- 0:00Speaker 1: But light football Friday, we welcome Jeff legwald I. Right now, Leggy,
- 0:03Speaker 1: let's start with the news of the day, and that
- 0:08Speaker 1: is the injury designation of JK. Dobbins not playing on Sunday.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Do we know the severity of the injury and should
- 0:16Speaker 1: we expect an IR designation sometime this weekend?
- 0:21Speaker 2: You know with the bye week game, it's it's you know,
- 0:24Speaker 2: if they want to get a four week start on it.
- 0:27Speaker 2: I mean, he's gonna miss multiple games. I think you know,
- 0:32Speaker 2: all of us out there have known this. They don't
- 0:35Speaker 2: want to talk about it. It's just a serious enough injury.
- 0:40Speaker 2: I've heard a variety of descriptions of it, but it's
- 0:46Speaker 2: certainly something that will keep him out of multiple games.
- 0:49Speaker 2: And I think the only question is, you know, does
- 0:52Speaker 2: it give them any benefit evolved to do it during
- 0:56Speaker 2: the bye week or since it's four four games? You know,
- 1:00Speaker 2: do you do? You just do it when you get
- 1:02Speaker 2: back or or see how he does uh in the
- 1:05Speaker 2: next couple of weeks. But it's it's serious enough that
- 1:09Speaker 2: they have not done anything so far, and they've kept
- 1:13Speaker 2: trying to get information. And I think some of this
- 1:16Speaker 2: is from Dobbin's side too. That they want to get
- 1:20Speaker 2: all the information they can before they they make a decision.
- 1:23Speaker 1: What do we know about the injury or illness situation
- 1:27Speaker 1: regarding Gwyn Minors.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, it's obviously some kind of fatigue inducing
- 1:37Speaker 2: ailment and it's you know, it's it's lingered for about
- 1:41Speaker 2: six weeks, he says. So, uh, you know, it's obvious.
- 1:45Speaker 2: You know, he's he practiced this week. I've seen him
- 1:48Speaker 2: in the locker room every day. He's going about his
- 1:51Speaker 2: usual schedule. So I'm I think they're just trying to
- 1:56Speaker 2: give him enough tests and figure out what's what's happening.
- 2:00Speaker 2: I think they've tried to figure out a regiment of
- 2:03Speaker 2: fluids and hydration and all the rest of it because
- 2:07Speaker 2: that seemed to help him during the game when he
- 2:11Speaker 2: had a sort of a bout with it. But he
- 2:15Speaker 2: doesn't really want to expand on it because I think
- 2:18Speaker 2: he doesn't really have all the answers yet that he'd
- 2:21Speaker 2: like to have. But I mean, I don't want to
- 2:23Speaker 2: speak for him, but he's basically taking the stance of
- 2:27Speaker 2: you know, I've said what I'm going to say about it,
- 2:30Speaker 2: which is it's a fatigue issue and that it's lingered
- 2:33Speaker 2: for a while here, but it's not impacting his yet
- 2:38Speaker 2: so far. Anyway, his attendance at practice or meetings or
- 2:42Speaker 2: whatever else is going on.
- 2:45Speaker 3: Death is all wild. All we've done is talk about health,
- 2:47Speaker 3: and you and Native talked about it's almost impossible, by
- 2:49Speaker 3: the numbers of sheer percentages for them to stay this healthy.
- 2:52Speaker 3: And it feels like they're getting hit with a lot
- 2:53Speaker 3: of weird things at the same time. But I'll ask you,
- 2:56Speaker 3: you've been in the locker room all week, you know,
- 2:58Speaker 3: I like to get the temperature check from you. You're
- 3:00Speaker 3: a little walking thermometer. How bad they need this game?
- 3:06Speaker 2: I think mentally, you know, you think you're having a
- 3:10Speaker 2: really good season, and you think you're a mentally tough
- 3:14Speaker 2: team that's been tested late in games and done comebacks,
- 3:17Speaker 2: and uh, you know, they are the fourth quarter Kings
- 3:20Speaker 2: of the NFL right now, So you I think, if
- 3:23Speaker 2: you're them, you would like to think that all counts
- 3:26Speaker 2: for something. But you know, and and players, you know,
- 3:31Speaker 2: even Sean Payton said it this week. At some point,
- 3:35Speaker 2: if you're going to say you are a factor in
- 3:37Speaker 2: this division, you have to beat the Chiefs and you
- 3:41Speaker 2: have to beat Mahomes and the factorymains is they've only
- 3:45Speaker 2: beaten Mahomes a game the Chiefs in the game Mahomes
- 3:48Speaker 2: has started one time, you know, so far, so that's
- 3:54Speaker 2: not a lot of data. But they'd like to think
- 3:57Speaker 2: this team is built for these kinds of games, and
- 4:01Speaker 2: you know, kind of this stretch run here, this is
- 4:05Speaker 2: the first real test. You know, are you going to
- 4:07Speaker 2: be among the best records in the AFC when you
- 4:11Speaker 2: get to December? You know that type of thing. And
- 4:13Speaker 2: I think they think they're ready. But you know again
- 4:16Speaker 2: when you when you play a team that's done what
- 4:19Speaker 2: the Chiefs have done, and even you know the Peyton
- 4:23Speaker 2: Manning Broncos, when you play that kind of team, they
- 4:27Speaker 2: already have the answer you're looking for. And sometimes that's
- 4:32Speaker 2: the difference.
- 4:33Speaker 3: All right, Well, Jordan Humphrey, what's the role do you
- 4:35Speaker 3: think there? You know, I guess when the move is
- 4:38Speaker 3: initially made, Jeff and we saw Sherfield at a tow injury,
- 4:41Speaker 3: I think Nate and I both thought, ah, well, maybe
- 4:43Speaker 3: he's going to come in and play the role of Sherfield.
- 4:45Speaker 3: But Sherfield looks good to go according to the injury report.
- 4:47Speaker 3: Why the need to get little Jordan Back.
- 4:51Speaker 2: I think just they want more physicality. I think it
- 4:54Speaker 2: gives them a player they can line up. He's a
- 4:59Speaker 2: wide receiver, but he is a player they can line
- 5:02Speaker 2: up with the responsibilities when they put the tight end
- 5:07Speaker 2: a little wider in the slot, maybe out wide, some
- 5:10Speaker 2: of the stuff they've done with Nate Atkins in the past.
- 5:14Speaker 2: And you know, before he signed elsewhere, they had discussed
- 5:18Speaker 2: briefly here about making him a tight end. So I
- 5:22Speaker 2: think he is going to get sherfield snaps or it
- 5:26Speaker 2: will surprise me greatly after seeing practice this week that
- 5:30Speaker 2: if he doesn't get surfield snaps and then be in
- 5:35Speaker 2: the formation where that lined up in line, you know,
- 5:40Speaker 2: like a blocker or something, but be in the formation
- 5:43Speaker 2: where we have seen tight ends previously this season. I
- 5:48Speaker 2: think they want that hybrid physicality with the threat of
- 5:52Speaker 2: catching the ball because I think they feel like they're
- 5:56Speaker 2: tipping plays a little bit with some of their personnel groupings.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Ah. Good to note right there. That's from Jeff Legwald.
- 6:02Speaker 1: Good note, good Legwalald nugget right there on the Roos Show. Yeah,
- 6:06Speaker 1: let's let's keep a close eye on that here this week.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Jeff Legwald, as always is brought to you by the
- 6:13Speaker 1: International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers IBEW Local sixty eight. Start
- 6:18Speaker 1: with the job, end with a career, Jeff, you had
- 6:21Speaker 1: a note today on ESPN dot com difference between wins
- 6:26Speaker 1: and losses. Five wins, Mahomes has been hit on average
- 6:29Speaker 1: five point eight times, four losses. He has been hit
- 6:32Speaker 1: by average nine point three times. That certainly would shout
- 6:37Speaker 1: that that is playing into Denver's hands. With the best
- 6:40Speaker 1: pass rush in the entire NFL I have gone so
- 6:42Speaker 1: far this week is to say if lebron Because are
- 6:44Speaker 1: gonna win this game, it's because the defense is going
- 6:46Speaker 1: to single handedly go out and get it done. But
- 6:51Speaker 1: when you see a note like that and you see
- 6:52Speaker 1: the way that Mahomes played against Buffalo, I mean, it
- 6:56Speaker 1: really does scream to you this is a game that
- 6:59Speaker 1: Denver's gonna have to win in their front seven.
- 7:02Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it has to be. And is that
- 7:05Speaker 2: more difficult without certain and Singleton, Yes, it's much more difficult.
- 7:11Speaker 2: But I think Buffalo showed you don't necessarily have to
- 7:16Speaker 2: sack him. You have to put pressure on him. You've
- 7:19Speaker 2: got to be physical and hit him and you cannot
- 7:23Speaker 2: let him escape vertically and you know, he's the leading
- 7:28Speaker 2: I think he's number two in the league right now
- 7:31Speaker 2: in passing yardage when he's on the move and rushing
- 7:35Speaker 2: yardage on scrambles put together, and you just have to
- 7:41Speaker 2: limit that, you know, the second act, as defensive coaches
- 7:45Speaker 2: call it, and they they have to do what they've
- 7:48Speaker 2: done such a good job with this year, the best
- 7:51Speaker 2: I've seen in a long time. And they rush with responsibility.
- 7:58Speaker 2: You know, they're very aggressive, they're click off the ball,
- 8:01Speaker 2: but they have not let quarterbacks escape this year. And
- 8:05Speaker 2: Sunday that has to be a big deal. When the
- 8:08Speaker 2: day is done, they have to have hits on the
- 8:10Speaker 2: homes and his scramble yardage has to be minimal.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Yeah, keep him in the pocket. The games they played
- 8:17Speaker 1: without certain so far, Davis mostly Davis Mills and Gino Smith,
- 8:24Speaker 1: now Mahomes with you know, with Worthy, with Rashid Rice
- 8:27Speaker 1: back and done with his suspension, Hollywood Brown and Juju
- 8:30Speaker 1: and all. Look, there's good veterans that are that are
- 8:32Speaker 1: receivers on this Kansas City team. But but how is
- 8:37Speaker 1: is the matchup without certain How is it different this
- 8:41Speaker 1: go around going up against I don't know, the best
- 8:44Speaker 1: football player of his generation in Patrick Mahomes.
- 8:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I think some of it is, uh, you got
- 8:52Speaker 2: to keep Rice. I think out of the big plays known,
- 8:56Speaker 2: you know, he is the you know, the lid lifter.
- 8:59Speaker 2: You know, he's the guy that's going to be pushing
- 9:01Speaker 2: your safeties out of the help places they can be
- 9:07Speaker 2: because of his speed. So they've got I think you
- 9:11Speaker 2: start there. You know, Kelsey's always Kelsey, and he's always
- 9:15Speaker 2: gonna find the soft spot in your zone and all
- 9:18Speaker 2: those things. But I think Rice is the one that
- 9:21Speaker 2: can do the serious damage or he makes you make
- 9:27Speaker 2: a move in coverage that allows serious damage to get
- 9:31Speaker 2: done elsewhere. And I think that's the one they've really
- 9:35Speaker 2: got to to maintain. And you know, the difference with
- 9:39Speaker 2: Mahomes and the great quarterbacks is, you know, defensively, you're
- 9:43Speaker 2: gonna make a handful of mistakes every game and most
- 9:48Speaker 2: times you get to say, oh man, we screwed up,
- 9:52Speaker 2: and you know the quarterback doesn't find it. Mahomes punishes
- 9:56Speaker 2: you every time you make a mistake. And that's that's
- 9:59Speaker 2: the big deal with Cirtan out of the lineup, they
- 10:01Speaker 2: got a lot of young guys who cannot make technical
- 10:06Speaker 2: you know, passing guys off from one zone to the other,
- 10:10Speaker 2: or losing players in the bunch in man coverage that
- 10:15Speaker 2: you just can't make a mistake. There's no room for
- 10:18Speaker 2: air because if you make three mistakes, he'll punish you
- 10:22Speaker 2: for two of them. And it won't be, you know,
- 10:24Speaker 2: punish you for a twelve yard crosser. It will be
- 10:28Speaker 2: punish you for the score.
- 10:30Speaker 1: Jeff, this is a little bit of a weird either
- 10:32Speaker 1: or a question, because I feel like the answer is
- 10:35Speaker 1: yes to both of them. But what should concern the
- 10:37Speaker 1: Broncos more Andy Reid with a full bye week going
- 10:41Speaker 1: into this one and we know the record there, or
- 10:44Speaker 1: Steve Spagnolo in a must win game against a Denver
- 10:48Speaker 1: defense that or excuse me, a Denver offense and particularly
- 10:51Speaker 1: a Denver passing game that's been stuck in neutral.
- 10:55Speaker 2: Well, I'm you know, I think the defense has earned
- 10:59Speaker 2: the hours they're getting, and so I'd go with if
- 11:03Speaker 2: there is a game this year where the Broncos could
- 11:08Speaker 2: really use the offense to sort of pull the wagon
- 11:11Speaker 2: a little bit, it's this one. Don't give them a
- 11:15Speaker 2: short field, don't mess up on special teams, you know,
- 11:18Speaker 2: don't fumble the ball deep in your own territory. This
- 11:22Speaker 2: is the game where I think the defense deserves to
- 11:26Speaker 2: not get sent out there because you've had nine to
- 11:29Speaker 2: three and outs. So I would say, you know, handling,
- 11:35Speaker 2: the aggressiveness and the unpredictability of Spagnola is a big deal.
- 11:41Speaker 3: All right, And how do you run the football? You
- 11:42Speaker 3: and I both know I'm gonna ask you. You know,
- 11:45Speaker 3: you you influenced me. They got to run the ball?
- 11:47Speaker 3: Is he gonna trust Harvey to run the ball?
- 11:50Speaker 2: Well, you know, we don't know. He says yes, but
- 11:54Speaker 2: he has said yes to a lot of things about
- 11:56Speaker 2: the Sean Payton, I mean, has said yes to a
- 11:59Speaker 2: lot of things about the run game this year, and
- 12:02Speaker 2: we don't always see it on game day. So, uh,
- 12:06Speaker 2: they did lose the security blanket. I mean, who's been
- 12:10Speaker 2: in when they really need a drive to kill the clock,
- 12:14Speaker 2: or they really need to move the ball, or they
- 12:17Speaker 2: really need their back way up. It's been JK. Dobbins.
- 12:20Speaker 2: You know who's the third down, the high stress back,
- 12:24Speaker 2: you know in the protection scheme, it's JK. Dobbins. So
- 12:28Speaker 2: it you know, it really is going to test their
- 12:31Speaker 2: level of comfort with you know, with R. J. Harvey,
- 12:36Speaker 2: And then you know, they're finally going to have to
- 12:38Speaker 2: put Julia McLoughlin back on the field, and I think,
- 12:42Speaker 2: you know, my personal opinion is they you know, they
- 12:45Speaker 2: should have looked at him as sort of a little
- 12:48Speaker 2: change of pace before this, but you know, and that
- 12:51Speaker 2: may be a little bit of a boost there too,
- 12:55Speaker 2: But Harvey is going to need to have his best
- 12:58Speaker 2: day as a pro so far, and we'll need more
- 13:02Speaker 2: of those best days as they move forward here.
- 13:05Speaker 1: Jeff Lake, Well to ESPN, Jeff, last thing I want
- 13:08Speaker 1: to ask you about is you know you're You're a living, breathing,
- 13:13Speaker 1: warm blooded human. You're aware of what the narratives are
- 13:16Speaker 1: that are out there, what some of your colleagues are writing,
- 13:19Speaker 1: what some of the coverage is about the Denver Broncos.
- 13:22Speaker 1: On a week like this, and when the offense has
- 13:25Speaker 1: been as futrid as it has been of late, it
- 13:27Speaker 1: becomes blame game, it becomes finger pointing, and everyone's got
- 13:31Speaker 1: to take a camp and it's Sean Payton's fault, it's
- 13:33Speaker 1: Bo Nick's fault. I would say it's pretty much on
- 13:37Speaker 1: all parties involved right now. That said, as you have
- 13:40Speaker 1: had a week to break this down, to look at
- 13:42Speaker 1: the tape to talk to people down at the facility
- 13:45Speaker 1: like it, give us, give us one thing each of
- 13:47Speaker 1: them has to do better this week against Bags in
- 13:50Speaker 1: Kansas City. Give me one thing Sean has to do better,
- 13:53Speaker 1: one thing bo Nicks has to do better.
- 13:57Speaker 2: I would say Sean has to be less you know,
- 14:03Speaker 2: enamored with the idea of getting so many answers early.
- 14:08Speaker 2: He loves to get all the personnel groupings on the
- 14:10Speaker 2: field because he wants to see how the defense is
- 14:14Speaker 2: going to respond to each of those so he can
- 14:17Speaker 2: use that information later in the game. So he is
- 14:20Speaker 2: not only trying to move the ball early, but he
- 14:23Speaker 2: is gathering facts like in the third quarter when I
- 14:27Speaker 2: need this, I want to know how they're going to respond.
- 14:30Speaker 2: I think he needs to be less inclined with that
- 14:33Speaker 2: and give bow Nicks the fifteen plays he is absolutely
- 14:38Speaker 2: most comfortable with, instead of the ones where Sean believes
- 14:42Speaker 2: they can get the most information. That's what I would
- 14:45Speaker 2: say there. And bow has to have just cleaner footwork.
- 14:51Speaker 2: You know, just play with cleaner footwork, you'll be more accurate.
- 14:57Speaker 2: You know, things will happen the way you want to
- 14:59Speaker 2: happen and want them to happen. And right now his
- 15:03Speaker 2: footwork is Le's getting him in trouble and you know,
- 15:08Speaker 2: have good footwork. Get the ball out of your hand.
- 15:11Speaker 2: I mean, nothing's happened good late in the down and
- 15:14Speaker 2: if you're gonna run, just do it, you know. I
- 15:16Speaker 2: think there's just indecisiveness and poor footwork in.
- 15:19Speaker 1: His play right now, All right, Sean Chill on the
- 15:22Speaker 1: play calling, Bo clean up that footwork and the Broncos
- 15:25Speaker 1: have a chance to win this game. On Sunday, Jeff
- 15:28Speaker 1: Legwald will be covering all of it for ESPN, and
- 15:30Speaker 1: he'll be talking to us again on Monday afternoon for
- 15:33Speaker 1: the post mortem. Jefflegwaldespn dot com Read his latest right there, Leggy,
- 15:39Speaker 1: excellent work as always, man, Thank you, Thanks, Poles Say
