New Mexico health officials issue a warning after a wild rat in Santa Fe County tested positive for plague — the first such case this year — following four other animal infections, including three dogs in Santa Fe and one in Bernalillo. The bacteria, Yersinia pestis, spreads via flea bites or direct contact with infected animals, including pets, which can contract it by eating infected prey or being bitten by plague-carrying fleas.
