- 0:00Gospel John, the 1st chapter, the sixth verse says there came
- 0:03a man sent from God. That's the verse we're looking
- 0:08at last week and this week. We are slowly making our way
- 0:11through John's gospel. This is week #10 and we're only
- 0:15on verse #6 so it's going to take us a while to get through
- 0:18the entire gospel. But that's OK.
- 0:20There's no hurry. And we're only going to take the
- 0:23first part of that verse. Verse 6, There came a man.
- 0:28The question is what kind of man came?
- 0:31What kind of man was sent from God?
- 0:33That's the question. And the unique thing about this
- 0:36is that Jesus answers that question by saying the greatest
- 0:39man ever born of a woman is John the Baptist.
- 0:43Greatest man ever, greater than Moses, greater than Elijah,
- 0:46greater than David, greater than Jeremiah.
- 0:51The greatest man born of a woman is the man sent from God.
- 0:57John the Baptist, the greatest of all commendations comes to
- 1:00John. Christ commends him extremely,
- 1:06extremely well in terms that we would never even think to
- 1:11describe someone, but Jesus does.
- 1:15And so this great commendation comes to to John the Baptist.
- 1:19And so we have to ask, to answer ourselves this question, what
- 1:22kind of man is the greatest man born of a woman?
- 1:28And the Gospels tell us about this man, John the Baptist.
- 1:33And so we want to describe him to you.
- 1:35We're looking at the peculiarity of the man we told you.
- 1:38We're going to talk about his identity, his ministry, his his
- 1:41testimony and his legacy. But we must first tackle his
- 1:44peculiarity. What makes him so peculiar?
- 1:47What makes him odd? What makes him so bizarre?
- 1:51What makes him so outrageous? What makes him so different than
- 1:55everybody else? What separates John from
- 1:58everyone else that's ever existed?
- 2:01For Jesus to say that the greatest man born of a woman is
- 2:06John the Baptist. Well, we began last week by
- 2:10telling you that we have 8 principles that will describe
- 2:14him for you. We covered seven of them last
- 2:17week. We'll cover the 8th 1 today.
- 2:20But that's not all inclusive. That's just the tip of the
- 2:23iceberg to help you introduce, introduce to you this man, John
- 2:27the Baptist, this forerunner to the Messiah.
- 2:31So as you recall, last week we told you that principle number
- 2:34one was this is that he was uncompromising in his message.
- 2:40That's principle number 1. He was uncompromising in his
- 2:45message. John never backed down, never
- 2:48backed away from the truth of the Gospel.
- 2:51The Bible says in John one verse #8 that he came to testify about
- 2:56the light. In John 1011, it says he came to
- 2:58talk about nothing but the truth.
- 3:01So John's whole ministry was to preach the truth about the
- 3:04light. He did it fearlessly, He did it
- 3:07faithfully, He did it forcefully, he did it fervently,
- 3:11but he always told the truth. He was uncompromising in his
- 3:16message. And if we are going to be men of
- 3:19God, men like John the Baptist, because he actually becomes a a
- 3:23model for biblical manliness. Think about that.
- 3:26If if he is the greatest man born of a woman, he becomes the
- 3:30quintessential example for manliness in the Bible.
- 3:34So it ladies, if you're looking for a man, look for this kind of
- 3:37man. If you're a man, you need to be
- 3:39this kind of man. If you're a father, you need to
- 3:42raise these kinds of boys to be these kinds of men.
- 3:45Then they might understand true biblical manliness.
- 3:49People that are uncompromising in their message.
- 3:54When Jesus said, when you went down to the Jordan, what did you
- 3:56go to see? A Reed blowing in the wind.
- 3:59Somebody tossed to and fro, somebody changes his message to
- 4:04whoever comes to talk to him. Nope.
- 4:07Same message, same person, never compromising, always speaking
- 4:12the truth. He came in the spirit and power
- 4:14of Elijah. They came to preach that truth
- 4:17uncompromisingly. So that was principle number
- 4:21one. Principle number 2 is that he
- 4:23was unorthodox in his mannerisms, completely
- 4:27unorthodox in his mannerisms, Different than everybody else.
- 4:32The way he dressed, the way he spoke through the things that he
- 4:37did. Remember John was in in line to
- 4:41be a priest. His father was Zacharias and so
- 4:46he was in line of the priesthood.
- 4:48But but his dress was the contradiction to the priesthood.
- 4:52The way he lived his life was was one of self denial, not self
- 4:56indulgence like the religious leaders of his day.
- 5:00His whole life was a contradiction to the religious
- 5:05business of the day. And that's why he ate locusts
- 5:10and and wild honey and and that's why the Bible says that
- 5:14in Luke one verse 17, that no wine would come up on his lips
- 5:17because he would take it. A Nazarite vow, a vow for life.
- 5:22Completely unorthodox, completely unusual, but this is
- 5:27John the Baptist and he came baptizing Jews and what he did
- 5:35to Jews was what Jews did to Gentiles when Gentiles wanted to
- 5:39convert to Judaism. But instead these were Jews
- 5:41coming down to the Jordan River. These were Jews being convinced
- 5:45that they were separated from their God, that they, they
- 5:47weren't a part of who God really wants them to be.
- 5:51And even though they're descendants of Abraham, even
- 5:53though they, they are the seed of Abraham, they are, they are
- 5:56far from God. And they began being baptized by
- 6:00confessing their sins that they were separated from their God.
- 6:03Completely unorthodox in all of his mannerisms.
- 6:07Again, that was that was last week and then #3 was that he was
- 6:11unequalled among men, unequalled among men, unparalleled among
- 6:18men, unrivalled among men. Nobody like John.
- 6:22Why he he was filled with the spirit from his mother's womb
- 6:27that's unequalled among men. He came in the spirit and power
- 6:31of Elijah. He came as, as his father said,
- 6:34the the prophet of El Elian, the God Most High.
- 6:40He was, He was unequal to among men, so much so that Christ said
- 6:44he was the greatest born of a woman.
- 6:48Then #4 We told you that he was unlimited in his mission.
- 6:55In other words, he realized that he had a mission to accomplish
- 6:59and that was to be the forerunner to the Messiah.
- 7:02So whether he was speaking to Jews or whether he's speaking
- 7:05to, to to Herod, the king, who was an idiomian, who was the
- 7:08descendant of Esau. He was an Edomite and they hated
- 7:12the Jews. He he still in a very loving
- 7:15way, would, would reprimand the king.
- 7:16He would tell the king that he was living in an immoral
- 7:19relationship with his half sister, who was The Who was
- 7:23married to his brother, and that he committed all this
- 7:26wickedness. And, and John would confront
- 7:29Herod. Because in all reality, if you
- 7:33love somebody, you're going to tell them the truth about their
- 7:36sin and how they need to get right with the true and living
- 7:39God. So John didn't care about your
- 7:42ethnicity. He didn't care about your social
- 7:44background. He didn't care if you were poor
- 7:46or rich. He didn't care what it was.
- 7:49You needed to hear the gospel. You need to hear the truth.
- 7:52His mission was an unlimited mission.
- 7:56And then #4 he was uninhibited in his ministry.
- 8:03Nothing stopped him, not even the king.
- 8:07Or the king would silence his voice by having him beheaded at
- 8:11the request of his his daughter, which came through Herodias,
- 8:17Herod's wife. But the fact of the matter is,
- 8:20is that John was uninhibited. He didn't back down from
- 8:25confronting Herod, confronting anyone about their sin,
- 8:28confronting the religious establishment, you brood of
- 8:31Vipers who who told you to flee from the wrath to come.
- 8:34He, he was completely uninhibited.
- 8:38He would not back down even in the midst of of horrendous
- 8:43circumstances, the fear of losing his life.
- 8:46He was uninhibited in his ministry.
- 8:50And then we told you number six, that he was UN unpopular with
- 8:58the multitudes. Unpopular with the multitudes.
- 9:02And I'll be honest with you, I got some pushback from this last
- 9:04week from several of you. Well, how could it be unpopular
- 9:08among the multitudes? I mean, Herod wouldn't kill him
- 9:11because the multitudes knew he was a prophet.
- 9:15And and and there were scores of people coming from Jerusalem to
- 9:18be baptized by John in the Jordan.
- 9:21He he was the most popular person around.
- 9:23Why would you say he was unpopular by the multitudes?
- 9:28That's because Jesus said he was unpopular with the multitudes.
- 9:35Listen to what Jesus says in Luke's Gospel, the 7th chapter,
- 9:39verse 31. To what then shall I compare the
- 9:42men of this generation and what are they like?
- 9:46They're like children who sit in the marketplace and call to one
- 9:49another. And they say, we played the
- 9:51flute for you, and you did not dance.
- 9:54We we sing a dirge and you did not weep for John the Baptist
- 9:59has come eating no bread, drinking no wine, and you say
- 10:06John has a demon. I would say that's unpopular.
- 10:14If someone says you got a demon, you're not a very popular
- 10:16person. And so he was unpopular to the
- 10:19multitudes. You see that they got tired of
- 10:23his message. Yes, they were coming down in
- 10:25scores. The novelty of John would soon
- 10:28wear off. You know, they were coming down
- 10:31to the Jordan. They were being baptized and,
- 10:33and, and everybody got on the, the, the JB wagon and we're
- 10:37going down to be baptized there in the Jordan River.
- 10:40But, but soon they, they got tired of the, of the sin and,
- 10:44and the preaching that gets sin and repentance and, and, and
- 10:48judgement of God. They got tired of that, that,
- 10:52that, that war on them, that they wanted to hear the, the
- 10:56nice cushy, cozy sermons. They wanted to hear those things
- 11:00that made them feel good on the inside.
- 11:02And John didn't make anybody feel good on the inside.
- 11:05And they got tired of that so much so they, they would say he,
- 11:09he has a demon. Oh, his message was serious.
- 11:13His message was severe. His message was intense because
- 11:17he wanted people to know time was short.
- 11:19The Kingdom of Heaven was at hand, so he was unpopular with
- 11:24the multitudes. Fitting in was not a part of
- 11:29John's modus operandi. He didn't care if you liked him
- 11:32or didn't like him. He wasn't out to make friends.
- 11:36He was out just to do. A gut called him to do.
- 11:40He wasn't out to, to, to, to socialite with all the, all the
- 11:46people of society. No, he was just there to do one
- 11:49thing and one thing only be a forerunner to the Messiah, to
- 11:52make sure people understood the way to the Kingdom of heaven.
- 11:59And then there were seven. We told you last week he was he
- 12:02was unforgettable as a man, completely unforgettable.
- 12:09Why? Because he's in the he's in the
- 12:10pages of the eternal word of God always to be commended.
- 12:15And Solomon tells us that that blessed, blessed are the
- 12:20righteous for they should be remembered forever.
- 12:23And that was John. He was an unforgettable kind of
- 12:26man. But note this, even though he
- 12:30was uncompromising in his message like Oliver should be,
- 12:36even though he was unorthodox in his mannerisms, even though that
- 12:41wasn't necessarily his his his push in ministry, he wanted to
- 12:46live a life contrary to everyone else in the world around him.
- 12:51And even though he was unequalled as a man, and even
- 12:56though he was unrivaled as a man, even though he was
- 12:59unlimited in his mission, even though he was uninhibited in his
- 13:03ministry, even though he was unpopular with the multitudes,
- 13:09he was a man that was completely unforgettable.
- 13:13There was one thing in his life that I think you need to know
- 13:18and that he was unimaginable for one brief moment.
- 13:30Unimaginable. And I say that because it's hard
- 13:34to imagine a man with these qualities would begin to be
- 13:42disillusioned. Turn me in your Bible to Luke
- 13:46Chapter 7. I know we're in John's Gospel,
- 13:49but we're looking at the man that came from the Lord, John
- 13:56the Baptist. In Luke 7, John's in prison.
- 14:02John's in prison at a place called Macarius, which is 7
- 14:06miles north and east of the Dead Sea.
- 14:12There are two dungeons at this summer palace of Herod's.
- 14:18They are deep, they're dark, they're damp, they're
- 14:23depressing, they're debilitating, they are
- 14:27discouraging. And John finds himself sitting
- 14:32in this location. But that's not the dungeon that
- 14:38weighs heavily upon him, because he's in a different kind of
- 14:43dungeon, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.
- 14:50He's in the dungeon of disillusionment.
- 14:55Listen to what it says. Luke 7 verse #18 The disciples
- 15:01of John reported to him about all these things.
- 15:04What things? Well, the things that were just
- 15:06happening. He just raised the widow's son
- 15:09at name and Christ was doing all kinds of miracles.
- 15:13The the Bible never tells us that John ever heard Jesus
- 15:18preach A sermon. Bible never tells us that John
- 15:22ever saw Jesus do a miracle. He was the forerunner of the
- 15:26Messiah. He paved the way.
- 15:28We're 18 months into his ministry.
- 15:31He's now in prison. And so John's disciples come to
- 15:35him and say, look, I'm going to report to you the things that
- 15:37Jesus is doing. So John is caught at the speed
- 15:41as to this Messiah who's doing all these miraculous deeds.
- 15:49Then it says, summoning 2 of his disciples, John sent them to the
- 15:55Lord, saying, are you the expected one, or do we look for
- 16:01someone else? When the men came to him, they
- 16:04said, John the Baptist sent us to you to ask, are you the
- 16:10expected one or do we look for someone else?
- 16:17Now just stop right there for a second and think about that.
- 16:21John's the forerunner to the expected one.
- 16:25The expected one. The Eric O Mai is a is a title
- 16:27for the Messiah taken from Psalm 1/18/26.
- 16:30Psalm 40, verse #7 He is the coming one.
- 16:34In fact, when he goes into Jerusalem on that palm Monday,
- 16:36not Sunday, on that palm Monday, they quote Psalm 11826 saying
- 16:41blessed is the coming one who comes in the name of the Lord.
- 16:45So he is the expected one. That's the title for the
- 16:47Messiah. That's why there was this great
- 16:49anticipation around the arrival of the Messiah.
- 16:53But here's John. We, we would expect the crowd to
- 16:56ask this question, but not the forerunner to the Messiah to ask
- 17:00this question. And John comes and says to his
- 17:03disciples, go and ask Jesus, are you the Messiah?
- 17:10Are you the expected one? See, this is unimaginable that
- 17:15this man who would preach as he preached, lived as he lived,
- 17:20knew that he was a forewind of the Messiah.
- 17:23His Father had given him all the information that he needed.
- 17:27He knew who he was and what he was about.
- 17:30All of a sudden he is completely disillusioned as to what's
- 17:36happening in his life. Completely.
- 17:39So much so he begins to doubt that Jesus is who he said he
- 17:45was. And yet John was a forerunner to
- 17:51the Messiah. This is a very important passage
- 17:55of Scripture because you see, every one of us in the room at
- 18:00some time or another finds ourself in the same kind of
- 18:08dungeon, the dungeon of disillusionment, where we are
- 18:14taken back. We begin to question all that
- 18:20God is doing and why he's doing it now.
- 18:25This is the greatest man born of a woman, and he is disillusioned
- 18:31as to the activity of the Messiah.
- 18:36And so he begins to ask this question.
- 18:40It's perplexing to us, but it's encouraging to us because when
- 18:46we ask the question, Lord, what are you doing?
- 18:51Why are things happening the way they are?
- 18:54We find ourselves in this dungeon of disillusionment.
- 18:59John does the right thing. John goes to the Lord.
- 19:05He goes to, he goes to the source, he goes to the Christ
- 19:12and he asks them, are you the expected 1?
- 19:16He sends his men there. How?
- 19:19How did John get here? How did not?
- 19:23How did he physically get in the dungeon?
- 19:24We know how he got there. We know he's going to die soon,
- 19:28but how did he get here mentally?
- 19:30How did he get here spiritually, emotionally?
- 19:32How did he come to this place where he's doubting the fact
- 19:35that Jesus is the Messiah and he is the preordained forerunner to
- 19:44the Messiah? How does he get here?
- 19:50Four ways. One was simply because of
- 19:56personal affliction, personal affliction.
- 20:02When personal affliction arises in our lives, personal
- 20:05persecution arises in our lives. We can come to a place of
- 20:09complete and total disillusionment.
- 20:14John was a faithful preacher. John was a consecrated man.
- 20:22He was a courageous man. He knew about his mission in
- 20:27life. He knew about his calling in
- 20:28life. He fulfilled that calling.
- 20:31He didn't back away from it. He was very, very faithful.
- 20:35It wasn't like John was living in sin.
- 20:39Like John had had a, had a young girl in every little village
- 20:42that he went to and he he spent the night with her.
- 20:44No, it, it was not that way. John wasn't living a sin.
- 20:48It wasn't that he was sinless, but he wasn't living in known
- 20:50sin. He wasn't rebelling against the
- 20:53Messiah. He wasn't backing away from his
- 20:55call, so he'd be thrown into prison.
- 20:58No, he was faithful. He was true to the Lord.
- 21:02He was committed to his God, and now he's in prison.
- 21:07So is this what happens when when the Bible says he wants me
- 21:11for Samuel 2:30, I will honor? Is this the honor John gets?
- 21:15He's honoring the Lord with his life and now he's thrown into
- 21:18prison. Who does that?
- 21:22Why would God do that? It's it's like the person who
- 21:26says, you know, I'm committed to serving the Lord.
- 21:28I want to honor the Lord and, and live for the Lord and raise
- 21:31the godly family. And then and then all of a
- 21:33sudden one of my children dies said, well, wait, wait a minute.
- 21:37I'm not living in sin. I'm not rebelling against the
- 21:40Lord and and yet the Lord takes, takes my child.
- 21:45I don't understand or, or you're, you're, you're, you're
- 21:50living the life you're, you're obedient to the Lord, you're
- 21:52serving in the church and you're, you're glorifying his
- 21:54name. You're you're preaching the
- 21:55gospel to everybody you know, and you go to the doctor and
- 21:58says, you got an inoperable cancer.
- 21:59You got three weeks to live and then you're going to die.
- 22:03You're like, whoa, time out. I've been faithful to the Lord.
- 22:07I've been true to his word. I've been committed to Christ.
- 22:11And this is what I get death three weeks from now.
- 22:15This is what I get my child being killed in an accident.
- 22:20Or you're married for 4050, sixty years and God has brought
- 22:25you through your life together with your your your wife and and
- 22:28your husband. And all of a sudden your spouse
- 22:29dies. You're left all alone and you
- 22:33don't know what to do. You see.
- 22:35Wait, wait a minute. Lord, our marriage honored you.
- 22:37We are faithful for all these years.
- 22:39We are true to you. We served you together.
- 22:42We lived in in harmony together. We raised the godly family and
- 22:46and now you, you take my my husband from me and I'm all
- 22:49alone. You become disillusioned.
- 22:54This is the plan and purposes of God in your life happens.
- 23:01Here's John, he's going through a personal affliction.
- 23:05He's thrown into prison not, not because of any sins that he's
- 23:09committed, not because of his rebellion or disobedience to
- 23:12God, simply because he's been faithful to the Lord, true to
- 23:15his God, honoring his God. Now he's in prison.
- 23:21His responses, Well, maybe, maybe he's not the expected one.
- 23:27I mean, didn't he come to release the the captives set the
- 23:31set the prisoner free and here I am in prison.
- 23:35Well, what's the deal with that? How come things are the way they
- 23:39are? Why is it I'm a I'm about to die
- 23:44and I've been called to be the forerunner of the Messiah.
- 23:47I was, I was willing to step aside.
- 23:49I was willing to say he must increase.
- 23:51I must decrease. I was willing to do all that,
- 23:54Lord. And this is what I get Death.
- 23:56Is this a result of a faithful, courageous, true, committed
- 24:02ministry? You know, sometimes we go into
- 24:07those places in our lives and realize, realize that a lot of
- 24:11that's out of out of ignorance and unfortunately selfishness
- 24:18because somehow we, we, we think that there are certain things we
- 24:22do not deserve. And if we get them, what's wrong
- 24:28with God? That's why I would get it.
- 24:31I don't deserve this. And we would say John didn't
- 24:35deserve that. But you know, God has a plan and
- 24:40a purpose for everything. He's in charge.
- 24:44Which leads us to the to the next, the next element.
- 24:46Not not just personal affliction, but how about this
- 24:50popular misconception? John had a popular misconception
- 25:00about the Messiah. He had bought into the populist
- 25:04view of the Messiah. Even though the Bible taught
- 25:08that the Messiah would come and die, Old Testament teaches this,
- 25:13that he would rise again. Even though the Old Testament
- 25:17taught this, there was this misconception about the Messiah
- 25:22that was taught by the religious establishment that the Messiah
- 25:25would come as a as a military conquering hero.
- 25:28He would overthrow Rome, he would set up his Kingdom, he
- 25:31would rule from the throne of David in Jerusalem, and we'd all
- 25:35be at peace together and he would destroy the enemies.
- 25:41That was a popular misconception.
- 25:45And believe it or not, John to some degree bought into that.
- 25:51I mean, after all, Peter bought into that, right?
- 25:54Remember in Matthew 16 when, when Christ said to them that he
- 25:58was going to suffer and die? And Peter says, Oh no, no, Lord,
- 26:01no, no, you're, you're the Messiah, you're not going to
- 26:04die. And Christ said to him, get thee
- 26:06behind me, Satan. Why?
- 26:08Because Peter had bought into the popular misconception about
- 26:12the Messiah, his coming and how he would operate when he arrived
- 26:16and what he would do when he got there.
- 26:19He'd been sold the bill of goods.
- 26:22Habakkuk was the same way, was he not?
- 26:26Habakkuk's praying for, for revival in the, in the nation,
- 26:30praying that that God would raise them up and strengthen
- 26:33them. And, and so he's praying and God
- 26:35says, I'm not going to do that, Habakkuk.
- 26:38Habakkuk says, what do you mean you're not going to do that?
- 26:41No, no, I'm going to do something different.
- 26:43In fact, I'm going to send the the most wicked people I know
- 26:46that are going to take them into captivity and they are going to
- 26:50learn so much in that captivity and the back says why?
- 26:53Why are you going to do that? Why?
- 26:56He's completely disillusioned until God begins to explain his
- 27:01providential plan to backup to Finally he capitulates to the
- 27:07plan of God and realizes that God knows exactly what he's
- 27:09doing. But it's easy to buy into a miss
- 27:17the conception of the Messiah, His plans and purposes for our
- 27:21lives. Abraham did right.
- 27:27God says he's going to have a son.
- 27:30Well, years went by, still didn't have a son.
- 27:36So he and Sarah got together and conjured up a plan to have a son
- 27:42to Hagar the handmaid, because they had a, a, a, a
- 27:46misconception as to how God was going to orchestrate his plan in
- 27:50their lives. Getting that same thing hit all
- 27:56these men. And God wills him down to 300.
- 27:58And he's like, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, 300 men.
- 28:00We can't, we can't go against the enemy of 300 men.
- 28:05Completely disillusioned as to what God is doing.
- 28:10Zacharias, the father of John the Baptist, the Angel Gabriel
- 28:16comes to him. This is your wife.
- 28:18Elizabeth's going to have a son. He's like, whoa, she's 80 years
- 28:22old, 80 year old women don't have kids.
- 28:27And God made him deaf and dumb for for nine months so he could
- 28:32not speak or hear. Why?
- 28:36Because he was disillusioned as to the plan of God in his life,
- 28:40even though he was told his wife would conceive the forerunner of
- 28:43the Messiah. See, we get there because there
- 28:47there is this, this conception that we have with the Messiah
- 28:50that unfortunately has been sold to us by TV preachers and books
- 28:53that have been that have been printed today.
- 28:56We we've been told, hey, yeah, you give your life to Christ,
- 28:58man, your marriage is going to be great, man, just give your
- 29:00life to Jesus and, and marriage will be great.
- 29:05I give my life to Jesus and my marriage is in shambles or give
- 29:08your life to Jesus and your children will be obedient to to
- 29:11you because now you love the Lord and and they're going to
- 29:14follow the Lord and they're going to serve the Lord.
- 29:16And I give my life to Christ and my wife gives the life to Christ
- 29:18and my children rebel like nothing else.
- 29:24Give your life to Christ. Got to give you a great job,
- 29:27best job, more money. What give my life to Christ.
- 29:31I lose my job, I lose my money. Well, why is that completely
- 29:36dissolution? Because there's this popular
- 29:38misconception that if you if you come to Jesus and you give your
- 29:41life to him, everything is going to be a bit of roses.
- 29:44You're going to be walked into the primrose path of success and
- 29:48everything will be fine. That's you didn't read that in
- 29:50this book. This is only a book that
- 29:53matters. Jesus said if you give life to
- 29:56me, I'm going to I'm going to divide your family.
- 29:58I'm going to separate the father from the mother.
- 30:01I'm going to separate the husband from the wife.
- 30:03I'm going to separate the daughter from from the father.
- 30:05I tend to bring a sword, not peace.
- 30:09If they hate me, they're going to hate you.
- 30:11If they persecuted me, they're going to persecute you, right?
- 30:16It's been granted to you. Not just to believe on his name,
- 30:19but to suffer for his sake. Philippians tells us, See, we've
- 30:24been sold the bill of goods. We have this popular
- 30:27misconception of the Messiah and what he does and how he works
- 30:33that when it doesn't meet the standard that I think it should,
- 30:36I completely disillusioned as to his working.
- 30:40This is John the Baptist, it's where he is.
- 30:42It's like, I don't understand. I don't get it.
- 30:47So go ask Jesus if he's the expected one because I'm
- 30:53expecting things a little bit differently than what I'm
- 30:55getting right by now. And so just just go ask him,
- 30:59right? And then another one is, is
- 31:01partial revelation because we don't have the full revelation
- 31:05of of all that God is doing. Here's John.
- 31:07He only has the Old Testament. Although the Old Testament
- 31:09taught about the coming, the Messiah, the death of the
- 31:11Messiah, the resurrection of the Messiah, that the Messiah was
- 31:14divine, even though it's clearly taught in the Old Testament, not
- 31:17all that was, was, was connected together in his mind.
- 31:23See all the pieces of the puzzle.
- 31:25We're not fitting together perfectly for John.
- 31:29So he's disillusioned and that's because he only had partial
- 31:34revelation didn't have all of the truth didn't have didn't
- 31:38know anything about the second coming.
- 31:39I mean, there's two comings. What do you mean the second
- 31:41coming didn't know anything about the church age knew
- 31:44nothing about the the mystery of the church, nothing about the
- 31:47mystery of the lawless one. Second Thessalonians said the
- 31:49two knew nothing of the mystery of 1 body Ephesians, yet the two
- 31:52knew nothing of the of the mysteries of of Christ in you
- 31:55the hope of glory didn't know any of that because they had
- 32:00partial revelation. We can become very disillusioned
- 32:04when we only know parts of the Bible and not all of the Bible
- 32:10like we should. We know bits and pieces here and
- 32:13there and we glop on to those verses, but there are so much
- 32:17more in the Scripture that explain to us our God.
- 32:21That's why that's why theology is the greatest study, the study
- 32:24of God. You need to know your God,
- 32:27right? What did Daniel say?
- 32:29Those who know their God will do great exploits and take great
- 32:37courage. But if you don't know your God,
- 32:40you can't. You got to know him.
- 32:44And so we, we come to to life and we have a little bit of the
- 32:48Bible here and a little bit of the Bible there.
- 32:50And then all of a sudden things begin to go haywire and we're
- 32:52like, whoa, what's going on here?
- 32:55And not knowing that that God is sovereign and God is all
- 32:58authoritative and that God, God's Providence is at work and
- 33:02that God is orchestrating every event in life to bring about his
- 33:04great glory. And the reason God answers
- 33:06prayer is not to meet my needs, but that the Father will be
- 33:09glorified in heaven. John 1413 But I'm, I'm going to
- 33:12prayer thinking he's going to meet my needs and, and my needs
- 33:14aren't being met. And I'm praying fervently.
- 33:17And it says the affectionate, fervent prayer of a righteous
- 33:18man, the faith of much and nothing's happening in my life.
- 33:21That's because God answers prayer not for your sake, but
- 33:24for God's sake that he might be glorified.
- 33:30That's because we only have partial revelation.
- 33:33That's why you need to be in the book.
- 33:34You need to be in the Word, studying the Word, learning the
- 33:37Word, growing in the Word all the time #4 that's this.
- 33:47A perceived expectation. A perceived expectation.
- 33:56Whenever you expect the expected one to meet your expectations,
- 34:05you will always be in the Dungeon of Disillusionment.
- 34:10Whenever you expect the expected one to meet your expectations,
- 34:16you will always find yourself in the Dungeon of Disillusionment.
- 34:22That's John. John had expectations.
- 34:27He's coming with an axe, with a widow and fork in his hand.
- 34:32I baptize you with water. He's going to baptize you with
- 34:34fire. And he's healing everybody.
- 34:39He's letting the blind see. He's raising the dead.
- 34:43He's curing everybody. Where's the fire?
- 34:47Where's the axe? Where's the judgement?
- 34:49Where's the throne? Where's the military prowess of
- 34:52the Messiah? Where is all that?
- 34:56And Jesus is just showing the kindness of his mercy, His love
- 35:00to those all around him, eating with tax gatherers and sinners,
- 35:05presenting the Kingdom of heaven to them.
- 35:10So many times we have expectations, do we not?
- 35:14We expect God to do this or do that and he doesn't like, why?
- 35:18Why wouldn't you do that, Lord? Why won't you answer this or why
- 35:23won't you do this for me? You know, you know, I, I, I, I,
- 35:29I grew up at home and I, I expect to get married.
- 35:32But now I'm 35 and I'm not married.
- 35:36Those are my expectations. I I grew up and I grew up at
- 35:40home and I get married and I expect to have children, but I'm
- 35:43barren and I have no children. And I find myself in the dungeon
- 35:48of of disillusionment wondering, God, what are you doing?
- 35:53How come? How come my expectations are not
- 35:57being met? Here's John the Baptist asking
- 36:05his disciples to go and say to Jesus, are we supposed to be
- 36:09looking for somebody else or are you the guy?
- 36:14Because if you're not the guy and we need to know now, but if
- 36:17you are the guy, why is it that our expectations are not being
- 36:23met? So look at the next verse.
- 36:27If you're still in Luke 7, verse 21.
- 36:31That very time he cured many people of diseases and
- 36:34afflictions and evil spirits, and he gave sight to many who
- 36:37were blind in one motion, in one word, in one wave of the hand.
- 36:43However he did it, everybody that was there instantaneously
- 36:48totally healed from any disease they had.
- 36:52They were blind. They could see, they couldn't
- 36:54walk. They could walk if they had a
- 36:56demon, demon, demon in them. That demon was cast out.
- 37:00Just a one moment, one brief moment, boom, everything's gone,
- 37:05every sealed. And he says this.
- 37:08He says go and report to John what you have seen and heard.
- 37:13The blind receive sight, the lame walk, the lepers are
- 37:15cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor
- 37:18have the gospel preached to them.
- 37:19You go tell John that everything I said in Isaiah 35, everything
- 37:24I said in Isaiah 42, everything I said in Isaiah 26, everything
- 37:27I said in Isaiah 61 just happened before your eyes.
- 37:31Because all this is a preview to the coming Kingdom of God.
- 37:36And I'm showing you how it all happens instantaneously.
- 37:39In a moment. You go back, you tell John that,
- 37:44and then as you go back, you tell him that.
- 37:45Tell him this too. He says this verse 23.
- 37:49Blessed is he who does not take offence at me, or blessed is he
- 37:59who does not stumble over me. Or better translation, blessed
- 38:06is the one who doesn't quarrel with me about the way I do my
- 38:14business. That's the blessed person.
- 38:19Stop questioning me. You want to be blessed?
- 38:23Stop questioning the way I do my business, the way I operate.
- 38:28I'm in charge. I got a plan.
- 38:30It moves perfectly. It moves exactly as it designed
- 38:35it to function. So just trust me.
- 38:39Wait upon me. Tell John to trust and wait upon
- 38:42me. Tell John to just just wait.
- 38:47The plan is an operation exactly as it designed it.
- 38:54And blessed are all those who do not take offense at the way I do
- 38:58my business. This is this.
- 39:05When the message of John had left, he began to speak to the
- 39:07crowds about John. What did you see, or what did
- 39:12you go out into the wilderness to see?
- 39:14A Reed shaken by the wind. But what did you go out to see?
- 39:18A man dressed in soft clothing. Those who are splendidly clothed
- 39:23and live in luxury are found in royal palaces.
- 39:29But what did you go out to see? A prophet.
- 39:32Yes, I say to you, and one who was more than a prophet.
- 39:36This is the one about whom it is written.
- 39:39Behold, I send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare
- 39:43your way before you. I say to you, among those born
- 39:45of women, there is no one greater than John.
- 39:49It's in this context when John's in the dungeon of
- 39:53disillusionment, when John had that unimaginable moment in his
- 39:59life when he began to question the way God did his business.
- 40:04Is it that moment that Jesus says that this is the one, the
- 40:09greatest man born of a woman, John the Baptist?
- 40:18Jesus didn't condemn him. Jesus didn't RIP on him.
- 40:23Saying what a what a lousy prophet this guy is.
- 40:27He doesn't even believe in who I am.
- 40:30Who chose him to be the forerunner?
- 40:32What was my father thinking? I don't know.
- 40:35Oh, Jesus responds. This is what you go out to see?
- 40:42Reach shaking the wind Guy dressed the soft clothing.
- 40:46You kidding? Camel's hair?
- 40:49Smelly body, no brush, teeth, hair all dishevelled, eaten
- 40:55locusts and wild honey. What do you think you went out
- 40:58to see? I'm going to tell you this guy.
- 41:02This guy is the one who prepared away in the wilderness.
- 41:06Here's the guy. And this man is the greatest man
- 41:11born of a woman. But the next phrase says this.
- 41:19Yet he was least in the Kingdom of God is greater than the
- 41:27greatest man born of a woman. John the Baptist.
- 41:32Whoa, what? How can that be the least in the
- 41:38Kingdom any of us? The least in the Kingdom of God
- 41:45is greater than the greatest man ever born of a woman.
- 41:51Not not greater in character, not greater in influence, the
- 41:58greater in terms of a revelation because of what we know, because
- 42:06of what we have, we got the the entire New Testament.
- 42:10We know all about the rapture of the church.
- 42:11John didn't we preach Christ crucified.
- 42:15John never did that. We preach the fullness of the
- 42:19Gospel itself, that Jesus came and and and lived and died and
- 42:24rose again and it's coming back again.
- 42:26John couldn't preach that. He didn't know about that.
- 42:31John knew nothing about how God wouldn't dwell you.
- 42:37He knew about God with us, God above us, God among us, but he
- 42:45never heard about God in us. That's a mystery reveal in the
- 42:50New Testament. We preach Christ in you, the
- 42:55hope of glory. And Jesus says, let me know this
- 43:01guy is the greatest man born of a woman yet.
- 43:03Yet those in my Kingdom, the least in my Kingdom, the very
- 43:07least in my Kingdom, is going to be greater than John because of
- 43:11the revelation you will receive about who I am.
- 43:17Wow, what a great passage of scripture.
- 43:22For I know that everyone of you, including myself, have all
- 43:28experienced the dungeon of disillusionment and ask
- 43:32ourselves, what are you doing, Lord?
- 43:36Why are you operating this way? And and God is patient.
- 43:43He is so kind, He is so loving, doesn't rag on us or RIP on us,
- 43:50beat us over the head. He's very kind and gentle, just
- 43:55leads us to a greater understanding and knowledge of
- 43:57Himself that we might fully come to grips with the plan and
- 44:02purposes and Providence of the living God.
- 44:07And so they would go back and they would tell John what took
- 44:11place and John would die. He'd lose his head.
- 44:16But you know what, I bet you, when John died, he couldn't
- 44:23wait. He couldn't wait to be in glory.
- 44:27And that's where he is today, in the presence of Almighty God.
- 44:34And so we come today to realize that that there is a man sent
- 44:39from God. What kind of man?
- 44:41Well, we described him a little bit for you.
- 44:43And next week we'll move on to the next phrase.
- 44:48There was a man who was sent from God.
- 44:53As we make our way slowly through the Gospel of John,
- 44:55let's pray together. Father, we thank you for today.
- 44:59We thank you for what you've done and our doing.
- 45:03We are a blessed people. You've given us the knowledge of
- 45:08the Scriptures. You've given us your word that
- 45:11will allow us to understand the blessedness and the beauty of
- 45:16your character and your plans. We thank you for that.
- 45:23For everyone in the room today, Lord, I pray that you do a
- 45:25mighty work in their heart and life.
- 45:26Draw them closer to your presence until you come again,
- 45:30as you most surely will, in Jesus name, Amen.
