- 0:02Speaker 1: Life Audio. Hey, they're faith listeners. Welcome to the Bible
- 0:05Speaker 1: Explained Podcast. I'm not gonna chit chat very much this
- 0:15Speaker 1: morning because we're going to be in Titus chapter two,
- 0:18Speaker 1: and there is a lot of content in this short
- 0:20Speaker 1: little passage. So before I begin the episode, here's a
- 0:22Speaker 1: word from a sponsor, and then we'll jump right in.
- 0:26Speaker 1: All right, guys, well that sponsored dad was playing. Hopefully
- 0:28Speaker 1: you got the chance to grab your bibles and your
- 0:30Speaker 1: cups of coffee or our tea. Let's go ahead and
- 0:32Speaker 1: read Titus chapter two one through five this morning, And
- 0:36Speaker 1: as you all know, I'll be reading from the web,
- 0:40Speaker 1: but say the things which fit sound doctrine, that older
- 0:43Speaker 1: men should be temperate, sensible, sober minded, sound in faith,
- 0:47Speaker 1: in love, and in perseverance. And that the older women
- 0:50Speaker 1: likewise be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or enslaved too
- 0:54Speaker 1: much wine, teachers of that which is good. That they
- 0:57Speaker 1: may train the young wives to love their husbands, to
- 1:00Speaker 1: love their children, to be sober minded, chaste workers at home,
- 1:04Speaker 1: kind being in subjection to their own husbands. That God's
- 1:07Speaker 1: word may not be blasphemed. Hopefully you guys remember what
- 1:12Speaker 1: we talked about on Tuesday, but essentially in Titus chapter one,
- 1:15Speaker 1: Paul was talking about a whole lot of people that
- 1:17Speaker 1: were causing a bunch of destruction in the church with
- 1:21Speaker 1: their terrible doctrines, specifically the Judaizers who would go into
- 1:25Speaker 1: the church and tell people, hey, you're not saved if
- 1:28Speaker 1: you don't do all of the man made rules that
- 1:31Speaker 1: we made up, such as getting a circumcision, such as
- 1:35Speaker 1: not eating certain foods, such as doing this or doing that.
- 1:38Speaker 1: And Paul is like, these are destructive doctrines that destroy households,
- 1:44Speaker 1: upheave the faith of people, and diminish the grace of Jesus.
- 1:49Speaker 1: So these doctrines needed to be avoided, and not just avoided,
- 1:52Speaker 1: but they needed to be shut down, is what Paul said,
- 1:55Speaker 1: not through violence or anything like that, but through sound doctrine,
- 2:00Speaker 1: which is exactly what he says to Titus right here
- 2:02Speaker 1: in our first verse for today, he says, but say
- 2:05Speaker 1: the things which fit sound doctrine, not the garbage doctrine
- 2:09Speaker 1: going around the church. But say things that fit the
- 2:12Speaker 1: sound doctrine, specifically in verse two, that older men should
- 2:17Speaker 1: be temperate, sensible, sober minded, sound in faith, in love,
- 2:22Speaker 1: and in perseverance. So This makes it clear that sound
- 2:25Speaker 1: doctrine is not just what you say, but it's also
- 2:29Speaker 1: what you do. Because notice here that he tells Titus
- 2:33Speaker 1: to say sound doctrine, but then he also gives a
- 2:35Speaker 1: bunch of examples of how to live sound doctrine as well.
- 2:39Speaker 1: So this is really important for every single Christian to know.
- 2:43Speaker 1: It's not just about what comes out of your mouth.
- 2:46Speaker 1: People are also watching the way you live. How are
- 2:50Speaker 1: people viewing us? Are we actually living a lifestyle of Christianity.
- 2:54Speaker 1: We're not doing it so that other people can look
- 2:56Speaker 1: at us and see how holy we are. That's not
- 2:59Speaker 1: the point of it at all, you know. That's what
- 3:01Speaker 1: the Pharisees got into, where they're you know, praying out
- 3:03Speaker 1: in the street corners and fasting to make themselves look
- 3:06Speaker 1: really sick and just doing all sorts of crazy things
- 3:10Speaker 1: to get attention from the crowds so that they could
- 3:13Speaker 1: feel more holy to the masses. That's not what the
- 3:17Speaker 1: Christian life is about either. The reason we live good
- 3:20Speaker 1: lives is not for glory for ourselves, but for glory
- 3:24Speaker 1: for Jesus. It's all about Jesus. We are supposed to
- 3:28Speaker 1: shine our lights. We are supposed to show people that
- 3:31Speaker 1: Christianity is good, that the Gospel is good, and that
- 3:36Speaker 1: our lives have been changed because of the Gospel. That
- 3:39Speaker 1: we are truly following the principles of Jesus. That's why
- 3:43Speaker 1: we live. The Christian lifestyle is to give glory to Jesus.
- 3:46Speaker 1: It is all about that mission. So the older men
- 3:50Speaker 1: need to be taught to be temperate, sensible, and sober minded.
- 3:57Speaker 1: This means not violent, not angry, not overly judgmental. They
- 4:03Speaker 1: need to be fair, they need to be kind and gentle,
- 4:08Speaker 1: and they also need to be sober minded. As we
- 4:10Speaker 1: know with what we've studied of the Creeds so far,
- 4:13Speaker 1: the last chapter called them lazy gluttons, and Paul was like, yeah,
- 4:18Speaker 1: that's actually true. So if the Creeds had that type
- 4:22Speaker 1: of reputation of being lazy gluttons, that probably included a
- 4:25Speaker 1: lot of substance abuse as well. That's why Titus had
- 4:28Speaker 1: to teach these men to be sober minded. So in
- 4:32Speaker 1: other words, clear headed, not addicted to anything that's going
- 4:36Speaker 1: to cause them to not think clearly. But they also
- 4:39Speaker 1: have to be sound in faith, in love, and in perseverance.
- 4:45Speaker 1: Other versions might say the word patience in place of
- 4:48Speaker 1: perseverance or endurance in place of perseverance. So what does
- 4:53Speaker 1: that mean to be sound in faith, in love, and
- 4:56Speaker 1: in perseverance. Will that word sound in sound of faith
- 5:00Speaker 1: is applied to the word doctrine, So that means that
- 5:04Speaker 1: they have to have a healthy Christian lifestyle in all
- 5:09Speaker 1: of these things. A healthy Christian lifestyle in the matter
- 5:12Speaker 1: of faith, in the matter of love, and in the
- 5:14Speaker 1: matter of patience, perseverance, or endurance. So they have to
- 5:19Speaker 1: have a strong faith. They have to have true love
- 5:22Speaker 1: for God and for other people, which is the first
- 5:25Speaker 1: and second greatest commandments. And they also have to have
- 5:28Speaker 1: the ability to persevere, whether that means being patient with
- 5:33Speaker 1: other people or even being patient during times of trial,
- 5:37Speaker 1: testing or persecution. These men have to be taught these things.
- 5:42Speaker 1: That's why Titus is at this church, because the Cretans
- 5:46Speaker 1: were known for not doing these things. They were known
- 5:48Speaker 1: for the opposite of all of these things. So Titus
- 5:51Speaker 1: has to teach them what they should do, how to
- 5:54Speaker 1: live the Christian lifestyle the way God wants them to live.
- 5:58Speaker 1: And this is how God wants us to live. He
- 6:01Speaker 1: wants us to be sober minded, he wants us to
- 6:03Speaker 1: be sound in faith, love, and in perseverance, and to
- 6:06Speaker 1: teach other people these things as well. But notice in
- 6:09Speaker 1: this passage that Paul mentions the older men first before
- 6:12Speaker 1: he mentions the older women, not because women are inferior
- 6:17Speaker 1: to men in any way. In fact, Paul himself preached
- 6:20Speaker 1: that the men and the women are both equal in
- 6:24Speaker 1: the eyes of God. But there's two reasons why Paul
- 6:26Speaker 1: mentions the men first. The first reason is because Titus
- 6:30Speaker 1: himself was a man, and Titus should be focusing his
- 6:33Speaker 1: ministry on the men, not on the women, because it
- 6:36Speaker 1: is inappropriate for men to counsel and teach women without
- 6:42Speaker 1: another man being present. And we'll get more into that
- 6:45Speaker 1: in just a second. The second reason was that Titus's
- 6:48Speaker 1: entire purpose for being in Crete was to find elders
- 6:52Speaker 1: and pastors of these churches, because apparently these churches in
- 6:56Speaker 1: Crete were really really lacking in good eldership, and the
- 7:00Speaker 1: elders and the pastors, as we know, based upon other
- 7:03Speaker 1: scriptures in the Bible, we're supposed to be men, not women,
- 7:08Speaker 1: because the Bible follows a complementarian viewpoint. The complimentarian idea
- 7:14Speaker 1: is that men and women are equal, but their roles
- 7:18Speaker 1: are different. The egalitarian viewpoint is that men and women
- 7:23Speaker 1: are equal and their roles are also equal, so men
- 7:27Speaker 1: can do anything women can do, and women can do
- 7:30Speaker 1: anything men can do. But as we've seen from other
- 7:33Speaker 1: passages of Scripture, specifically in the books of First and
- 7:37Speaker 1: Second Corinthians, we find out that women are not supposed
- 7:40Speaker 1: to be pastors of the church. And I've talked about
- 7:42Speaker 1: that at length, and I will try to find an
- 7:45Speaker 1: episode to link in the description if you're curious more
- 7:48Speaker 1: about that topic why women should not be pastors, so
- 7:51Speaker 1: that will be linked. But let me just tell you
- 7:53Speaker 1: something based upon my own personal experience. Ladies, you don't
- 7:58Speaker 1: want to be a pastor. You might think you want
- 8:01Speaker 1: to be a pastor. You don't want to be a pastor.
- 8:03Speaker 1: And if you do want to be a pastor, you
- 8:04Speaker 1: don't understand what goes into being a pastor. It is
- 8:07Speaker 1: an irritating and annoying and difficult and conflict filled job.
- 8:13Speaker 1: You don't get rest. You have to be at that
- 8:16Speaker 1: church twenty four to seven. You have to listen to
- 8:18Speaker 1: the complaints of every single person that comes through your doors.
- 8:22Speaker 1: You have to deal with people backbiting you, your husband,
- 8:25Speaker 1: your kids, You have to deal with friends who you
- 8:29Speaker 1: thought were friends just up and leaving the church. If
- 8:33Speaker 1: the pastoral position is done correctly, it is probably one
- 8:37Speaker 1: of the most mentally and emotionally exhausting jobs on the planet.
- 8:42Speaker 1: And I honestly am not being dramatic when I say that,
- 8:45Speaker 1: because I've worked very closely with pastors. My brother in
- 8:48Speaker 1: law actually is a pastor, and the things he has
- 8:51Speaker 1: to deal with on a day to day basis would
- 8:55Speaker 1: shatter an average individual. Not to mention my past you know,
- 9:00Speaker 1: when I go to the church, my pastor is always there. Always.
- 9:06Speaker 1: I don't know that I've ever not seen him at
- 9:08Speaker 1: the church, like it's a rare occurrence. He's always there
- 9:12Speaker 1: because there's always something to do at the church. You
- 9:15Speaker 1: have to oversee every single ministry. You have to make
- 9:19Speaker 1: sure everything is being taught correctly, whether it's the children's
- 9:24Speaker 1: programs or the women's ministry thing that's coming up. The
- 9:30Speaker 1: pastor and the elders have to be the gatekeeper of anything,
- 9:34Speaker 1: every single thing that comes into the church. It's a
- 9:37Speaker 1: difficult and tough job that gives you almost no break.
- 9:42Speaker 1: I'm not saying across the board that every single woman
- 9:44Speaker 1: can't handle conflict, but the majority of women that I
- 9:48Speaker 1: do know have a really hard time with conflict. There
- 9:54Speaker 1: might be some aspects of the pastoral role that you
- 9:57Speaker 1: or any other woman would be very good at, but
- 10:00Speaker 1: when it comes to the conflict, when it comes to
- 10:03Speaker 1: bad ideology, like having to shut that down, when it
- 10:06Speaker 1: comes to friends stabbing you in the back, could you
- 10:09Speaker 1: honestly say that you'd be good at handling those things,
- 10:13Speaker 1: and not just handling those things on a one time occasion,
- 10:16Speaker 1: but maybe handling it on a weekly kind of basis,
- 10:21Speaker 1: because that's what pastors do. It's like a battlefield. And
- 10:24Speaker 1: Titus right here was supposed to be the man that
- 10:27Speaker 1: had to shut down all of this garbage philosophy and
- 10:32Speaker 1: all of this fake doctrine that was coming into this
- 10:35Speaker 1: church while possibly having to experience persecution because of it,
- 10:40Speaker 1: and trying to find men that were sober minded and
- 10:45Speaker 1: sound in doctrine. Titus had a huge job set in
- 10:49Speaker 1: front of him, and he had a big job because
- 10:51Speaker 1: he had to find other men who were also suited
- 10:54Speaker 1: for this role because it's not even for every man.
- 10:56Speaker 1: That's another thing. The pastoral role isn't even for every
- 11:00Speaker 1: every single man. I mean, we just talked about the
- 11:02Speaker 1: qualifications of elders in Titus Chapter one, is that every
- 11:06Speaker 1: single man, No, it is a slim minority of men
- 11:11Speaker 1: that actually qualified to be a pastor or an elder.
- 11:15Speaker 1: And that's why Paul right here talks about the men first,
- 11:19Speaker 1: because that was Titus's job, was to find these men
- 11:24Speaker 1: that could actually do this very difficult job, especially back
- 11:28Speaker 1: in these days where persecution, where extreme persecution was ramping
- 11:33Speaker 1: up under the reign of Nero. These were tough times,
- 11:37Speaker 1: not like it is in Western societies today. This was
- 11:40Speaker 1: a very very tough time, so Titus has to worry
- 11:44Speaker 1: about the men first, and then secondly, in verse three,
- 11:47Speaker 1: he says, also the older women likewise be reverent in behavior,
- 11:52Speaker 1: not slanderers or enslaved to much wine, but teachers of
- 11:55Speaker 1: that which is good. So the older women needed to
- 11:59Speaker 1: be trained as well, so this would be modesty. This
- 12:03Speaker 1: would probably include things like not gossiping or slandering other
- 12:07Speaker 1: people or backbiting. And also, like the men, they needed
- 12:10Speaker 1: to be sober minded, not enslaved to much wine. Again,
- 12:16Speaker 1: we've talked about how there's nothing wrong with drinking some
- 12:20Speaker 1: wine or some alcohol, because even Jesus drank wine and alcohol,
- 12:25Speaker 1: but being enslaved to it where you can't function without it.
- 12:28Speaker 1: That is not a good quality for an older woman
- 12:31Speaker 1: of Christ to be emulating to other people. Instead, they
- 12:35Speaker 1: need to be teachers of that which is good. So
- 12:37Speaker 1: that shows right here that the job of the men
- 12:40Speaker 1: is to focus on the younger men, and the job
- 12:43Speaker 1: of the older women is to focus on the younger women,
- 12:46Speaker 1: because if that doesn't happen, things can get really shady
- 12:50Speaker 1: very quickly. As we know, it is not good for
- 12:54Speaker 1: an older man to be alone with a young woman.
- 12:57Speaker 1: There's too many temptations there. There's too many things that
- 13:01Speaker 1: can go wrong, and unfortunately that happens a lot in
- 13:05Speaker 1: our churches today. There's too much temptation. So Paul tells Titus,
- 13:10Speaker 1: don't even focus on the younger women. Instead, focus on
- 13:14Speaker 1: teaching the older men and women how to actually train
- 13:19Speaker 1: up the younger generations. Specifically, the older women need to
- 13:23Speaker 1: train up the younger women. This kind of goes back
- 13:26Speaker 1: to something else that Paul said. I don't remember specifically
- 13:29Speaker 1: where this verse was. I should have looked it up,
- 13:31Speaker 1: but I think it's found in First Corinthians, where it
- 13:35Speaker 1: says that women need to be submissive while they're in
- 13:39Speaker 1: church and silent, and if they have any questions, they
- 13:44Speaker 1: need to learn from their husbands at home. Now, a
- 13:47Speaker 1: lot of women hate that verse because they're like, that
- 13:49Speaker 1: is the most sexist thing I ever heard in my
- 13:52Speaker 1: entire life. That women just have to shut up in
- 13:54Speaker 1: church and they can't say anything and they have to
- 13:56Speaker 1: learn from their husbands. That is just misogynist. But there's
- 14:01Speaker 1: something that people don't understand about that verse. Firstly, in
- 14:05Speaker 1: Greek culture back in these days, the Greeks actually believed
- 14:12Speaker 1: that women could not learn, that their minds were not
- 14:15Speaker 1: actually sharp enough or good enough to learn. The only
- 14:18Speaker 1: purpose of a woman was to be a trophy wife
- 14:21Speaker 1: and to pop out a bunch of babies and take
- 14:23Speaker 1: care of the house. That is honestly what Greek men believed.
- 14:26Speaker 1: You can look that up. When Paul wrote that letter
- 14:29Speaker 1: to a widely gentile and Greek audience and said women
- 14:35Speaker 1: need to learn at home, he was actually sticking up
- 14:38Speaker 1: for women in a way that other men would not
- 14:40Speaker 1: do by saying, no, actually, women are very intelligent and
- 14:45Speaker 1: they have the capacity to learn, and they should learn,
- 14:49Speaker 1: but they should do it in a way that is respectable,
- 14:53Speaker 1: not going to the missionary or the pastor where things
- 14:56Speaker 1: can get really shady. But instead they should go home
- 14:59Speaker 1: to their husbands and have a conversation, actually talk to
- 15:03Speaker 1: the husbands. And that's another thing Paul was putting the
- 15:05Speaker 1: responsibility on the men there. He's saying, men, you need
- 15:08Speaker 1: to talk to your wives. You have to have a
- 15:11Speaker 1: conversation with them and teach them, because of course they
- 15:14Speaker 1: have the capacity to learn, and they should learn. They
- 15:17Speaker 1: should learn about these things. The majority of women back
- 15:20Speaker 1: in these days could not read. They didn't have the
- 15:24Speaker 1: ability to read, so they had to learn from somebody.
- 15:26Speaker 1: So who are they going to learn from? Are they
- 15:28Speaker 1: going to go to Titus and learn something. No, they
- 15:31Speaker 1: shouldn't do that. They should instead go to their husbands,
- 15:34Speaker 1: or if they don't have a husband, go to an
- 15:37Speaker 1: older woman, because that removes any kind of temptation or
- 15:42Speaker 1: problems that could arise in the church from two opposite
- 15:45Speaker 1: genders meeting together on a regular basis. That's why Paul
- 15:50Speaker 1: says the older women must be teachers of that which
- 15:53Speaker 1: is good, that they may train verse four, the young
- 15:57Speaker 1: wives to love their husbands, to love them, their children,
- 16:01Speaker 1: to be sober minded, chaste workers at home kind being
- 16:04Speaker 1: in subjection to their own husbands that God's word may
- 16:07Speaker 1: not be blasphemed. So that show's right there. Even if
- 16:10Speaker 1: these younger women do have husbands, not all of these
- 16:14Speaker 1: husbands are going to do their husbandly duty by teaching
- 16:18Speaker 1: the wives what they need to be taught. Sometimes these
- 16:22Speaker 1: women are going to need extra instruction, and the best
- 16:25Speaker 1: place to get this is from older wiser women, and
- 16:29Speaker 1: these older wiser women are going to train these young women,
- 16:32Speaker 1: it says, to love their husbands. Oh man, you know,
- 16:38Speaker 1: I can remember when my husband and I were first married.
- 16:42Speaker 1: There were things that just graded on me that my
- 16:47Speaker 1: husband would do, and honestly, I was not and still
- 16:49Speaker 1: am not a very patient person. So my husband and
- 16:52Speaker 1: I would get into these huge fights, like really bad
- 16:55Speaker 1: fights sometimes because of our pride. We couldn't let our
- 16:59Speaker 1: pride go, and so we'd end up just like treating
- 17:02Speaker 1: each other like enemies. I am so thankful for my
- 17:06Speaker 1: mom because I would call my mom up sometimes in tears,
- 17:11Speaker 1: sometimes with vulgarity towards my husband, and she would tell
- 17:15Speaker 1: me she'd be like, Jen, is there anything true that
- 17:19Speaker 1: Garrett said to you? Even if he was saying something
- 17:22Speaker 1: harshly or mean. Is there anything true that he said
- 17:26Speaker 1: that you should be changing. I can just tell you
- 17:29Speaker 1: that those words were what I needed to hear in
- 17:32Speaker 1: that moment, because I was so angry at my husband.
- 17:35Speaker 1: Because I'm like, oh, he said this mean thing to me,
- 17:38Speaker 1: or he you know, accused me of this. My mom
- 17:41Speaker 1: would be like, well, Jen, is there any truth in
- 17:43Speaker 1: those things that he's saying to you? Do you actually
- 17:46Speaker 1: need to change so that you can have a healthier,
- 17:50Speaker 1: happier marriage. That's what I needed. My mom was this
- 17:54Speaker 1: older woman to me that was teaching me to love
- 17:57Speaker 1: my husband. And now I can honestly say, almost eleven
- 18:00Speaker 1: years into my marriage, my marriage has never been stronger.
- 18:03Speaker 1: If I had had a mom who told me things like, oh,
- 18:07Speaker 1: you know, your husband is terrible, you need to leave him,
- 18:10Speaker 1: I would never have experienced the joy of marriage that
- 18:14Speaker 1: I do now how wonderful marriage can be because guess what,
- 18:19Speaker 1: your husband is broken. Your husband is a jerk sometimes,
- 18:24Speaker 1: but so are you. There are things that you've done
- 18:28Speaker 1: to your husband to hurt him. There are things that
- 18:31Speaker 1: you've done that cause your husband a lot of pain.
- 18:36Speaker 1: Being married is about grace and love. Now I want
- 18:41Speaker 1: to tread this topic very lightly because I am not
- 18:43Speaker 1: saying that you need to stay in a sickeningly abusive relationship,
- 18:48Speaker 1: like physically abusive relationship emotionally abusive. I think women throw
- 18:52Speaker 1: that term around a lot as an excuse to get
- 18:55Speaker 1: out of a marriage. I'm just going to say that
- 18:58Speaker 1: is a hard truth for all of you, ladies. I
- 18:59Speaker 1: think that that term is widely overused and an excuse
- 19:02Speaker 1: to get out of marriage. But I'm not saying you
- 19:05Speaker 1: need to stay in a physically abusive relationship where this
- 19:08Speaker 1: man is beating you up, or beating up your kids,
- 19:13Speaker 1: or sexually abusing you or the kids, or cheating on
- 19:17Speaker 1: you with other people. I am not saying that you
- 19:19Speaker 1: need to stay in that relationship. But if your husband
- 19:22Speaker 1: is just the average jerk, you need to learn how
- 19:24Speaker 1: to love that man, because I promise you that you're
- 19:27Speaker 1: a jerk too. You need to learn how to love
- 19:30Speaker 1: your husband. You need to learn how to live out
- 19:33Speaker 1: the vow that you made to God, and you need
- 19:36Speaker 1: to learn how to pray for your husband. And that's
- 19:38Speaker 1: what these older women must be teaching these young women,
- 19:42Speaker 1: because I can tell you know, if marriage is done
- 19:45Speaker 1: the right way the way that scripture tells you marriage
- 19:48Speaker 1: should be done if it is done that way, because
- 19:51Speaker 1: I've lived both ways. Marriage was not fun back in
- 19:54Speaker 1: those days. We were at each other's throats. There was
- 19:56Speaker 1: so much pride in both of our hearts. We are
- 19:59Speaker 1: blaming each other for everything that went wrong. Life was
- 20:01Speaker 1: not fun back in those days. But when marriage became
- 20:05Speaker 1: more of a partnership, where we let go of our
- 20:07Speaker 1: pride and started honestly serving each other, that was when
- 20:12Speaker 1: my husband and I got closer together and marriage honestly
- 20:17Speaker 1: became fun. Back in December, my husband and I went
- 20:20Speaker 1: to Vegas for our ten year wedding anniversary, and it
- 20:23Speaker 1: was the most enjoyable trip I ever went on. You know,
- 20:28Speaker 1: my husband and I were just so in sync. We
- 20:30Speaker 1: had so much fun together. That is what a marriage
- 20:34Speaker 1: can be like. And these older women are supposed to
- 20:37Speaker 1: be helping these younger women achieve that kind of marriage
- 20:41Speaker 1: by telling them, Hey, maybe in this situation, you have
- 20:45Speaker 1: a lot of pride. You know, your husband didn't talk
- 20:47Speaker 1: to you the right way, or your husband did something
- 20:49Speaker 1: to hurt you, But maybe think about some of those
- 20:51Speaker 1: things he's been telling you, he's been complaining about is
- 20:54Speaker 1: there something you can change to make your marriage relationship better?
- 20:58Speaker 1: Can you thank your husband for something that he did?
- 21:01Speaker 1: Can you be more appreciative of what he does outside
- 21:05Speaker 1: of the house. You know, the marriage relationship is not
- 21:08Speaker 1: just on the man. There are things that the woman
- 21:11Speaker 1: also has to do in order to have a successful marriage,
- 21:14Speaker 1: and that's what these older women are doing. You know,
- 21:18Speaker 1: it might feel harsh in the moment, especially if these
- 21:20Speaker 1: young women feel hurt over what their husbands have done,
- 21:23Speaker 1: but the goal of it is to actually help these
- 21:26Speaker 1: young women in the long run achieve the right kind
- 21:30Speaker 1: of marriage relationship that they can honestly be happy in,
- 21:34Speaker 1: be excited and proud of their husbands and the relationships
- 21:38Speaker 1: that they have with them. But women also need to
- 21:42Speaker 1: train these young women to love their children as well,
- 21:47Speaker 1: not just their husbands. This is probably a perplexing verse
- 21:51Speaker 1: for a lot of women because of that maternal instinct
- 21:54Speaker 1: that most women have towards their kids. You might be
- 21:57Speaker 1: asking what mother doesn't love their kidskids. Well, to answer
- 22:01Speaker 1: that question, all you have to do is scroll through
- 22:04Speaker 1: the motherhood TikTok for about five seconds and you will
- 22:08Speaker 1: find a woman that does not love her kids because
- 22:12Speaker 1: she's complaining about her kids, or she's saying I wish
- 22:14Speaker 1: I never had kids, or she's exploiting them for her
- 22:19Speaker 1: own personal gain, or doing any other number of absolutely
- 22:23Speaker 1: terrible things to mistreat or abuse or not love her children.
- 22:28Speaker 1: There are many women who struggle to love their kids,
- 22:31Speaker 1: and the reason they struggle so much is because parenthood
- 22:33Speaker 1: is honestly very hard. Now I'm not around kids, but
- 22:36Speaker 1: I know it's hard because I see my friends that
- 22:39Speaker 1: do have babies, that do have children that need constant attention.
- 22:44Speaker 1: And that constant attention that you have to give those
- 22:46Speaker 1: kids is time away from yourself, time away from the
- 22:49Speaker 1: things you want to do, time away from your job
- 22:52Speaker 1: or your husband. You have to literally be thinking about
- 22:55Speaker 1: a little human like one hundred percent of the day.
- 22:57Speaker 1: You are giving everything of yourself to care for another
- 23:01Speaker 1: human being. And that is hard because you can't be selfish.
- 23:05Speaker 1: And a lot of women, I am sure, struggle with
- 23:07Speaker 1: this very very greatly understandably in a lot of senses.
- 23:12Speaker 1: But that is why the older women need to be
- 23:15Speaker 1: there to train these younger women up not just to
- 23:18Speaker 1: love their husbands, but to love their children as well.
- 23:21Speaker 1: Because if you love your children, you're not going to
- 23:23Speaker 1: give your kids every single thing that they want. You're
- 23:26Speaker 1: gonna want to raise them the way that the Bible teaches,
- 23:30Speaker 1: not spoiling them all the time, but you know, sometimes
- 23:34Speaker 1: being the bad guy. And I'm sure that's very difficult
- 23:37Speaker 1: for women as well who want to have a fantastic
- 23:39Speaker 1: relationship with their kids and struggle to say no. That's
- 23:44Speaker 1: another reason the older women are important here is because
- 23:48Speaker 1: they can encourage these young mothers that when the mothers
- 23:51Speaker 1: discipline their kids, they're doing the right thing because they're
- 23:54Speaker 1: helping to raise a child that is going to be
- 23:57Speaker 1: a good adult, not somebody that gets their way all
- 24:00Speaker 1: the time, because that's just not how life works. And also,
- 24:04Speaker 1: they're going to train these women to teach their children
- 24:08Speaker 1: how to love Jesus, because we know that teaching them
- 24:12Speaker 1: about Jesus is the most important thing as Christians we
- 24:15Speaker 1: can ever teach our kids. So that's the point of
- 24:18Speaker 1: these older women to teach the younger to love their
- 24:21Speaker 1: husbands and to love their children in many different ways.
- 24:25Speaker 1: But also in verse five, Paul continues, and I'll go
- 24:27Speaker 1: through these pretty quickly. The older women need to teach
- 24:30Speaker 1: the younger to be sober minded again, not drunkards. They
- 24:34Speaker 1: also need to be chaste. That would mean purity, not
- 24:38Speaker 1: dressing in a way that encourages lust or acting in
- 24:42Speaker 1: a way that encourages lust, but being pure, because that
- 24:46Speaker 1: is what God wants from these young women. As we know,
- 24:49Speaker 1: lust is a sin, and so if these young women
- 24:52Speaker 1: are encouraging lust in other men, that is a sin
- 24:57Speaker 1: for them to do. The young women also need to
- 24:59Speaker 1: be workers at home kind being in subjection to their
- 25:03Speaker 1: own husbands that God's word may not be blasphemed. I'm
- 25:06Speaker 1: going to focus specifically on workers at home because I
- 25:09Speaker 1: think that could be misconstrued in some aspects to say
- 25:14Speaker 1: that every single woman must be a homemaker and can't
- 25:17Speaker 1: have a job outside of the house. But as we know,
- 25:20Speaker 1: based upon Proverbs thirty one, that entire chapter talks about
- 25:25Speaker 1: a working woman who didn't just work at home, but
- 25:28Speaker 1: she also had businesses where she went out and sold
- 25:32Speaker 1: her things at the marketplaces, and even bought and sold
- 25:36Speaker 1: land and planted vineyards. The woman in Proverbs thirty one
- 25:41Speaker 1: was not just a homemaker, even though it talked a
- 25:43Speaker 1: lot about her working at home. But the point of
- 25:46Speaker 1: Proverbs thirty one is to show that that woman focused
- 25:51Speaker 1: first on her husband and her family. The jobs that
- 25:55Speaker 1: she had were not for her own gain or for
- 25:58Speaker 1: her own pride. They were to supplement and help her
- 26:02Speaker 1: family at home, which is why it says that with
- 26:06Speaker 1: all of these things that she does, she clothes her
- 26:09Speaker 1: household in scarlet, which was a beautiful, expensive dye that
- 26:15Speaker 1: not many people had. And primarily in Proverbs thirty one,
- 26:20Speaker 1: this woman was talked to most about her love for
- 26:23Speaker 1: her family and how she made sure that her family
- 26:26Speaker 1: was well clothed, well fed, and taken care of before
- 26:30Speaker 1: she went out into the world to you know, have
- 26:33Speaker 1: all of these different careers and things. So we know
- 26:36Speaker 1: that women can absolutely have a job outside of the home,
- 26:41Speaker 1: and many women do, but it should not be a
- 26:43Speaker 1: job that takes away from the family. There are so
- 26:47Speaker 1: many women that I've seen that are like, I wanted
- 26:50Speaker 1: to go get a job for me. You know, I
- 26:52Speaker 1: was so sick of taking care of my family for
- 26:54Speaker 1: my entire life that I decided it was time to
- 26:57Speaker 1: do me. And she regrets all that, and her family
- 26:59Speaker 1: is secondary. So she's going to go out and now
- 27:02Speaker 1: do this career that she always wanted to do. That
- 27:06Speaker 1: is not how a young Christian woman should be viewing
- 27:08Speaker 1: her family. By all means, women can have jobs, and
- 27:12Speaker 1: they can find fulfillment in those jobs and love what
- 27:15Speaker 1: they do. There's nothing wrong with that, but those jobs
- 27:18Speaker 1: should not come before their families. Now, I don't know
- 27:21Speaker 1: if this rule applies to single women without children, you know,
- 27:25Speaker 1: because in today's day and age, you have to protect yourself,
- 27:28Speaker 1: you have to take care of yourself, and you can
- 27:30Speaker 1: absolutely be working just to support yourself. But if you
- 27:34Speaker 1: have a family, they should come first in your mind.
- 27:38Speaker 1: That is the order of how God set things up
- 27:41Speaker 1: in the woman's life. All right, Faith for listeners, Before
