Latest / Foul Territory / Former Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. on Mattingly replacing Thomson
Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: Hey, let's talk to one of the stars of the
- 0:04Speaker 1: Phillies show, Ruben and mar Junior former Gem of the Phillies,
- 0:07Speaker 1: joining us right now. Ruben, thank you dude for hopping
- 0:10Speaker 1: on with us. What do you got for us, what's
- 0:12Speaker 1: happening out there? And can you take us inside the
- 0:14Speaker 1: decision making process of why now and if you think
- 0:19Speaker 1: things will change for the Phillies with Don Mattingly taking over.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Well, first and foremost, let me just say something. I
- 0:25Speaker 2: have a great deal of respect for Rob Thompson. I
- 0:27Speaker 2: think he's a phenomenal baseball man, a great person, and
- 0:30Speaker 2: I think he did a hell of a job for
- 0:31Speaker 2: this organization.
- 0:32Speaker 3: But at some point, tough decisions have to be made.
- 0:36Speaker 2: They have had great expectations of this ball club and
- 0:40Speaker 2: they just had not produced, and so sometimes you just
- 0:43Speaker 2: have to make decisions right and or wrong.
- 0:48Speaker 3: You know, this is the decision that they made.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Now they're replacing him with a man I have a
- 0:51Speaker 2: great deal of respect for as well, and.
- 0:53Speaker 3: Don Mattingley, and so.
- 0:55Speaker 2: Again, not all that surprised that this happened, disappointed for
- 0:59Speaker 2: the man who got to let go, but you know,
- 1:02Speaker 2: this is part of the game, and I think Rob
- 1:04Speaker 2: Thompson knows this as well as anybody. He worked for
- 1:06Speaker 2: George stein Better for many, many years and he sort
- 1:08Speaker 2: of understands how this stuff works. But he did a
- 1:13Speaker 2: lot for the Phillies, and I listen, I think Dave
- 1:15Speaker 2: Dombrowski was, you know, under a great deal of pressure too,
- 1:19Speaker 2: because this is a team that's grossly underachieved in every
- 1:23Speaker 2: aspect of the game. I do think that there are
- 1:26Speaker 2: other people on staff, and there are other people and
- 1:28Speaker 2: players in particular, who you know, are going to be
- 1:31Speaker 2: under the gun. I mean, the players did not perform,
- 1:34Speaker 2: and there's some damn good players who have not performed,
- 1:37Speaker 2: and unfortunately, you know, somebody had to take the fall.
- 1:41Speaker 2: In this case, it was Rob Thompson. But I do
- 1:44Speaker 2: think that there's gonna be scrutiny across the board, the
- 1:46Speaker 2: analytics folks, the pitching coach, the hitting coach, the whole
- 1:50Speaker 2: nine yards. I think everybody is being evaluated. That's part
- 1:54Speaker 2: of the game. You're being evaluated all the time, and
- 1:58Speaker 2: all aspects of the the ball club have been sort
- 2:01Speaker 2: of underachieving, and I do think it's you know, you're
- 2:05Speaker 2: going to continue to have those sorts of assessments as
- 2:09Speaker 2: you move forward in this season.
- 2:12Speaker 4: Rubin what goes into the GM, the Director of Baseball's
- 2:15Speaker 4: finally making this decision? Right, does the fans in all
- 2:19Speaker 4: the heat that's been in Philly the last couple of weeks,
- 2:22Speaker 4: go into this? Is that what makes you pull the trigger?
- 2:24Speaker 4: Is it just meeting with the owner that makes you
- 2:27Speaker 4: pull the trigger?
- 2:27Speaker 3: What is it that.
- 2:28Speaker 4: Finally says to the GM President of Baseball Ops, Okay,
- 2:32Speaker 4: it's time to go in a different direction.
- 2:36Speaker 5: A Jay.
- 2:36Speaker 2: I think it's one of those things where I mean,
- 2:38Speaker 2: you basically get information from everybody, whether it's the people
- 2:42Speaker 2: above you, the people below you, and the people with you,
- 2:45Speaker 2: and I think it's a all encompassing decision. And believe me,
- 2:50Speaker 2: I've been there and done it, and I can tell
- 2:53Speaker 2: you that these are some of the most difficult decisions
- 2:56Speaker 2: to make because because of the fondness that you have
- 2:59Speaker 2: and the relationships that you build with your people, and to.
- 3:03Speaker 3: Make this sort of you know, this sort of move
- 3:07Speaker 3: is not easy.
- 3:08Speaker 2: But I think that you gather as much information and see,
- 3:11Speaker 2: you know, a change needs to be made.
- 3:14Speaker 3: So obviously the players are not performing.
- 3:16Speaker 2: You can't get rid of twenty six players, and so
- 3:20Speaker 2: someone has to take the fall, and quite often it
- 3:23Speaker 2: is the manager who does.
- 3:25Speaker 3: And so this this is one of those situations.
- 3:29Speaker 2: And you know, it's in the hopes that having a
- 3:33Speaker 2: new voice in the clubhouse making, you know, making different
- 3:37Speaker 2: types of decisions perhaps will help this team get better.
- 3:41Speaker 2: I've made a decision in twenty ten to remove Milton Thompson,
- 3:46Speaker 2: who was a very good friend of mine and a teammate,
- 3:49Speaker 2: out of that position of the hitting coach. It happened
- 3:52Speaker 2: to turn our team around. I don't think it was
- 3:54Speaker 2: because of that move, but a different voice. I think
- 3:57Speaker 2: it was Greg Gross that we put in place. It
- 4:00Speaker 2: just sort of changed the dynamics of things and we
- 4:02Speaker 2: ended up, you know, playing very.
- 4:04Speaker 3: Much better after that.
- 4:05Speaker 2: You saw it happen when Joe Giardi was let go
- 4:08Speaker 2: and Rob Thompson took over. So sometimes just a different
- 4:12Speaker 2: voice can help move the team forward.
- 4:15Speaker 3: We'll see what happens in this case.
- 4:17Speaker 6: I want to hear your side of it from when
- 4:19Speaker 6: you fired or came to agreement with Chuck, because I
- 4:23Speaker 6: was a player on the team at the same time
- 4:25Speaker 6: Charlie Manual and decided you decided to go with Ryan
- 4:28Speaker 6: Samberg because as a player, side of it. I felt
- 4:32Speaker 6: like I failed Charlie. We didn't play good enough to
- 4:35Speaker 6: keep his job. And I remember Rhino saying the same thing, like,
- 4:39Speaker 6: as a coach, I feel like I failed Charlie because
- 4:44Speaker 6: we didn't win games and he's part of that whole team.
- 4:47Speaker 6: Why is the after you say that part, after you
- 4:50Speaker 6: say you're part of firing Charlie is why does the
- 4:54Speaker 6: why does baseball just feel like, Okay, well, yeah, we
- 4:57Speaker 6: just got to go ahead and fire this guy because
- 4:59Speaker 6: it's twenty eight games in. You built the team, you
- 5:02Speaker 6: made this team who they are, and yet you're firing
- 5:06Speaker 6: the one guy who's trying to keep the clubhouse together.
- 5:10Speaker 2: I think it was a totally different situation when we
- 5:13Speaker 2: let we decided to sort of reassign Charlie Manuel and
- 5:16Speaker 2: took him out of that position. Yes, I know that
- 5:19Speaker 2: the players were not happy with me because he meant
- 5:21Speaker 2: so much to them, and I was not happy. I mean,
- 5:23Speaker 2: if you remember that press conference was pretty emotional for
- 5:25Speaker 2: me because I consider him a great friend and a
- 5:28Speaker 2: great manager. But it was a situation for me that
- 5:32Speaker 2: you know, I felt like I had failed him with
- 5:34Speaker 2: the talent that I had given him, and I felt
- 5:36Speaker 2: like it was almost in a lot of ways, a
- 5:39Speaker 2: relief to get him out of that position so that
- 5:41Speaker 2: we can bring someone else for the transition that we
- 5:44Speaker 2: had to make. And you know, listen, I remember going
- 5:47Speaker 2: into that clubhouse and telling the coach, he saiff, Hey, sorry, guys,
- 5:51Speaker 2: this is what I've dealt. You try to do the
- 5:53Speaker 2: best with this group as you possibly can. I think
- 5:57Speaker 2: this is a different situation because the expectations are way higher.
- 6:01Speaker 2: This is a team that has a three hundred million
- 6:02Speaker 2: dollar payroll and a team that where the expectations to
- 6:06Speaker 2: have success, you know, especially in Philadelphia and this this
- 6:11Speaker 2: type of marketplace.
- 6:13Speaker 3: You know, you're you're.
- 6:14Speaker 2: You put a lot of you put a lot of
- 6:16Speaker 2: ducats into this ball club. And there's some really talented
- 6:19Speaker 2: players here. They're just not getting it.
- 6:21Speaker 3: Done right now.
- 6:21Speaker 2: And and uh, I think that Dave Nebrowski probably didn't
- 6:26Speaker 2: want to let this season get away. And there's still
- 6:28Speaker 2: an opportunity to bounce back and get into a wild
- 6:31Speaker 2: card race. It's totally different than it was, you know,
- 6:34Speaker 2: a couple of decades ago, where or even a decade ago,
- 6:37Speaker 2: where you have an opportunity to get in that third
- 6:39Speaker 2: wild card and who knows. If you're playing hot baseball
- 6:41Speaker 2: and you got some quality teams and quality arms, you
- 6:44Speaker 2: got a chance to win. So I think Dave Dombrowski decided, well,
- 6:48Speaker 2: this is the time to make this move, and hopefully
- 6:50Speaker 2: it'll spark this team and shake them up a little
- 6:52Speaker 2: bit and maybe move it, move it forward so they
- 6:54Speaker 2: can start playing better baseball.
- 6:57Speaker 6: We love our Dogabella, who's really just accounts cushion.
- 6:59Speaker 1: In our house, and you would do anything for her.

- 7:58Speaker 6: Would GM ever make a decision like that US firing
- 8:00Speaker 6: somebody to save his own neck?
- 8:04Speaker 2: I think it's possible, but I don't think that in
- 8:07Speaker 2: the in the case of David de Brown's game, he's
- 8:09Speaker 2: been around too long, that's not that's not his modus operandi.
- 8:12Speaker 3: I mean, this guy's got a Hall of Fame GM.
- 8:14Speaker 2: I think he's had a lot of success in the game.
- 8:17Speaker 3: He's had a lot of success here in Philadelphia. I
- 8:21Speaker 3: what has it happened? Will it happen? Maybe? But I
- 8:27Speaker 3: certainly don't think that that is the case in this case.
- 8:31Speaker 3: M okay, all right?
- 8:34Speaker 1: Team wise, Rubin, is there anything that you would look
- 8:37Speaker 1: at or do? I know you can't really make trades
- 8:40Speaker 1: or do too much. We were going over this earlier,
- 8:42Speaker 1: but lineup switches and then eventually trade deadline would be
- 8:46Speaker 1: around the corner. If this team stays relevant enough, what
- 8:51Speaker 1: can you do or is it one of those where
- 8:52Speaker 1: it's like, hey, the pitching staff should recover Wheeler just
- 8:56Speaker 1: came back. They need to hit.
- 9:00Speaker 2: To me, it's the pitching staff has to be.
- 9:03Speaker 3: The pitching staff.
- 9:05Speaker 2: Pitching and defense are the two things that you absolutely
- 9:08Speaker 2: have to have to contend every day. And the pitching staff,
- 9:12Speaker 2: the starting pitching staff in particular, is the one that
- 9:15Speaker 2: I've sort of most disappointed in right now because they
- 9:19Speaker 2: have not lived up to the bargain. And you know,
- 9:22Speaker 2: when you have names like and it's great to have
- 9:24Speaker 2: Wheeler back, you didn't have him. When you have Sanchez
- 9:27Speaker 2: and Lozardo and Nola and Wheeler and a very good
- 9:31Speaker 2: young arm and Andrew Paynter, this is a staff that
- 9:34Speaker 2: should be much better. And the fact that their eer
- 9:36Speaker 2: A is one of the worst, if not the worst,
- 9:38Speaker 2: in the league, and all the numbers across the board,
- 9:41Speaker 2: that's a concern. I think part of the issue here
- 9:44Speaker 2: is their overall defense. They've not been helped a whole
- 9:48Speaker 2: lot by their defense. Yes, a lot of teams are
- 9:52Speaker 2: having a lot of success against these guys, but defensively
- 9:55Speaker 2: they haven't really made the plays that are necessary. I
- 9:58Speaker 2: don't know, I have some question about myself about some
- 10:01Speaker 2: of the defensive positioning. I you know, I use my
- 10:05Speaker 2: eyes to make make certain assessments of what's going on.
- 10:08Speaker 2: A lot of balls falling in in certain spots that
- 10:11Speaker 2: maybe should not, a lot of ball plays not being made.
- 10:15Speaker 3: So to me, you know, it's a combination of things.
- 10:19Speaker 2: I do think that this staff, this pitching staff, is
- 10:22Speaker 2: way too talented to be held down all season long.
- 10:27Speaker 2: And I do predict that they will get better and
- 10:30Speaker 2: when and if they do, this team's going to be
- 10:33Speaker 2: much better for it. It'll take the heat off the
- 10:35Speaker 2: hitting a little bit because when you're behind, as you
- 10:37Speaker 2: know Aja, when you're behind and Cratsy, you're behind early
- 10:41Speaker 2: every single game and you're trying to climb out of
- 10:44Speaker 2: the out of the seller so to speak, every single
- 10:46Speaker 2: game down three or four or five or six runs.
- 10:49Speaker 3: It makes it really difficult for the offense to click.
- 10:52Speaker 4: Yeah, wasn't the defensive problem in the last few years.
- 10:55Speaker 4: Isn't that the we got to get rid of Castillanos.
- 10:57Speaker 4: You can't play defense right where we're about Boem's defense,
- 11:01Speaker 4: worried about you know, left field with marsh and whoever's
- 11:04Speaker 4: in centerfield defense. Hasn't this been a thing, but they
- 11:07Speaker 4: didn't do anything to correct it this offseason, did they.
- 11:12Speaker 3: Well?
- 11:12Speaker 2: Trade Turner, I got to give a lot of credit
- 11:14Speaker 2: to Trade Turner for last year. He how much he
- 11:17Speaker 2: improved from from twenty twenty four to twenty twenty five.
- 11:21Speaker 2: I haven't seen all the metrics on where he is
- 11:24Speaker 2: defensively this year.
- 11:25Speaker 3: I don't think it's been the same.
- 11:27Speaker 2: There have been some errors and some mistakes in the
- 11:30Speaker 2: middle infield that you.
- 11:31Speaker 3: Sort of didn't anticipate happening.
- 11:33Speaker 2: And they have a new center fielder in Crawford who
- 11:36Speaker 2: I think will develop into equality and center fielder, but
- 11:40Speaker 2: he hasn't quite gotten there.
- 11:42Speaker 3: He's playing deeper.
- 11:43Speaker 2: There's a lot of balls that are that are dropping
- 11:45Speaker 2: in on him just because he moved back on the
- 11:48Speaker 2: ball maybe a little bit better than he does coming in.
- 11:51Speaker 2: So there's there's some elements there. I do believe in
- 11:53Speaker 2: the corner guys defensively, as far as the left fielder
- 11:56Speaker 2: and the right fielder, I think marsh is a solid
- 11:58Speaker 2: left fielder, Garcia is outstanding in right field, and uh
- 12:03Speaker 2: And I think actually boom And on the corners in
- 12:06Speaker 2: the infield, boom And and uh Harper are actually really
- 12:10Speaker 2: improved Boom Bom has been. He was a guy that
- 12:13Speaker 2: for me, you know, there was some question early in
- 12:16Speaker 2: his career whether or not this guy could be an
- 12:18Speaker 2: everyday championship calver third basement. But he's actually gotten better
- 12:21Speaker 2: and better and over the years. And Harper's been very
- 12:24Speaker 2: good at first base. So there are some defensive metrics.
- 12:28Speaker 2: I don't know if there's the positioning. I'm not really
- 12:31Speaker 2: sure how to break it all down, but there are
- 12:34Speaker 2: there are a whole lot of balls that are being made,
- 12:38Speaker 2: you know, that are not contacted all that hard, that
- 12:41Speaker 2: are falling in. I'm not sure what the total answer
- 12:44Speaker 2: is there, but it's certainly something to uh to take
- 12:47Speaker 2: a look at.
- 12:48Speaker 6: I mean, like Charlie said, you gotta hit, and a
- 12:52Speaker 6: lot of guys who hit, and they ain't hitting right now,
- 12:55Speaker 6: so we got to get the hitting season. Is this
- 12:58Speaker 6: team gonna figure it out or is there a systemic
- 13:03Speaker 6: issue of the fact that they're hitting some homers but
- 13:07Speaker 6: they have low batting average, low amount of pitches per
- 13:11Speaker 6: at bat. I think they're the lowest amount of pitches
- 13:13Speaker 6: per at bat, some of the highest chase chase rate
- 13:18Speaker 6: after the first pitch, Like there's some stark bad things
- 13:23Speaker 6: that are going on. Do you see that change in
- 13:25Speaker 6: the offense happening or is it Well, I just know
- 13:28Speaker 6: these guys are good, so they have to be able
- 13:30Speaker 6: to change.
- 13:31Speaker 2: I do think that there's some some not panic, but
- 13:35Speaker 2: I think there's there's a situation now that.
- 13:37Speaker 3: These guys have sort of fallen.
- 13:38Speaker 2: But you know, some of the players, I mean, Marsha's
- 13:41Speaker 2: swinging the bat well, Harper swinging the bat well. Other
- 13:44Speaker 2: than that, not a whole lot of like consistent production.
- 13:48Speaker 2: One of the things that I noticed from this team
- 13:51Speaker 2: that I've been watching is that it just feels like
- 13:55Speaker 2: wherever whatever the count is, whether it's one to oher,
- 14:00Speaker 2: one two three, one three to zero, it almost feels
- 14:04Speaker 2: like and not necessarily to a man, but in a
- 14:06Speaker 2: lot of situations that the players are swinging the bat
- 14:10Speaker 2: like it's an O two count, like it's almost like
- 14:12Speaker 2: you're giving the credit too much credit to the pitchers
- 14:17Speaker 2: and listen. I think part of it is because guys
- 14:21Speaker 2: maybe trying to press a little bit, trying to do
- 14:24Speaker 2: too much.
- 14:25Speaker 3: They know that there's expectations on them.
- 14:28Speaker 2: These are really good hitters with really excellent backs of
- 14:32Speaker 2: their baseball cards and I don't see that this is
- 14:36Speaker 2: necessarily an issue of them getting really old, really fast.
- 14:40Speaker 2: I just feel like the overall approach when they get
- 14:42Speaker 2: in the box, I don't think that they're able to
- 14:44Speaker 2: relax a lot.
- 14:45Speaker 3: You remember this Cratsy when when Charlie Mariner.
- 14:49Speaker 2: Used to say, you know, you've got to be relaxed,
- 14:51Speaker 2: and you can't be thinking too much when you're hitting.
- 14:54Speaker 3: And I think what's happening is two things.
- 14:56Speaker 2: I think they're thinking way too much, and I do
- 14:59Speaker 2: think that they're not very relaxed, and.
- 15:01Speaker 3: That's a that's a tough way to hit.
- 15:03Speaker 2: And uh and I see that in not just one
- 15:05Speaker 2: or two guys, I see it in several.
- 15:10Speaker 4: Rubin, was Alex Score really an option here or was that?
- 15:13Speaker 4: I mean, I know they might have reached out to him,
- 15:15Speaker 4: but was that really an option? And were you did
- 15:17Speaker 4: you like the way his firing went down in Boston?
- 15:21Speaker 4: I know you worked there for a little bit, so
- 15:22Speaker 4: you're kind of a part of that. But was he
- 15:24Speaker 4: really an option? Did they say, Alex, will you take
- 15:26Speaker 4: this note? Okay, Donnie, you're a choice now?
- 15:30Speaker 2: In my mind, I don't think that he was in
- 15:33Speaker 2: He might have been an option they may have reached
- 15:35Speaker 2: out to him.
- 15:36Speaker 3: I don't know that he necessarily was offered that job.
- 15:39Speaker 2: With Don Manningly sitting right there, it just doesn't really
- 15:43Speaker 2: make that much sense to me. Yes, I was a
- 15:46Speaker 2: little surprised by the Alex Korra decision, but no one
- 15:50Speaker 2: really knows what's going on in the inner workings of
- 15:53Speaker 2: that front office.
- 15:55Speaker 3: I certainly don't know Craig Breslo. I don't know how
- 15:57Speaker 3: what he was.
- 15:58Speaker 2: Thinking and why he was making that move, but there
- 16:00Speaker 2: had to be a reason. I was again just a
- 16:04Speaker 2: little surprised by it as well, But listen, this is
- 16:08Speaker 2: part of the game. These are tough decisions. I don't
- 16:11Speaker 2: know that he and I know that was being reported
- 16:14Speaker 2: out there that Alex Corr was offered the job. I
- 16:17Speaker 2: don't know that that necessarily was true. I couldn't tell
- 16:21Speaker 2: you because I haven't talked to Alex and I haven't
- 16:23Speaker 2: talked to Dave Dombrowski about it. But with a man
- 16:26Speaker 2: like Don Manningley sitting there, I would have it would
- 16:29Speaker 2: have been strange for him to be offered the job
- 16:32Speaker 2: and then have Don Manningley then become the bench coach
- 16:36Speaker 2: for him, or what have you.
- 16:38Speaker 3: That just seems like a strange dynamic to me.
- 16:41Speaker 2: And uh and and so if it feels a little
- 16:43Speaker 2: far fetched, but hey, anything's possible. I'm not in those conversations.
- 16:49Speaker 2: And listen, I have a great deal of respect for
- 16:52Speaker 2: Don Manningly. I love the way he managed the Miami Marlins.
- 16:56Speaker 2: He's had managerial experience. He's a Hall of Fame baseball player,
- 16:59Speaker 2: yet automatic cachet. And uh and I you know, if
- 17:03Speaker 2: you're gonna replace a gentleman like Rob Thompson and a
- 17:06Speaker 2: person who has had a lot of success and understands
- 17:08Speaker 2: the game with another person, uh, Don Mattingly is as
- 17:12Speaker 2: good a choice as you can make, because he is
- 17:14Speaker 2: also somebody I have a great deal of respect for,
- 17:16Speaker 2: as far as being the type of person he is
- 17:19Speaker 2: and the type of baseball man he is.
- 17:22Speaker 5: Todd Father, it's getting a little warm out, and that
- 17:25Speaker 5: means let's hit some concerts, let's hit some baseball games.
- 17:28Speaker 5: And where am I going to go to find those tickets?
- 17:30Speaker 5: And if you want to sing the answer you can, We're.
- 17:33Speaker 7: Going to seek Hey, hey, listen. Ultimately, at the end
- 17:36Speaker 7: of the day, it is getting warmer, and people want
- 17:38Speaker 7: to leave the house and it's time to leave, go
- 17:40Speaker 7: see a ball game. I guess where you can find
- 17:42Speaker 7: the best tickets, best spots, best places to go.
- 17:46Speaker 3: Seat.
- 17:46Speaker 7: Geeks got it all, man. They got their red and

- 18:19Speaker 1: you to see Geek MLB's official ticket marketplace.
- 18:24Speaker 6: I asked this to Ken Rosenthal. You know these guys,
- 18:27Speaker 6: what's going to be the difference? You saw it you
- 18:29Speaker 6: were with the you were on the broadcast team with
- 18:32Speaker 6: me when they got rid of Joe Girardi. They're different
- 18:35Speaker 6: Joe Girardi was a different person than Rob Thompson. Ken
- 18:37Speaker 6: Rosenthal said, you know, I don't see them in the
- 18:40Speaker 6: clubhouse as much, but I know both guys. They're very
- 18:43Speaker 6: similar people. What's going to be the difference when Don
- 18:46Speaker 6: Mattingly comes in to replace Topper here?
- 18:49Speaker 3: That's a great question, and uh, I think it's just
- 18:52Speaker 3: a different voice.
- 18:52Speaker 2: I do believe in that, in the fact that they
- 18:55Speaker 2: have very similar personalities.
- 18:58Speaker 3: They're different people.
- 18:59Speaker 2: Obviously I want to disrespect either one of them, but
- 19:02Speaker 2: as far as how they treat their players, how they
- 19:05Speaker 2: handle themselves.
- 19:08Speaker 3: And the type of people, they are very very similar guys.
- 19:12Speaker 2: I think Dave Dombrowski and John Middleton are hopeful that
- 19:16Speaker 2: you know, just a different voice and maybe some you know,
- 19:19Speaker 2: slightly different ideas will change some things around. I don't
- 19:24Speaker 2: know that that will happen, but I'm certainly as a
- 19:28Speaker 2: as a you know, a long time employee and a
- 19:31Speaker 2: fan of the Phillies, I certainly hope so. But again,
- 19:36Speaker 2: and sometimes that's all it takes is a change. Like
- 19:40Speaker 2: I said before about the move that we made early
- 19:42Speaker 2: in twenty ten, sometimes just a different voice will will
- 19:46Speaker 2: catapult this team and maybe jolt the players into understanding that, hey,
- 19:51Speaker 2: you guys got to kick it into all.
- 19:54Speaker 6: Right, doom and gloom last doom and gloom question, it
- 19:58Speaker 6: doesn't turn around. This is a historically bad season at
- 20:02Speaker 6: the end of the year with this payroll. Are Phillies
- 20:05Speaker 6: fans looking at the twenty twelve to two thousand and
- 20:09Speaker 6: nineteen the start of another just abysmal period in Phillies
- 20:14Speaker 6: baseball because of the fact that they have Harper for
- 20:17Speaker 6: nineteen more years, they have Trey Turner for eighteen more years,
- 20:21Speaker 6: they have Schwarber for four more years, like they just
- 20:24Speaker 6: signed JT's inc.
- 20:26Speaker 3: Is still wet?
- 20:29Speaker 2: I don't think so, because I think the level of
- 20:31Speaker 2: talent still there and I see I know some of
- 20:34Speaker 2: these guys that the the odometers are starting to click
- 20:37Speaker 2: on them. But they do have some talented kids. The
- 20:42Speaker 2: Aiden Miller kids is going to be coming. I know
- 20:43Speaker 2: he's got some back issues. They have Painter, they have
- 20:47Speaker 2: a guy like Crawford. So there's some play young players
- 20:50Speaker 2: there that are still under contract that I think are
- 20:53Speaker 2: pretty darn good, who are going to be under contract
- 20:56Speaker 2: for some time. Is there is there They're a fear
- 21:00Speaker 2: of that the of that Cliff, I guess there is.
- 21:04Speaker 2: But I think as far as overall talent and the
- 21:06Speaker 2: fact that even though they have the dominant readings are
- 21:09Speaker 2: starting to go north, I do think that these guys
- 21:12Speaker 2: take care of themselves in a way that's sort of
- 21:15Speaker 2: unprecedented as far as how they eat and how they
- 21:19Speaker 2: you know, whether they stand at night. These guys aren't
- 21:21Speaker 2: going out and partying like like we once did. They
- 21:25Speaker 2: these guys take care of themselves physically much better than
- 21:28Speaker 2: than than.
- 21:29Speaker 3: We ever did.
- 21:30Speaker 2: And so I feel like there's a there's still a
- 21:33Speaker 2: window for these guys to continue to have success, but
- 21:36Speaker 2: it's a matter of just getting it done on the
- 21:38Speaker 2: field and relaxing and playing baseball.
- 21:41Speaker 1: Hey, Ruben, last one for me, how would it go
- 21:44Speaker 1: if you had a kid to manage?
- 21:48Speaker 3: Uh?
- 21:48Speaker 1: Well wait, actually flip this. If you were running a
- 21:52Speaker 1: team or you were coaching a team and then you
- 21:54Speaker 1: were being told what to do by your kid, that
- 21:58Speaker 1: is what is partially going to happen right now. And
- 22:00Speaker 1: I don't want to overlook that. I just thought of
- 22:03Speaker 1: that at the buzzer. I was like, hold on, this
- 22:04Speaker 1: is the cool story, but what if there is real
- 22:08Speaker 1: dissension Donnie's a pretty laid back dude, But I just
- 22:11Speaker 1: think it's a funny dynamic. His son, Preston's doing a
- 22:14Speaker 1: nice job in the front office as the general manager.
- 22:17Speaker 1: It is a prominent part of the front office day
- 22:19Speaker 1: to day operations, and now his dad is managing the team.
- 22:24Speaker 3: Well.
- 22:24Speaker 2: I had a sort of a same similar situation with
- 22:27Speaker 2: me and my dad because my dad was actually part
- 22:30Speaker 2: of the Phillies organization when I became the assistant GM,
- 22:33Speaker 2: and my dad was actually one of our infield instructors,
- 22:38Speaker 2: and he also at some point was the manager of
- 22:41Speaker 2: one of our lower.
- 22:42Speaker 3: Minor league teams. So I've been there and done it.
- 22:45Speaker 2: I think that these guys respect each other very much
- 22:49Speaker 2: and care about each other very much. But I also
- 22:52Speaker 2: think that there's I think that there's probably a very
- 22:56Speaker 2: healthy you know, it sounds strange, but it's a you know,
- 22:59Speaker 2: pressed Manningly did his thing on his own. He didn't
- 23:02Speaker 2: do what he's done in the game because of his dad.
- 23:06Speaker 2: He did it because of the love of the game
- 23:08Speaker 2: and vice versa. I mean, you know, Don Mattingly did
- 23:12Speaker 2: his job and is the person who he is because
- 23:14Speaker 2: he's Don Mattingly. So I think that there's they will
- 23:18Speaker 2: they will separate things, they will be they will be
- 23:21Speaker 2: professional about it, and I think it's a really cool
- 23:23Speaker 2: dynamic to be honest with you.
- 23:25Speaker 6: Wait, I have one quick one at the end. I
- 23:28Speaker 6: just saw David the other day, and why is he
- 23:31Speaker 6: so much taller than you? We played against this team.
- 23:33Speaker 6: Why is that is not fair?
- 23:36Speaker 3: Who are you talking about?
- 23:37Speaker 6: Your Broham?
- 23:39Speaker 3: Oh?
- 23:39Speaker 2: My brother, he got all the jeans man. My grandfather
- 23:42Speaker 2: was six'. Five he was a big monster From. CUBA
- 23:45Speaker 2: i got my dad's hype. Man And i'm shrinking, exponentially
- 23:48Speaker 2: SO i totally you, KNOW i got totally screwed out
- 23:51Speaker 2: of the.
- 23:51Speaker 6: DEAL i gave him a hug and he actually doesn't
- 23:54Speaker 6: have women hands like. You he's got like a man
- 23:56Speaker 6: hand and LIKE i gave him a, hug and we're like,
- 23:59Speaker 6: cheeked cheek, like and you're just you're just so much.
- 24:03Speaker 6: Shorter you're more of a utility. Guy he's more of a.
- 24:05Speaker 3: Power, guy no, doubt no.
- 24:07Speaker 2: Doubt in fact he was as a, youth he was
- 24:09Speaker 2: a way better player THAN i.
- 24:10Speaker 3: WAS i just got.
