Transcript
- 0:40None. One of these things turns it on.
- 0:55What's up everybody? It's your boy Heefy coming into
- 0:59you from the ghost cult. West Coast HQ got a little
- 1:02different view today because I came in for my weekend travels
- 1:07and I hit the city and I saw the brand new Spinal Tap movie.
- 1:13Spinal Tap to the end continues and I wanted to bring you a
- 1:16quick fresh review while I had just seen it.
- 1:19I'm going to be out of the house in a little bit, going to host
- 1:25karaoke like I normally do on a Sunday.
- 1:27If you're in San Francisco, come hang out.
- 1:31My record shells behind me. I'm in the other room, not the
- 1:34usual studio room, but here I is.
- 1:36Hang out. I'm going to do a non spoilery
- 1:40review as much as I can for you all.
- 1:44I think it's a good idea. I want people to be able to go
- 1:47in and see it fresh, whether that is later on on streaming or
- 1:51if you get to catch it in the movies, which I think will be
- 1:53for the next few weeks. Hilariously funny by the way,
- 1:56right off the bat. And we're going to talk all
- 1:58about it. We're going to do the thing.
- 2:03Oops. Hang on one second.
- 2:13So silly. All right, doing the damn thing.
- 2:16Let's bring in the deck that I set up for this.
- 2:20Thanks for being here. Feel free to join in.
- 2:21This is your show, too. Don Rolando is here.
- 2:24I love women. Is here.
- 2:26Yeah, we all. Somebody loves somebody who
- 2:28loves women. Raise is here.
- 2:32Scooter. Scooter, with some seven sons
- 2:35passing by. Just here to jump on and talk
- 2:38really quick and briefly about Final 10/2.
- 2:41I just came from the movie theater and it was great.
- 2:45In a word, to sum it up. But let's talk for a second,
- 2:48just for some housekeeping. Normally I don't go live on a
- 2:51Sunday so I'm just hanging out doing this before my evening
- 2:55stuff and our usual schedule is new music videos every Monday
- 2:59and Wednesday which are our long form features on YouTube.
- 3:02I have my weekly live stream show on Thursday and Wednesday.
- 3:06I'm doing this special live stream for my birthday which I
- 3:08do once a year every year now. So hopefully you will join for
- 3:13that. If you're new here, please like
- 3:14and subscribe. Chances are you're brand new to
- 3:17our channel and I am a small creator.
- 3:20We are small creators, creator owned.
- 3:22We are not corporate backed. We do have a little bit of
- 3:24advertising money, but Andre is here.
- 3:27Nice kiss photo there in the profile picture.
- 3:30Ace freely dark Floki is here. Eggs.
- 3:33Tasha thanks for passing by. And some people are watching
- 3:38here on the tube of you and a few friends.
- 3:41Oh yeah, that's. Yeah.
- 3:42I mean, there's a bit of it still back east in storage.
- 3:46But this is the majority of my stuff now.
- 3:48I got it finally all in one centralized place.
- 3:50I had a flood about 5 weeks ago here that really could have
- 3:55fucked things up royally from you.
- 3:56Had some records on the floor. I had some books on the floor
- 3:59stacked up in a pile. Not great, but hopefully we're
- 4:02doing better now. I got to get a more catalogued
- 4:04and organized a little bit better for a guy with a vinyl
- 4:06podcast. But let's talk.
- 4:09Let's talk about Spinal Tap too. So it just came from movies.
- 4:12It was pretty amazing. Obviously this is the sequel to
- 4:16Spinal Tap. This is Spinal Tap, the
- 4:19mockumentary by Rob Reiner 50 years ago, playing the character
- 4:24of Marty Duberge, who is doing APOV documentary about the
- 4:29biggest metal band in the world's final tap.
- 4:31Obviously a fictional band, but also they can play and sing and
- 4:34you know that the comedy of these characters is played into
- 4:40other things. 1st in show a mighty wind, you know, great.
- 4:47We we don't really have, you know, there are some American
- 4:50comedy legends for movies, but you know, real old school
- 4:54throwback comedy is a rarity honestly and truly in these days
- 4:59day and ages. So we, you know, interestingly
- 5:02enough, just for a really quick little back story, I don't know
- 5:05if most people know about this. Most of the people who made
- 5:09Spinal Tap didn't make any money off of it for a long time.
- 5:15They got a total for many years. The total revenue from the
- 5:19soundtrack was $91.00 and something like $84 for Birch.
- 5:25Like absolutely insane, insane. But they've turned that around.
- 5:30It is one of the most, it is a cult classic.
- 5:32It is one of the most watched things.
- 5:34It was rented like crazy on VHS and later DVD in the 80s and 90s
- 5:41as San Francisco, San Francisco's behind me.
- 5:44So Spinal Tap, you know, was always like a beloved movie And
- 5:47what you know, a lot of popular artists, your Black Sabbath's,
- 5:51your deep purples, your kisses, your Black Sabbath's.
- 5:55They would tell you, I said Black Sabbath twice.
- 5:58They would tell you that that that it hit home for them
- 6:01because a lot of the things that happened to the band mirrored
- 6:05real life. And I think, like, if you love
- 6:07music, especially rock music, you're loyal to the soil, to the
- 6:11grave. And, you know, I think it's
- 6:14pretty funny when life imitates art, but it's also funny when
- 6:17art imitates real life. And, you know, Black Sabbath
- 6:20talked about having a Stonehenge that in their case was too tall
- 6:26and, you know, pretty damn comical, I got to be honest.
- 6:31So yeah, OK, I went. I was hyped for this.
- 6:36I went to see This is Spinal Tap over the summer and it held up.
- 6:40I went to the AMC Metreon in downtown San Francisco near
- 6:43where I live. I can literally 3020 minutes
- 6:46from my house. I go to the movies there a lot
- 6:48if I'm not going to the little indie theaters that I like here
- 6:51in San Francisco that you've seen me post about and talk
- 6:54about and share about. So I went to the Metreon again,
- 6:57This is Spinal Tap was playing. I went away for the weekend to
- 6:59my girlfriends. I took the bus back.
- 7:00I went right to the movies and and sat down and enjoyed the
- 7:04film and right off the bat, you know, they're not trying to top
- 7:09the first one. They're just trying to continue
- 7:11the story, which is the number one thing that I really
- 7:14appreciate. Again, I'm going to try to make
- 7:16this as non spoilery as possible, only sharing stuff
- 7:20that has been out in the public about the film.
- 7:23But you know, just a, a recap once again, we are not a
- 7:29corporate entity. So if you want to drop us a tip,
- 7:32Joey Morquez is here. We also first passed by What's
- 7:36up? What's up for a ghost cultist
- 7:38edit and fudge show? You're talking about Spinal Tap.
- 7:43And once again, if you want to drop us a tip in the tip menu or
- 7:46buy a super thanks or super chat on YouTube, I just shared all
- 7:53the links. You know, one thing that is
- 7:57interesting is the that Rob Reiner came back.
- 8:01Most of the people who are still alive came back to do the movie,
- 8:05which is really amazing. Not just the actual members of
- 8:08Spinal Tap, but you know, the Badgers here.
- 8:12What's up, buddy? I hope your Sunday is good.
- 8:14My football Sunday is terrible, but I just came from CNN Spinal
- 8:17Tap and Spinal Tap 2 and I'm super stoked.
- 8:20So I'm here to talk about it a little.
- 8:21Give me one second. Let me just share the link here
- 8:27in the tick tock for everybody in case you want to know Let's
- 8:33see always a thing to do, got to do all the things, but if you
- 8:44want to drop us a tip, drop us a tip.
- 8:46My birthday's this week. I got a concert to go to this
- 8:49week. I could use some money for
- 8:50merch. Any who so Spinal Tap two man
- 8:54really great and funny, but I like that they basically
- 8:57continued the story from the first movie.
- 8:59Like in the in the new movie, they were last together 15 years
- 9:05ago. They walked off stage at a final
- 9:07show and hadn't spoken since. So they were given the
- 9:12opportunity to do one final show to close the band's career.
- 9:16This is obviously filmed before the Black Sabbath, back to the
- 9:20beginning. There are a lot of parallels to
- 9:22be honest. All Star people joining them, a
- 9:26lot of interest about them, a lot of curiosity about the shape
- 9:30they're in and again done mockumentary style.
- 9:34One of the funniest people in the movie.
- 9:38There were two band managers. 1 is the daughter of they were
- 9:40original manager and then the other is actor Chris Addison and
- 9:47his character is Simon Howler. And so he's like the bad cop to
- 9:52the good cop of the other manager.
- 9:57And you know, you know, super interesting in the in the
- 10:03impending years, some of the other artists that came back,
- 10:07obviously everybody came back that is alive.
- 10:11You know, Viv Caffanetti, who was their original keyboard play
- 10:16in this is keyboard player in this is final type and was an
- 10:18actual composer and and musical artist died earlier this year.
- 10:22So he passed away, but they got back White guy Jeff or whatever
- 10:28his nickname is in the movie, but he's actually been on tour
- 10:31with the band CJ Bandsten, who caught Jeff.
- 10:33Caucasian Jeff is his name. Sorry, Caucasian Jeff.
- 10:35Sorry, white guys and white people everywhere.
- 10:37Not a good week for white people.
- 10:39But Valerie Franco plays Dee Dee Crockett.
- 10:41You know, one of the running gags of Spinal Tap is that their
- 10:44drummers always get killed or die or quit unexpectedly.
- 10:49So Valerie Franco is a a drummer and a podcaster and an art
- 10:54historian actually. And she's really fun and
- 10:56brilliant. She's actually a kick ass
- 10:57drummer. She comes into the film and is
- 10:59like a breath of fresh air against all these old dudes.
- 11:03And there's a lot of comedy, obviously things that are played
- 11:05for laughs, but not cheap laughs, to be honest with you.
- 11:08So I like that there is a return.
- 11:11Here's a picture of them, sort of obviously much older.
- 11:14If you're watching on Twitch, YouTube, Facebook or Instagram,
- 11:19they're interviewed throughout the movie.
- 11:20Rob Reiner is doing interviews with individual members as well
- 11:23as the call band themselves and the fly on the wall.
- 11:27Kind of like every mockumentary you've ever seen.
- 11:29I mean, music documentaries are not a new thing, but really, we
- 11:33are in the prime time of music documentaries where a lot of
- 11:37them have been pretty great from in theater.
- 11:39I have some reviews of some of those coming soon.
- 11:41Maybe I'll do a written review of this is final tab to the end.
- 11:44Continues with some other recent documentaries I've seen.
- 11:48And yeah, Rob Reiner just knocked it out of the park with
- 11:52the film. It's very funny.
- 11:55Obviously they're a lot older. There's a lot of jokes made
- 11:58about their age and whether they can do this or not.
- 12:03And yeah, the chant, I'm not sure what you're getting at, but
- 12:09I'm talking about this is Final Tap 2 for review.
- 12:13I just came from the movies I'm sharing with everybody and you
- 12:17can rewatch later. But yeah, so pretty funny and
- 12:22and great and used for a lot of great effect.
- 12:24Fran Dredgard pops back up in again as their old publicist and
- 12:29she who is not working with them, but they interviewed her
- 12:32anyway and she is fantastic and funny and gorgeous.
- 12:36I know she had like a lot of health problems the last few
- 12:40years, but she is stunning and really hilarious and and great.
- 12:46Let's see, Paul Schaefer pops up.
- 12:47Obviously you've already seen pictures because there's a music
- 12:49video of spinal tapping Elton John doing their famous classics
- 12:53on Stonehenge. Elton John shows up and he looks
- 12:56really surprisingly good. I know he's had some terrible
- 12:59health problems recently that have, you know, caused a lot of
- 13:03people for concern. We're losing a lot of our
- 13:05legends. Obviously we just lost Ozzy and
- 13:07some others. So, you know, we don't want to
- 13:10lose them. But John looked pretty good.
- 13:13His husband showed up. David Furnish.
- 13:14They're both in it. Also.
- 13:17Also they're in it. They have drummer auditions
- 13:20before they settle on Dee Dee, and they get a bunch of of
- 13:28famous drummers to inquire if they can do the audition or not.
- 13:32A few other people came in in person.
- 13:34So that's a really great segment of the movie and and then the
- 13:37whole build up is to this farewell show, which is actually
- 13:40I believe at the Lakeshore Arena in New Orleans, which is where
- 13:45Acid Bath is going to have a headline arena show in about two
- 13:50months with Mastodon and Power Strip and a bunch of other
- 13:54bands. So that's really killer and fun.
- 13:57And you know, the movie is, you know, you catches up on all the
- 14:01characters where they've been the last 15 years, what's
- 14:03happened to them, They come back together.
- 14:05It's very awkward. Kind of reminded me of a little
- 14:08bit of some kind of monster that I've seen and a bunch of other
- 14:11documentaries that have some awkwardness of bands reuniting
- 14:15and and then they get ready to play a show.
- 14:17So they find, if they find a drummer, Caucasian Jeff is back
- 14:22on keyboards and they're trying to figure out sort of what's the
- 14:25path forward to get to the show, but also to fix their bullshit.
- 14:28Which again, if you've ever been in a band, you know, sometimes
- 14:31the bullshit ruins the band and ruins the band, you know,
- 14:35groove, if you will. This is this is what happens
- 14:38sometimes, you know, the flow of the band gets interrupted
- 14:42because, you know, personalities clash.
- 14:46We've seen it over and over. So it's really funny and
- 14:51obviously there's a big arena show that they do, which is, you
- 14:55know, epic and kick ass. And we've here's Elton John from
- 14:59the clip of the music video of them doing Stonehenge and you
- 15:01can kind of make out the Stonehenge behind them.
- 15:05You know, it's obviously funny and ridiculous.
- 15:08There's a little bit if you're obviously a lot of people know
- 15:10these go to 11. They all everybody knows that
- 15:13gag and that that bit. So there's a similar thing to
- 15:16these go to 11 in this movie. I'm not going to spoil it for
- 15:19you, but it's really great, especially if you love guitars
- 15:22and play guitar. You are going to just burst with
- 15:25at the scenes with laughter when the scene happens.
- 15:28So and Rob Reiner continues to play just dry.
- 15:31He's never he knows he's not the star of the thing.
- 15:35He's just the straight man. So he just sets it up and they
- 15:39all fall like dominoes. That's the comedy of this movie.
- 15:43I'm really glad they made this one.
- 15:44They should not make another one.
- 15:45I think 1 is enough. You know, 2 is enough one and
- 15:48the sequel. Is it better than the original?
- 15:51No, but I think it's pretty great and I'm glad they did
- 15:55this. I had a great time watching the
- 15:57film. There's a soundtrack.
- 15:59Be interesting if they tour. They used to tour Gludge Metal
- 16:02Serial is here. You know, they used to tour and
- 16:07and do Spinal Tap concerts and things where they would play the
- 16:10music. So, you know, I always was a fan
- 16:14of that and I thought it was quite fun.
- 16:16And see if they bring it back because we need comedy right
- 16:18now. There was a big movie premiere.
- 16:21So this is from Bleecker St. Films as well as Sony Pictures.
- 16:25So Sony apparently Vivendi had the original rights, which is
- 16:29why again, the band never saw a lot of money from the original.
- 16:31The band or Rob Reiner never saw money and profits from the
- 16:34original film, but now the collaborative, you know, works
- 16:39of all these movie studios and Sony have put this together.
- 16:41They did a big premiere in the UK that where band people came
- 16:45out and actors and actresses from the movie came in and
- 16:49comedians and things. There are some unbelievable
- 16:53cameos in this that I think you will lose your shit in.
- 16:56And there's a couple of obvious ones.
- 16:58So yeah, some they have the VIP screaming hashtags.
- 17:03Final 10-2 if you're a social media person.
- 17:06And yeah, it was pretty fantastic.
- 17:08It was pretty fantastic. I have to say I really enjoyed
- 17:11it. We I needed a good laugh right
- 17:14now in the world, the way the world is, we all need to laugh.
- 17:18So get out there and go see this thing or go watch it when it
- 17:21comes on demand. And that's my early right out of
- 17:25the theater review of Spinal Tap to the end continues.
- 17:29I personally thought it was hilarious.
- 17:31I would definitely give this. I mean, this is Spinal Tap.
- 17:34It's like the 9:50 classic of comedy and especially related to
- 17:38music I believe. My co-owner there, Omar Cordy, a
- 17:42couple of months ago we had a feature, I'll link it in the
- 17:44description of the 20 most metal movies, shows and video games of
- 17:48all time part one. That means he'll be a Part 2.
- 17:52Final Tap was on that list. You should go check that list
- 17:54out in our description and I had a great time.
- 17:58I think I would probably give this about an 8 of 10 for me
- 18:01personally. Really hilarious and really fun.
- 18:06And again, no cheap laughs. Everything was played just so
- 18:10right, which I really appreciate.
- 18:12So that's my review TuneIn tonight, especially to our
- 18:15YouTube and across our socials this week for all our videos.
- 18:20I will probably go live again tomorrow with a busy, busy week
- 18:23of content and things to get out and stuff to talk about with
- 18:26you. Thanks for being here once
- 18:28again. If you enjoyed any part of this
- 18:30and you're new here, give us a like and a subscribe and a
- 18:32follow. It means a lot.
- 18:34It's the least anyone can do is share our stuff and appreciate
- 18:37it. And I am TV at
- 18:39ghostcalledmag.com. Check our website out and I will
- 18:41see you tomorrow. Peace and go to 11.
- 18:46That's what I say. Go these go to 11.
