- 0:00Speaker 1: Now, from the Star Reynolds Sports Desk, your 93.3 KJR
- 0:04Speaker 1: FM Sports Headlines.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Good morning. Happy Labor Day. Not just a Monday. A
- 0:09Speaker 2: Labor Day. Headlines are brought to you by Frost Brewed.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Of course, I had as cold as the Rockies. 118th
- 0:14Speaker 2: Apple Cup. Wasn't pretty. Wasn't smooth. It was another win
- 0:18Speaker 2: for the Washington Huskies in the long series. They overcame themselves.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Some really unintelligent plays by the Huskies. They beat the
- 0:27Speaker 2: Washington State Cougars and Jessamyn McIntyre's Cougs 24-10. Quarterback Devon Williams,
- 0:32Speaker 2: 329 total yards and two of UW's three touchdowns. His
- 0:36Speaker 2: clinching scramble in a juke of two Cougs on a
- 0:38Speaker 2: third and nine with three minutes left in a 17-10
- 0:41Speaker 2: game was the clinching play. Much, much more on the
- 0:44Speaker 2: Apple Cup from the Huskies and the Cougs' perspective coming up.
- 0:48Speaker 2: including Elyse Woodward at 11 o'clock to talk about her
- 0:50Speaker 2: very first play-by-play.
- 0:51Speaker 3: Now that is a Husky I can like.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Maybe the only one for Jessamyn McIntyre, who was on
- 0:57Speaker 2: the opposite sideline last night. This coming weekend, UW hosts
- 1:00Speaker 2: Utah State, which lost at home to Idaho State in
- 1:03Speaker 2: its opener. Washington State is at Kansas State, which won
- 1:07Speaker 2: its opener 71-3.
- 1:10Speaker 3: Yeah, that makes me a little nervous, Greg. I'm not
- 1:13Speaker 3: exactly thrilled about seeing that score. I know who they
- 1:16Speaker 3: were playing.
- 1:17Speaker 2: It was Nichols, FCS Nichols.
- 1:18Speaker 4: Correct, except to put up a 70-burger. That means the,
- 1:23Speaker 4: I mean, at least our defense played well.
- 1:24Speaker 2: You know who went into Manhattan, Kansas last year and
- 1:26Speaker 2: won at Kansas State? The Army team, the Pride and Dream,
- 1:30Speaker 2: I very heart and gray.
- 1:31Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, do you know them?
- 1:33Speaker 2: Very well.
- 1:33Speaker 5: Craig.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Very well. I'm well aware of them, yes. They won
- 1:37Speaker 2: 59-3 this weekend. Also in college football, Big Ten. What
- 1:42Speaker 2: the hell in Ann Arbor? That was just crooked.
- 1:45Speaker 3: Oh, that was unbelievable. Did you watch the.
- 1:49Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Yes.
- 1:50Speaker 2: I saw all of it.
- 1:51Speaker 6: It's crooked.
- 1:52Speaker 4: But when they actually showed the replay booth and they
- 1:55Speaker 4: aired the audio, I did it like 17 times.
- 1:57Speaker 3: That's crooked.
- 1:57Speaker 2: That's crooked. Big Ten officials put an extra second that
- 2:02Speaker 2: didn't exist on an apparently secret play clock no one
- 2:04Speaker 2: knows about. But the Big Ten replay officials knew about it,
- 2:08Speaker 2: and they gave Michigan one extra second, and that allowed
- 2:10Speaker 2: the Michigan Wolverines to score a final play touchdown to
- 2:13Speaker 2: beat Western Michigan 13-12. Blatantly shady result, Ann Arbor. Last night,
- 2:18Speaker 2: Notre Dame smashed Wisconsin at Lambeau Field in Green Bay,
- 2:21Speaker 2: and Mississippi beat Louisville in the end. Seahawks, they got
- 2:24Speaker 2: some issues in their defensive secondary for Wednesday night's NFL
- 2:28Speaker 2: opener against New England at Lumen Field. Signs and what
- 2:31Speaker 2: teammates are saying are pointing to Nicky Manwari not playing.
- 2:33Speaker 2: Of course, he hasn't had a full practice since that
- 2:36Speaker 2: arthroscopic ankle surgery in July. And now, fellow starting safety
- 2:40Speaker 2: Ty Okada has a hamstring injury. He did not practice yesterday.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Seahawks only have three safeties on the 53-man roster, and
- 2:46Speaker 2: two of them are hurt. Julian Love's the only healthy one.
- 2:49Speaker 2: The Anthony Bell just signed to the practice squad this
- 2:51Speaker 2: past weekend. Could be starting with Julian Love on Wednesday.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Then there's the issue who may be the third cornerback
- 2:57Speaker 2: for Mike McDonald, so we can use Devin Witherspoon inside.
- 2:59Speaker 2: We're going to talk about all this coming up. The Mariners,
- 3:03Speaker 2: they lost three of four to the Athletics over the weekend.
- 3:07Speaker 2: I was at the yard Saturday night, and it was bad. Booze, booze,
- 3:12Speaker 2: and more booze. More low IQ baseball.
- 3:15Speaker 3: That's not empathy. It's... It's anger.
- 3:18Speaker 2: It's absurdity.
- 3:19Speaker 4: Yes.
- 3:20Speaker 2: There are six games out with 18 to play. They're
- 3:23Speaker 2: off today, which means they can't lose. They begin a
- 3:25Speaker 2: three-game series at the Yard in Soto against Texas tomorrow.
- 3:28Speaker 2: We'll talk much more about what I saw at the
- 3:30Speaker 2: Yard Saturday night. Not much of it good. Sounders got
- 3:33Speaker 2: three veteran starters back from injury, including Jordan Morris came back,
- 3:38Speaker 2: Christian Roldan came back, and they still didn't score. No
- 3:40Speaker 2: home draw against the New York Red Bulls. That's now
- 3:42Speaker 2: 11 MLS matches in a row without a win. And
- 3:45Speaker 2: in our high school football opener that we feature on Friday, remember?
- 3:48Speaker 2: Two of the top four Class 4A teams in the state.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Lake Stevens held on late to beat Graham Kapows in 31-26. Saturday,
- 3:56Speaker 2: Bellevue won 14-10 at Kennedy Catholic in another showdown of
- 3:59Speaker 2: top powers in the state. Now on with our Labor
- 4:02Speaker 2: Day show. Happy Labor Day! Those of us who are laboring,
- 4:06Speaker 2: happy Labor Day to you as well. I know.
- 4:08Speaker 3: This is so difficult.
- 4:09Speaker 2: The building is empty. The downtown is empty. Of course.
- 4:12Speaker 4: We got shoved into the workplace, and we're the only
- 4:16Speaker 4: people here.
- 4:18Speaker 2: It took me 12 minutes to go from Roosevelt to
- 4:22Speaker 2: iHeartRadio Studios down on Elliott Bay.
- 4:24Speaker 4: I was 18 minutes from Edmonds, so yeah, I got you.
- 4:28Speaker 2: You couldn't have flown here quicker than you could drive
- 4:30Speaker 2: through downtown Seattle today. Greg Bell, Jessamyn McIntyre. We're with
- 4:33Speaker 2: you every weekday, 10 a.m. to noon here on 93.3 KGRFM.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Good morning, ma'am. Fresh off the Washington State Cougars sideline yesterday.
- 4:40Speaker 3: I'm going to call myself fresh right now, but yes.
- 4:43Speaker 2: You are bright and spry. Yeah. How was it? What
- 4:47Speaker 2: was the vibe like in the stadium? Labor Day weekend,
- 4:49Speaker 2: Sunday afternoon, Apple Cup. What was that like?
- 4:51Speaker 3: Yeah, it was different, for sure, especially because it was warm.
- 4:55Speaker 4: So if you're going to call it the Apple Cup,
- 4:57Speaker 4: that was a little bit different. But I would say
- 5:00Speaker 4: that I didn't feel like the.
- 5:01Speaker 3: Fans treated it as such.
- 5:03Speaker 4: It wasn't necessarily the Apple Cup. It was a rivalry, definitely.
- 5:09Speaker 4: And there were more Cougs there than I think were projected.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:12Speaker 3: And I could hear them both.
- 5:14Speaker 4: And I was saying off the air that if you
- 5:18Speaker 4: were standing outside the stadium, you wouldn't be able to
- 5:21Speaker 4: tell who was winning or what play happened by what
- 5:25Speaker 4: team because the fans were extremely loud. So as much
- 5:30Speaker 4: of purple as you saw in the stands, even if
- 5:32Speaker 4: you didn't see that crimson, they were loud and proud.
- 5:35Speaker 2: Yeah, the talk was that the Cougars had to return
- 5:38Speaker 2: their allotment, the athletic department's allotment of tickets that Washington
- 5:41Speaker 2: had given them for the game. And my response to
- 5:44Speaker 2: that was, well, a lot of fans are going to
- 5:46Speaker 2: buy on the secondary market, Coug fans, because they live
- 5:48Speaker 2: in Seattle, in the Seattle area. And they're not necessarily
- 5:50Speaker 2: going to buy it from the Washington State Athletic Department,
- 5:53Speaker 2: although they should. But they didn't. And as to your point,
- 5:57Speaker 2: there was some crimson yesterday.
- 5:58Speaker 4: Yeah. Yes, and a lot of, you know, familiar faces
- 6:02Speaker 4: on the sideline as well. You know, obviously MK, who
- 6:06Speaker 4: is a crazy person, but in the best way.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Explain to the listeners who might know him.
- 6:11Speaker 4: This is MK, who is Chris Abruz, who played for
- 6:16Speaker 4: the Cougs way back when.
- 6:17Speaker 3: He still looks like he would about to get on
- 6:20Speaker 3: the field.
- 6:21Speaker 2: Yes, he does.
- 6:22Speaker 4: Yes.
- 6:23Speaker 3: So he was there and he does.
- 6:25Speaker 4: I mean, everything he's done with his career is absolutely
- 6:28Speaker 4: amazing because obviously he played, but then he ended up,
- 6:33Speaker 4: you know, he has a gym, his own place. He's
- 6:36Speaker 4: a pilot. He flies to games on his own. It's
- 6:40Speaker 4: kind of bonkers to me, but he's the best kind
- 6:43Speaker 4: of crazy, and that's what I mean.
- 6:44Speaker 3: Anyway, yeah, he could jersey up and play on the
- 6:48Speaker 3: defensive line right now.
- 6:49Speaker 2: We're going to talk a lot about the Apple Cup
- 6:51Speaker 2: today because Elyse Woodward is going to join us at
- 6:52Speaker 2: 11 o'clock and tell us what her experience was like
- 6:55Speaker 2: as the first game. It was a full-time voice of
- 6:58Speaker 2: Husky football taking Tony Castricone's place. Tony, of course, left.
- 7:01Speaker 2: to take the Tampa Bay Buccaneers job. So we're going
- 7:03Speaker 2: to talk a lot about the Apple Cup from both
- 7:05Speaker 2: sides of it, from Jessamyn, what she saw from the sideline,
- 7:07Speaker 2: from Washington State's perspective. What happened to... At least what
- 7:11Speaker 2: it was like with working with Dave Softy Mahler. Does
- 7:13Speaker 2: she even need a headset? She could probably hear him
- 7:15Speaker 2: from the sideline. Yeah, exactly.
- 7:17Speaker 4: Yeah, we had some choice words when we were both
- 7:20Speaker 4: going down to the field.
- 7:21Speaker 3: So, yeah, I can't actually say them on radio. So
- 7:25Speaker 3: sorry about that.
- 7:26Speaker 2: I'm nervous for this show because my wife's listening.
- 7:29Speaker 3: Wendy, hi!
- 7:31Speaker 2: Wendy is listening because she's not working today because it's
- 7:34Speaker 2: Labor Day. Mercifully, she doesn't have to work at Children's Hospital.
- 7:37Speaker 3: Same with Mike.
- 7:38Speaker 2: She was in there Saturday, so she did work this weekend. But, yeah,
- 7:42Speaker 2: I'm a little nervous. I'm going to be critiqued by
- 7:44Speaker 2: a speech therapist wife who is going to talk about
- 7:47Speaker 2: my diction.
- 7:48Speaker 3: Get your– oh, hold on.
- 7:51Speaker 4: Because we have something when it comes to that.
- 7:54Speaker 2: We will bring it. No, no, no. This is Jessamyn's creation. Okay.
- 8:04Speaker 2: You can explain.
- 8:05Speaker 4: Well, Greg and I both use big words sometimes because
- 8:08Speaker 4: both of us come from a writing background. Greg still
- 8:11Speaker 4: is a writer. And we use, you know, very big
- 8:14Speaker 4: words sometimes. And I think we need to be called
- 8:17Speaker 4: out for it. So I decided to call us out
- 8:19Speaker 4: for us.
- 8:20Speaker 2: So Jessamyn has created this. What did you say it
- 8:23Speaker 2: was from? It was from Kill Bill, but also Austin Powers.
- 8:26Speaker 7: Austin Powers.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Yes.
- 8:28Speaker 2: Come on.
- 8:29Speaker 4: Okay.
- 8:29Speaker 3: I'm a nerd alert.
- 8:33Speaker 2: Okay, so the deal is if one of us says something,
- 8:36Speaker 2: she'll press that button and now you'll know what that means.
- 8:38Speaker 3: Well, if you use the word like scrappulous or something, yes.
- 8:42Speaker 2: I've never used that one in print or in speaking,
- 8:45Speaker 2: I don't think.
- 8:45Speaker 3: I don't think I have either. It just came to
- 8:47Speaker 3: my brain.
- 8:47Speaker 2: That was a good one.
- 8:48Speaker 3: That was a nerd alert for me.
- 8:50Speaker 2: We're going to talk about the Seahawks because they've got
- 8:52Speaker 2: some issues in the secondary that Mike McDonald and his
- 8:54Speaker 2: defensive coaching staff are trying to work through on how
- 8:58Speaker 2: they're going to employ their defensive backs. Of course, McDonald
- 9:01Speaker 2: loves to play five and six defensive backs more than
- 9:03Speaker 2: anybody in the league. They were in it almost 70%
- 9:05Speaker 2: of the time last year. But that's because they had
- 9:07Speaker 2: Nick Emanwuri who could do safety slash hybrid linebacker slash
- 9:11Speaker 2: end-of-the-line pass rusher with a hand on the ground defensive end.
- 9:15Speaker 2: It doesn't look like they're going to have him. I'll
- 9:17Speaker 2: tell you why I say that. But it doesn't look
- 9:20Speaker 2: like Emanwuri is going to play Wednesday night based on
- 9:22Speaker 2: what I've seen and heard over the weekend at the
- 9:24Speaker 2: practices in Renton. And now Ty Okada... it's a hamstring issue.
- 9:30Speaker 2: And Jessamyn, he was healthy and practicing full go through
- 9:34Speaker 2: the end of the preseason, which tells me he's gotten
- 9:36Speaker 2: a hamstring injury recently, like in the last week.
- 9:39Speaker 3: Or a recurring situation.
- 9:42Speaker 2: Could be, although I had no evidence during the preseason
- 9:44Speaker 2: to say he was injured at all. He was not
- 9:46Speaker 2: limited at anything that I've seen through August. If it's
- 9:49Speaker 2: a newer hamstring injury, that doesn't pretend well to him
- 9:52Speaker 2: playing on Wednesday night. And I mean, hamstrings just don't
- 9:57Speaker 2: go away. You don't wake up one day and suddenly
- 9:59Speaker 2: it's fine. yeah so the fact that he didn't practice
- 10:02Speaker 2: yesterday the biggest fullest last full day before the game
- 10:07Speaker 2: today they're in a lighter mode I doesn't sound great
- 10:11Speaker 2: now the CR the practice the NFL practice participation report
- 10:14Speaker 2: scheduled for this game in particular this one-off special Wednesday
- 10:17Speaker 2: game is a little different And that the Seahawks will
- 10:20Speaker 2: not have to. Yesterday was the first time they had
- 10:22Speaker 2: to report. Saturday, when they practiced, they did not, which
- 10:25Speaker 2: is why Mike McDonald came into his press conference and said,
- 10:27Speaker 2: I'm not talking about injuries. I even said, asked him
- 10:29Speaker 2: on Saturday, well, can you characterize how Nick Imanwari has
- 10:32Speaker 2: progressed in his recovery from the start of training camp
- 10:35Speaker 2: to now? And he said, no, not really. I can't
- 10:38Speaker 2: do that. But then Imanwari has since been limited. He
- 10:42Speaker 2: has not practiced fully yet. So we're going to talk
- 10:45Speaker 2: about the ramifications of that and how McDonald likes to
- 10:47Speaker 2: play defense is going to have to change. And it
- 10:49Speaker 2: could include an extra linebacker on the field, as in
- 10:52Speaker 2: three off-ball linebackers, in addition to Derek Hall and Demarcus
- 10:56Speaker 2: Lawrence rushing a passer. That would be different. That's not
- 10:59Speaker 2: how McDonald played it last year. He played it with
- 11:00Speaker 2: more defensive backs in lieu of a third linebacker. He
- 11:04Speaker 2: would have two linebackers on the field. I don't think
- 11:05Speaker 2: that's going to happen as much on Wednesday night. I
- 11:08Speaker 2: also don't think it's going to matter. We'll talk about that, too.
- 11:13Speaker 2: Lots to talk about, including Factor Fiction. You know the
- 11:15Speaker 2: return of Factor Fiction.
- 11:17Speaker 3: It's back, baby.
- 11:18Speaker 2: Actually, I think the reason we work on Labor Day
- 11:21Speaker 2: is because of Factor Fiction.
- 11:23Speaker 4: You know, we used to do it on the Tuesday
- 11:26Speaker 4: following Labor Day, but the people wanted and they deserve.
- 11:31Speaker 2: So, Factor Fiction is presented by Lucky Eagle Casino Resort.
- 11:35Speaker 2: How it works is, at 7.35 every morning... 11.35 every
- 11:40Speaker 2: weekday morning, 2.35 in the afternoon, and 3.35. We make
- 11:43Speaker 2: a pick based on the upcoming college or pro game
- 11:45Speaker 2: schedule for the week. It's either against the spread or
- 11:49Speaker 2: the total over and under, the total number of points,
- 11:52Speaker 2: either or. We make a pick at those times. You
- 11:55Speaker 2: text into our Tacoma Dodge text line 49451, and you
- 11:58Speaker 2: text in fact, as in you think what I or
- 12:00Speaker 2: Jessamyn just said as a prediction will happen. And if
- 12:05Speaker 2: you think we're full of beans, then it's fiction. You
- 12:08Speaker 2: text that to 49451. That's it. If you don't know
- 12:10Speaker 2: how to spell fiction, you can't enter the contest.
- 12:13Speaker 3: But you have to do it in that window.
- 12:15Speaker 2: And what happens is you enter, and if you win,
- 12:19Speaker 2: anyone who texts the correct answer that actually plays out
- 12:22Speaker 2: will be eligible to win $ 1, 000. One weekly winner will
- 12:25Speaker 2: be announced from all eligible entries. The more you play
- 12:28Speaker 2: each week, of course, the more odds chance of winning.
- 12:31Speaker 2: So if you listen and you can guess against or
- 12:33Speaker 2: with us, The more chances you do that, the more
- 12:35Speaker 2: chances you have to win $ 1, 000. And then at the
- 12:37Speaker 2: end of the contest, which ends on December 11th, which
- 12:40Speaker 2: I'm not mistaken is the day before the Army-Navy game.
- 12:42Speaker 4: It is?
- 12:43Speaker 2: That's the show. It's December 11th that Jessamyn and I
- 12:45Speaker 2: will be doing from Times Square in New York.
- 12:47Speaker 3: So we'll have one more shot for you.
- 12:48Speaker 2: Exactly. Yeah. And take a wild guess what that pick's
- 12:51Speaker 2: going to be, unless some Chuck or Ian or.
- 12:54Speaker 3: They would not do that to you.
- 12:55Speaker 2: No, I hope not.
- 12:56Speaker 4: No, they would do that just to, like, grab you,
- 13:00Speaker 4: rip you.
- 13:01Speaker 3: Yeah, but no.
- 13:02Speaker 2: Let's hope they don't do that. At the end of
- 13:04Speaker 2: the contest, the person who has the most correct guesses
- 13:06Speaker 2: across the entire season, meaning from today through December 11th,
- 13:10Speaker 2: will win $.
- 13:12Speaker 8: 10, 000.
- 13:12Speaker 2: Ten large, thanks to Lucky Eagle Casino Resort. Play, stay,
- 13:16Speaker 2: win the day. We'll do that at 1130. I don't
- 13:20Speaker 2: even listen to what... I was on with Chuck at 7,
- 13:22Speaker 2: and then I turned it off and didn't hear what
- 13:23Speaker 2: his pick at 735 was.
- 13:25Speaker 3: Oh, it'll be in the sheet. It'll be in the spreadsheet.
- 13:27Speaker 2: A reminder, if you're not going to the season opener Wednesday,
- 13:31Speaker 2: the sold-out season opener after the Vinod Khosla... Ownership group
- 13:35Speaker 2: is introduced in the morning at Lumen Field. The next

- 14:18Speaker 4: just want to go for a fun time and an
- 14:21Speaker 4: entertaining game definitely.
- 14:22Speaker 2: Go 11 35 of course factor fiction 11 30 we'll
- 14:26Speaker 2: wedge around your talkbacks and the text on the tucumar
- 14:28Speaker 2: dodge text line 49451 That's when you always get a
- 14:31Speaker 2: chance to be a part of the show every day.
- 14:33Speaker 2: The Apple Cup, man, really not smart plays by the Huskies.
- 14:36Speaker 2: Really not. Targeting into the quarterback's helmet when Pinnock was running,
- 14:39Speaker 2: he lost a fumble along the sidelines, and then the
- 14:42Speaker 2: DB just bashes him head-to-head in the helmet. That negated
- 14:45Speaker 2: a turnover the Huskies would have had. Standing over a Coug,
- 14:48Speaker 2: Eddie tackled him, an unsportsmanlike taunting penalty after the Huskies
- 14:52Speaker 2: had stopped the Cougs on a third down in the
- 14:54Speaker 2: second half. Running a dive play by the fullback... The
- 14:58Speaker 2: end of the first half, Jessamyn, we're used to having
- 15:00Speaker 2: flashbacks to Lumen Field two years ago when they were
- 15:03Speaker 2: at the goal line to end the game. And I thought, well,
- 15:05Speaker 2: one play Jed Fish is not going to call is
- 15:07Speaker 2: a read option play because the Cougs famously stopped that
- 15:11Speaker 2: to win the game two years ago here in Seattle.
- 15:13Speaker 3: Oh, I certainly remember.
- 15:14Speaker 2: So he does the opposite. Jed Fish called a fullback dive.
- 15:18Speaker 2: I mean, probably the least athletic play they could have
- 15:24Speaker 2: decided to play there. Don't get speed on the edge.
- 15:27Speaker 4: I hate giving him a little bit of credit, but
- 15:30Speaker 4: also one of the most unexpected.
- 15:32Speaker 2: True. It was so obvious it was unexpected. Let's run
- 15:35Speaker 2: a dive play on the goal line. The last play
- 15:38Speaker 2: of the first half, he calls timeout with three seconds left.
- 15:42Speaker 2: It's a 10-0 game at that point. And if they
- 15:44Speaker 2: score a touchdown there, the game's over. A three-score game
- 15:47Speaker 2: going into the second half, it's likely over. And he
- 15:50Speaker 2: runs a die play to the fullback right at the middle.
- 15:52Speaker 2: And the Cougs stop it with a really nice defensive stand.
- 15:55Speaker 2: I was watching it from the Seahawks headquarters during the
- 15:57Speaker 2: practice yesterday in the media availability. I didn't get the number.
- 16:01Speaker 2: It was someone flying in off the left edge who
- 16:03Speaker 2: came in and just shut the plate I think he
- 16:05Speaker 2: was 21 if I'm.
- 16:06Speaker 3: Not mistaken yeah Keith Brown.
- 16:08Speaker 2: Thank you let's give Keith Brown his flowers.
- 16:10Speaker 4: And he was injured all last year he was just
- 16:12Speaker 4: chomping at the bit I mean he was on the
- 16:15Speaker 4: sideline every single year and throughout my time I've noticed
- 16:18Speaker 4: that injured athletes learn so much by just having to watch,
- 16:23Speaker 4: and they can't be out there.
- 16:24Speaker 3: I was so excited. He was such a leader on
- 16:27Speaker 3: that team.
- 16:28Speaker 4: Sorry to get on a little bit of a crimson
- 16:30Speaker 4: and gray soapbox, but during the first quarter, he was
- 16:35Speaker 4: rallying the defense.
- 16:37Speaker 3: He stood on a chair.
- 16:38Speaker 4: He did not play a snap last year, and I
- 16:41Speaker 4: saw him in a sling out at every single game,
- 16:44Speaker 4: and he was just out there.
- 16:47Speaker 3: He was out there, and he was.
- 16:50Speaker 4: An unexpected leader, I would say, just because he didn't
- 16:54Speaker 4: play last year. So anyway, yes, he was all over
- 16:57Speaker 4: the field. He had a monster sack, too. He really,
- 17:00Speaker 4: I don't know. No, it wasn't a sack. It was
- 17:03Speaker 4: tackling the running back in the backfield. Anyway, it was
- 17:06Speaker 4: just like, I went audibly, oof, you know, when I
- 17:12Speaker 4: saw some of those tackles. Anyway, yes, 21 is Keith Brown.
- 17:15Speaker 2: Welcome back. Good for him, Heath Brown. I'm glad you
- 17:18Speaker 2: identified him for us.
- 17:19Speaker 3: Thank you. You're welcome.
- 17:21Speaker 2: I thought the Cougs should have gone for the– instead
- 17:23Speaker 2: of the kick and make it 17-10. I didn't know
- 17:25Speaker 2: how many more times you could expect the Cougs to
- 17:27Speaker 2: be down in touchdown zone there with seven minutes left.
- 17:30Speaker 2: But the new head coach in his first game decided
- 17:32Speaker 2: to kick the field goal, which is the percentage play
- 17:34Speaker 2: on fourth and four.
- 17:35Speaker 4: Well, and Jack Stevens has been very, very successful as
- 17:39Speaker 4: a kicker.
- 17:40Speaker 2: Unfortunately for the Cougs, the veteran kicker missed his first
- 17:42Speaker 2: two kicks, 52, and then.
- 17:43Speaker 3: The shorter one. Well, technically he made.
- 17:45Speaker 2: It before the penalty. That was also a killer play
- 17:48Speaker 2: for the Cougs. That sucked.
- 17:49Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 17:49Speaker 2: He could have had a one-score game there in the
- 17:52Speaker 2: third quarter. I think it was third quarter. A 10-3
- 17:55Speaker 2: game if he had made it. The kick had counted,
- 17:56Speaker 2: but there was a delay of game penalty that negated it.
- 17:58Speaker 2: Then he missed the re-kick from five yards further back.
- 18:00Speaker 2: Another point in the game that the Cougs could have
- 18:03Speaker 2: gotten within one score. Anyway, Washington wins 24-10. I was
- 18:09Speaker 2: at the yard Saturday night with my wife and our son,
- 18:11Speaker 2: and man, the home nine got booed, and they deserved it.
- 18:16Speaker 2: Another foul behind 6-0 to the A's and only had
- 18:19Speaker 2: two hits through eight innings Saturday night, both by Kyle Raleigh.
- 18:23Speaker 2: You know, it's really indicative of the season, Jessamyn, that
- 18:25Speaker 2: we looked up at the scoreboard and showed Kyle Raleigh hitting. 180,
- 18:29Speaker 2: and we're like, wow, he's really brought up his average
- 18:31Speaker 2: lately to. 180. I mean, he did, though. Yes, he did.
- 18:37Speaker 3: No, I get it. I get what you're saying.
- 18:38Speaker 2: Three at night Saturday. Yeah, three at night.
- 18:40Speaker 3: Especially with the expectations put on him.
- 18:43Speaker 2: From 60 home runs to 180. More low baseball IQ plays.
- 18:47Speaker 2: And again, it was Julio Rodriguez. Mariners down 4-0 Saturday.
- 18:52Speaker 2: He has a 3-0 count. So what's your job there?
- 18:55Speaker 2: It's an easy baseball rule. Get on base. All the
- 18:58Speaker 2: Mariners need are to collect base runners to try to
- 19:00Speaker 2: get back in the game, right? A home run's not
- 19:03Speaker 2: going to get you back in the game. A home
- 19:04Speaker 2: run is 4-1. So, yeah, I can see if a
- 19:07Speaker 2: home run puts you in the game or can tie
- 19:08Speaker 2: it or get you close. It's 4-0. You need to
- 19:11Speaker 2: get on base. And 3-0, you should be taking. You
- 19:14Speaker 2: shouldn't need a take sign. High school players know this.
- 19:18Speaker 2: 3-0 down four runs, you take. What's he do? He
- 19:22Speaker 2: goes leaning over the plate and chases a pitch that
- 19:24Speaker 2: wasn't even a cookie on 3-0 because this guy was
- 19:27Speaker 2: throwing slop. He was throwing 80-mile-an-hour change-ups most of the night.
- 19:32Speaker 2: That guy for the A's Saturday night was 3-13 with
- 19:35Speaker 2: an ERA near 7. He was the worst starting pitcher
- 19:38Speaker 2: in the American League, full-time starter. And the Mariners got
- 19:42Speaker 2: two hits off of him in eight innings. And part
- 19:45Speaker 2: of the reason is for stuff like this. 3-0 down
- 19:48Speaker 2: four runs. Julio Rodriguez should not be swimming. He leans
- 19:50Speaker 2: over the plate. He weakly rolls it over to third base.
- 19:53Speaker 2: And the inning ends instead of a base runner with
- 19:55Speaker 2: an out.
- 19:55Speaker 3: That was an unimpressive at bat.
- 19:58Speaker 2: I was sitting there behind section 137, behind third base,
- 20:01Speaker 2: just going, what is going on here? Does anyone have
- 20:04Speaker 2: any accountability or direction or any baseball sense at all?
- 20:09Speaker 2: He should have been benched for that. Sit down. You're
- 20:11Speaker 2: swinging 3-0 down, 4-0, sit down. Then.
- 20:15Speaker 3: Is he giving directions?
- 20:16Speaker 2: He doesn't need to be.
- 20:17Speaker 3: Oh, you're right.
- 20:18Speaker 2: There's no way a Major League Baseball player should not
- 20:20Speaker 2: know that you don't take down for nothing.
- 20:22Speaker 4: Let's take Julio into account.
- 20:24Speaker 9: Yes.
- 20:25Speaker 3: Is he paying attention?
- 20:26Speaker 4: No. Right.
- 20:28Speaker 2: He's checked out.
- 20:29Speaker 3: We've seen several examples.
- 20:30Speaker 2: Yes.
- 20:31Speaker 3: Of him not paying attention.
- 20:33Speaker 2: Throwing live balls into the stands.
- 20:35Speaker 3: So maybe he needs some direction.
- 20:37Speaker 2: Maybe his direction he needs is to the bench and
- 20:39Speaker 2: just sit there and watch for a while.
- 20:41Speaker 4: Like I just said about injured players, I've watched them
- 20:43Speaker 4: come back smarter. And I'm not saying I want him
- 20:46Speaker 4: to be injured. But if you are forced to sit,
- 20:50Speaker 4: you learn a lot.
- 20:50Speaker 2: And you also sit and go, oh, why am I sitting?
- 20:52Speaker 2: Because I swing 3-0 down 4-0. Then runner at first,
- 20:54Speaker 2: one out. No, two out. Nobody out. Runner at first,
- 21:01Speaker 2: nobody out. Josh Naylor hits a screamer on one hop
- 21:06Speaker 2: to the second baseman. A really hard shot. The second baseman,
- 21:10Speaker 2: it's too hard. He bobbles it and then he kicks it.
- 21:12Speaker 2: It rolls away. And then he just underhand tosses at
- 21:16Speaker 2: the second base for the force out. The shortstop's about
- 21:19Speaker 2: to throw it back to the pitcher. But he looks
- 21:22Speaker 2: up and sees Naylor's not even halfway down the line.
- 21:24Speaker 2: And this was like... It took much longer than what
- 21:28Speaker 2: I just took to describe it. And Naylor's not even
- 21:30Speaker 2: halfway down the line. In the shortstop, you could see
- 21:32Speaker 2: his body language go, oh. And he throws it to
- 21:35Speaker 2: first base for an easy double play. On a ball,
- 21:39Speaker 2: Naylor should have been on the right field foul pole
- 21:41Speaker 2: had he been running even a little bit. That's when
- 21:44Speaker 2: the boos were the loudest Saturday night, when Naylor did
- 21:46Speaker 2: not run out that ball.
- 21:47Speaker 3: The boos, that's tough.
- 21:49Speaker 2: Naylor should have been sitting next to Rodriguez.
- 21:52Speaker 3: People love this team. And when they start booing.
- 21:55Speaker 4: You know that we have a pretty empathetic crowd, I
- 21:58Speaker 4: would say, around here.
- 22:00Speaker 8: Right.
- 22:00Speaker 2: And there were 40,000 people in the yard because it
- 22:03Speaker 2: was Brian Wu bobblehead night. And they were booing. And
- 22:07Speaker 2: we all saw it. And people around us in Section
- 22:09Speaker 2: 137 were like.
- 22:10Speaker 3: What the?
- 22:12Speaker 2: We couldn't believe it. Because it took like 10 seconds
- 22:15Speaker 2: for that play to elapse. And he didn't get close
- 22:16Speaker 2: to first base. That was just didn't try.
- 22:20Speaker 4: Poor.
- 22:20Speaker 2: He should have been sitting next to Julio Rodriguez on
- 22:22Speaker 2: the same bench. I thought at that moment, Jessamyn, when
- 22:26Speaker 2: Naver didn't run it out, they're trying to get Wilson fired.
- 22:30Speaker 3: Oh, gosh, that would be a weird mutiny.
- 22:32Speaker 2: That's what I thought. I thought they are playing like
- 22:36Speaker 2: they want to get Wilson fired. And then you look
- 22:38Speaker 2: in the dugout when you go to a game, and
- 22:41Speaker 2: you probably see it on television, Dan Wilson's body language
- 22:44Speaker 2: standing on the top rail, he does not want to
- 22:47Speaker 2: be there.
- 22:48Speaker 3: I think that this season has exhausted him.
- 22:51Speaker 2: It has. And they don't need to fire him. He's
- 22:53Speaker 2: going to quit. He's too much of a man to
- 22:56Speaker 2: quit during the season.
- 22:57Speaker 3: He would never do that.
- 22:57Speaker 4: No.
- 22:58Speaker 2: And he's got a commitment.
- 22:58Speaker 3: Because he comes from a player commitment background. Exactly.
- 23:01Speaker 2: He's going to commit through the season he's committed to.
- 23:03Speaker 2: And then he's going to go in to Hollander and
- 23:05Speaker 2: John Stanton after the season and say, all right, I
- 23:08Speaker 2: did what you asked me to do. Never had experience
- 23:09Speaker 2: doing this. I took over the job for service. I
- 23:11Speaker 2: did what you asked. I'm done. I got guys that
- 23:14Speaker 2: don't run out ground balls. I got guys that swing
- 23:16Speaker 2: 3-0 down 4-0. I got guys that throw balls in
- 23:19Speaker 2: the stands when there's one out. I'm done. They don't
- 23:22Speaker 2: need to fire him. He's going to quit. They are
- 23:25Speaker 2: playing like they even want Jerry DiPoto fired.
- 23:27Speaker 4: He will respectfully resign.
- 23:29Speaker 2: Yeah. He'll just say, I'm done.
- 23:31Speaker 3: And get an admin position.
- 23:32Speaker 2: I'll go back to my wife in retirement.
- 23:35Speaker 3: He was really living the life.
- 23:37Speaker 2: He was. Yes. He's not now.
- 23:39Speaker 4: Well.
- 23:39Speaker 2: 4-9-4-5. I think he just.
- 23:41Speaker 3: Okay. This is the.
- 23:43Speaker 4: The weird empathetic part of me because I'm a jerk
- 23:47Speaker 4: when it comes to sunshine. No, I just, I don't
- 23:51Speaker 4: necessarily speak for every fan, but I would just say
- 23:54Speaker 4: that Dan is a.
- 23:57Speaker 3: Very good person.
- 23:58Speaker 4: And I think he cares so much about not just
- 24:02Speaker 4: the team and their success, but he cares about each
- 24:05Speaker 4: person in that clubhouse.
- 24:07Speaker 3: And Dan, Maybe that's to a fault at some point.
- 24:11Speaker 4: I was told that's my greatest strength and my greatest
- 24:13Speaker 4: weakness is I care too much.
- 24:17Speaker 2: I don't know why Dan Wilson would spend another day
- 24:19Speaker 2: past the end of this season with the Mariners. I don't.
- 24:21Speaker 2: I would be like, I did my job. I've done
- 24:24Speaker 2: what you asked me to do. I'm out. I mean,
- 24:27Speaker 2: it's unbelievable. The stuff I see on a daily basis,
- 24:30Speaker 2: this team is, not only is this the most disappointing
- 24:33Speaker 2: season in Mariners history, given the expectations, but It might
- 24:36Speaker 2: be the most poorly played. Even when they have 100
- 24:38Speaker 2: lost seasons, those are usually with kids that are trying
- 24:41Speaker 2: and they're over their heads. These are veteran players making $ 80, $ 90,
- 24:46Speaker 2: and $ 200 million in the case of their center fielder
- 24:48Speaker 2: doing this. Those dudes need to sit. And Michael Arroyo,
- 24:52Speaker 2: now that he's caught up, put him in there. Montes,
- 24:55Speaker 2: put him in there. I don't care. Give him no handedness,
- 24:58Speaker 2: none of that. Play him. Play the kids. Let the
- 25:00Speaker 2: guys who don't run out double play balls, let the
- 25:03Speaker 2: guys who swing 3-0 sit. Four, nine, four, five, one.
- 25:07Speaker 2: It's coming out to text line. You agree or disagree.
- 25:10Speaker 3: You want him to be more decisive.
- 25:12Speaker 2: And accountable for what he does. There's no accountability because
- 25:16Speaker 2: there's no leadership on this team. We're watching, again, the
- 25:19Speaker 2: 2026 Mariners as a perfect example of athletic talent lacking leadership.
- 25:23Speaker 2: And that starts from the very top. Up next, let's
- 25:26Speaker 2: talk to a team about a team that has leadership.
- 25:29Speaker 2: the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks, but they aren't without issues.
- 25:32Speaker 2: They've got some issues in the secondary, and Mike McDonald
- 25:34Speaker 2: might not be able to play defense in the season
- 25:36Speaker 2: opener Wednesday against the Patriots like he wants to. That's next.
- 25:39Speaker 2: The fact or fiction, your chance to match which with
- 25:41Speaker 2: us and our college and pro picks. I'll just give
- 25:43Speaker 2: you a hint. It's college. And those of you who
- 25:45Speaker 2: know me know where we're going. We'll do that at 11.35.
- 25:47Speaker 2: If you listen, you know.
- 25:48Speaker 3: Exactly what it's going to be. But don't text.
- 25:50Speaker 2: In before Greg gets his pick.
- 25:52Speaker 3: 11.35.
- 25:52Speaker 2: You know what I'm going to say, but just be ready.
- 25:55Speaker 2: That's coming up on 93.3 KJRFM. You know one of
- 26:16Speaker 2: the great mysteries of this station and this network?
- 26:20Speaker 3: Oh, there are several. I don't know how many we
- 26:22Speaker 3: can say.
- 26:23Speaker 2: One of the great mysteries is the friendship between Dick
- 26:26Speaker 2: Fane and Jalela in Atlanta.
- 26:31Speaker 3: Let's not get presumptuous over here, okay?
- 26:33Speaker 2: I'm just wondering, how did that occur? How did they
- 26:36Speaker 2: become friends?
- 26:36Speaker 3: I have friends all over the country.
- 26:37Speaker 2: How do they stay friends? How is he intimately knowing
- 26:41Speaker 2: all of her backgrounds?
- 26:43Speaker 3: And maybe they're friends.
- 26:44Speaker 2: That just makes me laugh every time I hear it.
- 26:45Speaker 4: Well, I mean, okay, as someone who has friends that
- 26:48Speaker 4: live literally in almost every state of this country, I
- 26:52Speaker 4: can say that I would speak the same way about them.
- 26:56Speaker 2: He's just reading a script.
- 26:59Speaker 3: I don't think so.
- 27:01Speaker 4: I think they might intimately know each other, but not intimately.
- 27:04Speaker 3: I mean, I think they might be friends.
- 27:07Speaker 2: It just makes me laugh every time. Well, it's not
- 27:09Speaker 2: making Mike McDonald laugh down in Renton. I was there
- 27:12Speaker 2: all weekend, and his cornerback and safety situation, two positions
- 27:16Speaker 2: that he just outmaneuvers offenses and just out schemes them
- 27:21Speaker 2: by those positions, thanks to Nicky Manwari and Devin Witherspoon. Well,
- 27:25Speaker 2: those positions are in some flux, and he's going to
- 27:28Speaker 2: have to be creative on Wednesday night to be able
- 27:30Speaker 2: to play defense the way he wants to. Let's just
- 27:32Speaker 2: state off the top, if Nicky Manwari doesn't play, and
- 27:34Speaker 2: it looks like he's not going to, Ernest Jones yesterday
- 27:38Speaker 2: was talking about him. Somebody asked him what Neiman Ward
- 27:41Speaker 2: brings to defense. And he said, he's like an alien
- 27:44Speaker 2: when he comes back. Until then, until then, until then,
- 27:50Speaker 2: we're going to play with the guys that are here.
- 27:52Speaker 2: So he pretty much told you that Nick Neiman Ward
- 27:55Speaker 2: is not going to play.
- 27:56Speaker 3: Or he was covering.
- 27:58Speaker 9: Maybe.
- 27:59Speaker 2: It sure sounded. And then it looked like he's not
- 28:01Speaker 2: going to play all weekend. limited in practice yesterday. He's
- 28:05Speaker 2: yet to have a full practice since the mid-July arthroscopic
- 28:08Speaker 2: surgery on his ankle, which suggests he's not going to
- 28:11Speaker 2: play week one. So what do they do? Well, again,
- 28:15Speaker 2: nobody in the NFL played more sub packages of five
- 28:17Speaker 2: and six defensive backs last year than Mike McDonald. And voila,
- 28:20Speaker 2: they led the NFL in fewest points allowed and they
- 28:23Speaker 2: won the Super Bowl. Is he going to be able
- 28:25Speaker 2: to do that Wednesday night against the Patriots? Well, to
- 28:27Speaker 2: do it, Part of the time, you go three safeties, right? Well,
- 28:31Speaker 2: they only have three on the active roster, and two
- 28:32Speaker 2: of them are hurt. Tai Okada didn't practice yesterday either
- 28:35Speaker 2: with a hamstring issue, and you don't just suddenly get
- 28:37Speaker 2: a hamstring issue and suddenly get healed from those. Those
- 28:39Speaker 2: tend to take a while. The fact he wasn't on
- 28:42Speaker 2: the field in the final full practice of the week,
- 28:44Speaker 2: the fullest full practice of the week, three days, two
- 28:47Speaker 2: days before the game, three days before the game, suggests
- 28:49Speaker 2: he's not going to play either. That leaves Julian Love
- 28:51Speaker 2: as the only healthy safety. Perhaps the Anthony Bell, who
- 28:55Speaker 2: they just signed this weekend back after they cut him
- 28:59Speaker 2: the previous week, I did some digging on Bell, and
- 29:02Speaker 2: he was shopping. He was trying to get a job
- 29:04Speaker 2: on another team's 53. I talked to his agent, and
- 29:07Speaker 2: he said that they were leaving open the possibility of
- 29:09Speaker 2: coming back to the Seahawks practice squad, but that they
- 29:11Speaker 2: wanted to, obviously, at his position, he's been in the
- 29:14Speaker 2: league now five, six years, he wanted a 53-man spot
- 29:16Speaker 2: on another team, and none materialized. So this weekend, he
- 29:20Speaker 2: was signed back to the Seahawks, and presto, he might
- 29:22Speaker 2: be right in the starting lineup in the NFL opener
- 29:25Speaker 2: because of these injuries to Okada and And Eamon Worre,
- 29:28Speaker 2: they also have on the practice squad Maxon Hook, who
- 29:30Speaker 2: played a very good preseason in training camp, the second
- 29:34Speaker 2: year veteran from Toledo. They also have, well, they think
- 29:39Speaker 2: they have A.J.
- 29:39Speaker 7: Finch.
- 29:40Speaker 2: But now he may be banged up too the guy
- 29:42Speaker 2: who they've had around for a couple years now and
- 29:44Speaker 2: who came back from reconstructive knee surgery or in early
- 29:47Speaker 2: august and was a standout early in camp he's on
- 29:49Speaker 2: the practice squad as well whom they don't have of
- 29:52Speaker 2: course and who would it be the instant plug-in for
- 29:54Speaker 2: even worry would be bud clark The rookie's second-round pick
- 29:57Speaker 2: is out for the season with that broken ankle he
- 29:59Speaker 2: got in the second preseason game at Tennessee.
- 30:02Speaker 3: That was a heartbreaker.
- 30:04Speaker 2: Right. So, the bottom line is if they don't have
- 30:06Speaker 2: a human warrior in the middle of the field, they
- 30:08Speaker 2: want to have Devin Witherspoon in the middle of the field,
- 30:10Speaker 2: move him into nickel. Well, you need a third cornerback
- 30:12Speaker 2: that can play outside to do that, so they can
- 30:14Speaker 2: move Witherspoon into nickel. McDonald would much rather blitz Witherspoon
- 30:18Speaker 2: from inside and affect more of the game and affect
- 30:20Speaker 2: the Patriots' run game from nickel than outside corner. But
- 30:24Speaker 2: if he doesn't have a trusted third corner, he's kind
- 30:26Speaker 2: of hamstrung to do that. He's probably hands are tied
- 30:32Speaker 2: in doing that. So what do they do? Is Trevon
- 30:36Speaker 2: Diggs ready? Well, yesterday I asked Adam Dirty, the defensive coordinator,
- 30:39Speaker 2: and he said Diggs is good on scheme. And he
- 30:42Speaker 2: spun up enough that he could play on scheme. And
- 30:45Speaker 2: then Brady Henderson of ESPN.com asked him, well, what about
- 30:47Speaker 2: his legs under him? He hasn't practiced fully only one
- 30:50Speaker 2: week since January because he didn't sign until the last
- 30:53Speaker 2: week of the preseason after the Green Bay Packers had
- 30:56Speaker 2: cut him in January. And Dirty indicated that he's getting
- 31:00Speaker 2: there too. Now, we heard on the Hard Knocks episode
- 31:02Speaker 2: last week, the final episode, that Diggs said he thought
- 31:05Speaker 2: he would need a couple weeks to be spun up
- 31:08Speaker 2: on game plan and his legs under him to be
- 31:09Speaker 2: able to play, which to me was why they put
- 31:11Speaker 2: him on the practice squad to begin the season rather
- 31:13Speaker 2: than the 53. But the way they are in the secondary,
- 31:16Speaker 2: I'd be very surprised if they don't elevate Trevon Diggs
- 31:20Speaker 2: from the practice squad to the active roster for the
- 31:22Speaker 2: game on Wednesday. Same with DeAnthony Bell. I'm expecting those
- 31:25Speaker 2: to be the elevations for the game on Wednesday. And
- 31:29Speaker 2: if they don't do that with Diggs at the third corner,
- 31:33Speaker 2: if they don't think he's quite ready yet, Nehemiah Pritchett
- 31:36Speaker 2: is the most obvious one. He's on the 53 currently.
- 31:39Speaker 2: And that's the one who started training camp as the
- 31:41Speaker 2: third corner moving Witherspoon inside. But then McDonald didn't like
- 31:44Speaker 2: him enough that he started going to Noah Higmanogany in
- 31:46Speaker 2: that role. And they didn't like Higmanogany enough that they
- 31:48Speaker 2: cut him. He's now with the Cleveland Browns. So the
- 31:52Speaker 2: quest for a third cornerback continues. Is Diggs ready or not?
- 31:56Speaker 2: If he's not ready, they go back to the fallback,
- 31:58Speaker 2: the original plan, Nehemiah Pritchett, who, if he had succeeded,
- 32:01Speaker 2: they wouldn't have gotten into Diggs and wouldn't have signed
- 32:03Speaker 2: Terry on Arnold and gone down that rabbit hole at all.
- 32:06Speaker 2: You see what McDonald's dealing with here. So here's an
- 32:09Speaker 2: escape hatch plan. Don't play the extra defensive back. Now,
- 32:14Speaker 2: they don't want to do that because they'd rather have
- 32:16Speaker 2: Witherspoon in the middle, but if they can't, they don't
- 32:18Speaker 2: think they can trust Pritchett to do that or they
- 32:20Speaker 2: don't think Diggs is ready. They could go three-off ball linebackers.
- 32:24Speaker 2: They'd have Tyrese Knight. I've seen him practice it a
- 32:26Speaker 2: lot in training camp. Tyrese Knight and Drake Thomas, the
- 32:30Speaker 2: starter Thomas last year, took Knight's job as inside weak
- 32:32Speaker 2: side linebacker, but have both of those guys on the
- 32:34Speaker 2: field at the same time flanking Ernest Jones. That would
- 32:38Speaker 2: be a good run-stopping defense if the Patriots were trying
- 32:41Speaker 2: to counter an extra defensive back by running the ball
- 32:43Speaker 2: with Stevenson and those guys. But it might not help
- 32:46Speaker 2: in pass defense as much. I talked to Tyrese Knight yesterday,
- 32:51Speaker 2: and this is what he had to say about his
- 32:53Speaker 2: new role, which he thinks is not all that different
- 32:55Speaker 2: for him. The three linebackers, it'll get you on the field, obviously,
- 32:59Speaker 2: but you're doing it more in training camp. What's different?
- 33:01Speaker 2: What do you like about that?
- 33:03Speaker 10: I mean, it's not really no difference to me. It's
- 33:05Speaker 10: just like down a little bit to the field more,
- 33:07Speaker 10: so more of.
- 33:08Speaker 2: A passing strength.
- 33:08Speaker 6: But to me, it's really no different.
- 33:10Speaker 2: It's a lot of everything the same. So it doesn't
- 33:12Speaker 2: really change when you were weak side inside?
- 33:14Speaker 10: No, it's just to the field more than to the boundaries.
- 33:18Speaker 2: How has this gone for you since the end of
- 33:20Speaker 2: last season and the camp you had and you showed out? Man,
- 33:24Speaker 2: I mean, it's been a real blessing.
- 33:26Speaker 10: I just came back healthy and I just feel like
- 33:28Speaker 10: I've been playing the ball that I know I've been
- 33:30Speaker 10: playing my whole life. This year, everything just seemed more clear,
- 33:33Speaker 10: just slower, just faster for me. So I think that
- 33:36Speaker 10: just showed the type of growth I had, the type
- 33:37Speaker 10: of training camp I had, including that first piece of
- 33:40Speaker 10: the game.
- 33:41Speaker 2: And it must help that you're in the same scheme
- 33:43Speaker 2: now for about three years, right?
- 33:45Speaker 6: The same coach who knows you.
- 33:46Speaker 10: Yeah, you know, going into year three with the same
- 33:48Speaker 10: defense and everything just started blending.
- 33:50Speaker 6: In way more.
- 33:51Speaker 10: I think it just helps me with everything. As long
- 33:53Speaker 10: as I learn nothing new, I just got to continue
- 33:54Speaker 10: to focus on the basics.
- 33:56Speaker 2: What have you improved most, would you say, from year
- 33:58Speaker 2: one to now?
- 34:01Speaker 10: I'd probably say my decisiveness and just getting that confidence
- 34:05Speaker 10: just way through the roof. You know, once you got
- 34:07Speaker 10: that confidence, you feel like you can do everything. So
- 34:08Speaker 10: I think that's just the main thing that's been different
- 34:11Speaker 10: with me.
- 34:12Speaker 2: Thank you, sir. Appreciate it. Thank you. That's Tyrese Knight,
- 34:16Speaker 2: who was the starter as a rookie in 2024 as
- 34:19Speaker 2: the inside weak side linebacker when they went to two
- 34:21Speaker 2: linebackers and five defensive backs. He named six defensive backs
- 34:25Speaker 2: at times, like McDonald wants to do. If they can't
- 34:29Speaker 2: do that because of personnel shortages, expect Knight and Drake
- 34:33Speaker 2: Thomas to be on the field at the same time.
- 34:35Speaker 2: And that would be a wrinkle to the Patriots they
- 34:37Speaker 2: haven't seen on film. And the openers are all full
- 34:40Speaker 2: of surprises. You don't have film. You don't know what
- 34:43Speaker 2: they're going to come out with. The Patriots are going
- 34:44Speaker 2: to do things, obviously, they didn't do in Super Bowl 60,
- 34:46Speaker 2: six and a half, seven months ago. And so will
- 34:49Speaker 2: the Seahawks. And we've talked about how he's going to
- 34:51Speaker 2: have different fronts. He's going to have different blitzes. Well,
- 34:53Speaker 2: this three off-ball linebackers would be different. He'd have essentially
- 34:56Speaker 2: five linebackers on the field because you have Derek Hall
- 35:00Speaker 2: and Demarcus Lawrence as your edge pass rushers coming off
- 35:02Speaker 2: the edge. And then Drake Thomas and Tyrese Knight, who's
- 35:06Speaker 2: had a phenomenal camp. He is back in the coach's
- 35:08Speaker 2: good graces. He lost ground last year when he got
- 35:11Speaker 2: injured in training camp and Drake Thomas took his job
- 35:14Speaker 2: and he never got it back last season. Well, he's
- 35:15Speaker 2: getting things back now and he's had such a good
- 35:18Speaker 2: training camp and preseason that he may have forced his
- 35:20Speaker 2: way into the starting lineup with Thomas and Ernest Jones.
- 35:25Speaker 2: We'll see. It'll be interesting to see how much they
- 35:27Speaker 2: go to three linebackers and not the extra defensive backs.
- 35:30Speaker 2: It would keep Witherspoon out of the nickel spot that
- 35:32Speaker 2: McDonald would rather play him in. Honestly, I don't think
- 35:36Speaker 2: it's going to matter. I don't think Drake may and
- 35:38Speaker 2: the patriots are going to move the ball on the
- 35:39Speaker 2: seahawks no matter what alignment.
- 35:41Speaker 4: They're in yeah my husband disagrees but of course he's
- 35:44Speaker 4: just you know from new england he just is yeah.
- 35:48Speaker 2: I thought the same thing in the super bowl i
- 35:50Speaker 2: said it before i said they're not this is going
- 35:51Speaker 2: to be a boat race and it was the patriots.
- 35:53Speaker 4: You said that to me right before the game too
- 35:56Speaker 4: yes and you're like oh i think they're just gonna
- 35:58Speaker 4: crush them uh you said it yeah i think you
- 36:01Speaker 4: used that word actually that.
- 36:03Speaker 2: I think it's going to happen again. I think the
- 36:05Speaker 2: Seahawks are going to boat race him because I can't
- 36:07Speaker 2: see Drake May and the Patriots moving down the field
- 36:09Speaker 2: for touchdowns against this team.
- 36:11Speaker 3: I was going to ask, boat race via field goals again?
- 36:14Speaker 2: No, that was Sam Darnold's. He still is upset about
- 36:19Speaker 2: how he played in the Super Bowl and missing touchdowns.
- 36:20Speaker 3: But he protected the ball.
- 36:22Speaker 2: And that's the most important reason why they won. That's
- 36:24Speaker 2: the reason they won throughout the postseason. Darnold didn't turn
- 36:26Speaker 2: it over. The guy who led the NFL in turnovers
- 36:28Speaker 2: last regular season didn't turn it over at all in
- 36:31Speaker 2: the postseason. Up next... More side stories to this opener.
- 36:36Speaker 2: Brian Fleury, the new offensive coordinator, has never done this before.
- 36:40Speaker 2: In fact, he just became an offensive coach a few
- 36:42Speaker 2: years ago. He was a defensive coach before this. And
- 36:45Speaker 2: now he's the offensive play caller in Week 1, the
- 36:47Speaker 2: very first game for the Super Bowl champions. You'll hear
- 36:50Speaker 2: from Brian Fleury, the offensive coordinator for the Seahawks, next.
- 36:52Speaker 2: And Elise Woodward at 11 o'clock to give her perspective
- 36:55Speaker 2: from her first time being the voice of the Huskies
- 36:57Speaker 2: yesterday in the Apple Cup. Factor Fiction is at 11.35,
- 37:00Speaker 2: all coming up on 93.3 KJRFM. Welcome back, Greg Bell,
- 37:36Speaker 2: Justin McIntyre with you live on 93.3 KJR FM from cloudy, foggy,
- 37:42Speaker 2: drizzly Seattle.
- 37:43Speaker 3: That's when the whales come out.
- 37:45Speaker 2: Oh, we could almost see the whales here from my
- 37:47Speaker 2: office view right over the Elliott Bay.
- 37:50Speaker 4: You know, our fearless leader, our boss, told me one time,
- 37:54Speaker 4: right when I started working with you, too, because normally
- 37:56Speaker 4: I'd be right out there working on Ian's show or
- 38:00Speaker 4: preparing for Ian's show. And he comes running in and said,
- 38:03Speaker 4: there were just two humpbacks coming by.
- 38:06Speaker 3: Why would you tell me that?
- 38:08Speaker 2: After it happened?
- 38:09Speaker 4: Yes. Yes.
- 38:10Speaker 3: I was very, very upset.
- 38:12Speaker 2: Happy Labor Day to you. Thanks for listening. The Seahawks
- 38:14Speaker 2: play in two days. The NFL season opening game, 5-20,
- 38:17Speaker 2: on Wednesday night at Lumen Field against the New England Patriots.
- 38:21Speaker 2: It'll be the first game ever for Brian Fleury as
- 38:24Speaker 2: an offensive play caller in the league. The new offensive coordinator,
- 38:27Speaker 2: the former tight ends coach the previous four seasons for
- 38:29Speaker 2: the San Francisco 49ers. We talked to him yesterday about
- 38:33Speaker 2: this opportunity. He had a funny answer to my question
- 38:35Speaker 2: here in a few seconds. You'll hear. My question was,
- 38:39Speaker 2: who has he been relying on for advice in this
- 38:42Speaker 2: new job as a Super Bowl champions play caller? This
- 38:44Speaker 2: is Brian Fleury, the new offensive coordinator for the Seahawks.
- 38:47Speaker 2: You get your first chance.
- 38:48Speaker 4: To call plays in an NFL game and all that.
- 38:50Speaker 6: How much are you.
- 38:51Speaker 2: Looking forward to that? Obviously, I'm really looking forward to it.
- 38:54Speaker 8: I've had more fun out here at practice these last
- 38:56Speaker 8: two days than probably any of the last seven years,
- 38:57Speaker 8: so I'm excited to continue this journey and get out
- 39:01Speaker 8: there for the first time on Thursday.
- 39:02Speaker 2: What's been fun?
- 39:04Speaker 8: Just going into the game plan process with the guys.
- 39:07Speaker 8: It's such a great group of guys, and they have
- 39:10Speaker 8: so much experience together. They all have great ownership of
- 39:12Speaker 8: the offense, and so being able to talk about things
- 39:15Speaker 8: and how I see it and how they see it
- 39:16Speaker 8: and make sure that it's all synchronized together has been
- 39:20Speaker 8: really fun.
- 39:21Speaker 2: If anyone, Brian, have you sought for advice on physical experience?
- 39:25Speaker 8: Unfortunately, the people I would seek advice from aren't really
- 39:28Speaker 8: interested in seeing us do well, so.
- 39:31Speaker 2: not many. What have you seen? This is obviously your
- 39:33Speaker 2: first camp working with Sam.
- 39:34Speaker 6: What have you seen out of him?
- 39:36Speaker 8: It's my second camp working with Sam. First as a coordinator,
- 39:39Speaker 8: I should say. Yeah, I mean, just his growth over
- 39:43Speaker 8: the last three years since I've been with him and
- 39:45Speaker 8: his confidence level has increased significantly and his ownership of
- 39:48Speaker 8: the offense and his His command over just the room
- 39:51Speaker 8: and the group has been really impressive.
- 39:54Speaker 11: You told a lot of guys today that communication is
- 39:57Speaker 11: super important week one when you're adjusting on the fly.
- 40:00Speaker 11: When did you know you were over the hump in
- 40:02Speaker 11: making sure that messaging was clear across all phases?
- 40:06Speaker 8: Messaging has been clear since I walked in, and that's
- 40:08Speaker 8: a credit to Mike and John. We really kind of
- 40:13Speaker 8: got over the hump as we got back into training camp,
- 40:15Speaker 8: I think.
- 40:15Speaker 2: It became clear. really clear.
- 40:17Speaker 8: We had some growth opportunities in the offseason as they
- 40:20Speaker 8: were getting used to how I see things and they
- 40:22Speaker 8: were coming from Clint's offense and how they saw things.
- 40:25Speaker 8: And then when we got here in training camp is
- 40:27Speaker 8: really when we kind of hit the ground running within
- 40:28Speaker 8: that first week.
- 40:29Speaker 2: It used to be in the 80s that speed was
- 40:31Speaker 2: about vertical stretch.
- 40:33Speaker 12: Now you see it used for stretching the field horizontally
- 40:36Speaker 12: as well.
- 40:36Speaker 2: Talk about how those two things work together.
- 40:39Speaker 8: Yeah, obviously you want mixed elements. There's vertical separation, which
- 40:43Speaker 8: you can create with speed down the field, but also
- 40:45Speaker 8: You know, horizontal could be lateral quickness, like the shorter
- 40:49Speaker 8: area moves similar to like a West Welker or something
- 40:51Speaker 8: like that. And then there's also the ability just to
- 40:54Speaker 8: use the entire width of the field with the same
- 40:56Speaker 8: type of speed that.
- 40:57Speaker 2: You would stretch it vertically with.
- 40:58Speaker 8: So, you know, if you're using all 54, 53 and
- 41:01Speaker 8: a quarter yards and whatever's left to the end zone,
- 41:04Speaker 8: you're doing a great job.
- 41:05Speaker 6: Are you going to be down on the field or
- 41:07Speaker 6: up in there?
- 41:08Speaker 8: Yeah, I'm going to call it from down. I was
- 41:09Speaker 8: really pleased with the communication from upstairs. Justin Allen's doing
- 41:12Speaker 8: a great job. Tyson Prince is up there too. And
- 41:14Speaker 8: the information and Daniel Stern also, the quickness with which they're.
- 41:19Speaker 2: Getting it to me has been outstanding. So I feel
- 41:21Speaker 2: very comfortable being on the field. What are the pluses
- 41:23Speaker 2: to doing it there?
- 41:24Speaker 8: I just like being able to communicate in real time
- 41:27Speaker 8: with the players. The way I want to call the
- 41:30Speaker 8: game lasts about two series, and then you get into
- 41:33Speaker 8: the flow of it and there's adjustments being made. And
- 41:35Speaker 8: it gives me an opportunity to preview maybe things on
- 41:38Speaker 8: the call sheet that I want to go to next
- 41:39Speaker 8: and why. and anticipate just like one little nugget of
- 41:42Speaker 8: coaching point that I think might make a difference. It's
- 41:44Speaker 8: just easier to communicate that in person face to face
- 41:48Speaker 8: when you're dealing in like microseconds. You know, I just
- 41:50Speaker 8: like that part of it better.
- 41:51Speaker 2: You remind us two series.
- 41:54Speaker 6: What's that? What do you mean the way you want
- 41:55Speaker 6: to call a game on the last two?
- 41:56Speaker 8: I just mean, I mean, we're dealing with outdated information
- 41:59Speaker 8: in terms of what the New England defense is going
- 42:00Speaker 8: to look like. And so how they decide to play
- 42:02Speaker 8: us will start to take shape within the first two
- 42:04Speaker 8: series is what I mean.
- 42:06Speaker 2: You remind us which preseason games you did it from
- 42:08Speaker 2: the field.
- 42:09Speaker 8: I was on the field the first one against Dallas
- 42:11Speaker 8: and the third one against Kansas.
- 42:12Speaker 2: You're a rookie tailback, which you work with him every day,
- 42:14Speaker 2: but he hasn't played since November. What are you curious
- 42:16Speaker 2: about Wednesday night?
- 42:19Speaker 8: I'm just excited. I wouldn't say curious. I'm just excited
- 42:21Speaker 8: to watch him play. I'm excited to see him get
- 42:23Speaker 8: his first touch. I'm excited to see him be able
- 42:25Speaker 8: to play in this atmosphere, and I think it's going
- 42:28Speaker 8: to be the beginning of a really good career.
- 42:32Speaker 2: That's Brian Fleury, the new offensive coordinator for the Seahawks,
- 42:35Speaker 2: the third offensive coordinator in four years, if you count
- 42:38Speaker 2: Shane Waldron, the end of his tenure, and then it
- 42:40Speaker 2: was Ryan Grubb. Then it was Clint Kubiak last year,
- 42:44Speaker 2: and now a first-time play caller for a Super Bowl champion.
- 42:47Speaker 2: That's unusual. He was a defensive coach until just seven
- 42:50Speaker 2: years ago when he became an offensive assistant for the 49ers.
- 42:53Speaker 2: His only coordinator job was as a defensive coordinator at
- 42:56Speaker 2: Sacred Heart University in Connecticut.
- 42:58Speaker 3: I know it well.
- 42:59Speaker 2: You played against them, I think.
- 43:00Speaker 3: Yes, I did. And they were very good.
- 43:03Speaker 2: And now he's going to be the play caller for
- 43:05Speaker 2: the first time for the Seahawks on Wednesday night. And
- 43:07Speaker 2: Jadarian Price, we talked about all the questions on offense
- 43:10Speaker 2: or on defense. On offense, the Seahawks' questions start with
- 43:13Speaker 2: their lead running back. Their new rookie lead running back,
- 43:16Speaker 2: Jadarian Price, has not played since November 29th of last year,
- 43:19Speaker 2: 10 months ago.
- 43:20Speaker 3: But that's not his.
- 43:21Speaker 4: No.
- 43:22Speaker 2: He was from Notre Dame. And Notre Dame didn't go
- 43:25Speaker 2: to a bowl game because they got ticked. They didn't
- 43:26Speaker 2: go to a college football playoff. And then the Seahawks
- 43:29Speaker 2: decided that none of the starters, including their top rookie
- 43:31Speaker 2: and first-round pick, were not going to play at all
- 43:33Speaker 2: in the preseason, which is why it is a curiosity
- 43:37Speaker 2: to me to see what this new rookie running back
- 43:39Speaker 2: is going to look like in a game for the
- 43:41Speaker 2: first time.
- 43:42Speaker 3: I think he's going to be fresh.
- 43:43Speaker 2: When it's real. He should be fresh. I talked about
- 43:45Speaker 2: him on Saturday. I talked about how fresh he is. Well,
- 43:48Speaker 2: I've been working pretty hard during training camp as well.
- 43:51Speaker 3: It's not like he's not working.
- 43:52Speaker 2: Yeah, he kind of was like, hey, I haven't just
- 43:55Speaker 2: been kicking back.
- 43:56Speaker 4: Also, that's some integrity to stay with a program when
- 43:59Speaker 4: you know that you're not going to touch grass for
- 44:02Speaker 4: a very long time. It's going to be, and I
- 44:04Speaker 4: think that speaks to what he has to offer going forward.
- 44:08Speaker 2: He will be the number one back. George Helani will
- 44:10Speaker 2: be with him. And Emmanuel Wilson is back to practice.
- 44:12Speaker 2: He was full go yesterday. He's had that hamstring that
- 44:14Speaker 2: he missed most of August with. He's going to be
- 44:16Speaker 2: the short yardage back, it appears. a more thudding, pounding
- 44:19Speaker 2: runner than the other two on Wednesday night. Up next,
- 44:23Speaker 2: back to the Apple Cup, back to Elyse Woodward, who
- 44:25Speaker 2: had her debut yesterday. First game as the full-time voice
- 44:28Speaker 2: of the Huskies. We're going to get her perspective. What
- 44:31Speaker 2: was her preparation like? Did she over-prepare? Did she not
- 44:34Speaker 2: use everything she prepared for? Did she need headsets to
- 44:37Speaker 2: even hear Softie Mahler screaming from the sidelines seven levels below?
- 44:41Speaker 2: I say no. You'll hear from Elyse Woodward next. 11.35,
- 44:44Speaker 2: Factor Fiction makes its debut online. For the first time
- 44:47Speaker 2: on our show, your chance to bet, or not bet,
- 44:50Speaker 2: pick against us a chance to win $ 1, 000 this week.
- 44:52Speaker 4: It's just a fun contest that we have going.
- 44:56Speaker 2: Presented by the Lucky Eagle Casino Resort. All that's coming
- 44:59Speaker 2: up on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 45:16Speaker 1: Now, from the Star Reynolds Sports Desk, your 93.3 KJR
- 45:20Speaker 1: FM Sports Headlines.
- 45:21Speaker 2: Good morning. Happy Labor Day. Glad you're listening. Thanks for
- 45:25Speaker 2: laboring with us. Yes. Thanks for laboring with us. Headlines
- 45:28Speaker 2: are brought to you by Coors Light. As cold as
- 45:31Speaker 2: the rock is. 118th Apple Cup. Wasn't pretty, wasn't smooth.
- 45:34Speaker 2: Another win for the Huskies, though. They overcame themselves in
- 45:38Speaker 2: some really unintelligent plays to beat the Washington State Cougars 24-10.
- 45:40Speaker 2: The Cougs' defense was strong. turning away the Huskies a
- 45:44Speaker 2: couple times inside the 10-yard line. DeMond Williams for the Huskies,
- 45:48Speaker 2: 329 total yards and two of Washington's three touchdowns. Clinching
- 45:52Speaker 2: scramble and a juke of two Cougs in the open
- 45:54Speaker 2: field on a third and nine with three minutes left
- 45:56Speaker 2: in a 17-10 game was the clinching play. Much more
- 46:00Speaker 2: in the Apple Cup coming right up in a few
- 46:02Speaker 2: minutes with Elyse Woodward. This weekend, UW hosts Utah State,
- 46:05Speaker 2: which lost its home opener to Idaho State. Washington State
- 46:09Speaker 2: is at Kansas State. K-State won its opener 71-3 over
- 46:14Speaker 2: FCS Nichols. Also in college football, Big Ten officials put
- 46:18Speaker 2: an extra second that didn't exist on an apparently secret
- 46:20Speaker 2: clock no one but the Big Ten replay officials knew
- 46:23Speaker 2: about to give Michigan a final play touchdown that beat
- 46:26Speaker 2: Western Michigan 13-12 at the Big House in Ann Arbor.
- 46:30Speaker 2: Blatantly shady result there. Of course, you know, the Big
- 46:33Speaker 2: Ten doesn't need Michigan losing to Western Michigan, which would
- 46:36Speaker 2: end their playoff hopes in week one.
- 46:38Speaker 3: Oh, are you speaking a little conspiracy into this? Absolutely.
- 46:40Speaker 3: Because I am.
- 46:41Speaker 2: That was just ridiculous.
- 46:43Speaker 3: That was so dumb.
- 46:44Speaker 2: That was ridiculous. Last night, there's a whole other thing
- 46:47Speaker 2: to that. It used to be that when non-conference guys
- 46:52Speaker 2: played those money games, they could bring their refereeing crew,
- 46:55Speaker 2: officiating crews. There would be a MAAC crew on the
- 46:58Speaker 2: game in Ann Arbor.
- 46:58Speaker 3: That's not the case anymore.
- 46:59Speaker 2: Now it's to the point where the big boys will say, nope,
- 47:01Speaker 2: we're going to have a Big Ten crew, and if
- 47:02Speaker 2: you don't want to play us, we'll go find some
- 47:03Speaker 2: other directional school to play us. You take your $ 3
- 47:06Speaker 2: million payday and you either want it or not.
- 47:08Speaker 3: I've witnessed it.
- 47:10Speaker 2: Yeah, it used to be that a MAAC crew would
- 47:12Speaker 2: have been on that game. Not anymore. The big boys
- 47:16Speaker 2: get to call the shots and have their own refereeing
- 47:17Speaker 2: officiating crews. And the Big Ten, of course, is not
- 47:20Speaker 2: interested in Michigan not being in the playoff because they
- 47:22Speaker 2: lost to Western Michigan. The Seahawks, they got some issues
- 47:26Speaker 2: in their defensive secondary for Wednesday night's NFL opener against
- 47:29Speaker 2: New England at Lumen Field. Signs and what teammates are
- 47:31Speaker 2: saying are pointing to Nick Imanori not playing. And now
- 47:35Speaker 2: fellow starting safety Ty Okada has a hamstring injury. He
- 47:37Speaker 2: didn't practice yesterday. The team has one healthy safety on
- 47:40Speaker 2: the 53-man roster, Julian Love. The Anthony Bell signed back
- 47:44Speaker 2: this past weekend after they cut him last week, and
- 47:46Speaker 2: the veteran's safety has a chance to be starting with
- 47:48Speaker 2: Love on Wednesday now. There's also the issue of who
- 47:50Speaker 2: may be the third corner that we talked about last
- 47:52Speaker 2: segment with Mike McDonald wanting to use Devin Witherspoon inside
- 47:56Speaker 2: a nickel. The alternatives are plenty, but there's questions on
- 47:59Speaker 2: all of them, including whether Trevon Diggs is ready to
- 48:01Speaker 2: go after signing in the last week of the preseason.
- 48:03Speaker 2: The Mariners lost three of four at home to the Athletics.
- 48:06Speaker 2: Remember that easy schedule that's coming up in September? It's
- 48:09Speaker 2: only easy if you beat the teams that are easy.
- 48:10Speaker 2: All right. Three of four at the yard. They lost
- 48:14Speaker 2: to the A's. More low IQ baseball that we talked
- 48:16Speaker 2: about at the top of the show. They're six games
- 48:18Speaker 2: out with 18 games left. They're off today, so they
- 48:21Speaker 2: won't lose. They begin a three-game series at the yard
- 48:23Speaker 2: in Soto against Texas tomorrow. The Sounders across the street
- 48:27Speaker 2: from where I was in the yard Saturday night were
- 48:28Speaker 2: playing at the same time against the New York Red Bulls.
- 48:31Speaker 2: They had three veteran starters back from injury. According to Jordan,
- 48:34Speaker 2: Morris came back. Christian Roldan came back, and they still
- 48:36Speaker 2: didn't score. Nil-no-home draw. against the Red Bulls. That's now
- 48:40Speaker 2: 11 MLS matches in a row without a win for
- 48:42Speaker 2: the Sounders extending their franchise worst streak. High school football
- 48:46Speaker 2: opener that we featured on Friday with the great talk
- 48:48Speaker 2: with both coaches. Lake Stevens held off Graham Kapowsin this weekend,
- 48:51Speaker 2: 31-26 in a showdown of two of the top four
- 48:54Speaker 2: teams in the Class 4A in the state. Bellevue won
- 48:57Speaker 2: 14-10 at Kennedy Catholic in the other big showdown of
- 48:59Speaker 2: state powers this weekend. Friday, we're going to do it again.
- 49:02Speaker 2: Another showdown this weekend, and we're going to reveal the
- 49:06Speaker 2: Game we're going to do, the coaches we're going to
- 49:07Speaker 2: talk to, we're going to do that on Friday. Remember,
- 49:10Speaker 2: 1135 Factor Fiction presented by Lucky Eagle Casino. But right now,
- 49:14Speaker 2: we're going to the Beacon Plumbing Hotline. where the washington
- 49:20Speaker 2: huskies play-by-play announcer the voice of the huskies elise woodward
- 49:24Speaker 2: she's fresh off her very first broadcast as a full-time
- 49:29Speaker 2: she's done it before in a fill-in role but never
- 49:31Speaker 2: full-time and now the voice of the huskies having her
- 49:34Speaker 2: first Apple Cup in her first game yesterday, a 24-10
- 49:36Speaker 2: win for the Dawgs. Elise Woodward joins us live here
- 49:39Speaker 2: on the Beacon Plumbing High. Good morning, ma'am, and congratulations.
- 49:42Speaker 2: You sounded great yesterday as I was driving home from
- 49:45Speaker 2: the Seahawks, and it must have been a ton of fun.
- 49:49Speaker 7: Well, thanks, Greg. You're a busy man. You're all over
- 49:51Speaker 7: the place. So, yeah, I.
- 49:53Speaker 5: Was just talking to Jessamyn, both of us over there.
- 49:57Speaker 5: I think it was a closer game than most people thought,
- 49:59Speaker 5: but I also think game one, especially with, you know,
- 50:04Speaker 5: football is now with so many new faces and new
- 50:06Speaker 5: places and and all the things that it often takes
- 50:10Speaker 5: time to work out kinks and um but when it's
- 50:13Speaker 5: in a rivalry game i think things can get stickier
- 50:16Speaker 5: at the end of the season at the beginning of
- 50:18Speaker 5: the season whatever it is i think you can have
- 50:20Speaker 5: a grinded out football game but uh yeah the huskies
- 50:22Speaker 5: got what they came for and that was a win.
- 50:24Speaker 2: How was it for you did you have fun was
- 50:27Speaker 2: it nerve-wracking was it comfortable what was.
- 50:30Speaker 5: It I don't think anybody would describe that game as comfortable.
- 50:36Speaker 7: No, it wasn't. But it was fun.
- 50:38Speaker 5: It was a lot more fun when the Huskies put
- 50:40Speaker 5: up two touchdowns in the fourth quarter. But I think
- 50:43Speaker 5: there was a lot of nervous energy in the stadium because, look,
- 50:48Speaker 5: you just don't know in a game one of the
- 50:50Speaker 5: season what to expect. And it's a feeling out process. So, yeah,
- 50:55Speaker 5: I think it was nerve-wracking until the fourth quarter for
- 50:58Speaker 5: the fans, for sure. As for the broadcast, I thought...
- 51:01Speaker 5: You know, there's things just like the Huskies. There's things
- 51:03Speaker 5: to clean up. There's things to do better. But overall,
- 51:06Speaker 5: I thought it was good.
- 51:07Speaker 7: So, yeah, I had a great time.
- 51:09Speaker 5: Cam is awesome. Softie is crazy and perfect. And so
- 51:13Speaker 5: we had a really good time.
- 51:15Speaker 2: Well, take us a little bit behind the curtain, Elise.
- 51:17Speaker 2: What is the preparation like? I know a ton of
- 51:19Speaker 2: studying on depth charts and notes. Did you find yourself overprepared, underprepared?
- 51:24Speaker 2: Did you get everything that you wanted to get to?
- 51:26Speaker 2: Did you get all the information you had researched and studied?
- 51:29Speaker 2: Did you get to it? Was it– and what would
- 51:33Speaker 2: you like to improve upon? Because this is a neat
- 51:35Speaker 2: little deal to take over an institution like this, and
- 51:38Speaker 2: of course it's not going to be exactly as you
- 51:39Speaker 2: want it to first come out.
- 51:40Speaker 3: That's not a little deal, Greg.
- 51:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 51:45Speaker 7: You know, it's funny.
- 51:46Speaker 5: When I first started doing this so long ago that
- 51:48Speaker 5: I don't want to make myself sound like more of
- 51:50Speaker 5: a fossil than I already am, but you always over-prepare.
- 51:54Speaker 7: There's no question. You have to prepare for– crazy things
- 51:58Speaker 7: to happen.
- 51:59Speaker 5: You have to prepare for what if this guy on
- 52:01Speaker 5: the defense has a game-winning interception. So you're going to
- 52:04Speaker 5: go deep on your boards, and a lot of it
- 52:06Speaker 5: is completely unnecessary because that never happens. But you never
- 52:10Speaker 5: know when you need to go there.
- 52:11Speaker 7: So yes, there's absolutely.
- 52:13Speaker 5: a million things that are prepared that never make the air. Um,
- 52:16Speaker 5: and that's good.
- 52:18Speaker 7: You have to live with it. Don't try to force
- 52:19Speaker 7: things in or anything like that.
- 52:21Speaker 5: Um, no, I think, you know, it's all, I always
- 52:24Speaker 5: say that with a broadcast, it's so often that you
- 52:27Speaker 5: feel like your broadcast mirrors the style of the game.
- 52:31Speaker 5: So if it's a free flowing offensive, beautiful performance that
- 52:35Speaker 5: you get to call eight touchdowns and it's, uh, everybody's
- 52:39Speaker 5: cheering and it's crazy in the stadium, um, That sounds
- 52:42Speaker 5: like a better broadcast.
- 52:43Speaker 2: Than a 10-7.
- 52:45Speaker 7: Grinder where it's like three.
- 52:47Speaker 5: Yards and the big plays are the little plays. If
- 52:53Speaker 5: you hold them to three yards instead of five and
- 52:55Speaker 5: then you force third and you get them off the field.
- 52:58Speaker 5: Some of that stuff is not super beautiful or super exciting,
- 53:02Speaker 5: but you got to call them as the game brings
- 53:04Speaker 5: to you.
- 53:04Speaker 7: You don't get to choose what style and what kind
- 53:06Speaker 7: of game it was.
- 53:07Speaker 5: So for me, You know, for what we were looking
- 53:10Speaker 5: for game one, yeah, I was really pleased with a
- 53:13Speaker 5: lot of parts of the broadcast. And, of course, you're
- 53:15Speaker 5: always working to get better.
- 53:16Speaker 2: Of course, you know the voice. It's Elise Woodward, the
- 53:19Speaker 2: voice of the Huskies, who's joining us here on the
- 53:21Speaker 2: Beacon Public Hotline a day after her first game and
- 53:23Speaker 2: the Huskies' first game of the season. 24-10 win in
- 53:26Speaker 2: the Apple Cup. You've done this before, of course. You've
- 53:30Speaker 2: done it nationally for Fox and football and college basketball.
- 53:34Speaker 2: You've done it as a fraternity leave fill-in for Tony.
- 53:37Speaker 2: Castricone on the Huskies broadcast, but was there anything that
- 53:39Speaker 2: surprised you or that you weren't ready for?
- 53:41Speaker 7: Oh, that's a good question. Anything surprised me? No, I
- 53:47Speaker 7: don't think there was any surprises.
- 53:50Speaker 5: You know, I just think, you know, like, like everything,
- 53:54Speaker 5: I think, I think the biggest challenge perhaps was that
- 53:58Speaker 5: game one, I'm a big believer in watching film and,
- 54:02Speaker 5: you know, to see how guys move and to be
- 54:03Speaker 5: able to identify as soon as pot, like right as soon,
- 54:06Speaker 5: like the way they run or if they have a
- 54:08Speaker 5: pink head, you know, pink wristband or if they have
- 54:10Speaker 5: a towel or whatever, there's little identifiers because we are
- 54:13Speaker 5: very high and very deep at Husky Stadium.
- 54:17Speaker 7: So it is very difficult.
- 54:18Speaker 5: Like one of the plays is, I thought it was
- 54:20Speaker 5: Buda Baker because his body type, the same exact size
- 54:23Speaker 5: as Jacob Manu, and Manu had his jersey, was.
- 54:25Speaker 7: Kind of like crunkled. So it looked like a zero.
- 54:28Speaker 7: And it was a nine. So you've got to really
- 54:30Speaker 7: hone in from up there.
- 54:32Speaker 5: And it was a challenge because for Washington State, they
- 54:35Speaker 5: had 50 new players, brand new coaches, brand new staff.
- 54:38Speaker 5: So not being able to watch a game of film,
- 54:40Speaker 5: and they didn't release a depth chart.
- 54:41Speaker 2: So it was.
- 54:43Speaker 7: You know, just, you got to really roll with the punches.
- 54:46Speaker 5: And so there's sometimes a delay in like trying to
- 54:49Speaker 5: identify because you literally, it's the first time you've seen this,
- 54:55Speaker 5: you know, the starting 22s for Washington State. So, yeah,
- 54:59Speaker 5: I don't think it was a surprise. It was just,
- 55:01Speaker 5: you know, you really had to, you really had to
- 55:04Speaker 5: focus in on who was on the field and the
- 55:08Speaker 5: personnel early in this game because nobody knew what it
- 55:12Speaker 5: was going to be.
- 55:12Speaker 2: There's different ways to do it, of course, at least.
- 55:14Speaker 2: Do you play-by-play with binoculars on or do you just
- 55:17Speaker 2: consult binoculars between plays?
- 55:20Speaker 7: Oh, absolutely binoculars on. Yeah, I have to.
- 55:25Speaker 5: There's two different sports that I have to call with binoculars,
- 55:28Speaker 5: and it's football.
- 55:29Speaker 7: And it's soccer.
- 55:30Speaker 5: Because the field is so big and because.
- 55:33Speaker 7: There's so much space to cover.
- 55:34Speaker 5: And if you go far side corner, like it's really
- 55:38Speaker 5: difficult to see. Luckily, the Rasheed Williams play was right near.
- 55:42Speaker 5: It was near side.
- 55:44Speaker 2: Right.
- 55:44Speaker 5: But I couldn't tell that he had stepped on the
- 55:46Speaker 5: sideline like that. Even the officials that were there two
- 55:48Speaker 5: feet from him couldn't tell until they went to review.
- 55:51Speaker 7: But yeah, no, I go binoculars everywhere.
- 55:55Speaker 5: The wide angle that it's saved my life.
- 55:58Speaker 7: That's for sure.
- 56:01Speaker 4: Well, Elise, you talk about having to read body language
- 56:04Speaker 4: and seeing, you know, even if it comes to a
- 56:07Speaker 4: sticker on a helmet, a bracelet a guy's wearing, how
- 56:10Speaker 4: much did sideline reporting like teach you about that before
- 56:15Speaker 4: you were so many floors upstairs?
- 56:18Speaker 5: Well, you know, it's a totally different vantage point. And
- 56:22Speaker 5: neither one of them are perfect. When you're on the sideline,
- 56:25Speaker 5: you know this, Jessamyn, like you can't see far side.
- 56:27Speaker 7: Corner at all.
- 56:28Speaker 3: You can't see the whole field.
- 56:29Speaker 7: I had to turn and watch a lot of, no,
- 56:31Speaker 7: you had to turn.
- 56:31Speaker 5: And that's why I think it's fascinating that the coordinators,
- 56:34Speaker 5: like Ryan Walters, the coordinator is on the field. And
- 56:37Speaker 5: he said, hey, we got iPads. We're down on the field.
- 56:39Speaker 5: This is new technology. They have eyes up in the booth.
- 56:42Speaker 5: But I think that's fascinating because when you are up top,
- 56:46Speaker 5: you're not in there to feel the intensity and the
- 56:52Speaker 5: mood and the atmosphere and what you need.
- 56:54Speaker 2: You are in a booth.
- 56:56Speaker 5: And so I think it is fascinating from that, like
- 56:58Speaker 5: the different vantage points. You can hear the pads pop.
- 57:01Speaker 5: You know when it's a huge stick. You can feel
- 57:03Speaker 5: the crowd. I think it's easier to be in tune
- 57:06Speaker 5: with momentum inside when you're on the sideline. But you also,
- 57:10Speaker 5: when you're down there, if it's a far side pitch,
- 57:13Speaker 5: you know far side play you can be completely blocked
- 57:16Speaker 5: and then if you're happen to be you know behind
- 57:18Speaker 5: the team you're you totally hoops oh my gosh you've
- 57:21Speaker 5: got to.
- 57:21Speaker 4: Turn around on the scoreboard if you are like behind
- 57:24Speaker 4: the offensive line or the defensive line you're yeah i
- 57:27Speaker 4: mean i we're not small we're not very short people
- 57:31Speaker 4: but we are not that tall um uh yeah five.
- 57:35Speaker 7: 5'10 is not nearly tall enough.
- 57:37Speaker 2: That's all I know.
- 57:38Speaker 4: Well, it's funny because my dad was a linebackers coach forever,
- 57:42Speaker 4: and then he was a defensive coordinator for a very
- 57:45Speaker 4: long time as well. And he said once he went
- 57:47Speaker 4: to the booth, he was so calm because he could
- 57:51Speaker 4: see everything.
- 57:52Speaker 2: I can imagine.
- 57:53Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 57:54Speaker 3: So, yeah, I'm just wondering if you had that same feeling.
- 57:58Speaker 2: Was it calmer up there?
- 57:59Speaker 7: No, and it's... Well, there's no doubt.
- 58:02Speaker 4: It is....
- 58:04Speaker 5: And we have the window open so we can hear.
- 58:06Speaker 5: I cannot stand to be in a bubble where you
- 58:10Speaker 5: can't hear. Some of the booths were like, you have
- 58:11Speaker 5: to really fight to get the window up. And to
- 58:15Speaker 5: not hear the crowd and to not hear... Even the
- 58:20Speaker 5: whistles sometimes, if they're upstairs, it's a lot harder because
- 58:24Speaker 5: you're so far away. So, yeah, it is interesting, especially
- 58:30Speaker 5: from a coaching perspective. And Ryan Walters is talking about,
- 58:33Speaker 5: like I said, he wants to be down there to
- 58:35Speaker 5: look into his guys' eyes to.
- 58:36Speaker 7: See what they're feeling and really thinking and to get that.
- 58:41Speaker 7: You've got to give something up, and.
- 58:42Speaker 5: That's like the up-top view. But if you have iPads
- 58:45Speaker 5: for them, then it's great. Now, hauling the game, from
- 58:47Speaker 5: my perspective, no. There's no chance you can do it
- 58:50Speaker 5: on the field.
- 58:51Speaker 4: No way.
- 58:52Speaker 2: Elyse brings up a good point. You heard last segment
- 58:54Speaker 2: from Brian Fleury, the new offensive coordinator for the Seahawks,
- 58:56Speaker 2: is that's the reason he's going to be on the field,
- 58:57Speaker 2: so he can be with the players and feel the
- 58:59Speaker 2: players and directly communicate rather than on the phone with them.
- 59:03Speaker 2: Elyse Wedward joining us on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline a
- 59:05Speaker 2: day after she called the Apple Cup win for the
- 59:07Speaker 2: Washington 24-20. Washington State at Husky Stadium. I got to
- 59:12Speaker 2: ask you, did you even.
- 59:13Speaker 7: Don't be giving any more points.
- 59:15Speaker 2: Exactly. It was close enough, right? We don't need any
- 59:18Speaker 2: more points. I got to ask you, did you even
- 59:22Speaker 2: need your headset to hear Dave Softy-Moller down from the
- 59:24Speaker 2: sideline or could you hear him seven floors below?
- 59:29Speaker 5: And I'm going to be really honest with you guys
- 59:31Speaker 5: right now. Like kudos to Safi. I told him, I
- 59:33Speaker 5: was like, Safi, you are on at what time are
- 59:36Speaker 5: you being on? And he was like having to hustle
- 59:40Speaker 5: after the player interviews to do post game. Like I'm
- 59:44Speaker 5: telling you, I feel like I'm a hustler and I'm
- 59:46Speaker 5: a hard worker and I got to give mad props
- 59:49Speaker 5: to Safi. Like the guy is passionate. He is like,
- 59:53Speaker 5: there's nowhere he'd rather be. And at one point I
- 59:55Speaker 5: was like, after the game, I was like, Softie, like,
- 59:57Speaker 5: are you just going to go sit on.
- 59:58Speaker 7: The couch right now?
- 59:59Speaker 5: And like, you know, maybe meditate.
- 1:00:02Speaker 7: Or something like you kind of like your.
- 1:00:04Speaker 5: Heart rate has got to have been at like 150
- 1:00:06Speaker 5: all day long. And the guy is just, I mean,
- 1:00:10Speaker 5: you know, Softie is one of a kind.
- 1:00:13Speaker 7: That's all I know.
- 1:00:13Speaker 5: But he was hustling all over the place. And yeah,
- 1:00:17Speaker 5: but I probably didn't need, I didn't need headsets for Softie.
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:00:21Speaker 4: I was going to say, yeah, I hate to give
- 1:00:24Speaker 4: him credit because we had some words. Yeah, we always do.
- 1:00:29Speaker 4: He's like my big little brother, I would say. But
- 1:00:34Speaker 4: I have to give him so much credit because his
- 1:00:36Speaker 4: passion deserves to be on the air. And I'm very
- 1:00:40Speaker 4: happy for the Huskies that it is on that broadcast because.
- 1:00:44Speaker 3: He really cares.
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: At least, I got to ask you. Oh, there's no question.
- 1:00:49Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: I'm sorry. I got to ask you. One of the
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: things you were great at with Bob Rondo and Tony
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: Castricone is providing real-time insight from the field on something
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: that the guys upstairs were talking about. And I know
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: you have a butt in the press to be a
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: part of and interject something. How often did you do
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: that with Softie yesterday? Is that something that by play
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: that you got to get used to or you know
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: it really well from having done it on the other
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: end and you knew when to incorporate him from the
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: field and when it could add value? Oh yeah.
- 1:01:15Speaker 7: No, I think I'm for sure.
- 1:01:17Speaker 5: Look, there's, I believe in the broadcast that I like,
- 1:01:21Speaker 5: I agree with that assessment, Greg, that it is a conversation.
- 1:01:25Speaker 7: About what's really going on.
- 1:01:26Speaker 5: It's not, I don't like to say back to you
- 1:01:28Speaker 5: and all of the really formal things, because that's just
- 1:01:31Speaker 5: me and my own personality. I like to just like
- 1:01:33Speaker 5: softy and he can take it away. Now we went
- 1:01:36Speaker 5: down to him quite a bit. And so, you know,
- 1:01:39Speaker 5: it's almost like it's, There is an audio element to
- 1:01:44Speaker 5: it where if the mic is open down there and
- 1:01:46Speaker 5: it's so loud on the field, his mic can't be
- 1:01:48Speaker 5: open all the time.
- 1:01:48Speaker 7: They literally have.
- 1:01:49Speaker 5: A three-person booth from a technical standpoint. So it is
- 1:01:54Speaker 5: like you got to, and you have to time it out.
- 1:01:56Speaker 5: If it is, you know, you look up at the
- 1:01:58Speaker 5: play clock and they're going to line of scrimmage, you
- 1:02:00Speaker 5: can't send it down. So there's a lot of different
- 1:02:01Speaker 5: factors in that. But yeah, no, we incorporated Softie and
- 1:02:05Speaker 5: he got in a lot of great stuff. And, you know,
- 1:02:08Speaker 5: the only unfortunate part was he had Chris Peterson and
- 1:02:10Speaker 5: we went to break and we couldn't get it back.
- 1:02:12Speaker 5: And so it was unfortunate that we couldn't run a
- 1:02:16Speaker 5: interview with Chris Peterson, which was awesome. So that's that's
- 1:02:20Speaker 5: that's one of the regrets that, you know, with timing,
- 1:02:22Speaker 5: you got to hit the break.
- 1:02:23Speaker 7: You got to do all those things. Sometimes great stuff
- 1:02:25Speaker 7: doesn't make the air.
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: Well, you sounded wonderful. You were informative. You were enthusiastic.
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: And it, of course, means so much to you being
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: a dog yourself. And congratulations. And I'm really glad you
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: came on with us. Thanks for having me. You're welcome.
- 1:02:38Speaker 2: It's proud to know you. And I know how hard
- 1:02:41Speaker 2: you've worked for 20 plus years at doing this. All
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: greats to you and keep going. Have a great time.
- 1:02:48Speaker 5: Greg, how is that possible when I'm 18 years old?
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: It's not possible at all.
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: At least we both started working when we were five.
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: That's true. That's what happens. That's right. The 23-year-old voice
- 1:03:00Speaker 2: of the Huskies, Elyse Woodward, joining us here on 93.8.
- 1:03:04Speaker 5: You guys, it is wild because when I said I
- 1:03:06Speaker 5: was on the sideline for 23 years.
- 1:03:09Speaker 7: I was like, oh, my God.
- 1:03:11Speaker 5: How is that possible?
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:03:14Speaker 4: Jeez.
- 1:03:14Speaker 5: It's just like, oh, it's insane.
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: You should be proud.
- 1:03:18Speaker 3: You should be proud.
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: Yes, you should be proud.
- 1:03:20Speaker 7: I appreciate that.
- 1:03:22Speaker 5: I thank you guys.
- 1:03:23Speaker 7: I appreciate it.
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: It was, it was a blast.
- 1:03:25Speaker 5: And you know, just like the Huskies, you go back
- 1:03:27Speaker 5: and you watch film, you listen to stuff and you know,
- 1:03:30Speaker 5: week two, we're going to, we're going to be better.
- 1:03:31Speaker 7: So that's, you know, that's the thing. And got the.
- 1:03:35Speaker 5: Coaches show tonight at six o'clock.
- 1:03:37Speaker 7: So that should be fun over at Eureka.
- 1:03:40Speaker 5: So anybody that wants to come out. You know, Jed's
- 1:03:42Speaker 5: great about that. He really does want to engage the
- 1:03:44Speaker 5: fans and have them come out. And so, yeah, I
- 1:03:47Speaker 5: hope to see everybody tonight at 6 o'clock over in
- 1:03:49Speaker 5: U Village at Eureka for the Coaches Show from 6
- 1:03:51Speaker 5: to 7.
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: Thanks for bringing that up. I forgot to mention that.
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: Hats off to you. We'll be listening again, Utah State
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: this weekend and the Coaches Show tonight at 6 o'clock
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: here on KJF. Thanks, Elyse. You were great. We'll see
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: you soon.
- 1:04:01Speaker 7: Thanks, you guys. Appreciate you guys.
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: You're welcome. Elyse Woodward, the voice of the Huskies, joining
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: us here on 93.3 KJR FM. That's interesting to hear,
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: you know, stuff like that. when to go down to
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: softy from the sidelines and the Chris Peterson interview. Oh,
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: we got to go to commercial. And yeah, you'll always
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: over prepare. The few times I've done it just for
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: the state high school championships, high school football championships. We
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: broadcast every December from Husky stadium here on KJR. I've
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: done it with Chris kid a couple of years and
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: Mike Benton last year. And yeah, you over prepare for
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: just what she said for the, just in cases of
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: the fourth string safety, who makes us play on special
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: teams and you know, his background and you've, hats off
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: to her. She sounded great yesterday. Cam Cleland with her,
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: Dave Softy Mahler with her. They'll be on the broadcast
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: again this coming Saturday for game two of the season
- 1:04:50Speaker 2: for the Washington Huskies against Utah State. And of course,
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: as she mentioned, the coaches show tonight with Jed Fish,
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: the day after show, 6 p.m. It's going to be
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: live from Eureka in University Village in Seattle. If you're
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: in the area, come on down. Jed Fish and Lise
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: would love to see you. That's at 6 o'clock tonight
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: right here on 93.3 KJR FM. Next, your chance to
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: be a part of the show, 49451 at the Comedodge
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: text line. We do your talkbacks on the iHeartRadio app
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: or 933KJR. com. You hit the red microphone button. We'll play
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: those back if you have a 30-second or fewer message.
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: She loves those. Jessamyn will play those back. And then
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: at 11.35, Factor Fiction presented by Lucky Eagle Casino Resort.
- 1:05:30Speaker 2: Your chance to win $ 1, 000 this week. Coming up next
- 1:05:34Speaker 2: on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 1:05:40Speaker 9: Okay, I'm currently a Sooner dad. And it was on
- 1:05:47Speaker 9: a plus station. College football is BS now. Mariners suck.
- 1:05:56Speaker 9: And My daughter's going to transfer to Wazoo, so Jessamyn,
- 1:06:03Speaker 9: you have your hands full. And Marcus, you better come
- 1:06:08Speaker 9: out to the MV.
- 1:06:10Speaker 3: Let's go. Bring her over.
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: That sounds like a challenge.
- 1:06:14Speaker 3: If there's nothing I'm up for more than a challenge.
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: He said he's a Sooner dad. Is that what he said?
- 1:06:20Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: Oklahoma?
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: Oklahoma plays Michigan this weekend in Ann Arbor, presumably maybe
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: with a split crew or SEC crew instead of the
- 1:06:29Speaker 2: Big Ten crew. I would think Oklahoma could get to
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: negotiate that. We talked earlier, one of the things overlooked
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: about that Michigan fiasco with Western Michigan was the fact
- 1:06:39Speaker 2: that Western Michigan didn't get to bring the Mid-American Conference
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: officials to that game. It used to be that when
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: the little boys played a payday game, let's face it,
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: that's what this is, they get millions of dollars to
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: play in Michigan Stadium.
- 1:06:52Speaker 3: That's been pretty transparent, I think.
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: Yeah, but usually you get to bring your officials from
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: your conference to that game. The road officials, the road
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: conference team, I've seen many times mid-American conference officials at
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: Ohio Stadium when Akron or somebody's playing Ohio State, and
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: not this time.
- 1:07:09Speaker 3: Well, that was extremely apparent.
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: Yes, everyone knows now that the Big Ten was officiating
- 1:07:14Speaker 2: that Michigan-Western-Michigan game. That just gives you an indication of
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: the big boys now get to call the shots. Hey,
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: we'll write you a $ 3 million check to play us
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: in Ann Arbor with 110,000 people, but we're going to
- 1:07:25Speaker 2: have our officials there.
- 1:07:26Speaker 3: Yeah, our wink-wink officials.
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: Yeah. And again, it was in the Big Ten's best
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: interest to make sure there was an extra second on
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: that clock so that Michigan wasn't eliminated in week one
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: Labor Day weekend.
- 1:07:37Speaker 3: I'm still so tuned up about that.
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: Because let's face it, if Michigan loses to Western Michigan,
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: they could beat Ohio State. They could go to the
- 1:07:44Speaker 2: Big Ten championship game and still not make the playoffs
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: for that loss. A home loss to Western Michigan in
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: week one.
- 1:07:49Speaker 4: Western Michigan deserved that win.
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: Of course they did. They won. They held Michigan to
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: seven points over 60 minutes. But the game was 60
- 1:07:57Speaker 2: minutes and one second. And that's why they lost.
- 1:07:59Speaker 3: And it's illegal.
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: 49451, it's a coming out of your text line. We'll
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: be back to your text. Factor Fiction is coming up
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: in three minutes, my first pick of the season. A
- 1:08:08Speaker 2: lot of talk about the Mariners on here. Some of
- 1:08:09Speaker 2: them include, why are we talking about the Mariners? This
- 1:08:12Speaker 2: isn't the flagship station. Who said that? 206. I understand
- 1:08:16Speaker 2: why Cairo has to talk about them, but this is KJR.
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: No need to spend time on things that do not matter.
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: The 503 said, I agree with everything you just said
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: in the opening segment. Sit those guys. Should have already happened.
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: Sick of the lack of accountability. I've seen all 50
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: seasons of Mariner baseball, and this is undoubtedly the most
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: disappointing relative to expectations. Jerry, Justin, and Dan must all
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: go for any real change to occur. I wanted to
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: read the 503 because, first of all, if you've been
- 1:08:48Speaker 2: a Mariner fan for all 50 seasons, hats off to you,
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: ma'am or sir. You deserve to vent. You talk about
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: a fan. No World Series in 50 years. Going on
- 1:08:58Speaker 2: 51 years.
- 1:09:02Speaker 4: I haven't been watching for necessarily that long, but I
- 1:09:06Speaker 4: have been out here for 15, 16 years. And, yeah.
- 1:09:08Speaker 4: I am.
- 1:09:17Speaker 3: Very empathetic.
- 1:09:18Speaker 4: So I'm like, I just wish for them that they
- 1:09:21Speaker 4: could win. I'm not angry. I'm just, I feel bad
- 1:09:25Speaker 4: for them. And that's actually worse.
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: I feel bad for the fans. Yeah. I feel bad
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: for people like that. 503. That's been there for 50 years.
- 1:09:33Speaker 2: I feel bad for them. Same. Our factor fiction. This
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: is the debut tonight. Today, 1135 AM every weekday on
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: this show, your chance to win a thousand dollars from
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: the lucky Eagle casino resort is We're set to go.

- 1:09:51Speaker 1: And the $ 10, 000 grand prize.
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: It's Fact or Fiction.
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: Proudly presented by Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel, where every
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: day feels lucky.

- 1:10:21Speaker 2: pick based on the upcoming college or pro game schedule
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: for that weekend, either against the spread, the points, or
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: the over-under total points scored in the game by both teams.
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: Listeners will have 12 minutes to text FACT to 49451
- 1:10:36Speaker 2: if they agree with our pick or FICTION If they disagree,
- 1:10:41Speaker 2: you can only pick one option per text window. Contests
- 1:10:44Speaker 2: will run through December 11th. Each week, anyone who texted
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: a correct answer will be eligible to win $ 1, 000. One
- 1:10:51Speaker 2: weekly winner will be announced from all eligible entries. The
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: more you play each week, the more your odds increase
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: the chance of winning their weekly prize of $ 1, 000. And
- 1:10:59Speaker 2: at the end of the contest, the person who has
- 1:11:01Speaker 2: the most correct guesses wins. We'll win $ 10, 000 thanks to
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: the Lucky Eagle Casino Resort Play Stay. Win the day.
- 1:11:11Speaker 3: Let's get to your pick.
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: All right. The music gives it away. College football music.
- 1:11:18Speaker 3: I think you gave it away forever.
- 1:11:19Speaker 2: I would be remiss. I would be ignorant. And I
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: would be ignorant of those listeners who have been asking
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: me for months what my first factor pick was going
- 1:11:30Speaker 2: to be if I didn't do what was true to
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: me and what I'm known for. I had, like, the
- 1:11:35Speaker 2: most wins two years ago when I had this show.
- 1:11:38Speaker 2: I had the most wins at the station, but I
- 1:11:40Speaker 2: didn't get the trophy for being the best picker because
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: Anders picked, like, six games and got four of them right,
- 1:11:46Speaker 2: and they counted them for 66%.
- 1:11:47Speaker 3: They did it by percentage. They did a percentage.
- 1:11:51Speaker 2: I had, like, 30-some wins, and he had six. Of course,
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: he picked a lot fewer games than I did. But
- 1:11:56Speaker 2: I rode the army mule to do that, winning the
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: most games. picks on the station two years ago so
- 1:12:04Speaker 2: why not go back to what I'm tried and true
- 1:12:07Speaker 2: the Rockbound Highland home the Army team the pride and
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: dream of every heart and gray they host South Florida
- 1:12:12Speaker 2: at Mikey Stadium in West Point a newly renovated Mikey
- 1:12:14Speaker 2: Stadium I might add that looks great Army's coming up
- 1:12:18Speaker 2: a 59-3 win over Bryant of lower division Bryant where
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: they had 648 total yards a school record 569 yards
- 1:12:27Speaker 2: rushing for Army on Saturday that's good scheduling in week
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: one What was South Florida doing? Well, they were home
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: against Florida International, which sounds like a language school. It's
- 1:12:39Speaker 2: in Miami. And they won only 19-9. The total number
- 1:12:44Speaker 2: of points in Army South Florida is set by Vegas
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: Insiders and the Consensus of Vegas at 48.5 total points.
- 1:12:52Speaker 2: I don't see Army and South Florida combining for 48 points.
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: If you agree with me... to take the under on
- 1:13:00Speaker 2: 48.5 of Army in South Florida, text FACT to 49451.
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: If you don't think so, then you're just... If you
- 1:13:08Speaker 2: like losing your chance at $ 1, 000, text FICTION to 49451.
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: And we'll have another one at 235 with Ian Furness.
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: But Army, South Florida, the under. Total number of points
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: fewer than 48.5. Army's favored by 3.5. I stayed away
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: from that. It's gone up from 1.5 to 3.5. South
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: Florida is in the, if I'm still remembering correctly, the
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: American conference, the same conference that Army is in. So
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: this is a league game, if I'm not mistaken. I
- 1:13:35Speaker 2: don't think South Florida's moved from that conference. They're in Tampa,
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: by the way, if you don't know who the USF Bulls.
- 1:13:42Speaker 2: Once again, Army, South Florida, total number of points fewer
- 1:13:45Speaker 2: than 48 and a half. Yep, Army in the under.
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: My old standby, my very first fact or fiction of
- 1:13:49Speaker 2: the season. Text FACT if you agree with me to 49451.
- 1:13:53Speaker 2: Text FICTION if you disagree. To 49451. Ian will have
- 1:13:57Speaker 2: another one at 235. Jessamyn will pick for us tomorrow
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: at this time at 1135.
- 1:14:01Speaker 3: Well, well, well, well. What shall I do?
- 1:14:05Speaker 2: You go true to your roots at Washington State heading
- 1:14:07Speaker 2: to Kansas State?
- 1:14:09Speaker 3: No, I do not do that. I only go NFL.
- 1:14:12Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:14:12Speaker 7: Yes.
- 1:14:13Speaker 2: Because she works in college football. She doesn't do that.
- 1:14:15Speaker 4: I know I technically could and it probably wouldn't affect me,
- 1:14:18Speaker 4: but it feels immoral to me.
- 1:14:21Speaker 2: Dierks is working on Labor Day. 253 Dierks asks, when
- 1:14:24Speaker 2: a Seahawks player has a serious injury that requires surgery,
- 1:14:27Speaker 2: do the Seahawks have their own surgeons on staff?
- 1:14:30Speaker 3: There's more than a few people who have asked that question.
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: Or do they go to a regular hospital like you
- 1:14:34Speaker 2: and I? Well, they don't go to a regular hospital.
- 1:14:37Speaker 2: They almost all, not always, but almost always, a team
- 1:14:40Speaker 2: physician does the surgery. A team physician orthopedic surgeon is Dr.
- 1:14:45Speaker 2: Ed Calfane, who does most of the operation, a lot
- 1:14:48Speaker 2: of the operation. But if they're tricky... If there's something
- 1:14:52Speaker 2: that is a specialist that's known in that field, they
- 1:14:55Speaker 2: will send Seahawks players to Los Angeles or to Birmingham, Alabama,
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: and Frank Jobe, for instance, an elbow injury, or he's
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: more of baseball fame. But there are doctors in, there's
- 1:15:07Speaker 2: a hand specialist, for instance, in Los Angeles that the
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: day after the NFC championship game, in the NFC championship
- 1:15:14Speaker 2: game last January, Jake Bobo broke his hand. And he
- 1:15:18Speaker 2: went straight to the next morning to Los Angeles, got
- 1:15:20Speaker 2: his hand surgery and had a pin inserted in his hand,
- 1:15:23Speaker 2: and he played the Super Bowl with a pin in
- 1:15:24Speaker 2: his hand that a specialist in Los Angeles did for him.
- 1:15:28Speaker 2: So it is not uncommon for them to go outside
- 1:15:31Speaker 2: the team to have surgeries that aren't within the Seahawks
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: medical staff. But there are multiple surgeons in positions on
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: the staff.
- 1:15:39Speaker 4: But they are not forced to fill out some FMLA
- 1:15:43Speaker 4: or anything.
- 1:15:43Speaker 3: They're covered. Right.
- 1:15:45Speaker 2: There's an insurance policy based on their contract. But the
- 1:15:50Speaker 2: collective bargaining agreement with the Players Association does allow a
- 1:15:54Speaker 2: second opinion that the player can go seek outside of
- 1:15:57Speaker 2: his team, and that's fine.
- 1:16:00Speaker 3: Who was the wide receiver that went to Sweden for treatment?
- 1:16:04Speaker 2: Sidney Rice. Thank you.
- 1:16:05Speaker 3: That's who I was thinking of.
- 1:16:06Speaker 2: For the blood platelet spinning.
- 1:16:08Speaker 4: Yes.
- 1:16:08Speaker 2: Cliff Lee was here with the Mariners in the early
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: 2000s and did the same thing. That's become much more
- 1:16:14Speaker 2: commonplace than it used to be. You used to have
- 1:16:16Speaker 2: to go out of the country to do it, like
- 1:16:17Speaker 2: Sidney Rice did. But now it's done in, there's a
- 1:16:19Speaker 2: place in Walnut Creek that's well-known that a lot of
- 1:16:22Speaker 2: Seahawks players have gone to to do it. Cam Chancellor
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: was doing it. So how it works is it goes
- 1:16:26Speaker 2: into a centrifuge, you draw someone's blood, and you spin
- 1:16:29Speaker 2: it in a centrifuge, and then it concentrates the platelets,
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: and then you inject that concentrated platelet back in, platelet blood,
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: back into the injured area, directly into it. If you
- 1:16:40Speaker 2: have a knee issue, they inject that blood right back
- 1:16:42Speaker 2: into your knee, And it's supposed to accelerate, because of
- 1:16:46Speaker 2: the additional platelets that you spun in a centrifuge, it
- 1:16:49Speaker 2: accelerates the healing powers of platelets. That's what the procedure
- 1:16:53Speaker 2: is supposed to do.
- 1:16:54Speaker 3: I'm not funding this.
- 1:16:55Speaker 2: Well, there's been some debate in the medical community. I'm
- 1:16:58Speaker 2: speaking a little bit out of turn.
- 1:16:59Speaker 3: I'm not a doctor either.
- 1:17:00Speaker 2: But I've covered so many of athletes that have done
- 1:17:02Speaker 2: this that I've investigated it. There has been FDA pushback
- 1:17:06Speaker 2: on whether this is truly effective or not. And there
- 1:17:08Speaker 2: are some people who don't think this really works. But
- 1:17:10Speaker 2: the results, when it does work, has shown that it's
- 1:17:13Speaker 2: really quick turnaround time, which is why athletes like to
- 1:17:15Speaker 2: do it. So that is still a prevalent treatment, yes.
- 1:17:19Speaker 2: Good question.
- 1:17:22Speaker 3: I think we're good here.
- 1:17:23Speaker 2: 253 says accountability is the easy part of baseball. Awareness
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: and hustle, which obviously the M's are missing. Also, with
- 1:17:31Speaker 2: the up and down pitching and lack of hitting, that
- 1:17:33Speaker 2: equals doomsday. And there's one thing I wanted to read
- 1:17:35Speaker 2: from the 206. Dear John and Jerry, meaning John Stanton
- 1:17:39Speaker 2: and Jerry DiPoto, I will gladly give up hot dogs
- 1:17:42Speaker 2: from heaven, bobblehead nights, sing-along firework shows, bark in the park,
- 1:17:45Speaker 2: and Humpty the Salmon being one for his career in
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: the Salmon Derby for playoff baseball. That was well said.
- 1:17:51Speaker 2: All those gimmicks right into one sentence.
- 1:17:54Speaker 3: I don't think that he... Who was it?
- 1:17:57Speaker 4: The 206... What was the area?
- 1:18:01Speaker 3: 206.
- 1:18:02Speaker 4: I don't think the 206... It's completely wrong, but I
- 1:18:05Speaker 4: also don't blame them for having fun.
- 1:18:08Speaker 2: Well, yes, they attracted a different crowd than is the
- 1:18:10Speaker 2: ones that are ticked off about the baseball, for sure.
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: And Furness is here. He's wearing Coug gear. Must be
- 1:18:15Speaker 2: proud of his boys yesterday who held the Huskies. 17
- 1:18:18Speaker 2: with 10 points for most of the game, and then
- 1:18:21Speaker 2: 17 until the very end. He will join us next
- 1:18:23Speaker 2: to tell us what's on his show. If you missed
- 1:18:25Speaker 2: our Fact or Fiction pick, again, Army, South Florida, total
- 1:18:28Speaker 2: number of points fewer than 48.5. Take the under of 48.5,
- 1:18:32Speaker 2: Army and South Florida, the under. Text FACT to 49451
- 1:18:34Speaker 2: or FICTION to 49451. Ian will have another one at 235,
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: and you'll hear from him next on 93.3 KJRFM. On
- 1:18:41Speaker 2: 93.3 KJR FM. Hi, welcome back. Happy Labor Day to you.
- 1:19:07Speaker 2: Thanks for listening. Hopefully you're not working. We're happy to
- 1:19:10Speaker 2: work for you and talk factor fiction and football and
- 1:19:13Speaker 2: the Mariners and Elyse Woodward. If you missed our talk
- 1:19:16Speaker 2: with the voice of the Huskies about the Apple Cup yesterday,
- 1:19:18Speaker 2: go to 933KGR. com, The Greg Bell Show, or the iHeartRadio app.
- 1:19:23Speaker 2: Download that for free on 933KGR. Cougar proud. I'm bracketed
- 1:19:29Speaker 2: by Cougars at the moment.
- 1:19:30Speaker 3: I'm still wearing it.
- 1:19:31Speaker 2: You're kind of a Coug. You paid for it. I did.
- 1:19:33Speaker 2: There's tens of thousands of dollars.
- 1:19:36Speaker 6: You were invested in it.
- 1:19:38Speaker 2: I had my WSU hat on yesterday at Seahawk headquarters.
- 1:19:40Speaker 6: Attaboy.
- 1:19:41Speaker 2: Good job. Anne Furness joining us, the mayor of Maple Valley.
- 1:19:43Speaker 2: How'd you feel? Are you encouraged by your Cougs?
- 1:19:46Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:19:47Speaker 2: Definitely. That defensive stand, they had two defensive stands inside
- 1:19:50Speaker 2: the 10-yard line.
- 1:19:51Speaker 12: I felt like defense has been a massive issue the
- 1:19:53Speaker 12: last couple of years there. And so, yeah, I thought
- 1:19:56Speaker 12: it was a good start. I thought it was a
- 1:19:58Speaker 12: good start for, I mean, listen, the whole moral victory thing,
- 1:20:01Speaker 12: I know most people get upset about that. We had
- 1:20:04Speaker 12: a first-time head coach, first-time play caller as an offensive coordinator,
- 1:20:07Speaker 12: brand-new roster, going against the 17th-ranked team in the country,
- 1:20:11Speaker 12: in their building, hard place to play, and a returning quarterback.
- 1:20:17Speaker 12: who some may think is a Heisman candidate. Experience on,
- 1:20:24Speaker 12: not just experience on their defense. I mean, McLaughlin, I
- 1:20:26Speaker 12: feel like he's been there for a zillion years. Manu,
- 1:20:28Speaker 12: same thing.
- 1:20:29Speaker 6: Like, they've got dudes, and our guys hung around. So, yeah,
- 1:20:31Speaker 6: I thought that was good.
- 1:20:32Speaker 2: That was good. That was just weird. September, whatever. It
- 1:20:35Speaker 2: is weird to watch an Apple Cup in 75-degree sun.
- 1:20:38Speaker 2: It's weird. Yeah, it's strange. It's so weird. But we
- 1:20:41Speaker 2: move on. How do you feel about Pinnock, your quarterback?
- 1:20:44Speaker 2: Not good. Not good.
- 1:20:46Speaker 9: I agree.
- 1:20:48Speaker 6: Not since the days of Kevin Lapina. Have I seen
- 1:20:50Speaker 6: something like that?
- 1:20:50Speaker 2: I thought they might go to– I thought he might
- 1:20:52Speaker 2: go to the backup because it was– what? The starter
- 1:20:55Speaker 2: one decided until very late in fall camp.
- 1:20:57Speaker 6: Yeah. I don't know.
- 1:21:00Speaker 12: I mean, we'll do our Cougar thing coming up later
- 1:21:02Speaker 12: this week with Alex and MK.
- 1:21:05Speaker 6: I think, tomorrow.
- 1:21:07Speaker 3: MK was a beast on the sidelines, by the way.
- 1:21:09Speaker 6: He's always a beast. He's a treat.
- 1:21:12Speaker 12: But I kind of think that in that situation– You're
- 1:21:17Speaker 12: not going to put a guy– you're not going to throw– now,
- 1:21:19Speaker 12: I mean, Duggar's played some football for them.
- 1:21:23Speaker 6: Is it Ebel? How do you say it? What's the
- 1:21:26Speaker 6: other guy's name? Ebelchen or whatever?
- 1:21:28Speaker 2: Ebelchen.
- 1:21:29Speaker 6: The other guy is a freshman, a redshirt freshman, so
- 1:21:32Speaker 6: to speak.
- 1:21:33Speaker 2: I don't even know.
- 1:21:34Speaker 12: Actually, they don't call it redshirt freshman anymore. Second year.
- 1:21:37Speaker 12: He's a second-year player. Second-year freshman.
- 1:21:38Speaker 2: Which is weird.
- 1:21:39Speaker 6: There's dudes playing college football seven years.
- 1:21:41Speaker 12: I say seven years, like the Hatchet Boys, don't they?
- 1:21:43Speaker 6: Like, they're seven years. Like, what are we doing?
- 1:21:45Speaker 12: Anyway, that stuff aside, I can see why they didn't
- 1:21:47Speaker 12: go to make the switch, but he ain't it. I
- 1:21:52Speaker 12: think that's pretty apparent.
- 1:21:53Speaker 6: He ain't it.
- 1:21:53Speaker 9: Really?
- 1:21:54Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:21:54Speaker 2: He's too small. Yeah.
- 1:21:56Speaker 12: And if you're small, you better be really fast. He's
- 1:21:59Speaker 12: okay running the ball. And he doesn't have a big arm. So,
- 1:22:03Speaker 12: I'm trying to figure out what we're doing here.
- 1:22:05Speaker 6: But, Away we go. So, yeah. No, I was encouraged, though.
- 1:22:08Speaker 6: Very encouraged.
- 1:22:08Speaker 2: Defense looked great.
- 1:22:09Speaker 12: Trent Bray, we'll enjoy him while we can as our
- 1:22:12Speaker 12: D coordinator because someone's going to hire him. He's not
- 1:22:14Speaker 12: going to be head coach probably again, the former Oregon
- 1:22:16Speaker 12: State coach. Boy, he's a good defensive coordinator, and we've always.
- 1:22:19Speaker 6: Known that, so. Yeah, it was good.
- 1:22:21Speaker 2: Now they go to Manhattan, Kansas. The Cougs do where
- 1:22:23Speaker 2: Kansas State went 71-3 on Nichols.
- 1:22:26Speaker 12: Yeah, I saw that. They didn't mess around in that game.
- 1:22:31Speaker 12: That wasn't like some of these teams. Rutgers losing. God,
- 1:22:34Speaker 12: what an embarrassment that is for Rutgers. Oh, Big Ten.
- 1:22:39Speaker 12: Big Ten had enough embarrassment this weekend, that's for sure. Man,
- 1:22:41Speaker 12: you're right about that. A fabricated win. How was your
- 1:22:44Speaker 12: Saturday at Mariners? Did you have fun?
- 1:22:47Speaker 4: No.
- 1:22:47Speaker 11: Oh, okay.
- 1:22:48Speaker 2: Well, I had fun because I was with my wife
- 1:22:50Speaker 2: and son, but man. Man, Naylor not running out of
- 1:22:53Speaker 2: ground balls. So you were there. How bad were the boots?
- 1:22:56Speaker 2: Not bad. I've heard it worse. But they were definitely present,
- 1:22:59Speaker 2: and they were loudest when Naylor didn't run out that
- 1:23:01Speaker 2: double play ball.
- 1:23:02Speaker 6: Yeah, people are starting to see that stuff, right?
- 1:23:03Speaker 2: If you're losing the hot dogs from heaven crowd.
- 1:23:05Speaker 6: Ooh, that's bad.
- 1:23:06Speaker 2: It must be bad. What do you got today?
- 1:23:11Speaker 12: We're going to check in with our Molly Whoppers at
- 1:23:14Speaker 12: 1 o'clock, Nathan and Chris. So we'll do that coming
- 1:23:16Speaker 12: up here in about an hour's time. And then Mike
- 1:23:19Speaker 12: Sandel returns on Mondays this year for his weekly visit
- 1:23:22Speaker 12: from the Athletic. Actually, the big thing I want to
- 1:23:24Speaker 12: get to Mike is just the whole change in the
- 1:23:26Speaker 12: Hall of Fame process.
- 1:23:27Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:23:28Speaker 6: And hopefully he's still involved.
- 1:23:29Speaker 2: I was going to ask because they've cut down on
- 1:23:31Speaker 2: not someone from every city anymore.
- 1:23:33Speaker 12: Yeah, so we'll talk to Mike about that. And does
- 1:23:35Speaker 12: it change anything for the Seahawks?
- 1:23:38Speaker 6: I.e.
- 1:23:38Speaker 12: Mike Holmgren at the top of the list, but others
- 1:23:40Speaker 12: as well. So we'll talk about that. Get ready for
- 1:23:42Speaker 12: week one, which is in 40. This is the day
- 1:23:45Speaker 12: before the day before, apparently. That's crazy. Friday, Wednesday opener.
- 1:23:50Speaker 12: Thanks for listening on Labor Day. Appreciate Greg Bell and
- 1:23:53Speaker 12: Jessamyn McIntyre. We'll be with you again tomorrow.
- 1:23:54Speaker 2: Jessamyn will have our Factor Fiction Pick at 1135 tomorrow.
- 1:23:57Speaker 2: I'm heading off to Renton to hear from Mike McDonald
- 1:24:00Speaker 2: about his final comments before. Wednesday. They're off tomorrow for
- 1:24:04Speaker 2: media availability. Ian's up next from 12 to 3 on
- 1:24:06Speaker 2: 93.3 KJRFM.
