- 0:48Here is bonus material. There, if you bump that table,
- 0:52that's my fault. Oh wow, the whole production
- 0:54just dies right there. I can't be too aggressive.
- 0:57Let's start the production. Introduce yourself up.
- 1:00There I'm Greg Schmidt, head coach, cross country, track and
- 1:03field, University of Bridgeport. And you're a brand new, we can
- 1:07still say that, right like. I, I, I like to say it, I think
- 1:10until you get to about five years in, you're easily, easily.
- 1:14Easily. So how has it been going?
- 1:15We kind of a little bit followed along the journey.
- 1:18You'll be on the podcast here last year and now this year.
- 1:22How is that process going? It's going pretty well.
- 1:25I mean really the first couple years has been educating the
- 1:30university about the sport, track and field.
- 1:32A lot of people in university, they, they just admit to me,
- 1:35we're we're kind of relying on you to tell us what the sport is
- 1:39about more than anything else. No, no, they don't.
- 1:42And it's nothing against them. It's just they're not, they're
- 1:44not experienced with it. Not only that, just getting the
- 1:47word out to the different high schools, getting to the
- 1:50different, you know, people in the Connecticut area that UB
- 1:54has. I'm going to.
- 1:56I know you're me though. You're you're a.
- 1:58Sicilian, I talk with my hands. What do you want from me?
- 2:00But yeah, just getting the word out that we actually have a
- 2:02track and field program, so they kind of understand.
- 2:04That yeah, yeah. So how's it going?
- 2:06It's going pretty well when? You start with zero.
- 2:08It's it's, you could put your finger, you're not taking over
- 2:11any baggage and things like that, but you're starting at 0.
- 2:16How's that been? Going It's going pretty well,
- 2:18especially this recruiting class I had coming in.
- 2:21The kids bought in from day one. You know, I have kids from, you
- 2:25know, IMG in Florida and I don't know if I'm allowed to name any
- 2:28names on the. Podcast.
- 2:29Well, it's live, so. Yeah, so I just said he just did
- 2:32it, whatever. But you know, they bought it
- 2:35from day one. They've been working hard and
- 2:36they bought in and they're they're helping me establish it.
- 2:39And that's, that's kind of what you need.
- 2:42And that's nothing against my first recruiting class
- 2:44whatsoever. It's just this group came in
- 2:46like ready to help me out and I, I really appreciate that.
- 2:50Why should I? You know, kids out there, it's
- 2:52quite amazing, have a lot of choices, right?
- 2:55And it's easier today, in 2023, to find out about those
- 3:00different schools and programs. You.
- 3:02You're in a unique situation that you have this blank slate
- 3:06or you know you're writing the first sentence paragraph of your
- 3:09slate. Why should a kid choose you and
- 3:12bridge? For me, it's more I I don't want
- 3:17to go to a long spiel. That's why I kind of paused for
- 3:19a second. But I always tell athletes
- 3:21there's three things to look for when you pick a university.
- 3:24So I I see this in every recruitment and all that.
- 3:27Number one, do they have your degree?
- 3:30Because I've coached humble brag.
- 3:32I've coached, you know, at least 5 athletes in the top ten in the
- 3:35United States in the United States Championships.
- 3:37None of us are millionaires. Wait, Amy, go check my bank
- 3:41account. I thought you told me something
- 3:42different. So.
- 3:44So you don't get rich from track and field unless you're #1 some
- 3:47#2 something like that. And there's there's only one.
- 3:50Order, right? So you, you have to have that
- 3:52degree to get a job. Even if you move forward, even
- 3:55if you're continuing to train for Olympic trials, you have to
- 3:57have that degree #2 is who specifically is going to coach
- 4:02you? And what I mean by that is
- 4:05there's colleges that don't have a big staff.
- 4:07And what they do is they will recruit athletes just so they
- 4:11get those points at a conference meet, but they might not have
- 4:14the people who are able to help them reach the potential, right?
- 4:17And then #3 is just the eye test.
- 4:20Is this a nice area for me to live for five years, four years,
- 4:23whatever your. Degree is.
- 4:24Required. So for me, I say, you know, we
- 4:27have great programs in terms of Health, Science, engineering,
- 4:30things like that. I don't like to talk about
- 4:33myself too much, but I've had success in a variety of event
- 4:36areas. You're getting a fist bump
- 4:37breakout. So I I know what I can do as a
- 4:41coach. So for me, it's more about the
- 4:44athletes and athletes sometimes are a little bit mystified that
- 4:48I tell them if they're choosing another college, Hey, it's it's
- 4:53tough choosing a college when a senior at meets come talk to me,
- 4:56say hi. I hope you do well and I'm
- 4:58amazed right here that there's some coaches that get angry at
- 5:01them. We don't choose them.
- 5:02I can't get every athlete ever. There's not no way to do that.
- 5:05It's about finding the fit. So I will never be upset with
- 5:08athlete finding a better fit than.
- 5:11You know, I think every coach would say I'm doing it for the
- 5:14kids and then we do things. It's like, wait, I thought you
- 5:17were doing it for the kids. Wait, you you're, you're mad at
- 5:19that kid for choosing what they're making the best decision
- 5:21they can at 18 years old. By the way, I thought you were
- 5:24doing for the kids. You know what I'm saying?
- 5:25It's always we got. To be careful.
- 5:26It's insecure, yeah. It doesn't make you less of a
- 5:29coach because we can't. Be careful with the truth like
- 5:33that. That's exactly right.
- 5:34It's. Insecure and I was and we talked
- 5:37about this when I was on the podcast, which you can download
- 5:39on. Spotify, iTunes.
- 5:41Pandora Stitcher. All of that, it's like this is
- 5:45my marketing department. A little promo, but I talked
- 5:48about that when I was a young coach.
- 5:49I was insecure also, and that's where I kind of let my anger
- 5:52take over and it's about realizing that and kind of
- 5:56getting through that of it's not about me.
- 5:58It's without helping student athletes.
- 5:59You know, that's a really good point.
- 6:00You know, I definitely think about today, you know, I started
- 6:03to stop. Watch On Me.
- 6:03No, no, I stopped it every 5 minutes.
- 6:06When we start wrapping up, you know, we talk about kids and
- 6:09their development and coaches and their development and you
- 6:12know, I didn't think about that. I coached for 10 years and I
- 6:14think about my first year of coaching to my 10th year and
- 6:17luckily I progressed not just coaching education, exes and OS,
- 6:20but how I interacted with kids and parents and ears and things
- 6:24like that. It's really it's.
- 6:25Important and it and it makes me upset when I think about the
- 6:27times that I got upset and I made it more about me yeah like
- 6:31getting angry and. That's usually the problem.
- 6:33Right. And, and I, I think about the
- 6:35athletes that remember things from years ago, years ago,
- 6:39they're going to remember that for the rest of their lives.
- 6:40And I don't want to leave that bad impression.
- 6:42So I always think about that in my head.
- 6:43Well, let's leave tonight with a good impression.
- 6:45I've got 100 random questions. I know the last time you asked
- 6:48me about my stand up comedy and I got a little bit.
- 6:50Upset I didn't go there. I didn't do that.
- 6:52I was like this close and then you started dropping tooth bombs
- 6:55as I got done 100 questions. You get the pick number.
- 6:58I just asked the question 8. Why?
- 7:01Because that was one of my hockey numbers all.
- 7:03Right cat and mouse. Who was the real bad guy, Tom or
- 7:07Jerry? Number. 40.
- 7:11Seven I've never watched. I've never watched Tom and
- 7:14Jerry. As a kid, I was a Looney Tunes,
- 7:16Bugs Bunny, Yosemite Sam. I, Tom and Jerry was just And
- 7:21then they had that weird period where Tom talked.
- 7:24Yeah. There was like a one year period
- 7:26where Tom talked. I don't really get that.
- 7:29Well, instead of asking #47 because we were on the podcast
- 7:33last year, your Guild podcast environment last year, it's
- 7:36getting to where now, I don't know, we're, we're starting the
- 7:39fifth season in January. That's crazy to me.
- 7:42I don't know why that never registered when I started back
- 7:44in 2020 doing this. But because you were on the
- 7:47podcaster podcast, you get to put the script, You get to ask
- 7:50me one question live. Right here.
- 7:55OK, aside from this and aside from talking to the coaches,
- 8:00what do you enjoy the most about the convention?
- 8:05And I know I threw 2 weird caveats in there.
- 8:07That's that's the main thing. There's got to be a memory that
- 8:11pops out. I call this.
- 8:12My Super Bowl, you know, I, I, I joke with the team, every team
- 8:17that we bring. Here that.
- 8:19You know, as we're walking through the hallway to come to
- 8:21our booth, I will have to catch up.
- 8:23I'm pulled over here. I'm pulled over.
- 8:25You know, even tonight in the podcast, people are coming over
- 8:27and I'm like, no, we're reporting.
- 8:28We're here. I just love it, you know,
- 8:32because I get to see you not at a track beat, stressed out,
- 8:36doing a million things that you do.
- 8:39So you're asking what else? OK, you know, well, you know
- 8:41what, you know what? We don't have to go there.
- 8:42We, we, we can just say. We can just say that just
- 8:44because I got an. Answer so you know, I don't do
- 8:49what I do and we at Gill don't do what we do without coaches
- 8:53and a caveat of that in in addition to that, I should say
- 8:56is the vast, vast bulk of our equipment sold through.
- 9:01And so here at this convention we've got MF athletics.
- 9:05They're a great partner of ours so a ton of fuel equipment VS
- 9:09athletics on track athletics and of course we work with Mondo and
- 9:13Byman as well. You know, so seeing these guys
- 9:17and gals that every day are going into every high school and
- 9:20every college and they're representing Gil athletics
- 9:23because what they're doing, they're representing my favorite
- 9:25people, my teammates, you know, those guys and gals that are
- 9:28welding this stuff, painting this stuff, accounting.
- 9:32I mean, I, I dearly, dearly love the people I work with.
- 9:38And so all these dealers, coaches, you guys are kind of
- 9:41supporting them putting. I was like, I don't know why I
- 9:44use this example, putting turkeys on their table at
- 9:46Thanksgiving. That means the world.
- 9:49And, and like you said, I mean, for me, I, I was thinking about
- 9:51it earlier before I walked down here.
- 9:53I I was in a committee meeting with George Williams.
- 9:56Who? For me it's on not only have.
- 9:57You noticed George has now come up, I think, three times.
- 10:01Take that as a hint. Go listen to his episode.
- 10:06It it. I'm not overstating when I say
- 10:08it changed my life when he talks about if you're not in the
- 10:11huddle, you don't want to play. It will change your life about
- 10:15judgment of others in all aspects of your life.
- 10:18You're driving in the car and traffic to looking at fellow
- 10:22coaches. It's, you know, I never want to
- 10:26turn the camera on 'cause I can't show you the rudeness that
- 10:28comes up there. I interrupted you, but.
- 10:30Don't listen to that. And, and well, so I was in the
- 10:33committee meeting with him and we walk out and Jim Sprecher,
- 10:36who is here as well, Lynchburg, and I'm a Lynchburg and alumni.
- 10:39Podcast along with. Yeah, we, we were talking for a
- 10:41little while and George pops up after the meeting and we're
- 10:44talking and Jim goes, hey, this is no, this is Greg and George.
- 10:48No, I know. I've known Greg because we've
- 10:49talked for. Years.
- 10:51And I'm like, think about any other sport where a coach who
- 10:55not only the, the Mount Rushmore tracking, the Mount Rushmore
- 10:58athletics, if you ask me, because who else has 39 team
- 11:03national championships and all the things he has.
- 11:05And for me, that's the best thing about convention is the
- 11:09best coaches here have no ego. They will work with everybody.
- 11:12And for me to to have people like that know my name, respect
- 11:16me and talk to me as I'm speaking with them.
- 11:17And I'm getting emotional thinking about it just because
- 11:20that's what this is about. And that's why I appreciate what
- 11:23you do. I appreciate you bringing it to
- 11:25the water. You deserve it, yeah, and you
- 11:27also deserve only for people who are sitting down on custom Guild
- 11:31Connections podcast Christmas order.
- 11:33Look at the ornament he gave me. I don't know if this will fit in
- 11:36my pocket. Thanks, Mike.
- 11:39I'll talk to you soon. I appreciate you.
- 11:41There's no bigger job than being a track coach.
- 11:44The positive impact that you make on on young people today is
- 11:50it's immeasurable. It's immeasurable.
- 11:56You know, I really want to have a conversation with you of why
- 11:59the guy that should be at the Bowerman, your former lead is
- 12:04not here. Cordell Tench, baby, that's the
- 12:11conversation I want to have. Why the best and we're not
- 12:14talking. I'm not putting down a Leo and a
- 12:16Jayden and I'm not putting them down.
- 12:20Why is cordial tension out there?
- 12:24I don't do much offline. I do it online, baby.
- 12:28All right, let's start. You have to speak up a little
- 12:31bit.
