- 0:08Speaker 1: Row And in this standing at five foot ten, weighing
- 0:11Speaker 1: in at pound and coming to us from his super
- 0:15Speaker 1: secret bunker with no ac in Tucson, Arizona.
- 0:18Speaker 3: Put your hands together for Louis Montemao. Welcome back to
- 0:25Speaker 3: another episode of the Next Company podcast. Of course, on
- 0:27Speaker 3: one half of the show, Jameis and Welsh always drawn
- 0:31Speaker 3: by Louise and Louise. What's going on, man? It's been
- 0:35Speaker 3: an eventful two weeks and change.
- 0:37Speaker 2: What's going on man, jameson, I am stoked to be
- 0:40Speaker 2: back on the MIC for episode twenty eight, still celebrating
- 0:43Speaker 2: spooky season. I'm a little sleep deprived. I had a
- 0:46Speaker 2: double feature of Texas Chainsawn Masacer at Nightmare on Numb Street,
- 0:49Speaker 2: so I don't think I'm sleeping with the lights off
- 0:51Speaker 2: for the rest of this month. Possibly, are you looking
- 0:54Speaker 2: scars gart movies? No? No, how about this? Not typically,
- 0:58Speaker 2: but you know when you watch a couple in a
- 0:59Speaker 2: row and you turn off the lights and like the
- 1:01Speaker 2: fridge makes a noise, You're like, well, what the hell
- 1:04Speaker 2: is that? So yeah, yeah, yeah, typically not, but you
- 1:08Speaker 2: know it's a how about this. I watch scary movies
- 1:10Speaker 2: all year. They hit different when it's in October.
- 1:12Speaker 3: So yeah, yeah, I get it. I get it.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Plus plus I live in the ghetto, so there's always
- 1:17Speaker 2: it's always dangerous outside of Asta. Come on, but no, man, Yeah,
- 1:23Speaker 2: really excited to be back on the show here talking
- 1:25Speaker 2: to Boxing News. Let's get into it. But first I
- 1:28Speaker 2: want to thank our sponsored Delightful Smoke Shop in Tucson, Arizona,
- 1:32Speaker 2: for sponsoring the news segment. Check them out at six
- 1:35Speaker 2: twenty second Street and mark your calendars for Saturday, November fifteenth,
- 1:39Speaker 2: because they will be having the third annual Car Show
- 1:42Speaker 2: Extravaganza at five pm on site, so I'll be there
- 1:46Speaker 2: most likely with our producer Jabari Davis as well. So
- 1:48Speaker 2: I'm pretty stoked. So thanks to Delightful Smoke Shop for
- 1:51Speaker 2: the sponsorship and for forgetting his notice on the car show.
- 1:57Speaker 2: But yeah, let's see this past weekend, so we have
- 2:01Speaker 2: been working with a platform called Millions dot Co officials
- 2:05Speaker 2: partner of nineteen Media Group or network, and we've actually
- 2:09Speaker 2: been doing some interviews with some fighters thanks to their help,
- 2:12Speaker 2: and they were behind a pay per view for Danny
- 2:17Speaker 2: Garcia versus Daniel Gonzalez this past Saturday. Danny Garcia this
- 2:21Speaker 2: was supposed to be his big farewell to Brooklyn. Turns
- 2:24Speaker 2: out the fight ended with a Garcia knockout in the
- 2:27Speaker 2: fourth round with a killer hook, and Danny's already saying, well,
- 2:31Speaker 2: I got a probably got another fight in me. You know,
- 2:35Speaker 2: a lot of big talk about retirement, but you know,
- 2:36Speaker 2: you get a taste of success. It's kind of like
- 2:38Speaker 2: what we said about our boy Matt. Sorry you said
- 2:40Speaker 2: about our boy Manipacchio. Competitive fight keeps him fighting, kind
- 2:44Speaker 2: of brings him back into the ring. What is that
- 2:46Speaker 2: feeling of Like it must be that that I said,
- 2:49Speaker 2: that tastes of the success that you just can't you
- 2:51Speaker 2: just can't let go of. Fighters can't let go of.
- 2:53Speaker 2: I don't know what do you think about this this
- 2:55Speaker 2: trend player, Well, big.
- 2:58Speaker 3: Part of it is you guys retire at the end
- 3:02Speaker 3: when it's over, when it's over over. I don't like
- 3:05Speaker 3: the farewell of Brooklyn though Danny's a Philly fighter. I
- 3:07Speaker 3: know he fought a lot of fights in Brooklyn, but
- 3:09Speaker 3: he would have sold out Philly, or at least did
- 3:12Speaker 3: like twelve or thirteen thousand in Philly. I don't know
- 3:16Speaker 3: if the venue was available. I don't know all the
- 3:17Speaker 3: details about that. I know it is basketball and football season,
- 3:20Speaker 3: so it might be a little bit more difficult than normal. However,
- 3:24Speaker 3: with that being said, I would prefer that fight being
- 3:27Speaker 3: in Philly personally, but that's hither there. Fires fight until
- 3:30Speaker 3: they can't. So if a fire feels like he still
- 3:33Speaker 3: has something, he's gonna fight for a lot of reasons. One,
- 3:36Speaker 3: that's what they do. That's what they know. So that's
- 3:39Speaker 3: what you know, and that's what you do. You're gonna
- 3:40Speaker 3: keep doing it till you can't know more. Also, the money,
- 3:43Speaker 3: there's a checkout there, they're gonna get that check. And
- 3:45Speaker 3: he's one of the few guys out there that has
- 3:47Speaker 3: some name recognition. We're off name alone. He can probably
- 3:50Speaker 3: get a half million just to be on someone's card,
- 3:53Speaker 3: maybe a million, just because and those things count, and
- 3:56Speaker 3: especially in an economy that's kind of tough right now.
- 3:58Speaker 3: I don't blame anyone for trying to get that is
- 4:00Speaker 3: they can get it.
- 4:02Speaker 2: That's fair. You know, he's still obviously got name recognition,
- 4:04Speaker 2: he's still got some some heat on his name, and yeah,
- 4:07Speaker 2: I mean, if you if it went the distance, and
- 4:10Speaker 2: you know, maybe he kind of wont a split decision majority.
- 4:14Speaker 2: I could understand maybe him saying like, well, I'm gonna
- 4:16Speaker 2: stick to it, I'm gonna say my goodbyes, but you
- 4:18Speaker 2: got a fourth round knockout, and you know you got
- 4:21Speaker 2: They play all this stuff over and over in social media.
- 4:23Speaker 2: You know, I can't. I bet you get hyped up
- 4:26Speaker 2: and you're like, yeah, let's do that ship. Get I
- 4:30Speaker 2: can't I carry it. I mean, you know, I've only
- 4:32Speaker 2: ever done sparring with friends, but that that adrenaline rush
- 4:36Speaker 2: is no joke. It is not it's you can't. You
- 4:39Speaker 2: can't deny the Yeah, the the motivation of that adrenaline
- 4:45Speaker 2: rush of of you know, throws some punches, not dying
- 4:48Speaker 2: after getting hit in the face. For me specifically, that's
- 4:50Speaker 2: probably like my biggest the biggest w I tuck is
- 4:53Speaker 2: leaving the gym on my feet when I was doing
- 4:55Speaker 2: this ship But yeah, I mean the only thing about
- 4:59Speaker 2: it is that. But of course what I was doing
- 5:01Speaker 2: had his own level of danger. But getting into a
- 5:04Speaker 2: ring that is also no joke. You know that people
- 5:07Speaker 2: are putting their lives at risk every time they get
- 5:09Speaker 2: on there. So you know, hopefully with our fighters that
- 5:12Speaker 2: are getting up there in age, you know, they're not
- 5:15Speaker 2: putting themselves to that kind of position where, you know, right,
- 5:17Speaker 2: something tragic might happen. Knock on wood, right. But speaking
- 5:22Speaker 2: of Millions, by the way, so they were kind of
- 5:25Speaker 2: enough to set up some interviews for us, well for
- 5:29Speaker 2: me specifically, because there's only one one host at a time,
- 5:32Speaker 2: so I was very grateful for them. I was able
- 5:35Speaker 2: to talk to a couple of guys, one of them
- 5:39Speaker 2: named Johan Ingram, nicknamed the Boogeyman, the other guy named
- 5:42Speaker 2: the Dedication Daniel Bailey Junior. Awesome guys, really cool time
- 5:47Speaker 2: talking to them. It was a lot of fun. So
- 5:49Speaker 2: those interviews actually they're exclusively either on Millions dot co.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Our show is on there, video uploaded every time we
- 5:55Speaker 2: record an episode, or on YouTube we are we have
- 5:59Speaker 2: a playlist on nineteen media groups channel. So I would
- 6:01Speaker 2: encourage you to check those out. Uh, leave it a like,
- 6:04Speaker 2: give it a comment. If there are other questions, because
- 6:06Speaker 2: we do want to keep doing this with fighters. If
- 6:07Speaker 2: there's questions that you think you want to learn from
- 6:10Speaker 2: professional fighters, these are pros, please let us know. Here's
- 6:14Speaker 2: a little a little taste of what my interview with
- 6:18Speaker 2: Daniel Bailey.
- 6:20Speaker 4: Advice, and you learn from it, learn from their mistakes.
- 6:23Speaker 2: Let's say you've got a young kid who is getting
- 6:26Speaker 2: into boxing, a teenager and is really dedicated and loves it.
- 6:29Speaker 2: What steps would that kid I have to take to
- 6:31Speaker 2: go to get something more serious?
- 6:32Speaker 4: Learn from everybody when you have a boxer at a gym,
- 6:36Speaker 4: you got guys who've been pro for years. You got
- 6:38Speaker 4: guys who've been through what you're going through. So ask
- 6:41Speaker 4: those guys for advice, and you learn from it. Learn
- 6:44Speaker 4: from their mistakes because they gonna tell you what they
- 6:45Speaker 4: wish they would have done and things that you should
- 6:48Speaker 4: do immediately.
- 6:51Speaker 2: Awesome, what a great and a handsome interviewer that was.
- 6:56Speaker 2: But yeah, I know it was a lot of fun.
- 6:58Speaker 2: And also there's a lot of things I learned as well.
- 7:00Speaker 2: So it's because I don't know. I wouldn't imagine that
- 7:04Speaker 2: some guys in a boxing gym are also pros. Are
- 7:06Speaker 2: like like a gym that I would go to, like,
- 7:09Speaker 2: it wouldn't be in my mind that somebody was pro
- 7:11Speaker 2: at one time and actually fought just sitting there, you know,
- 7:15Speaker 2: in the same gym as I am, you know, hitting
- 7:17Speaker 2: the heavy bag or whatever. But that's a legitimate a thing,
- 7:20Speaker 2: like there's no there's no pro versus like you know,
- 7:24Speaker 2: gym's for regular dudes, right when it comes to boxing,
- 7:27Speaker 2: So no.
- 7:27Speaker 3: Gym is one size fit all. That's the funniest part
- 7:30Speaker 3: when we're talking about boxing, is it's unique unlike anything else. Uh,
- 7:35Speaker 3: there's no there's no rhyme or reason with boxing. It's
- 7:38Speaker 3: just boxing. Yeah, you have the gym is open to
- 7:43Speaker 3: the pros, but also when the pro's not there, you
- 7:45Speaker 3: got everybody training there. That's just how it goes now.
- 7:48Speaker 3: I like how he mentioned you learned from everyone else's mistakes.
- 7:52Speaker 3: That's a good thing we see. I'll give you an example,
- 7:56Speaker 3: Shakur Stevenson and Adrian Browner. You can see or one
- 8:00Speaker 3: guy's learning from someone else's mistakes seeing or one guy's
- 8:03Speaker 3: off the deep bend, and one guy's pretty level headed
- 8:05Speaker 3: and grounded and focused on the boxing as a whole.
- 8:08Speaker 3: You don't hear a lot of things by cur Stevenson
- 8:10Speaker 3: out there in the streets. You don't hear them about
- 8:12Speaker 3: him being outside or causing any problems or any legal issues.
- 8:16Speaker 3: You see Adrian brown like Adrian Brono was all these
- 8:18Speaker 3: guys OG because he came up a while ago. He's
- 8:21Speaker 3: all these guys as OG. He's the guy people looked
- 8:23Speaker 3: up to because at one time he was one of
- 8:26Speaker 3: the faces of the of the sport of the New era,
- 8:28Speaker 3: and we saw how that ended. So I like, how
- 8:31Speaker 3: you want people mistakes. Unfortunately, there's mistakes to learn from,
- 8:35Speaker 3: you know, it happens that way. But yeah, it's fairly
- 8:38Speaker 3: interesting for sure.
- 8:40Speaker 2: Yeah, especially since another thing with boxing that you know,
- 8:43Speaker 2: these are sometimes literal children, you know, getting into the
- 8:46Speaker 2: sport and training. You have to be really because it's
- 8:49Speaker 2: that it's a young man's game and if you don't
- 8:51Speaker 2: have somebody to guide you, not just on how to
- 8:53Speaker 2: throw a punch, you know, on how to move your feet.
- 8:56Speaker 2: There's all of these aspects of something we talked about
- 8:58Speaker 2: with both of these fighters that interview too, is like
- 9:00Speaker 2: careers end outside of the ring all the time, kind
- 9:04Speaker 2: of the way you said, people get in trouble, you know,
- 9:06Speaker 2: they get legal trouble, that they're not focused and it's
- 9:09Speaker 2: just it's just crazy. I mean I kind of feel like,
- 9:12Speaker 2: here's the question, because I only ever follow boxing. I've
- 9:15Speaker 2: only ever cared about boxing. Does boxing have like a
- 9:18Speaker 2: history of more notoriously like fighters getting into trouble outside
- 9:23Speaker 2: the ring than NFL or NBA does? I don't know
- 9:27Speaker 2: the different.
- 9:28Speaker 3: A lot of boxers train here, so when you're training here,
- 9:31Speaker 3: living here, there's a lot of temptation in Vegas, especially
- 9:35Speaker 3: when let's say you train four hours out the day
- 9:38Speaker 3: hypothetically speaking, let's you do your ring stuff, your cardio,
- 9:42Speaker 3: your weightlifting. Let's say that takes four or five hours
- 9:44Speaker 3: out of your day. You got nineteen and twenty hours
- 9:46Speaker 3: still left in Las Vegas. You got pretty women, you
- 9:49Speaker 3: got gambling, you got food, you got drugs. If you partake,
- 9:54Speaker 3: everything is here for you every day. So Terrence Crawford
- 9:58Speaker 3: training in Nebraska, it makes a lot of sense because, hey,
- 10:02Speaker 3: now a lot of distractions are outside of family, not
- 10:05Speaker 3: a whole lot going on out that way, But in Vegas,
- 10:07Speaker 3: which most guys are hanging out at, there's a lot
- 10:12Speaker 3: of distraction here, a lot of temptation, especially for younger
- 10:15Speaker 3: guys that have never been out here like that. When
- 10:17Speaker 3: you move out here from wherever you're from, it's a
- 10:20Speaker 3: huge culture shock. It's a huge you know, basically, somebody
- 10:24Speaker 3: spilling water on you and you have no idea where
- 10:27Speaker 3: it came from. Now you got to try to regroup
- 10:28Speaker 3: and figure out everything's gonna fly. It ain't for everybody.
- 10:31Speaker 3: It don't work out for everybody, but some people it
- 10:33Speaker 3: does because also things like this too. You're out here,
- 10:35Speaker 3: you probably got a little coint on, you probably made
- 10:38Speaker 3: a little money, so you you're able to enjoy the
- 10:40Speaker 3: things you never have where you're from. So that's why
- 10:42Speaker 3: I always ask that question, because it's very hard staying focus,
- 10:44Speaker 3: especially once you got a little bit of money on you.
- 10:47Speaker 2: That's a really really good point. And I mean, here's
- 10:50Speaker 2: the thing. You can be broken Vegas and just you know,
- 10:52Speaker 2: be only live at the gym because what else are
- 10:54Speaker 2: you gonna do? But yeah, if it's not it's never
- 10:58Speaker 2: been a cheap city, and I'm sure it's way less
- 11:00Speaker 2: cheap now to live in training you know, get around.
- 11:03Speaker 2: So uh yeah, it's kind of I would imagine as
- 11:07Speaker 2: a fighter training in Vegas with its history, and you know,
- 11:10Speaker 2: it's just it's just a super cool thing. It's like
- 11:12Speaker 2: you're kind of like being in the big leagues, you
- 11:14Speaker 2: know what I mean. For for a fighter trading in Vegas,
- 11:16Speaker 2: but but if you are a person who can make
- 11:19Speaker 2: it to the big leagues and you get there, then yeah,
- 11:23Speaker 2: how about this, Hey, there's a there's a reason that,
- 11:26Speaker 2: like I only did a couple a little bit of
- 11:29Speaker 2: boxing for fun because I would would never be dedicated
- 11:32Speaker 2: enough to live in Vegas. I just I can't live
- 11:34Speaker 2: in Vegas. Just now as a thirty nine year old band,
- 11:37Speaker 2: I just who has a decent.
- 11:39Speaker 3: Like, here's the thing. Everybody's camps are different. So back
- 11:42Speaker 3: in the day, people training big Beer. Big Beer was
- 11:44Speaker 3: a big place for a lot of boxers training that
- 11:46Speaker 3: for various reasons, get out the way and everything. But
- 11:48Speaker 3: Vegas is at the time, Vegas was very inexpensive, so
- 11:52Speaker 3: you can rent a house out for a very low price.
- 11:54Speaker 3: Cost living was very low and on the outskirts of
- 11:57Speaker 3: Vegas it's pretty quiet. But now now it's a little
- 12:00Speaker 3: bit different. It's not so inexpensive. A lot of things
- 12:04Speaker 3: have changed, so I get a lot of sides of it.
- 12:06Speaker 3: But yeah, things have definitely changed over the years.
- 12:11Speaker 2: Okay, So, and taking my original question, of course, you
- 12:14Speaker 2: live in Vegas to see a lot of fighters in Vegas,
- 12:16Speaker 2: but as a whole, do you see boxers as being
- 12:20Speaker 2: more boxers getting into trouble versus NBA players or foot players.
- 12:25Speaker 3: No, because most NBA guys are kind of like socially awkward,
- 12:29Speaker 3: so they do their stuff outside that you don't really
- 12:31Speaker 3: see them outside like that, they'll be ducked off somewhere.
- 12:34Speaker 3: They don't really do a whole lot except boxers, and
- 12:37Speaker 3: even with boxers, like most people of For instance, I'll
- 12:39Speaker 3: give you an example Jay Lean Love, who was on
- 12:42Speaker 3: everybody's under card fight ten years ago, like he was
- 12:45Speaker 3: always on the Floyd under card away BBC, like first
- 12:49Speaker 3: fight of the of the TVs, part of the of
- 12:52Speaker 3: the car even VU before he was after the three
- 12:56Speaker 3: PM fights. But he wasn't so much short of a fight,
- 13:00Speaker 3: but he would be always around like you see see
- 13:02Speaker 3: you know, you see him at Costco, takeout food wherever.
- 13:06Speaker 3: So it was just you didn't see him now, you
- 13:08Speaker 3: didn't really see him out in about partying, but you
- 13:10Speaker 3: saw him out about in general. I think now it's
- 13:13Speaker 3: a lot different because social media and also the younger
- 13:18Speaker 3: people don't necessarily aren't necessarily out and about like that,
- 13:22Speaker 3: Like younger generation is not the same as our generation,
- 13:25Speaker 3: our generation, commember, our duration heard how great Vegas was
- 13:29Speaker 3: from our parents and our people, so it was like
- 13:31Speaker 3: a thing to like, Hey, I can't wait till I
- 13:33Speaker 3: get twenty one, twenty two. I'm gonna go Vegas and
- 13:35Speaker 3: go crazy. This younger generation don't act like that, so
- 13:39Speaker 3: it's kind of different. Now. With that being said, your
- 13:42Speaker 3: temptations are still here no matter if you know whatever,
- 13:45Speaker 3: whatever advice you have, it will get exploited here.
- 13:49Speaker 2: Okay, So are you saying that Vegas is for the
- 13:51Speaker 2: old heads now? Is that where we are? Well?
- 13:54Speaker 3: I mean old heads, I mean over thirty, that's what
- 13:58Speaker 3: I mean.
- 13:58Speaker 2: Give you and me old heads, I said, I mean.
- 14:00Speaker 3: Yeah, I would say the older the over twenty eight
- 14:03Speaker 3: crowd for sure.
- 14:05Speaker 2: That's so interesting, you know, and again there's a lot
- 14:07Speaker 2: of things that I'm learning about boxing and boxing culture
- 14:09Speaker 2: that I never really learned before the show because I
- 14:12Speaker 2: always said I only care about what happens in the ring,
- 14:14Speaker 2: like when the bell rings, everything else going on, you know, deals,
- 14:18Speaker 2: press confidence, I've never kid about any of that. But
- 14:22Speaker 2: the culture of where you train is so important for fighters.
- 14:25Speaker 2: That's just wild to me. You know, learning this now
- 14:27Speaker 2: after you know, watching boxing ferbs as long as they're
- 14:29Speaker 2: a live boss.
- 14:30Speaker 3: Well, Louise, think of like this, how many times has
- 14:33Speaker 3: a fighter got beat in the press conference? The corner
- 14:36Speaker 3: and the trainer is like, we should have had a
- 14:38Speaker 3: better camp, We should have had a better camp, We
- 14:39Speaker 3: should have took camp more. Seriously, we start a camp
- 14:43Speaker 3: too late. There's too many breaks in camp, too many
- 14:46Speaker 3: distractions of the camp. Happens often like whenever somebody lose
- 14:49Speaker 3: the fight they should lose. It was like the first
- 14:51Speaker 3: excuse they have less or hurt. But oh, our camp
- 14:54Speaker 3: wasn't as great as it should have been, or we
- 14:55Speaker 3: could have had a better camp, and that all all
- 14:58Speaker 3: that is uh intertwine. How however, you can't have a
- 15:01Speaker 3: great camp here in Vegas. You can do your job,
- 15:04Speaker 3: be ready for fight night. Man. That's not an excuse.
- 15:07Speaker 3: It just comes down to the strong will of the
- 15:09Speaker 3: person and also the person that's remain focused.
- 15:12Speaker 2: Yeah. One of my interviews John Ingram, he trained out
- 15:15Speaker 2: of Vegas. Now he actually fights out of Arizona. But
- 15:17Speaker 2: he said he's he's a country boy, so he doesn't
- 15:19Speaker 2: go out like that. He does country things. He likes fishing,
- 15:21Speaker 2: you know, kind of things like that, so kind of
- 15:24Speaker 2: how it keeps his focus and then Daniel Bayle is
- 15:26Speaker 2: from Miami. Kind of the same thing. You know, that's Miami.
- 15:29Speaker 2: I always say, a lot of high flights, a lot
- 15:31Speaker 2: of hot nights. But his take on it was, you
- 15:33Speaker 2: grew up here, you just see like a celebrity. He said,
- 15:36Speaker 2: Lil Wayne is just walking down the street. You're like, oh,
- 15:38Speaker 2: that's a little Wayne. So that kind of was you know,
- 15:42Speaker 2: you see, yeah, beautiful ladies everywhere, but it's just kind
- 15:45Speaker 2: of what your life is. So it's a really really
- 15:48Speaker 2: interesting take from these guys who you know, they I
- 15:52Speaker 2: admire if I in so many ways, but I also
- 15:54Speaker 2: I always wonder for their next interview. I got to
- 15:56Speaker 2: ask somebody like, when you're that focused you live at
- 15:58Speaker 2: the gym, Like, do you feel like you're missing out
- 16:00Speaker 2: on partying on the weekends, you know, having a nice
- 16:04Speaker 2: you know, so a bunch of fried chicken, some steak, whatever,
- 16:08Speaker 2: Because yeah, I when I was.
- 16:11Speaker 3: Because some people are been on sweets. Some people really
- 16:14Speaker 3: crave sweets and like cheesecake and cookies and brownies, et cetera.
- 16:19Speaker 3: Some people are digged to the carbs. Some people love pasta,
- 16:22Speaker 3: Italian food, Chinese.
- 16:23Speaker 2: Oh yeah, absolutely, Yeah, I was working out like, you know,
- 16:26Speaker 2: six days a week, a couple of hours in the gym,
- 16:28Speaker 2: but I was doing it so I could stuff my
- 16:30Speaker 2: fat face and get hammered on the weekends, you know
- 16:32Speaker 2: what I mean. So, but that's just like it's just
- 16:35Speaker 2: so different in that mindset of I can't really overdo it.
- 16:39Speaker 2: Even one day week chee days are not really that
- 16:41Speaker 2: much of a thing. It's just amazing. It's just like
- 16:44Speaker 2: an amazing mindset the fighters have. They're almost like space
- 16:46Speaker 2: aliens to me. I got without different there. But yeah,
- 16:51Speaker 2: so please yo, a couple of great interviews. I think
- 16:54Speaker 2: about did about twenty twenty five minutes or so with
- 16:56Speaker 2: each guy, so it doesn't take up a lot of
- 16:57Speaker 2: your time. Millions dot co. Find the Mixed Company podcast there,
- 17:01Speaker 2: or go to our YouTube channel sorry our YouTube playlist
- 17:04Speaker 2: on the nineteen media group channel to check those out.
- 17:07Speaker 2: So yeah, and one thing, just another thing that I
- 17:11Speaker 2: just want to mention. We don't have to get into
- 17:13Speaker 2: a whole thing, but tell Fema Lopez and Chris Stevenson
- 17:16Speaker 2: we're supposed to fight, are supposed to fight. At the
- 17:18Speaker 2: beginning of twenty twenty six, the tell Femo saying crap, like, well,
- 17:22Speaker 2: it's still marinating. It's still like we're figuring it out.
- 17:26Speaker 2: This file, this of all the people, this fight Putter
- 17:29Speaker 2: Knucket cancels.
- 17:29Speaker 3: God damn it him, man, I'm getting tired because he's
- 17:33Speaker 3: the one that can make He's the one that can
- 17:35Speaker 3: make the fight. Sha Curse. Stevenson is taken a lot
- 17:37Speaker 3: of concessions with a lot of guys, and when it
- 17:40Speaker 3: comes to fights recently and negotiations or whatnot. Tired of
- 17:44Speaker 3: hearing this. I'm tired of the whole excuses. Either you
- 17:47Speaker 3: want to fight or you don't. At the end of
- 17:49Speaker 3: the day, let's cut the nonsense out. Let's cut the
- 17:52Speaker 3: posturing out Let's cut the tweets and all that out.
- 17:55Speaker 3: Either you want to fight or you don't. If you
- 17:57Speaker 3: don't want it, it's okay. We need to move on
- 17:59Speaker 3: to people who actually want to fight.
- 18:02Speaker 2: Yes, Taylor is the A side, Score is the B side,
- 18:05Speaker 2: So yes, Chaquor. I feel that Shaquur is more serious
- 18:07Speaker 2: about it. I feel I mean, obviously, tail Fe Malopez
- 18:10Speaker 2: is a great fighter. He is a very skilled, talented fighter.
- 18:14Speaker 2: Period the return return new paragraph. You know, I'm not
- 18:17Speaker 2: gonna knock that there, but I feel that he also
- 18:20Speaker 2: doesn't take the sport that seriously. He takes this, you know,
- 18:23Speaker 2: training and fights it, but the sport as a whole
- 18:26Speaker 2: his I guess I could say maybe his responsibility is
- 18:29Speaker 2: one of the stars of the sport, you know, one
- 18:30Speaker 2: of the faces, one of the big names. Like that
- 18:32Speaker 2: means you gotta get your ass out there and get
- 18:34Speaker 2: in the ring with guys like there's no you're there's
- 18:37Speaker 2: no other things that you do as a boxer, like
- 18:39Speaker 2: you do social media and stuff like that to promote
- 18:42Speaker 2: your fights. Right when we talk about another fighter that
- 18:45Speaker 2: a little later that got into the weeds doing all
- 18:48Speaker 2: kinds of other crazy shit, but that's later, this this
- 18:51Speaker 2: in this episode. But yeah, I agree, I'm kidding. I'll
- 18:55Speaker 2: get a little test. Sometimes he's funny. I'm not gonna lie.
- 18:57Speaker 2: Sometimes tail Field makes me laugh, and sometimes I'm like, bro,
- 19:00Speaker 2: shut your goddamn out, shut your mouth to get in
- 19:02Speaker 2: the ring. I just I just hate that the you know,
- 19:08Speaker 2: the dilly dell and get back and forth. Pick a date.
- 19:11Speaker 2: You know, I'm not saying that, you know, coming to
- 19:14Speaker 2: an agreement to a country, because he's another thing I
- 19:16Speaker 2: don't know anything about when it comes to being a
- 19:18Speaker 2: pro fighter, But I it's easy enough. I feel like
- 19:23Speaker 2: they make it harder than that it needs to be.
- 19:25Speaker 3: It's my ticket exactly, And I'll put it this way.
- 19:28Speaker 3: When it comes to contracts, majority of the frameworkers already
- 19:32Speaker 3: read upon. We're arguing over little things that don't need
- 19:35Speaker 3: to be argued about this point, we want to see
- 19:37Speaker 3: the fight. November is next week. At that point, we
- 19:40Speaker 3: have about sixty ish days left in the year. Once
- 19:44Speaker 3: December tenth or thirteen comes around, the last two weeks
- 19:48Speaker 3: of the year, no one's shut her out in anyway,
- 19:51Speaker 3: So we got about six more weeks in this year,
- 19:53Speaker 3: and then once the first week of January comes, we're
- 19:56Speaker 3: on to a new year. So we need to figure
- 19:58Speaker 3: something out sooner than later. We don't need this drug.
- 20:01Speaker 3: Kids been going off for a whole year. Basically, this
- 20:03Speaker 3: whole tumming pools went off for this whole calendar year.
- 20:06Speaker 3: It's a waste of time. We need fights, we need
- 20:08Speaker 3: anticipation going to the next year. We need that as
- 20:11Speaker 3: a sport. It has to happen. But we'll see, we'll see.
- 20:16Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a really good point. You know, it's gonna
- 20:18Speaker 2: be the end of the year like that, we're gonna
- 20:21Speaker 2: be talking, We're gonna be making Christmas plans like that.
- 20:25Speaker 2: So yeah, and this year, well, of course we'll do
- 20:28Speaker 2: in a sort of an end of year review. But
- 20:30Speaker 2: like I feel like this year had just a lot
- 20:32Speaker 2: of dilly delling back and forth about lots of fights.
- 20:35Speaker 2: Like Candella Crawford was kind of sucked the air out
- 20:37Speaker 2: of the room. But if you look back, I mean
- 20:40Speaker 2: it was always stop and start with this tale specifically,
- 20:43Speaker 2: you know, supposedly maybe Ryan blah blah blah, and man,
- 20:46Speaker 2: you know, I don't want to get down on the
- 20:49Speaker 2: sport because I love it so much. But that's kind
- 20:51Speaker 2: of why I've been doing a lot of you know,
- 20:54Speaker 2: checking out different places that have different fights. We talked
- 20:57Speaker 2: about over time boxing recently. You know, I just I
- 21:00Speaker 2: just want to see fights. I want to see talented
- 21:02Speaker 2: people get into the damn ring, and you know, it
- 21:06Speaker 2: kind of relying on you know, the the bigger names
- 21:08Speaker 2: to get off the damn couch and do their jobs.
- 21:11Speaker 2: So anyway, another thing that's a little bit uh maybe
- 21:17Speaker 2: frustrating and uh, you know, kind of disconcerting about the
- 21:19Speaker 2: boxing world. I'm gonna have a bit of a longer
- 21:22Speaker 2: conversation here about Dana White and his his role in
- 21:25Speaker 2: the boxing world. You know, we talked about at about
- 21:27Speaker 2: a little bit. Some things have been going on with
- 21:31Speaker 2: him trying to get into the boxing world, but his
- 21:34Speaker 2: way in the Saudi's way. So let's see, let's start here.
- 21:37Speaker 2: So Dana White has a company called Zoofo Boxing's the
- 21:40Speaker 2: UFFA that's owned by TKO Holdings. TKO also owns UFC
- 21:46Speaker 2: WW and it's backed by the Sadis. So big money,
- 21:50Speaker 2: big like the like. These are serious people. This is
- 21:53Speaker 2: serious money that you know is getting involved in boxing.
- 21:57Speaker 2: But apparently Dana White doesn't just want to jump in
- 22:02Speaker 2: throw his head into the ring. Pun intended his his
- 22:07Speaker 2: plan this this whole I guess which you'll enterprise. His
- 22:10Speaker 2: plan is to do it by changing the safeguards, legal safeguards,
- 22:16Speaker 2: federal safeguards in boxing, specifically under the Muhammad Ali Act
- 22:19Speaker 2: of two thousand. So this is kind to drive me
- 22:22Speaker 2: crazy because I've been reading a lot about this. There's
- 22:24Speaker 2: a lot of back and forth. You know, the Mohammad
- 22:26Speaker 2: le Act, it was created to protect the rights of boxers. Okay,
- 22:31Speaker 2: it was intended to reduce corruption. There's a lot of
- 22:34Speaker 2: things that it does, you know, get in some details,
- 22:36Speaker 2: but it's not perfect. Boxing has never been for Boxing
- 22:40Speaker 2: has basically been probably one of the most corrupt sports ever,
- 22:43Speaker 2: but it's something and some things, whether they're not enforceable,
- 22:47Speaker 2: they're good ideas. Right. Dana White and his you know cohorts,
- 22:52Speaker 2: they're very heavily involved in involved with with politics with
- 22:57Speaker 2: this administration specifically, they're there is a Muhammad Ali Revival
- 23:01Speaker 2: Act which actually tries to gut a lot of these
- 23:03Speaker 2: protections and I'm not very happy about it. There's a
- 23:06Speaker 2: lot of people in the sport not very happy about
- 23:08Speaker 2: it either. To want to get your take before we
- 23:10Speaker 2: get into Louise Jamison of where we stand right now
- 23:13Speaker 2: with this.
- 23:13Speaker 3: So ironically, I've said often on our show that Floyd
- 23:19Speaker 3: made whether they're ruined boxing, well, he also helped boxing
- 23:23Speaker 3: a lot as well. Mean that fighters are able to
- 23:25Speaker 3: get paid their net, their their fair share, they're able
- 23:30Speaker 3: to make you know, they're able to you know, they're
- 23:32Speaker 3: able to make a profit on their skill set. Some
- 23:36Speaker 3: fighters are not paid more than they probably should have,
- 23:38Speaker 3: but hey, that's what the sport was due to Floyd.
- 23:41Speaker 3: Floyd drove the money up some Oflar, how Tiger Woods
- 23:43Speaker 3: drove up in golf and other athletes and other sports.
- 23:46Speaker 3: That being said, they're trying to ruin that now. They
- 23:49Speaker 3: are trying to tear all that down. Whenever you have
- 23:53Speaker 3: people from outside trying to come in, it's basically like
- 23:55Speaker 3: a private equity firm coming in and trying to take
- 24:00Speaker 3: over get involved. They have no concern for the sport
- 24:03Speaker 3: itself or the boxer itself. They're trying to maximize the
- 24:07Speaker 3: value of each and every fight and whatever happens to
- 24:10Speaker 3: the fighters, if happens. The issue with the UFC, the
- 24:12Speaker 3: reason why we don't know a lot of the stars
- 24:14Speaker 3: because I don't get paid that much. Dana White and
- 24:17Speaker 3: UFC takes a lot of the money. They control all
- 24:19Speaker 3: of the money. Boxing isn't like that. If they're trying
- 24:22Speaker 3: to get boxing to get like UFC, it will not work.
- 24:26Speaker 3: It will not work. That's not what we're here for
- 24:29Speaker 3: and it shouldn't be like that. However, we are trending
- 24:32Speaker 3: that way. Until boxers step up and speak out, I
- 24:36Speaker 3: don't know what's gonna happen. I don't know.
- 24:39Speaker 2: I got some actual stats here for you to get
- 24:43Speaker 2: a reaction from you. In UFC. Specifically, the athletes usually
- 24:48Speaker 2: have about eighteen percent of the revenue share. Okay, boxers
- 24:52Speaker 2: can be as high as eighty percent.
- 24:54Speaker 3: Correct.
- 24:55Speaker 2: Here's another thing. UFC fighters they cannot have personal sponsorship deals.
- 25:00Speaker 2: They're not allowed. Boxers can, of course they can. You know,
- 25:03Speaker 2: they can put whoever they want and they're on their
- 25:05Speaker 2: boxing trunks and you know, Canelo's out here doing I
- 25:08Speaker 2: saw Canelo doing a corocial for for that Lord of
- 25:10Speaker 2: the Rings TV show for Amazon and Spanish, like I guess,
- 25:13Speaker 2: like the promoted in Mexico or something, which is kind
- 25:16Speaker 2: of ridiculous but makes sense, you know, huge Mexican celebrity.
- 25:20Speaker 2: But yeah, I mean, like you said, it's top down
- 25:23Speaker 2: with UFC. Dana White is at the top of the
- 25:25Speaker 2: chain and most of the money goes there. Here's the thing.
- 25:30Speaker 2: You don't go into boxing and wanting to like impose
- 25:34Speaker 2: your own model. That's in a very different sport, completely
- 25:37Speaker 2: different ways it up here. MMA Mixed Martial arts is
- 25:40Speaker 2: the style of fighting. UFC is the promotional company. Like
- 25:44Speaker 2: people just say UFC because that's that's like, I think
- 25:47Speaker 2: it has ninety percent market share in MMA, right right,
- 25:51Speaker 2: because who the hell else I wouldn't even know any
- 25:54Speaker 2: other protia company for for mixed martial arts. I don't
- 25:57Speaker 2: know if you've ever heard of one. Yeah, so you
- 26:01Speaker 2: know they're the big game and they here's the thing.
- 26:03Speaker 2: I'll even go ahead and be be generous and say,
- 26:06Speaker 2: Daniel White, credit to you for you know, doing this
- 26:08Speaker 2: and setting up the UFC in your in your own
- 26:12Speaker 2: way to benefit you because you're the big guy. You're
- 26:15Speaker 2: the big man on campus. You can't do that shit
- 26:17Speaker 2: at boxing just because you know, you know, you're you're
- 26:19Speaker 2: friendly with whatever administration is currently in power at any
- 26:23Speaker 2: given time. You know what I'm saying, Like, you can't
- 26:25Speaker 2: do it because you're also had connections with the Saudi's
- 26:28Speaker 2: and you want to completely change these these regulations that
- 26:32Speaker 2: here's the thing, boxing is so corrupt the federal government
- 26:35Speaker 2: had to get involved in. Say, we're the fans and
- 26:37Speaker 2: we think this is fucked.
- 26:38Speaker 3: Up, right, right, right, right, Yeah, it's not a good idea,
- 26:43Speaker 3: though it's not there's other ways things can be done that,
- 26:46Speaker 3: ain't it?
- 26:47Speaker 2: Right?
- 26:47Speaker 3: Do you know?
- 26:48Speaker 2: Do you know what a big, big reason for the
- 26:51Speaker 2: Ali Act was in the nineties, Jameson that we've talked
- 26:53Speaker 2: about before on the show.
- 26:54Speaker 3: Well, a lot of guys that they might took by
- 26:56Speaker 3: the promoters. A lot of guys were in the up
- 26:59Speaker 3: bro Unfortunately it was one of them, but Mike Tyson
- 27:02Speaker 3: had to take Don keying in the quart a couple
- 27:04Speaker 3: of times. You know, there's a lot of boxers that
- 27:07Speaker 3: have complained of foul play from the promoters and the
- 27:10Speaker 3: two Bangs promoter for Don King and Bob Aarrow. So
- 27:14Speaker 3: there you go.
- 27:15Speaker 2: Yeah, the one one major thing that I like. Here's
- 27:18Speaker 2: the thing. There's a lot of aspects of the l
- 27:21Speaker 2: E Act that I never knew about. One thing that
- 27:23Speaker 2: I always knew was that it keeps distance between the
- 27:26Speaker 2: promoter and the manager, right, can't be the same guy.
- 27:29Speaker 2: Because that was Don King's issue is that his nephew,
- 27:31Speaker 2: he was a promoter done his nephew was the manager
- 27:33Speaker 2: and they had to sign with both guys. So that
- 27:37Speaker 2: was that was That's how a lot of dudes are
- 27:39Speaker 2: getting their money taken.
- 27:41Speaker 3: And also for those that are out there who ever
- 27:44Speaker 3: get a little bit of money, never have your manager
- 27:47Speaker 3: and the agent be repped by the same company. It
- 27:50Speaker 3: doesn't work out well, you know, or the the agent
- 27:54Speaker 3: and the finance company be on the same office that nah.
- 27:59Speaker 2: No, yeah, so that's one very specific thing. And here's
- 28:04Speaker 2: the thing. People who are still try to get away
- 28:07Speaker 2: with that shit, you know, try to do shady deals
- 28:09Speaker 2: of just like you know, oh, I'm your manager, this promoter,
- 28:11Speaker 2: I'm not gonnact that he's just my buddy that I've
- 28:13Speaker 2: known for you know, since we were kids, or here's
- 28:14Speaker 2: my neighbor or whatever. You know, they try to skirt
- 28:17Speaker 2: it already. Even though the ELIAC is a good.
- 28:19Speaker 3: Idea, it's a very good idea, and we don't need
- 28:23Speaker 3: deregulation in terms of sports. We don't need that. We
- 28:26Speaker 3: need we need the rules to say, the rules. There's
- 28:29Speaker 3: no need to loosen them up, no need for change.
- 28:32Speaker 3: Let's yeah, I think we should keep things as they
- 28:34Speaker 3: are and go from there.
- 28:36Speaker 2: Agreed. And here's the problem. I don't think the issues
- 28:39Speaker 2: that the very real issues with the li A because
- 28:42Speaker 2: it's not perfect, is that you know, enforcing is difficult,
- 28:44Speaker 2: et cetera. The way to fix this issue is not
- 28:47Speaker 2: more deregulation, you know, it's to find better ways to
- 28:50Speaker 2: address those problems. I don't think anybody, anybody serious, anybody
- 28:55Speaker 2: who really cares about boxing, the sport, the safety of
- 28:58Speaker 2: the fighters, the welfare and them being taken take advantage of.
- 29:01Speaker 2: I don't think anybody really who really cares about that
- 29:05Speaker 2: has an issue with the provisions in the l E Act.
- 29:08Speaker 2: I think it is all it's the same bullshit that
- 29:11Speaker 2: we hear all the time from you know, the government
- 29:13Speaker 2: of well, this is going to help competition, this is
- 29:15Speaker 2: going to help innovation, this is going to help you know,
- 29:18Speaker 2: it's just helping to help me will make more more money.
- 29:20Speaker 2: Let's be let's call it what it is.
- 29:22Speaker 3: Okay.
- 29:23Speaker 2: So that's my biggest issue with it. There's no real
- 29:26Speaker 2: need for it. It's just likely to happen because we've
- 29:30Speaker 2: got the people with the money, with the right connections,
- 29:34Speaker 2: we have the ability to push this through. So now
- 29:36Speaker 2: that the the ALI Revival Act, which is the new
- 29:41Speaker 2: crappy one, it is not currently passed through through Congress.
- 29:44Speaker 2: It has to be past House Senate, be signed by
- 29:47Speaker 2: the President. Okay, that has not happened. I don't see
- 29:49Speaker 2: that happening probably this year with you know, we don't
- 29:51Speaker 2: have it. We don't even have a government right now
- 29:53Speaker 2: as of this recording. As if this show in October
- 29:56Speaker 2: at twenty twenty five, at the moment, we don't have one.
- 29:58Speaker 2: So but here's the thing. You know, there's plenty of time,
- 30:02Speaker 2: and it's I feel like it's just a matter of
- 30:04Speaker 2: time if more and more fighters don't speak out, more
- 30:08Speaker 2: people involved. Hell, there was a time in twenty sixteen
- 30:11Speaker 2: when a Mark way Mullen, I don't remember if he
- 30:14Speaker 2: was a senator. I don't remember. He's a senator or
- 30:16Speaker 2: a representative, but he's a former actual former MMA fighter.
- 30:20Speaker 2: He tried to apply the lact not just to boxing
- 30:23Speaker 2: the UFC, and UFC lost their goddamn minds, right. They
- 30:27Speaker 2: threw at Randy Couture, an MMA star was trying to
- 30:32Speaker 2: speak up against it. In UFC are like, we're we
- 30:34Speaker 2: don't want this guy involved in any of the talks
- 30:36Speaker 2: because they know that he's he's for the fighters, because
- 30:40Speaker 2: the former fighter himself. Right, So this is just this
- 30:44Speaker 2: is a shit show. I mean, they're trying to spin
- 30:46Speaker 2: this as like now, I will say, the way that
- 30:49Speaker 2: they're trying to package this is that it's good for
- 30:51Speaker 2: the fighters and give some freedom to choose, you know,
- 30:54Speaker 2: where and how they compete. They actually have I got
- 30:56Speaker 2: this here, a minimum pay of one hundred and fifty
- 30:58Speaker 2: dollars per round, which some states have less, some things
- 31:01Speaker 2: don't even have. So okay, like that's cool, and you
- 31:07Speaker 2: know that's that's a that's a good idea on paper.
- 31:11Speaker 3: Yeah, but it can't.
- 31:13Speaker 2: Come with all of these other you know, gutting of
- 31:15Speaker 2: the of the l EXL.
- 31:16Speaker 3: But that doesn't help the guys we know. That only
- 31:18Speaker 3: helps the guys that fight in the small fights in
- 31:20Speaker 3: small towns. That doesn't help anyone fight that's fighting on
- 31:24Speaker 3: TV or fighting on stream. One fifty round doesn't know.
- 31:28Speaker 3: It doesn't help anything.
- 31:30Speaker 2: And here's the thing. You can always just make that change.
- 31:33Speaker 2: You can always just make a you know, specific change
- 31:36Speaker 2: to the minimum pay per round. That's perfectly fine. There's
- 31:39Speaker 2: nothing that.
- 31:40Speaker 3: You don't want a minimum pay around. Because what happened
- 31:43Speaker 3: is guys will the guy that's beating up the guys
- 31:46Speaker 3: just trying to hang around. Now you have fights that
- 31:49Speaker 3: are born, there should still be a flat fee. If
- 31:51Speaker 3: someone's giving you twenty grand for the fight, then that
- 31:53Speaker 3: show that show that sho cut. You get one hundred
- 31:56Speaker 3: grand for the fight, then that show cut. Once you
- 31:58Speaker 3: start having a minimum going around, tricky things get weird.
- 32:02Speaker 3: Now we start overanalyzed and things. We've been just fine
- 32:05Speaker 3: without that. We don't that we don't need it.
- 32:10Speaker 2: That's fair, you know, I've I've never I've never had
- 32:13Speaker 2: an issue with minim wage period for anything. But I
- 32:15Speaker 2: can I can see your side of it. I think
- 32:18Speaker 2: also what we can, what people can do, is innovate.
- 32:21Speaker 2: We talked a few episodes ago about overtime sports. They
- 32:23Speaker 2: have things like knockout bonuses, and then they have knockout
- 32:27Speaker 2: bonuses for the first and the last round, so fights
- 32:29Speaker 2: start exciting and then end exciting.
- 32:31Speaker 3: You know, I think you have knock out bonus in general,
- 32:33Speaker 3: just have that as a part of the pot. I
- 32:36Speaker 3: think that would meant for a lot more interesting fights.
- 32:39Speaker 3: But also, like, here's the thing too, If if you
- 32:43Speaker 3: knock somebody out within the first four rounds, your bonus
- 32:47Speaker 3: is higher. So let's say the bonus is twenty grand,
- 32:50Speaker 3: we knock somebody out the first four rounds, it's fifty grand,
- 32:52Speaker 3: you know what I mean. I think the old are
- 32:53Speaker 3: things where we can we can enhance excitement. But honestly, Louise,
- 33:00Speaker 3: you just want to see good fights. I think they
- 33:02Speaker 3: we want to see good fights that don't have any
- 33:03Speaker 3: bs to that. That's all I think that's all really want.
- 33:06Speaker 3: Whatever it takes to get there, we'll deal with. We
- 33:08Speaker 3: just don't want to know shanigans. I think that's the
- 33:10Speaker 3: biggest thing out of everything.
- 33:12Speaker 2: Sure, And like I said earlier, yeah, I love this
- 33:14Speaker 2: sport more than most things in the world. And I
- 33:17Speaker 2: don't believe that Dana White has the integrity of the
- 33:20Speaker 2: sport in mind. You know, you say what you will
- 33:23Speaker 2: about the Saudi's, you know, coming in with money and
- 33:25Speaker 2: you know, trying to uh getting into to a lot
- 33:29Speaker 2: of different thing sports and concerts and comedy shows to
- 33:32Speaker 2: kind of offset their human rights abuses. But what Turkeylo
- 33:35Speaker 2: Shake did is he was putting together big fights and
- 33:38Speaker 2: he was giving people, you know, putting people together. It
- 33:42Speaker 2: took a lot of extra money. I believe he did
- 33:44Speaker 2: say that Canela Crawford had a knockout bonus as well,
- 33:46Speaker 2: not that even though those dudes need the damn money,
- 33:48Speaker 2: especially you know, even after the actual payment they were
- 33:51Speaker 2: going to get from the fight. But things can be
- 33:55Speaker 2: done to make better this. This is not it, you know,
- 33:58Speaker 2: i't me give you some more. Get your thoughts on
- 34:00Speaker 2: another specific thing that this new act is trying to do.
- 34:04Speaker 2: So they're trying to create what's called UBOs unified boxing organizations,
- 34:08Speaker 2: so they're alternative from the sanctioning bodies, so they have
- 34:12Speaker 2: their own rankings, their own belt and there's not as
- 34:15Speaker 2: many regulations. Now we've all already talked about the sanctioning bodies,
- 34:18Speaker 2: the commissions. WOWBC, they have their issues. But is this
- 34:23Speaker 2: really like going to be a benefit to have a
- 34:25Speaker 2: completely separate, little linear, top down organization.
- 34:29Speaker 3: No, no, it won't. Like the more people you have
- 34:32Speaker 3: in the kitchen, the worse it gets. We need a
- 34:34Speaker 3: boxing commissioner that oversees everything that get people on the
- 34:37Speaker 3: same page, or at least get some sort of organization.
- 34:41Speaker 3: Right now, every federation has its own rules. Everybody's kind
- 34:45Speaker 3: of flying by the seat of their pants. Everything is
- 34:47Speaker 3: a freestyle. I'm not a big fan of that. I
- 34:50Speaker 3: think that the sport deserves more organization. I think that
- 34:53Speaker 3: there's too much money involved for it to be this scatter. However,
- 34:57Speaker 3: some of the money might not be on up and up,
- 34:59Speaker 3: so maybe we're opening up a can of worms we
- 35:01Speaker 3: don't even open up. I don't know, but it feels
- 35:04Speaker 3: like boxing is a so unorganized and it the the
- 35:08Speaker 3: overall direction of it just no one knows because there's
- 35:10Speaker 3: no set plan, there's no set direction, So it just
- 35:13Speaker 3: feels like we're all just kind of waiting to see
- 35:16Speaker 3: what the next announcement. Instead of oh, okay, it's November,
- 35:18Speaker 3: we know this, this and that's happening. It's it's a
- 35:21Speaker 3: really worse spot right now.
- 35:24Speaker 2: Yeah, And if you go back to a couple episodes ago,
- 35:26Speaker 2: right before the Canelo Crawford fight, you know, we spoke
- 35:29Speaker 2: to legendary sports commentator Al Bernstein. He was talking about
- 35:33Speaker 2: how it's the way he described as how boxing is.
- 35:37Speaker 2: If you have the United States States without a federal
- 35:42Speaker 2: government with any rules, that's kind of how boxing is.
- 35:44Speaker 2: Everybody's kind of doing their own thing this and that.
- 35:46Speaker 2: But like, I think this would be worse because now
- 35:50Speaker 2: you're not just kind of trying to regulate it in
- 35:52Speaker 2: terms of you know, fighter protection, whatever fairness, et cetera.
- 35:56Speaker 2: You're just kind of like setting up one dude at
- 35:58Speaker 2: the top to do whatever the hell he wants with
- 36:01Speaker 2: no real like oversight and just make their own rules
- 36:04Speaker 2: and have the money flow however they want it. And
- 36:07Speaker 2: I think that's like that's part of the actual problem
- 36:10Speaker 2: that the problems that we have now in boxing, that's
- 36:13Speaker 2: more of that problem, just in a different way.
- 36:15Speaker 3: I think, Man, you don't want at the end of
- 36:23Speaker 3: the day, boxers for what they do to their bodies
- 36:26Speaker 3: and for what they do to put on a show.
- 36:28Speaker 3: Whenever they perform. They should be in control of where
- 36:31Speaker 3: the money goes, what goes on with the money, et cetera,
- 36:34Speaker 3: et cetera.
- 36:36Speaker 2: Right, And here's the thing. I we talked about Randy
- 36:39Speaker 2: Catuur being you know, a big, a big star in
- 36:41Speaker 2: MMA and UFC. You know, kind of broke out of that.
- 36:44Speaker 2: But for somebody who did did not follow UFC, Like
- 36:47Speaker 2: I learned who he was because he was in that
- 36:49Speaker 2: first Expendables movie as one of the dudes. It was
- 36:52Speaker 2: like they had a slice the loan and like adult
- 36:55Speaker 2: luneleriness and then Randy Catuur. I'm like, oh, I guess
- 36:58Speaker 2: he must be a big deal in UFC. But that's
- 37:01Speaker 2: like he None of these guys, like you said, are
- 37:04Speaker 2: able to go mainstream. The other guy I know is
- 37:07Speaker 2: uh Frands is the Ghano because he actually beat uh
- 37:10Speaker 2: Tyson Fury in a fight and got robbed by that decision.
- 37:16Speaker 2: Just justice for Frands is the goddamn but anyway, Yeah,
- 37:20Speaker 2: I mean this is uh sorry, I don't mean to
- 37:22Speaker 2: be kind of rambling, but there's just so many ins
- 37:24Speaker 2: and outs of this, uh you know, this attempt to
- 37:26Speaker 2: get this act that it's not going to be good.
- 37:29Speaker 2: We can we can say this, I can say this,
- 37:32Speaker 2: and in a more concise way, is that gutting the Muhammallik,
- 37:35Speaker 2: the the the Ali Revival Act would be bad for
- 37:39Speaker 2: the sport. Having Dana White take his UFC model and
- 37:43Speaker 2: apply it to boxing would be bad for the sport.
- 37:45Speaker 2: Now I know that there are a boxes out there
- 37:47Speaker 2: with who would love to have an opportunity. Dana what
- 37:50Speaker 2: is a name? He's uh we talked before how how
- 37:54Speaker 2: much we had like seven billion dollars for UFC on
- 37:56Speaker 2: Paramount plus they also tossed a few bucks to ZUFA Boxing,
- 38:00Speaker 2: so we will have fights on there as well. That's cool.
- 38:03Speaker 2: At the end of the day, credible credits due. Let's
- 38:05Speaker 2: have more fights available people to watch, more fights for
- 38:08Speaker 2: young fighters like the dudes I interviewed millions to you know,
- 38:11Speaker 2: get their names out there. I'm sure being told you're
- 38:15Speaker 2: going to sign with this guy who's the biggest deal
- 38:17Speaker 2: in the world in combat sports, and he's going to
- 38:20Speaker 2: get you on, you know, in a ring on on
- 38:23Speaker 2: a TV like that's exciting. I wouldn't fault anybody for
- 38:27Speaker 2: thinking that it's a good idea to sign the Data White.
- 38:29Speaker 2: Let's be very clear about that, right. But Yeah, one
- 38:34Speaker 2: of the final things I want to say on this
- 38:36Speaker 2: is see I got a quote here. Look Thomas co
- 38:39Speaker 2: host of the show Morning Combat. He said, what does
- 38:43Speaker 2: it say about a law's ability to prevent monopoly if
- 38:46Speaker 2: a monopoly from another industry won't enter the space until
- 38:49Speaker 2: they can get the rules helping to prevent the monopoly
- 38:52Speaker 2: over And that's what it is. I mean, you want
- 38:55Speaker 2: to get into boxing, data cool, join join the group here.
- 39:00Speaker 2: Don't say I'm gonna I have to do it my
- 39:01Speaker 2: way because that's the only way I'm gonna gonna invest
- 39:04Speaker 2: in the sport. I think that's to be honest, right,
- 39:07Speaker 2: what's your take on that? And whether how about this?
- 39:10Speaker 2: If Data Wait cannot get this act revoked or at
- 39:14Speaker 2: least cut it or whatever it is, can we expect
- 39:17Speaker 2: to still see him in the boxing world.
- 39:20Speaker 3: He's gonna hang around because he deals with Turkey. Uh Turkey,
- 39:25Speaker 3: So he's gonna hang around. But he's gonna try every
- 39:29Speaker 3: which way to make money off the fight, and it's
- 39:31Speaker 3: only gonna be the big fights. It's not gonna be
- 39:33Speaker 3: the small ones. It's gonna be the big, big fights.
- 39:35Speaker 3: He ain't gonna be on the ones that are only
- 39:37Speaker 3: on his own only ain't gonna happen. He's not here
- 39:39Speaker 3: for that. He's not, so he's gonna be around. I
- 39:43Speaker 3: just don't think it's gonna get done. I think boxers
- 39:46Speaker 3: have been too satisfied in the ways that they've made
- 39:51Speaker 3: and they don't want to go away from that. I
- 39:52Speaker 3: don't think they want to go away from that. And
- 39:54Speaker 3: things are already weird now with how many times they
- 39:56Speaker 3: fight a year. So yeah, I don't see anything changing.
- 40:00Speaker 3: But yeah, I don't see Dana White being able to
- 40:02Speaker 3: bully himself in the boxing. I don't see it, okay.
- 40:05Speaker 2: Uh And yeah, you know, the a lot of the
- 40:08Speaker 2: people in boxing like the way it is, and Oscar
- 40:10Speaker 2: Deloye has spoken out against Dana White, but Oscar is
- 40:12Speaker 2: not fighting anymore. Like we're talking about young guys who
- 40:16Speaker 2: want to make a name for themselves and they, you know,
- 40:19Speaker 2: Dana White is is a known property. You know, I'm
- 40:22Speaker 2: more kind of worried about that is that you're kind
- 40:24Speaker 2: of taking the uh the guys who have a lot
- 40:27Speaker 2: of a lot of going for them, get them into
- 40:29Speaker 2: the system where they're signing these contracts that are going
- 40:31Speaker 2: to screw them over, not going to make the money
- 40:33Speaker 2: that they that they should be making. And we already
- 40:38Speaker 2: have a problem not just with people fighting as often
- 40:40Speaker 2: or not are infrequently, we also have a problem with
- 40:44Speaker 2: young guys trying to make a name for themselves and
- 40:46Speaker 2: getting out there. You know, we talked about how social
- 40:49Speaker 2: media is essential to I think it's essential as a
- 40:52Speaker 2: pair of boxing gloves for young guys these days because
- 40:54Speaker 2: there's so many names out there and it's hard to
- 40:57Speaker 2: break through. So are we going to have you know,
- 41:00Speaker 2: a bunch of Dana White uh uh boxers that are
- 41:05Speaker 2: like UFC guys that nobody's heard of, that the general
- 41:08Speaker 2: you know, public doesn't know by name. That sucks, don't
- 41:12Speaker 2: think so? No, I think that's the worry, and that's
- 41:17Speaker 2: what I really hope, you know. Just I have no
- 41:20Speaker 2: problem with Dana putting getting his mits into into professional
- 41:24Speaker 2: box That's not what I'm saying here, But to do
- 41:27Speaker 2: it with all of this baggage and all of the
- 41:29Speaker 2: Saudi money trying to do this specifically to this act.
- 41:32Speaker 2: I think that's beast for the sport and I really
- 41:35Speaker 2: think that they should not be passing UH through covers.
- 41:39Speaker 2: So that's my take. Anyway, any other thoughts on this
- 41:43Speaker 2: before we uh?
- 41:45Speaker 4: Good?
- 41:46Speaker 2: Yeah, that's uh. That's that's Luis's rant for the day.
- 41:51Speaker 2: All right, let's move on to uh. Speaking of people
- 41:54Speaker 2: fighters that have made their name in the mainstream that
- 41:57Speaker 2: are well known by most people, and even they don't
- 41:59Speaker 2: follow box. Let's get into many Pakiao. We are going
- 42:05Speaker 2: to talk about our recurring segment Pop Pugilism, in which
- 42:08Speaker 2: we discuss a movie or TV show about boxing. And
- 42:11Speaker 2: as always, this segment is sponsored by our friends at
- 42:15Speaker 2: the Bad Movies, Worse People podcast, and they actually sent
- 42:18Speaker 2: us another custom ad here from my buddy Jack See
- 42:21Speaker 2: what do you got for us?
- 42:22Speaker 3: Jack Beck?
- 42:24Speaker 5: A confession to the people. I've been on a Bad
- 42:27Speaker 5: Movies podcast too long. I have now started enjoy things
- 42:30Speaker 5: like Steal and Catwoman and have no time for things
- 42:34Speaker 5: like Superman from nineteen seventy eight, often not as a masterpiece.
- 42:38Speaker 5: And here I am looking forward to watching Daredevil someday,
- 42:42Speaker 5: maybe even god willing Electra, and I'd like to just
- 42:45Speaker 5: say sorry for my behavior. Thank you Bad Movies Worse
- 42:49Speaker 5: People dot Com.
- 42:52Speaker 2: Thanks Jack, Bad Movies Worse People dot Com. Check them
- 42:56Speaker 2: out wherever you get your podcast. So today we're talking
- 42:58Speaker 2: about a documentary from fourteen called Many about of course,
- 43:02Speaker 2: none other than Mini Paccio, one of the greatest fighters
- 43:05Speaker 2: of all time, my bad, one of the greatest fighters
- 43:09Speaker 2: of all time, Jamison, What did you think of this documentary.
- 43:13Speaker 2: Let's get some initial thoughts from you before we get
- 43:15Speaker 2: into I.
- 43:16Speaker 3: Forgot how big a starr he actually was, like watching
- 43:19Speaker 3: the whole thing. Obviously I knew he how big he was,
- 43:21Speaker 3: but he was an actual superstar in this country. And
- 43:24Speaker 3: it's very rare for a non American to be a
- 43:28Speaker 3: superstar in this country. It's very rare. It's not possible,
- 43:31Speaker 3: but it's very rare. And his prime, he was must
- 43:35Speaker 3: watch TV. He was loved by a lot of fans,
- 43:38Speaker 3: casual and fanatics. He was different. He was different, hell
- 43:44Speaker 3: of a prime, hell of a run. Yeah, and I
- 43:47Speaker 3: maybe go back. I remember Funk Morales a few times
- 43:52Speaker 3: in like the mid two thousands. It was like a big,
- 43:56Speaker 3: big fight, like a big, big deal. And I also
- 43:59Speaker 3: didn't realize that obviously he's Filipino. Whenever a boxer from
- 44:04Speaker 3: a country like that, the whole country gravitateds for that boxer.
- 44:08Speaker 3: And yeah, man pak Yaw was for the stoop star
- 44:12Speaker 3: he had in this country. He was much bigger overseas
- 44:15Speaker 3: as well, and he was good. But on the show
- 44:17Speaker 3: a lot of times it's interesting that people gravitated towards him.
- 44:24Speaker 3: Because Floyd would go the distance in his fights, pack
- 44:27Speaker 3: Yew would get people out of here quick. So you
- 44:30Speaker 3: think of how he fought Oscar basically got Oscar out
- 44:33Speaker 3: of here. Floyd didn't fought Riggy Hatton. He got rig
- 44:36Speaker 3: ated Riggy Hatton out of here quickly. Floyd didn't, you know,
- 44:39Speaker 3: so a lot around that time it was known why Hey,
- 44:42Speaker 3: pack Ow's the much easier watch per se, but it
- 44:48Speaker 3: was all all it was really good, really really really good.
- 44:51Speaker 3: H doc.
- 44:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I definitely like the PAQW. Mayweather eras like the
- 44:58Speaker 2: time that I can last you remember is when a
- 45:00Speaker 2: boxer kind of broke out of just being known by
- 45:03Speaker 2: boxing fans. You know, I feel like, because like everybody
- 45:06Speaker 2: knew who the hell both of these guys were right
- 45:08Speaker 2: and I feel like they knew it, even though even
- 45:10Speaker 2: if they have never seen a match. I think that's
- 45:12Speaker 2: kind of the last time that I don't know. I
- 45:15Speaker 2: don't know that a lot of people know Canelo if
- 45:17Speaker 2: they even if they've never seen a boxing match, A
- 45:20Speaker 2: lot of Mexican outside maybe outside of Mexicans. I don't
- 45:22Speaker 2: know what you think.
- 45:23Speaker 3: People have heard his name for so long that they
- 45:26Speaker 3: know of him, but it's not the same superstar feel people.
- 45:32Speaker 3: Pacquiao felt like a superstar. Canl is one, but it
- 45:36Speaker 3: don't feel that way, if that makes sense, not in
- 45:40Speaker 3: the same way pak Yao was. Pak Yao was a
- 45:43Speaker 3: superstar and it felt that I mean, hell pa, a
- 45:48Speaker 3: Nike deal, all kinds of Yeah, he was. It was different.
- 45:51Speaker 3: It was way way different.
- 45:54Speaker 2: Yeah, and got to give credit to him. You know,
- 45:56Speaker 2: I'm I'm Mexican American, but you know that Manny Pacia
- 45:59Speaker 2: was the mexicane or one guy after another, you know,
- 46:02Speaker 2: he uh Mexican Mexican boxing star. I got knocked down,
- 46:06Speaker 2: knocked out, beaten by Manny. And And here's the thing,
- 46:10Speaker 2: Mexicans like the two. They still too did to watch
- 46:12Speaker 2: their favorites get you know, get pubbled fighting style.
- 46:15Speaker 3: They love this fighting style. However, we know what happened.
- 46:19Speaker 3: We know what happened the one Mexican he could not
- 46:22Speaker 3: get by.
- 46:25Speaker 2: Yeah, but that's it took to the fourth fight because
- 46:27Speaker 2: I don't think it.
- 46:27Speaker 3: Did have a lot of questionable things that happened a
- 46:29Speaker 3: lot of questionable decisions and whatnot when you go back
- 46:32Speaker 3: and watch those fights, a lot of questionable things that's
- 46:35Speaker 3: in place, but neither here nor there.
- 46:37Speaker 2: Yeah, if I remember correctly, and they did mention in
- 46:40Speaker 2: the document But you know, my brain is Mushie's mushly
- 46:43Speaker 2: by the But I think he I think many won
- 46:45Speaker 2: all three fights, but definitely least one was a very
- 46:50Speaker 2: very controversial decision. Maybe the third one it was like
- 46:53Speaker 2: it was one of those like, hey, are we looking
- 46:56Speaker 2: at the same thing here? You know, you could say, well,
- 46:58Speaker 2: you know, maybe he should have won this run one
- 46:59Speaker 2: of that. I believe the vibe around number three was
- 47:03Speaker 2: Benny did not win that fight. That was a gift
- 47:05Speaker 2: to say.
- 47:07Speaker 3: So quickly.
- 47:07Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, and what's this documentary starts with the famous knockout,
- 47:12Speaker 2: which is wild, and it ends, it starts and ends
- 47:15Speaker 2: and book it's bookended by that fight. So it's also
- 47:19Speaker 2: hilarious that near the end this isn't a spoiler because
- 47:22Speaker 2: it's the man's life, but right at the very end,
- 47:25Speaker 2: you know, they they they close out the documentary with
- 47:28Speaker 2: the Marquez four fight and the you know, classic punch
- 47:33Speaker 2: that gets Manny on the chin plays and they play
- 47:36Speaker 2: some you know, some little footage here when he was younger,
- 47:39Speaker 2: that shot boom plays again, bra go to the Brah.
- 47:42Speaker 2: But I think like four times I got I'm sorry,
- 47:45Speaker 2: I was cackling. I was like, man, this is this
- 47:47Speaker 2: is Manny's documentary. Why are you ending with him getting
- 47:50Speaker 2: slept for like four times in a row. But that
- 47:54Speaker 2: was fun. But yeah, there's another crazy thing that it
- 47:59Speaker 2: didn't really again we're worldheads were washed, and you know,
- 48:02Speaker 2: you think back at all this time that we all
- 48:05Speaker 2: the things that we know and learn about boxing so far,
- 48:07Speaker 2: this documentary is from twenty fourteen and the Mayweather back
- 48:13Speaker 2: and forth. You know, is this fight going to happen?
- 48:14Speaker 2: The fights in the media, you know, the arguments in
- 48:17Speaker 2: the media, that's a part of it, But the fight
- 48:21Speaker 2: itself happened in twenty fifteen, so it's not a part
- 48:23Speaker 2: of this documentary. So it was wild to see this
- 48:25Speaker 2: because we just think back. I'm like, yeah, they fought
- 48:27Speaker 2: like around this time, you know where this was at.
- 48:29Speaker 2: But no, we're seeing a picture of what it was
- 48:32Speaker 2: like before that, and it ran me like that was
- 48:35Speaker 2: it took forever to make that fight. There was some
- 48:37Speaker 2: you know, back and forth about this, this is not
- 48:40Speaker 2: doing the drug test, it's cheating here, blah blah blah.
- 48:43Speaker 2: You you sit down and watch this in theaters at
- 48:45Speaker 2: the time, you still might not know if that fight
- 48:47Speaker 2: is happening. You know, I don't know exactly when it
- 48:49Speaker 2: was announced. So that was wild to me because it's
- 48:51Speaker 2: just the thing that we just know, like Mayweather, I'm
- 48:54Speaker 2: packing up fought and that's that, you know what I mean,
- 48:56Speaker 2: right right right.
- 48:57Speaker 3: It's like it was so the first j m In
- 49:01Speaker 3: fight was a draw. So it was a draw, two
- 49:05Speaker 3: questionable decisions, and then the infamous knockout. So that's what
- 49:09Speaker 3: made it. That's what you got four. If you beat
- 49:11Speaker 3: God three times in earl, you're not getting fourth to one.
- 49:13Speaker 3: That's not happening. But the lot the middle too, were
- 49:16Speaker 3: so highly contested they had to fight again.
- 49:20Speaker 2: That's a that's a really good point as well. Yeah,
- 49:22Speaker 2: I uh, it's wild that number. You never see so
- 49:25Speaker 2: and so, you know the fourth so and so over
- 49:27Speaker 2: and so and so in the fourth fight. Like it's
- 49:29Speaker 2: all trilogies. Everybody's trilogy is obsessed. I blame Lord of
- 49:32Speaker 2: the Rings, that blame Star Wars. Even with movies, everybody
- 49:34Speaker 2: has to make a trilogy. You can just make two
- 49:36Speaker 2: or four things. That's fine, right, I bought a box
- 49:39Speaker 2: seat with like seven Nightmare on Elm Streets, Like, don't
- 49:42Speaker 2: worry about a trilogy. But whatever. But that's that is.
- 49:45Speaker 3: Bradley did not win that fight, by the way, Timothy
- 49:47Speaker 3: Bradley did not beat him.
- 49:49Speaker 2: That's right.
- 49:49Speaker 3: I remember at due time. I remember in real time,
- 49:51Speaker 3: Timothy Bradley not win that fight.
- 49:54Speaker 2: Yes, that's in here as well. That and they did
- 49:56Speaker 2: bring up the fact that Timothy Bradley won by decision.
- 49:59Speaker 2: I think, oh split decison, yeah, not unanimous, but still yeah. Yeah.
- 50:04Speaker 2: So you know, Manny is as great as he was,
- 50:06Speaker 2: you know, he was not. It's always it's never not
- 50:10Speaker 2: been a thing where somebody can look at a fight
- 50:12Speaker 2: and go robbery. You know, I don't know enough to say,
- 50:16Speaker 2: you know why it was or what happened or what's
- 50:18Speaker 2: going on behind the scenes, but it is just the
- 50:20Speaker 2: thing that that's always going to be the thing boxing. You know,
- 50:23Speaker 2: there was a remember when there was some hubbub that
- 50:26Speaker 2: we even talked about in the show. I don't know
- 50:28Speaker 2: if it was early this year, last year when they
- 50:29Speaker 2: were talking about AI judges because that was going to
- 50:31Speaker 2: fix boxing. Yeah, that's that's a terrible idea. Never use
- 50:37Speaker 2: AI judges. That's so stupid. But it feels like now
- 50:41Speaker 2: like what happened, Like people were like, wouldn't shut up
- 50:43Speaker 2: about ah Ai scoring AI judges. Maybe there's one fight
- 50:46Speaker 2: with that's actually going to be uh, have the AI
- 50:49Speaker 2: judges be like binding? And now no, just went out
- 50:54Speaker 2: the window. I guess everybody realized that people just wanted
- 50:57Speaker 2: AI for porn and that kind of went everything was
- 51:00Speaker 2: one out the window. Hey man, let's be real. That's
- 51:03Speaker 2: one of these guys talking about you know, they got
- 51:05Speaker 2: AI girlfriends now and they talk to the to the
- 51:08Speaker 2: robot like their their boyfriends or girlfriends. That's what it's
- 51:10Speaker 2: all about. It is very scary, yes, but at the
- 51:14Speaker 2: end of the day, I'd rather people use it for that,
- 51:16Speaker 2: which is what they really wanted, then to bring it
- 51:18Speaker 2: into all these other places like.
- 51:21Speaker 3: I mean with boxing, you need the human element in there.
- 51:24Speaker 3: You need someone to be able to dictate how a
- 51:26Speaker 3: fight is scored and judged. So yeah, we can. We
- 51:30Speaker 3: can't take that away.
- 51:32Speaker 2: Yeah, But heading back to bringing back to Manufacure, one
- 51:36Speaker 2: another thing that I learned about him is just how
- 51:40Speaker 2: he had his fingers and all these other pies. I
- 51:42Speaker 2: guess he'd say he was a politician in the Philippines.
- 51:45Speaker 2: That I know about him, but I didn't know that
- 51:48Speaker 2: he attempted a singing career, that he was in terrible
- 51:50Speaker 2: action movies, I talk a lot about how fighters get
- 51:53Speaker 2: high on their own supply and they're trying to, you know,
- 51:55Speaker 2: do all this other stuff and they get a little
- 51:57Speaker 2: taste of fame. Because another thing they show is that
- 52:01Speaker 2: just how he grew up in like like poverty, Like
- 52:04Speaker 2: that man grew up hungry as a child. Like So
- 52:07Speaker 2: you become a superstar and make a lot of money,
- 52:10Speaker 2: you think, well, I can do absolutely anything, and when
- 52:12Speaker 2: you have enough money, there's not enough people around you
- 52:14Speaker 2: to tell you, no, don't do that.
- 52:16Speaker 3: That's correct.
- 52:17Speaker 2: So that was that was wild to me kind of
- 52:19Speaker 2: seeing all the other stuff we did apart from being
- 52:23Speaker 2: I knew boxing and politician and that's all I knew
- 52:25Speaker 2: that he was involved. But yeah, he's he was doing
- 52:27Speaker 2: like music videos like it was him, actual footage of
- 52:31Speaker 2: him in the recording studio trying to say, like I
- 52:33Speaker 2: can't sing for crap, and I can say many.
- 52:34Speaker 3: You played trying to play basketball.
- 52:37Speaker 2: That's right. They didn't bring in a movie, but I
- 52:39Speaker 2: remember this scene.
- 52:40Speaker 3: That reason why, it's reason why, it's the reason why
- 52:42Speaker 3: they didn't bring that up.
- 52:44Speaker 2: Okay, So.
- 52:46Speaker 3: That's why.
- 52:47Speaker 2: Okay, So I don't follow basketball, you're the box of
- 52:50Speaker 2: basketball fan. Then I need to know how far did
- 52:52Speaker 2: this get? Like what what.
- 52:53Speaker 3: Actually started his own league out there okay, or his
- 52:58Speaker 3: own team in the league whatever, But yeah, he physically
- 53:01Speaker 3: participated in basketball professional league out there in Philippines. Okay,
- 53:06Speaker 3: And like you said, since he was a powerful Norman'll
- 53:08Speaker 3: say nothing.
- 53:10Speaker 2: And so did that like did he just fizzle out?
- 53:13Speaker 2: Did he actually like.
- 53:13Speaker 3: Tried yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah yeah yeah.
- 53:15Speaker 2: Obviously he probably lost a ship out of money on it.
- 53:17Speaker 3: And then just yeah, yeah, that's hilarious.
- 53:21Speaker 2: No, I completely forgot about that. But I didn't know
- 53:25Speaker 2: that that he I just didn't know what it looked like.
- 53:27Speaker 2: Or you know, yeah, I mean the man for all
- 53:31Speaker 2: of his faults and for all of his uh mismanaging
- 53:35Speaker 2: his career and money. You know, like I said, it
- 53:38Speaker 2: was a super star. It was. It's amazing just seeing
- 53:40Speaker 2: footage of the people in the Philippines and when he fought.
- 53:42Speaker 2: Like another thing I knew was that like that whole
- 53:45Speaker 2: place stopped, Like the Philippines just shut down during a
- 53:49Speaker 2: Manu Pacio fight. Yeah, it was really cool seeing like
- 53:52Speaker 2: footage of people watching the fights. You know, there's conflict
- 53:55Speaker 2: there with like separatists and the military, blah blah blah.
- 53:58Speaker 2: Like there they said there is a cease fire during
- 54:00Speaker 2: Manny Pachil fights. People are not shooting, right, So just amazing.
- 54:05Speaker 2: I want to ask you this because my man has
- 54:09Speaker 2: been you know, famous for I guess a couple of decades.
- 54:11Speaker 2: You know, he's coming. He came back recently in the
- 54:14Speaker 2: news and you know, the goal is to get as
- 54:16Speaker 2: many young fans into boxing. I don't know, there's probably
- 54:19Speaker 2: a lot of people that know Manny's name, maybe reputation,
- 54:22Speaker 2: but if they've never actually saw some fight, maybe they
- 54:24Speaker 2: heard that this old man is back this year to
- 54:26Speaker 2: the body of fight. Do you think this documentary gives
- 54:28Speaker 2: a good picture for somebody that does not know this
- 54:30Speaker 2: man is just getting into boxing.
- 54:32Speaker 3: Oh absolutely no, I think it does a very good
- 54:34Speaker 3: job of that. I think it broke down everything the
- 54:37Speaker 3: way it needed to be. It's something that if you
- 54:39Speaker 3: showed a non fight fan, if you showed them, that'd
- 54:42Speaker 3: be very interesting. And they do more research on him.
- 54:44Speaker 3: That's how good it was. It's just it lacks some
- 54:48Speaker 3: context though. I wish it had a couple other parties
- 54:52Speaker 3: to kind of dissect a little bit of some things
- 54:55Speaker 3: that happened. But most part it did pretty well.
- 54:59Speaker 2: I agree. Did There was a jump scare in here
- 55:02Speaker 2: when Marky Mark was one of the interviewees, like, I
- 55:04Speaker 2: know he's a boxing fan and him and Jeremy Piven,
- 55:07Speaker 2: I was like, wow, again.
- 55:09Speaker 3: That's how popular man he was in mid two thousands.
- 55:12Speaker 2: That's fair. I mean, I here's the thing. I I
- 55:16Speaker 2: kind of get why they did it. They got Markey
- 55:18Speaker 2: Mark and Jeremy Piven, one racist and one sex best allegedly,
- 55:22Speaker 2: But yeah, we don't need that. We don't need them
- 55:24Speaker 2: in this. We need more.
- 55:26Speaker 3: You got to remember he wasn't Anti Mayweather. He was
- 55:29Speaker 3: the guy, so you didn't like Floyd. You like Pack.
- 55:32Speaker 3: So if you're not a Floyd Mayweather fan, you were
- 55:34Speaker 3: a Pack fan and then you got more exciting fights
- 55:37Speaker 3: and you know, more knockouts and blah blah blah. So
- 55:41Speaker 3: you know, gravitating towards Pack, you out for various reasons.
- 55:45Speaker 2: Okay, so what's and what's the reason for that? You
- 55:47Speaker 2: know again, I just I love fights. I love watching
- 55:49Speaker 2: the reason why I okay, that's fair. We can we
- 55:54Speaker 2: can make it a little explicit in say of people
- 55:56Speaker 2: don't want to follow black fighter. That's fine. Yeah, uh,
- 56:01Speaker 2: I was wondering if there was more to it than that.
- 56:03Speaker 3: I guess you know, you know what it is.
- 56:06Speaker 2: I get a razor, is something that works.
- 56:08Speaker 3: That's when Floyd went from pre boy Floyd to money
- 56:10Speaker 3: to money Mayweather. And when that change happened, that pissed
- 56:14Speaker 3: off a lot of white people or a lot of
- 56:16Speaker 3: people in general, but especially a lot white people. They
- 56:18Speaker 3: didn't like that. Everything he talked about was money, Mohney,
- 56:21Speaker 3: he had, how much money was getting that That turned
- 56:24Speaker 3: a lot of people off, and they went toward Pakiao,
- 56:26Speaker 3: who was getting taking advantage of by Bob Aaron all
- 56:29Speaker 3: those years. So yeah, but many.
- 56:32Speaker 2: Wasn't white either, So like, what what was the reason?
- 56:34Speaker 2: I guess white? The reason you hold black people so much?
- 56:38Speaker 3: You know, the reason a black guy that's dominant and
- 56:42Speaker 3: bragging about how dominant is while making the most money
- 56:46Speaker 3: athletes can make it a year every year for like
- 56:48Speaker 3: a five year stretch. Yeah, yeah, people are gonna feel
- 56:51Speaker 3: some kind of way that's fair.
- 56:53Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, And I'm not arguing the point obviously,
- 56:56Speaker 2: Like I know that there's a lot of racism, initiative
- 56:58Speaker 2: race in the sport and an infend that's a lot
- 57:00Speaker 2: of what this Why were the Mixed Company podcast? I
- 57:03Speaker 2: was just wondering if there was just other aspects to
- 57:06Speaker 2: it that maybe I missed out on. Okay, Alkham's razors.
- 57:10Speaker 2: Sometimes the simplest answer is the best one, gotcha, gotcha?
- 57:15Speaker 5: No?
- 57:15Speaker 2: I mean, hey, look these both both these guys are
- 57:18Speaker 2: are amazing fighters, and both you know, diserre respect whatever.
- 57:21Speaker 2: And again, whatever Floyd talked about or did outside the ring,
- 57:24Speaker 2: I never gave a shit, Like I never that just
- 57:27Speaker 2: never really like entered into my mindset. I was like,
- 57:30Speaker 2: before that bell rings, nothing matters to me. That's the
- 57:32Speaker 2: kind of fight fan I've always been honestly, And that's what, Uh,
- 57:37Speaker 2: that's part of why I love doing the show, is
- 57:38Speaker 2: just learning so much about the culture around it, you know,
- 57:41Speaker 2: the the audience reaction around it. But yeah, it was
- 57:45Speaker 2: kind of wild. Like, I Floyd comes up in the less,
- 57:49Speaker 2: I kin don't know twenty minutes of this, he just
- 57:51Speaker 2: pops up and I was like, oh, dam, it's like
- 57:53Speaker 2: a special guest star in this thing. Like because again,
- 57:56Speaker 2: you know, this was before that fight. I didn't realize
- 57:58Speaker 2: that it was going to be. Uh, they're going to
- 58:00Speaker 2: bring it into They're gonna factor it into this documentary.
- 58:03Speaker 3: They weren't tied to each other for basically a decade,
- 58:06Speaker 3: from the mid two thousands to when they fought, and
- 58:09Speaker 3: even beyond, they were tied to each other. I would
- 58:12Speaker 3: say from seven to fifteen. You couldn't hear wowing out
- 58:18Speaker 3: the other's name being mentioned.
- 58:21Speaker 2: Yeah, and you mentioned before that that fight was ten
- 58:23Speaker 2: years ago, now that it was late then, so you know,
- 58:26Speaker 2: Brian Pachez was twenty.
- 58:28Speaker 3: Years And the weirdest, the weirdest thing is this, they
- 58:32Speaker 3: both fought the same guys. Both both fought Bosley, both
- 58:38Speaker 3: fight Codo. If I'm not mistaken, both fought Hattan, so
- 58:42Speaker 3: it's like, yeah, that's why it was. The ring around
- 58:44Speaker 3: the Rosie thing was so weird because they all end
- 58:47Speaker 3: up fighting the same guys as some random wort one
- 58:50Speaker 3: way or another.
- 58:51Speaker 2: So yeah, yeah, I guess that was it was inevitable
- 58:57Speaker 2: kas Yeah, yeah, they did be my kids.
- 59:00Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I remember Floyd's came back from retirement
- 59:05Speaker 3: to fight Marquez and pitched the shutout. That's how good
- 59:07Speaker 3: he was in that fight.
- 59:08Speaker 2: So yeah, yep, I do remember that. So yeah, yeah,
- 59:15Speaker 2: I don't know. You know, we're uh, this era of
- 59:17Speaker 2: boxing is very fascinating. It's amazing. You know, you got
- 59:19Speaker 2: two big superstars, two faces of the sport again, two
- 59:22Speaker 2: people that completely transcended just boxing, like it wasn't just
- 59:27Speaker 2: sports fans, and it doesn't. You're right, it doesn't feel
- 59:29Speaker 2: the same today, And I gotta wonder, like, who are
- 59:32Speaker 2: we going to ever see that again? You know, somebody
- 59:34Speaker 2: that just.
- 59:37Speaker 3: There's no one the possibility because star can be born
- 59:39Speaker 3: every day, any day, but we whoever that person is,
- 59:44Speaker 3: they're not currently boxing, if that makes sense. That person
- 59:47Speaker 3: is not yet established in the sport. I don't think
- 59:50Speaker 3: you have a current guy become the guy like that.
- 59:53Speaker 3: It had to be somebody coming out of nowhere becoming
- 59:55Speaker 3: a guy carrying that on and going from there.
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: That's fair.
- 1:00:01Speaker 3: I think Budd was ten years younger. If Bud was
- 1:00:04Speaker 3: twenty thirty eight, toy different discussion. If Earl Spence didn't,
- 1:00:09Speaker 3: you know, have alcohol and driving issues, maybe we have
- 1:00:12Speaker 3: a different conversation. But yeah, nah no.
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: Yeah, that's that's very that's very fairy thing to say.
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: I guess I'll end off on something that's completely ridiculous
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: in a while that you know, we're we're about thirty nine,
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: and if we if we had seen we lived through
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: this era, and you know, this documentary could be a
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: way to introduce if we had our children, our own
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: children to this, we're old enough to get into boxing
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: and learn about this, because I mean, I don't know
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: I'm old enough to have an eighteen year old if
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: I really, I don't have.
- 1:00:47Speaker 3: I have friends that have kids going to college or
- 1:00:51Speaker 3: the same age. So you do the math.
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm like, I'm like, I'm thirty nine, I'm just
- 1:00:55Speaker 2: the kids though, Why would I have another kid myself?
- 1:00:58Speaker 3: Maybe eighteen if you got a kid, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: That's well. So anyway, So for those of you all
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: that are watched like Being Jamison, you know this is
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: you want to introduce your kids to Manypacao. This documentary
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: from twenty fourteen, and we should mention directed by Ryan
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: Moore and Leon Gast and Leon Guest has been on
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: the show before because he directed the When We Were
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: Kings documentary about Muhammed Ali that we've talked about on
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: the show. Also an amazing, amazing the documentary that's available
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: in the Criterion collection. But yeah, this this one, this
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: many one available for free on tub with ads so
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: you don't have to pay for it. And it's definitely
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: recommend if you're interested in an era of boxing that's
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: just about this ner boxing that might come again someday
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: but definitely is not today. In the last let's say
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: like ten years, this era of boxing, it's there's been
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: nothing like it.
- 1:01:49Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: Uh So on the show we rate any films that
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: we talked about at a four gloves Jamison, how would
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: you rate this document.
- 1:01:58Speaker 3: That's a four by the film itself, So it was
- 1:02:00Speaker 3: done well, it was playing well. Uh it would age
- 1:02:04Speaker 3: will also some when I was done ten plus years ago.
- 1:02:06Speaker 3: I'll go to full four just by all the things
- 1:02:09Speaker 3: that took place. It fit the if, fit the need
- 1:02:12Speaker 3: for what it was. If that makes sense.
- 1:02:15Speaker 2: Yep, No, absolutely, there'sn't there. Actually I realized after I
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: picked this one, there's another documentary. I think it's called
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: Manipety Unstop Before. I'm just gonna watch it for fun,
- 1:02:23Speaker 2: just to see. I mean the sure, there's probably a
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: lot of stuff that's gonna be repeated, but yeah, it's
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: just it makes me, uh, just makes you want to
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: learn even more about this guy that you know, we
