. But former Ole Miss tight end
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: Daquan Wright, as we discussed, Was cut by the Cleveland Browns.
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: He did actually suit up for the game against Buffalo
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: last Saturday, but did not get into the game. He
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: didn't suit up in their first preseason game against the Bears.
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: Did suit up for the second. Did not get into
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: the game. And was planning today to sign with LSU
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: to complete his fifth year of eligibility this fall.
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: Is available, by the way, on the college football fantasy app.
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: Is he really?
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: I checked, yeah.
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: They're kind of jumping the gun, I would say.
- 1:10:33Speaker 2: He's in an Ole Miss uniform.
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: There you go. You know, with regard to this deal
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: with Arian Carter, the SECs, well, the college football in general,
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: college athletes are allowed to hire agents to handle the
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: NIL stuff, name, image, and likeness contracts, and revenue sharing
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: deals with the schools. But signing with an agent to
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: begin a professional career has previously meant permanent loss of eligibility. Now,
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: Tennessee reported the violation. They said, here's our deal. He
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: signed with the agent who was going to go, but
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: he had a toe injury. So he couldn't work out,
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: did not work out with any teams, did not sign
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: with anybody, and has repaid the money for the plane
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: ticket that was sent to him by his agent, $ 427.
- 1:11:27Speaker 10: 48.
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: And the NCAA said, thank you for self-reporting. That's a
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: two-game suspension. And Tennessee's like, what? So then they went
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: back and they appealed it again and they talked about it.
- 1:11:40Speaker 10: And then it's been reduced to one game. Now, this
- 1:11:44Speaker 10: is ridiculous. I mean, yeah, I'm with Josh Heupel here.
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: This, I think, is a much clearer case of forgiving
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: and forgetting than the other thing that's going on.
- 1:11:57Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, not even close.
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: Yeah. Now, there is a common thread on both. And
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: that common thread is.
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: Lane Kiffin's perspective and that of the attorneys is that
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: these guys, they didn't have the option, you know, or
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: they didn't think they had the option. Otherwise, they never
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: would have gone to the NFL draft. We don't really
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: know that. We don't really know that they wouldn't have gone,
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: even if they'd had that fifth year available to them.
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: That we don't know. And for the agents and for
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: the family representatives, and most importantly for the lawyers, who
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: are arguing this before a judge, say, we would not
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: have done this had we known. And Arian Carter's case,
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: we would not have accepted the plane ticket had we
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: known about that. And the answer to both is, yeah,
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: but you did.
- 1:12:51Speaker 2: You did.
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: Now, the punishment for Carter should be far less than
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: what it is. And I think one game's fair enough.
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: who's Tennessee playing in their opener? It's going to.
- 1:13:04Speaker 2: Be a three name directional school.
- 1:13:05Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: It's going to be a tomato can. Let's see.
- 1:13:07Speaker 5: I know.
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: Well, I know it, you know, you, like you said,
- 1:13:09Speaker 2: the significance of the reduction, it's Furman, the Paladins.
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: There you go. An FCS school.
- 1:13:13Speaker 2: But the reduction means he can play against Georgia tech,
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: which is a big game.
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: Exactly. Exactly. So that's a different kettle fish, I think,
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: than what's going on with this eligibility business. So, you know, it's,
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: It's goofy. It's crazy. It's nuts the way this thing
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: has gone down about this. And like I said, I
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: think this is just tip of the iceberg. I think
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: we all better settle back, settle in, buckle up, because
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: we're going to be involved in this for a bit.
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: I don't know that it'll get to.
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: You know, whatever it was with the Supreme court thing
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: with Kurt flood, you know, the major league baseballs and
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: the reserve clause and free agency in the early seventies. And,
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: and of course, um, you know, uh, of course the, uh, uh,
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: the Kurt flood, uh, career pretty much ended. He didn't
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: get a chance to benefit from that, but Andy Messer
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: Smith did. And Mike Marshall did. And several other free
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: at catfish Hunter, several catfish hunters, free agent deal, uh,
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: It's really weird. Here was a guy who was the
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: pitching star, the number one guy on that three-time world
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: champion Oakland A's team. Oakland, the only other team other
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: than the Yankees to win three World Series in a row.
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: The Dodgers are trying to be the first National League
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: team to do that this year. But other than the
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: New York Yankees, who won four in a row from
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: 36 through 39, and five in a row from 49
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: to 54, and three in a row from 98 through 2000,
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: The only other team to do it was the 72, 73,
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: and 74 Oakland Athletics. They were the only one. And
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: Catfish Hunter was the star of that team. Hunter, there
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: was something left out, erroneously left out of his contract.
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: And when baseball looked at it and the judge looked
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: at it, he got declared a free agent. So they
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: screwed up. So he signed with the Yankees and helped
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: them win a World Series. You got to cut back-to-back
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: World Series.
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: Changed the course of baseball history. And I read in college,
- 1:15:30Speaker 2: one of my courses at Moody, about Marvin Miller's impact
- 1:15:34Speaker 2: on all of that. This was a book by Matt Futterman,
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: who wrote the book Players. He came on the show
- 1:15:38Speaker 2: when I was filling in during your vacation. We talked tennis.
- 1:15:41Speaker 2: He covers Wimbledon and all the majors with the New
- 1:15:43Speaker 2: York Times.
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: Marvin Miller was a guy who in the 60s was
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: just kind of hanging out around the training camp, spring
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: training sites, and was introducing himself. And a lot of
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: players were like, what? And then he started to discuss
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: with them how unionizing could ultimately help them down the road.
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: And of course, the owners were dead set against it.
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: And labor agreements between the owners and the players have
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: been going on as long as there's been baseball. There
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: was a reason that there was a league called the
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: Players League in the late 1800s and another league called
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: the Federal League in the early 1900s, neither of which survived.
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: But it gave guys an opportunity because of Major League
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: Baseball's reserve clause, which bound you to one team for
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: the entirety of your career unless the team released you.
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: So labor disputes have been going on for more than
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: 100 years. And the biggest of all of them is
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: looming ahead like a storm cloud for 2027. We'll see
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: if that ultimately happens with baseball. The other night, Rob
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: Manfred was on the telecast, ESPN's telecast of the Braves.
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: Brewers game at the little league world series there in Williamsport.
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: And he said, we've, we've had discussions. We're still having
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: kind of regular discussions. They got until December 1st. And
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: if it's, if they don't have at least an agreement
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: kind of in place or an agreement in principle, then
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: the owners pretty much are going to be looking at
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: locking out the players. So that's, you know, the storm
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: clouds on the horizon. All right, we've got other football
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: notes to get to. We are going to hear some
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: more from Arch Manning. We are going to hear some
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: more from Justin Cryer and also from D'Amico Ryans. We'll
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: do that and something you may or may not be
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: happy with with regard to the NFL. That's next. Here's
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: another classic example.
- 1:17:43Speaker 5: Of a band.
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: whose most of their catalog is not Yacht Rock. But
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: this song is. Someone and only grateful dad. And such
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: a great. So that's here on the Yacht Rock Wednesday,
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: bringing you a little bit of variety with that.
- 1:18:05Speaker 2: You know, I've heard this at baseball games. I think
- 1:18:07Speaker 2: I've heard two or three different teams do it across
- 1:18:09Speaker 2: different levels after the home team loses.
- 1:18:14Speaker 8: Oh, okay.
- 1:18:14Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: I think I heard it one time where they just
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: had it queued up to, I will survive, I will
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: get by, and then I will survive. When a guy
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: got hit by a pitch, one of their players. This part, yeah.
- 1:18:27Speaker 2: As long as I don't have to hear Aerosmith after
- 1:18:29Speaker 2: any more walks.
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: Yeah, you get a lot of that. You know, Dodger games,
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: they'll play Dale Boese on missing persons walking in L.A.
- 1:18:40Speaker 2: Oh, on those massive speakers they've got at Dodger Stadium.
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: Are you familiar with that tune?
- 1:18:45Speaker 8: No.
- 1:18:45Speaker 2: Walking in LA? Missing person walking in LA?
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Look that one up. In the meantime,
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: some pro football notes for you. The Pro Bowl is dead.
- 1:18:59Speaker 2: Well, didn't it die five or six years ago?
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: It really did competitively. The player honors will remain.
- 1:19:06Speaker 5: Um.
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: But they're no longer going to acknowledge alternates. So since 1951,
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: the NFL has had the Pro Bowl in some form.
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: All-star competition, you know, went across the country, and particularly
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: in the past decade plus, it's gone through several different iterations,
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: including turning the game itself into a series of games,
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: which I had zero interest in. And now, according to
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: The Athletic, the Pro Bowl is being eliminated. Today, league executives...
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: presented the team owners the future of the Pro Bowl,
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: which will no longer have a standalone game, be it
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: tackle or flag football or games. In other words, no
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: skills competition, any of that. I was never interested in
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: watching any of that, and I didn't. After surveying players
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: over the years, the NFL will now make the Pro
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: Bowl effectively an individual performance award. 88 players will receive
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: the Pro Bowl honor with no alternates. So that's a
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: key aspect of that event that had kind of gotten
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: out of whack, you know, in recent years. Peter O'Reilly,
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: the NFL Executive Vice President of Club Business International League Events,
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: told The Athletic today, and here's the quote, All-Star games,
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: I think, for all leagues have been fraught for a
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: long time, and they haven't necessarily represented the very best
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: premium of that sport for these players. I think all
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: leagues have struggled with that. We made the switch four
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: years ago from the tackle Pro Bowl to a flag game.
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: And that was more strategic for us. In many ways,
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: we saw a decrease in the replacement players. But ultimately,
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: the Pro Bowl, at its core, is about honoring the
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: best of the best in that season on the field
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: in real games. And the shift here is about shifting
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: the focus from the game, which is ultimately where people's
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: attention goes. especially the replacement players who are tied to it,
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: tied to the honor. In place of the games, the
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: Pro Bowlers will be invited to Los Angeles for an
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: in-person celebration in February. The process of selecting Pro Bowlers
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: will remain the same. The ballots cast by fans, players,
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: and coaches are weighted equally to determine the selections of
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: the 88 players on offense, defense, and special teams from
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: across both conferences. For years, league executives informally surveyed the
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: players about how to fix the Pro Bowl. And earlier
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: this summer, the NFL Executive Vice President of Football Operations,
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: Troy Vincent Sr., got on a call with more than
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: a dozen key players like Jalen Hurts, Jalen Ramsey, George Kittle,
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: Deion Dawkins, and others. They made clear they wanted to
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: properly honor and celebrate Pro Bowlers, including those who make
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: the Super Bowl. After years of feeling the honor of
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: had become something less. In fact, Torrey Vincent's quote was,
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: you start doing it over and over again, and now
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: what we've compromised on becomes the standard. And that is
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: not the product the fans deserve, nor the way the
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: players want to be celebrated. And it's a shame, really,
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: because the NFL really started messing with it back around 2013.
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: That was the year they abolished the conference format in
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: favor of honorary team captains. Deion Sanders and Jerry Rice
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: were for the inaugural year. And he had a fantasy draft.
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: They restored the AFC-NFC format for 2016. It moved from
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: Hawaii after the 2015 addition. But the biggest issue, as
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: has been pointed out in this article, has been the
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: lack of competitiveness in the game itself. So, you know,
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: that's why about how that's gone. So in 2022, the
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: league revamped. the pro bowl to bring in skills competitions
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: along with a flag football event that's when i permanently
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: turned it off at that point.
- 1:23:02Speaker 2: You didn't want to watch the your favorite uh rams
- 1:23:05Speaker 2: and nfl stars play dodgeball.
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: Nope was not interested in that and last year they
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: moved it from its typical sunday before the super bowl
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: to the tuesday before the super bowl in the host
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: city um but it didn't go.
- 1:23:19Speaker 2: Over well and then there's the whole you know the
- 1:23:21Speaker 2: opt-outs and and fan voting for replacements and things like
- 1:23:25Speaker 2: that is should or sanders ended up in the pro
- 1:23:27Speaker 2: bowl where there's no measure that should happen yeah i'm
- 1:23:30Speaker 2: not sorry i'm not saying that to disrespect should do
- 1:23:32Speaker 2: or he's not the only one but just a prominent example.
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: Yep yep absolutely so it's gone uh other than being
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: named that but you know i get it and it's
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: an honor and i'm all for it but in That
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: kind of what All-Pro is all about? The All-Pro team?
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: You get named to a team like an All-American team.
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: I guess the difference is All-Pro just has one guy
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: at each position, that sort of thing. This will have
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: its true rosters, even though they don't play in a game. So, anyway,
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: there's that. All right, speaking of the NFL, let's hear
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: from Domingo Ryans.
- 1:24:10Speaker 4: And I.
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: Mentioned earlier in the show how they traded for Keishon Butteh.
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: and how he may be able to help them since
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: the receiving core has taken a hit. And so, Reins
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: was asked about Boutte's addition, you know, really catching his
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: attention with some big catches that he saw on tape.
- 1:24:31Speaker 9: Adding Kayshaun is not about the one play. We know
- 1:24:34Speaker 9: it was a spectacular play that he made, but it's
- 1:24:37Speaker 9: just watching him throughout his career, just seeing what he's done.
- 1:24:41Speaker 9: He's one of the better contested catch players that I've seen.
- 1:24:45Speaker 9: If the ball is close, he has a knack for
- 1:24:46Speaker 9: going up, playing physical, and coming down with the football.
- 1:24:49Speaker 9: So that's what intrigued me when I continued to watch
- 1:24:52Speaker 9: his tape from last year and previous years. He continued
- 1:24:55Speaker 9: to make those tough catches, and that's what you want.
- 1:24:59Speaker 9: I want everybody on our team to be tough mentally
- 1:25:01Speaker 9: and physically, and he's shown that on his tape.
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: Okay, but since they just brought him in, how's he
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: going to be able to ramp up quickly enough?
- 1:25:07Speaker 9: For us to ramp him up, we'll start with our
- 1:25:11Speaker 9: S & C group. They'll start him on the side,
- 1:25:13Speaker 9: just ramping him up, making sure we like to understand
- 1:25:15Speaker 9: our player's body, understand where they are. We go through
- 1:25:17Speaker 9: some preliminary testing to make sure he's ready to go
- 1:25:22Speaker 9: when it's time to get in. He got in today,
- 1:25:24Speaker 9: did individual, did some routes on air, and we'll continue
- 1:25:26Speaker 9: to build him.
- 1:25:27Speaker 8: And progress him. you know, as the week goes along.
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: Last hour, we heard D'Amico Ryans talk about the offensive
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: line and how it needs to get better, and he
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: likes what he's seen so far. He's been impressed, but
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: also wanting the depth behind the starters to be able
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: to go well, and that's where... Blake Fisher's improvement comes in.
- 1:25:44Speaker 9: For Blake, I've seen definitely a focused guy.
- 1:25:48Speaker 8: He's improved a ton.
- 1:25:50Speaker 9: If I gave out awards, he would get the award
- 1:25:52Speaker 9: for the most improved offensive lineman this year. From what
- 1:25:55Speaker 9: he did last year, from being in that jumbo-type role,
- 1:25:59Speaker 9: he's just lined up at left tackle. Every day, he's
- 1:26:02Speaker 9: gotten better. Every single day. I'm really pleased with Blake.
- 1:26:06Speaker 9: I'm proud of the work that he's put in. He's
- 1:26:08Speaker 9: shown up daily.
- 1:26:09Speaker 8: He's improved.
- 1:26:10Speaker 9: He's taken the coaching really well. And that's what it
- 1:26:12Speaker 9: looks like. When you put the work in, you can
- 1:26:14Speaker 9: get better. And Blake has shown that tremendously.
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: One more from D'Amico Rines about the wide receiver room again.
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: And Xavier Hutchinson, the former Iowa State Cyclone, and the
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: excitement that he has generated.
- 1:26:26Speaker 8: Starting with Hutch, man, it's his attitude. I love it.
- 1:26:28Speaker 9: He has an infectious energy. Every time he steps on
- 1:26:32Speaker 9: the field, he has this joy about him. He plays
- 1:26:35Speaker 9: hard every single snap, and he makes plays. The ball
- 1:26:38Speaker 9: comes his way. He finds a way to make plays,
- 1:26:41Speaker 9: and so it's exciting about Hutch. I'll never have a
- 1:26:43Speaker 9: bad day. Always great attitude. He works the right way.
- 1:26:46Speaker 9: He works hard at his craft, and he has a
- 1:26:49Speaker 9: confidence in himself, which you have.
- 1:26:51Speaker 8: To have at the right receiver position.
- 1:26:53Speaker 9: Hutch has that confidence, and he's playing confident and showing
- 1:26:56Speaker 9: up every day.
- 1:26:58Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: Texans, of course, wrap up their preseason. this week as
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: they take on the Carolina Panthers. Let's hear a little
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: more from Arch Manning. And Arch, you know, yesterday was
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: talking about, you know, how much fun it's been in
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: camp and how he and his teammates have really done
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: a good job. And he was asked about the running backs.
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: He talked about a little more about Hollywood Smothers and
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: also Relique Brown, you know, Smothers transferring in from NC State,
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: Brown from Arizona State. What about their attributes and what
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: they bring to the party?
- 1:27:31Speaker 5: Well, they can both. They're both so good out of
- 1:27:33Speaker 5: the backfield, smart, consistent, and just can make highlight-level plays
- 1:27:38Speaker 5: at any time.
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: Okay. He was also asked about game day in Austin
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: because this week, remember, they finished up the two scrimmages,
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: and they're going through regular practice this week. This is
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: the final week of fall camp, training camp workouts. When
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: they get to Saturday, however, they will have what's called
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: a mock game, and that's where they go through the
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: timeline and sequence of events that they would on a
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: game day, because this Saturday, there'll be one week from
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: the season opener. And so they'll go through all those things,
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: including staying at the hotel the night before getting up,
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: having the team breakfast, going through the warmups, all of
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: those kinds of things, and then an actual kickoff, and
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: that's the mock game as it works up. So Arch
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: was asked about the game day environment and what's his
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: favorite part of game day in Austin? Just, you only
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: get so many in Austin.
- 1:28:38Speaker 5: You only get what?
- 1:28:39Speaker 8: Five.
- 1:28:40Speaker 5: Six a year um it's special and playing at home
- 1:28:43Speaker 5: is always fun um i'm excited to be.
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: Back it would actually be seven this year uh they've
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: got seven home games this year so uh that's that's
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: a good thing all right next uh he was asked
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: about uh getting cole hudson back on the offensive front
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: of what he what that means Crazy.
- 1:29:00Speaker 5: I was off social media, so I didn't know what
- 1:29:01Speaker 5: was going on, really. And I just saw him early
- 1:29:04Speaker 5: morning one day. I was like, what the hell? But
- 1:29:06Speaker 5: he gave a big hug, and I'm glad to have
- 1:29:09Speaker 5: him back.
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: Anytime you have familiar faces.
- 1:29:12Speaker 5: It's fun.
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:29:13Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: Next, Arch, historically, since he's been on campus, customarily, tries
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: to stay off social media. So he's asking, does he
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: plan to be off social media all year long?
- 1:29:28Speaker 5: That's the plan. I like being in the know a
- 1:29:30Speaker 5: little bit, like with my hometown friends and people I've met,
- 1:29:33Speaker 5: but yeah, no, anything football related. I click not interested.
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: Okay. Uh, I was asked if he gives Marshall Manning
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: any advice to Marshall.
- 1:29:42Speaker 5: I texted him the other night. Um, but he's, uh,
- 1:29:46Speaker 5: he's a really good guy. He's really smart. He was
- 1:29:48Speaker 5: studying for some big time class that I never took. Um,
- 1:29:53Speaker 5: But he's a really good guy. I wish him all
- 1:29:54Speaker 5: the best. I'm a cousin first before I'm giving him
- 1:29:58Speaker 5: much advice. He's got a lot of advice from his dad.
- 1:30:00Speaker 5: So I can just be the fun cousin.
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely. Marshall being Peyton's son after that. He was
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: asked if he visits with his grandfather, if he visits
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: with Archie, his namesake, that often.
- 1:30:16Speaker 5: Yeah, 100%. He texts me just about every day. So
- 1:30:20Speaker 5: he's just a great guy. Keeps up with everyone. And
- 1:30:24Speaker 5: I'm glad we have such a good relationship.
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: Okay, it would not be an interview session without questions
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: from our good friend Kirk Bowles about weight. He loves
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: to get those exact specs down. He writes them down
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: on his big legal pad and all this. And so
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: he had an exchange with Arch about Arch having a
- 1:30:41Speaker 1: little bit of weight change, going from being a little
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: bit bigger to being a little more cut this summer.
- 1:30:45Speaker 5: During spring, I wasn't running much. So I got up
- 1:30:47Speaker 5: to like 236. Yeah, I was a little chubby. um
- 1:30:53Speaker 5: now i'm uh now i'm like 220 so coach beckton
- 1:30:57Speaker 5: he ran us pretty good this summer i shredded i
- 1:31:00Speaker 5: shut off.
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: Some weight okay all right um i asked arch about
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: when we were at sec media days about playing golf
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: with his dad and in those commercials and i asked
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: him who was the better golfer and he said my
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: dad is i can hit it farther than him but
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: he hits it a lot straighter than i do that
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: was in our conversation So he was asked, how's his
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: golf game going? Up and down, up and down.
- 1:31:23Speaker 5: After I said I broke 80, I went and played and, like,
- 1:31:26Speaker 5: topped the first three shots.
- 1:31:28Speaker 8: Everyone's like, what?
- 1:31:29Speaker 5: No, you did not. You didn't break 80. But, yeah.
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:31:34Speaker 8: All right.
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: Does he have a standout off-field memory about the summer?
- 1:31:40Speaker 5: That's a good question. We had a team get together
- 1:31:45Speaker 5: on a Friday night. And it was good being around
- 1:31:47Speaker 5: the guys outside of football. It wasn't organized or anything,
- 1:31:50Speaker 5: just from the players. And it was a really good time.
- 1:31:53Speaker 5: And just being around the guys, talking about life was.
- 1:31:57Speaker 5: It was a memory that you'll remember for the rest
- 1:31:59Speaker 5: of your life.
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: No doubt about it. All right, we're going to hear
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: a little bit more coming up. We've talked quite a
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: bit about the offensive side of it, but we're going
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: to hear a little bit more from Justin Cryer coming
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: up when we continue here on the Yacht Rock Wednesday
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: on Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone. My soul's
- 1:32:15Speaker 1: like a wheel that's turning.
- 1:32:18Speaker 4: My love is alive.
- 1:32:23Speaker 7: My love is alive.
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: Rolling through a Yacht Rock Wednesday here with the late
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: Gary Wright, whose love was definitely alive when he was
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: with us on this planet. Hey, I wanted, there was
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: a couple other pieces of sound I wanted you to
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: hear from Arch Manning. First of all, I want to
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: go back to that trash talk thing. There's a, you know,
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: there was a lot of conversation with Longhorn players saying
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: that Arch is one of the best at trash talk.
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: And this popped up two or three times. And finally,
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: Arch winds up in an exchange with John Bianco, the
- 1:33:03Speaker 1: senior associate athletic director for communications, and was asking, what's
- 1:33:09Speaker 1: going on with all this trash talk stuff?
- 1:33:10Speaker 5: Is something trash talk happening? Everybody talks about your trash talk.
- 1:33:15Speaker 5: Really not that much of a trash talker. What's going on? Really?
- 1:33:22Speaker 5: He's a trash talker.
- 1:33:23Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:33:26Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 1:33:27Speaker 5: Damn i'm missing out i don't know i'm really just
- 1:33:30Speaker 5: a nice guy out there.
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: Not so much about the trash talk although justin cry
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: would say otherwise by the way uh one other thing
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: you knew this had to come and again this was
- 1:33:41Speaker 1: a kirk bowles question wasn't it asked him you know
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: the manning award supposedly goes to the nation's best quarterback
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: named after his grandfather aren't you manny and uh Arch
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: was named to the Manning Award watch list yesterday or Monday.
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: So he was asked, do you want to win the
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: Manning Award?
- 1:34:03Speaker 4: Uh, nah.
- 1:34:05Speaker 5: Nah, nah, hell no.
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: Nah, that's not my goal for this season. That was
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: mainly what he was saying. It's not my goal. Somebody asked,
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: is your goal to win the Manning Award? And he said, uh, no.
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: All right, a little more from Justin Cryer, the Longhorn linebacker.
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: If the name Cryer sounds familiar, it should. Brother LJ Cryer,
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: the former standout basketball guard at Baylor University, LJ. And
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: he was asked what he has learned about LJ, who
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: was on Baylor's 2021 National Championship team when it comes
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: to chasing championships.
- 1:34:41Speaker 11: Yeah, y'all don't know this. I'm actually better at basketball
- 1:34:43Speaker 11: than him. I think that's just me personally.
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: Does he know that?
- 1:34:49Speaker 5: Oh, absolutely.
- 1:34:50Speaker 1: He knows that.
- 1:34:51Speaker 4: No, um.
- 1:34:52Speaker 11: He's been my role model ever since I was a
- 1:34:53Speaker 11: little kid. His work ethic, his drive, his determination. I
- 1:34:58Speaker 11: got to have a first. I got to have a
- 1:35:01Speaker 11: front row seat to that. Coming up to recruit, coming
- 1:35:04Speaker 11: up to games at the University of Texas, all this stuff,
- 1:35:07Speaker 11: the process that he went through, it was something that
- 1:35:10Speaker 11: kind of laid down the blueprint for me when it
- 1:35:12Speaker 11: was my turn. He's someone I go to all the
- 1:35:15Speaker 11: time just for advice and just for whenever things are
- 1:35:17Speaker 11: just kind of going on, I go to him first
- 1:35:20Speaker 11: because he's someone who I know has been through it.
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: And he's up on me in the national championship category.
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: So I got to get one.
- 1:35:26Speaker 5: Up on him.
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: All right. So here is some stuff from Justin Cryer
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: as well. We'll be back to wrap up today's edition
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: of the program here on 13 Under the Zone.
