- 4:19Speaker 2: morning mindset on this Friday. And yes, it'll probably have
- 4:24Speaker 2: something to do with the lyrics to an eighties or
- 4:26Speaker 2: nineties song that you'll be able to hear all week
- 4:28Speaker 2: and long. Here on ninety seven point one WASHCHFM, hang
- 4:31Speaker 2: out your morning mindset on the way in minutes ninety
- 4:35Speaker 2: seven point one wash chefm is where you find Washington's
- 4:38Speaker 2: variety of the eighties nineties that today Toby and Chilly
- 4:42Speaker 2: in the Morning, and it's time for us to take
- 4:43Speaker 2: a moment to talk about you and what you're going
- 4:47Speaker 2: through today.
- 4:48Speaker 3: We want to share a quote to get you into
- 4:50Speaker 3: a better morning mindset. And as Toby mentioned a few
- 4:53Speaker 3: minutes ago, because it is Friday, and that's when we
- 4:56Speaker 3: kick off our best of the eighties and nineties weekend.
- 4:58Speaker 4: Which decade are you focusing on?
- 5:00Speaker 2: Nineteen eighty five, so the eighties specifically nineteen eighty five.
- 5:05Speaker 2: The song is from the artist Heart the Banded Heart.
- 5:08Speaker 2: These Dreams is the song and the lyric that we
- 5:12Speaker 2: should keep in mind today is These dreams go on
- 5:14Speaker 2: when I close my eyes. Now, think about it. These
- 5:18Speaker 2: dreams go on when I close my eyes. Think about
- 5:22Speaker 2: your dreams. Your dreams don't expire just because life gets busy.
- 5:27Speaker 2: You know there's still your dreams. There is no expiration
- 5:31Speaker 2: data on them. So go ahead, take a rest, take
- 5:33Speaker 2: a breather. Life does get busy, but know that your
- 5:36Speaker 2: dreams are still there and they're yours. Keep that in
- 5:39Speaker 2: mind as you listen to this best of the eighties
- 5:42Speaker 2: and nineties weekend. It starts today at five here on
- 5:44Speaker 2: ninety seven point one. Watch them, and hopefully your morning
- 5:48Speaker 2: mindset will help you today to get through whatever it
- 5:52Speaker 2: is you're facing. Remember your dreams, all right? Coming up
- 5:55Speaker 2: in just minutes. What'sobe and Chilly in the morning.
- 5:57Speaker 3: My son wants to shake things up a bit with
- 6:00Speaker 3: our dinner time routine.
- 6:02Speaker 4: Oh boy, and I'm not loving his idea.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Why.
- 6:06Speaker 4: I'll tell you why. Coming up in just a few Toby.
- 6:08Speaker 2: And Chilly in the morning on ninety seven point one
- 6:11Speaker 2: watch FM. You almost gave it away. You said routine.
- 6:14Speaker 2: That means something that will take you out of the routine. Chilly,
- 6:17Speaker 2: What does your son want you? Guys in your family
- 6:20Speaker 2: to do well.
- 6:21Speaker 3: Typically, we all have dinner together and that's not a
- 6:24Speaker 3: rule in the house, and we have our own seats,
- 6:28Speaker 3: like no one assigned the seats to us, but we
- 6:30Speaker 3: sort of sit in the same seats every single night.
- 6:33Speaker 3: And that's how it was when I was growing up,
- 6:35Speaker 3: and that's how it was when my husband was growing up.
- 6:37Speaker 3: And Dinado, my twelve year old, is like, Mom, why
- 6:40Speaker 3: don't we just start rotating our seats and just change
- 6:43Speaker 3: it up a bit?
- 6:43Speaker 4: Why not?
- 6:44Speaker 2: That's actually a really good idea because complacency is no bueno.
- 6:48Speaker 3: But the position that I sit in it has a
- 6:51Speaker 3: function to it, Like there's a reason I sit at
- 6:53Speaker 3: the side of the table I sit at. I have
- 6:54Speaker 3: better access to the stovever the fridge or whatever. And
- 6:58Speaker 3: I'm always getting up and like grab things or you know,
- 7:00Speaker 3: the last one to sit down because I'm serving everybody else.
- 7:03Speaker 4: I know it's traditional, but whatever's.
- 7:06Speaker 3: And you know, my husband sits where he sits so
- 7:08Speaker 3: that he can face me because we want to be
- 7:10Speaker 3: able to look at each other when we're talking. But
- 7:12Speaker 3: this is something that I feel like a lot of
- 7:14Speaker 3: us experienced even growing up.
- 7:17Speaker 4: Didn't you always sit in the same with your brothers
- 7:19Speaker 4: and sisters and mom and dad.
- 7:21Speaker 2: May I had three brothers, my mom had to manage
- 7:24Speaker 2: four boys. I think the last thing mom was thinking
- 7:26Speaker 2: about was where we sat around.
- 7:28Speaker 4: Them to naturally pick the same seat.
- 7:31Speaker 2: No, no, no, I don't even you know, And I've
- 7:34Speaker 2: been racking my brain about this. I don't recall having
- 7:39Speaker 2: specific seats. And the table was round, so anywhere you
- 7:43Speaker 2: sat was a decent table, yeah, or seated right.
- 7:47Speaker 3: I did an informal survey because I was curious whether
- 7:50Speaker 3: I was in the minority and kind of doing that,
- 7:52Speaker 3: and every single person, I mean I only talk to
- 7:54Speaker 3: like twenty people. It's not like I asked hundreds, but
- 7:57Speaker 3: all twenty ish people said, yeah, they all have sort
- 8:00Speaker 3: of this unspoken seat that they've sit in every single night.
- 8:05Speaker 3: But I am willing to try it because I get
- 8:09Speaker 3: where he's coming from, my son, And I'll tell you,
- 8:11Speaker 3: if I feel discombobulated, we're going right back to the
- 8:14Speaker 3: original plan.
- 8:15Speaker 2: Yeah, but what if he feels discombobbia, then he can move.
- 8:18Speaker 2: I don't care where he's Well, what if he wants
- 8:20Speaker 2: to sit where you're sitting.
- 8:21Speaker 4: Well, no, it ain't gonna happen. Okay, it'll happen once.
- 8:24Speaker 2: Oh, I see how it.
- 8:27Speaker 3: Is interesting, Unless, of course, it means he eats his veggies.
- 8:31Speaker 2: Then that's fine, right, because if a kid will eat
- 8:34Speaker 2: the veggies, you'll sit wherever, even if that means in
- 8:38Speaker 2: the living room. Toby and Chilly in the morning on
- 8:40Speaker 2: ninety seven point one wash FM, got the news on
- 8:43Speaker 2: the Waytop Stories at the top of the hour. Give
- 8:45Speaker 2: us a preview there, Chilia Mark.
- 8:47Speaker 3: A new survey shows there's one room in the house
- 8:50Speaker 3: that is fueling a surprising number of arguments between couples.
- 8:54Speaker 3: You're gonna find out which room that is and why.
- 8:57Speaker 3: Coming up in just a few right around.
- 9:00Speaker 2: After Top Stories at the top of the hour, make
- 9:03Speaker 2: sure you're listening to ninety seven point one WASHFM because
- 9:06Speaker 2: we know you are a fan of live music.

- 9:22Speaker 6: Coming up on Top Stories Top of the hour.
- 9:24Speaker 3: A new Senate resolution could change what lawmakers get paid
- 9:28Speaker 3: the next time the government shuts down.
- 9:31Speaker 4: We've got more on that story and others.
- 9:33Speaker 3: On the way with Toby and Chile in the morning,
- 9:35Speaker 3: a ninety seven point one wash FM.
- 9:40Speaker 6: Top Stories Top of the Hour.
- 9:42Speaker 3: The President is flying back to the US after a
- 9:45Speaker 3: high stake summit with Chinese President She two leaders discuss
- 9:49Speaker 3: the ongoing war in Iran, among other topics, with China
- 9:52Speaker 3: considered Iran's largest trading partner. The Senate has unanimously approved
- 9:57Speaker 3: a resolution that would withhold senators paid during future government
- 10:02Speaker 3: shutdowns now. The measure, which will take effect after the
- 10:05Speaker 3: midterm elections, targets lawmakers who currently earn at least one
- 10:09Speaker 3: hundred and seventy four thousand dollars a year. The Montgomery
- 10:12Speaker 3: County Council facing criticism after abruptly postponing a meeting yesterday
- 10:17Speaker 3: where educators had gathered to question proposed budget cuts tied
- 10:21Speaker 3: to a one hundred and fifty million dollar deficit. The
- 10:24Speaker 3: delays come as the county considers broad spending reductions, including
- 10:28Speaker 3: potential cuts to education funding and school staff. A new
- 10:32Speaker 3: community park has opened at Skyland Town Center Community Park
- 10:36Speaker 3: in southeast d C. The nearly one acre park includes
- 10:40Speaker 3: a playground, seating areas, and a plaza designed to bring
- 10:44Speaker 3: more green space and gathering areas. Towards seven, the Washington
- 10:48Speaker 3: Commanders released their full seventeen games slate for the twenty
- 10:52Speaker 3: twenty sixth season, which includes a nationally televised season opener
- 10:57Speaker 3: with Philadelphia and then their first home game will come
- 11:01Speaker 3: in Week three against the Seattle Seahawks on September twenty seventh,
- 11:05Speaker 3: making it the franchise's latest home opener. And finally, a
- 11:09Speaker 3: new survey finds the kitchen is one of the biggest
- 11:12Speaker 3: sources of relationship arguments, with leaving messes behind topping the
- 11:17Speaker 3: list of complaints. The poll found that eighty percent of
- 11:20Speaker 3: couples half fought while they were cooking, with poor hygiene
- 11:24Speaker 3: and different cleanliness standards among the biggest frustrations. Forecast for
- 11:29Speaker 3: today partly cloudy skies, highs around seventy two right now
- 11:33Speaker 3: fifty three in Alexandria.
- 11:34Speaker 2: That's the news, top stories at the top of the hour.
- 11:37Speaker 2: That's what you get here at ninety seven point one.
- 11:39Speaker 2: Watch you FM the news that's really important to you
- 11:42Speaker 2: as you get your day started. How do you feel
- 11:44Speaker 2: about sleepovers? Kylie Kelsey was in People magazine recently talking
- 11:49Speaker 2: about why she will not let her daughters have sleepovers. Why,
- 11:54Speaker 2: We'll tell you coming up. And we want to get
- 11:56Speaker 2: your take on sleepovers too, so think about that in
- 11:59Speaker 2: the meantime. If you want to see Jason Derulo at
- 12:02Speaker 2: the film More, be caller ten now eight six six
- 12:05Speaker 2: nine two seven forty three sixty one. Eight six six
- 12:08Speaker 2: nine two seven forty three sixty one call now tickets
- 12:12Speaker 2: to see Jason Derulo. Yours parents got a question for you,
- 12:16Speaker 2: Toby and Chilly in the morning. It's ninety seven point
- 12:18Speaker 2: one wash at them sleepovers? How do you feel about
- 12:22Speaker 2: sleepovers these days? Eight six six ninety two, seven forty
- 12:25Speaker 2: three sixty one is the number. You can also tap
- 12:28Speaker 2: the talk back microphone if you have an opinion, and
- 12:30Speaker 2: I'm sure you probably do. Are you down with them
- 12:33Speaker 2: or not? And we bring this up this morning because
- 12:36Speaker 2: on her podcast, somebody asked Kylie Kelsey about being a
- 12:40Speaker 2: girl mom and how she felt about having her girls
- 12:43Speaker 2: go and sleep over at somebody else's house. Here's what
- 12:46Speaker 2: she had to say.
- 12:47Speaker 6: No, we live in a different world than when we
- 12:49Speaker 6: were growing up.
- 12:50Speaker 4: No, my kids are not going for sleepovers.
- 12:52Speaker 6: I have trust issues, Okay.
- 12:54Speaker 3: Now, Kylie goes on to say that She says she
- 12:57Speaker 3: would be fine with picking up her girls at the
- 13:00Speaker 3: time and taking them back in the morning to the
- 13:03Speaker 3: sleepover house if they're having some morning breakfast or activities,
- 13:06Speaker 3: which made me laugh because that's what my parents proposed
- 13:10Speaker 3: I do when I was invited to my first sleepover,
- 13:14Speaker 3: and it was really embarrassing being the only kid who
- 13:16Speaker 3: got picked up at night.
- 13:18Speaker 2: Well were you yeah.
- 13:20Speaker 3: Yeah, when you were growing up, First of all, did
- 13:22Speaker 3: you do sleepovers? And second of all, as a girl
- 13:25Speaker 3: dad yourself, did you allow your daughter to sleep over
- 13:28Speaker 3: at someone's house?
- 13:29Speaker 2: Yes, I had many sleepovers when I was growing up.
- 13:33Speaker 2: I say many, I don't recall exactly how many. And
- 13:36Speaker 2: as a girl dad, yeah, I didn't mind Kyla going
- 13:39Speaker 2: to spend the night with her girlfriends and whatnot because
- 13:42Speaker 2: they were friends and I knew their parents. I made
- 13:45Speaker 2: it a point to know both of the parents, mom
- 13:47Speaker 2: and dad, before I was cool with then signed off
- 13:49Speaker 2: on it. Sure, my task was to make sure that
- 13:52Speaker 2: I was good to go the next morning to go
- 13:54Speaker 2: pick her up, and sometimes that didn't always happen because
- 13:58Speaker 2: I was you know, for whatever reason.
- 13:59Speaker 3: Look, I think that dark things happened even back in
- 14:03Speaker 3: the day when you were kids. They just didn't come
- 14:05Speaker 3: to light until when we grew up. So I think
- 14:08Speaker 3: we're way more aware of some of the nefarious things
- 14:12Speaker 3: that can occur and things that happen behind closed doors.
- 14:15Speaker 3: So very protective over that. So I totally get where
- 14:18Speaker 3: she's coming from. And I don't know how comfortable I
- 14:20Speaker 3: would feel having my son sleep over at someone's house. Now,
- 14:23Speaker 3: when he becomes older and is a teenager, well that's
- 14:27Speaker 3: gonna be different.
- 14:28Speaker 4: But for now, Nah, he's sleeping in his own bed.
- 14:30Speaker 2: Well, you know what they say, train up the child
- 14:32Speaker 2: and the way they should go, and when they get
- 14:34Speaker 2: to college, they're gonna throw all of those things you
- 14:36Speaker 2: force down upon the mount. Okay, when when little rond
- 14:40Speaker 2: is spending the night with little Donado in Donado's dorm room, Oh,
- 14:44Speaker 2: I'm sorry, Mom, is that making you uncomfortable?
- 14:46Speaker 4: That's a totally different type of sleepover?
- 14:49Speaker 2: Eight sixty six, seven forty three sixty one sleepovers thoughts
- 14:53Speaker 2: call us? Now, what do you think we'll talk about it?
- 14:56Speaker 2: Next to me at Chilly in the morning. On ninety
- 14:58Speaker 2: seven point one wascheff I'm the very beautiful and talented
- 15:01Speaker 2: Kylie Kelsey as a podcast, and she made some news
- 15:04Speaker 2: this week, People Magazine picked it up and ran with it,
- 15:07Speaker 2: and now everybody's talking about sleepovers. Yeah, Kylie Kelcey not
- 15:11Speaker 2: a fan. She's a girl mom.
- 15:13Speaker 3: She straight up admits she has trust issues right, she
- 15:16Speaker 3: doesn't trust other people around her kids. And so we
- 15:19Speaker 3: wanted to know what your thoughts were on the sleepover?
- 15:23Speaker 3: Do you let your kids have them?
- 15:25Speaker 2: Eight six, six, nine, two, seven, forty three sixty one
- 15:28Speaker 2: is the number if you want to jump in Good
- 15:30Speaker 2: morning in Silver Spring, Megan sleepovers thoughts.
- 15:33Speaker 5: I'm for it, but with very careful parenting.
- 15:37Speaker 4: What do you mean by that?
- 15:38Speaker 5: I think the parents should definitely be aware of where
- 15:40Speaker 5: their kids are going, get in touch with the other parents, communicate,
- 15:44Speaker 5: and then they know what's happening.
- 15:46Speaker 2: And I think, Megan, thank you so much for jumping
- 15:49Speaker 2: in this morning. Let's shoot over to chantilly Ka Kylie Kelsey.
- 15:53Speaker 2: She says, no toe sleepovers. Where do you stand? And
- 15:56Speaker 2: what do you think about what she had to say?
- 15:58Speaker 6: I disagree because they can come over to your house.
- 16:00Speaker 4: You don't have to so much.
- 16:01Speaker 6: Send them over to their friend's house because you're not
- 16:03Speaker 6: sure what's going on there.
- 16:04Speaker 7: But the kids need to be social, so I disagree,
- 16:07Speaker 7: and I think that it's great to have somebody in there.
- 16:09Speaker 4: You know, have their own friend in their own space.
- 16:11Speaker 3: I agree with you, k I think if we're going
- 16:13Speaker 3: to do sleepovers, we're hosting.
- 16:15Speaker 4: Okay, that's an option.
- 16:16Speaker 2: Too, great stuff. Kay, thank you now, Vanessa and Manassas,
- 16:20Speaker 2: I understand you. Agree with Kylie Kelsey.
- 16:23Speaker 7: I think they're a bad idea because you never know

- 23:13Speaker 2: Irma Garcia, she carried around this dream that she never
- 23:17Speaker 2: quite let go. And tomorrow, at seventy two, this grandmother
- 23:22Speaker 2: of five is going to walk across the graduation stage
- 23:25Speaker 2: over at George Mason University where she's going to grab
- 23:29Speaker 2: her bachelor's degree in public administration.
- 23:32Speaker 4: This is so amazing.
- 23:33Speaker 3: Irma came to the US from Puerto Rico back in
- 23:35Speaker 3: nineteen seventy eight. She was a single mom with three
- 23:38Speaker 3: daughters and they were all under the age of three.
- 23:40Speaker 3: But she was determined to build a better life through education,

- 23:46Speaker 3: Northern Virginia Community College and her nights getting salad bars
- 23:50Speaker 3: ready at Wendy's while raising her girls and taking classes

- 23:57Speaker 3: make life joyful for her kids.
- 23:59Speaker 2: Education was so important and her family. She passed that
- 24:03Speaker 2: passion on to her daughters. They all went on to
- 24:06Speaker 2: careers in law, government, and tech. And now years later,
- 24:09Speaker 2: it was her college educated grandkids who helped her to
- 24:12Speaker 2: navigate online coursework and technology so she could finally finish
- 24:17Speaker 2: the degree she started on decades ago.
- 24:20Speaker 3: Five years ago, Irma enrolled at Mason's Shar School of
- 24:24Speaker 3: Policy and Government, often sitting in classrooms that were filled
- 24:27Speaker 3: with students the same age as her grandchildren. Well, now,
- 24:31Speaker 3: after a lifetime of sacrifice, hard work, and perseverance, Irma
- 24:35Speaker 3: is proving the American dream is still possible, even if
- 24:39Speaker 3: it takes a little longer than expected.
- 24:41Speaker 2: Now, that story might make you feel good, but for some,
