- 0:05Speaker 1: This is the Patriots Catch twenty two podcasts with Evan
- 0:09Speaker 1: Lazar and Alex bar Blazar and Lazarre.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Hello, everybody nailed it. He joined us always. Bar.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Here is Evan Lazar and Alex Bars. I remember when
- 0:23Speaker 1: when they came here for joint practice last year, Like
- 0:25Speaker 1: he did a scrump. Yes, but he was like he
- 0:28Speaker 1: was kind of confused as to while the reporters were
- 0:30Speaker 1: talking to him.
- 0:31Speaker 2: I'm sure he did. It was I think he always
- 0:34Speaker 2: was confused. That's just Robbie Anderson's face. Did I ever
- 0:39Speaker 2: tell you that I saw Robbie Anderson in Aruba one time?
- 0:42Speaker 1: No?
- 0:43Speaker 2: Yeah, I was walking out of a hotel and uh
- 0:46Speaker 2: in a Ruba You know my family. This is gonna
- 0:49Speaker 2: sound very like rich boy. It's okay, uh and I
- 0:53Speaker 2: and I was like, is that Robbie Anderson? It sure enough?
- 0:57Speaker 2: It was. Uh.
- 0:59Speaker 1: Anyway, I saw you Donnas HASLM and a Dunkin Donuts
- 1:02Speaker 1: in Fort Lauderdale, Florida once.
- 1:04Speaker 2: That's not that, that's kind of the same thing, right.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Yeah, Well we're out. Me and my brother we were
- 1:09Speaker 1: little and our parents were like somewhere else and strip
- 1:11Speaker 1: mall and we want to go Duncan. Yeah, and there's
- 1:13Speaker 1: like a this is when hummers were all like the coolest.
- 1:16Speaker 1: There's big yellow hummer with my custom Miami heat license plate,
- 1:20Speaker 1: said haslam, Like you think that's the Donnas Haslam. And
- 1:23Speaker 1: we go to Dunky Donuts and there's Donnas hasm. We're like, oh, yeah,
- 1:27Speaker 1: saw your car. He was just he had no time
- 1:29Speaker 1: for it.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Well, now we don't like Adonna's hasm.
- 1:32Speaker 1: No, no, at the time, he was like this would
- 1:35Speaker 1: have been probably like two thousand. I don't even think
- 1:37Speaker 1: the Celtics had their first Big three the Garnet. Yeah,
- 1:40Speaker 1: ap here Salon Big three, second Big Three. Yeah, we're
- 1:43Speaker 1: just not old enough for the first, right one. But yeah,
- 1:46Speaker 1: we Joe Mizzoula at Patriots practice. Joe Mazola is here today.
- 1:49Speaker 2: And then we have to get on the rails because
- 1:50Speaker 2: we don't have as much time as we normally do.
- 1:52Speaker 2: I we have to be an hour and thirty a
- 1:54Speaker 2: little tighter today because it's my fault, Evan's responsibility for it. Anyway,
- 2:01Speaker 2: let's get into it, because that was totally off topic
- 2:03Speaker 2: and had nothing to do with what we were starting
- 2:05Speaker 2: the show with today.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Would you even mentioned we're using the other set.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Yeah, that too, We're gonna use the other set. Today
- 2:10Speaker 2: is just a busy day here, as you guys can
- 2:13Speaker 2: imagine atcha led stadium. So this is our our for
- 2:16Speaker 2: people that don't watch unfilter, which I doubt is a
- 2:18Speaker 2: lot of people that don't watch both shows. But this
- 2:21Speaker 2: is our usually our unfiltered setup, This lounge set up here,
- 2:24Speaker 2: that's growing on me. I'm more comfortable in the chairs
- 2:28Speaker 2: and everything and I than I was at first. So
- 2:30Speaker 2: we're gonna use this set up today, just a little
- 2:33Speaker 2: bit easier. And on that note, let's get to the
- 2:36Speaker 2: news of the day.
- 2:37Speaker 1: People in the chat think you have your own vacation
- 2:39Speaker 1: house in Aruba.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Absolutely not. I mooch off my parents and that's about it.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Who mooched off their parents? And that's about it anyways.
- 2:50Speaker 2: News of the day, uh gerd Mayo naming Jacoby Brissett
- 2:55Speaker 2: the Patriots starting quarterback for the season. We'll get to
- 2:58Speaker 2: that in the second. Yeah, obviously that's a loose term.
- 3:02Speaker 2: I want to start by saying this. I know there's
- 3:05Speaker 2: gonna be a lot of people out there today, probably
- 3:09Speaker 2: on your station, that are going to be critical of
- 3:11Speaker 2: how this whole situation was handled in terms of this
- 3:14Speaker 2: a thirty am press conference. Obviously, there's a lot of
- 3:18Speaker 2: local media here that weren't too pleased that the national
- 3:20Speaker 2: guys broke the story twenty minutes before the press conference.
- 3:25Speaker 2: I totally understand that there's an element to all of
- 3:28Speaker 2: this public facing element to this that fans and media types,
- 3:33Speaker 2: probably maybe more media types even than fans, are going
- 3:37Speaker 2: to critique. And it was inefficient. It probably could have
- 3:41Speaker 2: been handled a little bit better in terms of that.
- 3:43Speaker 2: But I honestly I try not to be selfish about it.
- 3:48Speaker 2: You know, this morning, I was fired up about it
- 3:50Speaker 2: just as much as anybody that I had to come
- 3:53Speaker 2: here at eight thirty this morning. And you always do
- 3:55Speaker 2: a good job of not letting me get away with
- 3:57Speaker 2: those types of things at work on it, right, you know, don't.
- 4:02Speaker 2: I don't want to get bogged down by that kind
- 4:04Speaker 2: of stuff on this show, because at the end of
- 4:06Speaker 2: the day, the most important thing is is that this
- 4:09Speaker 2: does feel like the right football decision for the team
- 4:13Speaker 2: right now in week one. But it almost misses the
- 4:17Speaker 2: mark to me to a criticize the press conference and
- 4:22Speaker 2: how all that went down, like, who the heck cares like?
- 4:24Speaker 2: Really and b The decision to start Jakobe were sent
- 4:29Speaker 2: almost misses the mark to me as well a little
- 4:31Speaker 2: bit if you're gonna be critical of that, and it's
- 4:33Speaker 2: in a vacuum in itself, because the biggest thing, if
- 4:37Speaker 2: you want to be critical and I want to be
- 4:39Speaker 2: here for a second, is the reason why we're in
- 4:43Speaker 2: this position that Jacoby Brissett is starting and Drake May
- 4:48Speaker 2: isn't starting, is because Elliott Wolf and the Patriots front
- 4:53Speaker 2: office did not do a good enough job in the
- 4:55Speaker 2: offseason with this offensive line. Like that's why we're here.
- 4:59Speaker 2: If the pay Pots and the Bears switched quarterbacks and
- 5:04Speaker 2: Caleb was here and Drake May was there still first
- 5:06Speaker 2: and third overall, right, just switched quarterbacks. Drake May is
- 5:10Speaker 2: starting in Chicago week one. Yes, he's starting in Chicago
- 5:13Speaker 2: week one, and it'll be interesting to see. It's a
- 5:16Speaker 2: little bit of a litmus test. The Commanders have a
- 5:19Speaker 2: similar roster to the Patriots. They have Terry McLaurin, but
- 5:22Speaker 2: their offensive line kind of stinks, and outside of Terry McLaurin,
- 5:25Speaker 2: they don't have a whole lot.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Goings have a much more mobile quarterback now that Drake
- 5:29Speaker 1: May is not mobile.
- 5:30Speaker 2: He's more mobile in a different way though he's like
- 5:33Speaker 2: in structure mobile. Drake May I think is a better
- 5:36Speaker 2: improviser than Jayden Daniels.
- 5:37Speaker 1: Jade and Daniels better running away from people.
- 5:39Speaker 2: Yeah, that's fair. I guess my criticism is not about
- 5:44Speaker 2: the press conference or the fact that I had to
- 5:45Speaker 2: wake up early to get here on time, because you're right,
- 5:47Speaker 2: like that that stuff is selfish, like that stuff is
- 5:50Speaker 2: not Yes, that stuff is not well, not really, because
- 5:55Speaker 2: we don't really do nine to five.
- 5:56Speaker 1: That's what I'm saying.
- 5:57Speaker 2: The one time you have to do ninth to five criticised,
- 6:00Speaker 2: which is nine to four. And where I get angry
- 6:04Speaker 2: about this whole situation is that they did not set
- 6:10Speaker 2: up the roster in a position where rookie quarterback could succeed.
- 6:15Speaker 2: And that's where I feel like we should be pointing
- 6:18Speaker 2: our criticisms, not to the fact that they called a
- 6:20Speaker 2: press conference at eight thirty in the morning, like, get
- 6:22Speaker 2: over it. The fact of the matter is is that
- 6:25Speaker 2: this offensive line and the weight was handled in the
- 6:27Speaker 2: offseason was not good enough. Their big signing and I
- 6:32Speaker 2: put that other than Mike on winning, which is a
- 6:34Speaker 2: retained right. They're a big external addition, and I put
- 6:38Speaker 2: that in air quotes because big is very subjective. Was
- 6:43Speaker 2: Chuk Sakora for who was in the preseason game last
- 6:46Speaker 2: week against the Commanders, probably their worst lineman in that game,
- 6:50Speaker 2: didn't look like a Rosterbull player, not even just probably.
- 6:53Speaker 2: He was, Yeah, and now we're at a point where
- 6:58Speaker 2: Gerrodmeo is going up there on and he kind of
- 7:00Speaker 2: reiterated the same sentiment today, what's best for the team
- 7:06Speaker 2: and the short term might not necessarily be what's best
- 7:09Speaker 2: for the team in the long term. And then he
- 7:12Speaker 2: also said that prioritizing winning games in the short term
- 7:16Speaker 2: is not necessarily what's best for the team in the
- 7:18Speaker 2: long term, right, And so basically what he's telling you
- 7:21Speaker 2: is is, I think Drake may is a better quarterback.
- 7:24Speaker 2: I know that Drake may is the future of the team,
- 7:26Speaker 2: regardless if he's better today or tomorrow. But we're not
- 7:30Speaker 2: ready for him. And the fact that they're not ready
- 7:33Speaker 2: to play Drake made to me is a critique on
- 7:34Speaker 2: Elliott Wolf in the personnel department.
- 7:36Speaker 1: I don't disagree with that. I would say, though, like
- 7:41Speaker 1: you should know as drawd Mayo coming in that that's
- 7:46Speaker 1: the case. The offensive line should not have snuck up
- 7:49Speaker 1: on anybody's surprise by how bad it is. Maybe it did,
- 7:53Speaker 1: it shouldn't have. I still go back to and this
- 7:57Speaker 1: is a question I get a lot. Why did Rod
- 7:59Speaker 1: may keep calling it a competition if that clearly wasn't
- 8:03Speaker 1: happening and we did this last year with Mac Jones
- 8:05Speaker 1: and Bailey z Appy again, you want to talk about
- 8:07Speaker 1: my station saying like, oh, it's a quarterback competition because
- 8:10Speaker 1: Bill said they're both competing, but like that's coach speak
- 8:13Speaker 1: for participating. Yeah, a quarterback competition is an actual, like
- 8:17Speaker 1: tangible thing you can define where both or any position battle,
- 8:21Speaker 1: but like at quarterback, both players are getting opportunities with
- 8:24Speaker 1: the whatever unit you know, top unit in this case,
- 8:27Speaker 1: and it doesn't have to be equal fifty to fifty,
- 8:30Speaker 1: but close things like that. There was never competition, And
- 8:34Speaker 1: I feel like if Girod Mayo had just said that
- 8:38Speaker 1: or not said that from the beginning, you wouldn't have
- 8:42Speaker 1: the circus. Maybe you don't even have this press conference
- 8:45Speaker 1: today because outside of that one thing, I think we
- 8:49Speaker 1: all pretty much knew Jacoby Brissette was starting. If they
- 8:52Speaker 1: had just gone through without this press conference, we would
- 8:55Speaker 1: have all assumed it was Jacoby Brissett and we won, right,
- 8:57Speaker 1: So if if they just hadn't labeled it a competition,
- 9:02Speaker 1: and this is perfect for this show because half of
- 9:04Speaker 1: our arguments we're making the same point. We're just arguing
- 9:06Speaker 1: the semantics of the argument, and it's a semantics thing.
- 9:10Speaker 1: There never was a quarterback competition, so there was no
- 9:12Speaker 1: competition for Drake Made to win, So naming Drake made
- 9:15Speaker 1: the starter or sorry, there was no competition for Drake
- 9:17Speaker 1: Made to win, so named Jacoby Brissett the starter, in
- 9:21Speaker 1: some ways is redundant. I guess they're unnecessary. But they
- 9:25Speaker 1: called it a competition, so you had to go through
- 9:27Speaker 1: this whole thing. They could have avoided that by just
- 9:29Speaker 1: not calling it a competition. That part I still don't understand.
- 9:33Speaker 1: I understand wanting Drake May to compete, and I think
- 9:36Speaker 1: there was a competition in the sense that he would.
- 9:40Speaker 1: It's Drake against time. He's competing to show the coaches
- 9:45Speaker 1: and also the other guys on the roster that he
- 9:49Speaker 1: can be the starter sooner rather than later, even if
- 9:51Speaker 1: it's not week one, and I think he did that
- 9:54Speaker 1: in that sense. I think he won the competition. Remember,
- 9:56Speaker 1: I came in talking about Halloween. I came in talking
- 9:59Speaker 1: about weeks eleven, twelve, thirteen. Now I'm sitting here telling
- 10:02Speaker 1: you weeks five or six, because I think he showed
- 10:05Speaker 1: tremendous growth over camp. But that's not what a competition is.
- 10:10Speaker 1: In leaving the door open for week one as much
- 10:12Speaker 1: as they did, I understand you want to have an
- 10:15Speaker 1: element of nothing's given, everything's earned. Every job is up
- 10:19Speaker 1: for grabs. You're coming in here every day. We want
- 10:21Speaker 1: you earning that roster spot. Right, Success isn't success isn't given.
- 10:26Speaker 1: It's whatever it is least and wrenches do every day.
- 10:30Speaker 1: That's stupid cliche. Yeah right, I get that. But also
- 10:35Speaker 1: at a certain point, now you've created a circus and
- 10:37Speaker 1: a distraction around the team that you probably didn't need
- 10:39Speaker 1: to create.
- 10:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I totally agree. And I actually again, I'll probably
- 10:43Speaker 2: a little inside baseball, but I went up to Jacolebrisett
- 10:45Speaker 2: in the locker room after we talked to him today
- 10:47Speaker 2: in the scrum, and I was like, I guess congratulation,
- 10:51Speaker 2: Like it was sort of awkward to even congratulate him
- 10:53Speaker 2: because he had been running with the ones all summer,
- 10:56Speaker 2: and like, to your point, the only way that it's
- 11:00Speaker 2: something were to change, would have been out of nowhere,
- 11:04Speaker 2: like it would have been at a left field, And
- 11:06Speaker 2: I agree with you. I feel like the press conference
- 11:09Speaker 2: this morning was put in place because they didn't want
- 11:12Speaker 2: it to look like Girod wasn't going to be accountable
- 11:15Speaker 2: for the decision, right, and so they wanted he wanted
- 11:17Speaker 2: to be out there, he wanted to announce it, he
- 11:20Speaker 2: wanted to answer a few of the top questions about
- 11:23Speaker 2: the situation, so it wasn't looking like he was kind
- 11:26Speaker 2: of running away from the media on the subject. But
- 11:31Speaker 2: would any of us have been all that bothered by
- 11:35Speaker 2: the fact that Ian and Adam Schefter tweeted it out, said,
- 11:42Speaker 2: you know this breaking news per sources, Jacoby Brissett Patriots
- 11:46Speaker 2: Week one starter maybe on Patriots dot com. At that point,
- 11:49Speaker 2: we do some sort of release about it too, you know,
- 11:52Speaker 2: an article or just a tweet even just to say
- 11:55Speaker 2: QB one Jacoby Brissett, and we all we didn't even
- 11:58Speaker 2: need this press conference, right, like, we didn't even need
- 12:01Speaker 2: to go through this. It felt like they were calling
- 12:03Speaker 2: a press conference for a formality and that was a
- 12:06Speaker 2: little bit awkward too. So I agree with that's sort
- 12:08Speaker 2: of your point where like it was making something out
- 12:11Speaker 2: of it, like out of thin air that it wasn't
- 12:12Speaker 2: didn't really even it was.
- 12:13Speaker 1: It was it was they created this whole saga. They
- 12:17Speaker 1: created it, and so you needed an end to it.
- 12:19Speaker 1: You needed to put a cap on it. And I
- 12:20Speaker 1: think it got to the point where, like I said before,
- 12:23Speaker 1: if they hadn't said anything, I think you could have
- 12:26Speaker 1: just gone on. We all would have assumed. Ninety percent
- 12:28Speaker 1: of us would have assumed Jacob sets a starter. Yeah,
- 12:30Speaker 1: and it would have gone in a week one and
- 12:31Speaker 1: we would have been like, hey, starting, Okay, that's what
- 12:33Speaker 1: it looks like all along. But I think when they
- 12:35Speaker 1: opened the door a little bit, they then felt they
- 12:37Speaker 1: need to close the door because game week, do you
- 12:40Speaker 1: want it lingering over the team? You know? Do they
- 12:43Speaker 1: want Wednesday, Thursday, Friday us coming in? So who's the starter?
- 12:46Speaker 1: What's it looked like?
- 12:47Speaker 2: And they also can this is something that Bill did
- 12:50Speaker 2: towards the end that I disagreed with as well. They
- 12:54Speaker 2: can't force the players to speak on behalf of the coach.
- 12:58Speaker 2: So like what happens is if you don't do a
- 13:01Speaker 2: significant if you don't tell people Dutch Koe pursays, the
- 13:05Speaker 2: starting you just kind of you know, Mosey. Then every
- 13:08Speaker 2: single time we talk to the players, it's that's gonna
- 13:11Speaker 2: be wherever. Do you know who's starting? Do you know
- 13:13Speaker 2: who's starting? And that's sort of what happened with Mac
- 13:15Speaker 2: Jones and Bailey Zappy. So I get wanting to have
- 13:18Speaker 2: like kind of a united front and having Gerard Mayo
- 13:20Speaker 2: be the one that is actually all really fitting. I
- 13:23Speaker 2: don't want to talk too much about all this politics
- 13:26Speaker 2: stuff though, because that that's not this show. Like this
- 13:28Speaker 2: show is about the about the football minutia. But the
- 13:31Speaker 2: last thing I'll just say about it and then we can,
- 13:34Speaker 2: I you know, want to make a different point, but
- 13:35Speaker 2: it's unrelated to this whole all this stuff. I just
- 13:38Speaker 2: want to hammer home the fact that to me, this
- 13:41Speaker 2: is this is Elliot Wolfe's fault. This is Elliot Wolf's
- 13:44Speaker 2: fault that we're at this point because if you ask me,
- 13:47Speaker 2: you went, you said that this is sort of the
- 13:50Speaker 2: plan all along and that sort of thing. Totally agree
- 13:53Speaker 2: with you. I actually think Drake may exceeded expectations internally.
- 13:59Speaker 1: I did externally also, Frankly, yeah.
- 14:01Speaker 2: I believe that they were prepared to red shirt him
- 14:04Speaker 2: for the entire season. They knew the roster probably wasn't
- 14:07Speaker 2: gonna be close enough to compete anyways, and he had
- 14:10Speaker 2: all these issues that they were gonna have to work
- 14:11Speaker 2: through and they were gonna have to build them up
- 14:13Speaker 2: and all that kind of stuff. And then he got
- 14:16Speaker 2: they got into camp, and at the beginning of camp
- 14:18Speaker 2: it actually looked like we were trending towards that. Then
- 14:21Speaker 2: all of a sudden, the Eagles preseason game happens. The
- 14:23Speaker 2: light switch flips on, and he's like a different guy
- 14:26Speaker 2: after that, and all in Girodmeo turned into a believer,
- 14:29Speaker 2: Like he convinced grod Mayo that this was a true competition.
- 14:33Speaker 2: I really do believe that. And at that point it
- 14:37Speaker 2: was kind of like, all right, it's too you know,
- 14:39Speaker 2: we got to be a little bit more open minded
- 14:41Speaker 2: about potentially playing Drake made sooner than we expected, and
- 14:45Speaker 2: maybe that took them a little bit by surprise. But
- 14:48Speaker 2: the main thing I really feel, and this is what,
- 14:50Speaker 2: you know, kind of my big take on this, This
- 14:52Speaker 2: to me is is Elliot Wolf in the personnel Department's fault,
- 14:56Speaker 2: because if they had properly equipped this off defensive line
- 15:01Speaker 2: to support a rookie quarterback. Then Drake May's ascension happens
- 15:05Speaker 2: exactly the same way, and he's and he's in their
- 15:09Speaker 2: Week one against the Bengals because you feel like you
- 15:11Speaker 2: can adequately support him on the field. And they can't
- 15:16Speaker 2: tell us that they feel that way anymore, because then
- 15:19Speaker 2: there's no reason for the guy that per the head
- 15:22Speaker 2: coach outplayed the other guy in the summer, and clearly
- 15:26Speaker 2: to all of us that are watching him can see
- 15:28Speaker 2: that he's the more talented guy, at least at the
- 15:30Speaker 2: very least. I don't know about all the mental stuff,
- 15:32Speaker 2: you know, yeah, all that kind of thing, but he's
- 15:34Speaker 2: easily the most talented guy. And now you're telling us
- 15:39Speaker 2: that he's not starting, Well, he's not starting because of
- 15:41Speaker 2: your roster like that, that's why he's not starting.
- 15:43Speaker 1: How much of that do you think was just the
- 15:45Speaker 1: default defaulting to the Packer way and you know, we
- 15:48Speaker 1: don't play quarterbacks right away and just assuming they were
- 15:52Speaker 1: gonna redshirt him. Look, I'm with you. Everybody knows where
- 15:55Speaker 1: I am, and I'm sick of hearing them. What would
- 15:57Speaker 1: Joan Williams have done that These guys don't line up
- 16:01Speaker 1: literally line up on sides. Yeah, that's what he would
- 16:04Speaker 1: have done. That's where the bar is right now for
- 16:06Speaker 1: this offensive line coming off of Sunday Night. I know
- 16:09Speaker 1: you don't think it was maybe as bad as some
- 16:10Speaker 1: people are making it out to be because they were
- 16:13Speaker 1: setting some blocks and they were making some plays on tape.
- 16:14Speaker 1: I don't necessarily disagree with that. But if you can't
- 16:17Speaker 1: get the ball snapped and you can't line up correctly,
- 16:21Speaker 1: nothing you do after that matters. Right, Yeah, the microphone
- 16:24Speaker 1: could be over here, Evan. We can do a great podcast,
- 16:27Speaker 1: but it's gonna sound like crap because we're not lined
- 16:29Speaker 1: up correctly. So hopefully people could hear that. I try
- 16:32Speaker 1: to project a little more to make my point, but
- 16:33Speaker 1: that is my point, Like you see what I'm doing.
- 16:35Speaker 1: That came through. We're good. Yeah, all right, perfect, So
- 16:38Speaker 1: people get my point. So yeah, it would have been
- 16:40Speaker 1: nice if they invested more in this. It would have
- 16:41Speaker 1: been nice. And look, I like Jalen Polk. I think
- 16:43Speaker 1: he's a good player. I still go back to tackles.
- 16:46Speaker 1: Should have been the second pick and especially there, or
- 16:50Speaker 1: be more aggressive moving up. You know, It's like Caden
- 16:54Speaker 1: Walls too. There are other tackles like more or not
- 16:57Speaker 1: even more, just left tackles the guys who had played
- 16:59Speaker 1: the left side, and then you can put Chucks o
- 17:01Speaker 1: core four he's comfortable, and put Mike and WNDU over
- 17:03Speaker 1: there or something like it's a lot more clear cut
- 17:05Speaker 1: and he might play over there anyway. But that puts
- 17:07Speaker 1: puts Chukes on the left side, you lose that third
- 17:10Speaker 1: round pack or he's not like a factor in it.
- 17:12Speaker 1: So no, they was Sodo this offseason or last off season.
- 17:18Speaker 2: That was last off okay, which is when I also
- 17:21Speaker 2: want to for those who remember that.
- 17:22Speaker 1: Sodo meant signed one draft win and when it came
- 17:25Speaker 1: to the plan.
- 17:26Speaker 2: And I'm glad you brought that up because I wanted
- 17:28Speaker 2: to bring that back to that for a second as well,
- 17:30Speaker 2: because as much as I am not trying to I
- 17:33Speaker 2: have said its Elliott Wolf's fault, like I'm not trying
- 17:35Speaker 2: to make excuses for anybody, but really this started with
- 17:38Speaker 2: tackle years ago, and just to kind of hone him
- 17:41Speaker 2: on recent it really started last off season because the
- 17:45Speaker 2: last off season in the draft, they didn't draft to tackle.
- 17:48Speaker 2: They drafted a two guards in the center.
- 17:50Speaker 1: Well remember City so was supposed to play tackle.
- 17:52Speaker 2: That was the That was their full crap with that
- 17:55Speaker 2: took Jake Andrews is on injured reserve. Antonio Maffi's gone. Yeah,
- 18:00Speaker 2: Chad Ryland, your fourth round pick gone, who's drafted just
- 18:04Speaker 2: ahead of Duwan Jones. Yeah, so Bill didn't kick the
- 18:07Speaker 2: can down.
- 18:09Speaker 1: We did this a couple of weeks ago. This all
- 18:10Speaker 1: goes back to when Solder left in twenty seventeen, twenty eighteen,
- 18:14Speaker 1: and they basically used Trent Brown as a stopgap for
- 18:16Speaker 1: years and years and years so they could fill other
- 18:19Speaker 1: positions which they didn't need to fill. But the eventually
- 18:23Speaker 1: they ran out of stopgap years on Trent Brown.
- 18:26Speaker 2: So when we I believe it was the show after
- 18:28Speaker 2: the joint practice, Yeah, and I was pretty upset, right,
- 18:32Speaker 2: I was pretty upset with appalled, I guess this is
- 18:34Speaker 2: a better word of what I saw in that practice.
- 18:36Speaker 2: And I remember saying to you something along the lines of,
- 18:39Speaker 2: we are at this point now that they can't play
- 18:42Speaker 2: Drake Made, even if he's the best quarterback because of
- 18:46Speaker 2: how terrible they are up front. And when when Alex
- 18:50Speaker 2: Van Pelt says that Jacoby Brisset is better equipped to
- 18:55Speaker 2: handle pressure because he knows the tools and the offense
- 18:58Speaker 2: to get them in and out of things, or to
- 19:01Speaker 2: read hots or whatever the case may be. And this
- 19:03Speaker 2: is so much better. You know, he's so much better
- 19:05Speaker 2: at all of that. It's like, well, that's also just
- 19:07Speaker 2: a big factor because he can't block anybody, or to
- 19:10Speaker 2: your point, you can't even line up right. So like
- 19:13Speaker 2: it just that's the frustrating part that I have right
- 19:16Speaker 2: now as a Patriots fan. It's not the press conference,
- 19:20Speaker 2: it's not how the announcement was handled. It was the
- 19:23Speaker 2: fact that they never were put Drake May in a
- 19:26Speaker 2: position to actually win this job, and they never gave
- 19:29Speaker 2: Drake May a chance to play early on in a
- 19:32Speaker 2: play week one because the roster's not ready for him.
- 19:35Speaker 1: So to kind of put a cap on that point,
- 19:38Speaker 1: because I don't think either one of us has said
- 19:40Speaker 1: this yet definitively, and I do think it needs to
- 19:42Speaker 1: be said. Starting Jacoby Brissett week one is the right call.
- 19:47Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, I thought it said off at the time.
- 19:49Speaker 2: Say okay, I'm not. I'm glad you just bring it
- 19:52Speaker 2: back up. If I didn't, it's the right football like
- 19:54Speaker 2: just just.
- 19:55Speaker 1: And because I think some people are losing track of
- 19:57Speaker 1: this point, you can be disappoint I did. Yeah, that
- 20:01Speaker 1: you don't get to see Drake May. You can absolutely
- 20:04Speaker 1: be disappointed and upset by that. And you know some
- 20:07Speaker 1: of the points we're making and look at why this happened,
- 20:10Speaker 1: and also acknowledge here's where they are. We can't change
- 20:13Speaker 1: any of that. We can't They can't go back and
- 20:15Speaker 1: redo the moves in the offseason and add offensive linemen.
- 20:18Speaker 1: But this is the right move. The team's not ready
- 20:21Speaker 1: for May yet. I also do think it helps me
- 20:24Speaker 1: a little bit to see things behind the scenes. And
- 20:26Speaker 1: Matt Dahl, if my call off at ninety eight, my call,
- 20:28Speaker 1: you get ninety eight five to the sportsub dot Com
- 20:30Speaker 1: has made this point a couple times. It's a very
- 20:32Speaker 1: good point. What can so People say, Oh, you're not
- 20:38Speaker 1: gonna ruin May by putting him into early. You can't
- 20:40Speaker 1: ruin a quarterback by playing him to early, which I
- 20:42Speaker 1: don't think is true, but people make that point, Okay,
- 20:45Speaker 1: can you ruin a quarterback by sitting him? Like? What
- 20:49Speaker 1: detrimental could happen to Drake May from him sitting? There's
- 20:52Speaker 1: one sort of answer that I think is legitimate to
- 20:56Speaker 1: that question, which is, well, does he become frustrated with
- 20:59Speaker 1: the coaching after the franchise. Yeah, Drake May does not
- 21:02Speaker 1: seem like that kind of guy, if anything else, so
- 21:04Speaker 1: far the other way.
- 21:05Speaker 2: Four or five years, regardless of if he's frustrated or not,
- 21:08Speaker 2: Like he's under contract, we don't want.
- 21:09Speaker 1: Him to check out. But like, no, I hear what
- 21:10Speaker 1: you're saying, and he does not remotely seem like that
- 21:13Speaker 1: kind of guy at all. If anything, he seems that
- 21:16Speaker 1: kind of guy maybe likes a fire under him in
- 21:17Speaker 1: a good way. So you're not losing anything, Like none
- 21:22Speaker 1: of us are into the illusion that they're contending this
- 21:24Speaker 1: year even with him, you're not losing anything by not
- 21:29Speaker 1: playing him. There really is no downside. There's no not
- 21:33Speaker 1: a ton of upsides to not playing him, but there's
- 21:36Speaker 1: no downside to it. You just make sure he stays
- 21:38Speaker 1: healthy and you allow him to develop a little bit
- 21:41Speaker 1: more well. And this is another one I tweeted out
- 21:44Speaker 1: this morning that Okay, well, you know this gives them
- 21:47Speaker 1: time to figure things out on the offense. People world,
- 21:50Speaker 1: what are they figuring out? You know, I can figure
- 21:52Speaker 1: out the line. It sucks, you know, he could figure
- 21:54Speaker 1: out the receivers. It sucks. Oh, to an extent. We talked,
- 21:58Speaker 1: We talked about this A lot has to be a
- 22:00Speaker 1: best five. Yeah, I don't know that the best five.
- 22:02Speaker 2: I want to get to that in a second. But
- 22:04Speaker 2: so I don't know what the.
- 22:05Speaker 1: Best five is. Good? Yeah, but there has like there
- 22:08Speaker 1: has to by definition be a best five. R Right.
- 22:11Speaker 1: It at least gives you time to find that. It
- 22:13Speaker 1: gives Jalen Polk and maybe Jamon Baker some time to
- 22:16Speaker 1: develop and become a little bit better as weapons. It
- 22:18Speaker 1: gives you time for City So to get healthy, for
- 22:21Speaker 1: Hunter Henry to get healthy, for Darian Low to get healthy. Like,
- 22:25Speaker 1: thinking they'll make no progress regardless of the quarterback from
- 22:28Speaker 1: week one to week eighteen is crazy, will it. It
- 22:31Speaker 1: might not be monumental progress. It still might not put
- 22:33Speaker 1: them in a spot where they're going to be a
- 22:34Speaker 1: top ten offense in the NFL. It won't, but they'll
- 22:38Speaker 1: start to figure a few things out and that can
- 22:40Speaker 1: only help Drake May once he does become the starter.
- 22:42Speaker 2: So there's two ways I want to go about this.
- 22:45Speaker 2: The first one, I think is what you just said,
- 22:46Speaker 2: So I'll just go there directly. Now it's twofold one.
- 22:53Speaker 2: They need to figure out how they're going to move
- 22:55Speaker 2: the ball offensively. And I know that sounds so rudimentary
- 22:58Speaker 2: and like or elementary, baby, the better tear before it.
- 23:01Speaker 2: But they literally need to figure out what are they
- 23:05Speaker 2: good at on offense. That take away Drake May is
- 23:10Speaker 2: like you know the kJ Osborne touchdown that never was
- 23:12Speaker 2: like take away the off script.
- 23:14Speaker 1: Oh they took that away. We don't need to take
- 23:16Speaker 1: that away for him. Mavin Jukes took that away.
- 23:18Speaker 2: Do you think out of all people who I have
- 23:20Speaker 2: been waiting since April, since April to see Drake May
- 23:25Speaker 2: roll to his left throw back across the field fifty
- 23:30Speaker 2: yards down the field for a touchdown. I've been waiting
- 23:34Speaker 2: since January to see that play. And as it's unfolding,
- 23:39Speaker 2: I see the flag going the air, and I see
- 23:42Speaker 2: Drake May hunch over in disgust and just be like,
- 23:45Speaker 2: I know what the flag is for already. I know
- 23:48Speaker 2: this doesn't count. It still counts in my in our eyes. Okay,
- 23:51Speaker 2: we all still saw it happen.
- 23:53Speaker 1: You know what I kept thinking of immediately after that play.
- 23:55Speaker 1: Remember the clip of Matt Ryan, like late in his
- 23:57Speaker 1: career at the Falcons when they're trying to motion and
- 24:00Speaker 1: get things he has. He yelled that time, whine. Uh yeah,
- 24:04Speaker 1: I just kept thinking in my head in that exact case.
- 24:06Speaker 2: Wine the oh god, it was. That was the play
- 24:10Speaker 2: that we've all been waiting for because it's it's his
- 24:13Speaker 2: it's his superpower. He's it's Alan Mahomes esque, like he
- 24:17Speaker 2: has that off platform arm talent is just silly like
- 24:21Speaker 2: guys on that play, and I didn't want to go
- 24:24Speaker 2: down this road, but I have to for a second.
- 24:26Speaker 2: On that play, the deep safety, it's it splits field right,
- 24:29Speaker 2: It's like it's like Tampa two. The deep safety on
- 24:32Speaker 2: the left hand side of the field. He latches onto
- 24:34Speaker 2: the intermediate route and not the clear the clear out
- 24:37Speaker 2: route by kJ Osborne's just a vertical to clear out
- 24:40Speaker 2: the sideline on the flood concept. And he latches on
- 24:42Speaker 2: to the to the number two receiver the intermediate route
- 24:46Speaker 2: because he says, there's no effing way that this guy
- 24:49Speaker 2: is gonna throw this ball rolling to his left forty
- 24:54Speaker 2: yards down the field. He can't. Nobody can make that throw.
- 24:57Speaker 2: This kid can make that throw right, and he just.
- 25:01Speaker 1: As long as he's healthy and upright, which this safety
- 25:04Speaker 1: turns around and it is like no freaking way, just
- 25:07Speaker 1: like it's like, yeah, like that, that's that's what we've
- 25:10Speaker 1: all been waiting for.
- 25:11Speaker 2: So you go back to the offensive line for a second.
- 25:15Speaker 2: I want to start there. But the big point is
- 25:18Speaker 2: what the offense as a whole, Alex van Pelt needs
- 25:21Speaker 2: to use this next five month, six weeks, eight weeks,
- 25:25Speaker 2: whatever it is, because if they even think about red
- 25:28Speaker 2: shirting Drake May at this point, I am going to
- 25:30Speaker 2: freaking riot on this show. I can promise you that.
- 25:33Speaker 2: So they whatever it is, whatever their timeline is for
- 25:37Speaker 2: Drake May being ready to play, five weeks, eight weeks, whatever.
- 25:42Speaker 2: This is a information gathering expedition. This is Yes, it's
- 25:47Speaker 2: about winning football games, and you want to try to win.
- 25:49Speaker 2: And I'm not trying to say that it's bigger than winning,
- 25:52Speaker 2: but you need to figure out what's your core offensively,
- 25:56Speaker 2: just your skill talent, your line, who's your best five,
- 26:00Speaker 2: who is your best five in the skill group? How
- 26:03Speaker 2: are you gonna move the football? How are you gonna
- 26:05Speaker 2: run it? You gotta be able to run the ball
- 26:06Speaker 2: with this offense. So is it gonna be outside zone?
- 26:09Speaker 2: Is it gonna be more gap, is it gonna be
- 26:12Speaker 2: what is it gonna be How are you gonna run
- 26:13Speaker 2: the football? How are you gonna move the ball? In general?
- 26:17Speaker 2: Who's gonna play the five guys on the offensive line?
- 26:20Speaker 2: What do you have in Jalen Polk and Javon Baker.
- 26:23Speaker 2: I think that's big if one of those guys, and
- 26:25Speaker 2: it's trending more towards Polk at this point. If Polk
- 26:29Speaker 2: ends up being like a really good player, I'm not
- 26:31Speaker 2: ready to put a ceiling on him yet or a floor,
- 26:33Speaker 2: but let's just call him a good player, Like you
- 26:35Speaker 2: hit yeah on that pick, then that's something that you
- 26:38Speaker 2: can find out. Still, Jacoby Present is not a total
- 26:41Speaker 2: a total bum. They can fit find out if Jalen
- 26:44Speaker 2: Polk can play or not a little bit with him.
- 26:46Speaker 1: He's good enough for them to be able to develop
- 26:48Speaker 1: the rest of the offense.
- 26:48Speaker 2: Round right, So that's just a big part of it.
- 26:50Speaker 2: Then I want to talk about the five line on
- 26:53Speaker 2: the offensive line. Now. Injuries always play a role in
- 26:56Speaker 2: these kinds of things, so I can't they can't control injuries.
- 27:02Speaker 2: So if they if Darien Lowe and Cities aren't healthy
- 27:05Speaker 2: and they can't play Week one, then I can't get
- 27:07Speaker 2: my best five on the field.
- 27:09Speaker 1: But it goes back to your point from earlier of
- 27:12Speaker 1: there's no secret offensive lineman get hurt. And I've been
- 27:14Speaker 1: saying this at the beginning. It's not just the starters
- 27:16Speaker 1: that are a question marker. You don't know Whinny the
- 27:18Speaker 1: backups are either they are bringing a center today, they
- 27:20Speaker 1: have a backup center, right.
- 27:21Speaker 2: So I want to go down with what I believe
- 27:25Speaker 2: is their best five And it's two things. And I
- 27:29Speaker 2: know I always bring up Dante's scarnecia, but I think
- 27:32Speaker 2: he's the best guy that's ever done it, so.
- 27:34Speaker 1: As you should whenever you talk about offensive.
- 27:37Speaker 2: His word is probably better than most, if not probably
- 27:40Speaker 2: better than all, You'll be honest. One of the big
- 27:43Speaker 2: things that he always used to say, and what he's
- 27:47Speaker 2: told me before, is that you want everybody as best
- 27:52Speaker 2: as you possibly can to be in their natural positions.
- 27:56Speaker 2: You want everybody to be comfortable in their natural spots.
- 28:00Speaker 2: And then you roll with that and you try to
- 28:02Speaker 2: build the continuity right and the line that they've been
- 28:06Speaker 2: working with might be out of necessity that they're working
- 28:09Speaker 2: with the line combination that they are right now, which
- 28:11Speaker 2: is from left to right, Chukes Nick Leverett today, but
- 28:16Speaker 2: City eventually David andrews Leyden Robinson, Mike On win you.
- 28:21Speaker 2: But what I feel like is that you're really playing
- 28:26Speaker 2: with two guys at a position, because on when he's
- 28:30Speaker 2: at a position at right tackle and Chukes is out
- 28:32Speaker 2: of position at left tip, I think it's three.
- 28:34Speaker 1: Wasn't Lade Robinson primarily a left guard.
- 28:36Speaker 2: And he's actually right here? I look this up. So
- 28:39Speaker 2: you're playing with two guys. Your tackles are at a position.
- 28:42Speaker 1: Yeah, on both sides, and that's the worst spot to
- 28:44Speaker 1: have at a position.
- 28:45Speaker 2: So the way I look at it, and I know
- 28:48Speaker 2: this might I'm not telling you that their options are great.
- 28:51Speaker 2: Their options are not great.
- 28:53Speaker 1: But again, we're trying to find the best five. It's
- 28:55Speaker 1: not necessarily good five, but there is, by definition a
- 28:58Speaker 1: best five.
- 28:59Speaker 2: Vederian lots And has been the best left tackle they've
- 29:01Speaker 2: had in camp.
- 29:02Speaker 1: It's been really the only left tackle they've had in camp.
- 29:04Speaker 2: But I agree with you, best left tackle they've had
- 29:06Speaker 2: in camp. You can you want to say, oh, well,
- 29:07Speaker 2: I mean who else Chukes, Kayden Wallace.
- 29:10Speaker 1: But those guys even I'd like to see more Kadan Wallace.
- 29:13Speaker 1: So here's and I know he's out of position. I
- 29:15Speaker 1: get all that, but this is I don't know. Now
- 29:17Speaker 1: I'm backtracking, but it's I wish they'd experimented with more
- 29:20Speaker 1: combinations during camp instead of getting to this point where
- 29:23Speaker 1: it becomes a fire drill a week before the season.
- 29:26Speaker 1: So here's what I but, yes, it has been Verderian law.
- 29:28Speaker 1: I'm just being a smart ass.
- 29:29Speaker 2: I would put Vadarian Low at left tackle.
- 29:31Speaker 1: I would too, honestly at this point, I think.
- 29:33Speaker 2: He's your best left tackle.
- 29:34Speaker 1: YEP.
- 29:35Speaker 2: The one sack that he gave up in the preseason
- 29:37Speaker 2: against the Eagles was more a miscommunication, like poor execution
- 29:41Speaker 2: of a chip than anything. It wasn't like he just
- 29:43Speaker 2: got blown by by Nolan Smith and gave up a
- 29:46Speaker 2: sack right like. It was more something that is, it's easily.
- 29:49Speaker 1: Correctable, and he lines up correctly.
- 29:51Speaker 2: And he lines up correctly. Vaderian Low at left tackle, yep,
- 29:55Speaker 2: left guard. And this is maybe the one spot where
- 29:57Speaker 2: somebody could be at a position technically, But to me,
- 30:00Speaker 2: that's a two horse race between Cities and Leyden Robinson.
- 30:04Speaker 1: I think, I mean, City Show's not out of position there.
- 30:06Speaker 2: Right, but technically would be. But he practiced a lot
- 30:10Speaker 2: this summer at left guard.
- 30:11Speaker 1: Sure, I'm comfortable with either of those guys there.
- 30:14Speaker 2: We know who's at center, David Andrews that center better.
- 30:18Speaker 1: I'll tell you this as we go through the line.
- 30:20Speaker 1: I don't know that there's a player that this team
- 30:21Speaker 1: can afford to lose less than David Andrews. Yeah, it is,
- 30:26Speaker 1: especially because I I don't think it's a coincidence that
- 30:28Speaker 1: he doesn't play and they have trouble lining up, and
- 30:31Speaker 1: they have trouble with the lay of games and things
- 30:33Speaker 1: like that. All the calls go through the center. All
- 30:35Speaker 1: the checks go through the center, not all the calls.
- 30:37Speaker 1: All the checks go through the center.
- 30:38Speaker 2: Right, All the line calls go through the center.
- 30:41Speaker 1: And he's just a veteran with a bunch of young guys,
- 30:44Speaker 1: and I think his presence is important. I would like
- 30:47Speaker 1: to They also don't have anyody else can snapped the ball.
- 30:49Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a big thing. I would like to be
- 30:51Speaker 2: able to the ball with him out there. He looks
- 30:53Speaker 2: to his left, and he looks to his right, and
- 30:54Speaker 2: he would say to Chukes, can you get on the
- 30:56Speaker 2: freaking exactly right?
- 30:58Speaker 1: You know?
- 30:58Speaker 2: I would hope sener David Andrews, Yep, this part, this
- 31:03Speaker 2: part I feel extremely strongly about and I'll die on
- 31:07Speaker 2: this on this hill.
- 31:08Speaker 1: I know what this is and I've even come around
- 31:09Speaker 1: to it. Mike on win who is a right guard,
- 31:11Speaker 1: Yes he is, Mike on w who.
- 31:13Speaker 2: Is a right guard. He has when he plays right tackle,
- 31:18Speaker 2: he can be a he can survive. He's fine at
- 31:22Speaker 2: right tackle. He can survive, he can dominate on the interior.
- 31:27Speaker 2: He is a all pro caliber guard. He is a
- 31:32Speaker 2: borderline starting right tackle. He is a right guard. And
- 31:36Speaker 2: at this point, you're doing him a disservice. It's your
- 31:39Speaker 2: roster construction that's doing him a disservice that he has
- 31:42Speaker 2: to play right tackle because you don't have any other
- 31:44Speaker 2: better right tackles to play because you they clearly don't
- 31:47Speaker 2: think Kayden Wallace is ready for whatever reason.
- 31:50Speaker 1: Right So, uh, just to kind of add to that,
- 31:55Speaker 1: I remember all the people that said you have to
- 31:57Speaker 1: pay Mike play Mike on winnu a tackle because you
- 32:00Speaker 1: paid him as a tackle and he's an overpaid guard.
- 32:02Speaker 2: Don't care.
- 32:03Speaker 1: I never cared, But now you look at it, all right,
- 32:06Speaker 1: he's the fifth highest paid right tackle in football. But
- 32:10Speaker 1: where would you rank him ability wise? Somewhere middle of
- 32:12Speaker 1: the pack.
- 32:12Speaker 2: Fifteen, sixteen, seventeenth somewhere right tackle. Yeah, to me, he's
- 32:17Speaker 2: he's in the bottom half of the league. I'm not
- 32:20Speaker 2: saying he's thirty second, but he's so called twentieth. Sure,
- 32:24Speaker 2: So you can pay the twentieth best right tackle the
- 32:27Speaker 2: fifth most of any player at the position, or you
- 32:30Speaker 2: can play you call him all pro, so you say
- 32:33Speaker 2: bottom of all pro, the fourth best right guard, yeah,
- 32:36Speaker 2: or the fourth best guard, sorry, second most. And we
- 32:40Speaker 2: also just just to I want to get to something
- 32:43Speaker 2: with on Wu too, with him personally, but let's also
- 32:45Speaker 2: just think about for a second that if you have
- 32:48Speaker 2: an interior of let's just call it city for the
- 32:52Speaker 2: time being, right, because he's probably the more ready guy
- 32:54Speaker 2: if he's healthy over landon Robinson City. So, David Andrews
- 32:57Speaker 2: Mike on went, who you have a piece of the
- 33:01Speaker 2: line that should be above average to maybe even good.
- 33:06Speaker 1: Yeah, Yeah, the interior's fine.
- 33:08Speaker 2: Right, And so you have a decent interior of the line.
- 33:11Speaker 2: Do you know how valuable it is for quarterbacks that
- 33:13Speaker 2: they can step up in the pocket and have that
- 33:16Speaker 2: what you know what they called it shelf right? Yeah,
- 33:19Speaker 2: have this shelf clean to step up in the pocket,
- 33:22Speaker 2: not to mention the run game advantages that it brings
- 33:24Speaker 2: to the table too. With on when who particularly, what
- 33:28Speaker 2: I see with him when he plays tackle is that
- 33:30Speaker 2: he has a short corner. So every single drop that
- 33:34Speaker 2: you make that the quarterback that the rule of thumb
- 33:37Speaker 2: is that the quarterback needs to drop to ten yards,
- 33:41Speaker 2: So the linemen need to push the guys behind them
- 33:43Speaker 2: ten yards. Right, if you get the ten yards, the
- 33:46Speaker 2: quarterbacks at eleven and he gets sacked at eleven yards
- 33:49Speaker 2: and it's on the quarterbacks. Could you have to control
- 33:51Speaker 2: the depth of the drop. So with Mike on Wenhu,
- 33:55Speaker 2: he has trouble when he plays tackle with getting to
- 33:58Speaker 2: that ten yard land and the edge rusher has turned
- 34:02Speaker 2: the corner on him a little bit faster than they would.
- 34:04Speaker 2: It's not his fall, He's just not a tackle right.
- 34:07Speaker 2: And yeah, I'll allow for the fact that maybe if
- 34:09Speaker 2: he plays it for seventeen weeks he gets better, There's
- 34:12Speaker 2: no doubt about that. But when I watch him play,
- 34:14Speaker 2: I am watching a guard play tackle, like I'm not
- 34:17Speaker 2: watching a tackle play tackle. Yeah, last point, move on
- 34:20Speaker 2: from that right tackle two horse race again, ye choose
- 34:24Speaker 2: the cor for Cayden Wallace two actual right tackles by
- 34:29Speaker 2: trade that have played right tackle, and it goes back
- 34:32Speaker 2: and when you put the whole thing together. Low soo
- 34:35Speaker 2: Anderson on WHENU Andrews had to say Anderson and Andrews
- 34:40Speaker 2: on when WU a corp. Let's just say for now,
- 34:44Speaker 2: And I think that's right, Like you build up to
- 34:47Speaker 2: the rookies, you don't start with the rookies and then
- 34:48Speaker 2: go back to bet right, and then eventually at some
- 34:50Speaker 2: point you hope that Caden Wallace overtakes the cor four. Yeah,
- 34:54Speaker 2: and maybe Laden Robinson's better than City, So allowed for that.
- 34:59Speaker 2: We go back to the point of now, next year
- 35:02Speaker 2: you draft Will Campbell, he plays left tackle, and now
- 35:05Speaker 2: all of a sudden you actually have some an offensive line.
- 35:07Speaker 1: You have to find a new center in a year
- 35:09Speaker 1: or two, but like you have the pieces there, you
- 35:11Speaker 1: have Rice together.
- 35:12Speaker 2: So that to me is the best five. Not only
- 35:16Speaker 2: do I think it's just the best five players on
- 35:18Speaker 2: the roster at their you know that on the line,
- 35:21Speaker 2: but it's also everybody in their natural positions, Like nobody
- 35:25Speaker 2: in that line is playing out a position. And yeah,
- 35:27Speaker 2: you might be a little bit weaker at tackle still
- 35:29Speaker 2: just because of the talent on the roster, but that
- 35:31Speaker 2: there's nothing you can do about that. Well, the players
- 35:33Speaker 2: are the players.
- 35:33Speaker 1: And what people who defend the line will say is
- 35:36Speaker 1: you can have four strong spots in one week spot
- 35:39Speaker 1: and cover it up, which is another scar Neetkat philosophy
- 35:41Speaker 1: which I generally believe in. I do think there are
- 35:44Speaker 1: two caveats to that. Yeah, One, I don't think that
- 35:48Speaker 1: fifth spot can be left tackle.
- 35:49Speaker 2: I just don't.
- 35:50Speaker 1: Two, wherever the spot is beyond left tackle, I do
- 35:54Speaker 1: think there's a baseline to cover up. So to your point,
- 36:00Speaker 1: Mike o and Win, who is an interior player, is
- 36:03Speaker 1: gonna be a big part of helping cover up that
- 36:05Speaker 1: weakness wherever it is. Michael When is going to be
- 36:07Speaker 1: a big part of it because he is a blue
- 36:09Speaker 1: chip player. I would argue David Andrews is great and
- 36:14Speaker 1: he's been a great patriot. He's not quite the player
- 36:16Speaker 1: he once was. Mike go and Win, who's their best
- 36:18Speaker 1: line right and Mike go and when it was there,
- 36:21Speaker 1: But he is their one blue chip lineman. If you
- 36:24Speaker 1: play him at tackle, you lose that. He is not
- 36:26Speaker 1: a blue chip tackle.
- 36:27Speaker 2: Correct.
- 36:28Speaker 1: So if you're gonna scheme this whole thing around covering
- 36:32Speaker 1: up for a spot wherever it is special is gonna
- 36:35Speaker 1: be a right tackle. You need mikeel and Winn to
- 36:38Speaker 1: a guard to help you with that. He can hold
- 36:41Speaker 1: his own at tackle, he can't hold his own and
- 36:43Speaker 1: help somebody else, and you're gonna need him to do
- 36:46Speaker 1: that wherever he's playing in order to get the best
- 36:50Speaker 1: version of this line. Again, maybe it won't be great,
- 36:52Speaker 1: but to get the best version of it, you're gonna
- 36:55Speaker 1: need Mike and win who to help it.
- 36:56Speaker 2: It's just it's unfair to him, like they've forced him
- 36:59Speaker 2: to play right tackle because they haven't stocked the roster
- 37:03Speaker 2: well enough at the tackle position over the last two
- 37:05Speaker 2: to three years. That You're sorry, Mike, but you're you're
- 37:09Speaker 2: the best we got, so we got to play you
- 37:10Speaker 2: here like it's just it's such a bummer. I want
- 37:14Speaker 2: to talk a little bit more about Drake may especially
- 37:16Speaker 2: because we're not going to see him now for a
- 37:18Speaker 2: little while. But before we do that, we can take
- 37:21Speaker 2: some of the phone calls because I know you guys
- 37:22Speaker 2: have been waiting on the line here. Patty is in Agawam.
- 37:26Speaker 2: What's up, Patty?
- 37:28Speaker 3: What's up? Gents.
- 37:29Speaker 4: I'll make it quick because I know you don't have
- 37:30Speaker 4: much time today, but yeah, I can agree more about
- 37:34Speaker 4: Mike and Winu. I think they just got to figure
- 37:36Speaker 4: it out at right tackle and just let him play
- 37:38Speaker 4: right guard. And really quickly, I wanted to bring up
- 37:41Speaker 4: something you guys said last week that I've been thinking
- 37:44Speaker 4: about for a couple of years. And I know it's
- 37:46Speaker 4: off topic. It's not the Patriots, but it's got to
- 37:48Speaker 4: do with Joe Toney and not this past year Super Bowl,
- 37:52Speaker 4: but the year before when they beat the Eagles. I
- 37:54Speaker 4: started thinking in my head, I'm like, this guy might might.
- 37:58Speaker 3: Be a Hall of Famer.
- 37:59Speaker 4: And then I thought back to the Super Bowl where
- 38:02Speaker 4: the pass played the Rams and I know for a
- 38:04Speaker 4: fact because I saw it on NFL films like sound
- 38:07Speaker 4: bites where he did get one on ones with Aaron
- 38:09Speaker 4: Donald and not only like he didn't dominate him, but
- 38:13Speaker 4: like he held his own and like the biggest game
- 38:15Speaker 4: on the biggest stages.
- 38:17Speaker 5: You know of his life.
- 38:18Speaker 4: So to me, I think he's a Hall of Famer
- 38:20Speaker 4: and yeah, let's let's figure it out. Let's get on
- 38:23Speaker 4: wine at right guard. Word along and as soon as possible.
- 38:28Speaker 2: Guys, Yeah, thanks for the call of Patty. I think
- 38:32Speaker 2: get d Drake May in there as soon as possible
- 38:34Speaker 2: is enough. I think we heard the last point.
- 38:36Speaker 1: Yeah, but yeah, Joe Hall of Famer.
- 38:38Speaker 2: He's trending now.
- 38:40Speaker 1: He blanked Aaron Donald in the Super Bowl. I think
- 38:43Speaker 1: he blanked him in that Super Bowl.
- 38:45Speaker 2: One on one. Yeah, on that drive on the game
- 38:48Speaker 2: winning drive of the pass to Gronkowski hostage passed across
- 38:52Speaker 2: Gronkowski is uh, Joe Toney Aaron Donald one on one
- 38:55Speaker 2: in past pro.
- 38:57Speaker 1: So he had that dominated Fletcher Cox in another Super Bowl,
- 39:00Speaker 1: one of the more underrated play coxs. I'm saying, I
- 39:04Speaker 1: think as high as highly regarded as he is, one
- 39:07Speaker 1: of the more underrated players of his era. Yeah. You
- 39:10Speaker 1: know that Niners defensive front last year he held up
- 39:12Speaker 1: well yeah, yeah, he's the first battle Hall of Famer
- 39:15Speaker 1: to me.
- 39:16Speaker 2: So it's and we don't have enough time today. It
- 39:19Speaker 2: is not the show for this. But yeah, it's really
- 39:21Speaker 2: tough for interier offensive linemen to make it into the
- 39:23Speaker 2: Hall of Fame. Like it's really tough, like you have
- 39:26Speaker 2: to be you know, John Hannah, like you have to
- 39:28Speaker 2: be on that lone.
- 39:29Speaker 1: But I think what helps him because there's no stats
- 39:31Speaker 1: and people need something to latch onto super Bowl rings,
- 39:34Speaker 1: not just super Bowl rings. But you know Joe Tooney's
- 39:38Speaker 1: maybe not a name the common fans familiar with his
- 39:40Speaker 1: int your alignment. You know who are common names? Aaron Donald,
- 39:43Speaker 1: pletcher Cox. You show him beating up on those guys
- 39:47Speaker 1: in Super Bowls. You put that film on. I think
- 39:51Speaker 1: people are gonna warm up to him as Hall of
- 39:52Speaker 1: Famer pretty quickly.
- 39:53Speaker 2: I forgot to pay the bills. I'm so fired up
- 39:55Speaker 2: about the Jakobe Brissett thing. Hey Patriots fans, if you

- 40:52Speaker 2: Oh wait, sorry, Jeff, just one second. Sam is in Connecticut.
- 40:55Speaker 2: I like to go in order, Sam, what's up?
- 40:58Speaker 3: Thank you guys here?
- 40:59Speaker 2: Mat Yeah, go ahead, Sam.
- 41:02Speaker 3: Okay.
- 41:03Speaker 5: So I had a question about something you were saying today, Evan.
- 41:08Speaker 5: You mentioned how you were frustrated with Wolf, how he
- 41:11Speaker 5: didn't do enough for the offensive line this off season.
- 41:16Speaker 6: I just I just kind of wanted to ask whether.
- 41:18Speaker 5: Any particular offensive lineman that became available that you wanted
- 41:22Speaker 5: us to pursue, and if not, would you rather have
- 41:28Speaker 5: gone for offensive linemen in the draft rather than doubling
- 41:32Speaker 5: down on wide receivers. Then yeah, that's all I have.
- 41:37Speaker 2: Yeah, thanks for the call, Sam. Look the way I
- 41:40Speaker 2: look at it, Jonah Williams was an option?
- 41:42Speaker 1: Yeap?
- 41:43Speaker 2: It does sound like Johnah Williams struggled a little bit
- 41:45Speaker 2: in Arizona in camp.
- 41:47Speaker 1: And again, did you line up correctly?
- 41:50Speaker 2: Fair enough? And they also they decided that Chuck Sikor
- 41:54Speaker 2: for for about five million dollars was better value than
- 41:57Speaker 2: Jonah Williams at about ten or whatever that contract was.
- 42:01Speaker 1: I think it was around values. That's the point.
- 42:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm totally with.
- 42:06Speaker 3: It.
- 42:07Speaker 2: They looked at it a little bit too. Belichick in
- 42:10Speaker 2: I would almost say, yeah, and I know this used
- 42:12Speaker 2: to work out for Bill all the time, so I
- 42:14Speaker 2: understand that. But Bill would have done the same thing.
- 42:17Speaker 2: He would have Bill had spot the value is better here, right.
- 42:21Speaker 2: The other thing that I would say, I was a
- 42:23Speaker 2: huge Kingsley Sue Matia fan. Yeah, in the draft, the
- 42:28Speaker 2: Patriots took Canden Wallace, I want to say about like
- 42:31Speaker 2: ten picks or so, even if that after Kingsley Sue
- 42:34Speaker 2: Matia went in the draft, that's the second guest to me.
- 42:38Speaker 2: I like Jalen Polk as a player. I could be
- 42:40Speaker 2: talked into the fact that they should have been mad
- 42:43Speaker 2: and tackle at that pick as well. But where the
- 42:45Speaker 2: tackle board fell, the run a tackle in the first
- 42:49Speaker 2: round had kind of already happened. The run of tackle
- 42:51Speaker 2: at the second round didn't happen yet or hadn't started yet.
- 42:55Speaker 2: It started with Kingsley, who the Chiefs drafted, of course
- 42:58Speaker 2: because they don't know.
- 42:58Speaker 1: It started with Patrick Paul.
- 43:00Speaker 2: Yeah, Patrick Paul went first, but that was a little
- 43:02Speaker 2: bit earlier because like end of the second, and then
- 43:04Speaker 2: Kingsley went a little bit after that.
- 43:06Speaker 1: It was also under the second.
- 43:07Speaker 2: That to me would be the second guest.
- 43:09Speaker 1: Is so sixty eight is where they took Kyen Wallas.
- 43:12Speaker 1: They should have moved up from sixty eight and taken
- 43:14Speaker 1: eight if they weren't going to take attack, or they
- 43:15Speaker 1: took Jalen Polk, which I would have been fine taking
- 43:17Speaker 1: Patrick Paul there. I said that if they weren't going
- 43:20Speaker 1: to do that, they should have moved up from sixty
- 43:22Speaker 1: eight and put it this way, and it would have
- 43:24Speaker 1: cost him an extra pick. Who would you rather have?
- 43:28Speaker 1: We use Kingsley because that's your guy? Yeah, Kingsley period,
- 43:32Speaker 1: or Caden Wallace and Javon Baker.
- 43:36Speaker 2: Yeah, and those are Look, those are the tough ones
- 43:39Speaker 2: in the draft. Yeah right, if these are the either
- 43:42Speaker 2: oars or whatever you want to call it, the coin
- 43:44Speaker 2: flips in the draft is how I usually like to
- 43:46Speaker 2: call it that two years from now, Kingsley Supematia might
- 43:50Speaker 2: be a bust and Kevin Wallace and Javon Baker might
- 43:52Speaker 2: be stars for the Patriots. Right, But I would just
- 43:55Speaker 2: feel a whole lot more, you know better about this
- 43:58Speaker 2: offensive line, mainly because Kingsley is a left tackle.
- 44:03Speaker 3: Now.
- 44:03Speaker 2: He played both sides at BYU, but he has played
- 44:05Speaker 2: left tackle in games in college and you know, has
- 44:09Speaker 2: worked out there right like Kyd and Wallace had never
- 44:11Speaker 2: done that. So that would be the second guess your
- 44:14Speaker 2: guy was Patrick Paul that that that's fine too. Somewhere
- 44:17Speaker 2: in the draft they needed to jump on their tackle run.
- 44:20Speaker 1: It's specifically a guy. And here's I liked Kane Wallas
- 44:23Speaker 1: in the draft for them, and I thought they needed
- 44:25Speaker 1: two tackles. And I liked Kayden Wallace. I thought he
- 44:27Speaker 1: was gonna go in the fourth round. Yeah, but I
- 44:29Speaker 1: thought he would be a guy like ideally Chookes the
- 44:31Speaker 1: corps for is your starting right tackle and you're developing
- 44:35Speaker 1: Cainen Wallas bind it, which might end up happening anyway. Yeah,
- 44:38Speaker 1: but I wanted a true left tackle, not a guy
- 44:41Speaker 1: that was a convert.
- 44:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 44:42Speaker 1: I wanted a true left tackle, and that was Paul,
- 44:45Speaker 1: that was Kingsley. I would have even settled for Blake Fisher,
- 44:48Speaker 1: who played right tackle at the end of his career
- 44:50Speaker 1: in Notre Dame but had some left tackle experience.
- 44:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 44:52Speaker 1: Caiten Wallas, so I remember correctly played five snaps that
- 44:56Speaker 1: weren't it, right, he was a four year starter. In
- 44:58Speaker 1: those four years, he played five snaps that weren't right tackle,
- 45:01Speaker 1: and they were all at right guard.
- 45:03Speaker 2: Yeah, and the last one was was Coleman from TCU.
- 45:07Speaker 1: Who made a visit with him. I think, yes, so
- 45:10Speaker 1: he might have been a guard though. I well, he but.
- 45:12Speaker 2: His scouting report was really similar to to Kid and Wallace,
- 45:16Speaker 2: Isn't that Like some people viewed Caden Wallace as a
- 45:18Speaker 2: guy that might needed to move inside. Brendon Coleman at
- 45:22Speaker 2: TCU two years ago when they were in the National
- 45:24Speaker 2: Championship Game, he had an outstanding year. Yeah, last year
- 45:27Speaker 2: he was injured. He kind of tailed off a little bit,
- 45:30Speaker 2: didn't have as good of a season in his draft
- 45:32Speaker 2: eligible year, so that hurt his stock. But he was
- 45:34Speaker 2: a left tackle at TCU also, So it's just these
- 45:36Speaker 2: guys experience. Yeah, those are the guys that I would
- 45:39Speaker 2: just look at all right, Jeff is in Maine. What's up, Jeff? Good?
- 45:47Speaker 6: So, first of all, I completely agree with what you
- 45:50Speaker 6: said on the line with Loe and then either So
- 45:54Speaker 6: or Robinson Andrews and one of Wallace or troops. But
- 46:02Speaker 6: on a slightly different note, I had my fantasy draft
- 46:05Speaker 6: last night. Would you guys like to very quickly hear
- 46:07Speaker 6: the Manhattan Project?
- 46:09Speaker 2: Sure?
- 46:10Speaker 1: Oh, are you tweeting me?
- 46:12Speaker 4: Or no?
- 46:12Speaker 1: You called in or something said? Your fantasy team name
- 46:14Speaker 1: is the Manhattan Project? Yeah for that name? Sure?
- 46:16Speaker 2: Absolutely all right?
- 46:19Speaker 6: So Jalen it's a three wide receiver League ten team PPR.
- 46:23Speaker 6: So Jalen Hurts, Jamier Gibbs and Kenneth Walker receiver a'mnra,
- 46:30Speaker 6: Nico Collins, Cooper Cup Dalton and King Kid at tight end.
- 46:35Speaker 6: I have Rashid Rice the flex and insurance on the bench.
- 46:38Speaker 6: When he almost inevitably we can move back to that
- 46:43Speaker 6: Dolphins defense. Jason Sanders is a kicker and on the
- 46:46Speaker 6: bench DeAndre Swift, Perry McLaurin, Tyre Spears, Jake Ferguson, Jade
- 46:51Speaker 6: and Daniels. Had to get Jayleen Folk in there. Jalen Wright,
- 46:54Speaker 6: and I have Jonathan Brooks.
- 46:56Speaker 2: On ir, nice, good squad.
- 46:58Speaker 1: How are you going to name it the Manhattan Project?
- 47:00Speaker 1: Though not draft Joe Milton. Listen, we'll get there, all right,
- 47:03Speaker 1: all right, fair enough, we'll get there.
- 47:05Speaker 6: Listen, if I have a quarterback, go down. Well here's
- 47:07Speaker 6: the thing, Alex. You have to keep Joe Milton behind
- 47:10Speaker 6: closed doors or he's not.
- 47:11Speaker 1: The Manhattan That is true. That's a good point. You
- 47:13Speaker 1: got there.
- 47:14Speaker 2: Now, he's really behind closed doors, Jeff, because we are
- 47:16Speaker 2: not going to see practice anymore like we do in
- 47:18Speaker 2: training camps.
- 47:19Speaker 6: So oh yeah, absolutely we greennamed foughts for a lost albums.
- 47:23Speaker 6: I mean, he is.
- 47:25Speaker 1: I love it.
- 47:26Speaker 2: I love it. Thanks love all right, thanks for the call, Jeff.
- 47:29Speaker 2: Good luck with your fantasy league. I drafted my first
- 47:32Speaker 2: fantasy team last night. Also, by the way, really quickly, Jeff.
- 47:35Speaker 2: I think Terry mclaurin's going to be in your starting
- 47:36Speaker 2: lineup at some point because Jendon Daniels is coming. Jerry
- 47:39Speaker 2: Daniels is here. He's got to throw the ball to somebody.
- 47:42Speaker 2: It's gonna probably be scary, Terry. Uh So, I really
- 47:45Speaker 2: feel like he's going to be in your starting live
- 47:47Speaker 2: I had my first fantasy draft last night and I've
- 47:50Speaker 2: decided that I'm probably no longer good at fantasy because
- 47:53Speaker 2: all of my like fan emotions get the best of me.
- 47:57Speaker 2: Like you know, I told you earlier that I just
- 47:59Speaker 2: couldn't aft Rock Party. I couldn't bring myself to do that.
- 48:03Speaker 2: I did draft the Bengals defense because they're playing the
- 48:05Speaker 2: Patriots in Week one, so hopefully.
- 48:07Speaker 1: I wouldn't have admitted that.
- 48:09Speaker 2: Well, there you go. That's where we're at.
- 48:11Speaker 1: I have That's where I haven't played fantasy in years
- 48:13Speaker 1: because I just don't like doing it with this job,
- 48:16Speaker 1: because I can't sit down on Sunday and watch all
- 48:17Speaker 1: the games. I am back in the league this year.
- 48:20Speaker 1: I am doing a punter's only league with the guys
- 48:22Speaker 1: at CLNS. We are drafting next week, so I'll have
- 48:24Speaker 1: an update on that.
- 48:26Speaker 2: That's got you and Brian Heinzler and all over it.
- 48:28Speaker 1: Oh yeah, yeah, that's who's gonna get Bryce Behingers whoever
- 48:32Speaker 1: gets the top pick. I don't know how we're gonna
- 48:33Speaker 1: do the draft ord It's probably gonna be something stupid,
- 48:35Speaker 1: but I will take Bryce Bearinger one one.
- 48:37Speaker 2: There we go, all right, I know I see your
- 48:39Speaker 2: cause there were I promise you we'll get to you
- 48:41Speaker 2: in a minute, but there's a couple other, you know,
- 48:43Speaker 2: items I wanted to get to on the show. I
- 48:47Speaker 2: want to talk a little bit about Drake May because
- 48:49Speaker 2: we might not We don't know when we're going to
- 48:51Speaker 2: see him again in live game action, So the preseason
- 48:54Speaker 2: film is kind of the film at this point. For now,
- 48:58Speaker 2: at least, I know there was a lot j t.
- 49:01Speaker 2: O'Sullivan in the QB School. He made a lot of
- 49:05Speaker 2: of headlines here locally on some of his critiques of
- 49:08Speaker 2: of Drake May in the game against the Commanders. Uh,
- 49:12Speaker 2: just my two cents on the film I thought from
- 49:14Speaker 2: the Commanders full disclosure, I texted you. I always text
- 49:18Speaker 2: you on Mondays when I'm watching the film.
- 49:20Speaker 1: Get I get the instant panic reaction.
- 49:22Speaker 2: My my unfiltered, no fun intended, my unfiltered opinions, not
- 49:26Speaker 2: my Patriots dot com opinions, but my unfiltered opinions. And
- 49:30Speaker 2: I wasn't. I didn't love what I saw against the Comman.
- 49:34Speaker 1: I was shocked to hear president of the Drake Man
- 49:36Speaker 1: fan club talking the way of him was talking.
- 49:38Speaker 2: Yeah. The biggest thing that I would say with what
- 49:42Speaker 2: I saw on Sunday's tape. Look, the throw, the throw
- 49:47Speaker 2: making that he has is special, like his arm talent
- 49:50Speaker 2: is special. You know, he's a he's a true shot maker.
- 49:54Speaker 2: Like this guy has got that gene in him. Uh.
- 49:57Speaker 2: The throat of Jalen Polk on the cross route is beautiful.
- 50:01Speaker 2: I mean that is just an absolute time, you know,
- 50:06Speaker 2: moving from right to left. Yeah, for a right handed
- 50:09Speaker 2: quarterback is probably one of the harder throws to make accurately.
- 50:12Speaker 2: And he puts it right in stride on Jalen Polk's hands.
- 50:15Speaker 2: It was it was chef's kiss.
- 50:17Speaker 1: So is beautiful when I look at that play, Like,
- 50:19Speaker 1: if you're a Patriots fan and for those who are
- 50:22Speaker 1: maybe disappointed by the news today and you want someone
- 50:24Speaker 1: to cheer you up or you're just looking for something
- 50:26Speaker 1: from this preseason to hang your hat on in terms
- 50:28Speaker 1: of what direction is the organization going? What direction is
- 50:32Speaker 1: this football team heading? That's the play you go put
- 50:35Speaker 1: on a loop, Yeah, because that is your first round
- 50:38Speaker 1: quarterback hitting your second round receiver on a play that
- 50:42Speaker 1: is bread and butter for your new offensive coordinator.
- 50:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 50:44Speaker 1: When they drew this whole thing up back in February,
- 50:47Speaker 1: when they hired the staff and what do we want
- 50:49Speaker 1: this to look like in the end, that's it. And
- 50:52Speaker 1: I'm not saying they're gonna run that every play, but
- 50:54Speaker 1: what you know, and obviously I'm not comparing the players,
- 50:59Speaker 1: but in terms of the concepts within the offense, the
- 51:02Speaker 1: dig route from Brady to Edelman, yeah, right, or the
- 51:06Speaker 1: the the seam route from Brady Gronkley, those very core
- 51:10Speaker 1: concepts that they could just go to and rely on
- 51:13Speaker 1: and hammer the old reliables. Drake May under center play
- 51:17Speaker 1: action Jalen Polk intermediate crosser on the back side. Yeah,
- 51:22Speaker 1: that if this all works out, becomes one of those
- 51:24Speaker 1: old reliables for them. So you look at that, it's
- 51:27Speaker 1: the squid word mean from sponge rob right future, Like
- 51:30Speaker 1: that's the future right there.
- 51:31Speaker 2: Yeah, it was. It was a great play. The off
- 51:34Speaker 2: platform throw to kJ Osbourne is like I said earlier,
- 51:37Speaker 2: he is like I've been waiting six months to watch
- 51:39Speaker 2: Drake May make that play in the Patriot Right for him,
- 51:41Speaker 2: that was great. I thought some of his empty stuff
- 51:44Speaker 2: was better this week. Like last week. He looked a
- 51:46Speaker 2: little bit of hesitant on some of the empty throws,
- 51:48Speaker 2: you know, the empty concepts. I mean that he was
- 51:51Speaker 2: making you know all that I thought was really really good.
- 51:55Speaker 2: There's a lot of really good things. The scramble on
- 51:58Speaker 2: third down, seventeen yard scramble, those are the types of
- 52:00Speaker 2: things too. You know, not to pat myself on the back,
- 52:03Speaker 2: but the kJ Osborne throw that didn't count just gross.
- 52:08Speaker 2: And the scramble on third down backed up scramble by
- 52:12Speaker 2: the way, yeah, on third down. Those are the types
- 52:15Speaker 2: of things. When we talk about Drake may being a playmaker,
- 52:19Speaker 2: like that's what he can bring to elevate the offense.
- 52:22Speaker 2: He's not going to be. And this is sort of
- 52:24Speaker 2: where I want to get into some of the QB
- 52:25Speaker 2: school stuff we've talked about in the past with Drake,
- 52:29Speaker 2: like macro and micro like what are potential fatal flaws
- 52:34Speaker 2: for him in the NFL, and what are things that
- 52:37Speaker 2: are minutia things that he needs to improve probably to
- 52:39Speaker 2: be great, but it's not going to be the reason
- 52:42Speaker 2: why he's Zach Wilson two point zero right, And some
- 52:45Speaker 2: of the stuff that JT pointed out I wholeheartedly agree with.
- 52:49Speaker 2: But to me, a lot of that stuff falls into
- 52:52Speaker 2: the micro box. The fact that he invites pressure at
- 52:56Speaker 2: times or causes his own pressure and with his pocket movement.
- 53:01Speaker 2: That stuff can all be fixable and correctable. To me,
- 53:04Speaker 2: C J. Stroud had the same problem even just last year,
- 53:07Speaker 2: and he's actually talked about, you know, working on that.
- 53:11Speaker 2: The biggest thing that I see with it with Drake
- 53:13Speaker 2: May when it comes to that kind of stuff, is
- 53:15Speaker 2: that he just needs to quiet his feet down a
- 53:17Speaker 2: little bit and know when you know, let's call it
- 53:21Speaker 2: two steps, is is better than five. Like if he
- 53:26Speaker 2: feels pressure coming off his right side and the you know,
- 53:29Speaker 2: the tackle is getting beat. You know, he's feeling the
- 53:31Speaker 2: edge rush coming around instead of hitching up, you know
- 53:35Speaker 2: three times, like he keeps hitching right, he's just hit
- 53:37Speaker 2: hit hitch instead of doing that, just hitch up once,
- 53:41Speaker 2: reset your base, make a throw right. And sometimes like
- 53:44Speaker 2: it's the it's the Brady thing, it's the subtle pocket movement.
- 53:48Speaker 2: His pocket movement right now gets a little bit demonstrative
- 53:51Speaker 2: where it's not subtle. It's like all of a sudden,
- 53:53Speaker 2: you know, he feels pressure and he does a nice
- 53:55Speaker 2: job is sensing pressure, but that pressure becomes him moving
- 53:58Speaker 2: like five feet set of two feet, and we just
- 54:01Speaker 2: got to get him to be moving two feet to
- 54:03Speaker 2: get into the center of the pocket.
- 54:04Speaker 1: Getting rid of We talked about the slot receivers, but
- 54:07Speaker 1: with quarterbacks, you can apply it to getting rid of unneeded.
- 54:10Speaker 2: Movement, yeah, wasted movement. Correct. Yeah. So that that's a
- 54:13Speaker 2: big thing with him that he needs to continue to
- 54:15Speaker 2: work on. And when I look at his playing style
- 54:20Speaker 2: in some of his warts, it's not a great combination
- 54:23Speaker 2: with the offensive line. When you have an offensive line
- 54:25Speaker 2: that's going to be giving up pressure and now you
- 54:27Speaker 2: have a quarterback that also moves into pressure and has
- 54:30Speaker 2: a bad tendency to move into pressure, it's you're yeah,
- 54:34Speaker 2: it's a perfect storm exactly. So I understand that element
- 54:38Speaker 2: of it. But the arrow is still very much pointing upward.
- 54:42Speaker 2: But if I had to point to one thing with
- 54:45Speaker 2: his footwork that still is a work in progress, because
- 54:47Speaker 2: I think his footwork's gone on much better since North Carolina.
- 54:51Speaker 2: But the one thing that is still work in progress
- 54:53Speaker 2: is managing the pocket.
- 54:55Speaker 1: And I think some of that, I would say, the
- 54:57Speaker 1: one area of growth I want to see from me
- 54:59Speaker 1: still sailing like a few too many short passes for
- 55:02Speaker 1: my liking. He had one in the game last week.
- 55:04Speaker 1: I think he had one of pop too, didn't he
- 55:06Speaker 1: that he put like.
- 55:07Speaker 2: Yeah, so that one was interesting, Like that one Pop
- 55:10Speaker 2: gets like re routed by the linebacker coming over the middle,
- 55:14Speaker 2: and I think Pop actually would have ended up where
- 55:17Speaker 2: he threw it.
- 55:18Speaker 1: Are you sure that was like way over said.
- 55:21Speaker 2: He jumped through it, which maybe he didn't have to.
- 55:25Speaker 1: So I guess this is my point, like if he
- 55:26Speaker 1: can just settle down and hit some more of those
- 55:29Speaker 1: short throws like that would be because you start sailing
- 55:33Speaker 1: those kind of throws, they're gonna.
- 55:34Speaker 2: Get picked off that and that's a good point.
- 55:37Speaker 3: He had.
- 55:37Speaker 1: He had one against the EG I think was well
- 55:39Speaker 1: Mitchell Wilcox caught one, and then he had another one
- 55:41Speaker 1: that was incomplete. I don't remember who was too, but
- 55:43Speaker 1: he's still a little And this goes back to the
- 55:45Speaker 1: start of camp. Do you remember the first week. I
- 55:46Speaker 1: was like, my big critique was, I think he's adrenaline's
- 55:49Speaker 1: running little high. I think he's a little too hyped
- 55:51Speaker 1: up and the balls getting away from him. I just
- 55:53Speaker 1: if he can settle down on some of that shorter stuff,
- 55:55Speaker 1: because I think what happens is on a lot of
- 55:58Speaker 1: those throws I'm talking about, I'm trying to remember like
- 56:00Speaker 1: each one of them all index but yeah, they come
- 56:04Speaker 1: with pressure, and I wonder if it's just everything sped
- 56:07Speaker 1: up and there's an adrenaline jump from I gotta get
- 56:09Speaker 1: rid of this ball.
- 56:10Speaker 2: Shoot, here's pressure.
- 56:11Speaker 1: Go and he ends up, you know, putting too much
- 56:13Speaker 1: on it, and that goes to the exaggerated movements as well.
- 56:16Speaker 1: He seems to be a little calmer under pressure. And look,
- 56:19Speaker 1: no quarterbacks perfect under pressure. I don't think there's one
- 56:21Speaker 1: quarterback that's better under pressure than worse. But if you
- 56:24Speaker 1: can just be a little bit calmer under pressure, just
- 56:26Speaker 1: kind of take that half second to breathe and just
- 56:30Speaker 1: not overreact to it, that'll go a long way.
- 56:33Speaker 2: I know I always go back to Josh Allen with him,
- 56:36Speaker 2: but it feels really similar to some of those other
- 56:39Speaker 2: quarterbacks that had, you know, Josh Allen, Jordan Love. I
- 56:42Speaker 2: haven't made in after further of you on Monday. Some
- 56:47Speaker 2: of the things that he does is a little Aaron Rodgers, You're.
- 56:49Speaker 1: Not the first person do that. It's been a big
- 56:51Speaker 1: take coming away from that game.
- 56:52Speaker 2: Early Aaron Rodgers. Yeah, I'm not talking about MVP Aaron Rodgers.
- 56:55Speaker 2: I'm talking about Aaron Rodgers, rookie. Aaron Rodgers, Right, back
- 56:58Speaker 2: with the Packers.
- 56:59Speaker 1: Third year.
- 57:00Speaker 2: Yeah, sure, third year Aaron Rodgers back with the Packers.
- 57:04Speaker 2: He does things that you would tell normal court, like
- 57:10Speaker 2: if mac Jones was out there throwing the way that
- 57:12Speaker 2: Drake May throws, then we would all be like, you know,
- 57:15Speaker 2: the coaches would just be up in arms, like it'd
- 57:17Speaker 2: be like, what, you can't do this, Like he can't
- 57:20Speaker 2: play this way, Like you can't throw off your back foot, right,
- 57:24Speaker 2: I don't care how open Mike Kasicki is in Germany
- 57:27Speaker 2: and Frankfurt, and you know, running into the end zone,
- 57:29Speaker 2: you don't have the arm to be fading away on
- 57:32Speaker 2: this throw. Drake May, almost to a fault, has such
- 57:36Speaker 2: a gifted skill set in terms of his physical tools
- 57:40Speaker 2: that he can sort of get away with some of
- 57:43Speaker 2: this stuff. And so now the question is, you know,
- 57:46Speaker 2: how much do you coach it out of him? Because
- 57:48Speaker 2: you don't want to make him robotic.
- 57:50Speaker 1: You don't want to make them fight himself. This is
- 57:52Speaker 1: something that's really important for Patriots fans to understand here.
- 57:54Speaker 1: So we already discussed Drake May for hopefully the next
- 57:56Speaker 1: like fifteen years. Yeah, I don't think his mechanics are
- 57:59Speaker 1: going to be perfect, like you said, you would never
- 58:01Speaker 1: teach a quarterback to play the way he plays, But
- 58:04Speaker 1: there are some guys that make it work, and if
- 58:06Speaker 1: it works, you don't fight it. Aaron Rodgers is a
- 58:07Speaker 1: good comp I also go Steph Curry right, Like, you
- 58:09Speaker 1: would not teach somebody to shoot a basketball mechanically the
- 58:14Speaker 1: way Steph Curry shoots it, like you would if a
- 58:16Speaker 1: kid showed up at camp shooting like that, they'd make
- 58:18Speaker 1: a ton of changes. But obviously it obviously works for
- 58:21Speaker 1: Steph Curry. He's the great shooter of all time, so
- 58:24Speaker 1: nobody's gonna touch that, but it works for him. I
- 58:26Speaker 1: don't think anybody else can can mimic that, So you know,
- 58:30Speaker 1: it's not to say Drake may is gonna be Steph Curry.
- 58:32Speaker 1: But like, there's just some guys where they suck mechanically,
- 58:37Speaker 1: for lack of a better term, there's some pictures like
- 58:39Speaker 1: this too, some Major League baseball pitchers. Just the stuff
- 58:42Speaker 1: they do mechanically doesn't make sense and you would never
- 58:44Speaker 1: teach it. But for that one individual, it works, and
- 58:47Speaker 1: it works and they can compete at a high level
- 58:49Speaker 1: with those mechanics. And I'm of the belief when you
- 58:51Speaker 1: have those athletes. There might be things on the on
- 58:53Speaker 1: the boundary you clean up here and there and say,
- 58:56Speaker 1: you know, for instance, one with Drake may that that
- 58:58Speaker 1: you can clean up without. I think mess with him
- 59:00Speaker 1: too much. Is just tightening up his release and getting
- 59:03Speaker 1: the ball out quicker. Unless of a loop you can
- 59:04Speaker 1: tighten that up some of the other stuff. It works.
- 59:08Speaker 1: I'm not gonna fight it. If you get to a
- 59:09Speaker 1: point where he's struggling, then maybe you go in and
- 59:11Speaker 1: you take a closer look. But it's working for him,
- 59:14Speaker 1: and we're gonna hear a lot here in New England
- 59:18Speaker 1: that his mechanics suck and people are gonna if he's good,
- 59:20Speaker 1: people are gonna point to that and say, no, he's
- 59:22Speaker 1: actually overrated. Look at his footwork, look at this, look
- 59:24Speaker 1: at that. If it works, it works with Rogers, with Curry.
- 59:29Speaker 1: I don't know why I'm blanking on the pitchers, but
- 59:31Speaker 1: there's a bunch of them. If it worked, like Kenley
- 59:35Speaker 1: Jansen has that weird hitch right, Yeah, you probably wouldn't
- 59:38Speaker 1: coach a kid to do that. If a kid showed
- 59:40Speaker 1: up doing that at a camp, saying what the hell
- 59:41Speaker 1: are you doing? Stop doing that? That's not how you
- 59:43Speaker 1: throw a baseball. But it works for him. So if
- 59:46Speaker 1: if it works for him, then you know, all the
- 59:49Speaker 1: power too. You you've kind of earned the right to
- 59:50Speaker 1: do it.
- 59:51Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's it's an interesting balancing act. I guess
- 59:56Speaker 2: with what to fix and what not to fix, and
- 59:58Speaker 2: I don't.
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: T willis is what I was trying to Oh, yeah,
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: well it worked for a little bit.
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: Yeah, I definitely see some of the things, you know,
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: with his footwork that again, you wouldn't teach a kid that,
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: you know, an eighth grade kid, and I was trying
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: to pick up playing quarterback for the and you wouldn't
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: teach him how to throw it, you know, with his
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: base like that. But he's so he has so much
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: talent in his arm that it just doesn't necessarily matter
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: for him as much. And that's the thing that's gonna
- 1:00:23Speaker 2: you know, the Rogers comp to me the biggest, you know,
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: in I almost wonder if maybe I'm seeing some young
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: Rogers because of Alex van Pelt, Like, I don't dismiss that.
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: It's the footwork and the system that Aaron Rodgers was
- 1:00:41Speaker 2: playing in, so I like they might be coaching him similarly.
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: But Rogers was notorious and is still notorious for throwing
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: with both feet off the ground like that is not
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: something that most people do, but Aaron Rodgers does, and
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: the Pop Douglas one is like that exaggerated. I'm not
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: talking about those ones. There's other ones in the game
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: where both feet come off the ground and he almost
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: like jumps into the throw and uh and you're like, well,
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: you know, why is he doing that? And you look
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: at the throw and it's like it's on the guy's
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: hands right right, And so there's just little things like that.
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: At the end of the day. Philip Rivers is another one.
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: I'm thinking more examples down. Yeah, if you're putting it
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: on the guy's hands, I don't really care how you
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: threw it. In all honesty, I don't if you're putting
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: on his hands, consistently throw it behind your back for
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: all I care. If you're getting the ball there, You're
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: getting the ball there.
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: There's gonna be a lot of this with him once yea,
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: once he takes over as the starter, which.
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: So I'm establishing my take now if the results are there,
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: I don't care about his mechanics. Yeah, I'm like, yeah,
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: he threw for three hundred yards, But did you see
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: his feet?
- 1:01:42Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: Well I also saw him throw for three hundred yards
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: to win the game, so I don't really care what that was.
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: Matt Jones threw for three hundred against the Eagles last year.
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: Well, you made the different. The physical talent is let
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: me rephrase that we threw for He threw for forty
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: five hundred yards this season. Did you see his feet? Yeah,
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: I saw him throw for forty five hundred yard. I
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: don't really care where his feet were. Yeah, it consistently
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: is a better example season.
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: First case, it's a tough one because you look for
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: things on film of repeatable mechanics, and what you worry
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: about is that some of the things that Drake does
- 1:02:15Speaker 2: or not is not necessarily receptive to consistent, repeatable accuracy
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: down the field. And we talk about some of the
- 1:02:23Speaker 2: sprays and some of the things that he when he
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: does have issues with the accuracy. You're like, well, if
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: he was more consistent with his base and with his footwork,
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: then maybe that would clean up some of those issues.
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: But I actually I hear everybody on the sprays, it
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: does look bad, Like the one to Taekwon is not close.
- 1:02:41Speaker 2: That's not an NFL throw, Like NFL quarterbacks don't normally
- 1:02:45Speaker 2: miss slants by.
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: And if he starts missing those throws, then you take
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: a close look at his mechanics.
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: But yeah, yeah, but I also would just say with
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: that and then and then we can move on from this.
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: That to me is all so in the category of
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: micro because like we're really talking about like two throws
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: a game, right, So if he's missing a slant to
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: Taekwon Thornton and maybe you know a pop pass or
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: lie you know, lay up past to Pop Douglas there
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: on the crossing route, Yeah, it's not ideal that he's
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: missing you know, these short game throws or these uh
- 1:03:20Speaker 2: you know these you know short throws. But if he
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: then follows that up with like a fifteen yard completion,
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: then that's just it's fine. What we are, what I'm
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: getting at is that for all of us, myself including
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: we all need to sort of get used to a
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: different style of quarterback play with him, and.
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: He doesn't need to set Drew Brees's career completion record
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: to be a success.
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a different style. Even even though Mac was
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: nowhere near Brady's stratosphere, Yeah, he was still more in
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: the Brady mold in terms of way stylistically what he
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: was good at. And we are our eyes right now
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: as Patriots fans have been trained to the pocket, precision,
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: mechanically sound passer, and Drake May is never going to
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: be that. You know, I would go watch Mahomes, Rogers
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: love obviously Josh Allen, like those are the guys that
- 1:04:19Speaker 2: he's gonna be mimicking. And if he gets to that level,
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: it's not going to be Tom Brady. It's not gonna
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: be If he fails, it's not gonna be mac Jones.
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: It's not because it's gonna be the same reasons that
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: mac Jones failed, so that that is an adjustment for
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: all of us. Like the touchdown that he threw to
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: Kevin Harris. When I saw him even live watching that,
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: I was like, uh oh, because I thought I was
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: gonna be a pick six, And then you remember that
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: he's throwing one hundred and one miles an hour, right,
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: and it's like, that's a throw that wasn't in mac
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: Jones's bag. Now, I wouldn't necessarily suggest doing that often,
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: like I didn't love that throw, to be honest, but
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: he has that kind of velocity in his arm. So
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: it's different. It's just different. And you tell me you
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: texted me on Monday you wanted Josh Allen. You got
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: Josh Alla.
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: You don't get to You don't get to campaign for
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: this exciting playground quarterback and then complain about them and
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: then bitch when he doesn't have the mechanics, Like, no,
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: it's if that's what you wanted, then you should have
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: been a JJ McCarthy guy. But you wanted the exciting,
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: high ceiling guy. This is what Like, he's not gonna
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: be perfect. You can't say, all right, well, I want
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: him to be the most electric playmaker ever and be
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: the most tightly mechanically wound quarterback. Like that's just it
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: doesn't exist.
- 1:05:31Speaker 2: Yep, all right, let's get back to the calls. And
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: I do want to give our roster takes here in
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: a second as well. But Dave is in Maine. What's up, Dave? Hey, guys,
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: how's going good?
- 1:05:43Speaker 7: So I'll keep it kind of quick. I'm disappointed. Like
- 1:05:46Speaker 7: a lot of people, I think, actually, Drake May is
- 1:05:50Speaker 7: the one that gives us the best chance to win,
- 1:05:52Speaker 7: because the only way the offense can overcome itself. I
- 1:05:59Speaker 7: think is with little Razzle Dazzle at quarterback, and Drake
- 1:06:02Speaker 7: may gives you that Jacoby Brissette does not. And I
- 1:06:06Speaker 7: get my question to you, is you kind of.
- 1:06:09Speaker 6: Agree with that?
- 1:06:09Speaker 7: And also, what are you guys scared at all that
- 1:06:15Speaker 7: Mayo can lose the locker room this way by riding
- 1:06:19Speaker 7: it out with Brissette over may because you know, the
- 1:06:23Speaker 7: players must see it. We see it, so surely the
- 1:06:25Speaker 7: players see it. And at what point does do you
- 1:06:27Speaker 7: think that becomes a problem. And I'll take it off
- 1:06:31Speaker 7: the air with that.
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: Thank you, guys, Thanks Dave, thanks for the call.
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: Two questions.
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: Yeah, to the second point, it doesn't get to that point.
- 1:06:39Speaker 2: I feel like until they start losing. Yeah, like right now,
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: maybe they see it in practice that Drake May is
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: a better quarterback, but they might say to them they
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: can convince themselves, yeah, but Jacoby is the more pro
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: ready quarterback.
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: I also think Jacoby is a popular guy in that
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: locker room. I know a lot of fans don't like him,
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: which I think is unfair.
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: That's crazy to me, Like there's he's such a a
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: good guy, like.
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: Well, it's like he's standing in the way of Drake
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: May and I get there annoyed by that. That's not
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: on him. And he's a really good teammate. He's a
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: good leader. He's a guy that people gravitate towards. He's
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: always been that. He's at an indie with Andrew Luck. Yeah,
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: like he was a very popular player in that locker room,
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: and obviously Andrew Luck was the starter. But I think
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: there's a level of belief in him, and that kind
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: of leads me to my first point to the first
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: question about you know you need razzle dazzle for the
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: offense to work. Is Drake May gonna give you the
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: most razzle dazzle? Yes, of course, I wouldn't say Jacoby
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: Brissett doesn't give you that. He he can do some
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: pretty creative things with ball in his hands, maybe not
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: as regularly as Drake May, and I don't know that
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: he's gonna be as spectacular, but he's not exactly a statue.
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: He's not exactly gay manager either. Like he he can
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: make plays out of nothing occasionally if he's given the opportunity.
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree with the overall point that if you
- 1:07:55Speaker 2: were just trying to put the offense on the field,
- 1:07:58Speaker 2: that kind of gave you the best chance to win
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: right now, that I would probably say that Drake May's
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: improvisational skills is what I would call it. That the
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: kJ Osborne touchdown only happens because it's Drake May, and
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: maybe those plays it is it's easier on the receivers.
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: You know, there's the inn in the ang with the
- 1:08:16Speaker 2: offensive line, but it can be easier on the offensive line.
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: But in particular, if you don't have great receivers, when
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: you have a guy that can do those kinds of things,
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: it's no matter what. Even if your receivers aren't great,
- 1:08:28Speaker 2: it's really hard to cover in the NFL for like
- 1:08:30Speaker 2: five six seconds, right, So if the quarterback's moving around,
- 1:08:33Speaker 2: then it just gives the receivers time to uncover and
- 1:08:36Speaker 2: get open down the field. So I agree with all
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: of that, but I don't think that that's necessarily where
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: they're at in terms of Drake May playing. They're more
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: worried about in structure, like how is he handling the
- 1:08:48Speaker 2: instructure system, running the plays that are being called, and
- 1:08:52Speaker 2: also obviously you know pre snap and all that kind
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: of stuff too. That's more important in terms of checking
- 1:08:58Speaker 2: boxes to get him on the field than just saying well,
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: he's just gonna run around and make plays like because
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: that's not as much as that's an element. Uh you know,
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: you watch Patrick Mahomes play, I would say seventy five
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: to eighty percent of Patrick Mahomes's plays are in structure.
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: It's just the out of structure stuff for the highlights, right,
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: those are the things that make it onto Sports Center.
- 1:09:18Speaker 2: So that's why everybody pays attention to that. But for
- 1:09:20Speaker 2: the most part him Alan like those guys play in
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: structure a lot more than you think, and so that's
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: where they're trying to get with. Get to with Drake
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: may All right, let's uh, Eldred is in North Carolina.
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: Le's up? Aldred?
- 1:09:33Speaker 3: Hey good?
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: How are you all right?
- 1:09:37Speaker 3: Proud of you? Man? Out of your Qluorida back and
- 1:09:43Speaker 3: I gotta see it. I'm still at Missouri show. Why
- 1:09:48Speaker 3: you know, Like I said, what you brought up is
- 1:09:51Speaker 3: what we saw. But I got me. He does look better.
- 1:09:54Speaker 3: He does look better what he did in North Carolina,
- 1:09:57Speaker 3: but still got jump things where it is the short
- 1:10:01Speaker 3: that's worried. You can throw deep, but it's the short thing.
- 1:10:03Speaker 3: But getting off of that and make sureall question it, okay,
- 1:10:08Speaker 3: I got laughed at on PU for bringing this up,
- 1:10:10Speaker 3: so I'm gonna bring it up again. Okay, you got
- 1:10:13Speaker 3: a franchise quarterback, right, So my question is why not.
- 1:10:18Speaker 3: I know you've got draft capital and you got money. Okay,
- 1:10:22Speaker 3: it's a tackle. Like I said, if somebody told me,
- 1:10:25Speaker 3: well they already paid him the extension, yes, but they
- 1:10:29Speaker 3: got another guy in this place that's gonna take his place.
- 1:10:32Speaker 3: So you've been hurt for a couple of games. You
- 1:10:34Speaker 3: don't miss like three or four games for the last
- 1:10:37Speaker 3: three years. But he's breaking number two behind Trent Williams.
- 1:10:41Speaker 3: That's about Durris off for Minnesota. Why not give up
- 1:10:45Speaker 3: a first and a player to go get that guy?
- 1:10:49Speaker 3: And then my other question is Brown from from Cleveland
- 1:10:54Speaker 3: on the right hand side tackle. Somebody jumped over him.
- 1:10:58Speaker 3: They're both young, they're both I've got and maybe you
- 1:11:02Speaker 3: get get out of Brown. So Deres, you ain't gotta
- 1:11:06Speaker 3: worry about because he's the NFL's tackle left. Why not?
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: And I take you off the air, Thank you, thanks, Eldred.
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: I appreciate it. I mean off the top. We've got
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: Christian Darris is an excellent player.
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: He's not getting traded.
- 1:11:19Speaker 2: I don't think he's getting traded those types of players.
- 1:11:21Speaker 2: I mean, Trent Williams got traded. I guess that's the
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: exception to the rule.
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: Trent Williams aggressively shot his way out of Washington. Yeah, great,
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: Like that wasn't even your typical player talks his way
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: out Like that makes what Brandon Ayuku is doing right
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: now look like child's playing. Yeah, and I don't fault
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: him because that organization is a mess, Like don't. I
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: don't want this. I don't want to come off as
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: me picking on Trent Williams, but yeah, if it tackle
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: shoots his way out of his team, the Patriots absolutely
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: make the call. Short of that, Darris How is not
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: getting traded.
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: Yeah, Deris is a great player. I think he's one
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: of the best tackles in the league. I love Derris
- 1:11:54Speaker 2: How in the draft too. I mean you could just
- 1:11:57Speaker 2: see it. Remember, you know, there's when you watch guys
- 1:11:59Speaker 2: like that in college and they just like look like
- 1:12:02Speaker 2: their varsity against JV against power five competition, Like this
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: guy's gonna be really really good. When you turn on
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: the film with Drris, you you knew right away, Oh
- 1:12:11Speaker 2: that's that's the guy. I'm supposed to be watching, like
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: you didn't even need to look for a number. He's
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: he's a really good player. I highly doubt that Minnesota
- 1:12:20Speaker 2: with I know he's hurt, but JJ Justin Jefferson under contract,
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: like they're they're thinking of him being JJ McCarthy's blindside
- 1:12:29Speaker 2: protector for the next five years, right like that that
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: I would have to think that that's where they're at.
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: But if he's available, then I'm obviously all for it.
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: I just don't necessarily see it.
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: Who is the real quick I just want to clear
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: it up because I phrased that wrong. I forgot the
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: exact situation. Trent Williams didn't exactly shoot his way out
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: of Washington. He had cancer. The team doctors noticed it
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: and downplayed it. Oh and then it turned out to
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: be serious. And he was basically so mad at the
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: organization rightfully that he said he didn't want to play
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: there anymore. So that's that situation is not happening every day.
- 1:13:03Speaker 2: So who was he talking about the brown I don't know.
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: On the Browns.
- 1:13:08Speaker 2: Yeah, so the Browns have so I think Conklin. So
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: they have Conklin and they have Dewan Jones.
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: I think Conklin got passed on the depth chart. I
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: think he lost a starting job, maybe.
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: To Dewan Jones because that's who they're they're.
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: Maybe he was talking about Dwan Jones. I Lovedwan Jones.
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: Yeah, maybe maybe Conklin because Dewan Jones they just drafted
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: last year and maybe he's coming and I think Conklin
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: was on pup for a little while or too.
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: I I would take Conkland, but I don't know that
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: i'd give up. I like, if you're gonna give up
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: a third round pick for Jack Conklin, right, which I
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: don't know, am I offen that assessment.
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: Of probably not? Because he's a starting tackle.
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: Right, So you just Conkland's the right tack He's a
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: right tackle. He's not playing on the weft side.
- 1:13:47Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: Yeah, he just used a third round pick on the
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: right tackling Kayden Wallace. Yeah, at this point, I'd rather
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: see what he has and and if not, you just
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: blew two top one hundred picks and now there's no
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: path for Kayden wall And he burned that pick. You know,
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: I know people will be like, well, you're complaining they
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: don't have enough offensive line talent. Now you don't want
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: him to trade for somebody. Well, I do want them
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: to see what they have and the guys they did draft,
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: because what happens if Conklin like ages out, you never
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: developed Wallace. Now you blew two third round picks for nothing.
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: So I would at least see what you have in
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: Kan Wallace at this point. If if Jack Hankin was a
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: left tackle, I may feel differently. But they don't need
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: to trade a third round pick for left tackle right now,
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: if for a right tackle right now, they just don't
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: need to do that.
- 1:14:30Speaker 2: That's fair. Let's take this last call and then we'll
- 1:14:31Speaker 2: give our roster reaction to wrap it up. Mark is
- 1:14:34Speaker 2: in Connecticut.
- 1:14:35Speaker 8: What's up, Mark, Devin Alex, how you guys doing today?
- 1:14:39Speaker 2: Being great? Thanks Kahn, Thank you.
- 1:14:44Speaker 8: Donovan Smith the tackle who used to play for Kansas City.
- 1:14:48Speaker 8: What is the deal with this guy? He's been on
- 1:14:50Speaker 8: the open market all over the offseason. I would have
- 1:14:53Speaker 8: thought that we would have picked him up because I
- 1:14:54Speaker 8: believe he's a left tackle. Any idea on what's going
- 1:14:57Speaker 8: on with this guy?
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: Yeah, he's just done. He's like and a lot of
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: people ask gout. David Boctiari, Charles Leno. Who's the other
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: one who was with the Cardinals.
- 1:15:08Speaker 2: With the Cardinals, there's another tackle.
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: J Humphries, and those guys had serious, serious injuries last year.
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: Baciari last like three years. So Donovan Smith's the one
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: guy who's healthy, and so you'd think maybe he's the
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: guy he was really bad last year. Yeah, I got
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: call it for like a million penalty if he takes
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: another step, if the step back he took from twenty
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: two to twenty three, if he takes the same size
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: step into twenty four. I actually don't think he's better
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: than what the Patriots have. Yeah, they may see that too. Thanks,
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: I appreciate it.
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: Sorry to get you off the line so quick, but
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: we're up against a little bit. Yeah, with Donovan Smith,
- 1:15:49Speaker 2: it did sound like just talking to you know, some
- 1:15:51Speaker 2: of the Chiefs reporters that I know that he got
- 1:15:54Speaker 2: better towards the end of the season last year and
- 1:15:56Speaker 2: it was like okay in the playoffs. Obviously won the
- 1:15:58Speaker 2: Super Bowl, so he couldn't have been nap, but it
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: was rough there for a while with him, especially with
- 1:16:04Speaker 2: the penalties.
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: I mean, I wouldn't be a post to them signing him.
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: I just don't think he's a guaranteed answer.
- 1:16:08Speaker 2: I just feel like if he was, if he was
- 1:16:10Speaker 2: still good, Uh, you don't just leave left tackles like
- 1:16:14Speaker 2: that available, you know, on the open market. Like if
- 1:16:17Speaker 2: teams thought that he could still play, then I'm sure
- 1:16:19Speaker 2: that he'd be he'd be on a roster. YEA, all right,
- 1:16:22Speaker 2: I really uh, you know, just wanted to wrap it up.
- 1:16:25Speaker 2: Fifty three man roster. This probably would have been what
- 1:16:28Speaker 2: we led the show with until we got the quarterback news.
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: But frankly, it wasn't all that interesting. I'm just gonna
- 1:16:35Speaker 2: be honest, and uh, some of that has to do
- 1:16:38Speaker 2: with the state of the roster, Like it just got
- 1:16:41Speaker 2: to call a spade a spade. There wasn't a whole
- 1:16:43Speaker 2: lot of NFL talent that they were like, oh man,
- 1:16:48Speaker 2: we got like all these really good players. We got
- 1:16:50Speaker 2: to pick from all these guys. So I wasn't a
- 1:16:53Speaker 2: ton of surprises. I the one. I wouldn't even call
- 1:16:56Speaker 2: him a surprise. I just think if you had to say,
- 1:16:58Speaker 2: you know, Evan, what was your big surprise cut, I
- 1:17:01Speaker 2: would probably say Kevin Harris. But he ended up back
- 1:17:04Speaker 2: on the on the practice squad. He clears waivers and
- 1:17:06Speaker 2: They probably were okay with rolling the dice there, thinking
- 1:17:10Speaker 2: we'll get one of Terrell Jennings or Kevin Harris back
- 1:17:12Speaker 2: on the practice squad as kind of like a between
- 1:17:14Speaker 2: the tackles, you know, power back and that capacity, so
- 1:17:19Speaker 2: they get him back. I wasn't really too shot by
- 1:17:23Speaker 2: anything else.
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: No, Josh Bloodsoe would be the other one. I thought
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: he had a really good close to the summer, good
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: final couple preseason games, and more surprised he's not back
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: on the practice squad. He may look at it and say, hey,
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: look I played well, Yeah, I'm gonna hold out. I'm
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: gonna wait till I get a roster shot. And he
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: has had a right to do that obviously. But besides that,
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: I mean, I wasn't you know, some other names people
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: know obviously, but I wasn't super surprised by Sean Wade,
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: Jalen Rager. They cut he's back, and I think he'll
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: be back on the active roster at some point. How
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: many of these waiver claim guys so none of the
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: waiver claimed guys. Eric Johnson is a fine depth player. Yeah,
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: Demontree Hunter I like as like a project tackle, but
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: I put him in the same boat as like Tyrone
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: Wheatley where he's starting games this year. I'm worried. Maybe
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: you see what he is down the road. But how
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: many of those four waiver guys you think are still
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: on the team like week ten?
- 1:18:14Speaker 2: It's a good question. I agree with you with Uh,
- 1:18:18Speaker 2: Trey Hunter, by the way, you don't have to Is
- 1:18:20Speaker 2: that what he goes back? Yeah? Is it Hunter?
- 1:18:22Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: Because they have two guys name Hunter. The linebacker's name
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: is Hunter.
- 1:18:25Speaker 3: Two.
- 1:18:25Speaker 2: I thought that call.
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: Linebacker's name is Curtis Curtis Hunter, Curtis Jacobs, Curtis Jacobs.
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: Oh no, there's two Jacobs. It's Demontray Jacobs. That's what
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: it is. He throw Trey Jacobs. I've struggled with this
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: for two days now.
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: We need to learn these things.
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: Yeah, Trey Jacobs is the tackle, the other tackle they
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: signed as a guard. Yeah, he's not really Zach Thomas,
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: which is easy to Zak Thomas, which is easy. Not
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: but Zach Thomas is not the linebacker, which also confused
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: me because Zak Thomas line up.
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: Why do I feel like your names are wrong? Right now?
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: Can you pull?
- 1:18:53Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 1:18:53Speaker 2: Can you pull me?
- 1:18:54Speaker 3: Like?
- 1:18:54Speaker 2: I just it doesn't sound right? To me. But the
- 1:18:57Speaker 2: Tyrone Wheatley comp I think is really good for right, Like,
- 1:19:00Speaker 2: I feel like that's that's where I'm at with him.
- 1:19:04Speaker 2: Really like a big dude like six six three fifteen
- 1:19:07Speaker 2: three twenty like looks looks the part coming off the
- 1:19:10Speaker 2: bus athletic can get out into some space, Like there's
- 1:19:13Speaker 2: some film of him from the preseason on in space,
- 1:19:16Speaker 2: you know, on toss plays, you know, pin polls, things
- 1:19:19Speaker 2: like that. That's pretty impressive with his movement skill, but
- 1:19:22Speaker 2: he's raw and is gonna have to develop.
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: All right, Trade Jacobs, Zach Thomas, Curtis Jacobs, and Eric Johnson. Really,
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: I don't know where I got Hunter from.
- 1:19:33Speaker 2: Jesus Christ, you're all over there.
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: I think there is another guy named Demontree Hunter who's
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: in the draft recently. Yeah, that's probably what I'm thinking of, But.
- 1:19:40Speaker 2: I I can't stress it enough with Waiver claims. I
- 1:19:43Speaker 2: know everybody's jonesing for the next like Jem to find
- 1:19:48Speaker 2: on Waivers. It hardly ever happens that these guys turn
- 1:19:51Speaker 2: out to be anything. So I've I've learned my lesson
- 1:19:55Speaker 2: in that respect a little bit over the years. You know,
- 1:19:58Speaker 2: I used to you find out about new guys. I'd
- 1:20:01Speaker 2: write big film reviews on them and I dive into
- 1:20:03Speaker 2: their tape for hours and and then they so you
- 1:20:06Speaker 2: did your job and they no, No, This was like, no,
- 1:20:09Speaker 2: that's your job.
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: No, that's your job. No, it's your job.
- 1:20:12Speaker 2: And then in three weeks they'd be off the team. Yeah,
- 1:20:14Speaker 2: And so it's just it is what it is with waivers.
- 1:20:18Speaker 2: But the one that kind of confused me and UH
- 1:20:22Speaker 2: with the waiver claim because like you have four you
- 1:20:24Speaker 2: claim four guys, you have to put them on the roster, right,
- 1:20:26Speaker 2: So they had to create these spots and now and
- 1:20:29Speaker 2: all is well, that ends well in hindsight, like they're
- 1:20:31Speaker 2: probably going to get everybody back on the practice squad
- 1:20:33Speaker 2: that they cut.
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: They just have to wait on Bold. Yeah, three of
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: the guys are back Bold, nice clear waivers, which we'll
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: know in ten minutes.
- 1:20:39Speaker 2: Yeah, so it's probably gonna end up being you know,
- 1:20:43Speaker 2: water under the bridge, Yeah, in ten minutes. But the
- 1:20:47Speaker 2: main thing I look at is I really thought that
- 1:20:51Speaker 2: that Tristan Hill had a nice camp. Yeah, and I
- 1:20:53Speaker 2: thought that he's an NFL caliber depth defensive lineman, Like,
- 1:20:57Speaker 2: is Eric Johnson that much better than Tristan Hill?
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: I mean he's got more experience recently, that would be
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: the one thing. Yeah, it's a young group up front
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: for them, and he's played twenty eight games the last
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: two years. But outside of that, he's also much smaller. Yeah,
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: he's like six four two ninety Yeah.
- 1:21:14Speaker 2: Yeah, he's definitely more of a penetrating Yeah.
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: I wonder if they play a little bit on the
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: edge too, kind of like they used to use not
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: the edge of the end, Yeah, like they used to
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: use Lawrence guy. Yeah, but not a bad player. But
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: I'm with you, like I don't know, Tristan Hill made
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: a lot of progress, and they have both of them,
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: like you said in no harm, no foul, and it's
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: not a bad spots have depth. Guys get hurt and
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: maybe they both end up on the active roster for
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: at some point, but I don't.
- 1:21:37Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: They like needed Eric Johnson like they could have. I
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: don't know if anybody else claimed Derek Johnson. Do you
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: just risk him getting through and signed him on the
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: practice Well that's the thing is like.
- 1:21:49Speaker 2: Now they get both, So that's that's the that's the
- 1:21:52Speaker 2: reason why you do it, because now you have both
- 1:21:55Speaker 2: guys and then just you know, with Jeden Rager, I
- 1:22:01Speaker 2: I keep saying this take because I want to. I
- 1:22:04Speaker 2: know it's gonna come regardless of how many times I
- 1:22:06Speaker 2: say it. But guys like Jayvon Baker and Kishan Booty,
- 1:22:11Speaker 2: it's on my radar that they might be healthy scratches
- 1:22:13Speaker 2: week one against the Bengals. Yeah, and Jalen Rager goes
- 1:22:17Speaker 2: to the practice squad. He's a vested veteran, so he
- 1:22:20Speaker 2: doesn't go through waivers. You tell him, this is just
- 1:22:24Speaker 2: roster mechanics, right, roster minusha, We're gonna send you to
- 1:22:28Speaker 2: the practice squad. We're still gonna pay you your freight
- 1:22:30Speaker 2: because you're gonna be on the game day roster for
- 1:22:32Speaker 2: week one. My guess is is that Jalen Rager gets
- 1:22:35Speaker 2: elevated to the game day roster on Week one. He's
- 1:22:38Speaker 2: active on game day to return kicks and play his
- 1:22:41Speaker 2: role on special teams and then be the backup X
- 1:22:44Speaker 2: receiver to Taekwon Thorn. And a guy like Kaishan Boody
- 1:22:48Speaker 2: or Javon Baker is probably a healthy scratch. Maybe both
- 1:22:50Speaker 2: are healthy.
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: Se My guess would be Rager week one, Week two,
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: and week three, and then they revisit it when they
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: run out of elevations week four.
- 1:22:57Speaker 2: Right, So this is that that angle of the ross
- 1:23:00Speaker 2: is a little belichick in by the way that.
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: They d every team kind of manipulates those those practice
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: squad elevations. Now, I don't think that's just Bill.
- 1:23:08Speaker 2: Yeah, so I I can see that with Jalen Rager.
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: Who's your other elevation?
- 1:23:13Speaker 2: It's a good question, Mitchell. It could be Willcox if
- 1:23:17Speaker 2: Be's healthy. I also think it could be one of
- 1:23:19Speaker 2: the running backs, maybe Kevin Harris. You know, I don't
- 1:23:22Speaker 2: know where they view it right now with Jamichael Hasty
- 1:23:26Speaker 2: in terms of like if they really fail, Like I
- 1:23:28Speaker 2: feel like Jamichael Hasty is a player, Like I think
- 1:23:30Speaker 2: that it's not just like a situation where you know
- 1:23:34Speaker 2: they're gonna play him in the kicking game, Like I
- 1:23:36Speaker 2: actually think he can contribute a little bit.
- 1:23:38Speaker 3: Well.
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: I do wonder if they have him return some kicks
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: and maybe that buys him some time on Rager.
- 1:23:42Speaker 2: Yeah, that that that could be as well. Uh So
- 1:23:46Speaker 2: that that's the roster so far, you know. I think
- 1:23:49Speaker 2: the biggest thing though, when you looked at this fifty
- 1:23:52Speaker 2: three man roster for the Patriots, I liked what they
- 1:23:55Speaker 2: did at receiver in corner because that was the two
- 1:23:59Speaker 2: spots where it felt like they had some surplus of
- 1:24:02Speaker 2: NFL talent. Yeah, and rather than just worry about like
- 1:24:06Speaker 2: positional thresholds and like, yo, you're only supposed to carry
- 1:24:09Speaker 2: five receivers in five corners like traditionally or whatever, they
- 1:24:13Speaker 2: kept the extra bodies at those two spots. They seven
- 1:24:16Speaker 2: and seven at both spots. I was a little bit
- 1:24:18Speaker 2: surprised that they went dial over Wade.
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: I think they wanted the whole rookie class to make
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: the team. I don't think that happened by accident.
- 1:24:26Speaker 2: I wonder too, if it's just a little bit of
- 1:24:28Speaker 2: like upside versus known commodity like Sean Wade is probably
- 1:24:32Speaker 2: is what he is at this point, is going into
- 1:24:34Speaker 2: year four. He's a fine depth corner.
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: I also think, and I mean, he got cut the ice,
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: so we'll see if he comes back. I think Isaiah
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: Bolden kind of pushed Sean Wade off the roster with
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: his ability to play in the slot.
- 1:24:46Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, del pettis good story. Undrafted free agent makes
- 1:24:50Speaker 2: the team. So that was my biggest takeaways from the rosters.
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: Only one more was it how scared should Patrick Mahomes
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: be in Kansas City? I Zappi Fever knows no bounds.
- 1:25:04Speaker 2: I'm a little confused by that decision. I'm not gonna lie.
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: Well, you know who their backup is, No, Carson Wentz.
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: Their quarterback room right now is just Patrick Mahomes, Carson Wentz.
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: Bailey's happy. What a room, A lot of stories in
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: that room.
- 1:25:20Speaker 2: He's very different from those two guys. Like even Carson
- 1:25:22Speaker 2: Wentz has a little bit of that like mobility, athleticism, size,
- 1:25:26Speaker 2: like you know, like that's that's not Bailey, Zappy I
- 1:25:31Speaker 2: Taylor Swift. I was a little surprised about that because
- 1:25:35Speaker 2: I thought he would go someplace where he at least
- 1:25:37Speaker 2: had a semi shot to compete, like he obviously is
- 1:25:39Speaker 2: zero points zero percent chance.
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: Of Zappy Fever knows no bounds.
- 1:25:43Speaker 2: Yeah, I was a little surprised by that.
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: You just know, you just know it's not me rooting
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: for injury, but you just know Mahomes is gonna get
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: hurt at some point. Zapi's gonna like win a big
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: game for the Chiefs and it's gonna be ridiculous. You're
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: not in the media.
- 1:25:57Speaker 2: Like well, because they I mean, they have a much
- 1:25:59Speaker 2: better roster than the Patriots.
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: Oh no, they're not gonna win because of Zappy, but.
- 1:26:03Speaker 2: Yeah, they could go into a game and like Andy
- 1:26:05Speaker 2: Reid could could put together the Patriots one game of Bareley's.
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: Remember when like thirty eight year old Chad Henny won
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: them a playoff game? Do you remember that? Like something
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: like that?
- 1:26:14Speaker 2: Oh, I remember? The last thing I wanted to ask
- 1:26:16Speaker 2: you about. Just we knew this was happening, kind of
- 1:26:18Speaker 2: like Jacoby starting at quarterback, but Joey Sly winning the
- 1:26:21Speaker 2: kicking competition. Just your thoughts.
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: He earned it, Yeah, he deserved it. Yeah, map for him.
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: I do think they'll they they will, and they should
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: bring a kicker on the practice squad just in case. Yeah,
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: I'm kind of surprised it's not Chad Royland. I feel
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: like it was gonna be. We would have heard by
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: now because they rolland closed the gap there late and
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: completely close it. But he narrowed it. But the one
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: thing with Joey Sli is a big leg I think
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: they took those last two kicks on Sunday night to
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: really get a gauge of where he was at. And
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: they know points are going to be at a premium
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: and you know, fourth and ten from the forty, can
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: we kick this thing right? Right? So he gives them
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: a little like obviously I like Nick Folk, but Nick
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: folkshole thing was forty and n he's automatic. Anything beyond that,
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: you're probably planning on going for it anyway. Yeah, you know,
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: if it's if it's close, you're just not gonna ask
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: him to step out that much. Stephen Gostowski was honestly
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: kind of the same thing, especially late in his career.
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: Bill was always I just just make the gimmis. I'm
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: not gonna ask you to make too many of the
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: hard ones, but I need you to make the gimmis.
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: Joey sl is a little more. We have more field
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: goal range than the average team, and you know, are
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: they going to take advantage of that? If you have
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: a kicker like Joey Sly I would hope they look
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: to take advantage of that, not that I want them
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: to be super conservative. And you know, fourth and one
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: from like the thirty five, maybe go for it, right,
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: But for a team where points are at the premium,
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: expanding that field goal range, it's fourth and ten from
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: the thirty five, that maybe now is a little more
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: of a realistic field goal kick than it was before.
- 1:27:59Speaker 2: So I know you hate that concept. No, no, I
- 1:28:02Speaker 2: hear you first thing on Sly. You know you kind
- 1:28:05Speaker 2: of just said it. But I was looked at your numbers.
- 1:28:06Speaker 2: I put your numbers in my I appreciate it. Yeah,
- 1:28:09Speaker 2: my right up.
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: By the way, the numbers are big this Yeah, people
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: love the numbers that might have. I think they were
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: bigger in the hanngtimes.
- 1:28:15Speaker 2: The fifty plus was not close in terms of makes right, So.
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: I don't I don't did that it was three of I.
- 1:28:22Speaker 2: Think it was three for eight for Ryland and like
- 1:28:24Speaker 2: seven for eight for Joey's.
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: Now Rland didn't have as many.
- 1:28:27Speaker 2: I thought that's what it was. Maybe's three for seven.
- 1:28:30Speaker 2: It was not close, that's the point. Yeah, right, it
- 1:28:32Speaker 2: went really forty.
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: So Ryland also struggled in the in the forty range too.
- 1:28:36Speaker 2: Yeah, so that that was the big thing with the
- 1:28:38Speaker 2: kicking cop.
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: Dish three of seven verse eight of nine, and then
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: it was oh, forty to forty nine. It was only
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: one different sixteen to twenty two for Ryland, seventeen to
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: twenty two for Sly.
- 1:28:47Speaker 2: Now let me ask you this because then we have
- 1:28:49Speaker 2: to wrap up the show. How how much we in
- 1:28:53Speaker 2: the preseason we didn't get to see what Gerrodmeo's fourth
- 1:28:56Speaker 2: down decision making is going to look like, Yeah, we're
- 1:28:59Speaker 2: gonna argue on the show about this this year. I
- 1:29:01Speaker 2: can tell because I if he's like Dan Campbell and
- 1:29:03Speaker 2: he's just go for it, go for it, go for it,
- 1:29:06Speaker 2: it's gonna drive you.
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: Up a wall.
- 1:29:07Speaker 2: And I can't wait for it because we don't know,
- 1:29:10Speaker 2: we don't know, we don't know yet.
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: You want to get mad at him for something he
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: hasn't thought.
- 1:29:13Speaker 2: I just want to know if you're like, if he's
- 1:29:15Speaker 2: like an aggressive and he doesn't have to be brit stalely,
- 1:29:18Speaker 2: but like, if he's.
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: Not so much about the decisions as much as it
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: is the philosophy behind the decisions. If he's going for
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: it because his gut tells him to go for it
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: as a former NFL player, great, I love that. If
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: he's going for it because the dato says, then I'm out.
- 1:29:34Speaker 2: I hope he goes for it, like I hope they're
- 1:29:36Speaker 2: like I'll go from because with Bill, they were one
- 1:29:39Speaker 2: of the least aggressive knocking the microphone, they're one of
- 1:29:42Speaker 2: the least aggressive fourth down guys decision makers in the league.
- 1:29:45Speaker 2: I actually I hope that they're the most. I hope
- 1:29:48Speaker 2: they are. Brandon Staley, just to piss you off.
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: I think they're gonna be pretty aggressive because defensive coach
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: is going to trust the defense.
- 1:29:53Speaker 2: Yeah, that's probably for.
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: Like I think they're I think they're gonna be pretty aggressive.
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: I do, But I don't think it's gonna because of
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: the math. I think it's gonna be just the form
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: of player. Coaches are generally more aggressive.
- 1:30:03Speaker 2: All right, there's a lot of emails, and normally for
- 1:30:08Speaker 2: our full two hour show, yeah, I would I have
- 1:30:10Speaker 2: brought up some of the concerns about route spacing that
- 1:30:14Speaker 2: we got in these emails. I just will say this
- 1:30:17Speaker 2: really quickly about it, because we got like three emails
- 1:30:20Speaker 2: about it.
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: They people do they we our audience knows us.
- 1:30:23Speaker 2: It's on my radar. Right, I'm not ready to like
- 1:30:26Speaker 2: panic about it yet. Like this isn't two years ago
- 1:30:28Speaker 2: where it's a regular season games and guys are literally
- 1:30:31Speaker 2: running into each other.
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: Let me ask you this one question about it. Yeah,
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: obviously they're not running the full playbook in the preseason. Yeah,
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: how much of it do you just chalk up to it.
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: It's preseason. They're just running scratch stuff.
- 1:30:41Speaker 2: Not maybe a little bit, but like the biggest issue
- 1:30:44Speaker 2: that I see is that like they're running routes into
- 1:30:47Speaker 2: each other over the ball. Like, I don't know any
- 1:30:49Speaker 2: playbook in the NFL that has mirror dig routes running
- 1:30:54Speaker 2: directly into each other over the ball.
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: There is a play like that in CFB twenty five
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: that actually works sooner for well.
- 1:31:00Speaker 2: I it doesn't exist, it does.
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: Okay, that's one of my like go to that's one
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: of my like go to third and long plays.
- 1:31:08Speaker 2: If they're crossing a crossing pattern, yeah, or it's or
- 1:31:12Speaker 2: it's mesh and it's at the it's at the shallow
- 1:31:15Speaker 2: level right right exactly then okay, But angled dig routes
- 1:31:21Speaker 2: at each other over the middle of the field. Never
- 1:31:24Speaker 2: seen it. That's not an NFL play Like that should
- 1:31:27Speaker 2: not be on the film, So it's on my radar.
- 1:31:29Speaker 3: You know.
- 1:31:29Speaker 2: There was one with with Jalen Polk and Jean Bell.
- 1:31:34Speaker 2: Drake may forced it over the middle of the field
- 1:31:36Speaker 2: like a late throw over the middle of the field.
- 1:31:38Speaker 2: Not one of his better decisions in the game. And
- 1:31:42Speaker 2: Jaean Bell's the first three and the the buzz defender,
- 1:31:46Speaker 2: the robber. He goes with Jaheim Bell, and so what's
- 1:31:49Speaker 2: Drake May does the right thing and he throws the
- 1:31:50Speaker 2: second one in right because he takes the first one
- 1:31:52Speaker 2: in like Jahem Bell's got to get out of dodge,
- 1:31:55Speaker 2: like you got to clear that out. You gotta clear
- 1:31:57Speaker 2: the picture out for the quarterback. So there are some routes,
- 1:32:00Speaker 2: some things that are on my radar. I know that
- 1:32:02Speaker 2: some people will. I guess I haven't gotten a chance
- 1:32:05Speaker 2: to watch Kurt Warners yet. You know JT. O. Sullivan
- 1:32:07Speaker 2: and Kurt Warner day breakdowns. I haven't watched Kurt Warners yet,
- 1:32:10Speaker 2: but I know that was a lot of the conversation
- 1:32:13Speaker 2: on Kurt Warners. It's on my radar. I'm not ready
- 1:32:15Speaker 2: to hit the panic button yet because it's the preseason.
- 1:32:18Speaker 2: If it's happening in September, then it will be something
- 1:32:21Speaker 2: we will talk about. Trust me, if I wanted to
- 1:32:23Speaker 2: address that, because there's a lot of emails about it.
- 1:32:26Speaker 2: And next week we will do the full two hours.
- 1:32:28Speaker 2: I promise. Previo a vet appointment actually for Alice that
- 1:32:33Speaker 2: we got to get to. But before we wrap it up,
