- 0:02Welcome to Let's Talk Sister, about life, the whole damn thing.
- 0:06We're Shel and Krissy. We're sisters, and this is where we talk about life
- 0:10as we've lived it, as we're living it, and sometimes where we're still trying to figure it out.
- 0:17We'll talk about family, relationships, love, loss, grief, joy,
- 0:23work, money, spirituality, sexuality, aging, our bodies, and probably a whole
- 0:29bunch of other stuff we haven't even talked about yet.
- 0:33We don't have all the answers, and we're definitely not going to pretend we do.
- 0:37We're just two sisters having real conversation and inviting you to be part of them.
- 0:41So grab your coffee, your wine, or whatever gets you through the day and come hang out with us.
- 0:47Let's talk, sister, about life, the whole damn thing. The other day,
- 0:50Krissy asked me, what do you actually do, Shel, and how do you do it all?
- 0:54And it made me realize that even as sisters, we're built different when it comes to work.
- 1:00Krissy has worked throughout her life, but she's also had the freedom at different
- 1:04times to choose whether or not she wanted to work.
- 1:08I've built a life where I generally love working, but also I love that I created
- 1:13a career that gives me freedom over my time.
- 1:16I get to travel, I can go to Pilates when I want, I can spend time with my family,
- 1:21and I can work early or late from wherever I happen to be.
- 1:26Neither way is better. They're just different. So we thought let's talk about
- 1:30what work means to each of us.
- 1:33So, sis, what is it that you actually do for a living?
- 1:37Yeah, well, I was in corporate America for 14 years as a HR manager,
- 1:41recruiter, training and development manager, director of a community college
- 1:47continuing education adult learning system.
- 1:51And I was the sickest person I knew.
- 1:54I used all my vacation and I was like, this isn't it for me.
- 1:57So I called Turkey Quit My Job and created a business. I called a friend,
- 2:03Jordan Adler, who's a billionaire. And I said, Jordan, what's your VA do?
- 2:08And he said, why? Why do you need to know this? And I said, well,
- 2:11because I'm thinking about doing this.
- 2:13And he said, write me an email with how you can support people. And I was like,
- 2:19I have no clue. So, but I was good at technology from the military and I wrote
- 2:24this email and within a week I had a full load of clients and all those clients
- 2:29then referred me. So I've never had to hustle for clients.
- 2:32So I'm a virtual assistant. It started with just me.
- 2:35And then I had a team of up to 13 people and we're on year 19 of this business.
- 2:40That's nuts. Yep. And we work in Canada, we work in Costa Rica,
- 2:45and we work in the U.S. That's insane.
- 2:49Like I knew you did VA, but I didn't know it was like that big.
- 2:52Yep. Because I know that you're a perpetual student because you have two master's degrees.
- 2:57One bachelor's and master's. Oh, okay. Well, hey, degrees.
- 3:01Plural. And like 500 certifications. I have no degrees and maybe a handful of
- 3:07certifications. Yep. But that's okay. Yeah.
- 3:10And then just in the last year, that has morphed even more, which I,
- 3:14well, no, four years ago, I decided to become a Tony Robbins coach. Do you remember?
- 3:18And so I became a professional coach. I worked for Tony Robbins and I loved,
- 3:23loved it. However, I didn't want to be a salesperson. I wanted to be a coach. Yeah.
- 3:27So I went out on my own and I'm still coaching clients today.
- 3:31I've got, you know, handfuls of clients.
- 3:34And then I went into project management.
- 3:37I went into operations management, international training and development leader.
- 3:43And then just recently I became a state contractors.
- 3:47So I do nonprofit facilitation for nonprofits where I help their board of directors,
- 3:53you know, align with their annual goals and then do some grant administration,
- 3:58that kind of stuff. So I oversee and guide all of that.
- 4:01Wow. Yeah. So cool. So I don't really feel off base when people ask me,
- 4:07what does your sister do?
- 4:08Yeah. I don't know because you do a little bit of everything.
- 4:12Yeah. So if someone were to ask me, I would say I really do operations management
- 4:16all the way from inception to execution. Mm-hmm.
- 4:22Across the board and it's actually not just it's doing the work setting up the
- 4:27work setting up the systems and having a team execute it so we do the work for
- 4:33you so you can do what you love,
- 4:35so you have the grit and the drive and i have none of those because my husband
- 4:41and i own a concrete construction company a great one i'm vice president of
- 4:45that not of operations more of like the financial aspect,
- 4:49and i showed to like sign papers and shit at the bank for like the loans and
- 4:54whatnot but that's really like
- 4:56you know and then oh and then they call me to do shopping which i'm very good
- 5:00at i'm very good at shopping as well so but that like that's that's what i do
- 5:04like that's how i earn like how i earn money
- 5:08is with that that title but my husband like he does all the work.
- 5:12So i'm very very thankful for that yeah of course and i do i do do vacation
- 5:17coverage for our office manager.
- 5:19So I was going to, I thought you were going to say I do vacations.
- 5:21I'm like, give me time. I do vacations too.
- 5:23I do like to vacation very much. It's one of my favorite pastimes.
- 5:28Day drinking is my absolute favorite.
- 5:31Day drinking. Yes. Okay. I love it. I was like, I love it.
- 5:34Hey, if you can have a job description, that's the one to have, right?
- 5:37Yeah, absolutely. Exactly. So, um, yeah. And so I, when I, like I said,
- 5:43I used to have a team of 13 people, because I believe in not doing it all yourself.
- 5:46But when Tosh died, how I healed is I let everyone go.
- 5:51And I worked for nine years, well, eight years all by myself.
- 5:55And I mean, I would say I was a workaholic, really. It's how I healed.
- 6:00You were a workaholic, but you raised your daughter too. Yeah.
- 6:03And I traveled a lot too. Yeah.
- 6:06So, and I would manage to find love and so many great things.
- 6:10So if someone were to ask me like,
- 6:14Not only what do you do, but what I did is I created my dream life. I get to work for myself.
- 6:21I get to serve others. I get to go to Pilates. I get to travel.
- 6:26I get to come podcast with you.
- 6:29I get to pursue education. I love, love, love to learn. I fucking hate it.
- 6:37Like, I like the real world experience. But if you if you want me to take notes
- 6:43or read a book that is not for joy, fuck off. But you're a good student.
- 6:48I'm a terrible student. No, no. You're a perpetual student.
- 6:52I'm a terrible student. Well, when we do our Art of Manifesting, you're a great student.
- 6:58That's because I actually like it. OK, so that's. And it's kind of spiritual.
- 7:02It is spirit. And like like whenever I'm doing spirit work, like it's always
- 7:07like I'm all for it. But like, if it's like here, what's two plus two,
- 7:11it's fucking five. I don't know.
- 7:13You know, you know, it really is good math. Two plus two is five.
- 7:16Yeah, I know. Right. Exactly. So what does freedom look like to you?
- 7:21The ability to not study. Yeah, exactly.
- 7:26No, like I am constantly learning, but it's not, you know, but I do think freedom
- 7:31is the ability to go golf whenever my husband and I want to.
- 7:36Yeah. The ability to day drink and vacation whenever we want to.
- 7:40Like, what does it look like to you?
- 7:42Well, freedom looks like being at 100% of choice.
- 7:46Like I get to choose if I work. I get to choose if I play. I get to choose if
- 7:51I delegate. I get to choose if I own something.
- 7:53And it always works better when I don't hold everything to myself.
- 7:58But you also, like you're so disciplined.
- 8:01Like you know like when you have to do, even if you don't want to do it.
- 8:07Like because then there's me and I'm just like fuck it YOLO.
- 8:10You know? Yeah. But that's where you and I are different. I just don't listen
- 8:13to the small voice that says like, oh, you should lay in bed,
- 8:16you know, 20 more minutes. I literally get up and I put on my exercise clothes and I go.
- 8:21Or, you know, that's just an instance. Or like when I dread work,
- 8:26because sometimes I do dread work. I think I'm human that way.
- 8:29If it's a new project, I procrastinate it. But then I'm like,
- 8:34you know what, just do the damn thing. And once I do it, it was so easy.
- 8:37So it's like, just do it. Here's what a butt cheese I am, for lack of a better word.
- 8:43If my husband needs me to go into the office and I really don't want to,
- 8:46I totally whine to him about it. But I still go in and do it.
- 8:49But I'm a whiner baby. That's okay. You get a whine. So how has your relationship
- 8:55changed with work as you got older?
- 8:57I mean, obviously your day drinking. Not at work. Okay.
- 9:01And, like, whenever I do spirit work, I don't drink. Yeah, that's true.
- 9:04But, yeah, I don't know. I think just the older I get, I'm just like,
- 9:09oh, but, like, my husband and I want to have an exit strategy for,
- 9:12like, five years from now.
- 9:13I don't know if that's feasible because we have 70 families that depend on our
- 9:20business to provide for their families.
- 9:22And we happily do that because, I mean, we love every single one of our guys.
- 9:27Like, if it wasn't for them, we wouldn't be where we are, right?
- 9:30So we try to take care of them to the best of our ability 70 families is a lot
- 9:34it's a lot i mean that's literally like,
- 9:37oh like at least 100 people if not more yeah and just this year i hired someone
- 9:43again so i'm not doing it all myself anymore i've got irma oh you know what
- 9:46we should have her on the podcast yeah we should oh yeah but,
- 9:49irma is fabulous and so she is helping do,
- 9:53i would say a third of the work.
- 9:55And this woman is awesome. She just literally does. I teach her how I answer
- 10:01her questions and then she just does it.
- 10:03And so she's remarkable. Like, godsend.
- 10:06Thank you, Irma. Thank you, Irma. Yes, we love you.
- 10:10So, ooh, if money were not a part of the decision, how would you spend your day?
- 10:18Oh, my gosh. If money weren't a part of it, I mean, I believe that I would still
- 10:23own the business because I built it. But I don't think I would be the person
- 10:27doing the work. I'd oversee and I'd do client work.
- 10:30But then I would literally draw, dance, move, do spirit work,
- 10:36be with you, see, you know, the kids.
- 10:40I i i would travel i think i would
- 10:42do i think i would stress less if money weren't like a factor because i.
- 10:49I'm kevin's a teacher and so we all know teachers what teachers get paid and
- 10:54i know what i get paid and i'm grateful for both of our incomes because it makes
- 10:59one complete package and we're doing just fine so yeah,
- 11:03yeah i i think i answered this question in previous questions like I would if
- 11:09money was not an issue I would golf and day drink yeah oh golfing too me too
- 11:13we got a good golfing in there I love golfing I love,
- 11:16I'm not good at it like I suck but I have fun that's the only place you could drink and drive.
- 11:21And not get in trouble I mean unless you break a heart it's so funny when we
- 11:27golf it's so funny we don't drink when we golf I do yeah I should try it yeah
- 11:31it's it's might make it more relaxing you know I'll tell you what I I hit the ball better,
- 11:37when I have some liquid courage because for whatever reason that tiny little
- 11:41ball and that big little tiny big ass whatever t,
- 11:45it intimidates me because I'm like you know I'm always yelling at it to like go to the hole,
- 11:52go to the hole go to the hole ball and and I talked to my driver and my driver
- 11:56and I have like a you know because like my goal my goal to the at the end of
- 12:00this season is to be able to drive the ball 200 yards.
- 12:04I got into 185, but,
- 12:07Oh, I'm going to get there. Is that in the swing or the muscle?
- 12:11I have no fucking idea. Yeah, I don't know. Some golf expert,
- 12:14if you're listening to this, come on in and answer. My husband says it's in
- 12:17the hips. And I'm like, I got your hips hanging, pal. Yeah.
- 12:21Yeah. You can see Matt moving my hips right now. Yeah, but there's because like
- 12:27you have the back swing and then the downward motion. And then like in the middle,
- 12:31like when you get to shoulder, you're supposed to like really turn the power up.
- 12:35I my brain does not work like that oh that's interesting yeah I don't know if
- 12:38mine works that way either yeah so golfing so,
- 12:41I when I got my master's I had a goal when I got my master's I was going to
- 12:44learn to golf well I got that master's a long time ago and I never I was so
- 12:48busy working raising kids that I just didn't golf
- 12:52and when I met Kevin he's like do golf I'm like no but that's a goal of mine
- 12:56so he bought me golf clubs without me ever going and he's like we're going and so he bought me,
- 13:02he actually bought me golf shoes and golf clubs and a little glove thing i look
- 13:07so cute i know it's all in the outfit too it's all in the outfit for sure so we went golfing and i,
- 13:14love it and then danelle started golfing she did yeah she's actually very good
- 13:19she went with us when i learned to golf quite a few times do,
- 13:22you know what like i don't understand with these kids today like kaylani can
- 13:27get up to the golf ball like because she goes too i never thought you a golf
- 13:30ball she does she can drive that ball.
- 13:34I don't like two 230 easy and i'm just like how how do you do that i don't know
- 13:40i was like i don't know we're gonna have to be like you show me and i think
- 13:44jesse i watched him one time and he drove the ball,
- 13:48i think over 300 yards straight as an arrow we were at the mad russian golf course it was nuts,
- 13:55what's your favorite golf course you've ever golfed at.
- 13:58I'd have to say the Wailia Golf Course in Hawaii. Hawaii's on my list. Yeah, in Maui.
- 14:05Maui's on my list. You know I have a dream home there, right? No.
- 14:09Oh, my gosh. I'll show you a picture of it. It's on, like, a little peninsula
- 14:12of some sort, and I think it's the Rich Person Peninsula, and I have to buy
- 14:17it. Okay, well, have fun with that.
- 14:20It's, like, millions of dollars. Yeah. You know, hey, millions of dollars could
- 14:25drop in my lap right now. Someone could be like, this girl needs this house.
- 14:29You know what I'm going to use it for?
- 14:30Retreats. Yeah. We're going to do retreats there. It's going to be our one place
- 14:34that we do retreats and we're going to change so many lives.
- 14:37Yep. So she's throwing that out there, folks.
- 14:40Manifesting the home in Million Dollar Peninsula in Hawaii. Million Dollar Maui.
- 14:45Yep. Million Dollar Maui. Okay. So that, you know, that's actually why I work
- 14:49actually is dreams and goals. Like I've manifested so many things in my life because I can.
- 14:57Yep. Because why not? I'm a great manifester. You are a great manifester. I am. So work.
- 15:01Can I imagine life without work? Absolutely. Absolutely.
- 15:06As long as we can pay our bills and have a happy life, like,
- 15:11I don't need any more things. I have, I mean, I will probably always have more
- 15:15things like books and clothes. Let's be, let's be clear.
- 15:19But I really have everything I need. Mm-hmm.
- 15:23Me too. Yeah. And then some. Yeah, me too. Very blessed. Yeah.
- 15:27Yeah. So it's not about the hustle for me anymore. It's about the being.
- 15:30Yeah. Yep. And I'd like to do more of that with my hubby. Yep.
- 15:34And you and our extended family. Mm-hmm. Yep.
- 15:38So with that, that's our view on work and make work fun. Because when it sucks,
- 15:45it's not good for anyone, house and home. Or you can be like me and just don't
- 15:49work. Yeah. That works too. Yeah.
- 15:51Yeah. I'm like. I work at not working. Yeah, I love it.
- 15:54I'm all for it, actually. So with that, we're going to sign up.
- 15:58And if you would join us at Let's Talk Sister dot com.
- 16:02We're just two sisters sharing life as we've lived it, as we are living it.
- 16:08And sometimes as we're still trying to figure the hell out.
- 16:11But this isn't just our conversation. We want you in it, too.
- 16:15Share your stories with us. Tell us what you're going through.
- 16:18Ask us questions or give us something you think sisters need to talk about.
