- 0:53campaign and I want to thank some of folks everyone who sent in donations throughout
- 0:59the year. Received donation from Letitia at just the very day that I was
- 1:06recording this episode. Now, the listener Support campaign is basically how we pay
- 1:12the bills for a lot of things that go with the show and also kind
- 1:18of lead into the long term goal. Ideally, I'd like to focus my
- 1:23life on those things that I'm passionate about, including old time radio podcasts.
- 1:29They're probably you know, two or three other podcasts I would love to start.
- 1:33I have not had the time, So the money that we get from
- 1:37the listener Support campaign it kind of helps towards that end. The long term
- 1:41goal of being supported by writing and podcasting able to focus on those things.
- 1:46Also expenses that do go along with the program. We pay for monitoring for
- 1:53virus attacks that took down our show several months back, and the last here
- 2:00we also had to switch to the dedicated server for our web hosting just because
- 2:06of all the programs we were hosting and bandwidth. We're using a research books,
- 2:13and there are a few materials and sources of audio for the programs that
- 2:20have require some expenses, so it all kind of doesn't add up. Your
- 2:24support is appreciated. Now during the whole year, we will send you access
- 2:29to our listener support to our premium site with all donations of seven dollars or
- 2:35more. And our premium site is primarily designed for folks who don't have the
- 2:42smartphone so they can't take advantage of the app. You get all the extras
- 2:46that we have on the app so you can download them on your computer and
- 2:53listen to them. But during the Listener Support campaign we give an extra special
- 3:00thank you to those who give twenty dollars or more, and among those items
- 3:06at the twenty dollars level, can send you one of the great colonial radio
- 3:10theater dramas and they are really doing a great job keeping American radio drama alive.
- 3:19And I'll offer you one of the favorites. A lot of listeners have
- 3:22absolutely loved their Perry Mason's Father Brown, also King Solomon's Mind and Zoro programs
- 3:30just wonderfully acted, wonderfully perform, great job of bringing the theater of the
- 3:35mind into the twenty first century. And that is of it, and that
- 3:38is one of the options at twenty dollars more. And you can go to
- 3:43support dot Great Detectives dot net to view all of the options. And I'll
- 3:46have one more I'll mention after the program this week, we are also going
- 3:52to be announcing what news shows we're going to bring to you when our next
- 3:59season gets underway, and it will and one of our listeners Support thank you
- 4:03guests will tie into that. But let's go ahead and we will take a
- 4:08lesson and I'll and I'll be back after a show to let you know what
- 4:13programming you'll hear on Monday once the five part Johnny Dollar episodes in. But
- 4:18here now is the Bennett Manner from Hollywood. It's time now for Johnny Dollar
- 4:28Andrew Court. Johnny, how'd you like to go to San Francisco? What's
- 4:30up? Andy? We've written a lot of insurance for an independent contractor out
- 4:34there man named Arnold Bennett. A last night, his latest project went up
- 4:38in smoke an office building he completed a month ago. How much is the
- 4:42policy worth? There were five companies involved. They took it on at one
- 4:45hundred thousand apiece and turned it over to US half a million bucks YEP.
- 4:48I talked with the arsenal inspector for National Fire Underwriters in Simrancisco. He said,
- 4:53the fire looked phony. I'll pack my things tonight and every weekday night.
- 5:04Bob Bailey, in the Transcribed Adventures of the Man with the Action Packed
- 5:08Expenser cout America's fabulous freelance insurance investigators, truly Johnny Dollar. Expense accounts submitted
- 5:27by Special Investigator Johnny Dollar to the for State Fire Insurance Corporation, forty sixty
- 5:31five Spear Boulevard, Hertford, Connecticut. The following is an accounting of expendit
- 5:35yours during my investigation of the Pennett matter. Expense account Item one fifteen dollars
- 5:46flowers for my girl. I wasn't able to keep our date. Instead,
- 5:49I met for State Fire Investigator Andrew Cord at his office and we made immediate
- 5:54arrangements to fly to California. I had him two twenty five dollars and six
- 5:58cents one raincoats him three one hundred and forty four dollars and fifteen cents air
- 6:02transportation heart for New York, San Francisco, our roots. Andrew Cord filled
- 6:08me in on the details concerning Arnold Bennett's Oh, Johnny, is things stand
- 6:15now? Bennett hasn't file acclaim yet, although I imagine that'll be coming through
- 6:17pretty fast. If I know him, I met him once when he was
- 6:21in New York getting money to finance one of his big subdivisions. Yeah,
- 6:25seems I've heard of him. Oh he's made time in life a couple of
- 6:29times each. Oh yeah, I met him. I said to myself,
- 6:31Andy, looked well on this man. He may be the last of his
- 6:34kind. Oh, how's that? Al Nnold Bennett must be past sixty now.
- 6:40He's been everything in his lifetime. Sailor, soldier, lawyer, financier,
- 6:45bootlegger, gun runner, lord knows what all talk fast, worked hard
- 6:49and well. He couldn't get one way, he got another. All in
- 6:54all, he's done pretty well. It shows all over him. I didn't
- 6:58like him, Johnny will go on, go on, Well, maybe I
- 7:01was just jealous of his aggressiveness, or maybe it's that I've just heard stories
- 7:06of how he ran rough, shot over big and little. Wow about this
- 7:13new building of Bennett's it burned down? Yeah, yeah, Well, the
- 7:15man in San Francisco is pretty sure the fire was of incendiary origin. What
- 7:19can he prove it? Well, that'll be up to him and you and
- 7:23me for State and National Fire and the writers are going to handle the investigation.
- 7:27Fedro, Great Atlantic and Try State under writers aren't going to send any
- 7:30minute at all. They figured it's best not to clutter things up. But
- 7:33proving the fire wasn't senty or may not be too easy. Andy, Well,
- 7:36we'll see when we get there. There's a standoff motive in the whole
- 7:41thing. We can start with that. And what's that Bennett's in financial trouble,
- 7:45big trouble. Taxes on the fire wasn't out. I see. Well,
- 7:49who's the arson man in San Francisco? Billy Underwood? Oh good,
- 7:53good, Bill Hender was one of the best arson men in the business.
- 7:56Well, it's going to take all of us to get Bennett. Jellny,
- 8:00we'll explit it three ways. We'll let Underwood handle the fire evidence. You
- 8:03can play front for us with Bennett and I'll comb around in the financial situation.
- 8:07Yeah, well, we sure got our work cut out for us.
- 8:11But listen, Andy, you sounds so it is scared of this guy Bennett.
- 8:16I am kind of why nobody's ever beat him. Expense account item four
- 8:26seven dollars and a half vincent Atle's. Upon arrival in San Francisco, Andy
- 8:30Cord and I checked in at the Fairmount and then went downstairs, rented a
- 8:33car, and drove out to the scene of the fire. Bill Underwood was
- 8:37already there, had been there all day. We all shook hands, and
- 8:39then Underwood broke it down. Bill was a bit of a pedant at things
- 8:43pretty well organized for us. Oh, it's this way. The watchman on
- 8:50duty saw a man lettering in the vicinity of the building when he came to
- 8:52work at six o'clock. Three other witnesses remember the same man, A druggist
- 8:58billy station attendant on his way home from work, and a newsboy got a
- 9:03description. I did mail. Caucasian twenty five to thirty, medium build,
- 9:11approximately one to seventeen, dark hair and dark complexion. That's it. I
- 9:18have to talk to the police hit. I haven't had a chance, Billy.
- 9:20You know they got eight men on this Wow that much of a description.
- 9:24It might make it easier, I sure hope. So so far,
- 9:26the description hasn't fitted anyone in the files yet. The newsboy swears that he
- 9:31saw this man sneak around the side of the building about six o'clock. The
- 9:35fire broke out about six thirty. Anybody see him leave? The newsboy says
- 9:41he saw him catch a bus on the corner right before the fire broke out.
- 9:45Might help us. The bus driver on the line wasn't any help.
- 9:48He's pretty busy that time of night. Have we had a chance to go
- 9:50over this yet? Well, we started. I'm working with a fire inspector
- 9:54on it, and as soon as we come across anything, I'll let you
- 9:58know. We can't overlook any possible on this bill any Yeah, I know
- 10:03about Bennett. He's been out here asking me who I am, what I'm
- 10:07doing. He doesn't like it? Oh he does. Yeah, he learned
- 10:11to swear somewhere along the line. Or has he filed claim yet? Oh?
- 10:16We haven't heard. It's a professional firing job. I'm sure of it.
- 10:20Yeah, sure, Well, I haven't got what I need in the
- 10:22way of concrete evidence yet, but I'll find it somewhere in these ashes.
- 10:30The place burnt too well and too fast to be anything but professional. It
- 10:33was drafted. The fire got hot and going before anybody even spotted. Well,
- 10:37this is a little out of my league, Billy, tell me more.
- 10:39You see, an amateur will mess it up. Generally, it'll smoke
- 10:43a lot, and somebody will spot it. And now a bug, you
- 10:48know, an he'll do it as good a job as a professional, but
- 10:52he'll stick around and and watch it burn. Stand a good chance of getting
- 10:54caught. He might even call up somebody and tell him how happy he is.
- 11:00But this bird, when the newsboys saw getting out of here fast,
- 11:05well, he sounds like he knows his business. It's business with him.
- 11:11Then it'll be my job to connect him and Bennett somehow. And that's the
- 11:13tough part. Yeah, all I got to do is play around in the
- 11:16ashes. Oh, Johnny, Yeah, watch a step with Bennett. Sure
- 11:24he doesn't care about anybody. I spent another two hours with Cordon Underwood covering
- 11:35the ruins of the ten story office building that had been gutted the day before.
- 11:39Underwood acquainted Court and me with all of the necessary details all he could.
- 11:43That night we sat with the three witnesses at a special show up in
- 11:46the Hall of Justice. Sixty odd suspects were paraded out. There were no
- 11:50identifications. The next morning, while Corton Underwood carried on with their part of
- 11:58the investigation, I went on to Arnold and It's real estate office near the
- 12:01Presidio. Remember that old saw how a woman in love is always beautiful.
- 12:09When I walked in, I had no idea Elizabeth Bennett was in love,
- 12:11and no idea that she was beautiful. Her sallow face without makeup, framed
- 12:16in a wisp of stringy blonde hair, wasn't flattered by the shapeless black dress
- 12:20and low heeled shoes she was wearing. Certainly not the going idea of beauty.
- 12:24Now did her conversation reveal anything to indicate love? Yes? May I
- 12:31have you, mister Bennett? Please? My name's Dollar, Dollar, dule
- 12:35l R. He's not expecting me. Your business, mister Dollar four State
- 12:39Fire Insurance Corporation. It's about the fire that destroyed the office building. Oh
- 12:43yes, just a moment, please, Well what does it Liz? Mister
- 12:48Dollar is here? Uncle Arne. I don't want to see anybody today.
- 12:50I told you that, you idiot, mister dollars from four State. It's
- 12:54about the fire. Oh well send them in and go out to lunch.
- 12:58Yes, sir, it's all right. Mister Donnas, straight ahead. He
- 13:03always liked that. He's nice today. Thanks Elizabeth. That's your name,
- 13:07isn't it. Yes, I'm Elizabeth Bennett. Go straight ahead. Dollar.
- 13:16That's right, mister Bennett. Come in, come in. I'm not going
- 13:20to ask you to sit down. I know why you're here. You have
- 13:22insurance investigator written all over your face. Oh in that case, we can
- 13:26get right down to the business in hand. What caused the fire? I
- 13:30don't know yet. It was deliberate what Somebody started that fire, that's what.
- 13:35And I know who. Get him and you'll save yourself from work.
- 13:39Tony Midas. Tony Midas, who's that the crack pot that's set fire to
- 13:43my building. He's out of prison now and he's swore he'd get me.
- 13:46Look, maybe you'd better tell me just who he is and why he'd want
- 13:48to get you. Tony Midas worked for me once. I caught him stealing
- 13:52money, and I prosecuted him. We sent to prison for five years,
- 13:56and he's the one you want. You seem pretty certain of that. Of
- 13:58course, I'm certain of it. I know what enemies I have, what
- 14:01friends don't tell me. I'm going to have to pussy it around with someone
- 14:05like you and get any place in this whole affair. Well, there are
- 14:07some witnesses who got to look at the man who started the fire. At
- 14:11least it's a good bet he's the one more after So tell me what does
- 14:15this Tony Midas look like. I don't remember I hardly ever remember faces.
- 14:18But you remembered his threat. You bet your last nickel. I remember his
- 14:22threat, and he's the kind of screwy punk to carry it out. Last
- 14:26week it was a small story in the newspaper that he was being released from
- 14:28prison. Now I will certainly look him up and I have a talk with
- 14:31him. That's very good of you, I'm sure. Oh. Now,
- 14:33look, this can be a very difficult thing all the way around, or
- 14:37we can all cooperate, mister Bennett. I'll cooperate. I know why you're
- 14:41in town. I know who you came with. I met that glorified fire
- 14:45inspector yesterday Underwood. You people don't fool me, and I'm not trying to
- 14:48fool you. Get Tony Midas and you've got your man. Did you tell
- 14:52the police about Midas? No, I was waiting for some bird like you
- 14:54to walk in here with your high handed attitude. Now I've told you.
- 14:58Now you can get out and get busy. Look him. Arnold Bennett lived
- 15:07up to all of his advanced notices. And then so I'm paid very well
- 15:11to stand and take what i have to to find out what I want to
- 15:13find out. Sometimes it's not enough money. A review of the trial on
- 15:20proceedings in which Tony Midas had been convicted of grand theft his threats at the
- 15:24time of his trial substantiated Bennett's information. That didn't surprise me. What did
- 15:31surprise me was that one of the three witnesses identified Tony Midas's mug pictures the
- 15:35man seen in the vicinity of the building. The night of the fire,
- 15:37an APV went out for Midas, the San Francisco police began to turn the
- 15:41town upside down looking for him. By five o'clock in the afternoon, the
- 15:45other two witnesses had made up their minds that he was the man they had
- 15:48seen After all, the case against Midas became stronger, it was imperative that
- 15:52he'd relocated. Johnny Dollar. This is Elizabeth Bennett. Mister Dollar, remember
- 16:03in my uncle's office. I remember, mister Dollar. You're looking for Tony
- 16:06Mitis, aren't you. You don't have to answer. I know you are.
- 16:10I think I can help you find him, but he's not the one
- 16:11you're looking for. Look if you turn him in, let me finish and
- 16:15then we'll talk about him. I live at ten thirty eight Mirada Drive.
- 16:18I'll be home in an hour. We can talk there. Two minutes later,
- 16:26when I was putting on my coat, I received another phone call,
- 16:29this one from Bennett' lawyer. He advised me that Arnold Bennett of file claim
- 16:33it would bring suit if his claim was not honored in the prescribed length of
- 16:36time. I thanked him for the information and went downstairs. Began to look
- 16:38around for care a police card. Kareem did the driveway, and a familiar
- 16:44hat on top of a familiar head leaned out, Hey, Johnny, No,
- 16:47yeah, any cord I still left it all. I'll ben okay inspector
- 16:52truck Inspector Kane, Hi, what's up? Somebody shot Arnold Bennett ten minutes
- 16:56ago Dollar Building Underwood. Johnny, they're trying to get you all over town.
- 17:22Hotel said to call you at this skyline number. I'm out of Donald
- 17:26Bennet's house. He's been shot. What who shot him? You don't know
- 17:30yet. I'm a transfusion here before they take him to the hospital. Look,
- 17:33Johnny, I got something to show you, now what some ashes we
- 17:36just analyzed the Bennett Building was fired by a pro you sell you, Lloyd,
- 17:41and a wick made out of paraffin. I can prove it. I
- 17:44hope Bennett lives to hear that. Expense accounts submitted by Special Investigator Johnny Dollar
- 17:56to the Ford State Fire Insurance Corporation, forty six sixty five Spear Boulevard,
- 18:00Hartford, Connecticut. The following is an accounting of expenditures during my investigation of
- 18:04the Bennett Arson fraud. Arnold Bennett was removed to the hospital where he was
- 18:12given a fifty to fifty chance of recovering from a thirty eight slug that had
- 18:17entered his chest. There was no weapon lying about and no witnesses in the
- 18:19remote hilly section of San Francisco where he lived to give any information concerning the
- 18:23attempted murder. The police were more anxious than ever to find Tony Midas,
- 18:29the man Bennett had put the finger on earlier. The reasoning was that if
- 18:33he could burn down a building worth half a million to get back at Arnold
- 18:36Bennett, he also might shoot him. I told Andy Cord about Underwood's findings
- 18:40when the police car got us to the scene of the shooting. So you
- 18:44Lloyd and Tariff and Wick, did you say, Yeah, that's what Bill
- 18:47Underwood said on the phone. Well, then it would point away from Tony
- 18:49Midas. He was an embezzler, not an arsonist. Maybe he was that
- 18:53policeman over there. Oh, that's inspected Dicken. Well. I talked to
- 18:57him about it for a while. He said, lived in sam Quentin with
- 19:00a man named Hanley, a professional burnner. Yeah. Well Hanley could have
- 19:04taught Midas a few tracks of the trade. Yeah, it's possible, Joy,
- 19:10I don't know, at least none of it is sure that he can
- 19:11prove it head and incendiary origin. Well, that's the first hurdle. Maybe
- 19:17we can't tie it to Bennett, that Johnny. If Midas did it,
- 19:19let's wait and see what Bennett has to say when he can talk. I
- 19:22think I'll get on over to the hospital. Okay, Oh, here's something
- 19:26that came up. Yeah, you said Bennett attributed everything to this Tony Midas,
- 19:30and there might have been something personal in it too. Midas is married
- 19:33to Bennett's niece, Elizabeth. He's what. Yeah, she married him a
- 19:37month before he was convicted. Well, that might explain some things. Yeah.
- 19:41She called me tonight and said she had some information for me about Midas.
- 19:45I was on my way to see her when this happened. Oh,
- 19:48you haven't talked to her yet. No. No, let's see, there's
- 19:52ten thirty eight Marada Drive. What if that's far from here. No,
- 19:57Johnny, not far at all. This happens to be ten thirty eight right
- 20:02here. Oh, we'd better tell the police about her, Andy. Andy
- 20:08Cord went on over to the hospital to await results in Arnold Bennett. I
- 20:12spoke to the inspector in charge and told him the information about Elizabeth Bennett.
- 20:17The police added the name to the apbe already out for Tony Midas, and
- 20:19that's the way the case stood at midnight. By morning, the hospital reported
- 20:23that Arnold Bennett would recover from the gunshot wound. Elizabeth Bennett had not been
- 20:27located, nor had her husband, Tony Midas. I always fixed my own
- 20:34dinner, poached egg in half and half ulcers. Name's Dollar, Yeah,
- 20:41that's right, insurance investigator. You want something to you? Coffee? Maybe?
- 20:45No, thanks, mister Engle? Nine to five? Finish, go
- 20:48right hand? What led you to me the notations about the trial? Mister
- 20:56Engle, you were the defense attorney for Tony Midas or anxious to talk to
- 21:00him? I defended him. I don't think I am going to be much
- 21:04help Dollar. I haven't seen him since he got out of No idea what
- 21:07he is. We'll find him, mister Ingle. And what's it all about?
- 21:11Well, Tony Midas has been identified as the man who started a fire
- 21:14in the Bennett building, or at least I was seen in the vicinity of
- 21:18the building when I went up. I'm sorry to hear that, are you,
- 21:21mister Ingle. Tony Midas was a nice kid who got in a little
- 21:25trouble. Everything was against him at the trial. Bennett poured it on.
- 21:29He didn't have to, but he did. He could have let him off.
- 21:32You are Midas's lawyer. Did you try to talk Bennett int to Letty
- 21:36Minosoft. No, I didn't. Nobody talks Arnold Bennett into anything. Oh,
- 21:41Tony never would admit taking the funds. He said he was framed,
- 21:45but he didn't have a prayer with all the evidence against him. Yeah.
- 21:48I read a transcript of the trim. Then you know, Tony Midas pleaded
- 21:52not guilty in the face of everything, and he went up. I wanted
- 21:55him to make a guilty please in rest on the mercy of the court.
- 21:57It was his first offense while he's now and it looks like he's trying to
- 22:02get even with Bennett for prosecuting him. All full lowsy ten grand. Yeah,
- 22:07did you ever get in touch with you? I told you no,
- 22:11no phone call. No. Do you have any idea where he'd be in
- 22:15tom mister, No, I don't. Okay, Then I guess I leave
- 22:19you to your eggs dollar. Yeah. If if you find Tony Midas,
- 22:30I'd like to know about it. Why, mister Engle, just curious.
- 22:33I'd like to see him. I'd like to see what five years in prison
- 22:36does to a kid like that, mister Engle. Arnold Bennett was shot in
- 22:41his home last night. No, that's all you have to say. What
- 22:47else is there to say? You could have danced? Is he alive or
- 22:51is he dead? For one thing? Suppose I don't care. Okay,
- 22:53he's still alive. I think he'll pull through. Who do you think shot
- 22:57him, mister Engle, I don't know. They're looking for Tony Midas for
- 23:00that too. Did you know Bennett's niece Elizabeth As? I meant, well,
- 23:03I'm looking for her too. She's married to Tony Midas. Yes,
- 23:07because I knew. I knew about that. It's an I'm asterringle. What
- 23:11is this going to be? An inquisition? That egg and a half and
- 23:14a half doesn't interest you no matter how much you look at it. Will
- 23:17you want to leave me alone and go find your fire bug? Come on,
- 23:19let's have the story. I don't know any story to tell you.
- 23:22Was it spite that sent Tony Midas to prison because of him and Elizabeth Bennett?
- 23:26No? No, they proved him a thief. I'll throw one more
- 23:29thing at you. Angel Bennett wasn't always too good about paying his taxes.
- 23:33Our accounting man has him pegged him for exactly what he is? An opportunist,
- 23:37a dodger, a man out to get what he can for as little
- 23:41as he can, no matter what. Yeah, we cover everything in a
- 23:44case like this. You'll never get Arnold Bennett. He's too good for you,
- 23:48Dollar, too good for your insurance company, your fire investigators, everybody,
- 23:52no man stronger ever lived. We've already got evidence that proves the building
- 23:56was fired. I'm here to get all the story, and I think you're
- 23:59the man who can tell it. Why me, because you work for him.
- 24:02I never worked for him never. All right, we'll let that go
- 24:06for now. But you can tell me this was Tony Midas, the kind
- 24:10of man who'd start that fire. You can tell me if he really wasn't
- 24:14embezzler. You can tell me if he tried to kill Arnold Bennett. I
- 24:18can't tell you anything for a fact, Dollar, All I have is my
- 24:21own personal opinion. Well that's what I want. I want that. I'd
- 24:23like your opinion. Now, there's something about Bennett's niece being married to Midas,
- 24:27isn't there a wife can't testify against her husband. Everyone else in Bennett's
- 24:32off is testified against Midas. She didn't I see now the opinion. Oh,
- 24:37come on, Angel, come on, you're right, Dollar, I
- 24:42have got ideas. All of them make me sick inside. Tony Midas stood
- 24:48there and told me he was innocent. He said it a million times if
- 24:52he said at once, he said he thought Bennett was framing him to cover
- 24:55up for income tax shortages. It's just surmise, but it fits. Midas
- 25:00was a green kid hired into the company by Bennett. He might have been
- 25:03hired to be framed on a phony embezzling charge that had give Bennett a good
- 25:07excuse on his taxes for a while. I've I've been fooled a lot of
- 25:11times, Tony Midas, fool you, I don't know. I wish I
- 25:15could have gotten him off. I tried, Dollar, Believe me, I
- 25:18tried to get him off. You come here to me and say he's out
- 25:22of prison now and getting even he's burnt down a building and tried to murder
- 25:25Arnold Bennett. Tony was a nice boy, Dollar, but now his whole
- 25:29life's gone. And for what. I hope you don't find him or her.
- 25:33I hope they go far away and stay away and don't have to talk
- 25:37to anybody ever. They deserve that. I hope nobody ever finds him.
- 25:44But we did find Tony Midas. He was right under our noses all the
- 25:47time. When I got back to the hotel, there was a message for
- 25:51me to get down to the County Hospital. Cord was waiting for me there.
- 25:55They took us downstairs and then we were both standing in a room looking
- 25:57at Tony Midas before they took him across the hall to the Morgue. Funny
- 26:04thing, Johnny, there's been an alarm out on this guy for thirty six
- 26:10hours. Everybody's been looking everywhere for him, and he turns up right here.
- 26:15Only he's dead. Yeah, what killed him? T B. He
- 26:19had it awful bat in the same Quentin. It's in the sick ward his
- 26:22last two years. When his time was up last week he made them release
- 26:26him, but he wound up here and died in his hospital. It's rough,
- 26:32just a kid. Yeah. Up until that time there had been some
- 26:42kind of a case against Tony Midas, but obviously since he had been dead
- 26:47almost two days, it was impossible to connect him with the attempt on Arnold
- 26:49Bennett's life and the firing of the building. So we were right back where
- 26:53we started from, trying to make a case against Arnold Bennett's who was still
- 26:57lay in his hospital room and refused to talk to anybody who came near him.
- 27:02All right, Johnny, know what, Ben, It's gonna be hard.
- 27:06We're gonna have to work around him. His niece is the best opening
- 27:07I can think of. Worry is she? Police haven't located, not a
- 27:11trace. Andy, she had some information for me when she called last night.
- 27:15I still want to get it if we got a break. George Foley's
- 27:19in town. Who's that best city lord and wickman in the country. If
- 27:23you happen to want a building burned down? One of the policemen at the
- 27:26hospital spotted him in the lobby trying to see Arnold Bennett. I a tired
- 27:30Johnny. Where is he now? They followed him to an address on Barrango
- 27:33Street. They aren't going to move in until we decide something. Twelve minutes
- 27:38later, Andy Court, Bill Underwood and I were standing in front of a
- 27:41decrepit looking boarding house on Barrengo Street talking to the three policemen from the San
- 27:45Francisco Police Department. Dollar Underwood, Aye, she wants the story of well
- 27:52the way we see it. Foley still trying to get part of his money
- 27:55for burning the building. He took a chance coming to the hospital tonight to
- 27:57see Bennett. No kidding, he'll probably make another try. You boys have
- 28:03more at stake here than anybody. If you want to talk to him,
- 28:04try to make a deal with him to turn on Bennett. How's the time?
- 28:07What do you say, Johnny? O, Wait a minute. We
- 28:08aren't sure of anything about him. Oh he fills the bill, Johnny,
- 28:11Paraffin and Wick jobs are few and far between, but nothing more than that.
- 28:15I'd stake my rep on fully being our boy for what it's worth.
- 28:18All three witnesses now pick his picture instead of Midas. Oh a good defense
- 28:22attorney. Get that thrown right out. What do you want to do?
- 28:25Oh well, let's shake him up a bit. Okay, go ahead,
- 28:29we'll be covering the back in front. Come on, we know he's in
- 28:56the Johnny, let's bust out. No wait, watchohn Eddie, all right,
- 29:11all right enough, that's enough, joky Bill Hendie, Yeah, all
- 29:15right, it's a boy. Good on your feet. Let's get out of
- 29:18here. H Now, here's our star to tell you about tomorrow's intriguing episode
- 29:37of this week's story. Tomorrow, we have an arsonist right in the palm
- 29:41of our hands with very surprising results. Join us, won't you Yours Truly?
- 29:48Johnny Dollar? Yours Truly Johnny Dollar is starring Bob Bailey, is transcribed
- 30:06in Hollywood, written by John Dawson. It is produced and directed by Jack
- 30:10Johnstone. Be sure to join us tomorrow night at same time and station for
- 30:15the next exciting episode of Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar. This is Roy Rowan
- 30:26speaking Welcome back. It's definitely kind of different to see Johnny Doller as part
- 31:34of some big team. It's not unheard of to have a larger team than
- 31:41just Johnny on the scene, but it's kind of unusual for this series.
- 31:45And also, you know, I think we've heard Johnny say several times it's
- 31:52not his job to find a way to avoid paying off on acclaim sub Skeptics
- 31:57of insurance companies might say, you know, this would kind of prove otherwise,
- 32:06But in this case, they're dealing with a crafty operator and they've just
- 32:09they're down one red herring. But it's a question now if they can tie
- 32:15the firebug back to mister Bennett. Of course they We've got three more episodes
- 32:22to wrap this up on and we'll bring them to you on Wednesday. All
- 32:28right, Well, we will go ahead and announce before we get into the
- 32:35listener or comments, We'll go ahead and announce the show that we'll take Johnny
- 32:40Dollar's place on Mondays once we finished the five part Dollar serials. When we
- 32:49finish that, we'll go back to Johnny Dollar just being on Fridays and it
- 32:52will be replaced on Monday and Wednesday. And the show that will replace Johnny
- 32:58Dollar on Monday is Pursuit, a CBS series that featured Inspector Peter Black of
- 33:07Scotland Yard. The series starred at different times, Ted de Courcia and Ben
- 33:14Right. Following that series, we'll bring you The Saint with most of those
- 33:20episodes featuring the Great Vincent Price. So coming up in our next season,
- 33:24look for Pursuit and The Saint coming to Mondays. All right, Well,
- 33:30continue on with listener comments and feedback. And I received a comment from the
- 33:37McLean on the McLean matter from Christine, who writes, I just listened to
- 33:44part five. The episode was brilliant, even though part three was missing.
- 33:46I felt like we got the whole story so well acted by every player,
- 33:51and the story itself was excellent. Maybe I find it particularly interesting because I
- 33:54work for Life insurance company. In any case, it was right. Thanks
- 34:00for bringing it well. Thank you so much, Christine, and I apologies
- 34:04the listeners who had difficulties with the downloads on the mcclan matter, but with
- 34:08idiot that fixed so you can redownload that. We have one listener comment on
- 34:17iTunes, Galactic Pea Rots. I remember listening to this show on the big
- 34:23broadcast on w AM you when I lived in the DC metro area. I'm
- 34:29so grateful to have these episodes available as a podcasts so I can listen to
- 34:32them at my leisure. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I
- 34:36hope you're able to upload re upload the old episodes which have disappeared, presumably
- 34:42to a space limitation issue with iTunes. Thanks so much, Galactic p.
- 34:47And that's referring to the Johnny Doll yours truly Johnny Dollar episode feed and Johnny
- 34:55Dollar is actually and maybe along Sherlock Holmes, because there were some video theater
- 35:02episodes thrown in with two years of programming, but most of the shows.
- 35:07We have one hundred and ninety nine shows. Is our maximum feed size any
- 35:14more than that? And it starts, and it starts dropping episodes, So
- 35:20Johnny dollars above two hundred episodes, particularly since we've been doing three episodes a
- 35:25week, and unfortunately there's no way to add them back in other than to
- 35:31rerun previous programs. However, you can go to archives Great Detectives dot net
- 35:39and download any shows that have fallen off onto your onto your mobile device,
- 35:50or just onto your computer. And yeah, it would probably not be advisable
- 35:57to wait for us to upload again because yeah, we'd have to rerun the
- 36:00episodes. And as of this recording, we're kind of in the middle of
- 36:07the EDM and O'Brien episodes as to availability, So if you're interested in downloading
- 36:13old episodes off the feed, probably the best good idea to download as quickly
- 36:19as possible. And then we have this comment from Denise love the shows,
- 36:23but could you save the commentary till the end? Well, I definitely appreciate
- 36:30the viewpoint, and usually commentary doesn't go on long at the beginning. Oftentimes
- 36:38actual speaking is a minute or last, certainly not today as we're introducing the
- 36:44listener support campaign. But we try and keep it short and save most of
- 36:49our talks for the end. But sometimes you just got to have some flexibility,
- 36:53so hope listeners appreciate that. And you know, if you want to
- 36:59fast forward, just fast forward ahead. But sometimes there's something there you'll want
- 37:05to listen to as well. So uh again, listener choice always the best
- 37:09thing. Okay, well, that will do it for today. We'll be
- 37:14back tomorrow with mister Moto and another new show's announcement as well as I think
- 37:22I'm surprised. I hope you'll find pleasant and so we'll see you tomorrow.
- 37:28We're mister Moto. In the meantime, send your comments to Box thirteen A
