Transcript
- 0:01Hello and welcome to Off the Shelf with Phil and Dave, the
- 0:06Movie Talk Shower. Each week, one of us takes a
- 0:08movie off our shelf, presents it to the other, and discusses it
- 0:11at length. This week we've got coming off
- 0:21of Dave Shelf 1986's Crocodile Dundee, starring and written by
- 0:28Paul Hogan. Ohhh, yeah.
- 0:29Directed by Peter Faiman, also starring Linda Kozlowski, a slew
- 0:34of others. Yes.
- 0:35Too many to count, really, But the real two hander we got on
- 0:37our hands here. Oh, yeah, buddy.
- 0:39David, welcome back to the couch.
- 0:40Thank you. Why this movie?
- 0:42Why now? And maybe what your history is
- 0:45with this? Movie you don't know if I have.
- 0:48Any I don't. It's not a classic is.
- 0:50It that's the questionable, we will explain that by the end of
- 0:54the. Episode Well, you can see what
- 0:55I've been trying to do because you couldn't go to Australia,
- 0:58I'm bringing Australia. To you and it's appreciated.
- 1:02I'm glad, and this is the final one.
- 1:04This concludes that, just so you know.
- 1:07Oh, we're closing the page. Closing the loop, if you will,
- 1:09on Australia. OK, Mad Max, obviously, and here
- 1:14we are with Crocodile Dundee. Because if you're going to pick
- 1:17an Australian movie. None more Australian than this.
- 1:20I would. I found a Mark Wahlberg one
- 1:23really. I think it might have been
- 1:24directed by Peter Jackson is sort of, he's in New Zealand.
- 1:27Yeah, I did go there too. So it would have qualified.
- 1:30So I almost brought that off. He directed him in The Lovely
- 1:33Bones. That's it.
- 1:35It's one of the worst movies. Ever seen in my life, Some
- 1:38people liked it. And I'm thinking this, see Mark
- 1:40Wahlberg in that world. But I said no, let's be kind to
- 1:44Phil. So I thought we'd bring the
- 1:46charm of Paul Hogan. Yeah.
- 1:48And Co. And I mean, I haven't seen this
- 1:50movie. And did you watch it in
- 1:52preparation for an Australian? Trip I haven't seen this movie
- 1:55in 40 years. I would.
- 1:57Say 40 years. Yeah.
- 1:59Ish. Yeah, let me throw in Ish to be
- 2:00safe. There.
- 2:01Well, it's January 2026. The movie came out in 86.
- 2:04Yeah. So 40 years Max.
- 2:08Thanks. I don't know if I saw it in the
- 2:09theatre, yeah, but I imagine it was a rental in my household.
- 2:14Relatively family friendly. Also another movie that would
- 2:17have been just on cable. This was yeah, yeah, on that TV
- 2:20WGN thing. Yeah, for sure.
- 2:21I don't think I saw the sequels. I saw 2.
- 2:23OK, well hold your horses there, buddy.
- 2:26Your history, not mine. That's it for me.
- 2:29But yeah, this throw to you, what is your history with the
- 2:33series, I guess. This is a movie that I remember
- 2:38loving in 1980. Six.
- 2:39Yeah, I can see that. Even whenever it came out, I
- 2:42have not seen it in probably the same length of time.
- 2:46What I remember most about it, I suppose, is less the movie
- 2:49because there's like the beats and we'll talk about a couple of
- 2:51things that I think have transcended the movie.
- 2:54They were obviously heavy rotation on the trailers and
- 2:57commentary so forth that have lingered beyond the lifespan of
- 3:01the movie. But what I remember are things
- 3:04like the cultural phenomenon that this movie was OK for a
- 3:08period of time. Australia just felt like and he
- 3:11in particular felt like everywhere.
- 3:14I remember seeing more and more ads for Fosters interest.
- 3:17They don't know is Australian phobia.
- 3:19Yes. I do remember that you mentioned
- 3:21it. Yeah, and that was a thing, OK,
- 3:23Paul Hogan hosted the. Oscars, that's your world.
- 3:28That's my world. But when he gets that, holy
- 3:30shit, this guy is big. This guy was nobody in 1985.
- 3:35Sure. Yeah.
- 3:36At least, you know, in the general public.
- 3:37Yeah. And now he's hosting the Oscars
- 3:39with an Academy Award nomination for this screenplay.
- 3:42Really I'm. Surprised.
- 3:44Put a pin in that. OK, continue.
- 3:46But that is the world we're living in.
- 3:48I love pins and as you know, I was a big wrestling fan growing
- 3:51up. It's been documented.
- 3:52As a result, Outback Jack was introduced as a wrestler in the
- 3:58WWF. He goes out of the game by then.
- 4:00His whole thing was he's Australian, he's from the
- 4:04Outback, there's all these that's running around.
- 4:06Does he have like a stuffed alligator with him or crocodile?
- 4:09It should say. I'll play you a clip and maybe
- 4:10I'll put it on the Facebook. It is something to behold.
- 4:15He even had an LG N proper 8 inch figure that I bought.
- 4:19Like he was a big enough thing that they were going to cash in
- 4:21on this. Australian Fever and the sequel
- 4:23came out just two years later. So they were clearly seeing
- 4:27lightning in a bottle. And to give you a little
- 4:30indication, the next one in Los Angeles.
- 4:34Yeah. Came out in 2001.
- 4:35So from 88 to 2001, silence on the Crocodile Dundee.
- 4:40And then trying to tap into some nostalgia.
- 4:42Right. And it's going to sell tickets,
- 4:44reserve the requel, as they like to call it.
- 4:46Yeah. So.
- 4:46And imagine it was garbage. Never saw it.
- 4:48Couldn't tell you. But I did work at the video
- 4:51store, and we had some copies, and it was a thing.
- 4:52So in watching this again, I remembered very little other
- 4:56than a couple of the things. There was no real history kind
- 4:59of built in. But I do remember the culture
- 5:01around it was a big, big deal. Interesting.
- 5:03Yeah, I was happy to. I was interested in watching it
- 5:07again because it had been so. Long not excited though.
- 5:09I was not that excited. What I was excited about was
- 5:13this discussion. OK, because I wanted to know
- 5:17just at first glance, because you hadn't, as you said, watched
- 5:20it prior to your trip. Hmm.
- 5:22When you returned or watching it even for this podcast?
- 5:25Sure. Yeah.
- 5:26I wonder how things have changed or.
- 5:28Not. In those subsequent years, did
- 5:31you find, yeah, maybe not the scenery specifically, but like,
- 5:35was the vibe something you were experienced down there?
- 5:38Definitely not, no. But I think the difference is,
- 5:40and these were sort of my preconceptions of Australia
- 5:46thinking snakes. I'm thinking crocodiles now.
- 5:49I don't think it's because I watched this movie when I was 9
- 5:52or 10. I don't think I would have
- 5:54carried that over as what I think Australia is.
- 5:57I think there's a lot of things since Steve Irwin.
- 5:59Oh, there you. Go, who must have watched this
- 6:02movie when he was really young and was strongly influenced by
- 6:05this character and he found this love for animals.
- 6:08I imagine there's some connective tissue for him there,
- 6:11but having been to Australia now, if you're in the city, you
- 6:15don't see any of. This you didn't go walk about.
- 6:17Did not go walkabout. OK, all right.
- 6:19Some of the scenery, Sure. I think I mentioned this.
- 6:23I saw an iguana, but didn't see any snakes.
- 6:25Obviously didn't see any crocodiles.
- 6:27Koala. I did see a couple Kangaroos.
- 6:29OK, yeah, maybe a koala in the zoo.
- 6:31For sure it's a tiger. Lion.
- 6:33Lots of good stuff there, buddy. Sure, but it wasn't exactly what
- 6:38I had imagined. I imagine in the outskirts, you
- 6:40know, yeah. Oh, it's, I mean, it's a
- 6:43relatively big country, enough so that everybody went to see
- 6:47Mad Max and made it the most popular movie ever.
- 6:50And I imagine how this movie did in the box office.
- 6:52I don't have the numbers and I'm not going to look him.
- 6:54Up. No, I'm not either.
- 6:55I think we just know that everyone knows about this movie.
- 6:58Yeah, I think it was a big hit. Obviously Oscar nominated, so
- 7:02not that, not that that means a ton of things, but clearly
- 7:05enough people thought it was of some value that it made enough
- 7:09money just warrant a sequel to make Paul Hogan effectively a
- 7:13movie star. Yeah, he continued to work
- 7:15throughout. Still going strong as of 2012 I
- 7:19think. Yeah, well, that was 13 years
- 7:21ago, but you've done something. Since I didn't dive deep into
- 7:23his. You know in that time frame he
- 7:26did almost an Angel in 1990. Or so I know nothing else of
- 7:30what he did. This is it for me.
- 7:32Yeah, this is it for me too. But he's had bits and pieces who
- 7:35didn't, or at least shouldn't have, is Linda Kozlowski.
- 7:40Oh, you didn't like her? Oh my gosh, as a character,
- 7:42we're going to talk a little bit about her throughout course.
- 7:44She's in the movie, but she is Olga levels.
- 7:49Wow, disengagement. Really.
- 7:52Yeah, we're going to talk about her character, but and, and how
- 7:55I feel about the character, sure.
- 7:57But fundamentally, as an actor, this girl is terrible to me.
- 8:02OK, so that was a real barrier for entry.
- 8:04I'm gonna come out right flat. Out.
- 8:06I appreciate the honesty buddy. It was a challenge to stay
- 8:09connected to the film with her as the Co lead.
- 8:13Good to know I didn't have issues to that level.
- 8:16Just dropping. We're going to, we're going to
- 8:18talk about it, OK? Just don't drop it.
- 8:20Drop a little knowledge up at the top here.
- 8:22Well, I'm going to drop something for you, her voice.
- 8:25Oh, OK. She sounded like somebody I've
- 8:28heard recently. And for the first watch, I
- 8:29couldn't figure it out. About halfway through the 2nd
- 8:32watch. And like, that's who you sound
- 8:35like. OK, so a little bit later, you
- 8:37solved your own. I did.
- 8:38OK good. And I stand by it.
- 8:40All right, I stand by it. So when we get to that scene,
- 8:43we're going to pause for a moment.
- 8:44You're going to listen and I'm gonna tell you, and then you're
- 8:48gonna go back and see if you can hear it.
- 8:49Sounds great. OK.
- 8:51I'm excited, good game, I appreciate it.
- 8:54Well, hope you appreciate this synopsis from IMDb because I'm
- 8:59going to. Give that to you now.
- 9:00Do you want to check the IMDb or are you?
- 9:02Just let it go. Let it go.
- 9:03It's not gonna change, OK. You start off the year with
- 9:07such. This, buddy, it's already down
- 9:10now. We're not of January yet at time
- 9:12of recordation. Obviously we're past Groundhog
- 9:14Day at this point, clearly. An American reporter travels to
- 9:18the Australian Outback to meet eccentric poacher Mick Crocodile
- 9:23Dundee and invites him to New York City, where he comes face
- 9:27to face with the complexities of modern life.
- 9:31That's terrible. Is it too much?
- 9:32It's too much. Why would anybody want to watch
- 9:34that movie? It's classic.
- 9:36That's why I don't know, I don't love it.
- 9:39It's too long. I don't think it is what it
- 9:40wants to do. And then it's bad.
- 9:42All right, Well, we had a good run.
- 9:43Sure, Call them a poacher. So no, it's like that guy in the
- 9:46bar. Blatantly.
- 9:47Exactly. You don't know the facts, but
- 9:48you know anything. It's got guns, got bullets.
- 9:50Fake news Fake news. You need those big bullets to
- 9:53shoot those big. Fish.
- 9:54That's right. I don't know.
- 9:55You don't know. So here we are.
- 9:58We start out this movie actually in New York Newsday, back when
- 10:04they were big empires. Sure, absolutely, when there
- 10:06were newspapers and production people with scruples and morals.
- 10:10Yeah, I'd say simpler times, but not really.
- 10:12And they're still. Difficult, challenging.
- 10:14Different. Ink on your fingers.
- 10:16You know you don't want that. That's.
- 10:17Not good for anyone. But we get the sort of the
- 10:20introduction of what we're dealing with.
- 10:22Here the plot, if you can call it.
- 10:25That it is sand paper thin, I will admit that, but the idea of
- 10:30it's kind of fun. Sure, we can both agree that I
- 10:32imagine. She's hearing funny stories
- 10:34about a character. Yeah.
- 10:35I wanna go. Yeah.
- 10:36And frankly, when you have a budget like that in a news, you
- 10:40know, gathering organization, apparently, why not?
- 10:43Exactly right. I think about someone like Adam
- 10:45Sandler. I like Hawaii.
- 10:48I'm just going to keep making movies in Hawaii and invite my
- 10:51friends. I like my friends.
- 10:53What a guy. So he's an interesting.
- 10:55Character. It just feels like, you know, if
- 10:56I was a newspaper person like Australia, I'm sure I could find
- 10:59a story in Australia. Yeah, man, I'm gonna go to
- 11:02Australia for 10 days and you're gonna pay for it.
- 11:05Yeah, this is perfect. That checks.
- 11:07Exactly 100 I would do it for sure.
- 11:08So it makes sense to me. And this guy seems to have an
- 11:11interesting enough story. So you're in, you're into this,
- 11:13Absolutely. And we established there's a
- 11:15relationship between Richard and Sue, which I don't advise
- 11:19because they work. Other, yes, that's made clear.
- 11:22That's right. To us, that's clear.
- 11:23Yes, there is a thing about this relationship that runs
- 11:26throughout the movie that I have real problems with.
- 11:28But it does establish a little bit here that there is some
- 11:32connection between the two. Yeah.
- 11:33There's a romance, totally. Which will factor in a little
- 11:37later, but for now, she's going to go to Australia, right?
- 11:40This great story, It's going to be Walter.
- 11:45Walter. Played by somebody.
- 11:48And that somebody is John Malan. That's it.
- 11:50He's a rapscallion, that guy. Right?
- 11:52Combing his hair. Yeah.
- 11:53Looking all fine. Most useless character in the
- 11:56movie. Yeah.
- 11:57I'm shocked actually how much he's introduced, like how much
- 12:02he's a part of this relationship.
- 12:04Didn't have the script for. Him and then he's completely
- 12:07dropped and they make like a perfunctory phone call to him an
- 12:11hour and 20 minutes from now kind of thing.
- 12:12Just Oh yeah, still doing it. That's expensive.
- 12:15Call back then, by the way. Not easy.
- 12:18Just crazy. It's easy.
- 12:19Yeah, I guess. Yeah, you gotta.
- 12:20Die 8 Country or something, you know, You know, it just struck
- 12:24me as strange that this is theoretically one of, I would
- 12:28assume when you're introduced that this is a guy that's going
- 12:30to play a role and he's not, he's not really in this movie.
- 12:32I'm OK with that though. OK, alright.
- 12:34You like the two hander? Yeah, I love it.
- 12:36Just give me the Yeah, give me the man and woman.
- 12:38For me, one hand is usually enough, but let me tell you, we
- 12:42get some beautiful shots of Australia from a helicopter.
- 12:48One of those helicopters with the clear glass.
- 12:51Yeah. You into that?
- 12:52Yeah, yeah, you, you know your helicopters, your helicopter
- 12:56guy, you don't know cars, but helicopters all over.
- 12:59It Yeah, I feel like there's a lot of glass in the windshield
- 13:03on a. Helicopter, that's what it
- 13:06particular, but here we are in Walkabout Creek, pretty quiet
- 13:10town. There's no one around.
- 13:12We did not visit this on my trip.
- 13:14No, never never tour. Downtown, buddy, Downtown.
- 13:20Is this your type of bar? Well, I haven't been to a bar
- 13:22for a very long time. Good for you.
- 13:23It's quiet, it seems. Well, the crowd.
- 13:28It's where everybody in the town seems to be.
- 13:30Yeah. It's not my type of or.
- 13:32No, no, no. It's got booze in it.
- 13:34I don't really do. And a rowdy bunch.
- 13:36I'm not rowdy. Used to be used to.
- 13:38You used to have a problem. I was a guy that might have been
- 13:41interested in punching the guy with the glasses on his.
- 13:43Head. Yeah, not kissing.
- 13:45Him not kissing him, but I could have been involved in that type
- 13:47of scenario. Especially if you're stretching.
- 13:49My worst days. Especially if you were
- 13:50stretching. What a punk.
- 13:52Did you like the story though? The legend.
- 13:54Oh yeah, I'm a big fan of that kind of thing.
- 13:56Anytime as you know, if you can set up a character before you're
- 14:01introduced to a. Character, you do like that.
- 14:03I'm in now whether the payoff is worth it, like different movies,
- 14:06different characters or you know, but but in terms of a
- 14:08structure, I love it. I think it's great idea.
- 14:11And can you either be menacing, right?
- 14:14Did you hear about the guy? He killed the guy.
- 14:15Oh, my gosh, he killed this guy, right?
- 14:17And he shows up and you're like, oh, yeah, this guy.
- 14:18I know this guy's trouble. With the usual suspects correct?
- 14:21I like how the waitress calls out Wally.
- 14:24Like your story gets better every time.
- 14:26Snake infested. He lost his leg, dragged himself
- 14:30all the way right past the hospital, right into the bar.
- 14:33And like, that's a fun story. Yeah, totally.
- 14:35And the legend is really more important than anything in these
- 14:38kinds of stories, right? Yeah, of course.
- 14:40So I love it. It ties right in.
- 14:41And when we're introduced to Mick as he comes in, Yeah, this
- 14:46is that guy, right? He's got the crocodile with him.
- 14:49Yeah. It's fake, though.
- 14:50Yeah, sure. For those who don't stuffed
- 14:52stuff. So it is real.
- 14:53That's. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 14:55But the first note I have about Paul Hogan is this guy is
- 14:58leather. That skin is like Roy Scheider.
- 15:02Oh, yeah. Jaws, too.
- 15:03Well, that's just. Yeah.
- 15:04Heathery. The sun, my friend.
- 15:06I don't know if I brought this up at some point where you are
- 15:09in Australia, the sun's very close to the Earth and the ozone
- 15:12hole is lingering around that area.
- 15:15So you're going to get toasty. I wouldn't survive.
- 15:18I can last a couple weeks, Sure, But yeah, very leathery.
- 15:22Like you with your pants in your 20s, if you recall.
- 15:27Or leather pants. I never.
- 15:28Wore. No, you didn't.
- 15:29That's right. No, I thought you did.
- 15:32No, I couldn't tell the difference for where this guy's
- 15:34pants began or his shirt began. His jacket began.
- 15:38It was like he was all wearing. Everything but his wallet,
- 15:42ironically. What was Velcro?
- 15:45The rest of, Yeah, very leathery, but you know,
- 15:49attractive enough you can't see. Speaking of which, did you get
- 15:52that attraction, that chemistry when they first meet?
- 15:55Cause she has a look on her face.
- 15:57I don't think there is chemistry whatsoever.
- 16:00Isn't that kind of ironic as you mentioned they are married?
- 16:02They really married for like 20. Years.
- 16:04Not anymore. Well, no chemistry.
- 16:06But they were, if not married before this movie, they were
- 16:09married like during this movie, OK?
- 16:10And there's not a single solitary moment between the two
- 16:14of them that I feel any sense of friendship, let alone romance.
- 16:19Interesting. I think it's actually quite
- 16:21important to know if they were married before the movie or
- 16:25after, because that's a big difference.
- 16:28Sure, like a lot would have already the the love eyes would.
- 16:31Have faced yeah, you're saying well, there's a lot of actors
- 16:33who meet, yes you know, and they're together for awhile or
- 16:36if you're going in it together but that's interesting.
- 16:39I did. Get something out of them.
- 16:41It wasn't like lights out, but I thought on I bought in.
- 16:45OK, I bought in. She sucks.
- 16:47Yeah. And so because of that, I have
- 16:49no and, but I think even if I accepted her as being credible
- 16:53actor, I just didn't feel anything between the two at any
- 16:57point. See, I don't think she sucked,
- 16:58OK? I think that's something we're
- 17:00gonna differ. On literally cause you're
- 17:02willing to accept that like there was some romance there.
- 17:04I think part of why I don't is because she sucks so bad.
- 17:07I thought she was fine and this could.
- 17:08Be it, he says. It's revealed that he's been
- 17:12divorced. She asks.
- 17:13You know, what's his story? Oh yeah, yeah.
- 17:16Yeah, he says. I went walkabout. 18 months?
- 17:19Well, he says 2, but apparently it was 18 according to Walt.
- 17:23That's right. And and yes, no sense of time
- 17:25though. So she didn't wanna wait, I
- 17:26guess. Would you?
- 17:28Not for leather, I mean aged leather 18 months.
- 17:33I do like his lack of sense of time.
- 17:37Yes, Say that, right. Yeah.
- 17:38Your time guy. I am a time guy.
- 17:41But when he looks up and says, oh, it's 2:20 and she, oh, it is
- 17:44220. But the fact that he had looked
- 17:47at Walley's watch before, I'm thinking this guy might be a bit
- 17:49of a fraud. Yeah.
- 17:51Well, that's a legend, right? Print the legend is what?
- 17:53It is. I like the uncertainty of how
- 17:56much of this is actually true of this character.
- 17:58So I think for all the faults I have and will continue to have
- 18:02throughout the movie, I find him charming.
- 18:04I can see the attraction. I can see why you might want to
- 18:09host the Oscars. Yeah, I see how he became a
- 18:12thing. To a certain extent, anyway.
- 18:14Looks good on paper. Yeah, and I think he's good in
- 18:17the movie. I think he doesn't have a lot to
- 18:19do. And I think that goes back to
- 18:20the screenplay that I'm questioning is it's Oscar
- 18:22nomination. He's kind of being himself, I
- 18:24imagine to a certain. Level to a certain certain
- 18:26character he's developed, obviously feels very comfortable
- 18:28in it. But these early scenes, I do
- 18:31like the setups, these little jokes, a little shyster.
- 18:35He's a little bit of a fraud, certainly, you're right, but not
- 18:39all fraud, and I think that's the fun.
- 18:40Part That's a good point because we see how he is with the bull.
- 18:46Yeah, that's a bowl, right? That looks like a bull to.
- 18:48Me in the middle of the road. Yeah.
- 18:49And I will say this was a good camera shot.
- 18:52Like it's a pretty intense moment.
- 18:54Sure, close up on the. Face.
- 18:55Yeah. And we're getting like another
- 18:57mind meld essentially in an Australian movie.
- 19:00Basically, you're right. Thing touches, it does a little
- 19:02thing and then it just lays down.
- 19:04Makes the weird sounds. And now this was a thing that
- 19:07lived on in the schoolyards. Oh, really?
- 19:10Oh yeah, We were doing this stuff in the neighborhood.
- 19:12I really missed out on that. Yeah, I mean, it wasn't like
- 19:14everybody, everything, but it was like, again, cultural thing
- 19:17this movie was. And that was one of those scenes
- 19:19that was in the trailer, and it lived a little longer than the.
- 19:21Movies. Trajectory because of it.
- 19:24I remember going to like Animal Kingdom, the Disney park, OK,
- 19:28and joking with the people I was with making that to different
- 19:34animals around, like, so it's in the air that that one in
- 19:37particular is one of those scenes that lived on.
- 19:39Really. Issue is it doesn't really help.
- 19:40It's still in the way. Yeah, I thought that.
- 19:42Did you? I thought my nitpicking.
- 19:43Here, no, I think that that is really funny to me because the
- 19:47threat isn't that he's going to kill them, they're in a truck.
- 19:50The threat is more get out of the way.
- 19:52So I think it's a good scene for no purpose.
- 19:57Yeah, exactly, I asked my wife. Like I said, listen, honey, is
- 20:00it just me or is there still a problem here on the road?
- 20:03What's your opinion? And.
- 20:05She said leave me alone. Don't talk to me.
- 20:08She's just happy watching another classic.
- 20:10That's right, happy to take another classic off the shelf.
- 20:14And the whole point of this tour, by the way, is she wants
- 20:18to go to where it all happened. Yeah, she wants the profile on
- 20:22the guy. I have a little bit of issues
- 20:24with the plot. Ohk OK, like I don't want.
- 20:26I don't know, like that's not exactly a good idea.
- 20:30I mean, that's she's a journalist.
- 20:31That's the whole point. I think we talked to 20 minutes
- 20:33ago about it being a. Can you just tell the story
- 20:36though? Does she have to go?
- 20:38Then you're not a reporter, you're just addictive.
- 20:40What do you call it? Just dictating.
- 20:43Yeah, well, I guess she needs some pictures.
- 20:45Pictures of story. You need a context?
- 20:48You know, that's news. That's reporting, buddy.
- 20:49I guess I'm lazy. Lazy.
- 20:51Yeah, you tell me the story, You tell me the story.
- 20:56I'll just type it. In fact, you type it, I'll
- 20:58publish. I actually can type pretty good
- 21:0160 words a minute. That's great.
- 21:03Yeah, it's a keyboarding class back in Windows.
- 21:04The thing? Yeah, yeah, you're also a woman,
- 21:07it turns out, in the 50s. I wish.
- 21:11Let me tell. You things were so great for
- 21:13them. Back then we got a crocodile in
- 21:16the water. Yeah, she's a little startled,
- 21:18but no big deal at this point, so it's fine.
- 21:21It's in a distance. Yes, she sees the boat.
- 21:25They go from boat to boat. Yeah, but you see.
- 21:29The original boat, the big transition from the the new boat
- 21:32to the old boat. So they could call a boat to
- 21:34boat. Yeah.
- 21:34Classic boat to boat. Yeah, the CD special, they call
- 21:39it. So we're getting into what
- 21:42actually happened. He shows that the croc bit
- 21:44through the boat. He was just a peaceful
- 21:46fisherman, allegedly, Yes, she thinks he's been poaching.
- 21:52The bullets tell that story. But so he just starts to tell
- 21:56the story of what he suffered. Yeah, the attack, that's right,
- 22:00yeah. And he tells the story.
- 22:02Now you tell me how this story affected because you were down
- 22:05under. Well, luckily I wasn't down
- 22:07underneath the water underneath the log waiting to be eaten.
- 22:11Yeah, now did you tenderizing? That's right.
- 22:14Did you know anything about crocodile?
- 22:16Eating. Not really, no.
- 22:17This story, it's riveting, it's interesting facts.
- 22:21Totally. It reminded me a lot of Jaws.
- 22:23Do these sharks do the same thing or they?
- 22:25They tear you apart, they shift you around, the tire you out.
- 22:29They don't necessarily leave you for dead.
- 22:31But Quint talks about how you know you're getting the
- 22:34shakedown. The shakedown.
- 22:36He talks about a little shake and little tenderizing.
- 22:38Jurassic Park, if you remember. He talks about the Raptor who
- 22:41he's trying to scare the kid so they don't go for the jugular.
- 22:44Yeah, they go here and you know you're being eaten.
- 22:47That's a few years, obviously later.
- 22:49But this story, I thought, was very.
- 22:51Effective and I imagine if you fact checked that's what they
- 22:55do. I trust it.
- 22:55They save you for later, they don't eat you right then and
- 22:57there. Need a whole one whole person on
- 23:00you gotta chip nipple. They could have just had lunch.
- 23:02That's right, you don't know we don't have nipple.
- 23:03Yeah. That's it.
- 23:05Save it for later. But you also don't want, you
- 23:06want to protect it. They're like hide you under
- 23:08things because they're gonna come.
- 23:09Back cats do that with stuff, Yeah, for different reasons.
- 23:12Bastards. But it's getting late fill up
- 23:14and they need to settle in for the night.
- 23:16Set up camp. In the Outback.
- 23:19Yeah, it's where they are still there, Outback.
- 23:23Some pretty good dialogue, so when it comes to script it's
- 23:26engaging. You're locking in here.
- 23:28This is your yeah. OK they're talking about the
- 23:31indigenous. It's not their land.
- 23:34The land is like their mother and like 2 fleas.
- 23:37Don't fight over whose dog this is.
- 23:40He was raised by a tribe. Yes, that's what he says, Yeah.
- 23:44I missed that the first time. That's a lie.
- 23:46There's a lot to miss. Would have been nodding off
- 23:49right there. She discusses how she was in the
- 23:51past with the man. With the guy, yeah.
- 23:54Divorced. So he's been divorced now she's
- 23:56been divorced. Perfect.
- 23:57Double the protester he was. Oh, yeah.
- 24:00This feels like an 80s thing. End of the 80s.
- 24:03It's a lot of like, get over yourselves.
- 24:06Oh, yeah, yeah, hippies are useless, you know, like, get on
- 24:09board. So the fact that this sort of
- 24:11protest he marched for everything is like a, a thing
- 24:14that is being joked about is like he's a loser for it.
- 24:17I think. Now Fast forward 40 years.
- 24:20There's a lot of shit to protest and I'm happy that people are
- 24:22doing. It Oh, absolutely.
- 24:23The thing about the arms. Race like, yeah, whatever.
- 24:26Yeah, think about the arms race. He's like, it's not really my
- 24:29problem. Yeah, everybody's, everybody's
- 24:32problem. Exactly.
- 24:32And that's the problem with the yeah, that situation.
- 24:35Everyone's. Yeah, whatever, no big deal.
- 24:36This is where I'm listening to her talk.
- 24:39This is the moment. This is the moment where I hear
- 24:42somebody else. OK, so we're going to take a
- 24:45moment and you're going to listen to it.
- 24:47All righty. Have you have protested
- 24:49anything? Sure, every time it gets thrown
- 24:52out of the pub. Come on, I'm serious.
- 24:55I mean, where would Someone Like You stand on, say, the nuclear
- 24:59debate? Anything, David?
- 25:01You stumped me again. Nothing, nothing stand.
- 25:04Out. All right, I'm going to tell
- 25:05you, OK? And you're gonna listen to it
- 25:07again, OK? Annette Benning.
- 25:09What do you think about the arms race?
- 25:12Something closer to home, the Aborigines.
- 25:16What do you think about their claims to get the land back?
- 25:19Now that you say it, hmm. There's a yeah, a lilt in this,
- 25:25in Linda's lips that gives me a little Benning.
- 25:29You're sad. It pains me.
- 25:32You can see it in my face. If this were on YouTube folks,
- 25:34you would see the pain in my face to say, Dave, you might be
- 25:37right on this. Because you gave me no love on
- 25:39the Bradley Cooper Toe cutter, that is.
- 25:41Ridiculous. That is the silliest.
- 25:43Thing I stand by it, but this however I couldn't shake it.
- 25:46I don't know that I will be able to shake it, but yeah, you
- 25:51sadly, you're a weird. Well done.
- 25:55Yeah. Thank you.
- 25:55Good show. Appreciate it, I know it's just
- 25:57something. It's I'm impressed that you were
- 26:00able to pull that because I did not hear that whatsoever.
- 26:03But now. Maybe that's what distracted me
- 26:05from her performance because I didn't really have an.
- 26:07Issue were watching at Benning, Yeah.
- 26:09Maybe Oscar winner I imagine at this point if not nominated.
- 26:13Nominated a few times but never won.
- 26:15Very sad. Should have won American Beauty.
- 26:18Yeah, it would have been a clean sweep for the Big 5 on that.
- 26:20One, maybe that's why you got to keep it fair.
- 26:23Spread the love. One animal I did see Phillip
- 26:37while in Australia was the kangaroo.
- 26:39You mentioned yes. But not hopping around.
- 26:41Lazy. Were they being shot at any
- 26:43time? Because if you get shot at,
- 26:45you're going to hop around. I don't think you can do that
- 26:46anymore, I don't think. I don't think you can do it then
- 26:48either. He said it was legal.
- 26:50I don't think they're doing in the middle of the night.
- 26:53Wow, at the very least it's the ground upon.
- 26:58You ever see Kangaroo Jack? Negative.
- 27:00I saw that movie in 2002. Thousand and two for something
- 27:03like. That McConnell O'Connell
- 27:04O'Connell. That's it.
- 27:06Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. Oh, Jerry B.
- 27:09And I thought to myself, thank goodness Jerry Bruckheimer is
- 27:14going to have a box office bomb on his hands, because no one in
- 27:18their right mind would want to see a heist movie with a CGI
- 27:23kangaroo starring Jerry O'Connell and that fucking
- 27:27movie. Many millions.
- 27:30So much not like Armageddon levels.
- 27:32Of first office no one's gonna touch.
- 27:34That, but clearly was a huge success.
- 27:37Fan. Favorite and something for
- 27:39everyone in that. I thought to myself, you've
- 27:40never seen this movie. I thought to myself, This is why
- 27:44I don't have a career in Hollywood.
- 27:45Because if you had said, Phil, give me $5000 to help me make
- 27:50Kangaroo Jack, I would have laughed in your face and walked
- 27:52away. And the other person that gave
- 27:54you $5000 would have made half a million.
- 27:57Yeah, he didn't make it, buddy. That's my kangaroo story.
- 28:00I assume you have the same one. Or mines from the actual movie,
- 28:04This one. No, no.
- 28:05Jerry McConnell to be seen. Or O'Connell even.
- 28:08She wants him to do something about.
- 28:09It yes, she wants yes, yes. And he does.
- 28:12He wants to impress the lady. Don't we all?
- 28:15Sometimes not anymore on the slow decline though.
- 28:20I think it's a fun scene. I enjoy it, it's shot well, but
- 28:25logistically my only issue, and it could come across as a
- 28:28potential nitpick. He shoots at the guy, yeah, and
- 28:33he's pointing the gun in his direction, but the bullet hits
- 28:35the side of the gun. Yeah, yeah, the geography is a
- 28:38little. Yeah, yeah.
- 28:39And then he shoots 2 more times. I'm sure he has good aim.
- 28:44I'm not casting aspersions, you know.
- 28:47I don't like to cast anything, no.
- 28:49Maybe a spell if I could. If you could.
- 28:50But I can't, no you webcast, you know you've done that on
- 28:54occasion. But that was dangerous and you
- 28:57should be more careful with. Firearms.
- 28:59I mean, shooting out the lights at one point, another.
- 29:00So now you're like, I don't know what he's shooting at.
- 29:02It's funny having a dead kangaroo.
- 29:04Like shooting at the guy is funny.
- 29:07Sure. Just I don't know if it holds
- 29:09up. Yeah, that's all I'm saying.
- 29:10Now, what I did think holds up is the snake scene.
- 29:13I don't want to overlook that. Tell me more.
- 29:16Normal conversation, yeah. Grabs it from behind, snaps its
- 29:21neck. Don't really have a neck or some
- 29:23vertebrae or they have one really long neck.
- 29:25Could. Be you think about that.
- 29:26Did you know? Yeah, I think about predator
- 29:29when I think of these kind of animals like that, you know, and
- 29:31they're in the jungle and. Yeah.
- 29:33Snakes are climbing. Yeah, whatever.
- 29:35Yeah. I like this one.
- 29:36Venomous, sure. Not poisonous.
- 29:37There's a difference. Tell me more.
- 29:39No. Look at Science Corner with Dave
- 29:41here. No time for that.
- 29:44Anything to do with like the animals of this.
- 29:46That's the 1st 20 minutes. Thirty minutes.
- 29:49That's part of it. Because that's where we are.
- 29:52Because we're not going to be here forever.
- 29:54No, I'm moving on Blue for sure. Another scene or two here.
- 29:58Yes, yes, one animal that does present themselves in this
- 30:01moment. Finally, we get to have a little
- 30:04bit of. Croc action, yes.
- 30:07First we get a little butt shot though, for crack.
- 30:09Actually crack almost. Yeah.
- 30:11That was quite a butt scene though, pretty buddy.
- 30:13I'm not afraid to say it that was.
- 30:16Totally reasonable but everything about her performance
- 30:19is pretty terrible but luckily her ass is on point.
- 30:22Maybe that was a butt double though.
- 30:24Didn't look like it. The profile was there.
- 30:26I felt I spent some time. That you wish you felt, you wish
- 30:30you spent some time with. It and I think it's clear that
- 30:32this is actually her butt. And I now see what Paul Hogan
- 30:36may or may not have been. Do you think that water is good
- 30:39to drink? No.
- 30:41My wife called that one out. It looks disgusting.
- 30:43Yeah. Swamp.
- 30:44Swamp. Yeah.
- 30:45Don't go in there. What are you doing?
- 30:46I don't know, but we gotta have an animal attacker so he can be
- 30:49the hero and the legend. Live up to the legend.
- 30:51Yeah, after he hits his head. That's cute.
- 30:55So what do you think of that scene?
- 30:56Did it age well? I guess would be.
- 30:58My thoughts. Generally speaking, it was fine,
- 31:00OK. I thought the attack was edited
- 31:02well, so it cut out away any potential issues with the
- 31:07effect. And also, I thought it was nice
- 31:10to see him actually do the thing, stab him in the head
- 31:13thing, right? And so we've heard this legend.
- 31:16Is he really this thing? Is he the fraud that we thought?
- 31:19And here we are. And you're like, OK, so it's
- 31:21proof that it happened. It gives them a moment.
- 31:24That hug came too fast. I don't know, it was jarring to
- 31:27me. I need it two more seconds.
- 31:30For whatever reason, it was just too instant.
- 31:32OK, a little too tight. OK.
- 31:34Editing wise, alright. Let it breathe a bit.
- 31:36OK, let's have a moment. There, send your notes.
- 31:38I think it was fine generally, but the scene itself, it just
- 31:43propelled the story forward, brought them closer.
- 31:45And anytime there's that kind of adrenaline and your hearts
- 31:49pumping, then yeah, you're going to be a little bit more amorous.
- 31:52They do kiss post fishing. Yeah, now what do you think
- 31:56about that fake fish we've established he doesn't know that
- 31:59he's. I don't think he.
- 32:00Knows. I don't think he knows, and I
- 32:02don't think he tells her. She's told him is that she was
- 32:04once married and now divorced. Yeah, fair game.
- 32:08Fair game. Good movie, by the way.
- 32:10But she knows she has the information.
- 32:14She's withholding it. She is withholding it.
- 32:15That's probably why you don't like her as a person.
- 32:18I am fine with withholding information.
- 32:20Trust me. What aren't you telling?
- 32:23Me, I think that it's a character flaw, yeah, and
- 32:27continues to present itself as such throughout the rest of the
- 32:30movie. But it's not presented to the
- 32:32audience as a character flaw. That Yes, right.
- 32:35It's not a known character flaw. She's just a bad character.
- 32:38Yeah, that's a good point. Because something.
- 32:40Didn't it's not played for that, right?
- 32:41Like it's not like it comes back later or there's some misgivings
- 32:44I don't understand. Like I missed the scene or
- 32:46something. Questionable.
- 32:47So I don't really like that they kind of make out or kiss here.
- 32:51But I don't mind that they kiss. There should be a moment
- 32:54afterwards. I shouldn't have done that.
- 32:56I'm seeing somebody some level. That's it.
- 32:57Self reflection. Come on, she's into.
- 32:59It maybe she's very good at compartmentalizing.
- 33:02Yes, I can't say that word stop. Tricky one.
- 33:06No one knows. I tried that about four times
- 33:08and it's not happening. And another break and levity
- 33:11here, another opportunity to show.
- 33:13I shouldn't even say levity because it's more I think of a
- 33:16showcase of the Australian Indigenous peoples.
- 33:20Oh yes, that's right. Neville, it's a dance party.
- 33:23Yes. Almost forgot about that.
- 33:24Yeah. So.
- 33:25He's a fun character, He's interesting.
- 33:27Fine enough. Absolutely.
- 33:28Kind of plays the game, yeah. And then we have an extended
- 33:31sequence of the dancing, which feels like legitimate tribal
- 33:33dancing from that part of the world.
- 33:35Yeah. Did you see any of that?
- 33:37I didn't see it hands on. We went to see one, but we were
- 33:40there too early and we would have had to wait an hour and we
- 33:43had like a pretty tight schedule.
- 33:44Sure, that's what we attempt to do.
- 33:46That was actually in New Zealand, so.
- 33:47There's so it really took in the culture you're in.
- 33:53Are we just basically had shawarma, right?
- 33:56Yes, fear. Where's the halal vegan store?
- 34:01Place a PlayStation. Yeah, I was more like Neville.
- 34:04I like wearing the jeans though. It was great.
- 34:06It's a nice scene. The moment where he stares at
- 34:09the camera, I feel that that's in the trailer and that's a
- 34:13moment where you feel that stare.
- 34:15There's energy in there, yeah. Yeah, one thing I do love about
- 34:18that moment is she says, oh, I can't take your picture because
- 34:22it. Takes your soul.
- 34:23Yeah, we did go through some caves and stuff.
- 34:26There were a few areas where we couldn't take any pictures
- 34:28whatsoever. And he's like, no, your lens cap
- 34:31is on. That's what Neville says.
- 34:32Yes, that is a funny line. Yeah.
- 34:33Yeah, Oscar, give it to him. But I think it's a good way to
- 34:39end on the Australia part. With the tribe.
- 34:42Sure. Yep, because we are.
- 34:44Switching gears here, That's it. We're about 45 minutes into the
- 34:47movie, so about halfway, halfway.
- 34:49Time to go. Let's change it up.
- 34:51Money talks. I will say, fundamentally, I was
- 34:55surprised at how long it took to get to New York.
- 34:58I thought maybe this whole thing was in Australia.
- 35:00I did not recall, but it makes more sense that I remember the
- 35:02bull in Australia and then everything else I remembered
- 35:05vaguely was from New York. So I really didn't expect to
- 35:08spend 45 minutes. Did you find it too?
- 35:10Much. Yeah.
- 35:11Oh. I found the pacing of this movie
- 35:12to be very challenging. No issue there, We're different
- 35:15people. That we are and partly because I
- 35:18felt no chemistry between the two.
- 35:20I didn't feel like this time was building that relationship and
- 35:23and movies different. That's right in in movies.
- 35:25If you're going to do that right, OK, that's what this time
- 35:28it's building to that. And then whatever little bit I
- 35:31may have felt was dismantled by the time she shows up in New
- 35:36York and starts making out with her boyfriend only when it's
- 35:40become clear that he Crocodile Dundee.
- 35:43Oh, we got split up in customs. It feels like she's playing a
- 35:48real fucking game with these two people.
- 35:50Yeah. I'll make out with you because I
- 35:52know he's back in customs. Oht, here he is.
- 35:54And then like, what the fuck? Come on, come on.
- 35:58I'm not against it. I'm like judging it.
- 36:00I think you are. The type of movie this wants to
- 36:02be in the way it's trying to give it fails because of things
- 36:06like this. These are not likable people.
- 36:08She's not likable person because she's not acknowledging the fact
- 36:11that she's basically 2 timing each of them like she's playing
- 36:14the two off each other. I was distracted by the
- 36:16escalator fiasco. He's coming down.
- 36:19Yes, Claire. Yeah.
- 36:21Yeah. He's scared, terrified this guy
- 36:23can tackle and wrestle an alligator.
- 36:26Yeah, it's funny. But you're not wrong, I don't
- 36:28have an issue so much with the performance, I just don't think
- 36:31she's that great of a person in the romance side of things.
- 36:34Yeah because mine is deeper than that.
- 36:36That first 45 is a complete waste of.
- 36:49I was just thinking about Die Hard.
- 36:52In the midst of this movie. Or in this yeah, when he's on
- 36:55the plane, scrunches with your toes.
- 36:57It's a good idea to do that. And then Reginald they'll
- 37:01Johnson shows up like, oh, look at that.
- 37:04What I felt very similarly is and I felt almost bad, but I saw
- 37:10this guy get out of the vehicle and I thought is that Al Powell
- 37:15downgrade, right and a total downgrade.
- 37:18I thought that as well, yeah. He's playing Argyle in this
- 37:20movie, but it is an upgrade. Because from the timeline, yeah.
- 37:24But he ends up being. Two years later.
- 37:26Two years. Later, he's the cop, so he's on
- 37:28the. Up.
- 37:28He's on the. Up was nice to see old Reginald
- 37:31Vel Johnson. Yeah, once again, he's also an
- 37:33alcoholic, it turns out, it seems, OHSU emergency use.
- 37:37Buddy, emergency customers only. That's right.
- 37:40You got to have something in the ice box.
- 37:42Just believe me, I know. Yeah, that's fair.
- 37:44But it's a good way to get the ball rolling in New York to have
- 37:48a familiar face, absolutely, And there's a lot you can do here.
- 37:51Absolutely stranger in a strange land.
- 37:53You've got lots of opportunity. Despite the fact I mean it's a
- 37:56thin plot, the idea just open up a lot of doors.
- 37:59You have smoking in the elevator.
- 38:01Classic 80s. We get the nice hotel tour and
- 38:06we get the introduction of a bidet.
- 38:08Surprised he didn't make the bidet mate joke.
- 38:12Missed opportunity as far as I'm concerned, so we had to make
- 38:15sure we said it here on the podcast.
- 38:17Thank you. Yeah, he finally figures it out.
- 38:20He's very proud of himself. I love when he shakes the guy's
- 38:22hand. He's just looking for a tip.
- 38:23Yeah. And he's very friendly, right?
- 38:25He's talking to people. Yep, I'm gonna be staying here
- 38:27for a few days. You know, I'll probably see you
- 38:29around. Yeah, 7 million, 7 million
- 38:31people, but they all want to live together or they wouldn't
- 38:33be here. That's right.
- 38:34So they must be very nice place. I love New York.
- 38:37Ever been? No, haven't.
- 38:38No mistake. But not city.
- 38:40Yeah, everyone's big difference. Yeah, Malone.
- 38:45Yeah. Break Rochester in the city,
- 38:49buddy. Yeah, so clearly I haven't done
- 38:51any walking in New York. No.
- 38:53Neither has Mick. I did like the scene where he's
- 38:58walking against the grain. Yeah, I mean, that's a pretty
- 39:01cheesy or cheap way to tell that story, but I visually, but I
- 39:05think it's really good. He was out seeing the sights and
- 39:08you can't get edge wise and just standing on a newspaper boxes
- 39:13you can merge back in like he's helpless.
- 39:15So he just gets up on the lamppost.
- 39:17Yeah, that was kind of funny. I think gets on the horse.
- 39:19Yeah, those people exist. I don't know if they still do.
- 39:21Absolutely. OK, Horsepower, buddy, you've
- 39:24been there. I haven't.
- 39:25I'm not in any position, but if you call 7:00, she's picking
- 39:30him. Up on the button.
- 39:33She's punctual, Sure, give her. That he's looking at the sun.
- 39:35He's got it. And we have Richard there.
- 39:39This fucking guy. Well, he's already had a few
- 39:40drinks. Clearly.
- 39:42See. Yeah.
- 39:43But if a problem perhaps. These are real fucking asshole
- 39:46he. Well, he's a lemon.
- 39:47Let's. Yeah, you wanna take him back,
- 39:49is what you're saying? It's like a lemon of human.
- 39:51That's what Crock calls. Yeah, he's a lemon.
- 39:52Is somebody you don't want. He's a dude.
- 39:54Like a like a dud. That's a better term.
- 39:56Did you find Richard mean during dinner?
- 39:58He did. He warrants.
- 39:59The the punch, the punch, the elbow.
- 40:01It must have been a punch. It's a good move.
- 40:03I think everything about this scene is terrible.
- 40:06I think it's like, it's not great.
- 40:08The problem with movies from this era?
- 40:10Is that it's very stereotype, like if we need smarmy we'll
- 40:14just get like the most smarmy. Guy should have got Richard
- 40:17Dreyfus. Could have gotten Richard just
- 40:18saying yeah. A little too old 86 No, that
- 40:21might have been. Alright, could have been alright
- 40:2310 years after Jaws, yeah, it's in the wheelhouse.
- 40:26I think that his performance though fine I guess, but it's
- 40:31like. Better than hers.
- 40:33This is another one that comes into problems because, OK, let's
- 40:36accept that she is in love with this guy.
- 40:40Which guy? Richard.
- 40:41Richard OK which that's what we're led to believe at the
- 40:45beginning a normal relationship fine.
- 40:47So then maybe the love triangle is what you're going to try and
- 40:51pull off here. But I don't think that she's any
- 40:54better with Mick OK we got 3 characters where it's like I
- 40:57don't like anybody at this table that's mean and this guy is so
- 41:01obnoxious because you can't just be a little obnoxious got to be
- 41:03the most obnoxious. I'll serve for everybody.
- 41:06I'm going to speak Italian, I'm going to make joke about
- 41:08kangaroo and grits and just obnoxious.
- 41:13So I hated this scene. And then Croc punches him and
- 41:16Linda doesn't seem to give a shit.
- 41:18She didn't see it. The guy all of a sudden is
- 41:21comatose at the table. This is a sneaker situation.
- 41:25If you remember, we called out that the old punch would knock
- 41:27you out that. Doesn't knock him out I'm fine
- 41:31with. That we have to because you have
- 41:32on the movie. Rules exactly.
- 41:34Yeah, but the fact that he is knocked out would tell me that
- 41:37Sue should have some fucking awareness that something changed
- 41:40between when I looked behind me and when I looked in front of
- 41:43me. They did have a lot to drink.
- 41:45It does not. Maybe.
- 41:45Just kicked in. Anyway, so I hate that it's so
- 41:48clearly that he's a useless piece of shit and this movie is
- 41:51setting us up to root for Mick Dundee.
- 41:53I'm rooting for him, but I think.
- 41:55You are though. No, I don't care about this
- 41:58relationship because the person he's like trying to be better
- 42:00than is the worst human being on the planet so.
- 42:03So easy. You don't feel any, so she
- 42:06chooses him, which she does later.
- 42:08You're like, Oh, well then Mick mustn't be all that interesting
- 42:10or that relationship doesn't mean anything, or the
- 42:13relationship that she has with Richard doesn't matter because
- 42:15he got punched and she doesn't seem to care.
- 42:17So everything about this scene I've really disliked.
- 42:19You're telling me that you don't like the?
- 42:21Scene. That's what I'm saying.
- 42:23What are your? Thoughts.
- 42:24I like the waiter. Tell me more, nice guy she
- 42:27friendly. I didn't have the issues that
- 42:29you had to that level. Fair.
- 42:30I think you're overanalyzing it buddy.
- 42:33You digging way too deep. This movie is not meant to be
- 42:36taken too. Seriously, it's probably true.
- 42:39That's probably true, but I did have issues that she doesn't
- 42:41seem to care and I feel like that is germane to the story.
- 42:43I'm not going to push back too much with her.
- 42:45Because you're right, I don't think she's a great gal.
- 42:48I think they both can do better, certainly, which says a lot
- 42:52because Richard's not that great of a guy.
- 42:53No. So there you go.
- 42:54I think he just had a little bit too much to drink.
- 42:56I don't think he's normally that bad.
- 42:58He is later, OK, You're right at the dinner party.
- 43:00I think he's also not very. Nice OHT.
- 43:02He's fine, don't worry about it. But it was enough to send Croc
- 43:07off on a mission after the drop off.
- 43:10What does he? Do well immediately.
- 43:11He gets into a taxi, meets a new friend, an Italian.
- 43:15His words, not mine. Yeah, yeah, yeah, sure.
- 43:18I didn't think Italians were big drinkers.
- 43:20A lot of wine, a lot of wine, but.
- 43:22I suspect that's. All but not the hard stuff, I
- 43:25don't. Know.
- 43:25Regardless, they both go to the boozer.
- 43:28Yes and showcase scene. Just kidding, it was fun.
- 43:32I love the shark story. Pretty playful.
- 43:33Yeah. Kill the shark, open it up. 3
- 43:36Filipino fisherman. Yep.
- 43:38So I thought that was funny, but very dated in some areas.
- 43:44We have we have a trans woman, we have a black person.
- 43:49And they're both played to that character.
- 43:51The extremes of whatever that is.
- 43:52Yeah. So I don't think you can grab
- 43:55somebody like that anymore. That's probably frowned upon.
- 43:58Does it twice in this movie. Does it twice, but it lives in
- 44:01that. World.
- 44:02That's right, you can't. Judge, you can't.
- 44:04I won't. He doesn't mean ill will.
- 44:06Doesn't seem it's new to him. Yeah, but it's not a Sheila.
- 44:10And not Sheila, No. Did you enjoy that sequence?
- 44:13Yeah, I thought. Generally this was a piece
- 44:14because I hated so much the previous scene.
- 44:17Actually found this to be a nice levity.
- 44:18Anything could be anything to kind of rise it above and like
- 44:21OK, remind me why I kind of like this character.
- 44:24Obviously take away the. Put them in.
- 44:25The racism or like the sex, you know, like those things again,
- 44:29baked in. He liked the guy.
- 44:30So there's not endorsing it, but there is a little bit of like
- 44:34exterior typical kind of dialogue.
- 44:36Whatever for sure. But I was like, well, remind me
- 44:38why I like this. And this scene kind of does
- 44:40that. He's good hearted, he's funny,
- 44:42he's playful. And any scene that ends with
- 44:45some hookers. Yeah, that'll reel you back.
- 44:47Gets me interested exactly. What's funny about that scene,
- 44:51Phil, is that it's not funny. What I liked about it,
- 44:54Interesting. I love this moment, OK.
- 44:56It's one of my favorite, if not the favorite serious scene.
- 45:00Is it because they offered him a couple of freebies?
- 45:02Well, I mean it's. A good deal gets you interested,
- 45:04I thought. It's his naivete.
- 45:07Did I say that right? His look on his face is like,
- 45:10I'm being sincere here. I want to take you out for
- 45:13dinner. He has no idea what their job
- 45:17is. Sure, and I thought he played
- 45:20that excellent. I was.
- 45:22Really impressed. Wow, yeah, that took it, guy.
- 45:25Yeah, he didn't. He didn't get a sense of.
- 45:27I didn't dislike it. I actually like this overall.
- 45:29Like I said, this whole sequence, this whole section of
- 45:31the film I enjoyed. You sound like a genuine good
- 45:34person who just really doesn't know what's going.
- 45:36On here, yeah, I didn't get that same level of.
- 45:40Watch it again. You want me to like this
- 45:42character? These are the scenes in way you
- 45:44get me to. Just his innocence.
- 45:46So I agree that definitely delivers.
- 45:47Again, I didn't that specific thing.
- 45:49Your loss. Didn't register, but of course
- 45:51he's still punches the guy, which, you know, of course.
- 45:53Pimps. Yeah, come on.
- 45:55It's hard out. There for a pimp, that's the way
- 45:58here. But I know the next scene.
- 46:00This is your type of scene. You love a bathtub scene, that I
- 46:05know. Put me in a bath, folks.
- 46:07No, you're the bather. I am not.
- 46:09However, I hate this scene. Ohhhhh yeah I can see why with.
- 46:14Her character, yeah. As you continue along, why,
- 46:18after what we've seen, she's a tease.
- 46:20Is she still trying to sexualize herself to this Mick Dundee?
- 46:23Guy and from the scene before, he's a good, honest guy.
- 46:27He still seems to be when he's in this tub, he's cleaning his
- 46:30clothes. He's bashful trope.
- 46:32He's bashful and she just the worst performer.
- 46:35I She's just so bad. His legs, senior, meek.
- 46:38Everything about this is terrible.
- 46:40Why is she riding her thighs up this door?
- 46:43She just having some. Fun.
- 46:44It just feels relaxed, incongruous to what is supposed
- 46:49to be conveyed in the scene. If it wasn't for everything else
- 46:51it would have been OK I think. Maybe, but that's playful.
- 46:54But with the kiss and everything.
- 46:56Just leading him. On he can't do that.
- 46:58You shouldn't do that. No, I mean you can't because you
- 47:00did. Just be honest with everybody.
- 47:02Transparency, you know, feel about that Same way.
- 47:04I like my helicopters. That's right.
- 47:10You mentioned you've been in New York, right?
- 47:12Yeah, couple times after that moment, little sightseeing.
- 47:17Yes. It's nice.
- 47:18Yeah, it's a beautiful city. It's great time.
- 47:20Skyline. Yeah, absolutely.
- 47:22Lots of things in part of State Building.
- 47:23Yeah. It's beautiful.
- 47:25I love it. It the first time I was ever
- 47:27there, jump as fast as I could to the Empire State Building.
- 47:30Looking out terrified me. I don't like heights.
- 47:32Like your mom. Exactly.
- 47:33Yeah, that's right. That story, she was terrified
- 47:35going up. I was OK going up.
- 47:37But once I was there. I have a trick though.
- 47:39OK, look down, look straight, OK, and then gradually look
- 47:43down. OK, so you're that worked for
- 47:46me. You're looking out at distance.
- 47:49OK Yeah, Infinity, right? You can see forever in slowly
- 47:52and then as you gradually going down.
- 47:54You're not shocked with the yeah.
- 47:56Oh my God, I'm so high up. That worked for me cuz if I
- 47:59looked immediately down Vertigo messed with my brain.
- 48:02Got it? Scrunches with your toes.
- 48:03Got it, got it. These are tips and tricks buddy,
- 48:05and this brings. Back the New York music.
- 48:08Yeah, I think it's the power station.
- 48:10Feels like something out of Beverly Hills Cop.
- 48:12It does a little bit. I remember the rhythm from
- 48:14European vacation which will come.
- 48:16Off eventually, haven't seen it because I wasn't allowed to.
- 48:19Of course. Boobs.
- 48:20Exactly. Yeah.
- 48:31What I think the 80s, I think cocaine.
- 48:33Oh yeah, this big back then, still is.
- 48:35I had a lot of staying. Power, yeah, yeah, got cheaper
- 48:37now 200. Bucks worth right there.
- 48:39Yeah, that's what he says. But usually like a sinus
- 48:41cleanser. That's funny.
- 48:42That was funny. That's the kind of stuff, again,
- 48:44where the movie is at its best, I think, is in those scenes,
- 48:47fish out of water, unknowingly wrapped up in some high jinks,
- 48:51if you will, or some silliness. The rest of it doesn't work for
- 48:54me. These are the scenes that are my
- 48:56takeaways. But Sue dancing.
- 48:58Did you capture that moment? No.
- 49:00Oh my God. Honestly, not now.
- 49:02But look at it after. Huh?
- 49:04Hilarious. Sure.
- 49:05That's not good dancing. The 80s were crazy.
- 49:08Tom man, it was fun to watch. It really was.
- 49:11What's fun to watch over and over and over again is the
- 49:15tagline for the movie. Basically, here it is.
- 49:19Walking through New York, they leave and they end up getting
- 49:21accosted here. And she is terrified.
- 49:25Yeah, and why wouldn't you be? She's not a true New Yorker, I
- 49:29guess. Yeah, exactly.
- 49:30First of all, she claimed to be of all the guys got a knife.
- 49:33Yeah, it's not a knife. No, it turns out it's not a
- 49:36knife. This line was on every
- 49:39commercial, every trailer. It is.
- 49:41It was everywhere and it still is.
- 49:43It's the thing. And I think people would say it
- 49:45even if it weren't a knife. It would say, well, that's not a
- 49:47TV. That's right, like.
- 49:48I think I still use it, it would be periodically and it's never
- 49:52funny when I do it, but. No, you don't have to do it with
- 49:54an accent. I think the key.
- 49:55What I found strange in this one mix Tarzan.
- 49:58Oh yeah, yeah, one handed. And sound.
- 50:01Right now, he didn't commit. Yeah, you did not.
- 50:04No commitment. There.
- 50:05Now, Speaking of commitment, we're gonna get to a moment soon
- 50:08where she gets engaged to Richard.
- 50:11Yeah, the proposal. But not before, for the second
- 50:14time in the movie, a post traumatic make out sesh with old
- 50:20Mick Dundee. Oh.
- 50:21That's right, they do have another kissy kissy that just
- 50:24makes the situation worse for you.
- 50:25Does. This fucking pisses me off.
- 50:27Yeah, that's not cool. So they go to this party.
- 50:31Mike doesn't want to be there. He's this isn't his people.
- 50:34I don't believe that he likes her at all or that there's any
- 50:37relationship really building there.
- 50:39They've. I mean, he, like, spend some,
- 50:41Yeah, there's been some additional chemistry.
- 50:43There's been some eye locking, though, so that pisses me off.
- 50:45And then we go and within minutes of arriving at this
- 50:48party, Richard makes the big plunge.
- 50:52What the fuck, man? She's like.
- 50:54Yeah, well, she didn't say. Yes, no, but come on, she said.
- 50:58She has to buy sociation. What are you going to do?
- 51:00You're in a corner. You're in a corner, I.
- 51:02Love her hair piece by the way, I don't know what it was about
- 51:05it. Into it I don't.
- 51:06Know I just really like that look alright My wife like you
- 51:09don't like any like additional like apparel and stuff like I
- 51:12don't know yeah I love the look. Yeah, well, that sounds like
- 51:16it's a something you guys need to.
- 51:18Discuss. Yeah.
- 51:21But yeah, obviously, because mixing love with her, that's
- 51:25been made clear. Yeah, in words, maybe.
- 51:29He didn't take the proposal too well.
- 51:31No, he's gotta talk to old Gussie.
- 51:35Get Me Out of here, Gus. Who has his old driving bottle
- 51:40of booze? I'm telling you for the
- 51:42customers, for the. Customer in a brown paper bag
- 51:46for emergencies, he says. Yeah, this is Gus's time to
- 51:50shine. Does he need a time to shine
- 51:52box? So we can't spend 5 seconds
- 51:55talking to Walter in this movie? But Reginald gets a whole
- 51:59sequence in action sequence. I got upgraded to the police
- 52:02officer buddy. That's right.
- 52:03I remember vividly the boomerang looking thing, but I remember it
- 52:07being a bigger issue, like a bigger thing made of it and that
- 52:10it was Dundee that used it. So I had a completely wrong
- 52:15because it doesn't come back and it's not Dundee.
- 52:18Yeah, it seemed like a I don't know, the scene didn't seem to
- 52:22fit, but. It just doesn't really make any
- 52:24sense and it cuts right from there to his going walkabout
- 52:27again. He loves the walkabout.
- 52:29It's and he's done and obviously it happens.
- 52:31He talks about, you know, failed relationship.
- 52:33It's what you do. What I found a little bit funny
- 52:36is I'm gonna go walk about, but the first thing I'm going to do
- 52:39is get on a train. You're not walking.
- 52:42That's my point. If you're going to walk about,
- 52:43don't train about. Just going on the advice given
- 52:47from the Bellboy. Right.
- 52:48Yeah, yeah. The doorman, it's a little
- 52:51silly. And how this movie wraps up, I
- 52:52find just does not satisfy. So I want to dig into it a
- 52:56little bit, of course, But happy to.
- 52:58He walks away, goes to the subway.
- 53:00She has some revelation, I guess, that she doesn't love
- 53:03Richard, which we already knew because he's an idiot and she
- 53:06has no chemistry with him. Do we know why?
- 53:09Has she changed her mind? Is there a moment?
- 53:11No, this movie doesn't care about things like that, just
- 53:13assumes they romantically we like this guy.
- 53:16OK, I didn't feel a moment. Personally, her dad was like,
- 53:19OK, I'm supportive, do whatever you want.
- 53:21Yeah, of course, because you can't have a character.
- 53:23He's just gonna be there to forward the movement.
- 53:25And then this scene, I hate it. Yelling and then relaying the
- 53:29information. Now, you must have recognized
- 53:30somebody in this scene. There's a lot of faces.
- 53:33I don't. Know why you would assume such a
- 53:35thing? I did.
- 53:37I my God, I had to dig to find out because he's not credited.
- 53:40Sullivan Walker. Great name, right?
- 53:44He's the black guy in the subway helping relay in the relaying
- 53:48the messages, the white guy. It's the other one.
- 53:50Yeah, and I couldn't place him. No picture on IMDb.
- 53:55OK Yep. Luckily Chegg PT was there to
- 53:58hold my hand and get me to where I needed to go.
- 54:00And he played a doctor named James Harmon on the Cosby Show.
- 54:06Oh for 4 episodes. OK.
- 54:08I swear I've seen him and other stuff but his filmography is
- 54:12very short and nothing else clicked.
- 54:15Sorry. Was on Fresh Prince of Bel Air
- 54:16for one episode but I just feel I saw more.
- 54:19Like he really stood out to me. You didn't.
- 54:21Nothing. I saw nothing, but I recognized
- 54:23that you might recognize. Yeah.
- 54:24OK, that's it. That makes sense.
- 54:26And I will say, Phil, that I like this scene and not just
- 54:29because of Sullivan Walker. OK, but it helps you get
- 54:31emotional. I did the music which starts at
- 54:36the hotel. The beat.
- 54:38That's right. She gets the cab.
- 54:39She's on her way. You get it.
- 54:41Gets rid of the shoes. Yes.
- 54:42Smart move. Yeah, believe me, I know.
- 54:44I've heard heels. Halloween and it slowly amps up
- 54:48the music. Hmm, perfectly pitched like
- 54:51it's. Just And you are, yeah, you
- 54:52definitely get affected. By that exactly so I think they
- 54:55do a really good job of the manipulation of the music if you
- 54:59were as I say when it serves me Yep, I don't mind it.
- 55:01Take it in. I'm more with this relationship
- 55:04than you are much and we've talked about this several times.
- 55:07I think out of sight, which we referenced all the time for
- 55:10those who don't know that trunk that's from that movie.
- 55:13If you're not with it the rest of the movie is not going to
- 55:16bode well with you. I didn't love it but have your
- 55:20issues and then stepping on top of it, I thought it was a great
- 55:25scene. Yeah, I think.
- 55:26Sorry, I thought it was a pretty good scene.
- 55:30I hated it and ultimately in the end, I hated the movie.
- 55:33I think at the end of the day, I thought it was.
- 55:36This is a classic. Poorly paced.
- 55:38Anything interesting was so drawn out and dragged out or so
- 55:43short in supply. When it did show up, I found no
- 55:46momentum with the relationship. I found no momentum with the
- 55:49filmmaking, the characters. There's nothing in this movie
- 55:52that tells me that this was a cultural phenomenon 40 years
- 55:55ago. Like Mad Max, right?
- 55:57Like a little bit understand this.
- 55:59So maybe it's an Australian film thing for me.
- 56:01I don't want to say it too soon, but yeah, this one just failed
- 56:05on every level for me, other than obviously Paul Hogan.
- 56:08Clearly the charisma is there. Yeah, let's not deny.
- 56:11That. But I just don't see the future
- 56:14of the legs that this movie had and the cultural impact it had
- 56:17it. There's just not enough there
- 56:18for me and as a result I don't think I'll ever watch it again.
- 56:21Don't really have interest in the sequels either.
- 56:23Like it's not anything to propel me forward.
- 56:25Yeah, in some instances we've like.
- 56:27OK well I didn't like it but I wanna watch the sequel for.
- 56:30Whatever reason, like at the end of Mad Max, I like willing to
- 56:33give it another go because I want to see how it gets to Fury
- 56:36Rd. because we know it's a better movie.
- 56:38We just I think fundamentally would have to be.
- 56:40Yeah, right. But is this.
- 56:41I just think there's nothing of interest.
- 56:43I don't wanna see her ever again.
- 56:44IMDb says it's a better movie. IMDb is does not say Crocodile 2
- 56:49is better is better. No, it's not.
- 56:51So yeah, that's my take on it. I just I really felt let down
- 56:54overall. Now, David hear it.
- 56:56What are your thoughts summarizing?
- 56:57Here, I think part of the problem is we came off a really
- 57:01strong week, Groundhog Day affair.
- 57:05Obviously 93, a little bit later, but, you know, an older
- 57:08film. Yeah, as as A and as my wife
- 57:11said, classic. Good for its time.
- 57:14I don't know which movie she was referring to.
- 57:16She did say it, though. She did say it.
- 57:18OK. And I called her like, that's
- 57:19the worst answer because I used to say it and you changed me.
- 57:23I'm a better man because of you, Phil.
- 57:25There you go. I said it.
- 57:26Fantastic. I'll take it.
- 57:27And I also will say that I did not dislike this movie.
- 57:30I certainly did not like it as much as Groundhog Day because it
- 57:34had so much more going for it with themes, but this was fun.
- 57:38It was lighthearted, it aged relatively well for its time, so
- 57:42I found some enjoyment out of it.
- 57:44He is charismatic. She does sound like Annette
- 57:47Benning and you're right, but I don't think I would revisit it.
- 57:52I wouldn't go looking if I found.
- 57:53A 4K. Upgrade.
- 57:54No. Yeah, I like to see that
- 57:56alligator in 4K, but I didn't have the issues with the pacing
- 58:00like you had. I felt like we spent the right
- 58:02amount of time in Australia and then we spent the other half in
- 58:05New York like it was 5050. I thought that was good.
- 58:08Yeah. So All in all, it's a solid 7,
- 58:11solid 7, maybe a little bit less.
- 58:15That's high praise of seven if you.
- 58:16Really. But like yourself, I don't have
- 58:18interest in seeing the sequels. What?
- 58:21That was well for me. And also that does say something
- 58:24totally. That's enough.
- 58:26Like, I'm satisfied with that. One and done.
- 58:29I didn't mind the 90 minutes, but I'm not going back.
