- 0:03Let every man have his own wife and let every woman have her own
- 0:07husband. Hey listeners, this is Nick from
- 0:10Scripture Central and today's podcast addresses the question
- 0:14What did Paul really teach about marriage?
- 0:23One of Paul's most misunderstood and misquoted teachings relates
- 0:27to his views on marriage. His most extensive discourse on
- 0:31the subject is found in his first epistle to the Corinthians
- 0:34as he responded to their belief that it is good for man not to
- 0:38touch a woman. Addressing multiple groups, Paul
- 0:41defended marriage is a covenantal relationship.
- 0:44First, Paul addressed those who were married directly.
- 0:47Answering their concern, Paul declared to avoid fornication.
- 0:52Let every man have his own wife and let every woman have her own
- 0:56husband. In other words, marital intimacy
- 0:59is approved and helps avoid sin, although this is not clear in
- 1:03the King James Version. According to a more recent
- 1:06rendition of the text, Paul reinforced this idea as follows.
- 1:10Let the husband grant conjugal rights to his wife, and likewise
- 1:15the wife conjugal rights to her husband.
- 1:18A wife does not hold exclusive rights over her own body.
- 1:21Her husband also has rights. Neither does a husband hold
- 1:25exclusive rights over his own body.
- 1:27His wife also has rights do not deprive each other of intimate
- 1:31relations. Paul only grants 1 concession to
- 1:35this rule, namely, if both the husband and wife decide to
- 1:38temporarily stop sexual relations so they may spend time
- 1:42in prayer, even though Paul would not normally agree that
- 1:46sexual relations should be suspended even for extended
- 1:49periods of prayer. As noted in First Corinthians
- 1:51Chapter 7 verse five, Given these members disposition, he
- 1:55was willing to meet them halfway.
- 1:57Furthermore, Paul counseled those who were married to avoid
- 2:01divorce, stating that marriage was a commandment from the Lord.
- 2:05He even extended this counsel to a married partner who was not a
- 2:08member. Paul counseled them to avoid
- 2:10divorce in the hopes that the member spouse might bring the
- 2:13gospel into their home, sanctifying their spouse and
- 2:16children. Paul believed that husbands and
- 2:18wives with testimonies of Christ could be instrumental in
- 2:21conversion and eventual salvation of their disbelieving
- 2:24spouses, as noted by Richard D Draper and Michael D Rhodes.
- 2:28While the wider Greco Roman world would divorce at every
- 2:31whim, the Lord viewed marriage as a sacred covenant that should
- 2:35only be exited in very few circumstances.
- 2:39Next, Paul addressed the widowers and widows to this
- 2:43group. Paul stated his opinion that it
- 2:45is good for them to remain, even as I am possibly referring to an
- 2:49unmarried status following the death of a spouse.
- 2:52In general, Paul offered his opinion that they should not
- 2:55remarry unless they could not control their passions.
- 2:58While this could be seen as a negative view of marriage,
- 3:00according to Rhodes and Draper, Paul's point was that those
- 3:04whose sexual passions kept them from total devotion to the
- 3:07gospel should marry or they would lose their souls.
- 3:11Part of Paul's hesitance to promote remarriage might be
- 3:14explained by his later comments to those who had never been
- 3:17married. Paul spoke of an impending
- 3:19crisis that led him to believe that it's best for a person to
- 3:23remain as he is for the coming season.
- 3:26That is, those engaged should see their marriage through,
- 3:29while those not courting anyone should be cautious and choosing
- 3:32to pursue a relationship at that time.
- 3:35Thus, his advice at that moment appears to be based on some
- 3:39immediate situation that the Corinthian church was facing.
- 3:42Paul apparently wanted to spare them additional pain caused by
- 3:45this looming yet undefined time of trouble.
- 3:49This echoes the Lord's instruction to not marry that
- 3:52was given to the prophet Jeremiah in light of the
- 3:55impending Babylonian invasion. While we are not sure what the
- 3:59crisis in Paul's day was, it is possible that it dealt with
- 4:03developing steps towards heresy and apostasy and needed to
- 4:06prepare spiritually and serve individually against persecution
- 4:10and conflict. The last group Paul addressed
- 4:14were those currently serving in the ministry.
- 4:16While this context is largely absent from the Greek
- 4:19manuscripts, verse 35 does clarify that Paul's words were
- 4:22intended to promote good order and undistracted service to the
- 4:26Lord. Furthermore, the Joseph Smith
- 4:28translation of the Bible clarifies that the Council given
- 4:31in First Corinthians Chapter 7 verses 29 through 35, is limited
- 4:36in scope to those who were currently serving as
- 4:38missionaries. Ultimately, Paul admonished them
- 4:41that because the time is short, they needed to focus on their
- 4:45ministry first and foremost. However, Paul knew that this
- 4:49advice could not be applied to everyone who had been called to
- 4:52the ministry, and so he offered further advice to them.
- 4:55In verses 36 through 38 specifically, Paul told them
- 4:59that they should already be engaged.
- 5:01There were valid reasons why these missionaries should marry
- 5:04their fiance's in lieu of or in addition to their missionary
- 5:08service. Still, it was preferable to 1st
- 5:11fulfill one's mission Because of this, Paul wrote.
- 5:15So one who marries his fiancee does well, but one who does not
- 5:20get married does better, having first finished their temporary
- 5:24call from the Lord. Throughout his epistles, it
- 5:27becomes clear that Paul had a high regard for marriage.
- 5:30In a later letter, Paul even described marriage as a mystery.
- 5:34This word carried over into English from the Greek word
- 5:37mysterian, which originally understood to describe the
- 5:40sacred rites associated with some kinds of temple worship.
- 5:44As such, throughout all of Paul's writings, marriage is to
- 5:48be seen as a sacred covenant connected with a temple
- 5:51ordinance. To avoid misunderstanding or
- 5:54misconstruing Paul's council regarding marriage in First
- 5:57Corinthians Chapter 7, these passages must be placed in their
- 6:01proper context. Both missionary service and
- 6:04marriage were held in great esteem by Paul and were needed
- 6:07in their own time, with nuanced recommendations given for
- 6:11different circumstances. Ultimately, according to Paul,
- 6:14neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without
- 6:17the man in the Lord. Latterday revelation clarifies
- 6:21that only when a man and woman are sealed in the temple by
- 6:24proper priesthood authority can they receive the fullest
- 6:28blessings from their Heavenly Father as taught by President
- 6:31Russell M Nelson. This life is the time to prepare
- 6:35for salvation and exaltation in God's eternal plan.
- 6:40Salvation is an individual matter.
- 6:43Exaltation is a family matter. Thank you for listening to this
