- 0:00I'm Packers Fox Sports. I'm curious if you did you watch
- 0:02any of Kyle's testing Larson's Indy 500 testing earlier this
- 0:07week and or what type of advice you've given him?
- 0:10About that I didn't watch live, but I've checked in on social
- 0:13media and I saw that he had a good day and I'm certainly
- 0:17excited for him. I didn't talk to him before
- 0:20after that specific test, but before Phoenix.
- 0:22Maybe after Phoenix I talked to him.
- 0:24Just checking in to see what he thinks about the car and the
- 0:27experience, and looks like he's off to a good start.
- 0:30And what do you think will be his biggest challenge in doing
- 0:33the double? Double I mean getting back and
- 0:38forth, the stress and time commitment.
- 0:40I mean I I was really surprised how much time is required to get
- 0:46through the month of May which just a couple weeks of May it at
- 0:49the track in India itself. Thankfully the NASCAR schedule
- 0:53is much more relaxed and and I guess he has a week before
- 0:57racing to deal with as well. Yeah, I I think travel and and
- 1:01being able to spend the time that he'll want to spend in
- 1:03Indy, that's going to be you know compromised a little.
- 1:06And then it depends on weather in Indy and if if it's dry and
- 1:10he can get all the laps that he intends to to get, I think that
- 1:13will help him tremendously. If it's wet and he has some
- 1:16conflicts and can't be on track because of a NASCAR schedule,
- 1:19you know that that track time starts to shrink.
- 1:21And that's really what it's about is getting reps in the
- 1:23very unique situations that you see in the race practice.
- 1:28I personally didn't see the aero situations and the traffic
- 1:34situations that came about in the race and that's where I I
- 1:37wasn't as prepared as I would have liked to have been.
- 1:39Are we going to go back there and then up to Jeff Luck?
- 1:42Yeah, James Harris, Toyota's race week back here.
- 1:46Jimmy it the sports changed quite a bit since you stopped
- 1:51racing full time. You know the playoff system, now
- 1:55that we have maybe geared a little bit towards stopping
- 2:00somebody like yourself from dominating for so long, trying
- 2:04to strike a competitive balance in the sport, kind of like F1 is
- 2:07sort of going through the same thing with the competitive
- 2:09balance. Is that been good for the the
- 2:11health of the sport from your perspective as to how they've
- 2:14changed things since you were on that dominant run that you had?
- 2:19Be hard for me not to say that the way I won the majority of my
- 2:23championships is the best way. You know statistically there's a
- 2:28lot of evidence that supports the changes we've made and and
- 2:32where it is. The generation I think anyone
- 2:35grows up in is the generation that they they love the most.
- 2:39And I I think our fan base you know we're always trying to find
- 2:42new fans but I I think in time we'll we'll know the true
- 2:46opinion of the new fans that we're gathering and and what
- 2:48they think of it. So I think what we live and
- 2:51experience right now is the older generation in their
- 2:54opinion and then balancing that against statistics.
- 2:57So I don't know if I have a great answer.
- 2:59I I kind of prefer, I'd say I I prefer the playoffs where the 10
- 3:05races, the point still totaled up to a champion.
- 3:07I felt that was a good representation of both.
- 3:10That's not the world that we're in now, but I I personally like
- 3:13that variation the most. What What are some of the
- 3:19memories that pop into your mind first when you come back here?
- 3:21Of all the success you've had one of your best tracks, what
- 3:24what are you thinking of when you roll through the tunnel?
- 3:28It's funny now, the way the place drives, I just have a lot
- 3:32of anxiety about turns one and two.
- 3:34And the previous configuration that was really the most fun
- 3:38that you could have on a mile and 1/2 was turns one and two.
- 3:42So bummed that it's it's still not there, but it didn't, you
- 3:44know, same for everybody as what it is.
- 3:47But the track you know in in where I've had most of my
- 3:50success and the fact that you could run from line to wall the
- 3:54bumps were in the worst places possible.
- 3:58But that was great. They they created mistakes for
- 4:00the the drivers and technical challenge for the teams.
- 4:03I I thought made it a really really race to racetrack.
- 4:06So I I've recently rewatched the battle with Kenseth.
- 4:11We suckered Matt to come into our come into the shop and and
- 4:16relive that and I guess I'm not sure if it's out yet.
- 4:19It'll come out on social and just reliving those moments and
- 4:23just how racy the track was. And of course I came out on top
- 4:25of Matt and love to give him trouble over that.
- 4:27But yeah, I really miss the that old circuit.
- 4:32It was a lot of fun all. Right.
- 4:33We're going to go right up here to the right.
- 4:36Tadhazelnascar.com Jimmy Kind of piggybacking on that.
- 4:39Regarding your success you've had here in the past, clearly it
- 4:42implies you had at least some level of comfort at this track
- 4:45with the new car. Is all of that out the window,
- 4:48or is there still some level of comfort?
- 4:51No, I I found last year with the limited races I ran it, it is
- 4:56really really different. I I think the 1st 80% is is
- 5:02normal but maybe 90% but that last little bit and where you
- 5:05run the car and I spent a a lifetime running a car off the
- 5:09right rear and this car you just cannot do that from the aero
- 5:13platform the the tire and the the I believe the the side wall
- 5:18stiffness of the tire you can't slip and slide this car around
- 5:22like I'd like to do and it it got me in Charlotte the last
- 5:25mile and a half I was on in Charlotte got out from under me
- 5:28and I crashed. So I keep telling myself coming
- 5:32in this weekend that I need to drive it off the right front and
- 5:34you drive through the right front and not my typical style
- 5:37of of driving on or through the right rear tire.
- 5:40So those tracks very treacherous and it's nice to see it widening
- 5:44out. I think last night with the
- 5:45truck race had some reports back to how the second groove was
- 5:49coming in and and hopefully we're on the right pathway now
- 5:51to to really start working in the middle of the track and can
- 5:54widen this place out and just just go have some fun.
- 5:58I mean I I of course want to run as well as I can.
- 6:02I want to run all the laps and I want to be able to help our
- 6:04company grow and really kind of work through this first quarter,
- 6:08first half of the season with our change of Toyota.
- 6:11There's just a lot of new things for us that we're trying to get
- 6:13our arms around and trying to know we've had some speed at
- 6:17times. But consistently having the
- 6:19speed is is a big objective for us right now and I hope that my
- 6:23participation this weekend helps us take a step in that direction
- 6:26all. Right.
- 6:26We're going to go right up here and then to Jeff and then to
- 6:29Jerry. Eric Ceda, Eric Cerrita Game Day
- 6:31Productions So you're driving a Toyota now.
- 6:33How does it feel? What are your impressions about
- 6:35it? I don't have a lot of time
- 6:37behind the wheel, but I've really enjoyed the relationship
- 6:39with everyone from TRD and Toyota North America.
- 6:43They race in a different way that they have very meaningful
- 6:47relationships and and I'd call them part, you know the true
- 6:49definition of a partnership. So I've I've enjoyed really the
- 6:53last two years of getting to know them in the last, I don't
- 6:56know, six or seven months of really working hand in hand with
- 6:59them since the end of last season.
- 7:01And I think we have a very long and bright future together.
- 7:04I'm very excited to work with them.
- 7:07Jeff. So back to Larson for a second.
- 7:10Is there any way to describe to people the difficulty level of
- 7:13what he's trying to do in in going to win that race?
- 7:16I mean you've you've obviously been on both sides of that most,
- 7:20most people haven't. Can you describe that?
- 7:23Yeah, I and I can only speak from the experience that I had
- 7:28practice qualifying, if you can get your arms around that and
- 7:33safely find the edge. But when it comes race time and
- 7:37you're dealing with guys that drive those cars day in and day
- 7:41out and know how to Just Dance on that edge, it's tough and the
- 7:46cars are a much bigger arrow, disadvantage deeper in traffic.
- 7:50Unfortunately, we lost some track position trying to short
- 7:53pit and trying to gain track position in the race and we
- 7:57never got it back. And I ran back in the 20s and
- 7:59you just, you just can't go anywhere from back there.
- 8:01So if they're able to maintain track position to keep him up
- 8:05front, I I think you'll have a a really good day.
- 8:08And I think Kurt's experience, you know, really showed that if
- 8:11you can keep clean air on the car, I think it it helps the
- 8:16lack of experience that a stock guard driver would have going
- 8:19in. Thankfully you do get a fair
- 8:21amount of laps with the open test session and the way the two
- 8:24weeks unfold you do get a lot of laps and in that environment
- 8:28with some air on the car, you can get a sense for it.
- 8:32But come race day, I mean, you don't want to put in the fence
- 8:35and oh, by the wall. Oh, by the way, that wall hurts
- 8:38in an IndyCar. I mean it.
- 8:40There really are consequences for your mistakes made in an
- 8:43IndyCar. We're.
- 8:45Going to go to Jerry and then Steven.
- 8:48Jerry Jordan kicking thetires.net.
- 8:50Jimmy is a team owner and the driver as well in the
- 8:53negotiations going on with NASCAR, it seems in speaking
- 8:55with some of the drivers they have a few different issues that
- 8:58they're they're talking to NASCAR about then then maybe the
- 9:01the team owners are your thoughts on what any of the
- 9:05those negotiations are like and and you know from from both
- 9:08perspectives for for drivers and owners.
- 9:12It's been a long road and I still think there's plenty of
- 9:14Rd. left for all sides and if it's drivers negotiating what
- 9:18they would like to see team owners and then certainly on
- 9:21NASCAR side and and what they're what they want to see for the
- 9:24future of the sport. And I think it's going to come
- 9:27down to deep in the year when you know everybody has to and
- 9:33right now it's still posturing. I I know we feel like the clock
- 9:35is ticking, but if you look at how much time is left, we're
- 9:39just getting into the probably 8th inning, maybe 9th inning of
- 9:43of what really needs to happen in negotiations for all parties.
- 9:46Is it as much a money thing or maybe an insurance thing or a or
- 9:50a competition thing? Where?
- 9:52Where are some of those areas that you you think might be hang
- 9:55ups? The drivers probably have a
- 9:59different lens they're looking through than the owners.
- 10:04But to still a Mr. Hendrick line, it's not about the money
- 10:08until it's about the money. And so ultimately if there are
- 10:13protections I think that team owners are looking for for
- 10:15longevity that absolutely sure things up for them financially.
- 10:20I'm sure there's discussions around monies that come on the
- 10:24front side through the the TV partnership that that are
- 10:27important. You know, it's it's been
- 10:31interesting to watch. You know, this is my first time
- 10:34really in this world as a team owner and I've done a lot more
- 10:37listening than I have have talking and and letting the pros
- 10:40really do their job. But what's ultimately been most
- 10:44impressive to me is just how the team ownership group has stuck
- 10:47together. And I I think we're a lot
- 10:49stronger as a unified group carrying a consistent message
- 10:53and then that's something that's been more difficult for owners
- 10:55in the past. But the ownership group's been
- 10:58very committed to that and I I think that's been very useful.
- 11:01Steven. Steven stumfriendships.com,
- 11:04right? Here.
- 11:06Sorry. You're good Jimmy.
- 11:09It wasn't really till COVID that we kind of began this you know
- 11:12process of trying to truncated practice session smaller ones
- 11:14maybe 1 instead of two. It wasn't you can't you for all
- 11:18your career until 2020. You you had the, you know, the
- 11:21experiences of doing multiple practices per weekend.
- 11:23Usually, given you know how different this new car is, is is
- 11:30kind of having those larger practice sessions something you
- 11:32wish that could return? Yeah, without a doubt.
- 11:35I mean the practices are not long enough to make a meaningful
- 11:38change to the car and it's tough to develop and and I certainly
- 11:44understand and appreciate the effort for for cost savings,
- 11:49we're not going to sit still. You know, now we've put so much
- 11:53reliance on our simulation and what's tricky with simulation is
- 11:59trying to feed the pipeline of data and the pipeline of
- 12:03information so that your simulation works correctly and
- 12:07crosses over the real world and then the simulator that you
- 12:09drive crosses over the real world.
- 12:12And you know it's just really tough with how little track time
- 12:18there is for all teams to benefit that because as you
- 12:22unload that, that's what you have.
- 12:24And so the bigger teams with more resources and really
- 12:31resources far and wide to unload on is is where it's at.
- 12:36And it and it affects the smaller teams that are trying to
- 12:40that don't have the access that they need that are trying to
- 12:43feed their pipeline and make good decisions.
- 12:45It it just continues to make that a more challenging dynamic.
- 12:49And then you think of new teams, new drivers, you know, there's
- 12:52just a lot of layers there that I think more track time would
- 12:54benefit and it doesn't need to be like it once was where you
- 12:57have 4 hours of track time but double the track time that we
- 13:02have now. If it was 40 minutes, 45
- 13:03minutes, I I think you could, you know, really help the the
- 13:07field in its entirety be more efficient with their spending
- 13:12because right now it's man, you're just throwing darts,
- 13:15hoping you're spending in the right way and different things.
- 13:18And then after running four races of Legacy, so, so far,
- 13:20you're going to begin to, you're going to begin having four races
- 13:23in the next six weeks. In terms of learning this car,
- 13:26you know how important is it to be, you know, not doing this
- 13:29many races, but also having them relatively in a quick time span
- 13:32to kind of get familiar with it. Yeah, super helpful.
- 13:35You know, last year I intended to rent, run more events and you
- 13:39know, the unfortunate tragedy that our family experienced it,
- 13:41it put the brakes on that as as it should have.
- 13:45But to come back this year, you know again on last year's agenda
- 13:49was much more Rd. course focused, trying to help our
- 13:52program be a bit stronger on road courses.
- 13:55We've we've shifted this year for a variety of reasons to run
- 13:58more mile and a halfs and you know the bulk of my schedule is
- 14:02mile and a halfs. And so to have them in close
- 14:05proximity to one another and then to be able to go back to
- 14:08Kansas twice, you know, I really think it's going to help me
- 14:12extract the most that I can out of the car, help me give the
- 14:15best feedback that I can to my organization and and
- 14:18directionally help us grow. Yep.
- 14:22Back up here. Eric Serita Game day Which up
- 14:25and coming driver do you believe has the brightest future?
- 14:28John Hunter Nemechek, Do you expect anything else?
- 14:33No. In addition to that, you know
- 14:36it's I haven't watched the Support Series races as closely
- 14:41the last couple of years in IndyCar and sports car racing.
- 14:45But to see the young crop of of truck drivers last night duking
- 14:48it out was was impressive. And even the Xfinity field,
- 14:51there's there's some young talent there and new faces, at
- 14:53least new for me watching because I've been removed for a
- 14:55few years and just impressed. It looks like there's some
- 14:59really hungry and talented talent coming up through the
- 15:02pipeline. We will take our final question
- 15:04here with Jeff. I want to ask you about Dover.
- 15:07Obviously Texas has changed since a lot of your wins, but
- 15:11Dover, same place. I know it's a different car, but
- 15:13what's your level of optimism going there?
- 15:16I ran it in the SIM on Thursday and it drives a lot different.
- 15:20I don't know how accurate that will be in real life, but you
- 15:25know given the opportunity to pick a track to go back to, I
- 15:27was like this is easy going to Dover.
- 15:30I love the area, I love the track and it's certainly hopeful
- 15:33that it leads to a a competitive performance.
- 15:35But I I'm anticipating it's going to be quite different.
- 15:39And part of my success at Dover was what I was touching on
- 15:42earlier and just driving a really loose race car and and
- 15:45driving it with my right foot. You can't do that with this car,
- 15:48the diffuser and the sidewall, the tire and everything.
- 15:50That's with it. So I assume I'll have a steep
- 15:53learning curve. We're actually going to take one
- 15:55final one from Lee up right up here.
- 15:57Lee, Spencer Series, XM, NASCAR Radio and catchments.com.
- 16:00Just curious. Do you have aspirations of
- 16:03expanding Legacy to four cars at some point I would do three
- 16:10first and then 4-4 would be quite the commitment.
- 16:15We we don't have any plans to now that that is not part of our
- 16:18objective in time. I understand the benefits that
- 16:24come with three cars, 4 cars and the scaling that comes with
- 16:27that. So from a business proposition
- 16:30standpoint, yes, I would be open to it, but we're we're not in
- 16:32that position now and we, we need to make sure our 2 1/2 cars
- 16:36are running the best of our abilities that are paint.
- 16:41You know, our our cars are full of sponsorship and that all
- 16:45those economic markers are in place before that expansion
- 16:47would happen. Yep.
- 16:49All right. Thanks for the time, Jimmy, and
- 16:51good luck this weekend. I appreciate it.
- 16:52And real quick, one last thing. We have a a new partnership that
- 16:55I wanted to bring to everyone's attention and offer you some
- 16:59free lollipop over at the Transporter.
- 17:01So swing on by and enjoy. Thanks.
