- 0:31chess is already saying good morning, good morning, chazz biz, Hi,
- 0:34everybody getting up in the in the chat. Yeah, chet's active. Welcome
- 0:41to trek Ast everybody, the Galaxy's Most Unpredictable Star Trek podcast. Allegedly allegedly,
- 0:48that's right, there's been a lot of allegedly is in the news today,
- 0:51yeah, last week. So yeah, tells tell us what we're doing
- 0:54here, Daniel. Yeah, So we're doing a full show because kind of
- 0:59a lot going on. Our main topic is going to be sky Dance Media
- 1:03has put in a fol bid to purchase Paramount and that could mean a lot
- 1:08for Star Trek. So we'll give you a little bit about what's going on
- 1:11there. We're gonna talk a little bit about who sky Dance Media is.
- 1:17You've you may not know the name, but for sure you've seen some of
- 1:19their movies. And then we will also talk about what we think that can
- 1:23mean for Star Trek. But you know, before we get going, Yeah,
- 1:29how's your week, bend Man, doing good, doing good? You
- 1:33know, I'm glad we can do these supplementals, you know, something to
- 1:37yeah to at the end of the week. I'm sure everybody appreciates that.
- 1:40Listen to the podcast whenever we can, you know, when we're on this
- 1:44every other week's schedule, whenever we can, Yeah, an episode and so
- 1:48yeah, it's fun to do. Yeah, absolutely absolutely. But you know,
- 1:52we should probably get to the news. We've got some Star Trek news.
- 1:56It. Let's together Star Trek news. All right, So our first
- 2:02news story. It's kind of sad for those of you who have not heard
- 2:07yet. According to star Trek dot com, Star Trek actor Gary Graham has
- 2:15passed away. He was savall in Star Trek Enterprise. He was the ambassador.
- 2:23He passed away on the twenty second, seventy three years old. We
- 2:27do not know the cause of death right now, but yeah, he passed
- 2:30away. He was very integral to the enterprise show. And yeah, that's
- 2:38it's sad man, Yeah, it is. It is. Yeah, he
- 2:39was a big part of enterprise. You know, he was he was there
- 2:43kind of from from the beginning in Star Trek Enterprise. You know, he
- 2:47played, like I said, they played the Buckman ambassador who you know,
- 2:51at first was you know, very much against Starfleet and their mission to you
- 2:55know, kind of spread their wings and you know, go out further.
- 3:00And then towards the end he was you know very much an ally of Archer
- 3:04and the Enterprise crew. Yeah. Yeah, brought up really good you know
- 3:08he did. I think it brought a lot of a lot to that character,
- 3:12and you know, he will be missed. He was. Also he
- 3:17was in that show Alienation. Yeah. Yeah, a lot of you know,
- 3:23anybody that's our age or maybe younger probably doesn't even know what that show
- 3:27was. And I had to look it up a little bit. But it
- 3:30can you kind of help me refresh everybody's memory about did you ever watch that
- 3:35show? So I, you know vaguely, like I have vague memories of
- 3:42it. You know, Dan has mentioned it before. Yeah, from what
- 3:47I understand, And again, I never watched the show. I just read
- 3:51a little tiny bit about it. Basically human kinds, integration of aliens into
- 3:58their culture, and really uh sort of focused on the relationship between his character
- 4:03and another somebody from the other planet. Again, I don't know hardly anything
- 4:08about this. Yeah, there is up in the top right, and in
- 4:13this show, these two played like law enforcement officers of some kind, didn't
- 4:18they Again, I don't know a lot of Yeah, yeah, it was
- 4:21a it was a cop show kind of like okay, okay, but yeah
- 4:28yeah, so yeah, it's sad that he's gone, but that that's where
- 4:33we're uh. Next new story comes to us from Deadline dot Com and Star
- 4:41trek Icon. Jonathan Freaks is set to direct a new TV show that is
- 4:47not Star trek related. He is going to be He's signed on to direct
- 4:53the TV adaptation of Deathlands, which is a novel series and it will uh
- 5:01novel series that was created by I guess a crypto pioneer some like bitcoin pioneer
- 5:08guy. Okay, Jef Garzik. I don't I don't know a lot about
- 5:14cryptos. I don't know who this guy is. But I never heard that.
- 5:16Yeah, yeah, but I guess death Lands is a is a is
- 5:20a pretty big book series. The show is expected to be a ten part
- 5:26Oh, it's a ten part novel series, so we don't know how many
- 5:29episodes of the show will be. But Jonathan Franks is on board to direct
- 5:31him. Well, he's a he's a smart guy. He's obviously good behind
- 5:36the camera. Yeah, he got a lot of projects under his belt.
- 5:41Yeah, even non Star Trek projects. So yeah, yeah, look forward
- 5:44to that. Yeah yeah, I couldn't find much about death Lands. So
- 5:49and then, also speaking of Jonathan Brinks from trekmovie dot com, apparently Jonathan
- 5:56Banks did a Reddit ama earlier this and he was talking about the Reker maneuver.
- 6:04So somebody said, you know who came up with the Reker maneuver,
- 6:10to which you responded, that happened by chance when we first used ten forward,
- 6:15the chairs were low enough to step in, and frankly, it was
- 6:17kind of an asshole move. I'm glad I've found life as a meme.
- 6:23That's funny. Yeah, I thought that was pretty hilarious. Reker maneuver officially
- 6:29an asshole move, right, Yeah, now that's got to be a little
- 6:32bit of satire because I've heard a couple of different stories over the years,
- 6:39and I heard the reason why he does that the little leg over the chair
- 6:43thing too, is uh, because of a back issue. Yeah I've heard
- 6:46that too. Yeah, yeah, but why you couldn't just walk up to
- 6:51a chair and then sit down to it, right, you know, you
- 6:56know whatever? Yeah, yeah, I mean it's because I'm such part of
- 7:00you know, star trek lore that they they made fun of it in the
- 7:05crossover episode Lower Decks Sting World Crossover. Right, yeah, yeah, it
- 7:14is definitely a thing. So it's funny, you know, it's whatever.
- 7:19Man, it's cool. I like, I kind of like it. It's
- 7:24like the Joker, We don't it has so many possible origins and who cares?
- 7:28Right? Yeah, exactly exactly. All right, Well that's all the
- 7:33news stories. Should we get to the main topic. I guess we're moving
- 7:36along quick. Yeah, let's let's talk about that. Okay, fun will
- 7:41now come out, all right, So our main topic. Deadline is reporting
- 7:50earlier this week that sun Dance, our Skydance Media, which is a film
- 7:58studio or a film production company, kind of has put in a bid to
- 8:05buy out the controlling stock interest in Paramount Global. It's kind of complicated.
- 8:13So basically, a lady named Sherry Redstone has a company called National Amusements.
- 8:22Through that company, she owns the controlling interest of Paramount. It's something like
- 8:30eighty percent of the voting shares in Paramount. So through all those hoops,
- 8:37Skydance Media is like, okay, we want to buy Paramount so that's how
- 8:41they would do it. So that's where we're at with everything. We have
- 8:48not heard that a deal is done. This also flies in the face of
- 8:50about a month ago we were getting reports that Paramount had met with Warner Brothers
- 8:58Discovery to do emerge between those two companies. And then this also flies in
- 9:03the phase of months earlier we had heard that Apple TV was talking about some
- 9:09sort of streaming merger with Paramount, not necessarily a merger of the companies,
- 9:13but a merger of those two streaming properties into one major streamer. Right,
- 9:18so clearly Paramount is looking to make some moves in some way. There is
- 9:26some buzz about what this means for Paramount recently, according to varieties. So
- 9:33a couple of days later, the Paramount Global CEO basically told the entire staff
- 9:39get back to work. Stop focusing on losing your jobs, because typically when
- 9:43a merger happens, you're gonna lose your job. You know, there is
- 9:48gonna be layoffs. That tends to be what happens when these mergers happen,
- 9:52right, they get rid of redundancies and all that. So yeah, he's
- 9:56just basically, hey, get back to work. Stop updating your Lincoln LinkedIn
- 10:01I'm wanting to get the same email from you. So yeah, yeah,
- 10:03yeah, yeah, but you know that that that sucks, and you know
- 10:11it makes sense. You know, people are well, what are we gonna
- 10:13do? What's going on? There's nothing official. We don't know. Are
- 10:18they going to go with Apple? Are they gonna go with Warner Brothers Discovery?
- 10:22Are they going to go with sky Dance? For those of you wondering
- 10:26who the hell is sky Dance? I can give you some of the movies
- 10:31they have done. Some of the bigger name movies they have done in the
- 10:35past. They did that True Grit remake that everybody seemed to love. They
- 10:41also did World war Z. Some other films they have done is they did
- 10:46the Jack Reacher films and the Jack Ryan Shadow Recruit. They've also done a
- 10:54few I would say, less than stellar films like Baywatch or G I.
- 10:58Joe Retaliation or Snake Eyes. What come on? No, man? Uh.
- 11:07They do have experience with Star Trek too, though. They brought us
- 11:09a Star Trek Beyond and Star Trek into Darkness. Yep, so that would
- 11:15be who ends up controlling Star Trek. Yeah, yeah, that's another question
- 11:20that I think a lot of people are asking, is you know, what's
- 11:24how is this going to affect Star Trek. I think that's the biggest question
- 11:26that you know a lot of people are asking, at least people that listen
- 11:31to this podcast are asking that. And you know, they they've already set
- 11:35a precedent because they could. What Paramount could do is they could license out
- 11:39you know, and we've talked about this before, and this is kind of
- 11:43our fear, is they could license out different franchises, new Track, old
- 11:48Track, new movies, old movies, new upcoming movies, and they can
- 11:50all go to different and they've they've already done this with Prodigy, right they
- 11:56made Prodigy and now they licensed it with Netflix. And you know, and
- 12:01Netflix obviously has a ton more subscribers. I just looked up. Paramount Plus
- 12:11currently as of last year, has sixty three point four million subscribers. I
- 12:16think Netflix had something like six times at many hundreds of millions of subscribers.
- 12:26And so, you know, there there's a lot of money to be made.
- 12:28But the problem with that is where do you find it? You know,
- 12:33do I have to have a Do I have to have Netflix to watch
- 12:35Prodigy and Paramount Plus to watch Strange New Worlds and HBO to watch the movies,
- 12:41which right now, that's the case. Yeah, yeah, so you
- 12:46know, do I have to have a you know, are they going to
- 12:48sell off you know, next Gen D Space nine and Voyager now to another
- 12:52streaming platform right right? And that that could be very very possible. We
- 12:58don't really know. I did see. I don't know if you know who
- 13:03Robert meyer Burnett is. He's a he's a film commentator. He's also a
- 13:07former film producer and kind of like a Hollywood insider type kind of guy.
- 13:13He was talking about this potential merger earlier this week and he seemed to be
- 13:20very very excited about it. That the CEO of sky Dance has been known
- 13:26for finding people who love their properties and putting them in charge, so so
- 13:33that could be a good thing. Apparently that's why for Star Trek, beyond
- 13:41the you know what, people at least most people seem to think that it's
- 13:43a it's a better movie than than Into Darkness, Into Darkness, they went
- 13:50and got the director who did have a history of loving that movie and put
- 13:54him in so loving Star Trek. I forget his name. The guy from
- 14:00Fast and the various that everyone was like, I don't know about this guy,
- 14:01but right right, yeah, yeah, so so we could see potentially
- 14:09people who actually love it as opposed to people who see it as I don't
- 14:13know, a money machine, you know. Yeah, yeah, well you
- 14:20know, speaking of money machine. Yeah, if we come across this problem
- 14:26of what we just talked about about, you know, things going to different
- 14:31streaming services, yeah, it's going to be an invitation for piracy. It's
- 14:37gonna be an invitation for password sharing, and it's gonna be an invitation for
- 14:41uh, you know, going and downloading this the stuff illegally, and it's
- 14:46it's going to be you know, and I'm not advocating that. Whatever you
- 14:50do. You know, if you want to save some money, do not
- 14:54get with your friends and share an account on Paramount Plus. No. If
- 14:58you want to see a show that you don't have access to, you know,
- 15:01do not get a VPN and and stream it illegally over several different platforms
- 15:07that are available, right, do not do that, No, because you
- 15:11know, like I said, these these these companies are sending a message of
- 15:16we're going to expand and we're going to make it more difficult for you to
- 15:22watch your favorite, even something encompassing like Star Trek. You can't even watch
- 15:26all of Star Trek in one place, you know, at least with Star
- 15:28Wars, there's one place you can watch all of Star Wars. Everything that
- 15:33Star Wars has ever put out, including the Christmas special, is all in
- 15:35one place. And now Star Trek, which is seen by a lot of
- 15:41people, is sort of the other side of that, that sci fi pin
- 15:43point. There is not one place where you can watch Star Trek. So
- 15:48Andrew yeah, Andrew over on our Instagram Live says he really wishes they would
- 15:54remaster a Voyager, you know, yeah, yeah that and DS nine and
- 16:03yeah, that would be great. But those three tent poles next Gen yeah,
- 16:07DA nine, Yeah, Voyager, that would be great. Is next
- 16:14Gen? Do they stream Next Gen remastered? I don't think it's remastered.
- 16:19Okay, original series. They've done a they've done a job of remastering it.
- 16:26There are all the visual effect shots are all redone for the most part.
- 16:32Mh. And it's it's kind of a coin flip whether it draws you
- 16:37in or sort of like it pulls you out of the story right. Sometimes
- 16:41you just see it seamless. Other times it's like, that's really obvious.
- 16:45That's not how it was originally. Yeah, yeah, for sure, for
- 16:48sure. Yeah. You know, they put a filter over it and they
- 16:52take the computer and they do things, and I'm like, I wish that's
- 16:56good. I wish they could do that with some of the acting that William
- 16:59Shanner did, but the computer technology hasn't quite reached that level yet. Yeah.
- 17:04Also, in the Deadline article about Paramount and Skydance, it does say
- 17:11there are plans that if they do merge the companies, there will be layoffs,
- 17:15and so yeah, that that could be some of the reasons why staffers
- 17:21are a little bit nervous because that's coming, you know that that Yeah,
- 17:27yeah, so yeah, you can't really blame them for updating their LinkedIn Yeah
- 17:33yeah, yeah. Okay, Let's say let's say there is a merger,
- 17:41not necessarily between these two companies, but somebody buys out Paramount. What do
- 17:47you want to see out of a new owner for Star Trek? What are
- 17:49you what are you hoping for? What everybody wants to see? Just more
- 17:53and better content and a centralized location to watch it all, you know,
- 17:59I mean I understand that I can't watch Star Trek and Star Wars on the
- 18:02same platform. There's no reason why I can't watch all of Star Trek on
- 18:04the same platform. So just keep making content. Stop you know, it's
- 18:07when I it's when uh like YouTubers, YouTubers. I see YouTubers trying to
- 18:14find out how can I make you know, people watch my channel, how
- 18:17can I make people watch my channel? Make better content. Stop worrying about
- 18:21all the fluff, and just make my content. So that's what the key
- 18:25is. Keep making good content. And yeah, they've done a good job
- 18:27with Star Trek as of late of making good content. Keep that up,
- 18:33you know, listen to what the people are saying. Listen to the Star
- 18:36Trek fans. They're like, for the most part, they like what's going
- 18:38on. You know, Discovery excluded, but yeah, you know content,
- 18:45Yeah, yeah, I I don't know if I want more Star Trek as
- 18:52much as I want focused Star Trek. Okay, Like, even if we're
- 18:57only down to one's series, right one, let's say animated in one live
- 19:03action, great, but make that the best you can make it, right,
- 19:07Yeah, focus on the storylines, focus on the characters, focus on
- 19:12where you want us to get to. I think that would be great.
- 19:18I think if they're not going to give us Star Trek legacy, which you
- 19:21know, there have been reports that even the actors now are saying, well,
- 19:23if the fans want it, I guess what will happen? Which what
- 19:27does that mean? Right? Because the fans have been saying it for what
- 19:32a year now, like it's yeah, you know, they haven't brought it
- 19:36up, and so who knows, and and Terry Mentallis hasn't signed on to
- 19:41do anything else yet, so we don't know. And you know, like
- 19:45you said before, that could that that should be a sign? Yeah?
- 19:51Absolutely, you know, yeah, you know if Terry mattall what you were
- 19:56saying before a few weeks ago, Yeah, if Terry mettell It's not signed
- 20:00up to do another project, then maybe that means there's a Star Trek project
- 20:03that they're sort of talking about or working on, yeah, behind the scenes
- 20:07that we don't know about yet. Chasmin says they need to do late leadership.
- 20:11Yeah, I just put that out. Yeah, Yeah, I don't
- 20:15know, man, like I think you could focus it. I don't think
- 20:21you need to keep throwing hundreds of millions of dollars at Star Trek in hopes
- 20:26of you know, because the franchise itself, honestly, it's not as big
- 20:30as it was ten years ago, right by everything we've done. I mean,
- 20:36they've had to stop doing the toys they've had. They're not doing all
- 20:40the marketing and merchandise opportunities that they could, right, So there is some
- 20:48sort of disconnect there that that needs to be looked at and fixed. Right
- 20:52Well, I think also when you have a show that's exclusive to a streaming
- 21:02service, you are you're cutting off a large part of the population, right,
- 21:11Not everybody has Paramount plus, okay, And what made Star Trek accessible
- 21:15to everybody in decades past was it was syndicated on over the AIRTV, but
- 21:22also they were putting out movies in the theater. You know, two thousand
- 21:27and nine when Star Trek came out, the JJ Abrams movie came out.
- 21:30That revitalized the franchise a bit, quite a bit. Yeah, yeah,
- 21:34but we had never seen Star Trek. Went and saw Star Trek because it
- 21:40was in the theater. It was accessible, right, So make it accessible,
- 21:45you know, maybe take a risk and put another movie out there,
- 21:48and I know there's been talks of one, but don't make it on streaming
- 21:52because not everybody has paramount plus, right, you know I'm thinking about so
- 21:59I know that I'm the guy who follows wrestling on this show. But recently
- 22:04the ww announced they did a big sponsorship or a big broadcast deal with Netflix,
- 22:11and people notice of their three market or three broadcast deals recently, there
- 22:19are three different buckets. Right. They made a deal with with CW to
- 22:26broadcast their their kind of like development show. They did a deal with USA
- 22:33Network to do SmackDown, and then now starting in twenty twenty five, Netflix
- 22:38will be airing raw. So they have now done it where you can get
- 22:45wrestling anywhere either over the air, you know, antenna's cable and streaming.
- 22:52Right, So maybe that's kind of a model that maybe Star Trek should look
- 23:00into. Right. You you can you can send out your you're already done
- 23:04shows right your your back catalog if you will, So you'r DS nine's your
- 23:10enterprise. And yeah, it's gonna suck for US fans if they're all on
- 23:14different streamers, right, but that's gonna get you more eyes because now you've
- 23:19got more hooks in the water, right, So you send those out as
- 23:25you're streaming buckets, right, Yeah, you do your new show maybe you
- 23:30know, maybe you put it on CBS or maybe you put it on you
- 23:33know, one of their their cable channels, something like that, and then
- 23:37you do the animated show, maybe on the cable channel. So at least
- 23:40that way you're put you're reaching out to the broadest possible audience everywhere that they're
- 23:45at, you know, and maybe that yeah, you find it right,
- 23:51Yeah, so yeah, and maybe that's what you do to help grow it.
- 23:55Yeah, I just you know, it's a combination of what you want,
- 23:57what I want, you know, more yeah, more Star Trek and
- 24:00better quality Star Trek. Oh, I don't. I don't necessarily want that.
- 24:03I just think if I was a studiohead, and how do I maximize
- 24:07my potential of gaining an audience. That's why I do it, you know.
- 24:11Yeah, No, it makes sense, makes perfect sense. Yeah,
- 24:14it'll be a nightmare for us trying to like, oh I want to watch
- 24:18Voyager do it? Well, I need to go sign up for Hulu now,
- 24:21you know, like you know, if that happens, honestly, yeah,
- 24:23physical media, yeah, for sure, for sure. I mean I've
- 24:27got all the movies, every single one of them, if most of them
- 24:32on blu ray, Okay, I've got I don't have all the series on
- 24:37on physical media. Do you do you have Star Trek Caravan of Courage.
- 24:42I do not. Oh yeah, that's a good one. I do not.
- 24:47I don't even know what that is. I just merged it with the
- 24:49e Walk movie watch movies called Caravan of Courage. I feel like I just
- 24:56gave myself a NERD alert, warning warning alert, nerd alert. Yeah,
- 25:03yeah, that's great. I'd like a physical copy of the Star Wars Chris
- 25:10special. Oh yeah, yeah, most comic cons or conventions you can,
- 25:15you can find that. Yeah. You have to be careful though, because
- 25:18I heard I heard that George Lucas and Disney Studios they send out, uh,
- 25:25who are the Jedi hunters in the new Oh oh yeah, the the
- 25:29Inquisition, the inquisitors. Yeah, they exquisitors to find everybody who tries to
- 25:34collect those chasm as. You'll watch the e Waka Star Trek crossover. Heck
- 25:41yeah, yeah, yeah, that'll be some merchandising. Oh for sure,
- 25:45for sure, that'd be great. Yeah, but you know, I don't
- 25:52know, man. I think I would imagine within six to nine months we
- 25:57will have a buyer for Paramount. They are on those streets trying to sell
- 26:02that studio, and I think within sixty nine months we will hear something.
- 26:07Yeah, you're you're probably right. I you know, if you really want
- 26:11to, if you're really interested in this, you want to get a good
- 26:14gauge of what's going on as far as the strengthen you know, watch their
- 26:17stock and you see what the what the shareholders are saying, because that's that's
- 26:21gonna indicate what direction they're going. And it's going to indicate, you know,
- 26:26not only the direction they're going, but uh where where the shareholders will
- 26:32tell you where they want to go right right, obviously to make money.
- 26:36But you know, if you if you're a company that owns a substantial holding
- 26:41in one of those companies, you have a voice on what direction you want
- 26:44that to go to. So m hm h. Andrew is also saying,
- 26:48I'm not sure what you guys mean that everything isn't on Paramount. I see
- 26:52all the movies and shows on Paramount, So I don't know where he's from.
- 26:57It kind of depends on what in the world you are. What was
- 27:02it last month they got rid of all the old classic movies, the the
- 27:07tos movies, they went to HBO or Max and and then also Netflix has
- 27:15got Prodigy now, so they have been starting breaking it up at least in
- 27:22the US. Andrew but yeah, yep, yeah, that that's where we're
- 27:27at. Uh. He also does say that they need a good time travel
- 27:30show. I mean, sure, why not. We We've got the time
- 27:38agency right that they they've kind of alluded to. Yeah, that's true.
- 27:42Yeah, you could do something there that could be fun too, like if
- 27:47you did it as almost like a anthology show where the agents go back in
- 27:53time and maybe for a season they're in one era of Star Trek, right,
- 27:59so you like a temporal investor like Star Trek Temporal Investigations. Yeah.
- 28:03Yeah, yeah, but like maybe one season is cos the next season is
- 28:06DS nine, like you know, like that would be cool. That would
- 28:10be cool. That would be you know, something neat you know, it
- 28:14just it just kind of depends, but yeah, I would definitely want to
- 28:19that. Yeah. Yeah, that's that's definitely stuff I'd like to see.
- 28:23But uh yeah, So basically the main topic wise, there's not much more.
- 28:29We are we are hoping for the best for Star Trek, of course,
- 28:33but we'll kind of see. You know, I'm giving a ballpark a
- 28:37six to nine months, we'll hear something that's not a guarantee, yeah,
- 28:41I hope. So. Yeah, and it's an ever changing story too.
- 28:45Yeah, like you said earlier, you know, a month ago it was
- 28:48this, and three months ago it was that. So I mean, it
- 28:51honestly could be sooner just because, uh, the Super Bowl is going to
- 28:56be streaming on Paramount Plus this year, right, so going to be on
- 29:00Paramount, which would make it far more attractive. Right, So potentially maybe
- 29:06you know, a few weeks we hear something or a few days, so
- 29:10we don't know, Yeah, but we will definitely keep an eye on it
- 29:12and we'll keep you guys posted on what happened. Or for those of you
- 29:17who don't know, the Super Bowl is a contest, yes, for the
- 29:22National Football League, between the a f C and the NFC. Uh,
- 29:27and it's to determine who is the world champion between those two conferences in the
- 29:33game of American football. That's the one would be oblong shaped the NFC.
- 29:38That's the no funions comrade. It's it's kind of like that. Yeah,
- 29:44yeah, yeah, all right, that's not like onions, but you know,
- 29:48not everyone does. I just want to say, go lines. They're
- 29:51going to the super Bowl this year. That's right, that's right. Yeah,
- 29:55yes, yeah, their battle cries me out. Yes, yuh.
- 30:00All right, Well let's get to listener feedback because we already got people waiting
- 30:07listener feedback. Uh. So with listener feedback, is now time for Chaz
- 30:12Is to show up. So there he is. What's up, Chaz biz?
- 30:17Hello? How are you doing? Good? Are you doing? I'm
- 30:21pretty good. I take my AirPod out real quick. Okay, I'm listening
- 30:27to you guys on the phone, and then I have the delay. Yeah
- 30:33yeah, oh gotcha. Yeah. So what do you think about those mergers
- 30:37or sales talk? Well, the one people want out then yeah, leave
- 30:45yeah, because you're not going to add anything to paramount. So sell it
- 30:49to somebody that actually wants to produce something. You know. That quote should
- 30:56be sent to uh the studio execs. If you want out, Yes,
- 31:00that's like I like that. If you're just an investor and you don't care
- 31:03about uh, producing stuff, get out absolutely your production company. That's what
- 31:12you do, yeah, make content. And the other one sounds like just
- 31:17the investor, you know, park the money there and hopefully gain something.
- 31:22Yeah, you have any predictions as far as uh what Usually when they merged,
- 31:29you know, they lay off people. And that's that's the bad thing,
- 31:33right because like an Xbox and Activision they just laid off what nineteen hundred
- 31:38people this week? And yeah, Microsoft is the largest company in the world
- 31:45right now. Yeah, and are they valued at three trillion or something ridiculous
- 31:51right now? Right? Yeah, you know that's another thing you you brought
- 31:55up that a lot of people don't think about. This is affecting real people,
- 31:59you know, very real way. They're livelihoods. There are people that
- 32:02you know, these nineteen hundred people and from different they're not Yeah, they're
- 32:07not like, oh that's the makeup artists and the film set designer and all
- 32:12that. It's people like who work in accounting and yeah, receiving and stuff
- 32:17like that. And the strikes have killed them too because nobody's working, right
- 32:24they got you know, makeup, costume, all the guys that make the
- 32:28sets, like a ton of people didn't make money for about six months.
- 32:32Yeah, they had to find jobs elsewhere. And yeah, it's the effect
- 32:37that the business. So I don't think anybody really gained during that strike.
- 32:43I think it really hurt, you know it kind of yeah at the moment.
- 32:46So yeah, plus, you know we got and they did that strike
- 32:52the worst possible time because that was the worst box office year Hollywood's had in
- 32:58years because Disney what they didn't have one billion dollar dollar movie and yeah,
- 33:06the first time in like I think eleven years or something like that. Yeah,
- 33:08yeah, yeah. As you go back twenty nineteen, you see all
- 33:12their Marvel movies, they all hit, yeah, big time. It's it's
- 33:16been a well, even in post pandemic, the box office has really changed.
- 33:23Right, It's not what hits and what people come out for is very
- 33:29different, right, Like what was it Top Gun Maverick. People did not
- 33:32expect it to hit and it did. It was big Yeah, yeah,
- 33:37yeah, okay movie, you know, and then there's movie. There's some
- 33:43great movies. Like personally, I thought the Blue Beatle movie was really good.
- 33:46I didn't think it was like a billion dollar movie, but nobody went
- 33:51to that thing and and it was a good movie. It was. Yeah,
- 33:55So you can't just say, well, we got to make better movies.
- 33:59That's not just it. Like there's an X factor quantified like superhero fatigue
- 34:05and I don't know if it's that, man. I think it's because like
- 34:07you look at Guardians of the Galaxy three, that thing did Gangbusters and that's
- 34:13also superhero movie that would in twenty nineteen, that would have made a billion
- 34:16dollars and I think it was pretty close it It was like nine hundred,
- 34:21yeah, but so like in twenty nineteen that maybe would easily surpassed a billion
- 34:28dollars. I don't know what's going on with Marvel. I don't know if
- 34:30the TV shows have affected it. I don't know if too many movies in
- 34:35one year. I think Marvel it's it's it's lost its specialness and that there's
- 34:40so much of it. Yeah, so then then you don't need to catch
- 34:45up with all of it. And then there's also a lot of like loose
- 34:49thread plot lines, like you've got the Eternal sitting in the middle of the
- 34:52ocean that we haven't talked about since you know, right, yeah, yeah,
- 34:58yeah yeah, Or what's his name? Was introduced to the black Sword
- 35:01and what happened to that Harry Styles showed up in this was Thanis's brother,
- 35:07right, all these things that are like are we ever going to talk about
- 35:10that again? You maybe do you think that maybe the studios, say,
- 35:17you know, Paramount or whoever produces Star Trek Has are looking at some of
- 35:22these franchises and they're a little wary about making more of the same thing.
- 35:28You know, they they see they see, you know, the Marvel universe
- 35:30sort of at least in my eyes, sort of declining a little bit.
- 35:35Star Warss like a little bit. I think I think it's a couple of
- 35:39different things. I think the the budgets of movies is far too large.
- 35:47It's far too large. Five million dollars at least, there's estimates that it
- 35:53went up to three hundred three hundred. Was the TV show Oh yeah,
- 36:00awful, Yeah you have so and that was a fun show for eight right,
- 36:08right, Yeah, they're kind of a million dollars, so that thing
- 36:10should be crisp. Yeah, they need to figure out ways to cut the
- 36:16costs of these productions. Part of part of the other thing though to think
- 36:21about, is you know, you would mentioned like, oh, maybe Marvel
- 36:25the studios think their franchises are too overused, right. The problem with that
- 36:30is if you're gonna go sync in hundreds of millions of dollars, are you
- 36:36going to put that bet on something with no history, no no legacy,
- 36:42or or something that look seventy five percent of the films make money. We
- 36:46have merchandising rights. If we don't make money, and as a history of
- 36:51a fan base of this large, you're gonna put your money more secure,
- 36:54allegedly, right with what looks better. Right, You're not gonna just gamble
- 37:00it away. So like you get it. You're right, you know,
- 37:04I get it. Because the other thing, too, is you have to
- 37:06think about studio heads. Do not look at these like a great treasure like
- 37:12we look at it as fans. It is to them it is Well,
- 37:15we made a Star Wars movie and they didn't come not Yeah, that's why
- 37:20we haven't seen a Star Wars movie. Right, Well, they're not coming
- 37:23to Star Wars anymore. Well, no, you made a crappy one and
- 37:27it's been a minute. Yeah, so and you know it's been They keep
- 37:31on announcing Star Wars movies, but they all get scrapped, right right.
- 37:37I don't even know how many it's been scrapped. Like directs. We allegedly
- 37:39have four Star Trek movies in the pipeline right now. Yeah, well we
- 37:44see any of them, you know, we'll probably see thirty one allegedly.
- 37:47I mean that's supposed to start filming, and if it hasn't, right way,
- 37:52I believe it is when it goes into production. They hired like the
- 37:54cast and carery and start film. I honestly won't believe it until it's on
- 38:00stream on Paramount Bluff ready to go. Yeah, well they have how like
- 38:04Bury movie. Netflix filmed and they just candid. I mean they filmed the
- 38:08whole movie and they're like, na, that looks too bad, so they
- 38:12just yeah, yeah, that Jake Gillenhall Roadhouse remake that him and the director
- 38:20were like this needs to go to theaters and uh and Prime said no,
- 38:23Amazon Prime is like no, we're gonna just put it on Prime forget about
- 38:27it. Yeah yeah, I mean I saw the trailer. It looks like
- 38:31it should be in theaters. To me, Yeah, I don't think it's
- 38:36the best movie ever, but it looks fun. You know, well they
- 38:37get use the original, but everybody loved it. Right now, there's no
- 38:44competition. What do you mean by that, like in the theaters, because
- 38:50there's no lot like genuine movies out right now. Yeah, not good movies
- 38:55right now. Well, you're still playing Walk up from December, You're still
- 39:00playing you know. Yeah, I do kind of see Chanz business point because
- 39:04ye, anything in the theater right now that I want to watch that,
- 39:07Okay, that might be a marketing thing, because that's part of it.
- 39:12Yeah, because I haven't been bombarded with anything that I'm like, oh,
- 39:15I've seen a commercial for that. I want to go see it in the
- 39:16theaters, you know. And that's another you know, we're just talking about
- 39:21Roadhouse. I hear about a movie and then there's confusion for me, is
- 39:24this is this out already? Is it in the theaters? Is it coming
- 39:28out? Is it something came out a year ago? Who knows? Right?
- 39:30What's just throw it out in the theater. It cares well, like
- 39:34I just saw a movie last weekend. I saw is S the International Space
- 39:37Team? How was that one? It is really good? Okay, yeah,
- 39:42it was really really good. And how do you have to go to
- 39:45theaters to say that was in the movie theater? Okay, in the movie
- 39:47theaters? Yeah. Yeah. I'll probably see one hundred movies in the theater
- 39:52a year, so oh wow, okay, Son, I've seen probably two
- 39:57movies a week, so usually it's old movie and I watch a new movie.
- 40:01Last week, I watched Galaxy Quest. Oh nice, guys, so
- 40:06nice, and I have that theater was packed and was yeah awesome. Do
- 40:14you have like one of those movie past things? Uh no, I don't,
- 40:19but I go on cheap Night okay, okay, they have cheap nights
- 40:22on Tuesday Wednesdays sometimes okay, yeah, And so for six dollars a person,
- 40:30and then I have a refillable cups that's two dollars nice, twelve dollars,
- 40:35you know, fourteen dollars. Yeah, maybe for two of us I
- 40:39have in your candy. So we have regal movie theaters where I live,
- 40:45and they've got for I think it's like twenty three bucks a month, you
- 40:50get an unlimited card and you can go to the movies as much as you
- 40:52want. Yeah. No, yeah, so that's what I do. I
- 40:55just have one of those probably about five different theaters. So oh okay.
- 41:00Because I like, I have all the apps on my phone, I like,
- 41:04oh nice, what's what's out there? And yeah, I saw the
- 41:07Color Purple last week? So oh okay, all right, you know there's
- 41:12the musical one, not the Spilberg one. But yeah, okay, okay,
- 41:17that's awesome. Liked it, liked it. Yeah, I just watched
- 41:21Mission Impossible, good record. Yeah, that was good. That's a Paramount
- 41:25movie right there. Yeah, I watched them. It just came out a
- 41:29couple of days ago. Paramount. Was it twenty eighteen when it came out
- 41:31or twenty nineteen. That's also a sky Dance movie. Yeah, yeah,
- 41:36great, maybe, but I think I heard because it said part one and
- 41:42people didn't see it or what because they were banking on that movie last year.
- 41:45And I don't know if that's what hurt it. It might be that
- 41:47it's like the eighth one or seventy one. But it was good. It
- 41:52was actually there were several problems with one. Dead Reckoning is the one where
- 41:54a couple of years it was supposed to originally come out in like I think
- 41:58twenty twenty one. Yes, yeah, COVID stuff. But that was the
- 42:00one where Tom krit Cruise made the news for having those like expletive ridden laden
- 42:07on set about not following COVID procedure. Yeah, and several crew members quit
- 42:14over it because they're like Tom Cruise is crazy, and I'm sure that Tom
- 42:17Cruise is absolutely Yeah, that was right. Then if somebody had COVID,
- 42:28they had to shut down everything, right, and you know, everybody had
- 42:31to go and quarantine all that crap. Theaters were so cautious. And if
- 42:38you somebody had COVID that had shut down production, they can film and that's
- 42:44cost of money. And he's he's a producer on that, right, right,
- 42:47So that's costing Tom money. So Tom's so as far as the part
- 42:52one and part two, I think when they marketed it, uh for Blu
- 42:57ray release, and I think here they didn't. They omitted the part one
- 43:00part Yeah, they recently retitled it to get rid of that. So and
- 43:04the next one, I'm like, because it's a cliffhanger. Yeah, and
- 43:07I'm like, oh, when the next one's got to be coming out here?
- 43:09Right, No, coming out to twenty twenty five. Yeah, and
- 43:14he's gonna be reworking it a lot. Yeah. Yeah, they're definitely reworking
- 43:17it. But it was a good movie as opposed to some of the previous
- 43:22ones. The plot was fairly easy to follow. Yeah, it wasn't too
- 43:27convoluted. Yeah, you kind of knew what're straightforward? Yeah, it was
- 43:31I like to Hunt for Red October at the beginning, you know the ship.
- 43:35Yeah, that was good, pretty cool. This is a really cool
- 43:39thing. So they did a transition of uh, I think like they didn't
- 43:44Hunt for Red October where they're speaking in Russian and then it's subtitled and they
- 43:50sort of move over towards English, and it reminded me of that scene from
- 43:53Star Trek The Undiscovered Country where they're speak during the courtroom scene where they're speaking
- 43:58and cling out and the sort they sort of transition into English, Yes,
- 44:02but it's implied that they're still speaking kleanon. I like that. That's good.
- 44:07Yeah, that's my favorite Star Trek movie of all time. Is I
- 44:09Just Got Country? Yeah, that one's the perfect goodbye for that career.
- 44:15I agree one hundred percent. It's one of my favorite movies. And Next
- 44:20Next In didn't get that until this year, but it was It was great
- 44:25to see they got a perfect goodbye because we had Nemesis in the theater,
- 44:29and Nemesis was my favorite. Is my favorite is Star Trek Voyage of the
- 44:35Dawn Tredder? Yeah, you bring it in War Trobe. It's right,
- 44:42we're doing crossovers. That's right. That talking rat gets on board, man,
- 44:46it's great. I would love to see some of the crossovers. It's
- 44:50in Daniel's head. Oh yeah, it'd be great. The guys they have
- 44:53like a big foot and they hop or whatever. Oh yeah, yeah,
- 44:58you know I'm talking about. Yeah, it's kind of it goes kind of
- 45:00crazy when you read those books. Mm hmm, yeah those are That's a
- 45:07good but it does sound like if it's right star drag boage of the Don
- 45:09Rudder. I mean, I like it. I like it. Speaking of
- 45:13that, it was the Barbie director. Oh yeah, credit, Yeah,
- 45:20she's directing that for Netflix, the the line of the Wits and the Wardrobe.
- 45:27She's making Netflix. And she got robbed this week in the Oscar Dong.
- 45:32Oh absolutely yeah. And Margot Robbie got robbed too. So yeah,
- 45:37the star and the director I think got snubbed. So yeah, because that
- 45:45was the biggest movie last last year was Barbie. So which is funny because
- 45:52nobody banked on that. Nobody guessed that Barbie would be no no no.
- 45:57I watched it. Uh. I gave it a C plus. Okay,
- 46:02I liked it in some parts, but there's some prettiness, you know,
- 46:07I mean there there was obviously a message. It was trying to deliver that.
- 46:09I I kind of I got it. I was, I was okay
- 46:13with it. I did think it was funny. The memes that, like
- 46:15the fact that Margaret Robbie didn't get nominated but but Ken did was the point
- 46:20of the Yes, the patriarchy not wrong, you know, not at all.
- 46:28But you watched it, maybe it's like he's gonna get nominated, like
- 46:30he's too good at it. He's yeah, he stole the show. And
- 46:34then maybe like, yeah, he was on screen. He wanted to see
- 46:37what Ken's doing, you know. Yeah, yeah, dojo mojo house or
- 46:42whatever he lived in. They make they make like welcome mats and say,
- 46:46welcome to my dojo mojos house. I'm thought about getting one. Just yeah,
- 46:52yes, but very well, thanks chess. Was anything else you want
- 46:59to up? That's all for right now. I mean, I'm just hoping
- 47:04that they can get a movie together, get a cast together, get a
- 47:07director, make it. Hopefully it'd be great to be able to go to
- 47:15the theater again and watch a Star Trek movie. That'd be fantastic. Yeah,
- 47:20don't do pretty cool guys, go forward. Yeah, I from your
- 47:27mouth to God's here is That's what I've been saying all along too. We
- 47:30don't want to know what happened, We want to know what happens next to
- 47:34paraphrase, what does God need with the prequel? Exactly? Yeah, exactly.
- 47:37Yes, it's like we're done with those, Let's go forward. What
- 47:44happened after Picard. We don't need Michael Burnham timeline and discussion. If they
- 47:49made Sturgery Legacy the movies great, yeah, yeah, sure, a different
- 47:57career or something, you know. Yeah, and if they make the story
- 48:00good, you don't have to have all the background, you know whatever.
- 48:02I mean. J. J. Abrams proved that in two thousand and nine
- 48:06and started beyond. You can just go and enjoy a good movie. You
- 48:09know, if you go and see a movie with seven of nine and all
- 48:13those characters, you don't have to you don't have to know their background if
- 48:17you make the story good, right right? So do that? Yeah?
- 48:22Yeah, because you watch Star Trek nine, you watched you see the cast
- 48:28and characters, like, really, I didn't complain about any character on there.
- 48:32Bones played Bones great, but yeah, you know, Pine did great
- 48:37with Kirk and oh yeah, and what they did, I think what they
- 48:40did a good job is the characters that should have been emulated were emulated well.
- 48:46And the characters that should not have been emulated or copied they also did
- 48:52a good job. Like you know, Spock and McCoy did a fairly good
- 48:54job of sort of replicating that charm that their characters had, and Chris Pine
- 49:00was credit did a good job of not doing that with Kirk. He was
- 49:05very adamant that he was going to play Kirk, not an imitation of William
- 49:09Shanner. Right, yes, so, and he ate the apple perfectly,
- 49:15you know, yes, absolutely, But you won't have that problem if you
- 49:21don't make any more prequels that's truely new and original and fresh and in the
- 49:25timeline every single star Trek fan wise, which is in the next gen as
- 49:30long as yes. Problem is is you have a guy connected to jar Jar
- 49:37right now running the ship. So with Kurtsman, because he's the one that
- 49:46wrote the movie, Alex Kurtzman jar Jar, No Robert Lucas it was Robert
- 49:54Orse was a Kurtsman. You're thinking jj jearjear. Oh, you're talking about
- 50:01George J. J Abrams No. I was joking about there. Some people
- 50:08call him George. I have heard that that's funny because there's back now.
- 50:20Yeah, we've run it back. We've run him back. I see I
- 50:24did not know that. Okay, bear trapped my way right into that,
- 50:30all right, But I'm just sitting here going, oh yeah yeah green like
- 50:32an idiot. Sure, yeah yeah. Jar Jar was in Star Trek.
- 50:37Yeah, yeah, yeah, he's a sister word. Yeah, because they
- 50:45call him. I've heard people call him George Abrams because they're so mad at
- 50:49I've heard that. Yeah, now that you say that, yes, I
- 50:51haven't heard that. Yeah, because you know, he was the Spielberg prodigy
- 50:54pretty much. And then after after he left Star Trek start fans are kind
- 51:00of angry, but he made up for it for making a good Star Wars
- 51:02movie with Forces Weakens. Then he makes uh Rise of Skywalker and everybody's like
- 51:12yeah yeah, and he's been in director of jail since then because he has
- 51:15nothing really in production. So well, he's had stuff, he just hasn't
- 51:22gotten over the finish line with it. Like he's had to work on h
- 51:24on some stuff for Warner Brothers, but it just hasn't finished. So yeah,
- 51:29it was weird. I think they paid him, like he wondered fifty
- 51:31million dollars coming up with like some new series. Yeah, he proposed some
- 51:37sci fi show that was like three hundred million dollars and you know we're not
- 51:39doing that. Yeah, oh really okay yeah yeah, and they like they
- 51:45had already spent like close to like fifty million on it, I think,
- 51:46yeah, so yeah, they and then they scrapped it. Yeah, so

- 51:55not that that's yeah, yeah, they are seeing in right now. It's
- 52:00like you guys do to rein it in and yeah, these productions smaller,

- 52:32different stories and it's shows you that you can have a smaller budget make a
- 52:37great movie if you have a great script. The movie the creator was like
- 52:42that too, like it a million and fantastic visual effects, amazing and deservingly
- 52:49so they should get the novel because you look at the special effects of the
- 52:52creator. That movie look like, I don't know, almost like Blade Runner
