- 0:00It's our favorite time of the year.
- 0:01You and I are both big NFL fans. The NFL playoffs are here this
- 0:04coming week. I won't ask you for predictions
- 0:06or anything, we'll talk about it after it happens, but just going
- 0:08to give me your thoughts on the season heading into the
- 0:12playoffs. Where, where is your head at for
- 0:15what the main storylines are? What team or are you most
- 0:19looking forward to seeing? What, what?
- 0:21Where do you see the NFL at this point?
- 0:23Well, I mean, the playoffs come down to what they almost always
- 0:26come down to, which is quarterback play, with the one
- 0:30wild exception of Joe Burrow, who had like a season for the
- 0:34ages in Cincinnati and they're going to miss the playoffs
- 0:37because they dug themselves a four and eight hole.
- 0:39But with that one exception is you go through the quarterbacks
- 0:41on these rosters of these playoff teams, Oh, man, they're
- 0:45just, they're all, they're all good.
- 0:47Of course, the best ones are there.
- 0:48And then you kind of go down the list.
- 0:50A lot of veterans like Stafford and Russell Wilson who have done
- 0:53it, you know, in the past won Super Bowls, things like that.
- 0:57I'm locked into the NFL. You and I talked a little about
- 1:00about college over the break and it's really hard for me to
- 1:04watch. So thank God the NFL has been
- 1:06there. I think this last weekend was
- 1:08kind of anticlimactic 'cause there wasn't too many things on
- 1:11the line, but how, how cool is it that so few games matter and
- 1:17you're still locked in because Mike Evans is getting $3,000,000
- 1:20for breaking the yards record? And then you got the Lions and
- 1:23Vikings on Sunday night, which didn't turn out to be a great
- 1:26game, but certainly that was a huge match up for home field in
- 1:29the NFC, the NFL playoffs. There's nothing better to me.
- 1:33Those are the best sports games to me that are played because of
- 1:39the stakes, because the NB as great.
- 1:41Major League Baseball is great, but just the stakes of winner go
- 1:45home in the NFL playoffs in one game.
- 1:48It's just, you know, it's when legends are made.
- 1:51Man, it's so cool. And the drama and the storylines
- 1:54and it can can they can anyone finally get over the hump of Pat
- 1:58of of Mahomes and the and can Lamar Jackson finally
- 2:02breakthrough in the playoffs? Can Josh Allen finally leave
- 2:05Justin Herbert past them? Justin Herbert maybe as a as a
- 2:09never. Won a playoff game.
- 2:10And then in the NFC, you've got these these guys who were never
- 2:15thought of as elite quarterbacks but are now like Jared Goff and
- 2:19especially Goff and even Sam Arnold played at elite levels
- 2:22this year. Now, well, you know, like Goff
- 2:25was a guy who was traded away because the Rams wanted to win a
- 2:28Super Bowl with a better quarterback.
- 2:30And they did, you know, they I don't think they regret it.
- 2:32They. Got no.
- 2:32That was a good. Trade, but look what Goff has
- 2:35become. So it just goes to show you two,
- 2:37you don't always have to get the franchise guy who's like a top
- 2:42ten pick or for, although I think golf was.
- 2:44Yeah, I was gonna say Darnold, Goff and Baker.
- 2:47Mayfield Baker. Mayfield was the number one
- 2:48pick. I think Goff was too, actually.
- 2:51Darnold was like #2? You don't have to get the guy
- 2:54who looks like the guy from the moment he steps on the field.
- 2:57Oh. There are other ways to find it,
- 3:00which gives hope to some of these teams 'cause there are
- 3:02only so many guys like Joe Burrow that you pick and they
- 3:06look like the guy from day one and then they are that guy year
- 3:09after year like that happens. And good for those teams that do
- 3:12it, but that's that's fairly rare that that happens.
- 3:15I think that's like that with most people.
- 3:18I mean, I don't know when your athletic prime was, dude, but I,
- 3:22I would take me no, Well, what I was going to say is for myself
- 3:27personally, at 30 years old compared to 22, I was much
- 3:31stronger physically. I was much more athletic.
- 3:34You're like, you're in your prime when you're 30.
- 3:37So this idea that people are just going to come in at age 22.
- 3:40And I know I, I, I'm not an elite athlete.
- 3:43These guys are elite athletes, but still people mature at all
- 3:46different times, especially playing court back.
- 3:48Like I look at a guy like Zach Wilson, for example, you know,
- 3:52he was a disaster in in New York, but I mean, he's 24.
- 3:57Like, you know, these guys, they have no time because there's too
- 4:01much at stake. You have to come in and perform
- 4:03right away. And the other thing is there's
- 4:0512 guys behind you that are almost as good as you, that want
- 4:09your spot. So that is the thing to perform
- 4:11at a high level immediately. But there are so many players
- 4:15that I, I, and this is kind of an old sports radio
- 4:18conversation, but there's so many people that are just put in
- 4:21terrible situations. Like the number one for me is
- 4:24always David Carr, who was the number one pick for the Houston
- 4:28Texans. He got sacked.
- 4:30I'd have to look up the numbers 5,000,000 times.
- 4:32I think that's accurate. Is something like that.
- 4:35I mean he probably was like would wake up with like in
- 4:38nightmares. Like he never had a chance to be
- 4:41good. Yeah.
- 4:43You know, so it's situational. Do you want to give a prediction
- 4:47entering the Playhouse? A Super Bowl prediction.
- 4:50I won't, but I will. I want to ask you a question.
- 4:53Why would anyone go against the Kansas City Chiefs?
- 4:57It's like people that used to not go with Tom Brady.
- 5:00I was always confused. I was like, based on what?
- 5:03Evidence I think with the Chiefs this year, the reason is because
- 5:06they have looked so ordinary. They they have not.
- 5:09They're not blowing teams out. Almost all of their wins were
- 5:12were one score wins. Some of them were fluky wins
- 5:15like blocked field goals or botched field goals.
- 5:18Or I mean, I think at one point it's, it may be more now, but I
- 5:21remember it. They had won fifteen straight
- 5:24games decided by 1 score, which is insane.
- 5:27That just doesn't happen. But I agree with you.
- 5:30It's not a fluke when it's that many in a row.
- 5:32It's because of the coach and the court back and the scheme
- 5:36and the defense and their defense is as good as it's been
- 5:39and during their championship runs.
- 5:41And they're not as explosive, obviously offensively, but I
- 5:44just trust in these games and you know these.
- 5:47And they're going to have the bye week to rest up.
- 5:50They're going to have home field advantage.
- 5:51Someone's going to have to beat them in Arrowhead.
- 5:53And look, Baltimore looks better than they have ever looked under
- 5:58Lamar. He looks.
- 5:59The Steelers. I mean, he's the only
- 6:01quarterback in NFL history to throw more than 40 touchdowns
- 6:04and fewer than 5 interceptions in the season.
- 6:06He's the only quarterback ever with 4000 passing yards and 900
- 6:10rushing yards in the season. He looks amazing right now,
- 6:13amazing all year. The defense of Baltimore, after
- 6:17they made that change, whatever they moved, I think what was it,
- 6:19Humphrey to safety? They look great.
- 6:22Yeah, they're offensive line Derrick Henry.
- 6:24Buffalo, right, And Dave, Derrick Henry and Buffalo, man.
- 6:27I don't. Josh Allen is not quite maybe
- 6:29Lamar's level, but damn close. And they're playing great.
- 6:34Their defense, everyone thought would fall off a Cliff and it
- 6:36didn't. But I just can't pick anybody
- 6:39else besides Kansas City. And so I'm going to pick the
- 6:41Chiefs, the AFC and in the NFC, man, how do you pick against
- 6:44Detroit? I mentioned Goff and but the
- 6:47other thing too is their defense.
- 6:49I thought when they lost Hutchinson, who's their stud
- 6:53pass rusher for the season, that that their own defense already
- 6:56was shaky and it was shaky for a while after that.
- 6:59But they righted the ship again in the last four or five weeks
- 7:02of the season defensively. And they just look like that
- 7:05team now like it. It feels like it's their time
- 7:09and it's Dan Campbell's time. And so I'm going to go with, I'm
- 7:11going to go with chalk, the two one seeds.
- 7:13Well, it's, it's kind of like to go with what you've seen.
- 7:18I know in the case of Detroit, you haven't since they haven't
- 7:21won a Super Bowl. Well, not the Super Bowl a
- 7:23championship since 1957. But I guess what I'm trying to
- 7:27say is it's it's a safe pick. I asked about the Chiefs
- 7:31specifically because as long as Mahomes plays, if I pick the
- 7:35Chiefs to go to or win the Super Bowl every year, as long as he
- 7:39plays, I feel like I got a 50% shot.
- 7:42Yeah, I think so. Let's talk about the Steelers
- 7:45real quick because we might not be able to talk about it much
- 7:47longer. Our Steelers started 10 and
- 7:49three look great, but soft schedule.
- 7:51Then the schedule got hard. Baltimore, Kansas City, Philly,
- 7:56and then, as you mentioned, on fire, Cincinnati team desperate
- 7:59for the playoffs. Steelers lose four in a row.
- 8:02They're 10:00 and 7:00. They go to Baltimore Saturday
- 8:05night where they are A10 point underdog against the Ravens.
- 8:09They split the season series. Baltimore convincingly won the
- 8:13most recent match up where again Lamar looked great.
- 8:16The Steelers played better against Cincinnati.
- 8:18So I'm I'm not going to give them no chance, but let's be
- 8:21honest, it's going to be tough and assume they lose, which is
- 8:25pretty safe assumption. So there you now you've lost
- 8:28five in a row. The Steelers have won one
- 8:32playoff, no playoff game since, what was it, 2016?
- 8:36Yeah. So we're, that's what, 8 years,
- 8:38people and Steeler fans, man. And I'm, I'm not obviously in
- 8:41that area anymore, but I know a lot of Steeler fans see them
- 8:44online. They want Tomlin gone, which to
- 8:47me again is crazy. Mike Tomlin has coached in the
- 8:53NFL eighteen seasons. He has had a losing record.
- 8:57Zero time. He has made the playoffs in
- 9:02those eighteen seasons on 12 occasions. 2/3 of the time, 11
- 9:08times. They've won 10 or more games.
- 9:11They have won a championship. They have been to two Super
- 9:15Bowls again. To be fair, that all happened.
- 9:17Those post season success happened in it in the first 4-5
- 9:21years of his reign. He is now 12 all time in wins in
- 9:28the National Football League with 183 victories.
- 9:33Almost all of the 11 coaches in front of him, with a few
- 9:36exceptions, either already are or will be in the Hall of Fame.
- 9:41No question, all of the coaches in front of him have coached
- 9:44more seasons than he did, most of them a lot more.
- 9:48Andy Reid is at 26 and counting. Bill Belichick, coach, 29.
- 9:53Papa Bear. George Paulus, who's ahead of
- 9:54him, Coach for 40 years again. Tomlin 18.
- 9:59Tomlin next year will pass Chuck Knox who is three wins ahead of
- 10:03him. He'll pass Dan Reeves who's
- 10:04seven wins ahead of him. And if he wins 10 games, he'll
- 10:07tie Chuck freaking Knoll for ninth all time on the wins list.
- 10:12Here's another thing people talk about the post season.
- 10:15I mentioned this list of all time great coaches that are
- 10:18ahead of him. Here's some of their playoff
- 10:20records. Don Shula who has the most wins
- 10:24all time was 19 and 17 in the playoffs around 500.
- 10:30Tom Landry of the Cowboys, 4th, 5th all time in wins.
- 10:33You know what his playoff record was?
- 10:3620 and 16. Curly Lambeau, 6th all time.
- 10:41Now that was before there were many right?
- 10:43Three and two all time in the playoffs.
- 10:45Same thing with Paul Brown coaching narrow where you didn't
- 10:47have as many playoff games. All time record 9:00 and 8:00.
- 10:50Next on the list is a gentleman named Marty Schottenheimer. 8
- 10:55ball time on the playoff list in the spot 5 and. 13 and not good.
- 11:01Dan Reeves, 11 and 9, and the man right in front of Tom and I
- 11:05mentioned Chuck Knox, is 7 and 10.
- 11:08Tomlin Tomlin's playoff record, by the way, career is 8 and 10.
- 11:11Again, just like most of those coaches ahead of him.
- 11:14Right around 500. The few exceptions we all know
- 11:17Belichick was a unworldly 31 and 13 in the playoffs with six
- 11:23championships, which is absurd, and Andy Reid 26 and 16 with
- 11:29three and counting. So those two guys are in a class
- 11:34by themselves. Like nobody does what they those
- 11:37two do. You can't compare anybody to
- 11:39what they've done the pussy. But man, this, this track record
- 11:42for Tomlin is incredible. Get it.
- 11:45Giving your team a chance every year there's some and getting
- 11:50them in the play offs 2 out of every three years.
- 11:53Does he have flaws as a coach? Sure.
- 11:55But that there's something to be said for that level of
- 11:57consistency and excellence. I think one of the important
- 12:01things to mention as you read out those numbers is that this
- 12:04is a salary cap sport where if you're bad, you get better
- 12:09players. Well, in theory, you get the
- 12:12opportunity to draft higher, which usually means you're going
- 12:15to get better players earlier on.
- 12:18And he still accomplished everything that you just said.
- 12:22I tell people all the time about being a Steelers fan.
- 12:25My favorite part about being a Steelers fan is I know that
- 12:29going into every year we have a chance, except for the three bad
- 12:35years with Cordell Stewart and Tommy Maddox, which, you know,
- 12:38whatever. But in our lifetimes, no, right
- 12:41in our lifetime. So I'm going to start when we
- 12:44are, you know, 10-11 years old where you can actually
- 12:47comprehend and understand sports.
- 12:49So this is going to go back 35 years.
- 12:51The Steelers have been good pretty much that entire time,
- 12:54except the three bad years. It's it's remarkable.
- 12:58And the, and the other thing I like about being the Steelers,
- 13:01Steelers fan is the ownership, because they don't act like
- 13:05Woody Johnson and the New York Jets.
- 13:07I don't understand how any person, any human being alive
- 13:11could be a Cleveland Browns fan. And I'm not saying that because
- 13:15they're a rival, because to be clear, they are not a rival of
- 13:19the Steelers. They're a joke.
- 13:22But the problem is not Cleveland or the city or the Browns is
- 13:25that they have terrible ownership that, you know, they
- 13:28make decisions on whims and like, you know, they never stick
- 13:32with the plan. And it just ends up being like a
- 13:34cycle of violence. I really love that there's no
- 13:42chance Tomlin is going anywhere because that would require him
- 13:45to be removed by ownership. And that's just simply not going
- 13:48to happen. Or, or a trade.
- 13:50And Adam Schefter said today that he thinks teams should call
- 13:54the Steelers just to check if the Steelers would trade him
- 13:57because he's under contract. As someone else on ESPN pointed
- 14:00out, if that were to happen, teams would fire their coaches.
- 14:03A lot of teams that that have coaches now that didn't already
- 14:05fire them a few days ago or earlier this season.
- 14:08I think, look, I want to be clear, I get frustrated at
- 14:11Tomlin for a few things. I think his clock management has
- 14:14been average at best and and in certain times poor.
- 14:19I think he he he's gotten a little better I think in recent
- 14:21years, but his clock management is, is not always as sharp as it
- 14:25should be. I think he's been way too slow
- 14:30to embrace analytics in that he's been too conservative,
- 14:33especially on things like 4th down calls.
- 14:35But again, to be fair to him, that started to change this
- 14:37year. The recent years I think he's
- 14:39been more aggressive and I think sometimes his game plan, he's so
- 14:43wedded to the idea that we have to be physical, we have to run
- 14:46the ball. If you look at the Steelers this
- 14:48season, I think they're tied for third and rush attempts, but
- 14:52they're in the bottom 10th of the bottom third of the league
- 14:56in efficiency yards per carry. So they're they're running into
- 15:01brick walls a lot of times and they keep doing it even though
- 15:03it's not efficient and they're actually having more success
- 15:06passing. So I think there is now look,
- 15:08Arthur Smith, the offense coordinator, he's got a role in
- 15:10that. But there are fair critiques of
- 15:12Tomlin for not having the breakthrough and the post season
- 15:16and not being as good of a coach as he could be.
- 15:19That's all fair, but that. But I think we overlook some of
- 15:22the other things that that's not all that coaching is.
- 15:25There's the organizing A-Team, keeping everybody rowing in the
- 15:29same direction even when you're going through a tough season,
- 15:31battling through adversity, as Tomlin says, smiling through
- 15:35adversity. Like he coached Antonio Brown
- 15:39and we didn't know he was insane.
- 15:41Like that in itself is a reason to retain him as coach.
- 15:45And one more point on on this, you talked about quarterback
- 15:49play and how look, anyone who watches the NFL in modern times
- 15:52knows it is more and more a quarterback league.
- 15:54And it's so hard to compete if you don't have at least an above
- 15:59average quarterback, if not elite.
- 16:02I would just say this. I know he hasn't won a playoff
- 16:04game in about what, 8 years? We're saying the last three
- 16:09years. Ben Roethlisberger is a great
- 16:10quarterback, a Hall of Fame quarterback.
- 16:13His last three years were not good because of because of
- 16:16injury and also because even though he he was still a pretty
- 16:21good quarterback. But teams quickly realized he
- 16:24just didn't have the arms for them anymore to Chuck the ball
- 16:26down. And he can't move.
- 16:28And he couldn't move. And so his last three years he
- 16:30was, he was better than still. That's what happens.
- 16:35When you're one of the greatest ever play.
- 16:37Right, but no longer elite. Then you spend 2 years trying to
- 16:41develop Kenny Pickett, taking a chance on him.
- 16:43He was worse than Roethlisberger.
- 16:45So now you're at five years. This year you bring in Russell
- 16:48Wilson, who's been OK, but it's not the Russell Wilson of five
- 16:52or ten years ago, let's be honest.
- 16:54So now you've had six straight seasons of quarterback play that
- 16:58is at best, a little bit above average and some of those years
- 17:02way below that. So I think if you look at what
- 17:05has happened to teams and coaches who don't have
- 17:09quarterbacks playing at a high level, they typically don't win
- 17:12championships or contend for championships.
- 17:14And that is where the Steelers are.
- 17:16I mean, hell, look at even Belichick.
- 17:18I mentioned his playoff record. Now Grady with everyone knows
- 17:20he's probably the greatest coach ever, certainly one of them.
- 17:24But Bill Belichick didn't do what Mike Tomlin did and not
- 17:27have losing seasons. He didn't get fired because he
- 17:30lost in the play offs. His last two years in New
- 17:33England, his records or I'm sorry, he lost Tom Brady, OK,
- 17:38here were his records. His last four years in New
- 17:40England, 7:00 and 9:10 and 7-8 and nine, four and 13, three
- 17:47years. Even the great Bill Belichick
- 17:49had did something Mike Tomlin never did, which is have a
- 17:52losing. I just think people lose all
- 17:56perspective.
