- 0:01Speaker 1: It's Sean Patrick Means. He's joined us here from the
- 0:05Speaker 1: Salt Lake Tribune. He's a reporter and editor at that paper,
- 0:09Speaker 1: sltrib dot com. And Sean is also a movie reviewer.
- 0:14Speaker 1: You can find all of his reviews and other writings
- 0:17Speaker 1: at movie cricket dot net.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Good morning, Shawn, Good morning. So what do we got? Well?
- 0:22Speaker 2: Three movie? I saw three movies we can talk about
- 0:24Speaker 2: this week.
- 0:25Speaker 3: First out, though, something they did not screen for critics
- 0:28Speaker 3: around here was Becoming led Zeppelin, a documentary about the
- 0:32Speaker 3: legendary bands.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Just in a way you don't need to screen it
- 0:35Speaker 2: for critics, right.
- 0:36Speaker 3: No, No, they know their audience. Yeah, I grew up
- 0:39Speaker 3: on the song remains the same. So yes, you know
- 0:41Speaker 3: midnight movie, Yeah, the Great Midnight Movie or constant Midnight
- 0:45Speaker 3: Movie I suppose, Yeah, the the riveting scenes of people
- 0:49Speaker 3: backstage yelling about T shirt sales. You know. Anyway, this
- 0:54Speaker 3: is playing at the Megaplex theaters in the district Jordan
- 0:57Speaker 3: Commons End in Centerville. So if you are a led zeppelephant,
- 1:00Speaker 3: you already know that. So Ed Brass, I guess yeah.
- 1:05Speaker 3: I did see Love Hurts, which is sort of an
- 1:07Speaker 3: action rom com with Kiwi Kwan, the Oscar winner from
- 1:11Speaker 3: Everything Everywhere, all at once.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Uh.
- 1:13Speaker 3: He plays Marvin, a realtor in Milwaukee. Very optimistic, very positive,
- 1:17Speaker 3: and it's surprising to find out, very good at martial arts.
- 1:20Speaker 3: Uh when someone's trying to kill him, which happens a lot,
- 1:24Speaker 3: much more than you would expect in real estate.
- 1:25Speaker 2: So he keep trying to kill him.
- 1:27Speaker 4: He's trained, yes, and and he does and does help
- 1:31Speaker 4: with with fight scenes in movies.
- 1:33Speaker 3: He's worked, he's worked as a he's worked as a
- 1:35Speaker 3: as a martial arts performer and a stunt coordinator and
- 1:38Speaker 3: a fight a fight choreographer.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Uh.
- 1:40Speaker 3: For that's what he did in between his child acting
- 1:44Speaker 3: career and his adult acting career.
- 1:46Speaker 5: Uh.
- 1:47Speaker 3: We find out that Marvin is hiding from his gangster
- 1:49Speaker 3: brother who used to who used to use Marvin as
- 1:51Speaker 3: his assassin until he let one woman go, And that woman,
- 1:54Speaker 3: Rose Carlisle, played by Arianna Debos from West Side Story,
- 1:58Speaker 3: is back settling old scores. Turns out she got framed
- 2:01Speaker 3: for stealing money from Marvin's brother, and once it's set
- 2:04Speaker 3: things out right by nailing the brother's right hand assistant
- 2:08Speaker 3: who actually is embezzling.
- 2:10Speaker 2: So it's complicated.
- 2:13Speaker 3: So we got Kiwi Kwan doing a fair amount of
- 2:15Speaker 3: martial arts action and like I say, he's quite good
- 2:17Speaker 3: at it, and he did.
- 2:21Speaker 2: He does pretty well here.
- 2:22Speaker 3: It reminded me of sort of mid level Jackie Chan.
- 2:24Speaker 3: Okay movie, I wish the fights were a little better
- 2:28Speaker 3: or at least shot better, you know, so it is
- 2:31Speaker 3: kind of disappointing that way. I gave it two and
- 2:33Speaker 3: a half stars.
- 2:34Speaker 4: I mean, you can have some of the best fight
- 2:35Speaker 4: coordinators on set. If it's not shot correctly, it's.
- 2:39Speaker 3: Lost on And like Jackie Chan movies, he he went
- 2:42Speaker 3: with the Fred Astaire roll that you had to have
- 2:43Speaker 3: the whole body long, long long shots of the whole
- 2:46Speaker 3: body so you get the really in the fight, and
- 2:49Speaker 3: that you don't get enough of that here. So it's
- 2:50Speaker 3: too choppy. So all right, so what do we have next? Okay,
- 2:53Speaker 3: I'm still here. This is a This is a drama
- 2:56Speaker 3: from Brazil.
- 2:57Speaker 2: This is the Best Actress nominee. Yep.
- 2:59Speaker 3: Some people were surprised that it got three OSCAR nominations
- 3:02Speaker 3: Best Picture, Best Actress for Fernanda Torres, and Best International Film.
- 3:07Speaker 3: And with the What's happening with the Amelia Perez campaign
- 3:11Speaker 3: right now, it might, it might, it might take over
- 3:14Speaker 3: the international film category. So this has said It starts
- 3:19Speaker 3: in nineteen seventy one and Rio de Janeiro. We're following
- 3:21Speaker 3: a family, a prosperous family, husband, wife, five kids.
- 3:24Speaker 2: The dad, Rubens, used to be a congressman.
- 3:27Speaker 3: Now he's a dissident, arguing, you know, against the military dictatorship.
- 3:31Speaker 3: But he tells his wife Eunis that, you know, he's
- 3:33Speaker 3: too well known to be a target. He's you know,
- 3:35Speaker 3: they wouldn't they wouldn't go after him, that it would
- 3:37Speaker 3: be too much of a stinkmate. Well, yeah, and then
- 3:40Speaker 3: then they then they do Rubens and Units are taken
- 3:44Speaker 3: to a military facility. Units is detained for twelve days,
- 3:47Speaker 3: and when she gets out, she's told her husband has disappeared.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Doesn't she doesn't believe that.
- 3:52Speaker 3: She knows that the government has him or has killed him,
- 3:55Speaker 3: and so she starts collecting evidence to prove it. Not
- 3:57Speaker 3: an easy thing to do when the government controls the police, courts,
- 4:00Speaker 3: the newspapers, everything else.
- 4:01Speaker 2: Yeah, the movie is about how Eunice has to do.
- 4:04Speaker 1: You hear what Sean just said, by the way, Yeah, yeah,
- 4:07Speaker 1: just just bear that in mind.
- 4:08Speaker 3: Yeah, this is this is this is This is years
- 4:10Speaker 3: ago in a different country and nothing at all like
- 4:12Speaker 3: what's going on now in this country. The movie is
- 4:16Speaker 3: about how Unis has to transform her life after her
- 4:18Speaker 3: husband disappears so she could take care of their five kids,
- 4:20Speaker 3: go to law school, move to Sapallo, and become an
- 4:23Speaker 3: advocate for the thousands of people who were disappeared during
- 4:26Speaker 3: the military dictatorship. Yeah, Fernando Tarres plays Unis. She won
- 4:31Speaker 3: the Golden Globe.
- 4:33Speaker 2: She how do you feel about that?
- 4:34Speaker 3: Nominated for Best Actress. She's good, She's really powerful. She's
- 4:38Speaker 3: able to keep all of Unice's emotions going in their fear, grief, anger, determination.
- 4:45Speaker 2: It is a great performance.
- 4:48Speaker 3: Her mother was was is a great Brazilian actress who
- 4:52Speaker 3: shows up at the very end of the movie.
- 4:54Speaker 4: Uh.
- 4:54Speaker 3: And it was the last Brazilian actress to get nominated
- 4:58Speaker 3: for Best Actress back like six years ago for an
- 5:01Speaker 3: End of Montenegro three and a half stars for I'm
- 5:04Speaker 3: Still here right and it's over at the problem right then?
- 5:06Speaker 2: The Seed of a Sacred Figure.
- 5:08Speaker 3: The Seed of the Sacred Fig This is This was
- 5:10Speaker 3: shot in secret in Iran. Oh really, Yeah, the director
- 5:13Speaker 3: had to smuggle the footage out on thumb drives and
- 5:16Speaker 3: then had to smuggle himself out when he was arrested
- 5:20Speaker 3: and given an eight year prison sentence.
- 5:22Speaker 2: His sentence was eight years in a flogging. Well, they
- 5:24Speaker 2: should just give him an award and be done with it.
- 5:27Speaker 3: Mohammed Mohammed rasoulof The movie starts with a man who's
- 5:31Speaker 3: promoted to be an investigative judge in the Iran judiciary.
- 5:35Speaker 2: It's a big honor, but it also has some dangers.
- 5:37Speaker 2: He's told.
- 5:38Speaker 3: People who lose in court sometimes try to get revenge
- 5:40Speaker 3: on their judge. So so so his colleague says, yeah,
- 5:45Speaker 3: take this, and it's a gun.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Oh and and we know, we know what happens when
- 5:49Speaker 2: you show a gun. In the first part of the movie. Yeah, yeah,
- 5:51Speaker 2: it's got to be you. It's got to show up somewhere.
- 5:53Speaker 2: Checkof's gun, they call it.
- 5:55Speaker 3: His wife loves the prestige of her husband's new job,
- 5:57Speaker 3: but their teen daughters, ones in college ones in high
- 5:59Speaker 3: school the more cautious about it, especially when they realize
- 6:02Speaker 3: that dad's new job means that he's prosecuting the student
- 6:05Speaker 3: protesters who have been marching because the police beat up
- 6:08Speaker 3: a woman for not wearing her hit job correctly is
- 6:10Speaker 3: that this actually happened too, and she later died from
- 6:14Speaker 3: her injuries, which the police say, oh no, that wasn't us,
- 6:16Speaker 3: and of course it was. So the movie takes this
- 6:21Speaker 3: fictional family and runs them their lives parallel with this
- 6:24Speaker 3: real life event. The older daughter, like I said in college,
- 6:27Speaker 3: she brings a friend home with her when her friend
- 6:29Speaker 3: is injured and bleeding from getting shot by the cops
- 6:32Speaker 3: breaking up one of these protests. The story follows this
- 6:36Speaker 3: family and mostly how the dad becomes more paranoid and
- 6:39Speaker 3: suspicious of the family and certainly having that gun is
- 6:42Speaker 3: not a helpful thing.
- 6:45Speaker 2: This is one of the best movies of last year.
- 6:47Speaker 3: And I was really disappointed when it didn't get the
- 6:50Speaker 3: sort of recognition it should have gotten.
- 6:54Speaker 2: The Oscars.
- 6:55Speaker 3: I mean, it's I think, I think, I don't think
- 6:58Speaker 3: it got in for or no it to get nominated
- 7:00Speaker 3: for an international. It did the Cedar Thinker fig It's
- 7:03Speaker 3: playing at the Broadway four Stars of the Rare, the
- 7:07Speaker 3: Rare four Stars two weeks in a row.
- 7:09Speaker 1: Let's talk a little bit about this Amelia Piros, everything
- 7:15Speaker 1: going on with that. First of all, I haven't seen
- 7:17Speaker 1: the movie. Kerrie's seen it it is I can't think
- 7:20Speaker 1: of her name. Is she good enough to be nominated
- 7:24Speaker 1: for an Academy Award?
- 7:25Speaker 3: Carlo Sophia Gascon it's it's it's a really powerful performance.
- 7:30Speaker 3: I really, I really liked the movie. It was on
- 7:32Speaker 3: my top ten list. I know some there are some
- 7:34Speaker 3: critics who loved it. Some people who think it's just
- 7:36Speaker 3: the worst piece of trash ever to be nominated for
- 7:38Speaker 3: an OSCAR, Which I mean, if if as long as
- 7:40Speaker 3: as long as green Book is in the room, I
- 7:42Speaker 3: don't think that's the thing.
- 7:43Speaker 2: Crash would like a word.
- 7:46Speaker 5: The The issue is, The issue is is how much
- 7:52Speaker 5: the oscars are about what's what's happening on the screen
- 7:56Speaker 5: and what's happening.
- 7:56Speaker 3: In the in the ad campig, in the in the campaign,
- 8:00Speaker 3: and that's what that's what's going on here?
- 8:01Speaker 2: Is it? Is it? This actress? This this actress?
- 8:04Speaker 3: I mean, it's kind of historic, first transactress to get
- 8:07Speaker 3: nominated for Best Actress. But turns out that she has
- 8:10Speaker 3: a past that is pretty.
- 8:12Speaker 2: Awful and it's not a one off thing. It's multiple
- 8:15Speaker 2: a lot of a lot of bad tweets.
- 8:17Speaker 3: Yeah, and it has caused it has caused a lot
- 8:20Speaker 3: of changes. For the Academy ceremony, they were going to
- 8:23Speaker 3: do what they call the Fab five thing, where they
- 8:26Speaker 3: bring up five past winners to say nice things about
- 8:30Speaker 3: each of the nominees. And they thought, you know, who
- 8:32Speaker 3: are we going to get to talk nice things about
- 8:34Speaker 3: this this this person? And you know, the joke was, well, hey,
- 8:37Speaker 3: mel Gibson's free.
- 8:39Speaker 1: Oh h well, but yeah, it's the and they've withdrawn
- 8:46Speaker 1: all support to her. It's like it's like she's dead.
- 8:50Speaker 1: She apparently she does still have a ticket to the ceremony.
- 8:53Speaker 1: She's not gonna she can she can show up.
- 8:55Speaker 3: She has she has been saying, she's been saying she's
- 8:57Speaker 3: pretty well dropped out of the race.
- 8:59Speaker 2: Uh, she's not.
- 9:01Speaker 3: There's like the Spanish the Goyas, which is Spain, Spain's
- 9:04Speaker 3: version of the Oscars. Those are happening like this weekend,
- 9:07Speaker 3: and she says she's not gonna go things like that.
- 9:10Speaker 3: So and she's, yeah, I don't even I don't. I
- 9:12Speaker 3: doubt she even shows up for the for the ceremony.
- 9:15Speaker 3: And at this point, if I were, I wouldn't And
- 9:17Speaker 3: at this point it's very unlikely a lot of people
- 9:18Speaker 3: are going to vote for her. Yeah, and and and
- 9:22Speaker 3: and the question is going to be this was the
- 9:25Speaker 3: most nominated film, uh, this, this, this, this season, this year,
- 9:30Speaker 3: how many people are going to vote for the movie?
- 9:35Speaker 2: I predict a shutout. I I think it's very possible
- 9:38Speaker 2: at this point.
- 9:38Speaker 3: And you know, it seemed to be a lock for
- 9:41Speaker 3: the International Film Award, but I think now that the
- 9:44Speaker 3: backlash is such that no, it's it's not going to happen,
- 9:46Speaker 3: and a movie like I'm Still Here could definitely take
- 9:49Speaker 3: it on.
- 9:49Speaker 2: And it's too bad because Zoe Saldana and this is
- 9:51Speaker 2: really good. I agree, she won the Golden Globe.
- 9:54Speaker 1: Yeah, I got that a lot of people are being
- 9:57Speaker 1: critical of the director as well, saying, you know, he
- 10:00Speaker 1: filmed in France rather than Mexico and it's set in Mexico.
- 10:04Speaker 1: Uh he the and the Spanish that he that they
- 10:07Speaker 1: use in the movie is not.
- 10:11Speaker 2: Yeah, it's not.
- 10:11Speaker 3: It's more Castilian or something not not not Mexican dialects.
- 10:15Speaker 1: Somebody said it's it's Google Translate Spanish. And uh so anyway, yeah,
- 10:20Speaker 1: all right, what's next week?
- 10:21Speaker 2: Next week?
- 10:22Speaker 3: America, countin America, Brave New World. Uh uh, Anthony Mackie,
- 10:27Speaker 3: Sam Wilson, The New cap and Harrison Ford in the
- 10:30Speaker 3: in the William Hurt role, Yes, yes.
- 10:32Speaker 2: And Addington in Peru. Paddington in Peru, which is.
- 10:35Speaker 4: Darkest Peru, which I'm hearing good things about it?
- 10:39Speaker 1: Is it? Ben Wishaw is he the voice of Ben?
- 10:41Speaker 1: Is the voice of I just discovered him in Black
- 10:43Speaker 1: Doves on TV. He's really an interesting actor. Yes, all right,
- 10:48Speaker 1: thank you? Seawan means sl trip dot com, movie cricket
- 10:51Speaker 1: dot net.
- 10:52Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 10:53Speaker 4: Okay,
