- 0:10Hard Auto Group Countdown to kickoff. Bob Joyce will be hosting that of course,
- 0:14and then Bob, Wayne and Adam will have the game broadcast at three
- 0:18thirty here along the Yukon Sports networking online via the Varsity Network app and varsited
- 0:22Network dot com. Mike chris Pino back with the Jim Mora Tae Kwon Roberson.
- 0:27First three games of play for him went forty seven for ninety a little
- 0:32over fifty percent. Last two though, Jim thirty eight for fifty one,
- 0:36four touchdowns, averaging two thirty five in the year. I mean, this
- 0:40offense is starting to look like an offense that can move it both on the
- 0:44ground and through the year. That's got to be a nice, nice feeling
- 0:48for the coaching staff. Yeah, I think that it is. I think
- 0:53that everyone's gaining confidence, and success breeds confidence. Hard work breads confidence,
- 0:59you know, hard breeds confidence. Experience you know that take once getting down
- 1:06games, you know, I think sometimes that and we've brought this up.
- 1:08But I think sometimes we forget that he hasn't played a lot of snaps in
- 1:11college football, and the snaps that he has played have been kind of few
- 1:17and far between. So that consistency of play in competition, which is really
- 1:23what helps you improve the quickest, hasn't been something that he's been able to
- 1:27find in his career. Now he's getting that. And we've always known he
- 1:33was talented, but I think at that position, probably more than any position,
- 1:40getting repetitions in a game are what help you improve. And we're seeing
- 1:44that improvement. And you know, it's a kid that's desperate to be desperate
- 1:48to be a great player. I mean, he he works at it constantly.
- 1:51It's it's very important to him, and you know he's not done.
- 1:56You know, he's still improving every week, and it's fun to watch that
- 1:57happen. That's that's what you really love about coaching, is watching players make
- 2:02the improvements that you know they're capable of. Yeah, it's got to be
- 2:06an inspiration to you. I mean you've been you've been everywhere on every level
- 2:10and you've seen the great ones. To see a guy like him, yeah,
- 2:15QBR rating of one thirty one I don't put a lot of stock in
- 2:17that stuff, but it says that he's a pretty good quarterback right now,
- 2:22Tae Kwon Roperson, that's going to be to you. There's got to be
- 2:24some satisfaction in that. Yeah. I don't know what even that, what
- 2:29those numbers mean, Like I know the NFL rating system, I don't know
- 2:31the college one, but it sounds pretty good. And uh, you know,
- 2:36we want to see that continue to go up. And it just it
- 2:40gives you, It gives me more confidence. And I know for sure it
- 2:44gives Nick more confidence just kind of dial it up. He doesn't have to,
- 2:50uh, you know, worry that the kid's going to make the wrong
- 2:53decision. You know, he has more confidence when he calls a play that
- 2:58it's going to work and if it's if it's not exactly like it looked like
- 3:02in practice, that the take one is going to figure it out based upon
- 3:07the experience that he has. So it's a good feeling. We're gonna keep
- 3:12doing it. You know, we got we got to keep rolling. We
- 3:15got we can't can't sit here and say, oh, we've made it.
- 3:16I mean we're not even close. You know, we got a ton of
- 3:20work to do. Oh yeah, no, no question, no question.
- 3:23A little bit later in the show, we'll talk to Chase on one of
- 3:25your offensive tackles and he's going to say to me, I'm sure, Well,
- 3:29we're a running team, you know, and you're I know you've been
- 3:31saying that. Obviously, running football and everything else comes with it. But
- 3:36the team now averaging a little over one hundred and thirty two yards a game
- 3:39last year one hundred and ninety. But you're moving up in the right direction.
- 3:43I want to ask you about your offensive line coach, Gordon Samus.
- 3:46I love watching him work on the sidelines with his unit and the things he
- 3:51says to the guys and the way he coaches them up. Uh. I
- 3:54know you're on the defensive side more often, but you got to oversee the
- 3:58whole thing. What's your you of what Gordon Samus brings to the table.
- 4:03He's incredibly smart. He's just a very well rounded man. He coaches those
- 4:12guys really hard, but he loves him harder. I mean, he gets
- 4:15into him, and yet he does it in a manner that lets them know
- 4:20that it's always about them and never about him. He's very precise in his
- 4:26coaching points. He's He's a guy that's always trying to find the best way
- 4:30or a better way to do something. He invests heavily in his players.
- 4:34He cares about him as men. I can't say enough good things about him.
- 4:41I mean, I love him to death, and I have him speak
- 4:44to the team frequently because he's a history buff and he's able to relate lessons
- 4:50in history. You know where we are at points in time in the season
- 4:54of the offseason, and I just really feel pretty dumb are lucky that he's
- 5:00on our staff, And I know our players are benefiting from it because you
- 5:03see the improvement they're making. You know, you're going to talk to Chase
- 5:08and you know, you see what Christian's doing, and Yakari and Noel and
- 5:15Val. I mean, they just they're consistent week in and week out,
- 5:17regardless of the numbers in the run game have gone down. I mean,
- 5:20you know, every year is gonna be a little bit different. And I'm
- 5:24going to say we're running team when we're running the ball, but if we're
- 5:26throwing it, we're a passing team. So I think what matters to us
- 5:30is just getting the ball down the field and getting it in the paint.
- 5:33Yeah, it's interesting you say that he's a Gordon Samu's the history buff,
- 5:36so am I I'm constantly reading history stuff. We got to talk more about
- 5:41that. He was at William and Mary. They averaged over two hundred yards
- 5:45running. They led the CAAA, So he's got some history there. He
- 5:47knows what he's doing. I've been really fortunate in my career to be around
- 5:53some of the best, the most recognized offensive line coaches in football. You
- 5:59know, guys like Alex Gibbs and I mean just he's probably the most the
- 6:04most well known of him. But I've been around a lot of really,
- 6:09really, really really good offensive line coaches, starting with the Chargers through the
- 6:14forty nine ers with Bob McKittrick and the Saints, and this guy, he's
- 6:19just different, you know. He's like those guys. He sees the game
- 6:25a certain way. He's meticulous in his detail. He's a great communicator to
- 6:30his players. He's demanding, as players respect him immensely. They hang on
- 6:34every word he says. He's kind of I don't think he ever mastered your
- 6:40craft, but he's constantly working to master his craft. And it's just great
- 6:45to be around a guy like that. You know, you're right, it's
- 6:47inspiring. He knows how to run outside zone, you know, I mean,
- 6:53that's that's his play. He knows about how to run duo. That's
- 6:56his play. And if it's a play that we want to install that he's
- 6:59not an expert at he becomes an expert pretty darn quickly. Yeah, Gordon
- 7:02Samu is a real valuable part of that coaching staff. You gotta call him
- 7:05Gordy now, Gordy, Okay, you call him Gordon. I don't know
- 7:09if he responds to that. The only guys by Gordy. All right,
- 7:14good to know. Yeah, he probably wouldn't answer me if I yelled to
- 7:16him Gordon. Yeah, all right, Well thanks coach. I appreciate.
- 7:20That's why we do these shows. So I pick up on this stuff.
