- 0:05And it is time to go lights out with the president of Nashville
- 0:08Superspeedway, Matt Gricci. Matt, thank you so much for
- 0:11joining us. I know this is a hugely busy
- 0:13time for you. We're only a couple weeks away
- 0:16from the big event. But but looking back on this
- 0:18thing, Nashville and racing right now just seems to be going
- 0:22so well together. And it seems like year after
- 0:25year, this event is getting better and better.
- 0:27Although it's young, it just keeps building.
- 0:30It is young. I think this is one place that
- 0:34everybody wants to be in and come visit.
- 0:36And we're we're super thankful that we're here and heading into
- 0:39our fifth annual NASCAR Triple Header weekend and it's going to
- 0:43be an enjoyable week. We are.
- 0:46We're two weeks away from welcoming campers onto property
- 0:49here at Nashville Superspeedway, and we couldn't be more joyed.
- 0:53You know, Matt, when people go out on a racetrack, they have a
- 0:56barometer that's there and that's the stopwatch.
- 0:58You can see how fast you run. And that's the that's the the
- 1:02standard by which they're judged.
- 1:04When you're a promoter and you're trying to put a race on,
- 1:07I think the standards is how many people that not only come
- 1:10there the first time, but come back.
- 1:12And you guys have had a return crowd at Nashville.
- 1:15You've had a huge crowd at Nashville and this place has
- 1:18been packed that that's got to be a really good feeling for you
- 1:21guys knowing that you're putting out a good product.
- 1:24Really is I think you know, the entertainment aspect on the
- 1:27racetrack has been phenomenal. But coming into the market of
- 1:30Nashville is that people want to visit here and it's an enjoyable
- 1:33place to to come visit. Whether you just looking to see
- 1:36some great racing on our mile on 1/3 concrete surface or come
- 1:39visit Nashville for all that it has in Middle Tennessee.
- 1:42And it's a great music scene at obviously, but good arts, good,
- 1:47good food scene and just an enjoyable place to come visit.
- 1:50And yeah, we see repeat customers across the across the
- 1:53nation, but we get visitors from multiple countries as well.
- 1:58And it's great to welcome everybody here to Nashville
- 2:00Superspeedway. Also, I think one of the better
- 2:03stories about this whole thing, Matt, is the fact that this
- 2:05Speedway basically went away for a while.
- 2:08It was active with some of NASCAR's different series, Cup
- 2:12Series wasn't here. But now it gets revitalized.
- 2:15It comes back, kind of grows back up out of the out of the
- 2:18ground again. That's got it.
- 2:21I think it adds a little bit of, well, uniqueness to the
- 2:24racetrack, but also it lets us know never say never.
- 2:27In NASCAR, a track may be idle, but it certainly can come back.
- 2:32Yeah, I think you're seeing that at a couple different places of
- 2:34resurgence. And yeah, this place was built
- 2:37in 2001 with the grand idea of getting a NASCAR Cup Series race
- 2:41here. And they operated really solid,
- 2:44tremendous events for 10 years. And you know, 2011 it shut down
- 2:49but came back online, then hosted its first ever NASCAR Cup
- 2:52Series race on in 2021. And it's great to see.
- 2:57I think the team here is proud. Yes, we are.
- 2:59We are young heading into only our fifth year, but see a
- 3:02resurgence and how the the NASCAR scene is picked up here
- 3:06in, in Middle Tennessee and Nashville.
- 3:09We're we're super proud. So what was the story like for
- 3:12you, Matt? How did this come about?
- 3:14I know the the first time you and I met, you're an intern in
- 3:17Charlotte and here you are now the president of a racetrack.
- 3:21There's, I would imagine there'd be a great story behind that as
- 3:24to how this whole thing developed for you personally.
- 3:27And now to be the youngest track president and all in NASCAR.
- 3:31Speaking of things aging, yes, an intern team decades ago and
- 3:36it has been, but I've had a great, great experience here at
- 3:41Speedway Motorsports. And that's where I started as an
- 3:43intern at Charlotte Motor Speedway, as you alluded to,
- 3:45John. And I was was grateful for the
- 3:48opportunities that I, I got coming up through the, the ranks
- 3:51and the experience that I was able to gain at Charlotte Motor
- 3:55Speedway. And just the the sheer amount of
- 3:57events that they're on and the, the to the tier and expertise
- 4:00that it's run. And then when Speedo Motorsports
- 4:03had had the opportunity to purchase this venue, Marcus
- 4:07Smith was gracious and offered me the opportunity to come over
- 4:10here and join the team at National Superspeedway and bring
- 4:14some Speedway Motorsports experience and, and, and
- 4:17lifeblood into this this venue and couldn't be more proud.
- 4:20I think our, my family loves living here in, in this area of
- 4:23the country and I'm enjoying being a part of the team here
- 4:28and everything that we get to execute an experience.
- 4:31And again, just grateful for the opportunity of being with with
- 4:34Speedway Motorsports and then into the role here at general
- 4:37manager at Nashville Superspeedway.
- 4:39And so Matt, I know as we're talking about age here, Marcus
- 4:43was a very young man when I started hanging out at Charlotte
- 4:46Motor Speedway. But his dad Bruton was
- 4:48absolutely fantastic, just the epitome of a promoter.
- 4:52And I love the attitude that Marcus has now and all you guys
- 4:56around him at SMI is that never say never in NASCAR.
- 5:01Bruton got was told you you can't light up a racetrack.
- 5:04Well, what did he do? He he lit up a racetrack.
- 5:07They were told you can't have condominiums at a racetrack.
- 5:10What they do, they build condominiums.
- 5:11You can't have Astroturf in the infield.
- 5:14Guess what? Now we have Astroturf in the
- 5:16infield places. Is it, is it a really great
- 5:19thing for you running one of these venues to know that people
- 5:23above you are having that kind of attitude?
- 5:26Don't ever say we can't. Yeah, I mean, Bruton is a a
- 5:31pioneer and obviously a Hall of Famer in in Motorsports and
- 5:35NASCAR. And yes, never say never.
- 5:38I think the ideas and that's the great thing about this company
- 5:40is that we're willing to try new things and you know what, what
- 5:44will stick, but give it a go. We want to we want to do it for
- 5:47the fans and the experience is is paramount to us as a company
- 5:50and how those fans experience their a race weekend.
- 5:53And you know, Marcus Smith and the entire Smith family are just
- 5:57great ambassadors and leaders of the sport.
- 6:01And you've seen it with Marcus even in the short term in this
- 6:04past couple years, bringing North Wilkesboro back online and
- 6:08trying out the role at Charlotte Motor Speedway as a company.
- 6:11And we're not afraid to push the limits if we think it's going to
- 6:15be a, a better experience for the fans.
- 6:16And that's, that's the, that's the support we get as being able
- 6:20to sit in this seat as general manager.
- 6:23If we have ideas that are a little bit outside the box,
- 6:25well, they might be really inside the box as a company.
- 6:28And if we're willing to push the limits and make sure that we're
- 6:31we're focused on the fan, fan experience.
- 6:34So Nashville Superspeedway is certainly very popular right now
- 6:37with the race fans, but also there's the, there's the matter
- 6:39of the fairgrounds SMII feel again.
- 6:43And, and you know, Full disclosure here, I'm a Nashville
- 6:45resident too, maybe a little bit biased, Matt, but I think if you
- 6:49could, if you could offer the race fan 2 opportunities
- 6:53throughout the course of the year.
- 6:54You come, you see superspeedway racing and then you come back at
- 6:57a different time in the schedule and you see the fairgrounds
- 7:00revitalize. The way that SMI has has
- 7:04promoted has proposed to do this.
- 7:08Would it be a win win situation do you think, for both venues?
- 7:14As fast as Nashville is growing and it continues to grow, and
- 7:17then even as folks that just want to visit this great area of
- 7:22the country, yeah, I think it's sustainable.
- 7:24We believe it. And it's so easy to get here
- 7:26from major metros in this side of the country and there's such
- 7:31a hotbed of Motorsports enthusiasts that you get to come
- 7:34to a market twice a year, but maybe operate that at two
- 7:38different race tracks is a unique thing that nowhere else
- 7:41in the country is is doing that. So I think it's something Speedo
- 7:45Motorsports and Jerry Caldwell's continue to to engage on and
- 7:50work towards. And you know, we're we're still
- 7:52hopeful there, but we're again very thankful that we've got
- 7:57this tremendous venue here at Nashville Super Speedway there
- 7:59we can guarantee we're continuing to race on and we're
- 8:03looking forward to in a couple weeks.
- 8:05So one thing also I I certainly am looking forward to is coming
- 8:09up you guys have your kickoff party fast cars and guitars.
- 8:13Two things we're all very proud of around here.
- 8:16You guys for your Speedway Children's Charity chapter are
- 8:20putting on an event that I think it's going to be spectacular and
- 8:23can't wait to go to where people in this area really from
- 8:27anywhere around the country have an opportunity to come here and
- 8:31race against some of the best in the business that Chris Buscher,
- 8:34Josh Berry, who's from Hendersonville, TN when Nick
- 8:37Sanchez, what an opportunity for someone to come here.
- 8:40And I think Matt, it really goes to the total experience, the
- 8:44whole experience that someone can have not just coming to an
- 8:48area on a race weekend, but also having the opportunity to do
- 8:52other things in and around the area and also here to benefit
- 8:56the children's charity. You have an opportunity to race
- 8:59against some of the best in the biz on the simulators.
- 9:01You're right, it's a, it's a race weekend here at National
- 9:04Superspeedway, but it's really a race week and you know, we'll
- 9:07start programming and be engaged fully into the market.
- 9:11And we are really excited about this Speedway Children's
- 9:15Charities, Guitars and fast Cars event that we're doing on
- 9:18Wednesday, May 28th. It's over at Portium 1A short
- 9:22drive from us here and close to downtown Nashville.
- 9:25They've been a great partner for us to set up some racing
- 9:28simulators and get these active drivers, as you mentioned,
- 9:31Chris, Josh and Nick into there and we're working on some more,
- 9:35but it's going to be a great event for us to raise funds, you
- 9:39know, mention Speedway Motorsports.
- 9:41Speedway Children's Charities is our giving arm.
- 9:43It's our opportunity to give back to each of our local
- 9:47communities. So anything that we are raising
- 9:49through our chapter here at National Superspeedway, it's
- 9:52going to stay right here in the market, it's going to stay in
- 9:54Middle Tennessee and it's going to support children and families
- 9:57in need. Along those same lines, Matt, I
- 10:01think when, you know, people can say in racing, they can say,
- 10:04hey, we support you or think you're doing a great thing.
- 10:07But when they put their money where their mouth is, just a
- 10:10couple weeks ago, you and I were both at this announcement that
- 10:14was absolutely fantastic that you guys have a partner in
- 10:17Cracker Barrel. Now this is the Cracker Barrel
- 10:20race. That name is on here and it's a
- 10:21it's a nationwide brand that people associate with.
- 10:25But for a big company like that, yeah, again, it's great to have
- 10:28big crowds. That's one thing.
- 10:30But boy, when someone is willing to invest and we must say a
- 10:34bunch of coin into this thing like that, how big of a thing
- 10:38was that to have Cracker Barrel now as your entitlement partner?
- 10:42It's massive. I would say, you know, it's, I
- 10:44can't say Cracker Barrel 400 enough without putting a smile
- 10:47on my face. They're a local partner here.
- 10:50They were born and bred here in Lebanon, TN 8 miles from us at
- 10:53the racetrack. And you know, homestyle family,
- 10:58your home away from home is their location.
- 11:00That's what we like to say here at Nashville Super Speedway as
- 11:03well. Hopefully we're your home
- 11:05racetrack and bringing those worlds combined and executing
- 11:09Cracker Barrel 400 is gonna be great.
- 11:11But it's also a Speedway Motorsports wide opportunity for
- 11:15us and them to engage in all of our NASCAR Cup Series and race
- 11:20weekends that they get to experience the Speedway
- 11:22Motorsports event and customers. And a true partnership is how do
- 11:26we, how do we benefit them? We're trying to drive more
- 11:29traffic to their stores and get their brand out there and we're
- 11:32super excited to bring them on board.
- 11:34One of the things about the race, Matt, it's been, it's,
- 11:37it's been hot before. And I know you guys are very
- 11:41concerned about the safety of fans and also the fan
- 11:43experience. But moving this race to the
- 11:45night time and moving the date, all those things I think put
- 11:48together for a much better fan experience.
- 11:50Whereas somebody might say, hey, I was there before and it was
- 11:53kind of uncomfortably hot. You guys have done a lot to
- 11:56improve that fan experience. Yeah, We know the this area of
- 12:01the country can be pretty, pretty hot in the months of
- 12:05June, July, August. Typically we've been the 3rd or
- 12:094th week of June on the schedule.
- 12:11This year we're May 30th through June 1st.
- 12:14So we, we've tried to move that to a more accommodating weather
- 12:18wise weekend and we're really excited about that date for all
- 12:22of our races. But instead of 1, not 2, but all
- 12:26three of our races are under the light.
- 12:28So you get cooler temperatures at night.
- 12:30Plus seeing racing under the lights is there's nothing much
- 12:34more. The top stat, seeing cars go 2
- 12:37wide, three wide, whether it's the Wreck Roofing 200, Tennessee
- 12:41Lottery 250 or the Cracker Barrel 400, you're going to see
- 12:45cars and trucks underneath the lights, which is super exciting.
- 12:48We've been able to get that for all three of our races this
- 12:51year. Well, Matt, want to say
- 12:53congratulations on your success so far.
- 12:56It's certainly been great to see racing come back to that
- 12:59racetrack. I know the drivers like it and
- 13:01the fans like it right now, and I know you guys are working your
- 13:04butts off day and night to make it a great experience.
- 13:06So congratulations on the past, good luck on the future, and
- 13:10we'll see you very soon under the lights in Nashville.
- 13:14Of the lights, May 30th through June 1st.
- 13:16Looking forward to welcoming everybody here.
- 13:18John, thank you for all your support.
- 13:20We're going to have great driver appearances even in the fan zone
- 13:23with you. And throughout the weekend,
- 13:25we're going to be programming music and driver appearances,
- 13:28and it's going to be exciting race weekend.
- 13:31Looking forward to it, Sir. Thanks, Matt.
- 13:33Thank you. I appreciate it.
