Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Southbound I-5 at the Rose Quarter is scheduled to close for five weeks uninterrupted.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: Five weeks.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Now, if you're trying to think of how that's going to affect you, if you commute at all, it is going to affect you because it's not just I-5.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: It's gonna spill onto 84, 205, 405.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: I mean, it just goes on and on.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: At some point, people have to commute.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: And that that's just not working great when the biggest road, the biggest street, the biggest freeway we have in the state of Oregon is Interstate 5, and having it closed for five straight weeks is not ideal.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: All right, welcome into the PNW podcast.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: I'm Drew Tiedeman, and we are here at the Stafford Hills Club, as we always are, where work meets play.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Uh, you've got these beautiful suites up here, and you can rent them out by the hour, or you can be here all the time like I am.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: And it's so nice to be this close to all of the amenities, whether it's the workout rooms, you've got the cycling right outside the door here, um, whether it's Pilates, yoga, um, and so much cool stuff going on with Studio X and all of the high rock stuff that's being done at Stafford Hills Club is next level.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: And of course, voted the best health and wellness facility in the Portland area, and for good reason, check them out today at Staffordhills.com.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: Tell them Drew sent you for half-op your initiation.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: Now, a lot to get to today, and I am flying solo today, uh, which is a little bit weird, something I prefer to have somebody in the room all the time, but it's Marcus's birthday today, so he gets a reprieve.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: And of course, it's Labor Day.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: And what does that mean?
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: Labor Day means that um nobody else wants to work either.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: I actually was trying to tap into some other people to come and co-host with me, and some were just not doing the labor thing today, and some straight up just too hung over on a couch to move.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: So I can respect that.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: You do your thing, and of course, it was the beginning of college football.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: We'll have to break down what happened with all of the teams in the Northwest here.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: But in the meantime, there is so much more going on.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: And the one that's really everyone's got it circled this coming Friday, September 11th at 10 p.m., it's going to be quite the situation as southbound I-5 at the Rose Quarter is scheduled to close for five weeks uninterrupted.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: Five weeks.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: Now, if you're trying to think of how that's going to affect you if you commute at all, it is going to affect you because it's not just I-5.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: It's going to spill onto 84, 205, 405.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: I mean, it just goes on and on.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: At some point, people have to commute.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: And that that's just not working great when the biggest road, the biggest street, the biggest freeway we have in the state of Oregon is Interstate 5, and having it closed for five straight weeks is not ideal.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: Now, they're saying when when we talk to Odot that you can expect your drive time to be two to three times longer than normal.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: Which you're like, okay, that's not that big a deal.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: It's not that big a deal if you commute for 10 minutes or 15 minutes, but if say you do an hour already each way, that's two hours.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: Well, now that becomes three hours each way.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: You're going to commute for six hours to go to an eight-hour shift.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: I mean, I think there's going to be a lot of sick calls during that time.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: And, you know, quite frankly, I don't know what the employees' employers are going to do.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: You know, are they going to let people work from home?
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: Are they going to try and shift the hours to an earlier time or a later time so you miss all of that intensity?
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: I really don't know.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: But it's going to be a massive headache.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: And when you tie that into the fact that kids are fresh back at school, you know, my kids don't go back until tomorrow, which anytime you change the way somebody's routine goes and you add a massive caveat like I-5 is closed, expect a headache, a constant headache for over a month, too.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: And now, granted, I'm glad that they're getting all this done before you get into the the heat of blazer season.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: Any of us who head I-5 south from the motor center, once you get to the freeway and you get through all of the congestion, you're pretty much easy street.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: You're gone.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: But you're not now.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: You try and go through there whatsoever.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: It's just, I don't even know what it's going to look like and what kind of wasteland we're going to have.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: So in the meantime, I would start giving yourself plenty more time to get going.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: Um, because whether you're leaving for work at 5 a.m.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: or you just have to have a boss who's gonna have to realize you're gonna be late, it's gonna change your whole situation.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: And if you're doing three hours each way, you're a better person than I am because I can't handle it.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: You know, I can barely handle the few-minute commute that I did from my work all the years that I did it.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: For 10 straight years, I commuted the same way, but I had free rights, like a free ride onto the freeway, and then a free right off of the freeway that would wrap around free right, free right, free right all the way to work.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: I commuted for nine minutes.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: And if there was any traffic, I was just bewildered and blown away.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: Now I I know that other people are more conditioned to it than I was, but still not ideal.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: So my hat goes off to those of you who are gonna grind it out coming this Friday.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: But just remember, you do get one more week because it's not gonna happen until 10 p.m.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: on Friday, September 11th.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: But Godspeed, you're gonna need uh a little bit of extra patience coming into this one.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: And so many of us have had extra patience as we've been grinding it out with our kids all summer long.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: And I'm one of those people who will tell you, I'm ready for them to go back.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: And do I enjoy hanging out with my kids?
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: I absolutely do.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: But when they're off at 2 45 or 3 o'clock, you still got plenty of time to hang with them.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: It's this whole summer thing, and I remember being a kid in the summer and my my parents always being like, You've got to have something to do.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: You've got to get a job, you gotta do something, because I just wanted to kick it.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: I just wanted to hang out.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: But now that I see my kids do that, it is obnoxious.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: They start every morning with like, oh, so what are we what are we gonna do today?
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: What are we gonna do today?
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: Why don't you be a kid for a second?
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: And you know, everybody wants they want the screen time, they want the pad, they want your phone, they and if those things don't work, they actually television is the third rung of that because they can't just doom scroll on the television because they don't have control of the situation quite like they would on a tablet or on your phone.
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: But it it builds a nightmare.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: Anybody with a kid knows that if you give your kid a pad in the morning time or before they've accomplished other goals in the day, when you take it away, you have unleashed a wild animal.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: And that's not exclusive to my kids.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: I've seen fifty different kids lose their mind over losing the pad, but it's it's the same thing every time.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: As soon as you tell them to put it down, it's on board.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: W what are we gonna do?
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: I I don't know.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: Well when I was a kid growing up, and I know it sounds like some get off my lawn stuff, but we didn't have any pads.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: There were no smartphones.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: Kids and an imagination, yeah, that's a big word for you to look up.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: Seeing how you haven't read all summer, you might not know what the word means.
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: I mean, quite frankly, there are stretches of time during the summer, and I'm not I'm not willing to call myself a bad father.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: I'll tell you that this is just kind of what happens when you're busy and they're not busy, is they want to be on that thing all the time.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: And as soon as it's taken away, they're a nightmare.
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: And if you don't give it to them at all, they're just like, I'm bored, I'm bored.
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: Boredom leads to creativity.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: That is 100% the deal.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: So when you ask people like, oh, are you do you feel uncomfortable with the fact that you're happier when your kids are at school?
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: I would liken your relationship with your kids when they get to a certain age, when they're little until they're about four or five years old, they really need you to be there every step of the way in order to kind of build them into the human being that you hope that they become.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: But I'll tell you straight up that it's just like with your spouse.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: Like if you and your wife or your husband or whoever, if if you are together all the time, it can become contentious.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: If you separate from each other for a hot second, when you come back together, even for a couple hours during a work day, or you do this and I do that, it's healthy to be apart so you can be together later.
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: And I feel like that's the same thing with their kids.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: My kids, while I'm there right in their grill, now that I do a lot of my work from home, I hundred percent guarantee you that they're not super stoked to see me.
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: Now, if they don't see me for a bit, they are.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: You know, I went down to the duck game, and my youngest, who's not quite three years old, didn't have a ticket, so she stayed with my mom.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: When we got back to pick her up, she was so excited to see us.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: And, you know, I was pretty excited to see her too.
- 9:56SPEAKER_00: You're not like, oh god, here we go again.
- 9:59SPEAKER_00: But school's gonna change it.
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: And, you know, you're gonna drop off your kids and you're gonna be super happy.
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: You're also, it's weird at first.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: It's the same thing when Amy and the girls leave town and I get about five minutes in, and then I'm bored because I'm used to the noise and the action.
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: You know that little yellow um warning sign that pops up on your smartwatch and your Apple Watch when when the noise is so loud and aggressive that it tells you you're gonna have ear damage if this continues for 30 or or more minutes.
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: That goes off every day at my house on my watch, which is, you know, less than a foot from my ear.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: So, you know, I love my kids just as much or more than the next guy.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: I can promise you that.
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: I would fight to the ends of the earth to keep them safe, but I will also be the first one to drop them off, come tomorrow morning, and enjoy a little freedom.
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's a lot of the things, it's being able to get back into your workout routine or any of the things that help with your mental health.
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: You kind of have to put all that on the backseat when they're around.
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: Um, so them heading back to school, it's kind of like parental independence day.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: And it scares me because less and less people are having kids these days, and it's just a fact.
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: Portland Public Schools have talked about closing upwards of 60 schools.
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: You know, the same thing happened when I was a kid.
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: There was, I think, five or six schools that fed into the middle school where I grew up, and by the time I had headed off to college, two of those were closed because people grew up, and then that next generation did not just hop in line and make more kids.
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: So we'll see what happens with the future of schools.
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: It's just probably gonna be a more consolidated group.
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: And I don't know what we're doing for population long term because uh we're gonna have a lot more free space around here if we don't start making kids, and younger people don't seem to care about whether or not they have kids, so that's interesting.
- 11:59SPEAKER_00: You know, my girls, though, they went to the Oregon football game against Boise State over the weekend, and for Oregon and Oregon State, it was a bit of an eye-opener for what you're going to be looking at moving into this coming season.
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: But uh, it was like the football gods did what they always do, and that it never rains at Hodson Stadium.
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: And that was true yesterday.
- 12:23SPEAKER_00: Even driving into town, there were black clouds everywhere, but I just knew something about it, it was gonna free up.
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: Now, that wasn't the end of the storm for number two Oregon, as they they ran into a buzzsaw with Boise State.
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: Boise State came out light and ready to crush, and that's exactly what they did, and they were holding a 17-7 halftime lead.
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: And normally at halftime, I like to run around and go see my friends, head down to the Mishowski Center, maybe have a couple of cold pops, but I was just juiced on it.
- 12:55SPEAKER_00: I could not get my head out of the fact that we might just blow this thing straight away.
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: And that felt very Oregon-esque.
- 13:03SPEAKER_00: That our highest rank in the history of the Oregon Ducks coming in, and it could have just been washed away right there.
- 13:11SPEAKER_00: Boise State, they were even doing the shout song.
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: And now, for people who aren't from around here, the at the end of the third quarter, they sing shout, come on now, down and shout, come on now, whoa, and everybody has a good old time.
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: Well, you look at Boise State, they took something right out of the Oregon playbook and they were dancing, and maybe they were dancing because Oregon had 10 penalties in the first half and kind of looked a little bit lethargic.
- 13:42SPEAKER_00: And there was, I heard rumblings around where people were like, I don't know if Dante Moore has the ability.
- 13:48SPEAKER_00: Does he have the killer instinct to come back and win games?
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: And it didn't look like he all by himself was separating them from Boise State in this comeback attempt.
- 13:59SPEAKER_00: Um, but give the guy some credit.
- 14:02SPEAKER_00: He threw for 378 yards, three touchdowns, and Oregon finished with three yards short of 500 total offensive yards.
- 14:12SPEAKER_00: And you don't even have to be a football guy to know how big time that is.
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: So, really, what was it?
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: Is it that Oregon just isn't as good as they'd been preseason advertised, or is Boise State better than people thought they were?
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: Now you remember just two years ago, Oregon has to get a last second field goal just to knock off Boise State.
- 14:36SPEAKER_00: So it was never lost on me.
- 14:38SPEAKER_00: You were never gonna see any of my money take the ducks to win by nearly four touchdowns, because that's a good way to just throw your bank account into the wood chipper.
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: But Oregon does have a lot of things to work on.
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: And now, granted, not nearly as much as Oregon State does, I will say Oregon State looked better than they did uh before.
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: Now, let's just back up one sec.
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: Oregon will head to Oklahoma State next weekend and be ready for an early one.
- 15:07SPEAKER_00: This one starts at 9 a.m.
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: Pacific, and that's something for you to keep in mind.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: If you're a fan of the Big Ten or a team in the Big Ten, whether it's Washington, Oregon, USC, UCLA, and you're out here on the West Coast, anytime we travel across the country, you're gonna be looking at some of those starts at nine in the morning, which is lame for me.
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: I like to make it an event.
- 15:31SPEAKER_00: I like to make it a good old time.
- 15:33SPEAKER_00: And it's hard for me to whip out the chips and dips and and start barbecuing that early in the morning.
- 15:39SPEAKER_00: If we're tailgating, that's different.
- 15:41SPEAKER_00: Rules are completely off.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: I mean, you're allowed to have yourself a cold beverage at that hour, but when I if I crack a hard seltzer at 9 a.m., even during a duck game, you can feel a side eye.
- 15:55SPEAKER_00: And even if they're not physically looking at you, somebody out there somewhere is judging you.
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: But Oregon State, I gotta give them a little bit of credit.
- 16:03SPEAKER_00: They battled back against Houston in an attempt to uh to get that victory yesterday.
- 16:10SPEAKER_00: They end up losing the game 33 to 20, but their quarterback, this brand new transfer quarterback, Braden Atkinson, threw for 376 yards, and they have a freshman receiver uh named Jesse LeGray who exploded for 136 receiving yards and a touchdown.
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: That's pretty awesome.
- 16:31SPEAKER_00: And it and that could be the kind of connection that can work for them down the road.
- 16:35SPEAKER_00: And let's not forget, Houston was a ranked team.
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: So that's some good news for them there.
- 16:41SPEAKER_00: Uh Oregon State got within 26 to 20 in the fourth quarter before they finally did pull away and get the job done winning 33 to 20.
- 16:52SPEAKER_00: I do have to say though, don't count them out.
- 16:54SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm a little bummed that Oregon and Oregon State won't play later in the year.
- 16:59SPEAKER_00: You look at it um from the perspective of Washington and Washington State, the Apple Cup yesterday, 118th meeting for them.
- 17:08SPEAKER_00: 118.
- 17:10SPEAKER_00: That's a storied history right there.
- 17:12SPEAKER_00: Now, Washington does control that narrative over time, but it's not as lopsided as you would think.
- 17:20SPEAKER_00: You would think they'd won 90% of those games the way that history kind of remembers it.
- 17:24SPEAKER_00: But Washington State and Washington are a lot like Oregon State and Oregon in the fact that when they come together, whoever's in little brother mode, normally Washington State, Oregon State, they fight up and they they treat it like a bowl game.
- 17:40SPEAKER_00: It is never safe when you play against your rival, even to open the season, which is seeming to be the deal now.
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: I mean, I had a chance to talk to Rob Mullins for a few minutes, uh the athletic director at the University of Oregon, and he has made a pledge to try and get Oregon State on the schedule moving forward.
- 18:01SPEAKER_00: Now, it just didn't make sense, or it didn't work.
- 18:03SPEAKER_00: It just wasn't going to work this year, but there is an effort to get that done moving forward.
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: This episode brought to you by Motorsport Hillsboro, your one-stop shop for everything when it comes to dirt bikes, street bikes, side-by-sides, e-assist, mountain bikes, and so much more.
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: Save thousands right now on a gas-gas e-bike.
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: These things are epic.
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: These electric mountain bikes are pedal assists, but they'll take you longer, farther, and higher than you've ever gone.
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: I mean, some of the things that you see people do on these, they'll take you down a trail that you would have been gassed, gas-gassed long ago.
- 18:44SPEAKER_00: And of course, the easiest and best financing for you right there at Motosport Hillsborough, where they make sure to get the job done for you and to do in a way that you leave feeling good so you can hit the trails and let that wind burn through your hair and maybe catch a little dirt in your teeth while you're at it.
- 19:01SPEAKER_00: MotosportHillsboro.com.
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: Also brought to you by Axiom, Plumbing, Sewer, and Septic, everything water and waste, they'll take care of you.
- 19:10SPEAKER_00: And of course, my buddy Bruce is born and raised in the Portland area.
- 19:14SPEAKER_00: Not private equity.
- 19:15SPEAKER_00: He takes care of his people too.
- 19:17SPEAKER_00: I tell him Drew sent you for 10% off your first purchase and also$500 off a water heater if you need one of those.
- 19:26SPEAKER_00: And as we head into the fall months, it's gonna be needed for you to get on board and maybe stay warm in the shower unless you're ready for a cold plunge every single time you get in there.
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: Uh, so hit him up today, axiompdx.com.
- 19:40SPEAKER_00: And of course, the Stafford Hills Club, these are my people, voted the number one health and wellness facility in the Portland area, and you've got to come down and see them.
- 19:50SPEAKER_00: They got everything you need from workout facilities to the saltwater pool and classes, classes, classes, classes with the best instructors.
- 19:59SPEAKER_00: And just the community here is next level.
- 20:02SPEAKER_00: I talk about it all the time, but I truly love it and they care about the people who walk in this door.
- 20:07SPEAKER_00: If you want to be a part of it, Staffordhills.com.
- 20:10SPEAKER_00: Tell them Drew sent you for half off your initiation.
- 20:13SPEAKER_00: All right, I don't know if I could call this bigger than Burger Week, but it's a big deal.
- 20:18SPEAKER_00: Now, when Portland had its Burger Week, I was poised to go off.
- 20:23SPEAKER_00: I was gonna go gangbusters and hit up five different places, but of course, I had what they're calling, quote unquote, a cardiac event, and I haven't even had caffeine since all that went down, just trying to watch out for my little sputtering heart.
- 20:38SPEAKER_00: Uh, but I figured Burger Week was gonna be a little bit of overkill for me to go and uh crush a bunch of smashies when when they told me that I should watch my diet and keep that exercise up a notch.
- 20:50SPEAKER_00: Um, but what we've got here to me is a bigger deal than Burger Week.
- 20:56SPEAKER_00: And I when I had Burger Boy John on, I told you about having an eight-burger weekend in Las Vegas and nearly getting myself in the hospital like because I was so waterlogged.
- 21:07SPEAKER_00: And I'm not joking, I gained a bunch of weight of straight water.
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: My ankles were pouring over my shoes.
- 21:13SPEAKER_00: Like I thought that my organs were failing, and really I was just so salted from all of those burgers.
- 21:20SPEAKER_00: But without further ado, coming to the Portland area, it is fried chicken week in Portland starting next week, September 14th through the 20th.
- 21:30SPEAKER_00: Participating restaurants are gonna be having$10 fried chicken dishes.
- 21:35SPEAKER_00: Now, that's a pretty wide idea, fried chicken, because it's not just like a KFC style, you know, like bucket of chicken that you're gonna get.
- 21:45SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's everything from wings to, of course, fried chicken or fried chicken sandwiches, breasts, thighs, all the good stuff.
- 21:55SPEAKER_00: So I'm excited to hit up some of this stuff.
- 21:58SPEAKER_00: Now Burger Week has.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: One um that was at Augitram right down the street from my house.
- 22:04SPEAKER_00: I didn't see them on the list, which is a bummer to me, uh, because they make a pretty epic chicken sandwich over there, and maybe it's already established.
- 22:15SPEAKER_00: Um, but when you look at it here, I mean you've got some good stuff.
- 22:19SPEAKER_00: Um, Misa and Thai has the zob wings, crispy fried chicken wings with Thai Tom Yum seasoning.
- 22:27SPEAKER_00: Uh Migration Brewing has a good one.
- 22:30SPEAKER_00: A crispy fried chicken sandwich with pickles, cabbage slaw, hot honey mustard, and red pepper sauce with waffle fries.
- 22:38SPEAKER_00: That might be my jam right there.
- 22:40SPEAKER_00: Um, and that's at one of their locations.
- 22:42SPEAKER_00: At the other location on Gleason, Uber chicken.
- 22:46SPEAKER_00: That's chicken schnitzel, braised red cabbage, curry mustard, and pickles.
- 22:51SPEAKER_00: If you've never had chicken schnitzel, you're missing out on something.
- 22:54SPEAKER_00: It is the schnitzel.
- 22:56SPEAKER_00: I'll tell you that right now.
- 22:58SPEAKER_00: I um been to Germany, ate chicken schnitzel just about every single day.
- 23:03SPEAKER_00: When the Rhinelander was here in town, rest in peace, that was one of my favorite places.
- 23:09SPEAKER_00: But there are so many good places to go.
- 23:12SPEAKER_00: Um, exotic egg rolls has their signature wet lemon pepper wings.
- 23:17SPEAKER_00: Um Kow Cow PDX has crispy ginger chicken with ginger scallion relish and pickled onion.
- 23:24SPEAKER_00: I think this is a good opportunity for you.
- 23:27SPEAKER_00: If you haven't tried one of these places before, you can get in at a good price point.
- 23:31SPEAKER_00: It's not necessarily gonna fill you up by just having that one item, but it will teach you something about these restaurants.
- 23:39SPEAKER_00: And moving forward, maybe it becomes one of your favorites.
- 23:42SPEAKER_00: You know, for me, you know, it's a it's different things.
- 23:45SPEAKER_00: I do love a crispy chicken sandwich.
- 23:49SPEAKER_00: I prefer the chicken thigh, I'll eat the breast, but that chicken thigh has a natural juiciness to it that is hard to screw up.
- 23:56SPEAKER_00: It's the darker meat.
- 23:58SPEAKER_00: The only problem with the chicken thigh sandwich is sometimes you can get robbed on size of chicken chunk, if that makes sense.
- 24:06SPEAKER_00: A chicken breast is almost always going to be enough for you, but if it's made too thick, you find yourself working through the chicken breast, whereas like you're almost having the flavor of a rotisserie chicken that you bought at a grocery store.
- 24:21SPEAKER_00: And is that really what you're doing?
- 24:23SPEAKER_00: And is it crispy skin that you like?
- 24:25SPEAKER_00: Is it juicy meat?
- 24:26SPEAKER_00: It's the seasoning, the brine, hot sauce.
- 24:30SPEAKER_00: I will just say it straight up.
- 24:32SPEAKER_00: I like a little bit of spice, a little bit of flavor in my crispy chicken sandwich.
- 24:37SPEAKER_00: But don't, don't, don't just cook up the chicken and then toss it in like Frank's red hot.
- 24:44SPEAKER_00: Or, or just some sloppy red sauce and be like, oh, well, that's what gives it the that's what gives it the pizzazz.
- 24:51SPEAKER_00: No, it doesn't.
- 24:52SPEAKER_00: If you want to have an epic chicken sandwich, put that flavor in the chicken breading that you cook it in, and that way it gives you that pop, and then you can have a hot honey or a house sauce.
- 25:04SPEAKER_00: But there's nothing that disappoints me more than when I come in, I'm ready to rock.
- 25:10SPEAKER_00: I order a chicken sando, they're like, ooh, do you want to do the spicy?
- 25:13SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, yeah, I want to do the spicy.
- 25:15SPEAKER_00: And then it shows up and it's red and wet.
- 25:18SPEAKER_00: And it's like, honestly, a$3 bottle of Franks doing this with my eyes closed would would suffice for that.
- 25:25SPEAKER_00: It's not why I go to a restaurant.
- 25:27SPEAKER_00: That's all I'm saying.
- 25:29SPEAKER_00: I could be in the minority there.
- 25:31SPEAKER_00: And that's when they're saying, Nashville hot, Nashville hot depends on how you do it.
- 25:36SPEAKER_00: But I will say I'm dark meat.
- 25:38SPEAKER_00: I'm dark meat all day long, baby.
- 25:40SPEAKER_00: And when it comes to bone-in, chicken, and sandwiches, I feel like they're two very different lanes.
- 25:48SPEAKER_00: I can appreciate that they're willing to bring this list together and have fried chicken week be like a spectrum of things.
- 25:56SPEAKER_00: But I'm if I'm getting the sandwich, I want it the thigh, I want the seasoning in the breading.
- 26:02SPEAKER_00: But when it comes to a wing, I'll take bone in all day.
- 26:06SPEAKER_00: Love a bone-in wing.
- 26:08SPEAKER_00: And any of my friends, they'll tell you, I like my wings slightly dried.
- 26:13SPEAKER_00: So if I order wings, I actually want to kind of separate them and give them a minute or two to kind of dry that sauce onto the wing.
- 26:24SPEAKER_00: Because of course, I I will allow a saucing on a wing, whereas in it's a party foul on a sandwich.
- 26:31SPEAKER_00: But if you dry it up a little bit, there's nothing worse than a wet wing.
- 26:35SPEAKER_00: A wet wing makes it feel like you you took that chicken out of a frozen bag.
- 26:40SPEAKER_00: And I wouldn't serve that to my friends at gunpoint.
- 26:43SPEAKER_00: It's gonna be honest with you.
- 26:45SPEAKER_00: And food's my love language.
- 26:47SPEAKER_00: You come to my house, we cook it up.
- 26:50SPEAKER_00: We don't ever mail in.
- 26:52SPEAKER_00: If you are our guest, we are going to make every effort to make you love your food.
- 26:57SPEAKER_00: If you don't, that's fine.
- 26:58SPEAKER_00: But you'll know we put in maximum effort because nothing shows love like a quality home cooked meal.
- 27:06SPEAKER_00: Now, before we go, I did want to uh talk about this for a second, because this is kind of funny to me, and that is um Costco, of course, started in Seattle, Washington.
- 27:16SPEAKER_00: It's now everywhere.
- 27:17SPEAKER_00: You'll find it all over the place, Canada, Hawaii, it's in other countries.
- 27:22SPEAKER_00: Um, but there's something about Costco.
- 27:26SPEAKER_00: There's a bunch of unwritten rules that are kind of going viral about the place.
- 27:29SPEAKER_00: I feel like there's so much more to it.
- 27:31SPEAKER_00: Um now, one of uh those rules is don't stop your cart in the middle of the aisle.
- 27:36SPEAKER_00: I will go a little farther and I'll say you also don't park your cart in the middle of the aisle because you're you're screwing up the flow of traffic.
- 27:45SPEAKER_00: You're also screwing up the flow of traffic if you don't go the right way.
- 27:50SPEAKER_00: It's it's like a track and track and field.
- 27:52SPEAKER_00: It's like a freeway.
- 27:53SPEAKER_00: You don't you don't go up the other side of the freeway because it looks like a little bit clearer to you right now, because I promise you it's going to be a complete cluster when you come up the wrong end.
- 28:04SPEAKER_00: So say you come into the Costco that starts left to right, and and they are flipped, even here in town.
- 28:10SPEAKER_00: This isn't like an England versus America thing.
- 28:13SPEAKER_00: Some of them are backwards, some of them are straight up.
- 28:17SPEAKER_00: But to me, straight up is you start on the left, and that's where the hard item goods are: your batteries, your blenders, your microwaves, your things like that.
- 28:26SPEAKER_00: Clothes are in the middle, foods on the right, alcohol's in the back.
- 28:30SPEAKER_00: Start left, work your way around the horn.
- 28:34SPEAKER_00: Now, normally what I do is I come all the way up the left side, and then I cross over to the middle, and there's kind of like that three or four rows of there's kids' toys, but then there's like man goods, camping, survival, you know, all these little things you don't even realize you need.
- 28:50SPEAKER_00: And I kind of go through that section, and then I kind of work my way back, go through rotisserie chicken land, decide whether you need a$5 bird, come around, and then shoot it all the way down Main Street, which is where the food are, back and forth, back and forth, back and forth.
- 29:05SPEAKER_00: Hit as many samples as you can along the way, be respectful, but make sure you get a sample.
- 29:11SPEAKER_00: The people who decide to come in, I don't know if they're stopping at the bathroom or they, oh yeah, I just forgot I need to get my vitamins, and then they just want to go right up against the giraffe there.
- 29:23SPEAKER_00: I mean, they'll come, it's like they're swimming up a river, and you know, some of them are saying, excuse me, or whatever, but that is just jackass behavior.
- 29:32SPEAKER_00: Come around the outside, go with the flow of traffic, and it will set you free.
- 29:38SPEAKER_00: Otherwise, you're just an absolute rookie, and somebody should take a pair of scissors and slice your card right in half.
- 29:45SPEAKER_00: Rule number two, if there's a free sample, you take it.
- 29:49SPEAKER_00: Now, I agree with that, but I also have been to Costco a couple hundred thousand times.
- 29:56SPEAKER_00: And there's certain there's certain things you you know you don't like.
- 29:59SPEAKER_00: And if you go all the time, I can tell from a distance.
- 30:03SPEAKER_00: I can tell by where you're strategically placed if it's going to be something I want.
- 30:09SPEAKER_00: Like I know where the yogurt melts are, and I know I don't like them.
- 30:13SPEAKER_00: So I'm I'm not gonna grab a sample just to grab a sample.
- 30:17SPEAKER_00: But I will say this also is part of the business model is if you don't get the samples and they're not going through the product, then it doesn't appear to those who have hired them to be there that they're productive.
- 30:30SPEAKER_00: So if they're asking you to take a sample, take a sample.
- 30:35SPEAKER_00: And if you like it, then getting that food item while they're there also helps them.
- 30:41SPEAKER_00: And if you know anything about what happened during the pandemic, you absolutely do not want a day without samples at Costco.
- 30:49SPEAKER_00: My kids love Costco almost as much as I do.
- 30:52SPEAKER_00: They haven't been around long enough to know, you know, exactly what it is to eat, sleep, and breathe Costco.
- 30:59SPEAKER_00: But they love samples.
- 31:00SPEAKER_00: And when they took them away during the pandemic, it was like someone had kicked their dog.
- 31:05SPEAKER_00: It's just it changes the whole experience.
- 31:08SPEAKER_00: And it's the one place of all places that if I say, hey, I'm gonna roll to Costco, my kids want to go.
- 31:14SPEAKER_00: A, samples.
- 31:16SPEAKER_00: B cheapest ice cream sundaes in America,$1.50 hot dog is one of the most classic menu items, not just at Costco, but across this fine land.
- 31:29SPEAKER_00: You will not find a better deal.
- 31:31SPEAKER_00: Anyone else would go out of business trying to serve a hot dog of that quality with a drink for a dollar fifty.
- 31:38SPEAKER_00: But I'm a lucky dog because my girls love Costco.
- 31:42SPEAKER_00: And so here we go.
- 31:44SPEAKER_00: Um, what else?
- 31:46SPEAKER_00: Unwritten rules.
- 31:46SPEAKER_00: What else, what else, what else?
- 31:48SPEAKER_00: Never go to Costco for one thing.
- 31:51SPEAKER_00: That's a good rule.
- 31:52SPEAKER_00: Now that rule is um, it kind of comes down to the fact that you will leave with other items.
- 31:57SPEAKER_00: So if you have a list, you might actually get out with what you need.
- 32:01SPEAKER_00: I mean, you show up because you're there for paper towels, you leave with a rotisserie chicken, a 48-pack of muffins, a television, socks, a kayak,$300 worth of stuff you never even knew existed.
- 32:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I let Costco make decisions for me because they know what's best for me.
- 32:18SPEAKER_00: But just like going to the grocery store hungry, come with a plan or the cart will fill itself.
- 32:24SPEAKER_00: Go to Costco and spend less than$100.
- 32:27SPEAKER_00: The person checking you out would be like, whoa, buddy getting out of here for cheap.
- 32:32SPEAKER_00: Because they know a cart is three, four, five hundred dollars.
- 32:37SPEAKER_00: But you have to do it because if you buy your groceries at the normal grocery store, I mean, you're talking about a couple hundred dollars for a couple of paper bags full of groceries.
- 32:47SPEAKER_00: That's why I buy chicken thighs in bulk.
- 32:50SPEAKER_00: I'll buy the I'll buy the bone-in wings in bulk.
- 32:53SPEAKER_00: I buy big racks of pre-sliced tri-tip, cut them in half, and I bag them and throw them in the freezer.
- 32:59SPEAKER_00: You want to talk about high-quality food?
- 33:02SPEAKER_00: They got the best chicken thighs, the biggest, plumpest birds out there.
- 33:07SPEAKER_00: And of course, tri-tip.
- 33:09SPEAKER_00: If your doctor will allow it, that marbling is right up there with some of the most expensive cuts.
- 33:17SPEAKER_00: So meat is obnoxiously priced now.
- 33:19SPEAKER_00: That's why I suggest you go to Costco, you get those tri-tips, slice, slicey, throw them in the freezer, and you will thank me later.
- 33:28SPEAKER_00: Now, it is a lot of work being here all by myself on a day that is all about you relaxing and not putting unnecessary labor on yourself.
- 33:37SPEAKER_00: But uh, like I said, it is Marcus's birthday.
- 33:40SPEAKER_00: The guy does deserve a break.
- 33:42SPEAKER_00: Um, he was at the duck game as well.
- 33:44SPEAKER_00: I I it was such a whirlwind that I didn't even get a chance to see the guy.
- 33:48SPEAKER_00: I didn't get my egg McMarffin.
- 33:51SPEAKER_00: Um, so I owe him an apology on that.
- 33:53SPEAKER_00: I but I did say, Portland State, if I can get tickets to that, if I can get down there, I'm gonna make sure I get over there for a McMarffin.
- 34:01SPEAKER_00: And we will be back on Wednesday and Thursday.
- 34:04SPEAKER_00: And Marcus plans on being here for both, so we'll kind of run it back there.
- 34:08SPEAKER_00: We can catch up on some things.
- 34:10SPEAKER_00: And I didn't get a chance to see if his brand new commercial aired on the Jumbotron.
- 34:16SPEAKER_00: Um, and just there was just so much going on, and I was so panicked about Boise State.
- 34:21SPEAKER_00: I'm just glad today to have weathered that storm.
- 34:25SPEAKER_00: And the last thing I'll say is from where I was sitting, you could see them building the new practice facility, and that thing is badass.
- 34:32SPEAKER_00: I cannot wait for that to open.
- 34:34SPEAKER_00: And um, you know, I was talking to Aaron Fentress here on the show, and he's like, I'm not sure what that does for recruiting or if that makes you better.
- 34:41SPEAKER_00: Well, if any place could make you better, it's that place.
- 34:44SPEAKER_00: They started putting the wood up there, the concrete's all in.
- 34:48SPEAKER_00: It just looks good, it feels good, and Oregon is on the rise.
- 34:53SPEAKER_00: So I'm I'm hoping we can see more out of the Beavs.
- 34:56SPEAKER_00: I'm loving uh what we saw out of that new quarterback and freshman wide receiver combination.
- 35:01SPEAKER_00: And of course, um super stoked to see 118 meetings in a row for the Washington Huskies and the Washington State Cougars, as they kept the Pac 12 alive just long enough to get themselves some new members.
- 35:14SPEAKER_00: We'll be back on Wednesday.
- 35:16SPEAKER_00: Can't wait to see you.
- 35:17SPEAKER_00: Have a great day.
