- 0:07Speaker 2: The insider I've covered while Chef Legwald too cute.
- 0:11Speaker 3: Let's dial down the queue and just play football.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Brought to you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Start with a job and with a career IVDW Local
- 0:21Speaker 1: sixty eight. It's Leggy, Yeah, yeah, yeah on Altitude Sports
- 0:26Speaker 1: Radio five. Let's do it. Let's dive right into some
- 0:35Speaker 1: Broncos conversation. Our buddy Jeff Legwald with us right now
- 0:38Speaker 1: here on a Monday, freshly back from the Senior Bowl.
- 0:43Speaker 1: And uh no, that is not a AARP sponsored bowling event. Leggy,
- 0:48Speaker 1: how you doing, man?
- 0:50Speaker 2: I'm good? How you got?
- 0:51Speaker 1: We're doing? Okay? Leggy? Uh I got I got my
- 0:53Speaker 1: my two round mock draft here today from your buddy
- 0:56Speaker 1: Matt Miller over there at ESPN. And he's he's got
- 1:00Speaker 1: Denver going tight end Ty Warren gonna be gone by
- 1:03Speaker 1: the time Denver is up at twenty. He likes Colston
- 1:06Speaker 1: Loveland out of Michigan. Now, clearly I can think of
- 1:10Speaker 1: one front range community that would love to have him
- 1:13Speaker 1: on the Broncos. But tell me why Colston Loveland could
- 1:17Speaker 1: be a good fit here in Denver.
- 1:20Speaker 3: Well, you know, he's he's like Warren and that you
- 1:22Speaker 3: can put him all over the formation.
- 1:24Speaker 2: He just can't.
- 1:25Speaker 3: I don't think he's quite the runner with the pure
- 1:28Speaker 3: runner with the ball in his hands. And obviously he
- 1:30Speaker 3: doesn't have the history of quarterback that Warren has that
- 1:34Speaker 3: makes him so unique. But they are the two tight
- 1:38Speaker 3: ends worthy, you know. Well, they both have true first
- 1:42Speaker 3: round grades. I can't say that for every team, but
- 1:44Speaker 3: they are. They're the two guys who are worthy of
- 1:47Speaker 3: that early pick. And like we've talked, you know, I
- 1:52Speaker 3: think Matt had him going tight end running back, and
- 1:55Speaker 3: I think that's an awfully likely scenario for them if
- 2:01Speaker 3: the board falls any you know, any way toward that direction.
- 2:06Speaker 3: You know, I think those are the you know or
- 2:10Speaker 3: tight end, the best joker player on the board, you know,
- 2:13Speaker 3: and Peyton's offense type thing. So yeah, you know, again,
- 2:19Speaker 3: he's worth that pick. You can put him all over
- 2:21Speaker 3: the place. He's probably a little.
- 2:22Speaker 4: Hold on, hold on, hold on, you're giving me flashbacks, League.
- 2:25Speaker 4: We're having flashbacks. Andy Lindall and Jeff Legwall trying to
- 2:28Speaker 4: do a twenty nineteen draft when Noah Fant is all
- 2:31Speaker 4: of a sudden the Broncos pick and number twenty or
- 2:34Speaker 4: whatever it was.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Right, Yeah, well he's.
- 2:37Speaker 4: The second best tight end on the board. Now, he's
- 2:39Speaker 4: not as good as Hockenstein or Hockenstein or whoever the
- 2:42Speaker 4: hell the other tight end was, but he's gonna be
- 2:44Speaker 4: just fine here and Noe he wasn't fine.
- 2:48Speaker 2: So is this a legit?
- 2:49Speaker 4: Yeah, he's the number two or are we looking at
- 2:52Speaker 4: number and no A Fant again?
- 2:55Speaker 3: But you know, and I'll just tell you a lot
- 2:57Speaker 3: of GM's in the league. Tight ends one of those
- 3:00Speaker 3: weird positions where you know the value, what's the value?
- 3:04Speaker 2: You know? Where do you where do you put positional value?
- 3:07Speaker 3: Are you know, are you getting a truly unique player
- 3:12Speaker 3: that's immediate impact in your offense?
- 3:15Speaker 2: You know, I think Bowers is such a unique case.
- 3:19Speaker 3: It would be very dangerous for people to to sort
- 3:22Speaker 3: of say, oh, yeah, the Raiders got them in the
- 3:24Speaker 3: middle of the round and it's you know, that's perfect,
- 3:27Speaker 3: that's the way to do not so he was probably
- 3:30Speaker 3: a top five player on everybody's board. You know, I
- 3:34Speaker 3: don't think either of the tight ends will be quite
- 3:37Speaker 3: that level, though, I believe worn is close just because
- 3:42Speaker 3: of the versatility. But that's always the question tight end guard,
- 3:47Speaker 3: you know, those those positions. Do you use a first
- 3:51Speaker 3: round pick? Are you putting need above best player available?
- 3:56Speaker 2: So to speak?
- 3:57Speaker 3: But you know, again, I think they got enough where
- 4:00Speaker 3: they wouldn't have to just jam a fit in there.
- 4:05Speaker 3: And you know, if they get the right running back,
- 4:08Speaker 3: getting a tight end isn't such a big issue. You know,
- 4:12Speaker 3: if you can add the screen game and the wheel
- 4:15Speaker 3: routes and the stuff down the hash. You know, with
- 4:18Speaker 3: a running back, who's to say that's not just as
- 4:21Speaker 3: good as getting a tight end?
- 4:23Speaker 1: Yeah? And running back tight end interior lineman like you're
- 4:26Speaker 1: you're right, it's you. You you butt up against positional
- 4:30Speaker 1: value and what you should do in a first round
- 4:32Speaker 1: pick right there. It's interesting Matt Miller Actually he had
- 4:36Speaker 1: Genty going to the Chargers after denver Ley. When when
- 4:40Speaker 1: you're talking to people about Ashton Genty right now, what
- 4:45Speaker 1: is the range where you could see the potential of
- 4:48Speaker 1: him going in this draft?
- 4:51Speaker 2: Uh?
- 4:52Speaker 3: You know, as a he's the best back on the board.
- 4:55Speaker 3: You know, what makes him unique is a very big
- 4:58Speaker 3: metric for a lot of teams, is is you know,
- 5:02Speaker 3: broken tackles, you know, yardage after contact, all of those things.
- 5:10Speaker 3: But you add in his ability to catch the ball,
- 5:13Speaker 3: and I think you will catch the ball very well
- 5:15Speaker 3: in workouts, in private workouts.
- 5:19Speaker 2: Uh So that will increase his value.
- 5:21Speaker 3: But he is the best back on the board, and
- 5:24Speaker 3: some people will not be afraid to say, I'm getting
- 5:28Speaker 3: a pass catcher and a runner and you know somebody
- 5:32Speaker 3: who's impactful immediately against nickel defenses, you know, all over
- 5:37Speaker 3: the place.
- 5:38Speaker 2: So I think he's a unique case on this board.
- 5:40Speaker 3: The other thing working for those other skill guys is
- 5:44Speaker 3: unlike a lot of years, and this may be nil,
- 5:48Speaker 3: but there's sort of a doughnut in the wide receiver board,
- 5:52Speaker 3: like you got to you gotta cluster early worthy of
- 5:56Speaker 3: first round, early second round picks and then and there's
- 6:00Speaker 3: a pretty big gap until the next group. Uh So,
- 6:04Speaker 3: I think that will help some of these other skill
- 6:06Speaker 3: guys and that there there won't be as many wide
- 6:09Speaker 3: receiver options in the in the middle of the second,
- 6:13Speaker 3: late second round going into the third as there usually are.
- 6:17Speaker 4: All Right, I know we're drafty, but also we had
- 6:21Speaker 4: some major news today as Miles Garrett has decided he
- 6:24Speaker 4: wants to trade out of Cleveland. Now, look, he's sticking
- 6:26Speaker 4: to his word. He said, I'm gonna get some idea
- 6:28Speaker 4: what they think they're doing at quarterback, and then.
- 6:30Speaker 2: I'll make my decision.
- 6:31Speaker 4: When he was asked about this late in the Brown season, well,
- 6:33Speaker 4: the decision appears to.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Be he wants to be traded.
- 6:36Speaker 4: Jeff, do you think this is a legitimate get me
- 6:38Speaker 4: the hell out of town? Or is it just a
- 6:40Speaker 4: I want more money?
- 6:43Speaker 3: I think anybody who knows him says this is a legit.
- 6:47Speaker 3: He knows he's getting paid. You know, he's making he's
- 6:51Speaker 3: making pretty good money now. But the next deal he's
- 6:54Speaker 3: getting paid, there's you know, he's he's doing stuff we
- 6:57Speaker 3: haven't seen since Lawrence Taylor. So let's just put that
- 7:01Speaker 3: on the table. The issue, as always in the NFL,
- 7:05Speaker 3: unlike the NBA, is it's much harder for you as
- 7:09Speaker 3: the player to force the issue, which is why you
- 7:12Speaker 3: do it super Bowl week if you're the player, you
- 7:16Speaker 3: want to create some leverage if you don't think there
- 7:20Speaker 3: is a ton right now and this gets the public,
- 7:24Speaker 3: you know, the public opinion boiling about all of it,
- 7:29Speaker 3: and you know, puts the onus on the team. Now
- 7:31Speaker 3: going into the combine where everybody knows a lot of
- 7:35Speaker 3: discussions about everything go on.
- 7:37Speaker 2: So you get this out.
- 7:39Speaker 3: Super Bowl Week, a couple of weeks before the combine.
- 7:42Speaker 3: If you're the player, you increase your chances. The issue
- 7:46Speaker 3: for him is the Browns take on thirty six million
- 7:50Speaker 3: of dead money if they trade him, if they release him,
- 7:54Speaker 3: they can split that up and do all that, but
- 7:56Speaker 3: if you trade a guy, you don't get the split
- 7:58Speaker 3: dead money.
- 8:00Speaker 2: And given what they might.
- 8:02Speaker 3: Have to do with a quarterback who's already recovering from
- 8:07Speaker 3: an achilles tendon tear just a few weeks ago and
- 8:11Speaker 3: has the you know, for the team, the worst contract,
- 8:14Speaker 3: and you know it's great for the player, but for
- 8:16Speaker 3: the team it's the worst contract ever. It makes it
- 8:20Speaker 3: hard for the Browns to trade them even if they
- 8:22Speaker 3: want to, and they say they don't want to.
- 8:24Speaker 1: Absolute disaster what that organizations has managed to do to themselves,
- 8:29Speaker 1: the creator they have dug for themselves. Jeff Legwell brought
- 8:32Speaker 1: to you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers IBEW
- 8:36Speaker 1: Local sixty eight. Start with a job end with a
- 8:38Speaker 1: career Leggie and the coaching hiring cycle. Obviously, we know
- 8:42Speaker 1: you know Ben Johnson and Mike Rabel. They were the
- 8:44Speaker 1: two most saw it after and they landed gigs obviously
- 8:48Speaker 1: pretty much immediately for that next tier of coaching hires.
- 8:52Speaker 1: Is there one you like? Is there one that you
- 8:54Speaker 1: look at and you say that fit in that organization.
- 8:56Speaker 1: That's that's a good setup right there.
- 9:00Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, I think potentially, you know, I know,
- 9:05Speaker 3: you blumped him in as one of the best.
- 9:07Speaker 2: But I love the Rabel.
- 9:08Speaker 3: Yeah, that was probably my favorite because of his.
- 9:13Speaker 2: Track record too. He did win. I mean it wasn't uh.
- 9:18Speaker 3: He did well as a head coach, and I think
- 9:20Speaker 3: you give a guy who did well and is coming
- 9:24Speaker 3: back into it, I think they have a whole great
- 9:27Speaker 3: sense of what to do, and you know you don't.
- 9:30Speaker 3: He won't have Peyton Manning in the equation, but I
- 9:32Speaker 3: sort of equate. John Fox had had some success as
- 9:36Speaker 3: a head coach before he came here, and he took
- 9:38Speaker 3: the lessons he learned and brought them here. And I
- 9:42Speaker 3: think that's what I like. The Rabel hier A bunch.
- 9:46Speaker 3: I think the rest are you know people, you know,
- 9:50Speaker 3: I hear nothing but great things about Aaron Glenn, But
- 9:53Speaker 3: I do not think the Jets are an awesome place,
- 9:57Speaker 3: but he obviously knows what he's getting into there better
- 9:59Speaker 3: than most. So maybe he's been given assurance as other
- 10:04Speaker 3: people didn't get. But I've heard a ton of great
- 10:07Speaker 3: things about him as a coach, a leader, a personnel guy,
- 10:10Speaker 3: et cetera.
- 10:11Speaker 4: All Right, normally we don't ask you about these stories,
- 10:14Speaker 4: but considering they need a coach, I'm going to go
- 10:16Speaker 4: ahead and do it. And I am bringing this up
- 10:18Speaker 4: as a person that was raised in the Catholic Church.
- 10:20Speaker 4: We found out today Adam Schefter put the story out
- 10:23Speaker 4: there that the Saints helped with their pr team to
- 10:26Speaker 4: cover up some of the story of some gross atrocities
- 10:29Speaker 4: that went on in the archdiocese in New Orleans with
- 10:32Speaker 4: the bishops, so on and so forth. With the new
- 10:34Speaker 4: attention being paid to New Orleans and trying to get
- 10:36Speaker 4: to the bottom of how much they help steer the
- 10:39Speaker 4: story there, is that going to get some coaching candidates
- 10:41Speaker 4: like a Kellen Moore, who a lot of people said
- 10:44Speaker 4: that is going to want to talk to the Saints
- 10:45Speaker 4: and this is done. Will that have anybody thinking twice
- 10:48Speaker 4: about taking it? Choosing the Saints as an organization? How
- 10:51Speaker 4: big a story do you think this thing becomes to
- 10:53Speaker 4: where maybe somebody doesn't want to go there and start
- 10:55Speaker 4: their coaching career there.
- 10:58Speaker 3: You know, I don't know, you know, if he can
- 11:00Speaker 3: meant it in the coaching search beyond what kind of
- 11:03Speaker 3: environment are you going into? You know, it's the team
- 11:05Speaker 3: going to be in turmoil? Will there be some questions?
- 11:10Speaker 3: You know, will ownership's attention be diverted from winning football,
- 11:16Speaker 3: you know, to other things? I think those are the
- 11:18Speaker 3: things you're if you're a head coaching candidate, that's what
- 11:21Speaker 3: you're looking at. But that that was an Associated Press investigation,
- 11:28Speaker 3: and they they obtained emails, so you know, this is
- 11:32Speaker 3: all on the record that traced directly back to Saints'
- 11:36Speaker 3: email accounts. So there won't be any sort of denials
- 11:40Speaker 3: that they can they can issue with this, But as
- 11:43Speaker 3: far as what discipline they can face from the league,
- 11:47Speaker 3: I think that's pretty nebulous if they could or not.
- 11:51Speaker 3: You know, in theory, the personal Conduct Policy does apply
- 11:57Speaker 3: to owners and team presidents and all the rest of it.
- 12:00Speaker 3: But does this fall under that, you know, I don't
- 12:03Speaker 3: know if we have any precedent for that or not.
- 12:06Speaker 3: Beyond you know, what happened to John Gruden and and
- 12:11Speaker 3: sort of public opinion court of public opinion types of things.
- 12:17Speaker 3: But you know, again it would be something if you're interviewing,
- 12:20Speaker 3: you're going to ask about, you know, how does this
- 12:22Speaker 3: impact team building? And you know, will I be able
- 12:27Speaker 3: to get answers from people in power when I need it?
- 12:29Speaker 3: Are they going to be off doing other things dealing
- 12:32Speaker 3: with with these other issues. It's like when the Broncos
- 12:36Speaker 3: didn't have an owner owner. You know that stuff came up,
- 12:41Speaker 3: you know when people were looking at coming here.
- 12:44Speaker 1: Yeah, it's you. You're walking into a pr mess and
- 12:47Speaker 1: how much are you gonna be able to win and
- 12:49Speaker 1: have success? So these guys have got to think about,
- 12:52Speaker 1: like if you're a coaching candidate and you're walking into
- 12:54Speaker 1: that situation, it's like, this might be my only crack
- 12:56Speaker 1: at this and am I just gonna Am I gonna
- 12:59Speaker 1: flunk out of this thing and get flushed in the league? Cycles?
- 13:02Speaker 2: Yeah? For nothing? That was your You know, it doesn't
- 13:04Speaker 2: have nothing to do with you.
- 13:05Speaker 3: You know, these are issues a whole lot bigger than football.
- 13:09Speaker 2: You know you're talking about the.
- 13:10Speaker 3: Other issue is is just I mean, who faces the
- 13:16Speaker 3: public scrutiny more than the head coach. The head coach
- 13:20Speaker 3: speaks for the team more than anybody you know on
- 13:24Speaker 3: the team. So whether these issues have anything to do
- 13:28Speaker 3: with you or not, you're gonna be the guy answering
- 13:31Speaker 3: for them almost every day. Even if you have to
- 13:34Speaker 3: say no comment a lot, you still have to say
- 13:37Speaker 3: no comment a lot.
- 13:39Speaker 2: And I think that factors in for some people too.
- 13:41Speaker 1: Yeah, let me deal with everyone else's mess. Leggy, last thing,
- 13:45Speaker 1: the Luca Anthony Davis trade closest NFL equivalent that you
- 13:49Speaker 1: could that you can ever recall herschel Walker.
- 13:53Speaker 3: Yeah, herschel Walker giving the Dallas Cowboys three super Bowl
- 13:57Speaker 3: you know, wasn't herschel Walker didn't do it, but you know,
- 14:02Speaker 3: trading herschel Walker for all of the picks that eventually
- 14:05Speaker 3: became three super Bowl teams is is as close to
- 14:11Speaker 3: the shock the shock level is as this, I think.
- 14:15Speaker 3: And then when when Ditka traded his entire draft to
- 14:20Speaker 3: pay Ricky Williams, I think was the is the other
- 14:23Speaker 3: two that just sort of pop in my head right away.
- 14:26Speaker 2: I don't Superstar for Superstar. We've never seen anything.
- 14:30Speaker 3: Like this, I find it, So, you know, just on
- 14:33Speaker 3: a you know.
- 14:35Speaker 2: A guy who studies this stuff. I find it so fascinating.
- 14:40Speaker 3: It's almost like Dallas didn't want true value for him,
- 14:43Speaker 3: that they valued getting rid of him over getting value.
- 14:48Speaker 3: I mean, they traded a twenty five year old superstar
- 14:53Speaker 3: who's done things very few other players have done in
- 14:57Speaker 3: their first five years in the league, and they basically said,
- 15:02Speaker 3: we'd rather get rid of them in private than get
- 15:06Speaker 3: true value for him in public.
- 15:07Speaker 1: One first round pick. They got one first round pick
- 15:10Speaker 1: in the entire trade, by the way, coming from a
- 15:14Speaker 1: team that is gonna have Luca Donta John, it's all
- 15:16Speaker 1: won't even be a good pick. Unbelievable.
- 15:19Speaker 3: And look, you know, look I gotta be I understand
- 15:22Speaker 3: if you're fearful of giving him three hundred million dollars.
- 15:26Speaker 3: I get all that I do, I really do. Business
- 15:29Speaker 3: is business and all of that. But he's twenty five
- 15:34Speaker 3: and you're so, I guess, worried about his conditioning. He
- 15:39Speaker 3: played a hell of a lot of minutes last year
- 15:41Speaker 3: to get you to the finals. I mean, it's all,
- 15:45Speaker 3: it's it's just a fascinating that. It just shows you,
- 15:49Speaker 3: I think, and this happens in the NFL. When privacy
- 15:53Speaker 3: becomes your top value, you're not going to win as much.
- 15:56Speaker 3: And I think the Broncos fall into this trouble spot
- 16:01Speaker 3: a little more with Sean Payton as head coach, when
- 16:04Speaker 3: when secrecy is job one that puts winning down the list.
- 16:11Speaker 1: Interesting assertion at the very end right there from Jeff
- 16:14Speaker 1: Legwald scot to thinking we'll talk to him again on
- 16:16Speaker 1: Friday going into Super Bowl Licks Leggy, good stuff, buddy,
- 16:20Speaker 1: thank you, thanks all right, the great Jeff Legwald with
- 16:23Speaker 1: us there on a Monday afternoon, brought to you by
- 16:25Speaker 1: the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers IBW Local sixty eight.
- 16:29Speaker 1: You start with a job and you end with a career.
