• 0:34
Speaker 3: begin on Let's talk.
• 0:37
Speaker 4: Hello, ladies and gentlemen, missus Carl Lee with Let's Talk,
• 0:40
Speaker 4: and we have a we have a great guest in today,
• 0:45
Speaker 4: and uh, I'm gonna allow my co host, which is
• 0:49
Speaker 4: Lise Odie and Hollis Lucy Lewis in the building. I'm
• 0:53
Speaker 4: gonna let Hollis introduce them and trust me sit in
• 0:59
  Speaker 4: the whole show.
• 1:00
Speaker 5: So we have a West Virginia legend, a pioneer when
• 1:06
Speaker 5: it comes to you know, not only women's boxing, but
• 1:08
Speaker 5: I would say women's athletics definitely one of probably the
• 1:13
Speaker 5: first superstars of women's sports in general. In addition to boxing,
• 1:19
Speaker 5: we have Christy Martin, a KA daughter of a coma.
• 1:27
Speaker 6: Here back home in West Virginia.
• 1:29
Speaker 4: Well, thank you and thank you for being on the
• 1:31
Speaker 4: show and coming in the studio, I just have to
• 1:35
Speaker 4: I just have to ask the question because.
• 1:39
Speaker 2: I watched the show and.
• 1:43
Speaker 4: I'm trying and I'm trying to figure out, like where
• 1:46
  Speaker 4: did the love.
• 1:48
  Speaker 2: Of boxing actually?
• 1:49
Speaker 4: Like, Like, again, I realized that you kind of just
• 1:52
Speaker 4: jumped into it and and and you found you found
• 1:55
Speaker 4: that you were just great at it.
• 1:57
Speaker 2: But what was the what was the thing?
• 1:59
  Speaker 7: Like?
• 1:59
Speaker 2: When when did you wake up and say, you know what,
• 2:02
Speaker 2: boxing is going to be my thing? You know what?
• 2:04
Speaker 7: That is a great question because I'm still I'm still
• 2:07
Speaker 7: trying to figure that out.
• 2:09
  Speaker 6: I don't know, because it's crazy. I mean, nobody I.
• 2:12
Speaker 7: Had never seen a woman fight before. I didn't have
• 2:15
Speaker 7: anybody in my family that was a boxer. I had
• 2:18
Speaker 7: never been to a professional boxing match. I had been
• 2:21
Speaker 7: to tough man contest. I don't know why I thought
• 2:24
Speaker 7: it was a good idea other than the fact that
• 2:26
Speaker 7: people told me I couldn't do it. And I got
• 2:29
Speaker 7: that a little bit of if you tell me, I
• 2:31
  Speaker 7: can't git back.
• 2:32
Speaker 4: So so I'm sorry, Hollyday, but this is a trigging
• 2:36
Speaker 4: to be okay, So the.
• 2:38
Speaker 2: Tough man kind of processed for you?
• 2:43
Speaker 4: So did was that kind of like, Okay, I'm doing this,
• 2:46
Speaker 4: I'm doing pretty good at it. I should I should
• 2:50
Speaker 4: go to boxing or or you just it just was
• 2:54
Speaker 4: that just a transition out of the blue, and and
• 2:57
Speaker 4: that didn't have anything to do with the tough man stuff.
• 3:00
Speaker 4: Didn't have anything to do with it, like oh I
• 3:02
Speaker 4: might be a box.
• 3:03
Speaker 6: Too, No, not really.
• 3:06
Speaker 7: It was crazy because I did these couple tough my
• 3:09
Speaker 7: contests back in Beckley, West Virminia, and and then I
• 3:14
Speaker 7: got a call from a professional promoter out of Bristol,
• 3:18
Speaker 7: Tennessee that asked me to come fight as girl.
• 3:20
Speaker 6: Well I had won like four.
• 3:22
Speaker 7: Times at the tough man thing, so they didn't want
• 3:25
Speaker 7: me to do it anymore. And then I saw I thought,
• 3:27
Speaker 7: you know what, I'm about to graduate from college. My
• 3:29
Speaker 7: degree is in education. Let me go do this boxing
• 3:32
Speaker 7: thing one time. So you know, when you're old like
• 3:35
Speaker 7: I am now and people ask you that truth or
• 3:38
Speaker 7: dare question, you could always say I guess You'll never
• 3:40
Speaker 7: guess what I did. I did one professional boxing match.
• 3:44
Speaker 7: So when I did that first fight, I really thought
• 3:46
Speaker 7: it was going to be one and done. I had
• 3:48
Speaker 7: no intentions of ever having a career being a fighter,
• 3:52
Speaker 7: but so I go to Bristol, Tennessee, I fight the
• 3:56
Speaker 7: promoter's girl, not understanding the business of boxing. When the
• 3:59
Speaker 7: promoter caused you to fight his girl, all the cards
• 4:01
Speaker 7: are stacked against right. So I beat the crap out
• 4:06
Speaker 7: of this girl, knocked her down.
• 4:09
Speaker 6: And it was a draw, and I'm like, oh, so
• 4:12
Speaker 6: hold on, that sucks number one.
• 4:15
Speaker 7: And then I'm like, this is not really not a
• 4:17
  Speaker 7: good story. I didn't win, I didn't lose. Asked me
• 4:19
Speaker 7: what I do a rematch, and I'm like, of course,
• 4:21
Speaker 7: So now I have a better story for when I'm
• 4:23
Speaker 7: this age and I want to tell people that I
• 4:25
Speaker 7: one time did a boxing match. So I went back
• 4:28
Speaker 7: and I fought again, like two months later. Never been
• 4:31
Speaker 7: in a boxing gym before, never had a coach, never anything.
• 4:34
Speaker 6: But I knocked her.
• 4:35
Speaker 7: Out, and oh my god, was that the greatest feeling
• 4:39
Speaker 7: in the world. So I knocked this girl out and
• 4:42
Speaker 7: the crowd goes crazy, and I'm like, oh, I love
• 4:45
Speaker 7: this boxing. And but still never in a million years
• 4:49
Speaker 7: could I imagine that I would be promoted by don
• 4:52
Speaker 7: King fighting on those big cards.
• 4:54
Speaker 6: You know, I never even dreamed those dreams.
• 4:56
Speaker 2: Well, we're going to get to that.
• 4:57
Speaker 5: But I just want to take a step back because
• 5:00
Speaker 5: to boxing, prior to the tough man, you very athletic
• 5:04
Speaker 5: basketball player, softball player. High school. You're from an area
• 5:09
Speaker 5: I went to Mullins. Now that area is produced like
• 5:12
Speaker 5: the Kurt Warners, the Nick Sabans, the d'An toni brothers. Like,
• 5:16
Speaker 5: what was it during that era that just produced Christy Martin?
• 5:20
Speaker 5: What was it during that era that produced such great athletes.
• 5:23
Speaker 7: Well, I'm gonna tell you what produced Mallin's High school
• 5:26
Speaker 7: great basketball players was coach Don Knuckles. And if people
• 5:29
Speaker 7: here in West Virginia, at least my age, they're gonna
• 5:31
Speaker 7: probably remember Don Knuckles being the head coach at Mon's
• 5:34
Speaker 7: High School. Harry Brooks, the d'An toni brothers, Jerome Anderson,
• 5:38
Speaker 7: Mike Anderson, those guys.
• 5:40
Speaker 6: I mean, it's a little bit of town.
• 5:42
Speaker 7: We're talking about a town of two thousand people, and
• 5:43
Speaker 7: you have NBA guys coming there coming out.
• 5:47
Speaker 6: Of the school. Unbelievable.
• 5:49
Speaker 7: So I think that you know, coach Don Knuckles, and
• 5:52
Speaker 7: he was like very good and so I got some
• 5:55
Speaker 7: of that from him.
• 5:56
Speaker 6: Though that struck a.
• 5:58
Speaker 7: Little bit, you know, and when you beat somebody, let
• 6:01
Speaker 7: them know you beat them. And I got a little
• 6:03
Speaker 7: bit of that, and I got it from Don Knuckles.
• 6:05
Speaker 5: So and on this show we talk a lot about
• 6:07
Speaker 5: youth sports and youth development. So do you think that
• 6:10
Speaker 5: just coming from that very athletic background, once you transition
• 6:14
Speaker 5: to boxing, you were sort of a step ahead of
• 6:16
Speaker 5: the other females in the ring because you were just
• 6:18
Speaker 5: in general, you're just a good athlete. Besides, you know,
• 6:21
Speaker 5: the talent you developed for boxing.
• 6:22
  Speaker 7: I think that, Yes, I think that I had a
• 6:24
Speaker 7: little step up at the beginning other women because I
• 6:28
Speaker 7: was an athlete, truly an athlete. I played played basketball,
• 6:31
Speaker 7: played softball, I played basketball over at Concord. Yeah, so yeah,
• 6:35
Speaker 7: I was in a little better shape, had a little
• 6:37
Speaker 7: better coordination, and a lot more competitive drive.
• 6:40
Speaker 4: There it is, And I think that and I can
• 6:45
Speaker 4: feel that with you, you know understand, And I think
• 6:49
Speaker 4: if you are that, if the person is that competitive,
• 6:52
Speaker 4: they're not leaving the room without a w you know
• 6:55
Speaker 4: what I'm saying. They're not gonna let anybody try to
• 6:58
Speaker 4: get in front of them that they're not I don't win.
• 7:01
Speaker 8: So yeah, I was just gonna ask you thank you
• 7:03
Speaker 8: so much for being with us tonight. I was so exed.
• 7:05
Speaker 8: I was so pumped about this last night. I'm watching
• 7:08
Speaker 8: the movie and I'm like, oh gosh, I can't believe this.
• 7:10
Speaker 8: But anyway, so you just mentioned Christy that your first
• 7:13
Speaker 8: pro fight was a draw, but then your breakthrough fight
• 7:16
Speaker 8: came through when you were on the Tyson Bruno card
• 7:19
Speaker 8: in March of ninety six.
• 7:21
Speaker 9: Correct, right, yeah, walk us through that. What was that
• 7:23
  Speaker 9: like for you?
• 7:24
Speaker 8: This girl from coming from small town West Virginia in
• 7:26
Speaker 8: the big you know the bright lights?
• 7:28
Speaker 6: Are you kidding me? I'm from Mullins.
• 7:30
Speaker 7: I had eighty six people graduated in my graduatingly excuse me, jeez,
• 7:36
Speaker 7: And here I am fighting under Mike Tyson at the
• 7:38
Speaker 7: you Jim Grand in Las Vegas. Yes, promoted by you
• 7:41
Speaker 7: know the cards, Don King's show. We're on showtime, We're
• 7:44
Speaker 7: on pay per view.
• 7:46
Speaker 6: There's not even words to explain how I felt.
• 7:49
  Speaker 9: And you overwhelmed?
• 7:50
Speaker 7: I mean you just yeah, of course, because look when
• 7:53
Speaker 7: I remember getting into the ring and looking out and
• 7:57
Speaker 7: I knew every person in the first couple of rows.
• 7:59
Speaker 6: Did I know the person?
• 8:00
  Speaker 5: No?
• 8:00
Speaker 6: I had seen every person on TV.
• 8:02
Speaker 7: I mean, you know, SHA's there, sugary lives there, actors, actresses, everybody.
• 8:08
Speaker 7: Everybody's there to see Mike Tyson, but I, you know,
• 8:10
Speaker 7: I got the chance to entertain him a little bit
• 8:12
Speaker 7: before Tyson came out.
• 8:14
Speaker 5: And did you like understand the gravity of the moment
• 8:18
Speaker 5: being that and I believe you were the first female
• 8:22
Speaker 5: boxer to be in that spotlight. Did you understand sort
• 8:26
Speaker 5: of the history that was being set that night?
• 8:28
  Speaker 6: No?
• 8:29
Speaker 7: And I don't think I really understood it until recently,
• 8:32
Speaker 7: probably two years ago, when Amanda, Amanda Serrano and.
• 8:36
Speaker 6: Katie Taylor fought in Madison Square Garden.
• 8:39
Speaker 7: And then I thought about, but what if that fight
• 8:42
Speaker 7: hadn't happened in nineteen ninety six right with Sabody and
• 8:45
Speaker 7: really got people interested in talking about women's boxing, would
• 8:49
Speaker 7: this might have happened? And that's when I started really
• 8:53
Speaker 7: realizing that, hey, I had a little input in building
• 8:55
Speaker 7: women's boxing. Of course, there were women that had box
• 8:58
Speaker 7: before me, way back eighteen hundreds women were boxing, believe
• 9:01
Speaker 7: it or not, but no one had ever been given
• 9:03
Speaker 7: the opportunity and exposure that Don King gave me.
• 9:08
Speaker 2: I'm sorry, now go ahead, go ahead.
• 9:09
Speaker 9: What was to Christy?
• 9:12
Speaker 4: I can feel what was it about? Did you ever
• 9:15
Speaker 4: did he ever articulate to you. Why you why why
• 9:19
Speaker 4: did he pick you to be in that spotlight.
• 9:23
  Speaker 6: That's a really great question.
• 9:24
Speaker 5: I mean at the time, for those who don't understand,
• 9:26
Speaker 5: Don King was he was boxing.
• 9:28
  Speaker 2: He was boxing.
• 9:28
Speaker 5: He had been boxing for thirty own you make that cat.
• 9:34
Speaker 5: So did he ever say we're we're putting you in
• 9:37
Speaker 5: the spot because never.
• 9:39
Speaker 7: And he never gave me any like I'm gonna give
• 9:43
Speaker 7: you a little edge because you're a female boxer.
• 9:45
  Speaker 3: No.
• 9:46
Speaker 7: He promoted me just like he did his other the mailboxers.
• 9:49
Speaker 7: He put me out there sink or swim. He put
• 9:51
Speaker 7: me in opportunities just like he gave mail fighters. If
• 9:55
Speaker 7: you go out there and put on a great show,
• 9:57
Speaker 7: then you're gonna get the fight again.
• 9:59
Speaker 6: And that was my thing.
• 10:00
Speaker 7: Time I crossed through those ropes, I felt like I
• 10:02
Speaker 7: had Don King on my shoulder and that I needed
• 10:04
Speaker 7: to show show out and so that he would put
• 10:07
Speaker 7: me on the next big show.
• 10:09
Speaker 6: And that's that was kind of like the driving force.
• 10:12
Speaker 7: And when I'd be tired, you know, I gotta keep punching,
• 10:14
Speaker 7: keep punching, because Don King's sitting in row one and watching.
• 10:17
Speaker 4: Wow and and and your power, you know, and again
• 10:21
Speaker 4: I went back. Hollis was like, watch the movie. I said, well,
• 10:25
Speaker 4: I've already watched it, but I turned around and watched
• 10:26
Speaker 4: it again this morning, okay, And and there was there
• 10:29
Speaker 4: was there was a conversation about you and the power
• 10:34
Speaker 4: and your punching, and they compare you like to Mike Tyson,
• 10:38
Speaker 4: and I'm like, okay, So if someone were to compare
• 10:42
Speaker 4: me in the National Football League against somebody that great,
• 10:47
  Speaker 4: I don't know if if I.
• 10:48
Speaker 2: Would ever come off of that cloud? What is that?
• 10:51
  Speaker 10: Like?
• 10:51
Speaker 2: What is that? How does that make you feel?
• 10:53
Speaker 4: Because in most in most cases, everybody thinks Mike Tyson
• 10:58
Speaker 4: is if nothing, he's the probably the best puncher ever.
• 11:02
  Speaker 2: And that's who they're comparing you to. They're saying, that's
• 11:05
  Speaker 2: who you are.
• 11:06
  Speaker 6: Like awesome.
• 11:07
  Speaker 7: I mean, I'm a big Tyson fan and that's all
• 11:10
Speaker 7: like Fraser fan, all the punchers.
• 11:12
Speaker 6: That's why I like to watch.
• 11:14
Speaker 7: So Yes, to be mentioned in that same sentence with
• 11:17
Speaker 7: Tyson or any of those punchers is awesome. And and
• 11:20
Speaker 7: I do believe that for whatever reason, and part of
• 11:23
Speaker 7: them being a puncher, I think is in your mentality,
• 11:25
Speaker 7: Like I wanted to hurt people, I wanted there are
• 11:29
  Speaker 7: some people that.
• 11:30
Speaker 6: Want to just rounds.
• 11:31
Speaker 7: No, I want to knock you out in the first round,
• 11:34
Speaker 7: get my check and go home and get the you know,
• 11:36
Speaker 7: started on the next the next one, get ready for
• 11:38
  Speaker 7: the next one.
• 11:39
Speaker 6: I I just wanted to knock people out. That's what
• 11:41
Speaker 6: I want to do.
• 11:42
Speaker 4: It's crazy to me to to look at you and
• 11:45
Speaker 4: hear what's coming out of your mouth, because it's like,
• 11:48
Speaker 4: it doesn't like it's like, well, if you gave her,
• 11:51
Speaker 4: I gave her a church hug and she still rock.
• 11:53
Speaker 5: Hard and all that food, she probably still got a
• 11:59
  Speaker 5: nice right hook.
• 12:00
Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, it just doesn't it just it doesn't
• 12:05
Speaker 4: seem like the person that I'm looking at, the person
• 12:08
Speaker 4: that I'm talking to, is saying this, and I'm watching
• 12:12
Speaker 4: it on television and seeing that this was this is
• 12:15
  Speaker 4: how it is.
• 12:16
  Speaker 2: It's crazy to me, That's what I don't.
• 12:19
Speaker 7: Know, if you know, if you guys will remember Lucia Riker,
• 12:22
Speaker 7: that was a big fight. It was supposed to be
• 12:23
Speaker 7: the first million dollar fight between two women. That was
• 12:25
Speaker 7: me and Lucia are supposed to fight each other back
• 12:27
Speaker 7: in two or something. But she looked like a dude, right,
• 12:32
Speaker 7: and I didn't, So everybody thought she was just going
• 12:35
Speaker 7: to destroy me. So looks can be to see the
• 12:38
Speaker 7: book by the cover and I do you know, I
• 12:41
Speaker 7: hope that my smile invites people in and then boom.
• 12:47
  Speaker 5: That.
• 12:48
  Speaker 9: Is perfect.
• 12:50
Speaker 8: So I know, in the parking lot when we were
• 12:52
Speaker 8: waiting to come in, Christy, we were talking a little
• 12:54
Speaker 8: bit about your promoting events right now for for boxing,
• 12:58
Speaker 8: and mainly you're doing it for for male boxing events,
• 13:02
Speaker 8: and so we talked a little bit about you know,
• 13:06
Speaker 8: with female boxing, what do you what do you envision
• 13:09
Speaker 8: for the future of it.
• 13:10
Speaker 9: Do you feel like that.
• 13:10
Speaker 8: It's it's going the way it should be going, or
• 13:12
Speaker 8: do you feel like it's going in the wrong direction.
• 13:14
Speaker 9: What's your opinion of that?
• 13:16
Speaker 7: I think I love him or hate him. I think
• 13:19
Speaker 7: Jake Paul's doing great things for women's boxing.
• 13:21
Speaker 6: Okay, he has the card.
• 13:23
Speaker 7: Now it's going to be the trilogy with with Taylor
• 13:25
Speaker 7: and Soronto happening in Madison Square Garden and on All
• 13:28
  Speaker 7: Women's Show.
• 13:29
Speaker 6: I don't really like the All Women's Show.
• 13:32
  Speaker 7: I think let's don't separate women's boxing from men's boxing.
• 13:35
Speaker 6: Let's just have boxing.
• 13:37
Speaker 7: So let's mix it up and let's have some guys
• 13:39
Speaker 7: let's you know, Amanda and Katie Taylor be the main event,
• 13:42
Speaker 7: but put some dudes on there too.
• 13:44
Speaker 6: Sure, but anyway he's paying them. I mean I think
• 13:47
Speaker 6: they're making like double digit millions.
• 13:52
Speaker 5: So yeah, and to that point, I don't like that neither.
• 13:56
Speaker 5: I think boxing does a poor job of being one note, right.
• 14:00
Speaker 5: I think that you know, if you're gonna have a
• 14:02
Speaker 5: big fight, you can have women at various weight classes.
• 14:05
Speaker 5: You can have men in various weight classes. Like you
• 14:07
Speaker 5: don't have to have an all mid aweight card, all
• 14:10
Speaker 5: heavyweight card, all women, all men. I think it's better
• 14:13
Speaker 5: when you mix it up and you have those prominent
• 14:15
Speaker 5: fights at each different weight class and gender and everything
• 14:19
  Speaker 5: like that.
• 14:20
Speaker 7: Because I think that this will a lot of people
• 14:23
Speaker 7: are gonna tune in because Taylor Suana is such a
• 14:25
  Speaker 7: good it's a great fight. It's been a great fight
• 14:27
Speaker 7: two times right now, It's gonna be a great fight
• 14:29
  Speaker 7: the third time.
• 14:30
Speaker 6: And so they're gonna see some of these other female fighters.
• 14:33
Speaker 7: But it's still gonna I think it's still gonna divide
• 14:37
Speaker 7: the fans. We're gonna still have some fans that are
• 14:40
Speaker 7: not gonna watch because it's all women, and that's just
• 14:42
Speaker 7: probably that might be the old school guys. Maybe the
• 14:44
Speaker 7: younger male generation will watch it, and then you're, yeah,
• 14:48
Speaker 7: it's you're gonna get some of the streaky guys also
• 14:51
  Speaker 7: gonna watch it.
• 14:53
  Speaker 6: I met.
• 14:54
Speaker 7: We gotta call it what it is because early in
• 14:56
Speaker 7: my career I had I had guys sending me messages.
• 14:59
Speaker 6: What I them and they wanted to pay me to
• 15:01
Speaker 6: spar them. I had freaks like no, no, we like
• 15:07
Speaker 6: to see women hit each other. We want to see
• 15:10
Speaker 6: and it was a sexual thing. Yeah, so yeah, I
• 15:13
  Speaker 6: don't know, Yeah, I don't know. That's so that that
• 15:16
Speaker 6: part of that keeps playing in my mind when I.
• 15:17
Speaker 7: Think about an all women's card, like I think it's
• 15:21
  Speaker 7: it hurts women's.
• 15:21
Speaker 4: Box And you said something also, you you talked about
• 15:26
Speaker 4: somewhat along the same lines that you didn't you don't
• 15:29
Speaker 4: necessarily like being considered like the best female boxer. Why
• 15:34
Speaker 4: are you just not called a boxer? Why do they
• 15:38
  Speaker 4: have to put.
• 15:40
Speaker 2: The female part in it?
• 15:42
Speaker 4: So you so, because what you're saying is when you
• 15:45
Speaker 4: say it's female, you're saying it's something less than or.
• 15:51
  Speaker 2: Or whatever.
• 15:52
Speaker 7: Right, I agree with you, well exactly, And that was
• 15:54
Speaker 7: the whole thing when when people left the arena, I
• 15:56
Speaker 7: wanted them to say.
• 15:57
  Speaker 6: Wow, Chrissy's a good fighter, a good boxers. I want
• 16:03
Speaker 6: to say she's good.
• 16:04
Speaker 8: You think it's because it's been predominantly males. I mean
• 16:07
Speaker 8: throughout the years, what people are attracted to on the television,
• 16:10
Speaker 8: that's probably why they kind of like categorize it.
• 16:13
Speaker 9: Probably Yeah, yeah, I mean I do.
• 16:17
Speaker 6: I feel like it. Maybe I'm blinded, blinding my own self, but.
• 16:21
Speaker 7: I believe that I did crossover and people started to say, Wow,
• 16:24
  Speaker 7: she's just a good fighter. And that's what they're saying
• 16:27
Speaker 7: about Taylor and Toronto. I mean, they're just good fighters.
• 16:29
Speaker 7: It doesn't matter if they're women or sure what.
• 16:32
  Speaker 2: Yes, I see. I would, I would.
• 16:33
Speaker 5: I would slightly disagree with that because I think that
• 16:35
Speaker 5: there is a is a space just for like women's sports.
• 16:39
Speaker 5: And I would argue, and we've argued on this show
• 16:42
Speaker 5: that when I look at women's boxing, it's it's more entertaining.
• 16:46
Speaker 5: When I look at women's basketball now, it is more entertaining,
• 16:49
  Speaker 5: it's it's a better watch.
• 16:51
Speaker 2: So I think it.
• 16:52
Speaker 5: So I think you know, to to to to promote
• 16:55
Speaker 5: and and to you know, to say, hey, this is
• 16:58
  Speaker 5: a women's sport. This is a win things. It's not
• 17:00
Speaker 5: necessarily a bad thing. I think where it hurts, to
• 17:03
Speaker 5: your point, it hurts when it comes to the final
• 17:06
Speaker 5: because they try to lessen it because it's a women's thing,
• 17:09
  Speaker 5: not because it's it's a better watch, I believe.
• 17:12
Speaker 2: And I'll say that, and I'll say this to agree
• 17:14
  Speaker 2: with Hollis.
• 17:17
Speaker 4: When when I say female sports, I'm saying it in
• 17:20
  Speaker 4: a in a in a in a positive. I'm not saying, oh,
• 17:24
  Speaker 4: it's not a men's thing, you know, it's it's female
• 17:28
Speaker 4: and it's something valuable and something that's important. I don't know,
• 17:33
Speaker 4: And I and I say that to say to try
• 17:36
Speaker 4: to figure out, like the separation, I don't think. I
• 17:41
Speaker 4: can't say it's always the separation isn't always negative.
• 17:45
Speaker 2: But I think for the most part, I think it
• 17:47
Speaker 2: can be. It can be. It can but I think.
• 17:50
Speaker 4: For most men, and I'll say, especially if you're an athlete,
• 17:53
Speaker 4: if you've been an athlete, I think when you're saying female,
• 17:56
Speaker 4: she's the best female.
• 17:57
  Speaker 2: Or she's great, you know, I don't.
• 18:01
Speaker 4: I don't that My intent is not that it's not
• 18:04
Speaker 4: like I'm looking at you.
• 18:06
Speaker 8: A lesser as lesser. You're looking at it as the home,
• 18:11
Speaker 8: the whole, as the whole.
• 18:12
Speaker 5: Yes, And that's why, like in the intro, that's why
• 18:14
Speaker 5: when I when I refer to you, I think to
• 18:17
Speaker 5: limit you to boxing is very limited in and of itself,
• 18:21
Speaker 5: because I think it was a gateway to sports, right,
• 18:25
Speaker 5: because a lot of us grew up watching boxing, Right,
• 18:28
  Speaker 5: that was.
• 18:28
  Speaker 2: The big thing.
• 18:29
Speaker 5: That was like the Super Bowl every three months, right,
• 18:31
Speaker 5: and we get to see, you know, a female boxer
• 18:34
Speaker 5: take the spotlight. And now I think what we're seeing
• 18:37
Speaker 5: twenty five thirty years later is just the the proliferation
• 18:41
Speaker 5: of female sports. So when you talk about, like I said, basketball, boxing, softball,
• 18:46
Speaker 5: to me, it's going to be the next great. Yes,
• 18:47
Speaker 5: softball is going to be it, you know, in the future,
• 18:50
Speaker 5: I think. So, I just I love the idea of
• 18:53
Speaker 5: but I have four daughters, so I'm I'm gonna you
• 18:56
Speaker 5: know what I mean. So I just definitely love the
• 18:58
Speaker 5: idea of women's and kind of what it represents. But
• 19:02
Speaker 5: what I wanted to ask is like kind of going
• 19:03
Speaker 5: through your your career, once you get you know, you
• 19:07
Speaker 5: have those first couple of fights, you have the you're
• 19:10
Speaker 5: in that spotlight kind of what was your mindset moving
• 19:15
Speaker 5: forward as far as like, were you chasing sort of championships,
• 19:21
Speaker 5: you chasing the spotlight, or you chasing just straight up
• 19:23
Speaker 5: knockouts you just want to be just the best? Or
• 19:26
Speaker 5: is like what was your mindset after those first couple
• 19:29
  Speaker 5: of big fights.
• 19:29
Speaker 7: So it was just I wanted to be the best
• 19:32
Speaker 7: that was out there, and at that particular time, the
• 19:36
Speaker 7: major organizations didn't even have they didn't recognize women champions.
• 19:41
Speaker 7: So the WBC, which is to me, the green belt,
• 19:45
Speaker 7: you know, that's the one everybody wants, they actually named
• 19:47
Speaker 7: me an honorary champion now sitting. And then a couple
• 19:51
Speaker 7: of years later they started ranking women and started actually
• 19:54
Speaker 7: sanctioning their fights, and at WBA did the same thing.
• 19:57
Speaker 7: They gave an honorary title. And that was good enough
• 20:00
Speaker 7: because I didn't want to fight for the women's titles.
• 20:02
  Speaker 6: I didn't.
• 20:02
Speaker 7: I didn't feel like I wanted to be part of boxing.
• 20:05
Speaker 7: And what I felt like was part of boxing.
• 20:07
Speaker 6: Was the WBC, the WBA, the IVF, those.
• 20:10
Speaker 7: Guys that have been established, not a women's organization. I
• 20:13
Speaker 7: wanted to be a fighter, Okay, that makes it right.
• 20:16
  Speaker 6: I mean I wanted to be a fighter, So I
• 20:18
Speaker 6: didn't give credibility to the women's.
• 20:21
Speaker 5: So did you ever, like what what championships did you
• 20:24
Speaker 5: hold during your career?
• 20:25
Speaker 6: The WBC, which the World Boxing Council.
• 20:28
  Speaker 2: Okay, nice? Hmmm.
• 20:31
Speaker 4: When you look at when you look at sports today
• 20:34
Speaker 4: and you see the women's sports, do you have one
• 20:40
Speaker 4: that you think, what is your favorite sport?
• 20:43
  Speaker 2: Is it?
• 20:43
Speaker 4: Is it still boxing or is it something else? And
• 20:47
Speaker 4: do you feel like that the that the young ladies
• 20:49
Speaker 4: are representing their sports the way that they should.
• 20:54
  Speaker 7: Well, I still watch a lot of boxing. I don't
• 20:56
Speaker 7: see a lot of women's boxing because it's not.
• 20:59
Speaker 6: You don't see it TV.
• 21:00
Speaker 7: You know. I watched a little bit of basketball because
• 21:03
Speaker 7: I think Caitlyn Clark is.
• 21:04
  Speaker 6: A bad app.
• 21:10
Speaker 7: But my favorite time of year probably is college football,
• 21:12
  Speaker 7: you know, Okay.
• 21:14
Speaker 6: When August rolls around, I'm all about Saturday.
• 21:16
Speaker 5: So speaking of just of women's box and I know
• 21:19
Speaker 5: one of the sort of the controversies is the time
• 21:22
Speaker 5: limit per round. So currently, if you don't know, out there,
• 21:26
Speaker 5: women fight two minute rounds. Men fight three minute rounds.
• 21:29
Speaker 5: And I think you women's have a max round limit
• 21:32
Speaker 5: of ten or is it eight?
• 21:34
  Speaker 2: It's ten?
• 21:34
Speaker 5: So what do you think about adding that extra minute,
• 21:37
Speaker 5: because a lot of the conversation is like, we'll see
• 21:39
Speaker 5: more knockouts if we add the extra minute.
• 21:41
Speaker 7: Okay, So I'm glad you brought that up because when
• 21:44
Speaker 7: I first started back in nineteen eighty nine, a long
• 21:46
Speaker 7: time ago, I fought three minute rounds because it was
• 21:50
Speaker 7: just like the guys, I mean, women's boxing was new.
• 21:52
Speaker 7: Somewhere along the line, it got cut down to two
• 21:54
Speaker 7: minute rounds, but guess what, I still knocked out thirty
• 21:57
  Speaker 7: one people.
• 21:59
Speaker 6: So I understand why it's such a big deal. Oh,
• 22:03
Speaker 6: we need that extra minute to knock people out. No,
• 22:06
  Speaker 6: you don't.
• 22:06
Speaker 7: You can knock them out in two minutes if you
• 22:08
Speaker 7: can punch and and that's the whole thing, because in
• 22:12
Speaker 7: that two to three minute the fight becomes boring, especially
• 22:16
Speaker 7: when you get two rounds. Seven eight nineteen. I said, actually, recently,
• 22:21
Speaker 7: I'm not sure it would be a bad thing if
• 22:23
Speaker 7: the guys started fighting two minute rounds, because some of
• 22:25
Speaker 7: the guy fights have been very boring lately.
• 22:28
Speaker 6: And that's in jest. I don't mean that, but.
• 22:32
Speaker 2: I agree with that.
• 22:35
Speaker 7: I liked because let's go just go out there and
• 22:38
Speaker 7: like punch from bell to bell, let's be exciting. Let's
• 22:40
Speaker 7: let's let the fans leave talking about our fights. And
• 22:44
  Speaker 7: I don't think it's a bad thing. And we're not
• 22:45
Speaker 7: gonna get paid more by fighting an extra minute. We're
• 22:47
  Speaker 7: gonna get paid.
• 22:48
Speaker 5: To say, And one of the like again, I'm I'm
• 22:51
Speaker 5: a fan of just boxing a general male female, And
• 22:53
Speaker 5: one of like, I like Alicia Bumgardner, I like Christian Seals,
• 22:56
Speaker 5: but one of the I guess that the criticisms of
• 23:02
Speaker 5: Christian Shields, who probably is at the top of the
• 23:05
Speaker 5: pecking order when it comes to women boxing, is just
• 23:08
Speaker 5: the lack of knockout power, like.
• 23:11
  Speaker 2: From a technical.
• 23:14
Speaker 5: From a technical standpoint, for somebody who knows what, what
• 23:18
Speaker 5: do you contribute that to? Because she looks strong, she
• 23:22
Speaker 5: looks fit, I mean, but she just lacks knockout power.
• 23:26
Speaker 7: To knock someone out, you have to be willing to
• 23:28
Speaker 7: put yourself in position to be knocked out. You cannot
• 23:34
Speaker 7: be scared, you cannot have fear, you can't you have
• 23:36
Speaker 7: to have the dog in you. You can talk dog
• 23:40
Speaker 7: all you want. It's got to show me.
• 23:44
  Speaker 2: And see.
• 23:48
  Speaker 8: That.
• 23:49
Speaker 4: See to me, that sounds like that sounds like a
• 23:51
Speaker 4: football conversation, Like like if I just heard part of
• 23:55
Speaker 4: that that could be a football.
• 23:56
Speaker 2: Like you either love to hit or you just you
• 24:00
  Speaker 2: just don't.
• 24:02
Speaker 5: And but I think, but I think that the point
• 24:04
Speaker 5: is like you gotta be willing to get hit, exactly hit,
• 24:09
Speaker 5: but I'm hit, I don't want to get.
• 24:13
Speaker 4: Okay, yeah, you're horrible, you know, for me as and
• 24:21
Speaker 4: having a receiver, that receiver's got to be able to
• 24:24
Speaker 4: be willing to want to get hit or knows he's
• 24:26
Speaker 4: gonna get hit and he's okay, or and or hit me.
• 24:30
Speaker 8: Because I think the keywords are no fear, no fear period.
• 24:34
Speaker 4: You just have to you can't and you cannot have
• 24:40
  Speaker 4: I just can't.
• 24:40
Speaker 2: To me, boxing would be.
• 24:45
Speaker 4: The sport that you cannot run from, Like if you
• 24:48
Speaker 4: get in the ring, like I'm not putting on no gloves,
• 24:51
Speaker 4: you you can't. You can't put gloves on me and
• 24:54
Speaker 4: sit me on that chair and hit bail and think
• 24:56
  Speaker 4: I'm coming out.
• 24:57
Speaker 5: But but I think too, Like now I think what
• 24:59
Speaker 5: happened is now is that there's a lot of like
• 25:02
Speaker 5: branding around everybody. So now the conversation is like, Okay,
• 25:07
  Speaker 5: I can't afford to take that knockdown. I can't afford
• 25:11
Speaker 5: to take that knockout, because even if I win the fight,
• 25:15
Speaker 5: it could quote unquote hurt my brand. And I don't
• 25:18
Speaker 5: think that probably existed twenty five thirty years ago.
• 25:21
Speaker 2: It wasn't necessarily like that.
• 25:23
Speaker 5: It was just a Warriors type of sport, where now
• 25:25
  Speaker 5: it's like it's just a it's a sport.
• 25:28
Speaker 6: And that's why we don't see wars anymore.
• 25:30
Speaker 7: That's why we don't see That's how long has it
• 25:33
Speaker 7: been since you were jumping up at your TV, like
• 25:36
Speaker 7: right at the front of your TV, like, oh my god,
• 25:38
Speaker 7: oh my god, going crazy because the fight is so exciting.
• 25:42
Speaker 7: You know somebody's about to get knocked out, and then
• 25:44
Speaker 7: you don't know which one.
• 25:45
Speaker 4: Somebody and you don't know, you don't know, like for me,
• 25:48
  Speaker 4: I could be honest, I don't think I know in
• 25:52
  Speaker 4: the men's division, like I don't know who's the guy
• 25:55
Speaker 4: who's knocking everybody out, You know.
• 25:58
  Speaker 2: What I'm saying.
• 25:59
Speaker 6: Yeah, I think very retired.
• 26:01
Speaker 5: I feel fury and wilder, But I mean even that
• 26:04
Speaker 5: fight was a technical mess. But it was like and
• 26:07
Speaker 5: I'm talking the first one, not the whatever the second
• 26:10
Speaker 5: and third one, but the first one was it has
• 26:13
Speaker 5: semblance of that, but that was probably the last ones
• 26:15
Speaker 5: I saw that was really like a back and forth.
• 26:18
Speaker 7: That was a great heavyweight fight. I mean they were
• 26:20
Speaker 7: both going at it. But yeah, I mean, we just
• 26:23
Speaker 7: don't have that warrior mentality. We have a lot of
• 26:27
Speaker 7: people talking to a lot of people selling their brand,
• 26:29
Speaker 7: a lot of people talking social media crap, but no
• 26:33
Speaker 7: one's producing when they get in the ring.
• 26:35
  Speaker 6: And that's why I as a.
• 26:36
Speaker 7: Promoter, I just want to find that old school dude
• 26:38
Speaker 7: that wants to train his butt off and go out
• 26:40
Speaker 7: there and just fight.
• 26:42
Speaker 6: I mean, put on a show for the fans, knock
• 26:45
Speaker 6: people out. And I have it.
• 26:47
Speaker 7: Victor Hernandez. He's a little one twenty six pounder. He
• 26:51
Speaker 7: likes to knock people out and he does a little
• 26:52
  Speaker 7: shimmy right on.
• 26:53
Speaker 6: Top of him, like at least of my wife. She
• 26:57
Speaker 6: manages him and she's like, he needs to stop doing that.
• 26:59
Speaker 7: I'm like, absolutely knocked because everybody leaves here, they either
• 27:04
Speaker 7: love him or hating him, it doesn't matter, but they're
• 27:06
Speaker 7: going to buy a ticket to see him fight again exactly.
• 27:08
Speaker 5: And I had to shout out Tang Davis too. I
• 27:11
Speaker 5: think he has that what I mean, his shots are
• 27:13
Speaker 5: devastating to be what.
• 27:15
Speaker 7: One he He is one of those guys that you
• 27:19
Speaker 7: sit there, you sit there and you see him getting
• 27:21
Speaker 7: out box and you see him losing, and you see
• 27:22
Speaker 7: him but you know.
• 27:25
Speaker 9: At one just takes one, just takes one.
• 27:28
Speaker 8: And I think technically sounds sorry you get ready ahead?
• 27:31
  Speaker 9: Okay.
• 27:31
Speaker 8: So, so Christy, you're talking about putting yourself out there
• 27:34
Speaker 8: to get, you know, possibly knocked out, in order to
• 27:36
Speaker 8: knock someone out. So I'm going to take you back
• 27:37
Speaker 8: to August twenty third, two thousand and three when you
• 27:41
Speaker 8: fought Layla Ali and so that strategy didn't work quite
• 27:45
Speaker 8: as well that fight, correct, because I think you guys
• 27:49
Speaker 8: went four rounds and.
• 27:50
Speaker 9: She she knocked you out. Did you did you ever
• 27:53
Speaker 9: see I took a knee? You took a knee?
• 27:56
  Speaker 6: Difference?
• 28:00
  Speaker 5: Right?
• 28:04
Speaker 9: Is that a fight that you have ever regretted taking on?
• 28:07
  Speaker 5: Is that?
• 28:08
  Speaker 2: No?
• 28:09
Speaker 9: Not, even with the outcome the way it was, you
• 28:10
Speaker 9: were good with it.
• 28:11
Speaker 7: Yeah. I just wish I could do it again because
• 28:13
Speaker 7: I feel like, I really really feel like it was
• 28:17
Speaker 7: whomever hit who first, and she hit me first on
• 28:20
Speaker 7: that night. I feel like we would have had you know,
• 28:22
Speaker 7: if we would have done it again, I still had
• 28:24
  Speaker 7: a chance.
• 28:26
Speaker 6: She's big, jumped up a big one pounds right.
• 28:31
Speaker 7: Oh yeah, I went from I was fighting at one
• 28:33
Speaker 7: forty two three and then I weighed one sixty two,
• 28:37
Speaker 7: which I really lot. I weighed with fatigues on in,
• 28:42
Speaker 7: quarters in my pockets, army boots, the whole thing.
• 28:44
Speaker 6: I weighed one forty seven.
• 28:45
Speaker 5: But even And that's one thing I always wondered. I
• 28:47
Speaker 5: always wanted to ask a professional boxer because I know
• 28:50
Speaker 5: one of my favorite boxer was Roy Jones Junior. I
• 28:53
Speaker 5: love Roy Jones Jr. But he lost himself when he
• 28:57
Speaker 5: ganged all the weight to move up the heavyweight. Then
• 28:59
Speaker 5: he tried to go back down the well to weight.
• 29:01
Speaker 5: So physically, when you are going from like a basically
• 29:05
Speaker 5: a fifteen to twenty pound difference, how did that? Were
• 29:08
Speaker 5: you sluggage in the fight? Like, how would you like,
• 29:12
Speaker 5: how would you assess your physicality during the fight?
• 29:14
Speaker 6: But I really didn't gain the weight. I still was
• 29:16
  Speaker 6: one forty seven.
• 29:17
Speaker 2: Oh you didn't gain it at all?
• 29:18
Speaker 7: No? No, I yea with army fatigues on, boots and
• 29:24
Speaker 7: quarters in my pockets.
• 29:25
Speaker 2: So you were twenty pounds lighter.
• 29:28
Speaker 7: Okay, that's tough, tough, but I still believed in my
• 29:32
Speaker 7: punching power, and I believe that if I hit it
• 29:34
Speaker 7: on the chin and I thought I would, you know
• 29:37
Speaker 7: that I would, I would win.
• 29:39
Speaker 4: And it is when you when you when you talk
• 29:43
Speaker 4: about that, when you're spilling that out to us, is
• 29:46
Speaker 4: there something in your mind that says, like I wish
• 29:49
Speaker 4: I could have rethought that and done it differently, Like
• 29:54
Speaker 4: would you have wanted to maybe gain weight or any
• 29:58
  Speaker 4: of that.
• 29:58
Speaker 7: No, but I really I I really really thought that Layla,
• 30:01
Speaker 7: because she's so big and she's so tall, that she
• 30:04
Speaker 7: was gonna come out because she never came out and
• 30:05
Speaker 7: like jumped on an opponent. So I really thought she's
• 30:08
Speaker 7: gonna use her size, she's gonna jab me. She we're
• 30:10
Speaker 7: gonna we're gonna like work into this ten round fight.
• 30:13
Speaker 7: That's not what happened. She came right out, jumped on me,
• 30:15
Speaker 7: hit me really good on top of my head with
• 30:17
  Speaker 7: the right hand.
• 30:18
Speaker 6: First round. I was done. She just didn't know I
• 30:22
  Speaker 6: was done.
• 30:23
Speaker 7: I thought I was sideways and I asked Jim in
• 30:25
Speaker 7: my corner, I'm like, am I walking sideways?
• 30:27
Speaker 6: And he said, oh, no, you're fine, You're fine. Well, yeah, no,
• 30:31
  Speaker 6: I I was done.
• 30:32
Speaker 7: First round wow, and I kept fighting, you know, thinking
• 30:35
Speaker 7: it was gonna come back.
• 30:36
  Speaker 6: I would get back, but I didn't.

Speaker 3: proudly presented by Attorney Frank Walker, Real Talk, real experience,
• 31:56
Speaker 3: Real results, Frank Walker Law dot Com. Let that converse
• 32:00
  Speaker 3: should't begin on Let's talk.
• 32:03
Speaker 4: Okay, so training, tell me a little bit about what
• 32:07
Speaker 4: it took. Let's just say for a huge fight that
• 32:11
Speaker 4: you get you're getting ready to fight, how long? And
• 32:16
Speaker 4: somewhat of an idea of what you would put yourself through,
• 32:20
Speaker 4: not just the boxing piece of it, but like whether
• 32:22
Speaker 4: it be running whatever that is, what what commitment did
• 32:26
Speaker 4: you have to put in?
• 32:28
Speaker 2: Food wise, all that kind of stuff.
• 32:31
Speaker 7: So food wise is probably the hardest thing because I
• 32:33
  Speaker 7: love chocolate.
• 32:38
Speaker 6: And I love Mexican food, So it was it was hard,
• 32:43
Speaker 6: but yeah, no, I got up every morning early.
• 32:45
Speaker 7: I ran three three and a half miles because Angelo
• 32:48
Speaker 7: Dundee said, you're not a runner, you know you're three miles.
• 32:51
Speaker 6: That's what Ali did.
• 32:52
Speaker 7: So I figured if the greatest did it, I'll be okay.
• 32:55
Speaker 7: So my little track was three point two actually, and
• 32:58
Speaker 7: then I would do sprints and then I would go
• 33:00
Speaker 7: to the gym and work about somewhere between twenty and
• 33:03
Speaker 7: thirty rounds. That was hand pads, heavy bag, shadow boxing, jumping, rope, speedback,
• 33:08
Speaker 7: all those things, and then I would go back to
• 33:10
Speaker 7: the gym inspar like three days a week. So you know,
• 33:15
Speaker 7: it was just boxing boxing. I watched fights, I watched
• 33:17
Speaker 7: my opponent. It was one hundred percent. My focus was
• 33:21
  Speaker 7: on boxing, So.
• 33:22
Speaker 4: There wasn't much time for any any like. So when
• 33:24
Speaker 4: you were off, you were probably more so watching.
• 33:28
  Speaker 6: I was never off, I really wasn't.
• 33:30
Speaker 7: I just because Donkey could call me anytime, and when
• 33:34
Speaker 7: he called, I was. Actually one time I was home
• 33:37
Speaker 7: at Christmas here in West Virginia and he called me
• 33:40
Speaker 7: on Christmas Day and told me I was going to
• 33:41
Speaker 7: fight January twelfth or fourteenth. So I wow, got in
• 33:46
Speaker 7: the car and drove back to Florida to be ready
• 33:49
  Speaker 7: for the fight.
• 33:50
Speaker 6: The good thing was I was running, I was in shape.
• 33:53
Speaker 2: So because you were, you were still doing all your stuff.
• 33:56
Speaker 7: Always ready, Because how am I going to tell don King, no,
• 33:59
  Speaker 7: I'm not ready.
• 34:00
Speaker 6: Because you mightn't do that call again.
• 34:02
Speaker 7: Right, So that's one thing I tell my guys, I'm like,
• 34:05
Speaker 7: you have to always be ready because some major promoter
• 34:08
Speaker 7: might call me and say, hey, we need one hundred
• 34:10
Speaker 7: and thirty pounder to fight so and so because some
• 34:14
  Speaker 7: just fell out.
• 34:16
Speaker 6: Be ready, be ready. You have to be ready. You're
• 34:18
Speaker 6: a professional fighter. That means that's your job. Be ready
• 34:21
Speaker 6: all the time. You have to go to work every day,
• 34:23
Speaker 6: whatever you do. Be ready.
• 34:25
Speaker 5: So coming from like I said, the story boxing career
• 34:30
Speaker 5: and now you are a promoter, So walk us through
• 34:33
Speaker 5: that steps like how did you get involved in promotions
• 34:35
Speaker 5: and kind of what are you looking forward to on
• 34:37
  Speaker 5: that end?
• 34:38
Speaker 6: So I kept trying to find a way to fit
• 34:41
Speaker 6: into boxing and what am I going to do? My
• 34:42
Speaker 6: career is over. I tried training fighters. No one wants
• 34:47
Speaker 6: to work hard enough coaching. Yeah, that wasn't for me.
• 34:55
Speaker 6: For me, let me, let me get with the promotion.
• 34:58
Speaker 7: And my goal is to be on somebody's ride that
• 35:01
Speaker 7: gets to put one of those title belts around their waist,
• 35:04
Speaker 7: because I know how excited.
• 35:05
Speaker 6: That was for me and how I felt so proud, and.
• 35:08
Speaker 7: So I would be so proud to help somebody get
• 35:11
Speaker 7: that title and put that around the waist.
• 35:13
Speaker 4: Do you find it hard to find the person that
• 35:17
Speaker 4: matches up with what you want to be able to
• 35:21
Speaker 4: give because and Hollins was talking about coaching, like because
• 35:25
Speaker 4: I think players who played and was committed to it
• 35:29
Speaker 4: to the game. Today, it's hard to coach because you
• 35:33
Speaker 4: don't you don't feel like you're getting from your players
• 35:36
Speaker 4: that the commitment that.
• 35:39
Speaker 2: That you that you feel you want to put in.
• 35:41
Speaker 7: So you want back what you gave and and and
• 35:47
Speaker 7: these young guys don't want to give back.
• 35:49
Speaker 6: They don't want to work that hard.
• 35:51
Speaker 7: I actually had a fighter here that was from from Charleston,
• 35:54
  Speaker 7: Anthony Sevilla.
• 35:57
  Speaker 6: On his behalf.
• 35:58
Speaker 7: He called me once and he said, I have an
• 36:00
Speaker 7: opportunity to go to fire fighting school and get a
• 36:04
Speaker 7: job at the fire department. And I told him, I said, look, Anthony,
• 36:07
Speaker 7: you could break your hand tomorrow in the boxing gym
• 36:11
Speaker 7: and never be able to fight again.
• 36:12
Speaker 6: Go do that. And he did, and so that's his career.
• 36:16
Speaker 7: But I was so excited about Oh, I have this
• 36:18
Speaker 7: West Virginia fighter. I had him wearing blue and gold
• 36:20
Speaker 7: gloves coming after the country Roads.
• 36:23
  Speaker 2: Oh.
• 36:24
  Speaker 6: I was excited.
• 36:25
Speaker 7: But that didn't work out. But yeah, that's one of
• 36:28
Speaker 7: the things I want from my fighters. I want to
• 36:31
Speaker 7: feel like they're working as hard as I work and
• 36:33
Speaker 7: put in as much as I did and love it.
• 36:36
Speaker 7: You have to love it because normal people do not
• 36:39
Speaker 7: get hit in the head for a living.
• 36:40
Speaker 5: But I think that's sort of the missing link. I
• 36:45
Speaker 5: think that you can have all the talent, you can
• 36:47
Speaker 5: have ability, you can really have everything, but in not
• 36:51
Speaker 5: just well particularly boxing, but any combat sport, any you know,
• 36:55
Speaker 5: collision sport, you really really really.
• 36:58
Speaker 2: Have to love it.
• 36:59
Speaker 5: And I think that's what's separates those professionals from amateurs,
• 37:03
Speaker 5: those who are okay good from great. You have to
• 37:07
Speaker 5: like love it. You have to be in love with it.
• 37:10
Speaker 5: Not only you know just what happens on fight night,
• 37:12
Speaker 5: but you have to be in love with probably the
• 37:14
Speaker 5: whole process of it.
• 37:15
Speaker 7: Absolutely, And that's the You're so right though about like
• 37:19
Speaker 7: social media and all this stuff, the branding, it's just taken.
• 37:22
Speaker 6: I feel like now we have fighters that that's.
• 37:25
Speaker 7: All they're worried about is their brand and their social
• 37:28
Speaker 7: media accounts on how many followers they have, and they
• 37:31
Speaker 7: forget to go to the gym and learn the basics
• 37:34
Speaker 7: and to learn how to be a fighter. But they're
• 37:38
Speaker 7: using boxing to promote themselves. I mean, Jake Paul's making
• 37:43
Speaker 7: us a lot of money.
• 37:45
Speaker 4: And promoting yourself doesn't necessarily whether and I'm going to
• 37:49
Speaker 4: use football promoting yourself, you know, all over Facebook, all
• 37:53
  Speaker 4: social media.
• 37:54
Speaker 2: It doesn't make you a great player.
• 37:56
Speaker 4: Just because you say that, you know you you had
• 38:00
Speaker 4: three sacks in a game. That doesn't qualify you as
• 38:05
Speaker 4: being a great player, or even a great defensive lineman
• 38:08
  Speaker 4: for that matter.
• 38:08
Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying.
• 38:09
Speaker 4: But I think they think if they get a thousand views,
• 38:15
  Speaker 4: they're good.
• 38:17
  Speaker 2: That's all I need.
• 38:18
Speaker 8: Yes, what is a whole different world out there now,
• 38:21
Speaker 8: isn't it all of us? It's kind of left me.
• 38:24
Speaker 8: But anyway, so Christy, I'm going to go back a
• 38:26
Speaker 8: little bit. My husband and I I think we've all
• 38:28
Speaker 8: alluded to watching your movie Deal with the Devil, and
• 38:32
Speaker 8: and you know, we knew about all your great accomplishments
• 38:35
Speaker 8: in boxing and all the things that you did, you know,
• 38:39
Speaker 8: in your past career, but we did not have the
• 38:42
Speaker 8: idea of the dark times you endured during that period
• 38:47
  Speaker 8: as well.
• 38:48
  Speaker 9: Was that film.
• 38:49
Speaker 8: Difficult for you to make because of that? Because of
• 38:53
Speaker 8: the history of the dark times with your ex husband.
• 38:56
Speaker 6: I think it was very important for me to to do.
• 39:01
Speaker 7: As I said, I'm pretty sure. I said this in
• 39:03
Speaker 7: the documentary. I haven't watched it for a while, but
• 39:05
Speaker 7: I made a deal with God. Went from my hospital
• 39:08
Speaker 7: bed and I, you know, God, if you'll just let
• 39:10
Speaker 7: me live, I promise you I'll help somebody.
• 39:13
  Speaker 6: I'll help one.
• 39:14
Speaker 7: Person before I leave this earth not have to walk
• 39:16
Speaker 7: through that same path that I walked. And then, as
• 39:20
Speaker 7: I say, the arrogant me came on board and said, no, no, no,
• 39:23
Speaker 7: you need to help somebody every day. And that's why
• 39:26
Speaker 7: I'm here with you guys. You know, we're going to
• 39:27
Speaker 7: talk about domestic bolence a little bit and and hopefully
• 39:31
Speaker 7: somebody hears or maybe maybe they just hear about the
• 39:35
Speaker 7: boxing story and that'll give them strength at hope if
• 39:38
Speaker 7: she can do boxing, because there was no path before.
• 39:40
Speaker 6: There was no one for me to follow, no path.
• 39:42
Speaker 7: Before, right, and I just I believe that I could
• 39:47
Speaker 7: get it done, and so hopefully people can that are
• 39:51
Speaker 7: in a tough situation with domestic ballence. You can say, wow,
• 39:54
Speaker 7: if she did it, and I'm special about her, she says,
• 39:57
Speaker 7: a coal miner's daughter from southern West Virginia.
• 40:00
Speaker 6: I can do it. And so that was my deal
• 40:02
  Speaker 6: with God.
• 40:04
Speaker 4: Yeah, and you you should be in you should you
• 40:09
Speaker 4: should come into the locker room before a football game
• 40:14
Speaker 4: and and and tell that story. And and I mean
• 40:18
Speaker 4: that to me, that's something because you're giving away something
• 40:22
Speaker 4: that is personal, private, but you make it seem so
• 40:26
Speaker 4: inspirational as if it didn't touch you. But here, look,
• 40:33
Speaker 4: everybody else, this is how you can get better. And
• 40:37
  Speaker 4: I don't know if I've I don't know if I've
• 40:39
Speaker 4: ever heard you know, I'm gonna give you this, this problem.
• 40:42
  Speaker 4: I don't know if I've ever heard anybody who's been
• 40:45
Speaker 4: an athlete in any sport at any time to find
• 40:49
Speaker 4: that a negative part of your life and make it
• 40:54
Speaker 4: into something positive for everybody else.
• 40:57
  Speaker 2: I don't know if I've ever if somebody's.
• 41:00
Speaker 4: Ever hit me with that, and it and I mean
• 41:04
Speaker 4: it hits me here in the gut, and I'm like,
• 41:06
Speaker 4: you know, it's like that's special.
• 41:08
  Speaker 6: Thank you.
• 41:09
Speaker 7: But God left me here for a reason. I mean,
• 41:11
Speaker 7: I should not be here. This man stabbed me, punctured
• 41:14
Speaker 7: my lung, shot me, missed my heart by two inches.
• 41:18
Speaker 6: I should not be here. But God has a.
• 41:20
Speaker 7: Bigger plan for me, and that's being here with you guys.
• 41:24
Speaker 7: You know we're going to talk about domestic violence. We're
• 41:25
Speaker 7: going to talk about life. We're going to talk about
• 41:27
Speaker 7: doing it, doing it, and whatever doing it is. It
• 41:32
Speaker 7: can be numerous things. It could be whatever's happening in
• 41:35
Speaker 7: your life. You know, it doesn't matter. We can come,
• 41:38
Speaker 7: we can we could cross over any bridge we need to.
• 41:40
Speaker 9: I just needed to follow aud and my life.
• 41:44
Speaker 8: Catch you get this laundry done, Lisa.
• 41:49
Speaker 6: You know what I'm like, so frustrated, like and for
• 41:53
Speaker 6: you kidding me? Why do you dust?
• 41:54
Speaker 7: Because it just comes right back by the time you
• 41:57
Speaker 7: get to the end of the room, there's dust where
• 41:59
  Speaker 7: you just let.
• 42:02
Speaker 5: So and again to that point, you walk so many paths,
• 42:06
Speaker 5: and you've done so without sort of a path finder,
• 42:10
  Speaker 5: right you.
• 42:11
Speaker 2: You sort of set these paths.
• 42:13
Speaker 5: And like I said, coming out of southern West Virginia
• 42:17
Speaker 5: and rising and not only riding to the top, but
• 42:20
Speaker 5: going through the adversity and still coming out on the
• 42:23
Speaker 5: other side. Because again I don't I follow boxing pretty closely.
• 42:26
Speaker 5: I don't know any too many female promoters at this
• 42:29
Speaker 5: point either, So that's another path So and I know
• 42:33
Speaker 5: Coach Lee talks about it all the time. Do you
• 42:35
Speaker 5: feel like, just like West Virginia, Like, do you feel
• 42:40
Speaker 5: like sometimes it's like, man, they don't know enough of
• 42:43
Speaker 5: my story. It's like, do you feel like it's hard
• 42:45
Speaker 5: to get it out here? Sometimes like where they should
• 42:48
  Speaker 5: shouldn't know this because I like I said, I knew,
• 42:52
  Speaker 5: but I didn't know.
• 42:55
Speaker 2: Before you go. I know he's going jump.
• 42:57
Speaker 4: Yes, let me let me just help before you say it,
• 43:01
Speaker 4: so that if anybody who's listening to the show.
• 43:04
Speaker 2: I said it first. Okay.
• 43:06
Speaker 4: I think West Virginia has done a super poor job
• 43:11
Speaker 4: on promoting its athletes.
• 43:14
  Speaker 2: It's it's people who have.
• 43:18
Speaker 4: Stood up done things and we just don't want to
• 43:22
Speaker 4: say it's like we forget them, like we let them
• 43:25
Speaker 4: go without any story.
• 43:28
Speaker 2: How do you have a movie?
• 43:30
Speaker 4: Okay? How do you have a movie and there are
• 43:33
Speaker 4: kids who still don't know her name? How is that possible?
• 43:38
Speaker 4: Whose fault is that? I mean, that's all media. There's
• 43:43
Speaker 4: no reason. I'm telling you. I am so happy that
• 43:47
Speaker 4: you're here. I'm like, this is like Christmas for me, Okay, And.
• 43:54
  Speaker 2: It bothers me.
• 43:55
Speaker 4: I hate that you brought it up, but I'm glad
• 43:57
Speaker 4: that you did it because because it it really bothers
• 44:01
Speaker 4: me to think that there's a possibility that without you
• 44:07
Speaker 4: being on the show. Somebody doesn't know you, somebody missed you,
• 44:11
Speaker 4: somebody didn't see your show.
• 44:13
Speaker 2: That makes no sense to me, not in West Virginia.
• 44:16
Speaker 4: Not how huge you are to me in my mind
• 44:19
Speaker 4: in West Virginia, what you've done for West Virginia. You
• 44:23
Speaker 4: you carried that name every fight.
• 44:30
Speaker 7: I came out to loret Land. I actually went to
• 44:32
Speaker 7: see Loretta Land and asked her. I got her blessing
• 44:35
Speaker 7: to be the coal miner's daughter. So Jim Martin would
• 44:41
Speaker 7: always tell me West Virginia doesn't support you, and I
• 44:43
Speaker 7: would fight him because I didn't want to think.
• 44:47
Speaker 6: That West Virginia didn't support me.
• 44:49
Speaker 7: But I and it's a little bit old school, right,
• 44:52
Speaker 7: It's still old It was in the nineties especially, and
• 44:55
Speaker 7: so there was less people open up to women's boxing
• 45:00
Speaker 7: because I was just a woman fighter. If I had
• 45:02
Speaker 7: been a man fighter coming from West Virginia, I think
• 45:06
Speaker 7: it would have got a lot more support.
• 45:09
Speaker 4: Well, I you know, as as a football player, it
• 45:12
Speaker 4: didn't work for me, you know what I'm saying, Like
• 45:15
  Speaker 4: I don't I truly don't feel like there was that
• 45:19
Speaker 4: there was that I got any of enough attention to
• 45:23
Speaker 4: the career that I had sounds arrogant, but with the
• 45:26
Speaker 4: career that I had, I don't feel like the media
• 45:29
Speaker 4: covered me to a point that I could be an
• 45:32
Speaker 4: inspiration to another kid, not for me, but just so
• 45:35
Speaker 4: that another kid could say, oh, well, Carl Lee, he
• 45:39
Speaker 4: came from Old spring Hill down on Greenway.
• 45:42
Speaker 2: He if he could make it, I could make it.
• 45:44
Speaker 4: And to me, my whole, my whole frustration with that
• 45:48
Speaker 4: is just because we're not passing on We're not we're
• 45:51
Speaker 4: not being able to pass on our our skill set,
• 45:57
Speaker 4: our success two kids who may want to dream.
• 46:02
Speaker 5: The same dreams that we dream. And I think it's
• 46:06
Speaker 5: to that point, but I think there's a special thing
• 46:09
Speaker 5: about coming from West Virginia and you being able to
• 46:13
Speaker 5: make it to that sort of limelight where because a
• 46:16
Speaker 5: lot of times here the mentality can be smaller and
• 46:20
Speaker 5: you don't really think that big, you don't really dream
• 46:23
Speaker 5: that big, and then when you have somebody who NFL
• 46:26
Speaker 5: pro bo boxing champion, I think it really adds value
• 46:31
Speaker 5: to those kids to say, hey, yeah, I'm from this
• 46:33
Speaker 5: small town, I'm from this small neighborhood, but I can
• 46:36
Speaker 5: do a big world things. And I think part of
• 46:39
Speaker 5: our mission on this show is to really highlight that.
• 46:42
Speaker 5: Like we had Kurt Warner on the other day, and
• 46:44
Speaker 5: you know what I'm saying, So we want to really
• 46:46
Speaker 5: give a voice to those West Virginians who really not
• 46:49
Speaker 5: only impacted maybe their communities, but impacted their sport, impacted.
• 46:54
Speaker 2: The world through their sport.
• 46:56
Speaker 4: Yeah, and you know, and talking about Kurt, you know,
• 47:02
Speaker 4: he's the best, He's the best back in the nation.
• 47:04
Speaker 4: He comes out of high school as the best back
• 47:06
Speaker 4: of the nation out of Pineville, and you've let him
• 47:12
Speaker 4: just fall by the wayside. You don't want to know
• 47:15
Speaker 4: anything about his career. Nobody wants to call him and say, hey,
• 47:18
Speaker 4: you know, I like to do an interview on you
• 47:20
Speaker 4: and talk about you know, your your career. Well we did, yeah,
• 47:23
  Speaker 4: we did.
• 47:25
Speaker 6: At high school. So he ran lots of touch.
• 47:33
Speaker 4: And here's I played against I played with him in
• 47:35
Speaker 4: the North South game, and me and a buddy of mine,
• 47:39
Speaker 4: we couldn't wait and I was I told him this story.
• 47:41
Speaker 4: We couldn't wait to he because he he was getting
• 47:43
Speaker 4: the O. J. Simpson Award, which should have been enough
• 47:45
Speaker 4: for us, but we were like, we I want to
• 47:47
Speaker 4: see how good he is, right, So we we waited
• 47:49
Speaker 4: on him we helped him with his bags and we're like, okay,
• 47:53
Speaker 4: we had to wait and see how it gets on
• 47:55
Speaker 4: the field. And as soon as he gets on the field,
• 47:59
Speaker 4: we were like, oh, shoot, yeah.
• 48:03
  Speaker 2: He's he's definitely else.
• 48:05
  Speaker 8: Yeah.
• 48:06
Speaker 4: And and and to me, I feel like you're in
• 48:10
Speaker 4: that You're in that situation where you've done something so amazing,
• 48:17
Speaker 4: so great, so unbelievable, and and West Virginia is not
• 48:25
  Speaker 4: celebrating that.
• 48:26
Speaker 2: Well, we're celebrating here. Yeah, we are definitely.
• 48:28
Speaker 5: So just before you go, like, tell us just about
• 48:32
Speaker 5: your fighters, about your promotion, like what do you have
• 48:35
  Speaker 5: coming up?
• 48:36
Speaker 2: And and a new book? You got a new book too.
• 48:38
Speaker 7: So I have a book that was written by Ron Borges,
• 48:40
Speaker 7: who you guys might know from the from He wrote
• 48:43
Speaker 7: Boston Globe all the time, covered football, baseball, everything.
• 48:49
Speaker 6: He's a Hall of Famer actually, Ron Borges.
• 48:51
Speaker 7: So we have the book out, We have the Netflix documentary,
• 48:54
Speaker 7: have a movie coming out with Sidney Sweeney playing me Swim, which.
• 48:58
Speaker 6: Is gonna be cool. And I am a promoter.
• 49:03
Speaker 7: So July eighteenth, I will be promoting a show from
• 49:05
Speaker 7: Pachanga which is Tamecula California Casino Hotel, Pretty exciting. It's
• 49:10
Speaker 7: gonna be on millions dot co if anybody wants to
• 49:13
Speaker 7: watch that pay per view. And then we have a
• 49:15
Speaker 7: fight coming up at the minor league baseball field.
• 49:19
  Speaker 6: The Chihuahuas is.
• 49:21
Speaker 7: In Elfaso, so we have that coming up in October
• 49:25
  Speaker 7: October fourth.
• 49:26
Speaker 6: This is really important to me.
• 49:27
Speaker 7: October fourth in altamat Springs, Florida, I'm going to be
• 49:30
Speaker 7: doing a black tie event for domestic raising money for
• 49:32
  Speaker 7: domestic violence awareness.
• 49:34
Speaker 6: So that's like, that's the number one thing in my brain.
• 49:37
Speaker 6: I want to promote that show.
• 49:40
Speaker 7: And then we have amateur tournament in Tulsa that's September.
• 49:44
Speaker 5: Eleventh, and where can people find you get updates about
• 49:47
Speaker 5: all the stuff you have going.
• 49:49
Speaker 6: On, Christy Martin dot net.
• 49:50
Speaker 7: And then I do speaking stuff as well, so I
• 49:53
Speaker 7: know my guy's gonna fuss at me if I don't throw.
• 49:55
  Speaker 6: That out there.
• 49:56
Speaker 7: I speak at prisons, at high schools, domestic violence centers,
• 50:00
Speaker 7: wherever anybody wants to talk about domestic balance. Will allow
• 50:02
Speaker 7: me to talk about the domestic balance awareness. I'm all in
• 50:06
Speaker 7: one under percents and I always want to help West Virginia,
• 50:09
Speaker 7: So anything I can do to.
• 50:11
Speaker 6: Give back to my state. I want to do that.
• 50:13
  Speaker 9: She's also a dog lover.
• 50:18
Speaker 8: You'll see a picture of champ on my on my
• 50:21
  Speaker 8: Facebook page later.
• 50:22
Speaker 2: So I love it all right, Well, anybody have anything else?
• 50:26
Speaker 2: Thank you so much, Thank you here. Thank you for
• 50:29
  Speaker 2: all you represent.
• 50:30
Speaker 5: Like I said, when I saw the story and really
• 50:34
Speaker 5: really learned what it was about. Not only like I said,
• 50:36
Speaker 5: you just like to me just being that, like I said,
• 50:39
Speaker 5: that setting that path to me is just so huge
• 50:43
Speaker 5: and coming from where you're coming from and and doing
• 50:45
Speaker 5: all the things that you're doing. So I really appreciate you,
• 50:48
Speaker 5: and thank you for everything.
• 50:50
  Speaker 6: Thank you.
• 50:50
Speaker 2: I appreciate you. Coming on, so come back.
• 50:55
Speaker 6: When the movie comes out. Let's do it.
• 50:58
Speaker 4: We're holding it that way absolutely all right, all right,
• 51:01
Speaker 4: ladies and gentlemen, we're gonna get out of here and uh,
• 51:04
Speaker 4: we'll see you again.
