- 0:07On October 12, 1967, the St. Louis Cardinals faced the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park for Game 7 of the 1967 World Series.
- 0:16The Red Sox had fought back from a 3-games-to-1 deficit to force a Game 7.
- 0:21And this is the NBC Radio broadcast of the final game featuring announcers Pee Wee Reese and Jim Simpson.
- 0:27Jim Lombard down looking to Elton Hart into the wind up the kick and the first pitch of the ball game.
- 0:36A little bit outside, a curve ball. Defensively for the Red Sox, Scott at first.
- 0:44Second base, Andrew. Shortstop, Petrocelli at third base.
- 0:48Boy, the pitch by Lombard to Brock. The ball hit out in the left field.
- 0:53Yostritsky going to, that ball may be in there. Yostritsky catches up with it.
- 0:57A great play by Kyle Yostritsky starting this ball game off right in that left field corner.
- 1:06And it looked like Brock may have dropped this game off with an extra base hit.
- 1:14Yostritsky playing over toward center, had a long way to run, but he's fast and he got there and he made the play.
- 1:21Kurt Blood, 4 for 25, batting 160. The first pitch by Lombard gets topped up out into center field.
- 1:29Reggie Smith could have no trouble with it underneath it and takes it for out number two.
- 1:39There has been only one previous 4-3 series in which the two seventh game starters have two and 0 records for the series.
- 1:471925, Walter Johnson of Washington and Nick Aldridge at the Pittsburgh club.
- 1:53Walter Johnson went all the way, but they lost the ball game 9-7.
- 1:58Jim Lombard, picking the Roger Mares. Her ball went after Kyle Strike 1.
- 2:04And you're going to hear noise all day. It flew away when the top half of the first inning here at Fenway Park, in Boston, the seventh game of the World Series.
- 2:13Jim Lombard picked his pitch. Better rolling inside. Elston Hart wanted that one.
- 2:20The count, one ball and one strike. Mares had a good series. He's batting 3-48, 8 for 23. He has one home run.
- 2:30And that was the one run that they got the cardinal draw for Jim Lombard over in Bush City. Here's the pitch.
- 2:37Back to the middle. Andrews backhand to ball. No chance to throw out Roger Mares.
- 2:43Both Lombard had a shot at that ball. Right back to the middle. He put his glove down, did not come up with it.
- 2:48Andrews, knowing that he had no chance to throw out Mares, just held onto the ball.
- 2:55So Mares, on his first base, was the first baser of the ball game.
- 3:02And it brings up Orlando Cepeda, 3 for 24. He has one run batted in. Batting 1-2-5.
- 3:15The umpires in today's game. Stevens behind home plate. Bollock at first.
- 3:19Umonk at second. Donatelli at third. The left fielder, Rungy at the right fielder, Paul Pryor.
- 3:26Orlando Cepeda, way back in that batter's box. Elston Hart gives the target. Lombard looks at Mares at first.
- 3:31Here's the pitch. Almost got him. Little inside. Ball one. It's two away.
- 3:41We're in the top half of the first inning. Orlando with that big bat of his.
- 3:47Thirty-six inches, 40 ounces. Right down on the end of it. Lombard looks at Mares. Here's the pitch.
- 3:52Inside. Ball two. Hart out in front of home plate, massaging the ball.
- 3:59Says something to Jim Lombard. Cepeda having trouble with that batter.
- 4:09As we said yesterday, he doesn't seem to be fooled on the pitches. He just can't make contact.
- 4:16The Q&O pitch. Here it is. Gather out to Mike Andrews at second base. He'll go to George Scott over first.
- 4:22And that's off of Cepeda. And that's off of the Carbos here in the first inning of thin-way play.
- 4:27So the score,
- 4:30and the Boston Red Sox coming to bat.
- 4:33With Peeley Rees, this is Harry Carrey. Joe Foy steps him in the batter's box to get things started.
- 4:39For the Red Sox here in the bottom of the first. OK, Peeley. Bob Gibson.
- 4:44He's won two games in this series. Thirteen and six all in the year. Facing Joe Foy. Ends the line up the pit.
- 4:51Outside, ball one. And as we've said so many times, Bob Gibson, he gets right back on that rubber as soon as he gets the ball from the catcher.
- 4:59He is ready to pitch. Into the wind up. Joe Foy, springs. Bows it back.
- 5:05One ball and one strike. Defensively for the Cardinals. Cepeda at first. Second base.
- 5:10Javier, shortstop. Max ball. Third base. Shannon. In left field. Brock.
- 5:16Into the wind up the pitch by Gibson. A curve ball. Low and outside. Out in center field. Way out there is Kurt Blood.
- 5:23In right field, Roger Maas, the catcher. Tim McCarver. And the pitcher, of course, Bob Gibson.
- 5:28Into the wind up. The two and one pitch to Foy. He started. Check these swings. Two and one. Inside.
- 5:36Joe Foy leading things off for the Red Sox here in the bottom half of the first inning.
- 5:40The Cardinals fail to score in the first inning.
- 5:44Into the wind up the pitch by Gibson. It's too high.
- 5:55So Bob Gibson, walks the first man he faces. And Harry, he doesn't do that too often.
- 6:04No, he doesn't.
- 6:07I can't lose. Batting 400. He's 4 for 10. He chokes up on the bat. Here's the pitch. He's once again down the first base line.
- 6:20Cepeda up with her flip the ball over to Javier, covering first. Moving down to second base, Joe Foy.
- 6:27Here's the tough situation for the Cardinals. They can't walk anybody intentionally in the very first inning.
- 6:38Again, here's a real hard hitter up there. Todd Gostinsky. It's interesting to see what they do.
- 6:44But I think that Biff Williams may have this in mind. He's just going to test the Cardinals and see if he's going to pitch to them.
- 6:50It looks like they are. It's pretty hard to walk a man in the first inning intentionally. They're going to pitch to Jostinsky.
- 6:58Bob Gibson, the kick. In there, just got the inside counterstrike one.
- 7:05You better believe he will be careful with this fellow. Jostinsky, 9 for 22. Three home runs in this series.
- 7:14Batting in a 2-4-0-9. Down at second base, Joe Foy. Jostinsky holds that bat high. Gibson looks back at Foy at second.
- 7:23And wakes the wheel, flips the ball to Max Foy. As it looked like Max Foy was shot stopped with pointy cut in back of Foy, his ball broke off at second base.
- 7:33Like he may be going.
- 7:36One strike. On his 50th, it's one away. Where's the bottom half the first inning.
- 7:43Gibson looks back at second. Here's the pitch. Best ball outside. Makes it count one ball and one strike.
- 7:50Bob Gibson trying to win a third game here in this seventh game of the World Series.
- 8:07Here's the pitch. He's sent a little lazy looper out to shortstop Max Foy. Fips his glass and takes it. And Gibson jammed him with that pitch.
- 8:16It's two away. Brings up Ken Halson.
- 8:23Talking about things you don't see too often. You don't see as much. You get jammed too much with a fast ball.
- 8:30Halson, one for nine. Batting 111.
- 8:35Gibson checking with McCarver. His pitcher, McCarver giving it a side.
- 8:42Gibson sets. Looks back at second. Here's the pitch. Curveball in there for fast strike one.
- 8:49Gibson looks to me like he may be changing his pattern.
- 8:53And in the first two games he started off with a lot of fast balls. Today he's throwing a few breaking balls already.
- 9:02One strike on Ken Halson. Here's the pitch. Swinging a nice strike here. Good fast ball.
- 9:07He's on top of Halson with two strikes.
- 9:12Joe Foy down at second base. It's two away.
- 9:17Bottom half to first innings. This game has just gotten underway.
- 9:23Halson way back in that batter's box. Moving that bat back and forth. Now he's set so is Gibson.
- 9:28The pitch. Fast ball in there for fast right three. Halson part looking so that's off of the roadside.
- 9:35Near the bottom half the first inning. The Scores. Sandler is nothing and Baston nothing.
- 9:43Top half of the second inning coming up and Tim McCarver and Mike Shannon and Huling and Javier will be the first three hitters coming up for the St. Louis Cardinals.
- 9:52No score. Bob Gibson after walking the first man really went to his fast ball and good breaking ball and got the next three men out.
- 10:01Here's McCarver leading it off for the Cardinals.
- 10:05Top half of the second inning. McCarver, Shannon and Javier. Jim Lombard. He's ready.
- 10:11Halson Hart giving the sign. Jim kicks that big leg up in the air high. Here's the pitch. The ball is popped up.
- 10:20Puts his glasses underneath it and takes it for at number one.
- 10:30Both of these pitchers, if you can tell this, look sharp.
- 10:36Mike Shannon. He has one home run in the series. Five for twenty batting two fifty. The big third baseman.
- 10:47Hits from the right side right down on the end of that bat. Lombard. The kick. The pitch.
- 10:53A third ball. He was taking all the way. It's in there for call strike one. Both of these pitchers. Lombard for the Red Sox. Gibson for the Cardinals.
- 11:01Had good control. There's no need of taking anything. They're very solid walk anyone. There's a sign on third ball.
- 11:08Come on. Missed. Track two.
- 11:15And that's been the pattern. Lombard has followed against Shannon.
- 11:20Try to get that first striking on it. Then sat on him with that curve ball. He comes way around but away at third base.
- 11:28No balls. Two strikes on Shannon. It's went away.
- 11:31Another side on. The first strike out.
- 11:39For Jim Lombard.
- 11:42And that'll bring up a little fellow that's had a real fine series. Not only with the batting three thirty three seven for twenty one.
- 11:51But what a series he's had in that field. He's made a couple of great plays at second base.
- 11:57Javier. Eddie Pursue. The shortstop.
- 12:02Utility infielder for the Cardinals. Says you really can't appreciate this fellow until you see him play and be with him day in and day out.
- 12:10Quite a player. Chokes up on the bat. Lombard kick. Here's the pitch. It's foul straight back. Elson Hart. Over to his right.
- 12:18Stops on it. Right back in the stands. Strike one. It's two away.
- 12:22We're in the top half of second inning here at Fenway Park. The seventh game of the World Series.
- 12:28Harry Carey and I'm Pee Wee Reese bringing you this seventh game.
- 12:33And it certainly has been a pleasure. Bringing you all seven games of the World Series here on radio.
- 12:39The kick for Lombard. There's a face hit out into left field. Jostemsky takes it all one half.
- 12:46And that's the second hit for the Cardinals. One by Mass and one by Javier.
- 12:53That's the eighth hit in the series for Javier. He likes to run. And as Harry told you, Maxwell likes to hit and run.
- 13:05Let's see what they do. We'll watch Javier at first. Lombard watching over at first. He's not going. A curve ball in there. Strike one.
- 13:14We have the pitcher up next, Bob Gibson. And he is not a bad hitter.
- 13:20Maxwell steps back out of that box. Checks for these codes. Joe Schultz at third base. Coaching in first base. Dick Sissler.
- 13:27That's for the Cardinals. Lombard takes it easy. Here's the pitch. And Elson Hart pitched out a thought that Javier may be going.
- 13:36So that makes account one ball and one strike. Maxwell still checking with Joe Schultz. Steps out of the box.
- 13:43Schultz giving the sign down at third. Touching the cap. The letters.
- 13:48Well, if he gave anything, he's already given it because Maxwell's back in the Lombard. Clips over to first.
- 13:54And Javier had a pretty good lead. He may be going. One ball and one strike. It's two away. Top half to second inning.
- 14:02Maxwell looking out at Lombard. Lombard going and he flips over to first again. And Javier diving back in there.
- 14:13Javier gets a pretty good lead. Lombard looks over at Javier.
- 14:20Here's the pitch. Javier made a bluff but he did not go in there. All strike two. And Hart came out behind that batter ready to throw.
- 14:30A good bluff to Javier at first base. It's two away.
- 14:39Macarvis started this inning off by popping up. Shannon struck out. Javier single.
- 14:45Maxwell is a hitter with one ball and two strikes on him. The throw to first base. Javier back in plenty of time.
- 14:53Maxwell has two for 15. Batting 133. Jim Lombard. He's stooped over getting the sign.
- 15:06Here's the pitch. Sadon Kerrball just missed. Two and two. He's tough on right handers. Tough to stay in there.
- 15:18Maxwell checking with Schultz at third base. They're playing Maxwell straight away not too deep.
- 15:26Lombard sets. Here's the pitch. There goes Javier. The thin side. Hart threw it. They got it. Javier was thrown out by Elston Howard at just third.
- 15:38And that's all for the Carlton's here. They pop it. But they're one and a half in the play. It's the same rule.
- 15:44It's time of nothing. And the Boston Red Sox, nothing.
- 15:53Elston Howard made some throw. The pitch to Maxwell was low and inside right off his shoe pops.
- 15:58And Howard had a spin around and throw and he threw perfectly.
- 16:01George Scott takes the first pitch by Gibson outside. Ball one.
- 16:11Interpreter, George Scott. Reggie Smith. Enrico Petruccelli. Here's the pitch by Gibson. Low and inside. Ball two.
- 16:23Scott batting 227 in the series. He has five for 22.
- 16:30He's choking on the bat a little bit today. Gibson. Kerrball. In there for Carlstrike one.
- 16:37That's what makes this fellow a good pitcher. He can throw hard, but he kind of finesses you every once in a while.
- 16:43He gets behind you, he can still get that Kerrball over. There it is. A good fastball sprung out on this strike two.
- 16:50And looked like that pitch was right in the power of George Scott, but just a little bit inside.
- 16:55He tried to chop down on him. No contact. Two and two's account. Gibson the wind up the kick.
- 17:01Kerrball, we've got him looking. George Scott looks at the third strike.
- 17:07And that's the second strike out.
- 17:11By Bob Gibson. That brings up Reggie Smith, the center fielder for the Red Sox.
- 17:18You know the Cardinals had played in ten World Series. They've won seven of the games.
- 17:25And five of those seven wins went to the seventh game. And the Cardinals have never lost a series that they've gone to seven games in.
- 17:35Reggie Smith. Gibson. First pitch, run on miss, strike one.
- 17:40It's one away. Win the bottom half the second inning.
- 17:44Here at Fenway Park in Boston, the seventh game of the World Series. Gibson pitches.
- 17:52Reggie Smith started, checked his way. I guess he got a piece of it. Strike two.
- 18:00Bob Gibson, working fast. McCarver, giving the signs. Ends the wind up the kick. The 0-2 pitch.
- 18:07A grounder after second base and Javier on a big hop. Rips the ball over to Cepeda. And that's all for Reggie Smith.
- 18:15So it's two up and two down here in the bottom half of the second inning. Pettuselli gets a nice hand.
- 18:24He's the shot stop for the Red Sox. He was in a little batting swamp until yesterday.
- 18:30He just knocked two out of the park. He has good power. Gibson curve ball, low.
- 18:36And I saw on the paper with Pettuselli, said the two home runs he hit yesterday were fastballs.
- 18:42Gibson starts him off with a curve today. The 1-0 pitch. Another curve ball, swing on, miss, strike one.
- 18:51They play Pettuselli, especially Kirk Flood out in center field around to left center, the full.
- 19:00Pettuselli, Gibson, the kick. Another curve ball, swing on, miss, strike two. One ball and two strikes.
- 19:08The first time Pettuselli saw Gibson in the first game, Gibson struck him out three times.
- 19:18One ball, two strikes. The kick by Gibson, the pitch. A curve ball foul straight back.
- 19:25And a count remains one and two. Coaching at first base by the Red Sox, the great second baseman Bobby Doerr.
- 19:35Over at third base, Ed Patowski. He struck Pettuselli out and that's all for the Red Sox.
- 19:41Here in the bottom half of second, the score. The St. Louis Cardinals nothing and the Boston Red Sox nothing.
- 19:48Now Maxwell is a hitter leading off the top half of third.
- 19:53You remember he was a hitter when they threw out Javier at second base trying to steal. Curve ball.
- 19:58One inside. Ball one. It'll be Maxwell, Gibson, and Brock.
- 20:07Rondberg kicks that arm. Fastball hit down at third base round, down at side.
- 20:13Leontar down at third. Bates it, the fans give him a little blaze.
- 20:19What a job these umpires have done in the series, eh? Certainly have, Peewee.
- 20:26One ball, one strike. Calling time. It must be something draped over the wall in left field.
- 20:33Frank Umont, the second base umpire, started it.
- 20:37And there it is, a towel it looks like.
- 20:44Well I think it's a towel. It looks to me like a fan.
- 20:50Climbing up in the screen half here for they're getting him down. This game is ready to start.
- 20:55Rondberg, pitch to Maxwell, hit out into center field. Ready to step going way back, way back, way back.
- 21:01It's off of the wall. Maxwell, down to second. Going into third.
- 21:05Kinnhausen over to pick up the ball and they hold on to it as Maxwell hits one off of that center front field wall straight away in center field.
- 21:14That's unusual power for Dow Maxwell who this year hit one home run during the regular season and that was inside the park.
- 21:23He really hit this one yesterday in a fly ball deep in the center that surprised everybody.
- 21:28And today he surprised them even more by hitting one off the top of the center field wall.
- 21:33Well it's a couple for Dow Maxwell.
- 21:36Being off the third inning, the infield is in.
- 21:39Bob Gibson is the hitter, the pitcher for the Cardinals.
- 21:43Rondberg looks so with third. Maxwell here's a kick to pitch.
- 21:47Curveball in there for Carlisle. You know Harry, Maxwell hit a couple of hard balls to center field yesterday with Paul.
- 21:52Yes, that's the one that I was referring to, up here.
- 21:55It's unusual for him to hit straight away. He usually hits the ball towards right field.
- 21:59The pitch by Rondberg. Outside one ball and one strike.
- 22:06So the Cardinals are threatening here in the top half of third and eighth.
- 22:10The Red Sox have the infield pulled in with no one away.
- 22:16Gibson's a hitter.
- 22:18Rondberg looking down at his catcher Elson Howard. Looks over at Maxwell.
- 22:22Here's the kick for pitch. Curveball inside.
- 22:27Two balls, one strike on Gibson.
- 22:30Gibson checks with Joe Schultz at third base.
- 22:36Not a bad hitter.
- 22:40He will just be trying to get a piece of it. Here's the kick to pitch.
- 22:44That fastball just got the outside. Not a mix of counts, two and two.
- 22:49Maxwell down at third. Just got two tripping off the center field wall.
- 22:54Oh, that smoke out there. I believe the building's on fire out beyond the center field fence.
- 23:00That's all we need, Harry.
- 23:07Two and two. The cat on top gets it. Here's the pitch.
- 23:11A nine-five, nine-five, third base.
- 23:17He's through. Over to the bag with Maxwell being very alert.
- 23:23When he saw the ball hit, he went back to the bay.
- 23:28And Gibson really cleaned that one.
- 23:31But all it is is a big out.
- 23:35It's supposed to be a game of skill, not bravery, Peewee.
- 23:42So it's one away now. Maxwell still down at third.
- 23:46And it brings up Lou Brock. The infield is still in.
- 23:53On board. Set. Here's the pitch. Curveball rolling outside.
- 24:00Now what? Against Longboard, Brock is nothing out of nine.
- 24:05It's the only pitch he's been able to stop him so far.
- 24:09Well, let's see how he's trying to pitch him. That pitch was going outside.
- 24:12It looked like Longboard wanted it.
- 24:15Here's the kick, the pitch.
- 24:17Maxwell outside. Ball two.
- 24:21It's one away. The runner's still down at third base.
- 24:25Down Maxwell, the Cardinals, with a top half to third inning. No runs for the Cardinals, but they have three hits.
- 24:32Boston has no runs on no hits.
- 24:37Lou Brock with a count of two balls. No strikes on him. Steps out of there.
- 24:42As Longboard takes a little bit too much time.
- 24:48Takes a little bit too much time for Brock. Brock now checking with Shultz.
- 24:52He's coached third base.
- 24:55Longboard just standing there staring down at Brock.
- 24:58Now he's ready. Here's the pitch. Two and two.
- 25:02Now foul out the left. Back up in the stands.
- 25:09And again, two balls and one strike.
- 25:14Brock had a fine series.
- 25:16He has four stolen bases, has one home run, three runs bad at him.
- 25:26A cool 400. Right now it's two balls and one strike on him.
- 25:31Longboard, here's the pitch.
- 25:34And missed strike two. A good fast ball. On the way.
- 25:42That ball was by Brock.
- 25:46Looks like he may be looking for something.
- 25:49And the count of two and two. One away.
- 25:51Maxwell still down at third.
- 25:55They play Brock deep and straight away at the infielders end.
- 26:02Longboard looks over at Maxwell's third. The kick, the pitch.
- 26:06A foul off the left. Back in the stands.
- 26:18No runs. Three hits by the Cardinals.
- 26:23No runs, no hits for the Red Sox.
- 26:25Longboard against Gibson.
- 26:29They have both won two games in the series.
- 26:32The seventh and final game of the World Series.
- 26:34Here's the pitch. It's packed up.
- 26:36That's a shot, fast ball. Back here to the edge of the grass.
- 26:40And Maxwell cannot throw a net.
- 26:44And it's two away.
- 26:54Longboard. Not out of a jam yet.
- 27:00But he's getting in pretty good shape as Maxwell started this inning off with a triple off the center field wall.
- 27:09Two outs later he's still down there.
- 27:12And it brings up Kurt Flood.
- 27:15Who's flying out to center field his last time. The first pitch turned his two-eye. Ball one.
- 27:20He knows the first pitch to practically every hitter is tight.
- 27:24The inside part of the plate.
- 27:28He seems to have a pattern, Harry.
- 27:31That fast ball tight inside and breaking pitch away.
- 27:35That's a ball hit out of center field to base hit.
- 27:37Reggie Smith takes it all one-half in. The score is Maxwell the first run in this ball game.
- 27:42And Kurt Flood gets his fifth hit of the series.
- 27:46Dropping in down Maxwell.
- 27:49So the Cardinals go out in front of this ball game by a score of one and nothing.
- 27:54Longboard.
- 28:02Doing a fine job of pitching getting two outs. Then Kurt Flood gets a base hit to score Maxwell. Roger Maas with a hitter.
- 28:11Longboard looks over Kurt Flood. Here is the pitch.
- 28:14Now hit by Scott out in the right field to base hit.
- 28:17Up at the ball pass and going into third is Kurt Flood. McAfee, Mace, and he's holding up that third base.
- 28:23On at first base, Roger Maas.
- 28:26He we the Cardinals now have five hits.
- 28:29We're in the third inning of this game.
- 28:31In the first two games of Longboard pitch, a total of 18 innings, they have a total of four hits.
- 28:37So that shot rest must make a difference.
- 28:41Well, I would say we have to, Harry.
- 28:45This fellow, as I said, pitched 290-some-odd innings during the season.
- 28:50And they had a tough penitentiary all the way and he is a big man.
- 28:54He had to pitch Sunday to beat the Minnesota Twins with a tough ball game.
- 28:57I saw it and so did most of the fans over the country.
- 29:01We had paired the game on NBC television.
- 29:03So he's had a tough year, but don't count him out yet.
- 29:06Sepeda, the first pitch inside ball one.
- 29:11Harry, I hope this fire over there doesn't spread.
- 29:15Look at that smoke billowing upwards.
- 29:19Still haven't seen any flame.
- 29:21Where there's smoke, there's fire.
- 29:25The one and only pitch to Orlando Sepeda.
- 29:28Has a ball hit Harry, but it's fouled and a left field line.
- 29:31He was a count up at one ball and one strike.
- 29:33On at third base, Kurt Blood.
- 29:35On at first base, Roger Mares.
- 29:40One ball, one strike on Orlando Sepeda.
- 29:43Had a rough series.
- 29:45The baby bowl has one run batted in.
- 29:48Three for 25 now.
- 29:50He got it out the first time after the second baseman, Mike Andrews.
- 29:54Run barn.
- 29:56Here's the pitch to Sepeda in there.
- 29:58Out like two.
- 30:03Two away.
- 30:04Runners on first and third.
- 30:06It can't be a serious fire.
- 30:08The smoke's only coming out at the top.
- 30:10Hehehehehe.
- 30:14Well, we'll watch it.
- 30:16Two strikes on Sepeda.
- 30:18It's two away when the top half of the third and the Cardinals have one run.
- 30:21They lead this game one and nothing.
- 30:23To kick the pitch.
- 30:24It's high and inside.
- 30:25Ball two.
- 30:30Jim McCarver.
- 30:33In the on deck circle.
- 30:37Run barn.
- 30:38The big winner for the Red Sox.
- 30:41Pitched the big games all year.
- 30:43They won 22 and lost nine during their regular season.
- 30:47And as we said, what a dog fight that was in the American League.
- 30:51Run barn sets.
- 30:53Looks at first and third.
- 30:54Here's the pitch.
- 30:55It gets away from Maston Hardt back up on the screen.
- 30:59A big high bounce and cutting in the score from third base.
- 31:03Kurt Flood going down to second.
- 31:05Roger Maez.
- 31:07So it's a wild pitch by run barn.
- 31:12The count is now three and two on Orlando Sepeda.
- 31:18And Peewee Jose Santiago is working on the Red Sox bullpen.
- 31:26Well hey, we saw run barn pitch the first two games.
- 31:31Up for now, it doesn't look like the same fella.
- 31:34It doesn't.
- 31:35He's not sharp.
- 31:36So three and two pitch to Sepeda.
- 31:38And down to after the shots, that Pemper Sully, the long throw over to George Stock.
- 31:42And that's off to Sepeda and that's off to the Cardinals here.
- 31:45And the top half to Ferdinand.
- 31:47But they came up with two big runs and the score after two and a half innings of play.
- 31:51It's the Cardinals two and the Boston Red Sox nothing.
- 31:54This is Harry Carey with Peewee Reese.
- 31:56The Cardinals are out in front with the result of a triple by not one.
- 31:59They sit tight, what a nice and a wild pitch.
- 32:01Two to nothing as we go into the bottom of the third, Peewee.
- 32:04Nelson Hart, Bob Gibson's first pitch turn, low, ball one.
- 32:11The Red Sox will have to play catch up baseball now.
- 32:16Bob Gibson, the kick to pitch.
- 32:18Little lazy pop is he jamming with it.
- 32:20Sepeda down at first base in fair territory takes it.
- 32:23So it's one up and one down here in the bottom half to Ferdinand.
- 32:29Ron Bard, the pitcher.
- 32:35Gets a nice hand from the fans.
- 32:39Gibson, an overpowering pitcher.
- 32:43So many of them.
- 32:45Kings of the National League manager, Gene Mock told me that the manager of the Phillies.
- 32:49Ron Bard swings and misses, strike one.
- 32:55He just keeps fine.
- 32:56Here is the kick to pitch.
- 32:58Third ball, little outside.
- 33:00One ball and one strike.
- 33:02Harry, when you lost this fellow during the season, I thought you'd lost the pinning.
- 33:06Nelson Brow step right in and did a tremendous job, Peewee.
- 33:09Ron Bard tries a checky swing, goes around, one ball and two strikes on him.
- 33:14It's one away with the bottom half to third inning.
- 33:17Gibson has not given up a hit.
- 33:19The Cardinals have two runs on five hits from the bottom half to third inning.
- 33:22Here is the kick to pitch.
- 33:24Now fastball and then a tanny.
- 33:25Ron Bard, top looking, and that is the third strikeout, fourth strikeout.
- 33:33For Bob Gibson, it's two away.
- 33:35Brings up Joe Ford.
- 33:37He walked his first time up.
- 33:42The big third baseman for the Red Sox.
- 33:43Gibson in the windup, the kick.
- 33:45Third ball in there, strike one.
- 33:49And there's no use taking against this fellow.
- 33:53He's always around that plate.
- 33:57Now the curveball just missed.
- 33:59Sat on curveball, outside.
- 34:01One ball and one strike.
- 34:02It's two away.
- 34:08The kick by Gibson.
- 34:10Fastball just got that outside corner.
- 34:12One ball and two strikes.
- 34:13Well, Harry, are you satisfied now?
- 34:16Here comes the fire department.
- 34:17Boy, yeah.
- 34:20I bet it, it might be a little late.
- 34:24The one and two pitch to Foy.
- 34:26Just barely got a piece of his balance straight back.
- 34:29If I were out in center field in those bases, I may be a little concerned right now.
- 34:37One ball, two strikes on Foy.
- 34:39It's two away.
- 34:40You have a lot of friends out there.
- 34:42They heard your remark and they began to wave.
- 34:44So there are a lot of train sister radios out there.
- 34:48And that's off of the Red Sox here in the bottom half, the third inning.
- 34:56So the score after three full innings, the Cardinals two, and the Boston Red Sox nothing.
- 35:02Half the fourth inning.
- 35:04The Cardinals two runs on five hits.
- 35:06And Harry, I must say, those three innings went pretty fast.
- 35:11It's your turn.
- 35:12Come on in here.
- 35:13Harry Kay.
- 35:14Thank you, Pee-wee.
- 35:15Tim McCarver will lead it off.
- 35:16Popped up his first down up.
- 35:18He's two out of 20 in the series.
- 35:20Cardinals leading two to nothing.
- 35:22Brown Borg first pitches a curve ball low.
- 35:24Brown Borg working with two days rest.
- 35:28Not as sharp as he was in his first two starts.
- 35:32And that's understandable.
- 35:35This boy has had a tremendous series regardless of how this game comes out.
- 35:40Just as he's had a great season.
- 35:42The pitch to McCarver, and it's a little bit outside at the knees.
- 35:46Two balls, no strikes.
- 35:48McCarver, nothing out of seven against the pitching of Jim Lomborg.
- 35:54Bob Gibson has panned five men in the first three innings.
- 35:59Gibson shooting for his fifth straight World Series victory.
- 36:04Here's the pitch.
- 36:06A fastball in there at the letters to strike his score.
- 36:09They're at Southwood four, a third base, Petrocelli at shortstop,
- 36:13Andrews at second, and Scott at first.
- 36:15Behind the plate is Elston Howard.
- 36:17Lomborg the pitcher.
- 36:19Yastrumsky in left, Smith in center, and Harrelson in right.
- 36:23Two balls and a strike to pitch on the way.
- 36:25Fastball, swung and missed, and he lost his plastic helmet on that one.
- 36:30And the count is even two and two.
- 36:33The Cardinal hitters think they've been chasing a lot of bad balls against Lomborg.
- 36:38And there was an example of it.
- 36:40Two balls, two strikes.
- 36:43Nobody on, nobody out.
- 36:45Top of the fourth.
- 36:46Cardinal's out in front, two to nothing.
- 36:48Here's the pitch.
- 36:50Curveball low and inside.
- 36:53McCarver had a notion, started to swing, stopped, and then got out of the way.
- 36:57The count is four, three balls, two strikes, and the fire has been put out in that building across the way.
- 37:05Three balls, two strikes.
- 37:08McCarver left-handed down to the pitch.
- 37:11He bounces one foul off his foot and then fair down to Scott.
- 37:15So he's still alive, although he's hobbling around a little bit.
- 37:20That one hit him right off the instep.
- 37:22McCarver picks up the rosin bag, dries off his hands, and returns to the play.
- 37:28McCarver in the 1964 World Series against the Yankees was a sensation.
- 37:33He hit.478 or something like that.
- 37:36In this series, the Red Sox have stopped him.
- 37:39.478 was right.
- 37:42Now the signal.
- 37:44Three-two pitch. Here it is.
- 37:46Ground ball to the second baseman. That should be easy.
- 37:48Andrews has it. Over to Scott for the up.
- 37:51McCarver rolls for Mike Andrews.
- 37:55And that'll bring up Mike Shannon.
- 37:57He fanned his first time up.
- 37:59He's nothing out of seven against Longborg.
- 38:04That fire that we referred to was in a railroad car on a siding across the way.
- 38:09I'm happy to report that it's been extinguished.
- 38:13The pitch to Shannon.
- 38:15Pass ball in there, strike his car.
- 38:17One strike and no ball.
- 38:19Longborg actually looks sharper here in this fourth inning than he did earlier in the game.
- 38:27Seems to find a real good cross ball is again.
- 38:29Here's the pitch.
- 38:30And it's inside, forcing Shannon back.
- 38:33The count is even and a ball and a strike.
- 38:36The Cardinals two runs, five hits, no errors so far.
- 38:39And the Red Sox nothing across.
- 38:42One man out, nobody on base, top of the fourth.
- 38:45Two to nothing in favor of St. Louis.
- 38:47Here's the pitch to Shannon.
- 38:49Curve ball fouled back and out of play.
- 38:52Mike Shannon homered earlier in this series.
- 38:58He hit a homer in the 1964 World Series against Whitey Ford.
- 39:06Three, two strikes and a ball.
- 39:09One out, we're in the fourth inning of the pitch.
- 39:12Bouncing ball to Foy.
- 39:14He's got it.
- 39:15Here's the peg.
- 39:16In time.
- 39:17So Foy throws out Shannon.
- 39:19Two up, two down.
- 39:21And that will bring up Javier, who's single this first time at bat, was out trying to steal.
- 39:27The first Cardinal thrown out stealing, in fact, is the first Cardinal to try to steal,
- 39:31with the exception of Lou Brock, who's had four stolen bases.
- 39:38Javier, having himself a great series, he's two out of seven against Lombard.
- 39:42He ruined Lombard's no hitter in the second game of the series here at Fenway Park.
- 39:48Down the pitch, and who he lines one foul, and Joe Schultz, preferred base coach,
- 39:54hit the duck to get out of the way of that one.
- 39:57And now kind of loosens and vertebrae a little bit as he does a little dance.
- 40:07Javier, no matter.
- 40:11There are two men out.
- 40:14Nobody on base, two to nothing in favor of the card.
- 40:19Air ball, strike call.
- 40:22The scoreboard says one and one, but that's got to be a mistake.
- 40:25He fouled off the first pitch and just took the second one for a curved strike.
- 40:32Now they're correcting it.
- 40:35Javier, the bat.
- 40:38Jim Lombard getting ready for a pitch.
- 40:42Three call, the fastball.
- 40:45There's Lombard's second strike out, and the Cardinals go down an order,
- 40:48one, two, three, and a four.
- 40:51And at the end of three and a half innings, the score remains single as two,
- 40:54lost to nothing.
- 40:58They go into the battle of the fourth.
- 41:01The skies have been overcast, but the sun, for the first time, heats from behind the cloud.
- 41:09And here's Mike Andrews to lead it off the first pitch.
- 41:12He didn't mean to swing, half swing, and he fouls it off to the right.
- 41:16Bobby Dore recovers it.
- 41:18Bobby fumbled that one.
- 41:20When he was the second baseman for the Red Sox, he rarely fumbled the ground ball.
- 41:25He had an errorless record, as I recall, later broken.
- 41:31Bob Gibson, Thompson fires.
- 41:33There's the strike call.
- 41:34Andrews short enough as if to bump.
- 41:37Mike Andrews sacrificed his first time at bat.
- 41:40He's had a good series, hitting 400 with four out of ten.
- 41:44Leading off here on the fourth, two to nothing in favor of St. Louis.
- 41:49Here's the pitch, curveball low.
- 41:53Gibson mixing his pitches more this afternoon than he has previously.
- 42:02Mike Andrews, right-handed batter, chokes up a little bit.
- 42:06Fouls back and out of play.
- 42:09He got around late on a high fastball.
- 42:11The decisive game of the World Series.
- 42:14Whoever wins this one wins the booty, as it were.
- 42:18The winner shares.
- 42:20There's no tomorrow. This is it.
- 42:22Mike Andrews waiting.
- 42:26Two strikes and a ball.
- 42:28And Gibson's fifth.
- 42:30A tap.
- 42:31Foul down the third baseline.
- 42:34The carver pounces on it, but there's no reason to.
- 42:39And so comes back to the play.
- 42:41Shannon playing straightaway third base.
- 42:45Andrews is played straightaway in the outfield.
- 42:49Bob Gibson, who has fanned five in three innings, gets ready.
- 42:53Two strikes and a ball.
- 42:55Yes, Trensky will be next to the pitch.
- 42:58He struck him out, called.
- 43:00Andrews is called out on strike.
- 43:02Strikeout number six for Bob Gibson.
- 43:05And here's Carl Yastremski.
- 43:11Gibson already has fanned as many in this game and won the fourth inning as he did in all of his shutout victories in his second game.
- 43:21His second victory.
- 43:23There's a pitch to Yastremski.
- 43:26And it's a breaking ball low and inside.
- 43:29Yastremski popped up to the shortstop Maxville his first down to bat.
- 43:35He's had two out of nine against the pitching of Bob Gibson.
- 43:39Carl Yastremski, the pitch to him.
- 43:43Last ball he started the swing held up and it was high for ball two.
- 43:50Yastremski hitting four oh nine in the series.
- 43:54He's had nine hits for 20 total bases.
- 43:58The most total bases of anybody in the series.
- 44:03Now the signal.
- 44:04Here's the windup and the pitch.
- 44:07That ball in there is like his car.
- 44:09We've talked about how hard Yastremski swings about.
- 44:13I'm sure that's common knowledge now and it's significant that in seven games as hard as he swings he's only struck out once.
- 44:22Now the windup.
- 44:23Here's the pitch.
- 44:25Bouncing ball to Javier.
- 44:26Big Hoppy's got it.
- 44:28Puts over the first in time.
- 44:30Yastremski bounces out from Javier to the play.
- 44:33Two out.
- 44:34Only one man has reached base and none on a walk to lead our fans.
- 44:37Joe Ford.
- 44:41Ken Howson.
- 44:44Was out on strike his first time up.
- 44:49Gibson is fans sixth with me.
- 44:51Bottom of the fourth.
- 44:52Here's the pitch.
- 44:53Swung and fouled back he had a good cut on a high fast ball.
- 44:57One strike and no ball.
- 44:59Ken Howson.
- 45:02Charlie Finley's gift to the Boston Red Sox.
- 45:06And to Howson as a matter of fact.
- 45:10Now the windup for the pitch.
- 45:13He swings and misses.
- 45:15Strike two.
- 45:17And Howson is in the hole.
- 45:18Two strikes and nothing.
- 45:20Gibson keeps pouring smoke.
- 45:24I'm not referring now to that fire which has been extinguished.
- 45:28We're in the bottom of the fourth.
- 45:30Two to nothing in favor of the Cardinals.
- 45:32Red Birds have had five hits.
- 45:34Red Sox haven't had any yet.
- 45:37They've got only one baserunner and he was stranded in the first inning.
- 45:40The leadoff man, Joe Ford, walked and he sacrificed in the second.
- 45:45But Yastremski popped up and Howson's sand.
- 45:47Here's the pitch. Swung and fouled back.
- 45:51Two strikes and nothing. Two out.
- 45:53Bottom of the fourth. St. Louis leading.
- 45:55Two to nothing.
- 45:57Tim McCarver goes out to talk to Bob Gibson.
- 46:01Gibson has pitched four complete game victories in a row in the World Series.
- 46:07The first time he pitched in the series in 1964.
- 46:10The first game he was beaten.
- 46:15He pitched a decisive seventh game that year in winter.
- 46:19Had a string of fourth straight World Series victories.
- 46:24Here's the pitch. Curveball. Barely missed. Outside.
- 46:27Two strikes and a ball. Ken Howson.
- 46:31He's had one out of nine in this series.
- 46:34Facing Gibson for the first time in this game.
- 46:38He was out on strikes in the first inning.
- 46:41Two strikes and a ball. Two out. Nobody on the pitch.
- 46:44He struck him out swinging.
- 46:47Seven strikeouts. One, two, three. Go to red dot.
- 46:51In the fourth and at the end of the fourth full inning.
- 46:55The score remains St. Louis two. Boston nothing.
- 47:01Val Macfield leads it off here on the top of the fifth for St. Louis.
- 47:05Quickly first time up. The first pitch still in his house.
- 47:08He scored the first run.
- 47:11He'll wind up the pitch by Lomborg. And it's a fastball a little bit low.
- 47:14Ball two. Two balls, no strikes.
- 47:17Lomborg is sand two.
- 47:20He hasn't walked anybody.
- 47:24He's allowed five hits and two runs.
- 47:32Here's the pitch. Swung on. A bouncing ball to Foy.
- 47:35He's got it. Lot of time. Throws perfectly.
- 47:38Macfield bounces to Foy who throws him out.
- 47:41Not a big a Bob Gibson who's retired on a line drive at the third baseman.
- 47:47Joe Foy in the third inning.
- 47:50You know after Macfield let off of the triple off the center field wall.
- 47:53Gibson lined up Foy and Brant topped up.
- 47:56And it looked like Lomborg might still pick his way out of the inning.
- 47:59But then Foy contributed a vital singular center.
- 48:02Here's the pitch to Gibson. Long when he fouled it back.
- 48:05The Boston fans giving Bob Gibson a fine hand as he stepped up to the plate.
- 48:17Here's the pitch. And it's low and inside.
- 48:22As the St. Louis fans gave Jim Lomborg in St. Louis.
- 48:28One ball, one strike. One out and nobody on.
- 48:31Two to nothing in favor of the Cubs.
- 48:33We're in the fifth. The pitch by Lomborg.
- 48:37Picked his call.
- 48:39Boy he looks much sharper these last two innings than he did at the beginning of the game.
- 48:46Bright sunshine is bathing Sunway Park at the moment.
- 48:52The pitch. One more.
- 48:54The long drive. Deep left center. Way back.
- 48:56It might be out of here. It could be.
- 48:59And it is a home run for Bob Gibson.
- 49:04And boy that was at the 379 foot mark up against the bodily of Cameron that was placed up there.
- 49:12Bob Gibson joins the list of pitchers who have hit home runs in World Series competition.
- 49:19And the score is now three to nothing.
- 49:23He hit that ball a long, long way.
- 49:27And the second base on fire, Frank Uman hustling out as far as he could to make sure he saw where it hit.
- 49:34Indicated that it was a home run.
- 49:37Although the ball bounced back to the field.
- 49:39Here's Brock bouncing foul down to Dick Sissler coaching a first base.
- 49:44Bob Gibson has helped his own cause with a long home run.
- 49:49Beyond the 379 mark in the extreme center field corner.
- 49:56Little Brock, nothing out of two. Here's the pitch by Larnboy.
- 50:00Thinking fastball low and outside.
- 50:02The count is even and a ball and a strike.
- 50:05Brock has had ten out of twenty-seven now in the series.
- 50:10Including nothing out of ten against Larnboy.
- 50:14Here's the pitch. He swings and he misses.
- 50:18Now the way it looks is 27, take out ten. He's ten out of seventeen against the other pitchers.
- 50:26But for Larnboy, he would have a phenomenal batting average.
- 50:33One run is in on a home run by Gibson. One out, the Cardinals are out in front three.
- 50:37Larnboy's pitch.
- 50:40And Brock takes it high. Ball two. Two balls, two strikes.
- 50:45One out and one in.
- 50:51Bob Gibson's first World Series home run.
- 50:55Not a sign.
- 50:58Brock waiting. Here's the pitch.
- 51:01There's a line shot in the left field and Brock's in there for a base hit.
- 51:04So Brock has his first hit.
- 51:07Yostemsky fumbles the ball just a moment but Brock doesn't try to advance.
- 51:11Brock has had his first hit against Jim Larnboy on his 11th time at bat.
- 51:17That'll bring up Kirk Flood, who may have gotten the most important hit of the game.
- 51:23When with two out and the runner at third, he lined his singular center to put the Cardinals out in front.
- 51:29Now a little huddle around the mound.
- 51:33Jose Santiago, who mounted you Dick Williams said would be his first pitcher up on the bullpen.
- 51:39He's throwing out there.
- 51:41George Scott and Elston Howard talking to Jim Larnboy.
- 51:47More a delay tactic to enable Santiago to get ready out there.
- 51:56Now Brock has stolen four bases.
- 52:00He's a first base with one out and Flood is a hitter.
- 52:05He takes a long lead.
- 52:07Larnboy throws over there but Brock is back.
- 52:11Brock leads with four stolen bases.
- 52:19Long lead, no catch.
- 52:21Oh, that goes behind Kirk Flood.
- 52:23And he winds up spinning around on these bats to the opposite side of the plate.
- 52:29During his entire national career, Bob Gibson hit 12 home runs in regular season play.
- 52:35Today he got his first in World Series competition.
- 52:39Brock a lead, Larnboy getting ready.
- 52:43The hesitation of the bell goes Brock.
- 52:45The pitch, Howard drops it.
- 52:47And Brock has stolen his fifth base.
- 52:53Little Brock steals second.
- 52:55Howard is so anxious to get the ball away, he drops it.
- 52:58Brock had a great jump off first base.
- 53:01I doubt if Howard could have thrown him out.
- 53:04Brock now has 11 hits in the series.
- 53:10Leading everybody.
- 53:12So Kirk Flood has a chance of driving it around.
- 53:15Cardinal's out in front, three to nothing.
- 53:22There's a stretch by Larnboy.
- 53:24And a fifth.
- 53:26It's a curve ball in there for a strike call.
- 53:29Two balls and a strike on Flood.
- 53:31With one out of two in this game, one out of nine against Larnboy.
- 53:37He's had five hits in this series, which is in his seventh and final game.
- 53:43Brock a short lead at second base for fifth.
- 53:46High inside curve ball.
- 53:48Ball three.
- 53:51Jose Santiago is out on the bullpen and throwing hard out there.
- 53:56Three balls, one strike on Kirk Flood.
- 53:59Brock, who rarely tries to steal first.
- 54:05Still 52 bases during the regular season.
- 54:08Still in five in this series.
- 54:10There he goes trying to steal.
- 54:12And he's going to make it.
- 54:13Wait a minute.
- 54:14He's going to make it, all right.
- 54:16Flood started a swing and then stopped.
- 54:18The ball got away from Howard.
- 54:19I thought perhaps he might have foul-kicked it.
- 54:21But he didn't.
- 54:22Ball four and Brock steals third.
- 54:27See, I told you he rarely tries to steal third base.
- 54:29I heard that, Harry.
- 54:31But he had a big jump.
- 54:33And he went.
- 54:35And Flood took ball four.
- 54:37And Roger Maritz comes up with runners at first and third and only one out.
- 54:41And the Cardinals in the spot now to really break it open.
- 54:44There's only one man out.
- 54:46The infield playing halfway around short and second.
- 54:49Brock's at third.
- 54:50Flood's at first.
- 54:51A lot of speed.
- 54:53Score three down at East St. Louis.
- 54:55The pitch to Roger Maritz.
- 54:57Pass ball low and away.
- 54:59One ball, no strike.
- 55:00Maritz has ten hits in this series.
- 55:03Ten out of 25, which is a 400 batting average.
- 55:07Without too much publicity, he has done a fine job in this series.
- 55:13Runners at first and third.
- 55:16One out.
- 55:18Here's Landborg's pitch.
- 55:20Curve ball in the second call.
- 55:23That evens out of the ball and a strike.
- 55:25The infield in at first and third, halfway at short and second.
- 55:31When they sharply hit ground ball, they'll try for the double play.
- 55:36Three to nothing, St. Louis.
- 55:38The stretch.
- 55:39Here's the pitch.
- 55:41Way outside.
- 55:43Ball two.
- 55:44Two balls and a strike.
- 55:46We're in the top of the fifth inning.
- 55:48The Cardinals have three runs, seven hits.
- 55:51The Red Sox haven't had a hit and naturally no run.
- 55:58Low block is tied to World Series record for stolen bases.
- 56:02Here's the stretch.
- 56:03Here's the pitch.
- 56:05Strike ball.
- 56:07Hit that outside corner.
- 56:10And listen who we tied.
- 56:12Jim Slagle of the Cubs who stole six and five games in 1907.
- 56:17And Hannes Wagner of the Parrots who stole six and seven games in 1909.
- 56:24Roger Mares with a count of two balls, two strikes.
- 56:27Landborg's pitch.
- 56:29Outside, ball three.
- 56:32The crowd's very quiet here at Fenway Park.
- 56:35You can almost hear a pin drop.
- 56:38As in this decisive game, the miracle of Fenway Park has not yet happened.
- 56:46It's a long way to go in these Red Sox.
- 56:48You know the fabulous year they've had.
- 56:53Now the stretch.
- 56:56Here's the three-two pitch that goes flat.
- 56:58Swung on line drive in the right field.
- 57:00Harrelson's going to catch it.
- 57:01He does.
- 57:02Here's Black tagging up.
- 57:03Here's a throw to the plate.
- 57:04He scores.
- 57:06And Mares has driven in his seventh run of the series.
- 57:10He leads both teams and RBI.
- 57:13A sacrifice fly by Roger Mares makes the score now four to nothing.
- 57:18Two out.
- 57:19Floyd who is starting on that three-two pitch had a comeback the first base.
- 57:26So Cepeda steps up with a runner first.
- 57:30Ross now has scored eight runs.
- 57:33He leads both teams in that department.
- 57:35He's had 11 hits.
- 57:36He leads in that department.
- 57:38He has stolen six bases.
- 57:39He leads in that category.
- 57:41And here's Orlando's fifth.
- 57:43A throw with the first to runner back.
- 57:46Forward and up.
- 57:47They can save it to Cardinals in the top of the fifth.
- 57:53Now the stretch.
- 57:57By land Borgi throws over the first.
- 57:59The runner is back.
- 58:00I don't believe the Cardinals have ever lost a seven-game World Series.
- 58:07And this is their fifth.
- 58:13Now the stretch.
- 58:16Here's the pitch.
- 58:17Cepeda had a cut and he followed it back.
- 58:20Orlando is talking on the stuff.
- 58:22He's getting good cuts.
- 58:23He's getting good pitches.
- 58:29This is the Cardinals' 11th World Series and they're shooting for their eighth championship.
- 58:35Now the stretch.
- 58:38The pitch to Cepeda.
- 58:40Pass ball is low.
- 58:42And the count evens at a ball and a stretch.
- 58:45Forward and up it in the top of the fifth.
- 58:48Bob Gibson hasn't allowed a hit as yet.
- 58:51And a stand seven in the first four innings.
- 58:58Here's a lead by Flood.
- 59:01The pitch by land Borgi.
- 59:03Swung at a bad ball and he missed.
- 59:06Two strikes and a ball.
- 59:08Cepeda, who quite obviously now is pressing.
- 59:12The big man to the Cardinals all year long.
- 59:14He's been held to three hits and 26 times at bat in this series.
- 59:18And he's nothing out of nine against land Borgi.
- 59:21He was driven in just one run.
- 59:28Cepeda goes to the rousin back.
- 59:31Now returns to the play.
- 59:35The outfield plays in deep.
- 59:37Jim Longboy getting ready.
- 59:40Now the pitch.
- 59:42Here it is.
- 59:43Her ball is low.
- 59:45That evens it up a two balls, two strikes.
- 59:49Top of the fifth inning.
- 59:51A capacity crowd at Fenway Park.
- 59:56Almost an abnormal silence at the moment.
- 59:59You wouldn't think that 36,000 people or so could be so quiet.
- 1:00:05Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:00:08There's a throw there.
- 1:00:10The runner's back.
- 1:00:11Wow, they're whooping it up out there in the bleachers.
- 1:00:17Wow, these are great fans out there.
- 1:00:20Here's the stretch.
- 1:00:22Two-two pitch.
- 1:00:23Here it is.
- 1:00:26Foul ball on the third base line.
- 1:00:29Boy guarding the line closely was over there to make the play, but it was a foul ball.
- 1:00:36Cepeda busted his down on that one.
- 1:00:41Gets a new war club up there.
- 1:00:43Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:00:46Cepeda to hit her.
- 1:00:49Kirk was on first base.
- 1:00:53Top of the fifth inning.
- 1:00:55Four to nothing, St. Louis.
- 1:00:57Here's the stretch.
- 1:00:59The pitch.
- 1:01:00Inside a fastball three.
- 1:01:04Three balls, two strikes.
- 1:01:06Full count on Orlando Cepeda.
- 1:01:08Kirk Flood will be going with the pitch again.
- 1:01:12There's two men out and two runs are in.
- 1:01:16The first on a home run by Bob Gibson.
- 1:01:22Here's the stretch to three-two pitch.
- 1:01:25There goes Flood.
- 1:01:26Howled back to the screen.
- 1:01:29And the count remains the same.
- 1:01:31You know, everybody talking all through the series about the spectacular efforts of
- 1:01:38Klaue Jostrowski of the Red Sox and Lou Brock of the Cardinals.
- 1:01:45Bob Gibson might slip through to be the standout performer in the series.
- 1:01:50Taking nothing away from the other two men.
- 1:01:53Here's the stretch three-two pitch.
- 1:01:57There goes the runner.
- 1:01:58Swung on.
- 1:01:59A long drive but foul.
- 1:02:01Out onto the street here.
- 1:02:03Jostrowski has been sensational not only all year long, but throughout the series.
- 1:02:10Lou Brock for the Cardinals has sparkled.
- 1:02:13Bob Gibson is alive.
- 1:02:15The Red Sox one-run.
- 1:02:17And that's by Jose Santiago.
- 1:02:23But this game isn't over yet.
- 1:02:25Much can happen.
- 1:02:26Here's the stretch for pitch.
- 1:02:28There goes the runner.
- 1:02:29Swung on.
- 1:02:30High pop-fly.
- 1:02:31Short left field.
- 1:02:33Jostrowski under the ball.
- 1:02:34And he's got it for retire the side.
- 1:02:37Supporter fly for Jostrowski.
- 1:02:39So it's two runs, two hits, no errors in one left.
- 1:02:45And at the end of the four and a half innings here in Boston, the score, St. Louis four, Boston nothing.
- 1:02:54About a half to fifth innings of lights have been turned on here at Fenway Park.
- 1:02:58George Scott will be the first here for the Red Sox.
- 1:03:01And the Cardinals lead by a score of four to nothing to tell you all about it, Harry Carrey.
- 1:03:05All right, here's George Scott to read it off.
- 1:03:10Time is called as the umpires find a something on Ford going on in the right field corner.
- 1:03:21But now we're ready to go.
- 1:03:22George Scott's playing his first time up the pitch.
- 1:03:25It's a little bit low on outside.
- 1:03:27Gibson, Ozonar, they hit you.
- 1:03:29Now the fervor of the crowd can be heard as they begin to cheer the Red Sox on.
- 1:03:35Here's the pitch.
- 1:03:36There's a long drive, he's going to be a way back.
- 1:03:4012-year-old McGann and Munchy up against the wall.
- 1:03:42Scott's around first.
- 1:03:43On his way to second.
- 1:03:44Now he's around second on his way to third.
- 1:03:47And he makes him standing up.
- 1:03:49Here's a ball getting away.
- 1:03:51Goes into the Cardinals' red box and Scott will score.
- 1:03:55Now he's in the end and trying to get through the play.
- 1:03:57And the ball's shipped into the Cardinals' red box and the Red Sox have scored.
- 1:04:25Solid save, 4-1 ball game.
- 1:04:28And here's Ledgie Smith.
- 1:04:29Left-handed out of the pitch, one on.
- 1:04:31High drive ball, right field.
- 1:04:33Rod Jimenez coming in under the ball.
- 1:04:36He's got it.
- 1:04:40George Scott got the first hit off Bob Gibson.
- 1:04:43A long drive just above the 420 mark in center field.
- 1:04:47First blood had trouble picking the ball up.
- 1:04:50Scott advanced to third base standing up.
- 1:04:53The flow, I don't know whether Harvey, I think Harvey or through the ball,
- 1:04:57we'll have to check it.
- 1:04:59Here's Pepsosulli and the curve ball is outside.
- 1:05:02The flow in the third base.
- 1:05:04Shannon trying to get through the ball, stumbled over Scott,
- 1:05:07fell down and the ball's shipped into the Cardinal dugout.
- 1:05:10Scott's scoring.
- 1:05:12Here's a good flow with Pepsosulli.
- 1:05:16The job has now come to life.
- 1:05:20It's a 4-1 ball game.
- 1:05:23Pepsosulli waiting the pitch.
- 1:05:26It's a strike call.
- 1:05:28Two balls and a strike.
- 1:05:31That was Scott's fourth hit off Gibson and nine times a bat in a series.
- 1:05:36Now to wind up, here's the delivery.
- 1:05:38Brings and misses, strike two.
- 1:05:41Pepsosulli has bowed it seven times against Gibson.
- 1:05:47He's got to stand five times against him.
- 1:05:52Orman threats he can hit that long ball as he proved yesterday to put Pepsosulli.
- 1:06:00And the count, two balls, two strikes.
- 1:06:03It was Javier's idea.
- 1:06:05Yes, I was watching him play a third base.
- 1:06:07I conjectured it was Javier that threw the ball towards third.
- 1:06:11He'll get the air on the throw.
- 1:06:16Two balls, two strikes on Pepsosulli.
- 1:06:19Here's the pitch.
- 1:06:21He struck him out swinging.
- 1:06:23That's the second time in a row in this game that Pepsosulli has fanned.
- 1:06:27And that is the eighth strikeout for Bob Gibson.
- 1:06:31Here's Elston Howard.
- 1:06:40As I mentioned, Scott, here's the pitch.
- 1:06:42Howard swings a high pop by high shot left field.
- 1:06:45Brock coming in, calling for the ball.
- 1:06:48He has it.
- 1:06:49So Howard on the first pitch flies to Brock.
- 1:06:52One run, one hit, one air, nobody left for the Red Sox in the fifth.
- 1:06:57And at the end of five full innings, it's the Cardinals four, the Red Sox one.
- 1:07:04We pause 30 seconds for station identification.
- 1:07:08This is WMAQ AM and FM, radio home of the Floyd Brown Show, Chicago.
- 1:07:14Are you going to the top half of sixth inning?
- 1:07:19The Cardinals have four runs, seven hits, they've made one air.
- 1:07:23The Red Sox have one run on one hit, they have made no air.
- 1:07:26Gibson all the way and Lombard all the way.
- 1:07:29The first hitter, it'll be Tim McCarver for the Cardinals as they go in the top half of sixth inning.
- 1:07:35Harry?
- 1:07:36All right, Pee-wee, four to one.
- 1:07:39The Red Sox have picked up one of those runs.
- 1:07:42Here is McCarver, nothing out of two in this game.
- 1:07:46Pop the short, roll the second, the pitch, in there, a slider, a strike call.
- 1:07:52McCarver is nothing out of eight against the pitching of Jim Lombard.
- 1:07:56The Cardinals have had seven hits, the Red Sox one.
- 1:08:01One strike on Tim McCarver.
- 1:08:05Just as Lombard gets ready, McCarver steps out of the batter's box.
- 1:08:11Four to one, we're in the top of the sixth, stainless leads.
- 1:08:13Here's the pitch.
- 1:08:15There's the line drive and the right field, Harrelson coming in.
- 1:08:18He's eyes for the bar.
- 1:08:19He drops it down, there goes McCarver on his way to second.
- 1:08:23A great try by Ken Harrelson and the right field line umpire, Paul Pryor, was right on top of the play.
- 1:08:29He was ready to indicate that McCarver was out, that Harrelson had caught the ball fairly when he saw it pop out of his glove.
- 1:08:37What I think is he hit the ground, the jar, loosened the ball from his mitt.
- 1:08:43A fine try by Ken Harrelson, it winds up a double for Tim McCarver.
- 1:08:49He's first hit off Lombard.
- 1:08:52So the Cardinals have their leadoff man at second base here in the top of the sixth.
- 1:08:57St. Louis four, Red Sox one.
- 1:09:00Mike Shannon, who's nothing out of eight against Lombard, for the series.
- 1:09:05He's a man and bounced out in this game.
- 1:09:08Right-handed hitter.
- 1:09:10We're in the sixth.
- 1:09:12The stretch by Lombard, the glance back.
- 1:09:15And the pitch.
- 1:09:17Curveball is high and inside.
- 1:09:21Dan Osinski, a right-hander, and Ken Brett, a left-hander, are busy in the Red Sox bullpen.
- 1:09:29Shannon, hitting out of a wide straddle.
- 1:09:32The Cardinals have had eight hits in this game.
- 1:09:36McCarver lead.
- 1:09:39Lombard takes a look at him.
- 1:09:41Here's the pitch.
- 1:09:43Curveball, oh, great stop by Foy.
- 1:09:45Picks the ball up, can't make a play.
- 1:09:48A vicious smash at Joe Foy, who knocked the ball down, but couldn't make a play.
- 1:09:56They're going to call it an air.
- 1:10:00An air charge to Foy.
- 1:10:02It's not a base hit.
- 1:10:04And the Cardinals have runners at first and second.
- 1:10:08And here comes manager Dick Williams of the Boston Red Sox.
- 1:10:13Jim Lombard.
- 1:10:16You have to admire not only this boy's ability, but his courage.
- 1:10:24With very sharp rest.
- 1:10:28He hasn't had his stuff here today. It's been quite obvious.
- 1:10:32He's going to stay in this ballgame.
- 1:10:37The Cardinals, in 18 innings previously in this World Series against Lombard,
- 1:10:41had a total of only four hits.
- 1:10:44Today they've had eight.
- 1:10:48We're in the sixth inning.
- 1:10:50Runners at first and second, how near will be the batter?
- 1:10:54The ball Shannon hit was hit hard, and Foy knocked it down.
- 1:11:04But it was an air, and those runners at first and second, nobody up.
- 1:11:08Javier, who's had one out of two in this game.
- 1:11:14Right-handed batter waits. Lombard getting ready.
- 1:11:17The pitch.
- 1:11:19Swings and he fouls it back.
- 1:11:21Javier was trying to go to the opposite field that time.
- 1:11:27Down Knoxville would be next, followed by Bob Gibson.
- 1:11:33Runners at first and second, the decisive game of the World Series,
- 1:11:36finds St. Louis leading Boston 4-1.
- 1:11:41The Cardinals perched at first and second.
- 1:11:43Shannon at first. McClark at second.
- 1:11:48Javier on board, gets ready.
- 1:11:53Hesitates to belt and pitches to Javier.
- 1:11:57He swings and misses a curve ball.
- 1:12:04And Javier is in the hole, two strikes and nothing.
- 1:12:09The Cardinals have gotten away to an early lead,
- 1:12:12but these Boston Red Sox have made believers of everybody
- 1:12:15but the way they have fought back so many times,
- 1:12:21this unforgettable season, certainly the most unforgettable
- 1:12:24in the history of the Boston Ball Club.
- 1:12:32You know, the Cardinals drew over two million people
- 1:12:34at their ballpark this year, and the Red Sox,
- 1:12:36in a much smaller ballpark, drew something like a million seven hundred thousand.
- 1:12:41That's how much interest they created.
- 1:12:43Here it is. He held up on a curve ball, almost chased it.
- 1:12:48Two strikes and the ball.
- 1:12:52We're in the sixth. Cardinal runners at first and second, nobody out.
- 1:12:58Javier, who's had eight hits in this series,
- 1:13:03has distinguished himself both at bat and in the field, as a matter of fact.
- 1:13:10One ball, two strikes. Lombard leaning forward.
- 1:13:15McCarver a safe lead at second.
- 1:13:18Shannon a shot when at first, Scott is not holding them on.
- 1:13:24Lombard at the belt, the pitch.
- 1:13:28There's a long drive way back. It might be out of here.
- 1:13:32It could be. It is a home run.
- 1:13:37Javier hits one off the screen in left field, and the Cardinals now lead seven to one.
- 1:13:44Javier homers.
- 1:13:49A high towering drive that hit the screen atop the Green Monster.
- 1:13:55And there's Javier's ninth hit in this series.
- 1:14:01That brings up Don Osville.
- 1:14:06Cooley now has driven in four runs for the series.
- 1:14:09Here's the pitch to Maxville, and it's a fastball low.
- 1:14:13The Cardinals, with two in the third, two in the fifth, and now three in the sixth, have a seven to one lead.
- 1:14:24Here's the pitch, and it's in there a fastball, a strike call.
- 1:14:34That's Javier's first World Series home run.
- 1:14:38Now the pitch, slung and foul tipped.
- 1:14:41In the 1964 World Series, Javier was injured, played only a game or so, and Don Osville played second base most of the series.
- 1:14:53Played only one game, and that is a pinch runner.
- 1:14:56Here's the pitch, slung and foul tipped.
- 1:15:01Seven to one in favor of the Cardinals.
- 1:15:05Don Maxville, who started with a triple in the third inning, scored the first run on Kirk Flood's single with two outs.
- 1:15:13Now to wind up the pitch, behind him, and the count is evened up.
- 1:15:20Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:15:23Jim Rambord, seven runs on nine hits.
- 1:15:28Each team has made an error.
- 1:15:31Out of pitch, fly ball right field.
- 1:15:34Harrelson going over, under the ball, makes the kill.
- 1:15:38Maxville fly to Harrelson right center.
- 1:15:41That's one away, and brings up the pitcher Bob Gibson, who homered in the fifth.
- 1:15:47Line hard to play in the third.
- 1:15:51He's getting a nice hand from the Boston fans.
- 1:16:04Rambord's pitch, here it is, and there's a curveball in the first strike call.
- 1:16:10Gibson pitching his third game in the series, as is Rambord.
- 1:16:17Each man went into this game having allowed one run.
- 1:16:20Strike call, the fastball.
- 1:16:26Gibson has won by scores of two to one and six to nothing.
- 1:16:29The series, Rambord, by scores of five to nothing and three to one.
- 1:16:34Now to pitch, curveball a little bit low.
- 1:16:36One ball, two strikes.
- 1:16:38Three runs are in.
- 1:16:40St. Louis leading seven to one.
- 1:16:43The Cardinals who never have lost a seven-game World Series.
- 1:16:49Here's the pitch.
- 1:16:50Swung a bouncing ball to Foy.
- 1:16:52He's got it.
- 1:16:53Over to first base.
- 1:16:55He's out.
- 1:16:56Foy throws out Gibson.
- 1:17:00That will bring up Lou Brock.
- 1:17:03Brock got his first hit of the series against Rambord in the fifth.
- 1:17:07Stole two bases and has now swiped six in the series.
- 1:17:18Brock has had 11 hits.
- 1:17:28Rambord throws the ball in to Elston Howard.
- 1:17:31Claymumpire John Stevens looks it over.
- 1:17:33It's okay and they toss it back to him.
- 1:17:43Here's Rambord's pitch.
- 1:17:45Fastball sinks low and outside.
- 1:17:48One ball, no strikes.
- 1:17:50Three runs are in.
- 1:17:51Two men are out.
- 1:17:58Now the delivery.
- 1:17:59Swung a line drive down the left-fee line and it is a fair ball going into the corner.
- 1:18:04Brock's around first.
- 1:18:05He's on his way to second.
- 1:18:07Yastrinsky recovers the ball and fires it back towards the infield.
- 1:18:11Lou Brock gets his second hit of the game and 12th of the series, a double into the left-field corner.
- 1:18:19That brings up Kurt Flood.
- 1:18:28Flood has had one out of two, drove in a run.
- 1:18:32The hit he got in the third inning was the first hit he had had off Rambord in the whole series.
- 1:18:40It's a curve ball in the first strike call.
- 1:18:44Foy at third base, Petrocelli at short, Andrews at second.
- 1:18:48Scott at first.
- 1:18:50Howard the catcher, Lombard the pitcher.
- 1:18:55There's Brock, a lead off second base, and Lombard's pitch.
- 1:19:00Swung and he fouled tipped.
- 1:19:03And so Flood has a count of two strikes with two out, three runs in, and Brock at second base.
- 1:19:09We're in the top of the sixth.
- 1:19:14Lombard leans forward.
- 1:19:18Has his sign.
- 1:19:24Pitching deliberately, glances at second base.
- 1:19:28Now the pitch, and it's high on outside.
- 1:19:32One ball, two strikes on Kurt Flood.
- 1:19:39Joe Schultz coaching at third base for the Cardinals, Dick Sissler at first base.
- 1:19:48Mike Andrews holding Brock close.
- 1:19:52Here's the pitch.
- 1:19:53Curve ball outside.
- 1:19:55And the count evens two balls, two strikes.
- 1:20:07Flood waiting.
- 1:20:11Everything quiet here at the moment.
- 1:20:14Now the glance back at second base.
- 1:20:17The pitch.
- 1:20:18He struck him out swinging.
- 1:20:21Kurt Flood goes down swinging.
- 1:20:23It's three runs for the Cardinals.
- 1:20:26Three hits.
- 1:20:27One air and one left.
- 1:20:29So the Red Sox fans up on their feet cheering as we go down to the bottom half of the sixth at the score, St. Louis 7, Boston 1.
- 1:20:45Jose Tardibold comes in as a pinch hitter for Jim Lombard.
- 1:20:54Left-handed hitter.
- 1:20:56The score is some of the one in favor of St. Louis.
- 1:20:59Here's the windup and the pitch.
- 1:21:01Swung and he missed.
- 1:21:03Strike two.
- 1:21:05Jose Tardibold.
- 1:21:08Lombard.
- 1:21:11A fantastic pitcher in this series.
- 1:21:15And one wonders, here's a pitch and it's a curve ball on inside.
- 1:21:20With proper rest, if he'd had his normal three or four-day rest, how this game would have gone.
- 1:21:29Tardibold waiting.
- 1:21:30Two strikes and a ball.
- 1:21:31The pitch swung and he struck him out.
- 1:21:35Tardibold becomes the ninth strikeout victim.
- 1:21:39Here's Joe Floyd.
- 1:21:40He's a fan once and walk once.
- 1:21:43One out.
- 1:21:44A ball game at the bottom of the sixth.
- 1:21:46St. Louis out in front, 7 to 1.
- 1:21:53Bob Gibson delivers and it's a curve ball outside.
- 1:21:58Gibson is allowed two runs now in the series.
- 1:22:06Right-handed delivers, swung on, a high top foul, coming back.
- 1:22:10McCarver has a play under the ball.
- 1:22:12He takes it.
- 1:22:14So Floyd fouls to McCarver.
- 1:22:17Two men up, two men down.
- 1:22:19And here's Mike Andrews.
- 1:22:30Andrews' sacrifice in the first inning was out on strikes in the fourth.
- 1:22:35Two men are out.
- 1:22:37Gibson is allowed one hit, a triple by George Scott.
- 1:22:41Here's the pitch.
- 1:22:42There's a smash and one half to Knoxville.
- 1:22:45There's a throw over the first, end time.
- 1:22:47Andrews hit the ball hard but a one bounce right at Knoxville.
- 1:22:51So it's one, two, three, nothing across.
- 1:22:53And at the end of six innings, it's St. Louis 7, Boston 1.
- 1:23:02By going in the top half of the seventh inning, a new pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, Jose Santiago.
- 1:23:07Santa's Cardinals, seven runs on ten hits.
- 1:23:11They've made one error.
- 1:23:12The Boston Red Sox, one run on one hit.
- 1:23:15They've made one error.
- 1:23:16The first hitter for the Cardinals in the top half of the seventh inning, Roger Maris.
- 1:23:20Harry?
- 1:23:21Hi, Peewee.
- 1:23:22Maris left-handed batter.
- 1:23:24He's driven in a run today and had two singles, two out of two.
- 1:23:27Here's the pitch.
- 1:23:28Santiago's curve ball is swung on amidst.
- 1:23:31Santiago had won 12 and lost four during the season with an earned run average of 3.60.
- 1:23:38One strike, no ball.
- 1:23:42Here's the pitch.
- 1:23:44And it's a fastball in there for a strike and call.
- 1:23:47This is the third appearance for Santiago.
- 1:23:52His first in relief.
- 1:23:54He lost two as a starter.
- 1:23:56The pitch to Maris, swung on, a high pop foul.
- 1:23:59Off to the left of the plate, Howard Chase again over to the stands.
- 1:24:02Out of play.
- 1:24:05And the count remains two strikes on Roger Maris.
- 1:24:11We're in the top of the seventh.
- 1:24:13The score is seven to one, St. Louis.
- 1:24:18Maris, who's had ten out of 25 in the series, a 400 average, has driven in seven runs.
- 1:24:25Now to wind up by Santiago, the pitch.
- 1:24:28It's a long drive, but it's twist foul.
- 1:24:32Onto the roof in the right field corner.
- 1:24:35Maris got out in front, pulled that ball, but foul.
- 1:24:40Two strikes is the count.
- 1:24:43Santiago winds the pitch.
- 1:24:46Curve ball outside.
- 1:24:52Left-handed hitter digging in.
- 1:24:55One ball, two strikes.
- 1:24:57Here's the pitch.
- 1:24:59Another long drive foul.
- 1:25:02Just missed the light tower that time.
- 1:25:05Santiago from Puerto Rico.
- 1:25:10A friend since boyhood of Orlando Cepeda, the Cardinals.
- 1:25:1627-year-old right-hander winds, and here's the pitch.
- 1:25:19High five all, left center field.
- 1:25:22Kremski going over, so's Reggie Smith near the wall, and he has it.
- 1:25:27Maris wide deep for Reggie Smith in left center.
- 1:25:31That's one out and brings up Orlando Cepeda, facing his countrymen here.
- 1:25:37Cepeda, nothing out of three in this contest.
- 1:25:42One out, nobody on.
- 1:25:44The ball game in the seventh.
- 1:25:47Maris out in front, 7-1.
- 1:25:54Santiago winds, and here's the pitch.
- 1:25:57A fastball in there for a strike call.
- 1:26:01One strike, no ball.
- 1:26:03One out, nobody on.
- 1:26:05Top of the seventh.
- 1:26:07Santiago's pitch.
- 1:26:09Curve ball in there, a strike call.
- 1:26:14Santiago quickly out in front of Cepeda with two fast strikes.
- 1:26:21The outfield plays Cepeda straight away and deep.
- 1:26:25The pitch, curve ball into the dirt outside.
- 1:26:29One ball, two strikes.
- 1:26:32Crowd in neighborhood of 36,000, whatever they can get in here.
- 1:26:40For the decisive game of the World Series.
- 1:26:43He struck him out swinging.
- 1:26:46Cepeda goes down swinging.
- 1:26:48That's two out and brings up Kim McCarver.
- 1:26:51I think Orlando will be glad when this series is over, Pee-wee's having a tough one.
- 1:26:57Yeah, I'm sure that he will be, Harry, because Orlando Cepeda had quite a season.
- 1:27:03He led the Cardinals with the National League clinic.
- 1:27:05He's quite a hitter, but he's just in one of those slumps and can't seem to get on track.
- 1:27:09Here's McCarver and the pitch swung on, popped out.
- 1:27:13Elston Howard, who's going to get it?
- 1:27:15Foy comes down the line from third base and grabs it right in front of home plate.
- 1:27:19McCarver on the first pitch, popped to four.
- 1:27:22The Cardinals go down in order, one, two, three.
- 1:27:26The crowd up on his feet hoping for the lucky seventh.
- 1:27:30At the end of six and a half innings, the score remains St. Louis 7, Boston 1,
- 1:27:35after seven and eight. Arnie Ostrowski, what a year he's had, what a series he's had.
- 1:27:42A great ball player, an all-around ball player, facing a fellow by the name of Bob Gibson here in the bottom half of seven and eight.
- 1:27:50Arnie Ostrowski, the Triple Crown winner,
- 1:27:55is supposed to be the MVP of the American League.
- 1:27:58Here's a pitch and he takes a low.
- 1:28:01One ball, no strikes.
- 1:28:02This fellow's been outstanding not only with his bat in this series, but with his arm and with his feeling,
- 1:28:08and that's the way it was all year long.
- 1:28:14Bob Gibson delivers. Here it is.
- 1:28:16Fast ball low.
- 1:28:18Ball two.
- 1:28:19Two balls, no strikes.
- 1:28:21Yostromski's had two hits off Gibson in the series, two out of ten.
- 1:28:27Pop the shot and roll the second in this game.
- 1:28:30Here's a pitch.
- 1:28:32Striked over the outside corner, built high.
- 1:28:36Sound the count, two balls and a strike on Claudia Stremski.
- 1:28:41Ken Harrelson and George Scott are the first three hitters in this inning.
- 1:28:46The Red Sox trail by six runs.
- 1:28:48Here's the pitch.
- 1:28:50Ball three is outside.
- 1:28:52Three balls and a strike.
- 1:28:55Gibson walked.
- 1:28:57One man so far, and that was the leadoff man, Joe Foy.
- 1:29:01Here's a pitch to Yostromski.
- 1:29:09He had a cut and he missed.
- 1:29:11And the count is full of three balls, two strikes.
- 1:29:14Carl Yostromski, who swings so viciously but always makes contact.
- 1:29:21As I mentioned, he's only fan once in the whole series, and that time he was called out.
- 1:29:27Three balls, two strikes, the pitch.
- 1:29:30He walked and ball four.
- 1:29:33So Yostromski starts the seven for the Red Sox with a base on ball.
- 1:29:38And that brings up Ken Harrelson.
- 1:29:42Harrelson is nothing out of two in this game.
- 1:29:49Right-handed batter up there.
- 1:29:51George Scott will be next.
- 1:29:54So the Red Sox have the heart of their lineup coming up.
- 1:29:57Here's the pitch.
- 1:29:58Curveball in their first strike ball on Harrelson.
- 1:30:04He fanned twice in this game.
- 1:30:07Called out in the first, swinging in the fourth.
- 1:30:11Now the stretch, the pitch.
- 1:30:14It's a fastball low and inside.
- 1:30:16One ball, one strike.
- 1:30:24Right-handed hitter waiting.
- 1:30:26Yostromski in first base.
- 1:30:27The Peta doesn't hold him on.
- 1:30:29Now the pitch.
- 1:30:31Roll, ball two.
- 1:30:33Two balls and a strike.
- 1:30:35And Red Cheney, the final manager, comes crawling out to top.
- 1:30:39To his coach, Bob Gibson.
- 1:30:47These fans enjoying themselves and hoping for a Boston rally here.
- 1:30:53And he's closing in.
- 1:30:59Whatever Red Cheney said to Gibson didn't take long because he's back off the field.
- 1:31:05Gibson works quickly.
- 1:31:09A runner at first base, Yostromski, to push the house.
- 1:31:13He's one that he missed.
- 1:31:15And the count evens with two balls, two strikes.
- 1:31:18A lot of times in a situation like that, the manager will tell the pitcher to kind of take it easy, slow down, you're pitching too fast.
- 1:31:25This is the type of game that Gibson pitches.
- 1:31:29He always pitches fast.
- 1:31:31Two-two pitch.
- 1:31:32Here it is.
- 1:31:33Fencing ball, third shot.
- 1:31:35Knoxville has it.
- 1:31:36Second base for one.
- 1:31:37First base safe.
- 1:31:39So Harrelson forces Yostromski from Knoxville to hobby air.
- 1:31:45There's one away and that brings up George Scott, who has the only hit of the game.
- 1:31:49A triple off the center field wall.
- 1:31:57Scott during the regular season hit three-oh-three with 19 homers and 82 runs batted in.
- 1:32:04He's been especially effective against Bob Gibson in this World Series with four hits and nine times at bat.
- 1:32:12Right-handed batter with great power, the pitch.
- 1:32:16And it's in there, a slider caught the outside corner at the knees, strike one call.
- 1:32:24A runner at first base is Harrelson, has one off.
- 1:32:28Scott didn't like that pitch.
- 1:32:32Now moves back into the batter's box.
- 1:32:35Eddie Papowski coaching at third base, Bobby Dorr at first base.
- 1:32:39The stretch by Gibson, the fifth.
- 1:32:41Curled in there, a strike call.
- 1:32:43Two strikes and nothing.
- 1:32:46Gibson is fan nine.
- 1:32:51In the first game of the World Series he fanned ten.
- 1:32:54In his second game he struck out six.
- 1:32:56Here's the pitch.
- 1:32:57Foul tipped as Scott had a good cut.
- 1:33:00Two strikes, no ball.
- 1:33:03Yostromski opened the inning with a walk but was forced by Ken Howse.
- 1:33:09The Red Sox have had one run, one hit, one air.
- 1:33:12The Cardinals seven runs, ten hits, one air.
- 1:33:15That's the story as of now.
- 1:33:19The stretch by Gibson, the pitch to Scott.
- 1:33:21Swung on, a hard pop foul.
- 1:33:23McCarver coming back, near the screen, may have a play.
- 1:33:26He does.
- 1:33:28Scott fouls to McCarver.
- 1:33:30Two away.
- 1:33:32And that will bring up Reggie Smith, the brilliant center fielder of the Red Sox.
- 1:33:38Who at age 22 would seem to have some future theory.
- 1:33:42Well I've seen Reggie Smith part of this this year and he's going to be a good hitter.
- 1:33:46There's no doubt about that.
- 1:33:48He has one of the greatest arms I've ever seen.
- 1:33:51I've seen him make a couple of throws this year, throwing men out at home plate where I thought he had no chance to throw a runner out.
- 1:33:58And you're right, Harry, he's going to be a great one.
- 1:34:01He's had two home runs in this World Series.
- 1:34:03He's nothing out of two in this game.
- 1:34:04Here's Gibson's pitch.
- 1:34:06And it's a fastball high and outside.
- 1:34:09Reggie Smith has had one hit against Bob Gibson in the World Series, one out of eight.
- 1:34:15Two men are gone, Harrelson's at first base.
- 1:34:18We're in the bottom of the seventh.
- 1:34:19Gibson's pitch.
- 1:34:20And it's a fastball high and outside.
- 1:34:22Ball two.
- 1:34:24Two balls, no strikes.
- 1:34:26Reggie steps out of the batter's box, takes a look at the third base coach, Ed Papowski.
- 1:34:33The Red Sox trailing by six.
- 1:34:37They've been a miracle team all year long.
- 1:34:39Here's the pitch.
- 1:34:40And it's a strike call.
- 1:34:42A good slider caught the outside corner of Bonneha.
- 1:34:49Two men are away, bottom of the seventh.
- 1:34:54Bob Gibson from the belt delivers.
- 1:35:00Hot shot foul, Bobby Dore.
- 1:35:03Does a little cha-cha-cha step down there, skips the rope as it were.
- 1:35:06And that's the foul ball roll under his feet.
- 1:35:14We have a runner at first, Ken Harrelson, who forced Carl Yostremski open the inning with a walk.
- 1:35:20Scott then fouled a McCarver and we have Reggie Smith up there swinging and pulling the ball foul out of the park.
- 1:35:27Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:35:31We're in the bottom of the seventh.
- 1:35:36The Cardinals got out in front early with two in the third, two in the fifth, three in the sixth.
- 1:35:41The Red Sox scored in the fifth.
- 1:35:43Here's the pitch.
- 1:35:44High ball three.
- 1:35:47Three balls, two strikes.
- 1:35:48Harrelson will be going with the pitch.
- 1:35:51Enrico Panticelli is kneeling in the on-deck circle.
- 1:35:59There's the stretch.
- 1:36:00There goes Harrelson with the pitch.
- 1:36:02Bouncing ball foul.
- 1:36:04Passed Bobby Dore again.
- 1:36:06And Ken Harrelson returns to first base.
- 1:36:09Gibson has walked two and fan nine, allowed one hit.
- 1:36:18Reggie Smith about her.
- 1:36:21Switch hitter, hitting left-handed, of course, against Bob Gibson.
- 1:36:25Three balls, two strikes.
- 1:36:29There goes Harrelson.
- 1:36:30Here's the pitch.
- 1:36:31Swamp.
- 1:36:32High pop fly.
- 1:36:33Down to first base line.
- 1:36:35Javier crawling to the ball.
- 1:36:37Makes the catch with it back to the end bit.
- 1:36:39Reggie Smith popped to Javier.
- 1:36:42No runs, no hits, no errors, one left.
- 1:36:45And at the end of seven full innings, it's save over seven, Boston one.
- 1:36:51Harry Curran on PB Race.
- 1:36:54Bringing you the seventh game of the World Series.
- 1:36:56Fenway Park in Boston.
- 1:36:58We're going to the top half of the eighth inning.
- 1:37:00The first hitter for the Cardinals will be Mike Shannon.
- 1:37:03Then it'll be Javier and Dal Maxwell.
- 1:37:06Santiago will be the pitcher.
- 1:37:09He took over for Jim Longbaugh who started this game for the Boston Red Sox.
- 1:37:13Gibson's still in there for the Cardinals.
- 1:37:15I'll tell you all about it, Harry Carrey.
- 1:37:17All right, here we have Mike Shannon.
- 1:37:19We'll leave it all for the Cardinals.
- 1:37:20He's nothing out of three in this game.
- 1:37:25Facing Jose Santiago.
- 1:37:28Ball game in the top of the eighth.
- 1:37:30St. Louis out in front.
- 1:37:35Santiago has his side.
- 1:37:39And the pitch to Shannon.
- 1:37:43Swung on a bouncing ball.
- 1:37:44Petrocelli has it, but good alarm of his, and Shannon is out at first base.
- 1:37:48Petrocelli throws out Jim.
- 1:37:50One away.
- 1:37:52Petrocelli has about as fine looking a shot stop as you could want to see.
- 1:37:58Great arm, moves around gingerly.
- 1:38:01Has good range.
- 1:38:02And not only that, he hits the ball with power.
- 1:38:05Here's Javier who's had two hits in this game, including a three-run homer.
- 1:38:13Santiago's pitch.
- 1:38:15And it's a fastball in there for a strike call.
- 1:38:18Jim Lomborg pitched the first six innings.
- 1:38:23Santiago has retired four men in a row.
- 1:38:26Dave Moorhead is now warming up in the Boston bullpen.
- 1:38:29Santiago's pitch.
- 1:38:31Curveball, and he wasn't fishing for that one.
- 1:38:33Missed it a mile.
- 1:38:34A wide-breaking curve.
- 1:38:36Strike two on Javier.
- 1:38:39Javier has had nine hits in this series and 24 times at bat.
- 1:38:44Including a three-run homer, his first World Series homer.
- 1:38:49Out of pitch.
- 1:38:51Long drive right field.
- 1:38:52Harrelson going back.
- 1:38:54Near the track.
- 1:38:55Leaps and he makes the catch.
- 1:38:57A beautiful play.
- 1:38:59Ken Harrelson went back to the track and made a backhanded leaping catch.
- 1:39:04And Javier is good for an extra base hit.
- 1:39:07A fine play by the converted outfielder.
- 1:39:14Harry Kent is not supposed to be a good defensive outfielder, but that was a tough play.
- 1:39:18That ball was hit directly over his head.
- 1:39:20It was a tough play.
- 1:39:21He turned right on it and caught it right up against the fence.
- 1:39:24Here's Don Knoxville.
- 1:39:26And the first pitch to him is high and inside.
- 1:39:28Knoxville has had one hit today.
- 1:39:30Left off the third inning with a triple.
- 1:39:34And later scoring on a two-out single by Flunt.
- 1:39:38Here's the pitch.
- 1:39:39Curveball low.
- 1:39:41Santiago seems much sharper today than he did in either game he started.
- 1:39:48He pitched real well in the first game but lost 2-1 to Gibson.
- 1:39:54Now to wind up and here's the pitch.
- 1:39:56High pop fly on the infield.
- 1:39:59George Scott backing out on the grass.
- 1:40:01Waiting far and he takes it.
- 1:40:03So Knoxville pops out to Scott.
- 1:40:06One, two, three, nothing across.
- 1:40:08And at the end, the seven and a half innings here at Boston.
- 1:40:12The score, St. Louis 7, the Red Sox 1.
- 1:40:19Dalton Jones is going to be the pinch hitter next.
- 1:40:22Petticelli 0-2 today.
- 1:40:24The pitch is high.
- 1:40:25Ball two.
- 1:40:28Petticelli fanned on the second and fanned again on the fifth.
- 1:40:31Right-handed batter with good power.
- 1:40:36Hit 17 homers during the season.
- 1:40:38Here's the pitch.
- 1:40:39A fast ball in there for a strike call.
- 1:40:41Two balls and a strike.
- 1:40:46Here's the windup and the pitch.
- 1:40:48Line drive, base hit.
- 1:40:50Into the left field corner.
- 1:40:51Might be extra bases.
- 1:40:52Petticelli's around first.
- 1:40:54He's heading for second.
- 1:40:55Broad's throw.
- 1:40:57Hey, but second base.
- 1:41:00A strong throw by Luke Rock out of the left field corner.
- 1:41:03But Petticelli went sliding into the bag safely.
- 1:41:07So there's the second hit.
- 1:41:09The Red Sox have had two hits off Gibson and both have been
- 1:41:12for extra bases.
- 1:41:14A pimple by Scott and a double by Petticelli.
- 1:41:17Here's Dalton Jones.
- 1:41:20Seven hits in the series, batting 389.
- 1:41:24Left-handed hitter.
- 1:41:26Hit 289 during the season.
- 1:41:28Here's the pitch.
- 1:41:30Just away from a cover and Petticelli advances to third.
- 1:41:35Let's see how they're going to call that.
- 1:41:44Wild pitch on Bob Gibson.
- 1:41:48And Billy Muffet comes out of the cardinal dugout.
- 1:41:50He used to pitch to the Boston Red Sox.
- 1:41:53He's the pitching coach for the St. Louis Cardinals now.
- 1:41:56He used to pitch for St. Louis also.
- 1:41:58And he's talking to Bob Gibson.
- 1:42:00A double by Petticelli and a wild pitch.
- 1:42:04Places Petticelli at third base with nobody out.
- 1:42:09And Dalton Jones is the hitter with Narn Seabourn
- 1:42:12waiting to pitch hit next.
- 1:42:14Jones is batting for Olsen-Howard.
- 1:42:17Seabourn will be hitting for Jose Santiago.
- 1:42:23The Cardinal infield plays back.
- 1:42:25Willing to concede the run.
- 1:42:27They have a 7-1 lead.
- 1:42:29The wind up by Gibson to fifth.
- 1:42:31Pass ball outside.
- 1:42:32Ball to Steve Carlton, the left-hander.
- 1:42:36Nelson Braz, the right-hander, are in the cardinal bullpen.
- 1:42:40The wind up to fifth.
- 1:42:42Ball outside.
- 1:42:45Ball three.
- 1:42:47The Red Sox.
- 1:42:49The Brazos fans rowing again.
- 1:42:52With a good start here in the eighth inning to pitch.
- 1:42:55Ball four.
- 1:42:56He wants it.
- 1:42:58Now Dalton Jones gets a base on ball.
- 1:43:01And that'll bring up Narn Seabourn.
- 1:43:08Left-handed batter, Cepeda, comes over to top.
- 1:43:12To Bob Gibson.
- 1:43:14That for Gibson is the third base on ball to his gimmick.
- 1:43:18In the previous two games he had walked only one man.
- 1:43:24So here's Seabourn when runners are first and third.
- 1:43:28St. Louis leading 7-1.
- 1:43:33Seabourn, left-hand hitter to pitch.
- 1:43:36There's a strike out the knees, Carl.
- 1:43:39One strike and up off.
- 1:43:47Seabourn has power.
- 1:43:50Gibson's pitch.
- 1:43:52Curled in there, strike off.
- 1:43:56Seabourn hit.220, used as a pinch hitter most of the way.
- 1:44:00Groban's seventh run.
- 1:44:02Makes his home outside of Kansas City now.
- 1:44:06Formerly played with the Yankees as well as other clubs.
- 1:44:09Here's a stretch pitch to him.
- 1:44:11Bouncing ball to Javier.
- 1:44:12The run will score.
- 1:44:13The throw is the second, fourth play.
- 1:44:15Seabourn drives in the run as he forces Dalton Jones from Javier to Maxon.
- 1:44:20That makes it 7-2.
- 1:44:23Here in the bottom of the eighth.
- 1:44:25And here's Joe Foy.
- 1:44:29Foy in this game, walk, was out on strikes and fouled to the catcher.
- 1:44:36Nothing out of four against Gibson in the series.
- 1:44:40The pitch.
- 1:44:41And it's a strike, a slider caught the outside corner.
- 1:44:45Gibson throwing all hard stuff.
- 1:44:47Fast balls and slider.
- 1:44:51Seabourn, a short lead off first base.
- 1:44:54The Red Sox have to play it safe.
- 1:44:56They're looking for the big inning.
- 1:44:58Here's the stretch.
- 1:44:59The pitch.
- 1:45:01Low.
- 1:45:03Into the dirt, not evens it up at a ball and a strike.
- 1:45:07Gibson's still throwing hard.
- 1:45:10Steve Carlton, a left-hander.
- 1:45:12Nelson Braves, a right-hander.
- 1:45:13Both starting pitchers during the year while the Cardinals are in the bullpen.
- 1:45:18One ball, one strike.
- 1:45:20Their pitch.
- 1:45:22He swung and he missed the curve ball.
- 1:45:25Joe Foy.
- 1:45:29Right-handed Batu has power.
- 1:45:33Here's the pitch.
- 1:45:35A slimmer down towards Cepeda.
- 1:45:37Backhands of all, passes to Maxwell for the force play.
- 1:45:40Cepeda, range to his right, where a squibber hit off the end of the bat with a lateral reverse spin.
- 1:45:46Those kind can cause a lot of trouble frequently.
- 1:45:49But the ball came up for him.
- 1:45:51He fielded it backhanded and flipped to Maxwell for the force out of Seabourn.
- 1:45:58So now here is Mike Andrews with a runner at first.
- 1:46:03Two out, the score's 7-2.
- 1:46:08Petrocelli opened the same with a double.
- 1:46:11Advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a force out.
- 1:46:16After Dalton Jones had walked, batting for Elston Howard, Norm Seabourg hitting for Santiago.
- 1:46:24Bounce into a force play, allowing Petrocelli to score.
- 1:46:28Now the pitch to Andrews.
- 1:46:30He didn't mean to swing and moved half down the first base line.
- 1:46:33Gibson feels the ball and throws over to Cepeda.
- 1:46:36Gibson coming off the mound quickly.
- 1:46:38Andrews trying to stop his swing.
- 1:46:40And so it's one run, one hit, no errors, one left.
- 1:46:45And at the end of eight full innings, St. Louis 7, Boston 2.
- 1:46:50Top of the ninth inning, the Cardinals are out in front, 7-2.
- 1:46:55A good pitcher out there for the Boston Red Sox.
- 1:47:02And now to wind up the final game of the 1967 World Series,
- 1:47:11NBC's partner to Kurt Gotti on the game of the week, Pee Wee Reese.
- 1:47:16Okay, thank you, Harry, very much.
- 1:47:18We have a new pitcher, Dave Mohe.
- 1:47:20We'll pause for 30 seconds for station identification.
- 1:47:24WMAQ AM&F in Chicago.
- 1:47:32I go to the top half of the ninth inning.
- 1:47:35The Cardinals, seven runs, ten hits, and one error.
- 1:47:38The Boston Red Sox, two runs, two hits, and one error.
- 1:47:42Now Gibson's the first hitter, and it's a pleasure to have sitting by my side now.
- 1:47:47A fellow who works on NBC with Tony Kubek every Saturday,
- 1:47:51and I've worked with him before.
- 1:47:52It's a pleasure having him here.
- 1:47:53Jim Simpson. Jim?
- 1:47:55Thank you, Pee Wee, very much.
- 1:47:58Bob Gibson swings on the first pitch, foul it off the right, strike one.
- 1:48:05The last inning here, unless the Red Sox can come up with five runs
- 1:48:10in the bottom half of the ninth inning, don't ever count this ball club out.
- 1:48:14They've done the impossible all year.
- 1:48:16The Moorheads pitch to Bob Gibson, swing on, miss, strike two.
- 1:48:23Moorhead, the third pitcher for the Red Sox.
- 1:48:27Jim Lombard started for the Red Sox.
- 1:48:29Then Santiago, a good curve ball by Moorhead, struck out.
- 1:48:35Mr. Gibson.
- 1:48:39So starting the top half of the ninth here,
- 1:48:41Gibson strikes out, and that brings up Luberock.
- 1:48:44Luberock had quite a series.
- 1:48:49He's had two hits today.
- 1:48:51Got a base hit in the fifth inning, stole second, and then stole third.
- 1:48:57Got a double in the sixth inning, the first pitch to Luberock by Moorhead is low and outside, ball one.
- 1:49:04The Cardinals scored two in the third, two in the fifth, and three in the sixth.
- 1:49:07Red Sox scored one in the fifth, and one in the bottom of the eighth.
- 1:49:11A breaking pitch inside, two balls, no strikes on Luberock.
- 1:49:16Kirk Fleur, the on-deck circle.
- 1:49:20It's gone right down to the wire.
- 1:49:22We're the ninth inning now, the seventh game of the World Series.
- 1:49:26The fastball just caught the inside corner.
- 1:49:29Makes it count two balls and one strike on Lube.
- 1:49:33Luberock, the left fielder for the Sanctuos Cardinals.
- 1:49:38He has stolen six bases in these seven games.
- 1:49:45He came into this game batting 400.
- 1:49:51He's two for today.
- 1:49:55They play him straight away.
- 1:49:57The third baseman, Dalton Jones, weighing on the grass.
- 1:50:02The count is now three balls and one strike.
- 1:50:04His up pitch was too low.
- 1:50:05Dalton Jones has taken over at third base for George Scott.
- 1:50:13Moreheads pitch to Luberock is down on the left.
- 1:50:17We also have a new catcher, Russ Gibson,
- 1:50:21as we had a pinch hitter for Elson Howard in the last inning.
- 1:50:25The Red Sox, whatever happens in this game,
- 1:50:30I'll say one thing for them, they have nothing to be ashamed of.
- 1:50:34They have played great ball.
- 1:50:36There's a fastball inside.
- 1:50:40Ball for us of Luberock.
- 1:50:42Gets a free ticket.
- 1:50:48And the score being seven to two, Luberock, who loves to run.
- 1:50:53On top of five, he may not run here.
- 1:50:55Kirk Blood is a hitter with one away.
- 1:51:02There goes Brock. He took her off to throw the Gitsons in the dirt.
- 1:51:06Gets by Andrew Petracelli.
- 1:51:10Touch it out, but Luberock gets his third stolen base of the day
- 1:51:19and the seventh in the series.
- 1:51:26Dawkins Jones playing third in the place of Joe Foy.
- 1:51:33Russ Gibson in the place of Elson Howard.
- 1:51:41A new record has just been established by Luberock, seven stolen bases.
- 1:51:47The pitcher's outside.
- 1:51:49And one thing about this, Brock, whenever he gets on,
- 1:51:53seems like he upsets everyone, the pitcher, the catcher, and the infielders.
- 1:51:59And for playing in field so much when a guy's going to run, you have to always watch him.
- 1:52:04As the pitcher's outside, three balls, no strikes on Kirk Blood.
- 1:52:09The next hitter is Roger Marra.
- 1:52:14The Red Sox trail in this game by a score of seven to two.
- 1:52:18Gibson all the way for the Cardinals.
- 1:52:22Here's the pitch.
- 1:52:24That's for all the time outside.
- 1:52:29So, Lube gets a free ticket.
- 1:52:36And that brings up Roger Marra.
- 1:52:38What has Roger done today? He's singled.
- 1:52:41In the first inning, singled in the third inning.
- 1:52:44He hit a sacrifice, Brian, the fifth inning, and hit a five balls to Reggie Smith in center field.
- 1:52:49In the seventh inning, he's two for three.
- 1:52:54Morehead's pitched to him.
- 1:52:56A breaking pitch inside, ball one.
- 1:52:58But Morehead's got a little wild streak here.
- 1:53:03Morehead has a real good overhand curveball, good changeup.
- 1:53:08His only problem is getting that curveball over.
- 1:53:13One ball, no strikes for Roger Marra.
- 1:53:15Here's the pitch, a fast ball inside.
- 1:53:17Makes the count two and oh.
- 1:53:25Dick Williams, out to say something to Morehead.
- 1:53:28Russ Gibson, the catcher, comes out.
- 1:53:30In the bullpen, we have Dan Osinski warming up.
- 1:53:33And now then a left-hander's jumped up.
- 1:53:37And his name is Ken Brett, 19-year-old left-hander we saw over in St. Louis.
- 1:53:43And he looks sharp.
- 1:53:45He's doing it pretty hard.
- 1:53:47Williams now going off the field, Gibson back to his position.
- 1:53:52And a few words with Morehead.
- 1:53:55Trying to settle him down.
- 1:53:56Runners on first and second.
- 1:53:57Brock on it second.
- 1:53:58On it first, Kurt Blood.
- 1:53:59Roger Marra's for the hitter.
- 1:54:01It's one away, two balls, no strikes on him.
- 1:54:04Morehead looks back at Brock at second base.
- 1:54:06Here's the pitch.
- 1:54:07A swing and a foul, straight back.
- 1:54:09And the count is two balls and one strike on Roger.
- 1:54:14And a carry said a while ago that Brock Burry Selham steals third.
- 1:54:18He saw him all year, but he did take off the last time he was on second and stole third.
- 1:54:23Just watching him, he does not get too big of a jump.
- 1:54:26Petrocelli is playing pretty close to him, right in back of him.
- 1:54:30Roger Marra takes the next pitch.
- 1:54:31It's low and outside, ball three.
- 1:54:35Andrew is the second baseman, is playing Roger Marra to pull.
- 1:54:38He's way over toward first base.
- 1:54:40Petrocelli over close to the bag.
- 1:54:43Dalton Jones at third, right level with the bag.
- 1:54:49There's the pitch.
- 1:54:50It's high and inside, ball four.
- 1:54:52So the bases are loaded.
- 1:55:01So that's the third walk.
- 1:55:04Giving up a morehead and coming out of the dugout.
- 1:55:08An old friend of mine will play with me over at the Dodgers, and I played against him quite a few years when he was with the Giants and quite a pitcher he was.
- 1:55:16His name is Sal Magley.
- 1:55:19And he just gave a little sign out for the bullpen, looks to me like we're going to get a right-hander.
- 1:55:25And I believe it will be Dan Osinski.
- 1:55:32Not only has Brock broken the series record with seven stolen bases, his three steals in a game ties the series record.
- 1:55:43That was held by Hannes Wagner.
- 1:55:47A lot of you fans will remember the great shortstop that played with the Pirates.
- 1:55:51And I had a pleasure beating Hannes before he passed on, and what a great man he was.
- 1:55:58Well, Jim, up to this point, what have you thought about this game?
- 1:56:01Well, Peewee, for those of whom are Red Sox fans, of course the Red Sox are in deep trouble now.
- 1:56:06The morehead has given up three consecutive walks with only one out.
- 1:56:09But we can only look ahead because it is up to the Red Sox to do the scoring of more runs.
- 1:56:13In the last of the night, it will be Jusfranski, Harrelson, and Scott.
- 1:56:16In other words, the Red Sox go right into the middle of their power.
- 1:56:21Okay, Jim.
- 1:56:24Well, it's just a shame.
- 1:56:25Jim Lomborgue, who started this game, and he looked pretty good for a while,
- 1:56:31and you have to give him a lot of credit.
- 1:56:33He showed nothing but courage all year.
- 1:56:36He's pitched the big games for the Red Sox when they needed him.
- 1:56:40I saw him pitch that game on Sunday against the Minnesota Twins when they had to win.
- 1:56:47Not only did he pitch and win the game, he started the rally
- 1:56:51that brought him back with a bump down the third base line.
- 1:56:55He's pitched a lot of baseball this year.
- 1:56:58This is Jim Simpson along with Pee Wee Reese back at Fenway Park in Boston.
- 1:57:02We're in the ninth inning.
- 1:57:03The bases are loaded with one out, and the Cardinals lead 7-2.
- 1:57:06Osinski, the new pitcher, and he'll face Orlando Cepeda.
- 1:57:09Pee Wee?
- 1:57:10The bases are loaded.
- 1:57:12Orlando Cepeda, the hitter, and all the runners got there by the way of the walk by morehead.
- 1:57:17The first pitch for Osinski.
- 1:57:18It's popped up down the third base line in foul territory.
- 1:57:22Dalton Jones calls far.
- 1:57:24Rico Pescioli comes over and backs of him and takes it.
- 1:57:28Blue rocket, third base, tags up, makes a little blip with no one there at third.
- 1:57:34But I don't think he was really serious about it.
- 1:57:36Osinski, the pitcher, came in and cut the ball off.
- 1:57:39But Joe Wade, as Cepeda,
- 1:57:46still having trouble with that bat.
- 1:57:49Now then we're going to have Magni come back out again.
- 1:57:54And it wouldn't be a bit surprise that we may see the young left-hander,
- 1:58:00Ken Brett, coming in here.
- 1:58:03And the fans like this.
- 1:58:11Ken Brett, 19 years old.
- 1:58:14This will be a good experience for him, Jim.
- 1:58:17He may be around for a long time.
- 1:58:19He looked very good in St. Louis, Pee-wee.
- 1:58:21And as McCarver's about to come to bat, we cannot help but remember what you and Harry Caravan have been saying all along.
- 1:58:26McCarver, as well as Elson Howard of Boston Red Sox, have not been having good series with the bat.
- 1:58:32But Pee-wee, I'm sure that you will agree that they are the men who have been handling the pitchers,
- 1:58:36such as Jim Lawnbord, Nelson Wiles, and of course Bob Gibson.
- 1:58:40They're the ones who run this ball club, or these ball clubs when they're on the field.
- 1:58:43In that respect, I would say that McCarver and Howard have done tremendous jobs.
- 1:58:48It is only a shame that Howard, who could be playing his last year,
- 1:58:51and McCarver, who had such a great series back in 1964, have not done better as hitters.
- 1:58:56But as catchers, they've done exactly what they're supposed to do.
- 1:58:59Ken Brett is coming in.
- 1:59:00Pee-wee.
- 1:59:01Okay, Jim, yes sir.
- 1:59:03McCarver, as you said, has not had a good series with the bat.
- 1:59:07But back in 1964, talk about hitting.
- 1:59:12He was a batting leader in the 64 series, hitting a full 478,
- 1:59:19getting at least one hit in each of the seven games.
- 1:59:24His 478 average was the best by a National League player since Pepper Martin's 500 in 1931.
- 1:59:31Now, you're talking about Pepper Martin and the old Gas House Gang, the San Luis Cardinals.
- 1:59:37You know, it would have been nice, Jim, to see a couple of fellows here at the series.
- 1:59:42I understand one of them was here, Lefty Grove, a great pitcher with the Red Sox.
- 1:59:47And he was the last pitcher to win 30 games in the American League, 31 in 1931.
- 1:59:55And Dizzy Dean, who pitched for the Cardinals, he was the last pitcher to win 30 games in the National League.
- 2:00:03That was back in 1934.
- 2:00:05Dean pitching for the Cardinals and Dill pitching for the Red Sox and a couple of great ones.
- 2:00:11Well, we're about ready to go as young Ken Brett, ready to take over with the bases loaded two men away.
- 2:00:19And Tim McCarver is a hitter.
- 2:00:21Block on at third, Flurrod on at second, and Roger Marison at first base.
- 2:00:28Let's have a look at Ken Brett.
- 2:00:30Into the windup, the pitch, good fastball, hit down to George Scott at first base.
- 2:00:35He'll take it himself.
- 2:00:38One pitch, and the youngs in there out.
- 2:00:41So that's all for the Cardinals here in the top half of the ninth inning.
- 2:00:45No runs.
- 2:00:47So the score after eight and a half innings of play, they go to Cardinals 7, the Boston Red Sox 2.
- 2:00:55Well, Pee-wee, we move now to the bottom of the ninth inning, it'll be Yostrinsky, Harrelson, and Scott.
- 2:01:00And I'm sure that everyone in New England knows and around the country that the Boston Red Sox were not supposed to have won the American League tennis.
- 2:01:06Those two big games for the Minnesota Twins came from behind and won both.
- 2:01:09They were down three games to one to the Cardinals and have come back to win the next game.
- 2:01:13They've got this series at 6-6.
- 2:01:15They're now down by five runs, seven to two, three outs to go.
- 2:01:18But here's the big one coming up, Pee-wee, Kyle Yostrinsky.
- 2:01:22Yes, sir, never count them out.
- 2:01:24Bob Gibson's first pitch to Yostrinsky is low and outside.
- 2:01:27Ball one, the last chance for the Red Sox.
- 2:01:30And they have a great one starting off here in the top, bottom half of the ninth inning.
- 2:01:34It's 8-3, 7-2.
- 2:01:35Bob Gibson's pitch to Kyle Yostrinsky, a fastball that's outside, ball two.
- 2:01:44Still have action in the Cardinals, full pin.
