- 0:23Speaker 4: Our nuclear reactor pumping out one million kilowatts of power.
- 0:28Speaker 5: Power, power, power.
- 0:35Speaker 6: I've always had a thing for Santa Claus.
- 0:39Speaker 7: You're gonna have to provide more.
- 0:42Speaker 8: Cooling in the containment.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Chambers. Do your stint, James.
- 0:54Speaker 9: We've got to do it.
- 0:56Speaker 10: I feel like George Wallace campaigning in Harlem.
- 1:18Speaker 1: What's up?
- 1:18Speaker 11: Welcome to Movie Meltdown. I'm Brian.
- 1:20Speaker 1: I'm Fred.
- 1:21Speaker 6: I'm Lucy.
- 1:21Speaker 1: I'm Alan.
- 1:22Speaker 11: Happy Life Day!
- 1:24Speaker 6: Happy Life Day!
- 1:26Speaker 11: It's the holiday special, and so here we obviously don't
- 1:29Speaker 11: want to pick one. holiday so we'll just go with
- 1:32Speaker 11: the most movie geek oriented version life day everyone's favorite
- 1:37Speaker 11: holiday special mostly lucy.
- 1:43Speaker 6: When you were able to ruin two things that i
- 1:45Speaker 6: held dear to my heart simultaneously star wars and christmas.
- 1:49Speaker 11: Wasn't my fault i blame i can't even blame lucas
- 1:52Speaker 11: really because he even didn't have anything to do with
- 1:54Speaker 11: that it got like shoved off on some network executive
- 1:58Speaker 11: so Let's blame network executives. They're probably guilty of many
- 2:03Speaker 11: of the evils of society now.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Look, I still, Harvey Korman was the bomb in that.
- 2:10Speaker 11: I don't see how anybody can fault his performance.
- 2:14Speaker 6: Or Bea Arthur's.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Oh yeah, Bea Arthur was great.
- 2:18Speaker 11: Art Carney, though, was phony, man.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Yeah, that was not his best work.
- 2:22Speaker 9: Definitely was not.
- 2:23Speaker 12: How did it ruin Christmas as a whole?
- 2:26Speaker 6: Well, just the concept of holiday, really.
- 2:29Speaker 11: Have you seen? Were you there for that one? I
- 2:32Speaker 11: can't remember.
- 2:33Speaker 3: No, but I went back and watched it after.
- 2:35Speaker 6: Because of the ringing endorsement.
- 2:37Speaker 11: I was curious. It does suck the life out of
- 2:39Speaker 11: you a little bit, but I don't know about ruining
- 2:41Speaker 11: the entire holiday season.
- 2:43Speaker 1: I kind of enjoyed it.
- 2:46Speaker 11: You're a sadist.
- 2:46Speaker 1: For what it was.
- 2:47Speaker 12: I was like, this is just such a weird thing.
- 2:49Speaker 12: I was watching a lot of weird movies at that time.
- 2:51Speaker 11: It's a very weird thing.
- 2:52Speaker 1: I would say that, yeah.
- 2:54Speaker 11: The animated part's awesome.
- 2:56Speaker 1: It is kind of delightful just to know that it exists.
- 2:59Speaker 1: To know that it exists, you have to watch it.
- 3:02Speaker 11: Now, I posted that one later. Did you see that
- 3:05Speaker 11: other one I ran across that was like... I'm trying
- 3:08Speaker 11: to think who it was. It was one of those, like,
- 3:09Speaker 11: kind of the Donny and Marie special of the moment.
- 3:12Speaker 11: You know, back when they had their show and they'd
- 3:14Speaker 11: ice skate and disco dance or whatever they'd do that week.
- 3:18Speaker 11: And it was kind of that era. And they were
- 3:20Speaker 11: doing a, like, a Star Wars-themed segment that goes on for, like,
- 3:25Speaker 11: 20 minutes. And it's got, um... I think the voice
- 3:29Speaker 11: of Darth Vader is, what's his name that does Tony
- 3:34Speaker 11: the Tiger?
- 3:35Speaker 6: Oh, Thoreau Ravenscroft?
- 3:37Speaker 3: Yes.
- 3:37Speaker 11: He was the voice of Darth Vader because that's what
- 3:40Speaker 11: they could get.
- 3:41Speaker 13: I guess.
- 3:41Speaker 11: But I'm like, well, I mean, that's a lateral move.
- 3:44Speaker 11: That's amazing. He's equally as awesome as James Earl Jones.
- 3:48Speaker 11: And then what was the other? They had so many
- 3:51Speaker 11: weird people come in. I'll have to see if I
- 3:53Speaker 11: can find it again and repost it because it was like,
- 3:56Speaker 11: It was like last Christmas, maybe, but it was the weirdest.
- 4:02Speaker 11: And possibly what the holiday special should have been, because
- 4:05Speaker 11: it was kind of awesomely put together. Maybe I'll see if.
- 4:09Speaker 9: I can dig it up here.
- 4:10Speaker 6: Did any cats die in that one?
- 4:12Speaker 11: You're jumping ahead.
- 4:13Speaker 6: I am jumping ahead.
- 4:15Speaker 11: We'll get to that later.
- 4:17Speaker 1: What about Jefferson Airplane?
- 4:19Speaker 11: There was no Jefferson, which maybe, again, might have been
- 4:22Speaker 11: a little bit of a boost.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Were they Jefferson Airplane, or is that what turned them
- 4:26Speaker 1: into Jefferson Starship, was doing that?
- 4:30Speaker 11: I thought they were Starship at that point, because if
- 4:33Speaker 11: you watch the special, there's no Grace involved. So it
- 4:36Speaker 11: was post-Grace getting out of there.
- 4:38Speaker 1: There was no Grace involved.
- 4:40Speaker 11: But before she came back.
- 4:41Speaker 6: That's an understatement.
- 4:42Speaker 11: So, yeah, I think it might have been the Jefferson
- 4:45Speaker 11: Starship era, but not Starship era.
- 4:48Speaker 1: This is important. It really is. We need to know that.
- 4:51Speaker 12: How do you just know the voice of Tony the Tiger?
- 4:55Speaker 6: Because he's a fascinating person. He is pretty awesome. He
- 4:59Speaker 6: did stuff for Elvis. He did a lot of Elvis
- 5:04Speaker 6: movie backup singing and a lot of stuff for Disney,
- 5:07Speaker 6: like various Disney rides. He was super prolific, but only
- 5:12Speaker 6: did awesome stuff.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Only did awesome stuff.
- 5:15Speaker 6: And has an awesome name, if that is in fact
- 5:17Speaker 6: what it is. Is that, in fact, what it is?
- 5:20Speaker 11: Okay, I'm looking it up to make sure. And the
- 5:23Speaker 11: sad thing is I was right. It is a Donnie
- 5:25Speaker 11: and Marie sketch off of their show. But the cast
- 5:28Speaker 11: alone is amazing. First of all, it involves Paul Lind.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Yay.
- 5:33Speaker 11: We're already in, like, a whole new territory. Thoreau Ravenscroft, Donnie,
- 5:40Speaker 11: let's see. There's an R2-D2 that comes into play. I'm
- 5:43Speaker 11: trying to think what the rest of the cast was.
- 5:45Speaker 1: Oh, no, wait, I forgot.
- 5:46Speaker 4: Okay.
- 5:47Speaker 11: So the voice of the Force comes in. I guess
- 5:50Speaker 11: he's supposed to be Obi-Wan, if I remember, towards the end,
- 5:53Speaker 11: which is Red Fox.
- 5:56Speaker 2: Ah, great.
- 5:57Speaker 1: He is the Force.
- 5:59Speaker 11: He is the Force, if you ask me.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 6:04Speaker 11: I'm amazed by this.
- 6:06Speaker 4: A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away...
- 6:12Speaker 4: There was an evil force at work to destroy the
- 6:15Speaker 4: values by which decent people lived. Values like patriotism, cleanliness, thrift,
- 6:23Speaker 4: and good dental hygiene. Did the evil force win the battle?
- 6:29Speaker 4: That's for us to know and you to find out.
- 6:36Speaker 5: Princess Leia, our goose is cooked Unless we lift off
- 6:40Speaker 5: of the star Luke.
- 6:42Speaker 14: I know you're right We just gotta take flight Before
- 6:46Speaker 14: they find out where we are God will keep searching.
- 6:50Speaker 8: Up and down Till he finds our hiding place Before
- 6:56Speaker 8: very long They'll know we're gone Got to get lost
- 7:00Speaker 8: in space.
- 7:03Speaker 13: You know, things are changing out here in space. I
- 7:10Speaker 13: come from a distant planet called Sanford. My planet has
- 7:15Speaker 13: its own moon, its own stars, and its own galaxy.
- 7:19Speaker 13: But this year, Sanford has no sun.
- 7:27Speaker 11: Thought you'd get away. Don't you know you'll never escape
- 7:30Speaker 11: from the farce?
- 7:31Speaker 4: That's the force.
- 7:32Speaker 12: I don't buy you grammar at a time like this.
- 7:36Speaker 6: Get your big ape hands off me.
- 7:39Speaker 11: I'll have to post it again on the old Facebook
- 7:43Speaker 11: page so you guys can share because it is on
- 7:45Speaker 11: YouTube right there and it's a nightmare.
- 7:49Speaker 6: Why did we not watch this for today's episode? I
- 7:52Speaker 6: feel like I would not have spent the morning crying inconsolably.
- 7:56Speaker 6: If that had been our choice. Maybe in a different way.
- 7:59Speaker 1: If I remember Donnie and Marie, you probably would have.
- 8:01Speaker 11: We'll have something to look forward to next year. So,
- 8:05Speaker 11: following that tradition, occasionally we will kick things off with
- 8:08Speaker 11: a holiday rant. Does anyone have any specific thing? I mean,
- 8:12Speaker 11: in previous years, it's been usually me complaining about some
- 8:16Speaker 11: holiday special or possibly ruining Lucy's life in some other fashion, but...
- 8:21Speaker 11: If you have any other holiday-related, it doesn't really have
- 8:24Speaker 11: to be a rant. You could have a good memory, too,
- 8:26Speaker 11: if you'd like. Any holiday-related items you wanted to attend to?
- 8:30Speaker 1: I heard somebody say the other day, sort of funny,
- 8:33Speaker 1: one of the guys in government, she said, yeah, so
- 8:37Speaker 1: an 11-month streak of no Jingle Bell Rock was just ending.
- 8:43Speaker 7: Damn it!
- 8:48Speaker 1: I don't know. I'm on the precipice of a couple
- 8:51Speaker 1: of rants, but I think maybe I ought to just
- 8:53Speaker 1: pull back from the edge. So I think I'm going
- 8:58Speaker 1: to pass.
- 9:00Speaker 11: Okay, so with that out of the way, we can
- 9:01Speaker 11: also address other important social issues of the day. I
- 9:06Speaker 11: will at least give credit where credit is due. Did
- 9:08Speaker 11: anybody see the middle this past week?
- 9:12Speaker 6: Can't say we did.
- 9:13Speaker 11: It's one of those I didn't expect to like that show.
- 9:16Speaker 11: It's actually pretty damn funny. I have to give him credit.
- 9:18Speaker 11: It's a random sitcom. But anyway, one of the running
- 9:22Speaker 11: jokes on the Christmas episode this year was the older
- 9:25Speaker 11: son and his friends got into a fight, eventually like
- 9:28Speaker 11: a physical fight, over King Moon Racer. Are you familiar
- 9:33Speaker 11: with the Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer stop-motion animation special of
- 9:38Speaker 11: King Moon Racer? No.
- 9:41Speaker 12: He has his own special?
- 9:42Speaker 11: No, it's Rudolph. You've never seen the Rudolph special.
- 9:45Speaker 6: Yeah, but I don't remember him as a character.
- 9:47Speaker 11: I remember Rudolph.
- 9:47Speaker 6: It's like a huge part of him.
- 9:48Speaker 14: And I remember.
- 9:49Speaker 12: He's the king of the land of.
- 9:50Speaker 13: Oh, yeah.
- 9:51Speaker 11: Yeah, the Island of Misfit Toys.
- 9:52Speaker 13: Oh, okay.
- 9:53Speaker 11: So that was the question is, is he a toy?
- 9:57Speaker 11: Everything else on the list. the island is a toy.
- 10:02Speaker 11: So is he a toy or is he a living creature?
- 10:07Speaker 11: And if so, why is he the only one on
- 10:10Speaker 11: this island and ruling over a whole group of toys?
- 10:13Speaker 12: Didn't he declare himself to be just kind of a benevolent,
- 10:17Speaker 12: caretaker of these toys until they could all find a home.
- 10:21Speaker 12: Maybe he's just a really good guy.
- 10:22Speaker 1: Just moral authority.
- 10:24Speaker 11: Kind of, but then in listening to his little speech
- 10:27Speaker 11: he gives Rudolph and them, he specifically says they can't
- 10:30Speaker 11: stay on the island because living creatures can't hide on
- 10:34Speaker 11: an island. They have to go back into the world.
- 10:37Speaker 11: So either he's not a living creature, he is a toy,
- 10:40Speaker 11: or he makes the rules but he doesn't have to
- 10:42Speaker 11: follow them.
- 10:44Speaker 2: Huh.
- 10:46Speaker 1: You've given me something to think about.
- 10:47Speaker 11: I think it's something for all of us to think about.
- 10:50Speaker 1: There was somebody there who wasn't a misfit. Which character?
- 10:54Speaker 1: I overheard somebody arguing about whether somebody was a misfit
- 10:59Speaker 1: and whether they belonged there, but I can't remember which
- 11:01Speaker 1: character it was.
- 11:01Speaker 4: Was it in the main group?
- 11:02Speaker 12: Was it Cornelius the Miner?
- 11:05Speaker 1: Is he a misfit? Not really.
- 11:07Speaker 12: He's just kind of mining for gold and silver.
- 11:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:11Speaker 11: He's an odd character, I'll give you that.
- 11:13Speaker 12: He just kind of goes along with them. I watched
- 11:15Speaker 12: this last year with Imogen. Do you remember how much
- 11:18Speaker 12: of a dick Santa is?
- 11:20Speaker 11: See, that was going to be one of mine. I'm like,
- 11:22Speaker 11: what exactly are we passing on to children?
- 11:25Speaker 1: It's really terrible in a lot of ways.
- 11:27Speaker 11: I kind of went off on that the other day
- 11:29Speaker 11: because somebody was talking about it and they were complaining
- 11:31Speaker 11: that it was badly written overall. And this was somebody
- 11:34Speaker 11: that was older than I. Usually we get nostalgic of
- 11:37Speaker 11: a certain era. This was somebody even older that had
- 11:39Speaker 11: watched it with their kids and then re-watched it this
- 11:42Speaker 11: year and was just like, I don't remember it being
- 11:44Speaker 11: this bad. And I'm like, I don't know that it
- 11:46Speaker 11: was bad as far as the writing, but why is
- 11:49Speaker 11: Santa such a jackass? And like, not just a little bit,
- 11:53Speaker 11: like the fact that he's like, number one, how dare
- 11:57Speaker 11: you have a child that's different?
- 11:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:59Speaker 11: Number two, hide your identity. And if not, everyone will
- 12:04Speaker 11: mock you and that's okay. And the worst of all
- 12:07Speaker 11: to me is we're going to shun you and treat
- 12:09Speaker 11: you like a freak the entire time in your life.
- 12:12Speaker 11: Except when we need you. When it's convenient for us
- 12:15Speaker 11: to have you. Oh no, we'll welcome you with open arms.
- 12:19Speaker 11: Santa's kind of a jerk.
- 12:20Speaker 12: What sticks out to me is the scene where the
- 12:23Speaker 12: elf choir is singing and their choir leader is really
- 12:27Speaker 12: kind of anxious about impressing Santa. And the whole time
- 12:30Speaker 12: they're singing, he's just like looking back. He's got this
- 12:31Speaker 12: look of fear on his face. And then at the end,
- 12:34Speaker 12: all Santa says.
- 12:35Speaker 4: Is, it needs work.
- 12:36Speaker 1: And then he just leaves and slams the door.
- 12:37Speaker 12: And that's it.
- 12:39Speaker 11: That is a jerk.
- 12:40Speaker 12: They put that together for him as a gift, and
- 12:43Speaker 12: he just.
- 12:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I do remember him being a dick. I don't
- 12:47Speaker 1: have that vivid a memory of it. I haven't seen
- 12:50Speaker 1: it in a while. I mean, he really.
- 12:52Speaker 11: And again, now you can.
- 12:53Speaker 1: But the whole Rudolph thing kind of has that.
- 12:57Speaker 11: I mean, even the story itself, the song and all
- 13:00Speaker 11: of that is based on kind of like We're going
- 13:02Speaker 11: to make fun of you. But when it's working out
- 13:05Speaker 11: for us, when you can help us, well, then it's okay.
- 13:07Speaker 11: Then we love you and we'll sing songs about you.
- 13:09Speaker 11: But only when you get us something. I don't know.
- 13:13Speaker 11: It's not really a good message to send along every year.
- 13:15Speaker 12: I feel like I saw a movie about that earlier
- 13:18Speaker 12: this year, except it was with gay people helping the minors.
- 13:23Speaker 12: It was called Pride. And that's just the parallel I drew.
- 13:26Speaker 11: Well, it kind of was when I've watched it recently, though.
- 13:29Speaker 11: This whole, like, we want you to hide who you are, Rudolph,
- 13:33Speaker 11: that goes on in the whole first part of that.
- 13:34Speaker 11: I'm just like, you can make analogies about that now. Like,
- 13:38Speaker 11: you were born this way, but we don't like it,
- 13:39Speaker 11: so we want you to hide who you are in
- 13:41Speaker 11: your entire existence. And if not, you'll be forced to
- 13:44Speaker 11: leave our society. I'm just like, this is kind of
- 13:47Speaker 11: heavy if you want to think about it too much,
- 13:48Speaker 11: which I usually do.
- 13:49Speaker 12: Yeah, because I think the moral is supposed to be that,
- 13:54Speaker 12: you know, you can realize that different people are just
- 13:57Speaker 12: as good as you. It just comes across... That came
- 14:02Speaker 12: out all weird. But it comes across the other way. Yeah,
- 14:05Speaker 12: or something like that.
- 14:06Speaker 11: I don't know.
- 14:06Speaker 9: I think I.
- 14:07Speaker 11: With all these, like, kids' specials, I'm like, it's no
- 14:10Speaker 11: wonder our kids, like, flip out and go crazy. Because
- 14:14Speaker 11: that seems like that's what should happen on all these specials.
- 14:16Speaker 11: At some point, Rudolph just needs to lose it and
- 14:18Speaker 11: go crazy and start taking people out, like that Mad
- 14:21Speaker 11: TV sketch.
- 14:21Speaker 1: It just really reflects the culture at the time.
- 14:24Speaker 11: Yeah, it does.
- 14:25Speaker 1: Because it was, like, a really crude, bullying....
- 14:30Speaker 11: Disgusting culture but it's the same thing with charlie brown
- 14:33Speaker 11: i'm like at what point is he gonna snap and
- 14:35Speaker 11: start taking out some of those kids because they like
- 14:38Speaker 11: they push him every holiday.
- 14:41Speaker 15: Special they're like how much of a jackass can we
- 14:44Speaker 15: be and let's all focus it on this one guy
- 14:47Speaker 15: like linus is a weirdo they don't really mess with
- 14:49Speaker 15: him they're just like a nice blanket loser but they
- 14:52Speaker 15: focus all their ridicule on charlie brown they're.
- 14:56Speaker 1: Always were kids yeah everybody that was like the person
- 14:59Speaker 1: to pick on and I remember every now and then
- 15:02Speaker 1: like there was a gym teacher who did that and
- 15:05Speaker 1: he would like call this girl in the class like
- 15:08Speaker 1: this made up name and I just thought man when
- 15:12Speaker 1: I grow up if I run into you on the
- 15:14Speaker 1: street there's going to be a problem there's just something
- 15:17Speaker 1: so nasty about a teacher getting into that I don't
- 15:23Speaker 1: know and that's always the.
- 15:27Speaker 11: Sick things with the holiday specials is it ends in
- 15:30Speaker 11: such a happy note. There's no real revenge. There's no
- 15:32Speaker 11: comeuppance for all the people who were horrible to them.
- 15:35Speaker 11: It's just kind of like, oh, I saved the day,
- 15:37Speaker 11: and now I guess everybody will love me, but they'll
- 15:39Speaker 11: probably continue to be horrible people. I don't know.
- 15:43Speaker 1: When your kids are growing up, you remember these movies
- 15:45Speaker 1: that you liked when you were a kid, and you
- 15:47Speaker 1: watch them with your kids, and there's this gulf between
- 15:51Speaker 1: what you remember, and it's like.
- 15:53Speaker 2: Oh, wow.
- 15:55Speaker 1: I had no idea. Well, I mean, for me, I
- 15:58Speaker 1: get that even with recent things because I tried to
- 16:01Speaker 1: make my daughter watch Deadwood with me. And like in
- 16:04Speaker 1: the first episode, I'm like, oh, I don't know if
- 16:06Speaker 1: you want to see. I forgot about the part where
- 16:09Speaker 1: he's trying to push the bullet out of the guy's head.
- 16:13Speaker 1: And she's like really squeamish about it. But it's really
- 16:16Speaker 1: good if you stay with it. Oh, I forgot about
- 16:18Speaker 1: this part, too. Yeah, you're not going to like this.
- 16:22Speaker 6: I'm getting attacked over here.
- 16:25Speaker 1: The puppy might need to go out for a bit.
- 16:28Speaker 11: Joe, control yourself.
- 16:31Speaker 1: I think all podcasts should have like a maniacal puppy
- 16:34Speaker 1: attacking people.
- 16:36Speaker 11: And it's just this undercurrent. Well, I mean, it does
- 16:41Speaker 11: seem like there's an uphill battle for podcasts.
- 16:44Speaker 1: He's in Godzilla mode. Come on, pup.
- 16:50Speaker 11: You go that way.
- 16:52Speaker 1: Robo-maker.
- 16:53Speaker 10: All right, on that note, we will take our break
- 16:56Speaker 10: and be back with this week's... Oh.

- 17:16Speaker 3: so handsome under Christmas trees. So easy to give, so

- 17:32Speaker 11: Hey, guys, look what I've got. Check out these awesome
- 17:35Speaker 11: earbuds I'm using right now. Look at that. That's wood
- 17:39Speaker 11: right there. That's actual wood.
- 17:42Speaker 9: Why would you use wood to make technology?
- 17:44Speaker 11: Because it's like they're steampunk.
- 17:48Speaker 1: Is steampunk really wood?
- 17:50Speaker 11: I thought it was more of a brass thing. Well,
- 17:52Speaker 11: you got to work the wood in to hold the
- 17:53Speaker 11: brass together. These are the fancy high-end steampunk versions with
- 17:57Speaker 11: a mic built in, mind you. But yeah, where would
- 18:01Speaker 11: I get these you wonder? Tweaked audio.

- 21:05Speaker 11: What you want for Christmas, child?
- 21:06Speaker 2: A cat?
- 21:33Speaker 12: What?
- 21:35Speaker 1: I want me this cat I found.
- 21:37Speaker 13: You reckon I can have him? Please.
- 21:41Speaker 1: He's near dead. He needs a home. I don't have
- 21:45Speaker 1: me enough trouble. I got to nurse me a half-dead cat.
- 21:50Speaker 12: I swear, I ain't got to send you a phone, but.
- 21:56Speaker 2: Anyhow, the only.
- 21:56Speaker 5: Animals they allow in this place is rats.
- 22:00Speaker 3: Aw, Mama, he's liable to die.
- 22:03Speaker 1: Please. Couldn't I have him?
- 22:06Speaker 16: Cat's got nine lives. Losing one won't matter much.
- 22:17Speaker 11: Santa Claus.
- 22:20Speaker 14: Goes straight to the ghetto.
- 22:25Speaker 11: Heads up your reindeer.
- 22:27Speaker 14: Goes straight to the ghetto Santa Claus, go straight to
- 22:36Speaker 14: the ghetto. Fill every stocking you find.
- 22:42Speaker 6: The kids are going.
- 22:43Speaker 11: To love you so.
- 22:46Speaker 14: Leave a toy for Johnny. Leave a doll for Mary.
- 22:53Speaker 14: Leave something pretty for Donnie. And don't forget about Gary.
- 22:59Speaker 1: Santa Claus.
- 23:02Speaker 4: Go straight to the ghetto.
- 23:06Speaker 14: Santa Claus.
- 23:09Speaker 5: Go straight to the ghetto Tell.
- 23:12Speaker 14: Him James Brown sent you Go straight to the ghetto
- 23:20Speaker 14: You know that I know what you will see Cause
- 23:24Speaker 14: that was once me.
- 23:28Speaker 11: Alright, so this week's Holiday Sofa Theater Edition. We kind
- 23:35Speaker 11: of threw it out in a different direction. Normally we're
- 23:37Speaker 11: very feature based as far as films. We've worked in
- 23:40Speaker 11: a few made for TV and I'm kind of fine
- 23:43Speaker 11: with that. Again, it's still sort of movie based. I
- 23:46Speaker 11: don't mind the made for TV movies as much as
- 23:49Speaker 11: some other people out there. But this one's even weird
- 23:53Speaker 11: for that because it's part of one of those like
- 23:56Speaker 11: playhouse showcase kind of things where they just do different stuff.
- 24:00Speaker 11: So out of most of it was just because Fred
- 24:04Speaker 11: has discussed this for quite a while now. So do
- 24:06Speaker 11: you want to give your history with this one?
- 24:08Speaker 1: I just remember seeing it when I was a kid.
- 24:10Speaker 1: It was different from other things on TV. And I
- 24:14Speaker 1: just really, it was one of the few things my
- 24:17Speaker 1: brother and I agreed on. We both really liked it.
- 24:20Speaker 1: But weirdly, there's a scene I remember in it that
- 24:24Speaker 1: isn't in it.
- 24:26Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 24:27Speaker 11: Do you think you're just losing it?
- 24:29Speaker 1: It's possible, but there are other things like that that
- 24:33Speaker 1: have happened to me. There was a book my dad read,
- 24:35Speaker 1: and he told me the scene out of it. It
- 24:39Speaker 1: stayed with me, and eventually I got around to reading
- 24:41Speaker 1: the book. Scene, not in there.
- 24:43Speaker 11: He was just messing with you.
- 24:45Speaker 1: Well, he knew the guy who wrote the book. It's
- 24:47Speaker 1: possible he had seen an earlier draft. I don't know.
- 24:50Speaker 11: Maybe you and your brother were hanging out with JT
- 24:53Speaker 11: and you saw like a director's cut somewhere.
- 24:57Speaker 1: I might, yeah.
- 24:58Speaker 11: I think you got invited to the premiere.
- 25:01Speaker 6: So what's the scene you remember?
- 25:02Speaker 1: I remembered him sneaking into a hospital to see somebody.
- 25:09Speaker 1: But he, you know, he was by himself. But there
- 25:12Speaker 1: was a family going in and there was like a
- 25:14Speaker 1: little kid at the end of the family holding hands
- 25:17Speaker 1: with his brother. And he just grabbed the hand of
- 25:19Speaker 1: the kid and snuck in. And we were like, yes!
- 25:23Speaker 1: It was like the perfect crime. And it's not in
- 25:25Speaker 1: the movie. He doesn't visit any.
- 25:28Speaker 11: I was going to say, who would he be going
- 25:29Speaker 11: to visit?
- 25:31Speaker 1: I don't know. I thought it was like... I remember
- 25:34Speaker 1: his grandmother was in it. And I thought there was
- 25:36Speaker 1: some scene where he went to visit somebody. But this
- 25:39Speaker 1: was after, you know, like decades of not seeing it.
- 25:42Speaker 11: Do you think it was another movie? And do we
- 25:45Speaker 11: need to figure out what that movie was?
- 25:46Speaker 6: Yeah, I bet there's somebody at home right now screaming
- 25:48Speaker 6: at their computers.
- 25:50Speaker 1: Well, I did meet the incredible Inman not long ago.
- 25:54Speaker 1: And I tried to grill him on that, but he
- 25:56Speaker 1: doesn't know anything. He doesn't know anything. He did know JT.
- 25:59Speaker 1: He knew that.
- 25:59Speaker 11: That's better than most people.
- 26:01Speaker 1: You know, I asked him the question that has haunted
- 26:04Speaker 1: us for years. A friend of my daughter's remembered this movie.
- 26:08Speaker 11: What is King Moon Racer?
- 26:09Speaker 1: She remembered a movie vividly, and she said, it's a
- 26:14Speaker 1: movie where a guy goes into or through a thing
- 26:18Speaker 1: or something. And then, in a garage, something happens, but
- 26:23Speaker 1: that was before the other thing. And we tried for
- 26:27Speaker 1: years to figure out what this was. We thought it
- 26:29Speaker 1: was Drop Dead Fred, but we described that to her. No,
- 26:33Speaker 1: it's this other thing. Eventually found it, it's Don't Look
- 26:36Speaker 1: Under the Bed. And it is online, on YouTube.
- 26:41Speaker 11: What is the thing they go through or into or around?
- 26:44Speaker 1: They just go through or into a thing or something.
- 26:47Speaker 1: A guy goes through or into a thing or something.
- 26:50Speaker 1: And that was the clue we had. Eventually we did
- 26:53Speaker 1: find it. I'm just proud of that. You don't have
- 26:59Speaker 1: to call me incredible. I'm not that kind of guy.
- 27:02Speaker 11: I think you'd have to bill yourself as that to
- 27:04Speaker 11: be here.
- 27:05Speaker 16: Yeah.
- 27:06Speaker 1: I do have a cape, but I usually don't wear it.
- 27:10Speaker 11: He was wearing it when I got here.
- 27:11Speaker 6: He's actually wearing it right now.
- 27:17Speaker 11: All right, so the official rundown for this one is JT,
- 27:20Speaker 11: the year is 1969. The director is Robert M.
- 27:24Speaker 2: Young.
- 27:26Speaker 11: We'll throw an extra little shout out. The writer is
- 27:29Speaker 11: Jane Wagner, which I'm sure we'll also address later. And
- 27:32Speaker 11: the plot, according to IMDb, is JT Gamble, a shy,
- 27:36Speaker 11: withdrawn Harlem youngster, shows compassion and responsibility when he takes
- 27:40Speaker 11: on the care of an old, one-eyed, badly injured alley
- 27:42Speaker 11: cat days before Christmas and secretly nurses.
- 27:45Speaker 9: It back to health. Spoilers.
- 27:48Speaker 11: Which, actually, there will be one, because the horrible thing
- 27:51Speaker 11: that was already alluded to, I kind of didn't see coming.
- 27:54Speaker 6: I saw it coming from the first time we saw
- 27:56Speaker 6: that cat. And I was like, Fred wouldn't do this
- 27:58Speaker 6: to me. Fred wouldn't do this to me. Fred wouldn't
- 28:00Speaker 6: do this to me. I mean, now Fred did it
- 28:02Speaker 6: to me.
- 28:03Speaker 11: After I saw it, I was like, well, it makes sense.
- 28:05Speaker 11: Every other animal movie about animals with kids, they always
- 28:11Speaker 11: end like that. It always goes horrible.
- 28:13Speaker 6: And also, the plot was going nowhere. Nothing was happening.
- 28:17Speaker 6: Nothing could happen other than the cat dies tragically.
- 28:20Speaker 1: But see, I had remembered that the cat went to
- 28:22Speaker 1: the hospital. And the kid snuck in and visited.
- 28:26Speaker 6: So it's not your fault.
- 28:28Speaker 9: Yeah, not my fault.
- 28:30Speaker 6: I really, the whole time I was thinking, like, he
- 28:32Speaker 6: just wouldn't do that to me. It's too cruel a
- 28:34Speaker 6: thing to do to.
- 28:36Speaker 11: See, this time it's not even my fault, because I
- 28:38Speaker 11: hadn't seen JT. This was my first viewing.
- 28:40Speaker 6: I mean, bawling.
- 28:42Speaker 12: No, I honestly didn't see it coming for some reason.
- 28:44Speaker 12: I just kind of imagined at the end of it
- 28:45Speaker 12: he'd get to take the cat home.
- 28:46Speaker 16: Yeah.
- 28:46Speaker 12: And all would be well somehow.
- 28:48Speaker 6: Everything would be okay.
- 28:49Speaker 11: Kind of my thinking.
- 28:49Speaker 12: It's a pretty benign kind of.
- 28:51Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 28:51Speaker 12: I really liked it, though.
- 28:53Speaker 1: I was really.
- 28:54Speaker 12: The IMDB thinks that he was responsible, but I just...
- 28:57Speaker 12: I was really bothered by how he shut the cat
- 28:59Speaker 12: in the oven with a radio.
- 29:01Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 29:03Speaker 12: I was like, he's not going to just walk away.
- 29:05Speaker 12: And then he did.
- 29:07Speaker 11: It would be fine, except it was really loud, too.
- 29:10Speaker 6: It's like an active cruelty more than anything.
- 29:12Speaker 12: But he keeps locking the cat up in the oven.
- 29:14Speaker 16: Why?
- 29:14Speaker 1: Yeah, but.
- 29:17Speaker 12: And how did the oven door get put up in
- 29:19Speaker 12: the first place?
- 29:21Speaker 11: By the time, because I originally was like, how the
- 29:23Speaker 11: hell did that cat get in there? But I think
- 29:24Speaker 11: if you look at it, that top tray part was gone.
- 29:27Speaker 11: So the burners were there, but there was no tray.
- 29:29Speaker 11: So he could jump out. Because then that's also why
- 29:32Speaker 11: he put the umbrella over there, because snow could fall in.
- 29:35Speaker 11: Because that top plate piece was missing.
- 29:37Speaker 1: I just remember the oven with the umbrella on. on
- 29:40Speaker 1: it being this great image that stayed.
- 29:42Speaker 6: With me and i loved that umbrella yeah.
- 29:45Speaker 1: By the way yeah it was cool and i also
- 29:47Speaker 1: remember him sharing the sandwich with the cat i just
- 29:50Speaker 1: remember as a kid being like wow you can do
- 29:54Speaker 1: that i don't.
- 29:55Speaker 11: Know And my question was, what was that they were eating?
- 30:00Speaker 11: It was some sort of sandwich thing. I know school
- 30:03Speaker 11: lunches are pretty unidentifiable sometimes, but what the hell was
- 30:08Speaker 11: that thing?
- 30:08Speaker 6: Yeah, I just like that he put ketchup on the
- 30:10Speaker 6: fries before he took them to the cat.
- 30:12Speaker 11: I like that as he put them in a plastic bag,
- 30:14Speaker 11: he put ketchup on them.
- 30:16Speaker 1: There are a lot of weird little things like that.
- 30:19Speaker 1: It just made it feel more like life than most
- 30:23Speaker 1: things that you saw on TV.
- 30:25Speaker 9: Definitely.
- 30:26Speaker 6: No, and I think it makes sense, too, that when
- 30:28Speaker 6: I looked and saw that the director was primarily a
- 30:30Speaker 6: documentary filmmaker, it's all of a sudden that whole verite thing.
- 30:34Speaker 6: I loved all the angles, all the cameras, all the setups.
- 30:37Speaker 6: I just thought every sort of shot was just beautifully
- 30:40Speaker 6: crafted in a way that you don't think a television
- 30:42Speaker 6: film would be.
- 30:43Speaker 1: Yeah, you just have the feeling watching it that somebody knows.
- 30:47Speaker 11: What they're doing.
- 30:48Speaker 6: And is taking some time with it.
- 30:49Speaker 11: Yeah, and that guy also really loves Edward James Olmos.
- 30:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 30:53Speaker 11: If you go further into his, as he goes on,
- 30:57Speaker 11: almost every non-documentary project stars Edward James. It's very strange.
- 31:04Speaker 11: I'm like, how weird. Because, yeah, they just, I guess,
- 31:07Speaker 11: became friends and kept working together.
- 31:09Speaker 6: Like how Jane Wagner and Lily Tomlin just weirdly worked together.
- 31:12Speaker 11: For years and years and years. That's a very different story,
- 31:14Speaker 11: I think.
- 31:15Speaker 12: I don't know.
- 31:17Speaker 11: Officially, it wasn't. I mean, I don't know. ask her
- 31:20Speaker 11: that i was just like how was it kind of
- 31:23Speaker 11: working with again i guess to go into our shout
- 31:26Speaker 11: out earlier jane wagner wrote this and what i thought
- 31:30Speaker 11: was interesting looking at her imdb this is pretty much
- 31:32Speaker 11: the only thing she ever did that wasn't related to
- 31:35Speaker 11: lily tomlin yeah Everything else she did after that.
- 31:38Speaker 1: And it kind of made her name. It was the
- 31:39Speaker 1: first thing she did that got her attention.
- 31:41Speaker 11: And then, I guess, at that point, she met Lily. And, like,
- 31:43Speaker 11: ever since then, they've worked together. And she's been producer
- 31:46Speaker 11: and executive producer and writer and, like, involved and actually
- 31:49Speaker 11: directed one of her movies. Like, she's been so involved
- 31:53Speaker 11: in all these different parts of the entertainment industry. But
- 31:56Speaker 11: after that, they always tied to Lily.
- 31:57Speaker 9: So, yeah, she.
- 31:58Speaker 11: Was the friend back in the day of Lily Tomlin.
- 32:02Speaker 11: And they would ride to work. together and like yeah
- 32:07Speaker 11: i think even she's like we didn't say anything but
- 32:11Speaker 11: most people kind of knew you know and because it
- 32:13Speaker 11: was only like i think last year they got married
- 32:16Speaker 11: like so it was a the first time anything official
- 32:19Speaker 11: had been done other than that they've just been together
- 32:22Speaker 11: for years and years and years yeah i was reading.
- 32:24Speaker 6: A people magazine article where people was sort of talking
- 32:26Speaker 6: about how lily tomlin had appeared in people over the
- 32:29Speaker 6: years and she was always cited as her best friend jane.
- 32:31Speaker 11: Wagner Well, yeah, I think they, at one point, were
- 32:34Speaker 11: describing it as her writing partner. It's always a good
- 32:39Speaker 11: professional way to work around it.
- 32:41Speaker 1: It's like frog and toad are friends. You know there's
- 32:45Speaker 1: something more going on there.
- 32:46Speaker 11: Froggy went to Corton's while I was there.
- 32:49Speaker 1: But I think anybody, if you hooked up professionally with
- 32:53Speaker 1: Willie Tolman, you would just cling on for life.
- 32:56Speaker 11: I mean, if you have sense. Not that Jane's not
- 32:59Speaker 11: talented in her own right, but... Regardless, I mean, Lily's
- 33:04Speaker 11: pretty damn impressive.
- 33:05Speaker 12: Yeah, she's awesome.
- 33:06Speaker 11: She is pretty impressive.
- 33:08Speaker 1: I also like when he explained to the cat that
- 33:11Speaker 1: this was the best radio station in New York.
- 33:14Speaker 6: Like he needed to, like the cat didn't know right
- 33:17Speaker 6: off the bat. I was thinking that's like a magical
- 33:20Speaker 6: transistor radio that only plays awesome shit.
- 33:23Speaker 11: Was it awesome? It was so awesome. Because I felt
- 33:26Speaker 11: like it was really generic. And then as I listened
- 33:29Speaker 11: to it, I was like, it's probably really generic so
- 33:32Speaker 11: they don't have to pay anybody for the licensing. Because
- 33:35Speaker 11: these had a pretty minimal budget.
- 33:37Speaker 1: My grandmother had a radio in her kitchen that only
- 33:40Speaker 1: played news that had no effect on anyone and Rocky Top.
- 33:44Speaker 1: that was the one song that would come on.
- 33:49Speaker 11: Well i liked it because this is like and you
- 33:52Speaker 11: get a lot of that in like i guess starting
- 33:54Speaker 11: that far back and then definitely all through the 80s
- 33:57Speaker 11: you get this like stories about kids and they have
- 34:00Speaker 11: pretty much entire lives of their own like you see
- 34:02Speaker 11: him leave the house and then all this other stuff
- 34:05Speaker 11: goes on that his mom has no idea about like
- 34:07Speaker 11: he's he's running from other kids, and gonna, they're gonna
- 34:10Speaker 11: beat him up, or like, he's stealing stuff, or like,
- 34:13Speaker 11: he's hiding in an abandoned building that could possibly fall
- 34:16Speaker 11: on him at any moment, like, there's all these horrible
- 34:19Speaker 11: things from a parental point of view, they're like, oh
- 34:21Speaker 11: my god, this poor kid, but like, it's just a
- 34:23Speaker 11: day for him, like, it's just normal adventures, and I,
- 34:26Speaker 11: I like that, because I do like, you know, kids
- 34:29Speaker 11: kind of do, like, we always just sort of see
- 34:31Speaker 11: this family unit, and all you see, it's like sitcom mode,
- 34:34Speaker 11: all you see is what takes place in the living room,
- 34:36Speaker 11: but I like when everyone goes their separate ways. They really,
- 34:39Speaker 11: especially kids, have this own existence that nobody else really understands.
- 34:43Speaker 12: Yeah, but I felt like I had it. The mom
- 34:45Speaker 12: said a line that kind of defined for me the
- 34:49Speaker 12: entirety of her character.
- 34:51Speaker 1: She said, it's.
- 34:52Speaker 12: Almost as if that boy's been getting worse since his
- 34:55Speaker 12: daddy died.
- 34:56Speaker 1: Or went away.
- 34:57Speaker 6: Wonderful explanation.
- 34:58Speaker 11: He just skipped out.
- 35:00Speaker 12: And the keyword was, it's almost as if. Like, clearly
- 35:03Speaker 12: that's what's going on. But she's clearly not paying attention.
- 35:07Speaker 1: Oh, good catch.
- 35:08Speaker 11: I don't even know that it wasn't paying attention. I think.
- 35:10Speaker 1: I.
- 35:11Speaker 12: Mean, she's paying attention enough to know, but she's just
- 35:13Speaker 12: not connecting the dots.
- 35:15Speaker 11: It was really uncomfortable. I think it's also a pretty
- 35:17Speaker 11: good portrait of that place and time and a single
- 35:21Speaker 11: parent trying to raise this rambunctious kid in the middle
- 35:25Speaker 11: of Harlem where she's also working probably how many hours
- 35:29Speaker 11: a week? She was gone most of the day, so
- 35:32Speaker 11: I'm just like... don't know like to me there's a
- 35:35Speaker 11: lot of that that's just like I don't know sometimes
- 35:37Speaker 11: you don't have time for that stuff in life you're
- 35:40Speaker 11: just like I'm trying to take care of my kid
- 35:41Speaker 11: but at the same time I gotta be at work
- 35:43Speaker 11: 60 hours this week so I'm trying to keep him
- 35:46Speaker 11: through the roof over his head I'm trying to pay
- 35:48Speaker 11: the grocery down the street so it's like I think
- 35:50Speaker 11: it was kind of an interesting little window into that
- 35:53Speaker 11: life too that you're also watching the single mother trying
- 35:56Speaker 11: to raise this kid and the kids you know probably
- 35:59Speaker 11: it was pretty easy when he was younger and he
- 36:00Speaker 11: wasn't running the streets but now he's He, again, has
- 36:04Speaker 11: a life of his own and has become this terror
- 36:07Speaker 11: in her eyes.
- 36:08Speaker 12: Well, but it's like she expects him to just be
- 36:10Speaker 12: totally unaffected by the sudden upheavals in his life and
- 36:14Speaker 12: just her complete disregard of that.
- 36:16Speaker 1: I think that, too. That's probably pretty accurate of the culture.
- 36:20Speaker 11: At the time. Well, again, how old do we think
- 36:24Speaker 11: he was?
- 36:24Speaker 9: Like 11, maybe?
- 36:25Speaker 11: 69.
- 36:26Speaker 1: 69.
- 36:27Speaker 11: Well, I mean, in the story. So, I mean, he
- 36:30Speaker 11: was basically raising himself. Like, you go down to the
- 36:33Speaker 11: bus station and pick up your grandma, and I'm just like,
- 36:35Speaker 11: they probably wouldn't let me off the street at that age,
- 36:38Speaker 11: you know, even a few years later. So, yeah. It's
- 36:43Speaker 11: funny how much each generation kind of gets more and
- 36:45Speaker 11: more protective of their kids. And, like, now we're to
- 36:48Speaker 11: the point of helicopter parents. So, it's like, it goes
- 36:51Speaker 11: too far the other way sometimes. But, I don't know,
- 36:55Speaker 11: it is that period in time, too, where you just
- 36:58Speaker 11: latchkey kids did whatever the hell they wanted, and, like,
- 37:00Speaker 11: nobody really thought about it, period.
- 37:03Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, that's what people did. Kids just ran
- 37:06Speaker 1: the streets and did stuff. And I guess there is,
- 37:10Speaker 1: you know, it's cool to go out and have adventures,
- 37:14Speaker 1: but at the same time, no, I did the helicopter thing.
- 37:20Speaker 11: And yours actually turned out pretty.
- 37:21Speaker 1: I was cool with it, yeah. But, yeah, I'm not
- 37:25Speaker 1: parenting that. One of the things I enjoy about Mad
- 37:29Speaker 1: Men so much is they remind you of that stuff
- 37:32Speaker 1: you just forget. That it wasn't that long ago that
- 37:36Speaker 1: stuff was so... My favorite scene ever in Mad Men
- 37:40Speaker 1: is when they go on a picnic. And at the
- 37:42Speaker 1: end of the picnic, Don throws his beer can into
- 37:47Speaker 1: the woods. And I remember that gesture. I saw that
- 37:51Speaker 1: all the time, just throwing the beer can. Then Betty
- 37:53Speaker 1: gets up and picks up their little... cloth for the
- 37:57Speaker 1: picnic shakes all the trash out on the ground and
- 38:00Speaker 1: they get in the car.
- 38:01Speaker 11: And somewhere an indian whipped.
- 38:05Speaker 1: It's just so true oh man yeah but uh uh
- 38:11Speaker 1: jt for me it still feels the same as when
- 38:14Speaker 1: i first saw it it it holds up i just
- 38:17Speaker 1: i really liked it then and i really like it
- 38:19Speaker 1: now well.
- 38:20Speaker 11: Of those like things that Again, until you see this, you,
- 38:24Speaker 11: I guess, knew that it existed, but you forget. The
- 38:28Speaker 11: fact that how many people in that building shared a bathroom,
- 38:32Speaker 11: I'm like, that's a nightmare. Sharing a bathroom with people
- 38:36Speaker 11: in your own family is one thing, but everybody on
- 38:39Speaker 11: that floor probably had to share that bathroom, and he
- 38:42Speaker 11: gets hassled by that cranky old lady down the hall.
- 38:45Speaker 1: Oh, she was great.
- 38:48Speaker 11: That's too much to think about, especially for a little kid.
- 38:51Speaker 1: Or a little... sarcastic rant at him about his radio. Oh,
- 38:55Speaker 1: we've all just been enjoying your.
- 38:57Speaker 17: Oh, and the other thing I really loved was, and
- 39:00Speaker 17: I had forgotten this, the thing about the batteries were
- 39:05Speaker 17: going to transistorize his brain.
- 39:07Speaker 1: I like that.
- 39:08Speaker 11: One day your brain's going to turn into a battery
- 39:11Speaker 11: or something. Every time she passed him, she gave him
- 39:13Speaker 11: one of those lines.
- 39:15Speaker 6: I just like that that actress was apparently, she's like
- 39:17Speaker 6: the Harry Dean Stanton of black women. She was never... Young.
- 39:22Speaker 11: She was always an old lady. And always played that
- 39:25Speaker 11: sassy old black lady that had some sort of hassling
- 39:28Speaker 11: for whoever our main character was. there were a good
- 39:32Speaker 11: handful of those women that just kind of they turned
- 39:34Speaker 11: up on well i feel.
- 39:35Speaker 6: Like 20 years before 227 i.
- 39:38Speaker 11: Feel like the mom was kind of that like she
- 39:40Speaker 11: played the most mom mom you're ever gonna get not
- 39:43Speaker 11: like his mom but her the grandma that's my mama
- 39:46Speaker 11: grandma she yeah i'm like she's that's my mama for
- 39:48Speaker 11: whatever you want to cast her in like she would
- 39:50Speaker 11: be that woman in probably every role like and she
- 39:53Speaker 11: was kind of amazing at it like i'm like i
- 39:56Speaker 11: want her to be my grandma yeah can i get
- 39:59Speaker 11: some wisdom before bed like that's i'll go pick her
- 40:02Speaker 11: up at the bus station i got i'll get a
- 40:04Speaker 11: car i'll ride her home she'll have to walk and
- 40:07Speaker 11: deal with Whatever the rude people on the street, she
- 40:10Speaker 11: was kind of going off there for a minute.
- 40:13Speaker 1: I wanted to hear the end of the story about
- 40:15Speaker 1: the coffee. Because she's like, oh yeah, the coffee came out,
- 40:18Speaker 1: but no cup. But I got my quarter back, and
- 40:22Speaker 1: I'm like, okay, here's an idea.
- 40:25Speaker 6: Use that to put more.
- 40:26Speaker 1: You put the cup, put your quarter back in.
- 40:28Speaker 9: I just, come on.
- 40:30Speaker 11: Worst case scenario, you get two cups. Then you don't
- 40:32Speaker 11: burn your hand. Although I think technically.
- 40:35Speaker 6: It was grape soda. So way to reinforce stereotypes, JT.
- 40:41Speaker 6: Because you were trying to take away the racial stereotype.
- 40:44Speaker 1: Yeah, maybe. Or it didn't even register to me.
- 40:47Speaker 6: Yeah, you don't see racial stereotypes anymore.
- 40:50Speaker 11: Or I don't think I've ever seen one of those
- 40:53Speaker 11: that wasn't a coffee. Like, again, they'd all probably broken
- 40:56Speaker 11: by the time. Because I do remember the coffee ones
- 40:58Speaker 11: dropping down with the cup, but I really don't remember
- 41:01Speaker 11: a soda one. I think I've seen, like, them, again,
- 41:04Speaker 11: in movies and stuff. But in the real world, I
- 41:07Speaker 11: think the only one I've seen where it drops the
- 41:08Speaker 11: cup down were coffee ones.
- 41:10Speaker 16: Yeah.
- 41:10Speaker 1: I guess based on my experience, that's what I'm thinking.
- 41:14Speaker 9: Fair enough.
- 41:14Speaker 11: And you might just want some coffee right now.
- 41:16Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, it all... The way that it's put together,
- 41:22Speaker 1: I don't have anything to compare it to, but I
- 41:25Speaker 1: remember at some point I read the opening couple of
- 41:29Speaker 1: paragraphs of Alice in Wonderland, and it was when my
- 41:34Speaker 1: kids were little, and so I saw a couple of versions,
- 41:37Speaker 1: movie versions of Alice in Wonderland, and it just takes
- 41:41Speaker 1: the movies forever to establish the things that are just
- 41:46Speaker 1: thrown out in the first paragraph. And it's just so effortless,
- 41:50Speaker 1: you aren't even aware there's any exposition. But then you
- 41:54Speaker 1: see a movie treatment trying to get it all in,
- 41:59Speaker 1: and it's just so ponderous and lumbering. There's a real
- 42:04Speaker 1: talent for editing things so that they just happen naturally,
- 42:09Speaker 1: and they lead you into the story without you going, yeah,
- 42:14Speaker 1: what's the deal? Oh, I guess they're going to answer that.
- 42:17Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 42:18Speaker 11: I mean, that is a skill to be able to
- 42:21Speaker 11: take that and not only make it make sense on screen,
- 42:24Speaker 11: but make it make sense in a succinct manner that
- 42:27Speaker 11: you're not like making one of the three hour movies
- 42:30Speaker 11: that you're like, well, why is this so damn long?
- 42:31Speaker 11: Which I do remember thinking that at the end, I
- 42:33Speaker 11: was like, it feels like we got a lot of
- 42:36Speaker 11: this slice of life for like under an hour. Like it,
- 42:40Speaker 11: it seems like there's a whole lot of stuff going
- 42:41Speaker 11: on in his life. And then all the time we
- 42:43Speaker 11: spend with the cat and like, Somehow it packs it
- 42:46Speaker 11: all into this pretty short amount of time for, I
- 42:49Speaker 11: don't know, it feels like it's more than a complete
- 42:52Speaker 11: picture than you would get even out of some movies
- 42:55Speaker 11: that sort of piece together these bad relationships.
- 42:58Speaker 1: I guess that's what I was trying to say about it.
- 43:00Speaker 1: It does a lot really fast.
- 43:02Speaker 16: Would you like to have a midnight snack with me?
- 43:06Speaker 16: I made some boiled custard.
- 43:12Speaker 11: I know how bad you're hurting, honey.
- 43:15Speaker 16: That cat? He was something real special to you.
- 43:20Speaker 12: I know.
- 43:22Speaker 2: You. You're something special, too.
- 43:26Speaker 11: You are.
- 43:28Speaker 2: Why did it have to happen?
- 43:30Speaker 13: Why?
- 43:31Speaker 2: Why?
- 43:31Speaker 16: Oh, child, I wish I could give you the answer.
- 43:35Speaker 16: But I don't know. Seemed like life got a whole
- 43:40Speaker 16: lot more questions than answers to it. You start out
- 43:43Speaker 16: young asking questions. You end up old asking questions. And
- 43:48Speaker 16: the puzzlement is, they're mostly the same questions. There's just
- 43:54Speaker 16: a very few years in between where you think you
- 43:58Speaker 16: got the answers to match up with the questions.
- 44:02Speaker 2: Why did it have to happen? Why?
- 44:07Speaker 16: Death is a mean way to have to learn about life.
- 44:11Speaker 16: But that's the way of it sometimes. That's just the
- 44:15Speaker 16: way of it.
- 44:16Speaker 6: Sure made me love that cat.
- 44:19Speaker 1: Yeah, that was. It was a great cat, too. That
- 44:22Speaker 1: cat should have been like the Harry Dean statue of
- 44:25Speaker 1: cats in movies.
- 44:26Speaker 6: Maybe it was that we didn't recognize the cat because
- 44:28Speaker 6: it was so effective.
- 44:29Speaker 1: In its other roles. He disappears into the role. He
- 44:33Speaker 1: also played the other cat, the kitten.
- 44:35Speaker 11: He is that good.
- 44:37Speaker 1: You didn't even.
- 44:40Speaker 11: Recognize him. Again, because maybe it was just a time
- 44:43Speaker 11: period and they were grab whatever cat but it seems
- 44:46Speaker 11: like now it would be super cute the whole way
- 44:48Speaker 11: through and i'm like he looks rough when he first
- 44:50Speaker 11: gets there i was like damn he does look like
- 44:53Speaker 11: a cat living in an abandoned building like he looked
- 44:55Speaker 11: like he needed somebody to love and i was like
- 44:57Speaker 11: damn it jt stepped up.
- 44:59Speaker 6: They knew he was going to die. I just assumed
- 45:01Speaker 6: the whole time that they were going to knock down
- 45:03Speaker 6: the building. Like, that was one of the buildings that
- 45:05Speaker 6: they were going to take down, and they were taking
- 45:06Speaker 6: down the building over the cat. And then we'd just see, like,
- 45:08Speaker 6: a cat.
- 45:08Speaker 11: Tail coming out of a rubble. When they set up
- 45:10Speaker 11: the windows thing, yeah.
- 45:11Speaker 1: I was like, God, no.
- 45:12Speaker 11: I thought at least he was going to be in
- 45:13Speaker 11: there with the cat and was going to be trying
- 45:15Speaker 11: to save the cat while the building was getting demolished.
- 45:18Speaker 6: See, while the teacher was taking so long, and he
- 45:20Speaker 6: was like, I got to go, I got to go.
- 45:21Speaker 6: I was like, oh, no, they're tearing that building down
- 45:22Speaker 6: right now. But no, it was worse.
- 45:26Speaker 12: Oh, that would have been so much better, though. Just story-wise.
- 45:31Speaker 6: I gave it too much credit. I gave Fred too
- 45:33Speaker 6: much credit.
- 45:35Speaker 1: It didn't even occur to me.
- 45:37Speaker 11: No, no, this, I mean, this movie is awesome. If
- 45:40Speaker 11: for no other reason than we get to see a
- 45:42Speaker 11: cat with an eye patch. Yeah, that was a good moment.
- 45:45Speaker 11: That may be the funniest thing I've ever seen.
- 45:47Speaker 6: And you could tell that the actor cat didn't want
- 45:49Speaker 6: the eye patch either.
- 45:50Speaker 11: Like, there was clearly going to be more with.
- 45:52Speaker 6: The eye patch, and then there was some continuity stuff
- 45:55Speaker 6: there with it, too, because it was like that cat
- 45:56Speaker 6: was having none of it.
- 45:57Speaker 11: Any animal that you're going to do that to is
- 45:59Speaker 11: going to immediately be like, get the hell off me,
- 46:01Speaker 11: and just start trying to, yeah, so. That was kind
- 46:04Speaker 11: of my favorite. You see him over there. And I
- 46:06Speaker 11: kind of was.
- 46:06Speaker 12: I'm like, what?
- 46:07Speaker 11: It's much like Grandma. I'm like, what is he doing
- 46:09Speaker 11: over there? Like, little did I know. Cat eye patch.
- 46:13Speaker 11: That's pretty hilarious. But yeah, like, again, it all seems
- 46:17Speaker 11: very real. Like, it seems like something a kid would do. Like,
- 46:20Speaker 11: I'm sure I would have done that.
- 46:21Speaker 1: The only time I thought he was reaching a little
- 46:23Speaker 1: bit was, like, when he was doing his doctor patter.
- 46:27Speaker 1: It was like, really?
- 46:27Speaker 16: Really?
- 46:29Speaker 1: I just went over your charts this morning.
- 46:32Speaker 11: I thought it started. It maybe went on a little long,
- 46:35Speaker 11: but I thought the beginning was pretty funny. I was like,
- 46:38Speaker 11: kids say some crazy stuff sometimes.
- 46:39Speaker 6: But then you had to have it for later when
- 46:41Speaker 6: he's like longingly looking at the stethoscope. Oh, God, it
- 46:47Speaker 6: killed me.
- 46:48Speaker 1: Yeah, it's really affecting.
- 46:50Speaker 13: It is.
- 46:51Speaker 9: Suck me in.
- 46:53Speaker 12: I didn't feel anything.
- 46:55Speaker 1: Really?
- 46:55Speaker 11: But you're dead inside.
- 46:58Speaker 6: I literally, like, I was so excited. I got my laptop, like,
- 47:02Speaker 6: this morning. I woke up, and I was like, I'll
- 47:03Speaker 6: watch this in bed. Yay, JT! And I was, like,
- 47:07Speaker 6: not even just, like, you know, sometimes I get teary
- 47:09Speaker 6: at movies, but, like, I was uncontrollably weeping. And, like,
- 47:13Speaker 6: it started with the cat dying, but then it just, like,
- 47:15Speaker 6: crescendoed with, like, him being so affected by it. Like,
- 47:19Speaker 6: seeing his sad little face, it destroyed me.
- 47:22Speaker 12: I've had a weird alteration in the way I experience
- 47:24Speaker 12: movies emotionally. Like, anything involving... small children getting hurt I
- 47:29Speaker 12: just used to be able to not like stand even
- 47:31Speaker 12: even the scene in the butterfly effect where the baby
- 47:33Speaker 12: gets blown up by it's a stupid scene but it
- 47:35Speaker 12: kind of pissed me off um and.
- 47:38Speaker 6: Then you had a kid and now you're like what up.
- 47:39Speaker 11: No I don't know like I saw think of these kids.
- 47:42Speaker 12: I saw the homesman earlier this week the Tommy Lee Jones.
- 47:44Speaker 6: Movie oh no spoilers for this because I'm really excited.
- 47:46Speaker 12: About seeing this movie this isn't a spoiler and don't
- 47:47Speaker 12: be excited oh I've.
- 47:50Speaker 11: Heard mixed things spoiler for your expectations.
- 47:53Speaker 1: I guess like ha ha ha well that was a
- 47:55Speaker 1: spoiler ha ha ha don't be excited this isn't a
- 48:00Speaker 1: spoiler don't be excited.
- 48:03Speaker 12: Like a baby gets thrown into an outhouse and that's not.
- 48:05Speaker 11: A spoiler that's just kind of gross.
- 48:09Speaker 12: And I was like that was really poorly shot meanwhile
- 48:13Speaker 12: the theory of everything made me.
- 48:16Speaker 9: Tear up in weird ways and i.
- 48:18Speaker 6: Was totally unaffected by that movie totally unaffected you're both
- 48:22Speaker 6: dead inside i don't know i thought it was i
- 48:26Speaker 6: thought it was interesting it was a good performance but
- 48:29Speaker 6: i just didn't i didn't feel anything so.
- 48:31Speaker 1: We're having a contest of who's dead who's deader should
- 48:34Speaker 1: i recuse myself i mean we.
- 48:37Speaker 11: All assume you win but we're trying to find the
- 48:39Speaker 11: next level down I feel like so much of this
- 48:46Speaker 11: still felt pretty real, though. Him building the extra special house.
- 48:50Speaker 11: I'm like, I think I did that kind of stuff, actually.
- 48:54Speaker 11: I'm just stacking crap up and calling it something. That's
- 48:57Speaker 11: what kids do.
- 48:58Speaker 1: If I go through a neighborhood to this day, I
- 49:01Speaker 1: still look at it in terms of opportunities for play.
- 49:06Speaker 1: And just houses and yards, they had this magic fascination
- 49:11Speaker 1: for me. But at the same time, like I have
- 49:14Speaker 1: the adult side of my brain that knows that nothing
- 49:17Speaker 1: really very interesting is happening there. And the two things,
- 49:21Speaker 1: I don't know, they just, they all perpetually make me
- 49:25Speaker 1: want to take a photograph of everything. Just because it's like, well, look,
- 49:30Speaker 1: you can see how, no, I don't know.
- 49:33Speaker 11: Probably not. If you had time, you would stop and
- 49:35Speaker 11: play everywhere.
- 49:36Speaker 16: Yeah.
- 49:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 49:38Speaker 11: No wonder you don't want to work. You're missing play opportunities.
- 49:41Speaker 1: I know. I've got things to do.
- 49:44Speaker 11: I've got clubhouses to build, damn it. I don't have
- 49:47Speaker 11: time for this job.
- 49:49Speaker 1: Go work. Like, I don't have stuff to do. I
- 49:52Speaker 1: don't know, man. It's ridiculous. You go to work and
- 49:56Speaker 1: there's a manager and he's like, can you pick that up?
- 49:58Speaker 1: I don't know. Can you pick it up? Can you
- 50:00Speaker 1: manage to pick it up?
- 50:02Speaker 11: I'm going to go build a clubhouse. You pick that up.
- 50:05Speaker 1: I heard some comedian do that somewhere or something. You
- 50:08Speaker 1: get a job, they want you to show up all
- 50:10Speaker 1: the time. I was like, yeah, I know.
- 50:13Speaker 11: What's that about? So, of the other things that are
- 50:18Speaker 11: lost to the ages, just go into a store and
- 50:21Speaker 11: get in credit. Yeah. Just put it on my account.
- 50:25Speaker 11: I'm just like, yeah, that's not going to happen now.
- 50:28Speaker 11: You can go in debt with a credit card real easy,
- 50:30Speaker 11: but they don't just trust you to come back next
- 50:32Speaker 11: week or two months later and pay your bill. Like,
- 50:36Speaker 11: that's a lost era right there.
- 50:39Speaker 1: I got me some red curtains on credit. I don't
- 50:43Speaker 1: know if you remember that. It's the line from Monster's Ball.
- 50:48Speaker 1: To me, that's the signature line of the entire movie.
- 50:56Speaker 11: On that note, we haven't really addressed the shop owner,
- 51:00Speaker 11: which ends up being a pretty key character in all this.
- 51:05Speaker 1: Yeah, I guess looking back on it, before I watched
- 51:07Speaker 1: it again, I felt like It's going to seem kind
- 51:11Speaker 1: of clumsy, kind of like, you know, it's a little PC.
- 51:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 51:16Speaker 1: But PC didn't exist back then. People didn't even know
- 51:19Speaker 1: what that was. They didn't have a PC on their desk,
- 51:23Speaker 1: and they didn't have the term PC. It was back,
- 51:28Speaker 1: you know, around the time when All in the Family
- 51:31Speaker 1: was on TV, and I guess Norman Lear was doing, like,
- 51:35Speaker 1: social issues thing on stuff on television. But, yeah, I mean,
- 51:40Speaker 1: he was definitely, I was a little worried for his
- 51:44Speaker 1: business plan at points, you know. So was his wife. Yeah,
- 51:48Speaker 1: I mean, like you would be. Ugh, women.
- 51:52Speaker 6: Always trying to put a scarf on you.
- 51:54Speaker 11: Putting scarves on you and shit. What's that about? That
- 51:57Speaker 11: was the most, like, what line? I was like, really? Like,
- 52:02Speaker 11: we've just come to a, like, oh, look at this
- 52:05Speaker 11: wonderful old man. Wait, what was that? Is that a
- 52:08Speaker 11: random sexist remark you just made? But he's an old guy.
- 52:11Speaker 11: I guess you can pull that stuff off when you're
- 52:12Speaker 11: an old guy. Just like, that's a weird moment to
- 52:16Speaker 11: throw that in. It's like you could almost even pull
- 52:19Speaker 11: it off back at the shop in the middle when
- 52:21Speaker 11: we didn't really care about him that much. And he
- 52:22Speaker 11: was sort of a stereotype anyway. But like, yeah, by
- 52:26Speaker 11: the end I was just like, but we just liked
- 52:27Speaker 11: you now. That was an odd moment.
- 52:31Speaker 1: Yeah, and then it has the little echo when she put, Oh, wait,
- 52:35Speaker 1: before you go. And puts the scarf around his neck.
- 52:37Speaker 11: Women always put scarves.
- 52:41Speaker 1: Or the George Carlin joke was, if you fall asleep
- 52:46Speaker 1: on a couch in a house, and there's a woman
- 52:49Speaker 1: in that house, when you wake up, there will be
- 52:52Speaker 1: a cover on you.
- 52:54Speaker 11: Well, the mom proved that. I mean, she comes over
- 52:57Speaker 11: and covers up the.
- 52:58Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 52:58Speaker 11: Which, at one point, is it just me, or did
- 53:00Speaker 11: Grandma refer to herself as the aunt? i don't know
- 53:06Speaker 11: i swear i thought at one point when she's in
- 53:07Speaker 11: there talking to jt after he's upset she's like listen
- 53:11Speaker 11: to your aunt or something like that and i was
- 53:13Speaker 11: like but.
- 53:14Speaker 1: She really didn't look that much.
- 53:16Speaker 11: Yeah but like they always like even in all the
- 53:18Speaker 11: stuff i've read like they always say her mother like
- 53:21Speaker 11: it's always referred to as his grandmother but i was
- 53:23Speaker 11: like i'm pretty sure that line's in and then i
- 53:26Speaker 11: was just like well actually i know of quite a
- 53:28Speaker 11: few people especially of that era where like the mom
- 53:32Speaker 11: dies and the oldest kid steps up and becomes the
- 53:37Speaker 11: new parent because dad works 65 hours a week back then.
- 53:41Speaker 11: And like, so yeah, it's, I know one in my
- 53:44Speaker 11: family that did that. And I know another one that like,
- 53:46Speaker 11: she refers to somebody as mom and another somebody as
- 53:51Speaker 11: mom and neither are birth mother. And like, it, it
- 53:54Speaker 11: gets kind of confusing and weird.
- 53:57Speaker 1: I know a few people.
- 53:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 53:59Speaker 1: I think Jack Nicholson's, uh, mother, told him all his
- 54:04Speaker 1: childhood that she was his sister. And he didn't find
- 54:07Speaker 1: out until he.
- 54:08Speaker 9: Was, like, in his 20s or something.
- 54:11Speaker 6: Didn't she raise him as a girl, too?
- 54:13Speaker 1: Maybe.
- 54:13Speaker 6: I might have just made that up.
- 54:14Speaker 11: I think you're thinking of a couple of horror movies.
- 54:17Speaker 6: Or Ernest Hemingway. It happens. Forgive it.
- 54:22Speaker 11: I'm thinking of a couple right now.
- 54:25Speaker 1: We were raising the puppy as a girl for a
- 54:27Speaker 1: few weeks.
- 54:28Speaker 6: I know. I noticed that. Yeah, it was a weird thing.
- 54:32Speaker 11: No wonder he wears that sweater.
- 54:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 54:35Speaker 11: He's having issues, right?
- 54:37Speaker 1: It is funny. I thought that was interesting, what affects
- 54:42Speaker 1: you in movies and concern about kids. Because I remember
- 54:45Speaker 1: talking to somebody when I was watching The Sopranos. He said, oh,
- 54:50Speaker 1: I think this episode last night, he was taping it
- 54:52Speaker 1: for me because I didn't get HBO.
- 54:54Speaker 16: No.
- 54:55Speaker 1: He said, I don't know. And he gives me the tape.
- 54:57Speaker 1: He says, be careful. I think they maybe went too
- 55:00Speaker 1: far in this one. I don't know. See what you think.
- 55:04Speaker 11: It comes with a warning.
- 55:05Speaker 1: And so the opening shot is, what's his name's kid? Ralphie.
- 55:13Speaker 1: Ralphie's kids are in the backyard playing Lord of the Rings.
- 55:16Speaker 1: And one of them has a bow, an actual bow
- 55:18Speaker 1: and arrow. And the other one has a cardboard box
- 55:21Speaker 1: he's running around with with a Target painted on it.
- 55:24Speaker 1: And I'm like, God, no. No, don't do this. And
- 55:28Speaker 1: Ralphie's in the fucking bathtub. And I'm like, get out
- 55:31Speaker 1: of there. Stop this. And sure enough, the kid gets
- 55:35Speaker 1: shot in the neck. And he's in the hospital. And
- 55:38Speaker 1: then I think later in the episode, Tony kills Ralphie
- 55:43Speaker 1: and cuts him up in a bathtub. But I didn't
- 55:45Speaker 1: care about that. It was like, it's already over.
- 55:49Speaker 11: But the impressive part was when he was in the hospital,
- 55:52Speaker 11: JT went to visit him, and he snuck in.
- 55:55Speaker 1: Snuck in. The perfect crime. Hold him in the hand.
- 55:58Speaker 11: And we've just answered your own question.
- 55:59Speaker 1: Yeah, and so he watched that, and he gave me that,
- 56:02Speaker 1: but then he told me he was watching Mayberry, and
- 56:07Speaker 1: Opie got a job working at the store, and Andy
- 56:10Speaker 1: was all proud of him, and he thought he'd stop
- 56:14Speaker 1: by and see him at the store. And so he
- 56:16Speaker 1: stops in and he says, so how much is that
- 56:20Speaker 1: cologne up there on that shelf? And Opie gets on
- 56:22Speaker 1: a ladder and gets it down and says, it's $ 70.
- 56:25Speaker 1: And he says, I think I'll just wait on that.
- 56:29Speaker 1: And he leaves and Opie goes to put it back
- 56:32Speaker 1: up and he drops it and it smashes on the
- 56:35Speaker 1: floor and there's like cologne everywhere. And I said, so
- 56:39Speaker 1: what happened?
- 56:40Speaker 11: And he said, I don't know.
- 56:41Speaker 1: I couldn't watch it anymore after that. It's just too
- 56:44Speaker 1: much for me. I knew it would be okay and
- 56:47Speaker 1: they'd work it out, but I just couldn't sit through it.
- 56:50Speaker 6: Couldn't wait the 12 minutes for the resolution.
- 56:52Speaker 1: Well, and I'm like, well, it was probably mislabeled. It
- 56:55Speaker 1: couldn't have been $ 70. So he'll worry about it a lot.
- 56:58Speaker 1: It'll turn out it's okay. And it was $ 7. He'll
- 57:01Speaker 1: do the right thing. Yeah. Yeah, but now we'll never know.
- 57:06Speaker 1: We'll never know what happened to Opie. But that was
- 57:09Speaker 1: the thing he couldn't watch. We both got through the
- 57:12Speaker 1: bow and arrow and like the Ralphie scene. I remember
- 57:17Speaker 1: like the raid. He sprayed Tony's face with rain. That
- 57:21Speaker 1: was so funny. But yeah, you got to draw the
- 57:26Speaker 1: line somewhere, I guess.
- 57:27Speaker 12: I actually had to turn off the movie the other
- 57:29Speaker 12: night because I'd been wanting for a while to watch
- 57:31Speaker 12: Definitely Maybe because it's about kind of a divorced father
- 57:35Speaker 12: with his daughter kind of thing.
- 57:36Speaker 1: So I thought this will be cathartic.
- 57:37Speaker 2: In a way.
- 57:38Speaker 12: And I got through the title sequence, which was very
- 57:42Speaker 12: romantic comedy-ish. And then the very first scene after that
- 57:45Speaker 12: was he went to school and there's just utter chaos
- 57:48Speaker 12: because they're teaching the kids sex ed. And the kids
- 57:52Speaker 12: are just going crazy and the parents are going crazy.
- 57:54Speaker 12: And he's like, aren't they a little old for this?
- 57:56Speaker 12: And then they leave. And I had to turn it
- 57:58Speaker 12: off because I decided I just really wasn't going to
- 58:01Speaker 12: agree with the filmmaker's views on the world.
- 58:03Speaker 16: Yeah.
- 58:03Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 58:07Speaker 11: Sometimes that's the case.
- 58:08Speaker 12: I took my four-year-old to the science center and pointed
- 58:10Speaker 12: out the reproductive stuff because my sister is pregnant. So
- 58:14Speaker 12: now she knows where a baby grows and how it
- 58:15Speaker 12: comes out and everything.
- 58:16Speaker 11: She's only four and.
- 58:17Speaker 4: She's cool with that.
- 58:18Speaker 1: That's the way I was with my kids. It's like
- 58:21Speaker 1: anything they want to know, I'm not like the guardian
- 58:25Speaker 1: of information.
- 58:26Speaker 2: Alan, will you explain it to me later? Okay.
- 58:31Speaker 1: Y'all need to go take a field trip to the
- 58:34Speaker 1: science museum.
- 58:35Speaker 16: Yeah.
- 58:39Speaker 9: I do want some visual aids.
- 58:40Speaker 11: That's all I got to say. Oh, Christmas.
- 58:45Speaker 6: You can't get aids that way.
- 58:46Speaker 1: Sorry.
- 58:46Speaker 12: It brings to mind that I watched The Meaning of
- 58:48Speaker 12: Life this year for the first time ever in the
- 58:50Speaker 12: scene where John Cleese is instructing his class on intercourse.
- 58:54Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 58:55Speaker 1: I remember that.
- 58:56Speaker 12: And just brings his wife in and denunciates and he
- 58:57Speaker 12: keeps having to yell.
- 58:58Speaker 1: At them because they're like, look out.
- 59:00Speaker 11: Now this is for you in the back.
- 59:02Speaker 1: Pay attention. That was in The Meaning of Life?
- 59:05Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 59:06Speaker 12: No wait yes yes.
- 59:08Speaker 1: Okay some of them that like the scenes like that
- 59:11Speaker 1: get mixed up in the different python movies for me
- 59:14Speaker 1: as they got more segmented was that the one that
- 59:17Speaker 1: had like uh every sperm is sacred song.
- 59:20Speaker 12: Yeah the universe song and oh.
- 59:23Speaker 1: The universe song is a great song I've always meant
- 59:27Speaker 1: to learn that song, but I can't remember the lyrics.
- 59:30Speaker 12: It's on YouTube, just the song itself.
- 59:32Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 59:32Speaker 1: I just love the whole visual of the thing. Everything
- 59:35Speaker 1: about that scene is... Yeah.
- 59:38Speaker 3: Great.
- 59:40Speaker 1: Yeah, I always wanted to learn, too, like the Grinch lyrics,
- 59:44Speaker 1: the Grinch song. But I can never remember them all.
- 59:47Speaker 1: They're pretty awesome.
- 59:48Speaker 6: Sung by Thoreau Ravenscroft.
- 59:49Speaker 11: That's an extra tie-in there.
- 59:52Speaker 1: Oh, my God.
- 59:53Speaker 6: Uh-huh.
- 59:53Speaker 11: Did you just piece that together?
- 59:55Speaker 1: He's everywhere.
- 59:55Speaker 11: He's in everything. That's awesome.
- 59:58Speaker 6: Now you'll never forget his name either.
- 59:59Speaker 1: Thoreau Ravencroft?
- 1:00:00Speaker 12: No, that's a.
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: Is it Ravencroft or Ravenscroft?
- 1:00:03Speaker 6: Oh, I don't know. Actually, now that I'm saying it.
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: Is it Keith Richard or Keith Richards?
- 1:00:09Speaker 11: You told me he changed it.
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: He did. Early on, they thought it was cooler if
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: it was Richard, and then he changed it.
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: Really?
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:00:16Speaker 6: I'm pretty sure it's Ravenscroft, but I could be wrong.
- 1:00:18Speaker 11: Ravenscroft.
- 1:00:18Speaker 3: That's better.
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: That sounds like that would be like an alternate school
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: at Hogwarts. You might get sorted into Ravenscroft.
- 1:00:27Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:00:28Speaker 11: Every kid just has a really deep voice. I don't
- 1:00:31Speaker 11: know how you ended up in this one.
- 1:00:34Speaker 3: Me either.
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: That's pretty funny.
- 1:00:39Speaker 11: Ravens with an S, Croft. For those of you playing
- 1:00:43Speaker 11: the home game. Ravenscroft.
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: Croft is just like.
- 1:00:48Speaker 9: As in Laura Croft.
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: Well, no, actually, the funniest thing in my hometown, and
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: I like visit it every time I'm in my hometown,
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: is along Scottsville Road, there's these little apartments called Scottscroft
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: Manor Apartments. And it just cracks me up because I know.
- 1:01:08Speaker 11: That's not a real word.
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: Yeah, real estate person was just like, well, what are
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: we going to call it? We want it to sound classy.
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: It's like Scottsville Road apartment sounds like what it is,
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: like dumpy little apartments. I know. Scottscroft. I can't keep
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: a straight face every time I see it. It's just
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: such blatant bullshittery.
- 1:01:35Speaker 12: Is there not a meaning for the suffix croft?
- 1:01:41Speaker 3: Is there? I don't know.
- 1:01:42Speaker 12: I'm going to let you know in a second.
- 1:01:44Speaker 11: The family of Laura.
- 1:01:45Speaker 9: That's what it says.
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: If there is, I think then you could add a
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: croft onto croft to class it up.
- 1:01:51Speaker 3: Croft, croft? Yes.
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: That's a weird tangent.
- 1:01:56Speaker 12: Well, okay, croft is, as one definition, is an area
- 1:02:00Speaker 12: of land with a crofter's dwelling used for crofting, which
- 1:02:03Speaker 12: is small.
- 1:02:04Speaker 11: How many times can we work croft into this sentence?
- 1:02:07Speaker 12: Which is small-scale food production.
- 1:02:09Speaker 11: Croft, croft, croft, croft, croft. That sounds like English people crafting,
- 1:02:14Speaker 11: doesn't it? Oh, I do some crofting.
- 1:02:18Speaker 12: You've also got Crofton Town, which is a place.
- 1:02:21Speaker 11: A made-up place.
- 1:02:22Speaker 12: Yeah, ton means town, so that's... So, as far as land, yeah,
- 1:02:29Speaker 12: it's an area of land where a small-scale food producer lives.
- 1:02:34Speaker 11: Just throwing off our whole plan of them being full
- 1:02:36Speaker 11: of shit. So, Scott's Croft.
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: No, I think it's still full of shit.
- 1:02:41Speaker 11: It's still them reaching for more class than they actually have.
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: Unless there's a small-scale food producer living in those apartments.
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: There might be. There could be.
- 1:02:51Speaker 12: But it would only be, I think, the land that
- 1:02:53Speaker 12: he owns or she owns.
- 1:02:54Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: And they're not landowners. They're land renters.
- 1:02:57Speaker 12: So it's not.
- 1:02:59Speaker 9: Well, sucks to be them.
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: And that reminds me. This, JT, and one other movie
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: kind of have this connection in my mind, although they
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: have no real connection. They may. They may have a
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: connection that I don't know about. But the movie Tomorrow,
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: you've probably heard me talk about. Which one? It's early
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: Robert Duvall. It's based on a Faulkner story.
- 1:03:22Speaker 11: I do kind of remember you, yeah.
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: And he plays this guy who is a sharecropper and
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: he lives on this little patch of land and works
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: the land for somebody. And they tell him, oh, we
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: can build you a house here if you're going to
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: stay here and work. But for now, there's this barn
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: he's staying in, and he doesn't care. But this pregnant
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: woman shows up, whose family has abandoned her, and she's
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: not doing well, and he takes care of her. You know,
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: he gets involved in taking care of her.
- 1:03:56Speaker 11: Does he keep her in an oven?
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: Yeah, he keeps her in an oven with a plastic
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: umbrella on.
- 1:04:01Speaker 11: All right, well, then he is taken care of.
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: And he's so good in that role. It's like if
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: you've ever run into, like.
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: Actual mountain guys who are kind of like really shy
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: and they have like this, this, this kind of stilted
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: way of talking. Like they're a little shy and they're
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: a lot like the guys in, uh, Tucker and Dale.
- 1:04:23Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: You know, they're like, they're kind of shy. They're not
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: really outgoing. And he has this awkward way of talking
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: that sounds almost a little speech impediment. But, uh, he
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: says things like, I'm going to save you. Yeah.
- 1:04:37Speaker 11: Seems like it would work really well with Robert Duvall.
- 1:04:39Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: And then, uh, and then this guy comes by to
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: see him and he's like, and he gets like standoffish
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: cause he's got that woman there and he's, and the
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: guy's like, I didn't come by to spy on you.
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: I came by to see if you want to go fishing.
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: And then he's like, then he wants the house now.
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: So he marches off the, where he wants the house built.
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: And it's just, it's, It's a great little movie with
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: a lot of the same kinds of themes. And it's
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: one that not many people have seen, but I keep
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: trying to... I think it got an Oscar one year.
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: It was a while back.
- 1:05:22Speaker 11: At any point, does some random hoodlum come pick up
- 1:05:24Speaker 11: the pregnant woman and throw her into traffic?
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: Yeah, that happens.
- 1:05:30Speaker 11: The really disturbing thing is, on the way over here,
- 1:05:35Speaker 11: there's a black cat sitting at the edge of the road,
- 1:05:38Speaker 11: like past the parked cars. It's only kind of a
- 1:05:41Speaker 11: lane and a half-ish to work with anyway, and he's
- 1:05:44Speaker 11: sitting right at the edge there. And I'm like, damn it,
- 1:05:48Speaker 11: if you run out in front of me, I'm like,
- 1:05:50Speaker 11: if this all comes true just for the sake of
- 1:05:52Speaker 11: this crazy movie, I do not want any of this.
- 1:05:55Speaker 11: I'm like, I'm going to slow down.
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: Yeah, this street up here is like a street of cats.
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: You really have to watch it.
- 1:06:01Speaker 6: Good to know.
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: There's like a, a guy there who sort of takes
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: care of a lot of the stray cats, and so
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: they know that and they congregate there.
- 1:06:11Speaker 6: Speaking of things that are completely different based on era
- 1:06:14Speaker 6: and the reason why you can never remake this film
- 1:06:16Speaker 6: now is that nobody would actually stop their car and
- 1:06:19Speaker 6: nobody would actually gather or care.
- 1:06:20Speaker 11: Yeah, there wouldn't be a whole bunch of people around going,
- 1:06:22Speaker 11: what happened? They'd barely do that if a person got hit,
- 1:06:26Speaker 11: let alone a cat. So, yeah.
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: Again, I mean, there are.
- 1:06:31Speaker 11: Moments that are very, like, it does seem like a
- 1:06:33Speaker 11: TV special. Like, even the way, like, it's structured, but
- 1:06:37Speaker 11: I kind of don't care because I kind of like
- 1:06:39Speaker 11: the way it wraps up so well. Like, is it very, like,
- 1:06:43Speaker 11: does it feel very written by Jane Wagner that not
- 1:06:47Speaker 11: only does he return the radio that he steals at
- 1:06:50Speaker 11: the beginning of the movie, but he then immediately decides
- 1:06:54Speaker 11: to get his act together and go get a job
- 1:06:56Speaker 11: at 11 years old. He like, he so turns his
- 1:06:59Speaker 11: entire life around in the span of this one scene.
- 1:07:02Speaker 11: And I'm like, I kind of don't care because I
- 1:07:04Speaker 11: want good things for this kid. So it's like, I
- 1:07:06Speaker 11: don't care how cliche or made for TV wrap up
- 1:07:09Speaker 11: it is because it's what I wanted to see happen
- 1:07:12Speaker 11: outside of that middle part with the cat. But even
- 1:07:14Speaker 11: then we kind of like, well, there's a replacement cat.
- 1:07:17Speaker 11: Sorry about that part. But everything sort of wraps up
- 1:07:20Speaker 11: in the most TV way, but I kind of don't care.
- 1:07:23Speaker 12: Well, you say he's turning his life around. He was
- 1:07:25Speaker 12: never really as bad a kid as they all thought
- 1:07:27Speaker 12: he was. So I don't think he turned his life around.
- 1:07:29Speaker 12: Now that everybody kind of saw that he can, in fact,
- 1:07:31Speaker 12: be responsible, he felt more comfortable being a word about.
- 1:07:36Speaker 3: That, I guess.
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that's true. I think you sort of
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: follow the way people see you a little bit.
- 1:07:41Speaker 11: Well, I think he did, but it was that this
- 1:07:44Speaker 11: is what we could show on TV in 1969. So
- 1:07:47Speaker 11: I think it's also like a 69, for all practical purposes,
- 1:07:52Speaker 11: a slightly simpler time. The evils and horrible things going
- 1:07:55Speaker 11: on are equally as rampant, but I feel like we
- 1:07:59Speaker 11: can't show him doing crack yet. We can't show, like,
- 1:08:02Speaker 11: the prostitutes on the corner. That was probably all going
- 1:08:05Speaker 11: on right then, too. It wasn't crack yet. But still, like,
- 1:08:07Speaker 11: I'm sure all these horrible things were there, but they're
- 1:08:10Speaker 11: not going to show. I mean, it actually was made
- 1:08:12Speaker 11: for Saturday morning programming.
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:08:14Speaker 11: And it got such good reviews, they re-ran it the
- 1:08:19Speaker 11: next week in primetime.
- 1:08:20Speaker 6: Yeah, that's amazing.
- 1:08:21Speaker 11: Yeah. I mean, again, that probably wouldn't happen now either.
- 1:08:24Speaker 11: Networks would be like, tough luck, here's your spot. But
- 1:08:28Speaker 11: in one week, it got such good praise that they
- 1:08:31Speaker 11: felt like they need to share it with grown-ups too,
- 1:08:34Speaker 11: which I think is pretty impressive.
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: I do think it transcends those sort of clunky moments
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: that you expect as a happy ending because... I mean,
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: if you just compare it to other things that have
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: those same moments, it's just... It seems like it earns them,
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: I think.
- 1:08:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:08:53Speaker 11: I think because he's such a real kid, too. He
- 1:08:56Speaker 11: does not feel like a Hollywood kid.
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: Yeah, he's not like that perpetual cute black kid that
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: you had to have on TV.
- 1:09:02Speaker 11: And I looked him up now, and thank God he
- 1:09:04Speaker 11: grew into those teeth. He just had the most messed
- 1:09:08Speaker 11: up kid teeth And I'm just like that's just because
- 1:09:09Speaker 11: he's a kid He had kind of a Jerry Seinfeld
- 1:09:13Speaker 11: Yeah I was like I'm assuming So later he became
- 1:09:16Speaker 11: a very handsome man He.
- 1:09:17Speaker 6: Still has that same goofy smile He grew into.
- 1:09:19Speaker 11: Him or he got caps I don't know which Either
- 1:09:21Speaker 11: way good for you man he grew into it But
- 1:09:25Speaker 11: yeah I think so much of that is like He's
- 1:09:27Speaker 11: just a really genuine kid This was his first acting
- 1:09:31Speaker 11: job So he probably wasn't acting Very much Can you imagine.
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: Putting that on your resume when you were a kid?
- 1:09:38Speaker 11: Remember that movie?
- 1:09:42Speaker 16: I don't know.
- 1:09:42Speaker 12: Maybe in some ways it's easier for me. I really
- 1:09:45Speaker 12: love Kevengene Wallace in Beasts of the Southern Wild, and
- 1:09:47Speaker 12: it felt like you just put a six-year-old in there
- 1:09:49Speaker 12: and just kind of let her run around with fireworks,
- 1:09:51Speaker 12: and she's going to get an Oscar nomination. And now
- 1:09:53Speaker 12: she's acting for Annie, and I haven't seen it yet,
- 1:09:56Speaker 12: of course, but you watch the trailer, it just kind
- 1:09:58Speaker 12: of looks.
- 1:09:59Speaker 11: It looks pretty good. Standard, yeah.
- 1:10:01Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: I don't know. There's something about that. If you can
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: get people to be natural on camera and have the
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: material that makes you care about what they're doing, that's
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: probably true.
- 1:10:13Speaker 11: It's hard to do, but I think it's easier with
- 1:10:15Speaker 11: kids because kids don't have that barrier yet. They don't
- 1:10:18Speaker 11: know that they shouldn't be doing that, so I think
- 1:10:20Speaker 11: it works better if you kind of get those most
- 1:10:24Speaker 11: honest performances out of the kids, their first performance.
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: It's really hard with inarticulate mountain men. Unless they're Robert Duvall.
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: Unless they're like... production of All the King's Men.
- 1:10:35Speaker 11: Odd thing was, before that movie, Robert Duvall actually was
- 1:10:38Speaker 11: an inarticulate mountain man. And after that, he found his
- 1:10:40Speaker 11: calling and turned his life around, too.
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: Well, he said... And this ties back into the show,
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: and Angel wanted me to make this point. She brings
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: this up a lot. Duvall doesn't like to watch other actors.
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: He likes watching old newsreel stuff and just seeing... like
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: documentary stuff, because he thinks you see more real stuff
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: in that.
- 1:11:06Speaker 11: He seems like an odd character, but he makes it work.
- 1:11:09Speaker 11: He's so good on screen that whenever weird stuff he
- 1:11:12Speaker 11: wants to do off screen, more power to you, buddy.
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: I always get annoyed at him because of his politics.
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: I don't know why he can't just be a liberal
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: douchebag like every other actor. Wasn't that... I don't know.
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: I thought there was a rule about that.
- 1:11:27Speaker 11: I try not to pay attention to any of their politics.
- 1:11:30Speaker 11: Or regular people's bodies.
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: It does seem weird that, like, you would look to
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: somebody who, you know, has an artistic ability for, like,
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: guidance on other stuff. I mean, how does that make sense?
- 1:11:41Speaker 6: You're really good at pretending to be other people.
- 1:11:43Speaker 11: Perhaps you could.
- 1:11:44Speaker 6: Tell me about how to govern countries.
- 1:11:45Speaker 11: Could one of your fake personalities tell me what I
- 1:11:48Speaker 11: should think in the real world?
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: Yeah, but, I mean, I guess they do that with
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: everybody because, like, Jesus could walk on water and then
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: they ask him about religion. I'd be asking him about physics.
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: I mean.
- 1:12:00Speaker 11: I'd be asking him to promote my new Diet Coke.
- 1:12:04Speaker 11: You know he'd be getting sponsorships now, so it was
- 1:12:08Speaker 11: obviously another era there, too.
- 1:12:11Speaker 9: Jesus, for Diet Coke.
- 1:12:13Speaker 11: You know, when I've walked across the lake, it's a
- 1:12:18Speaker 11: hot day. Kick back with a Diet Coke.
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: You're really good at making up commercials off the top
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: of your head. That Tom Waits commercial.
- 1:12:25Speaker 11: I wonder how many have seeped in over the years
- 1:12:27Speaker 11: is the problem.
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: Yeah, that Tom Waits Pringles commercial, that was just.
- 1:12:33Speaker 11: Yeah, that one, I probably couldn't have come up with
- 1:12:35Speaker 11: it if I thought too much. It just happened. That
- 1:12:39Speaker 11: was last year's holiday extravaganza.
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: Well, have we done JT? Is there more to the story?
- 1:12:44Speaker 11: I think that was most of it. I mean, I
- 1:12:46Speaker 11: don't know. Do you take anything from it other than
- 1:12:48Speaker 11: what it presents on the screen? Because, I mean, it
- 1:12:51Speaker 11: throws out a lot of big questions, like mostly Grandma.
- 1:12:54Speaker 11: I mean, Grandma has all the big lines of... I mean,
- 1:12:57Speaker 11: the one I actually kind of liked is You know,
- 1:13:00Speaker 11: they're going through The Cats Have Nine Lives, and she's like,
- 1:13:02Speaker 11: you've only got one life to live. What are you
- 1:13:04Speaker 11: going to do with it? And I'm like, that's a
- 1:13:05Speaker 11: pretty damn good question, actually. It's like, TV movie of
- 1:13:09Speaker 11: the week or not, that's a pretty damn good question.
- 1:13:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:13:12Speaker 11: Especially for a little kid at that point.
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: I liked the thing when he got a job. I
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: think I was about the age when I got a job,
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: and I'm a big supporter of child labor.
- 1:13:21Speaker 9: Child labor.
- 1:13:22Speaker 11: That's what happened.
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: I really am. Just because people do it. Wrong and
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: ruin it doesn't mean that it's not a good thing.
- 1:13:30Speaker 11: That coal's not going to mine itself, damn it.
- 1:13:32Speaker 4: Yeah, no.
- 1:13:33Speaker 6: Little hands are so effective.
- 1:13:35Speaker 11: Who needs canaries when you got little kids?
- 1:13:40Speaker 12: Anyway.
- 1:13:41Speaker 6: I did feel like he was wasting himself in retail, though.
- 1:13:44Speaker 6: I felt like veterinary medicine was clearly where he was headed.
- 1:13:47Speaker 11: Well, he's working his way up.
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: You did get the feeling that he, like, was projecting, like,
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: being a doctor or taking care of animals in some way.
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: I mean, it seemed like it just really hit the
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: spot for him.
- 1:14:01Speaker 6: Can we talk about what a terrible teacher she was?
- 1:14:04Speaker 6: There is nothing about that scene that would not suggest
- 1:14:06Speaker 6: that he can't read or write. Like, nothing about that scene.
- 1:14:09Speaker 11: Except he could. Like, later we saw that he could.
- 1:14:12Speaker 11: But I'm like, he must have... Well, I mean, he
- 1:14:13Speaker 11: wrote Welcome. I assume she knew his work.
- 1:14:16Speaker 6: Well, for her, he just drew a cat, which to
- 1:14:19Speaker 6: me would suggest this child.
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: He really likes cats oh i love the scene in
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: the bathroom with the kid who could draw could you
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: draw that i.
- 1:14:27Speaker 11: Thought that was i thought that was going somewhere actually
- 1:14:30Speaker 11: because i like that kid and i was like i
- 1:14:32Speaker 11: hope we get more with this kid because he's kind
- 1:14:33Speaker 11: of weird but i'm totally sold on him yeah.
- 1:14:36Speaker 6: And that scene went nowhere i was actually wondering if
- 1:14:38Speaker 6: that kid had like won a contest like if it
- 1:14:40Speaker 6: was like a saturday morning like you could be on
- 1:14:42Speaker 6: a saturday Because it didn't go anywhere.
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: It really didn't go anywhere, but it was really memorable
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: and vivid, and it just seemed like that.
- 1:14:52Speaker 6: No, and he rocked those glasses.
- 1:14:53Speaker 11: Yeah, he made glasses cool.
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: Yeah, and that had nothing to do with anything.
- 1:14:58Speaker 6: Oh, maybe there was like an optical sponsor or something.
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: There you go.
- 1:15:02Speaker 11: Yeah, looks like you need glasses. That kid's obviously going
- 1:15:05Speaker 11: to be an optometrist. This art thing is a waste
- 1:15:07Speaker 11: of time.
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: And they're going to be like buddies for the rest
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: of their life. There's going to be an optometrist shop,
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: a veterinary shop next door. They'll go have lunch together
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: and play chess.
- 1:15:18Speaker 11: Well, that kid will doodle on the napkin. It'll be
- 1:15:19Speaker 11: really good, but he's not going to do anything with that.
- 1:15:22Speaker 11: He's got glasses to paint.
- 1:15:24Speaker 6: Go to dance parties. The clothes. I want to talk
- 1:15:28Speaker 6: about the clothes mostly. Maybe exclusively.
- 1:15:31Speaker 11: All right. You were shopping is what you're saying? throughout
- 1:15:36Speaker 11: if you don't know lucy likes her some vintage clothes.
- 1:15:38Speaker 6: Yeah i was thinking of etsy keywords to type in
- 1:15:40Speaker 6: following the film.
- 1:15:42Speaker 11: Just putting jt and everything cast of jt where are
- 1:15:46Speaker 11: they now can i have your wardrobe i did.
- 1:15:49Speaker 6: Notice which i really loved and i thought was a
- 1:15:51Speaker 6: fun detail and i assume it was purposeful because how
- 1:15:54Speaker 6: could it not be like how friggin swank the mom
- 1:15:57Speaker 6: was i mean she was dressed to the nines constantly
- 1:16:00Speaker 6: like not just dressed but like you know, had like
- 1:16:03Speaker 6: accessories and things that a person on a budget would
- 1:16:06Speaker 6: not have. So you can only assume that she owned
- 1:16:08Speaker 6: those things in her previous life and she was still
- 1:16:10Speaker 6: trying to sort of project this image of this working person.
- 1:16:13Speaker 6: And I just felt like there was the whole subplot
- 1:16:16Speaker 6: there that was just based on that one cue.
- 1:16:19Speaker 11: Again, there was a lot, I felt like, in between
- 1:16:22Speaker 11: the lines with the mom situation and how much had
- 1:16:26Speaker 11: happened and ever since your dad left and I got
- 1:16:29Speaker 11: to work all day. And like, and it's just these
- 1:16:30Speaker 11: few lines here and there. And like, How guilty she
- 1:16:34Speaker 11: feels towards the end when she's just like, I should
- 1:16:37Speaker 11: have been paying attention. I should have been, you know,
- 1:16:39Speaker 11: nurturing him more. I should have noticed he was the
- 1:16:41Speaker 11: sweetest kid ever. Yeah, I was just like, I should
- 1:16:44Speaker 11: have realized I was not paying attention to the details.
- 1:16:47Speaker 11: And again, I was like, that's just kind of parenting
- 1:16:50Speaker 11: when you got way too much stuff to do. But
- 1:16:52Speaker 11: I do feel like there was, what little time we
- 1:16:54Speaker 11: spend with her, I think she does such a good
- 1:16:56Speaker 11: performance with it.
- 1:16:57Speaker 12: I sure don't feel like doing no Christmas decorating this year.
- 1:17:01Speaker 14: JT won't even know the difference.
- 1:17:04Speaker 3: Ain't no Christmas.
- 1:17:05Speaker 16: Tree gonna jolt him out of his misery.
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: Been unfair to him, Mama.
- 1:17:15Speaker 16: Put all my frustrations on that boy.
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: I lost how to reach him.
- 1:17:25Speaker 11: And I had to look up that actor because she was.
- 1:17:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:17:28Speaker 11: Ridiculously pretty. I was just like, what else was she on?
- 1:17:32Speaker 11: On Good Times? All right, I need to go watch
- 1:17:34Speaker 11: some Good Times.
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: Was she on Good Times?
- 1:17:37Speaker 11: She was not. I think she was the friend. Because
- 1:17:41Speaker 11: the mom had that friend that turned up, but I
- 1:17:44Speaker 11: think only for a while.
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: On those shows back then, there was always a hot friend.
- 1:17:46Speaker 11: There was always a hot friend that wandered in from
- 1:17:49Speaker 11: across the hall.
- 1:17:50Speaker 3: Uh-huh.
- 1:17:50Speaker 4: Wow.
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: I would have thought I was watching that.
- 1:17:56Speaker 6: Cue sounds of panting.
- 1:17:58Speaker 11: I was going to let the dog party finish and
- 1:18:00Speaker 11: then we'll continue on.
- 1:18:03Speaker 6: Hot lady and then there's a panting sound effect.
- 1:18:06Speaker 11: That's no sound effect.
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: Yeah, just keep that clip. And we'll have that every
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: time a hot lady is mentioned.
- 1:18:16Speaker 11: Lucy likes her some hot dudes.
- 1:18:17Speaker 6: I was just panting over the clothes.
- 1:18:23Speaker 11: So which were your favorites? Were there specific terms that
- 1:18:26Speaker 11: you were going to type in?
- 1:18:28Speaker 6: I really dug his corduroy jacket with the little faux
- 1:18:31Speaker 6: fur collar. I liked that one a lot. I liked
- 1:18:33Speaker 6: really everything she wore. I liked the jackets most of all. Oh,
- 1:18:36Speaker 6: at the very beginning, there's like a little girl skipping rope,
- 1:18:38Speaker 6: and she's wearing a dynamite jacket. All the extras were
- 1:18:42Speaker 6: very well-attached. Like Jimmy J.J.
- 1:18:43Speaker 11: Walker dynamite?
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: Yeah, do you apply like vintage terms to vintage clothes?
- 1:18:49Speaker 11: That jacket is dynamite at some point you're like what
- 1:18:55Speaker 11: are you talking about jt you gotta work in all
- 1:18:58Speaker 11: your 70s and 80s catchphrases some.
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: Kid uh was auditioning for an indie movie uh Kid
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: from here in town. I think it was John Chorey's
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: son by one of his ex-wives. It was. And he
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: was supposed to play a 70s pothead, and he was
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: grilling me about the slang. He was saying, did they.
- 1:19:22Speaker 11: What is he saying about you?
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: He said, did people say things were cool back then?
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: I'm like, yeah, that's been around for a while. There
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: were some others, too. And I was like, yeah. But then...
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: I do remember vividly, like, groups of potheads, maybe it
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: was just us, would spawn their own language.
- 1:19:44Speaker 11: I think most friends, if they have any sense about them,
- 1:19:47Speaker 11: which potheads probably is arguable, but, you know, I mean,
- 1:19:51Speaker 11: some of the horrible things that we've spun off just
- 1:19:53Speaker 11: in our little group on this show that now we
- 1:19:55Speaker 11: will reference as a term that, like, only we get.
- 1:19:59Speaker 11: I would think most groups of friends.
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: Yeah, I wonder if you ever got that part. Oh, yeah. Burlesque.
- 1:20:07Speaker 11: Burlesque.
- 1:20:08Speaker 6: Still my favorite.
- 1:20:10Speaker 11: Old school fans have to remember that. If not, you'll
- 1:20:13Speaker 11: have to delve through the archives. So, I guess to
- 1:20:17Speaker 11: wrap up, what does Christmas mean to you? In bad
- 1:20:22Speaker 11: teacher form.
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: What does Christmas.
- 1:20:26Speaker 6: Yeah, no, I was like, she's... Well, she said or more.
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: She's the.
- 1:20:29Speaker 6: It just had to be at least.
- 1:20:29Speaker 11: But still, 25 words. He's not like a four-year-old. Like,
- 1:20:34Speaker 11: why 25 words? Like, they're old enough to write a
- 1:20:36Speaker 11: real theme. Even Ralphie wrote more than that.
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: Is she gonna post to the... On Twitter?
- 1:20:42Speaker 13: Really?
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: What are they?
- 1:20:43Speaker 11: Keep it under 140 characters, kids.
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: Tweet what Christmas means to you.
- 1:20:48Speaker 11: Tweet me your assignment this week. That's about how bad
- 1:20:50Speaker 11: she was, actually. Like, the fact that he would just
- 1:20:53Speaker 11: come and go from school, which, again, probably could happen
- 1:20:55Speaker 11: very easily back then, but still, like, he would just
- 1:20:58Speaker 11: leave and disappear and she wouldn't see him all day.
- 1:21:01Speaker 11: The fact that he never really seemed to be doing
- 1:21:04Speaker 11: work in school... Or at home.
- 1:21:06Speaker 6: And then he gave no indication that he could read
- 1:21:08Speaker 6: or write.
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: Well, and then he wrote welcome, damn it.
- 1:21:11Speaker 6: But she didn't know that.
- 1:21:12Speaker 11: Well, I'm saying he could. She just didn't know that
- 1:21:15Speaker 11: because she's a terrible person. But yeah, the fact that
- 1:21:19Speaker 11: she like also like, how long did that go on? Like,
- 1:21:22Speaker 11: are you not teaching them anything else the whole rest
- 1:21:24Speaker 11: of the week? Like, how long was this period she
- 1:21:27Speaker 11: gave them to do 25 words and like, She's still
- 1:21:31Speaker 11: checking back days and days later. I'm like, are you
- 1:21:34Speaker 11: not doing anything else in the classroom between then? What
- 1:21:38Speaker 11: is this teaching going on? Because it's a sorry excuse
- 1:21:41Speaker 11: for her.
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: I guess that's the thing about the whole movie that
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: I really love is that it's so efficient when it's
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: going somewhere that it has time. to have this other
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: stuff that doesn't go anywhere. And that stuff is really
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: great because I remember, like in most plays, if you
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: mention someone's coming to visit and they're coming on the
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: next train, they always walk in right then because they
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: took an earlier train. You announce it, it happens. It's
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: like a clockwork and it's predictable and it's depressing. And
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: it's just lovely. To have something that, like, there's no
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: reason for that. But it's really well done. And it's
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: part of the art of acting and showing people existing. And, like,
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: the mom having, like, this evidence of this life that
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: we're not going to go into.
- 1:22:39Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: But you see glimpses of it reflected in the choices.
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: And I guess the comparison I'd make to it is,
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: last night I was trying to watch a movie called
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: Bad Meat. which I've been planning to watch for maybe
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: 10 years and never got around to it.
- 1:22:57Speaker 11: It's a long-range plan you've got.
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: And it was the editor of The Onion back in
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: their early days, Scott Dickers, and he tried to go
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: into movies. And this was his movie that he co-wrote
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: with somebody. And I thought I ought to watch that.
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: And it's just so terrible. It's just amazingly terrible. And
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: I think part of the reason is, is like, The
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: idea for the movie is there. There's a story. There's
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: a plot. There's stuff happening. But there's not any fun
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: stuff for anybody else in the movie to do except
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: the guy who's having the idea for the movie and
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: sort of writing it or co-writing it. There's not really
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: any acting that I couldn't do. And that sets a
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: really low bar. And it's just so depressingly... It would
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: be better if you just heard him tell you the movie.
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: It would be a better thing. It would be more
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: entertaining if you just sat down and he said, okay,
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: I have this movie where these guys do this and that. Okay,
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: all right. That's all I need. It doesn't have that
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: extra stuff that just really enjoys what you can do.
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: with making a movie.
- 1:24:15Speaker 11: I think that's the key to these things that we
- 1:24:18Speaker 11: latch on to and we come back to time and
- 1:24:20Speaker 11: time again is those movies that feel lived in. That
- 1:24:23Speaker 11: it really does feel like that's a real place. Those
- 1:24:26Speaker 11: are real people and that maybe, and this I think
- 1:24:29Speaker 11: JT definitely feels like that, like that place could still
- 1:24:32Speaker 11: be going on. Like, you know, it's like that felt
- 1:24:35Speaker 11: like it was all the stuff that was going on
- 1:24:37Speaker 11: there was going on before we started watching and continued
- 1:24:40Speaker 11: on after we watched. And like, You don't always feel
- 1:24:42Speaker 11: like that. Sometimes it is a very like stage play
- 1:24:45Speaker 11: performance and it's like, okay, and go. People sat down
- 1:24:48Speaker 11: and watching this. Now we start acting, you know, but
- 1:24:50Speaker 11: it's like, if to me, if it's a really good
- 1:24:52Speaker 11: performance and a really good like piece that this, you know,
- 1:24:55Speaker 11: director or writer or whoever is put together, it feels
- 1:24:58Speaker 11: like a real thing that goes on and has been
- 1:25:01Speaker 11: going on before you ever came into it. I think,
- 1:25:03Speaker 11: I think JT has that even in its more clunkier moment.
- 1:25:07Speaker 11: I think everything else is so well pieced together.
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: Yeah, it still feels like that lady is going to
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: be sarcastic in the hallway.
- 1:25:14Speaker 11: Tomorrow.
- 1:25:15Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:25:15Speaker 11: The teacher's going to continue to be a bad teacher.
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: It's not like the minor characters in, it always bothered me,
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: like the minor characters in Moulin Rouge, their lives just
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: revolve around the stars like they know they're the stars
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: of the movie. Who told them that they're in a movie?
- 1:25:32Speaker 16: Yeah.
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: It's like, we don't care what's happening for us. These
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: are the main characters.
- 1:25:38Speaker 11: We'll go stand in the back and be quiet when
- 1:25:39Speaker 11: they talk.
- 1:25:40Speaker 12: Shh, dialogue.
- 1:25:44Speaker 11: Anything else that Christmas means to you that we need
- 1:25:47Speaker 11: to pass along before we wrap this up?
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: Oh, that's a broad question.
- 1:25:51Speaker 12: Has anybody seen the I Am Santa Claus documentary?
- 1:25:57Speaker 11: I saw someone post it earlier today, I think. I've
- 1:26:01Speaker 11: heard pretty good things from everybody on there that had
- 1:26:04Speaker 11: mentioned it.
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: I've been watching a lot of documentaries.
- 1:26:08Speaker 11: I heard a couple of good ones on that little feed.
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: The most fun thing in the movie I was watching
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: last night was a promo for a documentary called Confessions
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: of a Superhero.
- 1:26:22Speaker 11: Have you seen that? No.
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: It seemed like they were celebrity lookalikes, like there was
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: a guy who looks like Christopher Reed.
- 1:26:29Speaker 11: I do remember this trailer. I haven't seen it, but
- 1:26:32Speaker 11: I do remember the trailer.
- 1:26:33Speaker 9: I'm going to have to.
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: Check that out. It's weird when you're like halfway, or God,
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: I hope halfway through a movie, and you're thinking, that's
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: an interesting.
- 1:26:44Speaker 11: You're still thinking about the trailer of another movie that's
- 1:26:48Speaker 11: probably better than this one.
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: It looked pretty funny. The guy kind of does look
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: like Christopher Reed, but just, you know, off a little.
- 1:26:58Speaker 12: I was at the tap room last night with some people,
- 1:27:00Speaker 12: and there was a guy who looked, the way the
- 1:27:03Speaker 12: people described it is, it was like somebody told him
- 1:27:05Speaker 12: he looked like Joseph Gordon-Levitt, he just ran with it.
- 1:27:08Speaker 12: And he really does, like, imagine what Joseph Gordon-Levitt looks like,
- 1:27:11Speaker 12: and that's exactly what this guy looked like. It was amazing.
- 1:27:14Speaker 11: Sometimes it's best to not tell people they look like celebrities.
- 1:27:17Speaker 11: I think it just goes horribly wrong.
- 1:27:20Speaker 12: I don't know what his deal was because I didn't
- 1:27:22Speaker 12: know him.
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: But yeah, it was weird.
- 1:27:28Speaker 12: I ended up being able to just observe him for
- 1:27:30Speaker 12: about an hour because he happened to go all the
- 1:27:32Speaker 12: places I was. He just grabbed this drunk woman and
- 1:27:36Speaker 12: told her that she needed to stop being so drunk.
- 1:27:38Speaker 12: He'd been stumbling around all night himself.
- 1:27:41Speaker 11: Sounds like drunk activity to me. This is why I
- 1:27:44Speaker 11: don't go places.
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: I keep meaning to go there, because they do that
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: open mic, and I know some people who play there.
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: And you made me think of my Christmas thing.
- 1:27:56Speaker 11: Okay, what is your Christmas theory?
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: Well, about the time, like, I was remembering JT, and
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: I remember I liked it, and I was going to
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: watch it again, and it held up to watching again,
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: but somewhere in that time, I re-heard the Velvet Underground song,
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: Rock and Roll. and it just came back to me
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: how much i fucking love that song and i had
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: completely forgotten about it i had just forgotten it was
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: even a thing but i heard it and i'm like
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: because i'm not really always a big fan of lou
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: reed's voice or anything um.
- 1:28:27Speaker 11: I i have respect for what he was doing but
- 1:28:29Speaker 11: yeah i'm kind of hit and miss sometimes on the
- 1:28:31Speaker 11: song it.
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: Just sounds like he has bad breath or something.
- 1:28:35Speaker 11: You know That's a very good ear you have.
- 1:28:37Speaker 16: Yeah.
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: Well, I've described his voice in a positive way as
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: sounding like he keeps looking for the note even after
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: he's hit it, like a guy looking for his car
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: keys while he's holding them in his hand.
- 1:28:51Speaker 11: He's still patting his pockets.
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: And that's cool, but I think it works sometimes, and
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: it really works in that song. And if you don't
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: know the song, it's about a five-year-old named Jenny who's
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: experiencing ennui. There's just nothing going on. There's nothing on
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: the radio. Every time she turns on the radio, there's
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: nothing happening. And then she turns on, one day she
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: turns on this New York station, which I believe is
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: the same station that JT was listening to and telling
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: the cat about. And then all of a sudden she
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: discovers rock and roll and it saves her life is
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: what the next line says. Nice. Her life is saved
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: by rock and roll.
- 1:29:35Speaker 11: I was trying to decide what we need to go
- 1:29:38Speaker 11: out on. I think, you know, as the tie-in, J.T.
- 1:29:41Speaker 11: listening to this station.
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:29:43Speaker 11: Your Christmas miracle right there.
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: And the thing it does, and it's sort of in J.T.,
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: But that song captures that moment in life that can
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: happen any time to anyone, no matter how old you are,
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: where you just go, fuck it, I love what I love.
- 1:29:59Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: You know?
- 1:30:00Speaker 11: And I want to share it with my cat.
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:30:03Speaker 5: Yes.
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: Yeah, and that's a great, to me, that's a Christmas thought.
- 1:30:07Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:30:09Speaker 11: And I think that's how we should get out of here.
- 1:30:11Speaker 6: Merry Christmas, everyone.
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: Merry Christmas.
- 1:30:14Speaker 11: Happy Life Day.
- 1:30:15Speaker 3: And, yeah.
- 1:30:17Speaker 11: I mean, I'm rolling them all into one. This is
- 1:30:20Speaker 11: going up probably around Hanukkah too, so have yourself a
- 1:30:24Speaker 11: happy whatever you're into. Otherwise, that about does it. We
- 1:30:27Speaker 11: will return next time. Same geek feed. Thanks for listening.
- 1:31:02Speaker 5: Jenny said when she was just five years old, there
- 1:31:05Speaker 5: was nothing happening at all. Every time she puts on
- 1:31:12Speaker 5: the radio, there was nothing going down at all.
- 1:31:17Speaker 16: Not at all.
- 1:31:20Speaker 5: Then one fine morning, she puts on a New York station.
- 1:31:23Speaker 5: You know, she don't believe what she heard at all.
- 1:31:29Speaker 5: She started shaking to that fine, fine music. You know
- 1:31:32Speaker 5: her life was saved by rock and roll.
- 1:31:37Speaker 6: Despite all the.
- 1:31:39Speaker 5: Amputations, you know you could just go out and dance
- 1:31:43Speaker 5: to the rock and roll station.
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: It was alright.
- 1:31:46Speaker 5: It was alright.
- 1:31:47Speaker 11: Hey baby, you know it was alright. It was alright.
- 1:32:07Speaker 5: Ginny said when she's just about five years old, you
- 1:32:10Speaker 5: know my pants are going to be the death of
- 1:32:12Speaker 5: us all.
- 1:32:16Speaker 11: Two TV sets and.
- 1:32:17Speaker 5: Two Cadillac cars, well, you know, ain't going to help
- 1:32:21Speaker 5: me at all. Nah, just a tiny bit. And one
- 1:32:25Speaker 5: fine morning, she turns on a New York station.
- 1:32:28Speaker 11: She doesn't believe.
- 1:32:29Speaker 5: What she hears at all. She started dancing to that fine,
- 1:32:36Speaker 5: fine music You know life is saved by rock and
- 1:32:39Speaker 5: roll Yeah, rock and roll Despite all the computation She
- 1:32:45Speaker 5: could just dance to that rock and roll station And baby,
- 1:32:49Speaker 5: it was all right Yeah, all right Hey, it was
- 1:32:54Speaker 5: all right Hey, here she comes now Like Ginny said
- 1:33:27Speaker 5: when she was just about five years old Hey, you know,
- 1:33:30Speaker 5: there's nothing happening at all Not at all Every time
- 1:33:37Speaker 5: I put on the radio You know there's nothing going
- 1:33:40Speaker 5: down at all.
- 1:33:45Speaker 11: One fine morning she is.
- 1:33:46Speaker 6: A new york station she doesn't believe.
- 1:33:49Speaker 5: What you heard at all hey not at all she's
- 1:33:54Speaker 5: told to dance to that music you know her life
- 1:33:58Speaker 5: is saved by rock and roll yes rock and roll
- 1:34:02Speaker 5: oh despite all the computation you know you.
- 1:34:06Speaker 6: Could just dance to a rock and roll station.
