Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:11Every Monday through Thursday. I'm your host Lauren Meisner,
- 0:15the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:20Welcome back to mini scroll, everyone.
- 0:21Happy Thursday. Let's just get straight into the
- 0:24stories for today. So the first story that I have
- 0:27for you guys is that Brianna Chicken Fry has quote UN quote,
- 0:31exposed her friendship with Grace O'Malley.
- 0:35In a new episode of the BFFS podcast released today, Brianna
- 0:39opened up about the reality or her reality of her friendship
- 0:43with Grace. So I won't rehash everything
- 0:45I've talked about this 100 different times on this podcast.
- 0:49But after Grace posted that series of Instagrams claiming
- 0:54that Brianna shared the news that their joint podcast plan
- 0:58Brienne Cutt was basically not coming back.
- 1:01So Brianna posted that on Instagram stories, Grace posted
- 1:05a three-part series saying that she was blindsided by this, not
- 1:09blindsided by the news that plan Bri wasn't coming back, but
- 1:11blindsided that Brianna announced it without letting
- 1:14them do like a joint announcement.
- 1:16So now that Instagram series set off an entire, like, backlash
- 1:21against Bri. So Bri has sat down on the BFFS
- 1:25podcast to address it. OK, so it started with Brianna
- 1:28going on about how she gave Grace so much.
- 1:31She said she moved to New York City with her.
- 1:33She let her third wheel her relationships.
- 1:36She basically implied that she like, handed her a career by
- 1:40like, advocating for Grace to join her podcast, kind of like
- 1:43giving her that platform. She then talked about how her
- 1:46relationship with Grace changed when she started dating Zach
- 1:50Bryan. She implied that Grace was
- 1:53unable throughout that relationship to separate her
- 1:56friendship with Brianna from her hatred for Zach Bryan.
- 2:01And Bri said she was a bad friend in, you know, their
- 2:05relationship when she was dating Zach because she was, like,
- 2:07wrapped up in something so toxic.
- 2:10And she thought that she and Grace at one point this year had
- 2:14kind of hashed it all out. But then Grace like never
- 2:17supported her, her she felt like she never supported her.
- 2:20So she was like, there was this huge rift in our friendship
- 2:24because of Zach. But she also kept saying that
- 2:26these were two separate issues. Like she kept trying to I think
- 2:29insinuate that Grace and Brianna having their issues was not
- 2:33directly related to Zach, but there were issues in their
- 2:36friendship because of Zach as well.
- 2:39She also said she decided to end the podcast and the friendship
- 2:43with Grace. So she said it was her decision
- 2:45to do these things. She said she was tired of plan
- 2:48just being an outlet for the Internet to bully her and she
- 2:52was tired of Grace never standing up for her on social
- 2:55media, given Grace knew everything that she was going
- 2:58through this past year. And then she said that the
- 3:01reason why Grace wouldn't stand up for her on social media was
- 3:04that it made Grace look better to the audience and that helped
- 3:08Grace's comedy career. She also talked about how the
- 3:10audience pit them against each other, Which I do.
- 3:13I do see that. I think next to Brianna, Grace
- 3:18looked really, really good. And I'm not saying that Grace is
- 3:20not a good person, but I'm just saying I think it was easy for
- 3:25audiences to look at the duo and be like, oh, Grace is the good
- 3:29one and Brianna is the mean one or whatever.
- 3:32The one that we don't like. And there's good reason for why
- 3:35people don't like Brianna. Chicken fry.
- 3:37Like, absolutely. But I do think that
- 3:39juxtaposition of the two of them together, it almost put Grace on
- 3:43this pedestal for the audience. Friendships go through riffs and
- 3:46breakups and stuff like this, like this.
- 3:48This happens every single day. And.
- 3:50Grace's, Grace's and I relationship like while I was
- 3:53dating Zach like that these are two separate conversations.
- 3:56Like I would go to her and be like, but I feel like because
- 3:59you hate Zach so much, like you're you're forgetting to
- 4:03separate that I'm your best friend.
- 4:05Like you can like it's going to make me cry like.
- 4:09You can hate him, but you can still like, be there for me.
- 4:13And she never was. And and she like watched the
- 4:17Internet, like just harp onto it for a fucking year.
- 4:22And like I would this this started in May.
- 4:25Like I went to her in May and I was like Grace, like, you know,
- 4:30everything that I'm going through and you like thank you.
- 4:34And you still like refuse to defend me online because it like
- 4:40helps build you up. They talked about how none of
- 4:44them at Barstool were aware that Grace was going to put out that
- 4:46statement. And they did give her the
- 4:49opportunity to speak on the podcast as well and tell her
- 4:52side of the story. But I guess, I guess she
- 4:55declined, at least for now. All right, so there was not a
- 4:59lot of accountability being taken in this podcast episode.
- 5:04At one point, Dave and Josh were trying to explain to Brianna,
- 5:08both of you guys are hurt. Like Grace has done these things
- 5:11because she's hurt and Brianna's like, but I'm hurt too.
- 5:14It's like, yes. That is actually usually how it
- 5:17works in any type of friendship relationship breakdown.
- 5:21It's typically not just like one solo person feeling the weight
- 5:25of another person's actions without any type of like,
- 5:28retaliation, obligation or reason, right?
- 5:30So yes, like, both parties can be hurt.
- 5:33I'm going to say it sounds like both women feel like the other
- 5:38one was really, really selfish and taking their friendship for
- 5:41granted. That's kind of how it sounds to
- 5:43me. It sounds like Brianna was
- 5:45saying I went through this really horrible year.
- 5:48She knew what I was going through and she was not willing
- 5:53to support me. Like she was too selfish in
- 5:56furthering her career to support me publicly on social media,
- 6:00tell people to stop coming after me.
- 6:02And from what Brianna said to it sounds like Grace felt like
- 6:05Brianna was being selfish in choosing her relationship.
- 6:08Like feeling like she ditched Grace when she got into this
- 6:11relationship. Brianna also mentioned a time
- 6:14when things went really bad with Zach and Grace.
- 6:16I'm assuming it's that campfire story.
- 6:19You know, she said there was like that bonfire, that they had
- 6:21it with friends and then Zach was screaming at one of her
- 6:25friends that she should get like her own life or career.
- 6:28Sorry, I just had a coughing fit.
- 6:30I'm not crying if it looks like I'm crying on camera.
- 6:33So Grace, you know, everyone assumed it was Grace based on
- 6:37the things that she said Zach had said to this person.
- 6:39So anyways, I'm sure that Grace felt like Brianna was selfish
- 6:42and choosing Zach and staying with Zach after he allegedly
- 6:47berated one of her best friends like that, all of these things.
- 6:51But Brianna made it clear, she made it pretty clear at the end
- 6:54that she does not think there is a path forward for her and
- 6:57Grace, which is really sad because they have been best
- 6:59friends for so, so long. OK so the comment section is
- 7:03like a disaster of people just like going after Brianna.
- 7:06So Dave jumped into the comments section.
- 7:09He wrote a pinned comment. He said this is Dave.
- 7:12This pile on Bri here is insane. Nobody wanted to discuss this.
- 7:16Bri originally said she wouldn't but she was getting so much hate
- 7:19we had to. It's all anybody was asking
- 7:21about. Facts are the only reason Bri
- 7:23had to discuss this is because Grace posted that story online.
- 7:27We were all past the drama until that post.
- 7:30You may not like her explanation but she had no choice but to
- 7:32tell her side. And yes, I offered Grace the the
- 7:35chance to sit down and do the exact same thing with Josh and I
- 7:37and Josh and I would try to be as impartial as possible like we
- 7:41were with Bray. I think regardless, it's very
- 7:43clear that both of these women need a big step back from each
- 7:46other. I think they both have very
- 7:49clear like a hurt feelings. Things got really toxic for them
- 7:53this past year. They both need to focus on their
- 7:55own stuff and hopefully one day they can come back together
- 7:59because they've, you know, been friends for so long.
- 8:02But honestly, sometimes it is true.
- 8:03Like sometimes you stay in friendships or relationships
- 8:07because it's like a sunken cost fallacy.
- 8:09And sometimes it is better to just cut people off, even if you
- 8:12have, you know, a ton of history with them.
- 8:14OK, the next story that I have for you guys, Alex Cooper has
- 8:18launched something called Unwell University.
- 8:22OK, so this is like half baked news and you'll see why in a
- 8:27second. But basically we all know that
- 8:29in 2023, Alex launched her media brand, the Unwell Network.
- 8:34So she has podcast casts, merch. A couple weeks ago she launched
- 8:38a hydration drink also called Unwell.
- 8:40So she's building herself a little empire right now on
- 8:44TikTok and Reddit, users have been talking about something
- 8:46called Unwell University. Not a ton is known about it yet,
- 8:51which is why this is kind of half baked.
- 8:53But here is what I could find. Amanda Brown for her college
- 8:56campus.com in an article written yesterday said quote.
- 9:00Apparently Unwell University is a college content creator
- 9:04program that is aimed to showcase the stories of college
- 9:08because any college girl knows that there are a lot and to
- 9:11create a community. According to Unwell University
- 9:14member Lila Ambrose Fleck, there are currently 40 creators who
- 9:19are members of the program who are set to make content
- 9:22throughout the month for Unwell. Many of the 40 creators of
- 9:25Unwell University have taken to TikTok to talk about the Unwell
- 9:28University program, highlight their college experiences,
- 9:31upload content and introduce themselves.
- 9:34So the program apparently launched in November and the
- 9:37content so far is college students posting like get ready
- 9:41with me is day in the lifes going out story times about like
- 9:45messy partying and dating experiences and party
- 9:48compilations, things like that. So I absolutely get the concept.
- 9:52I think it aligns well with Alex Cooper's brand.
- 9:55I do think it's an interesting concept.
- 9:58I think it's a cool like fresh take on like the college
- 10:01ambassadorship. But of course there are
- 10:03criticisms. So so far the criticism against
- 10:07this venture is that this content that the college
- 10:10ambassadors or college like content creators are encouraged
- 10:15to post, possibly even being asked to post, really glorifies
- 10:19that kind of fast and loose college party girl lifestyle.
- 10:23Like asking very young people, especially in the US, some of
- 10:26them might not even be 21 yet, to talk about their experiences,
- 10:31like blacking out and going on dates and hooking up with guys
- 10:36and stuff. For the opportunity to be part
- 10:39of something with Alex Cooper, that content could follow them
- 10:43forever. Those story times could follow
- 10:45them forever. And it's also an opportunity
- 10:47because of Alexis Clout that would be so hard to turn down
- 10:52for anyone, one Reddit user wrote.
- 10:55One thing that does make me uncomfortable though, is sexual
- 10:57assault is still prevalent and glamorizing this behavior
- 11:00without discussing the risks involved, especially in college,
- 11:04is like sending lambs to slaughter.
- 11:06And in response, another user wrote that's why it's a big deal
- 11:09slash not good for women who have money and are older to
- 11:12encourage blacking out and unprotected sex to vulnerable
- 11:15young women who are unlikely to go to their parents, etcetera
- 11:19with questions. OK, so like the reception has
- 11:22been very mixed. Like there is this criticism,
- 11:24but then there's also tons of people who are like when I was
- 11:27in college, all of these like party girl blogs were super
- 11:30popular. Like Girls Gone Wild, Like that
- 11:33was all centered around college girls.
- 11:35And I completely get it. But I also think we can't look
- 11:37at like the 2000s and the 20 tens and be like, well, back
- 11:40then that was OK. So like, this is just the new
- 11:45iteration of that because we all look back on those decades and
- 11:48see how people and the media used to speak about women and
- 11:53sexual assault and body positivity and even the words we
- 11:57used to use back then, like we have progressed.
- 12:00So I don't think that's necessarily like a strong
- 12:03argument. I do think that Alex has a
- 12:05responsibility. Like she's 30 now.
- 12:07She is past that stage of her life.
- 12:10She is incredibly successful. And I think any of us who had
- 12:14that lifestyle at university or college can look back years
- 12:18later and be like, those were the best years ever.
- 12:20I had so much fun. But with some distance, I can
- 12:23see all the times that I almost died or all the times where I
- 12:27was almost in an incredibly dangerous situation if it were
- 12:30not for some random stroke of luck.
- 12:33And I think if I was going to have a giant platform of mostly
- 12:38college aged women, like those are the things that I would want
- 12:42to let them know. Like I had the craziest time at
- 12:46university. I literally was so feral.
- 12:48I was such a party girl. I loved that shit so much.
- 12:52I had the best time. I would encourage women to have
- 12:56fun and party and like just make all those friends and just like
- 12:59have the best four years of your life.
- 13:00And I'm from Canada, so I know it's a little bit different.
- 13:03Like being in Australia now, I know that the university slash
- 13:05college experience is quite different here than it is in
- 13:08North America. But, you know, I had that like
- 13:09very standard North American, like go away for uni and just
- 13:14like live, you know, with my friends for four years and just
- 13:16go nuts. Like, I get it.
- 13:19I want everyone to have that experience because it is the
- 13:22best. But there are so many risks
- 13:24involved. And like being older, having
- 13:26that distance, having my, you know, brain fully developed, I
- 13:30look back and I'm like, OK, if I was going to have a big platform
- 13:34of young women, I would be very considered about how I spoke
- 13:37about that period of time. I think that is one of the
- 13:39biggest issues that people have with Alex Cooper is she
- 13:43positions herself as this big sister to all of these young
- 13:46women, but she glorifies these things that can be so, so
- 13:50dangerous and harmful to them. And like, I do think she can
- 13:53give good advice and I do think she has those elements to her,
- 13:56absolutely. But I think she is still kind of
- 13:59stuck because this is like what she got famous for and This is
- 14:02why she blew up. She's kind of stuck in, like,
- 14:05those younger years. And I don't think she's quite
- 14:09ready to go into the next stage of like, OK, what can we, like,
- 14:13take away from this? And how can I properly, like,
- 14:15educate young women who are listening to me on these topics?
- 14:21How can I help equip them better for their experiences at
- 14:25college? Because everybody deserves to go
- 14:28to college and party and drink with their friends and have the
- 14:31best time ever. But there are of course, tons of
- 14:35really scary, dangerous bad things that can happen in those
- 14:38environments as well. So how do you equip young women
- 14:41who, like this Reddit user said, might not be comfortable talking
- 14:44about these things with their parents or somebody in their
- 14:46life? But I think the concept of
- 14:49Unwell University and having this network of content creators
- 14:52who are making like vlog content about their experience and stuff
- 14:55like, I think that is a really cool idea.
- 14:57And like I said, we don't know too much about it.
- 14:59So to be honest, like what I'm saying here and the way that
- 15:03people perceiving on well, university and the content
- 15:05that's coming out like that might not actually be accurate.
- 15:09So maybe watch this space. If there's any update, I will
- 15:12definitely give it to you guys because maybe maybe I am not
- 15:15being fair, maybe I don't have all of the information on
- 15:18exactly, you know, what these ambassadors or these college
- 15:21content creators are to be creating.
- 15:24OK. And the last right that I have
- 15:25for you guys, this happened literally 5 minutes before I sat
- 15:29down to record Selena Gomez is engaged to Benny Blanco.
- 15:33So we have very limited details, like I said, because it
- 15:36literally just happened. But she announced on Instagram
- 15:40today that they got engaged. The couple have been linked
- 15:44since June 2023, and it looked like they got engaged from home
- 15:48based on the photos. The ring is beautiful.
- 15:51I have no idea what type of cut, how to explain it, but it's like
- 15:55pointy on either end, an Oval in the middle.
- 15:59Is that a diamond? I don't know.
- 16:01It's beautiful. Of course, it's giant.
- 16:03And I mean, she is in her like unbothered happy era.
- 16:07And I'm so, so glad for her because I think there was a time
- 16:11around the beginning of last year and even maybe like the end
- 16:14of like 2022 where I think she was kind of going through it.
- 16:19Like her documentary had come out.
- 16:21And that was actually not as well received I think as she
- 16:25might have hoped. She was being a little bit like
- 16:27messy on TikTok and like a little bit shady in the comments
- 16:30and stuff. And people were just being like,
- 16:33Selena, please take a step back. And I think she did.
- 16:37She started dating Benny. And regardless of how you feel
- 16:40about him, I do think she seems at peace and happy now, which is
- 16:46so sweet. All right, guys, that's it for
- 16:48Mini Scroll today. Thank you so much for listening.
- 16:50Please remember to rate, review and subscribe.
- 16:53We are trying to reach 500 star ratings on Spotify by the end of
- 16:56the year. We are getting there.
- 16:58I think we're like 50 off. I love you guys and I will talk
- 17:02to you. Oh well, there will be a deep
- 17:04dive tomorrow as always and then I'll talk to you on Monday for
- 17:07our last mini scroll week of the year 2024.
- 17:12OK, I love you guys. Bye.
