Transcript
- 0:02Welcome back to Mommy Wood, the podcast where we dive into the
- 0:07wild, beautiful and sometimes completely crazy world of being
- 0:12both a mom and a performer. I am your host Emily, and if
- 0:16you've ever found yourself running on coffee, passion, and
- 0:20the sheer willpower of a sleep deprived parent then you are in
- 0:24the right place. On this week's episode of Mommy
- 0:27Would. I'm so excited to have the
- 0:30opportunity to sit down and chat with a Rachel Rosenbloom.
- 0:35She is an actor, a voice over artist, coach, and a new mom to
- 0:41a six month old baby girl. You may know Rachel as the
- 0:45series regular on Good Trouble. You will probably also be seeing
- 0:50her soon. She's also in a little show,
- 0:54maybe you've heard of it, called Nobody Wants This on Netflix
- 0:58with Kristen Bell and Adam Brody, unless you're living
- 1:02under a rock. You also might see her on
- 1:06Apple's Platonic playing the role of Jenna alongside Seth
- 1:12Rogen and Rose Byrne. So Needless to say, Rachel is
- 1:17killing it. So it was so great to sit down
- 1:22and talk to her about how she is doing all this and being now a
- 1:29brand new mom. So talking about the
- 1:31juxtaposition of all of that and that whirlwind, we talk about
- 1:38what it's like to step into motherhood while keeping a
- 1:42thriving creative career going. We talk about the honest
- 1:47adjustments that really nobody told you about and the moments
- 1:50of joy that really make it all worth it.
- 1:55They really do somehow. So I know you were going to
- 2:00enjoy this episode of Mommy Wood with the Rachel Rosenblum.
- 2:05Rachel, thank you so much for being here.
- 2:09Having me. You are running on very little
- 2:12sleep. Yeah, baby.
- 2:16Yeah, though I'm not crazy about the word regression.
- 2:20That's where we are. Yeah, I've got she's in a growth
- 2:23spurt. She's a growth spurt.
- 2:24There you go. She probably learned a new
- 2:26talent. Definitely.
- 2:27And that talent is being awake. I've learned that I can do all
- 2:34this. So you're originally from
- 2:36Boston? I'm actually from Wisconsin, I
- 2:38went to school in Boston. Wisconsin.
- 2:39Yeah, yeah. Which was Curly.
- 2:41Yeah, I heard that. First Oh yeah, and I was just
- 2:44home seeing my mom, so it's it gets bad.
- 2:47Yeah. Yeah, but I did go to school in
- 2:49Boston. School in Boston.
- 2:50Gotcha. So what?
- 2:52When did you move out to LA? I, I went to Emerson, I went, I
- 3:00actually have AI graduated with a theatre education degree and
- 3:04so I stayed after I graduated to student Teach First semester.
- 3:09And even though a lot of Emersonians come to LA, there's
- 3:12like an LA program at La campus here and stuff.
- 3:15I did not do that because I wanted to teach and and then I
- 3:21kind of followed a, a boyfriend I had at the time up to Vermont
- 3:24for a year. It was like I just needed to get
- 3:27out of Boston. It was very like burned out post
- 3:29school. Yeah, it's beautiful lioness.
- 3:32Montpelier it was most like beautiful summer of my life.
- 3:39But I, But while I was there, I think it was life kind of
- 3:42flashed before my eyes like, do I want to be, do I want to be
- 3:45teaching 3rd grade right now and name my children Rosemary and
- 3:49Sage And you know, like, like at 23 or 22 or whatever.
- 3:53And I was like, I got to get out of here.
- 3:56And it was far more dramatic than that.
- 3:59And so I, I had visited my friends who had done the LA
- 4:04program out here. And so I came in and moved.
- 4:06Yeah. I was just like, I don't, I
- 4:08don't know what it was in me. That was just like, I miss
- 4:10acting. I think when I was in school, I.
- 4:12Wasn't teaching to more performing and auditioning then?
- 4:17Yeah. In school I was like, I was in
- 4:21AI, liked Emerson 'cause it like you, you had to audition to be
- 4:24in the program no matter what. Even if you were ABA, it wasn't
- 4:27just like a BFA. And then like Peter Studies,
- 4:29like I had to audition and I would be taking classes with
- 4:33other acting majors. But then at your two after your
- 4:37sophomore year, they they split. And so the BF as go re audition
- 4:42and they do the Conservatory. And then there's this like the
- 4:45people who were the acting majors have to pick a second
- 4:47emphasis. And I went full force into
- 4:49theater education. Yeah, not thinking of it as a
- 4:52backup, but just thinking of it as this, this piece of advice
- 4:54that I hate that they go. If you could see yourself doing
- 4:56anything else, you should do that.
- 4:58Me too advice. Me too, but I was like, well
- 5:01can't we all? Yeah, we have.
- 5:03Imaginations. Isn't that the whole?
- 5:05And that's why I, when I auditioned for the school, I,
- 5:10Ken Cheesman, professor and wonderful actor, had said, I
- 5:14remember he said to me, he was like, why didn't you do the BFA
- 5:16program? I'm just curious, you know, why
- 5:17didn't you audition with the BFA?
- 5:18And I was like, well, because I can see myself doing a lot of
- 5:20things. I like a lot of things.
- 5:22And so I did the year education. Yeah.
- 5:27But yeah, when I some somewhere in Vermont, I I think I was just
- 5:34burned out. I was burned out from teaching.
- 5:36I was burned out from, I was substitute teaching like full
- 5:39time. They were just, I was like long
- 5:43term sub in like a third grade in Montpelier, Vt.
- 5:46I was really like kind. Of.
- 5:49Stuck in this like, is this what my life is?
- 5:51And it just didn't feel right. And the last thing I remembered
- 5:55I like, it's not this is not a long time ago.
- 5:58So I was like, what did I feel was I had done some student
- 6:04films and I love doing that. It felt it felt like summer
- 6:07camp. It felt like we were all making
- 6:10this story together and like. You.
- 6:12Know and everybody and everybody had their little part to play
- 6:15like we were all these little gears in this little machine.
- 6:17And even though I didn't see myself as like AI was, I didn't
- 6:21really see myself as like a, an actor in the, in the sense that
- 6:24like my BFA counterparts, I always was like, oh, they're
- 6:27actors. I I just like it.
- 6:28It was like it was like they're the leads.
- 6:30I just, I just like it, you know, I'm just having fun.
- 6:34Yeah. I was like, I was never the lead
- 6:35of the player. I just was like I was just in
- 6:36it. So which I didn't at the time
- 6:40consider maybe as big as it was, you know, I would tell my I
- 6:42would maybe down tell my younger self, like, kid, you got in.
- 6:46That's a big deal. Yeah, doesn't matter.
- 6:48You didn't get the lead. I was like, I was never the
- 6:49lead. I was just.
- 6:50But I've always managed to get in there.
- 6:51Yeah. So and I think that served me
- 6:53really well moving out here because it was like, I know some
- 6:56people who had those, like they were always the lead of their
- 6:58play. Yeah, they come out and they're
- 7:00like, I'm the lead. And I was like, oh, I didn't.
- 7:02Oh, my self esteem was. Yeah.
- 7:05And then you're like, Oh well, I'm, I'm prepared.
- 7:08Now, Yeah, yeah, when they were like, it's not personal and I
- 7:10was like, don't worry, it could be I to where I'm beating myself
- 7:13already. It's not bringing.
- 7:14It to me it's it's totally fine. I'm totally fine.
- 7:17So did you meet your husband when you came out here?
- 7:19I. Did.
- 7:19Yeah. He's also Emerson, but we didn't
- 7:22know each other there. Oh my gosh, in the world.
- 7:24Yeah, yeah. There's such change.
- 7:25It was like through mutual friends.
- 7:27Yeah, we always see we got in like right before the online
- 7:29dating. How about you guys?
- 7:30Oh yeah, we we also random. It was very random, a mutual
- 7:35friend, but like so distant for both of us, like it was
- 7:40definitely meant to be the way we met because it it's very
- 7:44strange how we met or not strange how we met, but the fact
- 7:47that we met through this person. But but yeah, we've been
- 7:52together. I met him like a couple months
- 7:55after I moved out here 2012. Yeah, OK.
- 7:59Yeah, we're about to say. Yeah, Oh my gosh.
- 8:01We got a very similar, Yeah. It was back when, like, people
- 8:03were online dating, but it was just like OkCupid.
- 8:05And it was sort of like, is this OK?
- 8:07We don't know. Yeah.
- 8:11Yeah. Now we're like commit online.
- 8:13I'm like, yeah, of course that's now it's normal.
- 8:15But at the time it was like the only ones were like eHarmony.
- 8:17Yeah, if you're like meet in person, who how where are you
- 8:22meeting? So did you guys like know that
- 8:27you wanted kids or was it like a a surprise?
- 8:30Oh, we should also mention you. You have one, lovely.
- 8:33Daughter. I have a daughter.
- 8:34She is five months old. Reya Reya.
- 8:37Reya. I say like, like via Pearlman,
- 8:41though not named after her. Will she be short?
- 8:45Probably. Of curly hair and Jewish and
- 8:47funny? Yeah.
- 8:47The answer is yes. Perfect, one would assume, as
- 8:52both my husband and I are who are funny.
- 8:59And well, we we think so, though she doesn't.
- 9:02We really. She hasn't laughed a lot yet.
- 9:04And we think, is this us? Is this the universe actually
- 9:06telling us that we're not funny? No, it's not like that.
- 9:09No, it's like. Turns out, as it turns out,
- 9:12we're not that funny. I feel like we it's like a.
- 9:14While to get some laughs. And then my daughter.
- 9:18Moser laughs at herself more than anything.
- 9:21But yeah, she's got her first little joke where she kind of
- 9:23like looks side eye and is like, I can eat your nose and it's a
- 9:26little like I've got a funny thing.
- 9:28It's very cute. But yes, did you guys know that
- 9:33you? Wanted kids or like, are were
- 9:35you one of those people who like dreamed of my family or were you
- 9:39like? Here's the thing.
- 9:40When I was young, yes, like I was like when people would ask,
- 9:43I was like, what do you want, kids?
- 9:44I was like, Oh, yes, I'm a, I'm the second of four kids.
- 9:48We're very spread out. So it was sort of like I raised
- 9:50my, my little sister. She's 11 years younger.
- 9:56I always feel like my older sister kind of raised a bit me
- 9:58and my brother. And then I really raised Lily,
- 10:00my little sister, and. That worked out the nature of
- 10:04the. Time and Alice said she just
- 10:05wanted one in diapers at a time and it worked out.
- 10:10And I always babysat and I'm such a kid person and I have an
- 10:12education degree. It's like I kids were always in
- 10:14like well, and kids seem to make sense to me.
- 10:18And I was a nanny full time when I moved out here.
- 10:20And I've been so many people's first babysitter that in my
- 10:24brain, I think there was always this like we advocate, we
- 10:26advocate. And, and I know Rob and I had my
- 10:31husband, Rob and I had, we, we talked about it, But for a long
- 10:36time, for many years, I feel like we've there was sort of
- 10:39this like daily, I don't know. And like, do we want to upend
- 10:44our lives? It was just like, do we want to
- 10:46upend our lives? And it was like, I don't know,
- 10:48actually. And my husband after the
- 10:52pandemic, got this opportunity to work in Amsterdam.
- 10:54So he was there for two years and went back and forth.
- 10:57I was here working on good trouble.
- 11:00And so there was also in the world, why didn't your parents?
- 11:02And so people were like, why didn't you move?
- 11:03And I was like, well, because I had this gig.
- 11:05It was you're not as of course, you know, like and my community
- 11:08and like my, my our friends and our friends are.
- 11:11I feel like out here, your friends are everything great
- 11:14because your friends are your family.
- 11:15We don't have family out here. And kids did feel more distant.
- 11:21There were several years where we were kind of really on the
- 11:24fence about it, I think especially with, you know,
- 11:28climate change, like, you know what I mean?
- 11:30Like I was like, yeah, the I was like the politics with the
- 11:34world. The I was like, this is
- 11:37ethically I kept, I kept kind of going to this.
- 11:39Like, it's not ethical. Yeah, but like I was going
- 11:43through this like moral dilemma. Not to mention the money which
- 11:47the whole other. Thing.
- 11:48My, my new thing is like, listen, if you are so privileged
- 11:52that you have either family money or you got family or
- 11:55you're from here, you got family in town because people get a
- 11:58little embarrassed if they have it.
- 11:59I'm like, enjoy it, Enjoy that privilege, my love, like all
- 12:03more power to you. I like, I, I want that for all
- 12:07of us. We still have it despite our
- 12:11many privileges that we've been allotted and and that kind of
- 12:13thing. We have plenty of privileges.
- 12:17Family money is not. It's like, so I think there was
- 12:20a lot of logistics too, just like when are we going to, when
- 12:25are we going to do this? And our, our fear kind of got,
- 12:29it's almost better of me for a long time and we're both really
- 12:32nervous about it. And so it was very long winded.
- 12:34But ultimately, I think while Rob was working in Europe and we
- 12:40were going back and forth. It's like it really gave me a
- 12:42lot of time alone in a way that I've never had.
- 12:46And it's wild that that time alone and kind of exploring like
- 12:55needs versus wants, right? I very much was raised in a
- 12:58family that's like, you don't and it's I feel like it's so
- 13:00Midwest. You don't say what you need ever
- 13:04unless it's unless you're like you're dying, right?
- 13:07You know, you don't ask for a glass of water unless you're
- 13:08dying of thirst. The idea would be like, Hey,
- 13:10would you like something to drink?
- 13:11Like in the Midwest be like, Oh, no, I'm good.
- 13:12Oh, no, I'm good. No, no, I'm good.
- 13:14It's like, you could literally be so thirsty and you wouldn't
- 13:17say that unless you're like, you know, I just came in from mowing
- 13:20the lawn and I'm dying from thirst.
- 13:22And then you would ask and like I especially doing long distance
- 13:27and we had to work on our communications so much and, and
- 13:30we would reunite and it would be everyone's like, Oh my God,
- 13:33isn't so amazing. You get to go see Rob and then
- 13:35you just have the best time. And it's like there's a weird
- 13:37transition where we have to reunite and then a weird
- 13:39transition where we have to protect ourselves and go be solo
- 13:42again and do that over and over and over and over and over.
- 13:45And I. Were you already married by the
- 13:48time he OK? Yeah.
- 13:49Yeah, yeah, we'd and we'd been together for, I don't know, a
- 13:53dozen years. Yeah.
- 13:55No. Or 10:10 because now it's a
- 13:57dozen. Now it's about a dozen.
- 13:58Yeah. It was like 8 years.
- 14:00I think 8 years around was around 8 years.
- 14:02Yeah. You know, I'm always like, yeah,
- 14:05I've been doing this for 15 years.
- 14:06I was like, no, you have. September will be my 15 in LA.
- 14:11That's crazy, right? Yeah.
- 14:14Maybe. No, if it's 14 or somewhere
- 14:18around there. Yeah.
- 14:19Yeah. So somewhere between we'll get a
- 14:23fact checker. Yeah.
- 14:24Yeah. Oh, Lord.
- 14:28But yeah, I really do think it was during that time that was
- 14:31sort of like, I can have. It was just like, I can have
- 14:33things that I want. And I really want a kid and I
- 14:37really want a kid with you. And.
- 14:41And then once he got back, he was unemployed for a long time
- 14:46because he couldn't. The job that took him there
- 14:48couldn't transfer back is a whole mess.
- 14:53Yeah. No, you're good.
- 14:54Actually, I'm gonna pause there 'cause I have a fear that we've
- 14:57stopped. Recording.
- 15:00You didn't. OK, gorgeous, let me put this
- 15:02on. No, you're good.
- 15:04We got babies. We.
- 15:05Need to he can get through. The desk to start with, he's too
- 15:08good. So you're like, I want a baby
- 15:14and I want one with you. My.
- 15:15Baby want to be with you. And he came back and he was
- 15:17unemployed and. And 'cause it was, he had come
- 15:19back and it was. He's also an entertainment, but
- 15:21not a performer. And he's more studio sag, Yeah.
- 15:27Right, 'cause he has like a full time and it's.
- 15:30New yeah. And so without that, he was sort
- 15:32of, I think there was this like also this chatter of like, well,
- 15:35we don't want to start trying till, till I get a job till but
- 15:38but that also helped me go wait a minute.
- 15:44We're under SAG health insurance right now.
- 15:47And I am one of these gifted people that is that currently
- 15:50qualified. I was like, talk about privilege
- 15:52that it was this like, and I remember getting like paid for a
- 15:57voice over gig that then pushed us so that we would have health
- 16:00insurance through the end of like 2025.
- 16:03And this was, you know, before I got pregnant.
- 16:06So 20, I don't know. It was around 20, the beginning
- 16:08of 2024. And and I kind of was like, hey,
- 16:14I know we want to wait. Yeah, I was like, I know we want
- 16:16to wait for you. And, and, and, and people always
- 16:20treat acting in, in the entertainment as like, so like
- 16:24as so fickle and so unreliable. But I was like, but I actually
- 16:27have this talk about it was like, yeah, this privilege.
- 16:29It was like, I have this beautiful nugget of health
- 16:31insurance that will get us through to the end of 2025
- 16:33guaranteed. Let's see if we can do this.
- 16:36And if we encounter troubles again, we also got extremely
- 16:40lucky getting pregnant. I like, you know, pretty pretty.
- 16:44Quickly like. And it worked.
- 16:46And it's sticking, too. I was very.
- 16:49Yeah. I mean, I was cracking jokes for
- 16:51the first several months about, you know, like, I was like, my
- 16:53body, my choice. You know, we don't have to keep
- 16:55this, you know, like, I would kind of turn it over and I'd be
- 16:56like, just so, you know, still early.
- 16:58We could, we could jump ship. You know, some people did not
- 17:01think that was funny. Yeah, sure.
- 17:05But I had a good time. And.
- 17:08And I think it was my way of protecting myself, too.
- 17:10You know it was. Like, I mean, that's, that's
- 17:12fear we got to do. What we got to do to protect our
- 17:15minds? In the situation because you
- 17:19know what is it one of three or yeah aren't crazy or it's like,
- 17:23oh, I was pregnancy. Loss so I just it's only my
- 17:25friends had so I was just very like I'm just going to kind of
- 17:27keep my arms length. I'm also superstitious.
- 17:30I don't know. I think it's cultural.
- 17:32I was always like did. You have like your family.
- 17:36Did you ever feel like pressure from your family since like
- 17:40being in the Midwest? Were they always like?
- 17:42Were they ever like there was an?
- 17:43Assumption that I would have a kid.
- 17:45For sure. Yeah.
- 17:46But they weren't like, there was no like pressuring of that.
- 17:51Not too much. Because both my parents are
- 17:53warriors and I know, I think my mom knew I would like, knew I
- 17:58would get there. And my dad, I think was also
- 18:00like is such a realist and a reverse.
- 18:02And he would be like, well, yeah, the money.
- 18:04And obviously, you know, like, I can understand why you wouldn't
- 18:07want to. But he was very encouraging.
- 18:09I mean, he was very much, my dad was very much like, it's not
- 18:12stopping other people like, like the state of the world.
- 18:15So he was a little bit like, you're a good person.
- 18:17You shouldn't. Get, you know, Yeah, yeah,
- 18:19right. He has like more good people
- 18:21should have kids and maybe. Yeah.
- 18:23Things that was sort. Of his.
- 18:25I remember him kind of giving me a pep talk about it at one point
- 18:28when I was on the fence. Yeah.
- 18:29So what was your reaction then when you found out you were
- 18:32pregnant of like and how did you being superstitious, did you
- 18:38keep it to yourself for a while or like like we.
- 18:41Told reps or yeah we I found out while I was back home in the
- 18:47Midwest. I had been shooting this little
- 18:49indie pilot in Minnesota and then, and then I went to
- 18:54Wisconsin and my mom lives on a farm and has these big dogs and
- 18:58my husband's really, really allergic.
- 18:59So when we go there, we now stay at a hotel really close by to
- 19:03her. If, if, if he's with me, if I'm
- 19:05not, I'll stay there. But so we were at this hotel and
- 19:08I had all those like, you know, those pee strips and stuff.
- 19:09And I was just like, I had just like taken 1 and I was like, oh
- 19:13shit, it's, oh, it's positive. Like it was just such a like, it
- 19:15was sort of like a nod event. And I was like.
- 19:17Yeah. Oh, babe, I'm so sorry.
- 19:20Like, well, you probably just weren't like, I wasn't saying
- 19:23it. Yeah, 'cause I was like, oh, I
- 19:25really need my throat, you know, like I was kind of feeling, I
- 19:26was like a little crampy. Like I did not, I didn't, you
- 19:29know, my lips didn't hurt. I didn't have, like, I wasn't
- 19:31nauseous, any of those things that you kind of think.
- 19:32And so when it came up positive, I was like.
- 19:36What? Let me and So what was really
- 19:40cool was my one of my childhood best friends like came to the
- 19:44farm to like meet us for brunch. And then I was like, I was like,
- 19:49it's really, do you wanna come just like see me at Walgreens
- 19:52with me and Rob, We're gonna go get like a real pregnancy, some
- 19:55real pregnancy tests and come back hotel.
- 19:56There was something about it felt like we were, I don't know,
- 19:58we were 15 buying hair. Yeah.
- 20:00And then she was like, is it okay?
- 20:01But I'm here and we're like, and we were both.
- 20:03It's really nice that you're here.
- 20:03She has two kids who are much older.
- 20:06So that was also nice to kind of be like.
- 20:08Able to ask her some other questions and like we were like
- 20:11this is normal. Is this happening?
- 20:12What did I what do we do who who can we tell what did we like in
- 20:16in leaning on her? And I know Rob appreciated that
- 20:19too because she kept being like, do you guys want to do this
- 20:21privately? Yeah, right.
- 20:22I'm sure we're like. You know, we're anxious people.
- 20:24We'd prefer. Yeah, we'd.
- 20:26Prefer you there, so sorry. You're good girl, you have a 5
- 20:31month old. Yeah.
- 20:32I no apologies. Well, that's nice that you had
- 20:39that you had. I like to I was you forgot the
- 20:43same where I was like, wait, what?
- 20:44Wait, what? I because I also was very, very
- 20:48lucky. The first pregnancy I ever took
- 20:50in my life was positive and I was like, but I was like, I
- 20:54didn't. I took it like it was the first
- 20:57time we tried. It was the first.
- 20:59It was like the day after my missed period and I was like, I
- 21:04don't know, it's like a day. But I always see the videos of
- 21:09people like, yeah, and then waiting.
- 21:13What were you waiting for? Mine said right away.
- 21:15Mine said like. Like like this COVID test when
- 21:18you were like, oh. Yeah, you know, and it was like.
- 21:20But you think I'm positive Like no, no, when you're positive,
- 21:23it's. Like it's like, yeah, but I.
- 21:24Was like, yeah, my pregnancy test was like like a COVID test.
- 21:29Like just right away. Oh shit.
- 21:32OK. Yeah, I have the same.
- 21:34I was like, oh, I wish I would have like.
- 21:36I know there was some thought. About this, 'cause I see people
- 21:38have these like videos of the whole thing and I was just like,
- 21:42Oh my God, yeah, no idea. So you worked while you were.
- 21:49Pregnant. I did, I did quite a bit, Yeah.
- 21:51When you're like, what did you do when you found out you were
- 21:53pregnant? It was this kind of wild.
- 21:55I started doing the math. It's kind of.
- 21:59I was so like, he didn't know that I was shooting Season 2 of
- 22:03Platonic and I had like just gotten my dates, which was like
- 22:09they were going to kind of be blocked shooting the whole
- 22:11season. So it might be needed at any
- 22:13given time between like August and October.
- 22:15Yeah, because I was going to ask because I feel like that full.
- 22:17Trimester. And then also she must have
- 22:20been. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 22:22And Oh yeah, there were definitely some.
- 22:24Platonic Apple TV. Platonic Apple TV season 2 I'm
- 22:29also at the end of season 1, but season 2 is where it gets juicy
- 22:34and. So you were doing the math,
- 22:38found the math, you were like. How you were gonna will I be
- 22:41while I'm shooting this show? How far ahead did you know that
- 22:44you were gonna be shooting? That like, oh, OK, we'd been
- 22:49waiting like once there was like a season 2 that there was season
- 22:532. Gotcha.
- 22:53Because originally it was like supposed to be a limited like
- 22:57anthology series. Yeah.
- 22:58And so when I got cast, it was like, oh, I got cast this cute
- 23:01little 2 episode guest star, which was amazing for me.
- 23:03I mean, truly mind blowing. Yeah, that's a whole other
- 23:06story. I was in Amsterdam.
- 23:07I auditioned from Amsterdam visit while I was visiting.
- 23:09Rob flew back for it. That was still COVID.
- 23:12I was like, yeah, flew on a Saturday, got to cope this on a
- 23:15Monday, got a fitting on a Monday, and then we're shooting
- 23:18on a Tuesday. And then we shut down for two
- 23:19weeks because of COVID. So I hung out here, you know,
- 23:21like it was wild. But so that in of itself was a
- 23:24wild thing. But this one was we're just sort
- 23:27of, you know, you're just waiting.
- 23:29No, like sort of like it's nobody's fault.
- 23:33But I was really, you know, I'm. Not I wasn't.
- 23:36I know I I. Said this with like love for
- 23:37myself. I wasn't important to know to,
- 23:39you know, way out. You know what I mean?
- 23:41Like though, but yeah, I know, I guess like kind of I feel like
- 23:44when you're and. Then how pregnant?
- 23:46How pregnant? Were you and was I when we
- 23:47finished? I was what, four or five months?
- 23:51I mean I was showing. OK, and what was that like?
- 23:55So I. Or did.
- 23:56You tell wardrobe, OK? Wardrobe was who I told right
- 23:59away. Yeah, and I told wardrobe like I
- 24:01think before I told my dad, because we were still at that
- 24:05like. You knew?
- 24:06Yeah. Yeah, my, my, my might.
- 24:09Need to be a little bit. I feel like all my close friends
- 24:11knew early on because I'm so I hate the don't tell people that
- 24:16you're pregnant because it's like I'm then you're.
- 24:18Alone in this situation it yeah tell.
- 24:20The people in my life, I want to know what's going on with us and
- 24:24what's going on with me. And then if something, if it
- 24:26doesn't work out, then those are the people that we want
- 24:30fireside, you know, for sure. But I hadn't like I hadn't tell
- 24:36some of my family because I didn't want to get their hopes
- 24:38up. And you know, it was a little
- 24:39bit more like I don't I would maybe tell them after the fact
- 24:42if it didn't work out, but I was like, maybe I won't.
- 24:46I don't want us to get too ahead of ourselves.
- 24:48And but I told wardrobe right away.
- 24:54Our amazing like costume designer Candy Lennox, who's
- 24:56currently noted for an Emmy for the studio.
- 24:58She's mind blowing. Oh my God I just finished that
- 25:02show. So good too.
- 25:03So good. So good.
- 25:05And they, that whole crew had just come off of shooting in the
- 25:08studio and then was coming up to shoot platonic.
- 25:10And I told her right away. And I remember she went Rachel,
- 25:14if you knew how many people don't tell me, but it's like, I
- 25:18know she was a mom too. She's a mom too.
- 25:19So she just was like, she's like wardrobe.
- 25:21No, she was like, is this weird? Like, why are you hiding it?
- 25:25But the fact that I told them up front was she also immediately
- 25:28started doing the math. She was like, OK, so how many
- 25:29weeks are you OK? And she had a kid herself, too.
- 25:31So she was like, OK, so I was like, will I be showing?
- 25:33I don't know how this works. And she was like, you probably
- 25:35will by the end. And she's like, OK, let's see,
- 25:38we're probably shooting this episode this time.
- 25:39And so she was like, you know what?
- 25:41So we'll just get multiple sizes of this.
- 25:43Wardrobe. This piece, this piece, this
- 25:45piece. And so that's how we did it and
- 25:47I but she was like, so. Yeah, great.
- 25:49I hope she was pretty bad. Yeah, I think so.
- 25:50Ahead of time. Exactly.
- 25:52Like nobody was scrambling or being like cool, that was a.
- 25:55Story Birch from last. Season for your golf outfit and
- 25:58now we can't get it anymore. So I think that was the other
- 26:00thing is like being able to tell them wasn't just helpful was
- 26:05helpful so that like they had the opportunity to go get.
- 26:07Yeah, what they needed to. And then I didn't deal anybody
- 26:12else. Well, I told my makeup artist
- 26:15knew she like kind of. I told her.
- 26:16And she was. Like I'm sitting.
- 26:17Here too, which I also I feel like it was like the people who
- 26:21I told her her parents were like we knew but I was sitting in
- 26:26her. Makeup chair every you.
- 26:27Know every time I was there and she was kind of seeing me like,
- 26:30you know, so of course she's like, yeah, I figured you were
- 26:33pregnant. And we'd talked about people who
- 26:35had asked if I wanted kids and because that just comes up.
- 26:38I'm 36. It's like also I, I, I have a
- 26:44tendency to ask, but I'm like, oh, do you have kids?
- 26:46You know, like I get very I love.
- 26:47Kids and so. It's something that I feel
- 26:49comfortable talking about to you.
- 26:50And so it would always come back, like, oh, do you guys have
- 26:52kids? Oh, do you want kids?
- 26:53And he'd be like, my response was always, we're working on it.
- 26:56All right, Matt. Where?
- 26:58Where's he? Yeah, well, yeah, so.
- 27:02But then, yeah, I told everybody at the by the end of production,
- 27:05everybody knew, yeah. That's so excited.
- 27:08Did that make you feel well, I guess coming off of 'cause you
- 27:13were had long run on good trouble.
- 27:17So did you feel did that help you like as an actor having
- 27:23kids? Did that help you be like, OK, I
- 27:27feel secure ish in my career or like 'cause?
- 27:33It. Cause seeing it, it's like, oh,
- 27:36she's like from the outside. I'm like, oh, she's, she's, she
- 27:41must feel secure. And like I.
- 27:44Get. It, you know, yeah, I what was
- 27:46nice was like I felt secure in the same way I felt secure about
- 27:50like, OK, we have health insurance, right, Right.
- 27:53It was like we have this window and having platonic felt like
- 27:56this. I mean, it felt like a gift for
- 27:58a million reasons. But if we're really talking just
- 27:59like mommy would reasons, right? True mommy would reasons.
- 28:04I felt secure to have a job doing something I love working,
- 28:10working my butt off. I, I everyone keeps asking like
- 28:14if I was nervous and I was like, oh, I was so nervous.
- 28:15But my teacher John Rosenfeld gave me the best reframe, which
- 28:21was he was like, Rachel, you're nervous because you care.
- 28:24And so every time I'd get really nervous, I'd be like.
- 28:26I care a lot. A lot.
- 28:28I care so much. And so it's like, was it fun?
- 28:30And it was like, it was fun and I cared so much.
- 28:34Yeah. So this would be nerve.
- 28:37Wracking. It's a big.
- 28:39Yeah, it was, it was and, and I had fun, of course I had fun.
- 28:43It was, you know, but it was like first and foremost was that
- 28:46feeling of I care so much and I, I want to do everything I can to
- 28:51put this put this puzzle together as my part of the
- 28:54puzzle anyway for these extraordinary people, to keep
- 28:59the the game analogy going for the extraordinary people who
- 29:01build puzzles all the time. But I did feel like it was like
- 29:07that feeling of like, OK, I feel secure in that I have this
- 29:10thing. Yeah, while I'm pregnant.
- 29:12And so it did it. I feel like it took off.
- 29:16It took off me feeling like I need to book work.
- 29:19I need to book work. After that was done, though, I
- 29:23still I was teaching at John Rosenfeld Studios.
- 29:26Oh, OK. Yeah.
- 29:27I was going to ask if you was like, I teach, I coach.
- 29:30Gotcha. Yeah.
- 29:31I do some e-mail like marketing. I've always had a side.
- 29:34I've always had a side hustle. I'm such a believer in Inside.
- 29:37Hustles. My friends who don't have them,
- 29:40who have been, again, amazing to be able to live off their
- 29:44acting, which I I could have been some little moments.
- 29:47Yeah, I never let go of those, sometimes to my detriment.
- 29:50I think it's like I'm like overdoing it.
- 29:53I'm like sitting in my trailer being like I'm just working on
- 29:55this MailChimp one SEC, you know, trying to navigate all of
- 29:59the little jobs. But but ultimately, I'm so
- 30:04grateful I have them because it's it has felt like I have
- 30:06some a little safety. Yeah.
- 30:08Did you find that that anything changed for you when it came to
- 30:14like auditioning, like while you're pregnant or since you've
- 30:20had her? Have you been auditioning since
- 30:22you've had her? Because you're still still
- 30:26suffice. Yeah.
- 30:28I so I do voice over and I've been doing voice over for many
- 30:33years now. Yeah.
- 30:34So that was the thing I was holding on to while I was
- 30:36really, really pregnant. Even though like, like when kind
- 30:39of theatrical, I was like, I couldn't hide it anymore.
- 30:42You know, it was like, right, And we're going out for like a
- 30:44commercial where I was like, OK, I have this big blazer on and I
- 30:48can't tell that I'm pregnant from the front.
- 30:50And it was like, what if I turned sideways and.
- 30:52Can really see you and. Then I had AI had a very rough
- 30:56third trimester. I had cholostasis of the liver,
- 31:00the liver condition, but I did not know about it's genetic man.
- 31:05I didn't know Brandon, my family anyway, it's I had itchy hands
- 31:08and feet, especially at night, and it was such a bizarre
- 31:12specific symptom. I immediately Googled it and it
- 31:14was like liver issue. And I was like, OK, well, let's
- 31:17not rely on Google. Call my doctor the next morning
- 31:19and he was like, you have a liver condition?
- 31:22And I was like, oh, hi. It was so specific.
- 31:24There was basically there was bile in my blood and it's like
- 31:28having a mosquito bite on the inside.
- 31:31It was. Atrocious.
- 31:33Awful. I slept more during the newborn
- 31:35phase than I did during my last trimester.
- 31:38I was more comfortable in the new form of days than I was
- 31:42during my last trimester. So during the third trimester,
- 31:44at one point, Rob sees me get out of the voiceover booth after
- 31:49like spending an hour. I was like shaking because I,
- 31:51he's itchy and so unheardable. Spending an hour on something
- 31:55that normally would have taken me 15 minutes.
- 31:57Oh God. And he's like, what are you
- 31:59doing? And I was like, I just, you
- 32:01know, I just, I just, I got this good game.
- 32:03I just wanted to get, I just want to get that audition.
- 32:05And he's like, Can you imagine if you booked that job right
- 32:08now? And I was like, right, I'll send
- 32:12my agents an e-mail. And they were so supportive.
- 32:14They were like, of course, Rachel, take care of yourself.
- 32:16Oh my God. Like.
- 32:17You know, we're sending our best like they were so.
- 32:20I feel like we put so much pressure on our cells.
- 32:22I can do this. It's like.
- 32:24People are like. This is rude, no?
- 32:26For the love of God, please take care.
- 32:28Of yourself, yeah. So I but I went back to Vio a
- 32:31few months ago. OK.
- 32:32And what's the 1st that has felt a couple months felt a little
- 32:38insane 'cause it's like sneaking in, doing it, sneaking in after
- 32:44bedtime, which changes all the time.
- 32:46I'm like, it really feels like, oh, Rachel's career aspirations
- 32:50are at the bottom of the totem pole.
- 32:52Not because my husband's doing anything wrong, but it's like he
- 32:54has nine to five hours that are not movable in the same way.
- 32:57This is this sort of movable thing and like.
- 33:04And what made you feel like you were ready to like, I mean, I
- 33:08guess besides I missed it financially.
- 33:10Oh OK, I missed it. That's nice, I missed it.
- 33:14I and I currently miss acting so much.
- 33:18I'd been in an acting class both as a student and a teacher.
- 33:22Well, as a teacher for many for a handful of years, but as a
- 33:24student pretty much consistently taking a few months off the
- 33:28holidays and blah blah blah for the past 10 years.
- 33:30Yeah. And that they always say like,
- 33:33how much are you acting during the week?
- 33:35And I, whether or not I was on set, even when I would be on set
- 33:38for good trouble, I remember like say to my classmates, I was
- 33:41like, I miss class. And they were like, what are you
- 33:43talking about? You're on set.
- 33:44I miss, I miss being in the lead with you guys.
- 33:46I miss doing, you know, being a being a coaster against her is
- 33:52an amazing, amazing privilege and a gift and saying one line
- 33:59over the course of 12 hours, it isn't going to fulfill your
- 34:02creative like ability to like connect with another human the
- 34:06same way that like doing a full scene or doing several scenes or
- 34:09watch other. People.
- 34:10Connect or work, rehearse and all that stuff.
- 34:12It's like that's the goods. So but VO felt like this thing I
- 34:17could return to first because no matter what I look like, you
- 34:23know how my body felt. It's like, let me see if I and
- 34:26it was almost this like, let me see if I can do it.
- 34:29Yeah. And now a few months in, I
- 34:30actually just booked a little commercial this week and I was
- 34:33able to record that in my agents in their booth, which is so
- 34:39there's. I love them so much and.
- 34:43Oh. They have a booth.
- 34:45They have a booth. I do auditions at home, yet like
- 34:49the fact I'd never done, I'd never done a job that they were
- 34:51like, you can come to use our booth and I was like, yeah.
- 34:53I can. I love you.
- 34:54Because I was, it was that like how long I get up with the baby
- 34:56and like, I keep her quiet and trying to figure this out and
- 34:59they're all so supportive and yeah, they got up here.
- 35:03Quiet, yeah. Yeah, So yeah, VO has felt now.
- 35:09Now VO feels good. And even though I'm tired and
- 35:12I'll finish the day and I'm like, I got to be able to do.
- 35:14And I'm like, oh, wait, let me do this.
- 35:16Wait, let me do this. Like it's fun.
- 35:18I like it. And I just went back to
- 35:19commercials. Yeah, I'm going to tell you
- 35:21right now, we're in the messy middle of commercials.
- 35:23I taped a couple. I had my first call back, but
- 35:26I've taped A handful and they it's like we just moved.
- 35:31My taping setup doesn't feel right yet.
- 35:32I don't really have a rhythm of doing the hair and the makeup.
- 35:35Yeah. Like I did pre.
- 35:36You're in the growing. Growing pains.
- 35:38Yeah, it feels like I'm back. To, you know, when you first
- 35:42move out here, we first start doing self tapes and every time
- 35:44you get one you're like, oh God, how what am I going to do?
- 35:46Where am I going to go? I don't have a set up yet.
- 35:48It. Kind of feels like I'm back in
- 35:50that feeling. Yeah.
- 35:52Even though I'm like I know what to.
- 35:54Do I get that? Yeah, yeah, that.
- 35:57Feels like being a mom now. It's like everything feels.
- 36:00Well, everything is constantly changing the sleep schedule.
- 36:05Then it's like once you figure something out, then something
- 36:08else changes. And then it's like, oh, I can't
- 36:11self tape in her room now because now she's in her room
- 36:14and now I have to have a self tape in the living room and now
- 36:18I have to. But now she's sleeping this
- 36:20time. It's like we've gone backwards
- 36:22to where we were like at the beginning of our careers when we
- 36:24didn't have those things figured out.
- 36:25Yeah, that's what. Yeah, that's what momming and
- 36:28auditioning I feel like, but I haven't heard.
- 36:31I have not auditioned actually yet.
- 36:34And it's sort of my talking to my therapist about it that I was
- 36:36like, it's my hope that this, all these, I'm just calling them
- 36:41rusty feelings and trying not to be like, I feel like shit, but
- 36:47that's what they are. And it's like, I feel like shit.
- 36:48Rusty feelings. You're like, oh, I don't want to
- 36:49do. This they're like, oh, this is
- 36:51bad or like. Why am I not asleep right now or
- 36:54like, why am I sending this in? This is terrible.
- 36:57Like all of those feelings are all back.
- 36:59And I'm like a little hoping that commercials are in some
- 37:03ways they're lower. They are they're lower stakes.
- 37:06They're certainly they're for me, not for everybody, but
- 37:08they're certainly lower stakes for me.
- 37:10And they're usually shorter and you don't have to memorize
- 37:13things so that I can have the growing pains of that.
- 37:16But I, no, I know. I'm pretty certain that the
- 37:18first theatrical I go back to will feel, you know, that like
- 37:22rusty. Rusty.
- 37:25Call it rusty. Yeah, Rusty.
- 37:28What do you feel like has surprised you most?
- 37:31Because like you said, there are random things like I didn't know
- 37:34about the itchy hands things or like there's always things where
- 37:37you're like I didn't know this was the thing.
- 37:39What surprised you most about motherhood thus far?
- 37:46I mean some of the like, there's like little like the logistics
- 37:49of it all of like so many folds, this little chalk and, and you
- 37:55got to especially for a girl, for a girl, so many folds.
- 37:58And we, you know, really dive in it.
- 38:01It's like, how'd you get poop there?
- 38:03How, how, how, how and and just like, you know, we, we do bath
- 38:10every night. That's just like hard for our
- 38:12bedtime routine and like, but then like the next day, I'll
- 38:15like they'll be like a crease on her thigh and I'll be like, oh,
- 38:17it's a little red there. Oh my gosh, did we not get soap
- 38:19out? Oh my gosh, yeah, we got to put
- 38:21diaper cream there. Like, were we not washing under
- 38:23her neck? Like how many folds does she
- 38:25have under that little? Does she even have a neck?
- 38:27Like so that stuff is the stuff that I think kind of constantly
- 38:31just being like, did you check all the folds?
- 38:38Oh, she sounds like she must be scrutious.
- 38:40She is. A marshmallow?
- 38:43Yeah, she's got kings, Hawaiian rolls up and down those arms
- 38:47number down. Those legs beat.
- 38:49Her up. Oh my God, that's so short.
- 38:51And then the others, the surprising, perhaps more
- 38:54emotional pieces is it's only happened a couple times, but
- 39:02when there have been moments where I feel a little conviction
- 39:06about knowing my child, it's a level of confidence that I feel
- 39:10like I maybe wasn't attuned to. Before.
- 39:14Like, even like the platonic premiere, we'd been trying to
- 39:18see if we can get a babysitter who, like, came over to, like,
- 39:20try it out and stay with, you know, while I was home so that
- 39:24Rob could come with me. And we did finally, a trial
- 39:27where I left the house just four months.
- 39:30I'm just a little, little baby. And it didn't work for you.
- 39:36Like it wasn't just she screamed.
- 39:37We knew she was going to cry like.
- 39:38Of course, yeah. But Rob happened, he was in the
- 39:41office and working. And so he had told her.
- 39:43And she was like, we were very like, we know she's going to
- 39:45cry. And everybody was so sweet.
- 39:46And she's like, yeah, I know she's going to cry.
- 39:47Like we're ready. And he was like, and I'm in
- 39:51meetings, but if, of course, if there's an emergency, come get
- 39:53me. And he said when I got back that
- 39:56he like came out and he was like, she was crying so hard
- 39:59that she her face was red and splotchy and her eyes were like
- 40:02swollen shut. And he's like, I've never heard
- 40:05that cry before. And I was sort of grateful that
- 40:09he was there to hear it because then he went, I'm not going.
- 40:12To go, Yeah. You go, this is your, you know
- 40:16your, it's a career moment for you and enjoy it.
- 40:19And you can also rest easy knowing that I'm home with our
- 40:21daughter. And yeah, because that would be
- 40:23a whole other thing. He's gone and worried about it.
- 40:26And his babysitter was so sweet. She even, she came.
- 40:29Well, I got glammed up like while I had a hair and make up
- 40:31person, she was there with me. So it was like she was still
- 40:33able to help. She's like, I'm sorry.
- 40:34We were like, no, no, you're doing nothing wrong.
- 40:37Bree's not ready yet And and that's OK and that's OK.
- 40:42And it was like, just because I'm ready, she's not.
- 40:45Yeah. And I think once we knew that,
- 40:48it was like, I'm not going to do that.
- 40:50I'm not going to leave her. And I got a lot of advice, like,
- 40:53it's good for her. Just do it, you know, or like,
- 40:55and it was like, and maybe that would be true down the line.
- 40:58It's not right now. And yeah, so I feel like getting
- 41:03and we're still just at the beginning like getting very
- 41:06like, what do you what do you need kiddo?
- 41:09And that's got to be a balance rate of like I imagine I there's
- 41:12like you no more I. Was like, not I'm like, yeah,
- 41:14don't look at me. I don't know.
- 41:16But just like, what are things we want to teach you?
- 41:19And there's going to be boundaries and structure around
- 41:21that. And that also, where are some
- 41:23moments where she's going to tell us what she needs?
- 41:26And we go, all right kiddo. Yeah.
- 41:28That's it, all right. It doesn't matter if I want this
- 41:30to be the case. It's not right now.
- 41:31So yeah, I feel like that confidence, like you said as a
- 41:36mom knowing, knowing your kid a little bit is like, has that
- 41:45confidence been able to like show up and other ways at all?
- 41:49Like, yeah, I think around. Auditioning like if we like if.
- 41:53We're yes or no that like do you find it easier to be like that
- 41:59you. I haven't turned anything down
- 42:01yet. I hate saying careless but.
- 42:04Just like I was able to like I had AI had coffee with one of my
- 42:08with my theatrical agent and after all that happened.
- 42:11And so I was able to say to him like, hey, I thought I thought
- 42:16we were all systems go. Not so much.
- 42:21Yeah. Like, I don't know that I don't
- 42:23know that she's ready, or that we're both ready to, or that
- 42:26both her and I are as ready as I thought we were, you know?
- 42:29But you. Were able to have that
- 42:30conversation with your reps and they're not like.
- 42:33No, it's, but I have heard stories of people losing the
- 42:36reps for that reason too. It's like, it's not that.
- 42:37It's certainly not a guarantee, you know, I just happen to have,
- 42:39I guess you're. You've been working well for
- 42:42them. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 42:43So I was like, yeah, we're in a yeah, I'm certainly in a, again,
- 42:48a privileged position, yeah. But it is nice for you to know
- 42:52like, OK, I'll do the voice over.
- 42:55I'll start here. I'll do commercials and then
- 42:59like. And I've said to.
- 43:00Them like. Listen, if there's something
- 43:02that shoots next spring, yeah, like there's a film that's not
- 43:06the cause. It's like, when do we ever get
- 43:07that amount of time? Right.
- 43:08But it basically it's saying like, I can't.
- 43:10No, I listen, would I love to go into high potential shooting
- 43:13next week? You bet you're Yeah, but or any
- 43:17of the other shows they're casting right now, you know,
- 43:19like, yeah, Satan's medical. I was just like I cook people
- 43:22and you know, we all know who what's on shooting right now.
- 43:24Would I love to go out for those things?
- 43:25Yes. That shoots next week.
- 43:29Is that logistically going to work out for my family?
- 43:31I don't think so, yeah. Which is so.
- 43:35Hard to so hard. It's so hard because then I
- 43:38yeah, not because I want, no, I would love to go do those
- 43:42things. I would love it.
- 43:43But not necessarily that you're saying no to the things you're
- 43:47getting. It's just like knowing that you
- 43:49are not there yet. Yeah, it's been really hard.
- 43:54And that's it's. Probably easier or at least a
- 43:57better thing to like know that you're not there yet instead of
- 44:00like getting the auditions and be like this would be amazing.
- 44:04But actually, it's kind of. But then secretly not wanting it
- 44:07or like secretly hoping you don't get it or something like
- 44:09that. Yeah, put that.
- 44:11Energy on Yeah, and then it's going to start.
- 44:14Auditioning. After I made the mistake.
- 44:18Of I just went right, right back.
- 44:21Right on back I have a a photo. I feel like I should share it I
- 44:28guess on. Open Zoo.
- 44:30Because I took a picture of myself, I did, I think it, I
- 44:34think it was like a commercial. I didn't have anything like.
- 44:38Of. Substance, we'll say for a bit,
- 44:41but I did commercial and I don't know just I think it was like 2
- 44:48weeks after and I put AI had my pants were fully unbuttoned to
- 44:54here and I had a shirt over it and then I took a picture.
- 44:58I was like, this is ridiculous. What am I doing?
- 45:00I can't, I mean, what am I ever going to wear pants?
- 45:04But just in my head of like having that visual of like I'm
- 45:10not ready. What?
- 45:11Am I? What am I?
- 45:12Doing but yeah, but I went and but yeah, I don't know if that
- 45:22was this smart. Is it a spoiler?
- 45:24I did not book it. Yeah, and it was.
- 45:28Probably because I wasn't ready and I was putting it like, what
- 45:32if I do get those? But I definitely think that
- 45:34seeing I remember running into my friend Ziggy.
- 45:38I think she just remember like her second baby at a commercial
- 45:41edition and I was like, Gee, what are you doing here?
- 45:43Like at 200 S of the rain? I was like, what are you doing
- 45:45here? Just her baby.
- 45:46And she's like, I did, I did, but I'm back, baby.
- 45:50And like, and it seeing her do that, though, like made me feel
- 45:54like I could have a kid like that.
- 45:57It wasn't because I think the story I was telling myself was
- 46:00like, if I have a kid, this all stops.
- 46:02Yeah, if I have a kid, this is over.
- 46:04If I. Have a kid too, doesn't.
- 46:06Yeah, she's too. Yeah.
- 46:07And she works. There's only so many Segas.
- 46:09Yeah, Yeah. Oh, yeah.
- 46:10Yeah. And she makes that mom count,
- 46:12too. Yeah.
- 46:14But like, and a gal, I had been on good trouble with this gal,
- 46:17Shannon. I remember seeing Shannon back
- 46:20in an audition room and I was like, did you just have a baby?
- 46:23She's like, I did. And I was like, show me a
- 46:24picture. You know, it was like I did.
- 46:26And I think seeing I think my brain had separated my friends
- 46:34with kids and my friends from Wisconsin and my friends from
- 46:36home. And then I have a few friends
- 46:37that had kids here, but I kept kind of like pushing those
- 46:42people. I'd be like, oh, well, they have
- 46:43family who live in town or Oh well, they have this or well,
- 46:45that's why this works for them or that's why this works for
- 46:47them. And I couldn't because then you
- 46:51know, it won't work out. It won't work out, it won't work
- 46:53out. All of those things that go into
- 46:54your head of like This is why it won't work.
- 46:56And so I think it was so, so even though you weren't ready, I
- 46:59even go like, you know, anybody you ran into at that early time,
- 47:03like seeing my friends who I ran into at that, that maybe they
- 47:06went back and maybe I don't know if they felt they went back to
- 47:08early or not. They certainly seemed like they
- 47:11were ready to be were really inspiring for me to go got it.
- 47:14You can't have a baby and then come back.
- 47:16Yeah. And I'm just still really in the
- 47:20middle of figuring out, yeah, what that looks like.
- 47:24Well, I think that's the trick to knowing that I feel like I
- 47:30always thought I, you know, I feel like most of us, it's like
- 47:33the older you get, the more you realize, Oh, nobody knows what
- 47:36they're doing. And that's why because I started
- 47:40mommy would like, I think May was two months because I was
- 47:43like. What?
- 47:45Are people doing where I could see like, oh, well, this is easy
- 47:50to defend. Like they're like super
- 47:53successful. I can see like how this works
- 47:56'cause they have the resources or I could see, oh, they have
- 48:00parents or whoever nearby. And then I was like, no, there
- 48:04have to be more people in my situation where we're not
- 48:10necessarily, you know, superstars here yet.
- 48:15But then it's like, how are, how is that?
- 48:20Yeah, happening? And it's like, yeah, we're all
- 48:22just figuring it out. All of us were on like the
- 48:23picket lines. You feel like there's some big
- 48:25kids on the picket lines and you're like the I think this
- 48:30industry can be so like there are there's so many people in
- 48:33this, in this chunk in this, in this, people who work sometimes
- 48:40and it and it I don't even think it's like sometimes people are
- 48:42like you either make your living on it or you don't.
- 48:44And I was like, no, you can't you get a nice check and
- 48:46sometimes that just pays your rent and and, and there are
- 48:49times in my life where that that the check from acting was was
- 48:52like paid for the treats was like a special like I booked a
- 48:55job. This is treat money.
- 48:56And now acting money is more like, OK, cool, this is rent
- 48:58money when I work. And so that has shifted.
- 49:03But like I said, I was like, I've always kept those side jobs
- 49:05so that, you know, we're and I feel like, and I also like voice
- 49:10over to me is also like, though it is part of the acting
- 49:13umbrella. It feels like that's his other
- 49:14right. That's that's within that
- 49:18because I don't feel like not everybody who does theatrical
- 49:22needs to do voice over. People are always like, should I
- 49:24get into voice over? And I was like, if you're good
- 49:26at tech, if you would tell me they don't know how to edit
- 49:29something on their phone, I was like, you should not do those.
- 49:31Oh man. Yeah, no, I feel like people
- 49:34think it's so much. Easier.
- 49:38Because. Because you don't.
- 49:39Have to memorize. Don't have to memorize and you
- 49:41don't have to. You don't necessarily get
- 49:42dressed, but it's like. Do you have to edit your own
- 49:45stone? No, no, you are your own sound
- 49:47engineer. It's not the same.
- 49:49And once like people are people are doing it like, oh, I feel.
- 49:57Like at the bottom of the barrel of Vio still, even though I now
- 49:59have like, you know, I've done a handful of cartoons or like
- 50:04video games. It's like, Oh no, I'm a Vio
- 50:06artist. And I'm like, I bowed down to
- 50:07your skill set. That is easy to just play
- 50:10career. And I'm just like, I'll just do
- 50:14flights over. It's like you're ready to go
- 50:16against people who do it 24/7, you know, like, yeah, yeah, the
- 50:20same with the FA, right? It's like if you're not.
- 50:23It's hard to get into. It yeah, for sure, just like
- 50:26everything. Just like everything.
- 50:28All right, we're gonna do a rapid fire.
- 50:30Oh sweet. OK, cool all.
- 50:32Right. But I can also just like talk to
- 50:35you. I know that's how it happens
- 50:36sometimes. Lovely.
- 50:38I'm like, did we? Did we say anything useful?
- 50:41I know I always do that. And then I'm like, oh, I should
- 50:43like ask you some, OK. Hit me.
- 50:47After bedtime or nap time or anytime coffee or wine.
- 50:53Coffee. Yeah, what's more, nerve racking
- 50:57auditions or the sleep training? Right now we're at Sleep, sleep,
- 51:02sleep 5. Seven.
- 51:04OK, if you have to memorize, memorize lines or fold laundry,
- 51:09which one's coming first? I'm going to read the lines into
- 51:13a voice memo, including all the actions and all the other
- 51:15characters lines. I'm going to listen to it while
- 51:16I'm doing laundry. Moms are multi town a self tape
- 51:22setup 10 minutes. Two hours, 10 minutes.
- 51:27Yeah. What's the cute thing your kids
- 51:31doing right now? I love everything.
- 51:35Yeah. I mean, everything she, well,
- 51:39it's just changed now. She's waking up crying
- 51:40sometimes, but very often in the morning, it's like when she
- 51:43wakes up and you're like, open the blinds, she'll look at me
- 51:46with this big smile, like you're here again.
- 51:52And I always thought, oh, yeah, it's good to see you.
- 51:55And she just gives me this big smile and it's just, I melt.
- 51:59Oh my God, I'm going to ask you for so many pictures after this.
- 52:04What do you feel like your biggest mom fail has been so far
- 52:07and your biggest mom win? I feel like your babysitting
- 52:11moment was a win, but I'll let you answer.
- 52:14Yeah, that was a good. That was a win.
- 52:17I'm like, like you said that. I was like, oh man, I put her in
- 52:20the high chair this week and I hit her in the head with the
- 52:24tray. I just felt such an ass.
- 52:26I know my husband survived. She was fine.
- 52:29She didn't even ever breathe the next day.
- 52:30But I was like, I'm so sorry. And like my nails were long
- 52:33after the premiere. I'd like got a manicure and and
- 52:37she jerked her head forward because we're in a really jerky
- 52:40head movement and like my finger went into her mouth and she got
- 52:44cut and I just was like, it's those moments when I'm just
- 52:46like, Oh my God, I'm so sorry. She was she just that it's like
- 52:52she has that like she looks at me before she cries like what
- 52:55just happened? You know, I just want to do to
- 52:58me. So those have felt terrible.
- 53:01Oh my gosh. And my yeah, mom went
- 53:04definitely. I was like, Oh, yeah, you're
- 53:06knowing that the premiere stuff, like knowing that.
- 53:09And then sometimes I feel like such AII feel like such a like
- 53:16it's such a win win. Like I'll be like, oh, she needs
- 53:19this. She needs food or she needs, oh,
- 53:22she just needs her pacifier. Like from like across the room
- 53:24or from downstairs. I'll be like, oh, I think she
- 53:26needs to be held right now. And he'll be like, OK, or like,
- 53:31or like with my mom or I'm like, oh, I think she probably wants
- 53:34this. And like when, when those are
- 53:35right, I'm like, I think she probably wants some tummy time.
- 53:37My mom's like, OK, and we went back home and it was like she
- 53:40did those feel like such twins. You're like, I know my girl, I
- 53:44know her. This.
- 53:46Would not happen all the time and it's like.
- 53:50We're usually in the in between. What is always in your diaper
- 53:55bag besides diapers? Yeah, diapers.
- 54:00Her little sunglasses, which she loves and are honestly really
- 54:04great for when she falls asleep in the because then they they
- 54:07black out. Like it makes darkness smart and
- 54:10they're still cute. Smart.
- 54:13OK. During nap time, are you
- 54:15napping? Are you doing stuff?
- 54:19I up until a week ago I would have said I was doing everything
- 54:23doing laundry and meal prep and and my other jobs and VO and but
- 54:29this last week has been a very like this girl needs we're
- 54:32napping this some regulation. It's more like I'm so I'm
- 54:36regulating my kid. Yeah, so I need to lay down with
- 54:38her. Yeah, yeah.
- 54:40It's hard. When people are like, nap when
- 54:42nap, when the baby nap. It's like, yeah.
- 54:44Yeah, yeah, with my art. Position this way.
- 54:46And my boob out and like leaning in this direction and then I'm
- 54:49like trying to hit like the timer on my phone to be like,
- 54:51she's napping now. OK, I would love to be napping.
- 54:55But yes, right now we're regulating.
- 54:58Yeah, good. Each other.
- 55:00Regulate yourself. You should.
- 55:02OK, this is not a rapid fire. But last question for you.
- 55:08OK, if you're looking back at yourself years from now, what do
- 55:12you? Oh my God, I'm going to cry.
- 55:14I'm such a mom. I hate it.
- 55:16I do this all the time. What do you want your kids to
- 55:20remember? Oh, I made him cry too, because
- 55:27it's like when they're babies. That I, I started wondering now
- 55:31I'll give you time to think because I've started wondering
- 55:33now I'm like, now that my daughter's three, I'm like, oh,
- 55:36she's going to probably start remembering stuff and I'm like,
- 55:38what's going to be her like first memory?
- 55:41Well, I did turn to my husband last week and I was like, did
- 55:43you feel listened to as a child? And he was like, I don't think
- 55:47so. And I was like, add that to the
- 55:48list, OK, you know? Right.
- 55:50It's like, what do I focus on? What did my parents not do that
- 55:53I'm going to do? What am I missing?
- 55:56Yeah, my one of my best friends from from home, Erin always says
- 56:00she's like, she goes. I don't mind if my boys go to
- 56:02therapy. I just hope it's for a different
- 56:03reason than me. I kind of like that.
- 56:05Yeah. What was the question?
- 56:09What if you look at? Years from now, looking back,
- 56:12what do you hope your diarrhoea remembers?
- 56:15Remembers like she. Remembers laughing and dancing
- 56:19and and cooking is one of my favorite things I like already I
- 56:24already love dancing and giggling with her and we're like
- 56:29just the very beginning of solids.
- 56:32You know, we had some avocado and, and trying to like, so I I
- 56:40hope she has good memories of that.
- 56:43Yeah, like of of being silly. And what would you tell another
- 56:51new actor, mom or actor who's thinking of becoming a mom?
- 56:57That's. A good question.
- 57:00Let's go with actor who's thinking of becoming a mom.
- 57:03OK, an actor who's thinking of becoming a mom.
- 57:11I I'm like I would say I'm I'm like I'm still I'm almost like
- 57:17I'm still learning what I would say to them that I think my best
- 57:22guess is somewhere between is like rely on like ask for help,
- 57:30ask for help, ask for help, rely on your friends.
- 57:33I'm so bad at asking for help and having kids change the way I
- 57:38how Ioffer help too. Like it's made me be like, Oh my
- 57:42God, I'm never going to say if you need anything let me know.
- 57:44I'm going to Instead, I'm going to say, hey, I'll be over at
- 57:47your house. Is Thursday or Friday better for
- 57:50me to drop off a meal. That's how ioffer help.
- 57:52Now we don't say whenever you need it.
- 57:54Let me know. I know.
- 57:55You'll never find out. Yeah, you'll never hear back.
- 57:59But I the way our village has shown up for us is so
- 58:04remarkable. And so I think it's in a lot of
- 58:06ways not dissimilar from how I think you survive this business
- 58:10and acting in general, which is community and I I mean, and in
- 58:18this political climate, I go, what do you mean?
- 58:21What? Everything's great.
- 58:23What do you mean fascism? I had to do it.
- 58:27And but I think how we survive as each other.
- 58:31And so again, if you're lucky enough to have family, awesome,
- 58:34you know them, but also community.
- 58:39I think that's how we do it. I think I even when I put out
- 58:45the call for like, Hey, anybody have any babysitters?
- 58:47The amount of friends who said, you know, if you're in a pinch,
- 58:48you'd let me know. If you're in a pinch, you'd let
- 58:50me know. And I wrote all those people.
- 58:52I wrote all your names down on an excel sheet and I cried.
- 58:56It's like, it's so amazing. And I think that's I, it's, I'm,
- 59:03and I'm hoping that I'm hoping that what I'm saying is is how I
- 59:06will do it because we're still just at the beginning.
- 59:09We're and I am scared about when that theatrical booking comes
- 59:17because I do, because I do have enough belief in myself that the
- 59:20next that it will come. I don't know when.
- 59:24And not knowing when is always the like the heart, the heart of
- 59:28it all. But but when it does that, we'll
- 59:32have to figure it out. And I feeling the answer will be
- 59:35in in each other. Yeah, yeah.
- 59:38I love that. Well, thank you for being so
- 59:41much everyone. It's been so lovely.
