- 0:17Speaker 1: by J. A. Carter. Paradise Lost by John Milton, Book ten,
- 0:26Speaker 1: Part two. He looked and saw the face of things
- 0:33Speaker 1: quite changed. The brazen throat of war had ceased to roar,
- 0:37Speaker 1: and now was turned to jollity and game, to luxury
- 0:41Speaker 1: and riot, feast and dance, marrying or prostituting as befell,
- 0:47Speaker 1: rape or adultery, where passing fare allured them. Thence from
- 0:53Speaker 1: cups to civil broils. At length a reverend sire among
- 0:57Speaker 1: them came, and of their doings great dislike, declared and
- 1:01Speaker 1: testified against their ways. He oft frequented their assemblies whereso
- 1:06Speaker 1: met triumphs or festivals, and to them preached conversion and
- 1:11Speaker 1: repentance as to souls in prison under judgments imminent but
- 1:16Speaker 1: all in vain, which when he saw, he ceased contending
- 1:20Speaker 1: and removed his tents far off. Then from the mountain,
- 1:24Speaker 1: hewing timber tall, began to build a vessel of huge bulk,
- 1:28Speaker 1: measured by cubit length and breadth and height smeared round
- 1:33Speaker 1: with pitch, and in the side a door contrived, and
- 1:37Speaker 1: of provisions laid in large for man and beast. When
- 1:41Speaker 1: lo a wonder strange of every beast and bird and
- 1:45Speaker 1: insects small came sevens and pears, and entered in as
- 1:50Speaker 1: taught their order. Last, the sire and his three sons,
- 1:53Speaker 1: with their four wives and God made fast the door. Meanwhile,
- 1:58Speaker 1: the south wind rose, and with black wings wide hovering,
- 2:02Speaker 1: all the clouds together drove from under heaven the hills
- 2:07Speaker 1: to their supply vapor and exhalation. Dusk and moist set
- 2:11Speaker 1: up a main. And now the thickened sky, like a
- 2:15Speaker 1: dark ceiling, stood down, rushed the rain impetuous, and continued
- 2:20Speaker 1: till the earth no more was seen. The floating vessel
- 2:23Speaker 1: Swum uplifted and secure with beaked prow, rode tilting o'er
- 2:28Speaker 1: the waves, all dwellings else flood overwhelmed, and them with
- 2:34Speaker 1: all their pomp deep under water, rolled sea, cover'd sea,
- 2:39Speaker 1: sea without shore, and in their palaces where luxury late reigned.
- 2:45Speaker 1: Sea monsters whelped and stabled of mankind, so numerous late
- 2:50Speaker 1: all left in one small bottom. Swum embarked how didst
- 2:55Speaker 1: thou grieve, then adam to behold the end of thy offspring,
- 2:59Speaker 1: and so sad depopulation thee another flood of tears and sorrow,
- 3:06Speaker 1: a flood thee also drowned and sunk thee as thy
- 3:09Speaker 1: sons till gently reared by the angel on thy feet,
- 3:13Speaker 1: Thou stood'st at last, though comfortless, as when a father
- 3:17Speaker 1: mourns his children, all in view, destroy'd at once, and
- 3:22Speaker 1: scarce to the angel utters. Thus thy plaint o visions
- 3:26Speaker 1: ill foreseen better had I lived ignorant of future, so
- 3:30Speaker 1: had borne my part of evil only each day's lot
- 3:34Speaker 1: enough to bear those now that were dispensed the burden
- 3:38Speaker 1: of many ages on me, light at once by my foreknowledge,
- 3:42Speaker 1: gaining birth, abortive to torment me ere, there being with
- 3:46Speaker 1: thought that they must be let. No man seek henceforth
- 3:51Speaker 1: to be foretold what shall befall him or his children.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Evil he may be sure, which neither his foreknowing can prevent,
- 3:59Speaker 1: and he the future evil shall no less in apprehension
- 4:03Speaker 1: than in substance, feel grievous to bear. But that care
- 4:08Speaker 1: now is past. Man is not whom to warn those
- 4:12Speaker 1: few escaped famine and anguish will at last consume wandering
- 4:16Speaker 1: and watery desert. I had hope, when violence was ceased
- 4:20Speaker 1: and war on earth all would have gone well. Then
- 4:23Speaker 1: peace would have crowned, with length of happy days the
- 4:26Speaker 1: race of man. But I was far deceived. For now
- 4:30Speaker 1: I see peace to corrupt, no less than war to waste.
- 4:34Speaker 1: How comes it? Thus unfold celestial guide, And whether here
- 4:39Speaker 1: the race of man will end to whom? Thus, Michael,
- 4:46Speaker 1: those whom thou last sawest in triumph and luxurious wealth,
- 4:51Speaker 1: are they first seen in acts of prowess, imminent and
- 4:54Speaker 1: great exploits, but of true virtue void, Who, having spilt
- 4:59Speaker 1: much blood and done much waste, subduing nations, and achieved
- 5:04Speaker 1: thereby fame in the world, high titles and rich prey,
- 5:08Speaker 1: shall change their course to pleasure, ease, and sloth, surfeit
- 5:13Speaker 1: and lust, till wantonness and pride raise out of friendship
- 5:17Speaker 1: hostile deeds in peace. The conquered also and enslaved by war, shall,
- 5:23Speaker 1: with their freedom lost, all virtue lose, and fear of
- 5:26Speaker 1: God from whom the piety feigned in sharp contest of battle,
- 5:31Speaker 1: found no aid against invaders. Therefore cooled in zeal thenceforth
- 5:36Speaker 1: shall practice how to live, secure, worldly or dissolute, on
- 5:40Speaker 1: what the Lord shall leave them to enjoy. For the
- 5:43Speaker 1: earth shall bear more than enough that temperance may be tried.
- 5:48Speaker 1: So all shall turn degenerate, all depraved, justice and temperance,
- 5:53Speaker 1: truth and faith for God one man, except the only
- 5:58Speaker 1: son of light. In a dark age against example, good,
- 6:02Speaker 1: against allurement, custom, and a world offended, fearless of reproach
- 6:07Speaker 1: and scorn or violence. He of their wicked ways shall
- 6:11Speaker 1: them admonish, and before them set the paths of righteousness,
- 6:15Speaker 1: how much more safe and full of peace, denouncing wrath
- 6:19Speaker 1: to come on their impenitence, and shall return of them derided.
- 6:24Speaker 1: But of God observed, the one just man alive by
- 6:30Speaker 1: his command, shall build a wondrous ark, as thou beheldest,
- 6:34Speaker 1: to save himself and household from amidst a world devote
- 6:38Speaker 1: to universal rack. No sooner he with them of man
- 6:42Speaker 1: and beast select for life, shall in the ark be
- 6:45Speaker 1: lodged and sheltered round. But all the cataracts of Heaven
- 6:49Speaker 1: set open on the earth, shall pour rain day and night,
- 6:54Speaker 1: All fountains of the deep broke up, shall heave the
- 6:57Speaker 1: ocean to usurp beyond all bounds, till inundation rise above
- 7:01Speaker 1: the highest hills. Then shall this mount of Paradise, by
- 7:07Speaker 1: might of waves be moved out of his place, push'd
- 7:10Speaker 1: by the horned flood, with all his verdure spoil'd, and
- 7:14Speaker 1: trees adrift down the great river to the opening gulf,
- 7:18Speaker 1: and there take root an island salt and bare the
- 7:22Speaker 1: haunt of seals and orcs and sea mews clang to
- 7:26Speaker 1: teach thee that God attributes to place no sanctity, if
- 7:31Speaker 1: none be thither brought by men who there frequent or
- 7:34Speaker 1: therein dwell. And now what further shall ensue? Behold? He
- 7:40Speaker 1: look'd and saw the ark hull on the flood, which
- 7:44Speaker 1: now abated, for the clouds were fled, driven by a
- 7:47Speaker 1: keen north wind, that blowing dry wrinkled the face of
- 7:51Speaker 1: deluge as decay'd, and the clear sun on his wide
- 7:55Speaker 1: watery glass glazed hot, and of the fresh wave largely
- 8:00Speaker 1: drew as after thirst, which made their flowing shrink from
- 8:04Speaker 1: standing lake to tripping ebb that stole with soft foot
- 8:08Speaker 1: toward the deep, who now had stopped his sluices as
- 8:12Speaker 1: the heaven his windows shut. The ark no more now floats,
- 8:16Speaker 1: but seems to ground fast on the top of some
- 8:19Speaker 1: high mountain fixed, and now the tops of hills as
- 8:23Speaker 1: rocks appear with clamor. Thence the rapid currents drive toward
- 8:27Speaker 1: the retreating sea, their furious tide forthwith from out the ark,
- 8:33Speaker 1: a raven flies after him. The surer messenger, a dove,
- 8:38Speaker 1: sent forth once and again to spy green tree or ground,
- 8:42Speaker 1: whereon his foot may light. The second time, returning in
- 8:46Speaker 1: his bill an olive leaf he brings pacific sign anon.
- 8:52Speaker 1: Dry ground appears, and from his ark the ancient sire
- 8:56Speaker 1: descends with all his train. Then with uplifted hands and
- 9:01Speaker 1: eyes devout, grateful to Heaven o'er his head beholds a
- 9:05Speaker 1: dewy cloud, and in the cloud a bow conspicuous with
- 9:09Speaker 1: three lifted colors, gay, betokening peace from God and covenant.
- 9:14Speaker 1: Knew whereat the heart of Adam erst so sad greatly rejoiced,
- 9:19Speaker 1: and thus his joy brought forth O thou that future
- 9:23Speaker 1: things canst represent as present Heavenly instructor, I revive at
- 9:28Speaker 1: this last sight, assured that man shall live with all
- 9:31Speaker 1: the creatures and their seed preserve far less. I now
- 9:35Speaker 1: lament for one whole world of wicked sons destroyed, than
- 9:39Speaker 1: I rejoice for one man found so perfect and so just,
- 9:43Speaker 1: that God vouchsafes to raise another world from him and
- 9:46Speaker 1: all his anger to forget. But say, what mean these
- 9:50Speaker 1: colored streaks in heaven distended as the brow of God appeased?
- 9:54Speaker 1: Or serve they as a glory verge of bind the
- 9:58Speaker 1: florid skirts of that same watter cloud, least it again
- 10:01Speaker 1: dissolve and shower the earth to whom the archangel dexterously
- 10:07Speaker 1: Thou aimest, so willingly doth God remit his ire, though late,
- 10:12Speaker 1: repenting him of man depraved, grieved at his heart when
- 10:16Speaker 1: looking down he saw the whole earth filled with violence,
- 10:19Speaker 1: and all flesh corrupting each their way. Yet those removed
- 10:23Speaker 1: such grace shall one just man find in his sight
- 10:27Speaker 1: that he relents not to blot out mankind, and makes
- 10:30Speaker 1: a covenant, never to destroy the earth again by flood,
- 10:33Speaker 1: nor let the sea surpass his bounds, nor brain to
- 10:37Speaker 1: drown the world with man therein or beast. But when
- 10:42Speaker 1: he brings over the earth a cloud, will therein set
- 10:45Speaker 1: his triple colored bow, wherein to look and call to
- 10:48Speaker 1: mind his covenant. Day and night, seed time and harvest,
- 10:53Speaker 1: heat and hoary frost shall hold their course till fire
- 10:57Speaker 1: purge all things new, both heaven and earth, wherein the
- 11:02Speaker 1: just shall dwell. Thus thou hast seen one world begin
- 11:06Speaker 1: and end, and man, as from a second stock, proceed
- 11:12Speaker 1: much thou hast yet to see, But I perceive thy
- 11:15Speaker 1: mortal sight to fail. Objects divine must needs impair and
- 11:19Speaker 1: weary human sense. Henceforth, what is to come, I will
- 11:24Speaker 1: relate Thou. Therefore give due audience, and attend this second
- 11:29Speaker 1: sours of man, while yet but few, and while the
- 11:32Speaker 1: dread of judgment past remains freshen their minds. Fearing the deity,
- 11:37Speaker 1: with some regard to what is just and right, shall
- 11:41Speaker 1: lead their lives and multiply apace, laboring the soil and
- 11:45Speaker 1: reaping prolenteous crop, corn, wine and oil, And from the
- 11:49Speaker 1: herd or flock oft sacrificing bullock, lamb or kid, with
- 11:54Speaker 1: large wine offerings poured and sacred feast, shall spend their
- 11:58Speaker 1: days enjoy unblamed, and dwell long time in peace by
- 12:02Speaker 1: families and tribes under paternal rule, till one shall rise
- 12:07Speaker 1: of proud, ambitious heart, who not content with fair equality
- 12:11Speaker 1: fraternal state, will arrogate dominion undeserved over his brethren, and
- 12:16Speaker 1: quite dispossesses concord and law of nature from the earth.
- 12:21Speaker 1: Hunting and men not beasts, shall be his game, with
- 12:26Speaker 1: war and hostile snares, such as refuse subjection to his empire.
- 12:30Speaker 1: Tyrannus a mighty hunter. Thence he shall be styled before
- 12:35Speaker 1: the Lord as in despite of heaven or from heaven,
- 12:39Speaker 1: claiming secred sovereignty, and from rebellion shall derive his name.
- 12:44Speaker 1: Though of rebellion others he accused. He with a crew
- 12:49Speaker 1: whom like ambition, joins with him or under him to Tyrannize.
- 12:53Speaker 1: Marching from Eden toward the west, shall find the plain
- 12:56Speaker 1: wherein a black bitumous gurge boils out from underground the
- 13:00Speaker 1: mouth of Hell. Of brick, and of that stuff they
- 13:04Speaker 1: cast to build a city in tower whose top may
- 13:07Speaker 1: reach the hen and get themselves a name. Least far
- 13:11Speaker 1: dispersed in foreign lands, their memory be lost, regardless whether
- 13:16Speaker 1: good or evil fame. But God who oft descends to
- 13:20Speaker 1: visit men unseen, and through their habitations walks to mark
- 13:24Speaker 1: their doings them beholding, soon comes down to see their
- 13:27Speaker 1: city ere the tower obstruct heaven towers, and in derision,
- 13:32Speaker 1: sets upon their tongues a various spirit to raise quite
- 13:36Speaker 1: out their native language, and instead to sow a jangling
- 13:40Speaker 1: noise of words unknown. Forthwith a hideous gable arises loud
- 13:46Speaker 1: among the builders, each to other calls not understood till horse,
- 13:52Speaker 1: and all in rage as mocked, they storm. Great laughter
- 13:56Speaker 1: was in heaven, and looking down to see the hubbub
- 13:58Speaker 1: strange and hear the din Thus was the building left ridiculous,
- 14:03Speaker 1: and the work confusion named whereto. Thus Adam fatherly displeased,
- 14:10Speaker 1: O exorable son, so to aspire above his brethren to himself,
- 14:14Speaker 1: affirming authority usurped from God not given. He gave us
- 14:19Speaker 1: only over beast fish, foul dominion absolute, that right we
- 14:24Speaker 1: hold by his donation. But man over men he made
- 14:27Speaker 1: not lord such title to himself, reserving human left from
- 14:32Speaker 1: human free. But this usurper his encroachment. Proud stays not
- 14:37Speaker 1: on man to God his tower and t in siege
- 14:40Speaker 1: and defiance, wretched man, What food will he convey up
- 14:44Speaker 1: thither to sustain himself and his rash army, where then
- 14:48Speaker 1: thin air above the clouds will pine his entrails gross
- 14:52Speaker 1: and famish him of breath, if not of bread, to
- 14:57Speaker 1: whom Thus Michael justly thou abhorrest that son, who, on
- 15:02Speaker 1: the quiet state of men, such trouble brought, affecting to
- 15:05Speaker 1: subdue rational liberty. Yet know withal since thy original lapse,
- 15:11Speaker 1: true liberty is lost, which always with right reason dwells twined,
- 15:16Speaker 1: and from her hath no individual being. Reason in man
- 15:21Speaker 1: obscured or not obeyed. Immediately, inordinate desires and upstart passions
- 15:27Speaker 1: catch the government from reason and to servitude reduce man
- 15:31Speaker 1: till then free. Therefore, since he permits within himself unworthy
- 15:36Speaker 1: powers to reign over free reason, God in judgment just
- 15:40Speaker 1: subjects him from without to violent lords, who, oft as
- 15:45Speaker 1: undeservedly enthrall his outward freedom. Tyranny must be, though to
- 15:51Speaker 1: the tyrant thereby no excuse. Yet sometimes nations will decline
- 15:56Speaker 1: so low from virtue, which is reason that no wrong
- 16:00Speaker 1: but justice, and some fatal curse annext deprives them of
- 16:03Speaker 1: their outward liberty, their inward lost. Witness the irreverent son
- 16:09Speaker 1: of him who built the ark, who for the shame
- 16:11Speaker 1: done to his father, heard this heavenly curse. Servant of servants,
- 16:17Speaker 1: on his viteous race. Thus will this latter as the
- 16:21Speaker 1: former world, still tend from bad to worse, till God
- 16:25Speaker 1: at last, wearied by their iniquities, withdraw his presence from
- 16:29Speaker 1: among them and avert his holy eyes, resolving from thenceforth
- 16:33Speaker 1: to leave them to their own polluted ways, and one
- 16:36Speaker 1: peculiar nation to select from the rest of whom to
- 16:40Speaker 1: be invoked, a nation from one faithful man to spring
- 16:45Speaker 1: him on this side. Euphrates, yet residing bred up in
- 16:49Speaker 1: idle worship, O that men canst thou believe should be
- 16:53Speaker 1: so stupid grown, While yet the patriarch lived, who scaped
- 16:56Speaker 1: the flood, as to forsake the living God, and all
- 17:00Speaker 1: to worship their own work in wood and stone for gods.
- 17:04Speaker 1: Yet him, God, the most high, vouchsafes to call by
- 17:07Speaker 1: vision from his father's house is kindred and false gods
- 17:12Speaker 1: into a land, which he shall show him, and from
- 17:15Speaker 1: him will raise a mighty nation, and upon him shower
- 17:18Speaker 1: his benediction, so that in his seed all nations shall
- 17:22Speaker 1: be blessed. He straight obeys, not knowing to what land,
- 17:27Speaker 1: yet firm believes I see him, But thou canst not
- 17:32Speaker 1: with what faith he leaves his gods, his friends, and
- 17:35Speaker 1: native soil Ur of Chaldea, passing now the ford to Haran.
- 17:41Speaker 1: After him a cumbrious train of herds and flocks and
- 17:44Speaker 1: numerous servitude, not wandering poor, but trusting all his wealth
- 17:49Speaker 1: with God, who called him. In a land unknown Canaan
- 17:53Speaker 1: he now attains. I see his tents pitched about Shachem
- 17:57Speaker 1: and the neighboring plain of Moreb. There By promise he
- 18:02Speaker 1: receives gift to his progeny of all that land, from
- 18:06Speaker 1: Haymath northward to the desert south. Things by their names
- 18:09Speaker 1: I call, though yet unnamed, from Hormone east to the
- 18:13Speaker 1: great western Sea, Mount Hermone yonder sea. Each place behold
- 18:18Speaker 1: in prospect, as I point them on the shore Mount Carmel,
- 18:23Speaker 1: here the double fountain stream Jordan true limit eastward. But
- 18:29Speaker 1: his sons shall dwell to sinear that long ridge of hills.
- 18:34Speaker 1: This ponder that all nations of the earth shall in
- 18:38Speaker 1: His seed be blest. By that seed is meant thy
- 18:42Speaker 1: great Deliverer, who shall bruise the serpent's head, whereof to
- 18:46Speaker 1: thee anon plainer shall be reveal'd this patriarch blest whom
- 18:53Speaker 1: Faithful Abraham, due time shall call a son, and of
- 18:57Speaker 1: his son a grandchild leaves like him in faith, in
- 19:01Speaker 1: wisdom and renown. The grandchild, with twelve sons increased, departs
- 19:07Speaker 1: from Canaan to a land hereafter called Egypt, divided by
- 19:11Speaker 1: the river Nile See, where it flows disgorging at seven
- 19:16Speaker 1: miles into the sea. To sojourn in that land, he
- 19:19Speaker 1: comes invited by a younger son in time of Dearth,
- 19:23Speaker 1: a son whose worthy deeds raise him to be the
- 19:25Speaker 1: second in that realm of Pharaoh. There he dies and
- 19:29Speaker 1: leaves his race, growing into a nation, and now grown
- 19:33Speaker 1: suspected to a sequent king, who seeks to stop their
- 19:36Speaker 1: overgrowth as inmate guests too numerous. Whence of guests, he
- 19:41Speaker 1: makes them slaves inhospitably and kills their infant males till
- 19:47Speaker 1: by two brethren. Those two brethren call Moses and Aaron,
- 19:51Speaker 1: sent from God to claim his people from enthrallment. They
- 19:55Speaker 1: return with glory and spoil back to their promised land.
- 19:59Speaker 1: But first the laws les tyrant who denies to know
- 20:01Speaker 1: their God or message to regard must be compell'd by
- 20:05Speaker 1: signs and judgments dire to blood unshed. The rivers must
- 20:09Speaker 1: be turn'd frogs, lice, and flies. Must all his palace
- 20:13Speaker 1: fill with loathe intrusion, and fill all the land. His
- 20:18Speaker 1: cattle must of wrought and moor and dye, botches and blames.
- 20:23Speaker 1: Must all his flesh emboss, and all his people Thunder
- 20:27Speaker 1: mixed with hail, hail mix'd with fire, must rend the
- 20:31Speaker 1: Egyptian sky and wheel on the earth, devouring where it
- 20:35Speaker 1: rolls what it devours, not herb or fruit or grain.
- 20:39Speaker 1: A darksome cloud of locusts swarming down must eat, and
- 20:43Speaker 1: on the ground leave nothing. Green darkness must overshadow all
- 20:48Speaker 1: his bounds, palpable darkness, and blot out three days last,
- 20:54Speaker 1: with one midnight stroke, all the first born of Egypt
- 20:58Speaker 1: must lie dead. Thus, with ten wounds, this river dragon,
- 21:02Speaker 1: tamed at length, submits to let his sojourners depart, and
- 21:07Speaker 1: oft humbles his stubborn heart, but still as ice, more
- 21:11Speaker 1: hardened after thaw, till in his rage, pursuing whom he
- 21:14Speaker 1: late dismiss'd, the sea swallows him with his host, but
- 21:19Speaker 1: them lets pass as on dry land between two crystal walls,
- 21:23Speaker 1: awed by the rod of Moses, so to stand divided
- 21:26Speaker 1: till his rescue gain their shore. Such wondrous power, God
- 21:31Speaker 1: to his saint, shall lend though present to his angel,
- 21:34Speaker 1: who shall go before them in a cloud and pillar
- 21:36Speaker 1: of fire, to guide them in their journey and remove
- 21:40Speaker 1: behind them. While the obdurant king pursues all night, he
- 21:44Speaker 1: will pursue, but his approach darkness defends between till morning. Watch.
- 21:50Speaker 1: Then through the fiery pillar and the cloud, God looking
- 21:53Speaker 1: forth will trouble all his host and craze their jariot wheels.
- 21:57Speaker 1: Then by command Moses once more his potent rod extends
- 22:01Speaker 1: over the sea, and the sea his rod obeys on
- 22:06Speaker 1: their embattled ranks. The waves return and overwhelm their war.
- 22:10Speaker 1: The race elects safe towards Canaan from the shore, advance
- 22:14Speaker 1: through the wild desert, not the readiest way, least entering
- 22:18Speaker 1: on the Canaanite alarmed war terrify them an expert and
- 22:22Speaker 1: fear return them back to Egypt, choosing rather inglorious life
- 22:27Speaker 1: with servitude for life to noble and ignoble is more sweet,
- 22:31Speaker 1: untrained in arms, where rashness leads not on this also
- 22:36Speaker 1: shall they gain by their delay in the wide wilderness.
- 22:40Speaker 1: There they shall found their government and their great Senate.
- 22:43Speaker 1: Choose through the twelve tribes to rule by laws ordained
- 22:48Speaker 1: God from the Mount of Sinai, whose gray top shall tremble.
- 22:52Speaker 1: He descending will himself in thunder lightning and loud trumpets
- 22:56Speaker 1: sound ordain them laws part such as apart attained to
- 23:00Speaker 1: civil justice, part religious rites of sacrifice, informing them by
- 23:05Speaker 1: types and shadows of that destined seed to bruise the serpent,
- 23:09Speaker 1: by what means he shall achieve mankind's deliverance. But the
- 23:13Speaker 1: voice of God to mortal ear is dreadful. They beseech
- 23:16Speaker 1: that Moses might report to them his will and terror cease.
- 23:20Speaker 1: He grants them their desire instructed that to God is
- 23:24Speaker 1: no access without mediator, whose high office now Moses in
- 23:28Speaker 1: figure bears to introduce one greater of whose day he
- 23:32Speaker 1: shall foretell, and all the prophets in their age the
- 23:35Speaker 1: times of great Messiah shall sing. Thus laws and right established.
- 23:41Speaker 1: Such delight hath God in man obedient to his will,
- 23:45Speaker 1: that He vouchsafes among them to set up his tabernacle,
- 23:48Speaker 1: the Holy One with mortal men to dwell by his prescript.
- 23:53Speaker 1: A sanctuary is framed of cedar, overlaid with gold, therein
- 23:57Speaker 1: an ark, and in this ark his testimony the records
- 24:01Speaker 1: of his covenant. Over these, a mercy seat of gold
- 24:04Speaker 1: between the wings of two bright Carabim. Before him burn
- 24:08Speaker 1: seven lamps, as in a zodiac representing the heavenly fires.
- 24:13Speaker 1: Over the tent, a cloud shall rest by day, a
- 24:16Speaker 1: fiery gleam by night, save when they journey, and at
- 24:20Speaker 1: length they come, conducted by his Angel to the land
- 24:23Speaker 1: promised to Abraham and his seed. The rest were long
- 24:27Speaker 1: to tell how many battles fought, how many kings destroyed
- 24:31Speaker 1: and kingdoms won, or how the sun shall in mid
- 24:34Speaker 1: heaven stand still an entire day and knight's due course.
- 24:38Speaker 1: Abjorn Man's voice, commanding, Sun in Gibeon stand, and thou
- 24:43Speaker 1: moon in the Vale of Agelan till Israel overcome. So
- 24:49Speaker 1: call the third from Abraham, son of Isaac, and from
- 24:52Speaker 1: him his whole descent, who shall thus Canaan win. Here
- 24:56Speaker 1: Adam interposed, Oh, sent from heaven enlightener of my darkness.
- 25:02Speaker 1: Gracious things thou hast revealed, those chiefly which concern just
- 25:06Speaker 1: Abraham at his seed. Now first I find my eyes
- 25:09Speaker 1: true opening, and my heart much eased. Erewhile perplexed with thoughts,
- 25:14Speaker 1: what would become of me and all mankind. But now
- 25:18Speaker 1: I see his day, in whom all nations shall be
- 25:21Speaker 1: blessed favor unmerited by me, who sought forbidden knowledge by
- 25:25Speaker 1: forbidden means. And yet I apprehend not why to those
- 25:29Speaker 1: among whom God will deign to dwell on earth, so
- 25:32Speaker 1: many and so various laws are given, so many laws
- 25:36Speaker 1: argue so many sin among them. How can God with
- 25:40Speaker 1: such reside to whom, Thus Michael doubt not but that
- 25:46Speaker 1: sin will reign among them as of thee begot. And
- 25:49Speaker 1: therefore was law given them to evince their natural pravity
- 25:53Speaker 1: by stirring up sin against law, to fight that. When
- 25:57Speaker 1: they see law can discover sin but not remove save
- 26:01Speaker 1: by those shadowy expiations weak the blood of bulls and goats,
- 26:05Speaker 1: they may conclude, some blood more precious must be paid
- 26:08Speaker 1: for man, just for unjust, that in such righteousness to them,
- 26:13Speaker 1: by faith imputed, they may find justification toward God and
- 26:17Speaker 1: peace of conscience, which the law by ceremonies cannot appease,
- 26:22Speaker 1: nor man the moral part perform, and not performing cannot live.
- 26:27Speaker 1: So law appears imperfect, and but given with purpose to
- 26:31Speaker 1: resign them in full time up to a better covenant discipline,
- 26:35Speaker 1: from shadowy types of truth, from flesh to spirit, from
- 26:39Speaker 1: imposition of strict laws to free acceptance of large grace,
- 26:44Speaker 1: from servile fear to filial works of law to works
- 26:49Speaker 1: of faith. And therefore shall not Moses, though of God
- 26:53Speaker 1: highly beloved being, but the minister of law his people
- 26:57Speaker 1: into canaan lead, But Joshua, whom the gentiles Jesus call
- 27:03Speaker 1: his name and office bearing, who shall quell the adversary,
- 27:07Speaker 1: separate and bring back through the world's wilderness long wandered
- 27:11Speaker 1: man safe to eternal paradise of rest. Meanwhile, they, in
- 27:16Speaker 1: their earthly canaan placed long time, shall dwell and prosper.
- 27:21Speaker 1: But when sins national interrupt their public peace, provoking God
- 27:25Speaker 1: to raise them enemies from whom as oft, he saves
- 27:29Speaker 1: them penitent by judges first, and then under kings, of
- 27:33Speaker 1: whom the second, both for piety, renowned and pucient deeds.
- 27:37Speaker 1: A promise shall recede irrevocable, that his regal throne forever
- 27:41Speaker 1: shall endure. The like shall sing all prophecy, that of
- 27:45Speaker 1: the royal stock of David, so I name this king
- 27:49Speaker 1: shall rise a sun the woman seed to thee foretold,
- 27:54Speaker 1: foretold to Abraham, as in whom shall trust all nations,
- 27:58Speaker 1: and to kings foretold of kings the last, For off
- 28:02Speaker 1: his reign shall be no end. But first a long
- 28:06Speaker 1: succession must ensue, and his next son for wealth and
- 28:10Speaker 1: wisdom famed the clouded ark of God, till then intense
- 28:14Speaker 1: wandering shall in a glorious temple enshrine. Such follow him
- 28:19Speaker 1: as shall be registered part good, part bad of bad.
- 28:23Speaker 1: The longer scroll, whose foul idolatries and other faults heaped
- 28:28Speaker 1: to the popular sum, will so incense God as to
- 28:32Speaker 1: leave them and expose their land, their city, his temple,
- 28:36Speaker 1: and his holy ark, with all his sacred things, a
- 28:40Speaker 1: scorn and prey to that proud city whose high walls
- 28:44Speaker 1: thou sawest left in confusion, Babylon. Thence called there in captivity.
- 28:51Speaker 1: He lets them dwell the space of seventy years, then
- 28:55Speaker 1: brings them back, remembering mercy and his covenant sworn to
- 28:58Speaker 1: David stablish as the days of Heaven returned from Babylon
- 29:04Speaker 1: by leave of kings their lords, whom God disposed the
- 29:08Speaker 1: House of God, they first re edify, and for a
- 29:11Speaker 1: while in mean estate live moderate till grown in wealth
- 29:15Speaker 1: and multitude, factious, they grow, but first among the priest's
- 29:20Speaker 1: dissension springs men who attend the altar, and should most
- 29:24Speaker 1: endeavor peace, their strife pollution brings upon the temple itself.
- 29:30Speaker 1: At last they seize the scepter and regard not David's sons,
- 29:34Speaker 1: then lose it to a stranger, that the true anointed
- 29:37Speaker 1: King Messiah might be borne, barred of his right. Yet
- 29:41Speaker 1: at his birth, a star unseen before in heaven proclaims
- 29:46Speaker 1: him come and guides the Eastern sages who inquire his
- 29:50Speaker 1: place to offer incense, mrh and gold. His place of birth,
- 29:54Speaker 1: a solemn angel tells to simple shepherds keeping watch by night.
- 29:59Speaker 1: They gladly thither haste, and by a choir of squadroned
- 30:02Speaker 1: angels hear his carol sung a virgin is his mother,
- 30:07Speaker 1: but his sire the power of the most High, He
- 30:10Speaker 1: shall ascend the throne hereditary, and bound his reign with
- 30:14Speaker 1: Earth's wide bounds, his glory with the heavens. He ceased,
- 30:20Speaker 1: discerning Adam with such joy surcharged, as had like grief
- 30:24Speaker 1: beendued in tears, without the vent of words, which these
- 30:27Speaker 1: he breathed. O Prophet of glad tidings, finisher of utmost hope.
- 30:33Speaker 1: Now clear, I understand what oft my steadiest thoughts have
- 30:36Speaker 1: searched in vain, Why our great expectation should be called
- 30:40Speaker 1: the seed a woman, virgin mother, hail high in the
- 30:43Speaker 1: love of heaven. Yet from my loins thou shalt proceed,
- 30:47Speaker 1: and from the womb the son of God most High.
- 30:50Speaker 1: So God with man unites needs. Must the serpent now
- 30:55Speaker 1: his capital bruise expect with mortal pain. Say where and
- 30:59Speaker 1: when their fight, what stroke shall bruise the victor's heal
- 31:04Speaker 1: to whom Thus Michael dream not of their fight as
- 31:08Speaker 1: of a duel, or the local wounds of head or heal.
- 31:12Speaker 1: Not therefore joins the sun manhood to God Head with
- 31:16Speaker 1: more strength to foil thy enemy. Nor so is overcome Satan,
- 31:21Speaker 1: whose fall from heaven a deadlier bruise disabled, not to
- 31:24Speaker 1: give thee thy death's wound, which he who comes thy
- 31:28Speaker 1: savior shall recure, not by destroying Satan, but his works
- 31:33Speaker 1: in thee and in thy seed. Nor can this be
- 31:37Speaker 1: but by fulfilling that which thou didst want. Obedience to
- 31:41Speaker 1: the law of God imposed on penalty of death and
- 31:45Speaker 1: suffering death, the penalty of thy transgression, Do and do
- 31:49Speaker 1: to theirs, which out of thine will grow. So only
- 31:53Speaker 1: can high justice rest a paid the law of God
- 31:58Speaker 1: exact he shall fulfill both by obedience and by love,
- 32:02Speaker 1: though love alone fulfill the law. Thy punishment he shall
- 32:06Speaker 1: endure by coming in the flesh to a reproachful life
- 32:09Speaker 1: and cursed death, proclaiming life to all who shall believe
- 32:13Speaker 1: in his redemption, and that his obedience imputed becomes theirs
- 32:18Speaker 1: by faith his merits to save them, not their own,
- 32:22Speaker 1: though legal works. For this he shall live, hated, be blasphemed,
- 32:27Speaker 1: seized on by force, judged, and to death, condemned, a
- 32:32Speaker 1: shameful and a cursed, nailed to the cross by his
- 32:35Speaker 1: own nation, slain for bringing life. But to the cross
- 32:40Speaker 1: he nails thine enemies, the law that is against thee,
- 32:44Speaker 1: and the sins of all mankind with him there, crucified,
- 32:48Speaker 1: never to hurt them more who rightly trust in his satisfaction.
- 32:53Speaker 1: So he dies, but soon revives death over him. No
- 32:58Speaker 1: power shall long usurp ere. The third dawning light returned
- 33:02Speaker 1: the stars of morn, shall see him rise out of
- 33:05Speaker 1: his grave, fresh as the dawning light. Thy ransom paid,
- 33:08Speaker 1: which man from death redeems his death for man as
- 33:12Speaker 1: many as offer'd life neglect not, and the benefit embrace
- 33:16Speaker 1: by faith not void of works. This god like act
- 33:21Speaker 1: annuls thy doom, the death thou shouldst have died in sin,
- 33:25Speaker 1: for ever lost from life. This act shall bruise the
- 33:29Speaker 1: head of Satan, crush his strength, defeating sin and death
- 33:34Speaker 1: his two main arms, and fix far deeper in his
- 33:37Speaker 1: head their stings. When temporal death shall bruise the victor's
- 33:41Speaker 1: heel or theirs, whom he redeems a death like sleep,
- 33:46Speaker 1: a gentle wafting to immortal life. Nor after resurrection shall
- 33:51Speaker 1: he stay longer on earth than certain times to appear
- 33:54Speaker 1: to his disciples, men who in his life still followed
- 33:58Speaker 1: him to them, shall leave in charge to teach all
- 34:01Speaker 1: nations what of him they learned, and his salvation. Them
- 34:05Speaker 1: who shall believe, baptizing in the profluent stream, the sign
- 34:09Speaker 1: of washing them from guilt of sin to life pure
- 34:13Speaker 1: and in mind prepared, if so befall for death like
- 34:17Speaker 1: that which the Redeemer died, all nations they shall teach,
- 34:21Speaker 1: for from that day, not only to the sons of
- 34:24Speaker 1: Abraham's loins, salvation shall be preached but to the sons
- 34:28Speaker 1: of Abraham's faith wherever through the world, so in his
- 34:32Speaker 1: seed all nations shall be blessed. Then to the heaven
- 34:37Speaker 1: of heavens, he shall ascend with victory, triumphing through the
- 34:40Speaker 1: air over his foes, and thine there shall surprise the
- 34:44Speaker 1: serpent prince of Air, and drag in chains through all
- 34:48Speaker 1: his realm, and there confounded leave, then enter into glory
- 34:52Speaker 1: and resume his seat at God's right hand, exalted high
- 34:56Speaker 1: above all names in heaven. And thence shall come when
- 35:00Speaker 1: this world's dissolution shall be ripe with glory and power
- 35:04Speaker 1: to judge both quick and dead, to judge the unfaithful dead,
- 35:08Speaker 1: but to reward his faithful and receive them into bliss,
- 35:12Speaker 1: whether in heaven or earth. For then and earth shall
- 35:15Speaker 1: be paradise, far happier place than this of Eden, and
- 35:19Speaker 1: far happier days. So spake the archangel Michael. Then paused,
- 35:26Speaker 1: as at the world's great period and our sire replete
- 35:30Speaker 1: with joy and wonder Thus replied, O goodness, infinite goodness immense,
- 35:37Speaker 1: that all this good of evil shall produce, and evil
- 35:40Speaker 1: turn to good more wonderful than that which by creation
- 35:44Speaker 1: first brought forth light out of darkness. Full of doubt,
- 35:47Speaker 1: I stand whether I should repent me now of sin
- 35:50Speaker 1: by me done and occasioned, or rejoice much more? That
- 35:54Speaker 1: much more good therefore shall spring to God, more glory,
- 35:58Speaker 1: more good will to men from God, and over wrath
- 36:01Speaker 1: grace shall abound. But say, if our deliverer up to
- 36:05Speaker 1: heaven must reascend, what shall betide the few his faithful
- 36:10Speaker 1: left among the unfaithful herd the enemies of truth? Who
- 36:14Speaker 1: then shall guide his people who defend? Will they not
- 36:17Speaker 1: deal worse with his followers than with him? They dealt,
- 36:21Speaker 1: Be sure they will, said the Angel. But from heaven
- 36:25Speaker 1: he to his own a comforter, shall send the promise
- 36:29Speaker 1: of the Father, who shall dwell his spirit within him,
- 36:32Speaker 1: and the law of faith, working through love upon their hearts,
- 36:35Speaker 1: shall write to guide them in all truth, and also
- 36:38Speaker 1: arm with spiritual armor, able to resist Satan's assaults and
- 36:42Speaker 1: quench the fiery darts. What man can do against them?
- 36:46Speaker 1: Not afraid though to the death, against such cruelties, with
- 36:50Speaker 1: inward consolations recompensed, and oft support it, so as shall
- 36:55Speaker 1: maze their proudest persecutors. For the spirit powered first on
- 36:59Speaker 1: his apostles, whom he sins to evangelize the nations. Then
- 37:04Speaker 1: on all baptized, shall them, with wondrous gifts, endue to
- 37:08Speaker 1: speak all tongues, and to do all miracles, as did
- 37:12Speaker 1: their Lord before them. Thus they win great numbers of
- 37:16Speaker 1: each nation, to receive with joy the tidings brought from Heaven.
- 37:21Speaker 1: At length their ministry performed, and race well run, their
- 37:25Speaker 1: doctrine and their story written. Left they die, but in
- 37:29Speaker 1: their room, as they foreworn, wolves shall succeed for teachers,
- 37:33Speaker 1: grievous wolves, who all the sacred mysteries of Heaven to
- 37:37Speaker 1: their own vile advantages. Sohll turn of lucre and ambition
- 37:41Speaker 1: and the truth with superstitions and traditions, taint left only
- 37:45Speaker 1: in those written records pure though not but by the
- 37:48Speaker 1: spirit understood, Then shall they seek to avail themselves of names,
- 37:53Speaker 1: places and titles, and with these to join secular power,
- 37:57Speaker 1: though feigning still to act by spiritual to themselves, appropriating
- 38:01Speaker 1: the spirit of God promised alike and given to all believers.
- 38:06Speaker 1: And from that pretense, spiritual laws by carnal power shall
- 38:09Speaker 1: force on every conscience laws which none shall find left
- 38:13Speaker 1: them enrolled, or what the spirit within shall on the
- 38:16Speaker 1: heart and grave. What will they then but force the
- 38:20Speaker 1: spirit of grace itself and bind his consort liberty? What
- 38:25Speaker 1: but unbuild his living temples built by faith, to stand
- 38:29Speaker 1: their own faith, not another's. For on earth, who against
- 38:33Speaker 1: faith and conscience can be heard infallible? Yet many will presume.
- 38:38Speaker 1: Whence heavy persecution shall rise on all who in the
- 38:42Speaker 1: worship persevere of spirit and truth. The rest, far greater apart,
- 38:48Speaker 1: will deem in outward rights and specious forms. Religion satisfied
- 38:53Speaker 1: truth shall retire, be struck with slanderous darts, and works
- 38:57Speaker 1: of faith rarely to be found. So shall the world
- 39:01Speaker 1: go on to good, malignant to bad men, benign under
- 39:06Speaker 1: her own weight, groaning to the day appear of respiration
- 39:09Speaker 1: to the just, and vengeance to the wicked, at return
- 39:13Speaker 1: of him so lately promised to thy aid the woman
- 39:16Speaker 1: seed obscurely then foretold, Now ampler known, thy Savior and
- 39:22Speaker 1: thy Lord last in the clouds from heaven, to be
- 39:24Speaker 1: revealed in glory of the Father, to dissolve Satan with
- 39:28Speaker 1: his perverted world. Then raise from the conflagrant mass, purged
- 39:32Speaker 1: and refined, new heavens new Earth, ages of endless date,
- 39:38Speaker 1: founded in righteousness and peace and love, to bring forth fruits,
- 39:42Speaker 1: joy and eternal bliss. He ended, and thus Adam Last replied,
- 39:50Speaker 1: how soon hath thy prediction seere blest measured this transient world?
- 39:56Speaker 1: The race of time till time stand fix'd be yond
- 40:00Speaker 1: is all abyss eternity, whose end no eye can reach.
- 40:05Speaker 1: Greatly instructed, I shall hence depart greatly in peace of thought,
- 40:09Speaker 1: and have my fill of knowledge what this vessel can contain,
- 40:14Speaker 1: beyond which was my folly to aspire. Henceforth I learned
- 40:18Speaker 1: that to obey is best, and love with fear the
- 40:21Speaker 1: only God to walk as in his presence, ever to
- 40:24Speaker 1: observe his providence, and on him soul depend merciful over
- 40:29Speaker 1: all his works, with good, still overcoming evil, and by
- 40:33Speaker 1: small accomplishing great things, by things deemed weak, subverting the
- 40:39Speaker 1: worldly strong and worldly wise, by simply meek. That suffering
- 40:44Speaker 1: for truth's sake is fortitude to highest victory and to
- 40:48Speaker 1: the faithful death. The Gates of life taught this by
- 40:52Speaker 1: his example, whom I now acknowledge, my redeemer, ever blessed
- 40:58Speaker 1: to whom. Thus also the Angel Last replied this having learnt,
- 41:04Speaker 1: thou hast attained the sum of wisdom hope no higher
- 41:08Speaker 1: though all the stars, thou knewest by name, at all
- 41:11Speaker 1: the ethereal powers, all secrets of the deep, all nature's
- 41:15Speaker 1: works or works of God in heaven e'er earth or sea,
- 41:19Speaker 1: and all the riches of this world enjoinst and all
- 41:22Speaker 1: the rule one empire. Only add deeds to thy knowledge answerable,
- 41:27Speaker 1: Add faith, Add virtue, patience, temperance, Add love by name
- 41:33Speaker 1: to come called Charity, the soul of all the rest.
- 41:37Speaker 1: Then wilt thou not be loath to leave this paradise,
- 41:40Speaker 1: but shall possess a paradise within thee happier far. Let
- 41:45Speaker 1: us descend now. Therefore, from this top of speculation, for
- 41:49Speaker 1: the hour precise exacts our parting. Hence, and see the
- 41:53Speaker 1: guards by me encamped on yonder hill, expect their motion,
- 41:57Speaker 1: at whose front a flaming sword in signs of remove
- 42:01Speaker 1: waves fiercely round. We may no longer stay. Go waken
- 42:06Speaker 1: Eve her also I will, gentle dreams have calmed, portending
- 42:10Speaker 1: good and all her spirits composed to meek submission, Thou
- 42:15Speaker 1: at season fit let her with thee partake what thou
- 42:18Speaker 1: hast learned, chiefly what may concern her faith to know
- 42:22Speaker 1: the great deliverance by her seed to come, for by
- 42:26Speaker 1: the woman's seed on all mankind, that ye may live,
- 42:30Speaker 1: which will be many days, both in one faith, unanimous,
- 42:34Speaker 1: though sad, which cause for evil's past, yet much more
- 42:38Speaker 1: cheered with meditation on the happy end, he ended, and
- 42:43Speaker 1: they both descend the hill. Descended Adam to the bower
- 42:47Speaker 1: where Eve lay sleeping, ran before, but found her waked,
- 42:51Speaker 1: And thus with words not sad, she him received. Whence
- 42:57Speaker 1: thou returnest, and whither wentest? I know? For God is
- 43:00Speaker 1: also in sleep and dreams advise which he hath sent
- 43:04Speaker 1: propitious some great good presaging, Since with sorrow and heart's
- 43:09Speaker 1: distress wearied, I fell asleep. But now lead on in
- 43:13Speaker 1: me is no delay with THEE. To go is to
- 43:16Speaker 1: stay here without THEE here, to stay is to go. Hence,
- 43:20Speaker 1: unwilling thou to me art all things under heaven, all
- 43:25Speaker 1: places thou, who for my wilful crime art banished. Hence
- 43:30Speaker 1: this further consolation, yet secure I carry. Hence, though all
- 43:34Speaker 1: by me is lost, such favor I unworthy am vouchsafed
- 43:38Speaker 1: by me. The promised seed shall all restore, So spake
- 43:44Speaker 1: our mother Eve and Adam heard well pleased, but answered
- 43:47Speaker 1: not for now to nigh the archangel stood, and from
- 43:52Speaker 1: the other hill to their fixed station, All in bright array,
- 43:55Speaker 1: the Charabim descended on the ground, gliding meteorus as evening
- 44:00Speaker 1: mist risen from a river o'er. The marish glides and
- 44:04Speaker 1: gathers ground fast to the laborer's heel homeward. Returning high
- 44:10Speaker 1: in front, advanced the brandished sword of God before them
- 44:14Speaker 1: blazed fierce as a comet, which, with torrid heat and
- 44:17Speaker 1: vapor as the Libyan air a dust, began to parch
- 44:21Speaker 1: that temperate climb. Whereat in either hand. The hastening angel
- 44:26Speaker 1: caught our lingering parents, and to the eastern gate, let
- 44:29Speaker 1: them direct and down the cliff as fast to the
- 44:32Speaker 1: subjected plain. Then disappeared. They, looking back all the eastern
- 44:39Speaker 1: side beheld of paradise. So late their happy seat waved
- 44:43Speaker 1: over by that flaming brand the gate with some dreadful faces,
- 44:47Speaker 1: thronged and fiery arms. Some natural tears they dropped, but
- 44:52Speaker 1: wiped them. Soon the world was all before them. Where
- 44:56Speaker 1: to choose their place of rest and providence their guide,
- 45:00Speaker 1: they hand in hand with wandering steps and slow through Eden,
- 45:05Speaker 1: took their solitary way. End of Book ten, Part two,
- 45:15Speaker 1: End of Paradise Lost
