- 0:17Speaker 1: On the back side of the work week, down the
- 0:20Speaker 1: stretch to Thursday. As we round the far turn of
- 0:24Speaker 1: the work where we get afternoon. Everybody, Welcome to the
- 0:28Speaker 1: program here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred, the zone
- 0:30Speaker 1: where you can always listen to us for free, absolutely
- 0:34Speaker 1: free to charge on the iHeartRadio app. My name is
- 0:37Speaker 1: Craig Way. Glad to have you with us, alongside with
- 0:42Speaker 1: you each and every weekday afternoon, Monday through Friday, two
- 0:45Speaker 1: pm to five pm in this radio space and joined
- 0:50Speaker 1: by the producer Jay Herman.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Did you have an adventurous evening last night?
- 0:55Speaker 1: Did you just kind of sit quietly now that you
- 0:57Speaker 1: have a nice, cool apartment again and your ac is
- 0:59Speaker 1: working ride and all that stuff.
- 1:00Speaker 2: How'd you spend your evening last Nay.
- 1:02Speaker 3: Yeah, as a pretty mellow evening, caught up with a
- 1:05Speaker 3: couple of friends on the phone, watch some baseball, some
- 1:08Speaker 3: Major league baseball, some little league baseball.
- 1:11Speaker 1: After all that, I say, look at you watching little
- 1:13Speaker 1: league baseball if you're all burned out and angry and
- 1:17Speaker 1: indignant and everything with what happened with the Southwest region
- 1:20Speaker 1: where finally I think the right thing was done and
- 1:22Speaker 1: the Bernie team, which defeated Louisiana on the field, was
- 1:26Speaker 1: allowed to go ahead and advanced to Williams Sport and
- 1:28Speaker 1: all that kind of stuff, and the Tulsa team was
- 1:30Speaker 1: sent home. And you were just kind of fit to
- 1:34Speaker 1: be tied when that all thing was still in the
- 1:36Speaker 1: still hanging in the ballot.
- 1:37Speaker 3: I just could believe that the world of tros, that
- 1:40Speaker 3: that's a road we've been going down for a year
- 1:43Speaker 3: or so now with these college eligibility rulings. I just
- 1:46Speaker 3: it just irked me that it trickled down to Little
- 1:48Speaker 3: League of all things.
- 1:49Speaker 2: You know.
- 1:50Speaker 1: I had a friend of mine who lives in that
- 1:53Speaker 1: area where the Southwest Region was playing, that said it
- 1:58Speaker 1: was his opinion that the judge who granted the TRO,
- 2:04Speaker 1: and this was based on the fact that this particular
- 2:07Speaker 1: judge had granted several tros on various and sundry things
- 2:11Speaker 1: over the past few years, might be coming up for
- 2:17Speaker 1: election in something, and you know, might have been a
- 2:21Speaker 1: little bit of a campaign push. I don't know. I
- 2:24Speaker 1: have his name out there. Whether that's true or not,
- 2:26Speaker 1: I don't know. The bottom line was that TRO got
- 2:30Speaker 1: dissolved that they said by another judge. You looked at
- 2:33Speaker 1: it so Anyway, all that was done. So you watched
- 2:36Speaker 1: some baseball, you said, just a little leager.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Did you wude some major.
- 2:38Speaker 4: League No, no, some major league baseball as well.
- 2:40Speaker 3: I checked out the Nats and then checked out from
- 2:43Speaker 3: the Nats when their old friend Alex Bregman, who's got
- 2:47Speaker 3: some family in the DC area, including a distant cousin
- 2:49Speaker 3: that I went to high school with. Yeah, tormented the
- 2:52Speaker 3: Nats again as he's always done at that stadium. You know,
- 2:55Speaker 3: you think back to the twenty nineteen World Series, and
- 2:57Speaker 3: then you fast forward to last night.
- 2:59Speaker 4: What three for three, couple of homers.
- 3:00Speaker 3: He torched the Nationals bullpen, which is in its third
- 3:05Speaker 3: or fourth iteration. The Dodgers have two starting rotations. The
- 3:08Speaker 3: Nats have had three or four bullpens already this season,
- 3:11Speaker 3: not necessarily by choice. Flipped over saw the end of
- 3:14Speaker 3: the Yankees Mariners, and saw some of the beginning of
- 3:16Speaker 3: the Rangers and Angels as well.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, you did watch a lot of baseball. I
- 3:21Speaker 1: did watch some. I was primarily, you know, dial in
- 3:24Speaker 1: the Dodgers' Royals. And after that seven gang losing streak
- 3:27Speaker 1: LA suffered. They've now won four of their last five
- 3:30Speaker 1: and they swept the Royals, and all that's well and
- 3:32Speaker 1: good and everything, but two things are in mind for them.
- 3:37Speaker 1: One they got a real fright when Freddie Freeman fell
- 3:40Speaker 1: down the steps. I don't know if you saw it,
- 3:42Speaker 1: if folks saw it, fell into the Royals, dugout trying
- 3:46Speaker 1: to pull down a pop fly in foul territory. He
- 3:51Speaker 1: was reaching out for what he thought was the rail
- 3:53Speaker 1: area and just stepped straight off and just tumbled straight down,
- 3:58Speaker 1: and thought it was pretty funny. First of all, it
- 4:02Speaker 1: was scary when it happened. He did get up, and
- 4:04Speaker 1: they wondered, you know, how he was and everything. They
- 4:07Speaker 1: wound up lifting him for a pinch hitter in the
- 4:08Speaker 1: eighth inning. He he did, however, appear at the postgame
- 4:13Speaker 1: press conference kind of laughed off a lot of it
- 4:16Speaker 1: as being just clumsy and having fallen out. Said he
- 4:18Speaker 1: did it one time when like ten years ago with
- 4:21Speaker 1: the Braves playing the Diamondbacks, did a very similar thing
- 4:24Speaker 1: before the nets were all the way around and went
- 4:25Speaker 1: tumbling over. But he seemed to just sore all ever
- 4:29Speaker 1: sore shoulder, hand, hip, leg, stuff like that. But but
- 4:37Speaker 1: otherwise it didn't look like there was anything broken or
- 4:42Speaker 1: anything like that. The team doctors asked him, would you
- 4:44Speaker 1: like his text ray? He said, you'd have to act
- 4:46Speaker 1: ray my whole body, and they said, well, we can
- 4:48Speaker 1: do that. He was like, no, no, no, just he said,
- 4:51Speaker 1: but we'll see. I'll get a good nicely. We'll see
- 4:53Speaker 1: how I feel in the morning. So he's listed his
- 4:56Speaker 1: day to day. He may or may not go tonight.
- 4:57Speaker 1: But the other point, which gets me to the other point. Yeah,
- 5:00Speaker 1: they swept the Royals, they won four or five, but
- 5:03Speaker 1: a lot of the crux is going to happen this weekend.
- 5:06Speaker 1: The Dodgers are hosting the Milwaukee Brewers, and the Brewers
- 5:11Speaker 1: come up being swept by the scorching hot Padres, who
- 5:16Speaker 1: are about as hot as the Red Sox were before.
- 5:18Speaker 1: The Red Sox now falling into a five game losing streak,
- 5:21Speaker 1: but they had a three game lead, a four game
- 5:26Speaker 1: lead on Los Angeles for the best record in the
- 5:29Speaker 1: National League, and they got swept there. Three games with
- 5:32Speaker 1: the Padres, the Dodgers swept through, so there's only one
- 5:34Speaker 1: game separating them. And by the way, the Atlanta Braves
- 5:36Speaker 1: are in that as well. The Dodgers and Braves are
- 5:39Speaker 1: tied one game back. In Milwaukee for the best record
- 5:42Speaker 1: in the National League. So it's a big four game
- 5:44Speaker 1: weekend series in Los Angeles this weekend between those you mentioned,
- 5:48Speaker 1: the Rangers and the Astros, and Astros picking up another
- 5:52Speaker 1: game on Texas and the Ranger and up a game
- 5:55Speaker 1: and a half on them. In the American League West,
- 5:57Speaker 1: that thing is going to go to the wire. The
- 5:59Speaker 1: Rain have been right act or included in the wildcard race,
- 6:05Speaker 1: depending on the day to day, but I think this
- 6:07Speaker 1: thing will go down to the final I think it's
- 6:09Speaker 1: going to the final day to determine all playoff teams
- 6:13Speaker 1: that may include division winners, like say in the American
- 6:18Speaker 1: League East, although the Rays have been red hot and
- 6:21Speaker 1: so they've opened up some distance the American League Central
- 6:25Speaker 1: there and obviously the West with Rangers, Astros and Mariners.
- 6:30Speaker 1: And it could be so as well in the National
- 6:34Speaker 1: League East if it turns out that way, although the
- 6:35Speaker 1: Brace had been hot of late, so we'll see. And
- 6:37Speaker 1: the wild cards for sure are definitely I think going
- 6:44Speaker 1: to go down to the final day.
- 6:46Speaker 4: Yeah, and I could use that.
- 6:47Speaker 3: I could use a little push from my preseason al
- 6:50Speaker 3: pennant pick the Detroit Tigers, an equation that I thought
- 6:53Speaker 3: Sureley included Terry skoubl but it's impressive what Craig they've
- 6:57Speaker 3: been able to do. I'm a little shocked seeing that
- 6:59Speaker 3: they've got a plus eighty seven run differential. I know
- 7:02Speaker 3: it's a story that's been brought up in some of
- 7:04Speaker 3: the national picture, but I mean, you just think back
- 7:07Speaker 3: to the Tigers and a team that was so banged up,
- 7:11Speaker 3: particularly early in the season, and wonder maybe what could
- 7:15Speaker 3: have been, and wonder what could still be, which I
- 7:18Speaker 3: didn't think we'd be saying a couple of weeks ago.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:20Speaker 1: Right now, they're up to nothing on the Guardians. It's
- 7:22Speaker 1: in the top of the eighth inning, and a graphic
- 7:26Speaker 1: just came up, so they so far they're pitching a shutout.
- 7:30Speaker 1: They have no strikeouts recorded.
- 7:32Speaker 2: In the game.
- 7:33Speaker 4: Wow, out of the Guardians don't strike out a lot.
- 7:35Speaker 1: Yeah, and so the last time the Tigers pitched a
- 7:38Speaker 1: shutout without a strikeout twelve years ago, twenty to fourteen.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Twenty fourteen was the year. So it's too nothing Detroy
- 7:45Speaker 1: as Cleveland bats in the eighth inning. Anyway, We'll keep
- 7:48Speaker 1: you updated on the baseball, but what we are going
- 7:50Speaker 1: to do today is continue a couple of things that
- 7:53Speaker 1: we've been continuing on our SEC football previews every day
- 7:57Speaker 1: last week, this week, and next week, we're visiting with
- 8:00Speaker 1: a different play by play voice all of the play
- 8:03Speaker 1: by play voices of the Southeastern Conference. It started last
- 8:06Speaker 1: week with the defending conference champion Georgia Bulldogs. Jeff Danzler,
- 8:10Speaker 1: who moves into their play by play role this season,
- 8:13Speaker 1: was with us last Monday. Last Tuesday, it was Arkansas
- 8:18Speaker 1: and we visited with Chuck Barrett, the Razorbacks play by
- 8:21Speaker 1: play voice. On Wednesday, Sean Kelly, who calls the action
- 8:25Speaker 1: for the Florida Gators, was our guest as we previewed Florida.
- 8:28Speaker 1: On Thursday was Tom Leach, the voice of the Kentucky Wildcats.
- 8:32Speaker 1: We looked at the Cats, and then on Friday we
- 8:38Speaker 1: talked to Neil Price, the voice of the Mississippi State
- 8:41Speaker 1: Bulldogs previewing Misissippi State.
- 8:43Speaker 2: This week, we started on Monday with South Carolina.
- 8:47Speaker 1: Todd Ellis, their play by play voice, was with us
- 8:50Speaker 1: on Monday. On Tuesday was the Missouri Tigers. Mike Kelly,
- 8:53Speaker 1: their broadcast voice joined us. Yesterday was LSU Chris Blair,
- 8:58Speaker 1: their play by play voice joined us today we'll look
- 9:00Speaker 1: at the Vanderbilt Commodores. Andrew Alligreta, who calls Vanderbilts Football Action,
- 9:05Speaker 1: will join us coming up here in just a few moments,
- 9:09Speaker 1: and so that's today's SEC preview. Also continuing what we
- 9:13Speaker 1: started last week and this week. Next week we'll give
- 9:16Speaker 1: away copies of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine.
- 9:19Speaker 2: You can win a copy.
- 9:21Speaker 1: It'll be a copy put out there to try to
- 9:23Speaker 1: win one per hour, mixing both the random nature and
- 9:28Speaker 1: also some trivia.
- 9:29Speaker 4: So we'll have that coming up as well.
- 9:30Speaker 1: But up next we talk about the doors the Vanderbilt
- 9:34Speaker 1: Commodoores with play by play voice Andrew Alligretta here on
- 9:37Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM thirteen under the zone of the iHeartRadio appow.
- 9:46Speaker 5: Today.
- 9:46Speaker 6: Everybody knows this is college, so.
- 9:52Speaker 1: Obviously it's a great voice of Lina Richie, who, by
- 9:56Speaker 1: the way, is in concert. I think on Friday night
- 10:00Speaker 1: Line of Richie and earth Wind and Fire doing a
- 10:02Speaker 1: show a movie. But of course Line of Richie had
- 10:06Speaker 1: his first big explosion on the scene as the lead
- 10:09Speaker 1: voice of the Commodores, which included this tune when I
- 10:13Speaker 1: was in high school in brick House, which tells you
- 10:15Speaker 1: about how old I am, but it also kicks me
- 10:19Speaker 1: into our SEC previews. And next up the Vanderbilt Commodores
- 10:24Speaker 1: coming off that historic ten and three season of a
- 10:27Speaker 1: year ago, and please to be joined by our friend
- 10:29Speaker 1: Andrew Alligreta on the hotline. Andrew, I appreciate the time,
- 10:33Speaker 1: and I would imagine there's a lot of excitement there
- 10:37Speaker 1: there on campus coming off a ten win season under
- 10:39Speaker 1: Clark Lee as he gets ready to start a six season.
- 10:43Speaker 7: Craig, it's good to talk to you. I'm not sure
- 10:45Speaker 7: if it's as much excitement as Cam Coleman making ridiculous
- 10:50Speaker 7: catches in Bracted, but we've got enthusiasm.
- 10:56Speaker 8: You know.
- 10:57Speaker 1: You know, there was a great deal of debate long
- 11:00Speaker 1: Ward fans could be as too, because they the pass wobbled.
- 11:03Speaker 1: It was like, was that a pass from March? Did
- 11:06Speaker 1: he throw a wounded duck? It was all that kind
- 11:08Speaker 1: of there.
- 11:08Speaker 2: Was it tipped? Come to find out later was tip?
- 11:10Speaker 1: But that's the kind of the craziness that some fans
- 11:13Speaker 1: get into off of that deal. One thing that I
- 11:17Speaker 1: noticed when I was up there for the baseball series
- 11:20Speaker 1: in May, and then I was up there about three
- 11:23Speaker 1: weeks ago passing through town with my wife and we
- 11:26Speaker 1: stayed there at the hotel right by campus and right
- 11:30Speaker 1: by the stadium, and I noticed there was even more work,
- 11:36Speaker 1: more renovation, more addition done to a First Bank stadium.
- 11:43Speaker 1: And also it continues as well Hawkins Field with a
- 11:45Speaker 1: baseball ballpark as well. So I would imagine and I
- 11:49Speaker 1: saw this week on a line that season tickets are
- 11:52Speaker 1: sold out, and I guess that's where I was leading
- 11:54Speaker 1: with the excitement level that's building coming off that ten
- 11:57Speaker 1: win campaign of a season ago.
- 12:00Speaker 7: Oh we are, There's no doubt about it. There's a
- 12:02Speaker 7: lot of excitement about the program where it is. What
- 12:06Speaker 7: it means to quote unquote rebuild for Vanderbilt effects kind
- 12:10Speaker 7: of the mold that we're in, and I'm not going
- 12:12Speaker 7: to necessarily label it as a rebuild, but there's no
- 12:15Speaker 7: doubt that we're transitioning from a moment with Papa and
- 12:19Speaker 7: Stours to a moment without Pavia and Stours. There's certainly
- 12:22Speaker 7: a lot of excitement around the possibility of Jared Curtis,
- 12:26Speaker 7: this five star quarterback that he commits from Georgia and
- 12:29Speaker 7: comes to us a Nashville kid. He has not won
- 12:33Speaker 7: the job yet, so We don't know if that's where
- 12:35Speaker 7: that's going. It certainly could be blaze ber little with
- 12:38Speaker 7: there is both I think excitement, Craig, but I think
- 12:40Speaker 7: there's a lot of intrigue from Vanderbilt fans to see
- 12:44Speaker 7: where it goes. I think the gap is Vanderfilt fans
- 12:48Speaker 7: believe that there will be sustained success with coach Lee,
- 12:52Speaker 7: and I think the outside world is a little bit
- 12:54Speaker 7: more skeptical.
- 12:56Speaker 1: Well, and I guess it's kind of like proven to
- 12:58Speaker 1: us again, right proven who was again he was coming
- 13:01Speaker 1: off the back to back Bowl appearances and that sort
- 13:03Speaker 1: of thing before we get to the quarterback situation. And
- 13:07Speaker 1: you mentioned Eli Stowers who And I told you this
- 13:10Speaker 1: story that I got a chance to call the state
- 13:11Speaker 1: championship game for television where Elive was a quarterback and
- 13:14Speaker 1: such a great athlete, had a great career at Vanderbilt
- 13:18Speaker 1: once he transferred over there. But the other guy, they've
- 13:22Speaker 1: got a chance to call some games, where was Cedric
- 13:24Speaker 1: Alexander playing for LBJ in this town. And now he
- 13:27Speaker 1: begins his senior year and safe to say he's the
- 13:30Speaker 1: lead guy back there, isn't he?
- 13:32Speaker 7: I think? So we're really fortunate to have Cedric Alexander
- 13:36Speaker 7: Cole Kublick has said this, and like, I believe that
- 13:39Speaker 7: wholeheartedly that Cedric Seti, whatever you want to call him,
- 13:43Speaker 7: is truly one of the most underrated players in the
- 13:45Speaker 7: Southeastern Conference. He doesn't put up as many quote unquote
- 13:51Speaker 7: like home run runs now he did have one versus
- 13:54Speaker 7: Alabama a season ago, but he's in the end zone constantly.
- 13:58Speaker 7: He's got twenty one career some touchdowns, which puts some
- 14:01Speaker 7: third all time at Vanderbilt. And I don't know that
- 14:04Speaker 7: there's a ton of running backs that can do all
- 14:07Speaker 7: three phases the way that Seti does runs the football.
- 14:10Speaker 7: If that play can get you five yards, Seti's gonna
- 14:14Speaker 7: get you five yards every single time. And then he
- 14:18Speaker 7: can stretch it too. He can catch the football out
- 14:21Speaker 7: of the backfield. I think he has like seven catches
- 14:23Speaker 7: versus Alabama that famous game that we had two seasons ago,
- 14:27Speaker 7: five six steps something like that. And then boy can
- 14:30Speaker 7: he block. Like if you want to put him in
- 14:32Speaker 7: on third down and shotgun and he's going to take
- 14:35Speaker 7: care of your quarterback, he'll put somebody on the turf.
- 14:37Speaker 7: Like he is so deeply underrated to do everything that
- 14:41Speaker 7: you could possibly ask of a running.
- 14:43Speaker 2: Back, no doubt about it.
- 14:44Speaker 1: Visiting with Andrew Allick right to play by play voice
- 14:46Speaker 1: of the Vanderbilt Commodore's here on thirteen under the zone. Okay,
- 14:50Speaker 1: it's kind of a tough act to follow. What Diego
- 14:53Speaker 1: Pavia did. I know that's that is legendary stuff, what
- 14:57Speaker 1: he did in a Vanderbilt uniforms.
- 15:00Speaker 2: So I'm seeing what There are.
- 15:02Speaker 1: Several different candidates for the starting job or is it
- 15:05Speaker 1: being handed to the freshman Jared Curtis.
- 15:08Speaker 7: Yeah, it's certainly not being handed to Jared Curtis, and
- 15:12Speaker 7: Vannerbilt has been pretty adamant throughout the recruiting process that
- 15:15Speaker 7: as he made the switch from Georgia to Vanderbilt, nothing
- 15:18Speaker 7: was promised to him, and I would tell you being
- 15:20Speaker 7: out at fall camp that certainly appears to be the case.
- 15:23Speaker 7: It is a healthy and true quarterback competition. Jared Curtis
- 15:28Speaker 7: is very much in the mix. He looks every bit
- 15:32Speaker 7: athletically like a five star quarterback, there's no doubt. But
- 15:37Speaker 7: he's a freshman and he's coming from what has been
- 15:40Speaker 7: a little bit of a lower level high school in
- 15:44Speaker 7: Tennessee to Southeastern Conference football. Like that's going to be
- 15:47Speaker 7: hard to do if it's the highest level of Texas football,
- 15:50Speaker 7: let alone lower level Tennessee football making that transition up
- 15:54Speaker 7: to the Southeastern Conference. So there's obvious and clear growth
- 15:57Speaker 7: that he's going to have to make understanding how to
- 16:00Speaker 7: play the quarterback position. I don't think that's a surprise
- 16:02Speaker 7: to anybody. You've got an upperclassman in Blaize Berlowitz who's
- 16:06Speaker 7: been in the system for a couple of years, came
- 16:08Speaker 7: from New Mexico State and has backed up Diego Popia
- 16:11Speaker 7: for a couple of seasons now, so he's got more experience.
- 16:14Speaker 7: He understands the system a little bit better. His overall
- 16:18Speaker 7: athletic skill set is not the same, but it's not
- 16:22Speaker 7: just like, oh, who can throw the football the furthest
- 16:24Speaker 7: That doesn't translate to who's the best quarterback to help
- 16:27Speaker 7: you win games? And there's a couple of other guys
- 16:30Speaker 7: down the list. The defensive court stander for you guys.
- 16:33Speaker 7: His son with Muschamp is I think quietly putting together
- 16:37Speaker 7: a pretty good ball camp. Do I think he's going
- 16:40Speaker 7: to be the starting quarterback? I don't know. That would
- 16:42Speaker 7: probably be out of bounds for me to evaluate the
- 16:46Speaker 7: quarterback competition too far. But it's a true competition and
- 16:51Speaker 7: what it means to quote unquote follow Diego Popia. I
- 16:53Speaker 7: think all of these guys and Clark will manage it
- 16:56Speaker 7: really well. It's like you're not following Diego Poppy. You're
- 16:59Speaker 7: just going out to be yourself and helping this version
- 17:01Speaker 7: of Vanderbilt football find success. So we don't have a
- 17:05Speaker 7: announced starter just yet. We've got a couple of I
- 17:08Speaker 7: would suspect pretty important scrimmages on Saturday and the following
- 17:12Speaker 7: Saturday that I do suspect will go a long way
- 17:15Speaker 7: to determining who Coach Lee and Tim Beck want to
- 17:17Speaker 7: be the starter.
- 17:18Speaker 1: You know, in looking at the receiving position, Yeah, Stowers
- 17:22Speaker 1: isn't there anymore. But what you do have, you've got
- 17:26Speaker 1: some experience and mentality. Guys, I remember seeing Junior Cheryl
- 17:29Speaker 1: make some catches last year. How about your thoughts on
- 17:31Speaker 1: your receiving corp.
- 17:33Speaker 7: I think it's got skill. I think it's probably unproven.
- 17:37Speaker 7: Junior is very much proven. Like he's he's a really
- 17:40Speaker 7: good wide receiver that has made it consistently important plays
- 17:44Speaker 7: for us to the past couple of seasons. He will
- 17:47Speaker 7: go down again Vanderbilt more as one of the most
- 17:50Speaker 7: important plays in that Alabama game of fourth down and
- 17:53Speaker 7: one touchdown reception for like thirty five yards, but set
- 17:58Speaker 7: career high last year, and like he looks very in control.
- 18:02Speaker 7: If he's the cam Coleman athletic freaking by the way
- 18:06Speaker 7: cam Coleman eight us up last year versus Augurn, he
- 18:10Speaker 7: was just he was a menace to deal within that game.
- 18:13Speaker 7: But Junior is just like really good. He knows how
- 18:16Speaker 7: to be a receiver. I think he can probably play
- 18:18Speaker 7: at the next level. We'll see where that goes. But
- 18:21Speaker 7: he's super talented. After him, there is I don't want
- 18:27Speaker 7: to call it uncertainty, but it's just new some new pieces.
- 18:31Speaker 7: We brought in a guy by the name of to
- 18:32Speaker 7: Corey Thomas, who's super talented, one of the bigger wide
- 18:35Speaker 7: receivers Vanderbilt has had, I would say, in the past
- 18:38Speaker 7: four to five seasons. He's coming from Old Dominion, so
- 18:41Speaker 7: he's going to have to figure out what it means
- 18:43Speaker 7: to perform consistently at this level. We've got a really
- 18:46Speaker 7: nice piece in Cole Adams, who's a transfer from Alabama
- 18:50Speaker 7: kind of looking for his shot, but he was recruited
- 18:54Speaker 7: to Alabama. He's got the skills, Like I don't want
- 18:56Speaker 7: to call him a slot receiver because that's not fair
- 18:58Speaker 7: to him, but he can he can play a lot
- 19:00Speaker 7: of different positions despite being undersized. And then we're going
- 19:04Speaker 7: to replace Sours with a Cole Spence tight end who
- 19:08Speaker 7: has been in the program for a number of years.
- 19:09Speaker 7: He can block, he can get out, he can catch.
- 19:11Speaker 7: We we've got a tight end from East Carolina and Connor.
- 19:14Speaker 7: There's a lot of pieces, like there's no doubt. There's
- 19:17Speaker 7: pieces that just you know, you're coming off the season
- 19:19Speaker 7: with Paffia and everyone had their defined roles. It's like, Okay,
- 19:22Speaker 7: how are we going to figure out how these pieces
- 19:25Speaker 7: look when you actually put them together?
- 19:27Speaker 2: No doubt about that.
- 19:28Speaker 1: I would it be safe to say that other than
- 19:32Speaker 1: other than seeing who's going to emerge as the starting quarterback,
- 19:37Speaker 1: that the biggest question mark with the offense will be, hey,
- 19:41Speaker 1: if this, you know, if this comes through, it could
- 19:43Speaker 1: be really big. Would be along the offensive line. With
- 19:45Speaker 1: the loss of several key personnel to graduation last year.
- 19:51Speaker 7: You could probably say that about every single football team, Like,
- 19:53Speaker 7: if you can block them up right, you've got you've
- 19:56Speaker 7: got a chance. We replaced a lot on that offensive line.
- 20:00Speaker 7: We returned to guard and Kate McConnell, who I think
- 20:03Speaker 7: is pretty good. But there's no doubt that the way
- 20:07Speaker 7: that Vanderbilt has approached recruiting is to put a lot
- 20:11Speaker 7: of resources in the transfer portal on the lines. And
- 20:15Speaker 7: that's easy to say, it's hard to execute. But I
- 20:17Speaker 7: do think they deserve credit. This is Clark, this is
- 20:20Speaker 7: Barton Simmons and being very aggressive at those positions to
- 20:24Speaker 7: find good fits that match the system. Like we brought
- 20:27Speaker 7: in a kid from Pitt that's going to be our
- 20:30Speaker 7: new starting center. He's already up for the Remington Award,
- 20:33Speaker 7: which you know it's watchless season. I get that, but
- 20:35Speaker 7: he's noted for his skill. That's great. We've got a
- 20:38Speaker 7: developing tackle who's like six foot eight and the massive
- 20:42Speaker 7: like they put that emphasis in. I do think that
- 20:47Speaker 7: there will clearly be just like the receivers chaffing the quack,
- 20:51Speaker 7: there's like a lot of this stuff. It's got like
- 20:54Speaker 7: we're we're not just going to just roll out there
- 20:56Speaker 7: versus Austin p and got to think that this is
- 20:59Speaker 7: easy peasy, like there's gonna there's gonna take some time.
- 21:03Speaker 7: I do think likely to make it all gel, but
- 21:06Speaker 7: I think the talent is there. I really think the
- 21:09Speaker 7: talent on this team is there. It's almost, to some
- 21:12Speaker 7: extent a little opposite from last year, where you look
- 21:15Speaker 7: offense defense and you see all these really good pieces,
- 21:17Speaker 7: but you need to have the captain of the ship
- 21:20Speaker 7: helped get it there. Last year, you go, Okay, well,
- 21:23Speaker 7: I don't know what we have in some of these spots,
- 21:27Speaker 7: but we do know that we've got the captain and
- 21:28Speaker 7: he'll take us there. So there's some role reversal from
- 21:31Speaker 7: a season ago. But the talent, I think it's as
- 21:34Speaker 7: deep and talented as a roster that Clark has had
- 21:36Speaker 7: in six seasons.
- 21:37Speaker 1: Andrew Ali Grada, played by play voice of Vanderbilt COMMODOCE,
- 21:40Speaker 1: joined us for a few more minutes. You can you
- 21:42Speaker 1: can have a much more I would imagine upbeat and
- 21:48Speaker 1: and knowledgeable. I guess prognosis of what your defense may
- 21:52Speaker 1: be able with all those returning starters, that looks like
- 21:54Speaker 1: it can be a real strength of this team.
- 21:57Speaker 7: I'm gonna says something that's so like brutally boring. It's like, man,
- 22:02Speaker 7: can a pitcher throw strikes. I think this year's football team,
- 22:07Speaker 7: especially early on, will be defined by three incredibly boring characteristics.
- 22:14Speaker 7: One can we run the football? Two? Do we take
- 22:17Speaker 7: care of the football? And three can we play defects?
- 22:21Speaker 7: It's again back to the offense. We're just not We
- 22:24Speaker 7: scored five hundred points last year offensively, which was the
- 22:27Speaker 7: second most in program history. We're not probably positioned early
- 22:32Speaker 7: on in the season to do that. We might get there,
- 22:35Speaker 7: but what buys you time and takes the pressure off
- 22:40Speaker 7: the offense needing to execute massive chunk plays is like,
- 22:44Speaker 7: can you get off the field on third downs? Can
- 22:47Speaker 7: your defense create some turnovers? Can you run the football
- 22:51Speaker 7: and drop the temperature on third down? And ten? So
- 22:53Speaker 7: it's third down and one. I mean, it's really boring stuff,
- 22:57Speaker 7: but I think that's probably who we are, and I
- 22:59Speaker 7: do think the defense has a chance to do that.
- 23:01Speaker 9: Like I.
- 23:03Speaker 7: Unequivocally think it's the most sec looking defense that Clark
- 23:06Speaker 7: has had in six years. Some of that is returning pieces,
- 23:11Speaker 7: some of that is addition, but I think it's I
- 23:15Speaker 7: think it's a it's a unit that can get after
- 23:18Speaker 7: the quarterback. We don't have a Colin Simmons like you
- 23:20Speaker 7: guys do. But we've got some pieces that can get
- 23:22Speaker 7: after the quarterback, and I think we've got a secondary
- 23:25Speaker 7: that that is gonna surprise some people with.
- 23:28Speaker 2: How talent it is.
- 23:29Speaker 7: I mean, there's there's big assignment out there in this conference.
- 23:31Speaker 7: There are big, big, big, big, big assignments in this conference.
- 23:34Speaker 7: But I think we've got more pieces that will be
- 23:37Speaker 7: up to the challenge and won't require our defensive staff to,
- 23:42Speaker 7: you know, like drop a bunch of people on coverage.
- 23:45Speaker 7: So there's help, right, like if you maybe afforded the
- 23:48Speaker 7: ability to blitz a little bit and have a couple
- 23:50Speaker 7: of guys match up one on one. I think there's
- 23:52Speaker 7: probably more tools in the toolbox for a defensive coordinator
- 23:55Speaker 7: this year than perhaps in past seasons.
- 23:58Speaker 1: I want to ask you a little bit about the schedule,
- 24:01Speaker 1: because when I've talked to the other play by play guys,
- 24:03Speaker 1: everybody's schedules are unique, and some have those traditional end
- 24:09Speaker 1: of season non conference games like Florida Florida State and
- 24:13Speaker 1: Kentucky Louisville, those types of things, and with a nine
- 24:17Speaker 1: game conference schedule, that really meant a real quick ramp up.
- 24:21Speaker 1: In the case of the schedule that you guys have. However,
- 24:25Speaker 1: I think it's kind of beneficial, not that it's going
- 24:27Speaker 1: to be that easy, but you mentioned Austin p They
- 24:30Speaker 1: come down I twenty four, so you have them as
- 24:34Speaker 1: an FCS and then Delaware, which is just now in
- 24:36Speaker 1: its second season in FBS competition, in NC State, which
- 24:41Speaker 1: is a home game. And then of your five conference
- 24:44Speaker 1: road games, four are against teams that had sub five
- 24:48Speaker 1: hundred records last year. Auburn, Kentucky, Mississippi State in Florida.
- 24:52Speaker 1: Now all of them perhaps figured to be better. And
- 24:55Speaker 1: you do have to go to Georgia obviously, and you've
- 24:57Speaker 1: got Old miss Albeit at home in Alabama, at home
- 25:00Speaker 1: in Tennessee at home. What do you make of the
- 25:02Speaker 1: schedule and how it sets up for the commodoors.
- 25:06Speaker 7: I don't know, And again not a cop out. I
- 25:10Speaker 7: have always felt uneasy talking about schedules and projections coming
- 25:15Speaker 7: off the twenty four season, where you could have told
- 25:17Speaker 7: me Vanderbilt got to seven and six, but you weren't
- 25:19Speaker 7: going to tell me that Vanderbilt gets to seven and
- 25:21Speaker 7: six by losing to Georgia State and beating number one
- 25:24Speaker 7: Alabama in the same season. So I'm a little always
- 25:32Speaker 7: tepid to feel too much of anything. I think my
- 25:36Speaker 7: two thoughts are, I think we'll learn a lot with
- 25:40Speaker 7: Austin p and Delaware. I really have felt like over
- 25:44Speaker 7: the years, Craig, that when you've got a team that
- 25:47Speaker 7: handles non conference opponents, well, all of a sudden, you
- 25:51Speaker 7: feel like you've got a team that can step into
- 25:53Speaker 7: the fight in the SEC. And then you know, in
- 25:56Speaker 7: twenty three here we just kind of eaked by Hawaii
- 25:59Speaker 7: and we didn't look particularly great versus an Alabama A
- 26:02Speaker 7: and M team, and lo and behold we went oh
- 26:04Speaker 7: and A in conference play. So you know, I do
- 26:08Speaker 7: feel like non conference play will tell us a lot.
- 26:11Speaker 7: To your point about some of the teams that we play,
- 26:14Speaker 7: this might mean something, this might not. But I do
- 26:17Speaker 7: think it's interesting that we play all of the teams
- 26:20Speaker 7: with a new head coach, with the exception of Elishue. Wow,
- 26:26Speaker 7: what does that mean? I don't necessarily know, but but
- 26:29Speaker 7: I do. But I do feel like ups and downs
- 26:33Speaker 7: are typical for a program with a new head coach.
- 26:36Speaker 7: And that doesn't mean they're like terrible on any given Saturday,
- 26:41Speaker 7: but like you know, if there's not always perfect execution
- 26:44Speaker 7: and you're learning things and like good and bad moments
- 26:47Speaker 7: and all of that sort of stuff. Right, Like, you've
- 26:48Speaker 7: got a new head coach in Florida, we played them.
- 26:50Speaker 7: We got a new head coach in Old Myths, we
- 26:52Speaker 7: played them. They're really good, but he's still in his
- 26:55Speaker 7: first full season. P Golding and what Auburn's got a
- 26:59Speaker 7: new coach play them? And I know Mississippi State's been
- 27:02Speaker 7: down a little bit, so I don't I don't know.
- 27:05Speaker 7: I'm it's an interesting schedule, but I I feel like
- 27:10Speaker 7: Vanderbilt again not to give you like just brutally discussing
- 27:13Speaker 7: cliche takes, like it's gonna have to figure out itself
- 27:17Speaker 7: and its own execution before things like and this is
- 27:20Speaker 7: not pessimistic, I just because the defense I think is
- 27:23Speaker 7: really good. In the offense, there's a lot of pieces,
- 27:25Speaker 7: but when you've got a new starting quarterback, you've got
- 27:27Speaker 7: to figure yourself yourself out first.
- 27:30Speaker 6: I think.
- 27:30Speaker 7: I think if we take care of ourselves, I think
- 27:32Speaker 7: all of a sudden, some of those opportunities with the
- 27:35Speaker 7: opponents might be a factor. But if we're not taking
- 27:38Speaker 7: care of the football very well and the defense isn't
- 27:40Speaker 7: creating turnovers and we can't run the football. Then you know,
- 27:42Speaker 7: I don't know how much it's going to matter that
- 27:44Speaker 7: Ford is coming off a difficult season, like the Swamp's
- 27:47Speaker 7: gonna sit right on top of you and we're gonna
- 27:48Speaker 7: throw a pick and you know we'll lose the football game.
- 27:51Speaker 7: So I think there's opportunity there, but I don't I
- 27:54Speaker 7: don't know how much of an opportunity I think it
- 27:57Speaker 7: is until until you watch them play Austin and Delaware
- 28:01Speaker 7: and kind of figure out who this team is in
- 28:04Speaker 7: twenty twenty six, moving on from twenty twenty five.
- 28:07Speaker 2: That's a good point there.
- 28:08Speaker 1: Final thing I had for you, Andrew, and that's that's
- 28:10Speaker 1: about clark Ley. And he has just been He has
- 28:14Speaker 1: been very calm, direct and yet adamant and determined that
- 28:19Speaker 1: this program is not going to take a step back,
- 28:22Speaker 1: that they that they have figured out what they need
- 28:24Speaker 1: to do where and how to go about it on
- 28:27Speaker 1: a year and yet out basis, and he he really
- 28:30Speaker 1: does seem to have a planned for sustained success for
- 28:36Speaker 1: a program that's had little of that down through the decade.
- 28:39Speaker 1: So how about your thoughts on the impact that he
- 28:42Speaker 1: is having on this program and how he seems to
- 28:45Speaker 1: be building it for sustainability.
- 28:48Speaker 7: I think it's immense. I mean, I don't think we're
- 28:50Speaker 7: here without Clark. I think he is part of a
- 28:53Speaker 7: pretty dangerous, you know, two or three headed monster with
- 28:56Speaker 7: this program, which then continues to athletic director Candice lenn
- 29:01Speaker 7: the chancellor Daniel Geermeyer. Clark is great just from I
- 29:08Speaker 7: don't know, He's a great motivator. I think he holds
- 29:11Speaker 7: high standards. I think he's incredibly brilliant, like incredibly brilliant.
- 29:15Speaker 7: You're talking about well educated private school education here in Nashville.
- 29:21Speaker 7: Just a just a generically cerebral individual, somebody that went
- 29:24Speaker 7: to Vanderbilt and graduated from Vanderbilt, which you know, just
- 29:27Speaker 7: because you have a fancy degree doesn't necessarily give you anything.
- 29:30Speaker 7: But I think, I think, I think he has proven
- 29:33Speaker 7: his intellectual chops on a day in, day out basis,
- 29:36Speaker 7: which is important. And I think he's got like a
- 29:39Speaker 7: a he talks about his flame burning hot all of
- 29:46Speaker 7: the time. Now it doesn't like explode, but he's gonna
- 29:51Speaker 7: burn hot for a long time and just be very uh,
- 29:55Speaker 7: stick to itive with what he's doing. And and you know,
- 29:58Speaker 7: another key part of it again, he made great hires
- 30:01Speaker 7: with Jerry Kill and Tim Back. I think the fact
- 30:05Speaker 7: that he's a Vanderbilt guy, and I think in this
- 30:09Speaker 7: era of nil and resources, the fact that he can
- 30:14Speaker 7: have found success with Diego, and I think he can
- 30:16Speaker 7: marshal support within the Vanderbilt community because he's one of
- 30:19Speaker 7: their own and he understands the language is all really important.
- 30:23Speaker 7: So again, I don't you know what it means to
- 30:25Speaker 7: sustain success. I don't want to put like wind and
- 30:28Speaker 7: lost numbers on that, but I think I think he's
- 30:31Speaker 7: got this place in pretty good footing. And then you
- 30:34Speaker 7: add committed people above him, and Candice Lay and Daniel Deermeyer,
- 30:38Speaker 7: and you've got a really dangerous combo for Vanderbilt finding
- 30:42Speaker 7: success in the long term.
- 30:45Speaker 1: Andrew Aliagretta is the play by play voice of the
- 30:47Speaker 1: Vanderbilt Commodorees.
- 30:48Speaker 4: Andrew, I appreciate the time.
- 30:49Speaker 1: If I see you this season, that means it'll be
- 30:51Speaker 1: in Atlanta for the SEC Championship, since Texas and Vanderbilt
- 30:55Speaker 1: have had a couple of bang bang games last couple
- 30:58Speaker 1: of years. But be fun to see you again.
- 31:01Speaker 7: I'll see it Atlanta, all right.
- 31:03Speaker 2: Thank you appreciate that.
- 31:04Speaker 1: That's Andrew Allighrad of the Voice of the Vanderbilt Commodores.
- 31:09Speaker 1: All right, coming up next, we bring in Conceivable here
- 31:11Speaker 1: on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone.
- 31:13Speaker 2: In the iHeartRadio app.
- 31:32Speaker 3: Check an hour the.
- 31:33Speaker 1: Program here on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone.
- 31:36Speaker 1: Craig Waye joined by the producer, have prod Jay Kerman.
- 31:41Speaker 1: That's Herman with one inn, not you. I'm like Mark Herman,
- 31:46Speaker 1: the former quarterback, you know, not that that's would be
- 31:49Speaker 1: with two ends. I don't know if there was one
- 31:51Speaker 1: n like the former head football coach here. That's right,
- 31:53Speaker 1: no relation. You've quickly added that every time no relation.
- 31:57Speaker 3: That was had to be quickly added, particularly in my
- 32:02Speaker 3: sports focused journalism classes that were going down, you know,
- 32:08Speaker 3: during my four years from twenty eighteen to twenty twenty
- 32:10Speaker 3: two on the forty Acres. He's my pops. Yeah, that's
- 32:14Speaker 3: the last thing you want. You don't want to be
- 32:15Speaker 3: a falsely labeled a NEFO baby, especially not when he
- 32:19Speaker 3: when he got sent packing.
- 32:20Speaker 1: It's a good point. It's a good point there and
- 32:24Speaker 1: now on the Florida State staff. Yeah, Herman is oh
- 32:27Speaker 1: see your.
- 32:28Speaker 4: Analyst, uh analyst.
- 32:31Speaker 2: I think he's.
- 32:31Speaker 4: Yeah, it was the TV analyst for a little while.
- 32:34Speaker 1: Yeah, well he did several different things. His first game
- 32:36Speaker 1: involved my alma mater, North Texas, and and then you
- 32:41Speaker 1: know he was also in the Chicago Bear staff. It
- 32:44Speaker 1: was working there, so yeah, he's he's there. We're giving
- 32:48Speaker 1: away these copies of Dave Campill's Texas Football magazine. We
- 32:51Speaker 1: would just to update our terms and conditions. We've We've
- 32:57Speaker 1: let everybody know that when you win these the super
- 33:04Speaker 1: promo kid a tone like them, we'll be in touch
- 33:08Speaker 1: with you. These magazines, if you win, are available for
- 33:16Speaker 1: pick up during business hours here at the as we
- 33:20Speaker 1: like to call it, the iHeart Compound, the Stride Hard
- 33:23Speaker 1: by the Colorado River and Lake Austin. Uh so uh
- 33:30Speaker 1: and you you know right off three sixty. But the
- 33:36Speaker 1: iHeart start stopped mailing them out a few years ago.
- 33:39Speaker 2: So for those who say, hey, can you mail me
- 33:41Speaker 2: but coming, I got to come and pick it up.
- 33:43Speaker 2: I have to do that.
- 33:44Speaker 1: And we've already had a whole bunch of winners come
- 33:46Speaker 1: by and pick up their copies. So yeah, come on
- 33:50Speaker 1: and say hello, yep, yep, and several have done that.
- 33:53Speaker 1: So you know, if you come in while we're on
- 33:55Speaker 1: the air. We can see when you walk in. We're
- 33:57Speaker 1: in what's called the fish Bowl studio, so it's so
- 34:00Speaker 1: rounded by windows, so you can see us and we
- 34:02Speaker 1: can see you. So there's that. Also, there is a
- 34:06Speaker 1: rule contest rule. You're only eligible to win once every
- 34:10Speaker 1: thirty days, So if you've already won talking to you, Riley,
- 34:17Speaker 1: you can't reenter. Riley actually won twice and then apparently
- 34:24Speaker 1: told Anton, hey, give the give the other copy to
- 34:28Speaker 1: my brother.
- 34:29Speaker 2: Can't do that. I can't.
- 34:30Speaker 1: And Anton didn't know it. Like I said, he's a
- 34:32Speaker 1: super promo kid, but just kid, he didn't know. There
- 34:35Speaker 1: is a policy, and there's a rule under iHeart you
- 34:38Speaker 1: can only win one prize. Whatever prizes we're given away
- 34:43Speaker 1: tickets to concerts or games, you can only win once
- 34:46Speaker 1: every thirty days. So that's why, Riley, we were unfortunately
- 34:52Speaker 1: unable to give you that second copy. We we gotta
- 34:55Speaker 1: hold enough back for everybody else to have a fair
- 34:58Speaker 1: shot at winning a copy. So that's how that works.
- 35:02Speaker 1: And like I said, we mix it both random entries
- 35:08Speaker 1: and also trivia entries, and we do that by using
- 35:12Speaker 1: the iHeartRadio app. So you take your smartphone, whether it's
- 35:17Speaker 1: an iPhone or an Android. You download the iHeartRadio app.
- 35:21Speaker 1: It's really easy to do and it's free. And then
- 35:24Speaker 1: you'll see in the search bar you'll go you'll enter
- 35:27Speaker 1: AM thirteen hundred the zone. It'll pop straight up. And
- 35:30Speaker 1: when it does, you see a couple of buttons. One's
- 35:32Speaker 1: a little white triangular arrowhead shape button that's to listen
- 35:35Speaker 1: to what's going on the airth it's the other button,
- 35:37Speaker 1: it's a red one with a white microphone. That's the
- 35:41Speaker 1: talkback microphone. When you push that button, it opens it
- 35:44Speaker 1: up like a voice mail to us a voice message.
- 35:47Speaker 2: Some people like.
- 35:48Speaker 1: To do that just to take the opportunity to leave
- 35:53Speaker 1: us a message, because we always say, you know, you
- 35:56Speaker 1: can reach us to voice your opinion or app ask
- 36:00Speaker 1: a question a couple of different ways.
- 36:03Speaker 2: One way you can do.
- 36:04Speaker 1: It is to reach us on the text line. So
- 36:10Speaker 1: I have to do is text the word texas follow
- 36:12Speaker 1: by your question and comment to eight one five to
- 36:16Speaker 1: three zero. So you text the word texas follow by
- 36:19Speaker 1: your question comment to eight one five to three zero,
- 36:22Speaker 1: and standard messaging and data rates may apply. But the
- 36:25Speaker 1: other way is through this talkback feature, and this is
- 36:28Speaker 1: the only way you can win in our contest is
- 36:32Speaker 1: using the talkback microphone. So you download the iHeart radio
- 36:35Speaker 1: app and then after you download the iHeart Radio app,
- 36:38Speaker 1: you search AM thirteen hundred the zone.
- 36:40Speaker 2: When it comes up.
- 36:42Speaker 1: Then you press that red button with the white microphone
- 36:47Speaker 1: and when you do that, it'll open up the talkback
- 36:50Speaker 1: microphone and you can leave us a message of up
- 36:54Speaker 1: to thirty seconds. Now for the purposes of the contest,
- 36:58Speaker 1: you don't need that long, like for example, the random
- 37:01Speaker 1: ntry thing we just did and we said be the
- 37:03Speaker 1: sixteenth person to do it. All you have to do
- 37:06Speaker 1: is say I want the magazine. That's it, And are
- 37:10Speaker 1: we at sixteen yet we just did it. I don't
- 37:12Speaker 1: know if we're.
- 37:12Speaker 4: El No, there's still a chance to win, so.
- 37:14Speaker 1: You got a shot. Even for those who already entered.
- 37:17Speaker 1: You can go back and inner. If you haven't won before,
- 37:20Speaker 1: you can go back in inner and try to get
- 37:22Speaker 1: back in the queue for that.
- 37:24Speaker 4: So there is that all right, So you can so
- 37:27Speaker 4: you can do that.
- 37:28Speaker 1: And if you just want to leave us a voice
- 37:30Speaker 1: message talking football or you know, whatever it might be.
- 37:35Speaker 1: For example, on the text sign somebody said I love
- 37:37Speaker 1: the burgers. They're talking about culvers because we were talking
- 37:39Speaker 1: about culvers.
- 37:40Speaker 4: The butterburger. The butter Burger, maybe I'll have to go
- 37:43Speaker 4: to that.
- 37:44Speaker 3: Your Georgetown culver is what I'm up doing soccer at
- 37:46Speaker 3: Southwestern this fall.
- 37:47Speaker 1: There you go, you would just you just cross I
- 37:51Speaker 1: thirty five off, well, you'd actually go up to Williams Drive,
- 37:55Speaker 1: then cross I thirty five and go up about five
- 37:58Speaker 1: miles up the road right day. It's right, it's it's
- 38:00Speaker 1: before you get the sun City up there, like I said.
- 38:03Speaker 1: But yeah, and they and so they they do this
- 38:06Speaker 1: thing every Tuesday or no, no, they do it once
- 38:09Speaker 1: a month and it's on a Tuesday for the for
- 38:12Speaker 1: the seniors, it's the Senior Night or whatever. So imagine
- 38:16Speaker 1: it's kind of funny walking in there, but you do.
- 38:19Speaker 1: We like we like the fish there, and I like
- 38:21Speaker 1: the burgers as well. But we go in there and
- 38:22Speaker 1: you get if you're of age, you aren't Jake. I
- 38:26Speaker 1: am who's going to turn down a free mini concrete, right,
- 38:30Speaker 1: So I just go ahet, Yeah, we'll get it and
- 38:33Speaker 1: and and get that after we eat. So we go
- 38:35Speaker 1: up there. But but I like, I like their menu with.
- 38:37Speaker 4: Uh, I've got it in the upper half of the
- 38:39Speaker 4: fast food burgers.
- 38:40Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, so there you go.
- 38:42Speaker 1: So anyway, if you are interested in entering to win
- 38:47Speaker 1: a copy of Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine, then uh,
- 38:52Speaker 1: you know, when we call for it on the random thing,
- 38:56Speaker 1: you just enter or on the trivia this hour, we're
- 38:58Speaker 1: going to do a trivia question. It'll come up a
- 39:00Speaker 1: little bit later on this hour, and that will just
- 39:04Speaker 1: simply call for the first correct response on the trivia
- 39:09Speaker 1: to win a copy of the magazine. And we did
- 39:11Speaker 1: it all last week, we're doing it all this week,
- 39:13Speaker 1: and we're doing it all next week, giving away a
- 39:15Speaker 1: copy of the magazine every day.
- 39:17Speaker 2: So we're doing that, and.
- 39:20Speaker 1: Then, like I said, we're also doing our SEC football
- 39:22Speaker 1: previews every day last week, this week, and next week.
- 39:26Speaker 4: Today was Vanderbilt. We had Andrew Alligretta on the last hour.
- 39:29Speaker 1: Tomorrow the other team in the volunteer State, the Tennessee Volunteers,
- 39:35Speaker 1: will be our preview discussion with Mike Keith, their play
- 39:38Speaker 1: by play voice. So that's coming up tomorrow and then
- 39:43Speaker 1: that will leave us one week left and five more
- 39:46Speaker 1: schools to preview after that. But tomorrow will be Tennessee
- 39:50Speaker 1: on that So I just wanted to get you up
- 39:53Speaker 1: to speed.
- 39:53Speaker 2: On all that.
- 39:54Speaker 1: Somebody, by the way, on the text alignement hashtag Bama
- 39:56Speaker 1: beaters talking about Vandy. Yeah, because the two years ago
- 39:59Speaker 1: and they had to big game. Et Centric got lexandered
- 40:01Speaker 1: a big game and two pick sixes for mil Realm.
- 40:04Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, big big win for that. So anyway, so
- 40:11Speaker 2: there it is.
- 40:13Speaker 1: Somebody asked you have the round Rock Express on the
- 40:16Speaker 1: Zone in Austin FC at almost the same time, which
- 40:20Speaker 1: station will carry the Texans. The answer is neither, because
- 40:24Speaker 1: we're not doing the preseason games for the Texans, so
- 40:29Speaker 1: it starts with the regular season. Our contract with them
- 40:32Speaker 1: starts with the regular season. Same thing with the Cowboys.
- 40:35Speaker 1: Cowboys games, not the preseason, regular season games. You'll hear
- 40:40Speaker 1: all the regular season games for the Cowboys, all regular
- 40:43Speaker 1: season games for the Texans. Speaking of the Texans, we'll
- 40:46Speaker 1: talk about them, but also we're going to hear from
- 40:49Speaker 1: a couple of long Warn't football players as well as
- 40:51Speaker 1: they get ready for their first scrimmage coming up on Saturday,
- 40:56Speaker 1: So we'll get to that coming up.
- 40:57Speaker 9: Well.
- 40:57Speaker 1: We continue on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred the Zone
- 40:59Speaker 1: at the Art Radio app.
- 41:02Speaker 8: One a Baby Yesterday in the four o'clock hour and
- 41:10Speaker 8: the Chechen don't stop Tuesday.
- 41:13Speaker 1: We always hear from the King George Strait, the King Country,
- 41:18Speaker 1: the King rock and Roll, Elvis, look at you hitting
- 41:23Speaker 1: this back, but don't be cruel.
- 41:25Speaker 3: And you know we always try and highlight moments in
- 41:27Speaker 3: music history or this day in music history on the show.
- 41:31Speaker 3: This song came out Craig seventy years ago today?
- 41:35Speaker 1: Did it really? Wow, I've got another anniversary happened. So
- 41:44Speaker 1: it's seventy years ago today. That would have been fifty six.
- 41:49Speaker 3: And nineteen fifty two. Yeah, Big Mama Thornton recorded Hound Dogs. Well,
- 41:55Speaker 3: there you go.
- 41:56Speaker 1: I'll have another anniversary get you a little bit later on.
- 42:02Speaker 1: So today's August thirteenth. If my memory, Sirs, were three
- 42:06Speaker 1: days away from the anniversary of Elvis's death, I think
- 42:10Speaker 1: it was August sixteenth, nineteen seventy seven, I believe was
- 42:17Speaker 1: the death of Elvis Presley.
- 42:18Speaker 2: And at the time.
- 42:21Speaker 1: That was one of those where were you when you
- 42:25Speaker 1: heard the news type moments. I remember in the houses
- 42:30Speaker 1: in North Carolina, had come out from being outside with
- 42:34Speaker 1: some friends when I just came in and it popped
- 42:36Speaker 1: in on the news that afternoon or something like that.
- 42:38Speaker 4: I think it was August sixteenth, seventy seven, that's.
- 42:41Speaker 1: Right, okay, Yeah, so three days away from that the
- 42:44Speaker 1: anniversary of Elvis' death. Do you know how old he was?
- 42:48Speaker 1: Wasn't he forty two? Yeah? Forty two? Wow? And been
- 42:55Speaker 1: gone obviously a long time since then. So I wanted
- 43:02Speaker 1: to hear from some longhorns. Rhen Biles is the linebacker
- 43:06Speaker 1: transferring in from pitt and has made an impression right
- 43:11Speaker 1: out of the gate, and he's let me guess, let
- 43:16Speaker 1: me guess, did Kirk Bowles ask this question? Not this
- 43:20Speaker 1: first one, okay, because I'm just looking at the slug
- 43:22Speaker 1: that you've written down for it, and the slug is
- 43:25Speaker 1: entitled what makes you a problem? I could hear Kirk
- 43:29Speaker 1: asking that question, but the question was put to Rhen
- 43:32Speaker 1: Biles what makes him a problem?
- 43:35Speaker 6: Really?
- 43:36Speaker 5: Just I like to like just refer to myself as
- 43:39Speaker 5: like a three level threat, Like I could cover good,
- 43:41Speaker 5: I could obviously play the running blitz, and I could
- 43:44Speaker 5: rush the passes. So like if you just put all
- 43:45Speaker 5: three of those together, like you say, you're gonna have
- 43:47Speaker 5: a problem on the field. And it's just been like
- 43:49Speaker 5: coach Nancy and him like just teaching me the game
- 43:52Speaker 5: and just teaching me like the little stuff. It's been
- 43:54Speaker 5: like helping my games just be like able to play
- 43:56Speaker 5: way faster. Like it's been like I can just see
- 43:59Speaker 5: the jump, like say, it's like obviously from the spring
- 44:02Speaker 5: to now it's been a big jump, which is me
- 44:04Speaker 5: just being with close Nanty Moore and just learning more
- 44:05Speaker 5: of the game so I can just play fast and
- 44:07Speaker 5: just be myself. So that's why what really been like
- 44:09Speaker 5: the biggest thing with that.
- 44:11Speaker 1: And he's talking about Johnny Nanton, who works with the linebackers,
- 44:14Speaker 1: and Johnny's a really fun.
- 44:16Speaker 2: Guy and an intense guy.
- 44:18Speaker 1: He's also the first coach I've ever seen do a
- 44:23Speaker 1: television interview and in shorts and flip flops.
- 44:28Speaker 4: He was he shot from the chest up.
- 44:30Speaker 1: Well, I know, we were in the we were in chairs.
- 44:32Speaker 1: Was on the set, you know, because it was a show. Okay, Yeah,
- 44:36Speaker 1: but you know here Stark says like he can't wait
- 44:38Speaker 1: to get into flip flops whenevere, whenever he gets the opportunity. Actually,
- 44:44Speaker 1: he changed out of the flip flops into shoes for
- 44:46Speaker 1: the interview, and as soon as we were done with
- 44:49Speaker 1: the segment of the show, he went back in and
- 44:51Speaker 1: hopped back into the flip flops.
- 44:52Speaker 3: So what you're saying is Texas doesn't have to worry
- 44:54Speaker 3: about him taking the Penn State job.
- 44:57Speaker 1: He's he's uh, he's a lot of fun and really
- 45:01Speaker 1: a fine coach as well. And so your bile's talking about,
- 45:03Speaker 1: So is there something new about biles game that coach
- 45:08Speaker 1: Danson taught him?
- 45:10Speaker 5: He really big on like run fits and knowing like
- 45:13Speaker 5: how formation speak to you, like like you know, you're
- 45:15Speaker 5: gonna get a lot of back back, like a lot
- 45:17Speaker 5: of split.
- 45:17Speaker 6: Zone college football.
- 45:18Speaker 5: So it's really just like you get a back back,
- 45:20Speaker 5: just be able to shoot that gap and just shoot
- 45:22Speaker 5: it fast because you know, like that's gonna be your
- 45:23Speaker 5: gap that you fall to.
- 45:24Speaker 6: It's just been like little stuff like.
- 45:25Speaker 7: That for real.
- 45:27Speaker 2: Okay, all right, Uh, that's something there.
- 45:30Speaker 1: He's he's had a lot of success in picking off
- 45:36Speaker 1: passes even bringing some back as well.
- 45:38Speaker 2: So where does the athleticism come from and doing that?
- 45:42Speaker 9: Yeah?
- 45:42Speaker 5: High school, I played running back, receiver, I played I
- 45:45Speaker 5: did a lot of wildcat, and I play a free
- 45:47Speaker 5: safety my senior year. So really I just like started
- 45:50Speaker 5: playing linebacker when I got to college.
- 45:52Speaker 6: My freshman year. So my whole life I played often.
- 45:55Speaker 5: So when I get the ball, I ain't like, well,
- 45:57Speaker 5: I know because mustad He's say a lot sideline left,
- 46:00Speaker 5: sideline rast our.
- 46:01Speaker 6: Only defensive plays. But you're gonna have to be mad
- 46:03Speaker 6: at me because I'm trying to score the boy every time.
- 46:04Speaker 6: About get it?
- 46:06Speaker 1: Now, you get into the deep dive questions that those
- 46:08Speaker 1: guys asked, like forty time and uh he added weight?
- 46:12Speaker 2: Did adding weight slow him down this summer?
- 46:15Speaker 6: Uh No, I don't feel like it slowed me down.
- 46:17Speaker 6: And I feel like because Beck then he did a.
- 46:19Speaker 5: Great job of like just putting on me at the
- 46:21Speaker 5: right time, the way, at the right time. And you know,
- 46:23Speaker 5: it's a speed based programs were working on speed every time.
- 46:26Speaker 5: And I think I'm mom for sure, like a four
- 46:28Speaker 5: to fourth for sure at the combine, like no doubt
- 46:30Speaker 5: about it.
- 46:31Speaker 1: Okay, how is practice felt different than say when he
- 46:36Speaker 1: was at pet and practice, how it's hit and it
- 46:39Speaker 1: has helped him prepare for the scrimmage?
- 46:41Speaker 5: Oh yeah, it's definitely different because like thudding is cool
- 46:44Speaker 5: and all, but like thudding is obviously harder. But obviously
- 46:46Speaker 5: you got to be a good thunder to be a
- 46:47Speaker 5: good tackler, but like when it's time to tackle his way, like,
- 46:50Speaker 5: I just feel more free, Like you can take somebody
- 46:53Speaker 5: down so many different ways and do so many more
- 46:55Speaker 5: different things. But obviously when you do it, you gotta
- 46:57Speaker 5: be smart. Again when it does night from the side,
- 46:59Speaker 5: thust mine from the back. So it's kind of a
- 47:00Speaker 5: little harder. Like when it's live. When we in a scrimmage,
- 47:03Speaker 5: it's full go, like you could get the guy to
- 47:06Speaker 5: the ground.
- 47:06Speaker 1: Okay, all right, clearly it's been established he's fast. Can
- 47:10Speaker 1: he outrun wide receivers and running backs?
- 47:13Speaker 8: Uh?
- 47:14Speaker 6: See, Nah, our receivers are running backs. They pretty faster.
- 47:16Speaker 5: I ain't gonna lie, but I could definitely keep up
- 47:18Speaker 5: with them, Like I ain't gonna ever get dusted. Like
- 47:19Speaker 5: if I'm going one of themselves, I'm definitely gonna keep up.
- 47:22Speaker 5: They's just gonna dust me. But I ain't gonna like
- 47:23Speaker 5: them boys.
- 47:24Speaker 6: If we've raised they gonna beat me them boys as fast.
- 47:27Speaker 1: It's nothing like true Hodnty there, how about the differences.
- 47:31Speaker 1: The biggest difference that he's noticed from playing it pitt
- 47:34Speaker 1: to playing for taxes.
- 47:35Speaker 5: It's just a lot of more like it's a lot
- 47:37Speaker 5: of more ball players like on his team, like in
- 47:39Speaker 5: front of you, you got you got guys like real
- 47:42Speaker 5: life guys, first team all you got all Americans at
- 47:44Speaker 5: all levels, real throw on his team. At Pittsburgh, we
- 47:47Speaker 5: had some guys definitely, but we didn't have like as
- 47:49Speaker 5: many guys as like as we do here.
- 47:52Speaker 6: Phil Frest really just been the biggest.
- 47:55Speaker 2: Okay, that's you know, that's a big part of it.
- 47:58Speaker 1: And you know, we hear him talking about, you know,
- 48:03Speaker 1: the differences in Pittsburgh and Texas and differences in terms
- 48:08Speaker 1: of teammates and differences in terms of the coaching staff
- 48:13Speaker 1: all of those things that make transferring into the Texas
- 48:17Speaker 1: program a little bit different.
- 48:19Speaker 2: So among those.
- 48:21Speaker 1: Things, uh, he was asking, what's what's the differences when
- 48:25Speaker 1: he's getting ready and having to go up against a
- 48:28Speaker 1: guy like Crier that's.
- 48:31Speaker 5: My guy, juice man. He been me and him, like
- 48:33Speaker 5: we both came in as transfers. We both knew we
- 48:35Speaker 5: had to learn the system, We had to like get everything.
- 48:38Speaker 6: Like down pack.
- 48:39Speaker 5: Like it's been like it's really just been like growing
- 48:41Speaker 5: paints for me and him because we both like in
- 48:43Speaker 5: the spring, we really wasn't like all the way all
- 48:45Speaker 5: the way comfortable with the scheme and stuff because we
- 48:47Speaker 5: both just transferred in New DC for both of us.
- 48:50Speaker 5: But like we just been keep learning together and together,
- 48:52Speaker 5: like we just keep like every day like we used
- 48:54Speaker 5: to watch film like after practicing stuff like this breakdown
- 48:58Speaker 5: stuff because obviously it's been me and him like in
- 49:00Speaker 5: the first group for a minute, meet him and Brass.
- 49:02Speaker 5: So we just really just been breaking down stuff, seeing
- 49:05Speaker 5: like different things we could.
- 49:06Speaker 6: Do, Like he always Me and him, Like it's like
- 49:08Speaker 6: a thing we got like if.
- 49:10Speaker 5: We see something like we know we're gonna get because
- 49:12Speaker 5: of coach Nanty, Like he teaches a lot of stuff
- 49:15Speaker 5: like we always gonna use our stress and abilities, like
- 49:17Speaker 5: we never gonna put each other in a spot that
- 49:19Speaker 5: we know that's like our weakness or something. So me
- 49:21Speaker 5: and him we really got like a good little connection
- 49:23Speaker 5: on the field.
- 49:24Speaker 6: Definitely.
- 49:24Speaker 1: Yeah, Remember both are transfers. I mean not only as
- 49:27Speaker 1: Biles are transferred from PIT and both transfers from ACC schools,
- 49:31Speaker 1: with Justin Cryer having transferred in from Florida State as well.
- 49:34Speaker 2: What attracted Biles to come into Texas.
- 49:37Speaker 5: What attracting me was when I hit the portal, My
- 49:40Speaker 5: biggest thing was like it's my last year in college football. Obviously,
- 49:44Speaker 5: I'm trying to win, Like I'm trying to win as
- 49:46Speaker 5: much as I can. Like I'm tired of just having
- 49:49Speaker 5: to sit home in December and January and stuff and
- 49:52Speaker 5: watch big games on TV, like only be a part
- 49:54Speaker 5: of that game. I only be a part of the
- 49:55Speaker 5: big games. I want to win the national championship, Like
- 49:58Speaker 5: that's my biggest goal, and that's coming here. I feel
- 50:01Speaker 5: like I could do that for sure. So did he
- 50:03Speaker 5: visit other schools when he was in the portal.
- 50:05Speaker 6: Yeah, I visited two other schools.
- 50:08Speaker 5: I went to Colorado and I went to Michigan, and
- 50:11Speaker 5: then I was supposed to go to Miami the day
- 50:13Speaker 5: after I was supposed to come with the same day
- 50:15Speaker 5: I was supposed to come here.
- 50:16Speaker 6: I was supposed to Miami that next day, but I
- 50:18Speaker 6: ended up just committing here. So I need to go
- 50:20Speaker 6: to Miami.
- 50:20Speaker 2: And one more from Rahee Bios as well.
- 50:23Speaker 1: How of the surrounding players he talked about, He said,
- 50:26Speaker 1: when it was at pitt you know, we had players,
- 50:29Speaker 1: but Texas has more of the really really good player.
- 50:32Speaker 1: So how has you know, working around players of that
- 50:37Speaker 1: caliber made him a better football player?
- 50:40Speaker 6: Oh, it made me a lot better.
- 50:41Speaker 5: Like I like just like the way they conduct, like
- 50:45Speaker 5: the way they hold themself to a standard, the way
- 50:48Speaker 5: they practice.
- 50:49Speaker 6: Like you obviously you got to meet that standard and you.
- 50:51Speaker 5: Got to be a part of Like I feel like
- 50:53Speaker 5: I'm want them top tier drives, so I got to
- 50:55Speaker 5: do the extra stuff like and they they do it.
- 50:57Speaker 6: So it's not isn't it, Like it's not hard to
- 51:00Speaker 6: like they gonna do it, so I.
- 51:01Speaker 1: Know I gotta do it and be okay. All right,
- 51:05Speaker 1: And we'll hear some more from Reem Biles coming up
- 51:07Speaker 1: the next hour. Couple of NFL preseason preseason beginning tonight
- 51:12Speaker 1: is one of those full circle moments tonight for the
- 51:16Speaker 1: Packers and Steelers when they play, because you know, you
- 51:23Speaker 1: think about Aaron Rodgers getting ready to start his final
- 51:27Speaker 1: season in the NFL. Of course, is the Steelers quarterback
- 51:30Speaker 1: going against the Packers, and Aaron's head coach, Mike McCarthy
- 51:35Speaker 1: started with him in Green Bay. Didn't had to stop
- 51:38Speaker 1: off in Dallas before going to Pittsburgh afterwards, So you
- 51:40Speaker 1: have that going on to night. Texans played tonight in
- 51:44Speaker 1: their preseason oper at home against the Los Angeles Chargers.
- 51:49Speaker 1: And one other one Arizona is playing Las Vegas. Now,
- 51:53Speaker 1: remember the Cardinals actually already have a preseason game under
- 51:57Speaker 1: their belt. They played in the Hall of Fame Game
- 51:58Speaker 1: a week ago, losing in the last seconds to Carolina
- 52:02Speaker 1: when Haines King they had the lunging over for the touchdown,
- 52:07Speaker 1: diving over for the game winning touchdown on that Carson
- 52:10Speaker 1: Beck looked really good in that game. But Carson Beck
- 52:13Speaker 1: is not going to play tonight. He had a rib
- 52:16Speaker 1: injury sustained in that Hall of Fame game. So what
- 52:20Speaker 1: it's going to prevent happening is a rematch of the
- 52:24Speaker 1: National Championship quarterbacks Carson.
- 52:27Speaker 4: Beck f Nanda Mendoza.
- 52:29Speaker 2: So that's not going to happen.
- 52:32Speaker 1: It's not considered to be a serious injury, and they
- 52:36Speaker 1: said there's no long term worry about the injury. It
- 52:40Speaker 1: happened in the first quarter when he picked up four
- 52:42Speaker 1: yards on a third and three run. He practiced through
- 52:46Speaker 1: the sword in this all week, but the team decided
- 52:48Speaker 1: to keep him out tonight as a precaution and will
- 52:50Speaker 1: allow more time to heal. So no rematch with Fernando Mendoza,
- 52:57Speaker 1: who will definitely play tonight.
- 52:59Speaker 2: It'll be his first NFL preseason game.
- 53:02Speaker 1: The Cardinals had previously previously said Jacoby Brissette would start
- 53:08Speaker 1: the game, and uh, there's number three there, Clayton tune. Yes,
- 53:13Speaker 1: that's right, and Kirk Cousins will get the start for
- 53:16Speaker 1: the Raiders. But us as it stands, uh, we'll see
- 53:23Speaker 1: Mendoza get an opportunity to play in the game tonight,
- 53:26Speaker 1: but Carson Beck will not play in the game tonight.
- 53:29Speaker 2: All right, Up.
- 53:29Speaker 1: Next, we hear from another long warners we shift to
- 53:32Speaker 1: the offensive side of the ball when we continue on
- 53:34Speaker 1: thirteen hunderd the zone stop BALLA.
- 53:58Speaker 2: This has been a song they've.
- 54:01Speaker 1: Either open their show with or like second or third,
- 54:05Speaker 1: help us on its way. Little River BANDA seven years
- 54:09Speaker 1: there one of their big hits. As we continue here
- 54:13Speaker 1: on a Thursday after he was there, any specific reason
- 54:16Speaker 1: you selected it or is there you were just.
- 54:18Speaker 3: Like since you went to that concert about a month
- 54:22Speaker 3: back and we did our show kind of themed around them.
- 54:25Speaker 3: This song has been just scratching an itch in my brain.
- 54:28Speaker 4: Okay, it's good.
- 54:31Speaker 2: That's good.
- 54:32Speaker 6: Like that.
- 54:33Speaker 1: You know, for some people, their favorite Little River Band
- 54:36Speaker 1: song might be lonesome loser, uh. For for others it
- 54:44Speaker 1: might be cool change which is which is one of
- 54:48Speaker 1: their anthems. But they had a lot of good ones.
- 54:51Speaker 1: They they definitely had a lot reminiscing is one, uh,
- 54:57Speaker 1: happy anniversary. It is one that I didn't even realize
- 55:02Speaker 1: it to. Our good friend John and Danny, who was
- 55:04Speaker 1: a finger producer for ESPN Radio, pointed it out, and
- 55:09Speaker 1: happy anniversary is not about It's not about a man
- 55:15Speaker 1: wishing his love interests a happy anniversary. He's marking the
- 55:20Speaker 1: anniversary of them being separated, gone for five years. But
- 55:26Speaker 1: in concert, they'll tell you that, Hey, for those of you,
- 55:31Speaker 1: that's a good thing. You're happy, and you do take
- 55:34Speaker 1: it as that. For those of you on the other
- 55:36Speaker 1: side take it that way. But anyway, John and Danny
- 55:39Speaker 1: pointed out it has one of the best bass rips
- 55:42Speaker 1: in it, and I didn't even realize it.
- 55:46Speaker 2: It's a lot of time. I mean, pull it up.
- 55:47Speaker 1: You'll hear it here, and we're gonna hear from longer
- 55:50Speaker 1: here long. We're here in just a few moments, and
- 55:53Speaker 1: we'll have a trivia question coming up to win a
- 55:58Speaker 1: copy of Dave Camil's Texas Tooball. It's loaded up here
- 56:00Speaker 1: all right, let me know and you got it here
- 56:03Speaker 1: he points, He goes, it's got one of the best
- 56:05Speaker 1: bass rifts. All right, first you have this, it just
- 56:14Speaker 1: sounds really cool and concert of that, all right, listen
- 56:17Speaker 1: to this right here. Yeah, I love that have bass
- 56:24Speaker 1: rift off of that.
- 56:26Speaker 2: But and John would know a good bass rift when
- 56:29Speaker 2: he hears it there, you know he's a musician himself.
- 56:32Speaker 2: But that was off of that. It's it's an interesting
- 56:38Speaker 2: assault said, I'm glad you found somebody new. That's good.
- 56:42Speaker 2: You know it's been five years.
- 56:43Speaker 7: Hey. Great.
- 56:44Speaker 9: All I got to say is.
- 56:48Speaker 4: People that listen to the verses are like, wait a second, yeah,
- 56:52Speaker 4: and uh.
- 56:54Speaker 1: And when I looked back to what we had and
- 56:56Speaker 1: I see that there were.
- 56:56Speaker 2: Some good times.
- 56:59Speaker 4: When I'm counting many bad pretty good.
- 57:05Speaker 2: Yeah, so.
- 57:08Speaker 1: It's a good song in concert as well. Had a
- 57:11Speaker 1: question on the text line. Somebody asking on the text
- 57:16Speaker 1: line a long time Texas Rangers fan said, you told
- 57:19Speaker 1: your listeners how you got and came up with your
- 57:22Speaker 1: call this say good night to this when it just
- 57:24Speaker 1: kind of happened in a.
- 57:24Speaker 2: High school football game many years ago.
- 57:26Speaker 1: And it just and I never planned to say it,
- 57:28Speaker 1: but it just comes out if the moment fits or
- 57:31Speaker 1: whatever he goes. Do you know how Eric Nadell, the
- 57:34Speaker 1: Hall of Fame voice of the Rangers, came up with
- 57:36Speaker 1: his call back back back to the rat looks up,
- 57:38Speaker 1: that ball's history.
- 57:39Speaker 2: I heard him explain it one time.
- 57:41Speaker 1: And it happened right after he took over the lead
- 57:44Speaker 1: play by play voice duties from the late Mark Holtz
- 57:48Speaker 1: when Holts elected not to stay with the radio network
- 57:54Speaker 1: when they switched flagship stations and did some television before
- 57:58Speaker 1: he became ill.
- 57:59Speaker 4: And Eric said that it happened much in the same way.
- 58:03Speaker 1: It was kind of organically he was calling, calling it
- 58:07Speaker 1: a home run, and all of a sudden, that ball's history.
- 58:09Speaker 1: Because we used to say, you know your history, or
- 58:11Speaker 1: that's history, you know whatever, and so it had gone
- 58:14Speaker 1: into history because of the home run.
- 58:15Speaker 2: So that's that's as I remember it. How he came
- 58:19Speaker 2: up with his home run call.
- 58:21Speaker 1: Okay, let's let's go back to some Longhorns sound and
- 58:26Speaker 1: we heard from Raheem Biles on the defensive side to
- 58:30Speaker 1: the offensive side of the football. The anchor in the
- 58:35Speaker 1: middle of the offensive line, obviously, Trevor Gooseby is really
- 58:39Speaker 1: kind of from that left tackle spot. The huge leadership
- 58:42Speaker 1: anchor there off the blind side of the quarterback, but
- 58:44Speaker 1: Robertson there at center.
- 58:46Speaker 2: Was asked what he feels about Cole Hudson His team
- 58:49Speaker 2: had who admit at center and also at guard. How
- 58:51Speaker 2: does he feel about Hudson coming back?
- 58:54Speaker 9: Yeah, I mean I think, first off, that has some
- 58:56Speaker 9: great depth. You know, obviously Cole's played a lot of
- 58:58Speaker 9: football here. I'm really happy to have him back, you know,
- 59:02Speaker 9: like you said, you know, we're real close and uh
- 59:05Speaker 9: have been you know since high school. So glad to
- 59:08Speaker 9: have him back, and uh, you know, excited to excited
- 59:11Speaker 9: for him back in the room and and uh and
- 59:13Speaker 9: compete all right.
- 59:14Speaker 1: Uh. Connor was asked about, uh, the expectations start has
- 59:18Speaker 1: to this offensive line and for that matters comment that
- 59:22Speaker 1: he feels every position is better.
- 59:24Speaker 9: I mean, I think I think it just starts with
- 59:26Speaker 9: with the off season and and you know how we
- 59:28Speaker 9: kind of went about that and.
- 59:30Speaker 6: Just taking it one day at a time. Right now.
- 59:32Speaker 9: You know, obviously big expectations, but you know we got
- 59:35Speaker 9: to keep working every day to to kind of get
- 59:38Speaker 9: get closer and closer to that.
- 59:39Speaker 1: Okay, all right, Next was asked how can he tell
- 59:43Speaker 1: can he tell he's a veteran, so we should be
- 59:46Speaker 1: able to get a good feel for it, a sense
- 59:48Speaker 1: if the offensive line is improving, uh, and and are
- 59:51Speaker 1: the improving day by day on the practice field.
- 59:55Speaker 9: Yeah, I think the physicality for sure. You know, on
- 59:58Speaker 9: both offense and offense, you can you can kind of
- 1:00:01Speaker 9: feel it.
- 1:00:02Speaker 8: Uh.
- 1:00:03Speaker 9: You know, Team run has been a lot more physical.
- 1:00:06Speaker 9: The live periods, you know, the few that we've had
- 1:00:08Speaker 9: so far have been have been real physical, and and
- 1:00:12Speaker 9: the backs have been you know, obviously helping.
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: Out with that.
- 1:00:14Speaker 6: So I'm really excited about the physicality.
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: Robertson is one of those guys who had crossed trained
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: at different offensive line position, so he was asked about
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: the fact that Brandon Baker's moving inside from tackle to
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: guard and what are the biggest adjustments that he figures
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: that Baker's encountering and how can he help.
- 1:00:35Speaker 9: I think the I think the biggest adjustment is just
- 1:00:37Speaker 9: the space thing. Probably, you know, he's one one gap
- 1:00:42Speaker 9: closer to the ball. You know, he's he's a little
- 1:00:44Speaker 9: closer to the to the defensive lotman he's gonna be
- 1:00:46Speaker 9: playing against.
- 1:00:48Speaker 7: You know.
- 1:00:49Speaker 6: The good thing about Brandon is he's a really smart player.
- 1:00:52Speaker 9: You know, I said this last time I was up here,
- 1:00:54Speaker 9: But I think the transition for him was was kind
- 1:00:56Speaker 9: of you know, seamless to some degree.
- 1:00:58Speaker 6: So he's done.
- 1:01:00Speaker 9: Great with that, but just every day, you know, trying
- 1:01:02Speaker 9: to trying to improve and see what we can do better,
- 1:01:06Speaker 9: and you know, the experience obviously playing next to them,
- 1:01:09Speaker 9: we'll we'll get better as we go, and.
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: That means getting better himself playing at center. So what
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: elements of his game does he feel that still need
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: a little growth area for him to max out what
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: he can do.
- 1:01:24Speaker 6: Yeah, I think run blocking.
- 1:01:25Speaker 9: I mean, you know, I think that's something you can
- 1:01:26Speaker 9: always improve the physicality of the you know, finishing of
- 1:01:29Speaker 9: the ball, and then just just being a master of
- 1:01:33Speaker 9: the game, you know, trying to trying to understand the
- 1:01:35Speaker 9: defense as well as I can, you know, spend some
- 1:01:38Speaker 9: time this offseason really trying to dial that in and
- 1:01:41Speaker 9: you know, just just perfect my craft, you know, and
- 1:01:43Speaker 9: every and every way I can.
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: Now several long words were made available after practice today,
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: and one of those is the defensive end the edge
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: preussuer Lance Jackson. We're gonna hear from him tomorrow. But
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: Robertson was asked about Lance Jackson in the offseason he's.
- 1:01:57Speaker 9: Had Yeah, I mean, I mean, you know, I don't
- 1:01:59Speaker 9: block him as the tackles and guards, but but yeah,
- 1:02:02Speaker 9: last is a pro. I mean, you know, he's got
- 1:02:04Speaker 9: a great body, great great work ethic. You know, he's
- 1:02:07Speaker 9: had a really good offseason. So I'm excited to see
- 1:02:10Speaker 9: what he can.
- 1:02:10Speaker 8: Do this fall.
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: Okay, all right, So.
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: Robertson's at center, but he's played at guard. Cole Hudson
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: is back, he's played garden center. If there's one spot
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: on the offensive line that's still kind of undetermined and
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: may go down. Uh, you know, after these scrimmages, there's
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: the scrimmage this week, there's is scrimmage the following week
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: to determine who might be the starter at left guard,
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: because at the right tackle, Melvinciani, the Wake Forest transfer,
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: appears to have settled in there. Obviously, Trevor Gooseby's in
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: at left tackle, but at left guard, got a couple
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: of guys. Uh, you you have Lawrence Seymour, first team
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: Conference USA last year, Western Kentucky transferred in, Dylan Sikorski
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: transferred in from Oregon State.
- 1:02:59Speaker 4: Now all.
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: You have Hudson working back into the mix as well,
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: so does that mean the responsibilities for kind of Robertson
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: will change, be it guard or center based on what
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: happens at left guard.
- 1:03:14Speaker 4: No, I don't.
- 1:03:15Speaker 9: I don't think that really changes my I mean, my
- 1:03:17Speaker 9: responsibility is to is to communicate as best I can
- 1:03:19Speaker 9: and get the get the whatever five are out there,
- 1:03:22Speaker 9: get them on the same page. So you know, obviously
- 1:03:25Speaker 9: some moving pieces, but I think you know, all those guys,
- 1:03:28Speaker 9: all those guys are doing a great job right now,
- 1:03:30Speaker 9: So just trying to get comfortable with.
- 1:03:32Speaker 6: Them all and you know, see how it shakes out.
- 1:03:33Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: As I mentioned, one of those candidates for that left
- 1:03:36Speaker 2: card spot is Lawrence Seymour six two three twenty last
- 1:03:40Speaker 2: year playing at Western Kentucky and so he was an
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: All Conference USA player. So Robertson was asked, can you
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: tell the difference there of that experience exhibited for a
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: guy like Seymour.
- 1:03:53Speaker 9: I mean, it shows up in all all areas just
- 1:03:57Speaker 9: as comfortability, and you know, obviously this is the first
- 1:03:59Speaker 9: time he really gone against our defense, so for him
- 1:04:03Speaker 9: to come in and the transition be pretty pretty easy.
- 1:04:07Speaker 9: I think that obviously, you know, with experience that kind
- 1:04:10Speaker 9: of that helps out. So he's done a great job.
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: All right, we'll hear more from the center kind of
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: Robertson coming up next hour. We'll be back to wrap
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: by b hour number two here on thirteen under the Zone,
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: third and final hour of the program here on Sports
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: Radio AM thirteen hundred of the Zone here on a
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: Thursday afternoon. If you're staying cool, dry and comfortable here
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: in the Greater Austin area, triple digits all this week,
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: triple digits probably for the foreseeable future. So, Jake Herman,
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: are you like excited about the face first of all
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: your duties on Saturdays this fall for our long on
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: game day broadcast. I mean you'll be what out there
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: on the site with the guys.
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: Is that is that the deal? So you'll get to
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: soak up all that nice warm sunshine, right?
- 1:05:10Speaker 3: Oh yeah, and sometimes out there before the sun. Doesn't
- 1:05:13Speaker 3: sound like we have as many eleven am kickoffs this year, right,
- 1:05:16Speaker 3: So sometimes out there before the sun. But we'll be
- 1:05:19Speaker 3: setting up as far as I know, we're in the
- 1:05:21Speaker 3: same spot. But we'll get you information on that a
- 1:05:23Speaker 3: little closer to time. And yeah, I being the on
- 1:05:27Speaker 3: site engineer making sure everything flows smoothly. And making sure
- 1:05:30Speaker 3: everybody can hear everything and this year maybe contributing on
- 1:05:34Speaker 3: here a little bit for that.
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, you know, keeping people updated on other games
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: and some other stuff going on as well. The reason
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: why I said that is you'll be ready to roll
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: on September fifth for a two thirty pm kickoff against
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: the Texas State Bobcats.
- 1:05:52Speaker 4: Craig.
- 1:05:52Speaker 3: If my ac struggles this summer didn't prepare me for that,
- 1:05:56Speaker 3: then what was it all for.
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: That's a good point. You were able to get through it,
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: So that's a good thing. It's going to be warm,
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: But today is the day to get a little bit closer.
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: Now we are you know, it's actually sixteen days sixteen
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: days until kickoff for college football overall with the zero Yeah.
- 1:06:29Speaker 4: Oh, you call it the zero week.
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: That's what many are calling it, just like what they
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: called in the UIL for years when they first went
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: to one open date in the schedule.
- 1:06:39Speaker 2: It used to be for decades generations.
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: Ten games in the regular season in high school football
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: in Texas, ten straight weeks, usually starting the first Friday
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: in September and going to like the first Friday in November,
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: and then they changed it probably been about fifteen years ago,
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: maybe a little bit longer, and added what was called
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: a zero week, was an option week. You could play
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: that first week and then take a buye later the week.
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: And at first it was met with a little bit
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: of skepticism. I would say the first year, maybe one
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: fifth of the schools went on a zero week. Now
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: you would have to search to maybe find five total
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: high schools that don't play the first week and go
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: to and that's only because of scheduling quirks, not you know,
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: they've odd number of teams in the district and can't
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: get enough non district opponents something along those lines.
- 1:07:40Speaker 4: The teams want that extra buy oh yeah, they want it.
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: They want it.
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: And I've asked a lot of coaches down through the
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: years about that. You know, if you could have the buye,
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: when would you want it. The vast majority of them
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: say they would like it the week before they start
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: district play. Let's say you're in an eighteen district. You know,
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: three non district games and seven district games, and a
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: lot of them would like to have that before. Others
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: like the momentum carrying into district played and would rather
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: have it like four or five weeks. Some coaches, being
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: incredibly honest, have said, depends on how we're doing at
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: the time, you know, and what the schedule's like. If
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: if you're playing those teams that you might think about
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: scheduling for your homecoming ones that you think you're going
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: to defeat the way the schedule draw works up, then yeah,
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: after that. There are some who favored loved having the bye.
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: They would play ten straight weeks and then have the
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: bye week eleven the week after the end of the
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: regular season before the playoffs start.
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: So that's happened as well.
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: But college football went to it a few years ago
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: and called it the zero week, And you can play
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: that first week, and then of course, obviously you're going
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: to wind up having two byes during the course of
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: the season, one probably the week after that and after
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: that first game, and then you're going to have one
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: later on in the season. The long runes have their
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: one bye on October third, because they start on September fifth.
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: But say for a program like a TCU who is
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: playing North Carolina in Dublin, Ireland, as a result of that,
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: they have to take their bye, have to take two
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: bys as a result of that. So the horn Frogs.
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: Well's just start with North Carolina. They are just taking
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: one by on September fifth and then another one on
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: September twenty sixth, So they take two early byes as
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: a result of that. Tc And that's why I say,
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: if you have to take your bye, or if you're
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: playing on that zero week, then you have to take
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: that buye. You have to take one by early and
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: then one by later as a result of that. And
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: so TCU has a bye the week after playing North
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: Carolina on September fifth, and then they have one on
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: the Saturday of Texas OU October tenth, which is probably
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: just as well because.
- 1:10:18Speaker 6: That week.
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: In the state of Texas, kind of the center of
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: the college football universe in the state of Texas is
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: in Dallas on the Texas OU game.
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: It just is It works out.
- 1:10:31Speaker 7: Now.
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: I would submit to you this that the center of
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: the college football universe in the state of Texas might
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: be in Dallas. And SMU also has it's bye week
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: on October ten, so neither SMU nor TCU is playing
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: at home on the Saturday of Texas OU. But that
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: Saturday for Texas OU also happens to be the same
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: day as Georgia Alabama in Tuscaloosa, So maybe it's better
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: to say the center of the college football universe is
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: in the SEC overall. Because of those two matchups, there
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: are some other big matchups that day.
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: In fact, there's one, let me make sure I got
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: this right in the Big Ten.
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: I think there's a big matchup in the Big Ten
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: and it involves I would say USC. I know Nebraska
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: is hosting Indiana that day, but that's not looked at
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: as being on the same level. Penn State USC is
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: that day, so that could be a big game as well.
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: Off of that, there was a preseason poll, a preseason
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: college football team released today by ESPN. Now we see
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: all of these Football Riders Association aps on and so forth.
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: ESPN polls its college football panelists and writers Eli Letterman
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: and Max Olson put it together, but it was the
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: compilation of all of those on the ESPN's preseason list
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: of their writers. So they had a postseason All American
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: team with three players returning from that Leonard Moore, the
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: cornerback former round Rock Dragon from Notre Dame, Indiana, offensive
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: tackle Carter Smith, and Ohio state wide receiver Jeremiah Smith.
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: Texas leads the preseason All American team with five first
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: team selections and that's without arch Maanning making the cut,
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: followed by George Miami, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Texas
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: Tech with two weeks. So here's what they have offense.
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: Their quarterback is Julian Sayan of Ohio State, so he
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: is and the second team quarterback with CJ. Carr of
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: Notre Dame. The running back Kawan Lacey of Ole. Miss
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: second team is a mod Hardy in Missouri.
- 1:13:02Speaker 4: Now.
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: We had Mike Kelly, the voice of the Missouri Tigers,
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: on a couple of days ago, and he said they
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: still don't know for sure when a mod Hardy we'll
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: be able to practice again falling after the gunshot incident there,
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: but they're hoping that they do expect him back, but
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: the question is when can you start practicing to get
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: ready to go. The other running back is Jaden Ball
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: from Florida, with the second teamer being Mark Fletcher from Miami.
- 1:13:30Speaker 4: I love Fletcher's fun to watch, Yeah, say he's the
- 1:13:33Speaker 4: second team there.
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: Wide receivers, one of them Jeremiah Smith of Ohio State,
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: with Charlie Becker on the second team the other Cam Coleman,
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: and he put the video of the Coleman catch of
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: course there, with Nick Marsh of Indiana behind him on
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: the second team, tied end Terrence Carter Junior of Texas
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: Tech second team Tredez Green of LSU. Chris Blayer was
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: talking about him yesterday and what a weapon he can be.
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: Offensive tackle Trevor goosby Texas, Jordan Seaton of LSU on
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: the second team at that one offensive tackle spot, the
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: other offensive tackle Carter Smith of Indiana returning after the
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: postseason All American list, and Trevor Lauch of Iowa on
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: the second team behind him. At the guard spots, Cade
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: Piper of Iowa with Greg Johnson in Minnesota at one
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: guard spot, Anthony Knapp of Notre Dame with Evan tengas
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: Dall of Cincinnati at the other one, and the center
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: Drew Bobo of Georgia and the Apani La Lulu of Oregon.
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: The backup at center. The r purpose man is Malachi
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: Tony of Miami. So last year as a freshman, he
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: had twelve hundred receiving yards, one hundred and thirteen rushing
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: yards two hundred ninety eight pump returning yards and threw
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: two touchdown passes as well.
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: So he is a sophomore. He's the all purpose. The
- 1:15:01Speaker 2: second team all purpose is Jacoby Williams of Texas Tech.
- 1:15:05Speaker 2: The defense on one edge first team Colin Simmons at Texas.
- 1:15:10Speaker 2: Second team would be Anthony Smith at defensive tackle, a
- 1:15:13Speaker 2: Maury Washington of Oregon, Will Eccles of Ole Miss at
- 1:15:18Speaker 2: the second team at the other defensive tackle, Mad Moten
- 1:15:22Speaker 2: senior Miami aj Holmes of Texas Tech behind him and
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: on the other edge Dylan Stewart of South Carolina, John
- 1:15:28Speaker 2: Henry Dalia, Michigan.
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: Behind him linebacker. We just heard from him, and we'll
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: hear some more from him later this hour. Raheem Miles
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: of Texas. By the way, you may have noticed, well,
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: I don't want to spoil it for you.
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: We'll let you.
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: We'll clue you in on why his name is pronounced
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: the way it is here in a few minutes. Leijah
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: Hardy of Indiana backup there at another linebacker, Spike Xavior
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: Atkins of Auburn, Kip Lewis of Oklahoma the second team,
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: and the third linebacker Sammy Brown of Clemson with weeks
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: of LSU the second team. There the cornerbacks Leonard Moore
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: as I mentioned that Kid's good, the former round Rock
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: Dragon for Notre Dame with Brandon Finney Junior of Oregon
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: in one corner spot. Bryce Pollock Texas Tech at a corner,
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: Kelly Jones Misissippi State the second teamer at safety, kJ
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: Bold of Georgia, a Maury Farrell of Indiana at one
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: safety spot. Ty Bennafield of LSU at a safety spot.
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: Bray Hubbard of Alabama the second team.
- 1:16:27Speaker 3: A little surprise, Bray Hubbard made this list and not
- 1:16:30Speaker 3: Zabian Brown from the Alabama defense.
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: Yeah Hubbard there. Special teams. The kicker Tate Sandell of Oklahoma.
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: Second teamer Special teams Tate Sandell of Oklahoma. The placekicker
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: Lucas Canaro of Ole miss Is the second teamer. The
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: punter Evan Crenshaw Troy, the second teamer, Palmer Williams of Baylor.
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: The returner Ryan Niblett for Texas, and they talked about
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: how he delivered the seventy five yard pump return to
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: close out the win over then number six Oklahoma. He
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: topped that by scoring on a seventy nine yard pump
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: return to San Texas to overtime and the eventual comeback
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: went over Mississippi State.
- 1:17:12Speaker 4: He had four more pump returns of forty.
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: Plus yards on the year and if we have big
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: ones against Kentucky and he finished number two in FBS
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: seven hundred and thirty eight total return yards. The second
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: pump returner is Vaccari Swain of South Carolina. So that
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: is ESPN's pre season All American Team one O the
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: SEC note And this was a piece that was in
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: the Athletic and that came out yesterday.
- 1:17:40Speaker 2: I wanted to get to it yesterday and did get
- 1:17:41Speaker 2: a chance to.
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: But Seth Emerson wrote this how it's his own column.
- 1:17:48Speaker 4: And he's writing. He said, the headline is a humbold.
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: SEC should do Netflix again and embrace its status as
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: the most interesting conference. He said, no Netflix cameras were
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: rolling behind the scenes last year at SEC football programs,
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: which is a shame because the world missed out on
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: what would have been a riveting second season of any
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: given Saturday, the SEC focused documentary that came out this
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: time a year ago. He said, imagine if the cameras
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: were rolling at oh Miss chronicling well all that.
- 1:18:23Speaker 2: Well with Lane Kiffin's departure.
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: Imagine if they were filming at LSU for the fall
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: of Brian Kelly, the firing of its athletic director, the
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: intervention of the governor, and the recruitment of Lane Kiffin.
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: Imagine if the crews were at Auburn, Florida and Arkansas
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: three more programs with in season coaching changes, or if
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: they were in Texas chronicling the ups and downs of
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: Arch Manning's much hype debut season, or at Vanderbilt with
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: Diego Pavia, the quarterback who was opposite of camera shy.
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: Maybe the SEC isn't the dominant conference in college football anymore,
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: but it is still the most interesting and they should
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: embrace it. While any hiven Saturday isn't returning this year,
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: the conference should lobby for a second season on Netflix,
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: and along with it, pushed for all of its programs,
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: especially the six that declined last time, to participate. That
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: This is an opinion that is shared by none other
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: than the Commissioner, Greg Sanki. He said, I think the
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: first year was outstanding. I think we had ten of sixteen,
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: but we need everybody to participate. We've had great conversations
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: with Netflix about other projects similar to that in other sports,
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: but in football in particular, the participation rate needs to increase.
- 1:19:34Speaker 4: The six schools that declined to.
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: Let Netflix film them during the twenty twenty four season,
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: it's a roll call of contenders other than maybe one Alabama, Georgia, Missouri, Oklahoma, Ole,
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: miss and Texas. Those are some of the conference's biggest
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: brands in the first season, which aired last year, suffered
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: because of it. According to Emerson, he says, considering that
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: the show did relatively well and he given Saturday he
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: was in the top ten percent of Netflix shows in
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: twenty twenty five as judged by its engagements report. So
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: he goes on and talks about it. Sankey quote, we
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: are interesting, We're not dull. The ability to showcase the stories,
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: the people, the atmosphere of the sport obviously in the
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: United States, but with the Netflix reach globally, that's valuable
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: for our universities, not just the football teams.
- 1:20:29Speaker 3: The conference will behave and work like a reality show.
- 1:20:34Speaker 3: Sometimes you might as well make a great documentary about it.
- 1:20:38Speaker 2: Lean into it.
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: Yep, all right, up next we'll hear some more from
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: Raheem Biles and we'll tell you about his name and
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: the spelling and why it's pronounced the way it is.
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: When we continue, I'm thirteen hunder the zone in the
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: iHeartRadio app.
- 1:20:54Speaker 2: There's another one of the.
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: Immortals, Jim Crouching, Great Jim Crouch. Was there an anniversary
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: of some today.
- 1:21:01Speaker 3: No, it just it just tied in with our tied
- 1:21:04Speaker 3: in with our Raheem Biles stuff coming up at this hour.
- 1:21:08Speaker 2: It's a good point.
- 1:21:08Speaker 4: And I'm also.
- 1:21:09Speaker 3: Wondering this coming out in nineteen seventy four, right.
- 1:21:13Speaker 6: Is it tie in a little bit?
- 1:21:15Speaker 4: Does it branch off the yacht rock river at all?
- 1:21:19Speaker 2: I've heard it less.
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: In yacht rock and more on, you know, some other
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: soft rock and roll things, because but some of Kurchy's
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: catalog could fall into that category.
- 1:21:33Speaker 4: I would think including this, I would.
- 1:21:34Speaker 2: Think it could.
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: I got a name, Raheem Biles has a name as well.
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: It's spelled like Rashim.
- 1:21:41Speaker 2: It's r A s h e e M.
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: But from the moment he arrived on campus, he was
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: letting everybody know it's pronounced Raheem, not Rashim, r A
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: s c em. So when the first visit he had
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: with the media this morning, naturally, the darravation of his
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: name and origination of his name came about.
- 1:22:07Speaker 6: We're taking it out. We're gonna remove it. But is
- 1:22:10Speaker 6: it spelled with an? It is, but it's not supposed
- 1:22:13Speaker 6: to be like.
- 1:22:17Speaker 10: I've been writing about you to mess me up, or
- 1:22:26Speaker 10: like he in the dream, like Little League, He the dream.
- 1:22:35Speaker 2: Under that one, all right.
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: So even though it's spelled like rashim r A s
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: h e e M, it's raheem. He sort of just
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: heme for sure, he the dream, uh, that sort of thing.
- 1:22:46Speaker 2: But it was funny.
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: Cedric Golden, ever a stickler for accuracy, our good friend said,
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: asked him, Hey, is it spelled though, Yeah, but it's
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: not supposed to be. It's not some of his mom
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: spelled that he was not supposed to be. But that's
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: how it's spelled. Has pronounced raheem. So yes is silent.
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: Just so you'll know, he is not a silent football
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: player by any uh stretch of the imagination.
- 1:23:14Speaker 2: He's quite the weapon there on the field for Texas.
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: And he had talked we heard a little bit about
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: it last hour, about taking a couple of other portal visits.
- 1:23:26Speaker 2: He went to Michigan in a portal visit. He was.
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: He went to a couple others and was due to go,
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: I think to Miami on the same day as Texas,
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: then decided just to go to Texas. Uh and and
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: our friend Kirk Bowles from the Houston Chronicle, formerly long
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: time of the Austin American Statesman, asked him, Uh, you
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: know what, what was the recruiting pitch all about Texas
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: to Raheem Biles.
- 1:23:52Speaker 6: He just told me, like every like they asked me,
- 1:23:54Speaker 6: what were like, what's my dreams? Like, what's my goals
- 1:23:57Speaker 6: for this year?
- 1:23:58Speaker 5: And then me and my mom said down everything in line,
- 1:24:01Speaker 5: So it's really no, there's really no question. After everything
- 1:24:03Speaker 5: aligned with my my goals, my dreams, their goals, and
- 1:24:06Speaker 5: their dreams for this year. It was just perfect match
- 1:24:09Speaker 5: to be individual individual goals, team goes, but really the
- 1:24:13Speaker 5: team goes first, and then individual goals they they aligned too,
- 1:24:17Speaker 5: so it was.
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: Like for me, perfect okay. So then the follow up, obviously,
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: what are his individual goals?
- 1:24:24Speaker 5: I feel like they're gonna come like nah when we win.
- 1:24:27Speaker 5: So but it really ain't about that right now. It's
- 1:24:29Speaker 5: really about just winning. Individual individual goals gonna.
- 1:24:32Speaker 2: Come, okay, all right, does he have any favorite players
- 1:24:35Speaker 2: he likes to watch.
- 1:24:36Speaker 6: My favorite players.
- 1:24:37Speaker 5: My favorite players they're my favorite player in the NFL
- 1:24:39Speaker 5: is Durreing James and then Nick from the Seattle Seahawks.
- 1:24:44Speaker 6: Number three.
- 1:24:45Speaker 5: He's been he's been teaching me, Like, like I watched
- 1:24:48Speaker 5: his game last year he was a rookie, he was
- 1:24:50Speaker 5: like he was at South Carolina he was, he was
- 1:24:53Speaker 5: a gamer last year. And I like Fred Warner and
- 1:24:57Speaker 5: Frankie Luvu from the Commanders. I feel like he's a
- 1:24:59Speaker 5: great line back.
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: To look at him just rattling off these NFL guys
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: role models that he wants to be a you.
- 1:25:05Speaker 2: Know, yeah, Nick, what's the factor?
- 1:25:07Speaker 4: And Dicky mean Worr the guy he's thinking of there?
- 1:25:10Speaker 2: Yes, absolutely, that's why he just said. Nick.
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: Yeah, he's from Columbus, Ohio, but started off at pitt
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: before transferring in. So how would he describe his relationship
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: if he has one with Ohio State?
- 1:25:25Speaker 5: I mean, I'm going to relationship with him. I mean
- 1:25:27Speaker 5: they they call him stuff, but I'm not. I didn't
- 1:25:31Speaker 5: want to stay in Columbus frill for if I'm being honest.
- 1:25:33Speaker 5: That was like when I made my list, Like you know,
- 1:25:36Speaker 5: obviously we got Asian stuff, and I made my list
- 1:25:38Speaker 5: and stuff I told my mom and stuff like Columbus.
- 1:25:40Speaker 5: I ain't really trying to be in Columbus. Iron't trying
- 1:25:42Speaker 5: to be a bluck eye, Like they ain't want me
- 1:25:44Speaker 5: out of high school.
- 1:25:45Speaker 6: And I was right there.
- 1:25:45Speaker 5: There ain't no point in time to give me now
- 1:25:47Speaker 5: when now you feel me. But I'm excited for that game, definitely,
- 1:25:50Speaker 5: that's going I stuck with him.
- 1:25:51Speaker 2: My calendar, Okay, all right, He's looking forward to that.
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: And even though he wanted to get out of Columbus
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: for his collegiate career, he does have a charitable found day,
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: the Dream Foundation, that he works with in Columbus.
- 1:26:03Speaker 5: Oh yeah, The Dream Foundation is like a foundation for
- 1:26:07Speaker 5: just like kids and with adolescents, like just help me
- 1:26:10Speaker 5: like mental behavior, because obviously growing up, I'm not I
- 1:26:13Speaker 5: was like a I was a trouble kid. I was
- 1:26:14Speaker 5: kind of a bad kid, but like always had people
- 1:26:17Speaker 5: around me who just like kind of helped me and
- 1:26:20Speaker 5: just got me to where I am now. So really
- 1:26:22Speaker 5: it's just like I got a foundation back in Columbus
- 1:26:25Speaker 5: where like the we got kids, we've taken I got
- 1:26:28Speaker 5: a I started my own AAU basketball team for.
- 1:26:30Speaker 6: The kids and my mom and my mom we got
- 1:26:33Speaker 6: like a building.
- 1:26:34Speaker 5: She has a thing called Reset Rec where she works
- 1:26:36Speaker 5: with like mental health for like adults and stuff.
- 1:26:38Speaker 6: And then eventually we started working with the younger kids.
- 1:26:41Speaker 5: We have a whole rec center, basketball court, turf, We
- 1:26:45Speaker 5: got classrooms in there, they got different classrooms.
- 1:26:47Speaker 6: We got after school programs.
- 1:26:48Speaker 5: For them, so like during the week, like during the summertime,
- 1:26:51Speaker 5: during the weekdays, after after school program and after a
- 1:26:54Speaker 5: lot of kids played on my AAU team, so they
- 1:26:56Speaker 5: have like something to do so they wouldn't be getting
- 1:26:58Speaker 5: in trouble, and like it was just it was very
- 1:27:00Speaker 5: outlet for the kids, Like anything I could do to
- 1:27:02Speaker 5: help in the city because I knew like growing up
- 1:27:04Speaker 5: it was hard, like it's your Columbus, Like it's not
- 1:27:06Speaker 5: a lot of people that really make it out. But
- 1:27:08Speaker 5: like if you just keep your head on straight and
- 1:27:11Speaker 5: like just keep grinding and like have something to do,
- 1:27:13Speaker 5: have an outlet, it's like you can you can really
- 1:27:15Speaker 5: do a lot.
- 1:27:16Speaker 6: So whatever I can do to.
- 1:27:17Speaker 5: Help them kids, like with the AU stuff, I just
- 1:27:20Speaker 5: went back.
- 1:27:21Speaker 6: To August first, right before Kim started.
- 1:27:23Speaker 5: I had to back to school drive help them with
- 1:27:25Speaker 5: school supplies and stuff like whatever kids needed, like if
- 1:27:28Speaker 5: we had riffle tickets, we had bounce houses, snowcombe machines,
- 1:27:32Speaker 5: we have like competitions for gift cards and stuff. Obviously
- 1:27:35Speaker 5: gave away book bags and school supplies. So yeah, me
- 1:27:38Speaker 5: and my mom trying to help them kids in any
- 1:27:39Speaker 5: way we can, Like the Dreams Foundation, like I just
- 1:27:41Speaker 5: been pushing that like a lot, a lot, Like I'm
- 1:27:43Speaker 5: just trying to give back, give back, like because obviously
- 1:27:46Speaker 5: we're getting in n im and stuff this day. So
- 1:27:48Speaker 5: whatever I can do to help them kids. Man, I'm
- 1:27:50Speaker 5: just trying to help real real I know how it
- 1:27:51Speaker 5: is growing up in Columbus.
- 1:27:53Speaker 2: Yeah, just like you're right there, right there, what he
- 1:27:55Speaker 2: just said, you can tell how personal this is for him.
- 1:27:57Speaker 5: Yeah, it is very personal because, like I said, like
- 1:27:59Speaker 5: I was once one of them kids, like I ain't.
- 1:28:01Speaker 6: My papa's passed away before I was born and stuff.
- 1:28:04Speaker 6: So my mom was really like she I was. She
- 1:28:07Speaker 6: was a single parent her whole life.
- 1:28:08Speaker 5: So me and my siblings we used to just do
- 1:28:10Speaker 5: stuff like like just go outside and just have a
- 1:28:13Speaker 5: lot of fun, like just play be outside all day.
- 1:28:15Speaker 5: We used to get in trouble, like We used to
- 1:28:16Speaker 5: be a kid like in school, being in trouble and stuff,
- 1:28:19Speaker 5: so I know how it is like when you got
- 1:28:21Speaker 5: like eighty eighth d and stuff like stuff like that,
- 1:28:23Speaker 5: your brain is just like he.
- 1:28:24Speaker 6: Was, want to do this and do that.
- 1:28:25Speaker 5: So I just try to get them kids an outlet,
- 1:28:27Speaker 5: like like I said, like after school they go to school,
- 1:28:30Speaker 5: we got pickups for them. They get they come to
- 1:28:32Speaker 5: the after school program, Like we got a whole like
- 1:28:35Speaker 5: really a rec center for them, like we me and
- 1:28:37Speaker 5: my mom then built up basketball courts inside of them
- 1:28:39Speaker 5: turf on the other side, Like I said, they got
- 1:28:41Speaker 5: computers in their game systems. Like they get fed like
- 1:28:45Speaker 5: after they come home, me after they come from school.
- 1:28:49Speaker 5: So we got like a whole system. We gotta we
- 1:28:51Speaker 5: drop them off after. So it's really been big. So
- 1:28:53Speaker 5: like shout out a Reset rec Center and the Reset
- 1:28:56Speaker 5: family and just a dream foundation for sure.
- 1:28:59Speaker 2: He was also about a relationship, apparently as with the
- 1:29:03Speaker 2: former long Horn basketball player who's now in the NBA,
- 1:29:06Speaker 2: Daylan Swayne Dylan Slaye.
- 1:29:07Speaker 6: Yeah, I played in the high school sause you know
- 1:29:09Speaker 6: I was. I used to play basketball too. I won
- 1:29:11Speaker 6: the state.
- 1:29:11Speaker 5: Championship my junior year so me and Daylan Swain. Yeah,
- 1:29:14Speaker 5: I knew him. We uh we talked a couple of
- 1:29:16Speaker 5: times when we was down here Texas and stuff.
- 1:29:18Speaker 6: But yeah, he was he was nice. We had a
- 1:29:20Speaker 6: we had a big game.
- 1:29:21Speaker 5: We played them like his school, like he was like
- 1:29:24Speaker 5: big because obviously he was a b one player. We
- 1:29:26Speaker 5: had another guy, Devin Roy, he was a number one
- 1:29:28Speaker 5: player and Ohio, we had Sunny Styles and our basketball
- 1:29:31Speaker 5: team too, so that games was sold out.
- 1:29:33Speaker 6: We had the whole gym packed. So that was a
- 1:29:35Speaker 6: big game for sure.
- 1:29:36Speaker 4: All Right, some kind of big three figure it out. Yeah.
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: Absolutely, we'll hear more. We've got a little more. We'll
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: hear from Rahem Biles. He's he's fun to visit with.
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: We'll hear us some more from him coming up tomorrow. Hey,
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: I thought it was gonna be an easy trivia question,
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: and apparently, uh, the only person who answered it is
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: ineligible for the prize, John, because you've already won, That's
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: what I was told. You've already won a copy of
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: the magazine, so not eligible.
- 1:30:07Speaker 2: But it was a simple question. When Texas lost in
- 1:30:11Speaker 2: the college football playoffs Semiphiles to Washington, what ballgame was
- 1:30:15Speaker 2: it in all you have to do is be the
- 1:30:17Speaker 2: first one who hasn't already won with the correct answer,
- 1:30:23Speaker 2: and you'll win a copy of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine.
- 1:30:27Speaker 2: Doing it on the iHeartRadio app.
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: All right, I'm going to hear a little more as
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: well from the offensive side, from Connor robertson the Long
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: Worn Center when we continue on thirteen.
- 1:30:38Speaker 2: Under the zone.
- 1:30:43Speaker 6: The city.
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: I'll be gone, immortal Warlow Guthrie, City of New Orleans
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: and his youth full exuberance showing here. Jake wasn't quite
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: sure about who Arlo Guthrie was, Is that correct?
- 1:31:06Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm just familiar with the Willie Nelson.
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: Okay version, which is a fabulous version of this song,
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: by the way, But I would directly do it after
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: off we're off the air, or when you're at Homer,
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: some pull up Alice's restaurant.
- 1:31:20Speaker 2: Okay, Arlo Guthrie. Listen out all nineteen minutes of it.
- 1:31:24Speaker 3: Nineteen minutes. That sounds like my commute home. So that's
- 1:31:28Speaker 3: getting put right now. Yeah, you'll enjoy, You'll enjoy. It's
- 1:31:32Speaker 3: a story as much as anything.
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: But anyway, the reason why I did that is because
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: we finally got the right answer of our trivia question.
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: When the Longhorns lost to Washington in the College Football
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: Playoff following the twenty twenty three regular season, what bowl
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: game was it in.
- 1:31:51Speaker 7: Texas lost to Washington and the Sugar Bowl?
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: Darryl Moseley, Darryl congratulations, thirty seven thirty one filing at
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: Sugar Bowl. H feel bad for who is a greg
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: who said they lost to Washington. They did, but he
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: said Alamo Bowl. And they did lose to Washington in
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: the Alamo Bowl, but that was not the one in
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: the College Football Playoff. Okay, yep, because remember they lost
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: to Washington in the Alamo Bowl the year before and
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: then lost to Washington the next year in the Sugar
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: Bowl in the College Football Playoff, which helped Calin de
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: Boor become the head coach at Alabama.
- 1:32:28Speaker 2: Since they managed to get into that national championship.
- 1:32:32Speaker 3: Yeah, and then didn't think Pennis got banged up in
- 1:32:35Speaker 3: that championship game.
- 1:32:36Speaker 2: He did. He did.
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: So there it is, uh and we're gonna do a
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: one more magazine giveaway this hour before we get done.
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: Connor robertson the Longhorn Center getting ready at for the
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: SNIA and he said, you can get ready when you're
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: going up against gigantic defensive linemen like in Ja'fard, the
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: Arkansas transfer and Ion Williams.
- 1:33:02Speaker 9: I mean, they're they're big guys, man, you know, you
- 1:33:05Speaker 9: sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do. I
- 1:33:08Speaker 9: don't know, I don't really know how to put it,
- 1:33:09Speaker 9: but they're big guys and you know, good players. So
- 1:33:13Speaker 9: glad they're glad they're here.
- 1:33:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: Zion is listed at six four and three sixty The
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: red shirt freshman Jaffard is listed at sixty five and
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: three eighty seven. He dropped a few pounds, we've learned,
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: but he's still a big, big dude. You just heard
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: him say, you gotta do what you gotta do on
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: that day. How do you do what you gotta do
- 1:33:31Speaker 1: in that situation?
- 1:33:34Speaker 6: I think just I mean, you gotta gotta do the
- 1:33:38Speaker 6: best job you can do. I mean, they're they're bigger guys.
- 1:33:40Speaker 9: You know, I'm not a huge guy, so, you know,
- 1:33:42Speaker 9: trying to stay under them and get on top of
- 1:33:44Speaker 9: them quickly. It is kind of how I how I'm
- 1:33:46Speaker 9: trying to go about it, you know, But I think
- 1:33:47Speaker 9: it's it's a really good experience for me. I mean,
- 1:33:50Speaker 9: you know, I'm not going to see many guys you know,
- 1:33:53Speaker 9: bigger than that. So glad, I glad I get to
- 1:33:55Speaker 9: go against him every day, and you know.
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: And it's not like robertson his pike size. He's sixty
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: four and three twelve in his own right, but still
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: there's a really big guy. Has there been a moment
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: at this point in fall camp where he's felt like
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: things have clicked?
- 1:34:10Speaker 9: I think probably some of these team run periods as alignment.
- 1:34:13Speaker 9: I mean, you know, I'm sure other other positions are
- 1:34:16Speaker 9: just probably more focused on the seven and seven on
- 1:34:18Speaker 9: seven and stuff. But for me, it's like, you know,
- 1:34:21Speaker 9: if we have a really good team run period, that's
- 1:34:22Speaker 9: that's what I'm like.
- 1:34:23Speaker 6: You know, we're doing good job.
- 1:34:25Speaker 9: So just just trying to consistently do that and stacked days.
- 1:34:29Speaker 7: You know.
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: He talked about the things he has to do, making
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: the right calls and things like that, so much of
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: it landing on the shoulders of the center. So how
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: much of his game really is the pre stamp part
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: of it?
- 1:34:44Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean I think a lot of it.
- 1:34:48Speaker 9: You know, at the end of the day, the play happens,
- 1:34:51Speaker 9: you know, in between after snap So I think for me,
- 1:34:54Speaker 9: it's it's more just anticipating what will happen, you know,
- 1:34:58Speaker 9: pre snap, and I think studying defense and and getting
- 1:35:01Speaker 9: with getting with coach Baker. Coach must champion all of them,
- 1:35:05Speaker 9: you know, something me out with.
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: Another one of those really big young men is the
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: red shirt freshman nose Tackles or Sash Sharma. He's one
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: of the backups to Hero Canoe at that no spot.
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: How's he coming along?
- 1:35:17Speaker 9: He's done good. He's had a really good fall I
- 1:35:18Speaker 9: think so far, and really good offseason for him. He's
- 1:35:22Speaker 9: he's a hard worker and you know, shows up every
- 1:35:24Speaker 9: day with a good attitude.
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: So folks always like to talk about the relationship between
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: the center and the quarterback.
- 1:35:31Speaker 2: So how about his relationship with arch.
- 1:35:33Speaker 6: I mean, I'm my relationship with him is great. You know,
- 1:35:35Speaker 6: he's you know, i'd say he's my best friend.
- 1:35:37Speaker 9: And I think he's done a really good job this offseason,
- 1:35:41Speaker 9: you know, obviously during the spring kind of from a
- 1:35:44Speaker 9: different role for him. But I think he's done great
- 1:35:46Speaker 9: with it and you know, fired up, fired up for
- 1:35:49Speaker 9: him this year and glad he's glad he's here. Glad
- 1:35:52Speaker 9: I'm close with him.
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: Does kind of Robertson see what many have seen and
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: have experienced so far in UH, in dealings with and
- 1:35:59Speaker 1: conversations with arch Manning, that he seems much more comfortable
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: in the role.
- 1:36:03Speaker 6: Yeah, I think.
- 1:36:04Speaker 9: I mean, I don't know if relaxes the wout put it.
- 1:36:06Speaker 9: I mean, I think he's more excited, you know, so
- 1:36:10Speaker 9: I think we all are.
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: Yeah, he might be relaxed. What about you, Connor, Are
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: you more comfortable in your role?
- 1:36:15Speaker 6: Yeah? Man, I feel I mean, you know, I don't think.
- 1:36:17Speaker 6: I don't think you can.
- 1:36:18Speaker 9: Ever feel like comfortable with where you're at or complacent,
- 1:36:21Speaker 9: you know, but I feel I feel comfortable with with
- 1:36:24Speaker 9: our offense and with the guys in our room, and
- 1:36:26Speaker 9: I feel I feel like we really have bonded this
- 1:36:28Speaker 9: this offseason.
- 1:36:29Speaker 2: So that helps me a lot, you know.
- 1:36:31Speaker 9: And uh, as far as you know, from from a
- 1:36:34Speaker 9: playing point of view, I just you know, trying to
- 1:36:36Speaker 9: get better every single day.
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: Robertson has also asked about those defensive ends Colin Simmons,
- 1:36:43Speaker 1: Lance Jackson. We'll hear from Lance tomorrow, uh, and how
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: they're getting better and better against the run.
- 1:36:48Speaker 9: I think I think it's been really competitive, man, I
- 1:36:50Speaker 9: mean every single day, every single period.
- 1:36:53Speaker 6: You know, offense is good. Defense that is good. You know,
- 1:36:56Speaker 6: it changes every play. So I think I don't know.
- 1:36:58Speaker 9: If there's you know, one moment that I've seen, but
- 1:37:01Speaker 9: I think that thin. He's been a really competitive camp
- 1:37:03Speaker 9: and they've done a really good job you know, pass
- 1:37:05Speaker 9: and run.
- 1:37:06Speaker 2: So it's a good room. You know, conn Of Robertson's
- 1:37:08Speaker 2: local product out of West Lake.
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: This is a guy that enjoys being able to relax
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: a little bit of the offseason and that includes fishing.
- 1:37:15Speaker 6: That that was pretty fun.
- 1:37:16Speaker 9: I mean that was just a line, soas you know,
- 1:37:18Speaker 9: it wasn't the whole team, but man, I think it's
- 1:37:21Speaker 9: just been I think it's been really easy, really easy
- 1:37:24Speaker 9: for us to bond and get closer, and you know,
- 1:37:27Speaker 9: I feel like we've we've done a really good job
- 1:37:29Speaker 9: with that. But you know, from here on, it's just
- 1:37:30Speaker 9: it's just got to keep happening, you know, every single week,
- 1:37:32Speaker 9: every single day.
- 1:37:33Speaker 2: So it's been fun, all right.
- 1:37:35Speaker 1: One more from conn of Robertson asked about one more
- 1:37:39Speaker 1: big defensive lineman in the interior or Justice Terry, the
- 1:37:43Speaker 1: sophomore listed at sixty five and two ninety two quick
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: guy backs at Ballocks January.
- 1:37:47Speaker 2: There what makes Terry difficult to block?
- 1:37:50Speaker 9: Yeah, Jays, He's a really good player man, really big guy,
- 1:37:54Speaker 9: really strong obviously you know he can.
- 1:37:56Speaker 6: Tell just by looking at him.
- 1:37:58Speaker 9: So but he's only gotten better, you know, since he's
- 1:38:01Speaker 9: gotten here, and I think every.
- 1:38:03Speaker 6: Single day is getting better and better.
- 1:38:04Speaker 9: So I'm really excited, really fire it up to see
- 1:38:07Speaker 9: see what he can do this year and excited for
- 1:38:10Speaker 9: him to keep growing.
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: All Right, Tomorrow on the program, we'll hear a little
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: more from Raheem Biles. We'll also hear from Lance Jackson,
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: offensive end and Brandon Baker, the guy moving inside from
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: tackle to guard. Before we get to the break, we
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: have one more copy of Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: to give away, and it's going to be lucky. Entrint
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: number five, number five, be the fifth person. What you
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: need to do as we repeat it, download the iHeartRadio app.

- 1:38:49Speaker 1: it does, you'll see that red button with white microphone.
- 1:38:52Speaker 1: You tap that button and say I want the magazine.
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: That activates our talk back Mike. Can you just say
