- 0:13Speaker 1: to the Chapter a Day Audio Bible. I'm John Stonge,
- 0:17Speaker 1: and today we're in Isaiah chapter 48, and we'll be
- 0:22Speaker 1: reading from the English Standard Version. Hear this, O house
- 0:28Speaker 1: of Jacob, who are called by the name of Israel,
- 0:31Speaker 1: and who came from the waters of Judah, who swear
- 0:35Speaker 1: by the name of the Lord and confess the God
- 0:37Speaker 1: of Israel, but not in truth or right. For they
- 0:41Speaker 1: call themselves after the holy city, and stay themselves on
- 0:46Speaker 1: the God of Israel, the Lord of hosts is his name.
- 0:50Speaker 1: The former things I declare of old. They went out
- 0:54Speaker 1: from my mouth, and I announced them. Then suddenly I
- 0:57Speaker 1: did them, and they came to pass. because I know
- 1:00Speaker 1: that you are obstinate, and your neck is as an
- 1:04Speaker 1: iron sinew, and your forehead brass. I declared them to
- 1:09Speaker 1: you from of old. Before they came to pass, I
- 1:13Speaker 1: announced them to you, lest you should say, My idol
- 1:17Speaker 1: did them, my carved image and my metal image commanded them.
- 1:22Speaker 1: You have heard, now see all this, and will you
- 1:26Speaker 1: not declare it? From this time forth I announce to
- 1:30Speaker 1: you new things, hidden things that you have not known.
- 1:34Speaker 1: They are created now, not long ago. Before today you
- 1:39Speaker 1: have never heard of them, lest you should say, Behold,
- 1:43Speaker 1: I knew them. You have never heard. You have never known.
- 1:47Speaker 1: From of old your ear has not been opened. For
- 1:52Speaker 1: I knew that you would surely deal treacherously. and that
- 1:56Speaker 1: from before birth you were called a rebel. For my
- 2:00Speaker 1: name's sake I defer my anger. For the sake of
- 2:04Speaker 1: my praise I restrain it for you, that I may
- 2:08Speaker 1: not cut you off. Behold, I have refined you, but
- 2:13Speaker 1: not as silver. I have tried you in the furnace
- 2:17Speaker 1: of affliction. For my own sake, for my own sake
- 2:21Speaker 1: I do it. For how should my name be profaned?
- 2:25Speaker 1: My glory I will not give to another. Listen to me,
- 2:30Speaker 1: O Jacob, and Israel whom I called. I am he,
- 2:34Speaker 1: I am the first, and I am the last. My
- 2:38Speaker 1: hand laid the foundation of the earth, and my right
- 2:41Speaker 1: hand spread out the heavens. When I call to them,
- 2:45Speaker 1: they stand forth together. Assemble all of you and listen.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Who among them has declared these things? The Lord loves him.
- 2:55Speaker 1: He shall perform his purpose on Babylon, and his arm
- 2:58Speaker 1: shall be against the Chaldeans. I, even I, have spoken
- 3:03Speaker 1: and called him. I have brought him, and he will
- 3:07Speaker 1: prosper in his way. Draw near to me, hear this.
- 3:12Speaker 1: From the beginning I have not spoken in secret. From
- 3:16Speaker 1: the time it came to be, I have been there.
- 3:19Speaker 1: And now the Lord God has sent me and his spirit.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel,
- 3:29Speaker 1: I am the Lord your God who teaches you to profit,
- 3:33Speaker 1: who leads you in the way you should go. Oh,
- 3:36Speaker 1: that you had paid attention to my commandments. Then your
- 3:40Speaker 1: peace would have been like a river, and your righteousness
- 3:44Speaker 1: like the waves of the sea. Your offspring would have
- 3:48Speaker 1: been like the sand, and your descendants like its grain's.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Their name would never be cut off or destroyed from
- 3:56Speaker 1: before me. Go out from Babylon. Flee from Chaldea. Declare
- 4:02Speaker 1: this with a shout of joy. Proclaim it. Send it
- 4:06Speaker 1: out to the end of the earth. Say, The Lord
- 4:09Speaker 1: has redeemed his servant Jacob. They did not thirst when
- 4:14Speaker 1: he led them through the deserts. He made water flow
- 4:17Speaker 1: for them from the rock. He split the rock and
- 4:20Speaker 1: the water gushed out. There is no peace, says the Lord,
- 4:25Speaker 1: for the wicked. Let's pray. Lord, we thank you for
- 4:31Speaker 1: your word, and we thank you for the privilege to
- 4:33Speaker 1: be able to look at this portion of Scripture today.
- 4:36Speaker 1: We thank you, Lord, for the things that you reveal
- 4:38Speaker 1: to us in it, the fact that your glory is
- 4:41Speaker 1: not something that's shared with idols or false gods, but
- 4:46Speaker 1: that you call people unto yourself, and by nature we
- 4:50Speaker 1: tend to be stiff-necked against you. but you invite us
- 4:53Speaker 1: to repent of our unbelief and trust in you. Lord,
- 4:57Speaker 1: we know that we come to you through your Son,
- 4:59Speaker 1: Jesus Christ, by the power of your Holy Spirit. And
- 5:03Speaker 1: even as we look at this chapter from the book
- 5:06Speaker 1: of Isaiah, we're reminded of the fact that you are
- 5:09Speaker 1: three in one and that you intervene in the lives
- 5:12Speaker 1: of your children. So Lord, thank you for doing this.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Thank you for your love and thank you for your
- 5:18Speaker 1: presence with us today. We commit this day to your
- 5:20Speaker 1: care and we thank you for all of these things
- 5:23Speaker 1: in Jesus' name. Amen.
