- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Yukon men's basketball coaches Shown one
- 0:03Speaker 1: of the staff, the assistant coach Mike Nardi, joins his
- 0:06Speaker 1: first year with Yukon. Longtime Villanova assistant had a little
- 0:10Speaker 1: interim duty there as a headman for three games as well.
- 0:13Speaker 1: But Mike, let's start with you as a player, because
- 0:16Speaker 1: I first ran into you as a player four year starter,
- 0:20Speaker 1: which is not something that's easy to do at Villanova
- 0:24Speaker 1: back mid two thousand's helped them get to the Sweet
- 0:28Speaker 1: sixteen and five and the Elite eight and six. Your
- 0:31Speaker 1: college career as a player, how do you think that
- 0:35Speaker 1: impacted you as a coach now that you're in the
- 0:38Speaker 1: other end of the thing you got to whistle on
- 0:40Speaker 1: all the time.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Yep, yep. No, it's great to be on the show, Mike,
- 0:44Speaker 2: So thanks for having me. You know, I think for
- 0:47Speaker 2: myself as a player, I always had that underdog mentality,
- 0:52Speaker 2: you know, and kind of work ethic to prove myself
- 0:55Speaker 2: every day that I belonged, you know, and I was
- 0:59Speaker 2: going to compete for everything that I that I earned,
- 1:03Speaker 2: you know, on a daily basis. And I think in
- 1:06Speaker 2: the coaching world, you know, it's pretty similar, right, Like
- 1:10Speaker 2: you have to come in, you know. I thought that
- 1:12Speaker 2: was one of the greatest things that Coach Wright did
- 1:14Speaker 2: for me as a as a coach, was he put
- 1:17Speaker 2: me in a position to learn from the ground up,
- 1:20Speaker 2: you know. And when I became a part of the
- 1:21Speaker 2: staff at Villanova, I started in the you know, player
- 1:25Speaker 2: development role, which at that time you could not be
- 1:29Speaker 2: on the court instructing, so I had a chance to
- 1:32Speaker 2: kind of fine tune and learn new things behind the
- 1:35Speaker 2: scenes and and just what that looks like every day,
- 1:39Speaker 2: right class checks, spending time with the with the players,
- 1:43Speaker 2: you know, getting to build relationships, being in coaching meetings
- 1:48Speaker 2: and and understanding you know, the terminology and our schemes
- 1:52Speaker 2: and and what we were trying to do daily in practice.
- 1:55Speaker 2: And it just gave me a perspective on coaching, you know,
- 1:58Speaker 2: to to see that and then be able to get
- 2:01Speaker 2: promoted each year at Villanova because I was putting in
- 2:05Speaker 2: the work, you know. And Jay wasn't the type of
- 2:08Speaker 2: guy just to promote you just because right you know,
- 2:11Speaker 2: I played for him. He wanted you to go out
- 2:14Speaker 2: and earn it, and I felt like I did that,
- 2:17Speaker 2: you know, being on some great staff there and learning
- 2:19Speaker 2: from guys that were in front of me. So I
- 2:23Speaker 2: just think, you know, as a whole for myself being
- 2:26Speaker 2: able to just work hard every day, you know, be
- 2:30Speaker 2: a part of something that's bigger than myself and really
- 2:34Speaker 2: just try and strive to be great, you know, and
- 2:35Speaker 2: make other people better.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Mike Nardi with us you kind assistant first year at stores,
- 2:42Speaker 1: part of two national championships Villanova as a coach sixteen
- 2:46Speaker 1: and eighteen. Now you're in a championship place again. Let's
- 2:50Speaker 1: talk about that because you know, Yukon just played new
- 2:54Speaker 1: Haven and their opener the other day one by twenty four.
- 2:56Speaker 1: But Dan spent the last fifteen minutes talking about the
- 2:59Speaker 1: things that didn't go right. So I guess what I'm
- 3:03Speaker 1: asking is the championship mentality. When you have that, you're
- 3:08Speaker 1: not really ever satisfied, but you have to you have
- 3:11Speaker 1: to enjoy what you're doing at the same time. Correct.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Yeah, But you know, I think having a championship mentality
- 3:19Speaker 2: through the journey of a season is you're grinding every
- 3:23Speaker 2: day until hopefully you get a chance to then at
- 3:28Speaker 2: the end celebrate, you know, and be the best team
- 3:32Speaker 2: in the country. Right, So you're going through that journey
- 3:35Speaker 2: and you're and you're grinding and your expectations are extremely
- 3:39Speaker 2: high because you know where you need to be.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Right.
- 3:43Speaker 2: They they've won back to back championships here under coach,
- 3:46Speaker 2: and he knows what those teams did every single day
- 3:50Speaker 2: in practice. He knows the focus, the concentration level, the
- 3:54Speaker 2: attention to detail, right, the competitive nature of each individual guy,
- 3:59Speaker 2: and then that as a collective group. So I think
- 4:02Speaker 2: early in the season, even though you do have a
- 4:04Speaker 2: bunch of guys that have returned and have had great
- 4:07Speaker 2: success here, right, you still want to treat this like
- 4:12Speaker 2: a new group because there are new players, right that
- 4:15Speaker 2: came in from the transfer portal. There are freshmen, you know,
- 4:20Speaker 2: players that haven't done it at this level yet. So
- 4:23Speaker 2: you're trying to get those guys a custom and really
- 4:26Speaker 2: just get them to understand what it takes to become
- 4:29Speaker 2: a championship team.
- 4:31Speaker 1: Well, Mike Nardi's with us will continue in just a moment.
- 4:34Speaker 1: This is the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show on lear Field,
