- 0:03Speaker 1: It is the final and most wonderful FT Live of
- 0:09Speaker 1: the year. We do this show live every day Monday
- 0:12Speaker 1: through Friday, all year long for three years now officially
- 0:16Speaker 1: three years on March first of twenty twenty six, but
- 0:20Speaker 1: this will cap our third season of FT. Scottie Brown,
- 0:24Speaker 1: Aer Kratz, Kevin Polar. If you're listening on the podcast
- 0:26Speaker 1: and you never watch us on YouTube, you should come,
- 0:28Speaker 1: especially for today, to see Eric Kratz doing his Sanna's
- 0:33Speaker 1: best and KP. I don't want to underwrite what you've
- 0:37Speaker 1: got on your head too.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Thank you, Thank you. Putting on Santa's tab hat. It's
- 0:42Speaker 2: a great hat my wife found. I think it's very
- 0:44Speaker 2: fitting for today.
- 0:46Speaker 3: I feel like that's at least one free drink if
- 0:49Speaker 3: you go to the bar around Christmas time.
- 0:53Speaker 2: The bar man I got young kids. I don't even
- 0:56Speaker 2: know what outside My little compound looks like groceries get delivered,
- 1:02Speaker 2: Groceries get delivered, We eat at home.
- 1:06Speaker 4: I'm like, I'm on the house arrest.
- 1:08Speaker 1: You're what do you call crats, like treading water or
- 1:10Speaker 1: something like that.
- 1:12Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, they're they're they're just they're they're treading water.
- 1:16Speaker 3: Because right now you're just like you know, when the
- 1:18Speaker 3: new baby came, you were like under PARNI, okay, maybe
- 1:26Speaker 3: you've got this great oh no blowout. We're fine, we're fine.
- 1:29Speaker 3: Hold your breath.
- 1:32Speaker 2: And our baby has like the the most insane ability
- 1:36Speaker 2: to just sleep thirty minutes every nap, exactly thirty minutes.
- 1:39Speaker 2: So it's like we start the timer. That's the only
- 1:42Speaker 2: time we're not really underwater. It's like we get stuff
- 1:44Speaker 2: done and then sure enough baby wakes up thirty minutes later.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Yep, that's the game. Well, this is your little break, Okay.
- 1:51Speaker 1: I do meetings all day, You've got kids in arms
- 1:55Speaker 1: and running around all day, and then you get a
- 1:57Speaker 1: little two hour break to talk ball. So appreciate everyone.
- 2:00Speaker 1: It's been watching all year, and we still will have
- 2:03Speaker 1: plenty of content from Christmas through New Year's. We've recorded
- 2:07Speaker 1: a bunch of funnel things that you'll hear on podcast
- 2:10Speaker 1: platforms and on YouTube. Now let's get to breaking news.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Here come the buckos. Two years, twenty nine million dollars
- 2:23Speaker 1: for Ryan O'Hearn. The Pittsburgh Pirates keep working on what
- 2:27Speaker 1: was a brutal offense in twenty twenty five, and they're
- 2:30Speaker 1: doing it. They're making moves right now. This contract also
- 2:32Speaker 1: includes five hundred thousand dollars in performance bonuses in each
- 2:36Speaker 1: season for O'Hearn. Good job by FT insider Robert Murray
- 2:41Speaker 1: on that case. Okay, KP Brandon Lao was just acquired
- 2:46Speaker 1: by this team, and on our show yesterday they potentially
- 2:49Speaker 1: had a thirty home run pop and a veteran. They
- 2:52Speaker 1: have the top prospect in the sport in Connor Griffin.
- 2:54Speaker 1: According to Baseball America, he should be ready at some
- 2:56Speaker 1: point this season. Now. They added Ryan O'Hearn, who's consistently
- 3:00Speaker 1: been a very very solid bat, above average bat in
- 3:03Speaker 1: baseball over the last few years, and the glove was
- 3:05Speaker 1: better than ever this past season, so you can get
- 3:07Speaker 1: some first space time out of him. What do we
- 3:09Speaker 1: think about the Pirates heading into twenty twenty six? Are
- 3:12Speaker 1: they at a potential playoff contender level yet?
- 3:17Speaker 2: Before I answered that question, all I could think about
- 3:20Speaker 2: when that news came out and I saw on our
- 3:22Speaker 2: message breaking news. I didn't want to peak see what
- 3:25Speaker 2: it was. I wanted to be surprised. But the streak
- 3:28Speaker 2: is over the first multi year deal since Ivon Nova
- 3:32Speaker 2: and what year was.
- 3:32Speaker 4: At twenty seventeen? Sixteen for Pirates twenty sixteen. The Pirates
- 3:37Speaker 4: have done it.
- 3:38Speaker 2: So I want to give them a round of applause
- 3:40Speaker 2: for signing someone up for more than one year. Would
- 3:43Speaker 2: have never thought it was going to be Ryan O'Hearn,
- 3:46Speaker 2: but good for them. You know, we talk about another
- 3:48Speaker 2: guy who you know, came up, struggled a little bit,
- 3:52Speaker 2: you know, kind of bounced around, found a home in Baltimore,
- 3:56Speaker 2: kind of really turned his career around.
- 3:58Speaker 1: You know.
- 3:59Speaker 2: Ultimately they got traded at the deadline. But I love
- 4:03Speaker 2: seeing stories like this. I love seeing guys that kind
- 4:06Speaker 2: of on topic with what we were just talking about,
- 4:08Speaker 2: that can improve, that can make themselves.
- 4:10Speaker 4: Better baseball players.
- 4:12Speaker 2: But to answer your question, I think the Pirates are
- 4:15Speaker 2: doing something. I think they're doing something. I think their
- 4:17Speaker 2: offense is much improved with some of the additions that
- 4:20Speaker 2: they have done. I think they'll be able to go
- 4:22Speaker 2: out and play good defense. I think they got a
- 4:24Speaker 2: great leader, and obviously their pitching staff is legit. I
- 4:28Speaker 2: think they need a little bit more help at the
- 4:30Speaker 2: back of their bullpen, and I think they can make
- 4:32Speaker 2: some noise in that division.
- 4:35Speaker 1: I love it. I love it.
- 4:37Speaker 3: First thing that called me up, Pirates so I always
- 4:40Speaker 3: have a place and they always have a place in
- 4:42Speaker 3: my heart. They've gone through a lot of things. Scott,
- 4:45Speaker 3: you asked, is this enough yet? I don't know. I
- 4:49Speaker 3: think they had the after the the second half last year.
- 4:54Speaker 3: I think they had the sixth best defense. Everybody knows
- 4:57Speaker 3: what they're bringing with the starting rotation. You want a
- 5:00Speaker 3: healthy year out of Jared Jones, you want a full
- 5:03Speaker 3: year out of some of their prospects. You got Harrington,
- 5:07Speaker 3: you have guys coming up, obviously, have Paul Skins. And
- 5:11Speaker 3: to me is the question is if you think they're
- 5:15Speaker 3: a playoff team in the NL Central, if they have
- 5:18Speaker 3: enough to make the playoffs because of the Ryan o'hearns signing,
- 5:23Speaker 3: all you have to do is look in the AL
- 5:25Speaker 3: Central and say, are the Pirates better than what the
- 5:29Speaker 3: Tigers were two years ago? And if you believe that,
- 5:33Speaker 3: because you have the other best pitcher in the game,
- 5:37Speaker 3: the Tigers had Terror scruball the Pirates have Paul Skins.
- 5:41Speaker 3: If you believe that this lineup is better than the
- 5:43Speaker 3: Tigers lineup, then you have to believe, even though the
- 5:46Speaker 3: National League is tougher, they still play in NL Central,
- 5:49Speaker 3: that the Pirates have a chance to make the playoffs.
- 5:52Speaker 3: And I think Ryan O'Hearn's signing is amazing. I think
- 5:54Speaker 3: he is a prime example of what we talked about.
- 5:57Speaker 3: These are the Royals. He didn't play much. He was
- 6:00Speaker 3: shuttled up and down from Triple A. When he was
- 6:02Speaker 3: up in the big leagues, he'd get a little bit
- 6:04Speaker 3: of a stint and then you know it didn't work out. Okay, Okay,
- 6:07Speaker 3: we're gonna face We're gonna you're gonna face righties. Salve's
- 6:11Speaker 3: gonna still catch. And then days when it's lefties, you know,
- 6:15Speaker 3: we're gonna have someone else play first base. Salvi's gonna
- 6:18Speaker 3: play first so we can have more of a right
- 6:20Speaker 3: handed lineup. He went to Baltimore, he kind of emerged.
- 6:24Speaker 3: He got about three hundred and fifty at bats, and
- 6:26Speaker 3: then he got four hundred some at bats, and then
- 6:28Speaker 3: last year he gets five hundred. And he's always had
- 6:30Speaker 3: above an eight an eight hundred slugging percentage and a
- 6:34Speaker 3: plus ops. So, to me, is the good signing for
- 6:38Speaker 3: a guy that needs to and will play every day
- 6:41Speaker 3: for the Pirates.
- 6:45Speaker 1: This is gonna sound ridiculous, but it's not. You know
- 6:49Speaker 1: how you sometimes say players like diet whatever or so
- 6:52Speaker 1: and so light. It's almost like take big poppy as
- 6:55Speaker 1: coke and then it's like coke zero is Ryan O'Hearn
- 7:00Speaker 1: copy didn't get much beat with Minnesota in the Midwest
- 7:04Speaker 1: moves over to the Red Sox obviously was more of
- 7:06Speaker 1: like a you know, one sixty ish showps plus guy
- 7:10Speaker 1: on average, and O'Hearn's more of like a one thirty ish.
- 7:12Speaker 1: But my point is Ryan O'Hearn has been a consistently
- 7:17Speaker 1: awesome bat, like all star level with his bat here.
- 7:20Speaker 1: I was looking at the roster real quick for the
- 7:22Speaker 1: Pirates because when we entered the off season, I was like,
- 7:25Speaker 1: they have to replace I would say five or six spots.
- 7:28Speaker 1: And if you want to give one spot to the
- 7:29Speaker 1: top prospect in the sport, that's fine. But still Ryan
- 7:32Speaker 1: O'Hearn immediately enters the lineup as their best hitter. He's
- 7:36Speaker 1: the best hitter in the lineup, right, Isn't he gonna
- 7:39Speaker 1: hit three or four for them?
- 7:41Speaker 3: Do you know who they had who they had hitting forth?
- 7:44Speaker 3: And I say this all the time. I went to
- 7:45Speaker 3: a game in April, you know who their fourth hitter
- 7:47Speaker 3: was behind Brian Reynolds. Because people are gonna be like, oh,
- 7:50Speaker 3: Brian Reynolds, he had a terrible year. You know who
- 7:53Speaker 3: was hitting behind him? He Manuel Valdez was hitting fourth. Sorry,
- 7:58Speaker 3: it's a big league player. It's not a four hitter.
- 8:02Speaker 3: I batted behind Edwin er Canassio, and I hit fourth
- 8:05Speaker 3: one time in my career hitting behind Eddie. I should
- 8:09Speaker 3: never hit behind Edwin and conossion. Emmanuel Valdez should never
- 8:13Speaker 3: be a big league team's fourth hitter. And now they
- 8:16Speaker 3: have a legitimate person that to me, this is a
- 8:19Speaker 3: signing that raises that raises all ships. This is a
- 8:23Speaker 3: signing that helps maybe O'Neil Cruz take that next step.
- 8:27Speaker 3: I mean, I think he's a big time underachiever. I
- 8:30Speaker 3: think he needs to take that next step where his
- 8:34Speaker 3: talent and his as Andrew McCutchen called him, the avatar,
- 8:39Speaker 3: takes that next step. Well, how's he supposed to take
- 8:41Speaker 3: the next step if everybody's if everybody's attacking him like
- 8:45Speaker 3: he's the superstar in the lineup, How's Brian Reynolds supposed
- 8:48Speaker 3: to use his elite power from both sides of the plate,
- 8:52Speaker 3: if everybody's attacking him like he's the best hitter in
- 8:55Speaker 3: the lineup. This takes a little bit of pressure off
- 8:58Speaker 3: those guys and maybe helps them take that next step.
- 9:03Speaker 2: I think it makes it more attractive for other players
- 9:05Speaker 2: to want to go there now too. You're talking about
- 9:07Speaker 2: kind of raising the bottom up. You know, we talked
- 9:10Speaker 2: about this before Thanksgiving, and I know it's McCutcheon's job
- 9:13Speaker 2: until he doesn't want anymore. But I think a guy
- 9:16Speaker 2: like Marcelo Zuno would fit so good in this lineup.
- 9:19Speaker 2: Brandon laut also just recently traded over there too. Brian Reynolds,
- 9:24Speaker 2: I know, is a switch hitter, O'Neil Cruz, switch hitter
- 9:26Speaker 2: Ryan o'haran left handed. Feels like they need a right
- 9:29Speaker 2: handed back kind of in the middle of that. And
- 9:31Speaker 2: I think Marcelo Zuno talk about, you know, making players
- 9:35Speaker 2: better around him, like an O'Neal Cruz and as you know, Cratzy.
- 9:40Speaker 2: It's a real thing Latino to Latino, like they just
- 9:43Speaker 2: there's a comfort level there, there's a communication that it's
- 9:46Speaker 2: just hard. You know, they've come from the same place
- 9:49Speaker 2: as they've been through the same things. Marcelo Zuna is
- 9:52Speaker 2: a legendary figure when it comes to Dominican players, Like
- 9:56Speaker 2: it's such a voice that O'Neil Cruz can listen to.
- 9:59Speaker 2: And I think, you know, going out and making a
- 10:02Speaker 2: signing like this is making it more attractive for players
- 10:05Speaker 2: who maybe only need only commanding a one year deal,
- 10:08Speaker 2: maybe coming off a bounce back year to kind of
- 10:11Speaker 2: see the future could kind of be here now they
- 10:14Speaker 2: have an opportunity to win. You think about the division
- 10:17Speaker 2: they play, and obviously the Milwaukee Brewers are still there,
- 10:19Speaker 2: the Chicago Cubs are there, but after that it's kind
- 10:21Speaker 2: of you know, anyone's division. And you know, when you
- 10:26Speaker 2: look at lineup the way the lineups are constructed, name
- 10:29Speaker 2: for name, you know, I know the Milwaukee Brewers went
- 10:32Speaker 2: out and won, you know, ninety some games, best record
- 10:35Speaker 2: in the National League. But I don't think the names
- 10:38Speaker 2: on the paper throughout the performance, the names on the
- 10:41Speaker 2: paper are not that much different when you compare these
- 10:44Speaker 2: two teams.
- 10:45Speaker 1: Wow, Wow, Hey Cubs fans too, look out here, come
- 10:49Speaker 1: to Pittsburgh Pirates. Yeah. You look on paper at your
- 10:53Speaker 1: a zoom idea and you're like, oh, is there room
- 10:54Speaker 1: for all of them? But it is true. You're getting
- 10:57Speaker 1: ready bat. I mean, first base DH right now is
- 11:00Speaker 1: probably a Spencer Horowitz, Ryan o'hearnshuffle. They're both lefties. I
- 11:05Speaker 1: know they like both of those guys. They're both lefties.
- 11:07Speaker 1: So yead Azuna, you give yourself a little more depth
- 11:09Speaker 1: and flexibility with the lineup. They acquired the password, remember
- 11:12Speaker 1: from the Red Sox. That's another righty bat to be
- 11:15Speaker 1: able to at least handle lefties, if not more. Heading
- 11:18Speaker 1: into this season, Law is positioned at second base every day.
- 11:23Speaker 1: I know Reynolds is coming off a down year, but
- 11:24Speaker 1: he's still a productive player. He should play every day shortstops,
- 11:30Speaker 1: where hopefully Connor Griffin emerges. Nick Gonzales can probably hold
- 11:34Speaker 1: it down for now, O'Neil Cruz in center field. They
- 11:39Speaker 1: have some work to do over at third base. Two.
- 11:41Speaker 1: Who's playing third right now? It's Gared Triolo, maybe Gino Suarez?
- 11:46Speaker 1: What about Geno Suarez.
- 11:48Speaker 3: One year deal when everyone else is and everyone else
- 11:51Speaker 3: has gone home and taking their ball and gone home. Honestly,
- 11:56Speaker 3: that would be I really think the Pirates have done here.
- 12:00Speaker 3: I really think they have done it, and I don't
- 12:02Speaker 3: know that they need it. Are you hitting Asuarez? But
- 12:06Speaker 3: it definitely doesn't hurt. He knows the division, he knows
- 12:10Speaker 3: they know him. In the division because he's killed him
- 12:12Speaker 3: for years with the Reds. Like to me, I think
- 12:16Speaker 3: that that would be an amazing signing, but got to
- 12:20Speaker 3: give We got to give credit where credit's due and
- 12:23Speaker 3: the pirates with this. To me, you don't make this
- 12:27Speaker 3: deal without saying Connor Griffins are Connor Griffins are starting
- 12:31Speaker 3: shortstop in the big leagues next year. Nothing against Nick Gonzalez,
- 12:34Speaker 3: but what Conor Griffin's done. You can bring him into
- 12:36Speaker 3: a situation where now you have veteran Brian Reynolds, you
- 12:41Speaker 3: have veteran Brandon Lao, you have veteran Ryan O'Hearn. All
- 12:45Speaker 3: guys that I know are stand up dudes. Joey bart
- 12:52Speaker 3: is going to be your catcher. He's been a prospect
- 12:54Speaker 3: to bust. So maybe they can, you know, have conversations
- 12:57Speaker 3: about how, hey, you know what as a rookie, it
- 13:01Speaker 3: didn't work out for me with the Giants. I can
- 13:03Speaker 3: kind of help you through this. To me, they're giving
- 13:06Speaker 3: him a soft landing spot for a guy who will
- 13:09Speaker 3: probably never have a soft landing spot because you're the
- 13:11Speaker 3: number one prospects in baseball and his mental makeups there.
- 13:16Speaker 3: To me, I think we called d k up Don
- 13:19Speaker 3: Kelly and say push for this man, kind of similar
- 13:23Speaker 3: to how the Padres in twenty nineteen with the Eric
- 13:27Speaker 3: Hosmer Manny Machado, those guys pushed for Fernando Tatist to
- 13:31Speaker 3: make the team out of spring training. I think that
- 13:35Speaker 3: is a huge, huge piece. And the Pirates have done
- 13:38Speaker 3: an amazing job without giving out you know, the one
- 13:42Speaker 3: hundred and fifty million to a Kyle Schwarber in these cases.
- 13:46Speaker 1: Right, they did make an attempt there, but now they're
- 13:49Speaker 1: able to spread that money out amongst what could be
- 13:53Speaker 1: maybe a couple other players that entered the mix here
- 13:56Speaker 1: for the Pirates.
- 13:59Speaker 2: Luis Rinfo, who when I was with him in twenty year,
- 14:02Speaker 2: had a really good year. He had a bit of
- 14:05Speaker 2: a down year last year. To play third base. Wichitter,
- 14:09Speaker 2: you know, proven hitter could hit kind of towards the
- 14:12Speaker 2: top of lineup, bottom lineup, ability to steal bases, like
- 14:16Speaker 2: you know, you're talking about one year deals kind of
- 14:18Speaker 2: you know, give him eight ten million bucks to kind
- 14:21Speaker 2: of just go out there play third base every day
- 14:23Speaker 2: kind of, you know, allow him to re up his value.
- 14:27Speaker 2: Meaning between two thoy twenty two and twenty four two
- 14:32Speaker 2: seventy three, you know, one to eleven WRC plus only
- 14:36Speaker 2: struck out sixteen percent of the times. Like, you know,
- 14:39Speaker 2: I don't think they're in I don't think they were
- 14:40Speaker 2: in position to go out and sign a you know,
- 14:43Speaker 2: surez because I don't think Swors has taken a one
- 14:45Speaker 2: year deal. I think, I mean, what he hit over
- 14:47Speaker 2: fifty homers last year, he's not taking a one.
- 14:49Speaker 1: Year Yeah, but he wasn't KP. He's not as valued
- 14:52Speaker 1: amongst the front offices, and I think the trade deadline
- 14:56Speaker 1: showed that, you know, a lot of front offices almost
- 14:58Speaker 1: looked at that as I don't want, say a fluke,
- 15:00Speaker 1: but something that's not going to be repeated.
- 15:02Speaker 2: I would imagine if one year deals were out there,
- 15:06Speaker 2: if one year deals were out there for him, I
- 15:08Speaker 2: would see Seattle as more of a fit for him.
- 15:11Speaker 2: You know, he's obviously sure beloved there, went back there.
- 15:13Speaker 2: If all things are equal, I mean, Seattle's in a
- 15:16Speaker 2: much different position than the Pittsburgh Pirates are in terms
- 15:20Speaker 2: of winning right now. But you know, I think to
- 15:24Speaker 2: Crass's point, if you just have slight upgrades at all
- 15:27Speaker 2: these positions, it kind of raises the floor for this team.
- 15:31Speaker 1: I'm with you, I mean they have to overpay, at
- 15:34Speaker 1: least to an extent. My guess is that O'Hearn's best
- 15:36Speaker 1: offer was say two twenty four, twenty five, and then
- 15:39Speaker 1: you make a call and go, hey, he's yours if
- 15:42Speaker 1: you make it twenty nine something like that. Do you
- 15:46Speaker 1: guys agree, I think based on the past for the pirates, I'm.
- 15:52Speaker 2: Trying to think how people out I'm trying to think
- 15:55Speaker 2: how people would view them right now. You know, obviously
- 15:59Speaker 2: you would make that case with a place like Sacramento.
- 16:02Speaker 2: But I don't know if Pittsburgh is that undesirable as
- 16:05Speaker 2: a place to live. Cratsy, I mean, he's.
- 16:10Speaker 1: Place to live. It's just the organization and how it's
- 16:14Speaker 1: been run for six years or so, and there is
- 16:16Speaker 1: still a chance that it doesn't go well and then
- 16:18Speaker 1: you end up getting moved again. They haven't played in
- 16:22Speaker 1: these waters in a long time. Maybe O'Hearn is not
- 16:24Speaker 1: the best example because he's probably looking for the best deal. Kratz,
- 16:28Speaker 1: this is his one time to strike.
- 16:31Speaker 3: Yes, And I would say maybe, and we'll ask O'Hearn.
- 16:34Speaker 3: Remember put it down in your notes. Scotty always has
- 16:37Speaker 3: a big awesome note section.
- 16:39Speaker 1: Yep.
- 16:39Speaker 3: But when Scott o'heart, Scott O'Hearn. When Ryan O'Hearn comes on,
- 16:46Speaker 3: we got to make sure we ask him did the
- 16:48Speaker 3: Brandon Allow signing or trade change his mind? Did it
- 16:53Speaker 3: push it across the line for him? I would think
- 16:57Speaker 3: maybe it wasn't necessarily an extra five million dollars, Maybe
- 17:01Speaker 3: it was. Maybe there was just you know that extra cash.
- 17:03Speaker 3: Five million dollars is a lot of money, no matter
- 17:06Speaker 3: how much you're making. But you know, without Brandon Low,
- 17:11Speaker 3: are you like, man like, that's just a lot of
- 17:14Speaker 3: weight to carry for this lineup? Brandon Low is now
- 17:18Speaker 3: on the team, does that push it across or you're
- 17:22Speaker 3: or you're having those conversations and say, hey, wait, wait
- 17:25Speaker 3: and see, wait and see what we're gonna do as
- 17:27Speaker 3: an organization, wait and see the moves we're gonna make.
- 17:31Speaker 3: We're we're gonna call Connor Griffin up this year. We
- 17:33Speaker 3: really feel like he is ready to go based on
- 17:35Speaker 3: what he shows us in spring training. And you're like,
- 17:38Speaker 3: as a free agent, You're like, I don't know, you know,
- 17:40Speaker 3: I've heard this about the pirates, heard that about the pirates.
- 17:43Speaker 3: And then the Brandon Law trade goes through. Oh well,
- 17:47Speaker 3: that's kind of a that's kind of a nice deal.
- 17:49Speaker 3: I kind of do want to play with Paul Skeens.
- 17:51Speaker 3: I kind of do want to see what Brian Reynolds
- 17:54Speaker 3: has out there. Connor Griffin seems like the real deal.
- 17:57Speaker 3: I loved watching Jake Mangnum play like who knows what
- 18:02Speaker 3: goes into it, but maybe that Brandon low or trade
- 18:06Speaker 3: not contract trade pushed it over for him, like, Hey,
- 18:10Speaker 3: they are really making moves and they might have some
- 18:12Speaker 3: more moves that they promised Ryan O'Hearn that they're going
- 18:15Speaker 3: to make.
- 18:16Speaker 1: Who knows, Yeah, I don't know if they're going to
- 18:20Speaker 1: be Well, they're now not going to be in play
- 18:22Speaker 1: for Okamoto. He's going to be at first. So they
- 18:26Speaker 1: were linked to him, and maybe those conversations were happening
- 18:29Speaker 1: and they went though hearn direction O'Hearn Horwitz. I don't
- 18:31Speaker 1: think they're going to add another guy who's primarily a
- 18:34Speaker 1: first baseman but third base.
- 18:36Speaker 3: And out did Nakamo go play third?
- 18:38Speaker 1: I think he plays third and first, but you feel
- 18:41Speaker 1: better about him.
- 18:42Speaker 3: Murakama was more of the first d H and the
- 18:45Speaker 3: defense and strikeouts for the issue. Akamoto I thought was
- 18:49Speaker 3: a third baseman and I thought a very serviceable third baseman.
- 18:53Speaker 3: And think about the production that they got at third
- 18:55Speaker 3: base for the last three years in Kibrian Hayes. Now
- 19:00Speaker 3: they're going to have a tough time that that pitching
- 19:02Speaker 3: staff which was which was really good. It's gonna have
- 19:05Speaker 3: tough time, you know, having a third basement there that's
- 19:08Speaker 3: not kim Brian Hayes, who's a goal glove third basement.
- 19:11Speaker 3: So that will be a change. But if Alkamoto to me,
- 19:15Speaker 3: I think Pittsburgh is a great landing spot.
- 19:19Speaker 1: Yep, first time, I.
- 19:22Speaker 4: Forget there's only so many first base jobs available to.
- 19:26Speaker 2: You know, we who knows what he who knows what
- 19:29Speaker 2: he had out there. This could have been the best
- 19:31Speaker 2: opportunity for him, you know, could have guaranteed him the
- 19:34Speaker 2: most playing time. But I don't think it's an unattractive place.
- 19:38Speaker 2: I mean, I've only ever been there as a visiting player.
- 19:41Speaker 2: Beautiful stadium. I know you kind of hear kind of
- 19:44Speaker 2: in the industry, you know, how the pirates have done
- 19:47Speaker 2: things in the past, or the way that they do things,
- 19:50Speaker 2: or their lack of being able to go out and
- 19:52Speaker 2: spend money. But sometimes when you get a generational talent
- 19:57Speaker 2: and you win the lottery and you get the first
- 19:58Speaker 2: overall pick, and you get like Paul's schemes, and he
- 20:02Speaker 2: goes out what he's done in his first two years.
- 20:04Speaker 2: Maybe it changes the way the organization is planning on
- 20:08Speaker 2: acting moving forward, and maybe it changes the way that you,
- 20:11Speaker 2: as a player feel about the organization. If I'm playing
- 20:14Speaker 2: right now, I want a front row seat to watch
- 20:17Speaker 2: Paul Skins play for at least the next four years
- 20:19Speaker 2: that he's signed up to be a Pittsburgh Pirate.
- 20:23Speaker 1: I agree, yeah, and the Central got tougher. The team
- 20:27Speaker 1: that I think has to be looking around and making
- 20:29Speaker 1: sure that they do something is the Cups. I mean,
- 20:31Speaker 1: they're going to lose Kyle Tucker and the Pirates are
- 20:34Speaker 1: getting better. The Brewers aren't going anywhere. You know, there's
- 20:38Speaker 1: a few wins. Sometimes the Cubs just pummel the Pirates.
- 20:40Speaker 1: They're not going to be as easy to pummel this year.
- 20:43Speaker 1: So something that the Cubs should keep in mind. You know,
- 20:46Speaker 1: if the Brewers win the division, there might not be
- 20:48Speaker 1: a wildcard team, or it could be a team like Pittsburgh.
- 20:50Speaker 1: Given the Cubs a run for one of those.
- 20:52Speaker 2: Spots, I mean, I think that's a I think that's
- 20:55Speaker 2: a fair point. When you have a lot of these
- 20:57Speaker 2: or at least a bottom feeder in your division. It
- 21:00Speaker 2: you know, the teams like the Cubs can go out
- 21:02Speaker 2: and feel like, you know, we play them X amount
- 21:04Speaker 2: of times a year, we're gonna just beat them, you know, majority.
- 21:07Speaker 4: Of the time.
- 21:08Speaker 2: Kind of sets your bar at that, you know, eighty
- 21:11Speaker 2: six to ninety wins. You know, as these teams get better,
- 21:14Speaker 2: you know, maybe there isn't a wildcard team that comes
- 21:18Speaker 2: out of the centro anymore. Maybe there's only one winner
- 21:20Speaker 2: because the the gap is shrinking a little bit, it
- 21:23Speaker 2: becomes a little bit more competitive.
- 21:26Speaker 1: Yeah, and you know, the Reds haven't done much, but
- 21:29Speaker 1: they're pitching good, so they're not going to be a
- 21:31Speaker 1: pushover next year. Really, the Cardinals could be the pushover
- 21:33Speaker 1: of all teams that would be the bottom feeder coming
- 21:36Speaker 1: into next season. Jeff McNeil traded to the Sacramento Athletics.
- 21:47Speaker 1: First off, KP, You played with McNeil.
- 21:52Speaker 4: Right, yeah, I did.
- 21:54Speaker 1: We played together in New York, Okay, and you played
- 21:57Speaker 1: with I guess most of the long tenured Mets who
- 22:01Speaker 1: are now gone. So this continues to unravel. We are
- 22:04Speaker 1: going to give good love to the A side and
- 22:07Speaker 1: what their lineup looks like, which I think is pretty good.
- 22:09Speaker 1: But let's start with the Mets dismantling their core. What
- 22:14Speaker 1: do you think about it? What does it tell you?
- 22:18Speaker 2: I think it has a lot more to do with
- 22:22Speaker 2: who's running the team and David Stearns. Obviously Steve Cohen
- 22:26Speaker 2: at the top, but he brings in someone like David Stearns,
- 22:28Speaker 2: and you know, sometimes people that are as successful as
- 22:32Speaker 2: he is and has done what he's been able to do.
- 22:36Speaker 2: When they inherit a team with a lot of really
- 22:38Speaker 2: good players on it and it doesn't work, or if
- 22:40Speaker 2: it does work, sometimes they like to kind of strip
- 22:42Speaker 2: it down and kind of bring in their own guys
- 22:44Speaker 2: and leave their own fingerprint. I think this is a
- 22:46Speaker 2: lot more to do with David Stearns and wanting to
- 22:49Speaker 2: leave his fingerprint on the Mets organization more than maybe
- 22:53Speaker 2: some of these rumors that you see about a lot
- 22:55Speaker 2: of these pieces not really fitting together. Because when I
- 22:58Speaker 2: was there, yes, every team going to have some you
- 23:01Speaker 2: know argument and behind closed doors, you know, fights or
- 23:05Speaker 2: disagreements and stuff. But you know a lot of these
- 23:08Speaker 2: players that are no longer there were really good players,
- 23:11Speaker 2: and they all kind of fit in. You know, it
- 23:14Speaker 2: was a bunch of different unique personalities. But when it
- 23:17Speaker 2: came to playing ball, these guys love playing ball and
- 23:19Speaker 2: love winning. And I know ultimately they haven't won, But
- 23:22Speaker 2: I think this has to do more with trying to
- 23:25Speaker 2: leave his fingerprint on bringing in his guys.
- 23:29Speaker 3: But they won recently. Like I get it, they didn't
- 23:32Speaker 3: win this year. And I don't think anything was so
- 23:35Speaker 3: bad and so agregious that this past year was like
- 23:40Speaker 3: we got to get rid of four of our most
- 23:42Speaker 3: productive players, let alone fan favorites, like for McNeil, he
- 23:48Speaker 3: had a one to eleven ops plus, like he was
- 23:51Speaker 3: above league average. Yes, his defense was what it was.
- 23:56Speaker 3: There was some tists. You would see some of his
- 23:59Speaker 3: you know, emotion. You gotta have guys that have emotions.
- 24:03Speaker 3: So the fact that David Stearns came in here and
- 24:07Speaker 3: has now dismantled a very huge core of this team,
- 24:12Speaker 3: he still hasn't dismantled two of the biggest core pieces
- 24:16Speaker 3: in Juan Soto and Francisco Lindor. The biggest question will
- 24:21Speaker 3: be for him and I don't because I know Stearns,
- 24:24Speaker 3: I don't feel like he's coming in going. My fingerprint
- 24:28Speaker 3: needs to be on this. I don't a lot of
- 24:30Speaker 3: gms have that, and player president of baseball operations have that,
- 24:34Speaker 3: like this is me. I want to be me. I
- 24:36Speaker 3: want to show everybody who I am, and this is
- 24:39Speaker 3: my kind of team. He's more of. I want to
- 24:42Speaker 3: build something that's sustainable. I want to build something that wins,
- 24:46Speaker 3: not just this year, but for the next fifteen years.
- 24:50Speaker 3: And I think sometimes those decisions are not always the
- 24:55Speaker 3: most popular decisions at this moment, saying all that he
- 24:59Speaker 3: needs needs to definitely come up with a lot of
- 25:03Speaker 3: value to be able to fill in for the guys
- 25:04Speaker 3: that he's lost. When you figure Nemo's twenty seven home runs,
- 25:08Speaker 3: when you figure what Pete Alonso has done and what
- 25:11Speaker 3: he did in this past year, when you figure in
- 25:15Speaker 3: Jeff McNeil, I get it's been a while since he
- 25:17Speaker 3: won a batting title, but he's still an above average
- 25:20Speaker 3: hitter and the best, if not one of the best
- 25:23Speaker 3: closers in the game. And Edwin Diaz all gone to
- 25:28Speaker 3: fill in for those. Luke Weaver and Devin Williams good start,
- 25:33Speaker 3: There's a lot he needs to do on this offense
- 25:35Speaker 3: that was actually pretty good last year. It's the starting
- 25:38Speaker 3: pitching that cooked them, so it'll be interesting. But another
- 25:43Speaker 3: piece out of the Mets is gone.
- 25:47Speaker 1: Okay KP. Jeff McNeil and Francisco Lindor got into it
- 25:52Speaker 1: several years ago, and then it was reported that they
- 25:54Speaker 1: got into it again this past year. They're one of
- 25:58Speaker 1: a billion get into it situations that occur throughout a
- 26:01Speaker 1: baseball season, but they're in New York, so some of
- 26:04Speaker 1: them have become public. It's hard to dissect how to
- 26:10Speaker 1: view this one. Is it just because the Mets want
- 26:13Speaker 1: to clear some more money and get David Stearns his
- 26:16Speaker 1: own guys in there, or is there also a factor
- 26:22Speaker 1: to switch up personalities involved in the clubhouse. I mean,
- 26:26Speaker 1: if there are two guys that go at it every
- 26:28Speaker 1: once in a while, do we like it? Is it good?
- 26:30Speaker 1: Is it healthy? Or do they prefer to have two
- 26:34Speaker 1: bestest friends that are always combo or you know, in
- 26:38Speaker 1: the lineup together frequently.
- 26:39Speaker 2: I mean, I think all these things are fair, but
- 26:42Speaker 2: you know, they also really didn't have a place for
- 26:45Speaker 2: Jeff McNeil. You bring in someone like Marcus Simi who's
- 26:48Speaker 2: going to play every day second base. You have Mark
- 26:50Speaker 2: Vientos and a Brett Bady are going to be kind
- 26:52Speaker 2: of competing for third base. Jeff McNeil is a fine outfielder.
- 26:56Speaker 2: Is he a goal glove caliber outfielder. No, but he's
- 26:58Speaker 2: kind of a jack of all trades, could kind of
- 27:00Speaker 2: fit in anywhere. You know, this could just be more
- 27:03Speaker 2: about he just kind of became the odd man out in,
- 27:07Speaker 2: you know, the way their roster was configured. But I
- 27:09Speaker 2: really do like the moves on the on the A
- 27:12Speaker 2: side because I do think the young core of the
- 27:14Speaker 2: A's players is something promising. I think once they're able
- 27:18Speaker 2: to kind of build a pitching staff around them, and
- 27:20Speaker 2: I don't think that's really gonna happen until they moved
- 27:22Speaker 2: to Vegas, because I don't think there's a ton of
- 27:24Speaker 2: free agents wanting to sign in Sacramento at this point,
- 27:28Speaker 2: given how hit or friendly it is, how kind of
- 27:31Speaker 2: far behind it is on their facilities. But I do
- 27:33Speaker 2: love what they're gonna be able to do. From the
- 27:35Speaker 2: offensive side. You have guys like Jeff McNeil and Jack
- 27:38Speaker 2: Wilson who just are really tough out who put the
- 27:41Speaker 2: ball in play, and you think about the guys around them,
- 27:43Speaker 2: I think they're gonna be able to score a lot
- 27:45Speaker 2: of runs, and they're gonna need to be able to
- 27:47Speaker 2: score a lot of runs to win games because their
- 27:48Speaker 2: pitching staff isn't quite there yet.
- 27:51Speaker 1: What do you think of the A's heading into next Yearocratz?
- 27:55Speaker 1: If they just wipe out May, they would have been
- 27:58Speaker 1: close to a playoff team this back season. They need
- 28:01Speaker 1: more pitching. I think that's pretty obvious. I think the
- 28:03Speaker 1: lineup is a playoff worthy lineup, I would say so.
- 28:08Speaker 3: I think they have. I think they have a good
- 28:10Speaker 3: mix of what KP just said. I mean McNeil pop
- 28:14Speaker 3: you ten to twelve home runs. Jacob Wilson will pop
- 28:18Speaker 3: you ten to twelve home runs. So those are the
- 28:20Speaker 3: contact guys. I think Rook has been just that solid,
- 28:25Speaker 3: solid DH for this team. And then with the emergence
- 28:28Speaker 3: of Nick Kurtz last year, you have an aircraft carrier
- 28:34Speaker 3: that makes Brent Rooker the guy that you're like, I mean,
- 28:38Speaker 3: who do we go after here? I guess my better
- 28:40Speaker 3: matchup is against the lefty. I'll try to go after
- 28:42Speaker 3: Nick Kurtz. I think they have a good lineup. I
- 28:45Speaker 3: think Soderstrum's full year of being in the big leagues
- 28:49Speaker 3: after a full year of being in the big leagues
- 28:51Speaker 3: will be huge, and I think Low Dog is going
- 28:54Speaker 3: to have a bounce back year. They have a great lineup.
- 28:57Speaker 3: But man, you can't you can't win like you can't
- 29:00Speaker 3: win the way they were trying to win last year. Whatever,
- 29:03Speaker 3: if it's Sacramento or not. KP will tell you if
- 29:06Speaker 3: you're standing out in the field in Sacramento, Toronto, Philly,
- 29:11Speaker 3: wherever it is, and you just scored seven runs and
- 29:14Speaker 3: you're losing eight to seven and the seventh inning, it's draining.
- 29:18Speaker 3: It drains on you. It just drains on you watching
- 29:21Speaker 3: more guys run in from the bullpen, watching more runs
- 29:25Speaker 3: get given up, and it's a track meet out there.
- 29:27Speaker 3: So they have to find a way to get quality
- 29:31Speaker 3: innings from the starters but also be able to just
- 29:35Speaker 3: flat out give up less runs. And they get rid
- 29:37Speaker 3: of JP Sears, they got rid of their lockdown closer
- 29:41Speaker 3: and Mason Miller. So yes, you get rid of May
- 29:45Speaker 3: and all that stuff is great, Like, you know, you
- 29:49Speaker 3: had a decent season, Try to finish an entire season,
- 29:53Speaker 3: not just the last month and a half. Two months
- 29:55Speaker 3: without Mason Miller. They had a stop a stop gap cloth.
- 29:59Speaker 3: I mean they had guy that stopped the game in
- 30:01Speaker 3: the ninth inning in Mason Miller, and now they don't
- 30:04Speaker 3: have it. They got a lot of work to do
- 30:06Speaker 3: on the pitching side. It's another team that I'm going
- 30:08Speaker 3: to be pushing that over all year next year.
- 30:12Speaker 1: Yeah, that park's tough. Did you get time there, KP.
- 30:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I played there. I played there early, so it
- 30:20Speaker 2: was a little cooler when I was there.
- 30:22Speaker 4: But it's still a launching pad.
- 30:24Speaker 2: I mean, there's runs are always going to be flying
- 30:28Speaker 2: on the board there. It's hard to you know, it's
- 30:31Speaker 2: much like Colorado. You know there and you're expecting to
- 30:35Speaker 2: score a lot of runs. And to Crats's point, when
- 30:37Speaker 2: you're someone that's in the field, whether you're in the
- 30:39Speaker 2: outfield or infield, and guys are just running around the bases,
- 30:42Speaker 2: you're constantly going to the bullpen, it does affect your
- 30:45Speaker 2: offense over the course of the year, the more you're
- 30:47Speaker 2: standing on your feet. So, you know, I love their offense.
- 30:51Speaker 2: We forgot about shay Langeliers also a really good player.
- 30:54Speaker 2: The guys capable of hitting thirty home runs. So like
- 30:57Speaker 2: you think about their lineup from top to bottom, they
- 30:59Speaker 2: have right and lets you know, contact, they have some speed,
- 31:02Speaker 2: they have some pop, They're gonna score runs. It just
- 31:05Speaker 2: comes down to if they can get enough pitching. You know,
- 31:07Speaker 2: you saw what happened when they went out and signed
- 31:10Speaker 2: a seven reno. They had to severely overpay, and then
- 31:14Speaker 2: they got a frustrated player when he actually got the
- 31:17Speaker 2: Sacramento and played. You know, I think if they do
- 31:21Speaker 2: a good job and just continue to kind of lock
- 31:24Speaker 2: these guys up and kind of built for two to
- 31:26Speaker 2: three years from now, you know, I think they're gonna
- 31:29Speaker 2: be a team that's gonna be really good. But they
- 31:31Speaker 2: got to find a way to get pitching. And I
- 31:32Speaker 2: don't know much about their their minor league depth and pitching.
- 31:34Speaker 2: If they have options that they're able to bring up,
- 31:37Speaker 2: but it's it's tough shoes to fill when you have
- 31:39Speaker 2: a guy like Mason Miller leave and even jpcre is
- 31:42Speaker 2: very reliable.
- 31:43Speaker 4: Is he an ace on a staff? No, But sometimes
- 31:46Speaker 4: you need guys.
- 31:46Speaker 2: That can make their thirty two starts and you know,
- 31:49Speaker 2: throw one hundred and eighty innings a year.
- 31:52Speaker 1: Yeah. Right now, their pitching is not close. You know,
- 31:54Speaker 1: I'm looking as you guys are talking. But hitting wise,
- 31:57Speaker 1: everybody in the lineup was above average by a pretty
- 32:00Speaker 1: nice margin. Besides the bottom three in the regular order,
- 32:04Speaker 1: which would include Lawrence Butler, who was more of a
- 32:06Speaker 1: league average guy this past season with the bat, and
- 32:09Speaker 1: then they have Max Muntzy pegged to third, the other
- 32:11Speaker 1: Max Monty, and Denzel Clark who's sick in center field.
- 32:14Speaker 1: Everybody else is nicely above average if you go off
- 32:18Speaker 1: numbers like weighted runs created plus or ops plus. So
- 32:20Speaker 1: they're building something nice with the core. They should do
- 32:23Speaker 1: some spending on the free agent market. I'm not saying
- 32:25Speaker 1: they're going to go out and spend one hundred and
- 32:27Speaker 1: fifty million bucks on a starter, but they have a
- 32:30Speaker 1: lot of work to do. You guys are right. I
- 32:31Speaker 1: don't know if they're going to do it, but we'll see.
- 32:33Speaker 1: In January. Hey, good for Rob Refsnyder signing a contract
- 32:38Speaker 1: with the Seattle Mariners. And you know, he's one of
- 32:41Speaker 1: those specialists KP. He either bashes or is able to
- 32:46Speaker 1: solve left hand pitching as well as anybody in baseball,
- 32:49Speaker 1: and the Mariners recognize that. It's been around the game
- 32:52Speaker 1: for a while and he's really found a fit in
- 32:55Speaker 1: terms of how he's able to put together just incredibly
- 32:59Speaker 1: incredible quality at bats, so the Mariners pick him up.
- 33:03Speaker 1: For some reason, I lost where the money was, but
- 33:05Speaker 1: I believe Kratz. Do you have it off the top
- 33:08Speaker 1: of your head. One year? What is it? Six and
- 33:11Speaker 1: a half?
- 33:11Speaker 4: Six and a half.
- 33:12Speaker 1: Yeah, nice coin for Rob.
- 33:17Speaker 2: I love everything about it. I played with Rob Ruth Snyder.
- 33:19Speaker 2: I can't even remember when, but he was kind of
- 33:21Speaker 2: just up and down. He was still trying to kind
- 33:23Speaker 2: of figure out his.
- 33:23Speaker 4: Way in the game.
- 33:26Speaker 2: You know, all of a sudden he ended up in
- 33:27Speaker 2: Boston and he kind of found his niche in this game,
- 33:30Speaker 2: and I love that. And I remember seeing him in
- 33:32Speaker 2: the off season, I think the year before he signed
- 33:36Speaker 2: that two year deal with Boston, and he wasn't even
- 33:39Speaker 2: sure he wanted to continue to play. Not because he
- 33:41Speaker 2: didn't love the game. He just had a young family
- 33:44Speaker 2: and as Krats knows, it weighs on you a lot
- 33:46Speaker 2: being gone, and he ended up sticking it out. He
- 33:50Speaker 2: found his niche in this game with Boston. He really
- 33:52Speaker 2: found his specialty. And I love that he got paid
- 33:55Speaker 2: for it because typically you see guys that even dominate
- 33:58Speaker 2: left handed pitching because it usually ends up being about
- 34:01Speaker 2: a third of the at bats that a.
- 34:02Speaker 4: Lefty would get. You know, normally they get.
- 34:05Speaker 2: Shafted on, you know, being a specialist. And I know
- 34:08Speaker 2: earlier this offseason we had talked about just the quality
- 34:13Speaker 2: of left handed pitching in the major leagues right now,
- 34:16Speaker 2: and majority of them are starting game one of the playoffs.
- 34:18Speaker 2: You need a guy like this if you're Seattle, if
- 34:21Speaker 2: you got to go up against a Trek Scooble in
- 34:23Speaker 2: game one of a wildcart series. So good for him
- 34:26Speaker 2: for finally, you know, getting a good payday, and good
- 34:29Speaker 2: for the Mariners for you know, paying a guy six
- 34:32Speaker 2: and a half million dollars to platoon because typically the
- 34:35Speaker 2: right handed platoon guys are the ones that you know,
- 34:38Speaker 2: end up with two or three million dollars, So good
- 34:40Speaker 2: for them paying them six and have million bucks.
- 34:43Speaker 3: Yeah, and the fact that he did this at an
- 34:46Speaker 3: elite level is my favorite. Like I'm not saying he's
- 34:50Speaker 3: the best one available, I mean the best right handed
- 34:52Speaker 3: bat available to hit lefties. But when you look at
- 34:55Speaker 3: what he did is last two years ops plus over
- 34:59Speaker 3: one third, and people are gonna say, well, he's gonna
- 35:02Speaker 3: get overexposed in Seattle. Seattle had to go through Trek Scubele,
- 35:10Speaker 3: and they did. They beat him, But you know you're
- 35:14Speaker 3: gonna have to go through some quality lefties if you
- 35:16Speaker 3: want to win the American League, you were gonna have
- 35:19Speaker 3: to go through maybe Max Freed, Carlos Rodin, Trek Scubele,
- 35:25Speaker 3: Garrett Crochet like and I'm not even I'm not even
- 35:28Speaker 3: mentioning guys in there in their division right now. And
- 35:32Speaker 3: to me, he's the best one available. And he showed
- 35:35Speaker 3: I had it pulled up, how many like this is
- 35:38Speaker 3: a truly he can go in there, he can face
- 35:41Speaker 3: your lefties. But he has played this past year. He
- 35:44Speaker 3: played forty three games in the outfield, twenty nine of
- 35:49Speaker 3: them in right field, so he was bouncing around. He
- 35:51Speaker 3: DHD twenty times, and he played forty six in left field. Like,
- 35:57Speaker 3: and he's playing in Boston. That's a tough transition from
- 36:00Speaker 3: left field in Boston to right field in Boston. He
- 36:04Speaker 3: has really created since being a minor leaguer in the
- 36:08Speaker 3: Yankees organization. When he came up, it was like, I
- 36:11Speaker 3: mean on that on those minor league teams, it was
- 36:13Speaker 3: Tyler Austin, it was Aaron Judge, it was and he's
- 36:17Speaker 3: really good friends with Aaron Judge Tyler Wade, like guys
- 36:20Speaker 3: that were all prospects, and some of them have you know,
- 36:24Speaker 3: gone their separate ways Japan and utility guy and all
- 36:27Speaker 3: that stuff. He's really re upped his value since going
- 36:31Speaker 3: to Boston, similar to what like Randall Gritchik has done
- 36:36Speaker 3: in Arizona. It's like, hey, you you you gain that
- 36:39Speaker 3: value and all of a sudden, teams see what you
- 36:42Speaker 3: can bring. And defensively he's versatile enough. I think this
- 36:47Speaker 3: is a huge addition for the Mariners, but it can't
- 36:52Speaker 3: be enough. And at six point four to six point
- 36:55Speaker 3: five million what he got, it's a pretty expensive piece.
- 36:58Speaker 3: I love like with KP's said, I love that they
- 37:01Speaker 3: got him this, but it's it's a steep price. Let's
- 37:07Speaker 3: put it that way for somebody who's only going to
- 37:09Speaker 3: face lefties if you want him to have his most success.
- 37:12Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean this is speaking my language exactly. One.
- 37:15Speaker 2: I know the difficulty of playing right field and left
- 37:18Speaker 2: field in Boston, and you know they're two completely different
- 37:21Speaker 2: worlds playing out there. But my point is a guy
- 37:25Speaker 2: like this, you look at his numbers, the eight thirty AOPs,
- 37:29Speaker 2: the one point thirty ops plus, you can't really put
- 37:34Speaker 2: an accurate number on it, because people don't realize the
- 37:36Speaker 2: difficulty it is to sit there on the bench only
- 37:39Speaker 2: face left handed pitching. You were subject to the rotation
- 37:43Speaker 2: that you were playing in the upcoming weeks of when
- 37:45Speaker 2: you were actually going to get a chance to play.
- 37:47Speaker 4: I platooned when.
- 37:49Speaker 2: I was in Atlanta, and there was days I went
- 37:51Speaker 2: seventeen days without that bat because we didn't face the
- 37:54Speaker 2: left handed starter, or my spot didn't come up with
- 37:57Speaker 2: a lefty reliever coming in. So you have to kind
- 38:00Speaker 2: of look at that number and you have to realize
- 38:02Speaker 2: the difficulty that it comes with staying ready every single day,
- 38:05Speaker 2: not knowing when your number is gonna get called off
- 38:07Speaker 2: the bench, and then ultimately being only playing when your
- 38:11Speaker 2: numbers called when a left handed starter goes. It's really
- 38:13Speaker 2: difficult to do. I wish there was like a scale
- 38:15Speaker 2: that you could just put a one p thirty ops
- 38:19Speaker 2: in compared to like a guy who plays every day, because,
- 38:21Speaker 2: as Kratzy knows, is a guy who had an opportunity
- 38:24Speaker 2: to play every day at some point is queer and
- 38:26Speaker 2: also coming off the bench. It's two completely different ballgames.
- 38:30Speaker 3: I would love that I would love that I wish
- 38:32Speaker 3: there was. I wish there was a formula too, because
- 38:34Speaker 3: everyone's like, yeah, but you hit this or you hit that.
- 38:37Speaker 3: Like if you take the best superstar and you put
- 38:41Speaker 3: them on the bench, like KP said, seventeen days in
- 38:43Speaker 3: a row, four days in a row of not playing,
- 38:47Speaker 3: and then two more days off and you don't play again.
- 38:50Speaker 3: Or when you do play, you're facing that lefty, they
- 38:53Speaker 3: bring a righty in and the seventh and you only
- 38:55Speaker 3: got two at bats. I would love to see where
- 38:58Speaker 3: that sliding scale of your success goes. It is. It's hard,
- 39:02Speaker 3: and so to have the numbers that ref Snyder has
- 39:05Speaker 3: at a one thirty eight ops plus and the year
- 39:08Speaker 3: before one thirty one, I bet that's actually higher. You know,
- 39:13Speaker 3: we value like defensively if or we value in positions.
- 39:18Speaker 3: If a catcher hits has one hundred ops plus league average,
- 39:22Speaker 3: he's league average, but position average, he's above average coming
- 39:26Speaker 3: off the bench only facing lefties. If you have that,
- 39:29Speaker 3: if you have a thirty eight percent higher ops plus
- 39:33Speaker 3: than the rest of the league, to me, that's higher.
- 39:36Speaker 3: That's more like a fifty percent Because of how hard
- 39:39Speaker 3: it is to come off the bench and be productive
- 39:42Speaker 3: for an entire season.
- 39:44Speaker 1: Also, remember that we love using the I would say
- 39:48Speaker 1: basic advanced stats like OPS plus or weighted runs created
- 39:52Speaker 1: plus is very similar. They do not factor in if
- 39:56Speaker 1: you're hitting against left handed or right handed pitching, so
- 39:59Speaker 1: you can put a little more value on someone who's
- 40:01Speaker 1: hitting lefties based off something that's become a trend in
- 40:03Speaker 1: the game. Left handed pitching tougher than ever. To hit
- 40:07Speaker 1: left handed pitching specifically has gotten so difficult, right, there's
- 40:13Speaker 1: the talent, there's the platooning that gets done with many players.
- 40:17Speaker 1: It's there's a whole mix. There's guys, right you got
- 40:20Speaker 1: rid of the loogi's the guys who really cannot get
- 40:22Speaker 1: a right out. They're not really in the league anymore.
- 40:25Speaker 1: So you add everything up, and that is why I
- 40:27Speaker 1: think Rob Refsnyder gets six and a half versus maybe
- 40:31Speaker 1: three and a half. Crats will go back to your
- 40:33Speaker 1: other point about the Mariners not enough. I think they're
- 40:36Speaker 1: done on the position player side. I mean, I know
- 40:39Speaker 1: they didn't bring back Coorge Polanco, but I'm just slicing
- 40:42Speaker 1: up the lineup right now and what I think they're
- 40:43Speaker 1: going to do. And we know Jerry Depoto likes to
- 40:46Speaker 1: swing a trade, so if there's some crazy opening in
- 40:50Speaker 1: terms of someone that's available on the market, he'll have
- 40:52Speaker 1: a conversation. But I think it's more likely that they
- 40:54Speaker 1: try and load up and trade for maybe yet another reliever.
- 40:57Speaker 1: They love Jose Ferrer and actually they made a great
- 41:00Speaker 1: point again talking lefty righty. Farrere is someone who can
- 41:04Speaker 1: come in as left you with three good pitches out
- 41:07Speaker 1: of the bullpen, including I think two that or plus
- 41:09Speaker 1: after essentially an entire rotation of right handed starting pitchers.
- 41:14Speaker 1: So they just felt like they needed more than most
- 41:16Speaker 1: teams do because they want to have you. I would say,
- 41:19Speaker 1: I would say ideally three high leveraged lefties, which is
- 41:23Speaker 1: difficult to do. So maybe I think they've got two now,
- 41:25Speaker 1: maybe they end up getting a third. But anyway, back
- 41:27Speaker 1: to the lineup for a second, Randy Rose Arena should
- 41:30Speaker 1: be playing every day. Cale Rowley's going to play every day,
- 41:34Speaker 1: Julio Rodriguez is going to play every day, Josh Naylor
- 41:37Speaker 1: is going to play every day. D H. Probably your
- 41:40Speaker 1: most common situation here is can Zone against righty's, who
- 41:44Speaker 1: actually had a crazy year against righty's, and then ref
- 41:47Speaker 1: Snyder against lefties. Obviously, ref Snyder can play other positions too,
- 41:51Speaker 1: but they've got Victor Roeblaz who will still probably get
- 41:55Speaker 1: a good chunk of time out there. That's the one
- 41:56Speaker 1: spot that you could look at as maybe a weaker
- 41:58Speaker 1: spot where he could be a fourth outbuilder for a
- 42:00Speaker 1: first division team versus what he was. JP Crawford's going
- 42:03Speaker 1: to play every day, and then you've got second and third.
- 42:07Speaker 1: Cole Young I think is taking up second base. They
- 42:10Speaker 1: love him. I know you're going to make a face
- 42:12Speaker 1: Crafts because he's young and unproven, but he's one of
- 42:14Speaker 1: the top prospects in baseball and this is his time now,
- 42:16Speaker 1: this is his year. He's twenty two and a half
- 42:19Speaker 1: right now, so next year I think will be his
- 42:21Speaker 1: age twenty three season. And then Ben Williamson over at third.
- 42:24Speaker 1: That's where you can make the case. Do they bring
- 42:26Speaker 1: Gino Suarez back even though he wasn't great with them
- 42:28Speaker 1: down the stretch, so you don't have two super youngsters
- 42:31Speaker 1: at second and third. What do you want to see done?
- 42:34Speaker 3: I mean I said it before and you we'll see
- 42:37Speaker 3: in my wish list later on. Kotel Marte would do
- 42:41Speaker 3: for this team what I think the Mariners saw Josh
- 42:46Speaker 3: Naylor did for this team, not taking anything away from
- 42:48Speaker 3: cal Rally. Cal Rally was the reason they got to
- 42:50Speaker 3: where they were and did what they did. I get it.
- 42:53Speaker 3: But when you brought Josh Naylor in and he stole
- 42:55Speaker 3: twenty two bases in two months, when you bring in
- 42:58Speaker 3: a guy like you Hineo Suarez, who I think he
- 43:02Speaker 3: only had thirteen homers in his like fifty games he played,
- 43:05Speaker 3: I get it. He didn't do well. It changes the
- 43:07Speaker 3: look of that lineup for the other team when they're
- 43:10Speaker 3: attacking guys, and I think helped cal Ralely have success
- 43:14Speaker 3: the rest of the season and not fade or get
- 43:17Speaker 3: pitched around as much as he should have for a
- 43:19Speaker 3: guy that hit sixty homers. To me, I think if
- 43:22Speaker 3: you trade for Kateel Marte, I get what they're saying
- 43:25Speaker 3: about Cole Jung. He looks great. He's the PA guy,
- 43:29Speaker 3: so I'm always banging a drum for Pennsylvania guys that
- 43:33Speaker 3: need to come up. He's not gond tell Marte, and
- 43:38Speaker 3: that's okay. He hit two forty in the minor leagues
- 43:41Speaker 3: last year and that's okay. It doesn't mean he's not ready,
- 43:44Speaker 3: it just means not could tell Marte and it just
- 43:47Speaker 3: means Mariners have too often not done that last little thing.
- 43:52Speaker 3: And they did it last year and look how close
- 43:54Speaker 3: they got to make it the World Series. This team
- 43:57Speaker 3: has the pitching, kateel Marte puts them over the top.
- 44:01Speaker 3: And I say it the other day, I'll say it
- 44:02Speaker 3: again later on today they get him. They are the
- 44:06Speaker 3: best team in the American League.
- 44:09Speaker 1: Yep, it's a good call. And hey, I mean, I
- 44:11Speaker 1: just want to clarify. I completely agree. I think one
- 44:14Speaker 1: more movie is necessary. Could tell Marte or Brendan Donovan.
- 44:17Speaker 1: I'm just not positive they're going to go down that route.
- 44:19Speaker 1: I don't think they're going to go down the signing
- 44:21Speaker 1: route unless no one likes Gino Suarez and they get
- 44:23Speaker 1: him at a discount and they bring him back because
- 44:25Speaker 1: they love him. But otherwise I'm with you. The one
- 44:27Speaker 1: piece left, it's Donovan or it's kateel Marte. I just
- 44:29Speaker 1: don't know if they're actually going to do it. I
- 44:31Speaker 1: hope they do it. A couple quick hitters that we
- 44:44Speaker 1: didn't have time for earlier. Sean Neukom signed with the
- 44:48Speaker 1: White Sox. They're handing out money now, four and a
- 44:50Speaker 1: half million bucks on a one year contract. Jeff Passen
- 44:52Speaker 1: talked about how he was one of the most highly
- 44:55Speaker 1: sought left handed relievers on the market, so good for
- 44:59Speaker 1: the White Sox. That helps prove a little bit at
- 45:01Speaker 1: the margins. If Nukem looks great, you can usually flip
- 45:04Speaker 1: them at the deadline for a prospect, and you also
- 45:08Speaker 1: end up only paying what sixty percent or so of
- 45:12Speaker 1: that contract if the White Sox aren't playoff relevant. These
- 45:15Speaker 1: are the kind of moves that I think you should
- 45:17Speaker 1: be making left and right if you're the White Sox.
- 45:19Speaker 1: The way that you can catch up quickly. And we've
- 45:20Speaker 1: gone over this many times. Kevin is how the White
- 45:23Speaker 1: Sox should be able to spend their way out of
- 45:26Speaker 1: a rebuild a little bit quicker by making signings like
- 45:28Speaker 1: this and acquiring more prospects.
- 45:31Speaker 4: No doubt.
- 45:32Speaker 2: I think also read that he's going to compete for
- 45:34Speaker 2: a starting rotation job too. I don't think he's I
- 45:37Speaker 2: don't think he's signed there to be a reliever. I
- 45:38Speaker 2: think I had read that he's going to have a
- 45:41Speaker 2: chance to compete in the rotation and obviously if it
- 45:45Speaker 2: doesn't work out, his fallback he can be a legit
- 45:48Speaker 2: left handed weapon out of any bullpen. But yeah, I
- 45:52Speaker 2: think teams that are in a position like the White
- 45:54Speaker 2: Sox are in that need to, you know.
- 45:56Speaker 4: Do some things.
- 45:57Speaker 2: You go out and sign these players that you know
- 46:00Speaker 2: or only really commanding one year deals, given opportunity to play.
- 46:03Speaker 2: You have spots on your roster to fill.
- 46:05Speaker 4: Let him go out and play.
- 46:06Speaker 2: If you got to overpay a little bit, you know
- 46:08Speaker 2: you're only paying sixty percent of it because you're not
- 46:10Speaker 2: a playoff team, and go on acquire some prospects.
- 46:13Speaker 1: Yep, I'm with you, hey. And then last one, last
- 46:16Speaker 1: bit of news, and I truly think this was based
- 46:19Speaker 1: off yesterday's show. I'm not saying this to be hockey
- 46:22Speaker 1: or anything. We had Pete Alonso on the show yesterday
- 46:25Speaker 1: and one of our last questions was about how we
- 46:28Speaker 1: haven't heard any news about him linked to the World
- 46:30Speaker 1: Baseball Classic. He was part of that team last go Round?
- 46:35Speaker 1: What pops up? Hours later, Bryce Harper announced as the
- 46:40Speaker 1: first baseman for Team USA, or at least that he's
- 46:43Speaker 1: joining Team USA. Pete was like, dro call me, and
- 46:46Speaker 1: I'm looking and I'm thinking, why aren't they calling Pete yet?
- 46:49Speaker 1: Maybe they're waiting for Bryce to make a decision. Brice
- 46:52Speaker 1: didn't participate last go round, not that Pete can't still
- 46:54Speaker 1: join the team, but my guess is that there was
- 46:59Speaker 1: a wait see on Bryce first before they started exploring
- 47:03Speaker 1: phone calls to Pete, matt Olsen, maybe Michael Bush, guys
- 47:08Speaker 1: like that. So Krats, the timing was impeccable. We've had
- 47:12Speaker 1: all of these days on the calendar, and hours after
- 47:15Speaker 1: our conversation and Pete's public call out that got a
- 47:18Speaker 1: lot of play on social media, we get another member
- 47:23Speaker 1: of the World Baseball Classic USA squad at it, and
- 47:26Speaker 1: a great one for the USA fans out there in
- 47:28Speaker 1: Bryce Harper.
- 47:29Speaker 3: Don't think so highly of yourself, Scott that you're that
- 47:32Speaker 3: you're making that you're making trendy, trendy moves. But yeah,
- 47:36Speaker 3: one hundred percent, like it's time, it's time, you know,
- 47:39Speaker 3: maybe a call was made, Hey, Bryce Haye, how you feeling?
- 47:44Speaker 3: What's your what's your move? Because I know Pete, Pete
- 47:46Speaker 3: wants to Pete wants to play. I completely forgot, honestly,
- 47:52Speaker 3: Like when he said it yesterday, my mind's going, Okay,
- 47:54Speaker 3: who's going to play first? Can't you can't mess up
- 47:57Speaker 3: first base as a as team USA. I'm like there's
- 47:59Speaker 3: no way. I'm like, and I never thought of Bryce Harper,
- 48:04Speaker 3: Like he's right here in my backyard, and I'm like,
- 48:06Speaker 3: who's gonna play first? And I thought of Matt Olson,
- 48:09Speaker 3: and I'm like, man, there's no way, Like I haven't
- 48:12Speaker 3: heard anything about Matt Olsen, and then I never even
- 48:14Speaker 3: thought of Bryce Harper's. But good for Team USA. Look,
- 48:17Speaker 3: you can find a spot. You can find a spot
- 48:20Speaker 3: for Pete. You can even find a spot for Matt Olson.
- 48:23Speaker 3: You can have all three of them, bring them all like,
- 48:26Speaker 3: bring your lit's, just like you said in the movie,
- 48:28Speaker 3: bring your green hat, like we're going streaking in the
- 48:30Speaker 3: quad when the when the WBC.
- 48:34Speaker 1: You've got righty pop LEFTI pop with those guys first
- 48:37Speaker 1: base DH. We'll see how the rest of the roster
- 48:40Speaker 1: shakes out. Pete might still be part of it. But
- 48:42Speaker 1: I do think, yeah, Bryce saying let's do this had
- 48:46Speaker 1: a little bit to do with the oh hey, yeah,
- 48:49Speaker 1: it is December twenty third. I'd love to figure out
- 48:53Speaker 1: where I'm going to be in March. Am I going
- 48:55Speaker 1: to be justin spring training with the Ools? Or am
- 48:57Speaker 1: I going to be spending some time in the World
- 49:00Speaker 1: Baseball Classic? And two more orders of business crats hats,
- 49:04Speaker 1: and then a special shout out on the way out.
- 49:07Speaker 3: I mean, obviously I got my Santa hat on. There's
- 49:09Speaker 3: no team on it. What you guys are. You guys
- 49:12Speaker 3: are my team. There actually is a Phillies Phillies Santa
- 49:16Speaker 3: hat that we have somewhere in the house and it
- 49:18Speaker 3: actually fits me a little bit better because it's a
- 49:20Speaker 3: little bit larger. But it was like it was a
- 49:22Speaker 3: gift to It was a gift to my son, I
- 49:26Speaker 3: think years ago. But anyway, you guys are my You
- 49:29Speaker 3: guys are my Christmas gift. I don't need to ask
- 49:30Speaker 3: for anything. I love having KP on the show. I
- 49:33Speaker 3: love working with Scott every day. I love working with
- 49:36Speaker 3: Gab and Claude and Jare and Mark and Michael sometimes
- 49:41Speaker 3: Justin and if I'm forgetting somebody, Olivia, like everybody, all
- 49:47Speaker 3: everybody behind the scenes, even Aj he's off gallivanting in Africa.
- 49:53Speaker 3: But this ft is my is my Christmas gift and
- 49:58Speaker 3: I love it and I love all the fans that
- 49:59Speaker 3: are here. So everybody, Marry Christmas. Honika just ended. Happy
- 50:04Speaker 3: Honikah and a happy New Year.
- 50:07Speaker 1: Yeah, well said George and Vince and Sarah and so
- 50:10Speaker 1: many more. Frankie, I mean, the list goes on and on.
- 50:13Speaker 1: Behind the scenes, it's a big group and they're awesome,
- 50:15Speaker 1: and then we'll show one more tweet at the finish line.
- 50:19Speaker 1: We don't ask for this often, but when it does
- 50:22Speaker 1: get posted, we rarely show it on shows, and I'd
- 50:25Speaker 1: like to do it a little bit more frequently. Ref.
