- 0:00Speaker 1: Here we go a few more minutes to Dan Hurley.
- 0:04Speaker 1: Our first few comments basketball coaches show a quick thing
- 0:07Speaker 1: on staff. You bring Mike Nardi in from Villanova, which
- 0:13Speaker 1: I don't know. That's that's a rival right there. I
- 0:15Speaker 1: had to think he was good, I know. Plus he's
- 0:18Speaker 1: a Jersey guy. Jersey guy, that's another thing.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Plus he's a really good basketball player.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 0:24Speaker 1: So a lot of things go into that when you
- 0:25Speaker 1: add people to your staff, doesn't it.
- 0:27Speaker 3: I mean, Lynden, New Jersey is not Jersey City, but
- 0:30Speaker 3: his like his upbringing and like it was like pretty
- 0:34Speaker 3: similar to me and my brother in a way. So
- 0:35Speaker 3: I could relate to Mike. And Mike shares a passion
- 0:40Speaker 3: for the game. He loves loves loves the game, and
- 0:44Speaker 3: he and he just loves the team, you know. Like
- 0:46Speaker 3: so like he's a basketball junkie and he just he
- 0:50Speaker 3: is a team guy. Like he just he loves the team.
- 0:53Speaker 3: He's just a he's a you know, he's a great addition.
- 0:57Speaker 1: Yeah, he's gonna be good there, no question. You have
- 1:00Speaker 1: a new book out. Ian O'Connor one of my favorite
- 1:03Speaker 1: writers going back to New York days with the Daily
- 1:06Speaker 1: News and everywhere else. It is an excellent writer. I
- 1:10Speaker 1: think he's won seven best selling awards or something. So
- 1:14Speaker 1: you get together to write a book. I know he
- 1:17Speaker 1: followed us around quite a bit in the last year
- 1:19Speaker 1: or so. How intrusive was that? Did it get on
- 1:22Speaker 1: your nerves at all? I mean, Ian's a great guy,
- 1:24Speaker 1: but he's behind you all the time, right and stuff
- 1:26Speaker 1: and talking to you. Well, I've notned my whole Life's
- 1:28Speaker 1: he covered my career.
- 1:29Speaker 3: Unfortunately for him, he had the in college and high school,
- 1:33Speaker 3: so he's he's you know, he's somebody I'm very comfortable with,
- 1:36Speaker 3: and I just wanted to you know, for me, it
- 1:40Speaker 3: was I feel like I've got a life life story,
- 1:43Speaker 3: career struggles, family struggles, you know, emotional, you know, mental
- 1:50Speaker 3: health things that were very difficult, very challenging. So I
- 1:55Speaker 3: wanted to share my story that way. And then I
- 1:58Speaker 3: also wanted to share, you know, just how we do
- 2:01Speaker 3: things at Yukon. That's considered old school, but it should
- 2:04Speaker 3: be just how you should go about your business if
- 2:09Speaker 3: you want to be a championship organization.
- 2:10Speaker 2: So you know, that's why I wanted to do the project.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Was it cathartic in any way? Did when you got
- 2:16Speaker 1: it off your chest. Did you feel more relaxed?
- 2:18Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 2:18Speaker 2: I did.
- 2:19Speaker 3: I mean, I think I'm gonna coach better this year
- 2:21Speaker 3: because of it. You know, the gift and the power
- 2:24Speaker 3: of sharing your story and being open about it.
- 2:27Speaker 2: It is. It's very freeing.
- 2:29Speaker 3: I feel like, you know, like how much anxiety I
- 2:33Speaker 3: still feel to this day in season day of a
- 2:36Speaker 3: game after you know, like winning back to back championships
- 2:40Speaker 3: and then being at Mohegan Sun prior to that Rhode
- 2:42Speaker 3: Island game, like in the bathroom throwing up, you know,
- 2:46Speaker 3: because you're so nervous about the game. Most people think
- 2:50Speaker 3: that that just dissipates once you, you know, reach this
- 2:53Speaker 3: level that you always dream of in terms of accomplishment.
- 2:55Speaker 3: But I think it's comforting to a lot of people.
- 3:00Speaker 3: You know that I've read my story and for me,
- 3:02Speaker 3: I think I'm going to coach better this year because
- 3:04Speaker 3: I shared so much about myself that people can identify with.
- 3:08Speaker 1: It's called never stop life leadership, what it takes to
- 3:10Speaker 1: be great. I'm the last guy you talked to before
- 3:14Speaker 1: every game. I even f you're aware of that. How
- 3:16Speaker 1: does that help you?
- 3:17Speaker 2: Well? I do well. What helps me is like you're
- 3:21Speaker 2: not actually the last person I talked if it was
- 3:25Speaker 2: we would not win.
- 3:27Speaker 3: No, oh no, no, not that.
- 3:31Speaker 2: I didn't mean it like that.
- 3:32Speaker 3: I mean like I talked to the players, I talked
- 3:34Speaker 3: to the staff. But you are, I would say, like
- 3:38Speaker 3: the last I don't want to say civilian because that
- 3:41Speaker 3: doesn't sound right, but you are like.
- 3:43Speaker 2: Other than the players, are the coaches.
- 3:44Speaker 3: You're the actual last human being that I talk to
- 3:49Speaker 3: as I'm popping em and ms with the only blue
- 3:53Speaker 3: or red or or green and drink and mushroom coffee.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Okay, by the way, a four game, the championship game
- 4:01Speaker 1: in Houston. I remember going into to talk to you
- 4:03Speaker 1: and you had.
- 4:03Speaker 2: This the board up there and you're writing good.
- 4:06Speaker 1: You weren't ready, and you go, Mike, it's the national
- 4:08Speaker 1: championship game.
- 4:09Speaker 2: What are you doing here?
- 4:11Speaker 1: I'm like, I'm.
- 4:11Speaker 2: Supposed to be here. This is my job, and I
- 4:13Speaker 2: needed three more minutes. And this guy was just he
- 4:16Speaker 2: was a vulture. I mean, this guy was his team's hovering.
- 4:19Speaker 2: I want him to lead so bad. Well, we got
- 4:21Speaker 2: a few words hidden are The result was great. Yeah
- 4:25Speaker 2: we won the game and we got the interview. Yeah
- 4:29Speaker 2: we got the interview.
- 4:31Speaker 1: All right, does that mean we're going off the air, Okay,
- 4:33Speaker 1: we gotta oh, we get ten seconds.
- 4:35Speaker 2: Dan appreciate it. Yes, thank you, Mike. Great being back
- 4:40Speaker 2: and thanks to our live audience.
